AS I ate my meat and TWO veggies last night whilst glaring at the pumpkin sitting on the kitchen bench with the knife steadfastly wedged in it like King Arthur’s sword, I swore that would be the last time I would pit myself against the mighty pumpkin. I shall no longer be purchasing whole pumpkins … they win. There are quite a few food items that I seem to have trouble with though and I can’t let them all win or we’d starve. Tins with ring pulls aren’t my friend. Somewhere around mid-pull I know that if I keep going one of my fingers will end up in plaster but letting go means a mass cleanup as the contents sling shot across the room. And don’t even get me started with the ham in a can. Those little keys you have to wind? … you’ve got to be kidding me! If that strip of tin starts sliding off the key you pretty much know there will be no ham in a can on the menu anytime soon. I never have much success with the re-sealable packets of cheese either. If I do manage to grasp that miniscule corner of the packet I don’t seem to have the strength in my fingertips to peel it back. Cereal is another one. The box is fine but opening that packet inside without being showered in iron man food (which obviously isn’t doing its job) is always a nightmare. I can’t go on, I’m feeling embarrassed. So there you have it … pumpkins, paster and packaging ... Coconuts … not my fave!

POMONA King of the Mountain Festival held on Sunday, July 24th, was once again a resounding success with thousands of people turning out to witness champion mountain racer Neil Labinsky win his sixth successive title as ‘Mountain King’ in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge Race. With a time of 24.16 Neil didn’t break his own record of 22.43 which he set in 2009, but said he felt really confident and relaxed throughout the race and was looking forward to competing in New Zealand later this year. Second overall was Junior competitor, 17 year old Shay Williamson from New Zealand 26.18 with Sam Clark, also from New Zealand, coming in third with a time of 26.53. First woman over the line was veteran runner Hubertein Witchers with a time of 32.38, with Sarah Stacey next with 38.06 followed by Meagan Edhouse 38.18. Trouble with political jokes Some of them get elected

The changing times: Comments made in the year 1955 !

A wise man once said, in a statement quite profound, “A politician can sit on the fence, and still keep an ear on the ground.” We get the government we deserve, at every general election, It’s a pity that like aircraft, some weren’t capable of ejection!

I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.

Old Guy Fawkes was a man, who disliked English politics, Who believed his explosive treatment, was one effective fix. Although that would not be acceptable, in this day and age, We have more peaceful methods, of venting our political rage. The thing that I found off-putting, and I’m sure I’m not alone, Was the matter of the carbon tax, they were like two dogs with a bone. The media stirring madly, self interest causing strife, A pitiful demonstration, of the worst of political life.

Question time is more a production of noisy political farce, Censure motions made in vain, knowing they will not pass. All questions to the government, must be provided in advance, So ministerial slip-ups, are not an embarrassing chance. Forever squabbling with each other, arguing with the states, Slanging matches in the House, disguised as serious debates. Appearing on the TV news, after their morning swim, Or their pathetic jogging, or a workout in the Parliament gym. The list of what is maddening, is truly quite extensive, And keeping all these people, unbelievable expensive. But in spite of all their nonsense, and the faults we easily find, Maybe we’re over critical, and possibly unkind. Their hours are long and tedious, some may work quite hard, (Although they’re not in danger, of being feathered and tarred). Our democracy has its drawbacks, some things are out of date, Especially some of the problems of friction between Federal and State. No government can be perfect, but I’d suggest Australia’s blessed, Our political system, seems miles ahead of the rest. Importantly we have freedom of speech, that’s why it’s not taken amiss, When people like me are critical, and write poetry like this!

For those who would like to enter the ‘Where’s the Rolled Up Rag’ Competition, here’s what it’s about: In each edition of the Cooroy Rag we are placing the above photo (smaller version) in one of the advertisements for you to try and find. We’ll be making it as difficult as possible (a bit like ‘Where’s Wally). All you have to do is email us at

editorial@cooroyrag.com.au or post your entry to: ‘Where’s the rolled up rag competition’, PO Box 898, Cooroy, 4563, and let us know which ad you found it in, your name and contact details. The first correct entry drawn will win a $25 dinner voucher at the Cooroy RSL Club. Entries will be drawn on August 11th. Last issue’s winner was Mrs Jan Ferris-Rose who found the ‘rolled up Rag’ in the Cooroy Hire Service ad on page 13.

Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $1,000.00 will only buy a used one. If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit; 20 cents a pack is ridiculous. Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter. If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store. When I first started driving, who would have thought petrol would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage. I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying ‘Damn’ in ‘Gone With The Wind’, it seems every new movie has either ‘hell’ or ‘damn’ in it. I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas. Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the President. I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now. It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet. It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work. I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business. Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government. The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on. There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $2 a night to stay in a hotel. No one can afford to be sick anymore. At $15.00 a day in the hospital, it’s too rich for my blood. If they think I’ll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.

Bob Abbot not standing for mayor in 2012 BOB Abbot has announced he will not contest the position of mayor with Sunshine Coast Council in the next local government elections to be held in March 2012. A veteran of 30 years in local government and the last three as mayor of Sunshine Coast Council, Bob has proudly brought his own unique, uncomplicated style as the first mayor of the fourth largest regional council in Australia. Known for his no-nonsense leadership approach and his strong belief in protecting community interests, Cr. Abbot said he

our first term as a new council. The Financial Plan and the Community Plan and a wide range of strategies and policies are in place, and the Town Plan is ready for consultation ,”he added. Bob said he will continue to work hard on delivering a service oriented council not a regulatory or compliance based one. “The challenge for the mayor and councillors of the next Sunshine Coast Council will be to balance our population and economic development and maintaining a sustainable fabric that will support the coast well into the future,” Bob concluded.

