by Brenda Gladwood ONCE again, Noosa District State High School students did themselves proud with their dazzling production of the musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The audience was treated to a spectacular musical performance by the entire cast, but special mention must go to Lexi Kehl who played Dorothy, Paige Salangsang, the scarecrow, Adam Robins, the tin man, Aki Yaguchi, the cowardly lion and Madeleine McMahon, the wicked witch, who were brilliantly cast and gave it their all. I’ve been going to the school’s annual performances for years and am never ceased to be amazed by the professionalism and talent of these young players and producers. The acting, dancing, costumes, lighting and props could easily match performances I’ve seen at the Lyric Theatre. There are certainly a few youngsters here who are destined for a career on the stage. Congratulations to all involved!

Not my fave

IT’S funny how some things in your life are a constant … or so you think, until they disappear. As I ate my porridge this morning out of a mixing bowl using a ladle as my spoon I had to wonder … what’s happened to all my kitchen stuff. I wasn’t using these large utensils because I was especially hungry; it’s just that my knives, forks and spoons are disappearing as mysteriously as they arrived. I don’t remember ever purchasing a cutlery set, just as I don’t remember buying all the weird big cutlery (I don’t even know what the generic name for these things is) like those big spoons with slots in them, egg rings, chicken scissors etc. They’ve just always been there and of course THEY still are … it’s only the everyday items that are missing. I gave up long ago wondering about the whole missing sock thing, I shrug off the odd missing shoe, I scoff at those with matching earrings and I have never been able to lay the table for the occasional ‘special dinner’ with matching anything. Now that table is going to be more eclectic than ever. Next to someone’s dinner plate (hopefully the one that says ‘Mother’ that has been hanging on the wall - Mother’s Day circa 1996) there will be a spatula, garlic crusher and single chop stick … perhaps someone will eventually put that apple corer to good use. Good luck with that spag bog. Luckily I think mix and match dining is now quite the in-thing … I may have just taken it to a whole other level. So there you have it … cutlery, crockery and corers … Eating soup with the potato masher not my fave!

Big square meals mean big round figures We’ve had endless surveys to tell us what we know, That people are getting fatter and obesity is all the go. It’s not just the oldies either, many children are obese too, If you watch the people in the street, you’ll agree that this is true. We seem to be obsessed with food with eating to excess, And wonder why our clothes are tighter, the trousers and the dress. It is a constant struggle, this battle of the bulge, With so many temptations to surrender and indulge. Obesity sufferers must be uncomfortable, loaded with that extra size, Big rears, big fronts, big hips and big thighs. More chins that a Hong Kong telephone book, One feels sorry for those with that unattractive look.

Many children have probably after school played a computer game, No energetic exercise, to slim that childish frame. The magazines are packed with diets on the fat attack, And they also print rich recipes to put the weight right back! Meals can be bought already prepared, you only have to heat it, Then sit in front of the tele, and watch Neighbours while you eat it. Are we too concerned with eating, in this food-rich nation, While some third world people, are facing mass starvation? news Cooroy set to become better communicators WE have all heard the statistics that the number one fear of many people is to speak in public and in fact Death by Fire rates lower on the list of fears. While we know that realistically this would not be true it is a fact that many people are frightened to speak up in public. The town of Cooroy will soon be graced with a Toastmasters club to help locals overcome this fear and become better communicators and leaders. The club will be backed by Toastmasters International which is the leading communication and leadership organization in the world. Since 1924, more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation in Toastmasters. Today Toastmasters International has a membership of 260 000 with 12 500 club worldwide. Club members grow in confidence as they learn by participating in and working through a structured communication and leadership program. Feedback is provided by club members through evaluations which is the cornerstone of effective Toastmasters clubs. Meetings usually consist of a variety of segments including prepared speeches, impromptu speaking, evaluations and many other fun and engaging segments. Members also learn chairmanship and get the chance to learn business meeting procedure. Sponsors Richard Hansen and Nicole Nowell have been Toastmasters members for a number of years and both see a tremendous opportunity for a community club in the area. Richard who has recently moved to the Cooroy area had been prompted to start a Toastmasters club in Cooroy after enquiries by some local business people. He says that Toastmasters has considerably changed his life and he communicates more confidently. “I still remember my first meeting and am amazed by the changes I have seen in myself and other people. I recall one business women who sent her staff to the front counter in her shop because she was to scared to talk to people. She has changed this through Toastmasters and now is the face of a successful commercial laundry business”. A demonstration meeting will be held at Cooroy Library on the 4th of July, 2011 starting at 6:30pm and finishing at 8:00pm. An invitation is extended to any member of the community to attend this meeting and subsequent meetings which will be held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. Cooroy Fusion will be an annual community festival

