Because of technology, the Cooroy Rag may have become a little slicker over the 50 years it has been in production, but one thing hasn’t changed - we are still committed to promoting our local townships, businesses and community and we thank you for your continued and unwavering support. While we’re on the subject of technology, check out our new website at www.cooroyrag.com.au. Current and 2011 past editions are now online, so if you’re on holidays you don’t have to miss out on the local news and your friends and family who are unlucky enough not to live here can also read about what they’re missing out on. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers, readers, committee members and contributors, with a special thanks to our volunteer rollers who do such a great job each edition getting the papers ready for our locals paper boys and girls to deliver.

Not my fave

HAM SAUCE I LIKE browsing in second-hand shops, I have no aversion to using other people’s discarded things, even double dipping doesn’t scare me. So why is it then that when I’m shopping in supermarkets or department stores I can’t buy anything I’ve picked up and looked at because once I’ve done that these items become ‘used’? For instance, I grab a pack of socks or jocks, read the label, make sure they’re the ones I want, and then … because I’ve touched them … I have to put them back and get the ‘new’ pack next to them. I hadn’t realised that this was my caper until fairly recently when, probably because of my deteriorating eyesight, I’ve ended up with several bottles of shampoo and no conditioner, underwear that wouldn’t fit a five year old and a half dozen cans of baked beans in ham sauce. I’ve never tasted baked beans in ham sauce because I don’t know what ham sauce is. I’ve never seen it in a bottle and the whole idea of it just seems wrong. But now that I have a pantry stocked with the stuff I’m trying to sell it to the kids as a luxury item. Perhaps its time to start buying the things I’ve contaminated before I have to adopt a 5 year old, bald, ham sauce eating child … or the child next to that one …. So there you have it … stores, socks and sauces Having a phobia of my own fingerprints - Not my fave! Next edition: July 27 Booking deadline: July 14 Copy deadline: July 18

Thieves hit local dress shop IT’S unfortunate that thieves have once again targeted one of our local businesses, this time Maple Street dress shop, Lilly Pilly, getting away with thousands of dollars worth of stock including clothing, jewellery, bags and shoes. Owner, Liz Johnson, says the theft has had an enormous impact on her business because as well as the loss of stock and business downtime, the thieves also stole two computers storing all the business accounts. The shop was burgled during the early hours of Thursday morning (June 23).

Police were notified by another Maple Street business around 5am Thursday morning that the door to Lilly Pilly was ajar. Liz is hoping that someone may have seen something as it appears as though the thieves could have been interrupted as some bags stuffed with jewellery were left on the floor of the premises. Police investigations are underway. Forensics have fingerprinted the store and CTV footage is being looked at. If anyone has any information, please phone the Cooroy Police on 5442 5030 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Realty literary festival at Library COOROY Rag has two tickets to give away to the launch of Reality Writes Readers and Writers Weekend on Friday 22 July. This year this home-grown talk-fest moves into its permanent home in the Cooroy Library for the first time. Audiences will arrive from all over the region to hear visiting interstate and local authors discuss their books and ideas over one weekend. The program covers a range of hot issues, from the obesity epidemic to life at the wrong end of the GFC; true crime to forgotten history. If you’ve never been to a literary festival before, the launch event gives a taste of what to expect. ‘It’s slow TV’, says director, Annette Hughes. “A bit like Oprah, but you’re in the studio audience, up close and personal with the people on stage. Being in a festival audience is much more engaging than just passively watching TV.” Proudly sponsored by the Eumundi Historical Association, the 2011 keynote speaker is Tamil Tigress Niromi de Soyza, talking about her life in the rebel Tamil military. Now a happily married Sydney mother of two, Niromi once packed a cyanide cap and machine gun and took up arms for the cause of freedom. A true story of courage and resilience. On arrival you’ll be handed a glass of wine to enjoy while you listen to Niromi’s amazing story. Then after that, mingle with other book lovers in

the festival bar, with food catered courtesy of the fabulous Maison de Provence. “This is the major social event for our organisation”, says Sunshine Hinterland Writers’ Centre President, Bernice Childs. “It is where we thank our volunteers and sponsors. It’s a great opportunity for local writers to network with each other and the visiting authors, and for all of them to meet the most important people in their world – us, their readers! “This is our fourth festival now”, says Diana Bulger of Possum books, official bookseller and box office to the festival. “The vision is to grow into a major drawcard to the hinterland centred on the Cooroy Library. “Manager Tracey King and her team are incredibly supportive. We’re also grateful for the valuable in-kind sponsorship by local businesses like Daddows. The library will be open on Saturday morning when two festival sessions will be staged, free and open to the public. Then access to the festival will be ticketed over the weekend. For bookings phone Possums Books on (07) 5447 7090. Pick up a program at the library or download from www.realityliteraryfestival.org For your chance to win two tickets to the launch, email the festival director realityliteraryfestival@gmail.com) with ‘Cooroy Rag’ in the subject line.

THE Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) since 2002 has had a presence in the old Noosa Shire towns of Cooroy and Noosa/Tewantin. On the 24th of July NTS Noosa will be having a ‘Pre-Recognition Inspection’ by the Director of Flotilla’s, CMDR Darren MacDonald ANC and the Sunshine Coast Flotilla Commander, LCDR Warren Blee ANC. The inspection will not only be looking at the unit’s records, Personnel and level of training but the amount of community support. The ANC has very high standards as to the amount of community support each unit should have, from people who volunteer their time as Unit Support Volunteers (USV) or as Instructors and the level of interest and concern that the public has to the well being of the unit and its continued training of the youth of the local region. The final decision of the inspection will be whether or not the unit receives a Pass or Fail, should the unit Pass then in around

Dr Lucy Robson

Dr Eve Bevan

October the unit will be recognised (Commissioned) and renamed ‘TS Sheean’ (Training Ship Sheean), named after Ordinary Seaman Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean of the HMAS Armidale from World War Two. In the event the unit receives a Fail then the unit will be closed down by October if not sooner and with the nearest unit to Cooroy being in Gympie the ANC would not be able to supply Navy Cadets for any further functions as in previous years. On the 21st of June the call went out for support and as far away as the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets (RCSC), and the United Kingdom Sea Cadet Corps (UKSCC) and from around Australia but what we need is local support. What I ask if that as many RSL Sub-Branch members as well as former and active service personnel who wish to see the unit continue attended that would be great.