wanted to make his intentions known well before the lead into the local government elections next year. “I’ve long followed a common sense approach and feel that it will soon be time to move on with the next stage of my life. However, for the next eight months I will remain as passionate and committed as ever to serving the people of the Sunshine Coast,”Bob said. “When I was elected as mayor in 2008, I was determined to lay a foundation for the Sunshine Coast during the first 4-6 years of local government and I’m proud to say we have done that during

Transmission line project deferred for five years A PROPOSED upgrade of the electricity transmission network supplying the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions is being deferred until 2019, Acting Energy Minister Phil Reeves said.Mr Reeves said as part of its annual network planning process, Powerlink Queensland has identified temporary change to the power flows into South East Queensland. “This means the need for the proposed Woolooga to Eerwah Vale Transmission Line and Eerwah Vale Substation Project is being deferred by around five years,” he said. “Powerlink is currently consulting with landowners and other key stakeholders directly affected by the proposed Woolooga to Eerwah Vale project to discuss what the deferral means.” Powerlink Chief Executive, Gordon Jardine said the temporary change in power flows was a direct result of the recentlyannounced liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the Surat Basin area of South West Queensland. “I’m sure that we’ve all seen the news about the rapid emergence of LNG projects in the Surat Basin. What people may not know is that during their start-up phase, while export plants and pipelines are being constructed, the initial ‘ramp up’ gas produced by these projects is being sold to, and used by, power stations in South West Queensland,” he said. “This has the effect of significantly increasing the power flows into the major demand centre of South East Queensland from the Surat Basin. “As a result, during this ‘ramp up’ period, less power than usual is needed to flow down from Central Queensland through the Sunshine Coast region and into South East Queensland.” Mr Jardine said this temporary change to power flows would delay the overloads originally fore-

cast for the electricity network supplying the northern Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions, which are located within the major flow path between Central Queensland and South East Queensland. “Powerlink’s existing 275kV transmission lines in the Woolooga-Palmwoods area of the Sunshine Coast play a crucial role in transporting electricity from Central Queensland to South East Queensland. Increasing electricity demands from steady population growth and the ongoing uptake of air-conditioning meant that an upgrade to the network supplying the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions had previously been forecast to be required by 2014 to ensure a reliable supply was maintained. “This triggered the need for Powerlink’s proposed Woolooga to Eerwah Vale Transmission Line and Eerwah Substation Project for which Powerlink has been consulting with the community in recent years. However, given the recent temporary yet material reduction in the amount of power flowing through the Sunshine Coast while

the new LNG projects are under development, the need to upgrade the network has been deferred by five years until 2019,” Mr Jardine said. Mr Jardine said deferring the project would require the corridor and substation site selection process to be ‘redone’ in about five year’s time. This involves the assessment of a broad range of route options, including the prevailing environmental, social and economic conditions, and the legislative framework, at that point in time. All work undertaken to date on the project had been carried out in accordance with its Government-approved process under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 “I would like to thank and acknowledge all those who have contributed information to the project over the past four years during the Environmental Impact Assessment process. Although this latest development is due to factors outside of Powerlink’s control, we apologise for any impact that results from this change in timing,” Mr Jardine said.

EDITOR, Betty Sutton says it best in the first line of her new book: “By preserving memories of long term residents, the community is brought to life”. So it is in “Echoes of the Past”, a wonderful collection of stories from Cooroy and District families from pioneering days to the present. This book is yet another project in the long list of selfless acts born out of the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group Inc. The group now has more than 150 members and was formed in 1996. They operate a history resource library and research centre manned by volunteers three mornings a week and at other times by appointment at 41 Miva Street, Cooroy. As group vice president, Julie Kinloch puts it, the aim is to promote and encourage the study of genealogy, the heritage and history of our local area. “We’re committed to what we do and love doing it,” Ms. Kinloch said. “We provide access to family and local history resource collections and enjoy working with people to find out more about our area. Our group preserves, records and indexes historical source material, conduct workshops and shares resources and experience for members and the wider community. We have also produced an index and CD’s of photos and text of the Noosa Shire’s Cemetery headstones. “Our region’s heritage is closely aligned with the pioneering families and those who came after and the

L-R: Julie Kintoch, Edna Smith, Editor Betty Sutton with Bendigo Bank’s Fiona Hutchings project has brought together those in the community willing to share their stories,” she added. ”Echoes of the Past” is a follow up to “Pioneer Families of Cooroy and District”, first printed in 2002 and also edited by Betty Sutton, but is now out of print. “The book is a testament to all those who have contributed to it and will provide a valuable resource for future students and newcomers to the area. We hope they will discover what life was like for those who laid the foundations for what we have today and of the events that shaped their lives. In another generation much of our early history

will be lost, so we’re proud to have it in print,” Ms. Kinloch concluded. “Echoes of the Past” was also made possible by generous donations from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, the Queensland Government Q150 Community Funding Program, Sunshine Coast Council, Cooroy Rag and donations from the group’s volunteers. The book is available for purchase on-line or at the group’s library for $35.00 a copy. news Bendigo Bank Street Parade reaches new heights THE annual Bendigo Bank Street Parade in Cooroy has reached new heights, receiving funding from Festivals Australia and the Regional Arts Development Fund. Each year approximately 40 businesses and community groups participate in the street parade with around 5000 spectators enjoying the entertainment. This year is set to be even more spectacular with the funding providing the opportunity for community groups and businesses to participate in some workshops to develop their parade entries. “This is the fifth year that Bendigo Bank has sponsored the street parade which is one of the highlights of the Christmas in Cooroy festivities. The entries in the parade are always quite amazing and we expect that this year they will be even better thanks to the funding from state, local and federal governments for workshops. The theme this year is ‘Heroes & Villains” and we can’t wait to see what results from the range of workshops on offer,” explained Event Manager, Danielle Taylor. The Festivals Australia funding is for a project called “Puppet People” which aims to develop at least four large puppets that will be worn and operated by people. This project includes a master class with renowned puppeteer Bernie Ehmer, conceptual development workshop with community artist Tamara Kirby and performance workshop with Luc and Nikki Gheyson from Cirque Espace. The RADF fund is a Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Gov-

