Cooroy to Vegas LOCAL residents and former Noosa District State High School graduates, Jeanenne McEwan and Jesse Gale, have qualified to represent Australia at the 2014 World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas. Over two thousand of the world’s best dancers will come together in Las Vegas this August, with Crews and Megacrews from 45 countries competing to capture the world title, and international bragging rights. Jesse, who is one of seven members of the dance crew Checkmate, has been dancing since he was four years old. Growing up in the small Central Queensland coastal town of Agnes Water, Jesse became a competent jazz and break dancer, performing in numerous eisteddfods and concerts. After moving to Cooroy to undertake his secondary education at Noosa District, Jesse joined Fierce Studios in Noosa, where he did jazz, ballet and hip hop. He developed a keen interest in hip hop, prompting a move to Sole Studios in Nambour, the Sunshine Coast’s only exclusive hip hop dance school.

Talent shines during Australian Business Week NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) has now successfully hosted Australian Business Week for the 11th straight year and the school’s appetite for the program hasn’t waned. Australian Business Week (ABW) offers students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. In an exciting week-long intensive program, students experienced what it’s like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. This year, students ran a hotel simulation business and with the help of a business and teacher mentor discovered the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century. Throughout the week, students performed tasks in teams ranging from forming a company, assigning roles and responsibilities in the company and reviewing key business areas. They had to make decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This year’s 16 teams also developed

a marketing strategy and mounted a trade display complete with promotional material and produced a 30 second commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team prepared a written company report explaining decisions made, the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and then delivered an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It made for a full week but left each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. This year, the team Hotel named Serenity Beach were crowned Grand Champions. The winning team’s appointed CEO, Alysha Haack said the ABW experience had not only benefited the Serenity team but all 16 teams that took part. Continued on Page 3

For years Australia has been envied, for its economic stability’, Coupled with its culture, and its political ability, Now our politicians are more interested in their own careers, Rather than the nation’s interests, and the important future years. They are losing credibility, they don’t know where they are, The country’s political atmosphere is bordering on bizarre For the ordinary citizen, the voter, confusion must reign supreme, For climate change, the carbon tax, the emissions trading scheme. Clive Palmer’s telling the Prime Minister what he has to do, If he wants to get his legislation in the Senate through. That seems to smack of blackmail, in a funny kind of way, Causing the citizens disquiet, and justifiable dismay. Al Gore came out from America, to get into the act, Moses on the Mount, it seems, was all the performance lacked. The voters don’t know whether to love Clive or disbelieve him, Mr Abbott doesn’t know whether to love him or to leave him, If the PM and Clive wedded in political convenience, It would surely be a marriage of total expedience. There would be the future possibility, of course, Of a very public and politically bitter divorce. There’s a lot of work ahead, before the Government gets its way, Avoiding the budget getting into embarrassing disarray. Inquiries, Royal Commissions, Reports from all kinds of gurus, Not to mention the revelations of scandals, which fill the daily news. The Defence Force, the asylum seekers, child abuse, the Middle East, There’s no doubt the media, will have a wonderful feast.. When the government calls in an expert, I suspect their principal aim, Is to call in someone to help them share the blame!!!!

CHECKMATE will be competing in the Varsity Division (13-18 year olds) while Genetik, Jeanenne’s crew, will be competing in the Adult Division. Jeanenne hails from Mount Isa, and began to seriously engage with dance after moving to Cooroy, taking classes in jazz, hip hop and contemporary. Jesse invited her to attend Sole’s ‘bring-afriend’ day, and she became hooked on hip hop and the friendly atmosphere at Sole Studios, culminating in a suc-

most of us haven’t had business studies as a course. We’re especially thankful to our mentors, Cathy Eden and Andrew Kirkham who gave their time to guide us and advise us in various aspects of hotel and financial management.” Without the support of parents, students and

teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it’s become - but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Community Bank. Having just completed sponsor-

ing ABW for another year, Cooroy branch manager Geoff Edwards said the Community Bank will be proud to continue its association with the week long program again in 2015. “This is our seventh year as the major sponsor of ABW and the relationship gets stronger

as we become more involved in each facet of it. The mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas and creativity with their endless energies and talents. One of our Community Bank board directors, Fred Broomhall was also on hand to assist during the week of mentoring and we’re both delighted to add this to our financial assistance to the program. “This year ABW was a resounding success and a credit to its coordinator Alison Rexa and school Principal Chris Roff. I encourage any local business owner who hasn’t been involved in ABW to find out more about the program and get involved in 2015. Some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Mr. Edwards added.

Cooroy to Vegas cessful audition for a position in the competition crew, Checkmate, at the start of 2013. Checkmate, with both Jesse and Jeanenne as members, went on to have a very successful year, which included winning Rumble, in Brisbane, and picking up the silver medal at World Supremacy Battlegrounds in Sydney against 26 other crews from around Australia. As Jeanenne is now over 18, she has moved up into the adult category with Genetik, who,

along with Checkmate, won silver medals at the recent Australian Hip Hop Championships in Sydney, thus qualifying them for the Worlds. Sole’s Junior crew also qualified, making Sole the most successful hip hop dance school in Australia, quite an achievement for the Sunny Coast! Unfortunately, because of financial constraints, only Genetik and Checkmate will be attending the sixday event in Vegas. Nevertheless, the cost of taking two crews to

Vegas is substantial, and the Sole ‘family’ is in the midst of some intensive fundraising. Events so far have included garage sales, a trivia night and a ‘Road to Vegas’ concert. Crowdfunding, collecting finance from backers, the ‘crowd’, to fund an initiative, occurs on the Internet, and Sole are trying this option as well. ONE of the toughest mountain climb challenges in Australia will take place in Pomona, in the beautiful Noosa Hinterland On Sunday 27th July. Arrive at Pomona from any direction and the first thing you see before you get to the town is the impressive backdrop of Mount Cooroora rising to a peak of 439m. An ancient volcanic plug with rocky outcrops, covered in part by dense trees, the mountain looks formidable and inaccessible. It is then a surprise to find that there is wellworn track up to the top of the mountain, but

even more surprising is the fact that this track forms the route for the annual Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. The premier event of the Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, covers a distance of 4.2 km. Although the race starts gently from the centre of Pomona, on streets that wind their way out of town to the base of the mountain continuing over undulating bush track, it’s not long before the gruelling, steep climb starts. The track up the

mountain gradually becomes little more than a goat track and is almost vertical in parts. In some places the track is only wide enough for one or two runners making passing another competitor risky and precarious. Remarkably there have been few casualties over the years. The return down the mountain requires strength, agility, a good sense of balance, and undoubtedly an immunity to fear. This is not a race for everyone! The course, and indeed the race, has to be seen to be believed. The race record is an incredible

To East Timor with love once more

FOR the fifth straight year, Cooroy State School students are going to make life a lot easier for hundreds of youngsters in East Timor. Cooroy State School students recently assembled hundreds of educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu - a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 of primary school age. The area also caters for other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies. With the help of

