Who will be the King of the Mountain?

July 8, 2015 IN THIS ISSUE

ABW delivers a week to remember Page 3

Love in a shoebox Page 4

The famous King of the Mountain Challenge is on Sunday July 26 by Debra Palmen THE King of the Mountain Festival features the famous Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. This is a race in which 100 competitors run at top speed from the centre of Pomona to the top of Mt Cooroora, and back down the mountain even faster. It’s tough, demanding and dangerous. Only 100 competitors are permitted to run in the Mountain Challenge, but for everyone else the Festival will offer plenty to interest and entertain. The Heritage Market is expecting about 90 stalls, including a good variety of food so visitors will have a great selection to picnic in the park. As well as the usual fish and chips, hotdogs and hamburgers, you will find French, Thai, German, Italian, and Japanese cuisine. Then, if you have room, you can indulge in strawberries, a variety of ice-cream flavours or pintsized pancakes for dessert. If you’d prefer to feel good about how much you’re eating, you can generate the power to make yourself a fruit smoothie by ped-

alling a bicycle. Vintage steam engines from the Wide Bay and Gympie Vintage Machinery Clubs will be on display, and they are popular with all age groups. In addition, there will be stalls offering handmade jewellery, art, leatherwork and wood work, soaps of all fragrances, together with essential oils, ladies, children’s and baby’s fashions, crystals and gem stones. Alpacas (and their carers) will be in attendance, together with a stand showcasing clothes made from their fleece. They are always a big hit with the youngsters, as will be the Animal Farm petting zoo. Also popular will be the Greyhound Rescue stand with a number of their sweet-natured dogs on show, and Smart Puppies assistance dogs, who will bring some puppies-in-training. All antiques shops in Pomona will be open for trade, nicely supplemented by a good quality Antiques Fair. For the motoring enthusiasts there will two car shows, featuring the Mini Miners Club and the Combined Coastal Car Club Cooroy.

Prizes totalling $1000 will be up for grabs in the Pomona True Value King of the Skate Park competition. And let’s not forget the dedicated Pomona Firefighters, who will be setting fire to display kitchens to demonstrate the best way to extinguish them, and showing off their new Bronto fire truck. If you’re ready to run but not yet ready to tackle the International Mountain Challenge, there will be a variety of races on the day, including the Zinc Mountain Dash, the E Fitness Pram Push and the Nestle 3km Fam-

ily Fun Run. Primary schools in the region will compete in relay runs and tugs-of-war, and local businesses and organisations will again support the Festival by taking part in the Corporate tugof-war (although the Fire Fighters are determined to retain the title). If racing about and tugs-ofwar are a little too much, there will be a Zumba demonstration to get your heart pumping, and live music so you can dance the afternoon away. For those who like their music to be more rousing, the Sun-

THE Pomona King of the Mountain Festival remains one of the best opportunities for our community to get together in the hinterland. Who would have thought a simple bet in a pub in 1958 would see us all here in 2015 preparing to cheer on amazing athletes and celebrate hard working volunteers - particularly the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. Through its Pomona Agency of Bendigo Bank, which opened in April - the parent company, Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd has again committed $6,000 to the staging of the event. Pomona King of the Mountain chairperson, Heather Manders said the committee is delighted

shine Coast Caledonian Pipes and Drums will be marching as well as featuring on the main stage. The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, with Noosa Council pitching in as a major grant sponsor and Tourism Noosa also supporting the Festival via a small grant. This year the Festival will be held on Sunday, 26 July. Be sure to pencil that date into your diaries and calendars because it will be a great day, with something for everyone.

to have the Community Bank remain such a great supporter of the festival. “Our Pomona King of the Mountain committee is very grateful for the sponsorship Bendigo Bank provides and the great things they do for Pomona and the Noosa hinterland. The annual festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, proudly sponsored by the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank, Noosa Council, IGA Pomona, Zinc 96.1, Raine and Horne Pomona, Nestlé, Cooroy Rag, Canesaid Pty Ltd, Pomona True Value Hardware, E Fitness, Tourism Noosa, Zinc 96.1, Page Furnishers, Design Divaz, Pomona SES, Pomona Cadets and many more.

ABW delivers a week to remember

The Switched On Electronics team are crowned champions at the 2015 Awards on 25 June

NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) has now successfully hosted Australian Business Week for the twelfth straight year and their appetite for the program hasn’t waned. Australian Business Week (ABW) offered students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. In an exciting one-week intensive program, students experienced what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. They worked as part of a team managing their own business. This year students ran a Consumer Electronics Retail store and with the help of a business and teacher mentor discovered the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century. Over the week students performed tasks in teams ranging from forming a company, assigning roles and responsibilities in the company and reviewing key business areas. They had to make decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This year’s 15 teams also developed a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team prepared a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It made for a full week but left each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. This year, the team named Switched On Electronics were crowned Grand Champions. The winning team’s appointed CEO, Finn Neville said the ABW experience had not only benefited the Switched On team, but all who took part. “We’ve learnt so many valuable lessons this week - how to work together and consider everyone’s opinions. We were thrilled to have been given this opportunity to develop our skills in business management even though most of us haven’t had business studies as a course. We’re especially thankful to our mentors, John Masterman and Clifton Sim, who gave their time to guide us and advise us,” Finn said. Without the support of parents, students and teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it’s become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Community Bank. Having just completed sponsoring ABW for another year, Cooroy branch Customer Relationship Officer, Karl Doss said the Community Bank will be proud to support ABW again in 2016. “This is our eighth year as the major sponsor of ABW and the relationship gets stronger as we become more involved in each facet of it,” Karl said. “The mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their endless energies and talents. One of our Community Bank board directors, Fred Broomhall was also on hand to assist during the week of mentoring and we’re both delighted to add this to our financial assistance to the program. “This year ABW was a resounding success and a credit to its co-ordinator Alison Rexa and school Principal Chris Roff. I encourage any local business owner who hasn’t been involved in ABW to find out more about the program and get involved in 2016. Some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Karl added. If you would like to know more about ABW or how you can support the future of the program, contact the ABW program co-ordinator Alison Rexa at NDSHS on 5472 2234.

From our schools with love LIFE at school will soon be a lot easier for a lot of children in East Timor. And it’s because some of our local students started thinking inside the box. Cooroy State School students assembled hundreds of educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu - a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 primary school age. But the area also caters for other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies What’s really impressive is that the 697 shoe boxes collected, by Rotarians and parents from Cooroy & Noosa foot wear store holders, will join one thousand others from Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment which will change the lives of over 1,500 kids. Community spirit and working together can change peoples lives. A big thank you to Cooroy Shoes, Noosa Shoes, Feet First, Get Set, and all other contributors. An amazing collection and superb support. Thank you to the children, the parents the teachers the Chaplin, Bendigo Bank, Rotary Club of Noosa and the Rotary Club of Cooroy.