ernment partnership to support local arts and culture and the funding will be used towards the costs to run a series of workshops to create parade floats that will also become artistic objects of fascination to decorate the town for the remainder of the festive season. The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is on Saturday 3 December and Christmas in Cooroy consists of a variety of activities throughout December such as the Poet’s Breakfast, Cooroy Central Guardian Photographic Competition, the Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race, the shop window trail, decorations around town and lots of free entertainment including rides, music and more. More information can be found at www.christmasincooroy.com.au. Christmas in Cooroy is a free not for profit event hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc and the Rotary Club of Cooroy Inc. It is funded thanks to the generosity of its sponsors - Sunshine Coast Council, Arts Queensland, Festivals Australia, Bendigo Community Bank, Ri-con Building Contractors, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy Hotel, The Plantation B & B, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, David Lafferty – Hinternoosa, Firefly Solutions, Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, Wimmers Soft Drinks and Cooroy RSL. Traveston Dam removed from legislation STEVE Burgess from the MRCCC advises that all sections of the current Water Act Amendment Bill specific to the Traveston Crossing Dam have been removed from the State Development and Public Works Organisation regulations and also from the Water Act regulations, in force from 17th March 2011 and 1st July 2011 respectively. The only legislation that still refers to the Traveston Crossing Dam are the various joint Wyaralong-Traveston business adjustment schemes that were put in place under the Rural and Regional Adjustment regulations - which are still relevant and valid because they deal with the impacts of the land acquisition procedures. After many years we can finally stop lobbying to have the dam removed from legislation.

Labor’s plan is hypocrisy End of financial year check list (Part 2) on Bruce Highway Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

THE release this month of the Bruce Highway Upgrade Strategy highlights the complete incompetence of the Bligh Labor Government’s failure to take the Cooroy to Curra bypass of the Bruce Highway seriously, the State Member for Gympie David Gibson said today. “Despite independent report after independent report stating this is the most dangerous section of highway in Australia this Government has pushed out the bypass to 11-20 years – that’s a disgrace!” Mr Gibson said. “This report will come as a huge disappointment to local residents who use the Highway on a daily basis as Labor now expects them to wait an additional 11-20 years for the bypass to be completed.” “Contrast this to the statements by the then Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas in February 2006, when he said “We need the dollars to be put into the bypass as soon as we have the route – not in 10 15 years. Over five years have past since then, the route has been finalised and we now see Paul Lucas signing off on this report which pushes out the completion of the bypass to 2022 - 2031.” “I was calling on Labor back in 2006 to get on with the job of building the bypass and I’m doing the same today. What we see here is the complete hypocrisy of the Bligh Labor Government when it comes to safety and upgrading the Bruce Highway.” “This is the same state Labor Government that said nothing when the Rudd Labor Government pulled funding from the Bruce Highway bypass in 2007. It is clear from the recent media comments that the current Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace just wants to play politics with the Bruce Highway rather than get on with the job of building the bypass. This bypass doesn’t need another report it needs funding now to get on with the job of building a safer highway for all motorists to use not in 11 – 20 years.”

A FEW weeks ago I wrote an article reminding you of the obvious.... yes, it’s THAT time of year again. It’s time to get ourselves organised with our finances and tax invoices in preparation for completing your tax return. Last article I spoke of group certificates, interest earned from shares and not forgetting claiming your bank fees. Don’t forget we have also had the new budget announced recently with some changes that will affect many people. For some this is a good time to check with their accountant and financial planner to see what affect these changes will have on them and their tax situation. Have you checked into the Medicare levy and private health insurance, to see if these will have an affect on your taxation? Some banks will offer health insurance and may even have incentives to join up before the end of this financial year. What about superannuation and the co-contribution the federal government is offering? Is this applicable to you and have you made the appropriate contributions for the year? Now is a great time to check with your financial planner for the important changes that have occurred regarding superannuation. It’s also a great time to call in and see the wide range of services banks provide above and beyond your every day banking. Lastly, are you aware of the rebates the federal government is offering small businesses? Have you looked into these to see if your business can benefit? Your accountant can offer further information on this rebate and your local bank manager can provide options for financing business items. If you would like to know more about how our Community Bank branch can help you with financial planning, personal banking or a wide range of financial products, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings @bendigobank.com.au.

Wellington’s Way

With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington I HAVE written to the alternative premier Campbell Newman seeking assurance that he will not build dams in the Mary Valley, and that if elected he will remove the current restricted sites in the Mary Valley and its tributaries from the State Government regulations. People in our area have lived in fear for too long and we need absolute assurance from the alternative premier that he will not drought proof Brisbane by destroying the Mary Valley. What deeply concerns me is that Mr Newman has stated publicly that if elected he intends to change State law to stop Federal Government intervention. The reality is that if the Federal Government had not intervened in the State Government’s plans for the Traveston Dam it would have been built. Contact me regarding pipeline issues: It is important that property owners who have concerns about issues regarding the northern pipeline contact me as early as possible and before contractors enter their properties to carry out pipeline work. I continue to attend inspections and meetings with residents and representatives from the Northern Network Alliance pipeline construction company and government in relation to on-going impacts that the pipeline work is having on property owners. Noosa High school awards well deserved: It was great to be able to return to my old high school to present an award to a group of outstanding students. The broad curriculum and wide variety of technological skills our stu-

