Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival

It’s on again!! Walk, stroll, climb or just relax, eat, drink and listen to the music. There is something for everyone at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival to be held from 6.30 am to 3.00 pm on Sunday 18th August 2019. Anyone who wishes to climb Cooroy Mountain needs to be at the registration desk no later than 1.00 pm as that is the cutoff time for the last climbers for the day. This is the Rotary Club of Cooroy’s major fundraiser for the year. Entry to the festival is $10 whilst children 12 and under are admitted free. Cooroy Rotary provides the public with a once a year opportunity to come and enjoy a family fun day packed with lots of events and activities. Billy tea and damper and a hearty BBQ breakfast is a great way to start the day. Stroll through the rain forest walk or sit and enjoy the enter-

tainment. There is a bush poets corner, music by Pineapple Crush and a live broadcast by Noosa Community Radio 101.3FM. For those wanting a challenge other than the mountain climb there will be hobby horse racing at the festival site. Come along and find out what a horse whisperer is all about. An added attraction this year is a unit called Airbus Australia. It is the only mechanical musical DC-3 in the world, featuring a pipe organ, pianola and a mechanical button accordion. The rear end opens like a real cargo plane and you can hear music from the 1920’s through to modern classic. If you like aviation mixed with good music, this is a chance to enjoy both. It will be a great day out and Cooroy Rotary will again be raising money to support local charities.

“We are very grateful to our two main sponsors, Cooroy Mountain Spring Water for providing access to the mountain and McDermott Helicopters who will provide short flights over the mountain and Cooroy. Tickets for the flights are still only $55 and are limited to 100 so come early to ensure you are not disappointed,” said Cooroy Rotary President Warren O’Neill. One hour is usually ample time to walk to the top of the mountain track. Closed footwear is mandatory for walking up the mountain and we recommend you bring a hat, some water, sunscreen and patience with you. Pink marker tape every 50 meters or so makes it quite easy to follow all the way to the summit. As it will be congested on the mountain with so many people wanting to take this once a year opportunity, please be patient with others and

enjoy the day. Sorry – no dogs allowed to ensure the safety of everyone. “Mountain climbing is an exciting, exhilarating and rewarding experience; it is healthy exercise that creates wonderful memories. Cooroy Mountain is suitable for all ages as long as you remember it is a mountain track and not a paved walkway. It should take approximately 2 hours return when done at a leisurely pace with rest stops,” added Warren. Eftpos machines will be available for those who don’t have any cash available so you can purchase raffle tickets for a camper trailer raffle (which will be drawn at Christmas in Cooroy), buy a T Shirt, purchase your tickets in the helicopter flights or even pay for your entry by card. Joy of the Journey The BRAG Trade

Turning the Hinterland Orange - Wythes Real Estate opens second office It’s been a busy eighteen months for Directors and Co-owners of Wythes Real Estate, John and Sirah Robb, as they announce the opening of their second office, in Doonan (formerly Fiona Winter Realty). The pair acquired Cooroy based Wythes Real Estate in November 2017 and haven’t looked back since. With a diverse skill-set from backgrounds in engineering and health, John and Sirah focussed on implementing innovative business solutions and training to provide a platform for all staff to reach their full potential and achieve exceptional results for their clients. Their approach has resulted in what is clearly an industry leading level of service and it is evident their success has not been by accident. They have achieved an unprecedented amount of both state and national recognition in and out of the real estate industry. Throughout 2019 Wythes has been awarded for Innovation in the prestigious Real Estate Institute of Queensland

(REIQ) Awards for Excellence, announced as a finalist in the same awards for Corporate Support Person of the Year (Deb Aleckson), team member and one of the former owners of Wythes Real Estate, Alisa Wythes, was named finalist for Regional Sales Agent of the Year (REB Women in Real Estate Awards) and they were announced as the leading agency in Cooroy at the Rate My Agent Awards. In this time, Sirah has also been individually recognised for her leadership of the Wythes team, being named as a finalist for Regional Principal of the Year in both the 2019 Real Estate Business (REB) Awards and the REB Women in Real Estate Awards, as well as being announced as a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Awards for Corporate Business Woman of the Year (results announced in August). With such a long list of achievements in such a short period of time, it’s no wonder the hinterland is turning orange.

