Cooroy gets seat on De-amalgamation Advisory Committee THE Hon David Crissafuli, Minister for Local Government, Community Recovery & Resilience recently requested the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc to recommend someone from their executive to be on the Local Advisory Committee for the Noosa de-amalgamation. “The Cooroy Chamber is proud to be involved in this process and sees it as an endorsement of the work that has been done by the Chamber for both its members and the wider community over the last 30 plus years,” said Danielle Taylor, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Inc. For many years now the Cooroy Chamber has been a voice for the community as well as business and has been involved in many projects that have served the betterment of the community such as the Cooroy Lower Mill Board, the Cooroy Library, upgrade of Apex Park, public meetings, working groups and community events. They have a good track record of community involvement and also have many community groups that are members. The Chamber Executive’s nomination was Danielle Taylor to be the representative on the committee as they felt her involvement with both businesses and local community groups throughout the hinterland and the Noosa region would be beneficial to the process. This recommendation has been confirmed and the first meeting of the Local Advisory Committee was held this week. Danielle explained, “Our role is to provide advice to the Transfer Manager, Peter Franks on local matters to assist him in carrying out his role. We will be meeting at least once a month or more often if needed. We are also going to organise a public meeting at Cooroy which Peter Franks has agreed to attend in about six weeks and we encourage everyone to come along to find out more about the process. And we urge everyone to check the news section of the Cooroy website (www.cooroy.com.au) regularly as we will place any relevant information there. Also, Mr Franks has indicated he is very open to be contacted directly with any issues.”

announced later in the day in the Amphitheatre at the Noosa Festival of Water. Whilst there’s no restriction on fishing from the shore, water craft must be paddle power only, kayaks or canoes –sorry, no boats this time. Top prize is an

Esprit Fishing Kayak courtesy of Viking Kayaks valued at $900. Entry costs $20 for adults and $10 for children under 17 with all proceeds raised going to support the breeding program for the endangered Mary River Cod at the Gerry Cook Hatchery on Lake Macdonald. Over the past decade, kayak fishing has rapidly grown in popularity, particularly on the Sunshine Coast where the weather is warm year round. Modern kayaks are relatively lightweight and inexpensive, don’t need fuel or much maintenance and are more easily stored,

transported and launched than a boat. The range of kayaks and accessories on the market is extensive, catering to every taste and budget, whether fishing in fresh or salt water. Kayaks can be paddled, and/or peddled with the feet, leaving the hands free to fish. The calm waters of Lake Macdonald are well suited to kayak fishing. There are a number of good fishing spots on the lake, including the middle of the lake where the aerators create a bubble trail of oxygen. New Era for The Lower Mill Site

Call today to go in the waiting group for your child, and for a no obligation tour of the centre “A Nuturing and Educational Environment of Excellence”

11 Kauri Street, Cooroy - 5472 0505

THE Lower Mill Board was established over eight years ago to give Cooroy locals the opportunity to help guide the development of the Lower Mill site for the benefit of all members of the community. Since that time, the Board has worked closely with the Butter Factory as well Cooroy Library Precinct mangers, Woodworkers and the Camphor Laurel Initiative to co-ordinate a wide range of projects, including the increasingly successful Fusion Festival. Change came at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Board, when long standing President, Carol Christenson stood down after many years of diligent service, and Tex Pipke was elected as her replacement. This meeting also saw Ray Kelly, member of the Board since its inception, retire to pursue other interests after many years of hard work as Treasurer and general wise council. “The Lower Mill Board is now ready to open up to wider membership,“ said Mr Pipke after his election. “There are still important decisions to be made about the future of the Lower Mill Site, and we look forward to working with the Cooroy community to define a vision that we can all be proud of. New membership rules make it easier for people to join with us on this journey, and we will be holding more General Meetings to canvass proposals and discuss plans.”

Permaculture Noosa seed saving presentation SEED Saving Presentation: Thursday June 20, from 7pm, at Cooroy Memorial Hall. There has been increased interest recently from people wanting to learn more about saving their own seeds. An appreciation of the importance of preserving heritage seed is becoming more widespread. Not only is there fear of big corporations controlling and monopolising seeds, but also a desire to take control of feeding ourselves without dependency on other sources.

To know how to collect, process and save seeds to keep for the next season’s sowing is therefore very important. Permaculture Noosa Seed Savers meet monthly on the 2nd Thursday morning of each month in Pomona at “A Touch of the Past” coffee shop. We exchange seeds, process and package, and have discussions on growing food. It will be an entertaining night filled with interesting stories, slide shows and handson processing of seeds. It will highlight

important aspects of seed saving in order to save seeds with traits and genetic variability that are necessary for producing the healthiest plant. Permaculture Noosa meetings are FREE and open to the public. Beginning at 7pm with a Marketplace (where members sell their produce or homemade products), the guest speakers start at 7.30pm and supper (gold coin donation) will be served at 9pm. BOUQUET to a young lad coming from Overlander Drive down Ferrells Rd on Wed 22nd, on a skateboard in the rain. He saw my husband in our carport, so stopped and brought in the Cooroy Rag to save him from going out in the rain to get it. His gesture was much appreciated. Our thanks to him again. BOUQUET to the kind gentleman who placed my lost birthday card back into my mailbox as I had put the wrong house number on it. I readdressed it and the birthday boy received it belatedly. Thank you for taking time to do this kind deed ~ J. Jones

What’s that patter of madly rushing feet?? It’s the sound of politicians beating a hasty retreat, Not only the top men, but also rank and file, Queuing up and crying a tearful denial. They cunningly tried to slip through the House, Keeping as quiet as the proverbial mouse, Legislation that could be considered a cynical rip-off, Putting more money into the political trough.