dents are exposed to these days is a far cry from when I attended Noosa District State High School. I was certainly impressed with all of the student groups’ business plans, imagination and electronic skills in creating a cafe business plan and presentation. All of the students worked well as teams to achieve some pretty impressive outcomes Cooroy CWA celebrates 84th birthday: Congratulations to the CWA branch members and in particular President Wendy Bebbington, who after years of effort successfully bought land adjacent to the Cooroy CWA from Queensland Rail. I was happy to be able to help them when negotiations broke down. Jenny and I enjoyed the 84th Birthday Party and celebrations of the successful purchase recently The celebration served as a great occasion to reflect on how the Cooroy CWA has always been involved in our community, and this recent land agreement will ensure that the branch will be able to continue to provide a very important service to Cooroy and district. I must confirm that the CWA ladies’ reputation for great home cooking is well in tact, with a great spread of food well received during the celebration. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, September 1. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !! Congratulations on surviving another tax year. As the new year has just ticked over I thought I might provide an update on some of the new initiatives that have started since 1 July 2011. Dependant Spouse Tax Offset: Phasing out the Dependent Spouse Tax Offset for taxpayers with a dependent spouse who turns 40 on or after 1 July 2011 will reduce disincentives to work. The Govt will phase out the dependant spouse tax offset for taxpayers with a dependent spouse born on or after 1/7/1971. Expanding the Education Tax Refund (ETR): Cover school uniforms, including optional uniforms and sports uniforms. This applies to uniforms purchased after 1 July 2011. Tax: To reduce access to income splitting by high income earners, the Low Income Tax Offset will no longer be available for the unearned income of minors, from 1 July 2011. An example of unearned income is a distribution from a discretionary trust Medicare Levy: Flood and Cyclone Levy (only effect 2011 -12) – Those taxpayers with a taxable income in 20112012 of $50000 or less will not pay the levy. Taxpayers with taxable incomes between $50,001 and $100,000 will pay .5% above of their taxable income above $50,000. Taxpayers with taxable income over $100,000 will pay .5% over $50,000 and 1% over $100,000. Exemptions to the levy: • Received an Australian Govt Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) for a disaster event in 2010-11; • Is directly affected by a national disaster recovery and relief arrangement (NDRRA) declared disaster in 2010 – 2011 This is just a snap shot of some of the initiatives that have commenced since 1 July 2011. If you would like further information on how this might impact on you, please call your accountants or Seb Vecchio from SPV Accounting on 5442 6884.

Landholder grants available to help with conservation projects SUNSHINE Coast rural landholders looking to carry out conservation work on their property are encouraged to apply for a grant under council’s Landholder Environment Grants program. Planting native trees to improve wildlife habitat, fencing waterways to exclude cattle and other livestock, soil erosion control and pest management are just a few examples of the type of projects council can help with. Council officers are on hand to offer advice and support to people who are keen

to apply, with expressions of interest open from Monday 1 August until Friday 19 August 2011. An application process will follow. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said rural landholders play a big part in protecting the Sunshine Coast’s biodiversity as almost 75 per cent of our region’s our natural areas are in private ownership. Landholders can apply for assistance to carry out projects such as: fencing to restrict stock access to significant vegetation, creeks and rivers; installing off-

Kenilworth parks progress MORE inviting recreational spaces. That’s the aim of Sunshine Coast Council in its current upgrades to Charles Street Park and Isaac More Park in Kenilworth. Division 10 Councillor Paul Tatton said the first stage of works were currently underway at both parks. “At Isaac Moore Park council has installed low timber vehicle barriers to the park perimeter and will plant about 20 native shade trees in the lawn and extend the native bush tucker garden during the upcoming spring months, he said. “Stage 1 works in Charles Street Park include minor regrading, levelling and partial returfing of the large grass area. Along with this, around 20 native shade trees will be planted in late spring. Council has also purchased native plants and weed control matting to commence revegetation works on the western river bank in late Spring, possibly by community working bee. “Council is considering the installation of permanent vehicle barriers near the eastern end of Charles Street to contain cars in the western end of the park and to protect the river bank. Council is also investigating relocation of the adjoining farm fence to its correct boundary alignment, to enlarge the park. Cr Tatton said community consultation feedback had been incorporated into the concept designs for both parks. “Local residents identified a number of priorities for Isaac Moore Park including additional tables and seating; BBQ facilities; shelters; local natural and cultural heritage interpretation; a bush tucker garden; and additional car parking, he said. “In Charles Street Park the priorities were river bank revegetation and weed control; walkways and seating; additional shade tree planting; and car park areas. New walkways and seating are currently on hold due to part of the park’s river bank being washed away during the flooding early in 2011. Council and community members will continue to investigate funding opportunities for the future stages of works to both parks.

THE 15th Birthday of Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group was celebrated at the Cooroy RSL Club in July. In 1996 the Foundation Members met in the ticket office of the Cooroy Memorial Hall but the Guide Hut at 41 Miva Street, Cooroy became the Group’s home in 1998. Over the years the Group has continued to expand their interests through seminars and informal talks on a wide range of topics. The research room is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to 1.00pm where visitors and new members are welcome and Duty Librarians are able to help with information. John Sparrow who is a volunteer with the Ridgewood Fire Brigade will give a talk on ‘Fire Prevention’ on Saturday, 6th August from 1.30pm. The talk will be followed by the General Meeting of the Group. ‘How to Start Your Research’ classes will be held on Saturdays, 13th and 20th August from 1.00 to 3.30pm at the research room. MEMBERS of the Cooroy Probus Club are doing their bit to keep the Noosa Hinterland economy humming along - especially the restaurants. This week we were caught enjoying ‘the best ever’ pizzas at Mannie’s of Pomona. Mannie, himself and Debbie spoilt our group with their hospitality, specialty pizzas, pastas and salads and mouth watering desserts. Be warned, we will return ! Many people are asking “What is Probus?” Probus Clubs are an odd shoot of Rotary - a local group of retired professional (pro) or business (bus) people who gather at least once a month for fun fellowship and a jolly good time....and we at Cooroy Probus do that well ! For more information just ring Carol and Trevor Blake on Ph 5442 6671.

