Bendigo commits to King of the Mountain for three years

Smiles all round in Stan Topper Park, Pomona as the new sponsorship deal for King of the Mountain is celebrated! - June 2013 THE major sponsor of the Pomona King of the Mountain festival, Bendigo Bank has announced a new three year pledge to Australia’s most gruelling and historic

mountain race. Through its Cooroy Community Bank branch, the branch’s parent company, Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd has

committed $6,000 to the staging of the event in 2013 and the same amount in 2014 and 2015 - an $18,000 commitment to an iconic event about to celebrate its 35th running.

A delighted Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said as locals the branch recognises how important an event this is for Pomona.

“It’s precisely what our Community Bank is about. This is about banking profits going back into our community and it’s because of the support locals’ show us that we can announce sponsorships as important as this one,” Geoff said. “Pomona King of the Mountain remains one of the best opportunities for our community to get together in the Noosa hinterland. Who would have thought a simple bet in a pub in 1958 would see us all here in 2013 preparing to cheer on amazing athletes and celebrate hard working volunteers - particularly the Pomona Lions Club, on July 28? We’ve been proud to support the event for the past three years and we’re delighted to announce our new commitment here today,” Geoff added. Pomona King of the Mountain chairperson, Jim Austin said the committee is overthe-moon to have a three year commitment from the Community Bank. “All members of the King of the Mountain committee are very excited about having Bendigo Bank on board for another three years. As a committee, we’re proud to say the race itself is self funding but the festival surrounding the race is getting bigger each year and to have a Com-

munity Bank supporting something so important to this community is just terrific,” The 35h Pomona King of the Mountain Festival on July 28 is a free fun day out for the whole family with the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash, Nestlé Family Fun Run, Cooroy Rag Tug of War, school relays, market stalls, food, entertainment, live music, rides and much, much more. The annual Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the CooroyPomona Lions Club, proudly sponsored by Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Sunshine Coast Council, IGA Pomona, Raine and Horne Pomona, Nestlé, Cooroy Rag, Canesaid Pty Ltd, Tourism Noosa, Zinc 96.1, Sunshine Unicycles, Queensland Media Print, Firefly Solutions, Inn the Foothills, Noosa Avalon Farm Cottages, Noosa Luxury B&B Alaya Verde Cottages, North Coast Law, Noosa & District Landcare, Pomona Post Office, Pomona Service Centre, Cooroora Screens and Blinds, Noosa Trophy Centre, Cooroora Taxation, Cathy Tapper Zumba, The Boutique Room and Pages Furniture.

Australian Business Week means business NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) has now successfully hosted Australian Business Week for the tenth straight year and their appetite for the program hasn’t waned. Australian Business Week (ABW) offers students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. In an exciting one

week intensive program, students experienced what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. They worked as part of a team managing their own business. This year students ran a hotel simulation business and with the help of a business and teacher mentor discovered the variety of

skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century. Over the week students performed tasks in teams ranging from forming a company, assigning roles and responsibilities in the company and reviewing key business areas. They had to make decisions about price, product, their target market,

staffing and training. This year’s 17 teams also developed a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team prepared a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact

on their company’s performance and delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It made for a full week but left each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. This year, the team named

Australian Business Week means business From Page 1 The winning team’s appointed CEO, Summer Johnson said the ABW experience had not only benefited the Sanctum team but all 17 teams that took part. “We’ve learnt so many valuable lessons this week - how to work together and consider everyone’s opinions. We were thrilled to have been given this opportunity to develop our skills in business management even though most of us haven’t had business studies as a course. We’re especially thankful to our mentors, Sandy and John who gave their time to guide us and advise us in various aspects in hotel management.” Without the support of parents, students and teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it’s become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the

program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Community Bank. Having just completed sponsoring ABW for another year, Cooroy branch manager Geoff Edwards said the Community Bank is proud to continue its association with the week long program in 2014. “This is our sixth year as the major sponsor of ABW and the relationship gets stronger as we become more involved in each facet of it. The mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their endless energies and talents. One of our Community Bank board directors, Fred Broomhall was also on hand to assist during the week of mentoring

De-amalgamation information night A PUBLIC meeting is being held in Cooroy to provide an update about the de-amalgamation process and the progress to date. Transfer Manager, Peter Franks will be in attendance to give a presentation and answer any questions. The meeting will be at the Cooroy Bowls Club in Opal Street on Tuesday 9 July commencing at 5.45pm. The meeting is hosted by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and is open to the general public. “The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has had a few queries about the de-amalgamation process, so we thought it was timely to have Peter Franks attend a public meeting. For the first half hour we will have some informal networking and mingling around the bar. Mr Franks will speak from 6.15pm and we will end the evening with a few updates about other local topics,” explained Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. The Cooroy Bowls Club bar will be open for refreshments and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce members will receive their first drink for free. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce can be contacted via email at info@cooroy.com.au

Summer Johnson holds the ABW Grand Champions Trophy with her Sanctum team mates. Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank and NDSHS principal Chris Roff and we’re both delighted to add this to our financial assistance to the program. “This year ABW was a resounding success and a credit to its coordinator Alison Rexa and school Principal Chris Roff. I encourage

any local business owner who hasn’t been involved in to ABW to find out more about the program and get involved in 2014. Some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to

come,” Mr. Edwards added. If you would like to know more about ABW or how you can support the future of the program, contact the ABW program co-ordinator Alison Rexa at NDSHS on 5472 2234.

To East Timor from Cooroy with love LIFE and learning will soon be made a lot easier for hundreds of children in East Timor. Just before heading off on holidays, Cooroy State School students assembled hundreds of educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu - a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 of primary school age. With the help of Bendigo Community Bank and Rotary Club, Sao Miguel was identified 6 years ago as a community school with no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. Each parcel donated by the kids from Cooroy State School is a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student to the child opening it at the other end. What’s more impressive is that the hundreds of shoe boxes from Cooroy will join

(l-r) Paul Bevan, Jenny Easey, Geoff Edwards and Ett Ison are joined by hundreds of Cooroy State School students and ther shoe boxes (1) one thousand others from Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 1,200 kids. Cooroy State School principal Jenny Easey said this is the fourth year they had chosen to support this project. “Partnering with our local Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Rotary, we’re delighted to

continue and annual program that started in 2008. Then, 500 shoe boxes made their way to Timor in time for Christmas, and now we’re looking at sending 1,200 shoe boxes over to an area that wants for an education we often take for granted here on the coast. It’s a great team effort across 3 coast schools and Bendigo Bank and Rotary have just been amazing to

work with. It’s great for all students to get involved and to give something back. Our student leaders have been actively involved with the project this year and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. It’s going to be great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families too. Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting

these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” she said. Cooroy Community Bank manager, Geoff Edwards says he feels the project continues to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones.”