Clinic Hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday By appointment only

But it seems that the story leaked, quite indiscreet, And the pollies en masse had a rush of cold feet. Of course when the story hit the front page, It stirred the public into justified outrage.

4 Emerald Street, (Opp IGA) Cooroy Phone

All sides were the target, all parties got a blast, So it was decided to postpone it, and do it pretty fast. Some even declared they were against it, but would take it just the same, But they all should have felt a deep sense of shame.

BOUQUET to Del at the RSL for always going above and beyond the call of duty :)

A few brazenly suggested the scheme was fine, just badly presented, An excuse some spin doctor had conveniently invented. With all the cuts in the budget, the populace being told, That things were very tight, affecting every household.

BRICKBAT to the businessman and his friends who attended the comedy show at Cooroy RSL on June 1st. Your heckling and foul language towards young people trying to put on a show was not appreciated by other patrons. If you didn’t like the show just leave. People like you give Cooroy a bad name. I will not be patronising your business.

But they weren’t averse to getting the long-suffering civilians, To hand the pollies more unjustified millions. Why should the taxpayers be made to contribute?? It was even back dated, to get instantaneous use of the loot. I don’t know how they sleep at night, But I think they’ve had a well-deserved fright!! If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, it’s just possible you haven’t grasped the situation.

Cooroy Area Residents Association RESIDENTS Association invites Peter Franks to Cooroy Public Meeting: Cooroy Area Residents Association Inc. (CARA) celebrated its inaugural year at its AGM last month. At the meeting, the following new committee was appointed: President Judy Ditter; Secretary Halina Booth; Treasurer Dennis Pitman. Committee Members: Paul Summers, Sonya Malley, Paul Prentice, Geoffrey Datson. “It’s a fantastic group of people with a wide range of experience in all sorts of fields including law, town planning, the arts and finance,” said incoming President Judy Ditter. “After the meeting even more people came up to me and expressed a desire to help. The Association offers residents of Cooroy and surrounding areas a strong voice in local matters. Where the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of the business community, our focus is on resident amenity.” CARA Public Meeting- Thursday June 13th 6.30pm at the CWA Hall: At our next meeting, there will be a presentation by Peter Franks, the recently appointed Transfer Manager representing Noosa in the de-amalgamation process. In

addition, Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington will again give residents an update on the Sunshine Coast Council. This presents a great opportunity for anyone to come and ask the questions they may have regarding de-amalgamation and other Council issues. So come along on Thursday evening and be informed. The meeting will be held on June 13th at 6.30pm at the Cooroy CWA Hall. “Of course anyone can attend, they don’t have to be CARA members,” Ms Ditter said. CARA members currently hail not just from Cooroy but also Tinbeerwah, Ridgewood, Lake Macdonald, Forest Acres and Black Mountain- quite a reach. “I foresee this organisation becoming a significant voice for these hinterland communities. We have already been pro-active, keeping residents appraised of development applications in the area, holding candidate forums for both state and local government elections, and lobbying all levels of government,”Ms Ditter added. A website is under construction and will be available shortly. Anyone wanting more details can contact CARA at caracooroy@yahoo.com.au

news Equity in the Great Australian Dream

COOROY RAG Cooroy Probus Club THE Cooroy Probus Club meets in the Anglican Church hall, Miva Street, on the first Monday of each Month at 10am. Visitors are always welcome. A great variety of social outings and guest speakers are planned to keep members both active and involved. This month we have had a car rally to Pumpkin Festival with a stop on the way at Kilkivan. A delicious morning tea at the German bakery and a browse around the amazing antique shops delayed our arrival in Goomeri. Next on the agenda we have the One Act plays at Noosaville, a Noosa River and Canal cruise and the annual President’s BBQ. Before you know it, it will be Chistmas in July. For more information about this friendly and active group of retirees just ring President Lyn on 5485 0415

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

OWNING your own home is the great Australian Dream. It’s the dream you realise as you progress in life and certainly something to celebrate when you eventually pay off that mortgage! However, as we all know there are inevitable bumps in the road and sometimes even we have to be patient as our dream takes a little longer than expected to come true. It could be that you need to renovate your home to cater for an expanding family or make repairs to the property. You may also wish to update your home with a view to selling and achieving a better selling price. You may even be looking at investing in further property or even invest in the share market. When you don’t have the savings to achieve this or you don’t wish to put all your savings into the changes required you can approach your bank to borrow funds to help on these occasions. These additional funds can be raised by using the equity you have built up in your property. Equity can be achieved through several methods, one being that you could have paid down or even paid off the original debt or the real estate market has seen a rise in property value above what you originally paid. Equity is the gap between your level of debt and the value of your property. The value of your property needs to be established and most banks will engage a professional to access and report back to them on what they believe to be the value of your property in the current market. If your property is undergoing significant changes, the bank may request the details in the form of building contracts or quotes for work to be competed. This information will enable the valuation agent to access the full value of the property when the changes have been completed

hence achieving optimum equity position. Once your equity position has been established via this valuation your bank will advise you the amount of equity you have available. This could vary depending on your banks guidelines and the affordability of the extra funds against your current income and existing commitments. It’s then a matter of additional funds either being added onto your current loan or (if it suits your needs) establishing a separate loan. A separate loan could be taken over a shorter time frame then your existing debt, which would repay the debt earlier and bring you back on track as you progress through to owning your own home and realising that Australian Dream. At the Cooroy Community Bank branch, we’d be happy to help with the best structure or loan for your individual needs. You can also seek advice from your accountant or a financial advisor. If you would like to know more about any of these services, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au