John and Sirah say they are thrilled to be able to grow the Wythes brand, welcoming Fiona Winter, Jim Ennis, Shane Wickson and Darren Hilliard into their team of sales agents. Penny Neep completes the Doonan office by transferring from Cooroy. John and Sirah add that their growth into Doonan is particularly exciting, as it is where Sirah built her career from 2012. They comment on how amazing it is and how grateful they are to lead such a powerhouse team. The pair are advocates for women in real estate, supporting women in leadership roles, working mums in particular, and their latest venture sees them further strengthen their already strong position in the market with some incredible women in their team. John and Sirah say it is a privilege to have the opportunity to build on the successful business Fiona has created over the past 10 years. Fiona notes John and Sirah’s achievements over the last 18 months, along with their successful working

John and Sirah Robb history together previously, made them the clear choice when it came to identifying the next leaders of her business. Fiona adds the move allows her to spend more time with family and transition into a purely sales focused role. John,

Sirah and their team are committed to offering the Noosa Hinterland and surrounds the same award-winning service and contribution to their community Wythes has become synonymous with, now from two locations.

The BRAG Trade is a collective of early career artists with common links through volunteering at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) featuring 5 artists - Kevin Aldcroft, Gabrielle McDonald, Paul Perry, Patricia Sheppard and Raymond Singleton. This exhibition is the largest body of work the artists have presented in one place... examining the Joy of the Journey: • the joy of creating • the joy of each artistic journey • the joy of travel expressed visually & • the joy of where the resulting artwork may take the viewer. The exhibition will explore the artists’ diverse relationships with forms, themes and techniques. Many of the works are visually inspired pieces with unconventional painting techniques, dimensional drawings and multi-patterned pieces.

.

We’re thrilled to announce the addition of a new Wythes office in Doonan. We look forward to offering you the same award winning service, now from two locations.

Never bored in the boardroom

(l-r) SCCFSL chair, Rick Cooper, Josh Hodgkinson, Jesaiah Harris and Ty Kroes from Noosa District State High and Bendigo Bank's Simone Flavelle In business, some have a dream of sitting on a board of directors one day. Well, that opportunity has arrived a few decades early for three Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) Year 12 students and they’re pretty excited. Ty Kroes, Jesaiah Harris and Josh Hodgkinson all have a keen interest in business. Earlier this year, they

were appointed as Junior Observer Directors for 2019 on a board that manages one of the only few publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. As many locals are aware, SCCFSL (Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited) manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Tewantin Noosa, Pomona and

Marcoola. Since 2008, these same Community Bank branches have combined to give back more than $2.1 million to community groups, schools and organisations right across our region. The branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more money stays in the area for

local investment. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at the new Tewantin Noosa branch and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorships at NDSHS, Ty, Jesaiah and Josh were made aware of a program where they could attend

each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how community banking works on a boardroom level. It’s a big step in the right direction in the development of any career and they have seen firsthand how it can lead to a great job - maybe even close to home. “I know I speak for Jesaiah and Josh in saying how happy we are to have been given this opportunity,” NDSHS captain, Ty said. “Along with each of the branch managers the SCCFSL board is filled with directors who have years of experience and great success in the business world and they’re really lovely people too. They’re all actively involved in their community and keen to pass on their knowledge. “It’s a great head start to learn how a board works and also to learn more about the important part the Community Bank branches play in Noosa and the North Shore’s future. It’s just amazing how much time and money the branches have invested in our communities already for all our benefit,” Ty added.

Noosa Open Studios is an art lovers delight From the sparkling beaches to sweeping hinterland vistas, it is no surprise that a plethora of artistic souls call Noosa home and draw inspiration from all region offers. An art lovers delight, Noosa Open Studios provides the opportunity to get up close and personal to the artistic process with 69 talented Noosa artists opening their studios to the public during the 10 day event in August. Providing a rare opportunity to watch artists working in their own creative spaces, visitors to Noosa Open Studios can indulge their senses. “The beauty of Noosa Open Studios is that it appeals to all art lovers with such a wide array of art on offer including ceramics, glass, mixed media, metal work, photography, digital media, sculpture and paintings in all media,” said Noosa Open Studios President, Chris Bell. A number of workshops also take place throughout the week that allow participants to learn new skills and techniques and per-

