Endeavour Rally - Winners

Winners: Len and Steve in Car 96 “Wizard of Oz”

LEN Clark and Steve Smith were the overall course winners of the 2017 Great Endeavour Rally. This was Len’s 9th year competing in the Rally which raises funds to support people with disabilities and he was thrilled to bring home the trophy. The pair were also winners of Class (Category A). The Rally, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, raised over $330,000 for the Foundation. Len said he originally decided to compete in the Rally nine years ago after seeing a promo about it on TV. “I thought it looked like a lot of fun, and it is,” said Len, who plans to go again next year. “It’s a lot of hard work fundraising but the Cooroy community has always come through and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket, came to a trivia game or bought a sausage.” Len would like to give a special mention to the Lions Club of Noosa, LiveLife Pharmacy, Noosa Car Club, Cooroy IGA, Andrew A Grade Mechanic, Pomona Bakery, Cooroy Rag Newspaper and Elders Caboolture for their support. news Preparations underway for King of the Mountain

COOROY RAG

MOUNT Cooroora in Pomona is the scene of one of the most gruelling and challenging athletic events Australia has to offer and continues to attract competitors from around the world. As part of the King of the Mountain festival, Sunday 23 July marks the 39th anniversary of the notoriously steep 4.2 kilometre Bendigo Bank ‘King of the Mountain Challenge’ race. Proving that age is no barrier if you are fit and healthy, this year’s race will see a record set for the oldest competitor, 77 year old Frank Falappi from West Woombye who continues to compete in athletic competitions and has won many endurance events. A project of The Cooroy & Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences and competitors and spectators alike can look forward to another fun-filled event. The second Zinc 96.1FM Prince and Princess Race has already attracted many junior athletes and will be held on Saturday 22 July with the winners awarded their trophies on the main stage after Sunday’s race. Registrations are still open until 14 July. Evidence of the diversity of the festival’s attractions can be found in its jam-packed program. The festival offers something for everyone and includes other familyfriendly races, heritage markets, amusement rides, a skate park competition, local cuisine and live music all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona and in view of the majestic Mount Cooroora. Further attractions include an animal farm and side show alley. Festivities will begin early on the Sunday with the arrival of many different car clubs showing off their classic vehicles in the lead up to the big race at 2.30pm. Cel-

Heather Manders, Mark Bourne, Geoff Edwards, Leslie Saunders & Barry Stewart ebrations will continue afterwards and into the evening with live music and free entertainment. Continued funding from the Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa is testament to its enduring popularity as a hallmark community event with many local businesses also keen to offer their support through their sponsorships for the community focussed event aimed at supporting local Lions’ charities and promoting the Pomona and Noosa region. Last year the hard work of Lions volunteers over many years was recognised, and the event was awarded the 2016 Sunshine Coast

Sports Federation Event of the Year. So come and enjoy the friendly vibes, great atmosphere, lovely people and the beautiful location. Put the King of the Mountain Festival in your diary and get ready to enjoy some country hospitality and the best of what community focused events are all about. news ABW delivers valuable skills, great memories

COOROY RAG

“After being part of ABW for a decade, our relationship with the students gets stronger as we become more involved in each facet of it,” Geoff said. “The mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their endless energies and talents. ABW’s success each year is a credit to NDSHS and its co-ordinator Alison Rexa and school Principal Chris Roff. I encourage any local business owner who hasn’t been involved in ABW to find out more about the program and get involved in 2018. “Some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Geoff added. If you would like to know more about ABW or how you can support the future of the program, contact the program co-ordinator Alison Rexa at NDSHS on 5472 2234.

Team Enviro Bean celebrate their win at ABW 2017 IT’S been an incredible week for 260 students at Noosa District State High School. Working as teams through Australian Business Week (ABW), Year 11 students experienced what it’s like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. Led by mentors from working local businesses, they worked their way through the intensive program discovering the variety of skills and effort needed to be part of a successful business part of a team managing their own business. This year students ran a simulated café. Through the week, students had to form a company, assign roles and responsibilities in the company and review key business areas. Then came the decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This year’s 16 teams of 15 members also developed a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team pre-

pared a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It made for a full week but left each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. The grand champion team for 2017 was Enviro Bean. The teams’ CEO Finlay McLanachan, said the ABW experience had not only benefited his team but all who took part. “The week has been an incredible one for all of us. We learned how to work together and consider everyone’s opinions. It’s been an amazing opportunity to develop our skills in business management even though most of us haven’t had business studies as a course. We’re especially thankful to our mentors Mr. Andrew Kirkham and Mrs. Rosie Emerson, who gave their time to guide and advise us,” Finlay said. Without the support of parents, students and

teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it’s become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank

branch of Bendigo Community Bank. Senior manager, Geoff Edwards said that after 10 years of sponsorship, the Community Bank branch will be a proud supporter again in 2018.

