Sign up and have your say Plans to consolidate existing advertising signage requirements into a draft local law is now open to the community for their thoughts and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is encouraging local businesses or interested parties to have their say by visiting yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said the proposed changes aim to preserve the unique “look and feel” of Noosa as enshrined in the Noosa Design principles to ensure signage does not dominate the landscape. Ms Rawlings said the draft local law proposes a ban on A-frame, ‘teardrop’ and real-estate pointer signs which clutter footpaths and are often a safety concern. “Council feels the current requirements are adequate but is considering eliminating the use of A frames to ensure footpaths remain clear for pedestrians including those with prams and in wheelchairs.” Approval and annual license renewals for wall, window, freestanding, pylon, pole and all illuminated signs will also be introduced. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Martin Duncan, urges business owners to have their say. “Cooroy is a bustling, vibrant community that always has something happening and our business precinct is quickly gaining a reputation as the place to come for some great boutique shopping,” said Mr Duncan. “There are quite a few A-Frames in Cooroy but does the signage add to that feel or detract from it? How will the proposed laws affect you and/or your business? “To review the draft local law and provide a comment, visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au” Residents have until July 26 to provide feedback.

Some comments from business owners: “We’re not Noosa. Signage adds to our village vibe. As for safety, I’m sure the uneven and loose paving on our footpaths cause more concern for pedestrians than a few A-Frame signs.” “How will this be policed?” “We pay Council a yearly rent for use of our footpath. Why, if we can’t advertise our business?” “How are people going to find us? A lot of visitors are directed here by our signage.” “A big percentage of passersby come into the shop because of my board out the front.” “Our A Frame was stolen, we haven’t replaced it.”

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Martin Duncan, encourages business owners and residents to comment on Noosa Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ website

Pomona preparing to crown its king for 2019 In and around Pomona, the countdown to July 28 has already begun. For the 41st time, the Noosa hinterland town will host one of Australia’s most gruelling and historic mountain races. Unique in every way, the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is one of those events that seems to build on its strong crowd numbers every year. Pomona King of the Mountain chairperson, Heather Manders said the festival remains one of the best opportunities for the community and visitors to get together in the hinterland. “Who would have thought a simple bet in a pub in 1958 would see us all here in 2019 preparing to cheer on amazing athletes and celebrate hard working volunteers - particularly the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club?” Heather said. Still recognised as one of the best fun and free days out for the whole family, the festival concludes with the running of the signature Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge starting at 2.30pm. Other must-see events include: the Zinc 96.1 Prince & Princess Race (on Saturday, 27 July), Nestlé 3KM Family Fun Run, Cooroy Rag Animal Farm, Reid Signage Services Primary School Relays, Raine & Horne Tug

Ready for Pomona King of the Mountain on July 28 are the Cooroy Pomona Lions and the girls from the Pomona Community Bank branch ‘O’ War, Livelife Pharmacy Skate Park Competition, Pomona IGA Stage, Pomona True Value Hardware Mountain Bikes, market stalls, food, entertainment, live music, rides and much more. As part of its commitment to the race it has sponsored since 2010, Bendigo Bank customer relationship manager, Jo Winter said it’s always a special time of year and is a festival engrained in

Noosa’s culture. “We love it and there’s nothing else like it on the coast. We’re proud to be here again and it’s precisely what we’re about - supporting the community that supports us. Our Pomona Community Bank branch is delighted to commit $6,000 to the staging of the event again in 2019,” Jo shared. Heather added her delight at having Pomona’s own bank as a supporter

again this year. “Bendigo Bank have been a big part of our success for some years now, and our committee is very grateful for the things they continue to do for Pomona and the hinterland. Their good work in the local community and this partnership fits well for everyone,” she said. The Pomona King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club,

proudly sponsored by the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa, Reid Signage Services, LiveLife Pharmacy, Raine and Horne, Nestle, Pomona True Value Hardware, IGA Pomona, Zinc 96.1, Page Furnishers, Design Divaz, Pomona SES, Pomona Cadets and many more. Cooroy hosts annual Dinner with the Mayor

