The Rotary Club of Cooroy set up a work station outside the school to assist police with fixing special anti-theft screws to vehicle number plates THE Rotary Club of Cooroy assisted local Police Sergeant Mal Scott, police volunteers and the local State Emergency Service to ‘Turn the screws on Crime’ this month. On July 18 they set up outside Cooroy State School to fit special oneway screws to vehicle number plates. The one-way screws cannot be removed with conventional tools cutting the chance of vehicle theft and assisting the police to detect and solve crime. During the two hours they fitted 120 vehicles with the special screw for no charge. “Rotarians were happy to donate their time to this Queensland Police initiative and to contribute to crime reduction,” said Linda Morrell, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy. “Stolen registration plates are used to disguise a vehicle in order to commit crimes and are also used on unregistered vehicles to make it appear as if the vehicle is registered. Regularly check your vehicle to see that both plates are still in

place. If they have been stolen, report the theft promptly to local police.” “If your number plates were stolen they may be put onto another vehicle. Taking this simple step helps not only reduce the theft of number plates but also reduces the incidence of offences where false number plates are used,” Linda added. Sgt Scott said: “It was pleasing to see so many people take the time out of their day to have the screws fitted free of charge to their vehicles which shows that the message of being proactive about your own personal and property safety is getting through to the community and that it is not just the police who are responsible for keeping our communities safe but the entire community itself. “A huge thank you to Stan, Carol, Pauline and the troops of the local State Emergency Service who supplied the equipment and manpower for the event and also the local Cooroy Rotary Club for supplying helpers and conducting a sausage sizzle. The old saying that Australia runs on the backs of the volunteer is so very true.”

COOROY RAG

Cooroy inventor makes a difference LOCAL inventor Barry Sheridan, from Black Mountain, Cooroy has had a secret passion for many years. As a young man, he observed first hand the devastating effects a family faces when a loved one falls in their home and remains undiscovered. After arriving in Cooroy in 2005 Barry started to work on his idea. He wanted to find a solution to the problem of people falling in their home and remaining undiscovered for long periods of time. After setting up his company Seniors Wellbeing in 2010, Barry brought together a team of Brisbane engineers to help build the first prototypes. His instructions were simple, he wanted to build a device that could automatically detect if someone became unconscious, or had a fall in their home or garden. It had to be able to work with without a pendant, but it also needed to be able to work with a pendant, and it had to be able to telephone for help automatically, explain the problem clearly and ask for help. The device had to be really easy to use, simple to install and affordable. Out of this initiative, Fall Buddy was born. By the end of 2014 Barry had the factory in Brisbane build the first production run of

Fall Buddy’s and so far units have been installed in as far afield as Melbourne and Queensland. Local resident Val was one of our first Fall Buddy clients said Barry. She was constantly worried that her mother, Elsie, who was a healthy 93 years young lady, might have a fall in her home and not get the help she needed quickly. “Fall Buddy was a breath of fresh air” she said. “I can now go out and leave my mother at home on her own. I know that if she has a fall, her Fall Buddy will automatically telephone my mobile and tell me that Mum needs help now”. Val went on to say “I don’t feel guilty leaving Mum any more, because I know Fall Buddy is watching over her. It will even remind her when she needs to take her tablets during the day, we love our Fall Buddy”. In May 2015, following feedback, Seniors Wellbeing brought out a new version of Fall Buddy. Barry calls it Fall Buddy for Dementia. He said “We know that most people with dementia won’t remember to press a pendant if they fall, and this is where Fall Buddy can really help. We also wanted Fall Buddy to alert the family if their loved one walked out of the house and were in danger of getting lost.

Again it had to work without the client needing to wear any device to activate the alarm, and it also needed to allow family and friends to come and go from the house without going into alarm mode. With over 1 million people in Australians suffering falls each year, there is no doubt that a device such as Fall Buddy will be an essential part of home care management for every Australian who values their independence. 96kms: 10 hills ranging from 200m to 520m in elevation; ridiculous inclines and declines; and powering from 7am Saturday to Sunday morning throughout the night, with no sleep. But all those from NDSHS who signed up for the Kokoda Challenge last weekend did it, and did it with great tenacity! The NDSHS student and teacher teams all showcased great courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice - all qualities demonstrated by the 1942 ANZAC’s during the Kokoda Campaign in Papua New Guinea. The student team completed the trek in 22 hours and was placed 5th out of all the school teams, with Year 12 students Rheanna Fitzpatrick and Gabbie Hill the 2nd fastest girls in all school teams.