FROM August 1st, Joe Bartola will no longer be using plastic bags in his busy fruit and Veg Shop. Joe buys his produce from local farmers and is always keen to keep his footprint light on the earth. This will be his next step in his bid to keep the environment in better shape for the next generation. Feedback from his customers has been overwhelmingly supportive, with many already using their own bags while they shop. Green bags will be available

to purchase at cost price, as well a supply of boomerang bags . Plastic bags will still be on hand, but there will be a cost for every bag and Joe is confident the amount used should be minimal as most people are on board to stop plastic pollution. As individuals, businesses and the community as a whole, Joe believes it is possible we can all make a difference and he is determined to do his bit. news A decade of shoe boxes making a world of difference

COOROY RAG COOROY State School students have done their part to brighten the lives of their East Timorese counterparts with hundreds of educational care packages. The decorated shoeboxes will now make their way to Sao Miguel (St. Michael) school, about 30 minutes west of Dili, and included exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils as well as personal items from each student. The community school has 150 kindergarten and 250 primary school students, and the area also caters for several other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies, but Sao Miguel receives no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. The project has been going for 10 years and Cooroy State School Principal, Richard Barrie said the school was delighted to be involved with the program that’s shared with Tewantin, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools. It all happens in partnership with the

Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa. “It’s been great for all students to get involved and give something back. We’re all actively involved with the project again this year and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. Our special thanks must go to Chappy Ett, Deb from our tuckshop and Robyn Mole for all their efforts in getting the boxes ready. It’s been wonderful to see the results of everyone’s hard work, and Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” Mr. Barrie said. Nearly 400 shoeboxes from Cooroy will now join more than 1,600 others from Cooroy, Tewantin and Coolum State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 2,000 East Timorese kids. “Every shoe box will be personally decorated and contains items to further the education of a child less

Geoff Edwards addresses Cooroy State School students at the East Timor shoe boxes collection fortunate than themselves. Each student has enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It’s added something simple, but personal to each box and it was quite the moment when the kids held up their boxes at assembly,” he added. Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank senior manager, Geoff Edwards said the project continues to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giv-

ing back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones. Last year when the shoe boxes arrived more than 3,000 kids turned up to receive one, so the need is there. We’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material to where it’s needed most. “This project is about community partnership. We’re delighted to collaborate with Rotary on this project. The clubs of Cooroy and Noosa have given whole hearted sup-

port to this project over many years and it is wonderful to be a part of such a superb humanitarian event. We transport the boxes to Brisbane and then Rotary collect and distribute the shoe boxes to the school once they land in Timor Leste. Without each of us doing our part it wouldn’t work,” Mr. Edwards shared. Everyone involved in the project will then look forward to the video and photos of the boxes being opened in a few months.

Underwriting? What’s that? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* WHEN financial advisers talk about insurance they often talk about underwriting. But what is underwriting and why does it matter? When you apply for insurance, insurers look at several factors to determine if they can provide you with cover and at what price. This process is known as underwriting. Much in the same way that car insurers ask about the make, model, age of your vehicle and your driving history, in the case of life insurance you usually have to submit an application that asks for information about you, including your occupation, health and lifestyle. This might be followed up by a phone call for more information, and in some cases, you may be asked to provide extra information or undertake a medical assessment. Why do insurers use un-

derwriting? Underwriting is a term used by life insurers to describe the process of assessing risk when a person applies for an insurance policy. By looking at risk factors for an individual (such as health, occupation and hobbies), an insurance company can ensure that appropriate premiums are determined, that people with similar risks pay similar premium rates, and that those people with a greater likelihood of claiming pay more for their insurance (and vice versa for people with lower risk). Depending on your risk factors, there may be an impact on the cost of your cover or what your policy covers you for. What are some of the factors insurers consider? • Age: An insurer will look at your age when as-

sessing your risk, as younger people are less likely to make a claim. • Gender: As a group, women have a higher life expectancy, are less prone to health conditions such as heart disease and stroke, are more likely to seek early medical advice and are believed less likely to engage in high-risk activities than men. • Health: If you’re in good health you pose a lower risk, so may find it easier to get cover and it may be less expensive. Your weight is one healthrelated factor taken into account during underwriting. Insurers use a measure known as Body Mass Index (BMI), along with other weight-related information such as your waist measurement, to assess whether you are overweight. People who are a healthy weight have lower