Even the littlies contributed After a visit by Mrs Lafferty and ‘Chappie’ from the Cooroy State School, children and staff at Cooroy Community Kindergarten were excited about the idea of helping other children not as lucky as them. They got straight to work. They painted the boxes first and then pasted things on them like feathers and glitter to make them beautiful. Inside the box lid the staff pasted a picture of the children who had made them and added a little bit of information about them. Lastly the children filled the boxes with the gifts their families had brought for the children. They also added a beanie that the honorary kindy great grandmother, Libby Pigdon had knitted for them. The completed boxes were given to Mrs Lafferty and Chappie so they could be sent off with all the other boxes from Cooroy State School to East Timor. What a great project. Cooroy Community Kindergarten was very proud to be part of it.

Corruption – is it the new industry?

Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group

Chiropractic Robert C. Hilditch D.C.

With all the bureaucrats and watch-dogs, it’s really worrying and strange, That such corruption occurs, over such a wide range. Pretty well every day, in the media, there’s a story about a case, Of someone, often prominent, being in deep disgrace. First we had the cricket, then some dodgy deals at banks, Later on a little embarrassment in political ranks. FIFA then stole the show, and began the shaming of names, Before the dramatic revelations surrounding the Olympic Games. The legal eagles of course, were licking their collective lips, At the vision of those fees, at their legal fingertips. The scale of monies involved, is really quite substantial, And tempting to those people, dishonest in matters financial. Then the trade in drugs arose, with ‘ice’ and all that other stuff, And the citizens were appalled … and cried “We’ve had enough!” But no, it was not to end, and sadly more cases came to light, Corruption was becoming an industry in its very own right. All these commissions, red tape, inspectors by the score, Auditors, regulations, highly paid bureaucrats, and more. Surely there is some way, the authorities, or a business guru, Would think up a scheme and come to the rescue. The politicians could apply their undoubted expertise, Which would, of course, require a trip overseas. And appoint an expensive Royal Commission, To enquire if it was okay to have a Royal Commission. Jim Dunstan Do not walk behind me – I may not lead. Do not walk in front of me – I may not follow. Walk beside me and be my friend.

WHETHER a beginner or accomplished book artist, the participants in the artists’ books at the PopUp Art Series Exhibition at the Butter Factory Cooroy share a love of handmade papers, printmaking and book bindings. Their display showcases a diversity of book structures manipulating image, text and form to bind or unravel an experience, map and document a journey or simply use the materials to create works of the imagination. Participating book artist and book exhibition curator, Maryke Stagg, said at her presentation to Butter Factory visitors on Saturday, “today book art has become quite extraordinary. It is not just creative art but there is a lot of scholarly application”; citing that some artists have done their PhD in Book Art.” Maryke explained that the definition of what comprises an artist book is elusive “because it might comprise text as image or image as text; form where it is sequential or it can be unconventional and in a form that looks nothing like a book”. After Maryke’s presentation, fellow book artist Judy Barrass conducted a workshop on how to make a book. The Butter Factory over the next three months will be home to exhibits from over 50 artists and craftspersons featuring paintings in all media, sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, jewelry, book and print making. fabric and wearable art. The entire display will be changed on a monthly basis. To find out more – www.noosa.qld.gov.au/butterfactory-arts-centre or phone 5329 6580 .

MANY of you may have already been to your accountant and are in the throes of completing your tax return for another year. Whether this has happened or if it’s still on your ‘to do’ list, this new financial year will be a big one in terms of the national and global financial position. Life is busier for everyone now than it’s ever been and weeks can soon become months, so why not take a little time now to reflect on the year that was and what could be the challenges of this new financial year? Put plans in place now before having the feeling that your budget will be stretched to breaking point. Perhaps it’s time to make that new financial year resolution? But how can we best achieve that and what steps can we take? Firstly, I believe a realistic budget is the foundation block required - a budget that identifies all your expenses, allows for you, your family or your busi-

ness to have those savings for a rainy day or that unexpected bill and savings for those times you want to do something as a treat. For a lot of Australians, the home mortgage is the major household expense and yet sometimes that is an area that is not reviewed on a regular basis or included in a plan for the year. Why not take this time to do a health check on your mortgage? Why not contact your bank and ask for some time to sit down and review your options? Options such as mortgage offset accounts, changing to a different type of loan, paying extra into your home loan or even just simply changing the way you pay your loan may see a saving to your home loan. It’s also a great time

for small businesses to act on the recently introduced by the Federal Government. Small businesses will now officially get access to a $20,000 tax write-off to purchase items relating to their business after legislation passed in the Senate on 15 June. This incentive can be coupled with great rates on Equipment Finance packages, so put that new financial year resolution together and ring your local bank manager. Their advice and input could make your new financial year a happy one. If you would like to know more about any of these services at our Cooroy Community Bank branch, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

USING the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste, ABC Sunshine Coast garden presenter, Horticulturist Paul Plant explained recently to the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends workshop attendees how to enhance their pleasure in the garden. “Many memories are based on smells and sounds and touch – puppy smell/sea breeze/baby’s skin,” explained Paul. “As we get older, sight will wane ... sense of smell and touch are important for us to connect with places, especially the garden.”

Country Noosa update AS you know, it has been a busy time with Council currently developing both the Social Plan and Local Economic Plans, with drafts due to come out by September for community consultation. You can follow the progress as well as putting your thoughts forward through the YourSayNoosa portal on the Councils website. Preparations are also underway for the writing of the new Noosa Plan in 2016. This planning instrument is a vital guideline in the decision making process for Council staff and Councillors, with zones directing what types of developments go where, and the codes assisting in the parameters in which these developments are constructed and cover a broad range from your houses through to community infrastructure. Both the Social and Economic plans assist in identifying gaps in the current Noosa Plan, with issues so far identified being the need for affordable housing options, appropriately zoned land for industry and the growing niche farming sector, facilities for our aging demographic and the ever changing requirements for residents who seek a more sustainable lifestyle with preferences to walk/bike to the shops and dual living. Councillors are currently in Budget deliberations and is never an easy task! No different than how residents tackle their own household budget, the prioritization of requests is determined by a lengthy process which include safety, overall resident benefit and for infrastructure, the future depreciation and maintenance costs which increase the following year’s operational budget. This process is assisted when our communities, especially in Country Noosa, present a united proposal for capital works, instead of a multitude of fragmented requests which can at times be contradictive to one another. In speaking with the Chamber of Commerce, CARA and the Hinterland Alliance, the items identified have been put forward for either this year

www.cooroyrag.com.au

or as part of the 5 Year Cap Works Program. The major that will have the most benefit to Country Noosa is the sealing of Dr Pages Road, not only from an economic benefit, but from a day to day access angle. You may have heard me speak of the ‘Noosa Country Run’ to open up opportunity for our rural communities in tourism and in the wellness, creative , and niche farming industries to name just a couple. The sealing of Dr Pages will enable this, however it is up to you as to how you utilise this. There have been a number of side initiatives that I have been working on. This includes Tourism Noosa’s ‘Country Noosa Drive’, planning amendments and signage, a Rural Action Plan for inclusion in the Local Economic Plan, and an Unemployment and Underemployment Roundtable which is busily connecting challenges and opportunities, especially in our rural communities who display not only a poor score on the Socio Economic Index, but suffer from the transport issue which we are tackling in the Transport Strategy with your help. I will keep you updated as we progress. The Myall Street intersection has been prominent in the news so I will just touch on as through Facebook I have been surprised at the lack of knowledge from