The teacher team completed the trek in 28 hours and powered on despite the blisters, sore knees, a jet-lagged Joyce Jackway (who had just flown back into Australia two days before the event!) and a nasty tumble taken by Bridgid Muir just after 2am, which left her with a badly bruised wrist and knee and a consequential quick visit to the paramedics on site. Duke of Edinburgh teacher and Kokoda Challenge team leader Dean McMaster bravely turned up to work on Monday, straight after the monster challenge in ugg boots and crutches. “The Kokoda Challenge seems to attract very happy, supportive, friendly, generous and companionable competitors,” said Brigid Muir. “I was overwhelmed with the kindness

THE mission is on to find the Library’s new NAO humanoid robot a name. Noosa Library Service has launched a competition to find the walking, talking, fully programmable robot, a new moniker. “It’s not every day that you get a chance to name a robot,” says Library Coordinator Tracey King. “At 58cm tall the humanoid robot is small, cute and he can be programmed to walk, catch small objects, talk, play games, read books and even dance. “NAO’s humanoid form and incredible interactivity make the robot really endearing and loveable. And we need a name that reflects all of these qualities,” says Ms King. It may seem like science fiction, but robots are on the rise. NAO has been used in more than 70 countries, in computer and science classes, from primary school through to university. Noosa will be the first

Below the belt A couple of weeks ago I was brought to my wobbly old knees, By some unfamiliar but savage disease. It struck my innards in a most spectacular mess, I was in dire trouble, I must confess. The wonderful ambos took me to Noosa Hospital where, I’d get the best of tender loving care. While they couldn’t identify the cause of my ailment, I was quite comfortable, and not an impatient patient. Even pregnancy, which I thoughtfully suggested, Was eliminated, after they assured me it had been tested. (I know that sounds a wee bit funny, But I hoped against hope, because I needed the money). My morale climbed up, my blood pressure was rising, With so many caring nurses, that’s not surprising, My pacemaker threatened to strip a few gears, But that always occurs when a pretty girl appears. After a few days came the welcome announcement, The Doctor delivered the awaited pronouncement. I appeared I’d been struck by the dreaded Salmonella, No wonder I was a pretty sick and sorry fella. The care at Noosa Hospital was certainly of the best, We are indeed lucky people, and no doubt we are blessed.

Action needed to spare tonnes of organic waste from landfill NOOSA is dumping more than 11,000 tonnes of organic waste in landfill annually, swallowing up space and producing 70% of Council’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a situation that can’t continue for space, financial and environmental reasons and Noosa’s first community jury could soon deliver a solution. “We’re currently burying 1900 truckloads of material annually that could instead be composted to reduce landfill, slash emissions and provide a useful resource,” Noosa Council waste manager Wayne Schafer says. “If you lined the 1900 trucks up bumper to bumper they’d stretch from Tewantin to Cooroy.” Each week almost half the contents of a typical household’s wheelie bin is compostable organic waste such as garden clippings and food scraps. “The 3300 residents who’ve taken up

the optional garden waste service are diverting around 1,600 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year. They should be applauded but we need to go further.” Some councils have implemented successful strategies, while others have made costly mistakes. The recommendations of Noosa’s inaugural community jury - a first for a Queensland council - will help Noosa develop the right solution, says Mayor Noel Playford. “The jury has spent five months examining the complex topic, consulting with experts in the field to determine how we best reduce the amount of organic waste we’re landfilling. “I am sure other councils too will be eager to read what our community jury has to say.” The community jury will deliver its recommendations later this month.

Call Council to check signage compliance COUNCIL is urging local business owners to check that their advertising signs comply with the rules. New Local Laws for advertising devices took effect from 1 July, with requirements for temporary signage such as A-frames and real estate signs. Planning and Environment Manager Kerri Coyle says the new Local Law aims to protect the visual amenity of Noosa’s roads and footpaths from excessive signage. “We’re asking all business owners to make sure they are familiar with the Local Law and comply with the requirements,” she said. For A-frame or sandwich board signs: A maximum of one sign per tenancy is permitted; The sign should be placed on the property it refers; The maximum size permitted is 900mm x 600mm or 0.54m2 of each side; One tear drop/kite sign may be displayed instead of using an A-frame sign. For real estate signs: Only one sign per property is permitted; The sign must be placed on the property that is for sale; The maximum size permitted is 2.16m2. The Local Law also limits the number and location of event directional type signage and also signage for open-for-inspection times, auctions and garage sales. “All other signage is controlled by The Noosa Plan,” Ms Coyle said. Business owners can contact Council for advice on what signs are permitted and whether their current signs are appropriate by calling (07) 5329 6245 or by visiting www.noosa.qld.gov.au/local-lawsoverview<http://www.noosa.qld.gov.au/local-lawsoverview> (see Subordinate Local Law No 1). Council officers will be calling into local businesses in coming months to provide information on Local Law requirements for advertising.