At last approaches the end of this political cycle, One that has been sadly bitter and spiteful, Governing has taken a lowly place in a sea of personal abuse, Unacceptable behaviour for which there’s no excuse. Allegations of misogyny, futile points of order, The Speaker’s time is spent, in quelling noisy disorder, A lack of respect, no attempt at decorum, Behaviour which has no place in a legislative forum. It has been said, an Opposition should everything oppose, And not waste time on things they should propose, The Opposition seems to follow this, to the very letter, Until at times, it becomes a personal vendetta. Common sense in some debates, is often hard to find, Suggestions are greeted with an open mouth, instead of an open mind, They orate about the country’s good, the joys of our democracy, But never discuss the size of our bloated bureaucracy. But we’re now about to suffer, an electioneering campaign, Let’s hope that we can survive the relentless oral pain, There will be little chance of gaining some release, The Off switch on the TV, will bring quiet and sweet peace. Labor has a new leader now, after some political drama, Perhaps everyone will settle down, and the atmosphere much calmer. Let us pray the new Government, no matter who they are, Will realise the bad behaviour has really gone too far, The public do not like it, they are frankly sick to death, They’re expecting vast improvement, but I wouldn’t hold my breath!!

Cooroy’s Friends of Mill Place really do make a difference SUNSHINE Coast Council’s award-winning Cooroy Library and Butter Factory Arts Centre took a moment on 18 May to celebrate with the Friends of Mill Place another successful year and to acknowledge the dedication of their volunteers. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said the Friends of Mill Place are a very dedicated and passionate team who really make a difference to the Precinct. “In May we saw the volunteers turn out in force to help with the Cooroy Fusion Festival,” he said. “At the Fusion Festival they were very noticeable in their orange festival shirts. The Festival committee acknowledged their contributions with a certificate of appreciation. “On 18 May, in celebration of National Volunteers Week, the Friends of Mill Place gathered to celebrate two of their members, Margaret McLean and Dawn Phillip. I am informed these two wonderful Cooroy ladies have committed a great deal of time and energy to the Precinct.”

Councillor Wellington said training is almost complete for the new volunteer Literacy Tutors and the volunteer involvement at the Butter Factory Arts Centre. “The new volunteers will be a welcome addition to the team who support this important section of Cooroy - a Precinct that provides so much to the community,” he said. “And if you haven’t had the chance to visit the Butter Factory Arts Centre’s latest exhibition Journey into Mourning: Paul Cadzow it concludes on July 13, as does the Noosa District State High School Senior Art students’ Body of Work exploring the concept Plethora. “Don’t forget to pencil in the diary the next free Get Creative family-orientated workshop at the Butter Factory Arts Centre on 20 July from 10am to noon.” Visit council’s library website for opening hours of the Cooroy Library and council’s gallery website for information about the current exhibition public programs and events.

news Ticking all the boxes on your end of financial year checklist Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

WELL, June 30 and the end of financial year has now come and gone. In some industries (not all) that date can be more important than others. What is particularly relevant to many people in relation to the end of the financial year is that is presents an opportunity to lodge a new tax return. It can be the opportunity to receive back from the government some of our ‘hard earned dollars’ paid in tax. Many people choose to see an accountant. This is great, because they are generally qualified and have the necessary knowledge to assist you. There are some things you can do to prepare for your accountant. Alternatively if you choose not to see an accountant there are several things you should consider when preparing to lodge your tax return.

Some of these include: 1. Obtain your Group Certificate for the past financial year. Remember that if you have more than one employer you will need one for each of them. 2. Visit your bank or collate your bank statements to determine interest you may have earned over the financial year. 3. If you have an investment loan for perhaps a property or shares you will need to have a statement to show how much interest you paid for the year. Your bank can help with this one also. 4. If you received income from that property or share portfolio you will need details of what was earned during the year. 5. Additionally in relation to an investment property, have you incurred any expenses throughout the year such as repairs on that property? Be mindful

that the Tax Office can be very strict regarding these types of expenses. You will need receipts. 6. You may have incurred expenses over the year that is specifically related to your job. This could be a compulsory uniform, or tools required to complete your work. Dig out your receipts for those because you may be able to claim them when completing your tax return. Note however that different jobs fall into different categories and this can mean that some expenses are claimable in one industry but not in another. The Australian Tax Office has a great website that lists the different work related expenses. 7. Have you made any charitable donations over the last year? If so, find the receipt because you may be able to claim it. These ideas are just a few to consider. There are likely to be more and

your accountant can provide you with a more extensive list. The important thing to remember is that generally you will need receipts or statements of items applicable to your tax return. Some of these can be obtained from your local bank, others you will need to seek elsewhere. Happy New Financial Year everyone! If you would like to know more about any of our services, please feel free to contact me or any of the team on 5447 7131.

Wellington’s Way

news Cooroy to Curra upgrade fast-tracked

MP Peter Wellington IDENTIFICATION Laws: Back in 2011, I introduced an Identification Law Amendment Bill into Parliament, as I was appalled when a judge overturned the jail sentence of a woman because the judge believed the identity of the woman could not be verified, as the woman was wearing a burqa. My decision to introduce the Bill had nothing to do with religion and religious beliefs; it was purely based on respect. Respect for our laws, respect for our Police and respect for our justice system. I did not want this Bill to be about religion, so the wording was chosen to make sure that it was limited to facial cover. . Recent events have shown that there is a need for the laws to be changed and I have given notice to the Attorney General, if he is not prepared to take action on this matter I will reintroduce my Bill for consideration when Parliament resumes in August. Cooroy to Curra Update: The Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently advised that work on the next section of the Bruce Highway upgrade between Cooroy and Curra will commence within the next few weeks. Funding for the project has been fast-tracked by the Australian and Queensland govern-

ments under a 50/50 funding arrangement. The next stage to be delivered is the realignment of an 850m section of Black Mountain Range Road and construction of a new overpass to maintain the connection to the existing highway. Full details on the project are available on my web site. www.peterwellingtonmp.com Unsecured Loads Laws: As a result of my questions to the Minister for transport and Main Roads in relation to what is required to secure loads in utes and station wagons, the Minister has advised that the Department of Transport web site will be upgraded to include tips on appropriate load restraint and examples of how to restrain commonly transported loads, such as garden refuse, furniture, white goods, dogs and boats. Emergency Vehicles back on track for Obi Obi: As a result of my representation to the Department of Transport and Main Roads and approaches by the Queensland Ambulance Service, the Department has agreed to remove the rocky overhang that is making it difficult for Emergency vehicles travelling through this winding and narrow section of Obi Obi Road.

