Cooroy has got talent!

Heat 1 contenstants OPPORTUNITIES to get your name into lights perform to a live crowd and get rid of those stage jitters are something that every performer needs ... and wants! And there is no better way, no matter what your age, to get that experience and first taste of adrenalin by entering Cooroy’s Got Talent! The first heat was held on Saturday 24th June at the Cooroy RSL Club, and was an awesome show of some seriously talented youngsters and “oldsters”! The first heat to find the talent hidden in Cooroy showcased a wide range of singing styles and ages. With the first 10 contestants battling their own demons of stage jitters and last minute technical hitches, the appreciative crowd enjoyed a cross section of genres from rap to classical crooning, as well as the opportunity to vote for their favourite choices in the Viewers Choice Awards. Many thanks to judges Jenni Miller, Nathan Marriott and Phil Hutchinson who all have singing and judging backgrounds and were in sync with the audience when they announced the winners of Heat One. Congratulations to the following: In the juniors William Clift performing Moondance took the top spot from Runner up Shanai Palmer in the Junior section, and in the seniors Casey Regan with his Beat Box Rap from Sonya Lutje who will all go through to the Grand Final on July 28. The Viewers Choice Award went to Genevieve Rose with her amazing voice.

Not my fave

I HAD a discussion with my teenagers last week after I’d had a particularly stressful day at work, arrived home late, cooked dinner (after cleaning up the dirty dishes and benchtops from the night before), did a couple of loads of washing, picked up the bag of rubbish the dog had torn to pieces, vacuumed, mopped then sat down and cried. I believe we have reached the stage where now that there are four adults living in the house then I shouldn’t be the only one crying. From now on, we’re all to pick up after ourselves, wipe up our own spills and start taking responsibility. It all sounds pretty good, but one of us hasn’t been adhering to the new rules, and I’m pretty sure it’s me. As I scavenged through the pile of dirty clothes on my bedroom floor this morning, sniffing the armpits of my cardigan to see if I still had a day left in it, I glanced around at the rest of the house. The plates and cups in the lounge were from my midnight snack, the milk that had been left on the kitchen bench overnight was from my last cup of char, and the dishwasher was full of dirty dishes because I’d forgotten to turn it on. Perhaps there’s only three adults living in the house, and a big snotty sook. So there you have it … Sniffing, snacking and snotting … Scraping the milk curds off my morning coffee … not my fave!

Money matters – or does it??? To most of us the way money works, is a total mystery, And that has been the case, all through financial history. When markets fall and the currency drops, where does the money go? If you’re like me it’s obvious, you do not really know. Everything goes up, then everything goes down, it’s like an elevator, And then the Euro says “It all looks crook, we hope to fix it later”. The Spanish and the Greeks go broke, so the populace has a riot, The Americans get low on cash, but hope to keep it quiet. Australia we are told, is in great financial shape, The Government says it is so clever, we managed to escape. We dodged the financial crises, the Treasurer proudly cries, The rest of the world’s in trouble, but we’ve cut them down to size. With all this activity, of course, the economists have a ball, Even though just out of college, they claim to know it all. They forecast today, what tomorrow the market is going to do, And then explain the day after, why it all fell through. They pontificate solemnly, they all have fine degrees, But can’t explain logically, why the world’s on its financial knees. They use long words in their analysis, like prioritisation, And declare the market indicators, need their expert misinterpretation. Liquidity problems mean you’re broke, labour participation means work, Collateralised debt collection means your credit has gone berserk, You don’t go broke now, you go into liquidation. And you also have another refuge, and can elect administration, Outcome oriented leadership, means that you’re the boss, But trying to explain carbon dequestration, leaves me at a total loss. Money is the root of evil, that’s the widely held belief, But it’s the love of money that’s the cause of so much financial grief. Money is claimed to be all-important, that’s what we’ve always heard, But when it’s compared to oxygen and sex, it struggles to come in third!!!

We look forward to the next 3 heats each Sunday at 12noon, so come along and cheer along these hidden gems, and don’t forget to book in for the Final on the 28th by calling 54476131. There are still spots available each Sunday @ 12noon at the Cooroy RSL before the grand final to be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 28th July. Entries so far include vocal and instrumental soloists, dancers and comedians, and there are no restrictions to age or category! With a Sunshine Coaster hitting fame at the age of 40 in the “must have” viewing The Voice, it never too late to dust off that talent and bring it out for everyone to enjoy. Proceeds from the event are part of the voluntary efforts of the fundraising team for the Cooroy Project to refurbish the Memorial Hall, so even if you don’t have a talent to unleash, come along and help pick your favourite performer along with the Judges and enjoy some great acts. NDSHS Australian Business Week Success

ABW winners - Brazi’s YEAR 11 students from Noosa District State High School experienced great success

and learned valuable life skills from the Australian Business Week (ABW) programme.

ABW ran for a week from Friday 15 June. Students were arranged into teams and had to

work together to run a café business. Students gained an understanding of business as they made all the management decisions necessary for the successful operation of their business in a competitive marketplace. Students operated their café for two years and had to make financial decisions every quarter. The Year 11’s had to prepare a TV advertisement, trade display, and an oral presentation and an annual report for a board of directors. The winning café team, Brazis was mentored by business teacher Sarah Thornley and students Maitland Picozzi, Kiah Homan, Danae Leek, Stephanie Dakin, Liam Fretus,

Michael Syrch, Carlee Darben, Emily Cadogan, Kayle O’Hanlon, Ben Jensen, Kylah Thompson, Bronson Clarke, Kaeylan Brady, Ryan Ingram and Jordan Grogan. Brazis was a Brazilian, organic fair trade café with a memorable television commercial featuring Tarzan. “The team was amazing,” Ms Thornley said. Ms Thornely said that her team worked exceptionally well and they learned to value everyone’s opinion. The winning team was awarded with a trophy, individual medals, Big W vouchers and stationery. The skills and knowledge obtained during this week will be put into good use in the Year 11’s future endeavours.