residents about this particular issue. Even though a State Government responsibility, Councillors and Council have been busily lobbying in the background, and have been discussing options regarding. Remember, if Council gets involved, this is YOUR money, and as a Councillor I am mindful that for every issue that is a State item that we enter into, we do set an expectation that local government will pay for State infrastructure. So please, before getting into the newspapers and Facebook demanding action on items that are not within Councils domain, it is YOUR rates that you are asking to be spent. As a Councillor I will always do as our communities’ request, however funds spent on State infrastructure means that there is less for our own responsibilities at budget time. While I am on news items, yes the RV stop got the green light, and thanks go to the Combined Car Club and the Chamber of Commerce for their support. It has been a long haul as part of endeavours to enable opportunity to improve the local economy, and I am mindful that for every initiative to address our unemployment and underemployment statistics, there are impacts that as we go along we need to acknowledge and be prepared to

by Cr Sandy Bolton address. I recently hosted a roundtable on the subject of our higher than SEQ Regional and State averages with unemployment, and I believe it is time to fully comprehend that when our residents are suffering financially, the impact socially and environmentally is highly negative. So please, for those reading this that believe any initiative that brings job opportunities for our locals will impact negatively in terms of lifestyle, I ask that you consider the current negative impacts that you may not be aware of including unacceptable homeless numbers, male and female depression, and lifestyle choices including drug addiction and alcoholism that put an enormous strain on our social fabric, medical services and community support. I know that this subject seems to be ‘taboo’, however if we are to achieve your vision of a sustainable community, the reality is that every single resident has the power to make a difference – through purchase choices (local and Australian), support, and preparedness for compromise and some tolerance…think “we” instead of “I”. On a knowledge gathering front, the Council Roadshow has been out and about, with both the Kin Kin and Pomona nights providing a casual

and open forum for residents to discuss concerns and get to know staff and Councillors better. My fellow Councillors and I were given 5 minutes to update on a wide range of subjects in which to assist communities make better decisions, and to understand processes which at times can be very frustrating! The discussions were broad, and helped Council to identify areas in which there needs to be better dispersal of/access to information, improvements in processes, and challenges that are faced by residents through issues that they thought Council was aware of and weren’t! So please, if you have a concern, pick up the phone or email Council staff, or myself or fellow Councillors as that is what we are here for! And for those that ask why Cooroy did not host one – for the initial ones it was decided to trial four spread evenly between the Shire to assess where there was support for, and for ‘Cooroyites’ that did not attend the Pomona session, next year we hope to be there with you. To finish, keep your fingers crossed for the Budget, and I look forward through our efforts to seeing job creation opportunities being capitalised on, and some improved employment and social statistics next year.

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

WARNING, Random Roadside Drug Testing is coming to Cooroy and surrounding areas and expect to be caught if you are using illegal drugs and driving a motor vehicle. Driving under the influence of drugs is dangerous and affects a driver’s ability to drive and increases the risk of causing a serious or fatal traffic accident. In the past the ability of police to detect drug drivers has been hampered due to no roadside test kit being available with the only means of detecting the presence of drugs in a drivers system being to take the driver to a hospital and taking blood which was often a very labour intensive and time consuming exercise. Just like Random Breath Testing (RBT) for alcohol police now have the power to intercept a vehicle for a random roadside saliva test to detect the presence of illegal drugs. The drugs tested for are the drugs Methylamphetamine, (Speed) MDMA (Ecstasy) and Cannabis. Randomly selected drivers who are intercepted by police will be given a saliva test which is conducted by a very non evasive mouth swab which will take between 3 and 5 minutes to return a result. If the initial test is positive a second test will be completed and if that is also positive a further sample of saliva is then taken for analysis at a laboratory. Drugs such as prescription drugs will not be tested for however if you are adversely affected by any prescription drugs to the extent that it is affecting your driving police will still have the power as they always have to take you to a Hospital and require you to provide a blood sample to a Doctor or Nurse. Remember that the offence of Drug Driving is committed simply by the presence of one of the three drugs in the person’s saliva. This has huge ramifications for drug users as

police will now be able to randomly intercept motor vehicles and charge drivers with drug driving offences resulting in a court appearance, fine and the loss of license. Local police will be working with the State Road Policing Command and together we will be targeting drug drivers with the end result being that we will be making our roads a safer place to drive. Fair warning is given to any person using illegal drugs that you either give up the drugs or give up driving as the two do not mix and the ability to drive around Cooroy and surrounding areas avoiding detecting is decreasing all the time. Don’t be fooled into switching your drug of choice to one that we do not test for as police will still have the power to require blood sam-

ples where other drugs are suspected and indicia is present to suggest same. Also, can I remind people of the launching of our new initiative called “turning the screws on Crime” which will be coordinated by our “Volunteer in Policing” member, Anne Winning. This initiative will be conducted on Saturday the 18th July, 2015 from 9am to 11am in the car parking area in Elm st, Cooroy outside the Cooroy State School. Members of the Cooroy Police, Rotary and the Local SES will be on scene fitting cars with tamper proof one way screws which make the theft of registration plates extremely difficult. This service will be done free of charge and will make it more difficult for thieves to steal number plates and use them to commit other crimes around the area.

Australian Native Orchids AUSTRALIAN Native Orchids are plants that are often overlooked in most collections. They are often viewed as the poor relation compared to the overseas orchids. Most of the Australian are yellow or creams just like the wattles. These colours depict the harsh dry environment of Australia. Because they have evolved to handle these conditions they can be grown in our gardens without much attention. I have several varieties growing in the garden and they do not get any supplementary water or fertiliser and they thrive and flower every year. Only draw back is most of the flowers are short lived but they make up for it in volume of flowers. The flower attached to this article is Dendrobium speciosum, which used to grow in abundance in this area. The Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society conducts a spring show and many Australian natives can be viewed there along with 100’s of other exotic orchids. The show is held in the Memorial Hall in Cooroy on the 18th and 19th of September. There will be an abundance of orchids for sale, something for all buyers. To learn more about growing why not visit a club meeting. The club holds its meetings on the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah Hall starting at 1am. There is always a show and tell at the meetings. All visitors are welcome, we just ask for a $ 2 donation to cover afternoon tea. Contact John on 54832764 or visit the club’s website.

