Love in shoe boxes still making a world of difference

Cooroy State School leaders celebrate the shoe box collection with Bendigo Bank and the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa BEFORE heading off on holidays, Cooroy State School students have focused on brightening the lives of some East Timorese counterparts. After weeks of care and planning, they arrived at school with hundreds of educational care packages last week. The parcels, in the form of decorated shoeboxes will make their way to Sao Miguel (St. Michael) school, about 30 minutes west of Dili. Included will be exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and

pencils as well as personal items from each student. The community school has kindergarten and primary school students, and the area also caters for several other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies. Sadly, Sao Miguel receives no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. Continued Page 4

Contemporary abstract artists. Denise McMahon, Jennifer Neubecker and Kym Tabulo draw on the traditions of abstract art as they transform their well explored theories and experiments into three distinct but complementary practices. Each drawing or painting represents a universal aim that binds the trio, and their show: that is to value both conscious and intuitive decisions into their their works. Sensitive to each other’s aesthetics, and the experience of the viewer, the three friends hope to nurture a sense of visual adventure that showcases the wonders of creative abstraction.

From Page 1 In what has become an annual tradition for Cooroy State School, the shoe boxes will gather to become a collection of 2,000 others from four Sunshine Coast schools. Principal, Richard Barrie said his school is delighted to be involved with the program that includes Tewantin, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools in partnership with Bendigo Bank and Cooroy and Noosa Rotary Clubs. “It’s been great for all students to get involved and give something back again this year. Our student leaders have been actively involved with the project and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. It’s going to be great to see the results of their hard work, and Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting these parcels into the

Love in a shoebox hands of the kids who need them most,” Mr. Barrie said. The shipment literally changes the lives of the East Timorese kids. “Every shoe box will be personally decorated and contains items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student is also enclosing something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It will add something simple, but personal to each box. It’s going to be quite the moment when the kids hold up their boxes on assembly,” he added. Bendigo Bank’s Cooroy and Pomona manager, Geoff Edwards said the project continues to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones.

(l-r) Tess Alexandroff, Geoff Edwards, Carol Johnston, Andrew Aves, Stan Quin and Ett Ison share a moment in Cooroy “Last year when the shoe boxes arrived more than 3,000 kids turned up to receive one, so the need is there. “We’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material to where it’s needed most. “This project is about community partnership.

We’re delighted to collaborate with Rotary on this project. We transport the boxes to Melbourne and then Rotary get the shoe boxes to the school once they land in Timor Leste. Without each of us doing our part it wouldn’t work,” Mr. Edwards shared. Everyone involved in the

project will then look forward to the video and photos of the boxes being opened in a few months. Interest continues to be expressed in bringing some of the Sao Miguel students to state schools on the coast in coming years to advance their learning even further.

Council draws line in the sand over coal and coal seam gas NOOSA Council has sent a clear message to the State Government that any future applications or permits for coal and/or coal seam gas would not be supported. Council last Thursday unanimously endorsed a policy position statement on coal mining, coal exploration and coal seam gas extraction that reads: ‘Noosa Council does not support any further applications for permits for coal exploration, coal mining, coal seam gas exploration or coal seam gas production within the Shire based on Council’s significant concerns regarding associ-

Page 4 - Cooroy Rag, July 4, 2018

Council will not support applications for coal seam gas exploration in Noosa’s hinterland. ated environmental and social impacts and the incompatibility of such activities with Noosa’s natural assets and lifestyle.’ “Noosa Council has a long and proud history of environmental protection, so this position

is absolutely consistent with our approach to land management,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “There are two coal mining exploration licenses that encroach into the northern end of the Noosa Shire. They

are largely contained within the Gympie region, and were granted prior to de-amalgamation. These permits are for exploration only and not production. Both expire in November 2018. “We are ensuring that we have a documented policy position while there is a possibility that future applications could be made,” said Mayor Wellington. “This position is inkeeping with the stance taken by the Cooran Earth Rights community group. They carried out a survey in the Cooran area which found 98 per cent of residents sur-

veyed were opposed to coal and coal seam gas activities in the Shire. “Noosa is a designated ‘Priority Living Area’ which means that these sorts of mining activities are generally restricted under the State’s Regional Planning Interests Act,” said Mayor Wellington. “But Council is not the head-of-power in decision-making about these extractive industries. So we need to send a clear message to the State that coal and coal seam gas extraction are incompatible with our beautiful hinterland, particularly its rural lifestyle opportunities, agricultural use and scenic amenity.”