Cooroy Library’s Liz Beechmore receiving a $1000 sponsorship cheque from Fiona Hutchings of Bendigo Bank THE resounding success of Cooroy Fusion has been followed with calls from the community to host the event on an annual basis. Cooroy Fusion was big. Up to 2,000 people attended the all day community event at Mill Place on Saturday 21 May to help celebrate the first birthday of Cooroy Library. There wasn’t a car park to be found in Cooroy as people flocked to the library, Butter Factory Arts Centre and Lower Mill site. Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan said at every turn on the precinct there was an activity or workshop occurring. “There were rides, market stalls, great food and non-stop entertainment,” Cr Brennan said. “The great turn-out and support from the community combined with the success of the non-stop entertainment and diverse range of activities for all age groups has cemented Cooroy Fusion as a yearly celebration.” The Gubbi Gubbi dancers were a highlight, providing an unforgettable cultural experience through their magical presentation of song and dance. Folk singer and songwriter, Ayla Scanlon from Noosa Christian College wasn’t deterred by rain showers and her dulcet tones ranged movingly through the amphitheatre. Performers from Noosa District High School entertained the crowds with a side-slapping Monty Python comic skit. The school band played whilst the drama group enacted a physical theatre piece using costume suits and balloons to great effect. The library’s first birthday cake was shared amongst the

crowds to the tunes of ‘Happy Birthday’ from the Pomona Choir. In the Fitness and Wellbeing area there was a squatting competition hosted by The Workout Shed. Tai Chi and yoga demonstrations complemented the fast pace of Cooroy Gymnastics Club with their running, tumbling and jumping skills. Local and national authors including Antoinette O’Conner, Ann Rickard, Annette Hughes, Ange Taktis and Jackie Hellwig intrigued the crowds with their personal stories and anecdotes about the joys and sorrows of writing. It was the Rooftop venue that really had the party jumping with a ‘killer’ performance by local singer songwriter Asa Broomhall. Asa is an internationally renowned rock, folk and blues performer and it was his first time playing to a Cooroy audience. It was also an opportunity for new and emerging music artists to strut their stuff on the main stage with a mix of hip hop and rock tunes. Cooroy Library’s Liz Bleechmore – who coordinated the event – conveyed her gratitude to the sponsors of Cooroy Fusion. “This wonderful community event happened because of the generous support of Sunshine Coast Council, Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Rag and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce,” she said. The annual Cooroy Fusion community celebration will certainly be an event on the Cooroy calendar not to be missed.

COOROY RAG

A mother’s love pushes the boundaries ON June 15, 1976 a beautiful baby boy was born at St. George hospital NSW. Life for husband Chris and mother Sue was about to change, having been told their son Clinton Stanley was born with Down syndrome. After the initial shock and a river of tears, they were told they didn’t have to take him home, that they had the option of leaving him at the hospital. This thought never occurred to Sue and Chris, they had been waiting for six years to have a baby and they wanted to take him home. It didn’t take long before Chris and Sue invited parents who had similar problems into their home for a chat and cuppa. These morning tea sessions were a great comfort knowing they were not alone, giving each other much needed support and direction. The news soon spread and numbers grew, too many for Sue and Chris’s small home. So it wasn’t long before Sue approached the Mayor of their local council for much needed funds to start an Activity Group. The Revesby Activity Group for Handicapped Children commenced on February, 1977 at Revesby Pre-School Kindergarten. The group met each Monday and started with 15 families enrolled with a paid Occupational Therapist. At this time Clinton was also enrolled in the Macquarie University Early Intervention Program where he attended until he started Kindergarten at Greys Point School. Sue became a Mum for the second time with son Ben and once the boys were off to school she became involved in the Family Day Care for Handicapped Children. Sue volunteered to care for a little 3 year old girl, Kelly with severe brain damage, once a week to give her

