Students get a taste of the business world

Tyndle Colley (holding the ABW Grand Champions trophy) with her team mates, mentors and Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards SOME things just seem to get better with age. Whilst Australian Business Week (ABW) has now been hosted at Noosa District State High for the thirteenth straight year, the appetite for the program hasn’t waned. In fact, it’s more popular than ever. ABW offered Year 11 students the opportunity to acquire some skills necessary to run their very own multi-million dollar company. In the exciting week long intensive program, students made business decisions which had real outcomes. This year students ran a simulated resort, and with the help

of a business and teacher mentor discovered the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century. Over the week students performed tasks in teams ranging from forming a company, assigning roles and responsibilities in the company and reviewing key business areas. They had to make decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This year’s 15 teams also developed a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second

commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team prepared a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It made for a full week but left each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. This year, the team named Nature’s Hideaway Resort were crowned Grand Champions.

The winning team’s appointed CEO, Tyndle Colley said the ABW experience had not only benefited his team, but all who took part. “We’ve learnt so many valuable lessons this week - how to work together and consider everyone’s opinions. We were thrilled to have been given this opportunity to develop our skills in business management even though most of us haven’t had business studies as a course. We’re especially thankful to our mentors, who gave their time to guide us and advise us,” Tyndle said. Continued on Page 3

Love and learning fill up shoe boxes COOROY State School students hope to brighten the lives of their East Timorese counterparts with hundreds of educational care packages they sent to a school last week The parcels, in the form of decorated shoeboxes are now on their way to Sao Miguel (St Michael) school, about 30 minutes west of Dili, and included exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils as well as personal items from each student. The community school has 150 kindergarten and 250 primary school students, and the area also caters for several other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies, but Sao Miguel receives no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. This is the sixth year Cooroy State School has supported the shoebox project in partnership with the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Cooroy and Noosa Rotary Clubs. The 600 shoeboxes from Cooroy will join 1,500 others from Tewantin, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 2,000 East Timorese kids. Principal, Richard Barrie said the school is delighted to be involved with the program that started with Tewantin State School in 2008. “It’s been great for all students to get involved and give something back. Some of the many shoe boxes and excited guests at Cooroy State School's East Timor Shoe Box collection day student leaders have been actively involved with the project this year and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. It’s going to be great to see the results of their hard work with the great support of their families. Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” he said. “Every shoe box is personally decorated and contains items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box. It was quite the moment when the kids held up their boxes on assembly,” Richard added. Cooroy Community

Bank manager, Geoff Edwards says the project continues to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones. Last year when the shoe boxes arrived more than 3,000 kids turned up to receive one, so the need is there. We’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material to where it’s needed most. “This project is about community partnership. We’re delighted to collaborate with the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa on this project. Noosa Van Lines get the boxes to Melbourne and then Rotary get the shoe boxes to the school once they land in Timor Leste. Without each of us doing our part it wouldn’t

Without the support of parents, students and teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it’s become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the

Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Community Bank. Having just sponsored ABW for another year, manager, Geoff Edwards said the Community Bank will be proud to support the program again in 2017. “This is our ninth year as the major sponsor of ABW and the relationship

gets stronger as we become more involved in each facet of it,” Geoff said. “The mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their endless energies and talents. news Boost for hinterland projects in Council budget

COOROY RAG

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington has announced a range of projects for the hinterland in the 2016/2017 budget. These include a $250,000 project to formalise the bus turnaround area in front of Pomona State School. “These works will significantly improve safety in the pick-up and drop-off zone,” Cr Wellington said. “And they will have the added benefit of stopping the clouds of dust that have been finishing up in the school’s swimming pool.”

“Pomona will also see the development of a town centre master plan, to be developed in consultation with the community. Pomona’s skate park will also gain a replacement shade sail. “We’ll continue developing plans for an iconic playground to be situated in Cooroy. This is a very exciting project, and I know Cr Pardon has been a strong advocate. “And the historic Boiler House next to the Woodies and Camphor Laurel op-

erations will receive essential repair and safety works, hopefully bringing that work to fruition and allowing the site to once again open to the public,” Cr Wellington said. “Over in Cooran, $100,000 has been set aside to improve pathways leading to the State School.” “Money will be spent refurbishing the Boreen Point campground amenities, and also to provide more powered sites there,” Cr Wellington said. “I’m very pleased to an-

nounce the funding of a Six Mile Creek flood study. This will provide Council with a better understanding of flooding across the catchment, from Cooroy to Pomona and Cooran. It will also fulfil my promise to investigate residents’ flood concerns in the Lake Macdonald area,” Cr Wellington said. “Kinmond Creek Road at Cootharaba will be the scene of two new culverts at a total cost of $1.25 million. The existing culverts at Sandy Creek and Eastern

Branch are currently failing.” Hinterland roads will share in more than $400,000 worth of gravel road re-sheeting. But this may be just part of the story for our rural roads. “Council is currently finishing its assessment of our sealed road network. That gargantuan task will highlight where there are roads requiring attention. If rural sealed roads require immediate attention, there are emergent capital reserves available for this purpose,” Cr Wellington said.