The World of Banking Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy In this column I want to explore the world of banking with you. I also want to share how the modern banking industry works and what it contributes to our communities and indeed, our economy. In my role as a manager of a Community Bank, I am seeing banking change and giving regional communities such as ours a real say in its own future. Currently, the most of us are aware the Australian banking sector is dominated by four major banks and the Australian government has a “four pillars” policy that prevents mergers between the four major banks. This is long-standing policy rather than formal regulation, but it reflects the broad political unpopularity of bank mergers. A number of leading commentators have argued that the “four pillars” policy is built upon economic fallacies and works against the nation’s better interests. Recently, Australia’s “big four” banks are in fact in the world’s top 12 banks, due to recent collapses of large banking corporations. Competitors to the ‘big four’ banks include smaller and often regional banks, as

well as building societies and mutual credit unions. I work for one of those, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, but on the same list are such banks as Suncorp, BOQ and ME Bank. The number of building societies in Australia sits at 10 and the number of credit unions is approximately 100, so the market choice is sizeable. Did you know that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recorded that over the 12 months ending December 2014, the finance and insurance industry contributed $150 billion to Australia’s $1.5 trillion economy? Banking and the various sectors that fall under banking such as building societies, credit unions, money market dealers, life insurance, superannuation funds, health and general insurance, truly is a major part of our Australian economy. At Bendigo Bank, the number of Community Bank branches has continued to increase each year (now more than 300 in total), with customers now committing more than $26.8 billion in banking business throughout

the Community Bank network. More importantly, more than $130 million in Community Bank branch profits has been returned to community projects and over $37 million has been paid in dividends to more than 73,000 local shareholders. I’m proud of the part the Cooroy Community Bank branch continues to play in this ongoing success story in our Australian communities. So get to know more about your bank and its role in our community. You may even be interested in becoming part of the banking industry and exploring possible employment opportunities. I’ll write more about this in my next article. If you have any questions about your banking, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff. edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Chatting afterwards over a steak sandwich fellow car enthusiast Kym said the 85 member strong group had chosen the girl guides after reading about their need for help in the local paper The Cooroy Rag. As well as the financial support the group also extended an invitation to the girls to take part in their annual Swap Meet on October 25th. “It will go towards repairing the Guide hut on Miva Street, which is in dire need of maintenance” says District Leader Bunyip AKA Della van der Heijden who adds that the girls are thrilled with the level of public sup-

Brigade fights fire with fire

IT doesn’t matter where you live in this beautiful district; your local Rural Fire Brigade provides an essential service to our community. Like the SES, the Rural Brigade is made up of volunteers; everyday people that give up their time to help their community and their help plays a vital role in keeping local people and their properties safe. So, what happens when a local Fire Brigade literally runs out of volunteers? Well, in short, they face closure. This is exactly the situation that the Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigade finds itself in but it is determined to fight to keep its doors open. Richard Small, Chairman, explains: “Like the rest of The Mary Valley, the communities of Ridgewood and Carter’s Ridge are slowly recovering from the fallout of the Traveston Dam Project.” This exodus of locals has seen a rapid decline in volunteers not just with the Brigade but across many services. “We are virtually rebuilding our community which means that we are having to rebuild the Brigade. We simply do not have enough active members to ensure we can service the area,” adds Small. To combat this, the Ridgewood RFB is having a volunteer drive. They are seeking members of the community aged 16 and over to join the service. John Sparrow, 1st Officer says: “To be an active member, all you will need to commit is the time to be

trained and to complete your Firefighter Minimum Skills (FMS). Sparrow goes on to say: “The training sessions will be flexible to suit our new members. We would hope to have all the basic training completed in two to three months. All we ask is that you keep up the training to ensure both your safety and the safety of the community in the occurrence of a fire.” It would seem that the Ridgewood RFB is serious about involving the community as a whole. An open day and car boot sale will be held at the brigade’s headquarters on Sunday 16th August from 9am to 1pm. “The whole idea,” says Small; “Is to showcase what it is we do, encourage new volunteers and basically let people have a bit of fun at the same time.” The day may be about fun but come fire season this is one Brigade that does not want to be caught out. “This is not the time to stand by and hope that others take up the call. If the Brigade has to close its doors, we all lose.” Small concludes: “Our job is to educate our new residents about the importance of the Brigade so that they want to be a part of it and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Open Day.” The Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigade is situated at the junction of Poulsen and Jubilee Roads in Carters Ridge and can be contacted via RidgewoodRFB.sec@gmail.com .