The day starts at 6.45am where we are in place to control traffic for the foot races around the streets of Pomona. We then help out with the school children’s races around the main part of town. And then on to the main event of the day where we send people up Mount Cooroora armed with first aid kits, stretchers and water for the competitors. Those in position on the mountain also monitor competitor positions and are on hand to help if needed. The SES Cadets turn out in force for this event too as we need as many people to man the race course as well. It is always very exciting to be part of this huge day for our region. We’ve had a number of motor vehicle accidents over the last few weeks, with most of them single vehicle accidents. So perhaps it is timely to remind people to stay alert when driving. Luckily there have been no major injury incidents. I’m wondering if, hopefully, the majority of us are paying more attention to our driving skills and habits. With the wet weekend just past, we were sure we’d be called to numerous incidents, but not so. Certainly the accident rate seems to be lower. This is all good news. Fire season is certainly starting and after the wet summer there has been a lot of growth which is now drying out considerably. The high winds due in August assist hazardous conditions, so don’t forget to check with the Rural Fire Service if you are wanting to burn off rubbish. We had a good turn out for induction of new members a few weeks ago. We now have 15 new members in the Noosa Unit, all keen to move forward with training to become active members, skilled up to help out in our community. For any other information on the local SES please call for Cooroy, Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102.

Combined Coastal Removals

MasterHire

COMBINED Coastal Removals has been a family owned & operated company since it was established in 1985. We are a small and dedicated company. The owner, Owen O’Keeffe has kept his company small for this very reason. This might explain why we often move some clients more than 5 times. They use our service every time because they know we are consistent, reliable & reasonably priced. Removals: We have three, well maintained & presented, purpose built furniture pantecs to cater for your move. They range in size from 50 cubic metres, for larger moves, down to 35 cubic metres. We give free, no obligation quotes or we can charge by the hour, whichever you prefer. Storage: Our modern, clean storage facility is based in Cooroy. You have the choice of Warehouse or Mini-Shed storage. The Warehouse is fully alarmed & monitored & unlike larger removal companies, Packing: We have new cartons, tape, paper, dust covers, port a robes & bubble wrap in stock. We also sell second hand cartons (when available). Pre packing is no problem. We have experienced pre packers to pack your whole house or just a few cupboards. You can call or e-mail for a free packing hints sheet if you are doing the packing yourself.

Got a Job to do? CALL in and see the guys at Master Hire in Jarrah St. With a range of larger equipment such as Mini Excavators, PosiTrack loaders, Post Hole borers or even Floor Sanders, Master Hire has reliable equipment to hire without the need for any special licenses. Cameron and Paul pride themselves on providing proper training on all equipment to ensure the hire experience is successful. A popular option for many with large projects is Master Hire’s weekend deal which is to pay a one day price from Friday to Monday. Call the guys today for more details.

The results will better help Pomona IGA meet customer needs and make their shopping experience more enjoyable. Thank you to all the shoppers who participated and congratulations to Patsy and Michael Fayne who were the lucky winners of the digital radio.

Noosa Museum - Centenary Celebration OUR building will be 100 years young in 2011 and, on September 13th, 2011, it will be 100 years since these premises were first used by the then original Noosa Shire Council as its Chambers. As a result, on Tuesday, September 13th, 2011, an ‘old fashioned morning tea’ will be held to commemorate this occasion. Mayor Bob Abbot (who was the last Noosa Shire Mayor as well as being the first Sunshine Coast Mayor) has agreed to attend. The Noosa Museum has been housed here at 29 Factory Street, Pomona, since 1985. As its current

tenants, we at the Museum would like to talk to all past Chairmen/Mayors, Councillors, Council staff/ employees, and their families and descendants so that we can all celebrate this special day in September. We have begun a ‘Contact List’ and would appreciate all the assistance we can get with filling in some of the blanks. Please contact the Museum on 07 5485 1080 (Tuesday – Thursday; Saturday & Sunday from 10am – 4pm); email – noosamuseum@spiderweb.com.au; or postal – PO Box 87, Pomona QLD 4568.

TURNING more than 40 Sunshine Coast residents into mythological characters, fairies, elves, eloping lovers, domineering parents, Ancient Greek tradesmen, servants, musicians and courtiers, all able to evoke the magic of Shakespearean language, is a task most directors would politely turn down. However Eumundi’s Eileen Walder relished the challenge of bringing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, one of the world’s most loved plays, to a new generation of actors and audiences. Born in Warwickshire and a former Drama and English teacher, Eileen believes people are only put-off Shakespeare by poor teachers who treated his plays as boring, incomprehensible and outdated. “His plays were never meant to be read in a classroom, sitting at a desk . They were written to be watched and enjoyed by real people, many of whom had little if any formal education.” Eileen said. “It’s only when you see the actions, facial

expressions, hear the jokes, sexual innuendos and emotional beauty of the poetry, you realise his characters, themes and stories are still relevant to us today.” Shakespeare’s plays were always spectacles combining music, singing and dance along with lavish costumes and numerous sight gags to offset the serious passages. This production stays true to the original with the same blend of Ancient Greece mixed with down to earth Elizabethan humour. Set in Ancient Athens the cast wear around 60 incredible costumes, designed by Synda Turnbull with Wardrobe Mistress Margaret Courtney, to create the atmosphere but there is also a traditional Elizabethan madrigal and courtly dance. However a major highlight is the magical music especially composed for this production by local musician Andrew Healey, choreographed by Brigette Kay. In selecting her huge cast Eileen ignored any lack of experience or knowledge, choosing

Bottom (Stephen Moore) receives some special attention from Titania (Summer Bowen) and her fairies. people who were enthusiastic about being involved. “If they want to learn, I will use them and bring out talents they didn’t know they had. “I ignore those who only want leading roles. A production likes this needs everyone to give 100% and every single

person is vital to the success whether they have lines or not,” Eileen said. Bookings are well underway with several large groups already securing their seats. Tickets are Adults $26, Concession $22 or $20 groups of 10. Dates: July 27, 28, 29,