Grants deliver early Christmas cheer Council is getting into the Christmas spirit early this year with more than $35,000 being allocated to support local festivities. A host of events have been approved to receive Community Festive Event Grants of between $3000 and $10,000 annually, for three years. This is another initiative of Council’s revamped Community Grants Program. Boreen Point’s New Year’s Eve @ the Lake event, Pomona Night of Lights, Tewantin’s Christmas Gala Carnival, Christmas in Cooroy, Noosa Carols on the River and the Kin Kin Community Christmas Tree event are

among the jolly recipients. The program is not limited to Christmas events, with Council also providing $10,000 annually to support Australia Day festivities – a partnership of Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club. “Council is pleased to help local organisations that deliver festive events enjoyed by so many in our shire,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “We are blessed to live amongst so many wonderful volunteers whose efforts reinforce the true spirit of Christmas. Each of these events is a celebration of community and each one is

quite special. They certainly deserve Council’s support.” Community Festive Event Grants (annually, for three years): New Year’s Eve @ the Lake (Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club) - $3000; Pomona Night of Lights (Cooroy & Pomona Lions Club) - $2400; Gala Christmas Carnival (Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch) - $3500; Australia Day (Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and Tewantin-Noosa Lions Club) - $10,000; Christmas in Cooroy (Cooroy Chamber of Commerce) $7000; Kin Kin Community Christmas Tree (Kin Kin Community Group) -

$1500; Noosa Carols on the River (Noosa Christian Outreach Centre) - $8000. This round of Community Projects Grants also provides a cash boost of between $900 and $15,000 for a wide range of social, arts, cultural, sporting and environment projects. It includes $15,000 for Noosa District Rugby Union Club to upgrade its field lights, just over $6000 for the Pomona Men’s Shed, $5000 for the Noosa International Film Festival, $2000 toward a sewing machine for the Boomerang Bags initiative, and $13,500 for the Tait Duke Community Cottage project.

Over $8000 is going toward the Kin Kin Tennis Club’s court upgrade and $2500 for Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club to deliver its Sailability Noosa initiative. This year marks the introduction of a brand new grants program - Signature Event Grants – which provide three-year recurrent funding to support some of our well-known and successful local events. The Festival of Water, the Noosa Show, Noosa Long Weekend Festival, King of the Mountain, and Booin Gari cultural event will each receive funding for three years.

Dog owners warned after koala found dead Council is appealing to dog owners to lock up their pets after a koala was mauled to death in a suspected domestic dog attack at Pomona. Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne said although Council couldn’t rule out wild dogs, the location and nature of the attack suggested a domestic dog was to blame. Dawn Couchman discovered the koala on

her property at the weekend. “We have been observing the healthy koala over the last three weeks and we found her recently on the ground having sustained terrible injuries,” Ms Couchman said. Mayor Tony Wellington urged dog owners to restrain their pets when outside, and prevent them from roaming, in an effort to avoid further koala

fatalities. “Too many residents on rural land assume they can just let their dogs roam. But the local laws are the same for rural as for urban residents. All dogs must be securely fenced in or restrained. It is particularly important that dogs are kept contained at night. Left unattended and uncontrolled, these domesticated creatures quickly revert to their predator origins,” Cr

COOROY I Page 4 - Cooroy Rag, July 6, 2016

Wellington said. Besides prosecution in the event of a dog attack, dog owners who allow their pets to wander also face fines in excess of $230 plus impoundment charges. “Recent Queensland research that used tracking collars on 200 koalas revealed that dogs were the most significant cause of koala mortality. In fact dogs, both wild and domestic, were

responsible for far more koala deaths than either disease or vehicle strikes,” Cr Wellington said. “Council is about to release its Koala Conservation Plan which lists a range of actions to better protect Noosa’s koalas. In the meantime, all dog owners can help improve the survival rate of our local koalas by taking greater responsibility for their pets.”