news Sub Branch supports Duke of Edinburgh programme

COOROY RAG

John Simmons presents cheque to programme co-ordinator, Dean McMaster, watched on by Ron Sutton of the Sub Branch and participants in the Programme. THE Duke of Edinburgh programme is an internationally recog-

nised and operated programme that has been adopted by

Noosa High School in order to provide an alternate schooling

programme. Some of the students enrolled in the scheme have found difficulties adjusting to and succeeding in a traditional classroom setting. Due to a number of social, economic and budgetary reasons these students would be considered disadvantaged. The DOE programme offers these students progressive opportunities to obtain, over three years, a bronze, silver and gold award. The awards are not easy to obtain and students must undertake certain time commitments to achieve in four key areas – Physical Recreation, a Skill, Volunteering and Adventurous Journeys. As the student progresses through the programme the requirements become more demanding. The local Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub

Branch has come on board with this programme and kindly donated $500 towards equipment. They are also attempting to source other funding which will ensure that a meaningful programme will be provided to all interested students. This money will go towards safety equipment and specialised outdoor equipment and will be greatly appreciated by the students. Programme coordinator , Dean McMaster, recognises the link between the RSL and the personal characteristics being promoted to kids on the programme. Resilience, teamwork, courage, respect are all characteristics that embody our past and present troops and it is hoped that these characteristics are passed onto all students on the Dukes programme.

New premises for Cuts for Mutts DEB Scott, local Senior Veterinary Nurse and Dog Groomer at Cuts for Mutts Dog Grooming in Cooroy has now moved to bigger and better premises. The new salon is located at Shop 9/14 Maple Lane, Cooroy, just one shop behind where she originally was. Deb is extremely proud and pleased with the response to her new salon, with new and existing customers phoning and booking every day. Given her new premises, the salon is now open from Tuesday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm, and Saturdays from 8.30am – closed. Deb caters for working clients and is flexible with drop off and pick up times. Deb’s expertise lies in difficult, nervous and/or aggressive dogs. She treats each dog as an individual, and combines training and grooming in an extremely humane and practical manner, and … no grooming is performed behind closed doors. Deb also offers all veterinary advice, and is completely up to date with all

aspects of dog health from dental disease and skin disease to obesity, nutrition and training. “Dog grooming doesn’t just start with a haircut. That’s only one element of keeping your dog in peak condition,” she says. As well as grooming, Deb will branch out into dog health in the near future. Her aspirations are to hopefully provide practical clinics such as Puppy Preschool, Weight Loss Programs and Behavioural Issues, as well as health products to supplement your pooch. She believes that dog obesity has ballooned (pardon the pun), in the last few years, along with behavioural issues like separation anxiety and barking. “Fortunately, they can be corrected,” she says. Deb provides all aspects of grooming and caters to all breeds and styles. Eftpos is also available. To make an appointment, phone the salon on 5472 0888.

On the 9/12/50 he married the love of his life Ivy Maude Woodman in Nambour. They went on to have the following family; John, Rodney, Ian, Gaye and Kathy. The early years as a married couple Ossie and Ivy spent farming at Perwillowen then moving to Woombye taking up share farming, small crops and pineapples for a few years. Ossie always loved working with timber and it was while at Perwillowen he built one of their homes (still lived in by members of the Briggs/ Jefferies family) and

then a beach house at Maroochydore named after Gaye. In 1966 they moved off the farm and into a café/store/takeaway at Eumundi where they stayed through until 1981. In 1975 they brought property on Seib’s Rd and a few years. later, once again Ossie took on building yet another family home, all the while working long hours in the shop. In 1982 Ossie became Cooroy’s first motorcycle postie and it was during this period and much to his grief Ivy passed away at the age of 54 on the 21/05/ 84. He continued on as Cooroy postie through until semi retiring some 71/2 years later. Ossies semi-retirement saw him spending his spare time out at Templetons farm picking Ginger In 1988 he moved to Nambour with his friend and partner of 8 yrs, Rosa. Taking up the wood lathe and travelling. In fact they were in Europe when the big Chernobyl melt down and had their stay extended until given the all clear to

travel by the authorities. Ossie was very community minded and gave freely of himself to many community groups including. Among his achievements he was heavily involved with starting National Fitness at Woombye, Scouts groups at Woombye & Eumundi, Pony clubs at Nambour, Cooroy and Eumundi. He was also one of six founding members of the Eumundi Markets which have gone on to renowned popularity far and wide. He was also Eumundi Historical Society Treasurer for 17 ½ years, 20 years as treasurer at his church as well as 2nd sermon reader for 3 years. On the 13/06/1998 he remarried June Ellen Handes who also was a craft lover, hand making dolls. So Ossie would turn up wooden stands for her to display the dolls on. Sadly June passed away late last year. Not long after, Ossie moved from his Nambour home into Kabara where he spent

the remainder of his retirement until passing peacefully on 26/05/2013. Those that knew Ossie would know these familiar parting words from him, “Thanks for Everything” Ossie is survived by his 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, many of which still live locally. A website in memory of Ossie can be viewed at http://www.heavenaddress.com/OswaldJefferies/440934/