Mayor Tony Wellington

A time-honoured tradition in Cooroy is the annual Dinner with the Mayor event and it is always a sell out event. It is an informative evening for local residents and business owners and is also a wonderful social night. The tradition continues this year with Mayor Tony Wellington on Tuesday 13th August at Saw and Mill. “Dinner with the Mayor is a great tradition that has continued with every Mayor and the newly renovated Saw and Mill is a great spot to host it. It is always a fun and interesting night,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Martin Duncan. Dinner with the Mayor commences at 5.45pm for a 6.00pm start and is held in a private dining room. During the evening Mayor Tony Wellington will address the attendees and give an update on the latest news in the Noosa region. Guests also have the opportunity to mingle and catch

up and there is a delectable two course dinner to enjoy as well. The meals are served in an alternate drop with eye fillet cooked medium with potato crush, fresh season vegetables and red wine jus and grilled crispy-skin salmon with rosemary roasted chats, wilted greens and salsa verda for mains. Desserts offer up lime and ginger panna cotta and bread and butter pudding with vanilla bean ice cream. Tickets are just $45 for members of the Cooroy Chamber and $50 for non-members! Cooroy Community Bank welcomes dynamic duo

You may already be getting used to their faces, but the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has welcomed two new staff members in recent weeks. Cindy Hazeldene and Ella Dawes each have a great story and they’re both loving their time in the hinterland. Cindy grew up in Bendigo and started working for Bendigo Bank in 2009. Based in Head Office, she spent time in the Card and Merchant Operations team until late 2014, then moving to the Mortgage Help Centre. After talking about moving to Queensland for many years, Cindy decided it was time to take the plunge and follow her dreams. Ready for a new challenge, she is loving this new chapter of her life in Cooroy. Ella graduated from high school last year having grown up on the coast. It’s a great opportunity to get to know more of what makes the hinterland so special. She’s already investing a lot of spare time at events and community meeting and taking in as much as she can, settling into a job that’s already feeling like it was made for her. Cindy and Ella have joined a strong team at the Cooroy Community Bank. With the team now nine in number, senior branch manager Simone Flavelle says it’s another

sign of Bendigo Bank’s long-term commitment to the hinterland. “While many of our competitors are closing bank branches and moving out or reducing their staff, we’re committed here long-term. The fact that we have three Community Bank branches in Noosa is really exciting,” Simone said. “Our philosophy is a well-known and respected banking model. It’s based on feeding into our community prosperity, not off it and we’re delighted Cindy and Ella are now on board,” she added. Cindy will be based at Cooroy branch and Ella will spend time in both the Cooroy and Pomona branches. Simone added that Cindy and Ella have each brought something special to the team. “They’ve all been great additions to our branches and any time you get to add to a dynamic team it’s a great thing - for us and the hinterland. We look forward to seeing more of their skill sets in action as they continue working closely with our local customers, families and businesses. “Everyone has to bank somewhere, so why not bank with a local bank that’s giving their profits back right here?” Simone concluded. The Cooroy Community Bank branch is open 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. You can also all the branch directly on 5447 7131.

Barrie Adams & Donata Page Christmas in July The Eumundi & District Historical Association together with the Original Eumundi Markets are hosting Christmas in July on Friday 26th July at the newly refurbished School of Arts in Eumundi as a fundraiser to support farmers through Rural Aid. “It is great to be able to celebrate Christmas twice a year and at the same time help support a worthy cause. We have a lot to celebrate this year with the completion of the three-year long refurbishment of the School of Arts. The building inside and out looks amazing and recently won two Sunshine Coast Design Awards for the renovated bathrooms,” said President, Donata Page. “The Christmas in July activity will also support our farmers with EHA and OEM joining forces to help support Rural Aid’s Buy a Cow project,” said Chairman of the Original Eumundi Markets Board, Barrie Adams. “The Buy a Cow project is an initiative of Rural Aid that follows the buy a bale campaign. The loss of over 500,000 head of cattle is a massive hit to the industry. Many of these family farming operations have lost their core breeders which will take them years to replace.” “After being in drought and feeding these animals for 7 years, these farmers need all the help they can get and now it’s time to give these farmers a boost with rebuilding their herd numbers. Many farmers will have no income for at least 12 or 18 months, maybe longer. This campaign is offering them practical support.” The Christmas in July event will include entertainment by the Boston Belles, Christmas themed decorations and table settings, three courses of Christmas fare by local chef Peter Wolfe and a cash bar. Early bird prices up to 30th June are only $60 per person and tables of 8 are available for groups. Tickets $70 per person. Tickets can be purchased online through www.trybooking.com/BBTMC For further information contact the event organiser on 0402 215 560.