THE rebuilding of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra has reached another major milestone, with construction work now underway on straightening and duplicating Section A. Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister joined local State MP David Gibson onsite for the ground-breaking ceremony marking the official start of work on the $790 million upgrade of the Highway from south of the Cooroy Southern Interchange to Sankeys Road. “Just months after completing the upgrade of Section B on time and under budget, we have today taken the next step towards our ultimate goal of duplicating the entire stretch of highway between Cooroy and Curra,” said Mr Albanese. “At a cost of more than three quarters of a billion dollars, this is a big project which will put almost 1,600 Queenslanders to work, both directly and indirectly, rebuilding yet another vital section of the Bruce. Indeed, it is part of the record capital works program now been rolling out along the entire length of the road. Mr Gibson said once completed in 2016, the improvements made will deliver smoother and safer driving conditions for the 20,000 motorists and truck drivers who use this section of highway every day. “I’m extremely pleased this upgrade has been fast-tracked,” said Mr Gibson. “As well as duplicating some 13 kilometres of highway, the project will also upgrade the existing Cooroy Southern Interchange and build a new one north of Cooroy. “New bridges over Six Mile and Skyring creeks, along with a new overpass connecting Black Mountain Range Road to the existing highway, will also be erected. “These works are vital as this stretch of road has seen 14 fatalities over a 10 year period.”

Lake Macdonald Flexilink trial service extended THE Flexilink transport trial operating between Lake Macdonald and Cooroy has been extended until 31 August giving residents a further two months to use the service. Funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s Public Transport Levy, the new service started as a three-month trial in April to make it easier for residents to access public transport. Transport Strategy

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the trial extension from 30 June until the end of August meant more passenger data could be collected to assess local demand for the service. “Flexilink trial services aim to provide affordable and accessible public transport to communities with fewer alternative transport options,” he said. “The extension of the

trial will mean council can gather information on passenger numbers over a five month period and determine whether it’s viable for this service to continue as a sustainable travel option.” Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington encouraged residents to use the service to keep it running. “The trial gives local residents better access to TransLink bus routes

news Raising funds for Endeavour Rally

COOROY RAG

Len Clark’s ‘Warzard of Oz’ rally car A FANTASTIC night was enjoyed by all on Sat 22nd June at the Cooroy RSL raising funds for Len Clark & Peter McLean in their 3,500km quest to Port Douglas in the Endeavour Rally. Over $2500 was raised on the night as part of the $5000 needed for their entry fee, fuel and supplies along the way. And as to where they will be sleeping on their 8 night journey? “In the paddock” was Lens response. Rug up boys - no doubt it will be quite chilly in the great outdoors! They will be sending back pics of their journey so that everyone can check out their progress on the screens at the RSL. Peter, who doubles as the creator of unique furniture and features from carparts, outdid himself with the 1956 Holden EF Lounge valued at over $2000 which was raffled. Winner Chris Walters from Tinbeerwah was ecstatic as he had come especially in the hope of winning. Congratulations to Chris and to Trivia winners Knoweyedeers, The McBakers and the Trihards, and to those that hauled of a range of donated goodies in the multi draw raffle. The boys will be holding a sausage sizzle at Cooroy IGA and at Bunning’s over the next month so buy up big and help these boys to help the Endeavour Foundation. If you can help with a cash donation please call Len on 54476058

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management IF you’re starting to get an idea of the sort of retirement you’d like, a new financial year can be a welcome event to gather your thoughts, look into suitable strategies and open up conversations for advice and guidance. AMP research into retirement trends(1) indicates today’s retirees are trying to live life to the full. Whether it’s a tree change or a sea change, a Great Ocean Road trip or the cruise of a lifetime, retirees want to enjoy their independence for as long as possible. At the same time, they want to give back by playing an active role in their grandchildren’s lives or by getting involved in voluntary services to share their expertise with the community. Your finances need to be in shape to support your ideal retirement lifestyle, whatever that vision may be. This is a great time to plan for the financial year ahead and make sure you’re building your nest egg the smart way. The changing face of retirement It all used to be so different. Retirement was short and expectations about life in retirement were minimal. In 1960, the average Australian man retiring at age 65 could only expect to live another 12.5 years, while an Australian woman could expect to live another 15.7 years.(2) Fast forward to the present and the picture has changed drastically. With medical advances and healthier lifestyles, Australians are enjoying longer, more active retirements than ever. The latest figures suggest that a 65-year-old man can expect to live another 18.3 years on average, while a woman can expect to live another 21.5 years.(3) But our retirement incomes from super aren’t keeping up with these changes.

The latest AMP Retirement Adequacy Index(3) reveals that although super balances increased by 7% over the course of 2012, thanks to a rebound in the sharemarkets and salary increases, those Australians closest to retirement are putting less money into our super savings, with potentially negative consequences for their retirement dreams. Reduced contribution rates have seen projected retirement incomes from super for workers older than age 55 fall between 3% and 5% from the previous index (December 2011). Time for some resolutions Now may be a good time for you to think about setting some new ‘financial’ year resolutions to keep on track for the retirement you want. Here are a few ideas: - Make the most out of your super The superannuation regime has some incentives to boost your super savings and help you reach retirement in the best possible shape. - Make the most out of your investments The closer you get to retirement, the more you want to protect your nest egg. That’s only natural. But with interest rates currently on the way down, you could struggle to keep pace with inflation if all your savings are in defensive investments like term deposits. - Make sure you’re fully protected It’s also a good time to check your insurance. You can start by having a look at how much you’re earning and how many people depend on your income. (1) AMP customer segment research (November 2012) (2) Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. news Businesses partner with Reality Bites Festival REALITY Bites organisers will venture out of the library and into the community this year to present some of the program of this year’s festival in venues around town. “We are delighted to partner with local business this year and introduce our audience to some of Cooroy’s hidden treasures,” said SHWC secretary Vicky O’Brien. On Friday, July 26, High Tea-Licious will host an afternoon tea and talk with Kristy Chambers the author of “Get Well Soon!: My ‘un’Brilliant Career as a

Nurse”. Falling into the nursing profession, Kristy Chambers spent almost a decade working with a wide variety of people, ranging from drug addicts to cancer patients. Dark, humorous, honest, and compassionate, this memoir illustrates the incredible work nurses do and the many challenges they face. With a deep appreciation and overwhelming respect for the vivid humanity and humility of the nursing profession, Kristy pays tribute to the wonderfully brave people she met during her career. It is a rare, funny, and

truthful tale of dedication to duty by people who find themselves literally up to their elbows in all the detritus of bodily suffering. Her story is a side-splitting emotional roller coaster ride and leaves you feeling so much ‘better’ about life, death, love and the frustrations implicated in the human condition. It may not fix the health care crisis, but they say laughter is the best medicine! “If you are a nurse, carer or just a one-time patient, you won’t want to miss this afternoon tea and chat with Kristy. She captures the true

essence of the profession and she will make you laugh and cry as she takes you on her sometimes squeamish but always exhilarating and humorous roller coaster ride as a nurse.” said Vicky who is hosting the event. Seating is extremely limited and booking is essential. Then on Saturday, July 27, local success story, author and historian Judy Powell, who first pitched her idea for a book to an expert panel at the festival’s wildly popular pitching clinic a couple of years ago, returns this year to launch Love’s Obsession - a biography of Australian archaeologist Jim Stewart and his wife, Eve. She’ll be joined by guest authors and festival patrons at Fire & Ice to hear past festival director and author Annette Hughes do the honours and launch the book. The event is free entry. This year’s pro-

gram includes Anne Summers, Catherine Deveny, Jeff Sparrow, Mark Dapin and this year branches out into comedy and music, with a range of free events. “To have these great minds placed at your doorstep in Cooroy is just mind-blowing.” said Vicky, who joined the organising committee last year. It’s a weekend of talks and discussion that broadens your outlook and takes you away from the normalcy of every day living. We get this experience at half the cost of our city counterparts and I’m extremely grateful for this local opportunity to laugh and learn! I love it.” Workshops and small venue sessions sell out quickly so organisers urge patrons to get in early. Check out the program and book online www.realityliteraryfestival.org or in person at Annie’s Books, Peregian.