Colourful characters race in Cooroy IT is the people that always make a fete so much fun - and the Billy Cart Grand Prix held in Cooroy on Sunday July 19 was no exception. Noosa Christian College (NCC), hosted its twelfth annual event with racing for Pre-Preps right through to Open age categories. Mr Matt Forge from Forge Transport officially opened the event with Emcee Mr Richard Hansen. Many of the younger racers were dressed up in colourful outfits with funky hair to make their team standout from the rest. And, with plenty of cheering from the crowds, each racer did their best to get their team over the line. The NCC Teachers team had their pit-stop changeover down pat in an effort to get the edge over the younger competition. To close the day of racing, a fun one-lap race for several mixed teams was held with a couple of guests including Mr David Lafferty and Mr Karl Doss from Cooroy Bendigo Bank. But it wasn’t just the racing, locals also enjoyed amusement rides, live music, market stalls and other Fete attractions.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Many young people also entered the LEGO, cooking, art and photography competitions - with an impressive calibre of entries vying for prizes. NCC Parents and Friends President - Mrs De Johnstone was thrilled with the success of the day and the response from the wider community. ”I am so grateful to our school community for the effort they put in to make this annual event a fun day for the kids. With support from many parents, College staff and donations from local businesses, we are able to raise valuable funds for our P&F projects that benefit the students.” Noosa Christian College would like to publicly thank all the generous local business and private sponsors who contributed to the day - please visit the Billy Cart website www.noosabilly cart.com to view an interactive list of sponsors, and race results for the day. 1 JULY is the deal time to start putting your finances in order. It’s easy to put your finances on the back burner. After all, you’re doing all you can just keeping up with work and family commitments. But when you’re not organised, things can quickly get out of control and the harder it can get to tackle that pile of papers or emails. It can feel like you have a mountain to climb just to catch up with the previous tax year, let alone plan for the next one. So to avoid the last minute rush in 12 months’ time, start planning your finances now that the financial year has arrived. Planning makes perfect - The key is careful planning. • Get an overview of your finances. • Set your goals - Start by writing down your ‘big picture’ long-term financial goals, like: paying off your debt; saving for a house deposit, home improvements or even a holiday; protecting your family in case anything goes wrong; saving for a comfortable retirement. • Break it down - Set out the steps you need to reach your goals and what you’ll do differently this year. • Make it achievable - Be realistic or you could be setting yourself up for failure. Look at areas you can cut back without compromising your standard of living, like takeaway meals. • Make it automatic - Put in place regular transactions, like transferring money to a savings account as soon as your pay comes in. • Set a deadline - Set realistic timeframes and review your goals regularly as your situation will change over time.

Financial plan - To get you started, here’s a handy checklist. Get organised: Take control of your finances – File your bills and statements when they arrive. Go paperless where possible. Check your employer is paying super. Obtain an online login for your super account and check in each quarter. Consolidate your old super - You could be paying more than one set of fees. We can help you find and consolidate your super accounts. Do your Tax Return on time - Lodge your own return online, or speak to your accountant. And make next year easier by filing your tax receipts. Check your credit rating - Make sure you don’t have any financial skeletons in your cupboard that could prevent you from accessing financial products. Contact a Credit Reporting Body. Update your details. Don’t miss out on important updates. Ensure you update your address details when you move. Get on track! - Start a budget - Find out exactly where your money is going. Stop the leaks - Are you paying more than you need to for your health insurance, Internet or utility bills? Identify any areas where you might be leaking money and look for better deals. Cut back on daily expenses Small things can really add up. Going without your daily latte could save you over $1,000 a year. For a rainy day Set some money aside - Things don’t always go to plan. Whether its repair work on the car, new gutters or a hefty electricity bill, you sometimes need extra cash—fast. Set up an emergency fund

in case something unexpected happens. Make sure your beneficiaries are up to date. If something happens to you, it’s important your super and insurance benefits go to the right people. Check that you are fully insured. How would your family pay the bills, cover home loan repayments and put food on the table if something happened to you? Update your will. Ensure your will and estate plan are up to date. Get help - Make sure you use all the help at your disposal to achieve your goals. Crunch the numbers - Make smart choices about your finances Tell your friends and family - Making a public commitment can help you stick to your plan. The more people you tell about your plans, the more likely you are to achieve your goals. Learn the basics and get advice - Please contact us. And remember, don’t delay ... start putting your plan into place today! *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 are authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706. Orchids in the Garden AUGUST is the time most of the Australian native Orchids flower, so keep an eye out for these spectacular flowers in peoples gardens. Most of these orchids a very short-lived only lasting a week but are spectacular in full bloom. For long lasting flowering I recommend Vandas and there alliance such as Arandas and Mokaras. These flowers can last for 4months and more. The Vanda alliance is very easy to grow as they don’t need pots and can be tied on to a suitable host tree and with all the rain the Sunshine Coast receives the plants will thrive on their own. Orchids are one of the easiest plants to grow; if you choose the right ones they are water wise and can be left alone in the garden all year round. Why don’t we grow Cherries on the Sunshine Coast? We are too warm. It is the same for the Orchid world you grow plants that grow in our area and they will thrive with minimal care. It is a different matter when we grow them in pots they need regular repotting (approx. every 2 years) and regular feeding. To learn more about growing orchids as a