Station set for historic revamp WORK has begun on a facelift for Cooroy station with Queensland Rail honouring the historical origins of one the state’s last timber railway station buildings. You may have noticed work carried out on the Cooroy station building and adjoining goods shed, but this will have no impact on rail services. The painting of the station building is set to begin this week and due for completion by the end of the month, work will also commence on a revamp of the goods shed located in a separate building to the station. The makeover follows extensive consultation with heritage experts to ensure the new colour scheme was in keeping with the character of the heritage-listed building. Cooroy station is one of only nine 19th century timber country station buildings that remain on the North Coast Line, which extends from Brisbane to Cairns. Given Cooroy’s prominent role in our rail history, as the final crucial link in the construction of the North Coast Line, we wanted to ensure the renova-

tions were well-conceived, appropriate and beneficial to the whole community. The proposed palette for the station makeover draws from early photographs and architectural drawings of the building, as well as reflecting colour schemes prevalent in that era of Queensland history. The research by heritage consultants even included scraping and sampling the current building to reveal early paint layers. Queensland Rail Historian Greg Hallam said Cooroy has played a pivotal role in rail history, dating back to 1888 when temporary buildings were erected during construction of the line from Gympie. “Although the Cooroy railway station was established in 1891, the town was not surveyed until 1907, and town allotments in Cooroy were sold in April 1908,” Mr Hallam said. “The fact that the Cooroy station building had been extended twice before the town of Cooroy was even surveyed demonstrates that there was a fair amount of traffic at the station, either for timber or tourism.”

At the yearly launch of the Quilters Trail, the entry fee is always for charity. This year Margaret Kippen chose the Black Mountain Rural Fire Brigade to be the beneficiary after hearing that their driveway had washed away in the heavy rains in March. Pictured is Jackie Kirk (Black Mt Rural Fire Brigade) presenting Margaret with a certificate of appreciation for the donation.

ONLY days until nominations for Australia’s grueling and historic mountain race, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge close and spots are filling up fast. Race coordinator Barry Stewart said he has already received 86 nomination for a maximum field of 95 entrants in the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival’s main attraction on July 22, 2012. “So far the competitors that have registered for the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge come from all over. “There are six competitors from New Zealand including one-to-watch Shay Williamson. Shay finished second overall in 2011 and is one of the main contenders to win this year’s Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. “He will be going head to head with current record holder and six time consecutive winner of the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, Neil Labinsky,” said Mr Stewart. This year, Mr Labinsky is aiming for the most consecutive wins in King of the Mountain history. The Nambour athlete first won the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge in 2006. In 2009 he broke the record set by long-time race runner Graham Barralet with a time of 22.43 minutes. This year Mr Barralet returns to Pomona to take on Mount Coorora at the age of 60. “When he last ran in 2009, Graham said he would like to come back at 60years-old and run the race in less than 30 minutes. It is wonderful to have him

participating this year,” said Barry Stewart. “Between Neil, Shay and Graham, this year ’s 34 th annual Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge is going to be the most exciting one yet,” he said. BRICKBATS to bad spellers. After watching the programme on TV about spelling I’m convinced the education system has produced generations of illiterates. Proof of that was in a sign I saw last weekend at Pomona. A shop there advertised “pee and ham soup”. Now that would be an acquired taste. I just wonder where they got the ingredients. BRICKBAT to drivers who don’t stop at pedestrian crossings. Too many times I have stepped out onto the pedestrian crossing in Maple Street assuming cars will stop for me only to find one side stops and while on the crossing a car from the other side goes past right in front of me while walking across the crossing. Slow down, Look out people. We want to live in Cooroy! BOUQUET to the Tewantin Policeman who helped an 88 year old pensioner. He found my hearing aid I had lost in the carpark at Tewantin and promptly returned it to me personally at my home. Much appreciated.

Goodbye Cooroy Mountain Spring Water CONTRACTORS were laid off at Cooroy Mountain Spring Water last week. A deal was done by liquidators KordaMentha for local businessman Peter Lavin to buy the Wimmers side of the business, but Mr Dinsey has blocked the sale of the water part by placing a caveat in the Supreme Court of Qld over the land on which the spring and bottling plant sit. Mr Dinsey has placed himself in the hands of a psychiatrist. The Cooroy Mountain Spring Water customer data base has been sold to Neverfail Industries (Coca Cola). If you are a customer of Cooroy Mountain Spring Water you won’t be able to buy the local Cooroy springwater any more.

DID you know that each month there is a gathering of Goddesses at the Cooroy Hotel? Australia’s fastest growing business women’s network, Enlightened Goddesses, have been running events at the Cooroy Hotel for the last four months and it just keeps getting bigger and better. Each month there is an inspiring guest speaker who shares something that will help women to grow their business. The Enlightened Goddess Network was founded here on the Sunshine Coast by Natalie McIvor and she has now expanded her network of events to cover Gympie, Cooroy, Coolum, Mooloolaba and Caloundra. “There are so many women out there in business who either work alone from home or have a slightly larger business where they spend so much time working ‘in’ the business that they can feel isolated,” says Natalie. On top of that Natalie knows that many women feel intimidated in the more corporate networking environment. Enlightened Goddesses

therefore provides a safe and supportive environment for women to come together and make authentic connections. “It’s networking with heart. Women network in a different manner to men. They are able to form genuine friendships and business relationships, which in turn creates huge business growth for everyone,” Natalie said. Enlightened Goddess Event Manager for Cooroy, Helen Barber from 2B Creative explains, “When Natalie asked me to host an event each month, I knew instantly that I wanted to bring it to Cooroy to help connect business women in this area. I am so grateful to Nikki McDonald and her team at the Cooroy Hotel for all the support they have shown us over the last few months. We encourage all Cooroy and Hinterland business women to come and experience the benefits of connection with a like minded, heartfelt and fun group of women,” says Helen Barber, “we can’t wait to meet you and find out about your business and how we can help you get

to the next level through the collaboration and support of this network.” The next event is scheduled for July 31 the guest speaker will be Michelle House from Secret Budget. news Increase Turnover to Improve Profitability Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy THE best way to improve profitability is to increase turnover as there is no limit to sales but there is a limit on reducing your costs. Below are some possible tactics to improve your turnover: • Invest resources in increasing your sales volume. • Look for new markets and distribution channels. For instance, are you really making the best use of the internet? Can you form a strategic alliance with a complementary business or a joint venture to tackle work you don’t have the resources for on your own? • Actively sell. Don’t just take orders. Businesses that are content to simply take orders are less likely to survive, let alone grow. • Retain existing customers through good service and explain to your staff why the lifetime value of customers makes this effort worthwhile.