SPV Accounting more than just a tax agency IT has been 3 years since CJ Taxation Services and SPV Accounting merged. During that time many things in business and the way business is being conducted has changed. In three short years a raft of new Government regulations have been passed, tax and super legislation are changing regularly and a significant portion of business is now conducted online. Seb Vecchio from CJ Taxation Services said: “We have had to adapt to keep abreast of these changes. More and more we are moving from compliance activities to business advisory, whole of business back office work e.g. bookkeeping and other business planning activities. To reflect this change we felt the old name CJ Taxation Services was becoming obsolete. Taxation is not all we do. So to usher in this exciting time to be in business we are changing our name to SPV Accounting to reflect the broad range of services we provide.” SPV Accounting will still have the old familiar faces with Monique, Glenn, Lynda, Judy, Karen, Tracy and Seb ready to be of service to all our existing and new clients. “Our traditional services such as indi-

vidual tax returns, business tax, BAS returns and financial statements, SMSF tax and accounting will still be offered and that will not change. However, we have found many business clients are handing over their bookkeeping to us since cloud computing has become effective and efficient. In today’s competitive market businesses are wanting accurate up to date figures to base decisions on. We are therefore, looking after all of their bookkeeping, BAS, financial statement and tax returns from the original documentation. “We use all of the popular formats available e.g. MYOB, Quickbooks, Sage One, Xero to name a few. We don’t require you to use any software in particular or to change to any particular software. We work in with you and your business,” said Seb. The postal address, business location, phone number and fax number remain the same. However there is a new website www.spvaccounting.com.au and new email addresses. rates of death and illness than people who are overweight and are less susceptible to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. • Occupation: Some industries are associated with particular health risks, such as injury or developing certain cancers. For example, working with asbestos poses a higher health risk than working in an office. • Hobbies: There are a number of risks associated with certain hobbies such as rock fishing, motor racing or aviation. Other hobbies, such as non-competitive cycling or running, are not usually considered to be a high risk for insurance. Insurance can be complex, but it’s a vital element in protecting your financial future.

We felt Seb & Tracy were both deserving of the award for both their individual and joint efforts for Cooroy over several decades.

Make new friends at Cooroy Care and Share COOROY Care and Share – a seniors social group that has been running for more than 30 years – is looking to welcome new members. The Noosa Community Support-run program offers eligible clients a twice-monthly social gathering. Cooroy Care and Share group members enjoy regular morning teas, group singing, quizzes, board games, bingo and even the occasional game of mini golf. Original organiser and now-participant Val Costello, 84, said the program had been running every second and fourth Wednesday of the month since it began as a Uniting Church program in 1985. These days, Cooroy Care and Share is a program run by Noosa Community Support – a Noosa Council service – which receives Federal and State Government funding. It’s open to clients aged over 65, Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander people over 50, and those under 65, with a disability. NCS Hinterland Program Coordinator Pearl Clothier said the event was a great way for local seniors to meet new friends, and eligible new members are welcome. “Don’t sit at home on your own, don’t feel isolated, you will always be greeted with a smile and a warm welcome at Cooroy Care and Share,” she said. Transport is available for residents who live in Cooroy and out as far as Tinbeerwah. “I really appreciate being picked up and taken home by lovely warm caring staff and volunteers. I couldn’t get there otherwise if there was not transport offered,” said participant Joan Berry. Cooroy Share and Care is held at the Cooroy CWA Hall twice a month. People power on display at Pomona