Chamber of Commerce to run Cooroy RV Stopover COOROY Chamber of Commerce will take over the running of Council’s Cooroy RV Stopover from August 1. The new arrangements will see profits from the facility flow back into the Cooroy community, Mayor Tony Wellington said. Council has awarded the Chamber a three-year freehold permit to run the site following a recent expression of interest process. The Mayor said the previous management model, which saw a commercial

operator run the site, had proven the facility could turn a profit. “The Chamber has shown that it has the capacity, funds and resources to operate the Cooroy RV Stopover, plus it has experience running large community projects and events,” the Mayor said. “It was always Council’s vision that this facility be run by the community for the benefit of the community. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce have long been advocates for an RV facility.”

Business Risk Protection Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank THOSE who own a business think about ways of improving and strengthening their business every day. You probably don’t think about how it might cope without you, or indeed how you might cope without it. But just like every other sort of insurance, business risk protection is something you need to think about and plan for in case of future need. Try considering the 3Ds – determine value, decide strategy, document agreement. Determine the value of your business • How much is the business worth? • Is the value based on an agreed formula, dollar value or an independent assessment? Decide who should be left with what after the departure of a business party • Who takes ownership of the business? • What are the family’s needs and expectations? • What are the business’s needs and expectations? • What is the family’s ongoing role in the management of the business? • What is involved in the day-to-day management of the business? Document the agreement • A solicitor can help business owners set up a Buy/Sell Agreement to document how an outgoing proprietor’s business interest will be transferred to the continuing proprietor(s) upon a trigger event. Insurance is one of many solutions, so speak to a specialist to help you determine whether it’s the most appropriate and costeffective option for your business protection needs. When is a good time to shop for business risk insurance? If you are sitting on the fence or think you’ll get around to it some day, take

a minute and ask yourself the following questions? • What would happen to your business if you were sick or injured? • Will your current insurances, including those within super funds, be enough to payoff your debts (eg. loan repayments) and keep your family comfortable for the rest of their lives? • What is the cost to your business if you talked to a specialist about putting in place the required strategy and funding to protect you, your family and the business? If you would like to discuss your business and this type of insurance, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I can arrange an obligation free consultation with one of Bendigo Bank’s specialists. Just call into Cooroy or Pomona Community Bank branches or email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Making the most of flying solo in retirement Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

GETTING out and about is important in retirement, especially when you lose the social aspect of working. But what if there’s just you, and it means going to the theatre alone, dining at a table for one or travelling solo? Society tells us these types of activities can only be enjoyed with a companion. But one in four Australians currently live alone 1 and this figure has been rising steadily for the past 70 years, going from 8% in 1946 to 24.4% in 2016. So can we actually enjoy doing sociable things on our own? Enjoying your own company at all ages Research released in 2015 2 suggests we shouldn’t be so quick to give into our fears of how being alone in a social setting might be viewed by others. The researchers, Rebecca Ratner and Rebecca Hamilton, of the universities of Maryland and Georgetown, believe

people should be bolder about doing things alone. They might discover they enjoy the activity more than they expected to. They carried out a small test to see whether our fear of doing some activities alone was justified. They organised for university students to be invited to visit a nearby art gallery for five or ten minutes. Some students were with friends, others were on their own. They were all asked beforehand to rate how much fun they expected to have. After their visit they were asked to rate how much fun they actually had. Those who were alone expected to have a worse time than those who went with their friends. But it turned out everyone enjoyed it just as much! You could argue that it’s easier for a group of university students to enjoy a trip to a gallery just as much alone as with friends, than expe-

riencing things on your own later in life. But it doesn’t have to be the case. There are many reasons why we may end up being alone as we get older: in the 60-69 year age group, divorce or separation are the main reasons. This continues for men in their 70s but for women of this age, the main reason is the death of a partner. Getting out and about to meet new people If you’ve always lived alone, then you’ve probably learnt to embrace a full and well-rounded life on your own. It seems travel is a popular way to embrace this. In fact, 40% of solo travellers are in the plus 50 age bracket3. But if this is new territory, or you’ve never felt comfortable going it alone, there are plenty of ways you can meet new people. As well as travel, you can connect with others via volunteering, mentoring or joining community groups.