IN the last edition of Cooroy Rag I wrote an article reminding you it reminder that it’s THAT time of year again. Yes, it’s time to get ourselves organised with our finances and tax invoices in preparation for completing your tax return. Last article I spoke of group certificates, interest earned from shares and not forgetting claiming your bank fees. Don’t forget we have also had the new budget announced recently with some changes that will affect many people. For some this is a good time to check with their accountant and financial planner to see what affect these changes will have on them and their tax situation. In line with some of the recent changes brought about in the federal government budget, have you checked into the Medicare levy and private health insurance, to see if these will have an affect on your taxation? Some banks will offer health insurance and may have even had incentives if you joined up before the end of last financial year. What about superannuation and the cocontribution the federal government is offering? Is this applicable to you and have you made the appropriate contributions for the year? Now is a great time to check with your financial planner for the important changes that have occurred regarding superannuation. It’s also a great time to call in and see the wide range of services banks provide above and beyond your every day banking. Lastly, are you aware of the rebates the federal government is offering small businesses? Have you looked into these to see if your business can benefit? Your accountant can offer further information on this rebate and your local bank manager can provide options for financing business items.

If you would like to know more about how your bank can help you with health insurance, superannuation or business finance, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. 1 in 2 families at risk of unexpected bills Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* IT always makes sense to have a pool of rainy day savings because it’s a sure thing that at some stage the washing machine will break down or the car will need new tyres to pass rego. However new research shows around half the nation’s households would struggle with an unexpected bill. A recent study by comparison site Finder found only 41% of households have a stash of at least $5,000 to pay for unexpected expenses. One in three of us have less than $1,000 available in rainy day savings, and one in five don’t have enough saved to cover even a $500 setback. Without some spare cash under your belt, relatively minor life events can trigger a financial squeeze. Now, while I realise money is tight for plenty of families, having a slush fund of savings is like an insurance policy for your financial wellbeing. And it can be done even when there’s very little fat to trim from the household budget. Start by working out what you can realistically save each pay day – it

doesn’t have to be much. Then set up an automatic payment to directly debit this money from your everyday account to a separate savings account. If you’re struggling to find spare cash, look at areas where you can cut back or get a better deal. A colleague of mine recently took the step of shopping around to see if she could save on her car’s comprehensive insurance. With the help of Google, in the space of 20 minutes she had switched insurers and pocketed savings of $250. With tax time coming up, aim to deposit your tax refund into your savings account. Make it an annual habit to boost your cash fund. Be sure too to claim any government entitlements you may eligible for that can reduce household bills. For instance, families who receive the Family Tax Benefit may be able to apply for a Family Energy Rebate. The beauty of growing an emergency fund is that you won’t have to run up a credit card debt or turn to pay day lenders when the unexpected happens – op-

tions that will only make it harder to get ahead with your money. Once you have some savings behind you, avoid dipping into the account until it’s absolutely necessary. That means not raiding your rainy day savings to pay for those new golf clubs (not really an emergency). Reserve the money for genuine crises, store it

in a fee free savings account paying a consistently good rate and you can’t go wrong. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004. Authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706

Hilditch carried out his priestly duties for almost a decade before resigning his commission and taking up a position as National Marketing Director for a company that channelled its profits into missionary work and charitable endeavours. After moving to Queensland Pastor Hilditch found a home within the Anglican community and for the last several years has been in a lay leadership position as Priests Warden and assistant, Licenced Liturgical Assistant and is the only Lay person with a Licence to preach in the parish. Pastor Hilditch says that it is important to keep in contact and communicate with both regular and occasional attendees of the Anglican Faith Community. He believes that there are some who would not be aware of service time changes and the availability of home visits with communion and prayer for the sick. According to the Bureau of Statistics there are around 1600 people in the area the church serves who identify themselves with the Anglican expression of faith and Pastor Hilditch says that it would be nice to see them at church occasionally. He can be contacted directly for any Pastoral needs on 0419 028 950 or through the Parish office 5485 1218.