hobby the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society conducts a meeting at Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each Month starting at 1.00 pm. All visitors are welcome. The club is hosting an Orchid show in Cooroy on the 18th and 19th September at the RSL hall. There will be a wide variety of orchids on show and even more for sale. For more information contact John Green Ph 54832764 or visit the clubs website.

NDSHS band to play at Cooroy RSL Year 11 NDSHS band, The GoGetters will play at Club Cooroy RSL at 1pm on Sunday, August 16 as a part of their upcoming Sunshine Coast tour. Be sure to check them out! The RSL will be hosting new and emerging young local musicians throughout the afternoon and putting on a family friendly Sunday Roast for dinner.

AFTER many years of travelling Australia in various different guises, truck driver, coach captain and tourist, Clive Sandison felt that showing this beautiful land to other people was becoming a passion and sharing his experiences and learning something new every day was what he wanted to do. “So when building was no longer kind to my body I hung up the tool belt and went out on a limb aquired Roundabout Tours and developed it,” said Clive. “Kathy and I pride ourselves on providing a variety of tours, both local and further afield, to people of all ages and walks of life. The project began initially by offering day tours to the more senior members of our community, a fun way to see something new and meet new people without any hassles. We offer a door to door service where practicable, with all our extended tours and most of our day tours so all you need to do is get ready, pack a smile and a willingness to have fun, and we will do the rest. “We are now offering longer tours including our ‘Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers’ (September), ‘Springtime Gardens and Floriade’ (October) ‘Norfolk Island’ (February) and Christmas Tours every year. Last year we took a small group to New Zealand to enjoy the beautiful gardens there and this year in May and June we visited Dubai, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales – What a wonderful tour! Our Christmas tour is always a big hit with everyone who chose to spend this special day with some new friends. We publish a brochure outlining the events coming up every six months and this is available by joining our mailing list or on facebook.” Some highlights in the next few months include: Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September – Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers - We see every flower in Toowoomba worth looking at and more. Thursday 24 September to Saturday 3 October – Floriade in Canberra - Stopping at Dubbo, the Blue Mountains & Southern Highlands on the way south and Snowy Mountains, Maitland and Grafton on the way home spending 2 full days in

Canberra . Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November – Jacaranda Festival Grafton - Guided tour of Grafton and watch the Grand Float Procession. Wednesday 23 to Sunday 27 December – Christmas in Murwillumbah - A relaxing cooler Christmas for you in the New England Highlands. Wednesday 30 Dec to Saturday 2 January – New Year Getaway - Beaudesert, Kyogle, Casino and so much more. Saturday 30 January to Saturday 6 February – Norfolk Island experience - Fly Air New Zealand to Norfolk Island and enjoy a wonderful excitement filled holiday. “We are pleased to offer our charter service to all local groups. If there is somewhere you need to be and there is more of you than fits in a car, give us a call. It might be a sporting group to a tournament or a hen’s night out on the coast. Want to get the extended family together at the beach ... take the bus, everyone gets to relax and talk together all the way rather than being in many cars and then having to find drivers to get home. What about a wedding out of town, let us take the guests to the ceremony and then bring them all safely back for the reception. No hassles.” Start living the life, join the happy group on a Roundabout Tour. Contact Clive and Kathy Sandison, Roundabout Tours. COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

THE Central Region Road Safety week is to be held in August with an increased emphasis on the detection of offences linked to the Fatal Five causes of serious and fatal traffic accidents namely Drink/Drug Driving, Seatbelts, Inattention and distraction, Speeding and driving Fatigued. Each day during the road safety week police will be out in force to spread the road safety message through driver education initiatives

and enforcement strategies. By now most people would be aware of the huge emphasis that police place on road safety due to the high rates of fatal and serious traffic accidents occurring across the region and police make no apology for targeting unsafe drivers who place us all at risk by having a poor attitude to road safety. Recently Police conducted two Random Drug Testing days in Cooroy

with specialist police officers visiting from the State Drug Testing Unit and the Road Policing Command with a number of drivers returning positive samples for allegedly having unlawful drugs in their systems whilst driving. Six drivers are now awaiting saliva results from the Government Analyst pending Court Appearances and loss of license. Regular drug testing and Random Breath testing days are

again scheduled for Cooroy in the near future to further deter drivers from driving whilst impaired so be warned if you use unlawful drugs then do not drive a motor vehicle. Remember that any Information that may assist in the detection of crime and drugs can be passed on by phoning your local police station or by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800333000. Information

can be supplied anonymously and cash rewards offered if the information is verified and an arrest made. Quantities of methamphetamines more commonly known as ICE are also starting to be located around the area so police are very keen to stop the spread of this very dangerous and highly addictive drug so any information in regards the use and or supply of this drug would be very much appreciated.