• Review your credit limits if sales to a particular customer go up significantly and consider a credit check. If they are stable and worthwhile customer, increase their limit or find out what else you can do for them. • Maximise the value of your sales. Consider moving up market and providing a premium product and service. Add features to products if the perceived value to the user is greater than the cost to you. • Keep your product or service up-to-date. If

appropriate, extend your product range or work to ensure it stays ahead of the competition. • Compare your price and quality with competing products or services. Aim to charge a full price and offer value for money from the extras you provide, such as after-sales service, installation and training or bundled extras. • Focus your efforts on your most profitable customers. Look after the customers who place large or frequent orders, pay the full price on time and are low maintenance.

Wellington’s Way

Cooroy VIEW Club

With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington WILD Dogs officer for Nambour district: It’s good news that out of all Queensland, the government has identified the importance of employing a designated wild dog officers for the Nambour region. In Parliament during the last sittings I thanked the Minister for recognising the role that the State Government has to play in assisting Councils and our community in managing the wild dog problem. The State Government is a significant land holder in our area ranging from National Parks to Crown Land. Agriculture Minister John McVeigh has told me that he is currently recruiting five officers for Queensland, and he recognised the importance of one of those officers to operate from Nambour. Grants ease flood damage burden: There’s good news for two Cooroy sporting clubs which will receive grant funding to carry out flood damage repairs, through the State Government’s Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program. The Cooroy Golf Club will receive $15,203 toward repairs to damaged fairways, pathways and a causeway, and the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club will receive $4900 to repair damaged stall and arena fencing, and to replace signage and arena sand. Sporting grants: Local clubs who achieved sports funding in the last round of State Sport and Rec and Rec Disaster Funding include: Nambour and Hinterland Australian Football Club $25,000 to repair a playing field and drainage at the Palmwoods field; Woombye Soccer Club $24,725 to repair damaged fields and install improved drainage; Cooroora United Football Club (at Cooroy) $25,000 to repair field lighting; Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club $25,000 to resurface damaged field; Nambour Bowls Club $2,625 to replace damaged equipment; Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled $11,000 to repair fences, telephone line, drainage and access road; Palmwoods Warriors Football Club $22,700 to re-

pair damaged playing fields; Nambour Rugby League Club $25,000 to repair goal posts and replace padding and repair damaged playing fields. Kindergarten grants announced: I would encourage all local kindergartens to look into the new grants program for kindergartens to see if they are eligible for funding. The enhancement grant funding will fund: new equipment and resources; promotional events to increase enrolments; and/or minor maintenance and repairs. Eligible kindergartens can apply for enhancement grants of $10,000 per kindergarten room, with applications close on July 11. Eligible long day care services can apply for enhancement grants of $5,000 (per service basis), with applications closing on August 10. Additionally, a Renovation and Refurbishment Grant for kindergartens will provide non-recurrent grant of $50,000 to $200,000 for eligible services to renovate, refurbish or upgrade their premises (closing July 27). An Essential Upgrades Grant for Not-forprofit Early Childhood Education and Care Services closes on August 8. Sport grants for clubs and disadvantaged youth: The newly-announced Get in the Game funding program is good news for young sporting enthusiasts and local sporting clubs catering to young athletes. COOROY RAG

Paul Bone, of Bone Lawyers in Cooroy, has announced that from 1st July 2012 the firm is amalgamating with Cartwrights Lawyers of Noosa Heads, to continue under the long established Sunshine Coast banner of Cartwrights Lawyers. Bone Lawyers commenced practice in Cooroy in 1991 as a general practice and Paul Bone says in that time it has become necessary, with the enormous and continuing changes to legislation, to more and more specialise in particular areas of practice. Paul Bone says that through numerous transactions over the last 21 years between the two firms, and through professional development contact with the lawyers from Cartwrights, it became apparent to Cartwrights and ourselves that the merging of the two practices brought together our different strengths. Cartwrights have recently joined with Ray

Better off today REMEMBER 1984? John McEnroe won Wimbledon, Bob Hawke was Prime Minister and the shoulder pads of Dynasty reigned. Whatever the memories, it may surprise you to learn that the average household is now $224 better off each week. Australian household income is outpacing the cost of living over the longer term, with disposable incomes increasing 20 per cent since 1984, according to the latest AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report Prices these days! The cost of living in Australia. However, with our rising expectations and busier lives, it may not always feel like it. The report explores how living costs have changed since 1984. It finds that average income growth for Australian households across all income and socio-economic groups more than covered the cost of living over this period. Australians earning income from investments – typically self-funded retirees – did particularly well, with income growth of $547 per week above their living costs over the period. This was largely due to strong dividend growth from shares, property and superannuation income. But cost of living pressures continued with strong price growth since 1984 across everyday essentials, including electricity by 253 per cent, rent prices by 223 per cent, mortgages by 256 per cent, petrol by 208 per cent and public transport costs by 287 per cent. This price growth was partially offset by dramatic drops in audio visual and computing equipment, which now cost one tenth what they did in 1984, while average prices for clothing, footwear and major household appliances have changed little, and are often lower today. Top five findings 1. Australians are spending more on discretionary items

