Festival of Water at Lake Macdonald

June 13, 2012

Not my fave

I’M not ashamed to say that my taste in music runs to country … Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Don Williams etc. So when I had to drive my son’s car to work the other day and he had his ipod plugged in I thought I’d show off to the girls when I pulled into the office with his sub-woofer shaking the car, feeling very young and groovy. Fast forward to two hours later, when I jumped in it to go to town, forgetting the subwoofer was still on and was seconds from calling ‘000’ with suspected heart failure, when it belted out a “tune” as I was reversing. Yes, nothing speaks generation gap louder than Doof Doof. Every generation has it’s own music, fashion quirks and language that parents attempt to keep up with but I’m fairly certain that my parents never had to Google the Urban Dictionary so we could have a conversation. But then again, when I think back to my teenage years I don’t recall having too many conversations with them at all. Damn my children and their incessant friendship. LOL … So there you have it Plugged in, paramedics and parents. Music without any singing… Not my fave! The 8th annual Noosa Festival of Water will showcase some of our regions finest features on Sunday 24th June at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre. Many of the attributes of the adjacent Noosa and Great Sandy Biospheres are highlighted at the Festival, through a range of entertaining

and educational activities aimed at the whole family. Lake Macdonald provides a stunning backdrop to the Festival and is also the location for a number of water based activities. Continued on page 3

The good old days – not really One often hears some oldie say, with a wistful sigh, “They were the good old days, when I was young and spry, “But these days have gone to the dogs, society has fallen apart, “Civilisation has lost its way, it surely breaks my heart”. “The world would be a better place, in many many ways, “If we could just bring back, all those good old days. Well, I lived in those “good old days”, and they really weren’t that good, And their romantic reputation, is a little misunderstood, Would you like a Depression, with its poverty and despair, When your world was totally empty, and no one seemed to care, Would you like to live without your fridge, hot water, a microwave, With your wife labouring endlessly, a virtual house bound slave.

No washing machine, no electric stove, vacuum clean, no car, No handy GPS, to tell you where you are, No electric jug, delicatessen, supermarkets that never close, Frozen meals, detergents, dog foods, even pantyhose! No television, no DVD, computer, E-mail, or a mobile phone, Air conditioning, Facebook, ATM, a credit card of your own. Think of the children getting polio, the dreaded whooping cough, Measles, mumps, diphtheria, with no vaccine to ward them off, No medical miracles, organ transplants, health insurance, no Medicare, No Flying Doctor, no life saving evacuations by air, Mind you, it wasn’t totally awful, some of the good old days were good, People seemed more contented, they lived in a quieter neighbourhood. Everyone did more walking, national obesity was unknown, And there was always a human to answer your telephone, Bureaucrats were not so numerous, politicians travelled by train, And governments tried to keep their spending in a tighter rein. So let’s just get on with it, and be thankful we are truly blessed, Looking back is futuile, the world has inevitably progressed, Especially in this country, we are fortunate beyond measure, Our good fortune is God-given, a fortune we must treasure. Noosa Festival of Water 2012

Renown Sunshine Coast fibre artist, Kris Martin will be at the 2012 Noosa Festival of Water on Sunday 24th June to teach the art of weaving using environmental weeds such as the Cat’s Claw Creeper vine. From Page 1 One of the Festival’s most popular attractions is the free boat trips, which ferry people across the Lake to Mary River Cod Park where tours of the Gerry Cook Hatchery and the Water Treatment Plant can be taken. Jump onto a Vagabond sailing boat and learn to sail with the experienced crew from the Noosa Yacht Club. Back over the other side of the Lake near the Boat Ramp, experts from the Lake Borumba Fish Stocking group will teach budding anglers how to catch fish at the Kids Fishing Clinic. All fishing gear and bait is supplied. Fish species in the Lake include Bass, Yellowbelly, Saratoga and the endangered Mary River Cod. Noosa Stand Up Paddle (SUP) will also be at this year’s Festival, offering the opportunity to learn SUP in the calm waters of the Lake so bring

your bathers and give it a go, or for those that prefer sitting down and paddling, leant to paddle a canoe with the instructors from Recreation Queensland. All equipment is provided, and its all free! Musical entertainment in the Amphitheatre will feature young dynamic group Caitlyn Shadbolt and Aiming High who have been making a name for themselves since placing 3 rd in the Battle of the Bands at Tamworth earlier this year. You can also catch the Tapper Girls, Blue Monday and Lyndon Davies and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers. Keep an eye out for the RockCote entry box in the Amphitheatre, where a $450 voucher for environmentally friendly interior house coatings from local award winning company, RockCote is up for grabs. Remember to fill in an entry and place it in the box to win. The winning entry will be

drawn at 2 pm. In the Botanic Gardens, Arting About will have a brand new “biosphere” mural for arty kids to decorate with some local iconic species. While the kids are producing their works of art, watch Permaculture Trainer Tim Lang, who will be demonstrating the preparation of a dinner garden. Or join Weaving Wizard, Kris Martin for a Weaving Workshop where he will be teaching how to make attractive and useful household items using vine weed Cat’s Claw Creeper. Cost for the Weaving workshop is $20 per person and spaces are limited so bookings are required for this activity. A range of Australian native animals will be on display with Martin Fingland and some of his Geckoes Wildlife collection. Learn about Australian snakes and reptiles from Allan Burnett who will be pro-

viding awareness demonstrations on the characteristics and behaviours of reptiles throughout the day. You can even have a date with a Dingo and representatives of Save the Fraser Island Dingos, who are encouraging people to learn more about the plight of Fraser Island’s Dingo population. Community Group displays include the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, Land for Wildlife, the Noosa Integrated Catchment group, Wilvos, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, the Burnett Mary Regional Group, Noosa Biosphere Limited and Noosa Landcare, who will have two free trees for Noosa Biosphere residents who bring a current rate notice. You can also bring a sample of your dam, creek or bore water and have it tested by the Mary River Catchment Committee. And getting to the

Festival will be easier than ever this year, with TravelSmart providing a Carbon Smart Shuttle bus from Cooroy, that connects with Sunbus Service 631 which leaves Noosa Junction at 10.20 am. Or park at Cooroy and catch the bus from Opal St at 10.55 am. A smaller courtesy bus will also be provided to help people get from the parking areas around the Festival. A choice of refreshments will be available at the Festival or bring a picnic and enjoy lunch in the gardens. news Entries now open for the My Tree Photographic Competition

COOROY RAG

ENTRANTS are invited to submit a digital photograph of a tree in the Sunshine Coast Region that has significance in their lives with up to 200 words telling the judges why that tree is important to them. Ideas for reasons why trees may be significant could be: it’s a local landmark tree; a family “heirloom” tree, a tree connected to a personal or family event; it was given for a gift; it was planted for a special reason - the possibilities are endless. The aim of the competition is to encourage entrants to “show and tell” about their significant tree. While the quality of the photographs will be taken into consideration, equal balance will be given by the judges to the supporting text and reasons for the choice of the tree. You don’t even

have to live on the Sunshine Coast to enter – but the tree does! A project of the Eumundi Historical Foundation and managed through its Heritage and Visitor Information Centre – Discover Eumundi – this year’s competition looks to be bigger and better than ever with new categories to enter, some great cash prizes and new supporters in the Sunshine Coast Council through the Environment Levy, the Original Eumundi Markets and Berkelouw Books Eumundi. Discover Eumundi manager Wendy Birrell commented that “when we ran this competition two years ago we were overwhelmed by the response – everyone loves trees and this concept was embraced by the community with over 100 entries. I feel it is

going to be even bigger this year as the entries are starting to come in already and I would encourage children to enter or for families to work together on an entry.” Entrant’s images and stories will be compiled into a digital book which will be available to read online and a printed book that can be ordered online is planned. For more details, guidelines and entry forms got to www.mytreesunshine coast.com or phone Discover Eumundi on 07 5442 8762. If you require further details or wish to take photos of the display we currently are running of the 2010 entries and winning images and stories please phone Wendy Birrell 07 5442 8762 or mobile 0438 118 452 or email manager@discover eumundi.com.au