Marvellous Mill Place volunteers THE success of Mill Place as a community hub is testament to the many dedicated volunteers who donate their time and skills to the precinct – managed by Sunshine Coast Council. Hours of volunteer time are clocked up each month by Cooroy community members. In the month of May, a whopping total of 524 hours were donated to work on the many activities that occur on Mill Place. Volunteers are involved in activities such as the Cooroy Community Gardens, Friends of Mill Place, Lower Mill Board and adult literacy tutoring. Cooroy Community Precinct Manager, Tracey King acknowledged that Mill Place successfully hosted over 400 events in the past twelve months thanks to the assistance of volunteers. “Mill Place is a vibrant hub in Cooroy and that’s because of the positivity and enthusiasm of our volunteers,” Ms King said. Volunteers from the Friends of Mill Place work together to run the Retail Store in the

Cooroy Library. They also meet on a monthly basis to plan their next activities and they host a weekly game of Scrabble in the library. The Cooroy Community Gardeners are a passionate group of people who hosted a grand garden opening at the beginning of the month. They run monthly working bees and workshops and meet regularly to discuss where to source ingredients for their compost heap, the planned herb spiral and the recently planted banana circle. Adult literacy tutors provide literacy training that helps people improve their reading, writing, spelling, maths and English language skills. Information technology savvy volunteers provide free tuition to people wanting to improve their computer skills. Volunteers assist the Butter Factory Arts Centre with exhibition openings and mail-outs. All the work undertaken by the Camphor Laurel Initiative and the Cooroora Woodworkers is also on a voluntary basis. “It’s really inspiring the amount of assistance we receive, we owe the great

success of Mill Place to the assistance of the Cooroy community,” Ms King said. Friends of Mill Place are currently seeking interested volunteers to start tours of the precinct, including the restored boiler house and kilns. If this sounds like something you would like to do, drop into the Cooroy Library to find out more about how you can be part of the ongoing activities at Mill Place.

TAX Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo has warned the community to be alert to tax related scams in the lead up to tax time. “During the busy tax season, scammers will try to catch you off guard using phone calls, letters, text messages, emails, bogus websites and even false job advertisements to trick you into providing your personal details and pay money. “We are aware of a current telephone scam operating where a person claiming to be from the ATO or “Taxation Department” calls offering you a grant of $7000 if you pay $200. “These scammers try to appear more legitimate by providing you with a case number and a telephone number to call back on.” If you think you have been the victim of a scam, contact the ATO client contact centre immediately by phoning 13 28 61 (8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday).

End of financial year check list Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

THE end of the financial year is upon us all and that means it’s time to get your finances organised and collate all your details relating to your tax return. A well prepared return could result in funds being returned to your pocket. Organising your tax return early also gives you an advantage being that most of your income sources and claims should be fresh in your mind. Possible claims can be easily missed when six or twelve months have gone by. Income items that you may need to collate include wages or salary from your employers over that last twelve months. This is generally a group certificate and should be provided to you automatically. Chase them up if you don’t receive it. Interest income is another source that needs to be included. This is income that has been earned on your bank accounts credit funds such as savings, investments or term deposit accounts. Your bank will be able to provide you with this information. Income earned off any shares that you hold is important. These dividends should be outlined in a statement you receive from the company issuing the shares. If you don’t have this statement your accountant may be able to access this information for you. If you own an investment property, you will need to include any rental income that you have received during the year. Your managing realestate agent will be able to issue you with a statement detailing this income. You then should collate any possible deductions that you have. Income protection insurance is one that you need to include. You may be paying this as a monthly debit to you bank account. The insurance company should send you a statement outlining your payment. Bank fees can be claimed. Source them from your bank account statements or your bank

directly. Uniforms costs associated with your work may be relevant. These include purchasing of new uniforms and the laundering or dry cleaning of them. Receipts are good. Did you engage in any study or training associated with your work throughout the year? Costs associated with this may be relevant. Do you use your car for work? Running costs may need to be included. Investments loans over assets such as property or shares can have interest and costs included as possible deductions. Additionally running costs associated with the property may also be included. Receipts or bank statements should outline this information. This list has certainly not exhausted all possible income and claims, they are just a few of the main ones you may need to think about. Your accountant is always a good source of information. Your bank will also be able to assist you with statements and information relating to your accounts and loans. If you would like to discuss your finances or current banking relationship, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigobank.com.au.