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management* The highest income households are spending around 30 per cent on basic necessities and 45 per cent on discretionary items, while the lowest income households, such as pensioners, devote a surprisingly high 30 per cent to discretionary items, such as restaurant meals and holidays. 2. Incomes have outpaced the cost of living When households are split by main source of income, we find that all households, on average, easily cover the cost of living increases. The big winners are those who own their house outright, with their incomes rising by 25 per cent between 2003-04 and 2009-10, compared to 17 per cent for both renters and those with a mortgage. 3. Increased government payments have made a difference Increased government payments to pensioners are likely to have contributed to the strong gains in households whose main source of income comes from the government. This group saw incomes rising above the cost of living by $69 per week over the six years up to 2009-10. 4. The cost of goods and services, and pensioner pressures Considerable attention is being paid to cost of living pressures facing pensioner households. Pensioners are often considered to pay large portions of income on electricity and essential food items, both of which have grown sharply in price. 5. Standard of living has increased on an international level Australians have it better than most, especially in comparison with recession hit Europe. The report shows that while our prices are higher than most countries, our incomes and general standard of living are also very high. On balance, we’re better off. So maybe it’s not ‘prices these days’ that are out of control,

but rather the aspirational pressure we put on ourselves as a society. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. COOROY RAG The Camphor Laurel Group

Cooroy Probus Club

Probus members with Du and staff at the newly re-opened Cooroy Chinese restaurant THE winter chill has not kept members of the Cooroy Probus Club indoors. They have maintained their monthly dinner outings, supporting local restaurants. Our planned visit to the Cooroy Chinese was delayed several months by the devastating storm that removed the roofing. Du and her staff certainly appreciated us creating a full house situation when the doors opened again for business in June. Excellent service, great food and good fellowship was enjoyed by all who attended. May found us at Cybil’s at Cooran where generous servings of gourmet food had us promising to return. This week blessed with a near perfect winters day, Probus members enjoyed a seafood lunch on board the Star Princess as they cruised along the Mooloolaba River. Throughout the trip, Captain Kayden entertained us with a good mix of local trivia and gossip. Interested in joining our Probus Club? Just ring the membership officer John Pluck on ph 5485 0415. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at the Cooroy RSL.

Some of the items that the Camphor Laurel Group produce WHEN the Cooroy Mill closed, Stan Ryan and Col Gunson took a proposal to the Lower Mill Task Force and Council. All parties were interested in having a timber related industry in Cooroy, as opposed to general wood working. The idea was to have a Community venture run and operated by volunteers. The proposal was to collect the Camphor Laurel, which is a declared weed and make it into a value added items. This was to be done by milling the timber into suitable lengths to produce a large assortment of goods. These might include such things as tables, cutting boards, roll holders, bowls, spatulas and any other useful items. All these products and more can be seen at the library and the shop at our

building located on the corner of the lower mill site. We also have ladies who take the items around to local area markets and community events etc. Currently there are 35 members who donate their time between Monday and Friday mornings making and or learning to make items for sale. The group has been operating now for about 6years and is always looking for new members, experienced or beginner, to take part in this worthwhile cause. So if you are looking for something to do any morning Mon-Fri, 8.00 am to noon, come down to the Shed on the corner of Lower Mill Rd (opposite ATV Solutions), or contact Stan Ryan on Mobile: 0428 384 012.

with Sergeant Mal Scott AHHHHH! The challenge of policing! A Police Service responding to complaints by members of the public regarding speeding motorists in the newly completed Garnet Street town bypass and a member of the public writes a letter to the Cooroy Rag Editor voicing his disgust at the fact that police should waste their time enforcing this speed limit. To add injury to insult, the officer who is assigned to patrol this section of road is then called a jerk for responding to the resident’s concerns. For those of you that can see the bigger picture and for the many supporters of the police in this town who have contacted me in support of enforcing the speed limit, thank you for your support. The very simple and inescapable truth of the matter is that if you don’t want to get a speeding infringement then don’t speed. Simply! If the Author of the above-mentioned letter would like to discuss his other points in his letter I would encourage him to either attend the station in person or phone me. The Cooroy Pony Club has been targeted by kids in the past month with several burglary offences occurring and the clubs canteen products stolen. Most of us would be aware that the Pony Club has fallen on tough times of late with the Cooroy floods decimating the club house and surrounds and it has only been through the dedication and hard work of the club members that things are slowly getting up and running again. Police patrols of the area have increased but can I ask the public to keep an eye on the club and if kids are seen hanging around the vicinity of the club to please call the police so we can deal with the situation. The instance of children shoplifting in businesses around town continues to be a problem. Kids as young as 8 have been caught stealing so shop keepers need to be very alert for this

behaviour and watch kids closely and if they appear to be up to no good then they probably are and if they have no money and not intent on making a purchase then ask them to leave the store. Children and Adults caught stealing from shops should be aware that the shop has the right to then ban them from the store and then prosecute them for trespass should they re enter the store. Thank you to the two sets of parents who voiced their support for police after reading my police report last month. Both stated that they went through tough times with their boys in regarding bad attitudes to driving with both laying awake at night in dread of receiving a visit from the police with bad news such was their boys attitude to driving. I’m very pleased to report that both boys seem to have turned the corner with a combination of parental guidance and past police intervention which sometimes seemed harsh but has definitely worked. With the drop in temperature and the short winter days the numbers at the Cooroy Blue Light Disco have waned. The Disco is a non profit organisation which is staffed with volunteer police and community members intent on giving kids a safe night out with no alcohol or drugs and also give parents an opportunity to have a pleasant meal out without the kids. Without parents making the effort to bring their kids to the disco, the disco will cease to exist so please make the effort and bring your kids along even if it means braving the cold conditions. We now have a fairy floss machine as well as what has been described as the best video, light and music production on the Coast with DJ Mike Nielsen and his business called Capital Video Roadshow all for the minimal cost of $5:00 a head. The kids have an absolute great time when they come which is always great to see.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years