Barely a nickel for Nicklin After the disappointment of the recent State Budget where there was barely a nickel for Nicklin I intend to keep fighting for our fair share and fighting for the priorities for Nicklin. In that regard I have conducted a Nicklin wide survey and you will shortly receive, if not already, a survey form in the post. It is important that I am aware of the concerns of the whole electorate and where the priorities are. Whilst I’m out in the community a lot at various events, doorknocking and mobile offices, this electorate wide survey is the best way I can get input from the largest sample of the electorate on what’s important to us. Please take the time to complete the survey and you can just take a pic and text it back to us it would be greatly appreciated. As we approach the end of the financial year we enter

Whether it’s sitting down with a calculator yourself or gathering paperwork for a visit to your accountant, it’s time to get your paperwork together. The 2019/20 financial year will be another big one in terms of the national and global financial position. So, perhaps it’s time to make your new financial year resolutions? The question is how can we best achieve those and what steps can we take? For a lot of Australians, the home mortgage is the major household expense and yet sometimes that is an area that is not reviewed on a regular basis or included in a plan for the year. Why not take this time to do a health check on your mortgage? Why not contact your bank and ask for some time to sit down and review your options? As we know, it’s a great time for small businesses. The Government announced earlier this year that from January 29, 2019 the small business (turnover up to $10 million) instant asset deduction limit is to be increased from $20,000 to $25,000 and availability extended until 30 June 2020. So, until 30 June 2020: • The small business (turnover up to $10 million) write-off limit is increased from $25,000 to $30,000, applied on a per asset basis. • Medium sized businesses (turnover from $10 million to $50 million) will now also have access to the instant asset write off in respect of assets acquired from Budget night to 30 June 2020. • (As before) the small business pooling (simplified depreciation) rules and suspension of the lockout rules continue. This incentive can be coupled with great

rates on Equipment Finance packages, so put that new financial year resolution together and ring your local bank manager. Even better, ring me! That advice and input could make your new financial year a happy one. If you would like to know more about any of these services at our Cooroy or Pomona Community Bank branches, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

news Transport trial connects Kenilworth

COOROY RAG Patches of Cooroy

Kenilworth residents will have better access to Maleny, Nambour, Mapleton, Eumundi and Yandina under a new transport service. Supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s Transport Levy, the Kenilworth Community Transport Service will provide affordable, reliable and accessible transport. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the new volunteer-run service will be trialled for 12-months. “One of the main benefits of the Kenilworth Community Transport Service is that it provides a cost-effective transport option for Kenilworth residents,” Cr Rogerson said. “Kenilworth residents living within 6.5km of the Kenilworth Post Office, at 16a Elizabeth Street, can travel for only $8 return per trip,” he said. Participants will need to pre-register as users of the service by visiting council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching for

Kenilworth Community Transport Service or by phoning the Kenilworth Community Transport on 07 5446 0122 or visit the Kenilworth Visitor Information Centre at 9 Elizabeth Street, Kenilworth. “Pre-registering is simple, participants will just need to answer a few questions about yourself and where you live and a representative from the transport service sub-committee will contact you to discuss your registration. “After that it’s as simple as booking the service by 2pm the day before you wish to travel,” Cr Rogerson said. The service will initially offer three scheduled services per week, additional services can be arranged, subject to driver availability and passenger demand. Council and the sub-committee are also keen to hear from residents living outside of the 6.5km zone who may be interested in the service.

He followed up this victory, teaming up with Indiana Kowalcyzk in the ANSTO Top Coder interstate competition, taking home the Year 6 Top Coder Award. Year 5 Geeks, Leon B and Millie W won the Year 5 ANSTO Top Coder Competition. All four students will travel to the University of Technology in Sydney on 17th August to compete against the NSW Top Coder in the Geek of Origin.

Add some glitter to your pooch’s life

Glitter Pawz, located at 500 Cooroy Noosa Road, Tinbeerwah, is a holistic pet grooming salon, offering a specialised level of care suited to nervous pets with anxiety and senior aged pets. Owner of Glitter Pawz, Jodie Graham says it’s very important that your pet has a positive experience and learn that grooming can be fun. “After 30 years of grooming, I not only have the skills but also the experience to understand how pets feel,” says Jodie. “We schedule appointments so your pet is the only pet in the salon, where they will be given a hundred per cent of love and attention, and normally ready to go home within 1-2hrs. “It’s a safe and comfortable environment, fully air conditioned and set up with state-of-the-art

equipment including a custom-made gold pet tub with walk up ramp, electric grooming table, and clipper vac system.” Jodie, who bought her first salon in Sydney when she was only 19 before travelling to America to become the first Australian Master Groomer in 2001, says she’s always had an infinity with animals. “I’m lucky to have found my dream job at such a young age. “I love creating new looks to suit each pet’s individual personality, including teddy bear styles as my signature groom. “My aim is for your pet to go home feeling as good as they look!” For more information or appointments call Glitter Pawz on 0447 688 565.