haps a pick up a few well kept secrets. Noosa Open Studios runs from 16 to 25 August and as well as the 69 artist studios there are also seven galleries participating. The region has also been conveniently separated into six locality trails to make it easy for visitors to find the studios. Whether you chose just one of the trails in Noosa, Sunshine Beach, Mt Tinbeerwah, Eumundi, Cooroy, Pomona or do all six, you are sure to find some amazing art creations! Whether you just love looking at art or are looking for the perfect piece to add to your collection or enhance a spot in your home or garden, you are sure to find what you desire on the trail. All of the studios and galleries are open on both weekends of the event. Some studios will also be open during the week and others by appointment. For full details on the gallery openings, check the studio guide. For more information visit www.noosaopenstudios.com.au.

Sandy takes out Billy Cart Grand Prix

Left to right: Mrs Jeanette Martin - College Principal, Noosa Christian College, Cooroy, Marty Hunt MP, Member for Nicklin, Sandy Bolton MP Member for Noosa, Tony Wellington Mayor Noosa Shire Council. Tensions and expectations were high in the annual Billy Cart Race at Noosa Christian College, Cooroy this month. I was there to defend my title and Mayor Tony Wellington and Sandy Bolton, Member for Noosa, were there to take it off me. I drew a spot out wide on the track and the tactics were discussed with our “pushers” as anticipation built on the start line. Ready ... go ... and we were off to a flying start. One of my pushers took a tumble but bravely got up and kept going. By then Bolton and Wellington were left to fight it out for the win with Sandy taking out this year’s title. The best part of the day though was

watching as the young kids ran around the track in their own homemade cars. It was great to get along to the school again for their annual fundraiser and I look forward to next year’s event. Congratulations to the parents, teachers and kids who put on such a great fundraiser for their school. I also want to thank the Cooroy community groups, clubs and sporting providers who recently met with me and emailed me regarding their infrastructure and equipment needs for the future. I look forward to helping all our local groups get a share of Government funding into the future to help them provide the great services they do for our community. Marty Hunt, Member for Nicklin

Feedback on signage extended Council will extend the consultation period on the draft signage laws and also arrange more meetings with key business groups. Mayor Tony Wellington said the extension came at the request of local business groups and Council was happy to oblige, extending the deadline for submissions to Friday, August 9. “It is just a draft at this stage and we want to ensure that, as part of the engagement process, we get to hear from our community about the proposals. So we are happy to provide an extension to ensure that everyone who wants to have a say can do so. “The current proposals are not substantially different to the historical approach to signage, with the exception of a suggested new approach to real estate pointer signs, tear drops flags and A-frames,” the Mayor said. “There is also a suggestion to establish a registration fee for businesses. This is aimed at partial cost recovery so that residents aren’t footing the bill for compliance checks on business signage. “The current proposal is for the registration fee to be waived for compliant businesses initially and then introduced in the 2020-2021 financial year. But this is all up to council making a decision based on consideration of the submissions received. “Council has made no determinations on the local laws issue. We are very happy to facilitate further consultation sessions with our key business representative groups to find a workable solution that meets a range of needs.” Council’s proposed local law is designed to simplify the signage regulation process. Signage is currently regulated through both the planning scheme and the local laws. “Our aim is to migrate the planning scheme elements into local laws,” the Mayor said. “For some businesses, this will ultimately be cheaper, because they won’t have to make a development application to deal with signage matters. “One of Noosa’s iconic features is its subdued, low-key approach to signage. That is an important identifying feature of Noosa which supports the Noosa brand. Like avoidance of other big city symbols, our intrinsic approach to visual amenity underpins our tourism industry and is an adjunct to the success of all Noosabased businesses,” the Mayor said. “We appreciate there is strong opinion on certain aspects of the proposals, so extending the consultation period and facilitating more meetings with our key business groups is a reasonable response,” Cr Wellington said. Submissions can be made via the Your Say Noosa website at yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au