THE Don’t Divide Pomona protest rally objecting to the closure of the cross town pathway over the railway tracks at Pomona has won concessions from Queensland Rail not to take action until a community consultation session is held later this month. Previously, QR said it would close the popular path linking both sides of town and then consult the community about the consequences. More than 1400 people have signed a petition calling on Queensland Rail to keep the path open. Noosa Council is backing the community and a report on the issue will be presented to council later this month. A motion passed unanimously at the 17 June public meeting called on QR to cooperate with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Noosa Council to ‘develop a pathway and connectivity study for the central town area that identifies non-car solutions for accessing shops, schools, recreational areas and nearby streets in accordance with the Noosa Transport Strategy and Queensland Cycling Strategy’. The resolution passed at the meeting said that Pomona residents believed the walkability and character of the town would be diminished by the plans QR had advanced for the closure of the cross-town pathway via the Pomona Railway Station. The meeting called upon QR to: • Abandon the planned closure of the cross-town pathway and make the existing crossing safe, consistent with national standards, for those who would use it – pedestrians, cyclists, people with a disability and those using

motor scooters, as well as those on horseback and hikers using the Noosa Trail Network. • Furthermore, it demanded that QR and TMR cooperate with Noosa Council on development of a pathway and connectivity study for the central town area that identifies non-car solutions for accessing shops, schools, recreational areas and nearby streets in accordance with the Noosa Transport Strategy and Queensland Cycling Strategy. Meanwhile, QR is resisting calls to keep Pomona’s cross-town path open, preferring to explore options for new paths connecting the railway station with alternative crossing locations at Reserve Street and Subway Avenue. The CEO of QR, Nick Easy, says that the safety of Pomona residents was the ‘number one priority’. “The current pedestrian crossing would require an upgrade to ensure its compliance with national safety standards,” Mr Easy said. “In consultation with Noosa Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, we are investigating possible footpath and road crossing options to ensure pedestrians have a safe passage to the two other nearby formal crossings at Reserve Street and Subway Avenue.” He said a decision to close the crossing would not be made until a community consultation process had been completed. This would be rolled out from mid-July. Organisers of last month’s protest rally are planning a report-back meeting to the community on Thursday 27 July.

SUPPORTERS of a Kenilworth dairy farm that offers camping as a means to stay afloat have condemned Sunshine Coast Council's threat to fine the business up to $183,150. Farmer Shane Paulger has five kilometres of river access on his property and has diversified the operation to keep the farm afloat financially by offering affordable camping . But after Council received complaints over the campgrounds Mr Paulger has now received a letter from council advising it to comply or desist or face a fine of up to $183,150 or lodge a development application. Mr Paulger suggest that the complaints were from other camping operators who had paid up for the development application process and that meeting council’s demands will leave the farm hundreds of thousands out of pocket with fees of up to $6000 $7000 per camp site across 100 sites. “They appear not to understand the (money) our little campground adds to our Kenilworth community.”

In his social media post Mr Paulger took aim at Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Greg Rogerson using council’s destruction of Buderim’s Urban Food Street as an example of the “out of touch, unsympathetic, bureaucratic Sunshine Coast Council”. “We are disgusted that the council claims to have policies supportive of farmers,” he said. “When one of the areas last dairy farming families like us who has nurtured and owned this farm for 60 years diversify our operation offering camping to keep our farm afloat financially, council’s sole aim seems hell bent on stopping camping on our farm.” Despite the threat of hefty fines, Mr Paulger said he would not back down. A list of signatures on change.org petition is growing by the minute. “The Kenilworth Camping team would hope that you, our loyal and happy campers, will continue to support us now more than ever during this battle by camping with us and keep enjoying the natural beauty of our Adadale property we call Kenilworth Camping,” said Mr Paulger.

Change time at Cooroy Rotary

The new Board of Directors. Andrew Aves, Michael Andersen, Bob McCrossin, Carol Johnston, Frank Hiscock, Claudia Andersen, Linda Morrell, Chris Durie and last but not Least Warren O’Neill On Monday 26 June 2017 the Changeover Dinner of the Rotary Club of Cooroy was held at the RSL Club in Maple Street when Andrew Aves steps down as president and passes the chain of office to Dr Bob McCrossin. “I never like looking backwards until I do, then I am amazed at how much the Rotary Club of Cooroy has achieved in the past 12 months. “In addition to our community work a staggering $28,000 has been distributed to needy causes,” said Andrew Aves, Past President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy.