For better… or for worse…

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management WHEN you’re part of a couple, there are plenty of ways to juggle your joint finances and grow your super. If one of you is working less, the partner with the higher income could reduce their tax by making spouse contributions. If your spouse has an assessable income of less than $13,800 for a given financial year, you may be able to claim a tax offset of up to $540 by making up to $3,000 in after-tax contributions to your spouse’s super account. Low income earners may also be able to take advantage of government co-contributions. If you are eligible and make $1,000 of after-tax contributions into super, the government will top up your payments by up to $500, depending on how much you earn. One or both of you could also make salary sacrifice arrangements, althoughthe spouse earning a higher income may be the one in a stronger financial position to do so. Either way, if you allocate more of your pretax salary to go straight into your super, you will pay only 15% (1) tax on the salary sacrificed amount, up to a $25,000 concessional contributions limit (2) . When times get tough However, if your relationship founders, you’ll need to separate your financial arrangements. Super is where many of us hold the bulk of our assets – apart from the family home – so it’s an increasingly important part of divorce negotiations. If the divorce is amicable – you can make a super agreement to divide the super. The ‘non-member spouse’ can: · either receive a new super interest in the same fund; or · transfer their share of the super benefit to another super fund. However if the lawyers become involved,

the Family Law Act allows for super to be split using a court order. The court will take into account the couple’s respective roles in the relationship, how much money they have overall, and each person’s future earning potential, when deciding how the super benefit should be split. Splitting super can affect your tax situation, as lump sum payments and pensions are calculated and taxed separately for members and non-member spouses. So it may be more attractive to look at swapping other assets for super. And don’t forget, you will need to update your will and your beneficiaries, particularly if you have children, to make sure the right people inherit your assets. Get back on track for retirement A divorce can end up leaving you with a reduced retirement nest egg. If you’ve paid some of your super to your former spouse, you could get your long-term investment strategy back on track by: • working out your budget • bringing your super accounts together to reduce fees • taking advantage of super’s tax concessions for • pre-tax contributions • after-tax contributions. And if you’ve received super as part of a divorce settlement, you should think about the most suitable insurance cover and investment mix for you in light of your changed circumstances. If you’re going through a divorce and need financial advice to prepare for your future you should consider seeking professional advice. (1) The government is proposing to double the 15% tax rate on before-tax personal con-

services include

tributions to 30% from 1 July 2012 for individuals earning more than $300,000 pa. As at May 2013, this proposal has not yet been legislated. (2) $25,000 concessional contributions limit applies for the 2012/2013 financial year. Concessional contributions include employer super contributions and personal before-tax contributions, eg salary sacrifice contributions. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706

WITH several serious traffic incidents of late police are targeting life endangering offences in an effort to reduce the road toll. Police will be targeting drivers who constantly disregard double and single continuous white lines painted in the centre of the road. At least one serious accident has occurred lately with the main cause due to one of the drivers not keeping left of double lines leading to a very serious head on crash which very nearly resulted in the death of a child. I recently patrolled several sections of our main hinterland road network and it is very obvious to me that a significant proportion of drivers are cutting corners and bends in the road by crossing the centre lines. In many cases the bends are blind with the view of oncoming traffic obscured so the drivers are taking a gamble that because the road is a quiet country road that there will be no traffic coming and, of course, we all know the result if that gamble does not pay off. On most of the tight bends on Cooroy Belli Creek Road I noted that the lines were faded and worn however on the straighter sections the lines were brighter and not worn. This fact, along with driver complaints of cars constantly cutting corners indicates to me that a good percentage of drivers are risking serious injury or death by pure laziness by cutting blind bends. Council have now repainted many of the worn and faded lines on the blind bends so there can be no excuse for drivers to cross over the centre lines.

Residents and drivers using our hinterland road network are now on notice that police are patrolling these roads with the intention of handing out fines to lazy drivers who can’t be bothered to stay on the correct side of the road. Please pass the message on to your neighbours as I would rather not have to hand out fines but if it means that the risk of someone being killed or seriously injured is reduced then so be it. It could be the life of your loved one that is saved. Still on the issue of traffic enforcement, drivers should be aware of the use of technology in the fight against drivers doing the wrong thing on our roads. Police will be deploying an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Vehicle on the roads around Cooroy in the near future and on a regular basis. This vehicle is a vehicle that automatically reads number plates and instantly displays any problems with the vehicle or owner such as the vehicles registration being out of date or the driver being unlicensed or disqualified by a court. Some of you will be reading this and thinking that “Big Brother” is upon us and that our every movement is now under constant surveillance however this is simply not the case. Police during there mobile patrols often detect drivers who are either unlicensed or unregistered which basically means that people are not covered by there insurance or third party insurance which has massive repercussions to everyone involved in the accident. Drivers who are correctly registered and licensed have

nothing to worry about but in regards the deployment of the ANPR Vehicle but drivers who are still willing to take a chance and drive whilst unlicensed, disqualified or unregistered are again put on notice that the chances of getting caught have now greatly increased so don’t be tempted to do the wrong thing. You are now warned. For those of you using the Cooroy APP you should be aware of recent reports of potential fraudsters targeting rural properties around Cooroy, Pomona and Eumundi under the guise of wanting to repair driveways or trim trees. These people are walking into properties unannounced from the street offering there services which are usually of very poor standard and then using stand over tactics to seek money for this substandard work. We have had two sheds broken into and tools stolen so it may be linked to these people walking into unattended properties so be on your guard and watch out over your neighbours property and report any suspicious behaviour to the local police on 54425030 or dial 000 is it is an emergency.