The Gift of Kindness

Kindness Club members Kyla, Maddie, Elsie, Maya, and Rhiannon interviewed Margie about her special mice The Kindness Club would like to introduce Marg Whitford, who has been doing a kind deed since 2011! Margie hand knits toy mice for children having procedures at Cooroy Family Medical and at QML Pathology in Cooroy. Margie started knitting mice with her late Mother almost nine years ago to make children happy and to help take away the pain after a procedure. So far she’s made close to 3000 mice with each one taking around two and a half hours to make. Margie decided on mice because when she started another lady was making lovely little teddy bears and she thought she’d make something different. “It took a while to learn how to make them,”

said Margie. “I had to follow a pattern very closely and made a few mistakes along the way. But after 3000, I can almost knit them with my eyes closed,” she laughs. We calculated Margie’s knitting time at 7500 hours or around 10 solid months! WOW! Thank you for being so kind Margie. You make the world a better place! Do you know of someone doing kind things in our community? We would love to hear from you! Please email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com or send your nomination to The Kindness Club, c/- P.O Box 816, Cooroy.

Permaculture Festival fabulous for all To celebrate Permaculture Noosa’s 25th Anniversary, its original founder and renowned permaculture Pioneer Geoff Lawton together with local MP Sandy Bolton, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, indigenous elder Fred Palin, Gardening Club of Australia President, George Hoad and Permaculture Noosa’s President Latha Matters, planted a bushtucker tree in the gardens. Special thanks to Noosa & District Landcare for donating the tree. Mother Nature turned on a lovely sunny day to reward the participants of the inaugural Permaculture Noosa Festival at the Cooroy Community Permaculture Gardens in Emerald Street on Sunday 9th June. Despite being a little muddy underfoot in places, all those who came along to enjoy the atmosphere, listen to speakers, wander the interesting stalls and tour the gardens enjoyed a wonderful and informative day. The children were delighted to have their faces painted and to play in the newly installed sandpit while parents learnt all about getting started in permaculture and creating permaculture gardens no matter what site they have; growing food for good health, medicinal herbs and tinctures and how to attract bees to their garden. Informative talks while touring the gardens were very popular with people learning lots from experienced organic gardeners and having all their burning questions answered. Harvest Swap Sunshine Coast had a special swap for the Festival with people bringing along excess

homegrown produce, seedlings etc, placing them on the table and taking away a similar quality of produce from other contributors. A great variety of produce and plants were exchanged on the day Being such a lovely warm day, families enjoyed eating delicious foods and nourishing drinks while basking in sunshine all the time knowing that their food containers were all compostable and that there was no plastic in sight!. In fact, the waste from the event was very minimal as all compostables were collected for the community garden’s compost bins, keeping the garden worms very happy indeed. Organisers of the event were extremely excited that the day was so successful and the energy and the atmosphere within the gardens was uplifting and inspirational. The Permaculture Noosa events team gratefully acknowledge the contributions and support from local businesses and community groups to make it all happen. Plans for the next Permaculture Noosa Festival are already underway!

Congratulations to Susan Beattie, Winner of Cooroy Supa IGA’s in-store promotion of an outdoor heater give-away. Great weather for it!

Permaculture Noosa Permaculture Noosa’s next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday 18th July at Cooroy Memorial Hall. Doors open at 6.00pm. We share surplus home grown produce and plants by giving, exchanging or selling. Entry is a $5 donation for non-members. The meeting begins at 6.30pm and the night is complete with a “bring a plate” shared supper at or after 8.30pm. All welcome.

