A race for everyone at King of the Mountain EVERY July, thousands descend on the Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Pomona for the annual King of the Mountain Festival. This unique festival has proven year after year to be a sure hit with all ages and is a great free family fun day. Home to Australia’s most grueling and historic mountain race, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge attracts competitors from around the world to take on the 4.5km race up Mount Cooroora and back. The race is limited to 100 competitors that undertake the race for honour, glory and personal challenge. It also attracts thousands of spectators to cheer the competitors on at the start and finish line and also to watch live race footage from the mountain top on the big screen in Stan Topper Park. This year, the 35th event will be held on Sunday 28th July and it is set to be a sure hit again with action, fun and entertainment all day. There is a race for all ages and abilities with the 2.4km Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash ideal for anyone interested in a cross country run or as an introduction for those considering taking on the Mountain Challenge in future years; the more sedate 3km Nestle Family Fun Run for families and all ages; and Queensland’s largest relay event, the Canesaid Construction Primary School Relays. If racing isn’t your thing then there is the famous Cooroy Rag World Thong Throwing Competition, which once won a Guinness World Record and the Raine & Horne Tug of War for the relay competitors. As if the racing and competitions weren’t enough the festival offers so much with heritage markets, amusement rides, children’s activities and live music including Uncle Bob’s Jug Band plus a host of entertainment throughout the day. The entire town of Pomona puts on a good show with several other activities in town on the day like the Poet’s Breakfast at the Majestic Theatre, the Pomona Palette Exhibition at the Old Railway Station Gallery and the Antiques and Collectibles Fair at Memorial Hall. The festival kicks off at 7am and ends at 5pm and is run by the Cooroy Pomona Lions Inc as a free not-for profit event, thanks to the generosity of its funding partners: Cooroy Community Branch of Bendigo Bank, Canesaid Constructions Pty Ltd, Nestle, Zinc 96.1, Cooroy Rag, IGA Pomona, Raine & Horne, True Value Hardware, Tourism Noosa and Sunshine Coast Council. For more information visit the website www.kingofthemountain.com.au or the Facebook page www.facebook.com/PomonaKingOfTheMountain Race record holder Neil Labinsky will be competing once again in a bid to emulate the Queensland State of Origin team and take out the Mountain King title for the 8th consecutive time

Young writers shortlist announced

Back row: Harry MacDonald, Mitchell Henderson, Matthew Craigie Middle row: Alise Heinzel, Penny Fisher, Front row: Finn Kotiau TOMORROW night, one talented young writer from Noosa District State High School will be honoured at the launch of Reality Bites Festival. Of the six stories shortlisted, one will pick up the Mark Tredinnick True Story award. The shortlist is: Matthew Craigie, Alise Heinzel, Mitchell Henderson, Penny Fisher, Finn Kotiau, Harry McDonald and Mitchell Henderson. Each will receive a copy of Mark Tredinnick’s Little Red Writing Book, courtesy of New South Books, and the winner will also receive a place in the ‘Writing Great Prose’ workshop with awardwinning Sydney author and columnist Mark Dapin. Then, having had the opportunity to apply what is learned in the workshop, the young writer will learn what it is to work to a deadline as the edited winning story is to be published in the Noosa News and must be de-

livered by Friday afternoon. Last year ’s winner, Jayde McGrath wowed festival patrons and VIPs with her story “Living with the Boy who Lived”. As visiting author Jane GleesonWhite wrote in her wrap up of Reality Bites 2012, “Her poise and elo-

quence coupled with the power and wisdom of her words left us dumbfounded. Over drinks afterwards all we could speak of was this amazing 16-year-old girl who had silenced us with her words and moved most of us to tears.” That is the kind of writing judges will be look-

ing for again this year. The Festival’s Education Officer and NDSHS English HOD, Louise Francis, made the topic of this year’s award Local Life - a task for assessment, so there were plenty of great entries to select from. “This is the best and most important community partnership that I have been involved in my 20 years of teaching, said Louise.”It has created a buzz around the school that exciting things are happening in our town and the award puts our young student writers in the community spotlight. The compliments and the congratulations students have received from strangers builds a positive relationship between teens and their community, challenging the negative stereotyping they sometimes experience.” The winning true story will be awarded by the inspirational principal of Cherbourg State School, Chris Sarra at the launch

of Reality Bites 2013 on Thursday evening 25 July. Chris Sarra will then deliver his festival address. The former principal of Cherbourg State School in southern Queensland came to national attention for taking on the challenges of Indigenous education and closing the gap on low expectations. Through strong leadership and a clear vision, Chris dramatically improved attendance and academic outcomes – but not without controversy. His autobiography, Good Morning Mr Sarra, talks about these obstacles and the ‘strong and smart’ philosophy Chris continues to promote not just for Indigenous kids, but as a way to approach the education of all our children. The Festival continues till Sunday 28 July. Thickets only available at the door. For event details visit www.realitybitesfestival.org