Cooroy Dolphins took 26 swimmers to Nanango Swimming Carnival on the weekend and came home with some amazing results. The weather was frosty and overcast and the kids turned a little blue but that didn’t stop them from swimming fast. We saw fantastic team spirit from the Dolphins as they were cheering each other on throughout the day. Cooroy Dolphins had both the youngest swimmer at the carnival – Laila Jowett (3) and the oldest with Coach Andrew Cowan showing the kids how it is done. His efforts saw him break 3 pool records during the course of the carnival. The Dolphins came away with over 100 PB’s (personal bests), 39 medals, 3 pool records and 2 age champions. Coach Andrew Cowan said “It was exciting to see so many Cooroy Dolphins taking part in this carnival. Winter we generally see everything slow

down and the kids move onto other winter sports but not at Cooroy. We have kids from 3 years of age and upwards competing at carnivals. So we are supporting kids who are looking to have fun, hang out with their friends and develop their swimming skills with the main aim of participation. Then we have the other end of the spectrum were we have swimmers aiming to qualify for states and nationals and are working hard to achieve some fast times. It’s great to be able to cater for them all and Nanango shows that we can do it, the kids are having great time and swimming fast. So as a Coach you ask for any more than that” 8 year old girls Age Champion Sophie Jansen said “I had a really fun weekend and I got to see friends I haven’t seen in a while. I am also really excited about getting age champion. I can’t wait for the next carnival.”

Rugfest speading the warmth RUGFEST 2016 will be held in the Pomona Memorial Hall on Saturday, 16th July. This is the 6th annual occurrence of this popular event, where 40 woolen rugs/waggas are auctioned cent sale style while a beautiful soup luncheon is served. Sweets and tea/coffee are also available. Proceeds this year are going to the Canossian Health and Social Centre which is situated near the Tondo in the Philippines. The rugs have been constructed by a group of ladies from the Noosa and Hinterland Catholic communities, who have met at weekly Sewing Bees in Pomona. Much of the fabric used has come from re-

cycled woolen garments or donated from people’s stashes of unfinished projects. After not holding the event last year, Brenda Carlos, Rugfest Coordinator, said many people made contact saying they missed the event and had fabric to donate and wanted the event to continue. “Our philosophy,” Brenda said, “is to spread warmth – physical warmth with the actual rugs, community warmth of a gathering sharing a lovely meal and, of course, sharing the proceeds to bring a little warmth and comfort to the very poor, this year, to those living in the Tondo slums in the Philippines.

We also like to think we are doing our bit for the environment by upcycling discarded fabric and garments, and by cutting down on using electric heating by encouraging the use of such cosy rugs” As well as the 40 rugs up for auction, there will be a variety of vintage linen and napery for sale. We also have an attractive array of woolen hats, and, for the craftlover, supplies of beads, buttons and laces, for sale. This year we have added also a gourmet selection of preserves, guaranteed to tantalise the tastebuds. There will be a multidraw raffle of very worthy prizes and lucky door prizes, generously donated by lo-

HARDWARE cal businesses. All in all, this is a very enjoyable event, so come along with your friends. Tickets can be prepurchased at Noosa Catholic Parish Office, the Pomona Post office, Walk on Wheels, Rene St, Noosa and at any of the Sunday masses or at the

door on the day. The cost of $20 covers lunch and includes 60 auction tickets. Raffle and extra auction tickets can be bought at the event. Doors open 10.30; soup will be served around noon and rugs drawn during lunch.

Imbil takes the reins for national endurance championships

Matthew Sample, winner of the highly acclaimed Tom Quilty Cup in 2009 with his horses (Tarrangower Crescendo on the left and Brookleigh Ricardo on the right) and dog Eddie. THE Mary Valley will play host to the 2016 Equestrian Australia Endurance Championships when Australia’s first purpose-built endurance complex opens its paddocks to riders from across the country between 14-17 July. The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) event has been awarded to the newly founded Imbil-based Sterling Crossing

Endurance Association which is preparing to welcome over 50 competitors from across the country to the region. Matt Sample, owner of Sterling Endurance Arabians and founder of the club, said he was delighted to host the internationally accredited event which would see the best in the sport battle it out for the national title over distances of 82, 120 and 160 kilometres. “Hosting the Australian

Championships at our new facility is certainly a wonderful way to launch the ride base which we have been working on perfecting since April 2015,” said Mr Sample. “This event requires riders to qualify and given the entry requirements are quite stringent, we expect the country’s top endurance riders to converge on Imbil for the four-day event.” “Endurance is quite unique in that it results in a very strong bond between horse and rider due to the high level of trust and the longevity of the horse in the sport,” said Mr Sample. “While many equestrian events only see horses compete for a few years, endurance horses come into their own at around eight years of age and can then compete comfortably until 15 years of age or more.” “When you’re starting a ride at 3am in the morning and riding for over nine hours in a 160km event, it’s like sharing an adventure with your best friend - it’s a very special experience. Endurance

Community Connect morning tea ALBERTINA Banks of IndonesianDutch background and now for many years a Sunshine Coast Indonesian Language & Culture teacher, will fascinate and delight you with her knowledge and insights about Indonesia. Including gorgeous photographs and also historical and contemporary facts, Albertina will present a captivating PowerPoint presentation about Indonesia, our largest neighbour to the north. Even though a million Australians visit Bali every year, many people do not know much about our Indonesian neighbours. Based on her own experiences, travelling many times to Sumatra and Java, Albertina says that the Indonesian people are some of the friendliest, kindest and most respectful people you can ever meet. Visitors are treated like very important guests, especially seniors whose knowledge and status is highly revered!