Mum a much needed break. Sue also worked in a restaurant 3 days a week and four nights, Chris and Sue worked together hand in hand “so to speak. It wasn’t until Chris, Sue, Clinton and Ben moved to Queensland that Sue started more voluntary work. Sue started volunteering work for Special Olympics in 1993 and has continued to do voluntary work with people with intellectual disabilities until the present day. She has held many committee positions over several years on the Sunshine Coast including Media Person, Uniform Coordinator, Secretary, Vice-Chairperson and Chairperson. As a member of the State Management Committee for Special Olympics Queensland, Sue held the position of Regional Delegate for the Sunshine Coast Region and Director of Families and Volunteers for many years. Sue was Games Director for the Sunshine Coast Region’s Spring Weekend Games, she co-ordinated sports for athletes from all over Queensland. Following this she started a tennis program for Special Olympics at Nambour and as Queensland’s Team Manager, attended the Special Olympics NSW Invitational State Tennis Games in Sydney in 1996. As Queensland Delegate she attended the Special Olympics National Conference in Launceston, Tasmania in 1997. In the same year, as Games Director for a two day Special Olympics Queensland Invitational State Games, she co-ordinated tennis and athletic competitions for athletes attending from all over Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. This position continued for several State and Regional Games in Queensland for swimming and tennis. In 1998 Sue attended the Queensland State Training Camp and Team Building weekend on the Gold Coast and following this travelled to the Special Olympics National Games in Hobart as Team Manager and Assistant Coach for tennis. In 1999, Sue started a tennis program for Special Olympics in Eumundi. Both the Nambour and Eumundi tennis programs are still operating today. She was also Games Director for the first Special Olympics Invitational National Basketball Games held at Caloundra with athletes participating from ACT, NSW, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. In 2000 Sue became Special Olympics Queensland Director of Tennis which involved ‘come and try tennis days’ and two day annual camps for athletes. In this same year she was involved in forming a committee for USM to launch the first Noosa Triathlon for people with disabilities and is still an active member of this event each year. In 2001 Sue was asked to present at the Special Olympics Queensland State Games Workshop in Brisbane and became Tournament Director for the Queensland State Tennis Games which made selections for the National Games in 2002 in Sydney. Sue attended these games as Team Manager for the

Queensland Aquatic Team. In 2003 Sue had a well earned rest and travelled overseas with her husband Chris and son Clinton. With coaching from Sue, Clinton participated in several Masters Swimming Championships in England winning many medals. In more recent times, Sue became aware of the formation of an organisation called Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) in England. This organisation was formed for swimmers with Down syndrome to compete at an International level. The next World Championships were to be held in Durban South Africa. Sue contacted organizers in Durban for more information and a team was made up of 5 swimmers, one of them was Clinton and 2 coaches from Queensland. With only four months preparation and great excitement the Australian team and their families travelled to Durban South Africa in 2004 with Sue as Coach and Team Manager. Despite the size of the team, they returned home triumphant with world records, many medals and personal best times. A segment was aired on National television “A Current Affair which recognized the swimmers. Following the success of the team, Sue wanted to share the opportunity with swimmers with Down syndrome throughout Australia. Momentum gathered for the formation of an Australian wide organisation that could assist the development of people with Down syndrome, through the sport of swimming and competition. In January 2005 with the support of some dedicated parents and coaches, the Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation (DSDUSO) was formed with Sue as Chairperson, a position she still holds today. The National Body (DSDUSO) now has state delegates from New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. Since formation of DSDUSO, notable people have pledged their support in various ways. Continued page 5 X #OOROY -AY & PDF 0-

