Six seconds is all that separates their personal best times and both men have competed many times between them in New Zealand’s equally iconic sister race, Kawerau King of the Mountain. Once again the calibre of this year’s competitors means there are no favourites to win the hotly contested race. But before you hedge your bets on Ben or Mark you should consider Daniel Jones. Returning to Pomona for the first time since he set the yet-unbroken record as a junior in 2008, Daniel, a New Zealand representative finished third at Kawerau in 2016, one spot behind Ben Duffus, and one spot in front of Mark Bourne. Another athlete looking to take part in this year’s Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge has already set a record for being the oldest competitor in the history of the race. Seventy-seven year old Frank Falappi from West Woombye has competed in many long distance events ranging from 45-100 klms since 2014,

and is proof that age is no barrier to taking on new challenges if you are fit and well prepared. Reigning Queen of the Mountain, and local Pomona school teacher Leslie Saunders will seek her third consecutive title and compete against dual winner Maree Stephenson from Brisbane who is back to compete for the first time since her successive wins in 2009 and 2010. Both women will also face stiff competition from New Zealand representative Robyn Muir who will race up Mt Cooroora for the first time and is the reigning Open Women’s champion of the Kawerau Mountain event. Bringing together a host of attractions and event experiences, competitors and spectators alike can look forward to another all-day, funfilled event which includes other familyfriendly races, heritage markets, antiques fair, animal farm, amusement rides, local cuisine and live music all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona. THE 2016 Census figures have just been released, with the population of Cooroy’s 4563 postcode now at 8,478. This area covers the broader Cooroy area spreading from Tinbeerwah and Lake Macdonald out to Ridgewood, Carters Ridge and Black Mountain and represents 16% of Noosa Shire’s population. “Cooroy continues to be a flourishing town with a big heart. Our growth since the last Census in 2011 is 7% which is significantly less than the 11% growth that the entire Noosa Shire experienced. Our town has only increased by about 500 people in those six years which is quite sustainable growth. We do need to continue to be engaged as a community to ensure that future develop-

ments are in keeping with our existing culture, heritage and community spirit as we have something special to preserve here,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “What is perhaps one of the most interesting statistics is that 21.8% of Cooroy people volunteered for an organisation or group in the last 12 months which is higher than the state average of 18.8% and Australia’s average of 19%. Without a doubt the volunteers in our community are one of the major contributors to what makes our town special. Last year, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce alone had over 200 volunteers contribute more than 1000 hours to activities which were all aimed at delivering social, com-

Danielle Taylor, President of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce munity and economic outcomes for the town. When you consider all the other

community groups that have volunteers contributing to positive outcomes for

Cooroy, there is no wonder this is such a brilliant place to live and work!”

Call for information to help police unearth turf thieves COUNCIL is appealing to the public for information that may help police nab the thieves responsible for a spate of thefts at Noosa Botanic Gardens, Lake Macdonald. In late June thieves stole freshly laid turf from the new children’s play area. “The plan was to open the play area for the Festival of Water but no sooner had the turf been laid, half of it was stolen,” Parks and Natural Areas Coordinator Sara Cooke said. “If that wasn’t bad enough, thieves struck again the following week, pillaging even more turf.” Last year thieves made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of plants from the gardens, including orchids donated and cared for by the Orchid Society volunteers. “This is appalling behaviour, it’s theft from the community

The theft of turf delayed the opening of the play area at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, to the disappointment of local children. and the removal of the turf not only resulted in financial cost, it delayed the opening of the new play area, disappointing countless local children and their parents,” Ms Cooke said. More than 70,000 people visit Noosa Botanic Gardens annually. The gardens are cared for by hard-

working volunteers and staff. “This vandalism is disheartening for our volunteers who invest many hours each week beautifying the facility, not to mention the hundreds of people who visit the gardens each week.” It’s believed the first lot of turf was stolen between 6.30am

Monday, June 19 and 6.30am Tuesday, June 20. Thieves lifted a second lot of turf between 6.30am Monday, June 26 and 6.30am Tuesday, June 27. “It would be a shame if Council had to limit the use of the gardens out of hours because of the poor behaviour

of a few individuals, but it’s something we may have to consider if the thefts continue,” Ms Cooke said. Ms Cooke urged anyone who may have witnessed the thefts or noticed any suspicious activity in or around Noosa Botanic Gardens to contact police.