Bendigo Bank and Rotary, Sao Miguel was identified six years ago as a community school with no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. Each parcel donated by the kids from Cooroy State School is a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student to the child opening it at the other end. What’s more impressive is that the 465 shoe boxes collected from Cooroy have now joined more than 1,000 others from Tewantin and Pa-

cific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 1,500 kids. “This is the fifth straight year we have chosen to support this project with our local Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Rotary. We’re delighted to continue to play our part in sending these shoe boxes to an area that wants for an education we often take for granted here on the coast. It’s a great team effort across three coast schools and Bendigo Bank and Rotary have just been amazing to work with,” Cooroy State School Principal,

Des Deighton said. “It was great for all our students to get involved and to give something back. They’ve had a ball putting the care parcels together. Bendigo Bank and Rotary will now assist us in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” he said. “Every shoe box is personally decorated and had items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It added something simple but personal to each box. Needless to say, it was quite the moment when the kids held up their boxes at our assembly on 19 June,” Mr. Deighton concluded. Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd (SCCFSL) who manages the Cooroy Community Bank branch, Rick Cooper says he feels the project continues to build on some-

Robert C. Hilditch D.C.

thing special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities, and in this case the recipients will be international ones. Last year around 1,200 shoe boxes arrived and more than 3,000 kids turned up to receive one, so the need is there and we’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material directly to the place where it’s needed.

news Your end of financial year checklist - part 2 Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IN the last edition of Cooroy rag, I reminded you it was THAT time of year again. Yes, it’s time to get ourselves organised with our finances and tax invoices in preparation for completing your tax return. That means you need to prepare your group certificate, details of interest earned from shares and be sure not to forget to claim your bank fees. Remember we also had the new budget announced recently, and some of the planned changes are likely to affect you. So, this is a good time to check with your accountant and financial planner to see what impact these changes will have on you and your tax situation. In line with this, have you checked into the Medicare levy and private health insurance, to see if these will have an effect on you? Some banks will offer health insurance and may even have had incen-

tives if you joined up before the end of the financial year. What about superannuation and the co-contribution the federal government is offering? Is this applicable to you and have you made the appropriate contributions for the year? Now is a great time to check with your financial planner for the important changes that have occurred regarding superannuation. It’s also a great time to call in and see the wide range of services banks provide above and beyond your every day banking.

Lastly, are you aware of the rebates the federal government is offering small businesses? Have you looked into these to see if your business can benefit? Your accountant can offer further information on this rebate and your local bank manager can provide options for financing business items. If you would like to know more about how your bank can help you with health insurance, superannuation or business finance, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at Geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

A budget that delivers MAYOR Noel Playford has presented a Noosa budget that he says “faithfully delivers on the Free Noosa promises” made in the de-amalgamation campaign. He said “This budget is all about keeping faith with the Noosa community. It’s about restoring services, reducing bureaucracy, building and replacing infrastructure for the future, and being fair to ratepayers.” For the first time in Noosa’s history there will be no increase in the general rate charged to ratepayers, although some levies and charges will be adjusted to improve cost recovery in particular areas. These changes will be fully detailed on the Noosa Council website, www.noosa.qld.gov.au. “The only change for most ratepayers will be an additional $9 on each 6 monthly rate notice for kerbside pickup of their waste and recycle bins. On the other hand, the cost of a green waste bin will fall by $5 each 6 months,” Mr Playford said. Mr Playford said that under amalgamation, the minimum general rate had risen to be amongst the top tier for comparable councils in Queensland. “It’s time for a pause for our ratepayers” he said “and

we’ve made sure we can afford it.” The budget: • Reinstates services lost through amalgamation. • Makes full provision for replacing infrastructure such as roads and bridges. • Delivers a dramatically improved capital works program for Noosa Shire. Mayor Playford said “not only does this budget return the services that Noosa residents had come to expect, but it does so with a small operational surplus and it meets the test for financial sustainability.” The mayor said he’s proud of the big picture painted by his budget. “It delivers on the promises made, and will continue to do so in the years ahead. We’re determined that the Noosa of tomorrow will be one that looks and feels well cared for, not a rundown shire with ageing infrastructure and second-rate services.” The 10 year forecast shows that debt can be reduced and cash reserves increased with rate rises held within CPI. Council chips in to promote responsible pet ownership NOOSA Council is partnering with the RSPCA by contributing $12,000 towards a campaign promoting responsible pet ownership. “Operation Wanted” is a de-sexing and micro-chipping campaign aimed at reducing the number of unwanted kittens, puppies and older animals that are left unclaimed in shelters and pounds every year. The Noosa campaign forms part of a targeted approach which is also occurring in

eight other regions across the state to address the unwanted animal problem. Council is pleased with the support provided by all of Noosa’s veterinarians who have offered their services for a 20% discount off the usual cost to de-sex and micro-chip animals. Residents are urged to visit their local vet clinic and take advantage of this generous offer which is available until 31 August 2014.

Capital injection: A dramatic increase in the capital works program to $23-million dollars, more than double the expenditure planned for Noosa under the amalgamated council. Road resealing: $8-million to begin restoring our roads to their condition before amalgamation. Renewal of infrastructure: The asset sustainability ratio is the measure of how well a council provides for the renewal of ageing infrastructure. This rises to 100%, well above the rate of 70% under amalgamation. Noosa Biosphere Reserve: Funding of $250-thousand for projects related to the local economy and environment. Community Engagement: Significant funding for initiatives to allow the Noosa community to participate in local decisionmaking processes. “I mention that last, but certainly not least” said Mr Playford. “Community engagement is a key to protecting our lifestyle. The people of Noosa fought to restore this council, and now we are committed to giving them a real say in decisions. We’ll have more on this soon. As they say, watch this space.”

WITH global warming back in the news here and abroad, Cooroy’s Dr Leah Barclay is thrilled to be joining likeminded leaders in Melbourne next week to receive personal training from former US Vice President Al Gore and become a Climate Leader with Mr Gore’s Climate Reality Project. “This is fantastic opportunity to work with leaders from across the world and explore new methods of creative resilience and adaptation in response to climate change,” said Dr Barclay. Dr Barclay has just returned from the USA, where she has been working with six other UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Arizona, California and New Mexico exploring the value of rich media environments and digital technology in facilitating environmental awareness and engagement. The results from her research will be presented in Eu-

The Climate Reality Project is Mr Gore’s climate change leadership program. In partnership with the Australian Conservation Foundation, TCRP’s mission is to educate the public about the harmful effects of global warming and to work toward solutions at a grassroots level worldwide. “We have taken these trainings around the world, and in every community committed leaders are standing up to take action on the climate

crisis. Our goal is to provide them with the best possible tools to become even more effective leaders,” said Ken Berlin, CEO of the Climate Reality Project. “The more I research climate change, the more I realise the incredible value of connecting communities and bringing people together in an interdisciplinary context. The Climate Reality Project is a fantastic example of creating a global community of people who truly believe we can slow the ramifications of climate change if we work together,” said Dr Barclay.