COOROY RAG Letters to the editor Homeless

24 Hour Care Food Inclusive

Fully Fenced & Secure Inspection Welcome

Please call Faith - 5447 7769

AUSTRALIA is facing a homelessness crisis. I am a mother of three school aged children that has struggled to find a home. I am a well respected member of the local community and a Scout leader from Noosa Sea Scouts. I am also Rural ambassador for the Noosa Show. My husband works for Noosa Party Hire and makes 500-800 per week on average. I have been applying for rental properties since finding out that our rental had sold but to no avail. We were forced to seek help from the Crisis Accommodation Centres on the Sunshine Coast only to be informed that they too have nothing available. I have been fed lies and even avoidance in my hunt to put a roof over my children’s head and even had to make the heartbreaking decision to tell my children that they may lose their pet when we had to start applying for properties that won’t accept pets. The most common reason for not being accepted is that many people are applying for each property and the best applicant was accepted with what seems like no consideration for most needy. I have also been told that owners do not want 3 children in a three bedroom home. But the worst sting in the tail was being rejected for a house that had been vacant for at least 4 months as the owner wanted more applicants. I have even gone as far as to recontact that agent in what could be seen as begging for her to ask the owner to reconsider saying that they could have the rent Direct Debited from my account and that I would agree to almost any conditions that they set if they would only reconsider. And they wonder why there is a homelessness crisis. We are asking that you could consider airing this story in an attempt to make our situation known to a wider community and to maybe find a resolution to our issue. The unfortunate part of this story is that we are not alone. On Gumtree there are more ads from families in our situation than there are houses. Jade McCulloch

Proposed development

I FOUND this public announcement at Syviers Road about 400m after the

turnoff from the main road CooroyTewantin up the little hill on the left side, more or less hidden in the shrubs. Because of the situation there it is nearly impossible to stopthe car. I know for some time that Telstra is planing a transmitting tower. Now we are informed, well hidden on the edge of this narrow road. Obviously they have to hide something. Let’s be honest who likes to live in the radiation field of this future monster. Werner JuenglingTinbeerwah/ Lake MacDonald

When is a local a local? JUST a question for the wider community of Cooroy on when is a local a local. On the 31st July this year I will mark having lived in Cooroy continuously for 20 years. I arrived 7 months pregnant, from Sydney and have raised two children in this beautiful town and area. I have seen many big changes here in that time, and am still enjoying our community spirit and connection to each other. I have met and still pass the time of

day with many, many people here, and believe it has everything to offer a new family moving from down south like I did. I am very proud to say that I have lived in Cooroy for 20 years and laugh and ask the question “I wonder if that makes me a local”! I think even with my weird mixed Scottish accent, the true locals of Cooroy, might agree that I am now a local............or NOT! I await your response. Fiona Garrett

BOUQUET: A number of weeks ago I met Mr Tony Wellington at Boreen Point. It was refreshing to see a local representative visiting local communities. Following my meeting with Mr Wellington I had reason to deal with the nice lady from his office numerous times. She had a beautiful accent, despite assuring me she had grown up in the township of Cooroy. She was eloquent, patient, and phoned when she said she would and I am happy to report that all of my requests to Mr Wellington have been completed. Thank you Colleen and Mr Wellington for providing a great service to your local community ~ Cooroibah Jim BOUQUET and a big thank you to medical staff, friends and family for their care, love and prayers in response to my health crisis ~ B. IT’S hard to believe that the pollies again, Have treated the electorate with shameless disdain, The public are justified in being hopping mad, And suspect once more, they are just being had, This pay rise the members claim they cannot legally refuse it, But I’ll predict they’ll find ways to ensure they do not lose it. It’s the principle not the money, that’s the claim we’ll get, But if they’ve got a choice, the money’s the way I’d bet. Anna Bligh froze the salaries, when things were economically tough, Although they were left with comfortably more than enough. However the legislation seems to make it clear, That the raises were all postponed, to be paid at a later year. No doubt senior public servants will be part of the scheme, With rises of sums, of which the ordinary people can only dream. Being a politician doesn’t seem to need much qualification, The main skill required it would appear is self-preservation.

Letters to the editor Change of material use COUNCIL is about to consider approving a change of material use on a farm at West Cooroy from low-impact rural use to intensive broiler chicken farming. The applicant is seeking approval to level ridge-tops to construct eight 100 metre by 16 metre sheds which will each hold around 35,000 broiler chickens for a six-week growing cycle and rear approximately 1.5 million birds annually. These sheds will have earth floors covered by 100 mm of sawdust litter that is cleaned out after each cycle. While noise, dust, odour and visual amenity issues are of great concern to property neighbours, the wider community will be af-

fected by potential water pollution and heavy vehicle traffic. The annual 1,460 semi trailers (including B Doubles) and other associated vehicles using the winding sealed and unsealed rural roads will pose a danger to locals and tourists. This is especially acute to those who ail have to share the Cooroy-Belli Creek Road, which recently has seen fatalities, with wide, heavy vehicles. Also, the township of Cooroy, struggling to cope with heavy vehicle through-traffic, will experience further congestion. This massive project is being sold as a complementary operation to the existing avocado orchard, but there is no way an annual total of 7040 m3 of shed waste can be spread on the slopes of the farm, since poultry litter is light and

will wash off the ground easily, rapidly entering local watercourses and creeks or moving to offtarget areas. Far from a benign operation, it is unbelievable that this proposal is nearing the approval phase with little or no public consultation. Fortunately CARA has called a meeting for early August where both the proponents of the project and those with objections will put their cases. All those interested should attend. Julia Walkden Old Ceylon Rd