Meetup, for example, has a range of interest groups you can join to make it easy to find like-minded people in your local area. Want to know more? Whatever your household looks like, it’s important to be financially secure so you can achieve your goals. So you can be free to take that holiday or explore new possibilities. COOROY RAG Letter to the editor There seems to be a ‘head in the sand’ attitude towards Pasture Dieback and I’m imploring any property owners, whether they are farmers or not, to please report any occurrence of this disease on your property to either Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) or the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries (DAF). My 255 acre property in Black Mountain is now 90 per cent affected by this disease, but it’s not just about me. Unless people report it, the MLA won’t know the extent of it, how wide-spread it is, and I’m telling you, it’s very widespread. Thousands of hectares here on the Sunshine Coast are affected. Just because you see rolling green hills doesn’t mean they’re healthy. A lot of that greenery is just weeds. There’s no grass. I’ve spoken to farmers who are too afraid to report it on their properties in case they’re quarantined but there’s no reason to think this will happen because no one knows what’s causing Pasture Dieback, no one knows how to treat it. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has teamed up with the Queensland Government and a number of research companies to try to find the cause of the dieback and hopefully a solution. Covering up the problem isn’t going to help anyone. I know several farmers who are steadily selling off their stock because their farms are no longer sustainable, but they haven’t reported it. What has been reported is a small fraction of the true total. You can complete a survey online http:// survey.mla.com.au/ TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=pasture or phone DAF on 13 25 23. High tea for the hall

JESSICA Popple and Grace Cooper are putting down their law books and picking up their tea cups for a good cause. Jessica, a graduate law clerk at Cooroy Legal Centre, and Grace Cooper, a third- year law student at University of the Sunshine Coast, are planning a spectacular high tea for Cooroy on 29 July. “We are holding the high tea to raise funds to buy a grand piano for the hall,” Jessica said. “We hope that everyone in Cooroy will come along to what will be a wonderful afternoon in the Cooroy Hall.” Jessica, who many locals know from her years of working in Cooroy’s IGA, was recently elected secretary of the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association. She is keen to ensure that the newly renovated hall remains a focal point for

music and other important events in the town. “I spent many Anzac Days playing in the Noosa District High School band in the hall,” Jessica said. “The hall has always been an important gathering place for the community and we would like to make sure it has the best facilities available for the community to use.” Grace, who lived for years in Wattle Street before she moved to Tewantin with her family, now works part-time at Cooroy Legal Centre and is happy to give back to the town she loves. “We are looking forward to putting on a memorable high tea and an afternoon to remember for everyone in town,” Grace said. Tickets for the high tea are available from Cooroy Legal Centre in Emerald Street, Cooroy for $25. Phone Jessica on 54477 637 for more information.

FANTASTIC weather and the beautiful setting drew crowds of people to the annual Noosa Festival of Water at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald on Sunday 24th June. The Botanical Gardens are stunning, providing a magnificent backdrop to the Festival each year. Throughout the Festival, people were treated to wide range of free entertainment and activities focused on caring for our environment and local water supply. Popular activities included Geckoes Wildlife’s Martin Fingland and his menagerie of native animals including Bumpy the wombat – a festival favourite with people of all ages. Allan Burnett was swamped with people watching his reptile show and Noosa River Fishing Safari’s boat operator James Free was inundated with passengers for the short trip across the Lake to the Gerry Cook Hatchery, where Manager Darren Knowles was educating people about the breeding program for the endangered Mary River cod. Seqwater representatives were kept busy talking to people about the pending Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Program, which will see the Lake partially drained next year to accommodate construction of a new dam wall. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington officially opened the Festival, introducing the fabulous Gubbi Gubbi dancers and their storytelling. The Amphitheatre program included performances from wonderful local songstress Andrea Kirwin, a toe tapping set from six piece band the Strangest Dreamers, lovely harmonies from Kath William’s InSingC Choir, and the smooth sounds of duo Zuric and Brown. Information about land and water management was freely available from Council, Landcare, the MRCCC and Wildlife care groups, helping to improve community awareness and educate land and water managers. Kids were treated to free face painting and jumping castle, environmental art activities, stand up Paddleboarding and kayaking and the No Sound Playground! Local food vendors including the Tewantin Noosa Lions kept the crowds refreshed and the SES did a