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Albertina will also talk about her passion for the preservation of the unique Biosphere Regions of Sumatra where people can travel to see orangutans in their natural state, volcanoes and the beautiful Lake Toba, an enormous inland lake with lies 900m above sea level. You will also get the opportunity to sample Indonesian tasty treats and hear the language being spoken by some of Albertina’s students, who are now becoming ‘everyday fluent’, after just 6 months of study. New Indonesian Fun & Easy classes -‘Speak in 6 weeks’ will be starting at the end of July, early August at the Pomona Community House. Date: Wednesday 20th July Time: 9.30am – 11.00am Venue: Lawson Shed, Pomona Cost: Gold coin donation – includes Indonesian treats morning tea. Bookings – 5485 2427.

riders have the utmost respect and admiration for their horses as the sport requires the horse to have exceptional athleticism, intuition, intelligence and a very competitive nature.” “To this end Arabians are the most suited breed for endurance - they love it, it’s in their blood and the thrill of starting a ride is palpable for both the rider and the horse.” Mr Sample’s family has been involved with the sport for over 40 years with Matthew, his brother Brook and father Bob sharing over 20 Tom Quilty Cup titles - the sport’s most prestigious annual gold cup event which was pioneered by R.M. Williams and his friend Tom Quilty in 1966. The family, who also breed and train Arabians, have long had the dream to create a purpose-built endurance facility and this year that dream will become a reality. “There is no facility in Australia that is custom built for endurance purposes with many events being run out of showgrounds which are less than ideal venues,”

said Mr Sample. “The Sterling Crossing Endurance complex will have a 60m x 40m fully lit, undercover vetting area and a second turfed area of the same size alongside. This will provide optimal conditions for vets to check the horses depending on daylight available and weather conditions.” “The facility will also offer designated camping areas for participants, the horses and support crews, officials and volunteers. We expect there will be at least 500 additional people in the area for the championship with many coming up to five days prior to the event to give their horses the opportunity to recover from their travels.” The July event will also include a 160km Australian Endurance Riders Association (AERA) ride which assists riders to prepare and qualify for the 2016 Tom Quilty Cup event. The event is open to the public and to find out more please visit www.sterlingcrossing endurance.asn.au.

Members of the Cooroy Probus Club enjoying a game of lawn bowls at Pomona. Lawn bowls at Pomona is certainly worth a try. The Probus Club of Cooroy returned to the Pomona Bowling Club for another fun day … our fourth in four years. Local Pomona bowlers, Charlie, Elizabeth and Jill, welcomed us with a wonderful Devonshire morning tea, a brief ‘ how to do it ‘ lawn bowls lesson and then set us free to try to master the game. Lots of laughs, a few bowls sent down on the wrong bias, but generally our skills have improved over the years. The restaurant, too is worthy of a try. They spoil us with a delicious, reasonably priced lunch, well presented that was enjoyed by all. This was a must do again activity! Anyone interested in joining our local Probus

Anglican Fete THE tradition of the Noosa Hinterland Anglicans holding a Fete and Garage in Cooroy is continuing this year. This will be on Saturday 6th August commencing at 8am. Our people are already making craft items, jams and pickles and all the popular items sold at the fete. The Fete has been running for over twenty years and has been well supported by the local and surrounding communities. Many people have told us they enjoy searching for a bargain in the stalls, or looking for plants and sharing a coffee and scones with friends. This year our Garage Sale items will be smaller in nature. To make handling easier we are concentrating on items easily handled by one person and moved in a car boot. If people have saleable items they wish to donate for recycling through the Garage Sale, they can leave a message at the Parish Office 54851218. This would be much appreciated.