Letter to the editor

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington BUDGET brings good news for first home buyers: First home buyers throughout Queensland will be eligible to receive a State Government Grant of $10,000 for new homes contracted between August 1, 2011 and January 31 next year. I believe this grant, when used in conjunction with the zero stamp duty for first home buyers for properties under $500,000, will certainly kick-start Queensland’s home building industry. During the State Budget I also supported the Government’s move to introduce GPS technology to monitor and track the movements of offenders on continuing supervision orders under the Dangerous Prisoners Sexual Offenders Act. Recently I spoke out in Parliament and called for the monitoring and tracking of all former serious sexual offenders released back into our community. Speaking of the State Budget: Speaking on the State Budget in Parliament, I noted the significant allocation of further money to the Queensland Bulk Water Transport Authority for the Northern Pipeline Inter Connector Stage 2 project, and how the cost of this pipeline project has blown out. There are still many landowners in my electorate struggling to get reparations carried out and compensation sorted out in the wake of this project. Part of the Nambour to Mapleton Road, between Willandra Place and Mapleton, is set to be upgraded this financial year at a cost of $6.1 million, and the Kenilworth to Maleny Road, between Cambroon Creek and Booloumba Creek Road, is to receive an initial $500,000 to start the $5 million upgrade. On the Na-

tional Highway between Cooroy and Curra, I am pleased that Senior Main Roads staff listened to the Cudgery community and my request to move the proposed Cudgery intersection with the National Highway further north and away from the current Cudgery intersection. I understand we are currently waiting on the Federal Minister to approve the proposed change of location. In the budget the Treasurer referred to a further $147.9 million to continue the upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Sankeys Road to Traveston Road. The Federal State Primary School was relocated during the Cooroy to Curra Road upgrade, and recently I joined with Gympie MP David Gibson, and Margaret O’Neill, Member for Kalangur, for the official opening of the new Federal State School. Congratulations to all involved. I urged the Treasurer to bring forward the sale of land purchased by the Government in the Mary Valley for the now abandoned Traveston Crossing Dam. I continue to receive enquiries from people keen to purchase in the Valley. I believe significant income could be generated from the sale of these properties for the State Government. New interest in our community would immediately occur with significant new employment generated opportunities for all. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, July 14, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933.

I WRITE in response to the Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington’s column, Wellington’s Way, published in the June 15 edition of the Cooroy Rag. Mr Wellington stated that the 2011 land valuations for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland took into consideration land purchased by the State Government for the previously proposed Traveston Dam. In fact, no land purchases by the State Government in the Traveston Dam footprint influenced the 2011 valuations of the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regional council areas. The 2011 valuations are a snapshot of land values as at the 1 October 2010 and are based upon sales of vacant or improved lands in the local government areas that occurred outside the Traveston Dam footprint. The new land values are supported by the available sales evidence which is the best indicator of current market values in the local area. Property owners who disagree with their valuation, and can provide sufficient information to demonstrate why their valuation is incorrect can lodge an objection by 4 July 2011. To lodge an objection, landowners will need an objection kit which includes the objection form and an easy to follow guide. These can be found on the Department of Environment and Resource Management website, www.derm.qld.gov.au, or by calling 1300 664 217. Neil Bray, Valuer-General

CWA celebrates special birthday CWA Cooroy celebrated their 84th Birthday on the 27th of June with a large gathering of members, former members and special guests turned up to enjoy the day. It was a very special celebration as Wendy Bebbington (president CWA Cooroy) announced to the crowd that the CWA Cooroy finally has ownership of the Q-Rail land behind their building. The process to acquire this land began in 1966, so has been a protracted endeavour for the branch, but with a great deal of persistence from Wendy and her team of hardworking women and the continuous input from Peter Wellington over the last few years, the CWA were finally able to celebrate this milestone. Wendy also paid tribute to the foresight of the foundation members saying “The amenities we have today are a fitting and lasting memorial to their dedication and love for others.”

Price rise for water users UNITYWATER has released its new pricing for 2011/12 to reflect changes announced by the State Government in April. From 1 July 2011, Unitywater’s fixed water and sewerage access and water usage charges will increase by 3.6%. This is consistent with the State Government’s decision to cap Local Government distributor-retailer residential and small business price rises at CPI for the next two years. The price cap does not apply to the State Government’s bulk water charge, which will increase by 25% for Unitywater’s Sunshine Coast customers in 2011/12. The average three-person household on the Sunshine Coast will incur an annual increase of $32, or about nine cents a day, in Unitywater’s charges next financial year. They will pay $56 more for the State Government’s bulk water charge. Unitywater CEO, Jon Black, said pricing reforms outlined by the organisation in March, which aimed to standardise tariffs, fees and charges across Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast and shift the emphasis to user-pays, had to be postponed. Mr Black said instead, the existing price structure for Sunshine Coast customers would be retained. “We are disappointed that we have been unable to pursue the reforms which were designed to simplify the current pricing system and deliver greater equity and transparency,” he said. “We remain committed to those

SPV Accounting

news

COOROY RAG principles.” Mr Black said trade waste and recycled water tariffs, fees and charges were unaffected by the state legislation and Unitywater had moved to simplify these prices and create greater consistency across its customer base. “We have halved the number of trade waste charges from 80 to 40 in 2011/12 and the new structure reflects the environmental impact of different kinds of trade waste and encourages environmentally-friendly waste management practices,” he said. Mr Black said Unitywater would continue to roll out investment in critical capital works to support population growth on the Sunshine Coast and meet the Government’s increasingly stringent environmental standards. He said the organisation would borrow to fund these works and determine the price path to recover the cost over the life of the assets. “Unitywater still has a responsibility to deliver this essential infrastructure, regardless of the price cap,” Mr Black said. “Unfortunately, since the removal of the State Government subsidy for sewerage infrastructure in 2009, the burden of funding these works will fall on our customers.” He said the organisation also remained focused on improving customer service, achieving further operational efficiencies and pursuing sustainable, innovative technologies and opportunities to benefit its customers and the environment.

