THE Australian Body Art Festival launched their 2018 theme of Wild Things on Saturday with body painting artists, Diana Ormston and Carleen Adorn creating two living artworks in the theme. “Today is a little taste of the spectacular artwork that you can see from dozens of artists in April at the festival,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. The 2018 event will take place in Cooroy on the weekend of 7 & 8 April, attracting artists and thousands of spectators from across Australia and overseas. The event is centred on competitions in temporary body painting in categories of brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting. The event also showcases competitions and exhibitions in photography and wearable art which is fashion made from recycled materials. The event is a free festival that is a visual feast for the senses. Inspiring artworks, street performers, costumes, entertainment, market stalls and lots of fun all weekend make this a must visit event! It’s been a good week for the home-grown festival, with Acting Tourism Industry Development Minister Shannon Fentiman announcing that the Australian Body Art Festival would be supported this year with $10,000 in marketing assistance under round eight of Tourism and Events Queensland’s Queensland Destination Events Program. “This marketing support is invaluable for us in the second year of hosting the event in Cooroy. It will really help to get the word out

there about this fantastic and unique festival. It will provide a bigger benefit to our sponsors this year too, who will be included in our marketing activities. “We couldn’t run this event without the support of our sponsors and we still have sponsorship opportunities available from as low as $250 so it’s a great opportunity to support a fantastic local event,” said Danielle Taylor. The Australian Body Art Festival is a free community event run by the volunteers at Cooroy Chamber of Commerce with generous support from funding partners Tourism & Events Queensland, Firefly Solutions, Wythes Real Estate, Tourism Noosa, Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, SPV Accounting, The Shed @ Cooroy,

SPV Accounting is the people’s choice SPV Accounting has taken out first prize in the QMP Shop Window Trail with their Harry Potter inspired Christmas window. Over 20 businesses decorated their windows to compete for the coveted Best Window award which has become a Christmas in Cooroy tradition organised by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc. Families love wandering around admiring the windows and spotting the costumed possums. “Cooroy means possum which is why there is a possum in each window and they are all dressed up in costumes to make them individual and to add a bit of fun to the window trail. Everyone put a lot of effort into their windows this year and it is a really lovely way of enhancing the Christmas spirit in Cooroy,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor. SPV Accounting had the Harry Potter Possum this year and themed their entire window decorations around their mascot including a sorting hat to top the tree, owl, quidditch broom, chocolate frog and the Hogwarts Express zooming around the Christmas tree. Taking out second prize was Let’s Talk Hair with their winter wonderland window with a snow-clad tree and garland complete with twinkling lights which was a classically beautiful look. Cooroy Shoes & Accessories and Blue Brown Bag who have been previous winners of the competition where just a few votes behind the place getters getting a special mention for their impressive windows! The winner of the lucky draw for voting on their favourite window was Haydn Slater winning a $100 Cooroy Supa IGA voucher.

Mr G celebrates 25 years of teaching

Phil Giblett, with some of the Year 4 students he’ll be teaching this year

YOU’D think that after 25 years in the same job, some of the shine would have worn off but Phil Giblett’s enthusiasm for the first day back at school is palpable. It’s this genuine enthusiasm, along with his sense of fun, that makes him one of the students’ most

loved teachers at Cooroy Primary School. You’d never guess, with his obvious passion for instilling a love of learning in children, that teaching wasn’t Phil’s first career choice. After completing a dual degree Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Environ-

mental Science he found there were no jobs available in his chosen field. Fortunately the dual degree allowed him to teach but he had to go to Africa as part of the Australian Volunteers Abroad programme to get a job. It was whilst teaching

four children of their own - George (16), Tilly (15), Grace (13) and Gemma (11). It is a testament to his teaching ability and the rapport he builds with his students that everyone who’s ever been in ‘Mr G’s’ class considers themselves lucky.