Kindness Club excursion to Smarty Pants NEW friendships were made when The Kindness Club visited the children of Smarty Pants Early Learning Centre during the school holidays. The children of The Kindness Club showed their video ‘What is kindness?’ and spent time playing and talking to the younger children. The Kindness Club members encouraged, acknowledged and congratulated kind words and actions by the little ones during their time together. Smarty Pants provided The Kindness Club with a lovely morning tea and presented them with a beautiful drawing created by the children as a memento of their special morning. “Kindness is for all ages” said Ella-Jane, a long-time member of The Kindness Club.

As a sign of friendship, The Kindness Club left a small gift with each child. A small mouse, hand knitted by Marg Whitford of Cooroy. Marg knits toy mice for local Pathology Departments and a Cooroy Doctor’s Surgery. The mice act as a comfort and a distraction for children having procedures. Marg kindly donated her time to make the mice for The Kindness Club to give as gifts. Such a kind thing to do! The Kindness Club and Smarty Pants ELC look forward to spending more time together in the future and spreading the message of kindness. If you would like to contact The Kindness Club and share your stories of kindness, they would love to hear from you! Email: cooroy_oshc@bigpond.com

Let’s send Jess to Rio!

JESS Nielsen has been riding horses since she was five years old and 12 years later, she can’t imagine life any other way. In between graduating Year 12 Jess also works here at the Cooroy RSL while Studying a Certificate in Hospitality. 17 year-old Jess participated in her first riding competition in March and now has her sights firmly set on the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. “I’ve always loved horses,” Jess said. “I started riding through

www.cooroyrag.com.au

a school program and I just never stopped. “A lot of training went into the first competition and I loved it. I’m now planning for the next,” she said. “If I do well at a few more competitions, I would be in the running for the Paralympics in Rio and that’s definitely my goal.” “I can’t imagine a day where we didn’t talk about horses in one way or another,” joke Jess’s mum, Ann. The next competition is a qualifier on the Gold

Coast in October. Jess has cerebral palsy which affects movement in her legs, and uses a K Walker for mobility when she isn’t cantering with her four-legged best friend. “Sometimes I use a wheelchair too, because we go camping quite a lot and the larger distances can be a bit of a challenge,” Jess said. “I’ve had a lot of surgeries to make sure I can keep my mobility. I’ve had tendons in my legs stretched, as well as titanium rods and screws in my legs. “I have to stretch for about an hour a day too, to make sure I stay flexible for riding.” Working at the RSL is a challenge but Jess is enjoying learning new skills and meeting new people. The Cooroy RSL and our wonderful Drag Queens Melony Brests and Sal Monalla are putting on their next, already sold out Bingo Extravaganza in support of Jess’s Olympic Campaign, but donations will still be gratefully accepted at the reception of the Cooroy RSL Club.

Holly Hughes (left) with “Mysterious”, the painting that won her the 2015 Open Award, and Cr Rae Gate and Prue Sheehan from major sponsor Bendigo Bank Gympie. FORMER Kandanga student Holly Hughes took home the $1500 Bendigo Bank Open Award at the Mary Valley Art Festival. Titled “Mysterious”, the painting of a woman emerging from water impressed judges Ken Gailer and Pam Walpole with its good composition and well executed airbrush technique. Holly also won first place in the Animalia category with “Squidwood”, a painted surfboard that Mr Gailer described as highly original with well balanced composition. Holly took up airbrushing three years ago when she was working as a make-up artist, and now lives at the Gold Coast. Highly commended in the Open category was an intriguing tapestry titled “The seed the tree and the lady” by Imbil artist Ilona Demecs. The judges described it as a finely woven textile with meaningful content. The piece is also a finalist in the 2015 Kate