Has anyone else got a problem with the loading zone in Emerald Street? I believe that the garden on the footpath (see pic) needs to go. Delivery drivers can’t open their passenger door unless they park outside the yellow lines which then makes it dangerous to get out of the driver’s door. It’s also dangerous for other traffic coming up Emerald Street. I’ve spoken to Council about this but have been told it’s not a priority. Loosely defined, a family business is that in which two or more family members work, and in which at least 50% of the ownership rests in family hands. Family-owned business is by far the largest sector in the Australian economy. If you operate a family business you will face some unique challenges. In addition to the typical concerns of a business of your size, in your industry, you will need to consider the following: • How can you balance the different needs, interests and priorities of family members and non-family members in your business? • How can you raise capital without sacrificing equity? • What criteria have you developed for family members joining the business? • Do you have a family council or other mechanism to ensure all family members have a say in the running of the business? • To whom will you pass control and/or ownership of your business? How can you ensure that this process is planned and orderly? Family businesses often lack the right outlook and professional management practices to maximise the long-term growth and value in their businesses. They have the strong desire to accumulate wealth, but few family businesses seem willing to accept outside investment or use modern business practices to maintain or increase their value. Key missing elements are a business plan with written job descriptions for management and a formal strategic plan. All businesses should also have a documented ownership succession plan. Other areas where family businesses could improve are having non-family board members, hold regular board meetings, have a plan to address technological opportunities, make use of business-to-business e-commerce practices

and benchmark their business against world best practice. It’s clear that a lot of effort and heartache goes into building a business so don’t fail to extract the maximum value when you exit. Whether or not you are planning on selling your business in the near or distant future, there are some fundamental strategies that can protect and build the value of a family business. If you have any questions on your business would like to discuss any other banking matter, please feel free to drop into the branch and see us or call me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona). French & Vintage returns to Cooroy, but for a limited time only Local antiques dealer Debra Palmen is excited to have opened a new pop-up shop in Cooroy. “I open a short-term pop-up shop every year”, says Debra “but this year is special because I’ll be working in conjunction with Old Barn Café, which has a stylish atmosphere that will complement our stock nicely.” Debra and her husband Doug travel to France and England every year to source fabulous vintage and antique pieces, which they sell at wholesale prices to the public. “We aim for a fast turnover, rather than best price”, says Debra. “That way we have happy customers who keep coming back, and we get to go to Europe every year to find lovely things – it works for everyone.” “We’re not sure how long we’ll keep the popup shop open”, says Debra. “Certainly until the middle of August, but then we’ll see – it depends on how well I can keep the shop stocked. We never keep a pop-up shop open more than three months at a time because we sell at wholesale prices to the public, so we always run out of stock.” But Debra thinks working at the rear of Old Barn café (formerly French & Gorgeous) is going to be problematic. “Have you tried their coffee and cakes?”, says Debra. “And now they’re introducing cheese boards, and you can BYO wine for lunch or afternoon tea – it could prove deadly to be sitting within ordering distance every day!” French & Vintage opened on 24 July at Old Barn Café, 15 Diamond Street, but for a limited time only. Why not visit while you can, to find something stylish, unique and beautiful for your own home?

Superannuation Did you know? ...that upon your death your superannuation benefits don’t automatically form part of your estate. When you die the Trustee of your super fund decides who receives your super. Many people are unaware that their entire super, and often their insurance benefits are up for grabs among a spouse, partner, children and dependants they leave behind. Under superannuation law, the Trustee of your super fund has the discretion and obligation to use this power. This means that if you haven’t done it already, you should think about whether you would like to nominate your estate or other beneficiaries and complete a Binding Death Benefits Nomination (BDBN). Provided you have an up to date and valid BDBN you remove any uncertainty concerning who receives the death benefit from you Super. There are different types of nominations so it’s important that you confirm yours is up to date and makes a valid nomination. Lapsing or non-lapsing BDBN - many Super Funds are now enabling customers to have a non-lapsing BDBN so you don’t need to update. If your nomination is lapsing you need to be sure you remember to update it at least once every three years. A large number of Super Funds will allow a reversionary nomination where the nominated person (generally a spouse) will automatically continue receiving the pension after your death. A reversionary nomination usually overrides a BDBN, so it is important to get the right advice before completing a nomination. Binding Nominations can make your estate planning more precise and effective, however, they are just part of it and it’s important that your will, enduring powers of attorney and advance health directive also reflect your current wishes. If you require assistance with your estate planning, the team at SPM Law are ready to help, phone 5440 4800.

