Sign up and have your say Plans to consolidate existing advertising signage requirements into a draft local law is now open to the community for their thoughts and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is encouraging local businesses or interested parties to have their say by visiting yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said the proposed changes aim to preserve the unique “look and feel” of Noosa as enshrined in the Noosa Design principles to ensure signage does not dominate the landscape. Ms Rawlings said the draft local law proposes a ban on A-frame, ‘teardrop’ and real-estate pointer signs which clutter footpaths and are often a safety concern. “Council feels the current requirements are adequate but is considering eliminating the use of A frames to ensure footpaths remain clear for pedestrians including those with prams and in wheelchairs.” Approval and annual license renewals for wall, window, freestanding, pylon, pole and all illuminated signs will also be introduced. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Martin Duncan, urges business owners to have their say. “Cooroy is a bustling, vibrant community that always has something happening and our business precinct is quickly gaining a reputation as the place to come for some great boutique shopping,” said Mr Duncan. “There are quite a few A-Frames in Cooroy but does the signage add to that feel or detract from it? How will the proposed laws affect you and/or your business? “To review the draft local law and provide a comment, visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au” Residents have until July 26 to provide feedback.

Some comments from business owners: “We’re not Noosa. Signage adds to our village vibe. As for safety, I’m sure the uneven and loose paving on our footpaths cause more concern for pedestrians than a few A-Frame signs.” “How will this be policed?” “We pay Council a yearly rent for use of our footpath. Why, if we can’t advertise our business?” “How are people going to find us? A lot of visitors are directed here by our signage.” “A big percentage of passersby come into the shop because of my board out the front.” “Our A Frame was stolen, we haven’t replaced it.”