by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North LIKE all regions across Australia, depending on the time of year, prevailing weather or circumstances such as location beside a major highway, there is the risk of a disaster or emergency happening on the Sunshine Coast. If you are fit and healthy it is your responsibility to prepare your home, yourself, your pets and others to minimise disruption to your lifestyle. It is recommended you prepare a survival kit to sustain you for a minimum of three days. To better understand the history of severe weather in your suburb, visit the www.hardenup.org website for a snapshot of the weather records from the Bureau of Meteorology. On this website you can see 150 years of local severe weather history in your area. After understanding the weather patterns in your area, you can use the planning tool to prepare your home, pets, family and community for major weather events that lie ahead. Together we can protect Queensland. Everyone living on the Sunshine Coast

needs to understand how to prepare for risks, stay informed and how to respond when an emergency threatens. The website www.bom.gov.au will also give you information about current cyclones, previous cyclones and their impacts. Despite precautions taken, everyone recognises that it is never possible to eliminate all risk of flooding and flood damage in the region. However, by making yourself aware of the characteristics of flooding in your local area you can reduce the risks. So to find out about the flood risks of specific areas of the Sunshine Coast, visit Council’s website http:// w w w. s u n s h i n e c o a s t . q l d . g o v. a u / sitePage.cfm?code=flood-maps. Our next intake of new members will be on 14 July. THINKING inside the box will soon make life a lot easier for hundreds of children in East Timor. Cooroy State School students have assembled hundreds of educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 of primary school age. The area also caters for other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies. With the help of Bendigo Community Bank and Rotary Club, Sao Miguel was identified 5 years ago as a community school with no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. Each parcel donated by the kids from Pacific Paradise State School will be a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student to the child opening it at the other end. What’s more impressive is that the 500 shoe boxes expected from Pacific Paradise on Wednesday will join one thousand others from Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of more than 1,000 kids. “This is the third year we have chosen to support this project with our local Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Rotary. We’re delighted to continue and annual program that started in 2008. Then, 600 shoe boxes made their way to Timor in time for Christmas, and now we’re looking at sending more than 1,000 shoe boxes over to an area that wants for an education we often take for granted here on the coast. It’s a great team effort across 3 coast schools and Bendigo Bank and Rotary have just been amazing to work with,” Cooroy State School principal Jenny Easey said. “It’s great for all students to get involved and to give something back. Our student leaders have been actively involved with the project this year and all our students have had a

ball putting the care parcels together. It’s going to be great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families too. Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” she said. “Every shoe box is personally decorated and had items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box. It was quite the moment when the kids held up their boxes at our school assembly,” Ms. Easey concluded. Cooroy Community Bank manager, Fiona Hutchings says she feels the project continues to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones. Last year the shoe boxes arrived and more than 3,000 kids turned up to receive one, so the need is there and we’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material directly to the place where it’s needed most. “This project is about community partnership. We’re delighted to collaborate with the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy, Noosa and Mooloolaba on this project. Noosa Van Lines get the boxes to Melbourne and then Rotary get the shoe boxes to the school once they land in Timor Leste. Without each of us doing our part it wouldn’t work,” Ms. Hutchings said. Everyone involved in the project will then look forward to the video and photos of the boxes being opened in a few months, and thoughts are now turning to working through other coast schools to widen the support of the project. Interest continues to be expressed in bringing some of the Sao Miguel students to state schools on the coast in coming years to advance their learning even further.

Volunteer heroes

Happy Birthday to our little mate, Will Scott who turned 3 on June 16th love and cuddles from Murray and Janet xxx Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, July 4, 2012

THE Cooroy Rag shall be doing a regular segment on our local “heroes” - our amazing volunteers! Those people that give to their organisations and provide services and activities for our community, who inspire the rest of us, and make Cooroy such a wonderful community. For every person featured, Locale will be shouting a dinner for two to that volunteer as a small “thank you” from everyone. Ian Hardcastle, President of the Noosa District Junior Rugby League is an amazing person. He volunteers so much time at the Club, from clearing a blocked toilet, lighting the chip cooker, being a games controller to referring games all whilst being the President. He never complains and is always the first person you call on when things get tough. He also helps out numerous other community organisations in his spare time! Nobody knows just how many hours this man puts in at the Club – he is a very quiet achiever and has an awesome attitude. We love our Iannyboy and cannot recommend this man highly enough for a local heroes award. He is definitely our hero.

dining & entertainment What’s on at your clubs

WINTER is always perfect to take up new interests, try some new dishes and have a go at some free fun, so come on down to one of your local community or sports clubs and “have a go!” The Sport & Rec duo has found some new initiatives and freebies for all of the family to test run a new sport to get over the chill! Cricket will be gearing up in August for the season and are looking for some lads to replace those that have had to go away working, and Football (go Cooroora United!) will be licking some wounds from a hard season and talent scouting for some Beckham “wanna be’s” for the next season. Congratulations to the Dolphins who have won a grant to heat the pool so you can enjoy swimming all year round, what a fantastic addition for the community. The Pony Club have in the pipeline a new “Adopt a Pony” program where children and adults without horses can come along to Musters and develop their passion either on the ground or on board! This will be a wonderful way to ‘come and try” this exciting sport. Gymnastics have been extremely busy and have a couple of spots for those that wish to seriously “bend it” , and Basketball have a great need for some under 10’s for their Mini Hoops Program. Badminton and Bowls are flexible all year round sports for any age, and with often 3 generations playing in the same team it really does get the competitive juices flowing. Volunteers are in VERY short supply in Cooroy at present, and there is an urgent

call out for all ages to put something into your community by signing up to help in any way with these groups. You can call the Clubs direct on the following numbers: Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Jesse 0418 975 939; Cooroy Badminton Kris 0407 001 845; Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Jane 0437 534 749; Cooroora United Melissa 0409 499 469; Cooroy Horse & Pony Club Peta 5447 9636; Noosa Basketball Nick 5447 1999; Cooroy Bowls Bevan 0407 570 318. The RSL has been quiet during these tough economic times but busy with it’s volunteer works – the Community bus has been replaced after its “swim” during the floods and damages to the Clubhouse repaired. The negotiations with Council regarding the Car parking behind the Hall continues, and the fund raising to upgrade the Memorial Hall is progressing to where there is now a call for interested individuals and Community Groups to participate in/manage Working Groups in the following sectors of the Project: a) Eco Sustainabilty – Lets keep it green! b) History and Memorabilia to Remember c) Adult Training – Providing the best in Hospitality personnel to the Region d) Tourist Information Centre – Lets get Cooroy on the Map e) Sharefarmers Program – Utilising excess land for economic growth f) Events and Culture – Bring Theatrics to the Street? g) Business Mentoring – Assisting our business = better economy h) Farmers Network and Virtual Market – Buying Local Made easy i) Youth Portal – Kidz Biz The Hall will be a wonderful Hub for the