OUR Dinner group was waived this month and instead we had the President’s Luncheon combined with the Clubs 25th birthday celebrations. The event was organised and planned with the staff of the Cooroy Victory Hotel. Almost forty members attended with invited guests, the President of the Rotary club Lyn and Ken Hodges and one of our own early Presidents, Doug McKay with his wife Avril. The luncheon was conducted in a private function area and the staff did their very best to service our needs. Champagne was thrust upon us on arrival, which no one complained about and the meal was served quickly and it was top quality. The noise in the room was deafening, with the chatting and joking and laughter. A great way to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Club President Marlene Strudwick welcomed all guests and along with the President of Rotary’s wife Lyn Hodges cut the 25th birthday cake.

Our rural future - your choice NOOSA’S rural communities and the development of an action plan under the existing Rural Futures Strategy has been a focus for Cr Sandy Bolton since the new Noosa Council has been formed. Cr Bolton has been out and about with stakeholders seeking information on their priorities to assist our rural communities’ and their economic development. “It has been an educational and enlightening time over the last 5 months. In response to requests and submissions from organisations and residents, it has been my aim to identify barriers that have hindered our local producers, are considered issues in relation to rural living, or that affect hinterland businesses from sustaining. From this, an interim “Noosa Country Action plan” has commenced in which to work on over the next 12 months, which includes the development of our very own “Noosa Country Strategy “ , which is very exciting” For producers and local business there has been a number of issues identified including the lack of branding, pathways for selling and exporting product, as well as excessive red tape and application fees for small operators, home based business and “niche “farmers. Infrastructure and signage was also of concern, as well as components of the Noosa Plan. For residents, the issues of transport, housing and conflicts between farming and lifestyle endeavours have been prevalent, with a desire to create Master Plans for their villages. With opportunities through the upcoming Biosphere Project, and the increase in demand for nutritious, safe food and support for short supply chains to reduce emissions and waste, Cr Bolton believes now is an opportune time for Council to provide a framework in which our rural communities can prosper . “The development of a Country Noosa Strategy which is attainable, has definitive outcomes and timelines is essential to assisting our rural endeavours.” There is a multitude of emerging opportunities

that may be suitable for our local industries. These include the growth areas of “wellness” industries, “niche” produce and value add’s , eco accredited endeavours and accommodation options for unique rural experiences. From a tourism angle, the promotion of a “Country Loop” which takes in our rural villages, with the sealing of Dr Pages Rd, interpretive signage, entry statements and maps are just some of the items under discussion. The reinstatement of the Food Trail, with effective pathways to showcase and sell product, and an integrated brand for local, regional and national promotion opportunities has been identified as essential to assist our rural producers.” “However, in order to be successful, and to create jobs for locals, it is vital that residents recognize the role they play in this. If the preference is for organic, GMO free produce, and a desire to decrease intensive farming practices across Australia, support this through your purchase choices. “Not only are you making a healthy choice for your family and the environment through less emissions, you are taking a stance on behalf of your community and future generations in retaining and creating jobs. ” As part of the Country Noosa Action Plan, a “Farming into the Future” Film and Networking evening will be held on July 2 at the J commencing at 6.30. “This is a wonderful opportunity for existing or potential farmers, as well as any resident that cares about food sources and the environment. Cost is just a gold coin donation. Information on the Rural Futures Strategy and upcoming community forums will be available in the coming weeks. For enquiries please contact Cr Bolton on 0405483579 or sandy.bolton@noosa.qld.gov.au.

A PERSON’S home is their castle and any equity in it is the owner’s to use as they wish. But the large amount of untapped wealth that is tied up in homes around the country has not gone unnoticed by the Government and others. Two high profile reports as referred to below have raised the possibility that one way to help fund the rising costs associated with an ageing population, is to bring the family home into the equation when it comes to aged care. New funding models Both the Productivity Commission in its An Ageing Australia: Preparing for the Future research paper[1] and The Grattan Institute in its Balancing budgets; tough choices we need report[2], have raised the possibility of using the equity in one’s home to help meet the costs. A government equity release scheme where individuals contribute half the annual real increase in their home values towards aged care was the Productivity Commission’s suggestion. The Grattan Institute suggested wealthy retirees draw down some of the value of their owner-occupied dwellings before accessing the age pension. People who failed the asset test due

to the value of their dwelling would be allowed to receive the aged pension, but they would accumulate a debt to the government, to be paid when the home was transferred or sold. Both schemes are not too dissimilar to existing reverse mortgage arrangements where a home owner can access the equity in their home for any number of reasons, repaying the amount when they leave or the home is sold. Under current arrangements, a person moving into an aged care facility requiring an accommodation bond does not have to sell their home to raise the necessary entry costs. The home is also exempt from the age pension assets test – two years from the date a person moves into care.[3] Indeed, a home will remain exempt beyond the two year period if: a partner or dependent child lives in the house; a carer who is eligible for an Australian Government income support payment has been living there for at least two years or a close relative who is eligible for an Australian Government income support payment has been living there for at least five years. The family home and the Age Pension There are times when a person does need to sell their home to fund the sometimes

large accommodation bond and this amount is also exempt from the age pension assets test. Any other proceeds from the sale of a home may impact how much age pension a person can receive. While it has been possible to pay a higher bond to ensure any age pension is still paid, significant changes to aged care funding which take effect from 1 July 2014, means this strategy may not be possible. Renting out the family home An accommodation bond can also be paid in regular instalments which may be funded through the principal residence being rented out. In this case the value of the home remains exempt from the age pension assets test, and the rental income is exempt from the age pension income test, while the periodic payments are being made. The rental income is not counted towards the calculation of income-tested daily care fees at an aged care facility. The family home often plays a large role in financial planning because at most times it is your largest asset. For the moment at least, it remains sacred. If you are considering strategies that involve you or your loved ones contemplating aged care accommodation, don’t hesitate to call us today on 07 5447 7740.

THREE times she’s made it into the National Top 10 Bestseller List. She lives in Doonan. Her books are about knitting. Visit Cooroy Library on 23 July and say hello to Loani Prior, the Sunshine Coast’s most successful and prolific knitting writer. Starting out with the Wallace House Knitters and Spinners Group, Loani has gone on to rack up three books in the National Top 10 Bestseller List. ‘When that first book was published in 2008, I couldn’t have imagined the Knit Change in store for me,’ she said. ‘It’s The Bloke’s fault. He took me to meet his family en masse one Christmas and, well, what was one to do but make a big impression with a great display of talent and generosity. I presented 15 stupendous tea-cosies on their pots accompanied by matching eggcosies on their cups all packed the same way all delivered at the same time. How could they not love me after that? And so, the tea-cosy nonsense began.’ Loani has a jam-packed year ahead which includes a travelling exhibition, Portraits of a Tea Cosy.