wonderful job directing traffic and parking. Congratulations to Tegan McCrae of Mt Coolum who won the Peppers Noosa Resort voucher simply by telling the organisers what she liked about the Festival! All the feedback collected will be compiled into a report which will be available on the MRCCC’s website in coming weeks. This year’s Festival was sponsored by Noosa Council, Seqwater, Unitywater, the Burnett Mary Regional Group, Queensland Water and Landcare and Peppers Noosa Resort, and supported by around 100 volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to making the Festival a success each year. RIP Peter Glover

FOREVER the best Husband, Father, Poppy, Best Friend and Fishing Partner anyone could ever have had. Known to many locals, Peter Glover 59 battled a very long journey with Stage 4 Glioma Brain Tumour. He beat the odds and with Charlie Teo’s help got to spend a lot more time with us than we ever imagined. Peter sadly lost his battle on the 14th of June. Peter will be forever missed, we will always make him proud, always have a rod in the boat for him to “catch the biggest” and always think of him forever, such a special man. We love you Peter.

Best Little Country Markets ever THE Pomona Country Markets has been named the ‘Best Little Country Markets Ever’. Visit the great coffee and food stalls for a tasty brunch. Here you’ll find that special home made gift, fresh flowers, organic fruit n’ veg or some local art and crafts. Have a relaxing massage while the kids are kept busy in the children’s corner making creations out of natures treasures. When you’ve finished at the markets - there’s lots more to see in Pomona ... visit the local art gallery to catch the latest fabulous exhibition; the local museum to see some fascinating local history; visit the local shops, cool cafes, the various second hand shops; and rocking relics. There’s some great country trails to walk too. At noon, a silent movie awaits you at the famous Majestic Theatre, the longest running silent film theatre in the world. See the local icon Ron West play the piano for a belly laughing silent film comedy. Pomona is a great place for a day out in the country. Date Claimer - next market day July 14th. See you there.

NOOSA District State High School 2012 graduate Tremayne Gordon returned to his former school last week to share some exciting news about his upcoming theatre production, Train Lines, at the Darwin Fringe Festival. Train Lines was written and produced by Mr Gordon, who also acts alongside Sunshine Coast performer Gemma Elsom. Mr Gordon collaborated with university friends Damian Tatum and Samantha Bull who design and direct the play respectively. “The play is about two people who are at the same, but different points of their life. It’s a chance encounter at a train station. One has just quit and the other has been fired,” Ms Bull said. Protagonists Ash (Gordon) and Rose (Elsom) afternoon at the train station is prolonged when the trains are unexpectedly delayed due to weather. “The play explores the ‘what ifs’ of them getting together through a dream state, but this is not the reality,” Ms Bull said. Mr Tatum said that he liked the fact that this

production broke the rules by not being a romantic comedy. “It’s a non-com, not a romcom. A line from the play that truly sums it up is, “And I blame the film industry on my expectations of love,”” Mr Tatum said. The idea for the play came from many hours of Mr Gordon waiting for trains on his regular train commute from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre for his acting

classes. Mr Gordon hopes to bring Train Lines to the Sunshine Coast in August after the Darwin Fringe Festival. News of the production’s inclusion into the Darwin Fringe Festival 2018 Hub program excited Mr Gordon, who then invited his friends Mr Tatum and Ms Bull to design the set and direct. FOOD chains begin amongst the leaf litter and in the soil, cicadas, beetles, reptiles and amphibians for example depend on the soil and leaves to survive. Animal artist Fiona Groom has created and exhibition examining the diversity that lives on the forest floor. Fallen trees, branches and rocks are home to a diverse group of animals, this exhibition showcases what lies beneath and reminds us of what could be lost if we don’t preserve the leaf litter in our gardens, forests and bushland. “Unearth” explores that secret realm. The exhibition opens on 27th July at 6 pm and will continue on to the 4th Sept at The Butter Factory Arts Centre Cooroy

