Fundraiser for underprivileged kids - challenge accepted! ON the weekend of 19 July a team of students from Noosa District high School competed in the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge, a fund raising event for underprivileged kids. “The team prepared for six months prior to the event and were anxious and excited about competing,” said teacher, trainer, mentor and motivator, Dean McMaster. The Challenge was done under the Duke of Edinburgh scheme which Dean co-ordinates at the school. The course consisted of 96km of very hilly terrain and a cut of time of 39 hours with all competitors required to complete the whole race together. Due to a bush fire in the first section of the course the course was changed at the last minute. Mr McMaster, who also competed in the challenge said, “If possible this made the course tougher as teams repeated the last more vertical half of the course twice and it also extended the course to over 100 km”. Jai Pouzet, Gabbie Hill, Brayden Fell and Beau Graham made up the competitors in the Noosa High team. The gun went off at 8.30am on Saturday and Team Noosa set a good pace early reaching the first check point and support crew some three hours and 18km later. “The support crew were an integral and important part of the team and their encouragement and resupply capabilities made it much easier for the racers,” said Mr McMaster. “Teacher aid Daren Styles was excellent and remained up beat and positive throughout the event. Students Megan Staples and Robin Bishop also made up part of the support crew and they stayed alert and supportive all night. “The course was exceptionally rough and hilly and took its toll on many with high withdrawal rates. Noosa’s kerbside clean-up a huge success A REPORT on Noosa’s recent kerbside bulk waste collection shows the popular service was a huge success, but there are lessons to be learned about how it might be done better next time. Among the issues to be tackled in the future are those of people dumping mattresses, tyres and other prohibited material on the kerbside, people dumping useful items like working white goods instead of delivering them to notfor-profit groups, and residents from the neighbouring Sunshine Coast Council area dumping their unwanted goods on Noosa streets. The report by Noosa Council’s Waste Coordinator - Doug Barnes - says 9,723 properties took part in the clean-up, that’s two out of every five properties in the Noosa Shire. Ten trucks and forklifts were involved, operated by 19 Cleanaway staff

who collected 1500 tonnes of material, nearly three times as much as the last collection in 2009. 315 tonnes of that was metal sold to recyclers for $59,000, money returned to the Council and contractor. The kerbside bulk rubbish collection became a rallying cry for Free Noosa supporters, an example of what had been lost when our Council was amalgamated. Now the service is back, apparently to stay, but with some issues to ponder for the future. Many people ignored warnings about dumping prohibited material such as asbestos, batteries, tyres and mattresses, and the culprits often left them in front of other people’s homes. Is the naughty corner effective enough? Is the sorry saga of this under fire Budget, ever going to end? There seems no limit to the extremes to which this Parliament will descend. Was the interference by so many different people really and truly required? The behaviour in both Houses, offered nothing to be admired. Mr Palmer seemingly is simply having fun, Keeping the so-called major parties, politically on the run. No one is prepared, apparently, to take the gentleman on, The antics, unhappily, are an irritant to everyone. The pollies are so pre-occupied, with keeping pace with the polls, And ensuring they regularly appear before those folk on the electoral rolls. Self-interest is paramount, they treasure those very comfortable seats, Allowing them to enjoy, those lovely perquisite sweets. Meanwhile the patient citizens, suffer treatment with contempt, Any progress for our wonderful country, one can detect no serious attempt. They are determined to keep Australia, a comfortable Welfare State, The price of trying to fix the many problems, is politically too great. We are still a lucky country, but bedevilled by second class politics, Dictated to by the whims of mischievous Clever Dicks. I suggest if the Speaker were equipped with a schoolmaster’s cane, Some corporal punishment, would restore some Parliamentary discipline again, Six of the best must surely impress the most unruly performer, And be much more effective than time spent in the Naughty Corner!!! news Students compete in Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge

COOROY RAG Continued from Page 1 Gabbie Hill struggled in the first 20 km and I had serious doubts about her ability to finish. Her absolute refusal to give in and stubborn determination saw her gradually improve and strengthen throughout the course. At various stages we all had doubts about our abilities to continue. The difficult aspect of this years course was the fact that teams had to walk 51 km to a turn around point and then return. This proved mentally challenging as the team, already exhausted, realised they had to return and do it all again. By check point 3 the 60km mark the whole team were down, negative and making noises about pulling out. Beau had already withdrawn due to a badly injured and swollen knee. It would have been an easy option for the rest to withdraw but after some motivational words and support the team decided to continue on. The next 40 km was a blur, the time between 1am and 4am was the most difficult with the body trying to sleep yet

needing to press on. The temp in the hills was below zero and competitors were all starting to fray at the edges. 4.00 am saw the team leave the last check point for the final 18km to the finish. I’m sure all the racers would agree this was the hardest and longest 18km of the course. The team crossed the finish in 25 hours and 17 minutes, the 9th school team of about 70 starters and 83 overall of about 700 starters. Over half the teams pulled out of this years race. The results speak volumes for the personal courage and endurance of these kids. Not one angry word was spoken not one dummy spit. The support crew were awesome and mate ship palpable. I was proud to be a part of the training and participation in the event. Thanks must go to Bendigo Bank and Daddows of Cooroy both major sponsors and Noosa Van Lines as minor sponsors. Without their support we would not have been able to purchase decent torches, hydration packs and other required safety gear. The kids did you

Council clean up a success Continued from Page 1 There were complaints about the seven weeks it took to conduct the entire clean-up, but this was explained by the huge amount of waste that residents had been waiting to get rid of. In his report, Mr Barnes suggests contractors could prioritise high profile roads next time, so fewer tourists see the piles of kerbside junk. The Salvation Army and Brite Side Industries also reported a big drop in useful items for resale through the period, apparently because many people thought it easier to leave things in front of their homes rather than have them delivered to not-for-profit organisations. Mr Barnes also recommended that electronic waste should be collected by a separate truck so it can be protected for recycling,

and that green waste should be excluded from the free service because it becomes contaminated. Instead, people should be encouraged to use the green waste bins all year round. How Noosa can do better: • Residents can arrange to deliver useful, working items to the Salvation Army, Brite Side Industries and other not-for-profit groups year-round, rather than dump them. • Noosa needs to recycle its green waste every fortnight in household, green bins, rather than store it for the kerbside bulk collection. • The program can prioritise high profile roads to minimise the eyesore for tourists. • Electronic waste could be collected separately so it can be recycled.