news Local builder sponsor’s Lachlan’s ride to conquer cancer

COOROY RAG

Don Littler, Ri-con’s Chief Financial Officer helps Lachlan “get on his bike” with a donation of $1,000. SUNSHINE Coast construction company, Ri-con Contractors has given a big push off to Lachlan’s Ride to Conquer Cancer challenge with a donation of $1,000. Lachlan Henbury was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma at the age of 15 and if left untreated, was given just two weeks to live. After 4 months in hospital, Lachie came out the other side alive, healthy and with a changed view on life. Along his journey to

good health, Lachlan met some amazing people who have acted as his inspiration to take part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer challenge, “they took such good care of me, I have decided to give back” he says, preparing for his fundraising event. The Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancel event is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves for a great cause. All you need is motivation, a bike and a helmet. Money raised by taking part will benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, one of Australia’s largest and most successful medical research institutes. Lachlan is spreading the word about the ride in an effort to raise as much money for the cause as he can, “if the little bit of money you help us raise could change just one person’s cancer experience for the better, it would make it all worthwhile,” he said. He shares a thought that reminds us all of how every bit helps “you never know, it could be your $50 that helps find a cure for cancer.” The two day, 200 kilometre cycling adventure begins in Brisbane on 17th August 2013, with an inspiring Opening Ceremony, where those lost to cancer will be remembered and those continuing the fight will be honoured. After winding through some of Queensland’s most beautiful scenery, participants will cross the finish line exhausted, but energised by the amazing impact they will have made in the quest to conquer cancer. To join Ri-con Contractors in their sponsorship efforts, go online and donate now at br13.conquercancer.org.au. For more information on Ri-Con visit www.ricon.net.au.

Hi, I’m Belinda and I would love to train you and your dog. Your dog is an important part of your family and to have a well-trained dog makes him or her a better part of your life. I have owned dogs for many years and believe they add so much joy and security to your life, unfortunately, if they are not trained well, have bad habits or do not view you as ‘the pack leader’ they can cause stress and take away the

enjoyment they otherwise offer. I have studied dog training and undertaken an intensive Dog Obedience Instructors Course through ‘Craig A Murray - The Dog School’. This course has consolidated and expanded my previous study providing me with the necessary skills to help train you and your dog to have a harmonious relationship.

Beginner Obedience Group Classes - This is a five week course, 1 hour every week. Small, well managed classes for dogs 6 months and older. Teach your dog: Stationing, Focus, Heel, Sit, Stay, Drop and Come – return to heel – all on lead. Private In home training - In the privacy of your own home. Ideal for dogs with socialisation problems, jumping up, separation anxiety, over excitement etc. Private lessons are also ideal for owners that are unable to, or prefer not to attend group classes. Your dog will learn: Stationing (calm behavior), Focus, Heel, Sit, Stay, Drop and Come – return to heel – all on lead. Training your dog is an enjoyable and rewarding experience and creates a harmonious, respectful environment for you, your dog and your family. Call Belinda on 0429 461 606 for more information or to book into a class.

Keep afloat with winter pool care

96 percent of pool owners may forgo the importance of regular winter pool care this year and risk significant costs at the start of the swimming season, according to local pool and spa expert Conrad Reed. Mr Reed from PoolWerx said just 40 out of 1000 pool water samples taken by PoolWerx in winter last year registered a healthy

reading. “We discovered only four percent of pools had a healthy pH balance during the winter period last year and just 20 percent were properly chlorinated,” he said. “To avoid these issues this year, we want to encourage pool owners to be more conscious of the financial and health impacts of an untreated pool come the

start of the swimming season.” He said pool owners faced up to $500 to bring an unhygienic pool back to a healthy and safe to use condition. “Fixing a pool that has turned ‘green’ due to flourishing bacteria can come at a significant cost with some types of bacteria hard to remove even after treatment. Increased levels of microorganisms, algae and bacteria also pose serious health risks at a time when people want to start using it. “Ongoing pool care is far more affordable than fixing a pool once there is a major problem. Incorrect water balance over a long period of time can also hinder the warranty of pool equipment through chemical erosion.” He said pool water should be professionally tested regularly during winter and treated when necessary. Just because water is clear doesn’t mean it’s clean. Pool owners should test their pools at least every week to ensure the pool’s pH level is be-

tween 7.2 and 7.6 and the chlorine level at 2-3 PPM. “Special winter algaecides can also be used in the colder months to effectively control algae growth but products vary depending on the size and type of pool, so pool owners should consult a pool technician.” Mr Reed said there were also a number of ways to cut pool running costs in the offseason. “The pool pump and filter only need to run for up to six hours each day unlike summer that requires water circulation up to 12 hours depending on pool size and equipment. The pool timer can also be switched to an off-peak tariff to save on electricity costs. Noosa District celebrated 50 years A KEYSTONE of the 50 year anniversary of Noosa District State High School was a reflection of the history of the school and reunion of past students and staff over the past 50 years. A ‘Meet and Greet’ was held last Friday evening for past and present staff and students to come together and share stories, memories and experiences of their time at Noosa High. The ‘Meet and Greet’ was held in the school’s hospitality area, with the hospitality students preparing and serving a variety of canapés. The school’s birthday was formally commemorated last Saturday, with an official ceremony featuring music and performances celebrating the past 50 years; speeches by past student Peter Wellington MLA, the school captain, the school Principal and a letter from Prime Minister Julia Gillard; and the burial of a time capsule. The celebrations were spearheaded by Head of Student Services and past student, Elizabeth Garbacz and school Principal Chris Roff described her efforts in organising the event as “heroic”. ‘Reunion Central’ located in the school’s H Block area was used throughout the day as a place where past students could come together for photographs and roll calls. A historical display was set up in the school library, featuring old school uniforms, photographs, school maga-

zines, sports trophies and awards and other memorabilia. Students enjoyed a range of rides, bands (featuring the talents of past and present students and teachers), performances and food stalls. Faculty areas showcased the depth of talent within the school through workshops and demonstrations held throughout the day. Noosa District State High School staff and students are proud of the school’s history, which demonstrates high achievement and the importance of the school in the local community. The school library have put together a number of historical displays. Past students and teachers donated school magazines, exercise books, awards, school uniforms and memorabilia, which provide an unique insight into life at Noosa District State High School over the past 50 years. Teacher librarian Leanne Tanner enjoyed putting the displays together and collating all the materials. “The library display took a lot of effort by many as we had many donations including old photos and uniforms. Trophies were taken out of storage and polished,” Ms Tanner said. Students were fascinated to learn about the history of their school, with many glad that the only use for the cane is the part it plays in the library’s historical display.