This joint project with photographer Mark Crocker reveals tea cosies from around Australia, alongside stories of their tea-loving and knitting owners that have the same fun and quirky design passion as Loani. ‘I reckon a designer needs two qualities above all else and that is the gall to think you can do anything and a strong inner critic to recognise when you aren’t quite there yet,’ she said. ‘I have a lot of duds hiding in a deep dark box in my house, and no you can’t see them.’ Loani is about to release her fourth book, Pretty Funny Tea Cosies, which hopefully will follow the success of the others, and be read by the over 90,000 tea cosy connoisseurs in countries such as Holland, France, Finland and Estonia. A MERGER between two respected Cooroy accounting firms, SPV Accounting and CJ Taxation Services is definitely a winning combination for all involved. “We’ve always had a really good working relationship and been respected colleagues rather than competitors. Carol started CJ Taxation Services as a home based business just like SPV Accounting, so our business philosophies are very similar. The merger of the two businesses effectively means we can pool our resources and offer expanded services. So it adds up to a great solution for everyone,” said accountant, Seb Vecchio. SPV Accounting will move into the offices of CJ Taxation Services at 1st Floor, Garnet Place, 1a Garnet Street, Cooroy. They

will continue to operate under the name of CJ Taxation Services with the existing staff of both businesses. The full range of accounting services will continued to be offered including taxation, auditing, bookkeeping, BSA licencing requirements and a range of business services such as cash flow forecasting and advice for business start-up, buying and/ or selling a business. “For our clients there won’t be much difference, other than new premises and a new business name if they have been a client of SPV accounting. And for clients of CJ Taxation Services just a few new faces in the office. We will continue to provide the same personalised service with professionalism and quality,” said Seb Vecchio.

WINTERTIME at our orchid house is a very relaxed time as the plants don’t need as much watering as the growing season and we are able to travel a little. We are on tank water and do not have an automatic watering system and I don’t get anyone in to water while we are away. The orchids we grow can handle 2weeks and more without water no trouble. Try that with the ferns. The orchid plants with pseudobulbs have a built in water storage so can handle long dry periods, so these are the ones I recommend. The Noosa Society celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and the club is going from strength to strength. Part of the celebrations the club is hosting an Orchid Show in Cooroy on the19th & 20th of September. There is wide variety of orchid flowers in bloom at this time of the year. One of the easiest and prolific flowering

orchids is soft cane Dendrobiums and there will plenty of these on show and for sale. The Noosa Society meets the first Saturday of each month at the Tinbeerwah Hall, 1pm for a 1.30 pm start. For more information contact John Green 54832764 or visit the Noosa Orchid society website.

news Mill Place Precinct driven by community pride & passion

COOROY RAG WHEN residents of Cooroy join together they become a formidable force, especially when prompted by unexpected hardship. The Cooroy Mill Place Precinct stands as a powerful display of the town’s determination to transform a crushing blow to the community, into one of the its great strengths. In 2000 the Queensland Government made a decision that meant the end for Cooroy’s historic timber milling industry. Over 70 jobs were lost and the future of the Old Mill Site and the town were in doubt. A group of concerned citizens got involved with a desire to secure the site for future generations, to preserve the town’s heritage and to create something truly special for the community. Just over a decade later, the Mill Place Precinct is a public space that is second to none on the Sunshine Coast. The precinct has many attractions such as the old sawmill boiler, the Cooroora Woodworkers and the Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initia-

tive, but the state-ofthe-art Cooroy Library is the Mill Precinct’s crowning jewell. “Everything at the Mill Place Precinct tells us something about Cooroy, our history, our future and most importantly the power of the community,” Mill Board President Tex Pipke said. “I think the library in particular, demonstrates the vision that people on the original Mill Board had for Cooroy… we did not just want a $2 million library, we envisaged something much bigger. “We now have a facility that is literally the core of the Cooroy community. The library is used from 6am each day with Yoga classes, open often until 10pm with conferences and meetings. “There have been many twists and turns along the way, with changes in state governments, council amalgamations and de-amalgamations, but the Mill Board has always remained true to its original goal and the site today truly reflects that.” Mill Board Secretary Carol Christensen said

the entire Mill Place Precinct was built on the strength and goodwill of the Cooroy community and our local councils. “The generous input of so many people over many years has helped us build this wonderful civic space,” Mrs Christensen said. “The creativity and vision of Noosa District High School Year 9 students led to the formation of the Log Maze, we have had local artists with community consultation complete artistic story boards showcasing to town’s timber milling history, and our local Land Care group helped plant out the creek,” she said. “Our volunteers the ‘Friends of the Mill’ make an enormous contribution to the operation of the precinct, including the library, the retail store and the fusion festival, giving up to 500 hours per month of time to the continued operation of the precinct. “It really is a great story about what this community has done for itself.” Wythes Real Estate representative

Samantha Hargrave said outstanding community assets such as the Lower Mill Precinct, in particular the Cooroy Library, were major drivers for people relocating to Cooroy. “This community has a truly can-do attitude that brings people together and creates a sort of ‘magic’. It is not surprising that so many people, in particular young families, want to move here,” Ms Hargrave said. “Fortunately we have great value real estate, such as the packages available at Erindale Park on Lake Macdonald Drive, where people can build their dream home in a beautiful location and become part of this very special community.”

Enjoy the morning Sun...

CERTAIN lifestyle properties in the Noosa Hinterland really have the ability to just lift your spirits when you visit them. 198 Arthys Rd, Cooran hits the bulls eye. Five acre properties have always been popular and this one must be the best value for money we have seen in a long time. Fully fenced and with a creek this land currently agisting some cattle. There is ample room for a horse or two and being only metres from the Noosa Trails network you can ride straight out from you own paddock through to Kin Kin and Lake Macdonald. If you’re not a horse or cattle person but love the country lifestyle and fresh air, this couldn’t be better, and you only really need to maintain your nice level house yard, and the rest of the paddocks will be kept tidy by the contented neighborhood cows. There is a great man shed with workshop area and is fully lined internally plus carpet on the floor! There is a 2nd smaller lady’s shed as well for storage and gardening etc. This home is nestled safely back from the road and is pro-

tected from harsh Western Summer sun. Cool mornings are perfect for sharing breakfast with the local native birds on the Eastern side. Bathed in sunshine and taking in the most beautiful views of Mt Pinbarren is the absolute best way to start your day. Cuddle up around the full brick fireplace on chilly nights, or pop the reverse cycle air-conditioner on if you prefer. The near new kitchen with walk in pantry is perfectly set out and the large gas Bompani cooker and rangehood can be easily accessed from the large island bench. Three spacious bedrooms, a large family bathroom with a 2 way separate toilet offers access from the laundry which also sports a shower cubicle. Living in Cooran is easy and enjoybale, locals enjoy the convenience of the general store with post office, sporting facilities, great Clooney’s restaurant, train and bus transport and other attractions. This home is only 5 minutes drive to either Pomona or Cooran and approx 35 Minutes to Noosa Phone Paul Bielby Countryside Realty on 0437 346 256.

real estate Small acreage with character

Each of the 3 bedrooms have direct access to the verandahs that wrap around the entire home. The main bedroom also has a walk through robe to its ensuite and boasts gorgeous stained glass windows. Open plan living combines with the central kitchen to create a very homely feel and calm ambience to relax and enjoy. The timber kitchen is extremely functional with loads of bench space, gas cook top, walk in pantry and casement windows that act as a servery to the extra deep covered outdoor area ideal for dining alfresco. This charming

home also features an open room with wall to ceiling timber shelves and desk, which could function as a library, home office or study. Heating and cooling is well taken care of with ceiling fans, air conditioning and also a slow combustion wood stove for those real chilly winter nights. real estate Thinking of selling or buying a property? Get the facts first!