Sandy’s courage is a driving force SANDY Klein is a local already known to many of us. A passionate supporter of the Cooroy community and its causes for many years, Sandy has been in a big battle of her own this past year. Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Sandy has already faced a number of challenges head on, but not being able to ride up front and side-by-side with carer, Ken has been a source of frustration. So, Ken and Sandy sourced a vehicle that would allow Sandy to sit up front and give Ken the chance to help Sandy in and out of a vehicle more easily. The team at the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank worked with Sandy and Ken to make the purchase possible. Last week, they called by to show off the sweet new ride - a new Toyota Alphard van. “The hospital staff were a bit surprised that up until now I’ve been lifting her in and out myself,” Ken laughed. “Now things are a whole lot easier with the wheelchair in the back and it’s great to have Sandy beside me as we drive along. She’s amazing,” Ken said. The smile on Sandy’s face in the photo above says it all, so be sure to give Sandy and Ken a wave next time you see them driving past.

Mayor Tony Wellington with some of the solar panels on the roof of Council’s Tewantin administration building. Last night Council approved the installation of major solar power systems for four other Council buildings. The new systems will shave around 277 tonnes of CO2 from Council’s carbon footprint each year and save Council an estimated $38,000 a year in electricity costs.

NOOSA Council will install major solar power systems on four of its buildings to help achieve its 2026 carbon-neutral goal. Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Aquatic Centre, The J and the Noosaville depot will be equipped with new

solar-power systems between now and April. Combined, the panels will produce more than 356,000 kWh of electricity annually, saving Council an estimated $38,000 a year in electricity costs.

The systems will shave around 277 tonnes of CO2 from Council’s carbon footprint each year, paying for themselves in the form of energy cost savings within seven years. “The solar power systems are also

compatible with new battery technology. However, at this stage, almost all of the electricity that the panels generate will be consumed on site,” says Mayor Tony Wellington. The solar roll-out is among a raft of emission-busting activities Council has approved as part of a detailed action plan to support its goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2026. “The action plan outlines a range of measures to reduce our carbon footprint including behavioural change initiatives, as well as process and technical changes,” the Mayor said. “Installing the solar systems is one of the pledges Council made as a foundation member of the Cities Power Partnership.” Council’s Tewantin administration building is already equipped with solar panels, and

the new digital hub at Peregian Beach will soon have 112 solar panels, plus a battery to store energy. Mayor Wellington said the work Council had done over the past year to calculate a baseline carbon footprint was now paying off. “We had to wait for the data from all of Council’s facilities and operations to be collated and analysed before we could begin introducing carbon reduction initiatives. But we are better off for having done that work as we now have an essential baseline to measure our progress. “We can now head toward our 2026 zeronet-emissions goal knowing exactly what we are achieving in the way of reductions,” he said. “Ultimately, this will be an environmental win as well as an economic win.”

news Introducing our new State Member

COOROY RAG

BY way of introduction I’m Marty Hunt your new State Member for Nicklin. It’s a very humbling experience to put yourself forward for election by the community to represent them in State Parliament and have them elect you. I want to thank the people of the Nicklin Electorate for placing their trust and confidence in me and regardless of where your vote went on election day, I undertake to ensure that I represent the interests of everyone in our community. I said many times during the election “I will be the Nicklin man in Brisbane not the Brisbane man in Nicklin” and I intend to fight for what our community needs. 30 years of policing and the last 17 years as Sergeant in Charge of the Nambour Police Citizens Youth Club has provided me with a unique insight into the needs of our area and the issues we face. I intend to ensure that I spend the majority of my time out in the electorate listening to locals and ensuring I’m across the issues that affect you. We’ve set up the office at 51 Currie Street, Nambour with a new team and we are open for business. Phone 5406 4100.

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BRICKBATS to the arsonist who attempted to set fire to the Masonic Lodge in Cooroy on Tuesday, January 16 at 4pm. Luckily neighbours were home and managed to quell the flames before any substantial damage occurred. They tried to hold onto the peretrator but he managed to slip away while they were busy trying to save the building. Another person managed to get the felon’s vehicle licence number and the felon is believed to be known to police. Thanks to all the local people who got involved.