Creating change through our children After 12 months of our Community Partnership Program, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton is pleased to see the breadth of activities undertaken by our youngsters who otherwise may have not been able to connect to their passions and experience the sense of community that comes along with it. “One of the greatest ways we can ensure our kids develop resilience, connectivity, relevance and community spirit is through joining a ‘tribe’ often through a shared desire for fitness, fun, creativity or adventure. Vibrancy of body, mind and spirit comes in so many forms, with all having a commonality of belonging “Ms Bolton says. “Being able to tackle challenges at any age with confidence, comes from having access to good role models in addition to parents and extended family - a mentor, coach or teacher, who can put into context the behaviour of others, as well assist in the development of self through empowerment and enabling to ‘do’. “ As a child, Ms Bolton experienced intimidation and discrimination due to a number of factors, including coming from a single parent household and moving, often without networks.

“I was fortunate to have access to activities that enabled me to withstand being an ‘outsider’’. This sets you up to being able to journey through life’s smooth as well rocky times.” she said In its first year, the Noosa electorate office funded 114 youngsters, providing a range of assistance including transport, equipment, registration and course fees. With a total of 10 organisations involved, as well referral partners in the Salvation Army, Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul, United Synergies and Noosa Council, Ms Bolton said the aim was to see these children continue on in a sport or passion of their choice, with theatre and music increasing in popularity. Greg Christensen from Noosa Pirates states “This program makes a difference because it helps those most in need with that extra bit of financial assistance to get them, and keep them, playing. Helping out with fees or gear, keeps kids active and part of a club and sporting family which is more than just footy.” For anyone who would like to be involved in the program, as either a participant or an organisation, please contact Sandy’s office on 07 5391-3100.

Cooroy Genealogy Many of us in Australia have taken a DNA test to find out who we really are, who we belong to - in fact last year in the US alone, 12 million DNA kits were sold and in total 26m people have taken a test. In many cases, people have discovered their parent is not their parent. It can be fun to find out where you come from but there are risks that can change your life. Brisbane Specialist, Dr Michael Gattas trained as a Paediatrician at the Mater Hospital before completing further training in Genetics. He has a particular interest in familial cancers and has a great deal of experience in testing for genetic disorders. This includes DNA and chromosome tests, including chromosome microarray analysis. At 10am on Saturday July 27th in the CooroyNoosa Genealogical Group’s Heritage Centre, 17 Emerald St Cooroy, Dr Gattas will be the special guest speaker explaining the use of DNA testing in treating his patients and how next generation sequencing technology has entered clinical practice. A Heartfelt Thank You A very special Cooroy man has been supporting The Kindness Club since we began. We would like to tell you about his generosity and express our heartfelt appreciation to this very kind man. Our kind benefactor, known only to The Kindness Club as “Phil”, has donated over $1000 to our projects since December 2014. He hasn’t wanted recognition and has remained anonymous to the children all this time. Phil may support us from afar but he is a very important part of our club. The children are touched by his generosity and have experienced firsthand the gift of giving without expecting anything in return. Many of our Kindness Club projects have only been possible because of Phil’s generous donations, and include: funding our shopping trip for the Cooroy RSL Christmas Sleigh, gift hampers for our Emergency

dining & entertainment Joy of the Journey exhibition

The BRAG Trade Artist Group is pleased to present Joy of the Journey, an eclectic group exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory Art Centre, curated by Alicia Sharples. The exhibition will run from 26 July to 3 September 2019, with a formal opening at 6pm on Friday 26 July by Tony Wellington, Mayor of the Noosa Regional Council. The BRAG Trade is a collective of early career artists with common links through volunteering at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) with this exhibition featuring 5 artists - Kevin Aldcroft, Gabrielle McDonald, Paul Perry, Patricia Sheppard and Raymon Singleton. This exhibition is the largest body of work the artists have presented in one place ... examining the joy of the journey: • the joy of creating • the joy of each artistic journey • the joy of travel expressed visually, and • the joy of where the resulting artwork may take the viewer. The exhibition will explore the artists’ diverse relationships with forms, themes and techniques. Many of the works are visually inspired pieces with unconventional painting techniques, dimensional drawings and multi-patterned pieces. Shapes and lines are driving forces. For the majority of the artists colour is also important as it takes center stage, showing versatility, skill and piquing interest. For example Patricia Sheppard’s take on the Australian bush and landscapes intensely focuses on movement and the visual play of paint ... with her use of modern colours rather than the normal traditional palette. Gabrielle McDonald follows no rules with colour and moves across the boundaries of abstrac-