Funding assistance IT was good to see that a number of Not for Profit organisations were able to obtain some assistance from Council with their excessive 2012/13 Unity Wa-

ter pedestal and connection charges. Over $365,000 of the $700,000 Council allocated was taken up by 225 Sunshine Coast clubs, almost 1/3 of that ($117,000) to 59 Noosa based organisations, with over $73,000 in Division 12 alone! Just shows how hard hit clubs were, considering only 70% of those charges were compensated through this grant. There is some suggestion that a number of organisations did not make application for funding, and I urge those organisations to follow up with their local Councillor if they are still in need of assistance. With volumetric charging to be introduced on October 1st, we should hopefully see a major reduction in the costs that Not for Profit organisations across the region will be

expected to meet for having toilet facilities available in the future. Joe Jurisevic SOS Sunshine Clubs Forum Convenor

Accounts Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy NOW we have well and truly entered the new financial year, maybe it’s time to think about your accounts. Every business has a transactional bank account, but have you got the right one? 1. Do you have specific legislative requirements to consider? This relates to your business and financial structure. For example, Real-Estate Agents and Solicitors are required to have trust accounts to handle deposits on property sales and so forth. Not-forprofit or volunteer organisations may also have particularly requirements in relation to their financial management and bank accounts. 2. How do your staff and suppliers want to be paid? Increasingly, staff and suppliers want to be paid directly into their bank accounts. If this is the case for you, you may need to ensure that your main transaction account includes this facility. In some industries, cash is still king. If this is the case for your business you will need to ensure that appropriate processes are in place for you to conveniently and safely obtain and provide the funds to your staff and suppliers. 3. How do your customers pay you? This varies enormously across industries. For some retailers it will be primarily a mix of cash, EFTPOS and credit cards. For business-to-business suppliers it might be primarily direct debit and cheques. Whatever the combination is for your business, it is important that you select an account which facilitates your combination of payment types. 4. Do you need to link to other accounts? In this day and age many businesses have multiple accounts, investment accounts, loan accounts, credit cards, partner accounts and so forth. In the case of an owner-operator it may also include per-

sonal accounts, homeloan and so forth. If this is the sort of financial structure you are dealing with, you should ensure that the account you choose facilitates transfers between these accounts with maximum convenience and minimum fees. 5. Do you require multiple signatures/approval? This is a very important issue if your business has multiple owners or if staff have been delegated a certain amount of authority over the accounting and banking function. If you want to impose transaction limits and multiple authorities on your banking, ensure that you select an account that provides this facility. 6. What are your reporting requirements? For some businesses the monthly statement in the mail is enough. For other businesses day by day transactional details are required, along with an instant balance. Think about what it is you want from your bank statements, as well as how often and in what format. 7. Talk to your Branch Manager There is always more than one way to set up your banking. If you know what it is you want from us, then we are confident that we have the range of banking products and options to meet your requirements. To talk more about your accounts or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigobank.com.au.

COOROY RAG

Pay hike is obscene, immoral and just plain wrong I WANT to assure the people of Nicklin that I will not be accepting the Government’s proposed $57,000 pay hike. Recently the Acting Premier Jeff Seeney MP wrote to me to say that State Members of Parliament were to have their pays adjusted so that they were paid $500 less than Federal backbenchers. He said this situation has arisen as a result of a pay freeze brought in by Anna Bligh back in 2009. I believe that the pay freeze was the right thing to do at the time. The Government claims that current and past Members are owed millions in back pay and the Acting Premier claims the Government has no option but to pass on this massive increase. I have obtained expert legal advice from a lecturer in law at Queensland University of Technology, and the advice is that the Government could change this law if they wanted to. The Government has refused 3% pay rises to many of our public servants, sacked thousand more and in my opinion, there is no way they can justify a

41% increase to politicians. I have also received copy of a letter, dated 13 April 2012, where the Clerk of Parliament raised the matter of Member’s salaries with the Premier. It is a disgrace that it has taken this long for the Government to act on this matter, and that it occurred while the Premier is out of the state on leave. The Government’s decision will see a $57,000 dollar wage increase to backbenchers, $90,000 increase to Minister and a massive $120,000 extra to the Premier. Many Councillors have their pay scales linked to State politicians and this is going to have a substantial flow on effect. Tax payers and rate payers should not have to wear these massive increases. I will be voting against this pay rise when Parliament resumes in August. If the pay rise is approved I will be setting the money aside to be used in the Nicklin electorate, as I did as a former Maroochy Shire councillor, when Council made a similar decision in relation to Council wages.

New website keeps community informed of Noosa Council progress A WEBSITE has been established to keep the community up to date on progress towards a new Noosa Council. Launching the Noosa Transfer Team website (www.noosatt.qld.gov.au), Transfer Manager Peter Franks said that while a full Noosa Council website will be developed over the coming months and operational by 1 January, it was important that a simple interim website providing key information to the community was developed. “The Noosa community is, understandably, very interested in finding out where the Noosa Transfer Team is at in getting ready for a new Noosa Council to start operating from 1 Janu-

ary 2014,” Mr Franks said. “This website will play an important role in keeping the community informed on all aspects of the development towards the new council. It is dedicated in providing up to date information on a range of issues the Noosa Transfer Team will be dealing with over the next 6 months.” “It includes information on the planning framework - the Transfer Action Plan - and progress towards the key deliverables. It has a section dedicated to Frequently Asked Questions, which will be added to as time goes on.” The website will also feature regular general updates from the Transfer Manager.