IF you spend time walking our local forests, exploring our local ocean shores, or scaling our local mountains, chances are you may encounter a group of engaged, exploratory and enlivened children out there! These are Natureweavers - small groups of children who, alongside their guides, immerse themselves in wildspaces throughout the Sunshine Coast, connecting to their local landscape and learning through play. Carly Garner is the founder and director of Natureweavers, a forest school program operating locally since 2010. With her business partner, Fiona Ball, Carly designs and delivers programs for children and families in various wildspaces throughout the Sunshine Coast. “We really see ourselves as earth mentors, guiding children and families to connect with their natural environment, fostering the health and general wellbeing of children and families but also inspiring earth stewardship behaviour in children and their parents. For if

you don’t love something, you won’t protect it.” Forest Schools are an educational approach and a program of delivery that have existed since the late 1950s with thousands of programs the world over, starting in Scandinavia and then into Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. Whilst there are variations, Forest Schools are defined by their regular and repeated access to the same natural space, and their emergent, experiential, inquiry-based, playbased and place-based learning. In the face of the everincreasing indoorification of education, and childhood activity in general, Natureweavers Forest School is an innovative and popular program. “We have children from as young as 2 years old strapping on a backpack and boots, and heading into the bush” says Carly. “We are regularly seeing positive learning outcomes in our ‘outdoor classrooms’ - learning outcomes based on realtime explorations and ex-

periences rather than pre-determined concepts in books or on screens” Natureweavers has been running programs for older children since 2010, but has recently commenced a weekly early childhood program, based in Black Mountain. “This is a kindergarten program specifically for children aged 2 to 5 years. We gather and play on a specifically selected 3 acre property - a balance of grassy backyard, deep forest and a peaceful dam, with a huge fig tree that is just the right height for climbing!” Bordered by the Yurol National Park, this property is an ideal base from which “our youngest natureweavers can explore local wildspace”, says Carly. “Working the same site over time, these children will come to know their local land deeply, developing connections, experiential understanding and bush skills as well as experiencing the simple freedom of unstructured, extended periods of time playing in nature” To Carly, that is one of the most fundamental ben-

too often our children are caught up in.” The program is proving popular for local children and families who are looking for a local alternative to traditional kindergarten or child care programs. “Parents tell me if I can deliver their children back to them at the end of the day tired, dirty, hungry and happy, then I have done my job” Carly says. “So far, so good!”

Local designer upcycles for charity auction COOROY resident, Simone Barter, is one of eight designers involved in the Feast Watson Re-Love Project: a collaborative campaign featuring the upcycling journey of unwanted pieces of furniture, through the talents of Australian design personalities. The Re-Love Project concept was launched last year to show Australians how easy it is to provide a new lease on life to old furniture with Feast Watson products and a little TLC. While upcycling continues to lead as one of the more popular craft trends, it seems it hasn’t quite extended to medium and large furniture pieces, with people still inclined to throw them away rather than considering their potential. As an interiors and props stylist and a design blogger with her own successful blog, style.life.home, Simone knows only too well the benefits of upcycling and that with a little creativity, a lot can be achieved. Utilising her natural creative flair, Simone loves new and pre- loved furniture that she can put her own stamp on. Since May, Simone has been busily transforming a desk and chair, which will be auctioned on eBay, allowing members of the public to bid on a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to Salvos Stores Australia. Handpicked by Feast Watson to participate in the campaign,

Simone said watching her concept along with her desk and chair transform has been incredibly exciting. “My inspiration this year was to find a desk and chair that could be created for a home office/study. Plus I wanted to use current colours and trends for anyone to add into a space that was a little bit of a ‘wow’ in the room,” Simone said. Feast Watson’s Brand Manager, James Fisher, says the talent displayed in the Re-Love Project has been outstanding and feeds into one of the most popular current trends. “Our eight designers have blown us away. They have each done an incredible job in creating something truly special. Wood and timber accents are a hot trend at the moment, so it’s been exciting to see eight different timber pieces be transformed over the course of the campaign. The end result is a collection of amazing design driven pieces,” James said. “We hope the public get behind the auction and are also inspired to undertake upcycling projects of their own,” James added. To bid on your favourite item, until Sunday 3 August visit Feast Watson’s eBay site: http://myworld.ebay.com.au/ feastwatsonre-loveproject

Although Carisma is marketed as ‘Low GI’ there is virtually no difference from a GI point of view. Low GI is up to and including 55, Medium GI is 56 - 69, High GI is 70 and above. ZIP tied helmets are all the rage again as the magpie breeding season returns. From now through to early December, male magpies become overprotective parents and may swoop passing pedestrians, cyclists and the occasional unlucky postie. A magpie swoop zone extends only about 100m from their nest tree, although this area can extend for cyclists. Unlike our teenage children, magpies left the nest about six weeks after hatching and it’s during this period their parents were most protective. There are some simple steps to avoid being swooped by a magpie including avoiding known magpie areas, wearing hats and helmets, using an umbrella, dismounting bikes and maintaining eye contact with the bird. If you are being swooped by a particularly aggressive magpie at home or on private property, private contractors can be contacted for assistance. Council officers are not authorised to capture or relocate overly-aggressive magpies. Complaints regarding swooping birds on council land will be assessed and a decision made regarding monitoring the site, erecting signs to warn pedestrians or engaging a licensed private wildlife contractor. Inquiries regarding magpies or reports of swooping magpies on private land should be referred to the Department of Environment and Resource Management.

Accounts Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy Every business has a transactional bank account, but have you got the right one? 1. Do you have specific legislative requirements to consider? This relates to your business and financial structure. For example, Real-Estate Agents and Solicitors are required to have trust accounts to handle deposits on property sales and so forth. Not-for-profit or volunteer organisations may also have particularly requirements in relation to their financial management and bank accounts. 2. How do your staff and suppliers want to be paid? Increasingly, staff and suppliers want to be paid directly into their bank accounts. If this is the case for you, you may need to ensure that your main transaction account includes this facility. In some industries, cash is still king. 3. How do your customers pay you?

This varies enormously across industries. For some retailers it will be primarily a mix of cash, EFTPOS and credit cards. For business-to-business suppliers it might be primarily direct debit and cheques. 4. Do you need to link to other accounts? In this day and age many businesses have multiple accounts, investment accounts, loan accounts, credit cards, partner accounts and so forth. In the case of an owneroperator it may also include personal accounts, home-loan and so forth. 5. Do you require multiple signatures/ approval? This is a very important issue if your business has multiple owners or if staff have been delegated a certain amount of authority over the accounting and banking function. 6. What are your reporting requirements? For some businesses the monthly statement

in the mail is enough. For other businesses day by day transactional details are required, along with an instant balance. 7. Talk to your Branch Manager There is always more than one way to set up your banking. If you know what it is you want from us, then we are confident that we have the range of banking products and options to meet your requirements. To talk more about your accounts or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5440 5289. You can also email me at wayne.hoens@bendigoadelaide. com.au.