Council retains sustainable vision More prize money for Art Festival

COUNCIL will continue to strive for the Sunshine Coast to become to Australia’s most sustainable region. Mayor Mark Jamieson said councillors have agreed to retain the vision as it captures the key priorities for council for the next four years. “To become Australia’s most sustainable region—vibrant, green, diverse, is a worthy goal – one we are all keen to achieve,” Mayor Jamieson said. “We need to strengthen the economy, protect the environment, and cherish the character of our communities. “The word sustainable captures everything we want to do; a sustainable economy, a sustainable environment and sustainable communities. “That means delivering an economy that not only creates jobs but careers – so our children don’t have to leave

town when they leave home. “That means protecting the environment so the next generation gets to enjoy the region’s lifestyle just as much as we do. That means maintaining our community of communities – so the region keeps its unique character. “Fundamentally, we want to deliver a vibrant community, a green environment and a diverse economy. “We’re proud to build on the solid foundations of the previous council, while also providing our own take on how to achieve the vision. “It was a great achievement to be named the second most environmentally sustainable region in the country – this council will strive for similar success across all areas: environment, community, and economy.”

THE annual Mary Valley Art Festival is going from strength to strength as it notches up its 12th quality show from July 12-15 at the Imbil Public Hall. The total prize money had topped $5300, with the open section first prize now $1200 making the award one of the richest in the Region. Everyone is invited to “come out to play” in the Mary Valley by visiting the exhibition, purchasing some fabulous art and enjoying the countryside while you are there. The People’s Choice Awards is at 1pm on July 15 at the close of the festival, when the favourite entry by popular vote is revealed. This is a complimentary entry, wine and cheese event sponsored by Borumba Deer Park. Inquiries to Jan Watt on 0488 969408 or email janwattcontact@gmail.com

COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUET to the Police. Great to see an unmarked car select a few drivers in Garnet St for a touch-up! It’s to be hoped they stick around and they’ll be catching about every second car doing well over the posted 40 kmh limit! BRICKBATS to the person or persons who not only stole a large trolley from The Salvation Army Family Store but also stole the rubbish bin on Tuesday 22nd May. Just remember ‘what goes around comes around.’ It’s bad enough that you are a thief but to steal from The Salvos is a really low act! BRICKBATS to whoever broke into the Pony Club. Stealing from a community group is such a low act. BOUQUET to the lady from Belli Park who braved the traffic in Myall Street to rescue my handbag and i-pad. My very grateful thanks, so pleased to know there are honest people around. BRICKBATS to drivers attempt to reverse park in Maple Street, don’t get their vehicle in straight on the first attempt so just drive straight back out into traffic to have another go. At least have a look to your right to see if anything’s coming!

news Grants boost community projects COMMUNITY groups across the region will receive funding for 82 projects after Sunshine Coast Council today endorsed $541,175 for Community Grants. Mayor Mark Jamieson said council’s funding supports a diverse range of projects including youth activities, multicultural festivals, facility upgrades and community gardens. “The Community Grants Program is about helping all those volunteers who contribute so much to the region,” Cr Jamieson said. “Volunteers are the people who make our community so vibrant, without them a lot of great things on the Coast simply wouldn’t happen. “These grants recognise that effort – and help them to get on with the job of helping to

make the Coast a great place to live.” The Grants Program provides funding for projects in seven categories – community development, cultural development, economic development, environment, festive season activities, heritage and history, and sport, recreation and healthy living. Some of our more local beneficiaries include: Federal Memorial Hall $7500; Fusion Sunshine Coast $6000; Cooroor Woodworkers Club Inc $7328; Pomona Progress Art Tourism Inc $7500; Kenilworth Artist Run Initiative KARI $4050; The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Inc $5000; Real Food Festivals $12,000; Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Eumundi $7150; The Trustee for Eumundi Historical Foundation $3278; Mimburi Upper

TOM is accepting from John a set of bench mounted scales to assist him with his camp fire wood project for Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled. In the photo you can see the 3-off types of firewood packages that will soon be available at various outlets on the coast. Tom was struggling with a spring balance and basket. It was very clumsy set up. So he asked around for an easier set of scales he could use. These scales will make the job of packaging a lot easier. All proceeds from the wood sales will go to SCRDA. SCRDA would also like to thank Andrew Bowden and staff of Qld Survey Pegs P/L. QSP are generously supplying SCRDA with a box trailer of off cuts a week. After the photo opportunity Tom was heading off to sort and pack firewood along with fellow SCRDA volunteers Bruce and Warren. The hardwood offcuts are sold in 12kg bags and Kindle wood is sold in 5kg bags. No need for log splitting as the wood is ideal for both inside and outside fire places. Whether you’re looking to buy a business or sell your own, it’s important to conduct your own research and get independent advice from a business valuer or broker. Essentially there are four common valuation methods. Asset valuation The value of a business is determined by adding up the value of its assets and subtracting liabilities. It tells you what the business would be worth if it were closed down today and its assets sold off, but it doesn’t take into account the ability of those assets to generate revenue in the future. For that reason, it may understate the true value of the business. This method also doesn’t include a value for goodwill. Goodwill is the difference between the true value of a business and the value of its net assets. It can be crucial to the value of retail and service-based businesses. Capitalised future earnings When you buy a business, you’re not only buying its assets but also the right to all profits that business might generate. Capitalising future earnings is the most common method used to value small businesses. The method looks at the rate of return on investment (ROI) that you can expect to get from the business. • Work out the average net profit of the business over the last three years using its profit-and-loss statements, adjusting profit for one-off expenses or other irregular items each year. • Decide the annual rate of return you’re looking for (e.g. 20%). There are no rules about the number you choose, except higher

risk should give higher returns. Compare the business with other investment opportunities. You can also look at the rate of return that similar businesses in your industry achieve. • Divide net profits by the rate of return to determine the value of the business, then multiply by 100. Earnings multiple Multiply the business’ earnings before interest and tax by your selected multiple. The multiple you choose will depend on the industry and the growth potential of the business. A service-based business might be valued at as little as one year’s earnings, while an established business with sustainable profits might sell for as much as six times earnings. Comparable sales Whatever other valuation method you use, you should also look at prices for recent sales of similar businesses. It makes sense to know what is happening in the market you’re interested in. If you have any questions about any form your business or finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigoadelaide.com.au. With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington GAMBLING funds aid community: District schools and community groups have been successful in achieving much needed funding through the last round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. The Cooloolabin Hall and Nambour and District Netball Association both achieved funding to install solar systems to ease power costs. Other funding that came to the area: Nambour Community Centre - $2,225 toward IT equipment; Nambour Special School - $31,800 toward a playground; Nambour & District Tennis Association $35,000 for court upgrade; Blackall Range Independent School - $16,000 toward air conditioning and electricity upgrades; Lions Emergency Accommodation Centre - $12,290 toward whitegoods and AV equipment; Kenilworth Sports and Swimming Pool Assoc - $19,100 toward training equipment. Nominate local achievers: One of the things I am always in awe of when I attend community meetings and functions in this district is the number of people who give tirelessly to their community. I encourage everyone in this community to look around at those people in their local school, group, organisation, workplace or committee that go above and beyond in their roles in this community, and nominate them for an award in the recently announced Regional Achievement and Community Awards. Awards will be made in six categories: Business and Employment; Environment and Landcare; Regional Service; Community of the Year; Youth Leadership; Events and Tourism. I have information and nomination forms available in my Nambour office, or visit www.awardsaustralia.com to make an online nomination. Entries close on August 17. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting day in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, July 5 from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 5441 6933.