COOROY RAG

IF you’re considering selling, or buying, your property in this thriving Real Estate market, your single most important decision is undoubtedly to find the best Real Estate Agent for the job. The right agent often makes an enormous difference to the final price you achieve and the experience you have along the way. Given that 80% of property is sold by 20% of agents, they are worth seeking out before you list! Finding these highly successful people within your local community is often very difficult, especially as there are usually multiple agencies and numerous agents to choose from. Fortunately with the online world moving as fast as it is, there is now a simple way to have an completely independent party with over 25 years genuine industry experience to do this for you, absolutely free, and at the click of a button. Performing Agents (performing

agents.com.au) is a locally established online company that makes it easy for sellers to choose from the top 2-3 performing agents in their local area. It’s a completely free, 100% independent and no obligation service with zero downside for sellers. It’s what they do and they are experts at it, Australia wide. They analyse listings held, recent sales, reputation and agency dominance before selecting an agent and then personally contact each agent to ensure they meet the high standards expected of them. A detailed report with their recommendations in then issued which empowers owners to literally choose from the best agents for their unique property. They passionately believe every property is unique and not all agents are the best fit for all types of property, or every even seller for that matter. Agents often have their own specific area of expertise and it’s very important that their individual expertise is matched with the type of property you are looking to

sell in order to get the best results. If you want to sell your property quickly for the best price, your best chance is with the best agent. It’s that simple. Performing Agents uses various expensive industry data and good old fashioned due diligence in order to match the best agents with the specific needs of the seller. If you own a luxurious house for example, you need an agent with a proven history of selling luxurious houses in your locality, not someone best suited to units or much lower priced properties. These agents typically already have buyers for your type of property given it’s what they specialise in. The same applies to

all property in all locations, which is why this concept is available Australia wide. The agents who dominate right now in a particular market segment really do stand out statistically if you know where and how to look. They are the best in the business for good reason and deserve their reputation as a standout local performer. All sellers really need to do when using this free service is to choose from the nominated best 2-3 agents. It really is that simple although choosing from the best will be harder than you think! For more information call Performing Agents on 1300 665 706.

dining & entertainment Romantic segmented landscapes

Well-known Gympie artist, Ken Gailer, is showing his new work at Lasting Impressions Gallery in Kenilworth from 13th to 27th July. In this new series titled ‘Hinterland and Other Places’, Gailer delights with his novel approach to landscape art. Within his fresh and beautifully harmonising colour schemes he presents the multitude of aspects that make up our landscape on the one canvas. Overarched by dramatic skyscapes, his intimate look into rainforest creeks, his rippling waterways and broad vistas combine to what he terms ‘romantic, segmented landscapes’. His love for the ancient volcanic remnants of the Glasshouse Mountains is evident in most of the paintings. Whether as translucent backgrounds to other elements of the painting or as the central motif they feature prominently in his work. ‘Ken’s masterful marriage of abstract colour patterns with traditional landscape painting offers a subjective vision of the Hinterland and encourages a fresh look at the part of the country we call home,’ says Kaye Cathro, Director of Lasting Impressions Gallery. ‘His new works are a highlight in his rewarding career as an Australian and international artist.’

dining & entertainment Tom Macbeth sends Princess Mary to the Archibald

LIGHT

TOM Macbeth’s photo-realistic portraits show his extraordinary ability to capture the likeness and personality of each subject . One would imagine this internationally recognised, multi-award winning artist has devoted his entire life to painting but in fact his outstanding ability is a recent discovery. Remarkably, he took up painting just under 5 years ago. In 2010, at the age of 49, he picked up a paintbrush for the first time.

He remembers that “it was quite daunting as I had no idea what I was doing.” But unperturbed, and with his sights set high, he entered his first oil painting into the Archibald Prize. His sitter was Professor Mike Archer, the world renowned palaeontologist who is attempting to clone the Tasmanian tiger to bring it back from extinction. Within two years, Tom did indeed make the Archibald Prize exhibition with his portrait of Jessica Watson.

His well-known sitters include triple world surfing champion Mick Fanning, legendary Antarctic explorer Syd Kirkby, Australian High Commissioner and Press Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, Mr John Dauth, and professor John Dalgleish Donaldson, father of Princess Mary. Back in 2001-2003, Tom had done some drawing with pastels after seeing an artist use them on a sidewalk. “I had no idea pastels were more commonly used for impres-

sionistic style work and, with no teacher at hand, I developed my own techniques to achieve photo-realistic detail.” Within those two years, Tom won a number of awards both here and overseas for his drawings and was honoured with the title of Master Pastelist. In 2003, tragedy struck and Tom’s wife was diagnosed with cancer. He set aside his art to care for his wife. Following her passing just one year later, Tom became a “Mr Mom”, turning his attention to raising his three children and focussing on his career as head of a large division of a corporate organisation. There was no time for the easel for the following seven years. It has to be said that Tom is one of those people who has an ability to consistently achieve regardless of what he turns his hand to. He is multi-talented in both his private and professional life. He has run marathons, triathlons, has trekked to Everest base camp, is a guitarist, singer, surfer, grows organic vegetables and

bonsai trees and is learning to salsa dance and to speak Spanish. He has four University degrees in the Geological Sciences and Engineering, including three Masters Degrees. “I love painting portraits as you get to meet people you wouldn’t ordinarily meet” says Tom. One memorable encounter was with multi Aria award winning singer/ songwriter Mark Lizotte (aka Diesel). Tom had been a fan of Diesels music for many years and after the sketching had a brief acoustic jam session with him. His latest and most prestigious project to date is the portrait Crown Princess Mary of Denmark for this years Archibald Prize. The sitting took place over a couple of days at the Palace in Copenhagen, as a sojourn in the middle of his round-theworld honeymoon with his new wife Carolina. He says things changed in his life when he met Carolina. “This is another wonderful stage in my life. Carolina is an incredible person with

the ability to view life from angles few of us ever get to appreciate. We love living on our beautiful acreage in the foothills of Mt Cooroy, one of Queensland’s famous Glasshouse Mountains.. I now paint full time and love every minute of it,” “The portrait sitting itself was quite casual and Princess Mary was very gracious. We did some sketching and discussed how she would like to be portrayed along with the message she wanted to express. It became evident during the brainstorming session that she has reached a point in her roles as both Crown Princess and

mother-of-four where she is more confident, and has more clarity, about the part she will play in the future of the Royal Family, of Denmark and on the world stage. Thus “Transformation” became the core theme and title of the painting” symbolised through a Monarch butterfly flying from the hand of the Princess. “The portrait took about three months to complete and it is now ready to be unveiled,” Tom says. It will be entered in the 2014 Archibald Prize which opens this month. For further information on Tom’s work, visit www.macbethart.com

FOR SALE A Touch Of The Past’ Coffee And Gifts

Lily Hope and Lana Sandford strut their stuff CONGRATULATIONS to Danceform students who will be performing with the Harvest Rain Theatre Company in the hit musical Cats. Lily Hope, Lana Sandford, Kelsey Hannah and Sammy Lederhose are students at Cooroy’s Danceform Studio.