Noosa Council has a variety of ways people can pay their rates: • BPAY • Online at www.noosa.qld.gov.au • Credit card by phone • At any Australia Post office • In person at the Level 2 counter, at the Pelican Street, Tewantin office • By direct debit, either via a total deduction on the rates due date or regular periodic deductions. If you have not already made arrangements to pay by direct debit an application form is available from our website – www.noosa.qld.gov.au. If ratepayers have not received their rates notice by 25 July then please contact Council on 5329 6500. Note: Noosa Council has moved quickly to correct an error in rates notices sent out to some ratepayers. People living in units have been sent a larger-than-expected bill for their regular waste collection service, an increase of $27 for six-months. Mayor Noel Playford said the increase was not in line with what the Council had announced for households, which was a rise of $9 each half-year for kerbside pick-up of waste and recycling bins. Mr Playford said “the larger increase for units was not at the rate we announced in our budget, so the error will be rectified with a credit in the next rates bill.” The mayor said honesty and transparency are at the heart of how Noosa Council operates. “In this case”- he said - “we’ve billed people living in units more than we should have, so we’ll sort this out quickly with a credit.” Mr Playford said he apologised to ratepayers for the error. “I hope people will see this for what it is” the mayor said “an inadvertent error that we’ve fixed quickly. We are determined to deliver exactly what we promise to ratepayers.”

Seqwater partners with Landcare to improve water quality SEQWATER has teamed up with the Noosa and District Landcare Group to improve catchment resilience in a continued effort to achieve a sustainable water supply for the growing region’s future. Seqwater this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the group to partner on initiatives to improve raw water quality outcomes in the Upper Mary, Six Mile, Yabba and Obi Obi catchment areas. Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said the alliance would assist both organisations to deliver their goals of maintaining the health of the region’s catchments for long-term water security. “Noosa and District Landcare Group is an existing Seqwater contractor for catchment services in the Sunshine Coast region. By extending our relationship to include greater catchment programs, we can deliver a shared program for whole-of-catchment health,”

Mr Dennis said. “The three year MoU will formalise our partnership to identify opportunities on which we can work collaboratively to ensure our catchments are managed effectively and efficiently. “Together we plan to explore and deliver works which aim to enhance catchments in the Upper Mary, Six Mile, Yabba and Obi Obi as small scale preventative measures across the catchment provide increased protection of raw water quality. This is a wellrecognised technique for reducing the need for treatment costs of the drinking water supply.” “Seqwater is committed to working with the Noosa District and Landcare Group, as well as other community groups and associations, to enhance and develop the planning, management and monitoring of water improvements to ensure the region’s resources are sustainable now and into the future.”

‘MAHONEY Place’, the latest development of local builders, Trevor & Averil Wilcox, was officially opened on Saturday July 12. The building in Garnet St Cooroy has been named in honour of the family who built the original house on the site in 1919. The Mahoney’s were also the first owners of the cordial factory in Cooroy. Many Mahoney family descendants attended the opening which was officiated by Allan Mahoney. Recognition was also given on the day to the 60 odd local subcontractors and suppliers who were part of the building process. Many of these, such as Max Watterson and Butch Rolfe have worked on Wilcox Building projects since the early 90’s when they built the first childcare centres in Cooroy. Trevor thanked the Garnet St neighbours, especially Jacqui & Peter Zipf, for their inexhaustible patience. Thanks also went to Bendigo Bank who stepped in at a crucial stage in the building when the ANZ let Trevor & Averil down. The many guests on the day enjoyed the excellent food supplied by ‘High Tea-Licious’ and the Cooroy RSL. ‘Mahoney Place’ is now occupied by Bec & Craig Steele of ‘Hinteractive Physio’, offering pilates and physio as well as associated services, and Solicitor, Anita Harris. With undercover parking accessible from Wimmer’s Lane, the latest edition to Cooroy’s CBD, is definitely worth a look.

THE holidays ended a day early for Monsieur Rugins and 26 students from Cooroy State School who headed to South Bank on Sunday 13 July to be part of the Brisbane

French Festival. The students were invited to perform due to the high standard of their French language and performance skills. Along with their support team of

parents and staff they were up early and headed to Brisbane to perform Les Trois Petits Cochons and Comment y aller? Under the Big Wheel at Southbank. Their

performance was very well received. Principal Des Deighton said he was proud of the energy and enthusiasm the students show towards their language lessons and the response they receive when they do perform. “It was great to hear the MC of the event say that our students “did the Sunshine Coast proud!”, said Mr Deighton. Mr Deighton said the learning of a second language not only teaches the children

about the language, the skills they learn are also transferrable to other subjects. You will have a chance to see the students perform in Cooroy on other occasions this term.

AUSTRALIANS love property but the idea of property investment— and where to start—can be daunting. One way to get started sooner is by unlocking the value in your home to invest. But it pays to understand the risks as well as the benefits. Using your home to invest Many Australians are releasing some of the value in their own homes to buy an investment property. And when you consider the potential tax advantages, it could make financial sense to buy a second property while paying off your home loan. When you own an investment property, you can often claim a tax deduction for the interest you’ve paid on your loan and many other expenses related to the property. It’s a matter of weighing up what’s most important. For some people, clearing the home loan is the number one goal. Others prefer to take on extra financial responsibility with a view to buying an investment property that may: 1. Increase in value over time (providing capital growth) and 2. Provide an extra source of income down the track. If you have to save-up first, it could be years before you can buy an investment property. And during that time, property prices may increase, making it harder for you to get a foothold. On the other hand, if your home loan is out of control already, your first priority might be to get on top of your existing debt. How can I release the value in my home and what are the risks? At any given time the

amount of equity in your home can change depending on:1. The value of the property and2. The amount owing on your home loan. How much equity do I have? You can work out how much equity you have by deducting the amount owing on your home loan from the current value of your home. Say your home is worth $500,000 and you owe $200,000 on your loan, you have $300,000 in equity. You can release some of the $300,000 by borrowing a proportion of it and using it to invest. Before you consider this type of strategy, it’s important to understand the risks. Say interest rates rise more quickly than you’d expected if you’re unable to cover the increase in loan repayments, you may not only lose your investment property but put at risk the home you released the equity from. So it pays to explore the possibilities before putting all you’ve worked for at risk. How much will an investment property cost? Make sure you consider the upfront costs before deciding whether or not an investment property is a good choice for you. Here are some of the main costs to consider: 1. The purchase price what you’ll pay for the property. 2. Stamp duty -based on which state you live in. 3. Legal and conveyancing fees - conveyancing is the process of transferring the property from a seller to a buyer. You would generally engage a solicitor or specialist conveyancer and fees can vary; expect to pay between approxi-