GUEST speaker at the next Professional Women’s Breakfast on Wednesday July 13th, Dennis Dunstan, will ensure that this will truly be a breakfast with a difference. Dennis Dunstan was both Personal Manager to Mick Fleetwood and Co-Manager of Fleetwood Mac. When The Mac weren’t touring, he was engaged by the other members Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham on their solo projects and tours. Having worked with an enviable list of “who’s who” in the music industry Dennis teamed with highly successful business partner Paul Darrouzet, setting up Front Row Management to manage and promote

exceptional Australian talent. Dennis draws from years of experience and knowledge to nurture and guide artists with honesty and integrity along with a heavy influence on international success. He was responsible for the Tina Turner impressionist Rebecca O’Connor ’s successful concert at the Noosa Heads Surf Club. Dennis, his wife and children chose the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to move away from the Los Angeles culture. So if you’re a rock ‘n’ roller from way back; want to find out how promotion works or just interested in the machinations of the music industry then you’ll be delighted with what’s in store from our very special guest speaker. Venue: Maison De Provence, Wattle Street, Cooroy, 7.15am for 7.30am start. Delicious French breakfast only $15.00 per person. Due to limited seating RSVP is a must by Monday 11 July. David celebrates 10 years at Cooroy Produce

THIS month 10 years ago, young David Yabsley, who was a part-time employee at Cooroy Produce at the time, decided he liked the business so much he bought it! “It doesn’t feel like 10 years, how time flies,” said David. “Since then I’ve seen this little town expand more than I could have ever expected. Cooroy and its surroundings is a great place for people to relocate and enjoy our rural lifestyle, which of course, includes being able to have a few chickens and a variety of pets.” Cooroy Produce has been supplying locals with a great range of horse feed, pet food and most popular these days, day old chicks and Point of Lay hens

for fresh eggs. In addition to Horse feed and pet supplies Dave has it covered with bird seed, garden supplies, fencing and gas refills to name a few. Dave would like to take this opportunity to thank all his customers for their loyalty over the past 10 years and is looking forward to expanding further to help with growing customer requirements. For those of you new to the area, call in and see David for all your produce requirements and friendly, helpful advice and service. There’s plenty of parking and Dave’s country manner and knowledge makes it easy to shop locally. Cooroy Produce is located behind the Post Office at 2 Garnet Street. Phone 54476 002

AT Hyacinth’s Bouquet we deliver a wide range of beautiful bouquets and arrangements throughout the Sunshine Coast area. From stylish new age designs to traditional bouquets and arrangements, we will make sure that your flowers not only look fantastic every time, but that they are right for your particular occasion. With our great team of professional florists and our same day delivery service, you can be sure that you will get fantastic flowers on time every

time! Try our range of ECOYA products and candles that are hand crafted from natural waxes, even the wick is 100% natural made from pure lead free cotton. Our Ecoya body care range uses only the finest botanical natural bases. Why natural waxes? Paraffin wax is the predominant wax used in the candle industry. It is also the final by-product in the petroleum refining chain. It has been described as “bottom of the barrel” even after the asphalt is extracted. The emissions releases when a paraffin candle is burned are basically the same as is given off by burning diesel fuel. Whereas candles made from natural waxes {i.e. soy or palm} produce approximately a tenth of the soot produced by a comparably sized paraffin candle and do not contain any of the toxic chemicals. Add this to the fact that soy and palm wax candles burn at a lower temperature and last 30% longer than that of a paraffin candle. We stock a range of new baby hampers, helium balloons for all occasions, gifts for him and her, teddies for everyone, chocolates, umbrellas, living plants, flowering orchids, small and large vases of all shapes and sizes, wall art and much more. Social Media Business Class IF you think that you do not need social media in your marketing toolkit for your business, please think again. Good news travels well in word-of-mouth advertising but “Nothing travels faster than light, with the possible exception of bad news, which follows its own rules” – Douglas Adams. If you are able to keep track of what your clients are saying via social media, you can make the rules, especially in respect of a bad experience with your business. Only today I watched the progress and handling of a series of negative comments by a well-known national company with a page on Facebook – they handled the negativity not only promptly but with great service, remembering that many of their clients would be watching and no doubt encountering a similar problem. After about 20 responses, the problem was resolved, everyone felt valued and expressed gratitude. Aren’t they much more likely to not only return but also REFER

to others? This is the heart of the new ‘good service’. Yes – “good service”. “Social media is a great tool for putting out fires, but it’s an even better tool for building brand equity and relationships with you customers.” Gary Vaynerchuk – The Thank You Economy. No longer are we content with sitting in a ‘queue’ on the telephone for half an hour and no longer are we prepared to speak to a nonhuman. We, the customer, will go elsewhere. Statistically, people are now ready to pay more for good and prompt service. Businesses must be prepared to grasp the power in understanding the strength of relationships formed via social media, the bottom line of caring for the client and the amazing power in the new word-of-mouth. Feeling ready to grasp 21st Century marketing? Your business depends on it! Jeanette Rachinger 0418 824 079.