BOWEL cancer is also called colorectal cancer. It is diagnosed in over 12 500 Australians every year, and represents the second highest number of cancer deaths after lung cancer. Mostly affecting people 50 years of age and over, it can happen in younger people too and is a serious disease. But if bowel cancer or its precursors (polyps) are diagnosed early, it is often curable!! So what are the causes of bowel cancer and how can you avoid it? Unfortunately, the causes of bowel cancer are not clearly understood. However, we do know that some risk factors make it more likely that a person will develop bowel cancer. Some of these include: • Getting older – commonly affecting people aged 50 and over • Inheriting one of two uncommon genetic disorders • A personal or strong family history of bowel cancer • Having ulcerative colitis (inflamed colon lining) for more than eight to 10 years • Having a diet high in red and processed meat, drinking too much alcohol and smoking • Being overweight or obese (particularly for men) So what can you do to help reduce your risk of bowel cancer? • Regular screening • Eating a healthy diet, including plenty of vegetables and fruit and only small amounts of animal fat – researchers believe that eating a healthy diet may help to prevent as many as one

third of all cancers, including bowel cancer!! • Eating moderate amounts of lean red meat as part of a mixed diet including carbohydrates (breads and cereals), vegetables and fruit, and dairy products • Eating limited amounts of processed meats • Maintaining a healthy body weight • Exercising regularly • Not smoking or drinking too much alcohol. Following this advice doesn’t mean that you will never get bowel cancer, but it can reduce your risk and has other health benefits too. Bowel Cancer Screening involves a test for bowel cancer in people who do not have any obvious symptoms of the disease and aims to find any polyps or to find cancer early when they are easier to treat and cure. A bowel cancer screening test called a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) can detect these small amounts of blood in your bowel motion. The FOBT looks for blood in your bowel motion, but not for bowel cancer itself. This test is easy to do at home, and involves placing small samples of stool on special cards and sending them to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results are then sent back to you and your doctor. LiveLife pharmacies encourage all Australians who are aged 50 and over, who do not have symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer, to undertake bowel cancer screening.

Leave your worries behind take a yoga class THE Cooroy Yoga Community (CYC) was formed in July 2017, by 4 teachers with a passion for sharing yoga with the community. Kari, Elizabeth, Kylie and Lisa all had a desire to share the practice and benefits of yoga with as many people as possible. While Kari is currently taking a break from teaching, Michelle and Jen have now joined the community. They are all qualified teachers from different yoga teaching backgrounds, ensuring that anyone who is interested in yoga, is sure to find a style and approach that suits their individual body, mind and soul. All classes offered by CYC are flexible enough to cater for individual needs and abilities so beginners are welcome. As a community, all teachers aim to provide a peaceful and safe space where you can leave your worries and stress at the door and commit to a time and practice that allows you to listen deeply and become aware of your own body, mind and spirit. This is a space where there is no judgement, no competition, no comparison ... but a pure acceptance of who you are and where you are at, on the mat, in the moment. Regular yoga practice can help bring clarity to

the mind and assist you in dealing with your everyday life and the choices and decisions you have to make in a more balanced, confident and empowered manner. Cooroy Yoga Community will celebrate its first birthday on 11th July and would like to thank the local community for its ongoing support by offering the following birthday gifts during the week of July 9-13th. Please help them celebrate by attending any (or all) of the following classes: Tuesday 10th July: Kylie’s Gentle Yoga class @ 8.45am - $5 per person Michelle’s Nourshing Flow class @ 5.30pm – Bring a friend for free Wednesday 11th July: Michelle’s Nourishing Flow class (For Jen) @ 9.30am – Bring a friend for free Lisa’s Yin Yoga class @ 5.30pm - $5 per person Thursday 12th July: Elizabeth’s Kundalini class @ 5.30 pm – Bring a friend for free Plus – names of all those who attend any class for that week will go into the draw to win a free introductory pass. health ‘Basket Buddies’- bigger & better