mately $700 and $2,500 or more in some cases. 4. Home loan application fees - these vary by lender. 5. Any fees charged by your lender to recover its cost of taking out lender’s mortgage insurance in respect of your loan there may be none at all depending on the lender and/or the amount you borrow relative to the property’s value. 6. Building, pest and strata inspection reports - these can really add up but may help you understand what you’d be buying. 7. Any upfront costs you’ll need to incur to make the property ready for the rental market. For example, the costs of renovating a kitchen or bathroom. And make sure you look into the ongoing costs like interest charges on the money you borrow, strata fees, council rates, utilities charges payable by the owner and rental insurance to protect you from rental default or property damage from your tenants. There’s a lot to consider. Should I buy an investment property? So should you buy an investment property? It really depends on you, your situation, your financial goals and attitude to risk which is why getting the right advice is always a good place to start. Like any property, you should also be careful about what and where you buy. Spend as much time as you can researching, and make sure there are no structural issues with your property. Speak with us today on 07 5447 7740 before deciding whether or not to consider unlocking the value in your home.

Letter to the editor A VISIT FROM THE GUMNUTS: The Gumnut Caravan Club’s ‘Christmas in July’ rally was a visit to the delightful township of Kenilworth, staying in the grassy Showground. Members thanks go to the local community who helped make the visit a most enjoyable experience. A mention should also be made of the Showground’s Caretakers (Clem) who contributed to the success of the rally by ensuring facilities and grounds were maintained at a level as good as any similar site around the State. As always, the ladies of our group enjoyed the local shopping and many an hour was spent looking for bargains. Our Club is one of the oldest of its type in Queensland having recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and is proud of the fact that members try, whenever and wherever possible to support local businesses. In just the few days in Kenilworth a total of $2,220.00 was spent in local shops and with service providers. Not a bad effort when you consider that the Gumnut Caravan Club is also one of the smallest caravan clubs in the CCCQ. Our membership is capped at sixteen vans and our philosophy has always been based on friendship and companionship with few rules but plenty of good times. The Gumnut’s also have one vacancy now that long term members (Alan and Desley) have become our first Honorary members. Anyone interested should contact our Secretary for more information (gumnutcaravanclub@gmail.com). Just for your interest most Caravan Clubs in our State belong and respond to a governing body registered as the Combined Caravan Clubs of Queensland Association. A total of the member Club’s expenditure during monthly rallies at various locations for last year was $568,000. That’s a lot of spending from only 24 clubs. So, whenever you see the Gumnut’s (or our sister Club’s) caravans in your area please continue to give us a wave or stop and say “G’day”. We don’t need more of an excuse than that to put the kettle on. We’ll be back next year ! President: John Stein

“SLEEPY little Cooroy. Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Cooroy.” I’d like a dollar for every time I’ve heard that comment made by an uninformed member of the public. Due to the good work of local Cooroy Police and then expert follow up investigations from the Noosa CIB and Maroochydore Police Intelligence section an international killer was brought to justice after being arrested in Tewantin and charged with numerous offences including offences committed upon five Cooroy businesses. These offences were very sophisticated in nature and involved a well-organised credit card skimming operation. Simon Dominic Hennessey had his day in court recently when he pleaded guilty to 13 counts of fraud related offences which netted him profits of more than $140 000. The investigation was a

complex one as Hennessey used fake ID’s to commit his offences and to exit and re-enter the country to hide his activities. Hennessey’s Modus Operandi was to target small communities seemingly selected at random obviously thinking that the smaller communities were less proactive with their security and less suspicious of these types of offences. For some reason he selected Cooroy which, in my opinion was the beginning of his demise as it was only after targeting the Cooroy businesses that his criminal enterprise began to unravel. A covert operation was commenced which culminated in Hennessey being arrested when re-entering the country and leading police to a house in Tewantin which was full of evidence used to convict him. Noosa CIB officers uncovered more than they bargained for when investigating the true identity of the person in there custody when they eventually determined his true identity to be a convicted killer who had been on the run from a UK Prison since 1998 after being convicted of the brutal murder of his Great Aunt when he stabbed her 70 times. After serving his prison time in Queensland it is expected that he will be extradited to the UK to serve out his remaining time in prison. This matter goes to highlight how we can all make a difference with assisting police to keep us safe by not being complacent in regards your personal safety. The Cooroy community deserves great credit for being such a proactive community, which makes my job as the Officer in Charge of the Cooroy Police that little bit easier. Cooroy Police have been called to several serious injury traffic accidents in the recent past which have occurred on Lawnville road, Cooroy which is a hinterland road connecting Cooroy Belli Creek road with Black Mountain road as well as being an access road for people residing west of the Bruce Hwy. Lawnville road is obviously a winding narrow road with some sections having large embankments and overhanging trees and shrubs shading the road resulting in the road

surface being wet from overnight dew to sometimes well after mid-morning. Several of the recent accidents have been caused when cars have left the road when attempting to steer around tight bends with the only explanation in the majority of these accidents being that the car was being driven too fast for the prevailing road conditions. Please slow down when driving on this road as there have been several accidents that could have resulted in death if not for good grace. Police patrols of this road have also been increased so beware or face a hefty fine. Drivers need to also set reminders on their smart phones or email systems or for the older generation circle your calendars to remind yourselves when your car registration becomes due. This is especially important now as the car registration labelling system is being phased out in the near future so no longer will a label be issued and adhered to the windscreen as a reminder of when your registration becomes due. You must pay on or before the due date for two reasons. The first being that to drive a unregistered car and to be involved in an accident cancels out all of your personal and third party insurance resulting in huge issues when being sued for property damage and injury. The second reason is that with increased technology police automatic recognition cameras are now able to automatically read number plates and flash up a message to police that a car is out of rego so don’t risk a huge fine by being complacent on the payment of your registration. And lastly, I’ve been approached by several motorist complaining of cars leaving the driveway of the BP Cooroy in Elm street and entering back onto the road failing to give way to traffic coming out off and entering into Cedar Street which is the street that Eagle Boys Pizza is in. All cars leaving a driveway are required to give way to all cars on the road and it appears that people who are leaving the BP Service Station after refuelling are not giving way to cars on the road as required so please remember this very basic of road rule. Wayne Patston is Manager of one of the town’s biggest sporting attractions, the 18 hole Cooroy Golf course, known in the region as the ‘friendly’ golf club. “We have over 420 members, with people aged anywhere between 12 and 95 years of age,” Mr Patston said. “The club’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere ensures we always get strong support from locals and the broader region. “Our Club Patron, 95 year old Jimmy Dunston, keeps everyone at Cooroy golf club young at heart and we all love his enthusiasm.” The decision to expand the course to 18 holes around 10 years ago was critical to the Club’s success according to House Director Terri Cairns. “Long time local resident Wayne Brogden spearheaded this big expansion and it has made a big difference,” Terri Cairns said. “The 18 hole course means we can compete with other courses in the region and puts us in contention to attract some big district events and have events like the Mens Open Day or Womens Open Day and other great events.” Whilst events are important, Club members believe the friendly and relaxed atmosphere at Cooroy Golf Clubs is what sets it apart from other Clubs.