Derum Award for Small Tapestries, which is open to all professional Australian and International tapestry artists. The re-vamped Bush Haven Youth Awards attracted more than 40 entries, with Connor McBeath winning the $1050 Open. The Youth Awards will be presented from 1.30pm on Sunday at the Imbil Public Hall, followed by the popular festival closing event and the announcement of the Twin Bunya Park People’s Choice Award. The Mary Valley Art Festival marks its 15th year and is the major event for Mary Valley Artslink, which also presented a special committee award to an up and coming local artist – Crystal Aylmer. The $250 prize is a course at the Brisbane Institute of Art, which provides a nonprofit creative arts centre housing studios, workshops and galleries. The judges felt the exhibition of more than 270 paintings and artworks was excellent for a small show in a

pomona Miss Friby at the Majestic Theatre, Pomona STEP right up to the chopping block as two VERY sparkly showgirls vie for your adoration, or die trying! After sellout shows at Adelaide Fringe, Green Room Award nominee and Australia’s Got Talent finalist, Miss Friby, is bringing her hilarious dance cabaret to the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Saturday August 1st for one night only! Fresh from their Splendour in the Grass shows, Miss Friby creator, Elizabeth Dawson-smith, and New Zealand talent, Stephanie Marion Wood, promise to deliver a wild affair of song, dance and side splitting vaudeville. Realizing that their ‘one woman show’ is now a DOUBLE BILL, these divas are on a mission to prove there is only one lead role. Cue decadent costumes, hilarious banter, old world song and dance and an act that promises you will never look at chocolate the same way again. Featuring original music by Fingal Capaldi (Adelaide Fringe ‘Best Music’ recipient – ‘Rapskallion’), this show pays homage to old world theatre with its own unique take on the cabaret, burlesque and vaudeville genres. An apt choice for the company’s creator Dawsonsmith), who has an academic background in nineteenth century burlesque (non striptease) - punning verbal humour, gender caricature and satirical bite. This show promises an exciting nonstrip alternative to the current trends in burlesque revues. With their unique brand of entertainment, audiences are invited to join in the revelry that is ‘Miss Friby’. A fun and highly engaging cabaret company, whose new travelling show aims to bring out the competitive skallywag in all of us! Saturday August 1st, 2015. Doors Open 6:30pm / Show starts 8pm. Are you suffering from malnutrition? IF you are suffering from enzyme deficiency, there’s a good chance you are. It’s hard to believe someone who eats three full, healthy meals a day and takes a multivitamin every morning could be malnourished. But it’s more than possible, especially if your digestive system doesn’t get the enzymes it needs to fully do its job. Digestive enzymes take the foods we eat and break them down into the nutrients our bodies need to stay strong and healthy. Unfortunately, our bodies don’t always produce enough enzymes to digest food properly. Even if you eat properly, being careful to consume nutrientrich foods every day, it won’t do you much good if your body can’t make the best of those nutrients. Also, your body can’t digest food properly without enough enzymes. Not only can improperly digested food seep into the bloodstream and adversely affect on your immune system, it can also gather in the bowels and become toxic, which can result in many

ailments and diseases. What are the Symptoms? It’s hard to count just how many health problems and symptoms can be caused by a deficiency of digestive enzymes. Some of the possible symptoms include: Bloating; Constipation; Diarrhoea; Dull skin; Fatigue; Hair loss; Hair thinning; Headaches; Indigestion; Insomnia;Joint pain; Mood swings; Rashes; Weak nails; Weight gain. Also, if you find yourself craving certain foods, this can be a sign that you are suffering from digestive enzyme deficiencies. Food cravings are often your body’s way of telling you that you aren’t getting enough of something it needs. If any of the above symptoms sound familiar, help is at hand from Naturopath, Maria at Make A Difference Health & Fitness. Eumundi Rotarians in Kokoda Challenge Three Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Eumundi and the son of one of the Rotarians competed in the 2015 Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast over the weekend 18/10 July. Permanent hair romoval LAKERIDGE Health and Beauty is excited to introduce the only permanent hair removal system in Cooroy. So what is IPL? Intense Pulse Light, is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic uses including hair removal, photo rejuvenation, and treatment of dermatologic diseases. With hair removal the energy or heat source is targeted to the hair bulb, which is then destroyed preventing future growth from the effected bulb. And with the latest technology available various hair colours and hair consistency can be treated. IPL, the same as laser or any skin resurfacing procedures, damages the skin with the end goal of promoting new, younger, healthier skin growth. IPL therapy is considered a non-ablative resurfacing technique, which means that it targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). The results are not as dramatic as ablative resurfacing where both the dermis and epidermis are injured. The advantage of IPL therapy is its minimal downtime – a patient can often have the procedure done in their lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards.

The IPL System used at Lakeridge is advanced, fast (one underarm can be completed in around 5 minutes) and created by doctors. This system is suitable for all skin types and most clients will feel no pain. What can be treated? – Hair removal; Photo rejuvenation; Vascular lesions; Wrinkles; Acne and hormonal breakouts. Safety. To use the equipment operators must hold a safety certificate. These certificates are monitored and regulated by Radiation Health Unit via Queensland Health. All staff at Lakeridge hold a safety certificate. Those of you who have experienced the Lakeridge treatment before know the high quality coupled with competitive pricing on offer, you can call for further pricing information. To ensure the highest of quality, safety and outcome all treatments require a 15 minute pre treatment consult. This will include patch testing of your skin. Within this consult the therapist will discuss an individualised treatment plan and price. Lakeridge Health and Beauty continue to be at the forefront of providing health and beauty services in Cooroy, and now we can boast the only IPL machine in Cooroy and one of the most advanced machines on the entire Sunshine Coast.