BOUQUET to the staff and volunteers at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre for their wonderful new exhibitions currently showing. The opening on January 20 was attended by more than 150 arts enthusiasts. Accomplished artists showed their expertise in ceramics, painting and woodwork. A great start to 2018. BOUQUET to Tony the Courtesy Bus Driver from the RSL for stopping the bus at the corner of Maple and Emerald Street outside the Jewellers and holding up all the traffic to help me back on my feet after I had tripped up the gutter and fell back onto the road. Also to the lady (sorry I didn’t catch your name) who helped me to the seats on the footpath, made sure I was ok, made me rest for half an hour then helped me back across the road to my car. A big thank you to both these kind people. I am getting on in years and have trouble with my legs and stumbled after I had crossed the road and stepped onto the gutter. I am very fortunate Tony didn’t run over me and so grateful that he stopped and helped and he was not bothered that he was holding up traffic to do so ~ George Kootoofa Brickbats and Bouquets are supplied by the members of the community and not necessarily the views of the editor or staff of the Cooroy Rag

Council defers decision regarding RV Stopover COUNCIL have voted to defer consideration of the expression of interest regarding the management of the Cooroy RV Stopover to enable further consideration of the costs to subsidise this facility and whether they can be reduced or nullified. Council established the Cooroy RV Stopover in 2015 to address an identified need to cater for RV travellers in the Noosa hinterland. Council invested significant funds and resources to establish and operate the

stopover facility but patronage has been modest at best. A report to Council in August 2017 indicated the current thirdparty management agreement to operate the facility represents a poor financial outcome. A new Expression of Interest process was undertaken late last year to seek new management proposals for the facility, with 5 submissions received from a range of business and community entities.

news Do you have a Great Australian Dream? Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank AUSTRALIA Day is one of the great days of the year. It has come and gone for 2018, but our national day always reminds me of the great Australian dream - to own your own home. In recent years it’s been referred to as a mirage, but helping people on the road to that dream is one of the most enjoyable parts of a bank manager’s job. Like the pursuit of any big dream, there’s some work involved and some processes to follow in setting up your home loan. You will need to have saved a certain amount of your own funds as a deposit - which is usually a minimum of 5% of the purchase price. There are also other costs to allow for, such as the loan set up costs, stamp duty for the purchase as well as your own solicitors charges and search fees. Having the deposit is the first big step in the process. You also need to fit the criteria of the lender’s policy for such things as job stability and capacity to repay the loan. These things will all be taken in to account during the assessment period. The assessment process may vary from bank to bank and depend upon what type of loan you’re applying for. For example at Bendigo Bank your local manager will have their own lending authority to approve most credit cards, personal and residential loans.

It’s always a good idea to get to know the staff at your local and the manager in particular. With all the electronic means of banking in this day and age, ATM’s, internet, phone banking, direct credit and debits, not all customers regularly visit their branch and getting to know each other can be difficult. A bank will need to use letters, emails or phone calls to stay in touch with customers they usually don’t see. Nothing is more reassuring during any application process than feeling confident in the representative guiding you through it. So, if you have that Great Australian Dream, please call in or contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona) or geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the senior manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank.

What do Aussies do with their super? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

FIND out where and what retirees are investing in and spending their superannuation money on. A significant number of Aussies are now entering retirement with substantial superannuation balances, after compulsory super contributions for most employees were introduced a quarter of a century ago. But what are retirees doing with their super money? Are they putting it toward big-ticket items, paying off debts or investing it into retirement products that provide them with a regular income when they finish working? We look at the figures from The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Statistical Report, released this year, which follows the lives of more than 17,000 Australians. Who has super and how much? • Over a four-year period (2011 to 2015), 69.2% of men and 71.4% of women said they had super at the point of their retirement. • The average super balance upon retirement was $454,221 for men and $230,907 for women. What do people do with their super money? • 52.1% of men and 67.7% of women converted at least some of their super money into a product that provided them with a regular income in retirement (such as an account-based pension or annuity), with an account-based pension the most commonly used. • Those that converted super into an income-stream product tended to have larger super balances than other retirees