“There are no problems, no hassels. If you want to join, we can join you up,” Mr Patston said. “All visitors are welcome, members will always say hello. We encourage new golfers. “We don’t try to be regimental… we have got time sheets, but I always say if you can’t make it right on time just rock up when you can.” Wythes Real Estate Representative Samantha Hargrave said Cooroy’s positive community vibe, including its great sporting facilities, made it a very popular place to live. “More and more people are discovering the great lifestyle and sense of community on offer in Cooroy,” Ms Hargrave said. “The wide range of sporting clubs and facilities that exist in Cooroy make it particularly attractive for young families the place just comes alive with sport on weekends, and local teams and clubs receive strong support. “These are some of the little extras that people get when they move here and its part of the reason Cooroy is in such demand. “Fortunately with great new developments like Erindale Park on Lake Macdonald Drive, young families, first home buyers or anyone looking for great value, can find an affordable place to call home in one of the Hinterland’s most cherished communities.” For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au and sign up for regular updates via our Enewsletter or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

King of the Mountain Poker Run delivers a winning hand OVER 300 bike enthusiasts gathered at Pomona on 6 July for the King of the Mountain Poker Run. Poker Run organiser, Steven Stewart was thrilled by the number of participants. “It was our aim this year to increase participation and the additional 70 people who registered on the day was a great bonus. This year was our best turnout ever,” said Steven. The weather dealt riders a perfect day for bikes to wind their way through the beautiful Noosa Hinterland countryside. Stopping at designated checkpoints, riders collect playing cards gradually filling their poker hand. The rider holding the best hand on return to Pomona is declared the winner. Further prizes

are given for the next best hands and prizes are given out at random draws along the route. “This is a great community event,” said Heather Manders, Wimmers King of the Mountain chairperson, “All the prizes are donated by local shopkeepers and businesses. I’d like to thank all our sponsors for their ongoing support. We’re very grateful for their contribution.” This year the Poker Run raised over $7500 for the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. The Club is a not for profit organisation which is dedicated to serving others. The funds will go to helping the local community where needed and will support the Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival. .

3-2-1-Go! Billy carts race in Cooroy ON Sunday July 20, Noosa Christian College, Cooroy hosted its eleventh annual Billy Cart Grand Prix—a unique event on the Sunshine Coast. Billy cart racing—a hobby sport of yesteryear—has, in recent years, grown in popularity with events popping up around the country. Mr Bob Abbott from the Noosa Shire Council officially opened the event with billy cart enthusiasts from all ages enjoying friendly competition in a downhill derby, time trials and grand prix lap races. Place winners received cash prizes and trophies for their efforts. In addition to the races, locals also enjoyed a 3km Family Fun Run, Amusement rides and other Fete attractions. Many young people also entered the LEGO, cooking, art and photography competitions - with an impressive calibre of entries vying for cash and gift voucher prizes. School Principal Mr David Rogers was thrilled with the response from the wider community with a variety of groups and clubs participating in the day through entertainment, stalls and presentations. Proud of the event’s history and its unique appeal he says “This was another fantastic day of racing tradition for our school and a community event with so many people giving of their time and financial support to make it a success. We extend a sincere thank you to our sponsors and special guests the Combined Coastal Car Club, Human Rights Mafia, DanceForm, Dennis Massoud for his sand sculpting and our Emcee for the day - Mr Richard Hansen.” Noosa Christian College would also like to publicly thank all the generous local business and private sponsors - please visit the Billy Cart Website website www.noosabillycart.com to view an interactive list of sponsors, and a wrap up of the day. This unique gift shop and coffee shop has 3 leases in place in Reserve Street Pomona, one of the town’s main streets. The shop is opposite Stan Topper Park which holds country markets every 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month & the famous King of the Mountain Festival which takes place on the 4th Sunday in July. This business venture presents a great opportunity for a husband and wife team or a few friends pooling their resources. Gay and Ken started off in the centre shop, when the shop next door became available they decided it was time to expand & put a hole in the wall & leased that one, and they did the same with the 3rd shop. The larger premises has allowed Gay to incorporate beautiful gift lines such as Amgads linen, quilts, cushions, tablecloths etc. The shop also stocks Settler Bears, Victoria Lace linen, Linens ‘N’ Things linen, lead light lamps to mention a few & is always fully stocked. The table and chairs dotted throughout the shop are all covered with lovely tablecloths keeping in the style of the surroundings - so you can enjoy your lunches in comfort. Currently serving great coffee with a large range of homemade cakes all served on old china & with old fashioned knives and forks. This is a very unique shop with a great atmosphere & needs to find new owners who love the business like the current owners. The business is selling due to retirement & there is plenty of scope to take the business a step further.

For further information contact Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland on 5485 1788 or phone Gay at the shop on 5485 1883 or just come for a drive and look for yourself.

in the world. On a local level we are a non profit club run 100% by volunteers and are made up of predominately school age students but also cater for adults. In our karate training we aim to develop our students physically, mentally and morally. The crede of the club is to “Seek perfection of character, be faithful, endeavour, respect others, and refrain from violent behavior.” Although we are a traditional karate style we also have some developed students doing very well in the sports karate area. They have for a few years now competed successfully at State, National and International levels including gold medals at Australian Karate Federation National level. In March 2014 we had six students attend the JKA Australia National Seminar and Championships held in Melbourne. The goal of the Championships was to select a team to represent Japan Karate Association of

Australia at the 13th Funakoshi Gichin World Karate-Do Championships to be held in Tokyo, Japan in October 2014. Five of our students (Jesse Vines 16, Tyndle Colley14, Zacc Hennings14, Maddi Debono13 and Jacinta Waretini 13) have been successful and will now represent Japan Karate Association of Australia in Tokyo in October this year. This is a great personal achievement for these five students. It is also a real inspiration to other younger students and to others in the community, which will benefit the future development of our local club and in turn our local community. The cost of attending the championships in Japan is very costly for the families. Costs include airfares, accommodation, entry fees, tracksuits, equipment and transport. To assist their children to achieve this the families work hard to run various fundraising events regularly. Lew