Pictured: Dennis Bonnell, Dane Dwyer, Dean Christensen, Glen Duncan, Geoff Linde, Lou Bennett. Absent: Brad Ensbey, Darren Knowles, Ben Christensen, Trent Dwyer. MEMBERS of the Cooroy Auxiliary Firefighters received their ‘Commissioner Unit Commendation’, for their involvement in the boxing day fire in Tewantin last Tuesday. The presentation was made by the commissioner at Noosa Fire Station. While Qeensland Fire Service does not want to be disrespectful to the Golinski family by focussing on the event again, it is appropriate for these boys to be recognised for what they

did on that day. Most of them have been doing this for years now and have all dealt with some horrific incidents over the years. While they are trained and supported in what they do, they still are family men who leave their day jobs and families whatever time of the day their pagers go off to attend these incidents. They have a great respect for one another and are all great mates.

‘Environment’ the theme for 2012 Reality Bites TWO bright young things and one wise elder will speak to young people during Reality Bites festival. Selected authors from the Reality Bites literary festival program will now be inspiring young writers in a series of talks and workshops. Organisers in partnership with Noosa District High School have made Reality a reality for students this year. Because of commitments to sport and part time jobs, young people find it difficult to go to weekend events, so we’re taking the authors to them. The theme this year is ‘environment’, and who better to speak to the upcoming generation about their environment than Emeritus Professor Ian Lowe. His new book, Bigger of Better sets out exactly what a larger population will cost Australia in terms of its natural resources and the environment.

Anna Rose will present a school assembly talk about climate change. Anna is the inspirational co-founder of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and the 2009 Environment Minister’s joint ‘Young Environmentalist of the Year’. She recently appeared in the ABC documentary ‘I can change your mind about climate change’ and her book Madlands is about journey around the world with former Liberal Party powerbroker Nick Minchin in tow. Then, on a slightly different tack, national rising star and local boy made good, Benjamin Law will present and author talk to a large group of students at the school. Benjamin will talk about fitting in and being part of a social environment. Ben grew up on the Sunshine Coast and knows all about feeling awkward and different, growing up Asian in Australia. Ben’s memoir

The Family Law is a hilarious romp though his coming of age, but underpinned with his mother’s private tragedy of loss of family and friends through the experience of migration. That book catapulted him into a whole new realm of possibilities for his writing. Ben is an excellent role model for young writers wondering about embarking on a career in the media. In addition, the inaugural Mark Tredinnick True Story Award will be presented at the Festival Launch. The essay award is for young writers and organised through the school. Young entrants should ask their teacher for an entry form, and go the festival website for further details. Reality Bites runs 26-29 July 2012. I confess I am a recent resident, having purchased our property within a few kilometers of Cooroy a mere 15 years ago. And, since then, I have witnessed the steady growth of population in our region to the point where it is no longer so quiet of a morning, one could play cricket in the main streets until lunch hour. Nowadays, one is foutunate to find a parking space within walking distance of their destination. And, I agree, this growth in traffic certainly warrants close attention to proper driving procedures while staying within speed limits. So I am a firm supporter of our police force endorsing safety in our humble town. However, every time I have stopped by our police station to raise any issue of concern about hoons or other safety matters along our stretch of road, the police station was closed. Okay, ... this is Cooroy. Sometimes the clock at the roundabout isn’t working properly. So the cop shop is closed. No big deal... But today, in Cooroy, I noted a police officer emerge from an unmarked vehicle in uniform to book some (traffic) offender on Garnet Street. This upset me. (And since I was not the person to be booked you may well ask why.) Yes, we want our streets and walkways to be safe. But why do we need some cop in an unmarked vehicle perfoming what is within the province of our local constabulary? Yes, we who live here cherish the fairgo and say g’day attitude that makes Cooroy special, but does this

warrant the invasion of what amounts to under-cover behaviour by some cop making points in our little town when he would be better employed with that vehicle GETTING FAR MORE TICKETS on the Bruce Highway? This driver is sick and tired of the hoons tail-gating when stays within the limit - and in the left lane! There used to be patrol vehicles on the highway, under bridges and elsewhere between Cooroy and Yandina. Has anyone seen one recently? Over the past month? What is this cop doing in quiet Cooroy where the offense may be trickling over the 60kph limit? Or turning without singalling? Or not settling the seat belt firmly in place before leaving the parking lot. Driver in Cooroy ARE courteous. They don’t need some jerk - pardone me! police officer to make them otherwise. If anyone can tell me who allocates this bloke to Cooroy , maybe we can clarify to that authority his time and energy can be better used elseswhere - like the Bruce Highway. As a fomer patrol officer in New Guinea I am, and will always be, a firm suporter of our police officers perfroming their duty. But the mere notion of spending our taxpayer funds on some cop in an unmarked vehicle lurking about the streets of Cooroy does not sit well. Doesn’t he have something better to do? Like doing what police officers are paid to do? David Haviland Cooroy

Warm up this Winter

It’s hard to see in this photo but Steve Hall is pointing to the small dot (Venus) crossing the sun which was projected onto the Fruit Bowl’s wall via the mirror he had set up in front of store.

NASA was in Alice Springs for the once in about every hundred years astrological event “Venus Crossing”, but here in Cooroy we only needed to go to one of our favourite corners to see all the action. Cooroy Fruit Bowl’s Steve Hall set up his apparatus to project the image of Venus crossing the sun’s face onto the outside wall of his shop. Steve said the transit of Venus is the most significant, predictable astrological event in our lifetime and was very happy to share it with the many locals who stopped to enjoy it.

Why Good Financial Advice is worth it

services include

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management* DID you know that someone who starts saving with the help of a qualified financial planner at age 30 could be more than $91,000 better off at retirement? This astounding figure comes from recent analysis by KPMG* that shows the significant benefits of good financial advice. And it’s not just those starting early who can improve their finances – even those who receive financial advice later in life can benefit, with an average Australian aged 60 gaining a potential $29,000 more by age 65. As someone who may have experienced the benefits of financial planning with us, you may know that financial security is much more than simply savings. It’s about taking charge of your financial situation and ensuring you are in control of your financial future, no matter what life throws at you. Even when you face additional financial commitments – like falling pregnant, taking on a mortgage, paying a child’s school fees, or meeting unexpected medical expenses – working with a qualified financial planner will help you to navigate the challenges with confidence and peace of mind. And when you have a sound financial plan in place, you know what’s required to achieve your specific financial goals – whether it’s buying your dream home, taking that trip of a lifetime or retiring in style. Once your financial plan is in place, the trick is to keep in touch with us on a regular basis to ensure your plan remains up-to-date and relevant to your particular circumstances. After all, life is full of changes, and your financial strategies need

to adapt to reflect your evolving life stages. Increased savings benefit all Australians Increased savings don’t just benefit you and your family; they also contribute to the Australian economy as a whole, with higher national savings leading to less dependence on foreign finance. In their in-depth analysis, KPMG estimates that just a 5% increase in the number of Australians receiving financial advice would equate to $4.2 billion extra in national savings over 7 years. That’s an astonishing figure that would significantly benefit all Australians. Yet despite the benefits, only 20% of Australians currently seek out advice from a qualified financial planner. Instead, the majority ask a family or friend who – although may have their best interests at heart – are less than qualified to give sound financial advice. So if you or someone you know could do with additional savings – potentially worth tens of thousands of dollars – why not speak to a Certified Financial Planner® professional soon. The Financial Planning Association of Australia celebrates its 12th Financial Planning Week from 20 –26 August 2012, and this can be a great time to talk about the benefits of financial advice. HAVE you got areas of your land that you cannot access because it is too steep? Have you got slopes that your conventional tractor or mower cannot handle? Are you trying to manage areas of your property with equipment that is not safe? A quality, reliable hillside machine is exactly what you need! Glasshouse Tractors have been you local Antonio Carraro dealers since April 2011, a name synonomous with superior hillside tractors and quality engineering at its best. During this time Glasshouse Tractors have become Queensland’s No.1 selling dealer, living up to their reputation of exceptional after sales service and commitment to selling quality machinery specific to your needs. In addition to our current range we are pleased to announce the arrival of Agromehanika Tractors into Australia. An exceptional quality machine similar to that of the Carraro but now allows us to offer a complete hillside range from 35 – 95HP. More and more people are beginning to recognise the benefits of a Hillside machine to that of a conventional tractor. Through many on-farm demos, farmers are continually amazed what our hillside machines are capable of. Just to explain the difference to you, a conventional tractor has a one piece chassis, with a front axle that mounts on a pivot bush below the chassis. Because of the pivot point, the tractor gets no stability from the front axle, only the rear meaning the weight of the chassis and engine are balancing above the pivot point. Add to this the weight of the Front End loader, if fitted, and you end up with a very un-