Community, and has the ability to address a multitude of need. If you or your group would be interested in progressing programs and projects either as above or that has not been included, please contact Sandy Bolton on 0405 483 579. The Opal Street volunteers continue to build on their works with a new Herb Garden courtesy of Jim, and projected edible entrance! They will also be ugrading the club house surrounds with new plantings and a lick of paint. The venue is starting to be well recognised as a wonderful place for all kinds of events and functions, and has morphed from it’s original Italian base to a menu that is Cooroy Country, infused from the surrounding Hinterland with fresh produce, and gluten & preservative free sauces. The crew have enjoyed this evolution in response to local’s requests, and look forward to further feedback from Kris’s Test Kitchen Recipes! Head along this winter and enjoy a game of cards, Sudoku or Memorama on Thursday nights, or listen to some Soul Music once a month. This is a definite “home away from home” and perfect for any gathering at any budget. Currently there is an urgent need for volunteers for a variety of projects in which to assist the clubs. Volunteering is fun and very rewarding, and a great way to meet new friends and utilise your skills. If you have a bit of time to spare please contact Sandy on 54476051. She looks forward to meeting you! For more information on any of the above please call the Clubs or the vegetables and meat. Antiques fair growing as Pomona attraction

Antiques and collectibles take over Pomona Memorial Hall THE Pomona Antiques and Collectibles Fair, held over the King of the Mountain weekend in the hinterland town, promises to be bigger than ever this year. The fair, a fund-raiser for Pomona and Districts Meals on Wheels, is run by a big team of volunteers led by Clive Ford, a local restorer of antique furniture. It is held in the Pomona Memorial Hall, and this year will extend into the room on the lower floor of the building. “As well as dealers filling the hall and the stage we’ve got four more sites downstairs,” Clive said. “About 20 dealers have booked - all people with a reputation for quality – and based on previous attendances we’re expecting more than 1500 people to visit over the two days.” Toys and tools, clocks and crystal, military badges, antique prints and paintings, furniture and fishing reels, books and coins, jewellery and fine

china, dolls and lace. You name it, someone collects it, and it’s likely to be among the items on offer at Pomona. The event will be the sixth annual “A&C” at Pomona and the Meals on Wheels kitchen in the hall will again be serving a great range of light refreshments including home-made pies, cakes and other goodies. The volunteers of Pomona and Districts Meals on Wheels provide a service covering not only Pomona but also Cooroy, Eumundi, Kin Kin, Boreen Point and Cooran and the Fair is an important contributor to the costs of running the service. The Sixth annual Pomona Antiques and Collectibles Fair will be open 8am to 4pm on Saturday, July 21, and 9am to 4pm on King of the Mountain race day, Sunday, July 22. Entry is $4 for adults, $3 concessions and accompanied children free. Enquiries, 5485 2028.

Transform Your Life with Power Vinyasa Yoga BEAT the winter blues‌‌Get fit, lose weight, gain more clarity and calmness in your life with Power Vinyasa Yoga. Yoga has been known to reduce and relieve stress. With a regular power yoga practice, you will learn to respond rather than react to different life situations. In its simplest form, vinyasa means flow. Hence, it is a power flow practice that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow with breath. More than just a physical practice that is going to sculpt your body and increase your fitness, power vinyasa yoga will strip away all the debris and layers that have been concealing your authentic self. It challenges you to step up to your edge and pull up whatever is inside you that needs to be healed and released. It is going to be challenging but rest assured that even if you had never set foot on a yoga mat, you will still be able to do it. Whatever body type you are or level of fitness you are at, this yoga is for

everyone. Each body will take the postures differently and you will become your own teacher in your practice to know when to push, when to go that little bit further and when to rest. Using your breath to anchor yourself to the present, to create space in your body and to let go, you will know what your body needs. Are you ready to step up and to transform your life? Currently, we practice every Thursday from 6.30pm – 8pm at the Anglican Parish Hall (corner of Tewantin Road and Miva Street). Morning classes on Tuesday & Thursday from 9am – 10am and an additional evening class at 6.30pm will begin on Tuesday 10 July. All classes are by donation of a suggested amount of $10. Donation does not mean free. It is an exchange, a gift. So give more or less, whatever you can afford. Yoga is for everyone. Namaste

Hearing Breakthrough

NEW - A hearing device that is less noticeable WKDQ D KHDULQJ GLI¿FXOW\ WOULD you like to hear better? Technology just released allows you to do so. This technology has received widespread coverage in the news. And people are getting amazing results. Hearing industry experts agree it is the biggest improvement in hearing technology since the release of digital hearing devices. And research shows it can greatly improve your quality of life. The patented technology shifts you into a world of clarity. A world where you understand what is said. And a world where you’re aware of your surroundings. It allows you to hear better on the phone. Voices come through smoothly and clearly. Everyone can watch TV at the same volume. You can set the TV to the level others prefer and still follow what’s said. Soft sounds are heard clearly. You’ll hear the whisper of a child’s voice. And the sound