Casual Elegance

The time has come The time has come, alas, to put down the poetic pen, I always hoped the Muse would clearly tell me when. I’ve enjoyed my writing over the years, it’s kept the old brain alive, And been grateful that my lines, have helped my soul survive. A warm thank you to those folk, who say they enjoyed my verse, Sincere gratitude to the girls at the Rag, who printed for better or worse. And thanks to all the politicians, for providing inspiration, When their performance drove us, to the point of desperation. I never really believed the poetry was that good, But just the same, I always wrote, as well as I possibly could. If the lines could cause you, a quiet laugh or two, Really that is all I hoped, and what I aimed to do. It wasn’t any challenge to Shakespeare, but when all is said and done, It kept me on my toes, and it was lots and lots of fun.

End of financial year checklist - part 2 Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank IN my last column, I wrote about THAT time of year again – getting prepared to complete your annual tax return. I spoke of group certificates, interest earned from shares and not forgetting claiming your bank fees. Now is a good time to see you accountant and financial planner to see what affect the latest federal budget changes will have on your tax situation. Income protection insurance is one deduction you need to include. You may be direct debiting this, so your insurance company should send you a statement outlining your payment. Bank fees can be claimed. Source them from your bank account statements or your bank directly. Uniforms costs associated with your work may be relevant. These include purchasing of new uniforms and the laundering or dry cleaning of them. What about any study or training associated with your work throughout the year? Costs associated with this may be relevant. Do you use your car for work? Running costs may need to be included. Investments loans over assets such as property or shares can have interest and costs included as possible deductions. Additionally running costs associated with the property may also be included. Receipts or bank statements should outline this information. This list has certainly not exhausted all possible income and claims, they are just a few of the main ones you may need to think about. Your accountant is always a good source of information. Your bank will also be able to assist you with statements and information relating to your accounts and loans. Some banks, like ours will offer health cover and may have even had incentives if you joined up before the end of the financial year. What about

superannuation and the co-contribution the federal government is offering? Is this applicable to you and have you made the appropriate contributions for the year? Lastly, what about the great rebates the federal government is offering small businesses? Have you looked into these to see if your business can benefit? Your accountant can offer further information on this rebate and your local bank manager can provide options for financing business items. If you would like to know more about how your Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches can help with you, your family and your business with a full range of banking services including superannuation, insurance or business and equipment finance, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly via geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. OUR 10-point checklist will help you on your way to living the lifestyle you desire in the years after work. In Australia, you can really retire whenever you want to, but your health and financial situation will play a big part, which is why doing a bit of research and planning could go a long way. Things to address before you retire 1. How much money will you need? Industry figures from March 2016 show that individuals and couples, around age 65 who are looking to retire today, need an annual budget of $42,893 and $58,922 respectively to fund a comfortable lifestyle—assuming they own their home outright and are in relatively good health. To live a modest lifestyle in retirement, which is considered slightly better than living on the Age Pension, an individual needs an annual budget of $23,651 and couples, an annual budget of $34,064. 2. How and when will you access your super? Generally you can access your super when you reach preservation age, which will be between 55 and 60, depending on when you were born. Meanwhile, you’ll have a few options around what you do with your super - which after age 60 you can access tax free. You may want to take it as a lump sum, move it into an allocated pension or purchase an annuity, but do think about it carefully as many Australians are looking at a retirement of 30 years or more and there could be tax implications. 3. Will you be entering retirement debt-free? A 2015 AMP/NATSEM report found 78.3% of 50 to 65 year olds still had household debt. If you’ll be carrying debt