stable machine. Both Antonio Carraro and Agromehanika tractors, however, have the engine moved forward and lowered onto the front of the front axle, and mounted rigid to it. Effectively the front chassis, the bonnet and front mudguards that all move together as one. The pivot point is behind the front axle and the whole tractor pivots in the middle. Most Carraro and Agro models have a reversible console, allowing you to add a 4-in-1 bucket on the rear of the machine, or slash and mulch with the added manoeuvrability of rear steer, allowing better visibility of the working implement. There are models available to suit your needs and budget. A range of tractor and implement options available to you can be found on our website and the Glasshouse Tractors YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/ glasshousetractors/videos and our website lists all the current models available. If you own steep country, don’t make the mistake of buying a conventional tractor. For a demonstration on how a Hillside machine from Glasshouse Tractors is perfect for your steep country, please contact Mark at Glasshouse Tractors. Glasshouse Tractors will again have a site at this year’s Farm Fantastic. A range of Carraro and Agro tractors will be available to look at, with a series of package deals available, built according to your needs. We look forward to seeing you there and helping you with your enquiry. Be smart. Be safe. Phone 5496 9905.

police beat

with Sergeant Mal Scott IT’S often said that policing is a thankless task. In some instances I would have to agree with this sentiment but in a community such as Cooroy the good far outweighs the bad on most occasions. I recall many years ago when I was stationed at a small western Queensland town as a young Constable, myself and some of the other police in the town were strongly criticized by one of the more well known families in town for picking on their son in regards traffic offences. The young fellow was 18 years old and as is sometimes the case with male teenagers he felt that he was 10 foot tall and bullet proof when it came to his beloved V8. He was a nice young guy with lots to live for. He had a great job, wealthy influential family, girlfriend and his life seemed almost perfect. As a young Constable in town I played all the sports and got along very well with the community but of course to do my job I was often called upon to put my personal feelings aside and do my job as the community would expect. Most of the young guys in town were right into the car scene and of course regularly tested the boundaries in regards the law and some took great pleasure in making a game of breaking the law by driving dangerously and evading the coppers at every opportunity. I recall this particular young man being highly aggressive behind the wheel which of course led to many a run in with the local police, me included. One day I was at the police station when an irate lady showed up at the station and introduced herself as the young man’s mother. She was very upset at the fact that her son had again been pulled over by the local police the night before and told to pull his head in due to the usual burnouts and hoon driving. I endeavoured to explain that he was out of control and was going to kill himself one day if he did not change his attitude to driving but the

mother would hear none of it as her boy had grown up with cars due to the family’s farm background and he was a very skilled driver. I remember being upset at the time thinking that the mother’s wrath was misplaced and I couldn’t understand why she disliked the police so much for simply trying to steer her son away from what was plainly obviously going to happen to everyone except the mother. Several months after this tense standoff I recall working a 4pm to 12 midnight shift when we received the news that a serious traffic incident had occurred on the road to the town’s golf course. We immediately proceeded to the location and arrived in less than 2 minutes to be greeted by a scene straight from hell. A large crowd had gathered in the middle of the road and in the middle of the road lay the twisted and broken body of the same young man that I had been trying so hard to change his attitude to driving. In a horrifying scene the young man was taking his last garbled gasps on this earth and was so horribly injured that there was nothing anyone could do but watch the horrible scene unfold. The young man took about 5 minutes to die with his family and friends surrounding him and attempting to comfort him as best they could. The scene was truly tragic with the young lads mother cradling her broken sons lifeless body in her arms for what seems like hours. The police investigation later revealed that there had been an engagement party at the local golf club involving the young man’s extended family and friends and that sometime during the night the young man had decided to get in his car whilst extremely drunk and drive into town for some food. On the way into town he decided a burnout or two were in order and during this process he ran off the road and became dry bogged and being unable to get his car out he commenced to walk back

towards the club to get help. Whilst walking back along the road he fell asleep in the middle of the road due to being drunk. As bad luck often happens in these instances a drought was gripping the land which necessitated the mass transport of many head of cattle on road trains and due to the huge numbers these movements were 24 hours. It’s not hard to guess what transpired next. The road train, driving late at night fully laden with 100 head of cattle thundering along an unlit single lane outback road with hundreds of dead kangaroos strewn all over the road from feeding on the meagre grass shoots growing off the side of the road. The driver, thinking that the dark mass laying on the road ahead was a dead kangaroo drove straight over the top of the sleeping young man with the world at his feet. It was only at the last minute that the driver saw the shape of a human body but by that time it was too late and the rest is history as they say. I remember as a young Constable standing there at the scene with many emotions running through me with the main emotion being that of sorrow and the feeling of such a tragic waste of a young life. I recall with great clarity the mother at one stage looking up with hate filled eyes looking directly at me and shouting, “You’re to blame for this! Why weren’t you out here and why didn’t you stop him from driving!!” I remember feeling amazed and upset at this comment but put it down to a mother’s grief which is understandable at such an intense time. I’m sure every police officer in the state has a similar story and after 30 years in policing I have many more even more harrowing stories to tell but I tell this true private story so as drivers in general may understand how critical it is to have a safe attitude to driving and why police officers such as myself take the task of enforcing the traffic laws very seriously indeed.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years

Going Away? Send your cat to play at

by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North

THE cooler weather always heralds busy times for us with community events. In early we looked after traffic control and pedestrian safety at Cooroy Fusions which, going by the huge number of people passing through, was a wonderful success. We also had mem-

bers helping out with parking at the Sunshine Coast Heritage Showcase in Pomona and at the Steiner School Open Day. Over the weekend of the International Rally of Queensland we had teams manning the road blocks to keep the drivers safe as they drove at very high speed around the course outside of Pomona as well as in town on the Saturday where the rally cars drove in and parked for 15 minutes before starting on the next stage of their journey. One of our members was lucky enough to get a few minutes with Michael Clark, Australia’s cricket team captain at the time he was completing his drive. People may have seen the Emergency Management Queensland helicopter parked on the sports ground in Cooroy recently. It had a mechanical problem while ferrying someone to hospital and with the aid of night vision goggles was able to land in Cooroy to await repairs. In the meantime, the patient was taken by ambulance to another helicopter to be transported to Brisbane and our Local Controller, Stan Ryan, was called at 1.00am to see if he could organise members to stand guard on this piece of valuable equipment until it was able to take off again. So we had a number of members rotating through the rest of the night and until 6.00pm

the next day. It certainly caused a bit of a buzz in town, with many people coming out to have a look. Life is never dull in the SES and we never know what we might be asked to help out with outside of our usual storm damage, land search and road traffic crash activations. Our next intake of new members will be on 14 July. Look for the Big RED Awnings