Sam’s not just horsing around LOCAL Real Estate Agent Sam Hargrave has not only been busy listing and selling homes in the Hinterland, she has been busy competing with her Quarter Horses. Sam says “Its been an amazing journey competing in Tamworth at the Quarter Horse Nationals, the NPHA in Sydney and the Queensland Quarter Horse State Championships held at QSEC in Caboolture. Only 2 years ago I was in the beginner classes at our local Western Shows at Nambour and since then I have had to relearn how to ride for the Western Pleasure Events. It is the total opposite to riding English Style as we ride with our legs and seat with a completely loose rein. The horses are trained to “spur stop” meaning when I squeeze with my legs the horse will stop or slow which ever is asked as they have lots of buttons e.g. Flying changes, side passes, and pivots to name only a few. Jim Rohan’s quote “Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better” has driven me to turn my dream into a reality and be able to compete at this level and none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of my husband, Phil and the help of my coaches and horse trainers Emma and Andrew Woinarski of Image performance Horses. I was so proud to ride my 4 year old ‘Deckin Hot’ (aka Sheldon Cooper) and even more proud when Emma rode him to ‘Reserve Champion’ at the National Pleasure Horse Association Event held at Sydney’s International Equestrian Centre. I also ride Emma’s Horse Ayisha Mystic Mynx (the living legend). Mysty is 22 years old and has taken me from absolute nervous beginner to All Breeds Amateur State Champion in the trail class and at this months State show we placed in every class coming 2nd in the trail, and 2nd in the Western Riding class, which are my absolute favourite pattern classes because Misty and I love doing flying changes. The Judge told me I would have come first but she put an extra flying change in and that was a 3 point penalty. If it wasn’t so much fun I’d probably have been a little sad.”

Lanhams celebrate 105 years in business

Tim Lanham with Cooroy Mitre 10 manager Blake Murray SUNSHINE Mitre 10 origins trace back to 1910 when the Lanhams commenced in Nambour when Walter Lanham began to supply building products to local builders. From humble beginnings they have grown into one of the largest independent hardware groups in Queensland. This business in Nambour in 1910 became a large steam-powered sawmill, which operated for a number of years in Price Street. With a decline in business during the depression years the business was taken over by his sons Edward and George. Edward maintained the sawmill operations alone during the 2nd World War, begin joined by his sons Wilfred and David in 1945. Soon after the war Lanhams saw the need to supply a complete building service in timber in the area of bearers and floor joists, frame timbers, roof timbers, hardwood strip flooring, chamfer

boards for cladding and also moulding timbers. At this time the sawmill operated as F.A. Lanham & Sons and it was relocated to its present Nambour location in Court Road. When Edward retired Wilfred and David continued to expand its operations, adding extra parts to the business. Eventually David was joined by his son David and they ran Lanhams together after Wilfred retired in 1977. In 1991 the business expanded and a new hardware showroom, warehouse and office facility were built and it is still successfully operating from the same location to this very day. 2004 saw Lanhams venture into new territory with the acquisition of their firs store in Cooroy. 2008 saw a merger occur between the Lanhams and Melco companies. The establishment of Sunshine Hardware Pty Ltd (Sunshine Mitre 10) began here with a total of 6 outlets including Nambour, Cooroy, Kunda Park, Noosaville and two stores in Gympie. “Sunshine Mitre 10 is proud to play a significant part in supporting each of our local communities in which we operate,” said Tim Lanham. SANDY Bolton and Noosa Council are asking people to come up with ideas for an ‘entry statement’ as people come off the highway into Cooroy - Heart of Noosa Country - They want ‘BIG’ . Huge saw blades from our timber history? Whatever it is … must be big! May be out in someone’s paddock or stored in someone’s shed? If you have an idea contact Sandy Bolton at Noosa Council on 5329 6500.

GET ready to save on your grocery bills because with the launch of Queensland’s IGA Price Match we’ll be able to purchase hundreds of everyday grocery items at reduced prices. The Price Match Promise initiative will see independent retailers, under the IGA banner, match hundreds of everyday items such as breakfast cereals, coffee and pasta to Australia’s major supermarket chains. With IGA and IGA SUPA stores participating in Queensland, this represents significant savings for locals. IGA Pomona and SUPA IGA Cooroy Store Owner, Peter Zipf said Price Match enables Hinterland customers to shop locally without having to pay more - we check, we match, you win. “Every week, we compare and match 100s of everyday products, so you won’t pay more to shop at your local SUPA IGA or IGA. The prices are matched weekly to the big supermarkets everyday shelf price.

“Price Match will come as welcome news to Hinterland residents who want to support their independent grocers but have previously found it more expensive to do so. Not only does this initiative provide savings to shoppers’ hip pockets but when you shop independent you also support your local community. “The money Hinterland customers spend at their local IGA filters down into the community through IGA Community Chest, a program that raises funds to support local community organisations or charities,” Peter said. Two cents from every sale of an IGA Signature product is donated to IGA Community Chest. To date, over $75 million has been raised. “It really is a win-win situation because by shopping local at an IGA store, customers are also helping us in our commitment to keep supporting and building independent Australian brands and suppliers,” Peter said.

news Dawn Christine Kelly (nee Secker) March 21, 1947 – June 25, 2015

COOROY RAG BORN with a twin sister who unfortunately died at birth, Dawn had a health issue and struggled in the first days of her life, hence the love dimples on her upper legs. When asked by the grandchildren, “Grandma what are those marks on your legs”, she would then quickly explain. Dawn had an elder brother Edward (Eddy), a sister Robyn and a younger brother Loxley. Dawn grew up in Ashburton, Melbourne, Victoria. She went to public state primary school and then went on to a high school some distance from her home. A story that was told many times by Dawn to one and all was that as she rode her bike past a Migrant Hostel coming home from school one day (late once again) speeding down the hill as the Migrant children were crossing the road to go to the mess hut, she clean bowled a little 8/9 year old kid, throwing their dinner plates and cutlery everywhere and sped off to never

pass by the hostel again. Dawn’s love of dogs in particular the Boxer breed, was her great passion showing the bitch named Moth for her parents and going on to make the dog an Australian Champion and herself a great dog handler. Dawn won the Champion Junior Handler at the Royal Melbourne Show against a large number entrants from all round Australia. The dog world was where Ray first met Dawn. It was not a good start to a relationship as Ray thought Dawn was beautiful, but a bit upper class. How wrong was he? Ray was learning to be a Dog Judge and Dawn showed some dogs under him. Of course he placed her dogs first in the best open bitch category where one went on to win best dog in show. That same dog went on to be Australian champion and won many best in show awards, so it was the dog that was judged not the handler. Some months went by and Ray joined Dawn

and her girlfriend at a town hall dance and finished taking Dawn home. They parked out the front, next thing lights came on and a little fellow came screaming out saying Dawn was only 16. Ray quickly departed, he was only 20. Some months later after meeting with Dawn’s parents the friendship blossomed. After a number years they were married and spent the