of footsteps from a distance. Loud noises are decreased. So your hearing sounds as natural as possible. 3HRSOH ZLOO ÂżQG LW HDVLHU WR talk to you. You’ll understand what they say. And you’ll respond correctly. Attending large gatherings will be enjoyable again. You’ll no longer be distracted by low level background noises. And you’ll have more energy to understand, as listening will require less effort. Robert Ryan, a long time hearing device user, has experienced great success with the new technology. He said: “Oh there was no question, once I had them for WKH ÂżUVW VHFRQGV , NQHZ that I wasn’t going to let these things out of my ears.â€? “I was amazed how well I adapted to them. I can actually hear people coming up behind me and talking to me. The only time I take them out is when I go to sleep.â€? In summary, the technology helps you stay connected to the world around you. This patented technology is available at Acoustic Hearing Clinics. Acoustic Hearing Clinics was established in Cooroy in 1998. All clinics are family owned and operate with traditional values. Their staff believe in treating you well. They also believe that getting to know you is the best

way to respond to your hearing needs. People who have switched from large, multinational or chain clinics say they now get treated personally. They also say they were offered a wider choice of hearing devices and got better results. Hearing decreases naturally over time. A personal insight into personal training WHEN Kay first ‘walked’ through the door of The Workout Shed, she was having mobility problems, knee issues and spending a small fortune on physiotherapy and the like. This is her honest account about the change in her life since January. “Ask any of my friends and they would say I would be the last person to get involved with personal training or even a gym - let alone love it. “I was lucky enough to win a session with Russ in a raffle – obviously the time was right! As I couldn’t convince him that an hour down at the local, with a wine or two, would suit me just fine, he insisted I turn up at The Workout Shed one morning last January. “Although I’d been quite with walking my dogs each day as my main activity to keep fit and well,

Kay pictured with Russ (personal trainer at the Workout Shed) the session with Russ was quite an eye opener - no strength, no balance and definitely no stamina. “All these things I found out about my body under his careful and undivided attention. I signed up for a full series of sessions as I walked out the door. I am now on my second set and still loving it. My goals were quite simple: get off the floor without doing the crab walk; bending at the knees; standing on one foot (without falling over); tone my muscles and develop strength; being a fitter 50 something. All now achieved! My husband has even commented on the different way I am walking and bending….so much surer of myself on the earth. “I look forward to my weekly session with Russ. Every session is different, with Russ designing activities to develop my fitness and form. Weights, rowing, bicycling, kettle bells, squats, lunges and the dreaded plank are all a part of his plan for me to strengthen and grow under his every watchful eye. “Russ wouldn’t let me lift a weight until I was lifting the broomstick with the correct technique. His thorough understanding and attention to my physical limitations, and his persistence in getting me do it right, have resulted in fantastic progress without injury or strain. He knows how much, how many and how long that is perfect for me. “I can’t say enough about how Russ’s weekly routines have and continue to change my life.” A definite fan – Kay Williams PS: The Detox box (free of charge with Personal Training at The Workout Shed) is a must after a session with Russ – I thoroughly recommend it & my body feels the benefits too! health Contact lenses – a safe alternative to glasses Local optometrists, Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod say, “Contact lenses are a safe and convenient alternative to spectacles, provided you follow the instructions given by your optometrist and replace and clean them regularly.” There are now 800,000 people who regularly wear contact lenses in Australia. Advances in technology including the materials they are made of and the designs of the lenses have made it possible for most people to wear contact lenses successfully. “There are two main types of contact lenses. Hard lenses are usually made of rigid plastic and cover only part of the cornea. Soft lenses are made of a soft and flexible water-absorbing material that conforms closely to the shape of the eye. Soft lenses worn on a frequent replacement schedule (referred to as disposable lenses) are the most common form of lenses prescribed nowadays” says Jenny. “The type of contact lenses that are prescribed will depend on your eye health, vision problems and the shape of your eyes. Your vision requirements at work, social events and hobbies will also need to be considered. For people who do lots of sport contact lenses may be ideal” she adds. Contact lenses that are worn just once and disposed of at the end of the day are referred to as Daily Disposables and they are a popular and particularly convenient way to wear contact lenses. All other contact lenses need to be removed, cleaned and disinfected in order to remove micro-organisms that can cause infection,

however advances in technology have meant that some people are now able to be fitted with extended or continuous wear contact lenses. These lenses are made from materials that effectively transmit oxygen to the eye. This means the lenses can be safely worn for extended periods including overnight. Heather reminds us that “It is important to seek professional advice when considering contact lenses as there are many variables that need to be considered. A prescription for contact lenses differs from a spectacle prescription and a thorough examination is essential for the most comfortable and effective fit. The examination includes measurement of the corneal size and shape, pupil size and eyelid contour.” Contact lenses are a popular form of vision correction and in some cases can give better vision than spectacles for particular conditions such as severe shortsightedness, longsightedness or astigmatism. “Lately the designs of progressive powered contact lenses available for the over-40s have also improved greatly. “I myself have been wearing contact lenses successfully for the last 30 years and have continued that success with the latest designs of progressive powered contact lenses” says Jenny. For further information on contact lenses or to arrange an appointment contact optometry@cooroy on 5442 5555. optometry@cooroy can be found at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy.

Preventing Golfing Injuries YOU only have to drive past the golf course on a Saturday morning to realise the popularity of golf as a sport and leisure activity. It has a range of health benefits due to the walking undertaken whilst playing, but like any sport, injury can also occur. Like other sports, most injuries occur due to a lack of warm up, poor technique or poor equipment. With golf, another risk factor is time spent playing. The more often you play, the higher your risk of injury is - especially if you are playing competitively or professionally. So what can you do to minimise your risk of sustaining injury at golf: • Have appropriate equipment: If you are starting out at golf, it would be wise to

seek professional advice on equipment so that it is right for you. Clubs and shoes need to be matched to you individually. • Ensure correct technique: Most golf injuries are caused by poor technique or hitting the ground instead of the ball. An investment in some coaching by a professional will go a long way to ensure you stay pain free and out on the course. • Warm up and cool down adequately. Like all sports, getting the body prepared for golf is essential. Some brisk walking followed by appropriate stretches will ensure that the muscles are warm and supple to avoid injury. Similarly, some gentle stretches at the end of the game will help you recover for your next outing on the greens. Specific stretches for golf can