WHEN Andrew Flanagan, owner of Sunshine Unicycles, arrives at the Pomona skate park in his old Landrover, packed to the brim with his latest obsession, kids of all ages flock to greet him and show him their progress. The unicycle, although an odd choice to add to the arsenal of a skate park, has sparked the interest of many children in Pomona, all compelled by Andrews addiction and love of it. It all started with Andrew going down to the skate park, intent on taking on the ramps, showing his skills off to the kids who frequent the park — but of course, after kids asked to try, he couldn’t resist his true calling in life: teaching kids new and interesting ways to get out and get active. Youth week was a blessing to the growing unicycle buzz in Pomona, and as Andrew took part in the event,

many kids carried on unicycling even after Youth Week had concluded. Now dozens of kids in Pomona have been taking over the skate park, many with their very own unicycles, all feeling the euphoria of achieving something new, something different. When asked what their favourite part of the unique sport is, many kids exclaimed that they love everything about it, and after asking Matthew what he would say to someone who hadn’t ridden one before, he said, ‘It’s really fun! You should try it!’ As stated by one mother of the young unicyclists, ‘Your [Andrew’s] enthusiasm is captivating’. It’s hard to be around him and not try it out. And why not? Sunshine Unicycles meet every Sunday 3-5pm at Pomona Skate Park.

news Pomona State School needs your old mobile phones

COOROY RAG

Ddedicated “Eco Warrior” students are keen to get mobile phones out of landfill.

Find out how you can reduce your risk of cancer! TAKE 10 minutes out of your day to look after yourself and participate in a health check. On Wednesday 11th July Qld Health will be giving a talk at the Pomona & District Community House on healthy living and a short health check will be available. Health issues that will be discussed include: Screening and early detection, Lifestyle risk factors, Bowel cancer, Prostate cancer,

Breast cancer, Skin cancer, Cervical cancer, Testicular cancer. Enjoy the talk, take the health check and enjoy a healthy morning tea. Date: Wednesday 11th July, 9.45am for a 10.00am start Venue: Lawson Shed, Pomona & District Community House. Cost: $4. Information and Bookings: 54852427 Please book in for catering purposes.

POMONA State School is continuing it’s campaign to help protect the environment, by registering for a mobile phone recycling appeal. The School is already involved in a number of environmental and recycling programs, such as paper, aluminium cans, cardboard, batteries and organic waste, so when the opportunity to add mobile phone recycling to the list, they jumped at the chance. By recycling electronic devices, such as mobiles, we reduce the amount of waste discarded in landfill sites and also limits potentially dangerous chemicals from seeping into our soils and water. Re-use of electronic devices means less manufacturing, reducing our global greenhouse emissions it is estimated that up to 50kg of CO2 is used during the manufacture of one mobile phone. To make the incentive of recycling phones and removing them from landfill even greater, the school is also in the running to receive an ipad for every 250 phones collected! we are asking the whole community to get behind this cause, not only to help the environment, but to help Pomona State School reach their total of 250 phones!! if you have old phones at home (working or not, chargers and accessories not needed), please drop them into the collection box at the school office or Pomona Newsagency. For more information contact Jaymie 54851688.

Kin Kin Kids Get Kreative in the Kitchen

THE Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Scheme has been a huge success at the Kin Kin State School. All grades are involved in this great scheme where the children plant the food and the older grades pick the food then cook it. This scheme also employs two locals – a gardening specialist and a cook. The school has many volunteers from the Kin Kin Community who help the students and teachers both in the garden and the kitchen. The scheme has been running for over a year now and the children named the cafe “Kin Kin Kids Kookaburra Kafe”. A three course meal is only $5.00 at 1:15pm every Friday during school term. All proceeds are put back into the kitchen garden scheme.

This month’s menu is pumpkin soup, pumpkin and spinach pizza, roasted vegies with couscous and a harissa dressing, pasta with a tomato sauce (homemade - yum!) and flat bread with a sage butter. Lots of members from the community and even grandparents from Oxford, England turned up for the occassion! Francesca Auckland (aged 10) one of the Kin Kin cooks said “I have learnt so much about gardening and cooking, I am now cooking at home.” Riley Drent (aged 10) “I love cooking and I hope to audition for “Master Chef” as this course has taught me so many great things. My mum is really happy as I help her in the garden and kitchen at home.”

Cooroy back in action

Andrew admitted to Supreme Court

ORIGINALLY from the suburb of Paddington in Brisbane, Andrew Markert moved to the beautiful town of Cooroy, in the year 2000, and he now calls Cooroy home. At the age of 27, Paul Bone, Solicitor, urged him to study law and make a career in the industry. Under the guidance of Paul Bone’s astute legal mind, Andrew began to prosper in the law firm known as Bone Lawyers. The main areas of law that Andrew concentrates on are Wills, Estates, Commercial and Property law. Having completed a 10 year parttime combined degree of Bachelor of Arts/Laws at the University of New England in 2011, while completing the required practical legal training of 5 years articles of clerkship, Andrew was admitted in the Supreme Court in the legal profession as a Solicitor on 4 June 2012. No one is prouder of Andrew’s achievement than his wife Stephanie, who is his greatest supporter. Stephanie works with Andrew at Bone Lawyers and both of them enjoy the family orientated business. Andrew wants to promote the town of Cooroy because he believes it has so much potential with its friendly locals, cafes, retail shops, businesses and sporting clubs. He is proud of this close knit community and says it is the ideal spot to raise his family.

Cooroy Rag Vice President and Cooroy Rag poet, Mr Jim Dunstan (right), pictured with Neil Dwyer (Daddows Cooroy), bought himself a brand new Honda Jazz last month. Normally, someone purchasing a new vehicle wouldn’t be newsworthy but our Jim is 94. To him that’s just a number and we hope you have many years of enjoyment in your new Jazz.

Above: Hinternoosa celebrated the re-opening of their premises in Maple Street last week (after the building lost its roof in February’s storm). Donations were accepted for the Matt Golinski recovery fund trust. Murray Brown said the renovations look terrific and said if there was ever another big storm in town the building would now be the safest place to be.

No better time to buy a new car THE end of financial year countdown sale at Madill Holden, Noosaville is the perfect time to buy a new car … an Australian made Holden. With neverseen-before deals on a huge range of new vehicles, local lass Emilie Dawson couldn’t resist. The three years extra roadside assist, two years extra factory warranty and one free standard service on top of a car already full of accessories and safety features is a fabulous bonus.

Below: The Endeavour Foundation shop in Maple Street also celebrated it’s re-opening with a morning tea.

Joyce Cunningham and Gwen Munche cut the ribbon at the re-opening ceremony. Joyce has been a volunteer at the Endeavour shop for 28 years and Gwen for 25 years and both look forward to continuing their good work at the newly renovated store.

The friendly, professional staff with their knowledge of cars they believe in, made it easy for Emilie to choose her dream car. Financial advice and the customer care centre at Madill Holden made sure Emilie’s new car buying experience was enjoyable. So pop in to Madill Holden in Noosaville for a great deal for yourself or call for more information on 5470 0702.

news New dishes and extended lunch hours at Dhoms

COOROY RAG WITH the cooler months ahead, Dhom’s Kitchen have extended their lunch hours to include Saturdays and have added some warming winter dishes to their lunch menu. Dhom and Spencer have introduced two of the highlights from their recent Thai Street Food Dinner to their lunch menu: Poached ‘Hainanese’ Chicken with Rice, and Roti with Beef Curry. “For the Poached Chicken we use organic chickens from our friends at Bendele Poultry in Imbil,” says Spencer. “The chickens are slow poached in chicken stock for 3 hours. The

dish comes as a set of food with pandanus-infused jasmine rice, chicken broth, and yellow bean and ginger dipping sauce. We spent many years researching this dish across Thailand. Our favourite version is from a small lunchtime restaurant in Chiang Mai which still serves the dish wrapped in banana leaf. The restaurant closes when the food runs out!” Roti as a substitute for rice has it’s origins in Southern Thailand, most likely influenced by the Muslim-style curries from Malaysia. Traditionally served in Thailand with beef curry as a snack, in recent

years it has found it’s way onto the menus of upmarket Bangkok restaurants as a main course. “Our Roti with Beef Curry is inspired by an old restaurant, Kalpapruek, which started this trend in Bangkok,” says Spencer. While Dhoms Kitchen’s evening menu is classic Central Thai cuisine, their lunch menu offers some favourites from across South East

The Wednesday to Saturday night dining and Sunday brunches which Michael had offered were hugely popular and will be missed by all who were lucky enough to experience them. Francoise says, “It was a privilege to work with Michael, and we wish him all the best.”