“Locally our main beneficiary was Sunshine Butterflies, the disability support group based in Tewantin. In addition funds were donated to our local SES and the Black Mountain Rural Fire Service, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award students at Noosa District State High School.” “The Club achieved a Club Bronze Award for cumulative contributions exceeding $2.500 for the Rotary and the University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund that supports PhD student at the Sippy Downs Campus.” “Regionally we helped with donations to Rotary

Benevolent Society to assist those affected by the devastating fires in February in New South Wales and more recently the Club contributed to a fund assisting those affected by Cyclone Debbie, already 12 complete house units of furniture and whitegoods have been transported to the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach to distribute.” “And Globally with 360 Shoe Boxes from the Cooroy State School for deprived children inDili in East Timor and contribution to a Global Grant initiative supported by 6 Australian Rotary Clubs and 6 overseas Clubs to provide

Teacher Training in Nepal.” The Rotary Club of Cooroy recognises people who have given outstanding service to the Cooroy Community during the past year. This year the Reg and Una Bryant Award for Outstanding Community Service is presented to Sergeant Mal Scott for his bravery seeking to apprehend thieves breaking into the Mitre 10 store in Maple St. In an attempt to arrest the criminals Mal was hit by a car and after being pinned between two vehicles was treated for a crush injury to his leg. “It might be his job but it was very brave especially considering he had disturbed four people who had broken into the business. “I think we all recognise Mal is a key to the wellbeing and success of Cooroy as great and safe community,” said Andrew. The Col Stephens Award for Outstanding Rotary Service was given to Assistant Governor and Past President Carol Johnston without whom the Club would be very significantly poorer – and not just poorer financially. “Carol masterminded our major fundraising event

with the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival and was the primary organiser of the event that has enabled the Club to assist many people locally, regionally, nationally and globally,” said Andrew. Bob McCrossin was inducted as the new President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy with many new ideas to take the Club forward with guest speakers such as Double Gold Medalist, Vivienne Golding who competed in the World Masters Games in Auckland speaking in August. July Patsy Fayne one the first women cricketers in Australia will be speaking in July Through the generosity of those present on the night we are able to donate over $300 to local causes and the eradication of Polio forever. “Everyone is welcome to attend our new look meeting of the Rotary Club of Cooroy at the Community Room at the Cooroy library 1st and 3rd Mondays . The cost to include tea, coffee will be $10 and booking is essential as places are limited. Email secretary@cooroyrotary.org.au or phone Linda on 0403 172 534,” said Dr McCrossin.

Hannah lives her passion

REMEMBER the little blonde girl that used to help her father Craig fit tyres at Tyrepower Cooroy on Saturday mornings all those years ago? Well, she’s all grown up and is now making her mark on the world! Hannah Pike’s real passion in life (not tyre fitting, believe it or not!) began at age two, when she begged her mother for piano lessons, which she began the following year.

Fast-forward to 2017 through numerous medals in local eisteddfods, Sydney Opera House performances, multiple music festival performances and lessons from internationally renowned pianists from across the globe. Hannah has graduated from a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, and is currently undertaking an Honours year. She has been teaching piano and percussion at Nambour Christian College for four years, and hopes to inspire the next generation. Hannah loves giving back to the community; she recently performed at Eden Rehabilitation Hospital, and hopes to play for the local nursing homes. She is passionate about sharing her music with others, and would love for you to join her in her most exciting endeavour yet – performing the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra! The concert will be held on the 15th of July, 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at the Caloundra Uniting Church. Tickets are $25 pre-purchased (available at the Buderim Post Office or on the orchestra’s website), or $30 at the door.

Comedy night at The Imperial

PREPARE yourself for a full physical workout of the best possible medicine – laughter - when stand-up comedians Dusty Rich and Mark McConville take to the stage at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday 14 July. Dusty Rich is a comedic space-warrior riding a living volcano with one hand whipping the reins and the other gingerly fingering the lava-hot truth that flows freely down all sides – is smothering the world in comedy magma. His meteoric rise in the comedy industry is due to the fact he had learnt to ride meteors at a very young age – a mind meteor, smashing through the atmosphere of mediocre and mundane. Each show is unpredictable and hilarious, leaving audiences gasping for air. A true original, his style is manic but impactful. The mystical art of comedy bursts through his veins (and mouth) coupled with his razor sharp wit, taking no prisoners. Dusty Rich is, without question, an unnaturally naturally talented comedic anomaly. Dusty Rich has to be seen to be believed. Mark McConville has featured all of the major commercial TV channels, Comedy Channel’s ‘Home Delivered Comedy’ and radio aplenty, but is best seen live to be fully appreciated.