Cooroy Scouts DURING the recent school holidays ...scouts spent three nights and four days in Samford on a SSS (Scout Section Skills) camp. During this time the Scouts’ skills are tested by way of camping as a patrol under the leadership of a scout-aged patrol leader. Along with many of the other scout activities that are engaged in throughout the year, the SSS provides a great opportunity for the children to develop and strengthen their leadership, teamwork and self sufficiency skills through preparation of their own campsite and meals as well as ensuring their camp is clean and tidy. During the day Scouts engaged in activities that were not only fun but also tested their skills, e.g. Mudlark (pictured) tests their teamwork as well as their ability to really enjoy themselves. Each patrol (a group of 4 to 8 scouts) is judged by the leaders on their skills, and a winner is declared at the end of each event. Much to the thrill of the two patrols who attended (as well as their parents and leaders) the scores for the Cooroy Scouts were very high in the camping standards as well as overall. Cooroy Scouts section (for 10.5 to 15 year olds) currently has 24 members (boys and girls) and meets on Thursday nights at 6pm – 8pm. If you would like more information please see our website http://cooroy.scoutsqld.com.au/ index.html Date Claimer: Don’t forget our next Car Boot Sale on the 25th August. See you there!

TWO of Noosa’s oldest law firms have merged, with Chris Brinkley of Brinkley & Co Lawyers and his staff joining Cartwrights Lawyers in Noosa Heads. This follows the recent merger between Cartwrights and Bone Lawyers of Cooroy. The combined firms will maintain offices at Bottlebrush Avenue, Noosa Heads and Maple Street, Cooroy and include 8 solicitors and 15 support staff. In addition to the support staff, the firm also employs 4 full time conveyancing clerks who run

the busy conveyancing department. The partners of Cartwrights Lawyers, Mark Ostwald and Craig Griffin (who are both recognised by the Queensland Law Society as being accredited specialists in their practice areas of succession law and family law respectively) have said that the joining of Bone and Brinkley & Co Lawyers with their firm will improve its ability to service clients, both old and new. Brinkley & Co Lawyers was originally es-

tablished in Noosa in the early 1980’s and they bring a wealth of experience to the team. Cartwrights Lawyers’ own local roots extend to 1974 when Bob Cartwright established the firm. To this day Cartwrights Lawyers remain focused on providing quality legal advice to their clients. Whilst, through these mergers, Cartwrights Lawyers has become one of the largest law firms on the Sunshine Coast, they have maintained their small firm

mentality, giving personal care and attention to their clients. Cartwrights Lawyers offer experience in a diverse range of practice areas including family law, succession law including wills and estate administration, commercial litigation, residential and commercial conveyancing, leasing matters, traffic and driver licencing. All practice areas can be found at www.cartwrightslawyers. com.au. The combined firms share a strong legacy of

THE Rotary Club of Cooroy held a very successful Changeover Dinner on Saturday 29th June at the Cooroy Bowls Club. Every year Rotary leadership positions are

changed so that fresh, new energy can be injected into Club activities. Outgoing President David Cramb passed the chain of office to Incoming President Lyn

Hodges. In accepting the Presidency for the 2013/14 year, Lyn said she was looking forward to the challenges ahead. “This year’s Rotary International Theme is En-

gage Rotary – Change Lives. This Theme, I believe, reflects the Rotary Club of Cooroy’s commitment to welcome opportunities to Engage Rotary in our local and international communities and through this process, to Change Lives”, Lyn said. “The Club has a strong history in the Cooroy community, having been chartered 20 years ago on 15 May 1993. The Club has always had an active role in the community and in the coming year, we wish to build on this tradition as a vibrant force through

our many projects and new initiatives.” Helping the Club Members and their partners enjoy the night were the Member for Nicklin, Peter Wellington MP and his partner Jenny, Past Rotary District Governor Russ and Dianne O’Malley, Past District Governor Carolyn Kruger, and Rotary Assistant Governor Len Tyler. Also present were newly appointed Presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Noosa and Noosa Heads, Tess Alexandroff and Keith Trace and his partner Ros.

Community Garden THE July working bee for the Cooroy Community Garden was a busy and productive time for all the volunteers who came together to start to create a great space for the community to meet and learn about growing organically. There was a French theme for the working bee on the 14th July and the group enjoyed some jovial exchange of French words and stories and shared a delicious morning tea consisting of some French favourites as well as a delightful array of home-made goodies. Garden beds have begun to been planted out and the vegetable and herb seedlings are constantly watched by ‘Rosina’ the Garden’s not so scary well-dressed scarecrow. The next working bee will be a Hawaiian theme on Sunday 11th August. For more information about the Cooroy Community Gardens and how you can be involved, please check out our facebook page or call Phil on 0428 547 499.