Hitting the road healthy WITH one in five drivers experiencing a long-term vision problem, Cooroy optometrists, Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod, are calling on motorists to remember the important role of vision in safe driving. “Most of us think to check our mirrors, tyres, oil and water before hitting the road, but forget that eyes need servicing too,” said Heather. Critical decisions made by drivers are predominantly based on sight and good vision is essential to a driver’s ability to identify and react to hazards, make accurate judgments and concentrate on the roads. According to Jenny, our vision becomes even more important when driving at night, fatigued, on busy roads, in poor weather conditions and as we age. “Regular eye examinations provide the best chance of staying safe on the roads and being able to keep driving longer as we get older,” she added. Tips for Staying Safe on the Roads · Avoid eye strain Using your eyes intently for hours causes eye strain and increased sensitivity to glare. Try moving your head around slowly while still looking straight ahead. This will allow you to change your eye posture without taking your eyes off the road, helping your eyes to relax. · Rest your eyes

Driver fatigue can affect reaction times, alertness and concentration. Set realistic travel goals and avoid driving at times when you would normally be sleeping. The best way to overcome eye fatigue is to pull over, close your eyes and rest. · Plan your journey Before driving long distances, make sure you are well rested. Allow plenty of time for regular rest stops to give your eyes a break. · Look after your eyes Accumulated UV exposure can lead to eye disease and vision impairment. Wear sunglasses to reduce glare and squinting while driving and protect your eyes from sun damage. Also, maintain a healthy diet including fruits, vegetables and fish to help prevent eye disease. · Monitor your eye health As we get older, our vision inevitably changes and this can start to affect our driving, including our ability to see clearly at night, objects in the distance and out the corners of our eyes. If you notice any changes in your vision, consult an optometrist immediately. For further information or an appointment for an eye examination please contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy or phone 5442 5555. www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

Smile at life MARC MARON - Marriage is not all about love: It’s not all about love. That’s half of it ... the other half is about that moment you have with yourself when you’re looking in the mirror, and you just go, ‘Oh man. I’m going to compromise my dreams, get fat, sick, old and die someday. I kind of want to have someone around for that.’

Women’s clothing swap fest ALL women love to shop but often don’t buy what suits them, so every woman seems to have garments hanging unused in her wardrobe. With this uncertain economy no one can afford to waste money buying something they don’t use, yet everyone needs clothes to wear. So what do we do with the clothes we don’t want? The answer is simple; swap it for something you do want to wear. My Unique Style’s professional stylists, Pamela and Natasha have arranged a Clothing Swap Fest, with a difference, at The Memorial Hall in Cooroy on Sat. August 13th 9am – noon This is a swap with information, from stylists, on the types of clothing for particular body shapes and how to wear styles and colour, that truly do suit and enhance women’s bodies. This will help women, on the day, to decide what garments they should be wearing and swapping. With this knowledge,

Noosa Hinterland Denture Services

women will be able to buy better for the future and save money from unwanted purchases, as well as taking home some new pieces that suit them. Ladies bring the quality clothing that you would be happy to take home. Also available will be stalls with advice on lingerie fitting, skincare & makeup, counselling and women’s health & fitness care. One lucky woman will be chosen for a wardrobe make over, including hair and makeup and deportment tips, valued at over $400. The Door will open at 9am, close for privacy at 9.45am and the swap session will close at noon. All clothing not swapped will be donated to charity. Entry is $10 pp. and refreshments will be available. This is a women’s only day, so the men are asked to please look after the children. For further information please contact Email; myuniquestyle&live.com.au or phone Natasha 0437 226 005 or Pamela 5442 5620.

Noosa Care takes a new direction in catering

NOOSACARE management has identified the need to provide a new direction in food preparation for its residents at Carramar in Tewantin and Kabara in Cooroy. A lack of satisfaction and performance provided by an external caterer has prompted them to take their own catering on board, employing two qualified, experienced chefs and catering staff. Resident satisfaction is a priority, and although this is a big step, management is confident it can deliver quality food and service. A “meet and greet” was held recently providing an opportunity to introduce the residents to chefs Gilbert Rousset and Marita Bawden. Gilbert, born in France, has worked in Jersey in the Channel Isles, England. And also a famous restaurant in Covent Gardens, catering to a regular clientele of the rich and famous, including Cilla Black and John Cleese. He received much praise from food critics and even had some of his recipes published. Gilbert moved to

Is it time to Vaccinate your Pet?

Vet, Craig Marshall

VACCINATION time presents veterinarians with an opportunity to assess your pet’s health and address any concerns regarding their well-being. Craig Marshall of Get the Vet! has over 16 years experience and offers housecalls for your convenience.

Early protection of puppies allows for socialisation from a young age and for this reason, Craig prefers to use an available modern vaccine which will fully immunise against distemper, parvovirus, canine hepatitis and canine cough from 10 weeks of age without the need for

further puppy boosters. This means you can get your new pup safely out and about much earlier than with the more traditional vaccines. In older dogs, the same core vaccine provides immunity for 3 years. For more information

about triennial vaccines, heartworm prevention, or to make an appointment for any other health concern, contact Craig on 0418 388 341 or make an enquiry via our website at getthevet.com.au. Compare our fees and Get The Vet! to your pet!