Reports suggest that more than 300,000 age pensioners will have at least part of their pension cut, with just under 100,000 of these people losing all entitlements. 8. What recreational activities are on your list? Australians are living and remaining active for a lot longer, so don’t forget to give some thought to your physical and mental wellbeing, and whether you’ll need a bit of extra money to do things you enjoy sports, hobbies, club associations, travel, dining out or volunteering. 9. Have you given a thought to estate planning? Estate planning is not just about making a will. It’s deciding how you want to be looked after if you can’t make decisions later in life and documenting how you want your assets to be distributed after you’re gone. It can be a complex exercise, so you may want to seek professional advice. 10. Do you want to make any final super contributions? The more you can put into superannuation, the more money you will have to retire on. And, if you salary sacrifice some of your before-tax income and put it into super, you’ll generally only be taxed at 15%, which is lower than most people’s income tax rate.6 Meanwhile, when it comes to your retirement goals, we could help you navigate tax and legal implications. Please contact us on 07 5447 7740. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. into retirement, you may want to think about ways to reduce your debt. 4. Have you reviewed your insurance? You might have different types of insurance, but it’s worth checking you have the right type and that the amount you have is going to meet your needs in retirement. After all, what you require could be quite different when you’re no longer working. Another thing to think about, if you’re tempted to reduce your outgoings by cutting back on things like insurance, is that 72% of AMP life insurance claims were made by people over 50 in 2015. 5. Has your attitude to risk changed? You have more time to ride out market highs and lows when you’re young, but when you’re closer to accessing your super and retiring, a more conservative approach to investment options within and outside of super may be appropriate. A share market crash could be a lot harder to recover from than if you’ve still got decades in the workforce. 6. Will you relocate or downsize? Your living arrangements in retirement should be based on more than just your finances. Your health, partner, family and what you decide to pursue once you stop work will all play a part. But, if you are thinking of moving house to release money from your home, planning ahead could help you feel more in control and provide greater peace of mind. 7. Are you eligible for government entitlements? You may be eligible for government entitlements, such as the Age Pension, but make sure you’re across the government’s changes to the assets test which take effect from January 2017.

Local race driver warms up for the Noosa Hill Climb

WITH around 20 years racing cars in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, local Pomona resident David Falvey is gearing up for the Noosa Hill Climb on the July 22-23 weekend in his much loved 1976 SS Torana Hatchback. David says he bought the car about 20 years ago for $12,000 and has been devoted to racing it ever since. “It’s an expensive hobby with the motor alone costing in excess of $60,000. While the body shell looks pretty much the same as it was new, it’s a purpose-built race car with the mechanicals being extensively modified to cope with the strains of the staggering 630 HP motor. It’s a total beast to drive and there are incredible forces on your body when the throttle is hit,” says David.

While David is mostly retired from racing he has teamed up with other drivers from the Touring Car Masters including Keith Kassulke, Les Walmsley, Greg Jones, Ross Wilson, Mark Trenoweth, Paul Morris, and Don Dimitriadis - all are well known drivers with high performance muscle cars participating in this local event that is recognised nationally as one of Australia’s toughest Hill Climbs. Making a special appearance will be Dick Johnson and the Tru-Blu Falcon to meet and greet fans. The Noosa Hill Climb is held on Gyndier Drive Tewantin and consists of a track with 14 corners winding through State Forest. This event caters for grass roots motor sport and keeps spectators entertained with thrills and spills of close competition.

Legal mediation services available AFTER two decades of court appearances as a barrister in Brisbane, Pamela Sweetapple saw thousands of people trying to negotiate the legal system. For many, the pressure involved with court proceedings was unbearable. “The expense, the delays of up to two years, and the hostility created by trials often seemed to overwhelm people,” Pamela said. “Trials were too expensive, too painful and too destructive. I thought many disputes could be much more quickly and easily settled if people were really helped to negotiate their conflicts without the distraction of looming court action.” Now her children have finished school in Brisbane, Pamela has moved to Cooroy and decided to offer mediation services from her new legal practice ‘Consensus Mediation’ at 12 Emerald Street. “I have built a mediation garden with a stream at my new practice, “ she said. “People in conflict and distress will find it easier to relax while they try to sort out their disagreements.” Pamela is a nationally accredited, experienced mediator, and a family dispute resolution practitioner. “Many disputes can be resolved with the right help,” she said. “Mediators offer people the skills and the help they need to focus on underlying issues and regain control of their lives.” For more information phone Pamela on 5447 7637.

Cooroy Golf Club WOMEN’S Single Match Play: Match Play consists of a competition which takes place over a number of weeks where players vie against each other on a one-to-one basis with their handicaps being taken into account. Some great rounds were played between the 16 players in the competition with some going to the 18th hole and even on to the 19th. The final of the 2017 Women’s Single Match Play took place in perfect weather and conditions between Desley Walker and Wendy Morse. The match was played in wonderful spirit with Desley Walker winning 4 holes up with 3 to go. Congratulations to Desley and Wendy and to all who participated to make this such an interesting competition. While some women enjoy the competitive side of golf, it can also be played in a more relaxed setting. For beginners, the 9hole competition on a Tuesday is ideal to give you a taste of what golf is about. Phone Cooroy Golf Club 5447 6258 with any enquiries.