JULY 14th

M a is o n and La Mode de Provence De Fabienne Presents

MEET the folks at Downtown Cooroy. These are the businesses that look out to Apex Park and the Library. Here you can get your hair and nails done, pick up a great gift, stock up on car products, enjoy a seafood lunch and then head home with items from the hire service for the weekend. Too easy. At one end of the block is Cooroy Car Parts and Accessories, a family owned business for the last 10 years. Elona Bosboom and her two local employees supply good old fashioned service and expert advice for all your motoring needs. With already very competitive prices, Elona’s July special – 5 to 10% off all floor stock for July - is just what you need to stock up. We know that many of their loyal customers have become friends, which is always a testament to a good business. Next along the walkway you’ll find Cooroy Seafoods. They supply fresh seafood as well as tasty fish and chips. Believe me; it’s worth checking out the famous Thai seafood curry cooked by T.J. every Friday and Saturday night. The business was purchased three years ago by T.J. and Reny. When asked what was best about the business, Reny says “the people are great, so friendly and supportive”. quest of customers, Max is re-opening the plant nursery after winter. Two years ago, Max decided he didn’t need quite as much space and an extra shop was put in the block. Splashes of Sunshine Gift Shop arrived, with gifts, crystals, artwork and locally made items. Owner, Cheryl Boyte, has now added personalised printing on t-shirts, aprons and tote-bags, so that you can have a really special gift. Most popular are the “brag bags” – cotton tote bags with a photo of the dogs or the grandchildren printed on to them. Cheryl is happy to create a design especially for you. Anchoring the Maple Street end of the block is Cooroy Hair Design. Combine Melissa’s 25, and Lyn’s 20 years’ hairdressing experience, and you know you’re in great hands. They do every aspect of hairdressing, from your child’s first haircut, style cuts, school formals, weddings, colours, perms and so much more. Proprietor, Melissa Epps uses and recommends Matrix products, because they are top quality at affordable prices. The salon is open weekdays and Saturday mornings with bookings preferred. Rounding out Downtown Cooroy is an exciting new business, Jessica Holmes Beauty Spot. As well as the full range of beauty and body services, Jessica brings to Cooroy the ultimate in Spray tanning, the TUSCAN tan. She also offers Blitxz foil nail art, the latest trend to hit Europe. Once you try either of these services you’ll be hooked. Reward yourself. That’s only a fraction of the offer from these businesses. As the song says “Go Downtown, things’ll be great when you’re Downtown – everything’s waiting for you”.

MARY Valley residents and anybody interested in becoming part the Mary Valley’s future are invited to a community information forum on Thursday, July 14 at the Imbil Public Hall starting at 5.30pm. The forum will hold presentations about the progress of inspiring community lead projects as well as providing updates on local and state government economic and land sale plans for the Mary Valley. “Encouraging diverse sustainable agriculture is the top priority already highlighted by the community, followed by branding the valley, showcasing the environment, river access, developing a retirement place for farmers, and securing the region as a food bowl for the south-east corner of the State”, Mary Valley Renewal Team spokesperson Glenda Pickersgill said. “We want to share the progress that is happening and keep looking for new ideas for the Mary Valley. It is imperative that we keep moving forward by more conversations.” “Come along and find out how to get involved with existing projects, or work with others on new ideas that are important to rebuilding the communities of the Mary Valley, and protecting our special environment.” Information and updates on projects will be fed into the Mary Valley Community and Economic Plan which was put together to help recover from the social and economic impacts of the now discontinued Traveston Crossing Dam proposal.. The updated version will be available on the website www.marvalleyrenewal.org The doors open at 5.30pm with displays of Mary Valley groups and businesses. The evening program starts at 6.15 pm with a variety of speakers, topics and opportunities to be involved. Guide dog visit Cooroy Opposite the Butter Factory

SIZES UP TO KK 9/14 Maple Street, Cooroy Ph/Fax: 5447 7443

HOW do guide dogs know where the shops are? Can they go in to libraries, shops and hospitals? Are the guide dogs allowed to play? These are just a few of the questions posed to Olwyn Kerr of Guide Dogs Queensland at her recent visit to Tadpoles Early Learning Centres - Cooroy. Ms. Kerr and Archie, the guide dog, were invited by the children of the Preschool Room. Wendy Scott, Preschool Room educator, explained the progression from an observation of children covering their eyes and trying to manoeuvre their way around the playground without sight, to the Guide Dog Queensland visit as part of the Early Years Learning Framework ie: children are connected with and contribute to their world: children respond to diversity with respect; and to begin to show concern for others. Ms Kerr kindly answered all the children’s questions and more. She explained the importance of not touching or talking to guide dogs while they are wearing a coat or harness. Ms Kerr said “Distracting a guide dog while working can inconvenience or endanger the handler. They both need to concen-

trate to arrive at their destination safely.” Ms Kerr explained the training the dogs undertake and the many ways in which guide dogs can make a difference to someone’s life. With the support of parents, families, and staff, the Preschool children have been fundraising and are now able to sponsor a litter of guide dog puppies as part of the Guardianship Program. “We will be able to follow the puppies’ development, as they work towards placement, with regular letters and photographs” said Ms Scott “Guide Dogs Queensland do an amazing job but need the support of the public. We are very happy and proud that we are able to help in some way” “The children and staff appreciate Olwyn volunteering her time to do this presentation for us and for allowing us to meet Archie. We look forward to future visits from our new friends!” Ms. Scott said. For more information please visit www.guidedogsqld.com.au or call into Tadpoles - Cooroy to talk to us about our involvement in the Guardianship Program.

Schooner runs aground in Tuchekoi

A GAFF rigged schooner was found last weekend in Tuchekoi in the Mary Valley. Residents enquired as to the original whereabouts of this schooner ‘The Hamanity’ and her interesting background was told by a local historian, Simon. The 100ft schooner was built by the Dangle brothers in Dingle Ireland in approximately 1836. She sailed successfully across the Atlantic with the crew using celestial navigation right through until the 1870s. Around

that time the captain began to use the vessel for trading in silk, tea and later in rum. As time went by he became less focused on his surroundings, the sky and the stars, and began to look continually into the hull of the boat at the valuable cargo calculating the potential profit to be made. He began to rely on new mechanical equipment, less on celestial navigation, and things began to go wrong. The vessel made it to New Zealand, and on to the East Coast of Australia where it ran aground. After extensive repairs it safely crossed the Noosa bar and up the river to Boreen Point at Lake Cootharaba. During the 2011 floods the rising waters carried The Humanity across the Noosa bar and she was sailed up the Fraser Coast to Maryborough. She met her fate in the upper waters of the Mary River where she hit a sand bar off Tuchekoi. Hence she was sighted last weekend in the waters off Chinaman creek where she is awaiting further constructional repairs.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Group Leader, Cooroy S.E.S.