JUNIOR & SENIOR $1000 PRIZE MONEY Auditions will be held prior to the event.

WOW, what a night! 200+ people turned out to celebrate the Cooran Acoustic Night’s 25th anniversary on the 11th May. “It may have been ‘acoustic’ but we almost blew the roof off!” said Acoustic Night organiser Liz Capelin. The chalkboard was overflowing with talent, the delicious kitchen sold out and King Street was strewn with kit bags and folk keen to share their music and stories spanning a generation. The diversity of instruments, agegroups, experience and style was astounding. Those who stayed till the end were treated to some VERY amazing singer-song writers (and one Italian opera!) including Andrea Kerwin, Jimmy Davis and musical family the McKinneys. The Pomona Community Choir and another jolly group ‘Sing from the Heart’ saw the stage at vocal and standing capacity. It was a pleasure to hear some amazing performances confide after their sets, “that was my first time singing in public!” Thanks to the Cooran Hall committee for all their support, Gympie Musicland, Windelf and Music at Noosa for the generous lucky-door prizes, all the volunteers and those who packed the house and supported each artist as they shared their gifts. The next Cooran Acoustic Night will be on Saturday June 15th from 7pm in the Cooran Hall.

Letter to the editor I WRITE in response to the recent comments from Nationals Leader Warren Truss regarding Federal investment in the Bruce Highway (1/05/13). In April this Federal Labor Government released a plan for a better, safer Bruce Highway. The Queensland Government asked for $4 billion spread over ten years for a range of priority upgrades; we agreed to provide $4.1 billion. In response, the State’s peak motoring body, the RACQ, called it a “significant announcement” and “a breakthrough after decades of campaigning for a game changing increase in funding for the Bruce.” But importantly, this funding adds to the investment we have already made since being first elected in 2007, taking Federal Labor’s total commitment to the Highway to an unprecedented $5.7 billion. If Mr Truss genuinely thinks current funding levels are inadequate then he must have been beside himself with rage during the period of the Howard Government. The fact is we have so far committed more than four times the $1.3 billion they spent on this Highway during their twelve long years in office. And already we have completed an extensive package of works, including:

duplicating the Douglas Arterial; upgrading the southern approaches to Sarina; erecting a new, higher bridge over the Isis River; duplicating Section A between Cooroy and Curra; resurfacing the Nambour Bypass; eliminating 63 notorious black spots; building 12 new and upgraded rest stops; and installing 11 additional overtaking lanes. All these projects were promised, funded and delivered by this Federal Labor Government. So my question to the LNP is a simple one: why were none of these much needed and long talked about projects completed during the twelve long years of the Howard Government? After all, they were the highest taxing government in our nation’s history and Mr Truss was its transport minister. It’s because they only care about this road when they’re in opposition but just as quickly ignore it once they’re elected to office and have control of the roads budget. As recent history has shown, Federal Labor always delivers more for the Bruce Highway than the LNP. ANTHONY ALBANESE Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister

Will this be Kin Kin’s last stand?

THE notion of governments at any level being elected to govern on behalf of the people has descended into a complete farce. The pending decision by Sunshine Coast Regional Council, in concert with the Queensland State Government Depart-

ment of Environment and Heritage Protection, will effectively give carte blanche authority to Neilsens Quality Gravel to discharge contaminants into the Noosa River catchment from the Kin Kin Quarry. To add pain to the misery of the Kin Kin

Y L K E E W S L A I C SPE

community, a town of 700 people in the Noosa hinterland, the Council proposes to instruct Neilsens that all haulage of rock and gravel must be via the Pomona Kin Kin Rd, the main access road for most of the community, and a road which is in such a poor state of repair residents watch potholes and road subsidence appear before their very eyes. Much of the road, which will have up to 200 truck and dog movements a day carrying 34 tonne loads, is too narrow to even have a central white line. Continuing the descent into farce for these residents, the Pomona Kin Kin Rd has not one, not two, but three one-lane bridges that these massive trucks and dogs must negotiate on each inward and outward journey, a journey they share with school buses. Residents are so frightened many have resorted to fitting cameras in their vehicles to record other road users

flagrantly disobeying road laws. To cap it off, the State Government is on record as saying that the price tag of $72 million to upgrade the road to a condition suitable to carry this heavy traffic load is simply unaffordable. How did we ever arrive at a place where a single company can appear to apply the threat of legal action to the disadvantage and distress of the very people who elect council to act on their behalf? But it is not only the Council and the state Department of Main Roads which should hang their heads in shame at the way this community is being treated. The inappropriate, some might say cynical use of the word PROTECTION in the state government’s newly named environment department gives little comfort to a community that has been battling with this department, in its various guises, for the past two decades. In the latest disgraceful act in the saga it would

appear Council is being pressured by the quarry operator to pass Sediment Control plans prior to the DEHP settling on their own requirements in this regard, so that a new ERA can be issued. According to correspondence between the Council and DEHP, that permit has been more than a year in the making because the operator has not been co-operating with the state government officers. So, where will Kin Kin’s last stand be? Will we follow in the footsteps of Custer, or the Alamo, or, if the residents pray hard enough, can we expect that all politicians, not just the genuine ones who do care, will begin to understand that they are elected on our behalf – to support the ambitions of the majority, not the greed of the few. Or will we need to resort to chaining our families to the posts of a one-lane bridge as a final, despairing act? Anita Poten