This unique gift shop and coffee shop has 3 leases in place in Reserve Street Pomona, one of the town’s main streets. The shop is opposite Stan Topper Park which holds country markets every 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month & the famous King of the Mountain Festival which takes place on the 4th Sunday in July. This business venture presents a great opportunity for a husband and wife team or a few friends pooling their resources. Gay and Ken started off in the centre shop, when the shop next door became available they decided it was time to expand & put a hole in the wall & leased that one, and they did the same with the 3rd shop. The larger premises has allowed Gay to incorporate beautiful gift lines such as Amgads linen, quilts, cushions, tablecloths etc. The shop also stocks Settler Bears, Victoria Lace linen, Linens ‘N’ Things linen, lead light lamps to mention a few & is always fully stocked. The table and chairs dotted throughout the shop are all covered with lovely tablecloths keeping in the style of the surroundings - so you can enjoy your lunches in comfort. Currently serving great coffee with a large range of homemade cakes all served on old china & with old fashioned knives and forks. This is a very unique shop with a great atmosphere & needs to find new owners who love the business like the current owners. The business is selling due to retirement & there is plenty of scope to take the business a step further.

For further information contact Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland on 5485 1788 or phone Gay at the shop on 5485 1883 or just come for a drive and look for yourself.

health What are the differences between Pilates and Yoga?

COOROY RAG

• Physiotherapy • Sports Injuries • Complex Case Management Tim Robinson (DipPhys, MAPA, MNZFSM)

Shop 8/14 Maple Lane Cooroy P: 5447 7670 - F: 5447 7623 rehab@nexmail.com.au

I AM often asked this question and this is understandable because at first glance they appear very similar. I am sure you have heard about the benefits of one or both these forms of exercise but do you know what a class or session entails or how they differ? The fundamental difference is Yoga (the word actually translating to “union” or “to bind”) strives to achieve a union between mind, body and spirit, with traditional classes combining breathing exercises (pranayama), body exercises (asanas) and mind exercises (meditation). Pilates exercises are initiated from the deep lower abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to provide the body with a strong foundation to move from. Five need to know things about Pilates, 1. Pilates is equal parts strength and stretch. Each exercise should have those 2 things going on. 2. Pilates should translate to your everyday life. Also called Functional Movement. Reminding or retraining your body to sit, stand,

walk, squat, etc in the most efficient way possible, whether you are an athlete, a mum, a 50 + work hour per week person or a retiree. 3. Pilates moves from the centre out. Initiating at your core, but using this foundation to move arms, legs, support your head, etc. 4. Pilates is exercise! It is not “laying on a mat”, “just stretching” or any of the other varieties of those statements. If you are a beginner it may take a few classes to “find your feet”, but once you do you should leave the class feeling the activation and stretching. 5. Pilates is compatible with all other forms of exercise. Many athletes love it because it’s a great way to ensure their bodies move efficiently and effectively resulting in fewer injuries and less time away from the job. Walkers, swimmers, surfers, golfers, footballers, netballers, yogis, etc would all benefit from Pilates. 5 need to know things about Yoga, 1. Yoga isn’t a religion. Traditional yoga is a

way of living, combining the aspects you might see in a class setting and the personal and social code of ethics called yamas and niyamas. 2. You need to be flexible to attend yoga. Yoga poses are actually more easily achieved by those who consider themselves “inflexible” students. Flexible or hyper mobile students tend to ‘flop’ into their joints rather than activating muscles to control the pose. 3. Listen to your body. Are there poses that are uncomfortable, bordering on painful? Yes. Become aware of the differences in your own body in relation to fatigue, stretch, muscle “burn” and pain. If it doesn’t feel right then stop, ask questions, realign, reassess. This one also refers to those “over achiever” types, allow yourself a slow, lazy or off yoga practise once in a while, it isn’t about perfection. 4. Yoga is personal. There are no goal medals for being stronger, more flexible or more balanced than the person on the next mat.

Cassie O’Grady The time spent on the mat is your time, no one else’s. 5. Be kind to yourself. One important thing to know about both. Yoga and Pilates shouldn’t be practised exclusively solo, for example by following a DVD. Home practise is great in addition to the guidance and expertise of a professional. Yoga and Pilates can be practised in conjunction with each other or you may find that one correspondence with your body better than the other. If you are trying either or both forms of exercise for the first time and you have an unfavourable outcome, don’t give up. Either talk to the instructor, try

another instructor, talk with your health care professional (Physio, Chiro, GP, etc), talk with friends about your experience. So why not give one or both a try, or if you are attending regularly and the result or outcome contradicts any of the above it maybe time to reassess your practise. Either way I hope to see you on the mat soon. Cassie O’Grady is the pilates and yoga instructor at Hinteractive Physio. She can be contacted on 5442 5556. health Boost your immune system

COOROY RAG

YOUR immune system is one the most complex systems on the planet. It is highly evolved and is able to cope with an amazing diversity of challenges. The problem is, our world is not becoming cleaner, but is changing rapidly, with new chemicals and toxins introduced every day and that means the amount of stuff that your immune system has to deal with is increasing. Our immune system is highly dependent on some specific nutrients with the main ones being zinc and vitamin C. Research shows that many peoples’ zinc levels are extremely low. Unlike other minerals, there is a very simple test for your zinc status. As one of the first indications of low zinc function is a loss of taste and smell, a simple and quick taste test is able to determine zinc level. Restoring low zinc level however is not always a simple process. “We test many people who take a zinc supplement and find that they are low to very low in zinc. Switching to a high potency liquid zinc supplement has a dramatic effect, not only on their tests, but also on the many signs of low zinc level,” says naturopath, Maria Sturre.