Whenever I need to find a phone number for one of our fabulous local businesses or restaurants, I always initially reach for the current or earlier copy of the Cooroy Rag. Without fail I always find the number I need, and tend to find a little bit more about that business in the process when I once again read their advert. BRICKBATS to the mail contractors and parcel deliverers who park in the disabled car parks around town, especially the one and only one out in front of the post office, as I am in a wheelchair and need a larger space to get my wheelchair out, a car space is not big enough. Please have some manners and think of us, if they are taken I have to go home and come back again. The door needs a total new skin and spray painting. I am a self funded retiree, I don’t need this. You did not have the guts or courtesy to leave me your contact info. BRICKBATS to the 11 year old, who I pulled up last Monday afternoon for riding his skateboard down Emerald Street (centre line) and having to swing between two reversing cars. In 2007 Australia was selected to attend the Invitational Asia Pacific Games in Taiwan. Seventeen swimmers attended, returning with 18 Gold, 15 Silver, 14 Bronze and 8 World Records. As Team Manager, Sue Stanley is a driving force for swimmers on the team who are encouraged to reach their potential by long hours of training to produce outstanding results for themselves and Australia. The swimmers are wonderful ambassadors for Australia and wear their uniforms with great pride and confidence. The next World Swimming Championships will be held in Loano Italy 2012. As parents Chris and Sue would not have dared to dream that their son Clinton, World Champion swimmer would become the pride of their family, community and nation when he was born all those years ago. The DSDUSO will be hosting the Inaugural National Swimming Championships and Novice Challenge and Sue is the meet director. This will be held at the Noosa Aquatic Centre on 24th-25th September, 2011. This is a new initiative of the DSDUSO and is expected to be an exciting weekend with many swimmers nominated from all over Australia and New Zealand. In Sue’s own words: “As a volunteer I am asked many times why do I do what I do! That is easy to answer. Being there and seeing the athletes achieve at their chosen sport is all the reward I need. It is very precious and it is something I will always hold close to my heart. Cooroy STP upgrade

INITIAL works to prepare for an improved, more environmentally-friendly sewage treatment plant at Cooroy, are about to commence. As part of the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) upgrade, a small area of non-remnant vegetation adjacent to the existing plant will be cleared and fenced. Unitywater Project Manager, Infrastructure Delivery, David Goodall said all necessary measures would be taken to protect the environment during vegetation clearing. The existing Cooroy STP is nearing 40 years of age and the planned upgrade will ensure continued compliance with environmental license requirements and cater for future population growth. The $15 million upgrade is part of Unitywater’s commitment to protecting the environment and providing a quality, reliable sewage treatment service to Sunshine Coast residents. The Development Application for the project was approved by council in May 2010 and construction will commence in November this year, with commissioning expected to be complete by December 2012. let’s talk hair

AT a small donation ceremony on Tuesday 7th June, the craft group ‘Patches of Cooroy’ handed a cheque for $1500 to the Cancer Council Queensland, funds that were raised mostly through the Biggest Morning Tea held in May. Jodi Durkin, the Council’s Regional Fundraising Co-ordinator, accepted the cheque from Brenda Shipp, a Patches of Cooroy member who is a breast cancer survivor. Patches of Cooroy meets for fun and friendship each Tuesday in the CWA Rooms in Maple Street Cooroy. On September 3rd and 4th 2011, the group will hold its biennial Quilt Show at the Memorial Hall, Maple Street, Cooroy displaying a wide variety of their craft output, from quilts of all sizes to bags, cushions, wall-hangings, embroideries, and examples of other crafts. Home made morning and afternoon tea will be available. Open from 10am to 4pm, the show will be a fantastic display of member’s work, so if you are in the area pop in and take a look. Looking for growth Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy A QUICK glance at statistics by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirms any amount of anecdotal evidence about the economy’s fastestgrowing industry sectors: • Mining • Healthcare • Financial services (especially superannuation) • Property and business services • Communications and information technology (IT) • Tourism and Hospitality With the exception of mining and healthcare, and communications to a lesser extent, much of the economic activity in these sectors is the domain of the entrepreneur, the small business or the consultant. The reasons for these sectors’ dominance are not surprising. The world cannot get enough of our resources. China’s frenetic growth sparked the mining boom and an emerging India is ensuring it continues. In particular, it’s our high-

quality coal and iron ore they want. An ageing generation of cashed-up baby boomers will demand the medical technology that diagnoses disease earlier, find cures and improves quality of life. The issue for governments, of course, will be how to fund healthcare as the population ages. As fears of terrorism intensify, companies want to know their people and equipment are safe and their data and intellectual property are protected, and companies are springing up to meet this demand. Managing people’s money at all stages in their life cycle – housing, business, investment and superannuation – is a growth industry that can only get bigger. In the late 1990s, communications and information technology – especially the Internet – were going to transform business; then came the tech wreck of 2000. Today, IT is back bigger than ever as companies, large and small, embrace it. No longer is IT just a way to cut costs; it is

becoming a competitive point of difference in how to attract and keep customers. And the insatiable appetite of business for better and faster communications shows no sign of abating. In business services and hospitality, it reflects a society that has moved from a “do-ityourself” to a “do-it-forme” mentality. For example, a quarter of all household functions are outsourced today, generating significant spending on goods and services. And a younger generation, in particular, is far more interested in building their own businesses to meet this demand than chasing a lifelong career in one company.