attendants. They bought a passionfruit farm at Tinbeerwah working that for about four years then ran the Traders Hut, Servo and Caravan Park in Hastings Street Noosa where the Sheraton is now. They also opened a sports store and Bike shop in Cooroy. Dawn, together with three other people, lobbied the government to start a Special Ed unit at the Noosa District High School and also volunteered helping students with reading and other life skills. Dawn was a well-known face in the food canteen at the Cooroy Pony Club. next 50 plus years Dawn was a major together. worked alongside Ray and other Lions members. Raising funds for our community, Dawn worked collecting money for cancer around the Cooroy and Pomona areas. It is sad that the big C claimed her life in a very short time. Dawn worked in the Cooroy post office for many years and made many friends for her caring attitude towards getting the mail through. Dawn retired after many years and loved caravanning, with many trips around parts of Australia with Ray and her dogs. They did a number of overseas trips including Canada, Europe, New Zealand and most recently the Gallipoli Anniversary. Later in retirement Dawn took up pottery and loved every minute of making platters, jars, pots, etc. She loved her rose garden and her other gardens with fruit trees and other tree plantings, but we should never forget the love for her animals. Dawn was a very proud person when all of her children married

born and bred Queenslanders, a state she loved. She made the grandchildren smile with her dress ups such as fairy queens, wicked witches and mermaids at their parties. Dawn was also very proud of her children and grandchildren with their achievements in sport, creative arts and academic subjects. Dawn was a very dedicated mother, grandmother and wife and loved by everyone that she came in contact with due to her easy going nature and sincere attitude towards everyone. Dawn was well known for her travel poetry. Whenever on a trip Dawn would write a piece of poetry about what happened on the trip. Dawn, our darling mum, grandma, wife, sister, sister in law, aunty and friend. We will never forget you and we will remember, that on some nights a star will shine over Tinbeerwah, which will be you; our shining star forever. Rest in peace, our love that you justly deserve.

Festival celebrates our environment THE rain disappeared and the sun came through for a day of beautiful weather at this year’s Noosa Festival of Water on Sunday 28th June at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre. An estimated 2000 people enjoyed a day of entertainment and education about the Lake and the special environment we live in. Thanks to our major sponsors, Noosa Council and Seqwater for enabling the event to go ahead. Avery special thanks also to the army of volunteers who contribute their time to stage the event

every year. Thanks also to Hooked on Angling and Outdoors at Tewantin, for staging a very successful Catch and Release Bass Fishing Competition, which attracted 32 entries including a number of junior anglers. Kim’s work displayed at Gallery of Modern Art KIM Guthrie graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1981. He’s lived in Cooroy with his partner, painter Lisa Adams, for 30 years. He works wherever life takes him (predominately South-East Queensland), his camera is with him wherever he goes. That includes working on his property, going into town to check the mail or further afield to interstate or overseas. He works teaching art to people with disabilities and has done so for many years but also makes Public artworks as part of his practice. The most recognisable and recent of these being FLOW/ SPLASH at the Maroochydore Bus Station in Horton Pde. Maroochydore. Photography is his favoured and most passionately and prolifically pursued medium. There are a number of themes, which are central within the greater body of Guthrie’s work. The predominant subject matter is quintessentially Australian and it reveals the ways in which Australian myths are deeply ingrained and yet constantly changing, signifying the cultural diversity that we, as a country, continue to experience. The deeply ingrained, sardonic, Australian sense of humour is evident throughout many of the images, but there is also a sombre aspect to some images, which point towards a darker side. He says: “It’s my job to report back to the general population on the cultural landscape as I see it”. As much of his subject matter deals with the Australian national character and Australian landscapes etc., for the audience, there will be a strong

Kim Guthrie - self portrait recognition-factor at work. The work transcends mere documentary photography and presents the ‘everyday’ within a high-art context. My Vanishing Act is the title of a major body of work included as part of GOMA:Q an overview of contemporary Queensland Arts practice. From July 11 - October 11 at QAG/GOMA, South Brisbane Guthrie has spent most of his career to date being overlooked and ignored because the world admires popular culture and his worldview is an un-popular culture – things the general population don’t usually aspire to or are used to rejecting, because of social bias. “After a lifetime immersed in the language of visual art, I celebrate the uncelebrated as culturally significant,” says Guthrie. Matt Lee some may know as the judge on the hit TV series ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ others may know him as

‘Bert’ from the current Australian cast of Mary Poppins which is about to tour UK and surrounds. Marko Panzic was a con-

testant on the first series of the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and returned every season after as a choreographer as well as choreographing film clips like Ricki Lee’s ‘Do it Like That’, just to name a few of their memorable achievements. The students learnt a different dance from both of them and it was insane, the music was loud, the atmosphere was electric and the sweat was pouring. pomona Can Hubertien pull off a win for her birthday

COOROY RAG

Competitor Profile: Hubertien Wichers

WHEN you have a milestone birthday to celebrate, what springs to mind? Lunch at a fancy restaurant? A big party with family and friends? A find-yourself trip to Paris? For Hubertien Wichers, her milestone birthday in 2015 will find her racing to the top of Mt Cooroora and back in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Hubertien has won the Women’s Division of this notoriously difficult and dangerous event five times, and she loves the atmosphere, the adrenaline, and the toughness of the race. On her first attempt, with precisely no experience in mountain running, she finished in an impressive 35 minutes and placed a creditable fifth. From there she was bitten by the running bug and there was no stopping her. Now Hubertien competes for the Ashgrove Rangers in the cross country season, and runs in the Australian and Queensland Mountain Running Championships. And because too much running is not enough, Hubertien also organises and races in the Mount Glorious Race, the Pinnacles Race and the Walk about Creek Race. These are all off-road races on the trails of Queensland National Parks, held

The Great Tucker Cooking Program OPTIONS 4 U Op Shop, (an outlet of the Living Hope Church), together with the Pomona & District Community House have recently collaborated with the dietetics students from the University of the Sunshine Coast to develop the very first Great Tucker Cooking Program at the Pomona Community House , Lawson Shed. The program, started with the assistance of a grant from Noosa Council, is a FREE 5-week cooking class designed to help people learn how to cook healthy and quick food on a budget. The program will teach participants how to buy, cook and store healthy and tasty food. Better yet, the program will also show participants how to manage their grocery budget, all while engaging with other community members in a friendly environment. With the first 5-week program, starting on the 13th August, project coordinator, Jeanette dal Santo from Options 4 U, says that people should book in early. “This is such a great program,” said Jeanette, “We have the nutrition, the fabulous menus and the budgeting all covered. You don’t want to miss out on these great classes.” There are two more programs already scheduled starting on October 1st and on November 19th. If you have small children and would like to participate please register your interest as soon as possible as organisers are looking at providing child care support for the second or third series. If you are interested in learning more about The Great Tucker Cooking Program, or know of someone who is, please contact the Pomona & District Community House on 5485 2427.