Come and hear well-known, award-winning poets Shirley Friend, Bill Kearns, Manfred Vijars, John Major, Harry Donnelly and Ian Mackay spin you a yarn.

FIRSTLY, a big Thank You to The Cooroy Rag for your donation. As many people know, the SES relies quite a bit on donations so that we can purchase equipment that will make life easier for our members. Your cheque is appreciated and will be put to good use. It looks like the Noosa Festival of Water was a big success again, despite the light showers in the morning. We had 9 people there assisting with parking both on Lake MacDonald Drive and off Sivyers Road at the Fish Hatchery. This is always a lovely day out for families in our community and we are delighted to have been a part of it again. With the storm season not yet with us, but virtually only around the corner, we are conducting an induction session for new members at 9.00 on Saturday 9th July. This will be followed by an initial training session on Public Safety. Tuesday nights during July will be devoted to undertaking essential basic training for new members, after which they will revert to training with existing members on Monday nights. I will be running the induction session, so if anyone is interested in join-

ing and has some questions, please phone me on 0427 349218. You may have seen some television advertisements recently but in a nutshell. The SES is a volunteer organisation managed by local authorities and supported by the Department of Emergency Services. SES Units aim to: • prepare themselves and their communities to minimise the effects of a disaster, most particularly in our area, storms and floods; • encourage self-help and mutual assistance within each community during times of such disasters; and • support local government and other emergency services during incidents such as road accidents and searches for missing persons Queenslanders aged over 16 years can become an SES volunteer, although they cannot become operational until they turn 18. For any other information on the local SES please call for Cooroy, Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102.

IGA Bush Poets Breakfast THE 7th annual IGA Bush Poet’s Breakfast kick starts this year’s Pomona King of the Mountain Festival on Sunday 24th July; serving a huge hearty traditional breakfast: bacon, eggs, sausages, tomato and hash brown from 7am in the main tent at Stan Topper Park, Pomona. Organiser Nadene said, “These very comic and well known bush poets will be telling you a yarn or two and have you in stitches, it is a great way to start the day. We have a great line up of poet’s at this year’s event including the legendary Shirley Friend, Harry Donnelly, Ian Mackay and not to forget Bill Kearns from NSW, dubbed “The Bull” for his mastery of the art of bull. Bill’s performances have been described as incorrigibull, disreputabull, irascibull but always enjoyabull. Manfred Vijars is the current serving president of the Australian Bush Poets Association and has won several awards for his original poetical works, and John Major has worked at some of Australia’s biggest festivals, including the Tamworth Country Music Festival, the Gympie Muster and the Winton Waltzing Matilda Festival. So come along and listen to Shirley Friend and her ratbag mates”. This has been a very popular event starting at 7am, poets from 8am till 10am; so don’t miss out on listening to Shirley Friend and her ratbag mates, thanks to our sponsors IGA Pomona and Events QLD. Admission $20 on the day or pre booked $17.50. Enquires contact Nadene on 5485 1960 or visit www.kingofthemountain.com.au See you on the Sunday 24th for a belly full of goodness and a belly full of laughs!

Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash A NEW challenge will be set at this year’s Pomona King of the Mountain Festival on Sunday, July 24, in the exciting and inaugural Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash. This new race covers 2.8kms of the existing Mountain Challenge Course and is open to 3 categories, under 15, under 18 and over 18 male and females and cost $5 under 18 and $10 over 18. The course terrain is easy to negotiate with an average fitness level required. Winners of each category will receive a prize from our sponsor Zinc 96.1 and medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placements. Organiser Su Below said, “I’m so excited to announce the addition of the Zinc 96.1 Mountain Dash Race at this year’s Pomona King of the Mountain Festival, basically it is for the young and young at heart who would like to have a go at the mountain but know they cannot do it, a dash to the mountain and back. The committee thought this would be a great race to put on for potential future mountain challengers to get a feel for it. It is the same course except for actually running up the mountain that is used for the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. You can check your times and we anticipate that if you can complete this course in less than 8 minutes then you have a good chance of competing in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge Race in the future. Ayla’s songs are easy-listening, and she will also be accompanied by Michael Morgan on guitar for some cover songs in a jazz style. Feeling Dry & Scaley?

Lyn Johanson

Is your headache a pain in the neck? HEADACHES where the pain originates in the cervical spine (upper spine), neck and upper shoulders are often referred to as a “cervicogenic” headache. Many times, these headaches can be a byproduct of injuries such as whiplash, joint or muscle trauma and more commonly due to poor prolonged posture or even cases of severe stress. Headaches are one of the most common ailments in modern society, approximately 12-15% of the population suffers from headaches each year. Usually these are minor stress or tension related headaches, and in some people are more severe migraine headaches. Unfortunately, one type of headache that is often overlooked and misdiagnosed is the cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headaches are one of the most common types of headache, and are clinically defined as pain that is present in the head, but which originates in the cervical spine. The pain associated with this condition is an example of referred pain. This occurs because the nerves that supply the sensation in the upper neck also supply the skin overlying the head, forehead, jawline, back of the ear and behind the eye. Pain that begins in the base of your neck in the cervical spine and then progressively spreads upwards into the head is a typical symptom of cervicogenic headache. There are two symptoms that are classic to those with cervicogenic head-

aches. The first is that the headache can be made worse or actually onset by head or neck movement. The second is that there is marked tenderness in the suboccipital (base of head) region. A thorough examination by your physiotherapist or doctor is usually sufficient to diagnose cervicogenic headache. Occasionally further investigations may be required, such as Xray or CT scan / MRI if there are some complicating symptoms and circumstances. These headaches arising from the neck generally respond quite quickly to treatment and a complete resolution of symptoms can be expected if there are no underlying causes still present. In some cases where the headaches are quite long-term (chronic) your physiotherapist may have to address your posture (study, work and sleep), spinal stiffness, muscle weakness / tightness and imbalances, along with advice on exercises, pillows for sleep and other lifestyle factors. Immediate treatment is the best management for all headaches caused by the neck that do not resolve within a few days of rest and analgesia. Local physiotherapist, Craig Steele, has had extensive experience in treating headaches and neck / jaw problems related to cervicogenic headaches. He can be contacted at Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 for consultations and further advice regarding your treatment.