Bespoke Paper - Carnivale is an exuberant collection of works on, and of, paper. showcasing the diversity and scope of what paper artists can create from their gentle art form. From whimsical paper costumes to harmonious symphonies of the earthy tones of papers handmade through ingenious alchemy from backyard plants and weeds, this exhibition offers a new appreciation for the possibilities of paper. Riding for cancer research LOCAL guy David Upperdine has set himself a challenge to raise money for cancer research. Having just recently started cycling he will be riding in the MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer which is a 200k event held in October this year with all money raised going towards cancer research benefiting the Harry Perkins Research Institute. David is committed to the hope that one day there will be an end to cancer as he has seen the effects it has had on his friends and family. With this in mind he will be fundraising to enable research to keep going and for new research to be developed. David has set himself a fundraising challenge of $2500 with fundraising ventures including car washing, a themed party night at a local bar and through his online MACA Ride to Conquer Link www.conquercancer.org.au where all donations are tax deductible. His rider number is 101273-2 and he will be riding with veteran Ride to Conquer Cancer team Vision Crusaders. Vision Crusaders have been very active in the cycling challenge since the first event took place six years ago. David is looking for donations and the possibility that local businesses could hop on board and donate to the cause that is very close to his heart. Corporate sponsorship would be fantastic so if there is a business wishing to put their name to a very worthy cause such as cancer research, please contact David at davidupperdine5@gmail.com David says “now is the time to act so that the pain and heartache felt by cancer sufferers and their families ends and together it is achievable”. Friend David on his Facebook page – David Upperdine and lend your support.

WOMEN taking part in Noosa Council’s Active Mums program say it’s a great way to ease back into exercise and fitness after childbirth. “All the ladies know exactly what you’re going through, all the instructors know exactly what you’re going through – that removed a huge barrier for me,” mother-of-one, Tara, said. Fellow mum Sandra said the classes were a welcome alternative to the traditional gym environment. “I tried the gym and did a couple of the classes but it really wasn’t for me, I didn’t like the competitive nature of it,” she said. Tara and Sandra are among 320 mums to realise the benefits of the Noosa Council program, which provides free and affordable access to a wide range of activities in partnership with local businesses. Council Community Development Officer Amanda Tie said the atmosphere was relaxed and supportive, with childcare available. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and places are still available in activities such as Pilates, yoga, standup paddling, core conditioning, boxfit, aqua aerobics, group fitness and more. “All of the activities consider the physical constraints and limitations mums face after child birth,” Ms Tie said. Mother-of-two Emma said Council’s Active Mums Noosa program had been life changing. “I didn’t realise that I’d suffered from post-natal depression since I gave birth to my first son three years ago, but since coming to the Active Mums program I just feel like my sparkle has returned,” she said. Sandra said: “This is a fantastic program that Noosa Council has been able to provide.” “I keep coming back because I can see the results – I’ve got more energy and I have lost weight,” said motherof-two, Nadja. Activities are held at various locations from Sunshine Beach to Cooran. For more information visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/active-mums The Queensland Government provided $20,000 to Noosa Council for Active Mums Noosa to get women active for life.

The power of a good mentor and positivity PEOPLE ask “why should we put our children in to martial arts?” “My answer is simple,” says martial arts instructor Mr Habershon. “ If you put them into the right martial arts school and have the right type of instructor/mentor children will learn respect, self-control and discipline. And so much more.” At Matt Fiddes Martial Arts here in Cooroy we would like to share an amazing story with you. We have a student, Jordan Bonnici, who started with us just over a year ago. Do you suffer with sleep apnoea? Margaret Curtis is the Manager of the Cooroy Office of Healthy Sleep Solutions Sunshine Coast, and is a qualified Sleep Technician trained in sleep testing and management of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. Healthy Sleep Solutions offers a complete patient pathway for sleep apnoea patients, from testing, diagnosis, introduction to therapy, ongoing support, data downloads and equipment purchases and all of these services are available at her Cooroy Sleep Apnoea Clinic located in the Life Enhancing Centre, 48 Elm Street, Cooroy. Sleep Apnoea is a com-

mon condition that may affect up to 1 in 4 Australian adults. Many people do not realise how sleep apnoea may be affecting their health or the lives of their partners. The most common form of Sleep Apnoea is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea occurs when the walls of the throat come together during sleep and blocking off the upper airway. Breathing stops for a period of time, generally between a few seconds and up to one minute, which causes the oxygen level in your blood to fall. This alerts the brain to wake the body to begin breathing

again. The sleeper rouses slightly, opens the upper airway, typically snorts and gasps, then drifts back to sleep almost immediately. These alerts prevent the brain from resting during the night and often the person wakes in the morning feeling unrefreshed and tired during the day. People with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may experience a range of symptoms as a result of their condition, many of which are a reflection of the poor quality of sleep association with the condition. The most common symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring/and or gasping or choking whilst