Asia. “We love to share the food we enjoy at home with our friends and customers,” says Dhom. Due to popular demand their Laksa Lemak is back on the menu this winter. Over 40 ingredients are used in the making of this dish with the spices and herbs painstakingly roasted and ground individually. Also on the menu is their lovingly made Pho, Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup. The

beef stock takes three days to prepare. All the herbs for the noodle soup are grown in Dhom and Spencer’s garden. New Winter Hours Wednesday to Saturday Lunch: 11.30am-2.00pm Dinner: from 5.30pm 1a Garnet St., Cooroy ph. 5447 7710 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ dhomskitchen Twitter: @dhomskitchen

news ‘Green Art’ is the new contemporary social art movement WORLDWIDE, green art is inspiring and facilitating innovative relationships between scientists, communities and the creative sector, and in no place is it more prevalent than the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Leah Barclay from the Noosa Biosphere Cultural Board said throughout history people from all cultures have practiced green art, creatively expressing and documenting their connection to place in painting, song, sculpture, dance and story. “Over the last several decades green art has been exploring the expanding cross-cultural intersection of creativity and ecology,” said Ms Barclay. “Arts are crucial to developing a positive engagement with our natural surroundings and with our more-than-human future. Green art projects are often collaborative, involve a diverse range of artistic disciplines, and employ community development principles in their processes. “There is a strong focus on art and environment activities across the whole of the Sunshine Coast region. The beauty of Noosa biosphere’s landscape for example, encourages the best of cultural engagement and enables nature’s voice a place in our decision-making,” said Ms Barclay. “Floating Land 2013 is an artistic festival that will explore the natural world’s ancient practices and how it provides knowledge, insight and bio-inspired solutions towards a sustainable future,” said Ms Barclay. The Noosa Biosphere Ltd Cultural Board is calling out to local artist of the Sunshine Coast, to submit an expression of interest application for the inaugural Noosa Biosphere Art Prize. The award theme for 2012 is ‘Innovation in Green Art’ and will fund a local artist or collaborative team $2000 to deliver a project at the arts and cultural event Floating Land 2013. Noosa Biosphere will announce the winners of the art prize on 16th September 2012 at the annual Noosa Biosphere Festival. Applications are encouraged and now open now through www.noosabiosphere.org/artprize.

Garden expo THE 2012 Queensland Garden Expo will once again attract over 30,000 visitors to the Sunshine Coast with the event boasting the biggest collection of sub-tropical plants in Australia and offering a fun day out for the whole family. Held at the Nambour Showgrounds, the three-day Expo, from July 6-8 is a firm favourite with both gardening enthusiasts and those just finding their green fingers and attracts visitors from across Queensland and interstate. The action-packed program features over 30 gardening experts presenting free lectures and demonstrations on a diverse range of topics and the 55 nurseries exhibiting will expect to sell over 40,000 plants per day.

WITH winter officially here on, it’s important to start taking the flu seriously and understand that it’s nothing to sniff at. Statistics show that the flu can be a grim illness and in Australia each year contributes to more deaths than road accidents[1] as well as 300,000 doctor visits and 18,000 hospitalisations[2] Here’s a set of handy tips to help us avoid the flu - tips that could save you from one or two weeks spent laid up in bed, having to spend money on medications and, more importantly, can save lives. 1. Get vaccinated Getting vaccinated is the single, most effective way to minimise the risk of contracting the disease.

Your Family Friendly Practice

2. Stay away from sick people During flu season it’s not unreasonable to avoid interaction with people that are sick. Whether it’s social or business, don’t feel guilty, the closer you get to someone with the flu, the better your chances of getting it. Feel free to tell any “outbreak monkeys” that you know to stay at home! 3. Enjoy a well balanced diet containing a broad variety of fresh food, fruit and vegetables The more variety and the more vitamins and minerals, the better your chance of maintaining good nutritional health and a potent immune system. 4. Learn to love soap and warm water

Hand-washing is exceptionally important in decreasing the spread of the influenza virus. All you need is soap, some water and an eagerness to lather. Don’t forget to get the kids involved at the same time, it’s a great habit to get them into. 5. Stop lying The average person tells four lies a day, that’s 1,460 a year. One of the major giveaways that someone is telling a lie is that they touch their nose face and eyes, which during flu season increases your chance of catching and spreading the flu. So if you quit the white lies you reduce your chances of getting the flu . . . and ending your relationship at the same time!

New direction for healthcare THERE is a new way of being treated for health issues here on the coast. A totally new direction for health care for individuals and families. The Cooroora Family Health CenDr Ann Buchnan tre, located in Station Street Pomona, is a friendly bustling place, with happy staff and enthusiastic and talented people providing a rich variety of health care. It is not always about medical services; sometimes allied health workers contribute as much, or even more, to the general wellbeing of all of us. A counsellor may be able to provide insight and strategies to deal with emotional upset, and help overcome some of the difficulties balancing modern life. Chinese medicine can also provide balance, returning a person to a place of harmony and wellbeing, using a combination of hair analysis, acupuncture and Chinese therapies to detoxify and allow physical wellbeing to return . Who would suggest that a box of painkillers is the only remedy for sore aching bones and muscles-who would not prefer a therapeutic remedial massage to help alleviate pain, or restful Zen Shiatzu to return that elusive feeling of calmness. Foot problems can be prevented by a good podiatrist. Even from an early age, future foot problems can be avoided with careful examination of the anatomy of the gait and revision of footwear. Most of us would prefer a dietician to keep us out of trouble, than a doctor complaining that we mismanaged our food intake to the point of ill health. There are countless ways of preventing ill health using herbs, a herbalist will take a fine detailed history and determine a formula best suited to your health needs. A good herbalist will be interested in prevention as well as treatment. Bowen therapy can provide significant improvement in overall health in many areas, ranging from skeletal and muscle problems, to nervous strain, headache and tension. Here, at our bright and friendly health centre, we truly want to be a centre for health-providing a range of services in an approachable and friendly fashion. Our waiting room is more like a sitting room; we have a library of books which can be borrowed, a play area and little peoples’ library for our smaller friends. All our staff are friendly and helpful. We look forward to welcoming you at Cooroora Family Health, Station Street, Pomona. Ph 5485 1321.

Accidents don’t always have to be a pain! MANY of the people who get treatment for pain management have had not only slow impact car crashes but also falls from horses, slips off the sidewalk, down stairs or off objects etc. Many people have had a number of small impacts that, at the time, didn’t seem to make a huge difference or major injury but over

time their pain levels, lack of mobility and stress levels have increased slowly, almost creeping up on them. This is why it is extremely important to receive treatment straight away to avoid the compounding of the injury and damage to bone and muscle. The sooner you fix a misalignment or

“SHOCKED muscle or organ the soon the body can heal. People often receive Acupuncture or Massage when their muscles still carry the shock of accidents that have occurred many years previously. The muscles tighten in reaction to the accident and have yet to fully let go and relax. This can cause a lack

of blood flow and movement, strain on the surrounding muscles and bone structure, over time, adding up to pain and toxin build ups, muscle waste and bone damage, all of which could have been greatly reduced if not avoided all together with a relaxing massage or acupuncture treatment.