(the average balance $677,442 for men and $353,485 for women). • Meanwhile, 47.9% of men and 32.3% of women didn’t convert any super into an income-stream product and these retirees generally had relatively lower super balances. • Typically, retirees who didn’t convert any (or all of their) super into an incomestream product simply left super savings in their account, invested money elsewhere, paid off existing debts, chose to assist family members, and put money toward large expenditure items, such as renovations, holidays, and motor vehicles. What you should know about your options If you’re in or nearing retirement and wondering what you might do with your super money when you do access it, remember there will be a number of things to weigh up and look into. Taking super as a lump sum A lump sum could help you to pay off your home loan or other outstanding debts, but there may be tax implications to consider and you should think about what you’ll live on if you have no super left. The government’s Age Pension could be one option, although if you’re pinning your hopes entirely on government support, you should consider the sort of lifestyle it might fund. June 2017 figures show a 65-year-old retiring today needs an annual income of $43,695 to fund a ‘comfortable’ lifestyle in retirement, assuming they are relatively healthy and own their home outright. By comparison, the maximum Age Pen-

sion rate for a single person is around $23,254 annually. Moving it into an account-based pension If you’re thinking that you’d like to receive a regular income in retirement, an account-based pension (or allocated pension) could be a tax-effective option. While the most you’ll be able to transfer into these pension accounts is $1.6 million, you won’t be limited in what you can take out, but each year, you will need to withdraw at least a minimum amount. For more information, check out our article – Making sense of account-based pensions. Purchasing an annuity with your super An annuity provides a series of regular payments over a set number of years, or for the remainder of your life, depending on whether you opt for a fixed-term or lifetime annuity. You will however be sacrificing some flexibility as you cannot easily make lump sum withdrawals and life expectancy is also a major consideration. To determine what will work best for you please contact us on 07 5447 7740 to discuss further. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004, trading as Provision Wealth Management, are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. news What happens when there isn’t enough money in your estate? WHEN you make your will, you can’t know exactly how much money you will have to distribute when you die. You might have a lot more than you do now, or you might have less. So, what happens if you make a will now leaving “$400,000 to my daughter Donna” and “$200,000 to my brother Ian” but only have $300,000 when you die? Does Donna get the lot? Unfortunately for Donna, but luckily for Ian, the answer is no. First, your executor must pay your funeral and testamentary expenses out of the money you have left in your estate. Then, your executor must pay all secured and then unsecured creditors like your credit card bills and all outstanding debts before any legacy is paid to Donna or Ian. If your funeral expenses and your debts require $30,000 to be paid from your estate, your executor would have $270,000 left. Since your intention was that Donna would receive twice as much as Ian, Donna would then be paid $180,000 and Ian would receive $90,000. It is not unusual for complicated situations to arise when a will is being administered. If you need help to make your will clear and uncomplicated, or assistance in administering an estate, call us at Cooroy Legal Centre on 544 77 637 or email Jessica Popple at jessica@cooroylegalcentre.com.au. We will be happy to help you.

Cooroy Fusion Festival is all about Community

Fiona Winter & Ally Brown with the Cooroy Fusion Volunteer Shirt from 2017 IT is no surprise that the Cooroy Fusion Festival, which started as a celebration for the opening of the Cooroy Library in 2010, has developed into a much larger event that is all about the fantastic Noosa hinterland. “We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful place and the Festival is a fusion of all of the things that make the Cooroy community so special. “It really does showcase the entire community including groups that have stalls at the festival, local businesses who sponsor the event, great local entertainment, market and food stalls, dozens of volunteers who assist in running the event and of course the thousands of people who come to experience everything the festival has to offer,”

said festival organiser, Chris Bell. You can spend hours just reading the Cooroy Fusion Festival program as there is just so much happening throughout the day, that you will want to plan your day so that you don’t miss out! This year the festival is held on Saturday 12 May in the Mill Precinct and includes entertainment and market stalls on the green space, activities at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy Library, Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group and Cooroora Woodworkers Club, plus the Noosa District Orchid Society Annual Show at the CWA Hall. “One of the first things we did when we moved to Cooroy was visit the Cooroy Fusion Festival and I was so glad we did as it not only showed how much Cooroy had to offer but it also gave me an immediate sense of belonging and demonstrated the fantastic community spirit in Cooroy. “It has a very social vibe and it is great to see the involvement of so many community groups, businesses and of course, the invaluable efforts of the volunteers which is why Fiona Winter Realty has decided to sponsor the volunteers this year,” said community group organiser, Ally Brown from Fiona Winter Realty. Some of the other sponsorships already confirmed are the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent, the Noosa Council Cooroy Library activities, the Cooroy Supa IGA Tastes of the Hinterland and Fiona Winter Realty’s volunteer support. Other confirmed sponsors include Cooroy Rag, Cooroy Service Centre, Gelignite Jacks, Mower & ATV Solutions, Sunny Coast Accountants and Suttons Cleaning Service. If you want more information on the festival including information on sponsorship and volunteering head to www.cooroyfusionfestival.com.au