COOROY RAG

FOLLOWING the success of Basket Buddies’ first 2 years, with over 500 families receiving baskets full of food and gifts, we are excited to commence 2018. Our target for 2018 is 350 baskets – 50 more than last year. Last year, the Basket Brigade were once again overwhelmed by the generosity of Sunshine Coast families, workplaces, schools and other groups who collected food items each week, for the baskets. This year we will be providing our families with recipe cards to make a main meal and desert for Christmas. The food collected by our Buddies each week will make up these recipes. The more baskets our Basket Buddies can collect the more families we are able to support. With your help, we will easily reach our 2018 target of 350 baskets. It’s easy to be a Basket Buddy and anyone can join. For just a few dollars a week, you can really make a difference this Christmas to a Sunshine Coast family in need. If you’re able to add one extra food item to your weekly shopping basket, sign up to become a Basket Buddy either via our Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/ SunshineCoastBasketBrigade ) or online at http://eepurl.com/du3oW9. You’ll then receive a food list - so you’ll know what to buy each week.

Then you just keep collecting your food items right up to the drop off/collection week in late November. The Basket Brigade team will then tally all the food collected by the Basket Buddies, and work out what they need to buy, if anything, to top up the 350 baskets. All the food donated will be packed into baskets for all nominated families/individuals, along with a gift for every family member. All baskets will be delivered by Basket Brigade volunteers right across the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, 15 December.

4 bed 2 bath 3 car pool 1132m2 Offers Over $635,000 IMPECCABLY presented inside and out, this stunning four-bedroom home on 1132sqm certainly confirms why Pomona’s Songbird Estate is such a prestigious address. Simply unpack and you’ll be ready to entertain friends from when move in, because it really is picture-perfect right down to those Pomona mountain views. Located at the end of a peaceful and private cul-de-sac, this feels like acreage living, yet it’s easy care and just walking distance from Pomona’s shops, cafes and school. The beach at Noosa is just 20 minutes away, yet this lovely home looks out over bush and has no back neighbour. Surrounded by quality homes, the fixtures and fittings are everything you’d expect in a house just five years old. The kitchen is ultra modern with stone bench tops, built-in oven, induction cook top, dishwasher, pantry and breakfast bar. The two bathrooms - one the ensuite to the master - are equally chic, crisp and clean. All four bedrooms are a good size, and all have ceiling fans. The master has a walk-in robe, while

the others have built-ins. But it’s the living and outdoor entertaining areas that will really take your breath away here. Spacious, light and white, the open plan living space opens to the awesome, tiled, undercover entertainment area. And from there, it’s straight into the glamorous glass bead-lined saltwater pool and solar-heated spa, with travertine stone tiles. Easy access to the powder room from the pool is great for family and friends. There’s mains water and power here, of course, but there’s also a handy 5000 gallon rainwater tank with a pump for topping up the pool and washing the car, and a 1.75kw solar power system. The double lock-up garage with remote control entry has direct access into the home. There’s also side access to a lock up carport to park a boat or extra vehicles, plus there is a hard stand for caravan. The pretty, easy care back yard is fully fenced, with an additional, separate dog-proof yard. Living here you will ‘feel like you’re in the country, but live like you are in town’. And you can’t beat that! For more details, contact Sam Hargrave 0425 777 121 or Phil Hargrave 0417 750 507.

Cutters Corner A drive to Kilcoy to face the top team Beachmere faced the Cutters. With a few players unavailable due to injury the task was huge. Beachmere’s large forward pack got on top early & didn’t let up. The Cutters were reduced to 12 men just before half time with the score at 30 nil to the Pelicans. The match turned on its head after an incident which saw tempers overflow & both teams having players sent off & the game being being a 10 on 10 contest. Other teams would have given up but not the boys from Pomona-Cooran. Jarred Davis got himself off the end of year nudie run by crossing for the Cutters only points. Final score 46-4 to Beachmere. Kyle Jones got the 3 points, the returning Jake Scanlan 2 & Luke Martin 1.