The moral of the story, old injuries can be fixed and old pain can be managed, but the earlier you are treated the more successful the results will be and you may even avoid the pain in the first place. For more information or to book in for an appointment phone Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526.

Meningitis MENINGITIS is inflammation of the meninges, the protective layer that covers the brain and spinal cord. It is not common. I have seen three cases in 15 years of being a doctor. It can be deadly however. Two out of those three survived. In general there is a 10% fatality rate with about 40% of survivors having longer term complications such as deafness. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, cancer cells or, less commonly seen nowadays, TB. There were 3 recent cases in Gladstone and so far this year there have been 15 cases in Queensland. Bacterial meningitis is the type that most often causes serious illness. Symptoms are fairly non specific in infants but include fever, vomiting, irritability, drowsiness and seizures. In adults or older children they may describe muscle and joint aches, confusion, problems with looking at the light (photophobia) and neck stiffness. The characteristic rash of meningitis, initially small bruises called petechiae developing into larger bruises, is associated with a particular type of bacterial meningitis called meningococcal. This is usually quite a late sign of the illness when the infection is more widespread; septicaemia. Don’t exclude meningitis just because no rash is present. Meningococcal meningitis is the type that normally affects small children. The two main types in Australia are Meningococcal B and C. Since 2003 we have been able to immunise against Menin-

gococcal C which accounts for about 30% of cases. How long does it last for? Probably about 3-5 years and so there is talk of a booster dose later in life to cover the teenage years. Immunisation against Meningococcal B is in the development stage but within 5 years I am confident there will be protection against that as well. Other bacteria such as pneumococcus and Haemophilus B can also cause meningitis or septicaemia. Pneumococcus is the bacteria that is the most common cause of meningitis in adults. We can now be immunised against both of these bacteria in the first year of life. Do these immunisations work? Immunisation against Haemophilus B (HIB) was introduced in 1993. Prior to this about 500 children per year less than 6 years of age had significant HIB disease, most of them being meningitis. 5% of kids with HIB meningitis died and 40% had long term complications such as deafness or intellectual impairment. Since immunisation the figure per year getting the disease is down from 500 to about 15. How do we treat meningitis? Well, in hospital for a start. Antibiotics through a drip and sometimes steroids to prevent brain swelling. Supporting the body’s vital functions in Intensive Care is often required. Make sure the kids are protected. Don’t rely on someone else to eradicate the disease. Dr Ken Corbett, Maple Street Surgery

IF you are pregnant or have recently had a baby, the changes to your body are often overwhelming and sometimes quite painful. From pelvic pain, back pain, abdominal muscle separation, pelvic floor weakness and varicose veins, pregnancy can wreak havoc on our bodies. Whilst we know that many of these problems can be eased with appropriate exercise, there has been a lack of supportive devices available for women during pregnancy and beyond. Well that has all changed with the increasingly popular SRC pregnancy and recovery shorts. Celebrities like Catriona Rowntree have been singing the praises of these shorts for assisting with their quick return to pre baby clothes and toned bodies. Pregnancy and recovery shorts have been designed to be worn under clothing and provide gentle compression to the lumbar spine, lower abdominals, pelvis and perineum. Their graduated compression also assists to reduce varicose veins and aching legs. By providing gentle compression to the pelvis, SRC pregnancy shorts stimulate the muscles to remain active, thereby enhancing stability and reducing pain. The lightweight design means that they can be worn in bed, helping to reduce pain when turning over. Following pregnancy, the recovery shorts are ideal for women who have suffered an abdominal muscle separation or who have a caesarean scar and need abdominal support. The abdominal support panel in the recovery shorts extends to ribs, thereby facilitating the abdominal muscles and improving core stability. The gentle compression provides lower back and pelvic support, allowing the new mum to move easier with less pain and improved muscle stability. And for those women whose post natal days are long gone, the SRC sports shorts provide excellent support for the back, pelvis and perineum during sport. Hinteractive Physio are now stockists of SRC pregnancy and recovery shorts. For more information on these fantastic products, check out their website at www.recoveryshorts.com or call Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 for further information.

Treat your back TWO decades on, Sue Nelson’s Acupuncture patients know that she really enjoys treating the back! Sue says ‘My back treatments are strong musculo-skeletal treatments – addressing back pain – while also treating the back alarm points linked with key internal organs. After palpating for sore, tight or swollen areas - from the neck to the sacrum – I use a combination of Acupuncture, Moxa, Massage and Cupping in an intensive 1 hour treatment’. ‘I follow David Legge’s principles for treating backs, using his osteopathic knowledge of the back along with Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts, to give a truly holistic treatment.’ Now Sue has moved her practice to Cooroora Family Health in

Pomona, and is offering $60 Full Back treatments to all patients (though new patients will be charged $80 for the first treatment). Sue says, ‘I am very excited to be part of this unique allied health centre in the hinterland. Patients are the winners when they can access the collective knowledge and clinical expertise of a group of seasoned health-care professionals. ‘I’m also looking forward to 1 July when Acupuncture becomes a government-registered profession, making it a recognised part of 21st century integrative health care in this country. Appointments with Sue can be made on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays by phoning Cooroora Family Health on 5485 1321.

Horses can help

HOLISTEQUINE is holding the first of our weekly workshops to help families and teachers approach these common problems from a different perspective. During the 15 years working with horses in equine assisted life coaching our horses have shown us that everything is simple, that we humans complicate everything by over thinking and that if we just take a breath and tune into our own inner strength the answers will come. At Holistequine our specially prepared horses become a bio-feedback tool to aid in physical, emotional/mental and spiritual wellbeing. During our years of re-

search and trialling our system we have found that by approaching these issues at the “energy’ level” then all the other “levels” fall into place. Quite simply horses provide us with a reference point that allows us to simplify our approach by using our higher intelligence Many of the common complexities that we see in today’s society like bullying, dysfunctional relationships etc. are caused by poor emotional intelligence, that is an in ability to express ourselves effectively Holistequine life coaching horses show us how to express ourselves with love by showing us that “bullying” when seen as “energy” is a natural course of action for members of a group to find a functional balance. Anyone interested in this simple effective approach to Positive Parenting, Bullying and Family Dynamics ... EALC sessions are Thursday 14 th June (6 week program 10.30 – 12.pm) cost $55.00 per session Ph 07 55 78 2697 www.holistequine.com

Don’t let the fog blindfold you HAVE you even been frustrated by foggy spectacle lenses? This common problem affects most spectacle wearers at some time. An unwanted and uncontrollable “blindfold” appears unexpectedly and interferes with one’s daily life. Local optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod of optometry@cooroy say that “Thanks to award winning technology there is now an immediate, efficient and durable fog-fee solution to an age-old problem. We are pleased to be able to offer Optifog as an option on all our new Essilor spectacle lenses, whatever the prescription.” “It doesn’t matter what time of year, spectacle wearers face the problem of fogging in all sorts of situations. In summer fogging occurs most often when leaving an air-conditioned environment. In winter the problems arise when having a hot drink in the morning, when cooking, opening the dishwasher, riding a motorcycle or taking part in a sports activity. Work situations where masks or goggles are worn

can be particularly problematic.” Jenny adds. According to research carried out around the world, 75% of spectacle wearers would welcome an anti-fog solution for improved comfort and vision in their daily life. To find a solution to this issue, leading optical lens company Essilor conducted several years of intensive research which has resulted in an innovative technological solution to the issue of fog. Heather explains “The Optifog lens is activated with the Optifog Activator by simply adding a drop of this concentrate to each side of the Optifog lens. By gently wiping with a microfiber cloth making sure to coat the entire surface, spectacle wearers will find that their vision becomes fogfree up to one week. It is suitable for lenses that correct all types of vision problems.” For more information about Optifog lenses contact optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy for more information or call 5442 5555 for an appointment.