dining & entertainment Bench Press ready to rock

IF you love your music loud and fast, then put Saturday 17 February in your diary when Melbourne’s post-punk outfit Bench Press hit The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel, supported by Goon On The Rocks + The Royal Artillery. BENCH PRESS has not been together as long as the easy confidence they project. Only since March 2016 has Bench Press been doing the live thing, back when they commanded only twenty minutes of material to bash out. Since then, guitarist Morgan Griffiths, bassist Lewis Waite and drummer Jordan Hicks have achieved perfect easygoing unity, resulting in their dynamic, to-the-point post-punk, propelled by Jack Stavrakis’s vocals venting on the frustrations of modern life. Snarling, angular and loud, Bench Press invoke the old while pushing something that feels very new. GOON ON THE ROCKS is a four piece indie ska/punk band from deep within Brisbane’s seedy underbelly. High energy and full of grunt with an old-school punk vibe. THE ROYAL ARTILLERY bring a big sound to the table with deeply authentic blues guitar bolstered by heavy grooves reminiscent of 90’s riff rock. With an exciting sound and

stimulating live show, The Royal Artillery have cemented themselves as a headline act in Brisbane’s rock scene and are forging a path nationally with national radio play and a start on the festival circuit. Quite simply, if you dig Hendrix-laced music, this band needs your attention. TICKETS: Pre-sale $10 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $15 at the door - Doors open 7.30pm The Imperial Hotel’s FREE courtesy bus operates Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm + Sundays from 2pm travelling to Eumundi, Belli Park, Cooroy, Doonan, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, and Verrierdale. Phone Gary on 0467 414 171 to book. The courtesy bus service is also available for GROUP BOOKINGS of eight or more up to 30 mins from the hotel (includes Bli Bli, Coolum, Cooran, Nambour, Noosa, Noosaville, Palmwoods, Peregian Springs, Peregian Beach, Pomona, Sunshine Beach, Tewantin and Yandina). ‘SHAPES and Scapes’ is the ceramic work of Black Mountain’s Carol Watkins and the painted angles and geometry of artist Helen Saint-Smith. The pair met on a cruise through the Kimberley two years ago, and were reintroduced to each other via former BFAC co-ordinator, Cathy Money. “I wanted to exhibit with a painter and Cathy suggested our work would go well together,” Ms Watkins said. Current BFAC co-ordinator Alicia Sharples said the show is exciting and balanced. “Where Helen works with sharp lines and block colour in her geometric landscapes, Carol’s penchant for experimentation is a beautiful, conceptual contrast. It’s almost the ‘orderly’ in with the ‘chaotic’, but united by this vibrant, love of colour’,” Ms Sharples said. “I think this collaboration could inspire some fresh ideas about who artists choose to work with, in their own practices. We’re excited to show this exhibition.” ‘Shapes and Scapes’ opened on Saturday January 20 at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, in Cooroy. With ‘Burls of Australia’ by John Willis and ‘Eye view – Captured Images’ by Ruth Horton. All three exhibitions run until Tuesday, February 20. Carol Watkins and Helen Saint-Smith’s artist talk and floor walk is 10.30am Saturday, March 3.

It’s Wednesday ... hump day, but with a few more days left before the end of the week, your head is pounding ... you ask yourself “How am I going to make it through today, let alone the rest of the week?! Why am I getting these headaches so often and how do I find out what to do to treat them best?!!” Well the first step is figuring out what type of headache is causing your pain. If you know your headache type, you can treat it correctly.....is it a migraine, a cluster headache or tension....or perhaps it may be sinus?? What lifestyle factors may help me to manage this condition? The best way to manage headaches is to avoid them. And to avoid them, you need to know what things (or triggers) bring them on. By finding and avoiding your triggers, you can limit how often you get headaches and how bad they are. Here are some of the most common headache triggers: Stress (either during a stressful time or right after stress subsides); Menstrual cycle in women; Changes in your routine, such as how much you exercise or how much you sleep; Fasting or skipping meals; Changes in the weather, heat, or high humidity; Bright lights, glare, or reflected sunlight; Foods, such as chocolate; Alcohol; >Strong odours from perfume, paint, dust, and certain flowers; Some prescribed medicines (your pharmacist can advise on this). Try to avoid as many triggers as you can. Triggers add up, so the fewer you have at one time, the better your chance of preventing a headache. To manage your headaches: • Use a headache diary to find your triggers. • Make sure you sleep, exercise, and eat on a regular schedule. • Don’t eat foods that are likely to trigger your