At last - a weight loss system claimable on your health fund! WITH 52% of women, 67% of men and 25% of children in Australia being overweight or obese it is no surprise that weight loss is a high priority for many people. And now weight loss has become more affordable with the new Shake It Professional Weight Management Program which is the only weight loss program claimable on health funds. This system is also now available in Cooroy at Make a Difference Health & Fitness! Shake It is a carbohydrate controlled dietary program, incorporating moderate exercise, specifically designed for rapid and lasting fat loss. Shake It encourages the body to use fat as the primary source of fuel by restricting dietary carbohydrates and can assist you to lose up to 2 kg of fat per week whilst preserving your muscle mass. Most calorie-restricted diets produce disappointing results due to the excessive loss of muscle mass. The loss of muscle reduces your metabolic rate (ability to burn calories) and increases your likelihood of putting the fat

back on (yo-yo dieting). Shake It helps to avoid the damaging effects of yo-yo dieting. Shake It is run by Qualified Healthcare Professionals and includes a tailored program for each patient and professional advice to overcome obstacles. It is one of the most effective fat loss programs available and is easy to follow and convenient as it includes healthy food to develop good eating habits and great tasting meal replacements and snacks. It burns more fat with sustained results, is convenient and great tasting and is individualised for maximum success. Another great tool that complements the Shake It system is a Bio Age test like you see on television shows such as The Biggest Loser and Oprah. It is a painless test that measures how your body is aging and is a great way to start any weight loss program. If you’d like more information about Shake It ring Lee or Maria at Make a Difference Health & Fitness on 5442 6179 or visit www.madhf.com.au.

Results of auction process

Contact Steve 0447 290 159 www.brialkaparkestate.com.au or your preferred agent

CURRENTLY 1 in every 3 hinternoosa sales is as a result of the Auction process, the remaining 2 are by private treaty. It’s our view in the current market that the Auction method prevails over expressions of interest/tender, (exercise caution - not all auctions are the same). The reason being it’s our experience that buyers are looking for a bargain and the Auction process allows the buyer to interpret the price. In our recent experience we’ve been able to achieve a 60% clearance rate in the current market using this methodology which is a great deal better than the state average. We do this by placing a huge emphasis on getting large numbers of buyers through the properties. We then provide the seller with price feedback from every buyer so the seller benefits from a weight of evidence. This allows us to set a reserve that will cause the property to sell under the hammer through spirited bidding and in the absence of that it’s our experience that we typically sell the properties in the 2 or 4 weeks after the

Auction. Both print and optimized internet advertising are essential to achieve the sale. On average we are generating over 1000 page views on the net every day. Buyers and sellers are genuinely optimistic and this was clearly demonstrated on a cold Cooroy Wednesday night on June 22 when we had our in-room Auctions- 7 properties were put up before a crowd of 130 or more buyers at the Cooroy Hotel. Lot 14 Solar Rd sold went under the hammer for $805,000 – a price significantly above our average sale price. The majority of the other properties also enjoyed spirited bidding, they were subsequently held over and post Auction some of those properties were sold. We anticipate when the dust settles over the ensuing weeks that 60% or more will be sold. Year to date 2011 Auction results, Hinternoosa.com.au we have put up 24 properties, 14 have SOLD (9 post, 3 prior, 2 under hammer, 9 for sale, 1 withdrawn).

IMPACT Boxing Academy’s young guns continued to fire last weekend when the boys travelled to the Acacia Ridge Tavern to compete at the South East Qld titles. The young guns came home with three out of a possible four titles. First into the ring for Impact was little Ben Cameron-Hands. Ben’s fight was a state of origin clash, with his opponent Tim Collier making the journey from NSW. From the opening bell Ben went after Collier. His footwork and his evasive skills proved too good for Collier and Ben was awarded the title with a points victory. Next up for Impact was Callum Jones. Jones’ opponent was Matt Smith from Brisbane. Jones started the bout well,

with superior hand speed the bout looked to be his, when suddenly he was caught with a right hand from Smith. Jones was unable to continue and Smith was awarded the title. Older brother Connor Jones was the next boxer to centre ring for team Impact. Jones’ opponent was Jason Campbell from Brisbane. Jones was out of his corner like a bull out of a gate, pressing forward in his usual aggressive style from the opening bell. Campbell tried in vain to counter punch

Jones and box of the back foot, but Jones was relentless in his pressure. Jones was awarded the title by way of a points decision. Last up for Team Impact was Kirk Dumschat. Kirk could not get a fight in his division so he stepped up a division to take on the highly rated Sam Payne from Gladstone in the open division. Payne boasts a record of 45 fights with 40 wins. Kirk was having his 15th fight. Round one saw Kirk pressure Payne and stay in close working his body with some powerful shots being landed. Round two was a little more even when in the dying seconds Kirk caught Payne with a crisp left hook that sent him wobbling back to his corner for a well earned break. Round three saw both boys standing toe to toe centre ring giving it their all. Kirk was awarded the title by way of a split point decision in what was one of the best fights of the night. “The boys all fought well. They have trained so hard and they are now reaping the rewards. We have been working a lot more on their footwork and evasive skills and they all used what they have been practicing and it has paid off for them,” said trainer, Mark Evans. “These boys are the future of the club and I could not be happier with the way they have all fought and the direction they are heading in.” Team Impact will next compete on the Gold Coast on July 9th in preparation for the Wide Bay Titles on July 23rd.