POWER line meeting in Parliament: We made some more progress on our fight against the proposed Powerlink project (Woolooga to West Cooroy power line) in Parliament, when representatives from PAGE and Noosa Biosphere joined me to meet with representatives from the Energy Minister’s office and the Energy Sector Monitoring Unit. I organised the meeting so we could clearly explain to the Energy Sector Monitoring Unit and the Government, that our community is concerned about the independence of this unit to investigate this matter without bias. As a result of our meeting we received a commitment from the Government that, once this unit receives the Powerlink application, and before finishing its considerations of the proposal, PAGE representatives will have an opportunity to speak to their written submission. Morning tea raises funds for cancer: Congratulations to the Belli Hall Committee, led by Neville and Margaret Long, who raised a fantastic $2000 for cancer at a morning tea fundraiser. Jenny and Mum went along while I was in Parliament. They both had a great time catching up with friends, enjoying a delicious morning tea and joining in the community singing led by everyone’s favourite Rex Egmolese. John Goldsborough paid tribute to Joy Hunt, our neighbour who passed away recently and who held the first of the cancer morning teas in Belli Park 20 years ago. A good crowd attended, including visitors from Cooroy. Object now to inflated land valuations: I urge all land owners living in the Sunshine Coast hinterland areas to make an objection to the Government land valuations they would have received recently. It was clear that the Government paid inflated prices for the properties it purchased for the proposed Traveston Dam, and unfortunately the new valuations are based on the effect these inflated prices had on the real estate market. These inflated valuations will directly affect the cost of your Council rates and Government land tax. Everyone needs to lodge an objection, arguing that these prices are based on the Government’s inflated purchase prices of Mary Valley properties, and the valuations cannot be used as realistic land valuations. Land

owners need to lodge their objections before July 4. Objection forms are available on the DERM website: www.derm.qld.gov.au/ property/valuations/objections.html Push continues to quash Yandina Quarry proposal: Senior staff from the Deputy Premier’s office have made it clear that the Government will not intervene in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council deliberation over the unpopular Yandina Creek Quarry proposal at this stage. Staff advised me and a delegation from the Yandina Creek Progress Association that the Government would not call in this application until they have had a chance to consider Council’s decision. I have asked what the minimum criteria would be for the government to intervene in this application, and department staff have committed to getting back to me to advise on what grounds the government would consider reviewing this application or the Council’s decision (should Council approve the quarry). New Committee System: During Parliamentary sittings in May, agreement was reached to radically change how Parliament operates. The new Committee System will see all proposed new changes to our laws go to an all-party committee before Parliament can vote on the new laws. It makes no difference whether the proposed new law is introduced by an ALP, NLP or an Independent member. These new all-party committees will be able to hold public hearings, question public servants, and make recommendations for changes to the proposed law if they feel this is appropriate. It is disappointing that the Government and Opposition refused to support the Independent Members’ proposal to allow the committees to initiate investigations into important government issues. I believe that if these committees were able to independently initiate such investigations, it would enable them to look into cases like the Patel case, and prevent such injustices from getting out of hand. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, July 14, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 54416933.

Apply now for help with day-to-day expenses THE Coast’s community groups can apply for financial help with day-to-day operational expenses under Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Partnership Funding Program. Not-for-profit groups are encouraged to apply in one of nine categories, including the two new Cultural Heritage and Economic Development categories. Community Policy and Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council is keen to hear from groups who can partner with council to achieve its vision for a sustainable region. “This partnership program is great because it includes longer-term funding agreements for up to three years, to give partner groups greater certainty of funding and the chance to plan ahead. “Council is keen to hear from organisations whose services and support deliver the greatest benefit to the community, and that play an active role in making our region the best it can be. “Groups like the region’s three volunteer Coast Guard services, who were each successful in receiving a partnership with council last year to fund their essential search and rescue services. “Or the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge who last year, secured a three-year partnership deal with council to make sure they can continue to re-home the region’s cats and dogs. “I invite groups to take advantage of this opportunity and encourage them to seek support from a council grants officer to ensure their application is the best it can be.” Applications open on Monday 23 May and close on Friday 24 June 2011. Community groups are encouraged to call a grants officer on 5441 8616 and can apply online at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants in the categories of: · Community Capital; Community Facilities; Community Pools; Cultural Development; Cultural Heritage; Economic Development; Emergency Services and Community Safety; Environment; Sport and Recreation.