news Another solid year for Cooroy Chamber

COOROY RAG

AT the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s AGM this month, the achievements for the hinterland by Cooroy Chamber were outlined. “I’m proud to say that the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has had another year of solid achievements and that is due to the fantastic efforts of the individuals who selflessly volunteer their time for the benefit of our members and the broader community,” explained President, Danielle Taylor. The executive committee again worked tirelessly throughout the year – Durnford Dart (Vice President), Lynda Sandford (Treasurer), Jennifer Sadler (Secretary), Tania Stewart (Events), Shanna Moyes (Website), Lee Smith (Retail Strategy) and executive members Elona Bosboom, Nikki McDonald and Tracy Vecchio have all been invaluable. A thank you also went to Seb Vecchio who was the President at the beginning of the term before he stood down in October due to health reasons. The entire executive committee was reelected to stand again for another 12 months. “It is fantastic that the executive committee were re-elected to their positions as it ensures continuity and it also shows that members are happy with what has been achieved. As well as the executive committee, there are a host of volunteers that make the efforts of the Chamber such a success and we are lucky

to live in a community that works so well together to achieve great things,” said President Danielle Taylor. Some of the achievements included weekly newsletters to members; the Cooroy Envelope and the Top Cooroy Christmas Gift Ideas promotion which were both campaigns that promoted shopping locally; updating the Cooroy Pocket Guide which will be distributed next month; working with various levels of government across a wide range of issues such as juvenile crime, the railway overpass and RV parking to name a few; Dinner with the Mayor; the Christmas in Cooroy festival and decorating Cooroy with Christmas decorations; supporting local events; and the very popular Cooroy community website which gets over 26,000 visits per month. The Chamber also hosted the De-amalgamation Forum in February with Cr Russell Green and Mayor Mark Jamieson which had a huge turnout and great media coverage. Most recently the Chamber was asked to sit on the new Transfer Advisory Committee and appointed Danielle Taylor to the position ensuring that the hinterland community has a voice on this panel. police beat

with Sergeant Mal Scott BOTH the Cooroy State School in Elm Street and the Noosa and District High School in Tulip Street have been targeted in the last few weeks with bad behaviour and unlawful activity. The Primary school was broken into over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of June with the offenders thought to be juveniles due to evidence left behind at the scene. As with most break and enters at schools there was limited property stolen however the main impact upon the school was the damage caused by the offenders targeting various items of property within classrooms to maximise disruption amongst teachers and students. On the weekend of the 16th June Police were called to the Noosa District High School when neighbours of the school reported five youths harassing and intimidating livestock by chasing them around their paddocks. These livestock are kept on the campus as part of the school agriculture program and quickly become much loved pets of the students who tend and care for them so this type of behaviour is particularly concerning. The youths were apprehended by police and are currently being dealt with by the Child Protection Investigation Unit. I would ask that Cooroy residents who live close to our school keep an eye on the school grounds and report any persons seen on school grounds after hours and during school holidays. It is an offence against the Education Act for any person to be unlawfully on School premises and anyone found doing so will be prosecuted. Police have stepped up our patrols of the school grounds in an effort to stop the above behaviour. Police have also received complaints in regards kids aged in their early teens riding their bikes and skateboards on Forest Acres Drive north of the Lake Macdonald Drive intersection. Police have received several complaints that these children are endan-

gering themselves by playing around cars and not wearing helmets etc so if you are a parent of one these children please take some ownership of your kids’ safety and speak with them in regards finding a different location for their activities which does not involve close proximity to traffic. Police are patrolling the area and speaking with kids not wearing helmets etc so please assist us with dealing with this problem. The increased traffic enforcement on Cooroy Belli Creek Road is set to continue with several fines handed out to drivers crossing the double and single unbroken white lines. As mentioned in my previous report this action was brought about by several very serious traffic accidents so I ask that all motorists on our roads especially our hinterland roads which are often very narrow and winding to take extra care as police would much rather see good driving practises rather than have to write fines for people. Drugs continue to be a problem in the community especially with our younger people being supplied with cannabis. Since the beginning of the year we have been supplied with some very good information which has led to a number of drug suppliers being searched and evidence located which has then lead to a conviction in court. I encourage members of our community to report known and suspected drug users and dealers. It is an absolute fact that cannabis use amongst young people is strongly linking to mental health issues so for the sake of our youth please do not turn a blind eye to this type of behaviour. Information passed through Crime Stoppers (1800333000) is rewarded by a sizeable monetary payment where a conviction is obtained by police so if the incentive of doing the right thing by the community and keeping our kids safe is not reward enough then maybe $500 may be. All information supplied through Crime Stop-

pers can be supplied anonymously. The Cooroy Blue Light Disco services the entire Noosa Hinterland area which includes Cooroy, Carters Ridge, Forest Acres, Pomona, Kin Kin, Eumundi and Kenilworth. Since the beginning of the year we are only averaging 50 to 60 kids per disco so can I ask for parents support with bringing their kids to the disco. We have a Limited Edition Nintendo Wii and an Xbox 360 to give away as lucky door prizes in coming months so come along and have a chance to win these great prizes. Thanks must go to our new Branch Manager, Geoff Edwards and the staff of the Cooroy Bendigo Bank for donating to the disco which has enabled us to offer such great prizes.