COOROY RAG NOOSA Council, Butter Factory Arts Centre presents: Bones and Bouquets part 2 by local artist and art educator, Rosie Lloyd-Giblett. In continuation of the artist’s creative exploration, the exhibition pays hommage to the Australian landscape and her farming heritage. As a second chapter to a previous exhibition, the artist revisits her pastoral upbringing,

identifying her personal and emotional connection to the land in which she was raised, and her environmental concerns about the recent issue of mining and coal seam gas development currently occurring in the Surat Basin of the Western Darling Downs in Queensland. Using familiar objects salvaged from her childhood, Lloyd-Giblett draws herself closer and

closer to the land where she came from and in the process, unearthing a new understanding of the land, particularly “…the temporality of country. It is ours only as a loan; it is not for keeps, but ours to give

back.” Says LloydGiblett. The works in Bones and Bouquets part 2, serve as both a requeim and celebration of a land under seige and the artist’s navigation of her memories investigating a

journey that has drawn her deeper and deeper into the Earth. Also on show is an exhibition of 2D and 3D works by primary students of the Cooroy State School titled Connections to 16 August,

2014. These young artists have created a diverse array of artworks exploring themes like Fish, Flowers, Trees, Picasso Faces and more! The Butter Factory Arts Centre is located at 10 Maple Street, Cooroy

and is open free to the public from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to noon. For further information about exhibitions and events, phone the centre on 5329 6580.

Boreen paint artists to exhibit at Pomona

Robotics rule COOROY State School is very appreciative of the support of the Cooroy business community. This shows itself in many ways and one program that has been sustained thanks to the support of the Bendigo Bank is the robotics program. This program enables students with technology skills the chance to build and design their own robot and program it to specific things. It is only possible due to funding provided through the Bendigo Bank. The children decided recently they wanted to design posters for display in the bank as a thank you for the support provided. Curriculum Coordinator Kathryn Cook said she was inundated with posters which is evidence of the value the students place on the program. “The judging of the posters was very difficult as there were so many high quality posters submitted. In the end first place went to Bailey from year 5, second to Paige from year 6 and third to Kira from year 2,” said Mrs Cook. “The Bendigo bank came to the party with great prizes for the children. Residents will get a chance to see what robotics really is during Cooroy State School Showcase Week from 11 August,” Mrs Cook continued.

POMONA Railway Station Gallery presents an exhibition of three extremely talented and popular Boreen Point artists: Michelle Knightley, Teleena Rodgers and Rosie Edgar. The theme of this exhibition is “seashores...” and will open on 2 August. The exhibition will reflect the relationship the artists have with their environment living on Lake Cootharaba and will draw on the rich tapestry of colour which line the lake’s shores and extend to the adjoining hinterland environment. “We feel privileged to live in close proximity to such a vibrant natural ecosystem, and we are inspired daily to express our sense of place through our arts practice.” This exhibition will have paintings and ceramics and will run to 4 September. EXHIBITIONS 21 August – 11 October Judith Laws: Beauty and Tragedy on Fraser Shores – re-imagining the Eliza Fraser saga, including paintings from Fraser Island Official opening & book launch: 6pm, Friday 22 August The magic and intrigue of Fraser Island is shown through the paintings of Judith Laws, using glowing colours of turquoise, emerald green, reds, oranges and golds of the perched lakes; a scribbly-gum forest with the flash of a brilliantly coloured parrot’s wing, and coloured sands and cliffs to the weird rough face of an old man banksia seed. Judith Laws has always been intrigued by the Eliza Fraser story and was compelled to show a female insight into this woman’s tragedy. Her interpretations in paint on canvas and vibrant pallet does not show Mrs Fraser as a romantic figure but rather as a brave, ordinary woman weighed down by circumstances beyond her control. Through these expressive works the viewer can feel the artist’s fascination with Fraser Island that extend to her involvement and empathy with Mrs Fraser entering into the drama of the story themselves. 12 ways to boost childhood immunity IT’S that time of the year again when the weather changes and the seasons roll around into Winter. It can often be the time when colds, flu’s and other general health concerns circulate through the community - especially with children. Here are my top tips for building children’s immunity (can also be used for adults!). 1 - Eat seasonal and local. Mother Nature provides us what we need just at the right time of year, think of mandarins and citrus fruits which provide our bodies with vitamin C and bioflavonoids that help to enhance immunity and reduce the severity of colds. Shop at your local farmers market to easily get in tune with what is being grown now in your area. 2 - Make your own bone or vegetable broths. (check out the RECIPE in this newsletter). Broths are the number one superfood in my book. They are rich in minerals and probiotics, easy to di-

gest, versatile, contain good fats, helps repair the gut and are beneficial to the Kidneys and Brain in Chinese Medicine. Use broths to make soups, cook basmati, brown rice or quinoa in, or sip on their own. 3 - Use supplements if needed. If there is a history of recurrent colds, coughs or virus’, or during a cold it may be a good idea to supplement with vitamin C, Zinc, essential fatty acids and probiotics. We stock all of these, which are suitable for children, in the clinic. 4 - Try aromatherapy. Eucalyptus, Tea tree, Clove, Lavender and Peppermint are beautiful oils to use in an oil burner or diffuser to help purify the air as they have antimicrobial, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties - using them once per week as prevention works well and daily if there is a cold circulating in your home. Making your own vaporub with the above oils and a base cream to rub on the chest, back and soles of feet is also an option. Dilute well, one drop of

each oil (minus clove) in 100mls of cream. DoTerra also make two beautiful oil blends: ‘Breathe’ and ‘Purify’ which are both available in the clinic. 5 - Space clear and declutter. Spending 5-15 minutes per day to keep your home clear of clutter allows fresh Qi (energy) to circulate. Doing a bigger ‘spring clean’ might also be necessary - out with the old and in with the new! 6 - Eat mushrooms or take in supplement form. Mushrooms are widely known for their immune enhancing properties and have been used in Chinese and other traditional medicines for centuries. The simple button mushroom is fantastic as are shiitake. If children don’t like them, try adding them to vegetable bakes or bolognaise sauce, or use them to make a vegetable broth. We also stock a supplement in the clinic that is great for kids (in powder form to make into a drink). 7 - Improve air quality. Open up the windows during the day and close

again at night. Check if there are any parts of the house that feel damp and pay extra attention to bring fresh air and sunlight to this area. 8 - Improve water quality and hydration. Research different filtration systems if you are on town water and possibly also if you are on tank water. No cold drinks from fridge as this ‘puts out’ the digestive fire or energy. 9 - Eat warm breakfasts. This is another way to enhance digestive functioning. It is also a good idea to send some warm food in a thermos with your child to school if possible. 10 - Reduce inflammatory foods - processed sugar, wheat and dairy are the main offenders for children. 70% of our immunity come from the gut or digestive system. We most certainly are what we eat. ‘Crowd in’ more of the good stuff vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, seaweeds, whole grains, broths -to ‘crowd out’ the not so good. 11- Increase good fats in children’s diets.