asleep, morning headaches, impaired concentration, short-term memory loss, depression, emotional instability/irritability, frequent night-time urination. Sleep apnoea is also very common in people who are overweight and the tiredness caused by sleep apnoea can make it difficult to lose weight. There is strong evidence that suggests people with moderate to severe forms of the condition die prematurely4. Left untreated, sleep apnoea strongly increases the risk of heart attack5, stroke6 and is associated with other cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure7 and type 2 diabetes8

making it more difficult to control these conditions. Sufferers of sleep apnoea are also 7 times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident9 and more likely to experience an injury in the workplace9 than people without OSA. Should you have any of these symptoms, particularly if you are a chronic snorer, then talk to your Doctor about having a home sleep study to check if you have sleep apnoea. Healthy sleep Solutions offers a simple overnight sleep study in the comfort of your own home. Healthy Sleep Solutions is Australia’s premier provider of home sleep tests,

treatment solutions, CPAP sales and ongoing management of sleep apnoea. A home sleep study involves no expensive hospital visits and you sleep at home in your own bed. The diagnostic test is Medicare accredited, DVA accredited and Queensland Health accredited, and all sleep studies are scored by sleep scientists and diagnosed and reported on by independent accredited Sleep Physicians As well as their regional office at Cooroy, Healthy Sleep Solutions has established sleep clinics located through the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast including Maleny, Pomona, Imbil,

moisturise your skin well when you get out; When using a new cosmetic, try testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such as your forearm. That way if you experience a reaction, you can avoid using it again; Try to avoid scratching the skin, as this can lead to infection or scarring – keep your fingernails short; Choose mild/unscented laundry detergent.

Remember to consult one of our pharmacists should your symptoms persist. We have many more products such as steroid creams and antihistamines, and even complementary therapies which may be beneficial for your skin. Don’t suffer unnecessarily with skin conditions. Speak to Jacqui at LiveLife pharmacist Cooroy today and start living!!!

Tips for dealing with eczema ECZEMA, also called dermatitis, is a group of conditions in which the skin is dry, itchy and scaly (note: not “hot,” which is usually more a sign of infection). In severe outbreaks the skin may become raw, red and bleeding. It affects up to 30% of pre-school aged children (5 years or under), and 1 in 6 schoolaged children in Australia Eczema is thought to be triggered by different

factors for different people. Some common examples include: Irritants (e.g. soaps and shampoos); Allergens (e.g. dust mites and pet hair); Microbes (e.g. some types of virus and bacteria); Hot/cold temperatures (and humidity changes that accompany these); Foods (e.g. dairy products and eggs); Stress; Hormones. Some of us live with this skin condition every day

of our lives. The team at your LiveLife Pharmacy are here to help you and your family to look after your skin. Some lifestyle hints that we may recommend include: Avoid excessively hot water when showering and bathing; When towelling dry, pat rather than rub your skin; Apply cool, wet compresses – the affected area may even be covered with bandages and dressings

to help protect the skin and prevent scratching; Avoid dry conditions (e.g. air conditioners and heaters); Avoid soap based products - Use a soap-free cleanser or bath oil. Also try to avoid colours and fragrances in these cleansers; Apply a thick moisturiser to the skin once or twice daily (best applied immediately after a shower/bath to retain the moisture in the skin).

Consider increasing this frequency of application if living/working in a dry/ air-conditions/heated environment; Wear clothes made of natural fibres where possible, so the skin may breathe; Avoid any known triggers and irritants; Wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent; Avoid chlorinated pools if possible. Otherwise, ensure you shower then

EUMUNDI Dragons are always on the lookout for more players in n the U6-U12 age divisions. To join our club, please send an inquiry by e-mail to admin@dragonsrugby union.org.au The U8’s Eumundi Dragons vs Noosa Reds played at Maleny. It was a tough loss for the Dragons to the wellformed Noosa, but with no win in sight the boys still fought on. When cracks would begin to show, they united as a team against the opposition with every step. Not far in, Jett saw a chance and took it with a nail bitting save - a tackle just millimetres from the try line (any Agrader would have been impressed with that one). He scored as well with a scrape through try. What a mighty effort! Saxon took it to the next level scoring 3 out of the 4 tries – stunning! Of course, he could never have done it without the help of the