Each rider will cover their own costs to participate in the ride, while also seeking to start a fundraising team and raise a minimum of $1,000 of sponsorship from friends, family and locals which organisers hope will raise over $100,000. Donations are fully tax deductible and go straight to assisting local young people in need. Scripture Union Queensland (SU Qld) has over 500 Chaplains working in around 600 Queensland state schools to provide spiritual and emotional support to more than 340,000 students, staff and parents. Chad Monroe, of Provision Wealth Management, founder of the Ride4Hope said the ride to be held on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of Au-

Cooroy Cub Scouts

THE Cooroy Cub Scouts had a great afternoon on Thursday 6th of June helping out Suellen Hodgson at the newly established Cooroy Community Gardens mulching gardens and learning how generate seedlings using jiffy pots. The afternoons’ activities were developed and led by Suellen Hodgson from the Cooroy Community Gardens Committee to support the ‘active citizenship’ component of Cub Scouts term program. The aim of Cub Scouts is to help young people to develop into active members of their local community by participating in a variety of scout and community based activities. Cubs are able to progress through to Scouts and then onto Venturer Scouts in their later teenage years. The Scouting movement of Australia offers young people a variety of opportunities to develop personal attributes of, resilience, active citizenship, leadership and self-confidence. Cubs and Scouts meet on a Thursday night and Venturers on Monday afternoons. Like to know more about Cooroy Scouts? gust would help expand the program and provide the Chaplains with better resources. “The financial support that Ride4Hope expects to generate will help Qld’s School Chaplains continue their vital work in our communities,” he said. “The Chaplains have built a lot of trust with the kids so it’s great they always have someone they can turn to with their problems.” School Chaplain at Noosa District State High, Shane Brigg, said that ‘Chappies’ play an important support role within schools. “Every young person longs for a role model. For many of the young people I come into contact with, Chaplaincy is often the first point of call for discovering a positive relationship with meaningful adults,”

he said. “It is an absolutely humbling privilege to be one of those people that students are happy to come and talk to. I work really hard at being a connector between students and helping them develop empowering links to others as well. Like the proactive support programs we are conducting where students get to meet with trained community volunteers to work through life issues together. ” “Chappy” Shane, who has been a youth worker for 25 years (a Chaplain for 17 years), said that the work he does assists the school community, students, and their families in a number of ways, including pastoral care and life skills development. “If a family has experienced a critical situation like the loss of a loved

one, we are there to help by simply having a chat, through practical acts like arranging for meals, and by linking them with others who can support them,” he said. “Then there are school activities which we get involved with such as camps, school community events, breakfast programs, mentoring, and lunchtime activities.” Jon Colley of Loan Wize is another local businessman who is participating in the Ride4Hope. “SU QLD is in the business of creating better futures – mainly through school chaplaincy. The Ride4Hope was developed to respond to genuine community need and to make a real difference in the lives of QLD young people,” Mr Colley said.

Mother inspires the community LOCAL author Siona Howard has recently self published a nurturing and beautiful coffee table style book full of positive life lessons and nature inspired photography. Siona now donates $4.00 from every book she sells to “Bravehearts Inc” who is Australia’s Leading Child Protection Advocate. Her goal is to raise $2000.00 for them by selling 500 books. Bravehearts are a brilliant non-profit organisation. They educate through school programs, they support parents, they provide counselling and also have a Crisis Help Line. They are a very rewarding cause to support and play a vital role in nurturing our kids. You can visit www.bravehearts.org.au for help and more information. Siona’s most significant purpose is to raise awareness and create a sense of empowerment to the community with regards to child protection, specifically child sexual assault. Siona was abused as a small child for several years by her seemingly loving Grandfather on her Mothers side. With no education about this topic, Siona’s uncomfortable confusion made it very hard for her to protect herself. Often

children know their abusers and they generally look to these people for guidance and re-assurance. It is these manipulative people who statistically rate as the highest offenders of child sexual assault. Siona also found it very difficult to find someone to listen to her and believe her. With two precious daughters of her own and a very supportive husband, Siona is now deeply passionate to embrace this topic. “We need to educate our children. We need to protect them. We need to listen to them. We need to be available to them. We need to believe them. We also need to educate parents. Prevention is so much easier than cure.” Siona said. The journey of writing has led Siona to one of the most rewarding places she has ever been. “I now have a goal, a purpose and a very clear understanding of how I can help the world”, she said. To read more about Siona or to purchase one of her incredible books, you can visit her website www.inspirationalsanctuary.com.au or Facebook page www.facebook.com/ inspirationalsanctuary

After a long fight with cancer, Leo passed away at Katie Rose Cottage surrounded by his loved ones. $2000 was raised for Katie Rose Cottage from donations in lieu of flowers at his funeral. He loved his home in Cooroy so much that a view from his deck was printed on his coffin.

IT was the tattooed form of a pregnant woman that caught the judges’ eye. The story Lucy Day was trying to tell through her sketch showed the potential creativity that Bruce Dahl and Pat Cale were looking for. So they awarded the inaugural Bush Haven Creativity Award to the Imbil Year 10 student at Mary Valley State College. Principal Jenny Kent was impressed with the offer of the privately funded award and welcomed the fact that the community was working to provide opportunities at the local school. Mr Dahl put up the $750 prize, which includes $500 worth of tuition by a local artist, $150 in materials and $100 cash for the student. It will be offered annually by Mary Valley Artslink for the next four years, and categories will be expanded to include a section for digital media. The award is just one of the suite of initiatives coming from the local Artslink organisation. “We wanted to encourage students by assisting them to improve their skills in creativity,” Mr Dahl said, “as well as helping the valley community appreciate their local talent. “The winners of this award may never become professional artists, but the point is to celebrate their creativity and give them the opportunity to explore it,” he said. “The award is linked to the school and local artists, so that the money stays in the community.” Both judges said Lucy’s drawing was highly creative and thought provoking,

Imbil back on map THE Member for Gympie, David Gibson MP has received confirmation that new directional signage to Imbil on the Bruce Highway has now been approved. After intense lobbying by Mr Gibson the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, the Hon Scott Emerson MP, has now reassessed the matter and requested that ‘Imbil’ be added to the two northbound signs at Ext 244 on the Bruce Highway. Mr Gibson said that this was a great outcome for the community of Imbil who have fought hard to have the signage changed. “Imbil has been through a lot recently and hopefully the new signage will encourage more visitors to this beautiful township,” Mr Gibson said. The Department of Transport and Main Roads have advised that they are currently in the process of ordering the amended signs which are expected to be manufactured and installed within the next two months. Mr Gibson thanked the residence of Imbil for their patience in this matter and is pleased that the signage is now resolved.

ACCLAIMED chef Matt Golinski won everyone’s hearts as well as their palates on Sunday at the Mary Valley Country Flavours event in Imbil. Rainy weather did not keep the throngs of people away from the enticing aromas that drifted from Imbil’s Centre Park where Mr Golinski cooked up a storm with local Mary Valley produce. The event was part of the Mary Valley Coun-

try Flavours project, created by Mary Valley Inc to link the tourism, hospitality and agriculture sectors through developing and marketing product under the new “Flavours” brand. cal flavours. The chef’s easy going nature made the day a great success and he was happy to chat with the inquisitive crowd during his demonstrations, sharing some of his culinary se-

crets. He cooked three sessions using local beef, pork and chicken with fruit and vegetables from accredited Mary Valley Country Flavours producers’ stalls at the markets. “It was awesome to work with a community who are so passionate about their local food and to be part of such a great event” said Matt who also personally launched the Farm to Business Trade Directory 2013 on behalf of the project. The directory promotes the “get local” campaign and lists producers as well as produce categories, markets, wholesalers, distributors and retailers of Flavours products and food service databases. Mr Golinski then went shopping at the accredited producers’ market stalls for five ingredients

to create mystery bags, which he then presented to three participants in the local Ready, Steady, Cook session. Imbil Bowls Club chef Rainer Kruse and cooks Nicky Watson and Debbie Williams were asked to create a meal in 30 minutes and impressed everyone with their culinary skills. Mr Golinski wrapped up the day with his final demonstration where he also used the same five ingredients to cook yet another creation, saying that the demonstration showed the variety of dishes that could come from wonderful fresh and local produce. Project coordinator Lesa Bell said the Flavours accreditation process ensured buyers and retailers that they were purchasing genuine local Mary Valley Product.