Fat is the primary food for growing children in my opinion. Good fats are found in organic butter and ghee, duck fat for cooking, coconut oil, olive oil, flax oil and other good quality nut oils, eggs, whole grains, seeds, nuts, coconut, legumes and sea vegetables. The brain and nervous system are built on fat (especially cholesterol) and continue to require large amounts to develop. Fat also helps the absorption of many crucial vitamins and minerals, for example vitamins A, D, E, K and calcium. Saturated fats fight infection and enhance immunity as they contain special milk fats called glycosphingolipids that help protect against gastrointestinal infections. Chicken fat (aka chicken broth!) also contains palmitoleic acid - an anti microbial monounsaturated fat involved in fighting infection. 12 - If lots of phlegm and congestion present avoid ‘Damp producing foods’ - the above listed inflammatory foods, bananas,

cold foods and drinks, peanuts and peanut butter, over eating and rushed eating or eating whilst watching TV/ reading etc. Above all, encourage digestive functioning and the body will take care of itself. And be ok with your child catching a cold - it truly does

build their immune system - just as long as they return to health quickly For any questions or to purchase any high potency immune support supplements please phones the Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine clinic on 5442 5526

KATHRYN Oats will be bringing more than twenty five years of post graduate experience to Advanced Physiotherapy Cooroy. After graduating from the Otago School of Physiotherapy in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1987, Kathryn spent six years working in various hospital settings, before branching out into private practice. She has specialised in Sports medicine, musculo-skeletal injuries, manual therapy and paediatrics. In 2013 Kath was looking for a change in how she worked and became a PINC certified Physiotherapist. PINC is a specialized survivorship programme dedicated to improving the quality of life, wellbeing and overall health of women after a cancer diagnosis. The PINC programme was developed by NZ Physiotherapist Lou James, a Pilates clinician and former NZ Triathlon representative, after seeing first hand the physical and emotional toll that cancer had on the lives of the women affected and the people close to them. The programme is formatted into three phases, Post-op, Recovery Phase and Fit-

ness Phase. The initial sessions are one on one, individual and designed to meet the needs of each client depending on where they are in their treatment and recovery. With better diagnosis and treatment of cancers more people are surviving and living longer, but they can be suffering debilitating side effects of the treatment such as fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of movement, lymphodema and memory challenges. These physiotherapist guided sessions can help in: Regaining strength, flexibility, and confidence in their body, Improve core strength and posture, Help ease pain and muscular tension, Help increase energy levels and manage fatigue, Teach women exercises they can do to enhance their own, recovery after surgery and prevent long- term problems. There is over whelming scientific evidence on the benefits of exercise for not only preventing cancer but also decreasing the risk of secondary cancers by up to 50%, and giving survivors much better outcomes. If you have knee surgery, you go to physio for treatment and exercises, but cancer patients don’t seem to get the rehabilitation that they need. In Queensland the PINC and STEEL, (STEEL is the programme for men) physios are launching a charitable foundation in September to help provide funding for men and women to access the programme and to promote the benefits of exercise in prevention and recovery. Further information can be found by phoning Advance Physiotherapy or online at pincandsteel.com and Facebook. PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation Australia. For Kathryn, this has expanded to a passion, in not just helping women to survive, but to thrive during and after their treatment - drawing on a lifelong passion for yoga, meditation, exercise, adventure and laughter to empower women in their healing. Is toxicity the reason you feel unwell?’ WE are exposed to increasing levels of toxins every day. It is estimated that several thousand new chemicals are introduced into the environment every year adding to the total toxin load on our bodies. These toxins are found everywhere from the food and water we consume to the products we use on our bodies and hair. Our bodies have specific detox mechanisms to eliminate toxins. For many people these mechanisms can become overwhelmed from the sheer level of toxin exposure combined with poor detox pathways which can be caused by specific nutrient deficiencies. The end result is a net

toxin retention. Signs you may need to detoxify include digestive problems, feeling tired and unhealthy, having difficulty thinking clearly, skin problems, allergies, sinus or dark circles under your eyes and bad breath or body odour. If any of these symptoms are bothering you then you should attend the free information evening on “Is Toxicity the Reason You Feel Unwell?” being held by Make a Difference Health and Fitness at the QCWA hall in Cooroy on Thursday 7th August at 6.30pm. Hinteractive Physio is now providing Mat and Equipment Pilates classes along with Yoga classes, and Women’s Health Physio Rebecca Steele is offering Ladies Safe Strength classes. According to Rebecca, most ladies who undertake exercise classes are not aware of the potential dangers in the exercises they are performing. “Women, especially those who have had children, need to make sure they are exercising to take care of their weakest link - in most cases the pelvic floor and lower abdominal muscles”, says Rebecca. “It is

Hormones and your Skin How Hormones Affect the Skin: Hormones can affect the skin in a number of ways. For most, the introduction to imbalanced skin begins in adolescence with blemishing and excessive oiliness often accompanying the body’s first hormonal peak. While for many, the temperamental skin of our teen years fades with age, for others it is a concern that continues well into adulthood. Even for those with relatively well-balanced skin, intermittent fluctuations—such as during menstruation, starting or stopping birth control or the onset of menopause—can wreak havoc on one’s complexion, particularly in terms of moisture balance. Hormones affect moisture balance by stimu-

lating the skin’s sebaceous glands—natural, oil-producing glands—to produce more or less sebum, or natural oil, than normal. Elevated levels of the male hormone testosterone, for instance, tend to encourage sebum overproduction, often leading to an oily, blemish-prone complexion. Decreased levels of the female hormone estrogen, on the other hand, often result in drier skin as sebum production is scaled back. Sebum production, however, is not the only factor influenced by the body’s internal chemistry. Recent scientific evidence suggests a strong link between estrogen and collagen production, with elevated levels of the hormone playing a key role in stimulating pro-

duction of the structural tissue. According to a University of Michigan Health System study published in September 2008, topical estrogen treatments increased the level of collagen significantly in areas unaffected by chronic sun damage. Addressing Hormones in Skin Care At Lakeridge we have a number of at home products to assist with your hormonal skin needs. Aspect have a selection of products specifically for teenage skins. Its a simple, uncomplicated skin care range designed with the busy teenager in mind. Teen Aspect is suitable for pre-teens and teenagers who want a quick and easy-to-use skin care regime. Free of the typical nasties, it will not irritate, dry out or clog the skin. We also stock Cosmedix Clarity Serum that improves skin AND fights breakouts. With salicylic acid, to purify skin, encapsulated Vitamin A, to resurface and renew, also chamomile, aloe vera, willow herb, and tea tree oil to sooth and calm skin, what more could you ask for. These products are reasonably prices starting at $16. Balancing Act Ways to Combat Hormonal Skin · Watch What You Eat When the body is poorly nourished, acidic or overwhelmed by toxins, the skin visibly suffers. A healthy diet, rich in fibre, iron, calcium and essential vitamins (think grains, fruits and leafy vegetables), can help restore balance, remove toxins and minimize the hormonal response.