whole team brilliantly setting up plays to be proud of. Saxon received best and fairest as awarded by the Noosa team. Jack-the-Terrier had an impressive game slipping through gaps aplenty and passing on just at the right time to result in advantages. I would have given Jack a bravery award for the hard hit he took that sent a few shivers up the spine! T.J’s never say die attitude was on display with magic hands and never shying away from taking a hit and his responses to the oppositions of fence unwavering. The final score was a 10 – 4 Noosa win but they never gave up those mighty Dragons. The U7’s Eumundi Dragons vs Brothers Wolves was an evenly matched game, thrilling for all the sideline supporters and a fun game enjoyed by both teams. As usual, Jett did his

famous power run straight up the side...3 times! narrowly avoiding the Brothers well organised defences. Jack the Terrier, was back for more and eager to play a key role which he did brilliantly, placing 2 tries from 2 dropped balls and continued to assist with Eumundi’s superior defence. Tom’s awesome contribution to Eumundi’s defence and offense was rewarded with a spectacular and well-deserved dive try. Cyclone Charlie turned up the heat using tactics to drive the opposition apart before rocketing straight down the middle with sheer courage and determination scoring a magnificent try. A big thanks to the two Brothers players for helping us make up numbers. Ella the speedy who scored a try for us and Jake the gun defender - well done! The final score 8-8 a welcomed tie to the Mighty Dragons!

Keeping in Touch Our U10’s finals got proceedings underway before the worst of the weather hit. This season has seen a number of new players to our game in this division and the progression of skill improvement in this age group has been outstanding. Running Rebels continued their undefeated season in style against the Tornadoes. This was a great game by all players from both teams but the Rebels have just been unstoppable. Fireballs and Lava Boys entertained their supporters with Lava Boys taking the match. Ice Angels and GSLC Boys put on a terrific show and with the score card all locked up at full time the game headed into a drop off. This was a huge learning

curve for our youngsters, many of whom hadn’t even seen a drop off let alone participate in one. After a few close attempts from both teams GSLC managed to score the winning touchdown. The Player of the Season Awards in this age division, judged on continued display of good sportsmanship throughout the season to fellow team mates, opposition and officials were awarded to Alla Christensen and Brandon Dwyer. The U12 division saw SBSS play against Angels with Attitude and Foxy Rebels take on GSLC (girls). Both matches were captivating with SBSS and Foxy Rebels coming away with top honours. All of our girls teams have had

marvellous seasons, even being tossed in against the boys at some stages which no doubt has helped with both their attack and defensive capabilities. Our U12 boys division saw the unusual situation of a three way final system between GSLC, Speed Demons and Knights. In slippery conditions ball security was paramount and Knights seemed to be able to capitalise on this to take out the Grand Final, followed very closely by Speed Demons and GSLC. All three games were contested in great spirit and all of the boys should be congratulated for their efforts. Parker Dean and Curtis Dean were well deserved recipients of the Player of the Season Award in this age group.

Close results were the order of the day in the U14/ 16 girls division with SBSHS just managing to hold out Saints. Saints were threatening to even up the score right up until the final play as the siren sounded. The match between Noosa Chicks and Feisty Chicks ended in the second drop off of the day with Noosa Chicks prevailing in the tight tussle. The U14/ 16 boys division saw another couple of riveting games with NDSHS proving too strong for NCC and despite a late couple of touchdowns to the Hairy Man, GSLC stood firm to take the win. A lot of our U14/16 boys and girls have stepped up to play in our senior competition this season and the improvement in

their individual games has been outstanding. Player of the Season was awarded to Georgia Haack and Jack Herriman for their respective divisions. This season the Referee Encouragement Award went to Tamatoa Casimiro and Referee of the Season was awarded to Harrison Lea. Well done to you both. Thanks to Anthony Zipf from Cooroy Supa IGA with their generous donation of a sausage sizzle. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for details on our next season. Junior sign on will be Wednesday 20th July. Come and join the fun! Until the next touchdown…

Cutter Cutter Cutter . . . that’s our motto NO matter who you play, where you play or whether you are winning or losing, the Cutters never give up, that’s Cutter Footy. Playing against the top side in Division 2 saw a loss to the Cutters against Beerwah, but the players played their heart out right to the very end. With players away, injured as well as playing sick, the Cutters gave it their all. We are so very proud of them and the game was still very entertaining if you took any notice of the crowd. Brian Lashford (aka Rooster) put up heaps of hits and had an amazing game, giving him player of the match. On the upside, Cutters played Yandina on the weekend and had a fantastic win 26-10. Still having players out, the mighty Cutters showed us what footy is all about, even against the odds on the day. Kevin Aspinall (aka Nugget) got right into the game, literally, and took player of the match. It was a tough