HARDWARE TRUE VALUE HOT DEALS

Solo Exhibition - Noreen Flood

CONNECTIONS - Environment and Humanity Local award winning artist, Noreen Flood, will be exhibiting at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery to 25 July. The diverse ecology of the sunshine coast inspires the artist to create mainly mixed medium contemporary and expressionistic work using line as a means of

conveying feelings. In the landscape works; practical methods of realization are designed on the canvas/paper – each piece influenced by the inner soul and visual memory. Using many stages from freely expressed to controlled and focused; thus designing the landscape. Abstracts are created using drawings from na-

ture/life drawing – torn, reconstructed and worked into or reproduced on canvas. Influenced by Cezanne who ‘presented features of the landscape in an intensified and perhaps reduced form, so the result was abstraction – but this was no fantasy: It was what the painter actually sensed and felt; it was reality’. Noreen will be at the Gallery on Saturdays 10:00 - 12:00 during her exhibition. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet the artist and discuss her work. Pomona Railway Station Gallery is located at 10 Station St. Pomona. The Gallery is open weekdays 10:00 to 4:00; Saturday 10:00 - 2:00. Closed Sunday. Beautiful music rises above adversity MUSIC has risen above adversity in the lives of three composers whose works will be performed by the Pacific Chamber Players at the next concert in Cooran Memorial Hall on Saturday July 13, 2pm. Clara Schumann (wife of Robert Schumann) was a distinguished German pianist and composer. While performing and composing she gave birth to 8 children of whom two died; cared for two lots of grandchildren during tragic periods which punctuated her family life then promoted the music of her husband after his death in a mental asylum, herself dying aged 77 years. The beautiful voice of Sunshine Coast soprano, Elisabeth Wallis Gaedtke will be heard performing Robert Schumann’s ‘Frauenliebe

und Leben’ op 42. Translated, it means Womans’ Love and Life which is a cycle of 8 poems written by Adelbert von Chamisso telling the story of a womans’ love of a man After his marriage in 1840 Schumann embarked upon a great out-pouring of lieder and wrote 168 songs. Sadly, he admitted himself to a Mental Asylum after a failed suicide attempt. To complete the concert will be Smetana’s String Quartet no. 1 in E minor which was written when deafness was overcoming him. Tickets are available at the door. Prices are $25 adults; $20 concessions; $15 each for a group of 8 persons; $5 for students 15 years and under. As usual, a proportion of ticket sales will be donated to cancer research.

ON the 14th of July, French communities all over the world celebrate Bastille Day. The ‘Bastille ’was a medieval fortress and prison in Paris, that was stormed by troops on the 14th of July 1789, to release prisoners who were being tortured and slaughtered. This marked the end of the ancien regime and was a pivotal event to the beginning of the French Revolution. On the 14th July 1790 the Fete de la Federation was held to celebrate the establishment of the Constitutional Monarchy in France. Leading up to this day, the ‘Bastille’ was taken down, stone by stone, and the last stone was presented to the National Assembly. Every year since then, the 14 th of July, Bastille Day, has been a public Holiday in

France and a day for huge celebrations. At Fire and Ice Restaurant, 11 Maple Street Cooroy, we will celebrate Bastille Day on Saturday night 13th July with a “Classic” 3 Course French Menu For $40 per person. Bookings for 6 or more will include a bottle of “bubbly” We invite you to gather your friends and join in the celebrations by dressing in the style of the Moulin Rouge, Military uniform, Les Miserables or the tricolours of the French Flag, red, white and blue. health MEN! Do you have bladder control issues?

COOROY RAG

LAST week was World Continence week, which is an important time to address the large and still under-managed issue of incontinence. For women, there is a great deal of marketing from pantyliner companies etc about incontinence so there is some awareness of the issue in the community, despite this being an ineffective way to deal with the problem. For men, however, this issue is rarely discussed. And with increasing rates of prostate cancer surgeries over the last few decades, it is extremely important to address this issue in men. A lot of men find that they have incontinence issues after prostate procedures. This is because the prostate has a role in continence, and therefore when it is removed, incontinence can occur. The pelvic floor muscles and nerves may also be damaged. Most women are aware of the importance of performing pelvic floor exercises, but did you know that strong pelvic floor muscles are essential for men’s health as well? There are a number of issues for which pelvic floor muscle exercises can help, but let’s start with the one that is most likely to get your attention. Strong pelvic floor muscles can help overcome erectile dysfunction. Yes, you read correctly. Not only is it safe and easy, but pelvic floor exercises are much cheaper than medications

such as Viagra. Even if you don’t have erectile dysfunction, increasing your pelvic floor strength can increase the awareness of sexual sensations and therefore enjoyment. Pelvic floor muscles can also help men who find that they “dribble” after urinating and are strongly recommended for men after prostatectomy. Many men find that they have bladder control issues and erectile dysfunction post surgery, and both of these symptoms can be improved with pelvic floor exercises. It is not only surgery that damages or weakens these muscles. Chronic coughing, lifting of heavy loads or straining due to constipation can also result in a weak pelvic floor. So how do you fix the problem? Most men are able to perform their exercises correctly after basic instruction from a qualified therapist. If more help is required, there are DVD’s, muscle stimulation units and biofeedback which can be used as well. Like any problem, the sooner it is addressed, the easier it is to fix. So if you would like to know more, contact your health professional today. Craig and Rebecca Steele own and operate Hinteractive Physio in Cooroy. They can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Fan the flames of your digestive fire GET more energy, a better night’s sleep and even lose weight by keeping your digestion strong We can think of our Stomach like a pot bubbling away over a fire, this is our Digestive Fire. When the fire is strong, the food and drink that we put into our ‘pot’ gets easily converted into Qi (energy) and Blood and our digestive system and body function with ease. When this fire is weak, our body has a hard time digesting whatever is put into our ‘pot’ resulting in lowered energy, digestive imbalances, weight gain and sluggish metabolism. So what puts this Digestive Fire out? Consuming too many ‘cooling’ and ‘damp’ foods. Cooling foods weaken the heat of the fire and damp foods smother the fire. Now cooling foods in Chinese Medicine basically means too many foods that are cold or raw whereas damp foods are mostly dairy products, oily and highly processed food. Think cereal and oj for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, fish and chips for dinner and ice-cream for dessert. The fire gets dampened by having the first two meals of the day as cold meals, and then there is little energy to digest a big cooked dinner at the end of the day. This leads to a diminished Fire or a deficient digestive energy. Symptoms of weak digestion: nausea, poor appetite, bloating, overweight without overeating, or underweight and unable to gain weight, loose bowels, general weakness, fatigue, food sensitivities, nervous indigestion and haemorrhoids. When the digestive fire is weakened, anything we put into our ‘pot’ doesn’t get digested efficiently and takes much longer to be converted into Qi and Blood and therefore sits around in the Stomach and eventually creates Dampness within the body. Symptoms of Dampness can include Candida; phlegm producing coughs; painful joints leading to restricted movement and possibly numbness; swelling and oedema; a feeling of ‘heaviness’ in the body particularly the head; lack of appetite; bloating and diarrhoea. But it really doesn’t take much effort to tips the digestive odds in your favour. If you already have some of the symptoms listed above, then you want to make your food and drink as easy to digest as possible. This then gives the digestive ‘pot’ and fire a bit of a break whilst it regains its mojo. If you keep the food and drink as close in consistency and temperature to soup as possible, your digestion will thank you for it, and give you great rewards in return. By making simple changes to your daily routine, you will notice huge benefits to your overall wellbeing and your energy for the day will be more balanced and sustained. Fire creates fire, so by keeping your digestion strong and eating according to the seasons our body will repay the care by naturally correcting any minor imbalances when they arise. New fitness centre opens in Kauri Street