by the Trail Running Association of Queensland. She has also competed in the World Mountain Running Championships which, she notes, “involves quite a lot of hills and mileage”. Hubertien has come a long way from that first day, tackling Mt Cooroora as an inexperienced runner with nothing but guts and determination. She finds the race to be different every year, although she laughs “I think the mountain is getting the upper hand! But I love getting up there, soaking in the views at the top and hearing the wind blow.” The funds raised by the King of the Mountain Festival go to charity, and Hubertien appreciates all the work done by the Lions for community and charity groups. She says “I would not have a life that is not full of stuff to do, and which contributes to the community. Life is about making a difference and making the world a better place, and I think I live by that.” On her birthday, Hubertien will be in the middle of the action, enjoying the thrill of being “hunted” by the rest of the pack, the test of her agility and strength, and the cheers of the crowd urging on competitors as they descend from the mountain and sprint for the finishing line. “It is one very exciting race!” she enthuses. We all wish Hubertien a happy 50th birthday for Sunday 26 July, and the entire crowd at the King of the Mountain Festival will be cheering her on.

pomona Ninderry artist on show at Kandanga Country Club, Mary Valley ANIMALS come into focus at Kandanga Country Club when Ninderry artist Fiona Groom opens her solo exhibition “Mixed Bag”. It will be on show at the Kandanga art space until August 14. “For me animal life is the driving force behind my art; ‘Mixed Bag’ is an exhibition highlighting the diversity of the animal kingdom, thus my idea being that each painting tells its own story,” Ms Groom said. “The intention is to capture my subject’s character and expression, incorporating their humour, their majesty and wonder. I hope my work gives the viewer a sense of marvel and appreciation for animal life, something I feel every time I put brush to canvas.” Ms Groom was always going to be an artist, but says the opportunity to paint did not present itself until the early 2000s when she enrolled in a local Tafe course. In 2002 she completed a Certificate II Visual Arts and following that, the Diploma of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) in 2004, at Cooloola Sunshine Institute of Tafe. She plans to graduate with a Fine Arts degree from Curtin University this year. Her education pairs well with her grassroots involvement in the art industry, where she has co-coordinated local art shows and displayed her paintings in a variety of exhibitions and competitions throughout Queensland, interstate and most recently, at an exhibition in Florence, Italy. Ms Groom was gallery curator at Yandina Historic House for eight years, which gave

her the opportunity to work with other artists, organise and present artwork and participate in a variety of community events. She has also coordinated children’s art workshops and projects, which she says help her gain a better understanding of art making and give her the direction and inspiration that she needs. “My motivation to paint comes from a need to convey what I see through the camera lens,” Ms Groom said. “Animal life and the natural world provide me with an unending source of ideas for my art and from this a chance to experiment and evolve as an artist.” The Kandanga art space at the bowls club is curated by Meaghan Shelton, a committee member with Mary Valley Artslink. NICHOLAS, owner of the Jamaica Blue Café at Cooroy, creamed his competition at the Grand Final of the second annual Jamaica Blue Franchisee Barista Championships, held last week (25 June) at the new FOODCO Centre of Retail Excellence in Sydney. One of three grand finalists who knocked-out competitors from more than 40 Jamaica Blue cafés across Australia to make it to the final round of the competition, Nicholas successfully put to use his professional coffee-making experience and ultimately proved his ability to prepare and serve 12 cups of premium-quality coffee within just 15 minutes before an ex-

pert judging panel. Declared the 2015 Jamaica Blue Franchisee Barista Champion, Nicholas impressed the judges with exceptional customer service, technical skills and visual presentation of his coffees. Nicholas blew the judges away with his engaging performance and excellent latte art skills – his cappuccino being a knock out. “I was so surprised when they called my name! “I have just started out on my coffee journey and my goal coming into this competition was to have the best coffee on the Sunshine Coast, so this is just such a great feeling,” said Nicholas.

real estate Large lots and idyllic country lifestyle drives home buyers to Cooroy

COOROY RAG

THE availability of quality large lots within close proximity to Cooroy’s main street is driving significant enquiry and sales at the hinterland master planned community of Greenwood Grove. Greenwood Grove residents enjoy country living in the historic town of Cooroy with the added bonus of Noosa’s restaurants, cafes, cultural precincts and stunning beaches just 25 minutes away. Greenwood Grove spokesperson Rob Midgley has lived in Cooroy for the best past of 30 years and has seen first hand how people are attracted to the laid back community on offer. “Times have changed but Cooroy seems to have maintained that unique country feel that so many people are looking for nowadays. It’s a real community with its own character and that is what sets the town apart. “In particular the people, the culture and easy access to abundant community facilities including schools, sports clubs, medical facilities, cultural centres and community groups is what buyers are recognising when they purchase at Greenwood Grove. “Cooroy’s main street is just five minutes walk from Greenwood Grove so it’s a leisurely stroll to access local conveniences including the IGA

supermarket and other retail shops, the post office, pub, gallery and other local attractions. Noosa Heads is just 25 minutes down the road and we also have direct access to the Brisbane train line if you need to get to the city,” he said. Large fully serviced residential lots are also very scarce throughout the Noosa and Hinterland region, however at Greenwood Grove the average lot size is 763m2 with the smallest commencing at 622m2. “We really want to give buyers a true country feel and large lots provide the opportunity to build a spacious home and still have room for a pool, shed or outdoor entertainment area. “We currently have 23 lots for sale in the Stage 4 release with ten of those lots sold to local buyers. All of the lots within this release face north and have stunning views over Cooroy Creek and across to Mt Cooroy. “With prices commencing at just $222,500 we are expecting demand to remain strong so we encourage people to call us on 5447 7198 to arrange an inspection,” Mr Midgley said. For more information visit www.greenwoodgrove.com.au or call 5447 7198.

Housing supply critical in hinterland market

by Murray Brown - Hinternoosa LOOKING back the last quarter of 2014/15 saw our Hinternoosa team have sell one property every 2 days. Prices ranged from $200,000 to over $2 million with an average sale price of $650,000. Consequently the supply of Cooroy, Doonan, Eumundi and Pomona properties in the $400-$800,000 price sector is the lowest we’ve experienced in 25 years. In this hinterland market the average time on market for Cooroy homes is 4 weeks. The lack of new building commencements over the past years and the increase in the volume of sales in the past 18 months has resulted in an acute shortage of listings in the entry level market. There’s also been a substantial increase in demand over the last 4 months so well priced & presented offerings in the $400,000 - $800,000 price sector are being sold in weeks rather than months, often resulting in multi offer negotiations. Whilst the market is still in a recovery phase post GFC and buyers are still seeking value for money, demand in our entry market was more than robust, so we are activly seeking listings to meet this demand. According to industry commentators, SE Queensland, the Noosa hinterland is a prime market within that region, is the top pick of anywhere to buy in Australasia at the moment. Sydney is close to the top of its cycle and has experienced a 40 per cent growth in the last few years and they