COOROY RAG police beat

with Sergeant Mal Scott COOROY Police have received several complaints in regards to motorists disregarding the 40km/h speed limit in Garnet Street, Cooroy. We would all know that Garnet Street is part of the new town centre bypass road which for some has been a very contentious issue. Council has deemed this road a 40km/h road so the road rules are being enforced with radar being conducted with a view to bringing this issue under control. Of course the police are now stuck between a rock and a hard place with several residents now criticising the police presence as over zealous stating that the police should be addressing other issues of higher importance rather than this issue. My only comment in regards this contentious issue is that Yes, the police do walk a fine line in regards these types of issues in smaller communities. We are endeavouring to gain the community support by a combination of verbal warning for minor infringements and an overt presence

www.cooroyrag.com.au

so drivers know to obey the speed limit. I have also approached several truck companies and the larger employers of the Jarrah street Industrial precinct with a view to advising these companies of the above issue and I must say that all of the companies I have spoken to are very supportive of doing the right thing. Of course the good will factor can only go so far with the line in the sand being drawn at some point and drivers blatantly disregarding the speed limit are hereby put on notice that fines are being issued so when you are pulled over don’t say you were not warned. The improving behaviour of the small group of youths causing so much angst around town has continued and the community should be congratulated for playing such a proactive role in bringing about this result. The various community members know who they are and on behalf of the Cooroy community police partnership I’d like to say thank you and let’s keep up the good work by continu-

ing to report bad behaviour. Our calls for service in this regard have greatly diminished which is a result of the whole community taking ownership of this problem and the old saying that the police are only as effective as the community in which it serves has never been truer. On a different note, a 30 year old Cooroy man has been arrested and charged with Drug Trafficking after an extended and very comprehensive police investigation which saw a to-

tal of 22 offenders throughout South East Queensland being arrested and charged with serious drug related charges. The charge of Drug Trafficking is a serious matter and is basically a charge of running a business of selling and distributing unlawful drugs. This offender was a resident of Cooroy so never be fooled that serious criminals will not seek to target a place like Cooroy for their unlawful activities. Be aware of whom your neighbour is and if you note suspicious behaviour report

your concerns to the police so as the matter can be properly investigated. All information is treated strictly confidentially and verifiable information will be acted upon. A BMX bicycle has been handed in at the police station so if you are the owner of this property please contact the Cooroy Police Station on 5442 5030.

Since successfully applying for a $10 000 Traditional Owner and Indigenous Project Support Grant from SEQ Catchments earlier this year, a dedicated group of staff members, parents, students, representatives of local indigenous groups and community volunteers, have worked to create special outdoor learning areas within the school. Many of the indigenous plants and trees were generously donated to the project by Noosa and District Landcare and Brush Turkey Enterprises from Maleny. The areas have been designed to promote understanding and appreciation of Australian indigenous culture. Students will now have the opportunity to learn more about our indigenous people in the beautiful setting of the outdoor “Yarning Circle” (a replica of a local historical meeting place) with its colourful mural depicting Dreamtime stories nearby. In attendance at the official opening were (left to right) Vanessa Hounsell (SEQ Catchments), Peter Mulcahy (indigenous artist), Scott Thompson (Acting Principal), Tony Wellington (local councillor), Kathy Lavender (project coordinator), Simon Warner (SEQ Catchments CEO), Brent Miller (Gubbi Gubbi traditional owner) and Kim Maddison (Noosa Landcare).

An Art Group, a Journey & a Destination

Op Shop bus tour POMONA & District Community House will be holding an Op Shop bus tour on Thursday, August 22. Cost is only $15 including morning tea and lunch. Time: 8.15am for an 8.30am departure PCH to approx 4pm. Prize for the best dressed Op Shopper, give-aways, Lucky seat prize, discount vouchers. Bookings essential, phone 5485 2427.

Students will also be able to wander through and sample produce from the recently created indigenous “bush tucker” garden, planted with 400 native plants and trees. As identified in the new Australian Curriculum, it is a priority for all young people to gain a deeper understanding of traditional Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, the significance of these and their ongoing relevance to Australia today. The new outdoor indigenous learning spaces at Pomona State School will definitely bring this to life and engage students in learning beyond textbooks. The project has been described by Noosa Landcare as “dynamic and culturally connecting”, and Pomona State School has indeed been fortunate to have such a hard-working group of communityminded people to make it happen. A special thank you goes to the school’s Learning Support and Enrichment teacher, Kathy Lavender, whose efforts have driven this project from the start.

AT 11 am on Saturday August 3rd, Shaun Walsh, President of Pomona Arts Inc. will be opening the annual KOM art exhibition of the Pomona Gallery Artists and Friends. This year it is entitled “Jour-

neys & Destinations and it certainly has been somewhat of a journey and destination for this group – from it’s early days at the Cooroy Butter Factory, it’s move to Pomona in 2007 when it turned into the Hinterland Art Group and now, based in the Banana Shed at the Pomona Gallery it is known as Pomona Gallery Artists & Friends. This latest change was due to the group deciding on a closer alliance to the Pomona Art Gallery. The KOM exhibition opens on Friday 26th July and closes on Thursday 22nd August. A raffle with the prize of a beautiful combined painting by the group is being held in conjunction with the KOM exhibition. You can view this painting currently in the gallery or on site at during the KOM Festival. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 with proceeds going to the gallery.