Energise yourself MOST people have experienced low energy or fatigue at some point in their lives. After juggling home, work and family life, it’s no wonder there is little energy left for yourself! Anyone can feel tired at the end of the day, but ongoing fatigue can sneak up on you and become your ‘new normal’ – even though it’s not normal to be tired all the time. Persistent fatigue can often be misunderstood, as diagnostic procedures (such as blood tests) may not show any imbalance within your body. If you have persistent fatigue, don’t accept this as normal. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. When you’re feeling fatigued, it is important to consider whether you have the nutrients required for optimal energy. If you’re not providing your body with the nutrients it needs, it can be hard to jump out of bed feeling refreshed. The energy powerhouses within your body are known as mitochondria~ and are present in almost all of your cells. During a busy day, your mitochondria produce all of the energy you need, however, producing energy relies on a steady stream of nutrients. If your mitochondria do not receive adequate nutrition, they cannot perform at their best! Nutrients That Energise: When your body needs energy, it calls on the following nutrients to keep you energised: Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10): is a vital nutrient used by your mitochondria in the process of energy production. It also protects against daily damage. Magnesium: helps your body transform the food you eat into energy. Once created, units of energy must also bind to magnesium before they can be used by the body B group vitamins: enter the mitochondria,

where they are used to synthesise energy, and assist the mitochondria~ and Acetyl-L-carnitine: brings fats into your mitochondria to burn for energy. Energising yourself also means creating a diet and lifestyle that supports your energy stores: • Eat foods rich in unrefined and unprocessed carbohydrates, protein and fat~ the primary ingredients for energy production; • Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, which can drain your energy and deplete vitalising nutrients including your B vitamins; • Sleep for seven to nine hours each night; • Destress by spending time in nature, meditating and having fun! Being busy and feeling stressed places increased pressure on your mitochondria; • Exercise four to five times per week. Exercise stimulates your body to make new mitochondria, resulting in more energy! When feeling very fatigued, go for a regular walk, swim or yoga class which will be beneficial for your energy levels than staying sedentary. Time to Rediscover Your Spark: If you could do with more energy in your life consider how you can build the above steps into your daily routine. If you need specialised advice with your health issues, a qualified health practitioner can get you back on track with a tailored treatment plan. Remember, providing a strong foundation for energy production will set you on the path to a refreshed and reenergised you. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. For more information call 0419 668 803, or visit www.nutritionmeans.com.au

pomona Pam Taylor’s Colourful Adventures - an Exhibition

COOROY RAG

EVOCATIVE memories and explosions of colour from recent adventures through Morocco, France and Italy will take eye-catching centre stage at Pam Taylor’s latest exhibition. From commercial art, decorative painting, tutoring acrylic painting techniques, mastering various mediums, exploring various painting techniques and styles to printmaking lino cuts onto canvas, it’s colour, form and bold shapes, which remain prominent in Pam’s trademark. Most recently it’s a move towards urban landscapes and figures which has defined her artwork. The detail capturing buildings, signs, windows and doors amongst the colour and chaos of Morocco, to the exuberantly coloured houses of France and Italy, especially Burano, is captivating. And every picture tells a story. Pam’s colourful adventures exhibition, called Journeys Passed will be opened by celebrated artist and tutor Don Milner, on 10 February 2018 at 12 Noon at the Old Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Everyone is invited. Drinks and nibbles will be served. The exhibition will run until March 14.