STUDIO 2 is a new fitness centre recently opened in Kauri St Cooroy offering a variety of fitness classes with a difference; the business is a combination of fitness classes and an espresso bar. The fitness studio offers Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Pump or bar classes, Fit4dance (which is a new dance/ barre based exercise program) and boot camp style circuits…..the espresso bar serves the finest award winning coffee roasted by Doonan’s Flying West Small Batch Roasters. The owners are Doonan locals who have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. They previously owned a Fitness Centre in Zimbabwe for 10 years and they have managed and worked in gyms in Noosa until recently deciding to combine their two loves – coffee and exercise classes…. “we are a fitness studio offering a variety of great classes with motivating music and experienced instructors .… together with exceptional coffee!” When asked why they chose Cooroy for their new venture they said “…because it’s a great little town with a relaxed atmosphere …we love group exercise classes because they have so much energy and the music is so moti-

vating – you don’t even feel like your exercising…and the espresso bar? well, everything goes better with great coffee and we are proud to be working with Flying West Small Batch Roasters who were awarded a bronze medal in the last National CSR Golden Bean Roaster Awards for their signature blend ‘Cheeky Monkey’.” The other unique thing about Studio 2 is that there are no memberships ... you just pay as you go - $12 per class or $10 for students and seniors and Studio 2 is also offering Personal Training for those who want to fast track their progress or focus on more specific goals. Studio 2 is also working closely with Anytime Fitness and Dance Form Professional Studio at 13 Kauri St to create a fitness hub for Cooroy locals fuelled by Flying West’s delicious coffee. As a special promotion to all Cooroy Rag readers, for the month of July all first timers to Studio 2 receive their class or coffee at half price when they like the facebook page www.facebook.com/studio2fitness For more information and the class timetable you can go to www.studio2fitness.info or call Ben on 0416 878 526.

health Accredited Exercise Physiologist at Maple St Surgery

COOROY RAG KAHRYN Parcheta, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) has recently joined the team of Allied Health Professionals at Maple St Surgery. Kahryn specialises in chronic disease and injury management, providing scientifically based exercise interventions to treat and prevent chronic medical conditions. Kahryn focuses on the prescription of functional exercises that require minimal equipment and can be performed in various private and community based settings. ‘Many of my clients feel uncomfortable in gyms and prefer alternate exercise environments.’

Exercise improves outcomes and quality of life in patients with many chronic conditions. Scientific evidence supports exercise interventions in the treatment of; arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, dementia, hypertension, mental illness, musculoskeletal injuries, obesity, osteoporosis, respiratory disease and Parkinson’s disease. While many people are aware of the benefits of physical activity, they are often apprehensive about making the necessary lifestyle changes. ‘Exercise should not be viewed as a short term intervention but a long

term lifestyle choice. It is essential that clients find forms of exercise they enjoy and these can often be combined with social activities.’ The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has developed internationally recognised exercise guidelines for health benefits. To decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease all healthy adults should perform approximately 150 minutes of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise weekly. This can be as simple as going for a brisk 30 min walk on most days. For bone, muscle and joint health, resistance and flexibility exercises should be performed 2 -

3 times weekly. If you would like to learn more about improving your health and quality of life through exercise, book an initial Exercise Physiology consultation today. AEP services are recognised by Medicare Australia, Workcover and most private health insurers. Entitled Department of Veteran’s Affairs clients may be referred for clinically necessary Exercise Physiology treatment by their GP on a valid D04 referral form. Winter Weight Loss MANY of us think of winter as a time to hibernate. We eat all those stodgy, fat-filled, high carbohydrate, comfort foods and snuggle up in front of the fireplace or tv in a tracksuit and slippers. Jumpers and coats can hide a multitude of sins, so it isn’t until the warmer months arrive that we start to worry about all those extra kilos that have been stacked on. Why not break the hibernation cycle this year? When you think about it, winter is actually the perfect time to start a health and fitness campaign. Starting an exercise regime in the cooler weather is much easier as you don’t have the heat to contend with. By the time the heat arrives you are much fitter and will find it much easier to cope with. And exercise is a great way to warm up on those cold days.

Grant for NoosaCare

Plus exercising over winter means that by summer you’ve got a body that will easily look good in shorts and swimming costumes! Now is also a great time to look at the food choices you make over winter. It’s much easier to make better choices and not put the weight on in the first place. “There are lots of fantastic winter choices that are filling, healthy and still provide the comfort we look for on cold days. It is all about being informed, making smart choices and knowing what is the right food for you,” says Maria Sturre of Make a Difference Health & Fitness. If you don’t want to pack on the kilos over Winter and plan to be in excellent shape by the time Summer roles around, give Make A Difference Health & Fitness a call on 5442 6179 or visit www.madhf.com.au.

for our business. Within the next 6 months, Sam Hargrave joined our team. Sam’s attention to detail, dedication and drive is second to none. She is a talented and exceptional agent who leaves no stone unturned. Sam lives and breathes real estate and specialises in the Pomona area. Sam and her husband are an undeniable force in the Real Estate Industry who will not rest until they achieve the best result for their clients. Shortly after we decided to start our own rent roll as we were enthusiastic to offer the same excellent service to investors and tenants. This grew quickly, and with perfect timing Gina Mahé walked into our office. Gina is a highly experienced Property Manager with a military background; once again, the perfect fit for our evolving business and within 6 months our rent roll had doubled. We felt extremely lucky to have such a strong and motivated team. So here we are 3 years in, and from a two man

team we now have 4 exceptional, hard working agents, a property manager and 4 admin staff. It was only a matter of time before our expanding team would be in need of a bigger work space. Finding a new shop was a challenge, but we both identified the hairdressers shop was perfect for our needs. When we first decided to start our own agency, finding the right branding was easy, as we both love the colour orange, so of course the new shop continues on with

our bright and vibrant branding. After overcoming a few obstacles, time was finally on our side and just as we started to spill out onto the street, the office on Maple Street became available. I often think we are just so lucky to have this great business in the town we love so much. Our company and team continue to grow from strength to strength, and we look forward to settling into our new ‘home’. We would like to invite everyone to come in and say hello.