Are your kids’ shoes wearing you out? IT is back to school for the second half of the year and already some children have worn their shoes to within a few footsteps of the expected mileage. Some kids just wear their shoes down through activity and sometimes through poor foot posture / control inside their shoes. Early in the year we as parents are bombarded with lots of good information about getting our kids shoes correctly fitted for their foot-type and size, but we need to be vigilant for the latter half of the year also for wear and fit. Your little-ones feet will grow 90% of their adult size in their first 12 or so years and will go through 17 full shoe sizes! It is not uncommon during a year with very active growth spurts to have to upsize your childs shoes. Our children are spending around 30 hours a week in their school shoes, which is in excess of 1200 hours each year or 15,000 hours during their total school years! And as their feet are developing at such an incredible pace, it’s imperative that kids wear school shoes specifically designed to support the requirements of their growing feet. Wearing correctly fitted school shoes reduces the risk of injury, improves comfort and can enhance performance when they are at play. Because of the greater flexibility in a child’s foot compared to an adult’s foot, childhood foot

problems are less common than adult foot problems. That doesn’t mean that foot pain and even foot injuries don’t still occur when a child routinely plays hard in overly flimsy shoes. Children may not be mature enough to realize that a foot condition is developing until the pain can no longer be ignored and thus may not receive a diagnosis as early as they should. Just like adults, active kids need shoes that provide adequate arch support and heel support and absorb shock to reduce stress to joints while they exercise. The major difference between an adult’s and a child’s therapeutic school / running shoe is that a child’s shoe tends to provide less motion control to allow little feet to continue to grow and develop without unnatural hindrance. Most kids are actively participating in winter sports regimes through clubs or at school, and have given their school shoes a right hammering by now. The leather on our boys school shoes has had a severe beating and already the forefoot and heels are showing some signs of wear. As parents we all need to have a look at our kids shoes and make sure that the wear is occurring evenly or somewhat near enough for the type of activity the your little one participates mostly in. This wear pattern may well be an early indicator of some more

complex foot and leg conditions that create imbalances during growth. Clinically we see children with lower limb complaints from activity in poorly supporting shoes and even hip and spinal issues arising from the similar footwear issues. It is important at this stage of the year, with winter sports in full flight, to monitor your child’s wear and tear on their shoes and their body. Just like checking your tyre wear on the car, your child’s shoes may indicate an alignment issue. This may indicate some preventive measures in the form of better footwear for control or even an orthotic intervention for more serious foot control issues. We do need to be mindful in the growing child of some less common complications arising from their feet such as spinal curvature and hip weakness as a result of foot posture or leg length discrepancies. School shoes can even tell a story though wear and tear of postural imbalances from heavy schoolbags worn incorrectly resulting in hip and spinal pressures that are imbalanced. If you have concerns about your child’s feet or lower limb biomechanics, contact an experienced physiotherapist or podiatrist who can guide you on the correct course of action. Craig Steele is a sports physiotherapist at Hinteractive Physio. He can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Speaking up to save lives IN the wake of the recent cyberbullying tragedy, Kids Helpline is urging young Australians to speak up about their concerns, particularly regarding any form of bullying, harassment or violence. Kid Helpline General Manager Wendy Protheroe said suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs when a young person feels so isolated and alone they believe the only option is to take their own life. “Everyone experiences stress and major challenges at some stage in their lives, however, young people often don’t have the life experience to realise they can overcome them,” she said. “Cyberbullying can be particularly difficult as it often leaves young people feeling nowhere is safe for them – the bully invades their private life, even entering their bedroom through texts and social networking sites. “It can have serious and negative effects on young people’s self-confidence, self-esteem, friendships, school grades and attendance, and family relationships.” According to Kids Helpline research, many children and young people repeatedly fall victim to cyberbullying, with the most common forms including name-calling, abusive comments, harassment, exclusion, impersonation, threats of harm, defamation, spreading rumours and public humiliation. In 2010, Kids Helpline conducted almost

2,400 counselling sessions where young people were worried about bullying or cyberbullying and harassment. The Make Cyberspace a Better Place campaign includes an education pack for schools and detailed information on the Kids Helpline website for children, young people and parents. “Our kids and teens sites also have dozens of stories from young people talking about their experiences with bullying and other issues including mental health and relationships. Reading others’ stories can help young people realise that they are not the only one difficult things have happened to and that there is help out there – there are things they can do to improve their life. Kids Helpline offered these tips to young people experiencing cyberbullying: • Remember it is NOT your fault • There is help available (teachers, parents and counsellors can all be helpful people to talk with) • Block the bullies from sending messages or emails or stay off line for a while • Report it – to your school, ISP provider or the police and take legal action if needed • It can help to keep copies of abusive messages because they can be used later as evidence “The most important thing for young people to realise is they need to tell someone. Speak out and keep telling people until they

Street appeal, have you got it? IF you’ve always fancied yourself living in that gorgeous old Queenslander or sitting back in one of those stylish cool apartments around the corner, then the chances are you have been drawn in by street appeal. It’s the magnetism, the charm, that certain “je ne sais quoi” that appeals to your style and sensibili-

ties of. It is well known in the industry that houses that have it, sell quicker than those that don’t and to get the very best price for your home you really need to have it. With little effort, and a little insider knowhow, you can maximise the potential value of your home by increasing its street appeal. So now you know what it

is, here are my tips on making it happen for your home too. First things first. Tidy up the garden. Get rid of everything that doesn’t belong there. Mow the lawn, trim the edges, pull the weeds, prune the shrubs, add some colour to the flower beds, turn over that veggie patch and mulch, mulch, mulch! Cast a critical eye over the landscaping, it can significantly improve the value of your home. If that sounds all too exhausting or you can’t be trusted around tools, get the local landscaper in, professionals are by definition, professional! Next, it’s amazing what a splash of paint will do; paint is an affordable way to transform the appearance of your

home. If you can’t afford to paint everything, then be selective, do the trim, the fence and the gates. Alternatively rent a power washer. You can wash down the entire house or just do the eaves and the walls. Start at the top, work your way down and make sure you blast away all the dirt at the bottom of the walls. Finish up by turning the pressure washer on the drive and foot path as these are the first things a potential buyer sees. To complement that work don’t forget to clean the gutters, this is a biggie, home buyers tend to think that if the gutters are full of leaves, branches and the odd stranded possum that the home owner isn’t quite as diligent about

property maintenance as they should be. A new letter box and some new street numbers help create a good first impression too. Last but not least. When all the work is done and you’re thinking “this place looks so good I don’t think I want to move” it’s time for the photos. More and more people are using the internet to shop for homes and you need to make a good first impression; Professional photography will make sure your Street Appeal works as good on the net as it does in real life. Professionals know how to showcase your property’s best features they don’t cost the earth and they really help do sell your home. Follow these basic tips

and you will improve the Street Appeal of your home, you will attract more buyers and with that, get the best possible price for your property. For more infor-

mation on how to list and get the best value for your property you can always call Melanie Fink from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland on 0488 107 205, Brilliant.