Noosa District SHS Interact Club

HARDWARE TRUE VALUE HOT DEALS

THE Noosa District State High School Interact Club planted a tree to mark World Environment Day on June 5. The native tree was kindly donated by Landcare. The Interact students have decided to continue to commemorate World Environment Day each year with the planting of a tree in the school grounds. Students were reminded of the significance of the day through notices in Home Group rolls since the beginning of the week, stating facts about food wastage, production and consumption, which is the theme of this year’s World Environment Day. Today’s fact is: Did you know that the global food production occupies 25% of all habitable land; is responsible for 70% of fresh water consumption, 80% of deforestation, and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions? Global food production is the largest single driver of biodiversity loss and land-use change. Home Group teachers encouraged their students to reflect on the food they consume each day and the amount they throw away after each meal and the students were reminded that small changes, such as sourcing local produce, makes a big difference. It is hoped that lessons learned about environmental awareness this week, help the students of today make wise decisions for the sake of our planet’s future.

Relive the ‘Colours of the Carnivale’ A NEW exhibition ‘Colours of the Carnivale’ at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre from Sunday 16 June showcases the colour and creativity that is the Australian Body Art Carnivale. Manager of Discover Eumundi Wendy Birrell says the exhibition features all the entries and winning images from this year’s Australian Body Art Carnivale photographic competition, in both photo print and digital categories which has been sponsored by Canon and Camera House Noosa this year. “The Carnivale really is a photographer’s dream, with so much action and vibrancy at every turn,” she says. “For those that came to the event, seeing the images brings back the memories, and for those that have never visited the event,

the exhibition gives a real insight into what must surely be one of the most colourful events on the Coast” “There’s also a People’s Choice category, so all visitors to the exhibition have a chance to vote on the images entered in the competition that appeal most to them,” Wendy says. “We’ve put together a display of prints as well as a digital slide show of images from the whole Carnivale that really captures the breadth of talent showcased at the ever-growing community art event.” “We were fortunate to acquire the 2013 winning Car Bonnet Art piece, painted by Tamera Dowling, at this year’s Carnivale, Wendy says. “And we’ve also added an ‘All Dolled Up’ doll to our collection deco-

rated by seven year old Lotus Houston – in keeping with this year’s Best of Oz theme”. The ’Colours of the Carnivale’ exhibition opens Sunday 16 June, and will be in the old police cells exhibition space at Discover Eumundi until Monday 9 July. If you would like to attend the exhibition opening and photographic awards ceremony, please RSVP by phoning Discover Eumundi on 5442 8762 or email Wendy at manager@discovereumundi.com.au Visit www.australianbodyart.com.au for more info and to sign up to receive eNewsletters in the lead-up to next year’s event. IT was an inspiring weekend for almost 5000 people who found themselves at one of Australia’s premier green art festivals, Sunshine Coast Council’s 2013 Floating Land. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the number of participants and spectators to the region in the first days of the 10-day long festival are sure to once again make a significant contribution to the region. “The smorgasbord of workshops and cultural events kicked off last Friday morning with the Balance-Unbalance Interna-

tional Conference at The J in Noosa, where panelists used art as a catalyst to explore intersections between nature, science, technology and society,” Cr McKay said. “This was followed by the Judith Wright Tribute Evening at the Apollonian Hotel, which paid homage to the famous poet and her works.” Crowds swelled on Saturday as artists set up their installations and workshops at various satellite locations around the Coast before gathering at Boreen Point for the ‘Wunya’ or Welcome Ceremony, featuring local Gubbi Gubbi

Cooroora CANINE CLIPPING

Dancers and the Attakkalari Dance Company from Bangalore in India. “The Opening Ceremony is always one of the festival’s most popular events and we were delighted to see so many families and enthusiasts converge at Boreen Point for the celebrations,” Cr McKay said. “The feedback we’ve received so far is that people are delighted by the variety of things to see and do, whether it’s learning traditional methods of weaving, building canoes, enjoying dance performances or listening to poetry and music.”

THE Imperial Hotel in Eumundi has officially changed hands, heralding a new chapter for the iconic Queenslander pub. The new owners are a team of Eumundi locals including Michael and Caroline Arnett, owners of the Bohemian Bungalow. Manager of The Imperial Hotel Jason Cox is excited about the next chapter for the hotel, and was only too pleased to officially

‘Butt out’ for the sake of your sight SMOKING greatly increases your chances of developing an “age-related” eye disease such as macular degeneration or cataracts. Local optometrists Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy tell us that researchers have found a direct correlation between the number of years of smoking, and the number of cigarettes smoked each day, with the incidence of age-related macular degeneration. “Butting out” can help save eyesight according to recent studies that indicate smokers quadruple their risk of developing agerelated macular degeneration and double the risk of developing cataracts compared to non-smokers. “Smoking’s effects on your vision are cumulative” Heather says,” The more you smoke, the worse your vision might become. The effects of continuing to smoke cannot be undone by simply eating more nutritious foods or taking more antioxidant supplements.” “Since smoking’s effects continue to accumulate, the only certain thing you can do to help your vision is to quite smoking”, Jenny adds. “We know that it’s not easy, and you’re going to need help, but the rewards, such as continuing good vision, or a