It is a similar story with vitamin C. Anyone with a highly processed diet is guaranteed to be vitamin C deficient. Your immune cells have the highest concentration of vitamin C of any cells in your body. Most animals make their own vitamin C in large amounts, but humans lack a specific enzyme and so are unable to produce it. To keep your immune system in top shape, a combined zinc and vitamin C supplement is proven to get into your immune cells fast. There are also some herbs that have potent stimulating effects on our immune system such as Andrographis paniculata. It is important, however, to ensure that you are getting the highest quality product and using it at the appropriate dose. Having a robust immune system and having the right nutrients and herbs on hand to catch viruses early is the main defence against all those infections that we can get at any time. So call Make a Difference Health & Fitness now for a zinc assessment and to learn about the best products to boost your immune system. Health benefits of bingo STUDIES have shown that playing bingo regularly can offer positive mental health benefits. One study compared the hand eye coordination and accurate response times of regular bingo players and non-players. The results clearly showed that bingo players had faster hand eye reflexes and more accurate responses because of the mental dexterity maintained by playing bingo. In the same study researchers compared the groups by age. Research-

ers created ‘young’ and ‘old’ categories and test results between the two groups were almost identical. The older subjects that played bingo had the same response times as the young participants. If you are looking for fun and entertainment bingo is the perfect choice. Aubergine & Root Vegetable Frittata Bread Winter Warming Recipe by Amy Steinbeck

PREHEAT your oven to 180 degrees celcius. Rinse 1 medium aubergine (eggplant), 2 medium potatoes, 1 small sweet potato and two medium carrots. I didn’t peel my root veg as I like them rustic and enjoy the extra nutrients that are contained in the skin, but it’ entirely up to you. You can also use whatever veg you love. Chop into medium chunks. Spread over a couple of baking trays and smother in coconut oil. Pop into the oven for 25 minutes. Rub butter around a 25cm spring-form tin and line with baking paper. While the veg are roasting, whisk 6 eggs a medium bowl, then add in ¾ cup ground activated almonds, ½ tsp bicarb soda, salt and pepper, 1 tablespoon dulse flakes, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon dried dill and mix until combined. Set aside. Finely slice 2 brown onions into crescents and add to a small saucepan with 3 tablespoons ghee and cook on a low heat with the lid on, stirring occasionally. They will turn nice and soft and translucent and brown slightly. Keep your eye on them so that they don’t burn. After about 15 minutes, remove the lid and continue cooking and stirring every now and then. You want them to be a nice golden colour when they are done. Take the veg out of the oven and tip them into your prepared tin. Drop in a few teaspoons of soft goat’s curd, or leave out if dairy isn’t your thing.

Pour the egg mix over the veg and pop into the oven for around 35 minutes. Stick a wooden skewer in the center; if it comes out clean then it is done. Serve with a lovely fresh green salad (mustard greens are my new fave and I’ve been growing my own – so easy), top with some of your caramelised onions and some dehydrated (or marinated) black olives. Put any remaining onion ‘jam’ in a jar and use up over the next week or so. Enjoy! Amy Steinbeck Love it? Share it! health Noosa Hinterland Denture Services Injectables available at Lakeridge Health & Beauty New dentures

COOROY RAG

LAKERIDGE Health and Beauty in Cooroy are thrilled to introduce an exciting new treatment at their salon. Timeless Cosmetic Services’s specialist injectables doctor will be visiting the salon regularly from Friday the 25th of July. Timeless Cosmetic Services, offer a five star service when it comes to our clients. Clients want to have peace of mind

when it comes to cosmetic injectables. Timeless Cosmetic Services evolved in 2008, after recognising the need in the industry for a safe, education base service to be provided in salons across the state. Our point of difference is that you are seen by the doctor at each and every appointment. We do not have ANY nurse

injectors, who work independently. The team of doctors at Timeless Cosmetic Services are the most sought after cosmetic specialists in Queensland. Their focus is on listening to our clients, with an emphasis on education about their treatments. An upfront quote is given to all of our clients with a ‘menu’ of treatment options for them to pick and choose from. Often, at the initial consultation with clients our doctors spend a considerable amount of time educating clients on the reasons they may have visible signs of aging. Clients then are given a variety of treatment options, and a clear explanation of how each treatment works. Most importantly, reassurance is offered to our clients, that the treatments today are focused entirely on subtle enhancement of their facial

features. Long gone are the days of the ‘trout pout’ lips and obvious cosmetic work of the 1980’s. Our doctors aim solely on ‘winding back the clock a few years’ and making sure that our clients look their age, not ten years older than what they really are. The best feedback we get from our clients is “you know what? No one at work could pick what I had done! They told me I looked fresh and relaxed”. Timeless Cosmetics also offer safe and effective rapid weight loss programs that are guaranteed to ensure that you lose FAT not muscle. These programs are clinically proven to be effective (lose up to 10kg in 3 weeks) and are ONLY available via prescription from our Specialist Doctors. Our Registered Nurse in the team has done the 6-week program in April this year and lost 14.5kgs.

Our treatments include Anti-wrinkle injections for Frown lines, Foreheads, Crows feet, Eyebrow lift, Excessive sweating, Migraine management, Volume Replacement and Correction for Lips, Cheeks; Eight point face lift Dr Axell Jones has been practicing cosmetic injectables for a number of years and has extended his services to include cosmetic injectables (wrinkle correction, volume replacement for lips and cheeks) and has a special interest in anti-ageing medicine. Dr Jones regularly attends conferences to ensure relevant and medically proven antiageing products; procedures and interventions are incorporated into his practice. Foot Pain? Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Talk to the Experts

Exercise is the key to happy and healthy ageing! TAKING regular exercise even in later life can make you up to seven times more likely to stay healthy, according to a British Study. Those who are active as pensioners can stave off major illnesses such as heart disease and dementia. The eight-year British study found that those who exercised at least once a week were between three and seven times more likely to be classed as “healthy agers”. Researchers say being active is the key to preventing serious disease and disability. Regular exercise also bolsters mental health by protecting against depression. A senior cardiac nurse at

www.cooroyrag.com.au

the British Heart Foundation, said: “This shows us that even if you don’t become active until later in life your health will benefit”. The study suggested that adults should aim for 150 minutes a week of activities. The researchers found that sustained physical activity was associated with improved healthy ageing – absence of disease, freedom from disability, high cognitive and physical functioning and good mental health. Significant health benefits were even seen among participants who became active relatively late in life. The study tracked 3,500 people with an average age of 64 for more

than eight years. Researchers were looking not only at the absence of major disease or disability, but at mental health. This included cognitive dexterity and the ability to maintain social connections and activities.

Scientific research across the world has consistently hailed the benefits of keeping fit in old age. Last year a study showed that women who have an active lifestyle can increase life expectancy by five years. For men, it was six

years. Exercise for Seniors is available at Miva Street Church Hall on Tuesday mornings at 9.30am, classes focus on cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and fun. Call Lucy on 0412 489313 for details.

Jos Truscott, Jeff Fraser, Janey Richards and Natalie Barlow The Pomona Gallery will hold their annual KOM exhibition on Sunday 27th July so people attending the King of the Mountain festivaql will be able to browse through the gallery as well. Their theme this year is “Spotlight on Pomona” so artist members have “scoured” Pomona looking at some interesting local subject matter to create into an artwork for the big occasion.