New management has big plans for Pomona Hotel

POMONA Hotel is under new management and locals and visitors turned out in force last weekend to celebrate with publican Andrew I’Anson and assistant manager Brian Doyle. With raffles, t-shirts, prizes and surprise give-aways the day was a huge success and Andrew and Brian are enthusiastic about the big plans they have in store for the heritage hotel. The pair say they are keen to embrace the heritage of the hotel but will be adding their own style to the ‘Grand Old Lady’, a title they agree she so richly deserves. “The atmosphere at the hotel is electrifying and, together with the community, we anticipate taking the hotel to new heights with a capital ‘E’ on entertainment,” said Brian. “We have already improved the Sports Lounge by designing on of the biggest viewing screen in Queensland so patrons can enjoy watching all sporting codes on Foxtel and Free to Air Television and

there are new pool tables, dart boards and table tennis tables coming soon. “We’re also focussing on improving your dining experience by offering you a larger menu choice with both fine dining and counter lunches soon to be an option. “We’ll also be introducing Trivia Nights and Movie of the Week nights, so there’ll be something for everyone to get involved in,” he said. Just a short stroll down the street, at 16 Memorial Avenue, is the Bottlemart Liquor Store with a whole new variety of beers, wines and spirits. The King of the Mountain weekend will kick off the entertainment with singer/songwriter Brooke Banderas playing on both Saturday and Sunday, so make sure you pop into the Pomona Hotel and enjoy a social drink and a great meal where a good time is always assured. It’s hard to miss, but for newcomers, the Pomona Hotel is situated in Station Street. Phone 5485 1187.

THE eighth annual poker run was a huge success last weekend with over 230 participants enjoying a crisp but clear ride that toured the best of the hinterland. It was a bike enthusiast’s dream with all manner of bikes from sports bikes to tourers and from vintage bikes to those straight off the showroom floor. The route left Pomona at 9am and travelled through Cooran to the first stop in Imbil. It then headed through Brooloo and up the Obi Obi Rd through Mapleton, Flaxton and Montville before heading down to the dam wall of Lake Baroon for a hearty morning tea while overlooking the beautiful vistas of the lake. The next leg

headed through Maleny, Witta and Conondale for a stop in Kenilworth at the popular Bellbird Creek Cafe. The final leg was from Kenilworth, through Cooroy and back to the Pomona Bowls Club where there was a sausage sizzle and the awarding of prizes. Organisers were extremely pleased with the event, with a record number of riders and over $3,500 raised by the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club Inc which will go towards the organisation of the 35th Pomona King of the Mountain on 28th July. Volunteers soak up the sunshine in the hinterland 40 Tourism Noosa Volunteers enjoyed a recent visit to the Noosa Hinterland as part of their ongoing training program. The visit was one of four regional famils that the Volunteers undertake throughout the year to familiarise them with the diversity of locations, tours, activities, art galleries and restaurants on offer in the Noosa region. The famil included morning tea at the Pomona Community House, a shortened version of the Pomona Heritage Walk via The Old Pomona Railway Station and the Majestic Theatre as well as a visit to the Noosa Museum. The group then visited Cooran where a passionate local, Alison Napier gave a talk on the history of the township. Heading towards Kin Kin, the next stop was the Steve Weis Art Works where

owners Steve and Janka offered a warm welcome and tour throughout the garden. The group also enjoyed lunch by local Kin Kin catering company, Black Ant Catering. After lunch the group visited the Living Valley Springs Health Retreat before heading to Boreen Point where they enjoyed afternoon tea on the shores of Lake Cootharaba with Kanu Kapers. General Manager of Tourism Noosa Damien Massingham said “The famils undertaken by the Volunteers are an important aspect of the Volunteers training program ensuring they have excellent knowledge of the overall region so they can assist the over 200 000 visitors who visit the Visitor Information Centre throughout the year and provide quality personalised information.”

health How a past life regression changed one person’s life

COOROY RAG

By Gerald Whitehawk, Counsellor I HAVE been doing past life regression and therapy for many years in the US before moving to Cooroy, last year. This episode of a past life therapy session, which took place in Arizona, stands out in that it illustrates the power of past-life therapy. The client, a woman in her late 50’s, stated that as far back as she could remember she always had an irrational fear of cats; even seeing kittens playing gave her asthma attacks. The client stated that she

did not remember a cat ever hurting her. She explained that she would like her grandchildren, who lived with her, to enjoy the freedom to have cats. Previous counselling and behavioural therapy had not helped her so she said she wanted to try hypnotherapy. Searching for a reason for the present cat phobia by taking the client back in hypnosis to infanthood did not reveal any bad experiences with cats, but did indicate that the client had a phobia of cats

very early in life. We both felt equally perplexed. Over the weekend, an idea that the cat phobia could be the result of a past life experience began to crop up. I called the client and asked her if she would be willing to come in for a past life regression. She agreed. During the regression the client described being a young African woman who was gruesomely killed by a lion. I gave the client the suggestion that she was going to see what happened from

up above where she felt safe and she responded immediately. Upon finishing the regression the client understood that this event took place in a different life and that house cats are very different from the feline that hurt her in a different life, when she lived in a different place, and in a different body. This client’s cat phobia disappeared and later she said that she had bought her grandchildren two kittens and was amazed how she could

enjoy their play without fears or asthma attacks. Experiencing first hand that traumatic events, which we carry through into this life, took place in a distant life when we lived in a different body, in a different area, hundreds of years ago can relieve such symptoms that cannot be resolved by conventional therapies. To book an appointment with Gerald or for any enquiries, please phone Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526.