tion and realism, packing powerful bold punches with her work through the use of acrylics, oil bars and pens, adding drips, bold marks and overdrawings. Raymon Singleton indulges his love of the ocean. His patterns and shapes carefully formed on recycled timber, reflecting his passion for nature. Kevin Aldcroft explores the relationships of the planets and space in a different realm and has his own unique series of “cat” inspired hand drawings. Paul Perry’s diverse artistic practice explores the relationships of material and message; large scale paintings, mosaics, as well as chainsaw hewn logs salvaged from the aftermath of the 2013 Bundaberg floods. This exhibition sees the individual journeys of the artists momentarily converge and hopefully, creates a destination that evokes joy, raises possibilities and challenges others. The Joy of the Journey runs until 3 September 2019.

health Four tips for reducing knee pain

COOROY RAG

Knee pain comes in many forms with many different causes. While treatment for every person and condition will be different in each case, here are a few tips that may help to reduce knee pain throughout the day. 1. Choose supportive footwear One of the biggest culprits for ongoing knee pain is wearing unsupportive or high-heeled shoes to work. High heels often lead to tight calves and altered gait patterns, while unsupportive shoes can allow rolling in of the ankles, which can, in turn, place extra stress on the knee joints. Having an assessment with your physiotherapist to see how your shoes might be affecting your knee pain is a worthwhile investment. 2. Adjust your sleeping position While most of the time, our knees get a welldeserved rest during the nighttime hours, there are a few sleeping positions that can place additional stress on the knees. Lying on your side with bent knees can place tension on the outer thigh muscles and also the knee joint itself. Try to keep your knees straightened to at least 30 degrees and if you sleep on your side, place a pillow underneath the top knee to reduce stress on the joint. Alternatively, if you sleep on your back it may be helpful to place a pillow under your knees so that they rest in a slightly bent position, to unload

the joint. Try experimenting with different pillow arrangements to see which combination works best for you. 3. Avoid sitting or resting too much When knee pain strikes, your first instinct is probably to get off your feet and stop exercising. The truth is that our knees, like all our joints, are designed for movement and regular exercise helps to keep them healthy. If you are having pain with high impact activities such as running, try switching to swimming and cycling before stopping exercise altogether. Resting in a sitting position for prolonged periods can also place excess stress over the knee cap and knee joint. When sitting for long periods, try to stretch your legs out ahead of you and avoid crossing your legs. 4. Seek physiotherapy treatment Many of us see putting up with pain as a sign of strength however, a small niggle that is easily treatable can turn into a larger problem if left over time. This may seem like an obvious point, yet the first step to recovery is often just seeking treatment. The physiotherapists at Hinteractive Physio are happy to discuss your condition with you and share their tips to help you stay pain-free. Hinteractive Physio has recently relocated to 7 Garnet Street Cooroy (2 doors down from our old location). Phone 5442 5556.

Resolving inflammation Did you know that half of the Australian population lives with a chronic disease? Chronic inflammatory diseases have reached epidemic levels in many countries; they can occur throughout the body and affect all body systems. You may be currently managing one of these conditions, such as asthma and allergies, obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, or cancer. The good news is that by resolving the inflammation that underlies these conditions, you may experience reduction in symptoms or reduce the risk of these conditions occurring. Dietitian and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Inflammation is a protection mechanism; the body’s natural and healthy response to injury or threat. When the body is exposed to an injury, microbe or tissue damage, these stimuli will call the inflammatory ‘troops’ to the area to help address the issue. Inflammation will prevent further injury by causing: swelling, which immobilises the area to prevent further damage; pain, which reminds the brain to protect the area and forces the body to stop and rest; and redness, which increases blood flow to the area to aid healing. In small amounts and for a short term period, inflammation is a beneficial process that prevents further injury and induces the healing process. However, when this process fails to resolve, the ongoing presence of pain, redness and swelling creates new problems; the development of chronic inflammatory disease. The body is very effective at switching inflammation ‘on’, but how does it switch it ‘off’? It does this by creating specific messenger cells