Park Sounds free music event Bring your picnic rug on Sunday 7 July from 1 4pm for Park Sounds - a fabulous afternoon of free live music in Dick Caplick Park, right in the centre of town Eumundi. The line-up will see Alisa Todd, Majelen and Smoke & Rain take to the stage! Alisha Todd: From her humble beginnings being raised on country and 90’s pop in Gympie, to opening the lid of Pandora’s box of worldly delights, Alisha has sung her way through it all with a fiery passion that only grows with time. 2013 brought the release of her debut EP ‘Of All Time’, a 5-track collection of country-pop inspired songs that was warmly received. Without Us earned Alisha three Dolphin Awards finalist nominations and Charlie was finalist in Pop Song Of The Year for both Dolphin Awards and The Music Oz awards. She then set off on a three year journey of self, social and musical discovery through Europe, and planted her feet back on home soil in 2018. Her latest EP ‘Live At Sonic Vista Studios’ is a collection of live solo acoustic performances recorded at Sonic Vista Studios in Ibiza, inside a 400 year old finca. Alisha’s profound affection for fusing jazz and pop with an earthy roots flavour creates a brew that warms you from the inside and embraces your physical being in a musical mumma squeeze. Majelen: Brisbane-based guitarist and singer MAJELEN is one to watch in the indie/folk music scene. With a unique percussive acoustic guitar style, Majelen’s music is combination of ground-breaking technical fluency and speed, thought-provoking lyrics, improvised melodies and captivating stage presence. Since completing her studies in Jazz Guitar, she’s spent the last few years travelling the world, performing, and writing the framework for her debut recordings. Majelen has had the opportunity to perform alongside some of Australia’s most accomplished musicians including James Morrison,

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Kristin Berardi, Gus Cereijo, Elly Hoyt, Katie Noonan and Emma Dean; and was selected to perform as the guitarist in the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Majelen released her debut solo single Me and You last year, followed by Angels in the Dark and combined these releases with shows throughout Australia, Asia and the UK. She’s soon to release her EP ‘The Light’ - strongly influenced by jazz and blues, as well as the many cultures she has grown to love. Smoke & Rain: Joining us from Newcastle, NSW, SMOKE & RAIN play music for the body and the soul - grooves to get you moving and melodies full of emotion. With a singular goal (auditory pleasure), they’ll take you on a journey through the rhythmic drive of funk and the sensual introspection of R&B. Consisting of members Cormac Grant, Healey Olsen and Manuel Rohrl, the trio is inspired by music with a great groove and the lyricism to match. They’ve created a unique blend of sounds that can have them going off at a Friday night venue or taking extended instrumental breaks at a jazz club. N.B. This is an alcohol-free event

Give a crap about your bowel Bowel cancer is also called colorectal cancer. It is diagnosed in over 12 500 Australians every year, and represents the second highest number of cancer deaths after lung cancer. Mostly affecting people 50 years of age and over, it can happen in younger people too and is a serious disease. But......if bowel cancer or its precursors (polyps) are diagnosed early, it is often curable!! So what are the causes of bowel cancer and how can you avoid it? Unfortunately, the causes of bowel cancer are not clearly understood. However, we do know that some risk factors make it more likely that a person will develop bowel cancer. Some of these include: Getting older – commonly affecting people aged 50 and over Inheriting one of two uncommon genetic disorders A personal or strong family history of bowel cancer Having ulcerative colitis (inflamed colon lining) for more than eight to 10 years Having a diet high in red and processed meat, drinking too much alcohol and smoking Being overweight or obese (particularly for men) So what can you do to help reduce your risk of bowel cancer? Regular screening Eating a healthy diet, including plenty of vegetables and fruit and only small amounts of animal fat – researchers believe that eating a healthy diet may help to prevent as many as one third of all cancers, including bowel cancer!!

Smartpups Charity Shop

Eating moderate amounts of lean red meat as part of a mixed diet including carbohydrates (breads and cereals), vegetables and fruit, and dairy products Eating limited amounts of processed meats Maintaining a healthy body weight Exercising regularly Not smoking or drinking too much alcohol. Following this advice doesn’t mean that you will never get bowel cancer, but it can reduce your risk and has other health benefits too. Did you know that LiveLife pharmacies offer bowel cancer screening for their patients? Bowel Cancer Screening involves a test for bowel cancer in people who do not have any obvious symptoms of the disease and aims to find any polyps or to find cancer early when they are easier to treat and cure. A bowel cancer screening test called a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) can detect these small amounts of blood in your bowel motion. The FOBT looks for blood in your bowel motion, but not for bowel cancer itself. This test is easy to do at home, and involves placing small samples of stool on special cards and sending them to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results are then sent back to you and your doctor. LiveLife pharmacies encourage all Australians who are aged 50 and over, who do not have symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer, to undertake bowel cancer screening.