UPCOMING GAMES

A home game against Palmwoods . . . was the perfect tonic after the blow out the week before. The boys came out fired up & it showed with Palmwoods forced into an early error. From the ensuring set Gus Sullivan crossed & converted to make the score 6 nil. A Palmwoods try was followed by tries to Jonah Hopes-Hoggets, Jake Scanlan & a 2nd to Gus Sullivan saw the half time score race to 22-6. Handling errors marred the 2nd half & Palmwoods capitalised. They even the score to ensure a nail biting finish. A missed field goal by Palmwoods enabled the Cutters to get the ball deep into the Palmwoods end. With something special needed 3 players stepped up. Firstly Des McLeary forced an error on an early tackle. Enter Jonah Hope-Hoggets & Cody Mairu. A kick on tackle 2 caught the Palmwoods defence out. A flying Mairu grounded the ball just inside the deadball line to wrap the game up 26-22. An entertaining game for the fans who braved the cold. Des McLeary got the 3 points, Jarrod Davis the 2 points & Jake Scanlan 1 point. Don’t forget the Cutters Kitchen is open every Friday night.

SATURDAY 14th July - CUTTERS Vs Yandina @ Noosa @ 1.30pm SATURDAY 21st July - CUTTERS Vs Kilcoy @ Beachmere @ 3.30pm (there will be a bus running for this game. Check the Cutters Facebook page at www.facebook.com/officialpomona-coorancuttersrugbyleague)

THE Eumundi Dragons Under 7s took to the field at Caloundra against Brothers with a full team of 7 but no bench. The pace of the game was fast and furious for the full 30 minutes. In defence the dragons were unrelenting against some fast agile Brothers players with great tags by Brody Ruster, Billie Gunton, Fin Rivers and Daisy Walker. Zach Eaton threw himself at everything. This game will be remembered for the time the U7s really started to throw the ball around and back each other up. Some genuine team tries by Billie Gunton and Brooklyn Griggs resulted from great led up work by the whole team along with some excellent individual tries by George Hillhouse, Daisy Walker, Billie and Brooklyn. Zach and George both pounced on the loose ball, turning the advance to the Dragons. While Daisy Walker won the player of the match, the whole team deserve praise for bringing their A game. It was a team effort for the Dragons under 9’s game at USC against Brothers. Most improved player this week was Louis Samarcq who was rewarded by receiving the Player of the Week award. For the second week running five trys for the dragons were scored by Jett Herbert with Will Sparks playing fast and hard and coming close to the try line in a number of great plays. Alex Eaton tackled really well as did Ely Brumley and Zack Long. There was some great passing of the ball in this game by the dragons and it really showed how this group of under 9s are developing in their skills and are coming on as a team.

He has recently been selected in the Under 17 Sunshine Coast Football Squad to play in the 2018 Xiamen Youth Soccer Tournament in China, commencing on July 27. Hamish, who suffered some setbacks along the way to reaching his goal and has put in a lot of hard work to be selected, says he owes a big thank you to his coach, Jacob Mander. “With him I wouldn’t be where I am today,” says Hamish. “He pushed me hard and told me not to stop and work for goal. “I’d like to say to any young players that want to make this dream happen to work hard and never give up, because it will happen,” says Hamish. Hamish is a part time staff member at Cooroy IGA and a student at the Noosa Christian College.

Dave Wipple (L) & Daniel Butler (R) 24th June 2018 Cooroy Golf Club held their Open with a fantastic field of over 90 players turning up to play in chilly conditions. After the temperature rose the players were greeted with a glorious day. Despite some grumbling about players games, some good scores were carded. There were many winners on the day, but the big winners were Dave Wipple net score 68 and Daniel Butler Gross 68. Many thanks to the Ladies who helped getting the players sorted out with regards to score cards etc. The Manager and his Staff and the Ladies again put on a fabulous buffet lunch, thanks everyone.