IMPACT Boxing’s rising star, Benny “The Bulldog “ Cameron-Hands continued on his winning way at the weekend. Ben won his second fight in three weeks when he travelled to the Gold Coast. Ben’s opponent was Jake Hargreaves from the Shamrock Boxing Club at Maroochydore. Both boys were undefeated going into the contest. Hargreaves had a height and weight advantage over the pint sized “Bulldog”. From the opening bell Ben was on his toes and moving superbly proving to be a hard target to hit for Hargreaves. Ben was scoring at ease with his accurate punching ability and was eventually crowned the winner by way of a points decision. ”Ben proved again tonight that he is

shaping up to be a class above his opponents. His footwork was awesome, he was evasive and was able to counter punch his taller opponent at will. At just 11 yrs of age he is boxing well above his years already,” Coach Mark Evans said. Also fighting was Ben’s big brother Sam Cameron-Hands. Sam was very unlucky to lose his bout by one point in what was an action packed bout with both boys putting in a stellar performance. “I thought Sam had done enough to get the decision. He dug so deep and fought his heart out as always,” Evans said. The Impact Boxing team will head to Bundaberg this weekend to compete at the Wide Bay Titles.

WITH winter always comes the end of nights bowls and Kenny Christensen and his Business Bowlers were determined to keep their hand in with a challenge to the other night bowlers the High Rollers on Sunday 3 rd July. Sponsored by Carlton Midstrength, the game comprised 2 sets of speedbowls with the BB’s looking hot to trot in the first half hour of play and was up on 5 rinks. However, all sweet things can quickly come to an end, and from there on in the High Rollers showed their might and left the BB’s crying into their beers and bubbles to a resounding win with margins that cannot be printed! Congratulations to the High Rollers on getting the silver spoon, to the BB’s on their wooden spoon, and to SEC Constructions who managed the best performance from the BB’s. Thank you to all players, it was the best fun and we look forward to another challenge before winter ends!

Noosa Junior Pirates Rugby League WHAT great statistics from the mighty Noosa pirates U12’s gold team who recently travelled to Gladstone for the Jason Hetherington Cup rugby league carnival! Twelve games over two and a half days; more than 6hrs of footy remaining undefeated; and winning the cup! The team made the long haul up to Gladstone last Thursday not knowing what to expect as they were the first team from the sunny coast to attend this carnival; coming up against teams from all over Queensland. As the boys warmed up for their first game, the opponents were overheard as they quipped Noosa to be just a warm up game; easy beats. The boys were out to impress though; within three minutes of the game Nick Thomas had crushed his way through what would be defenders to score a length of the field try. Six trys later and not having our line crossed once, the opposing team had a new found respect for the boys. This trend continued throughout the day with Noosa playing the perfect team game. Captain Jackson lead by example, Lachy threw passes that could only be described as NRL like, and

Mitch hit the holes with precision. After a great day of football and the previous late night, the boys went back to their camp at Lake Awonga where bbqs, camp fires and cooking marshmellows really brought these boys together as a group. Their behaviour was outstanding both off and on the field. Up early on day two for the carnival and once again the boys impressed first up with a strong win. Being the third day away there was some weary eyes in the team but coach Noel Goldthorpe addressed the team on the importance of not dropping their bundle and even though we were challenged by some strong opposition, the boys lifted and came through the day as one of only two teams to go through the carnival undefeated. Noosa devastated the Rochedale side that included two Queensland players in the first final of day three, and the team really hitting its straps with a final score of 360. Moving onto the next game was do or die; lose and you’re out. This wasn’t an option for the mighty Pirates and the Seagulls were trounced 40-0. Then onto the big one,

Grand Final time! The team announcer read out the team; 1. Glenn Jarrett, 2. Brin Lloyd, 3. Sammi Rejeb, 4. Asher Buckman, 5. Odin Cussen, 6. Jackson Sheffe (C), 7. Lachlan Langton, 8. Nick Thomas, 9. Harvey Hope, 10. Aaron, 11. Lachlan Crowley, 12. Thomas McClune, 13. Mitch Javenic, 14. TJ Quigly, 15. Isaak Mclean, 16. Nick Alyward, 17. Jackson Rau, 18. Zane Embleton. The Grand Final was against Rockhampton Brothers and with the Pirates the only team still undefeated the opposition had full support of the

crowd. This didn’t unsettle the boys and they flew away to a 16-0 half time lead. The second half the boys started to tire and brothers started to lift scoring a try making it 16-4. Brothers kept coming at Noosa but our defensive line was outstanding. Final score 20-4! Noosa Pirates U12 gold 2011 Jason Hetherington Cup Champions! Noosa and the Sunshine Coast should be very proud of this team. They not only showed their great footballing talents but outstanding behaviour, sportsmanship and how this great game

should be played as a team. Well done boys, fantastic job. A big thank you to the managers Helen, Darren McClune and coach Noel Goldthorpe who did a wonderful job organising the bus, food and accommodation for all the players and parents. Noel has done a fantastic job with this team and is one very proud coach. Thanks to the support team Mick (Alfie) Langton, Paul Lloyd and Chandler Kamradt for your work on the ground. Also thank you to the sponsors who made this great trip happen. Nathan Mclean, President NJRL.