Mark’s approach is upfront and personal with a direct manner that engages the audience from the moment he steps on stage. Short and punchy, his gags cut to the chase. Life has seen Mark in roles as diverse as labouring, sales and emergency rescue - and he draws on what has been a life full of strange, interesting and always funny experiences. Contemporary issues such as reality TV, advertising, relationships, flying and our new found love of political correctness all feature in Mark’s show. He raises questions about fidelity, honesty and love with insight and humour. From the trouble with wheelie bins to being on the wrong end of the law, Mark revels in those everyday situations. Laughter is guaranteed. This is an adults only show. Some language and concepts may offend. TICKETS: Pre-sale $18 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811) until 4pm on the day. $25 at the door. Show starts 8pm. LAST Thursday afternoon Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Cooroy joined forces with Soul Sista a local business empowering girls to teach them some simple but effective self-defence moves. Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Cooroy and Leah from Soul Sista have been working together for months to bring this fun afternoon together for her girls. It’s most important that young people today know how to defend themselves either at school or when they are out and about, so Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Cooroy spent the afternoon showing the girls and their mums some basic self-defence moves, and judging by the laughter they had lots of fun

while learning them. Mr Habershon and his young helper Bodhi showed the girls and their mums how to get themselves out of different situations and then they got to practice them themselves. Hopefully by the end of the session they all came away remembering something that could help them in the future. Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Cooroy are now starting a fitness and self-defence class for girls and ladies only starting on Monday the 10th July 67.15pm Cooroy State Primary School in the Hall so if your interested please call 1800 840 403 to book your place.

EVER had that rising pain and burning sensation in your chest? Heartburn affects more than your physical health; it can affect your quality of life. Up to 1 in 5 Australians experience heartburn at least once a week - a staggering statistic and certainly good reason for you to understand what is going on! People suffering with heartburn often feel: Acid reflux with an acidic taste in the mouth; Abdominal pain; Bloating; Nausea and/or vomiting; Excessive gas, burping and flatulence; Constipation/ diarrhoea; Decreased appetite; Gurgling, rumbling or growling stomach discomfort. So why do you get it? A patient may suffer from heartburn/indigestion for a number of reasons. Risk factors that may increase the chances of developing heartburn symptoms include: Eating a large meal too quickly; Engaging in physical activity such as lifting or bending after eating a large meal; Consuming coffee, alcohol or chocolate; Eating spicy foods; Eating fatty/greasy foods; Smoking cigarettes; Anxiety and/or stress; Advanced pregnancy, when the baby starts to push up against the stomach contents; Being overweight/obese this is because the extra fat inside the abdominal wall reduces the amount of room for the stomach and small intestines thus any extra pressure on

Rebecca Steele

the stomach will force the stomach contents up into the oesophagus; Taking medicines that decrease the protective layer in our stomach, thus increasing the effects of acid (e.g. Ibuprofen, aspirin, diclofenac); Wearing tight clothes that may put extra pressure on the stomach. So what can you do at home to avoid it?! Chew your food completely and eat slowly; Eat smaller meals more frequently, rather than 3 large meals daily; Avoid late-night eating (i.e. try timing your meal so that you finish at least 2 hours before lying down/going to bed); Keep a food diary to work out which foods are your heartburn triggers; Recognise and avoid foods that cause symptoms. Common triggers include spicy or fatty foods, tomatoes, orange juice, coffee and chocolate; Avoid caffeine; Quit smoking; Avoid overindulging in alcohol; Wait at least 30 minutes after eating for exercise; If you take NSAIDS (e.g. nurofen, aspirin, voltaren), make sure they are always taken with food in the stomach; Elevate your bed-head; If you are overweight, losing some weight will help. Remember your LiveLife pharmacists are here to help you with your heartburn! We have lots of different treatment options available, so don’t suffer in silence - talk to us today- we are here to help!