COOROY RAG

Erin Yarwood is Back in Town! LOCAL resident Erin Yarwood is continuing to do what she loves most; helping people maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. And in doing so has started up her own private Personal Training Studio in Cooroy where she does one on one personal training, group personal training and specialised fitness classes. “Probably the most popular classes at my studio are my Pilates. I like to call them ‘Pilates,

Stretch and Relax’ as I like to focus on core strengthening, stretching and deep relaxation. I believe all three elements are extremely important in maintaining correct body awareness, great posture, lengthened muscles and a sense of calm. I really love the whole Pilates concept. It is such a beneficial and important form of exercise. Everyone should have a strong core”. Erin’s studio (Erin Yarwood – Personal Trainer) is situated along Kauri Street, in the same complex as Anytime Fitness and in the same building as Dance Form. “I felt this was a perfect place to open my PT Studio. It’s such an active complex in a nice quiet part of Cooroy, but easily accessible for everyone. I love seeing all of the kids around getting excited for their dance classes – it is pleasing to see so many active kids, especially at a time where childhood obesity is at a growing rate. Miss Gemma and her teachers do an amazing job”. Along with Pilates classes, Erin also teaches Kickboxing.

“I absolutely love kickboxing. It would have to be one of the best ways to tone up and lose weight. It definitely helped me drop my overseas weight (baggage) when I returned from a year working in Dubai in 2008. My kickboxing classes are tailored for all levels of fitness and are a great self confidence and team building exercise, as you partner up. So you both get a go at punching/ kicking and also holding the pads. Those pads can get pretty heavy!” As Erin’s passion lies in people maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle, she believes in keeping her sessions at a reasonable cost for everyone. “at a time where budgets are tight, I don’t

want people not being able to train or attend classes due to the expense. I want my sessions to be affordable for everyone, so that all can take advantage of the positive benefits of exercise”. Erin’s fitness classes are $12 per class, or she has an amazing deal where you can buy 10 sessions for $100 and get an extra class free! (That works out to just a bit over $9 per class!) So there is an option for everyone. And Erin has 3 different payment options for her Personal Training sessions. Call her today for more information. As soon as you enter Erin’s studio, there is a ‘feel-good’ vibe. She has taken the minimalist approach with her fitness equipment, but there is definitely enough gear to

get you sweating. And the theme of green throughout the studio achieves a fresh and vibrant atmosphere. Each month Erin, along with friend Keith, holds a Gonging/Pilates/Tea Ritual to enliven the senses! This 1 ½ hour session is definitely worth a try! And Erin is soon to host monthly outdoor activities, free to her clients, at various beautiful locations around the Sunshine Coast. “nothing beats being outdoors!” So if you haven’t already, drop Erin a line and arrange a time to train, join her classes or simply check out her funky new studio. You’ll be pleased you did! Erin Yarwood – 0423 905 744, Unit 2/13 Kauri St, Cooroy.

Food allergy or food intolerance? YOU hear people all the time say they can’t eat a particular food because they are allergic. However, a true food allergy is not as common as you may think. In fact, the adverse reactions to food that are commonly thought to be allergic reactions are quite often due to food intolerances. Food allergy is when a person’s immune system produces antibodies to a food protein that

it believes is harmful. When the individual eats that food, their immune system releases chemicals, including histamine, to protect the body. Some of the most common allergic reactions include eczema, asthma, hay fever and in severe cases, anaphylactic shock. At present, total avoidance of the problem food is the only way to prevent a reaction. For a firm

Seniors group

diagnosis of a food allergy, an immunologist needs to conduct a skin prick test or a blood test to detect if someone has antibodies to the common food allergens. Food intolerance also causes an adverse reaction to a food, but it does not involve the person’s immune system. Rather, the symptoms of food intolerance are triggered by chemicals in food. These symptoms can often be very similar to those of a milder food allergy such as hives, skin swellings, eczema,

bowel irritation, stomach pains, headaches, fatigue, irritability, muscular aches and pains and poor concentration. Intolerances to food chemicals can only be identified by an elimination diet and challenge procedure, usually best conducted under supervision. Naturopath, Maria Sturre at Make A Different Health & Fitness explains, “The elimination diet involves following a low-chemical eating plan for three or four weeks and then we introduce carefully se-

lected foods, one by one, to identify the chemicals that cause the symptoms. Once identified, problem food chemicals, such as food additives and artificial colours and flavours, can be avoided by checking food labels and staying away from foods that contain these chemicals.” If you react to certain foods, Make a Difference Health & Fitness can help. Give them a call on 5442 6179 or visit their website on www.madhf.com.au.

DETOX, De Stress, Heal & Repair with The World’s most effective Far Infrared Detox Sauna. When toxins build up in your body, circulation can be sluggish, often resulting in a loss of vitality, an increase in pain and a tendency towards sickness and weight gain. Detox Box or Far Infrared Saunas are a revolutionary step in sauna technology. Operating differently from the traditional steam (humid heat) based sauna, it converts light into heat, providing our bodies with the ability to heal and repair. The result is comfortable conductive warmth that has multiple health benefits. This type of solar carbon technology sauna, provides heat which penetrates deep into the body tissues in a way that a traditional sauna cannot. This deep tissue warmth is great for sore muscles, stiffness & joint pain, especially the kind of chronic pain that comes from arthritis. Additionally the benefits of Far Infrared Saunas are being utilised in many types of sport and illness rehabilitation and recovery. Increased benefits of an improved circu-