fundraising and Smartpups covers the rest. We have around 56 dogs in the program at the moment and there is quite a long waiting list. We are always looking for volunteers in the shops and would love you to ring us or call in to have a chat about the various roles available. It’s loads of fun and you will be meeting lots of great people – fellow volunteers and our loyal customers. Visit www.smartpups.org.au or email charityshop@smartpups.com.au The shop often gets overstocked, especially with clothing donations and we would love to know if there are any organisations in our local area around Cooroy or Pomona that need clothing. If so, please contact the shop.

Hormones…the conversation is not clear. How do they work and why am I not feeling so good? And what about that unspoken word: Menopause. Many in our modern society mistake the feeling of being under stress, for having energy. This has become our ‘new normal’. And, our most common response to each other when we ask: “How are you” is: “BUSY”. Understand how this “new normal” of busyness, and our lives effect our hormones in our workshop, “Balancing your hormones, will balance your life” on Saturday, 27th July. The first hormone popped up under the microscope in 1902, thousands of years after classical Eastern medicines could specifically identify them. However, both Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine give us a practical and comprehensive context in which to understand how they work. In this workshop, we will look at some causes of infertility, painful or irregular periods, why there can be extreme symptoms around menopause, how our lives impact the health of our hormones, some good food to eat and practical tools to bring your life into balance. We will explore hormones through the lens of Western Science but gain an understanding of how to identify what is causing the problem and how to address it through the eyes and knowledge of Ayurvedic Medicine. Really learn how to work with yourself and how to move through life with more ease. The day includes a Vegetarian lunch, chai and some handy notes to take away so you can feel better. Retirement Living Many Australians are choosing to sell their homes and move to retirement villages (often referred to as over 55’s resorts) when they stop work. According to the Property Council of Australia, in 2014, there were more than 2300 retirement villages in Australia and around 184,000 seniors living in retirement villages. However that figure is expected to double with some predicting as many as 382,000 people will be living in retirement villages by 2025. Legislation has recently been amended with further changes still to come providing much better consumer protections for village residents.

The amendments are a positive step forward however with all the changes it’s just as important to consult your lawyer before signing anything. The retirement village is required to provide you with certain documents that can be very detailed and confusing. It is still important to shop around and be informed of your options as well as considering what it is you want from a retirement village and very importantly refuse to be hassled or rushed into a decision. If you are considering retirement village living please don’t hesitate to call Andrew Markert at SPM Law 5440 4800 to help you with this major lifestyle choice.

MOTOR TRADERS ASSN OF QLD

On midnight on Friday 12 July over 300 horses and their riders will take to the pitch dark tracks of the Imbil State Forest to tackle Australia’s most prestigious endurance ride, the Tom Quilty Gold Cup. Steeped in history and internationally recognised by the endurance community, this Tom Quilty Gold Cup will see riders from as young as 12 and right up to 78 years of age take on the challenge of completing a 160km course with just a headlight and their four-legged best friend for company. This is a story of adventure; true grit; the incredible partnership between horse and rider and a passion for the sport of endurance, which goes right back to 1966 when R.M. Williams and his wife Erica established the iconic Aussie event. Matthew Sample, the owner for Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex which will host the Tom Quilty Gold Cup for the first time, said he and his team were delighted to welcome what many expect will be one of the biggest event in its 54year history. “We’re excited that the 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup is coming to Imbil and expect our local population of around 900 will at least triple in the week leading up to the event,” Mr Sample said. “The who’s who of endurance will be here with defending champion Kristie Taprell hoping to win her third title being joined in the field by 2016 winner Debbie Grull, 2015 winner Ben Hudson and 2013 winner and Kenilworth-local Brook Sample who hopes to continue to build on his existing record of seven Tom Quilty Gold Cup wins. “Also worth noting is the high number of juniors expected to take to the track for the first time this year which is great news for the future of endurance. We currently have five 12-year-olds nominated who all successfully completed a 160km ride last year to qualify for this event and I’m very proud to say that the youngest of these is my nephew Zac Sample who can’t wait to take on his first Tom Quilty. “On the other side of the spectrum we have Ken Gordon from Toowoomba hoping to win his second buckle at 78 years of age, having won his first at age 74. The longevity in participating in this sport is one of the main attractions and also why it’s such a popular pastime for entire families. “Those who attend will generally stay onsite at the complex alongside their horses and spend many an hour around the campfire sharing stories of Quiltys long gone across the generations. Mr Sample is a perfect example of this with his own family being incredibly successful in the sport. His father, Bob took home the Tom Quilty Gold Cup in 1993 in Tasmania, and Matthew himself jointly won the 2009 Tom Quilty in Tonimbuk, Victoria crossing the finish line with brother Brook, who has seven Tom Quilty wins under his belt. For the first time, Brook will head into the forest for a Quilty with both his sons by his side. Matthew is aged 15 and Zac is currently the youngest of the 300-plus riders to take to the track