www.cooroyrag.com.au

suggest, has almost topped out. You can live a millionaire’s lifestyle in our region without being a multi-millionaire. I see the noosa hinterland golden triangle being from Noosaville out to Belli, (west of Eumundi) up to Ridgewood (west of Cooroy) and down to Tewantin. You’d be hard pressed to find anywhere better to invest in lifestyle property than the region contained within this area within a 15km radius of Cooroy Mountain over the next 3-5 years for capital growth. Looking forward to the first quarter 2015/16 you can still buy a quality rural home in this region for $700,000 - $800,000 which is the same as people are paying to buy a one-bedroom unit in Sydney. People are lining up to pay those prices in Sydney, however you can get a 300m2 home on acreage in the Noosa hinterland, as well as get some change. At our recent Chamber of Commerce AGM in Cooroy business people were more confident than ever, the economy is going well even though unemployment is up and higher than we’d like to see, but most people see a positive outlook for 2015/16. Our recent buyers recommend the lifestyle, every day they tell me they love it, and really enjoy the people they meet. Buyers suggest once you have your home tucked away, social connections and a feeling of belonging to a community are critical. “We’re all lucky in Australia to live in the best part of the planet and in our Noosa hinterland it’s even better, with the climate perfect 364 days of the year” Cooroy Rag, July 8, 2015 - Page 23

health What is Reflexology REFLEXOLOGY is the application of appropriate pressure to specific points and areas on the feet. These areas and reflex points correspond to different body organs and body systems, applying pressure to these points has a beneficial effect on the organs and the person’s general health. For example, reflexology holds that a specific spot in the arch of the foot corresponds to the bladder point. When a reflexology practitioner uses their thumbs or fingers to apply appropriate pressure to this area, it affects bladder functioning. Although reflexology is not used to diagnose or cure health disorders, millions of people around the world use it to complement other treatments when addressing conditions like anxiety, asthma, cancer treatment, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, headaches, kidney function, PMS, and sinusitis. Reflexology is growing increasingly popular across the world as both a complement to other treatments and as a preventive measure. But above all else Reflexology is the perfect way to relax, take some time out for you and your feet will feel amazing! If you would like to have a Reflexology Treatment or learn more about the treatment, please contact the the Maple Street Acupuncture clinic on 5442 5526.

Do you lack motivation to exercise? WORKOUT with a friend at E Fitness! We all know that it can be difficult staying motivated to exercise by yourself, especially during the winter months. The cooler mornings are much nicer snuggled up under the blankets, the cooler nights are preferred staying put in front of a cosy fire and those glasses of water consumed in the summer months are likely to be replaced with a hot chocolate or two. Erin Yarwood from E Fitness in Cooroy suggests working out with a good mate is the perfect way to stay keen and fit during winter! And she has some amazing deals to get you inspired too! Until July 31st, Erin is offering an awesome “two for the price of one” Personal Training package! So find a friend who is also keen to keep

fit and split the cost! Note: Buy a 5 or 10 PT package and it gets even cheaper! You’d prefer to do a group fitness class instead? Erin has over 14 classes on her timetable each week and is also offering 10 session fitness class pass cards for best buddies to share (and you each get an extra class for free!) So what are you waiting for?? Grab your bestie and get moving!! You must get in quick, as this deal is for July only. Please mention this ad to claim the offer. Guaranteed weight loss! MANY patients trying weight loss diets find that their results are either disappointing or short lived, or both. This is often because many ‘fad diets’ are poorly designed, nutritionally deficient and not at all holistic. Fat loss requires dietary changes to be applied, but if underlying driving factors are not addressed, a patient’s weight loss goals may remain unattainable. Make A Difference Health & Fitness practice holistic medicine and are best placed to help you make lasting changes to your body composition. We can help you make the dietary and lifestyle changes you need to lose the weight, as well as helping address the underlying driving factors that may be contributing to their weight gain and/or impeding your weight loss. The following case demonstrates the power of holistic approaches to weight loss. Presenting Case Female patient, 33 years of age, presented for weight loss. Patient had tried other weight loss diets in the past, with no lasting success. On investigation we found the patient had PMS and menstrual symptoms as well as experiencing significant stress and decreased energy levels rated at only 6 to 7/10. We also suspected that mild insulin resistance was also impeding weight loss. Shake Off Those Excess Kilos! Over the six-week treatment period, the patient experienced significant improvement in energy – going from an average energy level of 6 to 7/10 to 9 to 10/10. She lost 4 kgs, recorded a drop of over six years in biological age and

noticed significant changes to her stress levels since beginning treatment. The patient was monitored weekly using Body Composition Analysis to track body composition and cellular health changes. Addressing Contributing Factors Helps Fight the Fat Addressing issues such as hormonal imbalances, stress, insulin resistance, toxicity and inflammation is extremely important, as these can all contribute to weight gain and/or slow weight loss. Prolonged or severe stress will also contribute to weight gain, as increased cortisol increases appetite and contributes to the development of insulin resistance. Another contributing factor involved in insulin resistance is inflammation; finally, exogenous toxins and endotoxins, can also drive inflammation, insulin resistance and visceral adiposity. The Best Person to Help Short-term, symptomatic solutions are often offered to patients looking to lose weight. These do not help to address underlying drivers to disease and cannot, therefore, give long lasting results. We at Make a Difference Health and Fitness are in a perfect position to help you when it comes to weight loss, as we have the best tools available, ensuring you no longer have to fight a losing battle! We are so confident that you will lose weight with us that we are prepared to offer a guarantee on our services. Limited spaces so please ring Maria or Lee to see if you qualify and to find out more details. Call 5442 6179, 0407 597 748 or visit www.madhf.com.au

Cervical Postural Syndrom Do I have It? What can I do about it? THE cervical spine is the upper part of the spine from the head to the shoulders. Cervical Postural Syndrome refers to issues resulting from an increased curvature of the upper back, rounding of the shoulders, and a poking of the chin which often increases the normal curvature of the cervical spine. Cervical Postural Syndrome is characterised by neck pain, stiffness, muscle aching and occasionally headaches. Leaving this untreated often leads to chronic pain issues, arthritis, pain in the jaw and headaches. Unfortunately this condition is being seen more and more in the clinic as a lot of people spend the majority of their time sitting in front of computers or using smart phones or tablets. Physiotherapy treatment addresses cervical postural syndrome in the following ways: • Soft tissue releases to improve muscle flexibility and reduce soreness • Spinal mobilisation to reduce stiffness in the spine • Biomechanical and postural assessment to address causes of poor cervical spine posture

Page 26 - Cooroy Rag, July 8, 2015

• Stretching and strengthening exercises to address muscle imbalances • Ergonomic assessment of your workplace/workstation set up • Clinical Pilates to improve posture, strength and core muscle awareness • Recommendation of an appropriate pillow to reduce ongoing strain on the neck at night If you are suffering with neck or upper back pain, don’t delay in getting some treatment to receive the discomfort and prevent recurrences. Remember, treating the symptoms is not enough. A thorough assessment and management of the cause of the problem is necessary to help prevent recurrence. The experienced team at Hinteractive Physio can assist you with all of your physiotherapy needs, as well as stocking appropriate pillows and providing clinical pilates for complete management of your symptoms. You can contact Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