latory system (aside from pain relief) are an increase in cardio vascular health, improve skin tone, relaxation and weight loss. The Workout Shed in Cooroy believes in the benefits of Far Infrared technology. It’s simple, enjoyable and comfortable to use and detoxification is in fact 7-10 times greater that a regular sauna. They have units in their therapy & wellness spa, as well as convenient home hire units. Use can use the Infrared Detox Sauna on a casual basis or members of The Workout Shed have free, unlimited access. You can also access the hydro therapy treatment spa and café whilst enjoying a therapeutic visit in a beautiful day spa setting. Individual and group bookings are welcome and treatment packages and gift vouchers are available. For more information call Penny on 5442 6338. Keeping Intouch JO Connolly, Masage Therapist at Intouch Physio, studied in Sydney at the NSW Therapeutic College receiving her Diploma of Remedial Massage before moving to the UK. Whilst residing in Bath, she was involved in the opening of an International well renowned day spa “The Green Street House” where she took further study achieving a Diploma in Advanced Beauty and Day Spa. After living in the UK for 2 and half years Jo, along with her husband and son retuned to Australia where she completed her training at the International Dermal Institute in Brisbane, and started working as an Aesthetician with a local Sunshine Coast Plastic Surgery Clinic. “Whilst working in this professional practice I had the most amazing mentoring and forged amazing relation-

ships,” said Jo. In 2011 Jo and her family moved to Woombye and began working at Intouch Physio. “Working in the Hinterland in Woombye, Yandina and Cooroy provided me with a sense of community mindedness. I love working with such a dedicated and professional team.

Tim Robinson and Carlie McKenzie, our physiotherapists and Pilates Instructors Anita Risson, Anita Allman, Rene Murphy, Su Bernays, Susa WynneHoelscher and Doris Kloster provide corebody strengthening rehabilitation programs for people from all walks of life. Our Administration Team Deborah

Don’t let fog blindfold you HAVE you even been frustrated by foggy spectacle lenses? This common problem affects most spectacle wearers at some time. An unwanted and uncontrollable “blindfold” appears unexpectedly and interferes with one’s daily life. Local optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod of optometry@cooroy say that “Thanks to award winning technology there is now an immediate, efficient and durable fog-fee solution to an age-old problem. We are pleased to be able to offer Optifog as an option on all our new Essilor spectacle lenses, whatever the prescription.” “It doesn’t matter what time of year, spectacle wearers face the problem of fogging in all sorts of situations. In summer fogging occurs most often when leaving an air-conditioned environment. In winter the problems arise when having a hot drink in the morning, when cooking, opening the dishwasher, riding a motorcycle or taking part in a sports activity. Work situations where masks or goggles are worn can be particularly problematic.” Jenny adds.

Stubenrauch, Lisa Bateman are key players who are involved with the coordination and overall operations between Woombye, Yandina, and Cooroy practices. “My involvement as a Remedial Massage Therapist allows me to work closely with the rest of the team to provide clients with the best service to

suit their individual requires. ‘’The idea of helping people feel better is what attracted me to massage therapy. I like knowing that I actually do something that improves people’s comfort and well-being and I enjoy the interaction that comes from doing this. I continue to enjoy the occupation as it offers plenty of variety, both in how the work is done and in the wide range of people who seek out massage for such different reasons. “My role sometimes works in the field of stress management and health maintenance and in the treatment of soft tissue (muscle, ligaments, tendons), injury or dysfunction. For me is all about people - teaching, nurturing , connecting, inspiring, supporting and of course talking to them.” For more information phone Intouch Physio on 5442 5666.

According to research carried out around the world, 75% of spectacle wearers would welcome an anti-fog solution for improved comfort and vision in their daily life. To find a solution to this issue, leading optical lens company Essilor conducted several years of intensive research which has resulted in an innovative technological solution to the issue of fog. Heather explains “The Optifog lens is activated with the Optifog Activator by simply adding a drop of this concentrate to each side of the Optifog lens. By gently wiping with a microfiber cloth making sure to coat the entire surface, spectacle wearers will find that their vision becomes fog-free up to one week. It is suitable for lenses that correct all types of vision problems.” For more information about Optifog lenses or any other vision issue that concerns you please contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy or call 5442 5555 for an appointment. www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

Clayton drives the new Mitsubishi Triton with Adam McGuire who has been navigating with Clayton for the past 6 years. In that time they have been National Champions in Production 4WD for 2 years running. They are now putting their skills to the test in a much more competitive vehicle. Clayton and Adam competed in round 2 of the Australian Offroad Racing championship held at Alice Springs competing in the Finke Desert Race in June. They ran a great prologue time coming first in class and 16th outright in a field of 98 competitors. Don’t Push & Burn - Mulch it!

ON Saturday the 6th July the Pomona/Cooran Rugby League Football Club held a fundraising day for Belinda Fraser. Her partner Darren Lange is a former player of the Cutters and the players wanted to help the family in their time of need with Belinda having to travel to Brisbane for cancer treatments. The day was a wear pink day and the players wore pink jerseys to show their support. A raffle and donations raised $2000 for the family. Also the club president Jason Greentree shaved his beard that he has had for 21 years for the cause. Belinda and Darren were presented with their own pink jerseys and were very thankful to the Pomona/Cooran “Cutters”.