called Specialised Pro-Resolving Mediators (SPMs) which migrate to the inflammation source in the body and help turn off or resolve the inflammatory process. SPMs are made from omega3 essential fatty acids, mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), obtained from fish oil. Unfortunately, during chronic inflammation states, your body’s ability to produce these SPMs is compromised, which leaves the inflammation switch in the ‘on’ position, leading to chronic pain and other symptoms. While derived from fish oil, SPMs have unique properties that differ from those of fish oil. Fish oil is the perfect first line of defence when it comes to combating inflammation generally, especially if dietary intake is inadequate or if there is an increased demand (e.g. pregnancy). SPMs may be considered the second line of defence and have a key role in resolving existing chronic inflammation. As they have complementary actions, there is benefit in taking both fish oil and SPMs together – fish oils can prevent new inflammation from occurring while SPMs resolve existing inflammation; making it perfect for targeting the chronic disease conditions mentioned above. If you are stuck in the cycle of chronic inflammation with recurring pain and symptoms consider SPMs. These and other natural medicines can help resolve the underlying inflammation and support your body’s ability to heal, to provide you with greater relief. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. The way you feel while you’re awake depends in part on what happens while you’re sleeping. During sleep your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Sleep also plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you’re sleep deficient you may have trouble fighting common infections. Medications and herbs from the pharmacy are useful in aiding sleep, but it is important to also ensure you are practising good sleep

principles DAILY to make certain you are giving yourself the best quality sleep possible. Here are some tips for those of you who might be having difficulty in the sleep department: Reduce your caffeine intake - do not have any food, medicines, or drinks that contain caffeine or other stimulants after midday or for six hours before bedtime. Reduce or quit smoking; nicotine is a stimulant. Reduce your alcohol intake or at least avoid alcohol within six hours of bedtime. Do not have a heavy meal just before bedtime Do not do any strenuous exercise within four hours of bedtime (but exercising earlier in the day is helpful). Exercise that involves relaxation or meditation (eg., yoga) may be useful close to bedtime. The bedroom should be a quiet, relaxing place to sleep Earplugs and eye shades may be useful if you are sleeping with a snoring or wakeful partner. Make sure the bedroom is dark with good curtains to stop early morning sunlight. Mood and atmosphere - try to relax and wind down with a routine before going to bed Do not do anything that is mentally demanding within 90 minutes of going to bed, such as studying. Go to bed when sleepy/tired. If you cannot get off to sleep after 20-30 minutes then get up. If you can, go into another room and do something else such as reading or watching TV rather than brooding in bed. Go back to bed when sleepy. You can repeat this as often as necessary until you are asleep. See your local LiveLife Pharmacy for more information.

It was after this period she experienced first hand how unresolved grief and trauma can manifest into physical illness and it was through her love of complementary, alternate and energy medicine that she effectively managed and recovered from several illnesses including Ross River fever and fibromyalgia. As a result of her search and due to her love of psychology Natalie completed her Diploma in Modern Psychology to both help heal herself and to also learn the processes of Modern Hypnotherapy, Neurolinguistic Programming( NLP ) and Life/Success Coaching so she could help others. “After experiencing such positive changes for myself I know first hand how such simple and easy techniques can make powerful and long lasting changes in your life and I can’t wait to assist others to improve their quality of life,” says Natalie. “Modern Hypnotherapy is an effective and rapid modality which allows clients to experience their

U6s - started the new round with real enthusiasm. There was no stopping them this morning coming up against Brothers and Saints. Our team passed, defended and scored tries like a well-oiled machine. Jax was on target with his defence, Nya showed skill in attack, Henry was precise with his passing and ran the ball up, Nixon showed speed and found gaps and Owen was presented the player of the day for great teamwork. Keep up the great work Dragons!! U10 - After the holiday break, the U10 Dragons met the Swans at Maroochydore and burst off the blocks with a stellar display of team rugby. There were some very impressive tackles being made, however most of the game was spent in attack – and the score board certainly reflected that. Coaches and supporters were delighted with the way the boys played and carried skills from two hard training sessions into the game. It was the best the team has performed, and we look forward to seeing another strong game next weekend. Jack took home Man of the Match and Will S was awarded Most Improved.