Cooran Earth Rights THIS amazing area- the Sunshine Coast hinterland- is still relatively unspoiled by ‘progress’, and many of us realise just how fortunate we are to live here. That the nature of the place draws people of a certain type, or that the passers-by who come to stay choose not to leave, either way its inhabitants are certainly blessed. Dotted through this landscape are the communities where ordinary folk ‘make’ the many small towns the special places they are. In one little town, called Cooran, one group of locals were shocked to discover an impending threat to their district- that of mining; digging, prospecting boring, drilling: certainly not in keeping with the area. Determined to stand against this intrusion they banded together, and now work hard to protect and to preserve this beautiful locality. This small but powerful group - called Cooran Earth Rights, have taken on the responsibility of raising the awareness of neighbouring communities as well as their own, so others can be informed and thus empowered if faced with the same unwelcome visitors. Your frogs need you! Find a Frog in February

Shaun Fisher with endangered Giant barred frog THE Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) is once again embarking on their Citizen Science program - ‘Find a Frog in February.’ This is a science project where the community helps to learn more about what is happening to frogs in the Mary River catchment area and how frogs are responding to changes in the environment. Due to the large size of the Mary River catchment this project involves people from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Noosa, Gympie and Fraser Coast council regions. This includes coastal river catchments from Peregian to Burrum Heads and Fraser Island (K’Gari). “We are looking for individuals, families and groups to get involved in finding frogs during the month of February. The more we know about where frogs are, the more we can manage their habitats and environment” said Eva Ford, Catchment Officer from the MRCCC. The program encourages people to get outside, find frogs and contribute their records so we can all ensure frogs have a better future” said Eva. The Mary River catchment is home to around 40 frog species, including the endangered Giant barred frog, one of the largest frogs in Australia, and the Cascade tree frog, a rainforest stream specialist. “Frogs are a vital component of ecosystems and are easily affected by

changes in the air, water and land. Collecting data on their whereabouts and the habitats they utilise, and engaging the wider community to get out there and really look at their environment are two of the main aims of Find a Frog in February” said Eva Ford. “Initially we are aiming for 1000 sightings” stated Eva “If it’s a good season for frog activity we can easily find more!” The MRCCC will identify frogs that people encounter from photographs, recordings of calls or good descriptions recorded on provided data sheets. We need the information on the data sheets to be reliable so it can be used with great certainty. Just recently the Australian Museum launched their new Frog ID App which is an excellent tool to help with frog identification with photos, calls and habitat needs. A helpful Frog Finders Guide and the Data Sheet can be downloaded from the MRCCC website. The information gathered from the community and sent in to the MRCCC during February will be verified and stored in the State Government’s WildNet database where it is accessed by researchers, planners and members of the public. Full details available at www.mrccc.org.au/find-a-frog-infebruary-citizen-science/ or email the MRCCC at findafrog@mrccc.org.au or phone MRCCC on 07 5482 4766

Presentation Day was on December 16. Around 109 players (a record) turned out. The course was in terrific condition and thanks should go to the Ground Staff & Volunteers. Light refreshments were put on by Wayne and his Staff, which was enjoyed by all. As the presentations were happening, many were wondering who the player was going to be. The result that could be a first was a dead heat between Kaleb Hamilton (left) and Peter Oconnor (right). The trophies were handed out by Brent Jesberg.

It’s the perfect weather to sail away

Members of the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club had a lot of sailing fun over the Christmas period with silly dress up events and grown ups racing around in kid’s boats

NOOSA Yacht & Rowing Club is a place where you can meet new friends and enjoy the camaraderie and friendly atmosphere of fun & competitive

sailing. Sailing on the Noosa River is an ideal location for fun sailing events and the opportunity to learn the skills required for river sailing. Anyone

not wishing to sail can participate by volunteering their time to assist in the administration of the races. Trailer sailor races are held each Wednes-

day and Saturday, with the casual WAGS races sailed each Wednesday afternoon with a start time of 1530 during the warmer months and

1500 in winter. The club championship series is sailed every second Saturday with two races on the day starting from 1300. The fleet consists of trailerable boats ranging in size from 15 to 26ft overall and based on a handicap system to give each competitor the opportunity to secure a placing. With river sailing, variables in wind strength and direction plus tidal movement creates a challenge to all competitors where the captain’s ages range from 15 to 84 years old. Usually there are boats requiring extra crew, so visitors with basic sailing experience can call or visit the club to add their names to a crew available list or simply turn up on the day and take pot luck on getting a ride. Over the past year we have had both national & international visitors enjoying time on the water. We even had a visit from Santa!