Pomona SS one of Noosa Council’s shining STARS IT was a proud day for the students, staff and parents at Pomona State School when Councillor Joe Jurisevic visited last Friday. He presented the school with a Certificate of Achievement for the Council’s STARS program undertaken by the students at the school. Noosa Council sponsors a waste education program called the STARS program which teaches kindergarten, primary and secondary school students the importance of reducing waste and the best methods for recycling various materials. The program also involves teaching students how to undertake composting, worm farming and several other methods of reducing waste to landfill. Since implementing the STARS Program, the school has reduced its waste being sent to landfill by 52%. The school fills almost six wheelie bins of recycling a week and two wheelie bins

of food scraps being composted. Pomona State School is now rescuing more than 300 wheelie bins from landfill each year. The enthusiastic state school didn’t stop there; they are also reducing and avoiding waste by holding Nude Food Lunch days every term. Other local schools and childcare centres have also signed up for the STARS program and all are making excellent progress in reducing waste and increasing recycling. Councillor Jurisevic praised the school’s efforts congratulating the entire school community on a fantastic waste reduction result. “The challenge ahead is for students to take this great attitude about reducing waste with them into high school and into the rest of their lives. We can all do this in our own homes, schools and businesses to reduce waste and improve recycling every day,” he said.

pomona Annual Rugfest THE Fifth Annual Rugfest will be held in Pomona Memorial Hall on Saturday, 19th July. Originally based in Tewantin Catholic Parish Hall, Rugfest was such a success, it was moved to Pomona Hall to accommodate more people. Last year, maximum patronage was reached, sitting 200 for a delicious soup luncheon as well as displaying the 40 beautiful woollen knee rugs/waggas to be auctioned. Over $5000 was raised. The waggas have been constructed, using recycled woollen garments and donated fabric. “ Following last year’s event, we had several donations of woollen clothing and material from people, very happy to see their no longer worn garments upcycled into beautiful and useful rugs”, said Brenda Carlos, Rugfest Coordinator. “ It has been particularly challenging, knowing these garments have often been in families for generations. We are hoping the donors will come and like what we have done.” ”Our philosophy is to spread warmth, both with the blankets and with a community gathering, and to eliminate beautiful, woollen fabric going to waste. Funds raised go to Vinnies Winter Appeal, whereby people in need are supported.” ”We have a lot of fun preparing the rugs with many hours spent unpicking, cutting, colour matching, designing and then sewing.” Please come along, enjoy a delicious lunch and maybe win a lovely warm rug. There are styles and colours to suit every taste. Don’t forget there will be a huge array of vintage linen and napery for sale at ridiculously low prices, also” Tickets ($20, including lunch and 20 raffle tickets) will be on sale at Noosa Catholic Parish Office, Tewantin, at the Sunday masses and Pomona Post Office.

Keeping in Touch UNDER a clear blue sky and with the temperature plummeting a marvellous afternoon was had at our Junior Grand Finals to end our Winter Season. Our U10 division got the afternoon underway with a sickness ravaged Cool Runnings being beaten in a courageous effort against a better team in the Maroons. The Maroons who have set the standard all season were relentless in their attack. It was a mighty effort by all of the players on the field. Purple Panthers played a great game against Good Shepherd who came away with the win by just one touchdown. The Purple Panthers defensive effort although in-

spirational until the end, couldn’t quite match Good Shepherd’s running game. Blazers and Twisters played an entertaining match with Blazers eventually coming out on top. The improvement in skills and match play within the U10’s has been outstanding this season. Team Players of the season for their sportsmanship, support and respect for their own team mates, opposition and officials were Maddie Dwyer and Zayne Miller Next in the line up for Grand Final glory saw games in the U12 division. Saints under the guidance of Baz had a convincing win over That Cool Team. It was a great effort by all players but special mention to That Cool Team who although down on numbers were gallant in defeat with a never give up attitude. Banana Splits and Good Shepherd played well but the Splits were just too good on the day. The final match in this division saw the Purple Storm girls saving their best performance till last with a well earned win over Steppers. The U14/16 division saw a battle of the boys between Inferno and NDSHS 8’s boys. NDSHS came out with all guns blazing and looked by far the better side in the opening stanza and headed to the break in the lead. A rejuvenated Inferno side hit the ground running in the second half playing a much more structured brand of touch. With the teams scoring touchdown for touchdown Inferno were the eventual winners with the winning touchdown awarded just before the final siren. The match between ABL2 and NDSHS 9’s saw the under manned ABL2 team get out to an early lead and managed to hold on gamely against the stronger finishing NDSHS 9’s. High expectations were held in the game between St Teresa’s Maroon and Sunshine Rebels due to their last encounter resulting in a ‘drop off’ win to St Teresa’s. Both teams didn’t disappoint their supporters and deliv-

ered a high quality match with Sunshine Rebels, playing with no subs, getting the better of St Teresa’s in this one. In a game that went down to the wire SBSHS 16’s just got the better of Good Shepherd. Both teams gave it their all for the entire match. The final match of the day turned out to be the battle for Year 8 supremacy between NDSHS 8’s Green and NDSHS 8’s Blue. In a reversal of fortune from the semi final match the Blue team definitely peaked at the right end of the season and taking the win. Jerry-Lee Flynn and Billy Flynn were named Team Players of the Season in the U14/16 division. Each season we like to acknowledge the huge effort that is put in each and every week by our junior referees. Whilst each and every one of them is truly appreciated, this season two of our referees have been nominated to receive an award. The Referee Encouragement Award went to Scott Bailey. This is a remarkable achievement for Scott in his first season as a referee. The Referee of the season award was earned by Giverny Robinson for her continued dedication and effort put forward in this position. Noosa Touch would like to thank all of our players, referees coaches and supporters for a terrific season. A big thank you to Cooroy IGA for their continued support of our Grand Final sausage sizzles. Our summer season sign on will be on the 23rd of July with games scheduled to commence the following week. We look forward to seeing all of our players return and any new players are more than welcome. Our regular season may be over but our Noosa representative teams have been training over the last couple of months in the lead up to the Queensland Junior State Cup which will be held over three days from the 11th – 13th July.

Myall St, Cooroy 5447 6258

ON the 21st June the Pomona-Cooran Cutters RLFC took the opportunity to use their home game against Mary Valley to hold a fundraising day in association with Close the Gap campaign to raise funds for the awareness of health issues within the indigenous community. The team wore specially made jerseys for the day to emphasise the cause. The club ran a raffle on the day containing footy merchandise from both the Cutters and Close the Gap as well as some original indigenous paintings donated by local artist Kenny Sullivan. There was also an amazing dancing display by the local Gubbi Gubbi tribe which kept the crowd entertained between games. The day was a great success for all involved, including the cutters players who were victorious in their match winning 38-16. The next home game on 19th July will mark the club’s 25th Anniversary with memorabilia and celebrations planned for after the game at the Pomona Hotel.