Autoimmune conditions YOU’VE probably heard about them and may even know somebody who has one - but what exactly is an autoimmune condition? Auto means “self”, so an autoimmune condition occurs when the body’s immune system targets itself. It usually manifests with inflammation and damage to body tissues. Along with swelling there is often pain and a variety of other symptoms depending upon what areas of the body are affected. Some common autoimmune conditions include: Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus (SLE), Psoriasis, Crohn’s disease and Hashimotos (hypothyroidism). Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Autoimmune conditions are thought to be the result of an unbalanced immune system. Ideally, the immune system protects you from harmful invaders such as bacteria, viruses and toxins. To deal with a threat, your immune system deploys fighter “T” cells that surround the invaders. Regulatory cells are also deployed to control the numbers of T cells that are released, keeping the immune system balanced. If there are not enough functional regulatory cells, the immune system cannot distinguish invaders from healthy body tissue. To make matters worse, the resulting inflammation increases tissue damage and can affect organ function. For example, in ulcerative colitis the gut lining is damaged, resulting in poor digestive function and abdominal pain. Most of the the immune system is housed in the gut. To stay healthy, the gut needs to have a good balance of beneficial bacteria. Factors such as poor diet, stress and some medications can lead

www.cooroyrag.com.au

to imbalances in the bacteria levels, and a higher risk of autoimmune conditions. Good bacteria (probiotics) can help restore the function of microbes that influence the immune response. For example, the probiotic strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG®) and Lactobacillus paracasei (LP-33™) work together to balance the gut biome and increase the numbers of T regulatory cells that encourage a healthy immune response, leading to symptom improvement. Nutrients can also help to restore balance. For example, vitamin D is required to produce healthy T regulatory cells. Omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA (found in fish oils) act as an ‘off’ switch to unchecked inflammation. Reducing inflammation can relieve symptoms and reduce tissue damage; allowing the affected organs to return to normal function. It is no surprise that diet is the key to supporting healthy gut microbiota and the advice is the same as always: eat plenty of whole unprocessed foods rich in fibre, especially soluble fibres. You can also boost essential fatty acid intake with oily fish, nuts and seeds. Regular, low-impact exercise not only releases painkilling endorphins, but also helps combat the fatigue associated with autoimmune conditions. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in providing a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. Bed 3; Bath 1; Car 2 Price: Offers over $449,000. This picture-perfect Pomona cottage is such a delight, with its many original features and commanding position. It’s also a rare find, being an important slice of hinterland history. Built as Pomona’s first Police Station in 1927, this is now a fabulous village home, right down to the charming picket fence. Renovations over the years have been done well, with so many special features preserved, including original wide Hoop Pine floorboards, high VJ ceilings and walls, French doors, fret work and more. There are welcome modern touches, too, including air-conditioning, town water and mains sewerage. The three pretty bedrooms all open through

French doors to the wonderful wraparound verandah, where you can sit and watch the world go by. The open plan layout provides plenty of options, while the spacious kitchen includes a dishwasher. This home is as impressive outside as it is in, with a majestic mango tree providing a stunning centrepiece on the 875m2 block. Fully-fenced with a dog-proof yard, there’s a great undercover entertainment area offering both peace and privacy. Just an easy stroll from the village shops, cafes and schools, you won’t find many original Queenslanders of this high standard and historical value on the market. 4 4 Bed, 3 Bath, 2 Car, Pool, 5.18 acres Offers over $925,000 Sitting proudly on the highest point of Binalong Rd and with magnificent views in all directions, this stunning rural home offers privacy, elevation and a feeling of grandeur and style. Curved walls of glass pay respect to the beautiful surrounds with Pinbarren Mountain as the centrepiece of an expansive vista. Colourful feature walls and round port windows add to the appeal while a spiral staircase continues the theme. Enter this unique home via a paved courtyard to the sounds of a peaceful water feature. Walk through feature wooden doors and visuals of spaciousness and colour intrigue the senses. A tiled foyer flows into the large living area and immediately gives a feeling of being somewhere special. An adjacent dining area captures magnificent views of Pinbarren Mountain through a towering wall of curved glass. These light filled gorgeous rooms are serviced by a central kitchen featuring black granite benchtops, Miele appliances and an island bench with breakfast bar. Climb the sweeping staircase to the upper level where every room has a stunning view of the surrounding mountains and countryside. The spacious master bedroom with large walk in robe and modern ensuite has access through plantation shutters to a sunny portico balcony. A second living space with celestial circular ceiling creates separation from the two other bedrooms which have their own bathroom in between. A fourth bedroom and third bath-