COOROY RAG Happy Birthday Eirene

ON Sunday 28th June, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France bringing Australia’s involvement in WW 1 to an end. On this same date, Eirene Treichel, nee Bainbrigge, came into this world in Brisbane, Australia. Her mother, recognizing the importance of this date, wanted to name her “Peace”. Fortunately, her mother settled on the Greek version of the word which was Irene. A simple spelling error in public records somewhere down the track saw the addition of the E which gives this special lady the unique name of Eirene. Eirene was a tiny baby, less than 3 lb, and was not given a great chance of survival. As she progressed, her mother made the comment that she doubted Eirene would ever “make old bones “. How wrong she was. She has not only “made old bones”, Eirene had six children, one of whom has sadly passed. Her much loved Down Syndrome daughter, Mavis Anne, passed at the age of 54 in 2006. Eirene also has 18 grandchildren and, at last count, 18 great-grandchildren. Eirene celebrated her birthday with family and friends at her son, Greg’s home at Cooroy. Born and raised in Brisbane, she recalled how, in 1931 at the tender age of 12, she won a QSPC ( Qld Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Special Book Prize. It was awarded for her entry in an essay competition. Eirene’s entry was “The Most Useful Animal to Mankind” which she considered was the cow. Fortuitously, some years later she met and married her lifetime partner, Henry Treichel, who was a dairy farmer. She spent the next 70 years at their farm at Kin Kin. Henry sadly passed in 2000. Such a unique person, Eirene has always demonstrated her unconditional affection for her family and friends. A conversation with Eirene reveals her understanding of world politics , current events and a strong compassion for those less fortunate. Truly outstanding qualities from an outstanding person.

SATURDAY, 18.7.15, early morning: it may have been cold outside – but the heat was on inside our brilliant venue, at the Pomona State School hall! A fierce yet friendly battle raged between the Pomona Table Tennis Group and our guests from Gympie. Four teams of three players each, exchanged topspins, chops and tricky serves to gain the advantage over their opponents. With new barriers in place, four courts were created which delivered 9 singles games and 3 doubles games to decide the winner of the day. All four Pomona teams succeeded in their challenge, raking up a 35 to 13 games win – also win-

ning an invitation to travel to Gympie for the opportunity of an ongoing exchange of banter with the Gympie Table Tennis Group. A big ‘thank you’ to all volunteers for this most enjoyable event, especially our canteen ladies that provided nourishment and piping hot beverages. Regardless of the weather: table tennis is a sport for all ages and activity levels, keen-agers (seniors) mixing it happily with teens and younger. Please join us at the school hall, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, from 5 PM to 8 PM – hoping to attract more female players for the Friday session. Please contact Bernhard: 5485 0888.

COOROY RAG

Keeping in Touch Over the school holidays Noosa Touch was proudly represented at the Junior State Cup in Hervey Bay by over 90 of our up and coming male and female juniors competing across age divisions from U10 right through to U18. This annual event attracts over 2000 players in 210 teams from around the state. During the three days, despite enduring ever changing weather conditions - rain, sunshine and then dropping temperatures,

our players showed skill, determination, outstanding sportsmanship and Noosa’s never give up attitude. All of our teams performed admirably and produced some great results. A couple of our standout performances were the U10 girls who narrowly missed a semi final appearance after putting in an awesome team effort against Brisbane with only two touchdowns separating the teams at the final

whistle. The U18 boys went the whole way making it to the big one, defeating local rivals Gympie in the Grand Final. This game, with the score deadlocked at full time, was decided with an extra time drop off. Just to add to the thrilling ending both teams managed to score within their opening sets before the Noosa boys were triumphant scoring a run away touchdown to take the trophy. A huge thank you to all

of our players, referees, tour manager extraordinaire Mandy, coaches, managers and parents who make up the Noosa Touch family. Your continued support and help is appreciated and enables the pure enjoyment which was evident by the smiling faces during the entire carnival. Our club would like to make mention of the Eumundi Youth

Sporting Club and Joe’s Waterhole for their continued financial support. We also need to acknowledge the Hervey Bay RSL who came to our aid by supplying replacement tents for the carnival after a mishap involving a freak wind and our team tents. Please check our website and Facebook page for our sign on dates for our new season.