Softballer seeks help to realise World Cup dream A Noosa softballer who helped a Queensland team win a national title last weekend is now desperately seeking help from others to get to the US, where she will play for Australia in a World Cup. Shinai Gibbins, 18, was a pitcher in the Queensland Women’s U23 softball team that was undefeated at the Australian championships in Redlands, near Brisbane. Shinai, a Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Junior Sports Star of the Month, is now preparing to join the Australian Under 19 women’s team which will tour the US for three weeks in August. But she still needs about $3000 to get there and is desperately seeking donations or sponsorship. The entire tour and lead-up are costing Shinai and her family about $12,000. “It’s been hard work raising the money but it’s a dream come true,” Shinai said. Anyone who would like to help Shinai can donate at Peggy Sue’s Diner or call the diner on 5447 0027.

sport Mother of two wins historic 160km endurance ride

COOROY RAG

Local endurance rider Kaylea Maher got to fulfil her dream of holding up the most coveted prize in the sport of endurance riding ¯ the Tom Quilty Gold Cup ¯ when she crossed the line on Saturday ahead of 298 other riders from across Australia and abroad in the iconic 160km endurance race. Ms Maher completed the 160km ride, which was hosted at the Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex in Imbil Queensland, in ten hours and eight minutes after setting off on the ultimate endurance challenge at midnight on Friday night. The mother of two said

while she was hopeful of taking out the win, there were so many factors that influenced the end result. “Every ride you just take as it comes, as you never know what the end result is going to be,” said Ms Maher. “You always have to have hope in your horse and believe in your horse, and that’s what we did. We believed in each other and we worked through all our challenges and he came home really strong. I’m really happy with his achievement.” “Credit goes to the people at home in our stable, they do a fantastic job of

looking after him and yes, it’s a lot of hours and a lot of time; a lot of tears and sweat that go into getting a horse to the condition they need to be in to perform on the day. And that’s what we’ve seen, the hard work’s definitely paid off and I want to thank everyone who’s helped me get here. “It doesn’t matter if you’re at home or away, the competition is still there but to actually pull it off on home ground with the support from all my family, my friends and my team, I guess that’s where it feels good to have this win on home ground.”

Ms Maher also gave credit to her horse, Matta Mia Dimari, a locally bred Arabian with a feisty spirit. “The first time I saw this horse I had a connection with him and I always believed from the first time I rode him, that he could take home the Gold Cup,” said Ms Maher. “I worked with him from day one on our farm and I had the goal set in my mind that I was going to work towards getting him ready for this 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup.” Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club hosted the ride and President Kim Moir said she was delighted that a local rider took home the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, especially a success story like Kaylea Maher. “Kaylea has had an impressive endurance record having completed 122 official rides covering over 11,600km to this point, as well as taking home the lightweight title at the Tom Quilty Gold Cup three times in the seven years she has competed,” Ms Moir said. “She’s been riding since she was a young girl and now dedicates her time to training endurance horses. “The ride was very suc-

Cooroy 8-ballers hit the felt in the ‘Best of the West’ competition in Ipswich this month. Team 1 A/B Grade Frank, Shaun, Jase, John, Locky and Liam all played extremely well and ended up landing themselves a spot in the top 2 which put them into the grand final against Ipswich. After a nail biting round it came down to a draw. Five players were picked from each team to play off, race to 3. Unfortunately Cooroy went down 3-0 but definitely not without a fight. In the end they were the A/B grade runners up. Team 2 was B/C Grade - Bec, Nathan, Stewart, Marcus, Lester and Susan who all played pretty solid games having some wins, losses and draws, unfortunately they didn’t make the top 2, but ended up 3rd overall out of 6 associations. Congratulations to all who participated.

cessful with exceptional conditions . “There were riders aged from 12 to 77 and they all had from midnight on Friday until midnight last night to complete the ride.” “There is great prestige associated with completing the ride, hence the tagline: To complete is to win; and every rider out there was aiming to complete the 160km track within the 24hour deadline to collect their Quilty buckle. This year 194 buckles were presented to riders who completed the ride with the longest rider out on the course for 20 hours and 53 minutes.” Second place went to Jamie Green from Brisbane and third place to Paul Bidei from France who both rode in the middleweight division. Jolene Cole from NSW took out the heavyweight division while her 13-yearold daughter Emma was the first junior. In the lightweight division Emma Dimech from Table Top, NSW was the top of the leader board while joint second went to Nikki Scott from Imbil and Floor Braunius from the Netherlands who rode a horse from Marburg, Queensland.