Diabetes Awareness Week July 9th-15th was National Diabetes Awareness Week, which is done in response to the alarming rise of diabetes around the world. The staff at your local LiveLife pharmacy can help answer your questions on diabetes! You probably hear a lot about eating “low GI foods”.....but what does that actually mean? Firstly, what are carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are a large group of compounds (including sugars, starch and cellulose) that when broken down, produce energy for the body. However, not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing low GI carbs (or “complex carbohydrates”) - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose

and insulin levels - is the secret to longterm health, reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes. It is also a key factor in maintaining a sustainable healthy weight range. Eating a lot of high GI foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. This is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary. Switching to eating mainly low GI carbs that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals. Examples of Low GI foods: Breakfast cereals based on oat, barley & bran; Basmati rice; Sweet potato; Wholegrain/ rye bread; Fresh fruit; Lentils; Baked Beans. Examples of High GI foods: Lollies and chocolate; Canned fruit in syrup; White Bread. For more information call in to LifeLife Pharmacy in Cooroy or Pomona.

Letter to the editor THE following is a private letter I received from Jim Dunstan’s son, Campbell, regarding our Jim’s health and final poem for the Cooroy Rag (which we’ve published on Page 5). It’s so lovely that I asked his permission to publish it so those who didn’t know of Jim’s current circumstances could be made aware. Thank you for your indulgence ~ Brenda Gladwood. Attached is a poem Dad wrote a short while ago, preempting the day when he might decide to retire from contributing to the Cooroy Rag. After a short stay at Eden Hospital Dad now resides at Kabara and is extremely happy there, but of course less able to do the little extras such as compose those fortnightly pieces for your local paper. I assure you that he is in good health and good spirits, has put on nearly 3 kg since moving in and partaking of the first class cuisine, lives in a modern private low-care room overlooking a patch of lush rainforest and well kept gardens and wonders why he didn‘t make such a move years ago. Although he won‘t be contributing to the Rag from this point on I also assure you that his keen interest in the comings and goings of the Rag crew and the village at large remains sharp and attentive and he will continue to be an avid reader of your mighty little newspaper. Lastly let me thank you and all the crew for being such a great support team for Dad over a long period, I truly believe his friendship with the good ladies of the Rag has been the accent high point of living in Cooroy for Dad. Both I and my sister Penny continue to visit Cooroy regularly and you are most welcome to contact either of us for any reason or simply to check on Dad‘s well being. I for one will continue to be an avid long distance online reader of the Rag and I wish you all the very best for the future. Best regards Campbell Dunstan, Murwillumbah NSW

Their enthusiastic and positive attitude, in what was a slow market at times, was very encouraging. We were always confident they were the best agents to sell our home. They were both very approachable, and kept us up to date every step of the way. We would certainly recommend them to anyone selling or buying a property. For professional people they treat you not only as clients but also individuals. I can’t thank them enough. Thanks Kevin & Jeanette Ray (Seller)

Sash & Tanya 0412 020 789 Top left - Cohen Robertson, Bottom Left - Bryce Hegarty, Right - Taylah Robertson LAST week end saw another good weekend for the Impact Boxing Academy. The team travelled to Bundaberg to compete at the Wide Bay Titles. Cohen Robertson continued to Impress as he took on local boy Richard Rollings. Both boys boxed well above their years as they put on a crowd pleasing performance. Cohen used his slick footwork combined with some accurate counter punching to win the bout via way of a unanimous decision. Next up for team Impact was Taylah Robertson. Taylah has just returned from a two week training camp at the USA Olympic training centre in Colorado Springs. Taylah’s opponent was Shylah Waikai from New Zealand. This was Shylah’s last bout before she heads off to represent NZ at the Youth Commonwealth Games. There was nothing in this bout with both girls having their moments as the rounds went by. When the bell rang to start the final round

Taylah changed gears and continued to press forward on her opponent landing with some well executed combinations. With Shylah being forced on to the back foot she struggled to keep the aggressive Taylah at bay. Taylah was awarded the win via a split points decision. Bryce Hegarty was next up for the Impact crew. Bryce’s opponent was Sean Evans from Gladstone. Both these boys have an aggressive come forward style so this bout was always going to be a cracker. In another close hardfought victory Bryce was awarded the win via a unanimous points win. Lachine Proctor fought an absolute war also on the night and unfortunately for Lachie was on the wrong end of a split decision. Once again Lachine showed that this quiet spoken young man has the heart of a lion. “Once again, I am very proud of how the team performed. They continue to grow and improve every time they climb through the ropes,” coach Mark Evans said.