Cooroy gets Activ IN keeping with its deeply entrenched community roots, Cooroy RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club has partnered with Cooroy and the surrounding region’s most notable sporting and recreation organisations, to form a new initiative called Activ Cooroy. This initiative has been born as a direct consequence of the Queensland State Government’s Local Sport and Recreation Jobs Plan. This program provides key funding to sponsor organisations such as the Cooroy RSL with staff and resources in order to better assist and support community clubs with a range of advice and proactive strategies. Subsequently this will deliver the key outcomes of greater levels of participation and volunteerism across the community. Sandy Bolton and Brett Winkler will head the Cooroy RSL Clubs Cluster based out of the Cooroy RSL offices. Both have a wealth of knowledge and experience in local sport and community operations, marketing, governance, sponsorship and business management. “We are both really looking forward to working with all these clubs”, stated Sandy. “We felt that it was necessary to create a collective brand such as Activ Cooroy for all of those in the clubs cluster so we could promote it on both a local and a regional basis to attract people to this great region. In a community such as ours it is vital to remember that we are all so closely connected and its imperative that the key benefits of social and economic wellbeing are maintained and improved wherever possible. And it’s about having some fun as well, something that

the people of Cooroy know how to do.” The clubs that form the cluster are: Cooroy Gymnastics, Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club, Noosa Basketball Association, Cooroy Bowls Club, Cooroy Tennis Club, Cooroy Badminton Club, Cooroy Horse & Pony Club, Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club, Cooroora United Football Club, Noosa Pirates Junior Rugby League Club. As part of this cluster group, the Cooroy RSL will be endeavouring to head up a twice-yearly event also called Activ Cooroy. This event will help to not only showcase the hinterland region’s sport, recreation and leisure activities and their commitment to leading a more active lifestyle but also act to drive a key element of the tourism sector that will directly benefit the area’s businesses through increased economic activity from visitors. “We want to invite not only those from the local region but also those from the greater Sunshine Coast and other outlying regions, to come to Cooroy and have a great recreational experience as part of a weekend getaway ”, added Sandy. “Come and visit a unique, authentic, friendly hinterland community where you can get back to basics and have some fun. You might even decide to move here one day in the knowledge that we have a great lifestyle and a community that is integrated and engaged with an active and healthy approach to life.” For any further information on the Cooroy RSL Clubs Cluster or the Activ Cooroy Initiative you can contact Sandy Bolton or Brett Winkler at the Cooroy RSL on 54476131

Noosa Junior Pirates Rugby League

U7 gold played a great game of footy against Palmwoods with both teams in the right spirit. Kade was magic and Nick was still tackling in the car park after the game; great game boys. Riley and Jaxon from U7 blue both played a good, hard game against a tough Palmwoods side. Ben and Dan were great at running the ball and defending off the mark. U8 gold played Kawana under the big lights on

Friday night in front of a huge crowd putting on a great show. Great games from Bailey, Michael and Chanse. U9 blues had another great game this week. The boys are really starting to put it all together with standout performances from Harry Baker, Beau Henderson, Kyle Sweeny and man of match, Nathan Rothwell. U9 gold travelled to Kawana the boys played their best game of the year with everyone tack-

ling low and hard. We also let the ball do all the work with some nice back line plays and second phase. Awards this week went to Josh, Zac and Dylan Cross. U10 Gold farewelled Toby in a good clash against Palmwoods and Rhys and Clay demonstrated their diversity in different positions ensuring a good result. U11 gold took on Maroochydore. The boys were slow out of the blocks with the opposition peppering

our backs some lovely kicks. After the break Noosa took control of the game taking 6-4 half time lead to a 36-10 win. Blake was outstanding; laying on some great balls for try machine Zane and Isaak had a huge game in defence. U11 blue had a great game, but an unfortunate loss against Caboolture with only 12 boys. Defence was outstanding; particularly Rhino, Bopple, Josh and Joel. Benny and Jack were good in attack and defence and Aaron went well. Man of the match was Will. U12 blue travelled to Nambour on Friday Night and put on a fantastic display of footy, coming away with an impressive win for the second week. Ethan Wikaira directed the team around the paddock with precision, Stuart Milligan and Lachlan Dand McNab followed up with some outstanding busts; great team effort. Try scorers Taon, Ethan,Stuart and Lachlan G; final score Noosa 20 -Nambour 4. U14 played Bribie at home and after a week that was very testing for all concerned, the boys

came out and played like never before. From the opening whistle they tackled hard, ran hard and totally out muscled the top side. The pressure that the defence caused was what won the game with the final score 20 - 0. Bribie have not been kept scoreless for three years! Fantastic effort and is the start of our run into the finals. U 16’s showed a great night for rugby league in a game with two sides that have played many semi-finals against each other over the years. We had a good strong start with a good ball from Ryan sending Blair over early but Caloundra wanted it more. Ryan scored a captains try with three minutes to go to make it 26 to 24. It was a great game; unlucky not to win. Good luck to all our representative players over the school holidays. We have boys playing all over the country with some travelling as far as North Queensland and Perth and our U12 gold side is off to Gladstone to challenge for the Jason Hetherington Cup.