Knitted poppies for fallen Gallipoli diggers DESPITE being robbed in Rome, cancelled flights due to airport fires, over the top security in Egypt and a ship full of coughing passengers, Eerwah Vale’s David and Eileen Walder returned safely and with many wonderful memories from their 100th anniversary of Gallipoli journey. The intrepid travellers also took 1000 poppies knitted and crocheted by Eileen and dozens of wonderful volunteers from the Sunshine Coast and as far as Chinchilla. However following requests from other passengers, Eileen conducted daily classes on board the MSC Orchestra, resulting in over 3000 poppies which were placed on the graves of Anzacs and memorials at all the cemeteries on the Gallipoli Peninsula. All passengers on the Gallipoli 2015 Cruise were given a designated digger to research and find his grave. Eileen was determined that no grave would be without and was overwhelmed by the response from passengers to get involved. “I expected about a dozen to turn up on the first day but we had 149, including several young servicemen using their leave to pay homage to previous Diggers. It was wonderful to teach SAS boys to knit and crochet,” Eileen said. “Some were going on to the Western Front after we arrived in Rome and wanted to take poppies or continue knitting on that bus journey. We had to keep knitting to try to reach my new target of 3000.” Every day at sea, the classes continues with children, middle aged men and more ladies joining in. “I had only taken a dozen balls of wool and six pairs of knitting needles with me but it was like the miracle of loaves and fishes. Some passengers had brought their own after contacting me before we sailed. The company sent for more supplies which arrived in Cairo and somehow by making poppy sized balls from big ones so everyone could make one and people bringing me their left overs, we managed to keep going every day, “Eileen said. The day night before arriving at Gallipoli the target was exceeded. Passengers queued the length of the ship to collect their poppies spent two days, touring the battlefields placing poppies on every

grave and memorial. Many donated to Legacy to show their appreciation for the mammoth effort. Eileen was interviewed by Turkish and Australian television. “They just picked me out not knowing about the poppies so I was able to tell them about the wonderful contribution made by all those volunteers both before we sailed and on board. “I also placed some at the Turkish cemetery where one passenger was asked by a group of Turkish ladies about the poppies. They asked if they might have one and also the knitting pattern so that they too could make some for their fallen,” Eileen said. “Wherever we went in Turkey we were treated with such warmth and genuine emotion about the poppies we wore.” The ship docked in Anzac Cove on 25 April, close to the HMAS Anzac. Passengers watched the Dawn Service on a giant screen on deck followed by their own service which featured a moving Hakka by New Zealand passengers. “To see our sea of red poppies televised on the graves, especially during the Lone Pine service, brought tears to all our eyes,” Eileen said. “I had placed extra ones at the graves of all those poor boys between 16 and 21 years who had lost their lives before they had begun.” Other vivid memories of Gallipoli are of the incredible terrain which clearly proved the Anzacs didn’t have a chance. At times the trenches were only a few metres apart with the Turks able to look down into the Anzac’s eyes. One memorial statue depicts a true incident when a Turkish soldier carried a wounded Aussie safely back to the Aussie trenches, then returned to his own. “There was so much heroism during every battle but the loss of thousands of lives – was it worth it? We must ensure we never forget, Eileen said.” The cruise included visiting the site of the HMAS Sydney’s sinking, Colombo, Luxor, Cairo, Suez Canal, Istanbul, Troy, Ephesus, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Palermo, Naples, Herculaneum before arriving in Rome. “And that’s when our troubles began!” Eileen said. “But that is for another tale.”

Sam Cameron-Hands to represent Australia at World Championships

COOROY AUTO WRECKERS & ENGINE CENTRE

BIG news for the Impact Boxing Academy just in - Sam Cameron-Hands has been selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Men’s Boxing Championships in Russia! Sam is the current Australian 57kg Champion and is now one of only seven boxers in the country that has been selected. Sam has already been involved in a 10 day preparation camp held at the AIS recently where he continued to impress the Australian head coaches. The World Championships are to be held in the first week of September. All going well Cooroy will have its first boxing World Champion! “To be selected for this event is a massive feather in Sam’s cap. There are 7 boxers in 7 different weight categories that have been selected out of the thousands of boxers that compete Australia wide. We have had this goal in our sights for the last couple of years now so to actually reach it is a dream come true for Sam. As his coach I could not be prouder of him, for the last 5 years he has trained with a focus that you just do not see every day. I have no doubt that he will go on to be the World Junior Champion,” Coach Mark Evans said. We are currently seeking sponsorship for Sam as he prepares to compete in Russia. Obviously there are some large costs to overcome between now and September. If any local businesses would like to help out no matter how big or small it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact Mark on 0403264048 or email mark@impactboxingacademy.com

Byron Mckeown

THE Impact crew travelled to Cairns last month with 4 fighters to compete and they certainly made an Impact on the North Queenslanders. Four fights with four wins was the result for the team. First up for the Impact crew was young gun Coen Allman. Coen’s opponent was Bryce Arroita from Townsville. Coen boxed superbly to secure the win by way of a unanimous decision. Next up was Byron Mckeown. Byron’s opponent was local boy and the current Qld 44kg State title holder Zac Mulholand. Zac came out blazing applying plenty of pressure on Byron from the opening bell. Byron used his slick footwork and counter punching skills to slow Zac down. Rounds two and three saw Byron take control of the bout and was awarded the win via a unanimous decision. Alec Aird-Cardiff was the next Impact fighter to enter the ring. Alec was having his first comeback fight after taking a year of to concentrate on playing cricket. What a comeback it was winning against the tough and durable Tiki Tutari from Longreach with a dominate performance. The main junior bout of the evening was “Slamin Sam” Cameron-Hands vs Townsville’s big hitting Connor Wilcox. Round one saw both boys moving around the ring trying to work each other out with short exchanges and plenty of caution being displayed. Round two saw Sammy put his foot down and pick up the pace with some superb combinations being landed as he kept Connor on the back foot. Third round it was on. Both boys trying to stamp their authority on the other. Sam changes gears again and finished the round with Connor on the ropes and in all sorts of trouble to be awarded the victory. “It’s always hard fighting local fighters in their own back yard in front of their own crowd. Our boys stepped up to the plate to dominate in their bouts and were seemingly unaffected by the local crowd cheering on their opponents. I am proud as always of these lads as they continue to impress not only me but everyone who sees them compete. They will definitely be leaving Cairns with a heap of new fans,” coach Mark Evans said.

A BIG shout out to Phil Drescher who’s playing in the Australian Over 60s cricket team touring the UK. The team is playing 18 games in 28 days - 14 County games, three 1 Day Internationals and 1 test including Wales (which we won). The Aussies are killing it! After winning the first 6 matches of the UK tour (including winning the first test against Wales), they were beaten by the Oxfordshire Over 60s team in a very close match but bounced back with a strong win against Cambridgeshire. Check out the Cricket Australia website for more details.