Brook Sample will this year be looking to extend the record he already holds of seven Tom Quilty Gold Cup wins his most recent being at Kilkivan, Queensland in 2013 on Brookleigh Excalibur. (Credit Denise Keelan Photography) at 12. President of the Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club Kim Moir said she is thrilled with the number of nominations to date with over 300 riders registering from as far afield as Western Australia and Tasmania as well as internationally from New Zealand, Canada, USA and Estonia. “Those who are passionate about this sport will travel to participate in a handful of iconic rides around the world and the Tom Quilty is one of them, along with the Tevis Cup in California which originally inspired R.M. and Erica Williams to create the Tom Quilty Gold Cup. “Both cups are based on the premise of completing 100 miles (or 160km) in one day and when R.M. approached his good friend Tom Quilty about the idea in 1996, Tom donated the $1,000 which paid for the original gold cup which still has pride of place in the Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach. “Over the 54 years that followed, thousands have taken to the tracks with the aim of securing a treasured buckle and joining the few elite riders who have completed the Tom Quilty. “Those attempting the challenging 160km ride will set off at midnight on Friday, riding into Saturday morning with the winner expected to arrive at the finish line after 10 to 11 hours. Riders are required to return to the complex for vetting every 30-40 kilometres so vets can check on the horses’ wellbeing before being permitted to set off on further legs.

Cooroy Golf Club Annual Open Day

Rugby Union: Eumundi Dragons match report U10 - Another strong display by U10 Dragons at Maleny this weekend. Firstly, a close game against Saints, where the scrum was impressive, forwards were strong, and the backs positional play was improved. The second game saw the Dragons take on Noosa, and again the boys played well. Support play and the whole team working together saw the Dragons continue to improve. Alex E was Most Improved on ground and Jai took home the Man of the Match. Well done team. U8 - The winter solstice did not disappoint, being cold and windy, but neither did the Eumundi under 8’s rugby team, they came out hot and fast. The first half against Flinders was very close with some good tackling, smart passing and lots of communication. Despite going down by a small number and missing 3 of our awesome players due to winter colds the boys all played very well. The second game against Noosa was even better! It was great to watch the ball going through so many hands and still be able to maintain possession. The game had everything from great sportsmanship from Jet D who scored a try, to the 10 tries scored by Lucas. Josh V also made an impressive run up the side line to score as well. In the final seconds of the game Jasper B drove a maul and forced a line out which resulted in a try. It was this smart play that Jasper was awarded with player of the game. U7’s - The Dragons U7’s played a tough game against Noosa at Maleny on Saturday. It was a classic game of two halves with the introduction of more structured passing in the second half the team improved their passing, sharing and spread across the field. Maya had a player of the week performance showing determined running and excellent sportspersonship. Well done Dragons. U6 - The warm up was critical this morning in chilly conditions at Whitta. The u6 lined up for 2 games against Noosa and Flinders. Always enthusiastic, showing great teamwork, all players crossed the try line. Nixon showing some elusive footwork to receive player of the day.

Noosa Hinterland Golf The most memorable golf and social experience

G. Michael ( President ) and J. Crouther

Sunday 23rd June the Cooroy Golf Club held their annual Cooroy Open. A field of 108 players braved the chilly but sunny morning. Despite the Course being soaked regularly over the last couple of months played really well. Players commented on how well the greens were and thanks must go to the Course Managers.

After the game a luncheon was put on by Wayne and his Staff which was gratefully appreciated. Special mention must go to Cyril and the Volunteers without whose help would have been sorely missed. Also a heartfelt thanks to all the Sponsors. After 2 sudden death holes J. Crouther was crowned as the 2019 Cooroy Open winner with a fine 69.