· Cut out the Caffeine Stimulating adrenaline production, caffeine alters the brain’s chemistry, inviting a flood of stress hormones which can adversely affect the skin. By limiting your caffeine intake, you can help control artificial fluctuations and help encourage hormonal stability. · Get More Sleep Our sleep cycle is essential to maintaining proper hormonal regulation. Interrupting or abbreviating the body’s circadian rhythm can result in imbalance and increased stress— both of which can trigger skin conditions. Come in and talk to your team at Lakeridge Health and Beauty – 3 Ruby St, COOROY, ph - 5442 6239. Our Clinicians will assess your skins needs and prescribe the best skin care for ultimate results.

Self-Care is not selfish MANY people, including mums and carers, may be able to identify with the feeling of being too busy looking after everyone else, and not having any time left to take care of Self. This lack of self-care might reveal itself in ways such as not getting enough exercise, not eating well or not taking time out to simply relax. What is sometimes forgotten when we are trying to please everyone, whilst neglecting Self, is that no one really benefits in the long run. In contrast, the benefits of self-care are two fold: Firstly, feeling refreshed we can perform with the full power of our ability and energy, so become more productive. Secondly, by being happier, those around us (our partner, family or friends) benefit from the full force of our positive thoughts and actions. So far from being selfish, self-care is an essential ingredient to real giving. If we are putting ourselves last all the time, it may be a sign that we need to appreciate ourselves more. We may need to acknowledge our true self-worth, and see ourselves as deserving of our own love, attention and respect. Positively cultivating our self-image is another way of giving a boost and reminding ourselves of our self-worth. By nurturing our

appearance we can feel confident and happy, which in turn enhances our inner tranquility and strength. We are all unique, so it is important to do whatever it is that will make a difference personally. It might be taking time to listen to a favourite piece of music, having a pedicure or curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate and reading a beautiful, inspirational book. No matter what it is, we have the right to enjoy this “me” time. Also, learning to have caring thoughts about Self, will reveal we are deserving of this time, and in doing so, help make it a reality. Remember, when we feel great and look great, we do better – it’s as simple as that! A workshop on how we can feel great through self-belief and positive thought, as well as look great through clever and creative wardrobe choice, will be held at the CWA Hall in Cooroy on Saturday 16 August. Workshop leaders are Cat, a Personal Stylist and Deb, a Louise Hay Heal Your Life Teacher. Both are passionate about every one realizing how special they are. STARTS FIRST TIME

From strength to strength THERE has been a lot happening of late at the Impact Boxing Academy. The team have been competeing regulary as always and competeing well with some good solid victories. Earlier this month we travelled to Victoria to attend a week long Invitational National Development camp. The camp was a huge success and was my first camp as the newly appointed Boxing Australia - Queensland Development Coach. The aim of these camps is to indentify athletes that Boxing Australia foresees have the ability to go on & compete at a representative level in the future.

These athletes then enter the development program to help create a clear pathway to the AIS and ultimately onto representative teams. In saying all that I am proud to say that six boxers from the Impact Boxing Academy and one Boxer (Bryce Hegarty) from the Noosa Box Office were chosen to attend the camp in Melbourne. There were a total of 54 athletes from all over Australia in attendance. They trained 3 sessions a day for the 5 days. Our athletes were a definite stand out from the rest of the athletes and I am very proud of how they performed. It is safe to say that our little community is producing some amazing talent and hopefully in the near future you will see these kids wearing the Green & Gold! Last weekend the 3 Impact fighters travelled to the Gold Coast to compete at the Ashmore PCYC. Sam Cameron-Hands & Taylah Robertson were unable to get suitable matches so they both put there hands up to do exhibition bouts with opponents in different age and weight categories. Both boxers put on a superb display of boxing & even though they were exhibition bouts they both out boxed their opponents. Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands stepped into the ring to fight Isacc Pillon from the Gold Coast. Benny started this bout a little slower than usual & clearly lost the first round. Round 2 seen Benny find his rhythm and out box Issac with his continuous attacks. Round three and with both boys knowing that the winner of this round would be the winner of the bout, it was on! Both boxers turned up the heat with some brilliant combinations being thrown and landed. The judges decision was in and Benny was announced the winner by way of a split points decision!

“Proud of how these guys performed tonight. Sam and Taylah are at the stage now where I am having trouble getting fights for them. No one seems to want to fight them at the moment? We may have to start looking for interstate opponents in the future. Benny continued on his winning way tonight. They have asked for a rematch so we are locked in for the 26th July for that one” coach Mark Evans said. The Impact crew are now training hard & focussing on the National Golden Gloves tournament to be held over 3 days in August at Caboolture. THE World Cup winner has been crowned and the local football season has now reached its half way mark for 2014 – and all is well with The World Game. Locally, soccer club Cooroora United had a really nice surprise for every one of their players at training this week. Courtesy of their sponsorship from Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, nearly 260 club

members received a new training shirt which will also be worn by the players each time they play home and away games. Cooroora United President, Tony McCarthy took the time to thank branch manager, Geoff Edwards for the Community Bank’s long term support local the club faithful for their part in a season that has seen the club move ahead on many levels. “We all know that

sponsors play a key role in supporting a team and the Cooroy Community Bank branch sponsorship of Cooroora United is one of many who continue to help us paying the game we love. The bank has provided us with a lot of help on and off the field over the past five years and our club is on a real high right now,” Tony said. “The players are working really hard at all age levels and it’s wonder-

ful to see the results. To see so many of our teams out there enjoying their football on so many levels is terrific for all the volunteers who put so much time into Cooroora United,” he added. Geoff Edwards said he’s delighted to have been able to support the club for another season. “Cooroora United is made up of special people who give so much of themselves and always seem to do it with a smile on their face. We see our sponsorship as a great fit and it was really special for me to on-hand to present the new training shirts to some of the teams.

It’s great that more locals are realising the banking they do with us make sponsorships like this possible. Few banks list their key business strategy as working for the benefit of a community, but so it is with our Community Bank branches. I look forward to catching a few games in the lead up to the finals and we look forward to sponsoring Cooroora United again in 2015. Go the wombats!” Geoff said. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au.