Pool owners look to warm up to winter POOL owners no longer need to avoid their swimming pool in the cooler months with a number of heating solutions available to extend the swimming season into winter. Conrad Reed of pool and spa care franchise PoolWerx said there’s a number of heating solutions available for pool owners so they can continue to enjoy their pools in the cooler months ranging from pool covers through to gas heating and electric heat pumps. “A correctly installed pool cover can make your pool up to eight degrees warmer, while solar or gas heating can allow for year-round pool use, taking around 8 hours for an average backyard pool to be heated”. Mr. Reed said there are a number of cost effective options available if pool owners are concerned about rising electricity prices. “Solar blankets are a more inexpensive solution and help stop evaporation and reduce chemicals usage saving pool owners money. To get the most out of a pool blanket pool owners should leave the blanket on until they’re

ready to swim to ensure that water is at its maximum temperature.” Heating products can have an impact on the water chemistry so it is important that pool owners using any pool heating equipment consult a pool maintenance professional to ensure their pool remains healthy. “When using a heater you should adjust the salt water chlorination accordingly, as it can cause significant bleach damage to the pool if left unchanged.” Another popular alternative to heating products is installing a spa, however maintaining healthy spa water balance in winter can be a challenge. “Maintaining correct chemical and pH levels in a spa are extremely important as bacteria can develop much quicker than in a pool. Regularly clean your spa to protect bac-

teria building up, surface staining or scale.” It is also important that during winter pool owners don’t become complacent about pool health and safety. “Ensure that your swimming pool fence and gate are compliant with new state legislation and don’t turn off your pool equipment to maintain good water quality. Also, make sure the pool area displays a current CPR chart,” he said. All pools will need to be certified by 2015 according to current legislation. PoolWerx provides Pool Safety Inspections required for sale or lease of properties and Pool and Spa maintenance in Noosa, Tewantin, Cooroy and Gympie. : COOROY hosted a very successful AASC Community Coaching Course in June at the Cooroy Scout Grounds. Participants braved the chilly night time temperatures and travelled from Tewantin, Nambour and Kin Kin as well as Cooroy to attend. A big ‘thank you’ goes to Tim Widdison from Ausport for delivering such an enjoyable and worthwhile course. Course participant Kristy Worrall of Cooroy reported “The Course was very useful and I enjoyed it … Tim shared a lot of good ideas and information for a short course! A great combination. Thanks.” It is anticipated that Cooroy will host another Coaching Course next year, so be sure not to miss out. THE Maddern U19 Nationals is a competition for under 19 years old badminton players. This year the tournament is hosted by the Southern Tasmanian Badminton Association and players will meet at South Hobart from the 6 to the 13th of July. Three of the ten members of the Queensland delegation are from the Cooroy Badminton Club, Thibault Zeestraten, Claire Blaga and Damien Blaga. They have been preparing all year for this event and are getting ready to play against the teams of the other Australian states as well as against teams from New-Caledonia and New-Zeland. The Cooroy Badminton Club is very proud of its juniors and helping them get to Hobart. Another reason for the young ones to join the club, get the precious advice of our coach and be the next members of the Queensland Badminton Club. www.cooroybadminton.com.au

Cooroy Gymnastics NEW Syllabus and Equipment: The club has been working hard for the last two years to identify the best way to provide syllabus and programming for our students, especially the large number of recreational gymnasts. We have now partnered with Smartmoves to deliver a new recreational program that will provide a syllabus which is progressive, challenging and fun. This new program syllabus will help us and the coaches deliver better measurable outcomes for all gymnasts. We have just ordered a new vault strip for the club to replace the existing one which has been much used. The cost of a new vault run up is $2500.00 and we hope to have it in before the start of next terms classes. We have been able to purchase and upgrade this in part with the help of our community partnership grant from the Sunshine Coast Council. For more information about Cooroy Gymnastics visit http://www.cooroy gymnasticsclub.com.au/

Impact boxers claim Queensland Titles IMPACT Boxing Academy fighter Payton “The Assassin” Aird-Cardiff has claimed the 52 kg Queensland Novice title in an emphatic fashion with a first round stoppage of her opponent. Payton stepped up a division to take on Gemma Vogel from Kingaroy for the title. From the opening bell Payton had Vogel on the back foot as she applied her constant pressure. Vogel attempted to apply some of her own pressure but she was met with a superb combination with pin point accuracy from Payton. Payton then settled her self in centre ring before she unleashed a cracking right hand which sent Vogel stumbling back to the ropes. The referee intervened to apply a standing 8 count as Vogel tried to recover from the blow. With the referees call to continue boxing Payton then moved forward unleashing a perfectly timed left right combination prompting the referee to intervene again, this time to stop the fight. Payton was awarded the win via a TKO decision. “Payton proved that she is ready for the 52 kg division. She has the height, the reach and definitely has the power to shake up this division. She trains 5 nights a week and is improving out of sight with every bout she has,” coach Mark Evans said. Maddy “The Mauler” Phillips was

Gymnasts of the month

another standout boxer for the Impact Crew at the titles. Maddy fought an absolute war on Saturday night against Monica Shaw from Brisbane in the 60kg semi final. In a close decision Maddy was awarded the victory and a spot in the finals for the 60 kg title on Sunday. Maddy’s final bout on Sunday was another fiercely contested bout. Both girls put on an awesome display of boxing as neither girl really had the upper hand over the other. The final round had the crowd on their feet cheering both girls home as they both fought their hearts out. In what was one of the closest decisions of the night Maddy was defeated by a split points decision. “I am very proud of Maddy, she has had two tough bouts in two days. She always puts in 100 per cent and never gives up. That fight could have gone either way, today just wasn’t her day decision wise. She has some big things coming her way in this sport,” said Evans Alec “The Annihilator” Aird-Cardiff and Cian “The Cannon” Jones also represented the Impact crew at the titles. Both boys went down to split points decisions but they can hold their heads high because as always they fought with heart and tenacity. “I am so proud of all our fighters that fought this weekend. We had some good wins and we lost some close decisions that could have and maybe should have gone our way. But as always these kids are humble in victory and humble in defeat and to me that’s what makes them all champions,” Coach Mark Evans said...