room are located downstairs adjacent to a remote double lock up garage which can be accessed internally and houses a concealed 76,000 litre concrete water tank. Reliable internet, excellent mobile coverage and 5 Kw solar are welcome additional features. Outside covered patio areas with adjacent resort style saltwater pool and tropical landscaping create a private oasis for entertaining and enjoyment. A short walk leads past galvanised round yards to a small wooden cabin with incredible views. This level zone is accessed from two directions allowing easy drive through for horse floats or trailers. Below a stable with curved roof and large rainwater trough separates lush undulating paddocks, while a genuine spring fed dam and pump provides a reliable source of water for irrigation and gardens. Fertile soils make these paddocks suitable for any rural pursuit. There is enough pasture for a few cattle though the horses seem very happy. Another option is orchards of subtropical fruit or enhance the native plantings to attract more birds and wildlife. The next caretaker of this beautiful property will feel very blessed. Good bitumen roads lead to the vibrant hinterland towns of Pomona and Cooran which both have excellent country schools and are surrounded by world famous Noosa Tracks and Trails, perfect for horse riding, mountain biking and walking in nature. A lot on offer for those wanting position, privacy and space. Contact Sam Hargrave 0425 777 121 or Phil Hargrave 0417 750 507 at Hargrave Real Estate.

COOROY RAG

Mother and son both National champions

Cooroy 8-ball Assn

Last week’s winner was Shaun; 2nd was Szonam. Great final guys could have gone either way. 3rd Bec, 4th Stewart, 5th John and 6th Lester. A great turnout with 28 players

Harrison and judges Harrison Bergman, 16 years and his mother Dale competed at National PHAA (Paint Horse Association of Australia) Championships at the Australian Equine & Livestock Events Centre in Tamworth recently and both won National Championships. Dale did not know she would be competing until the last minute. Her best friend organised for one of Harrison’s horses to be transported down there for her to compete as well, for a 50th birthday surprise.

Dale and Soxie Harrison also judged and was interviewed by the World Show Judges from USA on his knowledge and his judging skills. He was awarded National Reserve Champion judge. Harrison also sponsored the “Harrison Bergman Grand Champion” event. Harrison has worked very hard for years on his breeding and credentialing program. Congratulations Dale and Harrison.

THE Wednesday night 8-ball comp at the Cooroy Hotel is going strong. $5 entry. Up to $200 cash and prizes every week. Second chance round, 2 chances at the cash. 6.30 start, join up till 7pm, meals available, bar open. Come along for a great night, all players welcome! Due to the large numbers coming to our pool comps each night, it is necessary to kick off the first games by 6.30. I realise it is difficult for players who travel some distance to be there before 6.30, so if possible could players please send me a short text to say they are coming, that way i can put them straight in the draw and start the first games at 6.30 with the players that are already there. Registration is still available up till 7.00pm. Please Text me a message to 0408 079 359, or Bec on 0409831052 before 6.30pm.

TWO of the Impact Boxing crews youngest boxers made a real Impact last Saturday night when the attended the Beaudesert Boxing tournament. First boxer to the ring was Paige Robinson. Paige was entering the ring for the very first time in a competition environment. Despite being a little nervous this young superstar put on an absolute boxing clinic against her oppo-

nent, Desely Schubert from Roma. From the opening bell Paige had her opponent on the back foot as she continually applied pressure with some well timed combinations. Mid way through the first round Paige caught her opponent with a cracking right hand and the referee was forced to intervene and apply a standing eight count on Desely. The referee signalled the two combatants to continue to box, when Paige again had her opponent on the back foot where she was caught with another pin point accurate right hand. This time the referee had seen enough and Paige was awarded the win via a round 1 TKO win. Next up was younger brother Cohen Robinson. Cohen was entering the ring for only his second bout. Cohen’s opponent was a another tough country kid from Roma. Cohen also started the bout well catching his opponent with some clean shots forcing the referee to halt proceedings while his op-

ponent was given a standing 8 count. Just when we thought this bout may end up a similar result as Paige’s bout, Cohen’s opponent seemed to find a second wind at came at the young southpaw like a bull out of a gate. Rounds two and three were very similar with Cohen landing the cleaner punches but his opponent Bryce Dudgeon just kept coming forward. By the time the final bell rang both boys had very little in the tank as they were called into centre ring to await the decision. Cohen was awarded the win via a unanimous decision. “I am so proud of these two little legends. They have been training 4-5 nights a week for the last 18 months. They are an absolute pleasure to train and it was great to see all their hard work pay off,” Coach Mark Evans said. The Impact team will now turn their focus to the Wide Bay Titles next weekend to be held in Bundaberg.