Million dollar views THE panoramic views from 75 Northmount Rd take you to the next level. These views are truly irreplaceable and they will force you to draw a sigh every time you happen to glance outside. On my last visit to this unique location I spotted 4 large ships on the horizon, beyond seamless acres of lush green tree tops and ancient mountains. Rainbow Beach sand blow and the coloured sands of Teewah are easily recognizable from this eagle’s nest location. On a clear day you will feel calm and tranquil, but during the storm season nothing will compare to the sheer thrill of watching the orchestra of lightning and thunder in natures own surround sound theatre. The large 12 year old brick and tile Allweather home situated on 2.6 acres at the end off a culdesac, is in complete privacy with no visible neighbours from the home. This is a spacious home with 4 large bedrooms, two of which have attached living areas ideal for long term guests or family entertainment centres. The open plan living and combined lounge with 12 ft

ceilings are adjacent to a large media room. Getting out of bed in the morning will be a pleasure as the view from the master bedroom through the bay window will welcome you each day. A roomy walk in robe and ensuite are attached to the master bedroom. The large family kitchen with self closing doors and drawers has a walk in pantry plus a 2nd pantry and plenty of bench space.

sport IMPACT Boxing Academy’s young guns shine

COOROY RAG IMPACT Boxing Academy’s young guns continued to shine when they travelled to the Beenleigh Tavern to compete at the South East Queensland Titles last weekend. The Impact crew won 4 gold medals and 3 silver medals adding another four title holders to their gym. Alec “The Annihilator” Aird-Cardiff’s opponent was the more experienced Raymond Gebou from Brisbane. The bout was declared a draw and being a title bout where you cannot have a drawn decision the judges went to a count back to the scores at the end of round two. In a questionable decision Gebou was awarded the bout by one point! Connor “The Cricifier” Jones’s opponent was Luke Bebe from Brisbane. Jones dominated rounds 1 and 2 and mid way through round 3 Jones caught Bebe with a cracking left hook which signalled the end of the bout. Jones was awarded the win with a TKO decision. Impact’s Daniel “The Destroyer” DeGiorgio proved to be too much

to handle for Jack Robinson, stopping him 30 sec into the first round. Daniel was awarded the victory with a TKO decision and remains undefeated. Cian “The Cannon” Jones continued his winning way with an easy points victory over Ronnan Poulis. Jones dominated to win every round & also remains undefeated. Benny “The Bulldog” Cameron-Hands took on Bailey Mcgaughran from Kawana. Round one saw both boys settle in nicely, throwing good combinations when midway through the round Benny got caught with an accidental thumb in the eye from a straight right hand from Bailey. Benny was unable to continue & Bailey was awarded the victory. Callum “Carnage” Jones made a welcome return to the ring after a 12 month break. Jones’s opponent was Micheal Deegan from Beaudesert. Jones dominated every round with his superb footwork & lightning fast hands to win a points decision.

From the start of round one both boys put on an awesome display of boxing. Both boxers had their moments in what was a exciting and close bout. With the crowd standing & waiting for the decision Mcgaughran was awarded the bout 13-9. “I am so proud of our boys. They continue to impress not only me, but everyone that is following them as well,” said trainer Mark Evans.

“I would also like to thank all of our travelling supporters who continue to turn up and

Local AFL News From Demon’s Den! Pomona Demons Auskick kids travelled by bus last week Gabba to see the Lions beat West Coast Eagles. They did the half time show out on the ground. Also a few of the under 8’s and under 10’s did the honour guard for the Lions when they ran on the field at the start of the game.

end. Big day for Gympie with the official opening of their renovated clubhouse. Unfortunately for Gympie the boys in Blue and Gold once again beat them to retain the Frank Rowe shield for yet another year. The boys are all geared up now to get some big win in and make finals once more. As always Jye Fitzpatrick was a stand out but unfortunately he ended up being taken from the ground to hospital with a fractured collar bone. Mick Maymuru and Nick Coombes also deserve a special mention. Then to top it all we had two father son combinations out there, Liam and his

dad Andrew Hennings who have played all season and back from what we had all hoped was retirement came Bill Magin to play alongside his son Blake. On the subject of old timers the Masters side (over 38 years old) is still getting out there every second Sunday playing a bit of competitive footy against other clubs from the southeast and having a good time about it. So if you get inspired to pull on the boots again give Phil a call (0412 675 374). Juniors are going great guns at the moment. The end of round 9 sees the U14s with another win and sitting 8 points clear

on the top of the ladder. The team has seen a mid year surge in numbers from players who are all new to AFL. The U12s are back to their start of the season glory after being returned to division 2. The kids are all having a great time and there’s certainly some talent in this bunch. More than a few AFL stars in the making here. The 8’s and 10’s as always out there having fun come rain or yet more rain! On the Sunday a big bus trip was organised down to the Gabba where some of the kids (along with a Noosa girls team) were part of the honour guard

for Brownie’s 100th game as captain of the Lions. Accompanying them was our Auskick kids who all had a great time playing the grid game out there on the Gabba at half time in front of all their adoring fans. Was a long day with 35 kids and parents going down on the bus (thank you Wayne the driver) plus a few more meeting them down there at the Gabba. Lot of tired but happy faces returning late Sunday night after being part of a great game and a good win for the Lions. Lets hope this inspires some future AFL stars from the experience! Go the Demons!

Cooroy girls make SC Regional team LAST month two girls from Cooroy State School Teegan Hall & Hannah Natole were chosen to represent Noosa in the Sunshine Coast schoolgirl’s soccer championships. After many weeks of training in Coolum, the championships were held in Buderim last Wednesday & Thursday. The Noosa girls played some great games and placed third in the championships. From this event, 20 girls were then picked for the Regional team. The sunshine coast team will soon be heading to Mackay for the state championships from the 19 th to the 22nd of July. Out of our two girls from Cooroy, Teegan Hall was chosen in the Sunshine coast team. Teegan has also played soccer for 2 years on the weekends for the cooroorah soccer under 13yrs girls. As you can imagine Teegan has loved the game for many years now and has a mean kick on her. This is such a high accolade for teegan and her family. We would like to thank those of the Cooroy community for there support in making Teegan’s dreams a reality. Further, more if anyone would like to help Teegan realise her sporting dream, please feel free to contact Jacinta Hall on 0412087207

Victors at International Rally of Queensland TWICE National Offroad Racing champions Clayton Chapman and co-driver Adam McGuire from Chapmans offroad racing of Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast, tested their skills in a different style of racing at the International Rally of Queensland held in the Imbil forestry on the weekend. After 18 gruelling sections of racing over 2 days, the duo clocked the quickest time & claimed victory in the Allcomers class, driving the Mitsubishi Triton. The ceremonial start over the podium on Friday night at Kings Beach Caloundra, gave the boys opportunity to meet the other 26 competitors in their class. Vehicles they competed against included Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo, Nissan Silvia, turbocharged Datsun Stanza & other well set up cars. The Triton was referred to as the heavy weight in the field. Being relatively unknown in rally the boys were seeded towards the end of the field, but at the end of

Myall St, Cooroy • 5447 6258 the 1st day, they were coming 1st which surprised a lot of competitors. Despite having brake failure in a stage on the 2nd day, they managed to keep racing.. After frantically fixing the problem with the help of the pit crew, the boys managed to complete the rally with no other problems. After all the times were added together for both days, the boys were presented with the trophy for 1st Outright in their class, which is an exciting result. Clayton said it was a great experience and an awesome event,

but his loyalties lie with offroad racing. Adam said,” The last two days have definitely been a rush was a huge team effort in the car, and also in the service park.” Despite such a great victory the Chapmans team have no time to celebrate as they are heading to Sea Lake in Victoria for the 1 st round of the National Offroad Racing Champion-