Am I too old to exercise? IF you’ve ever thought you aren’t standing as straight and tall as you once did, find walking up a flight of stairs to be a strain at times or you groan when reaching for the arms of a chair as you slowly get up from sitting, you aren’t alone. “We don’t stop exercising because we get old, we get old because we stop exercising,” says Lee Smith from Make a Difference Health and Fitness. Older adults hurt themselves more through inactivity than through activity. Our strength, flexibility, balance and endurance wither when we don’t exercise. Exercise will enable you to fully engage in life - adding years to your life and life to your years! With definitive research demonstrating that activity helps forestall cognitive decline (dementia) and that being fit keeps people healthier longer, it’s no wonder that more of our aged population are signing

up for personal trainers, group exercise classes, boot camps, and walking groups. Maintaining at least moderate activity is a key component in a positive health regimen. This will combat or prevent weightrelated diseases, heart disease, anatomical and structural impairments, hypertension, osteoporosis, cholesterol, Alzheimer’s, sexual performance issues, loss of muscle mass and decreased sociability. To prevent normal biological changes caused by aging, seek kinder, gentler workouts; slower and longer warm-ups and cool-downs; and exercise routines that emphasise diminished risk of injury while promoting posture, strength, endurance, flexibility, agility and balance. There are several types of exercise that are important – cardio, strength training, flexibility training, balance training and core training. Strength training is exercises that are designed to increase muscular strength and endurance including resistance training with machines or free weights. Flexibility training involves stretching and range of motion exercises. Balance training helps with stability and involves exercises such as backward and sideways walking, heel and toe walking or using a workout ball or balance pad. And core training is exercises that strengthen your abs and other muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis and run the entire length of the torso. So the answer to am I too old to exercise is No! It might seem overwhelming but there are lots of options available and help is on hand. $50 000 for improved Optometry Services in Cooroy

Dr. Adam Roache (Chiropractor)

7 Garnet St, Cooroy 5472 0808 www.lechiro.com.au

PATIENTS in Cooroy will benefit from improved services after the Federal Government funded the purchase of a new OCT for Optometry at Cooroy, Senator for Queensland, John Hogg announced today last week. The Government is investing $50 000 in the purchase of the OCT equipment so that local residents will have better access to quality health care. “While rates of some chronic disease are high for patients living in rural and remote areas, they often find it harder to access the level of health care they require, said Senator Hogg. “The Gillard Government is committed to providing access to quality health care to Australians where they need it, when they need it. According to the National Strategic Framework for Rural and Remote Health, rural areas have higher rates of high blood pres-

sure, diabetes, and obesity as well as poor dental, antenatal and post-natal health. Senator Hogg said providing health infrastructure, either as capital works or as equipment, was essential to improving these statistics. “Funding for the purchase of this equipment is another example of the Gillard Government’s commitment to setting up new rural health services and improving existing facilities. “The OCT equipment will enable visualisation and assessment of the retina, optic disc and anterior eye and will enhance optometry services in the Cooroy region, he said. Funding was awarded to Optometry at Cooroy under Round 6 of the National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program, and is part of $8.7 million being directed to projects across Australia. Funding is recommended by the independent National Assessment Panel.

DEBBIE would like to remind people that with the onset of winter, looking after your Immune System is the number one priority.

Regular Bowen treatment can enhance your immunity, strengthening your body to prevent illness and disease. Balance throughout the body is important and the lymphatic drainage that occurs with treatment is only one of the ways that will help the body ward off chills.. If you or the children succumb to illness, Bowen is excellent for clearing congestion in the ears, nose and throat and sinuses. Fine tune your body and it’s responses with homeopathically prepared tissue salts . Debbie is qualified to dispense these to suit your needs. Pleased to be working at Cooroora Family Health in Pomona, Accredited Bowen therapist Debbie Newman said this link between Medicine and Allied Health is a giant step forward and sets Pomona ahead of other Medical Practices. The support and recognition given by Dr Ann Buchan is inspirational and can only lead to better health for the whole area. Call 0438 861 107 for an appointment.

Get active and healthy for only $2! ON Monday and Friday from 11.30am to 12.30pm there is Lift for Life at Cooroy which is a unique strength training program specially designed for the individual and conducted in small groups with three distinct eight week phases. On Wednesday from 11.00am to 12.00 noon at Cooran Memorial School of Arts and from 1.30pm to 2.30pm at Cooroy CWA Hall and there is Heartmoves.

This is a low to moderate physical activity class which includes aerobic activity, weightbearing or resistance exercise, balance and stretching. All classes are currently open for concession card holders only and are only $2.00! For more details and registration for both of the above programs, please contact Lee Smith from Make a Difference Health & Fitness on 0407 597 748.

real estate Million dollar views - truly irreplaceable

COOROY RAG

THE panoramic views from 75 Northmount Rd take you to the next level. These views are truly irreplaceable and they will force you to draw a sigh every time you happen to glance outside. On my last visit to this unique location I spotted 4 large ships on the horizon, beyond seamless acres of lush green tree tops and ancient mountains. Rainbow Beach sand blow and the coloured sands of Teewah are easily recognizable from this eagle’s nest location. On a clear day you will feel calm and tranquil, but during the storm season nothing will compare to the sheer thrill of watching the orchestra of lightning and thunder in natures own surround sound theatre. The large 12 year old brick and tile

Allweather home situated on 2.6 acres at the end off a culdesac, is in complete privacy with no visible neighbours from the home. This is a spacious home with 4 large bedrooms, two of which have attached living areas ideal for long term guests or family entertainment centres. The open plan living and combined lounge with 12 ft ceilings are adjacent to a large media room. A roomy walk in robe and ensuite are attached to the master bedroom. The large family kitchen with self closing doors and drawers has a walk in pantry plus a 2nd pantry and plenty of bench space. COOROY RAG

UNBEKNOWNST to many locals, the Olympic Sport of Gymnastics has been thriving in Cooroy since 1985. The Cooroy Gymnastics Club was built by local parents and business’ and has had a proud tradition of producing some great young gymnasts, not to mention large numbers of fit and healthy kids. Gymnasts from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club have kicked off

the competitive season with some great results.