possible halt to visual loss are definitely worth it.” If you have macular degeneration, in addition to stopping smoking, you should eat fish at least twice a week, eat plenty of dark leafy green vegetables, exercise and wear proper UV protection in the sun. “For gold standard diagnosis and monitoring of macular degeneration, as well as other eye conditions such as glaucoma, we are pleased to announce that we now have the latest technology in our Cooroy practice – OCT or Optical Coherence Tomography” adds Jenny, “The OCT is a technologically sophisticated instrument that is used to obtain detailed 3 dimensional scans of the layers within the retina providing early detection of abnormalities down to the micron level .” Macular degeneration is Australia’s leading cause of blindness and affects one person in four over the age of 60. It is even more prevalent in people over the age of 90, with nearly two thirds developing the condition and a quarter suffering from vision loss. optometry@cooroy is at 62 Maple Street Cooroy. One of the community organisations recognised was Cooroy’s very own Cooroy Family Support Centre. The Cooroy Family Support Centre has for 21 years opened its doors to provide refuge, support and solace to the families for Cooroy and surrounding districts that have been affected by domestic violence and family disruption. “It was a pleasure to be able to recognise the work of this wonderful organisation,” said Mr Wellington.

Do you need a blood test? Visit Coastal Pathology LOCAL company Coastal Pathology comes to Cooroy and surrounding communities with the opening of a new collection centre in COOROY located at 44 Maple Street. • Minimum waiting times • Testing bulk billed • All pathology request form accepted • Local company • Experienced collectors • Fast friend service Coastal Pathology is the only independently owned medical testing laboratory on the Sunshine Coast, and is pleased to announce the opening of a new collection centre in Cooroy (in addition to existing centres at Noosaville, Mt Coolum, Caloundra and Buderim). Coastal Pathology provides broad range of local testing services for patients and the medical community throughout the region. Incredible as it may seem, Coastal Pathology is the only medical pathology laboratory on the Sunshine Coast that is actually owned and operated by fully qualified pathologists. Coastal Pathology was established in 2005 by Drs Joe Gatto and Tim McNamara who have over 40 years combined pathology experience. Both are actively involved in all aspects of the day to day operations of the Coastal Pathology laboratory in King Street, Buderim. Commenting on the company, Dr Joe Gatto said, “Our clients appreciate the convenience of being able to contact us easily and directly, rather than having to deal with unknown people in distant labo-

ratories that are processing thousands of tests on a daily basis. They know we are able to respond quickly to particular test requests and only too pleased to discuss results and answer any questions or concerns about a pathology investigation. This is what clearly sets us apart from other diagnostic services operating on the coast.” Coastal Pathology aims to provide a comprehensive range of local testing services that includes 90% of the tests that most medical professionals typically request. These tests are supported by diagnostic pathology expertise in the major areas of Histology, Cytology, Microbiology, Haematology and Chemical Pathology throughout the Sunshine Coast region, providing a competitor to the existing large corporate pathology companies. Serving your best interests, Coastal Pathology provides a seamless service to patients and medical colleagues, as we collect all required samples and deliver results in the usual manner. However, the vast majority of testing is conducted locally. So, we are able to deliver faster turnaround times, and we’re also doing our bit for the environment, by not transporting specimens to, far away laboratories. We continue, as we have always done, to bill Medicare directly (“bulk billing”) for all outpatient Medicare and DVA cardholders. So come and see our experienced collectors for fast friendly service at one of our conveniently located collection centres.

Caitlin selected for U18 National Youth Touch Championships Noosa District SHS Year 10 student Caitlin Wark has just returned from the Queensland 15 Years Girls Touch Football carnival in Roma as a member of the winning Sunshine Coast Regional team. The Sunshine Coast girls convincingly won the state final 9 – 1 against a more fancied Brisbane Metropolitan East team. This was Caitlin’s first schoolgirls state trials carnival and she certainly rose to the challenge by scoring 6 tries over the 3 day / 8 game carnival, with two of these coming in the grand-final. During her time with the Sunshine Coast girls’ team, Caitlin was lucky to be coached by Mr Paul Cobham who is also the Queensland coach. Caitlin stated that she learnt a lot about the game from such an experience coach during their 45 hours of training in the three month lead up to the carnival. “The intensity in defence and the ice bath leg recovery are something that I won’t forget”, stated Caitlin. Caitlin has been playing touch for many years and is a valued member of the Noosa District SHS girl’s team and regularly plays in the Noosa Touch Association A Grade ladies and mixed competitions. She has also played representative touch with the Sunshine Coast Pineapples team and she is off to the U18 National Youth Championships later in the year. Sport_Touch

2013 HAS already been a big year for the Pomona, Cooroy & District AFL club. Back on 19th May the club president Bill Magin played his 700th senior game. A local footy identity made national news for this great achievement, thank you for everyone involved for making it a great day for Bill. This has also been the year the front of the club got a face lift, many of you may have noticed the new verandah being put on the front of the club to give people a place to stand on, have a beer and watch a game of footy in a nit of shade (as well as providing much needed shade and shelter to the canteen down below). Now following on from this we have another major milestone in the Demons history. The club is 40 years

old! From its humble beginnings on the Pomona show grounds all those years ago it has come on a long journey to where it sits now on Pomona Connection Rd. There have been many characters in its 40 years and many major milestones. All of these the club wishes to celebrate with a big 40th bash.

The celebration will take place on Saturday night 06th July at the Pomona Hall. It is going to be a fancy sit down affair with a number of guest speakers from the club’s past and present re-living the history of the club. So if you have ever been part of the greatest club on the Sunshine Coast please buy a ticket, come along and enjoy the night! For further information on the 40th please contact Bill Magin on 0435 746 822 or email the club at pomonademons@hotmail.com