Sunshine Coast Council delivering a better road network THE Sunshine Coast has over 690 kilometres of gravel roads – many through the Hinterland – providing vital links for commuters, personal and business users. At a special budget meeting recently Sunshine Coast Council endorsed a 10-year $25 million capital works program which will guide the additional sealing and replacement of gravel on existing gravel roads over the next decade. In the 2011/12 financial year council expects to spend $2 million turning high priority gravel roads into sealed

roads and $1 million on the replacement and upgrade of gravel on the existing unsealed network. On top of this council is expected to spend in excess of $6 million replacing timber bridges throughout the hinterland to maintain and enhance the road network. This is good news for business, individuals and tourists who frequently access and enjoy the Sunshine Coast hinterland. To find out more about what council does go to www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

PERMACULTURE Noosa will meet at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Thursday, June 16. Doors open and market stalls at 7.00pm, talks begin at approximately 7.30pm. The first speaker will be Kate Coupe, who will talk about her work at Odanadi to help women and children establish a permaculture garden. Odanadi is a grassroots organisation based in Mysore, South India, which is working to combat human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and bonded labour. Odanadi believes building relationships is the most effective way to fight human trafficking at its source. By mobilizing local communities, schools, students, police, grassroots organizations and the judiciary, Odanadi aims to create a people’s movement against this abuse. It

also seeks to tackle all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence and child marriages. Kate is currently back home in Australia but says, “The seeds we planted the last day I was there have all started sprouting and the established plants are looking a lot more healthier. The second speakers will be Andrew Maitland and Dee Humphreys who will talk about pruning fruit trees. Andrew is a qualified horticulturist and arborist (AGM Horticulture, sustainable tree and garden care). Dee is a self–confessed “megahacker and no sort of expert pruner, but is happy to pass on the “crazy ideas that seem to work for her. Cost: Free, members and visitors welcome. Tea and coffee afterwards for a gold coin donation.

WHEN I speak to locals about utilising social media such as Facebook to promote their business, many responses are sceptical, but considering over 80% of businesses are now using Facebook as a marketing platform, the trend is clear and the pace is accelerating! Discovering social media such as Facebook and Twitter, as marketing strategies, transforms one’s whole approach to doing business. It is not a matter of whether to do it or not‌.it is actually essential. And the reason? Because it is the new word-of-mouth way of advertising. Anyone who has been in a bricks and mortar business knows that both negative and positive word-of-mouth is very powerful. Today, it has become at least 100 times more so, as the average person on Facebook, for example, has over 130 friends, and each of them also, and so on. So your good (or bad) service or product, can become broadly known, just at the click of a mouse. Social media really is a marketing revolution - it is the 21st century way of attracting and connecting with others, some of whom may become paying customers. Further, most of the tools in social media are free – yes, free, or at a fraction of the cost of some other forms of advertising! Begin right now! Register on Facebook, set up a Personal Profile, then become an Administrator of your own Facebook Page and begin to attract Fans who are potential customers. Facebook limits you to 5000 friends on your personal page but you may have unlimited fans on your Business Page! Let your imagination grasp the potential of that for your business, whether online or offline. So make a plan for establishing your very own community around your business. Good planning from the outset will: help your targeted customers find you; have those customers return for more; incentivise those customers to tell their friends so your marketing goes ‘viral’! Mother nature mellows but weather warnings remain STAY prepared. That’s the message from Sunshine Coast Council despite reports of an end to Queensland’s recent extreme weather. Disaster Management Chair, Cr Tim Dwyer said locals should remain alert for possible natural disasters during the coming months. “The Bureau of Meteorology has announced an end to the La Nina climate phenomenon that brought record breaking rainfalls, devastating floods and cyclones to Queensland but that doesn’t mean that we can afford to become complacent when it comes to mother nature, he said. “History shows that some of the Sunshine Coast’s heaviest rainfall periods have occurred during the winter months, including flooding in the Noosa River area in August 2007. Cr Dwyer said all residents should pre-

pare household emergency plans, just in case. “The January floods showed just how quickly tragedies can happen so it’s vital that everyone is prepared for anything mother nature can produce, he said. Emergency Management Queensland area director Andrew Wyatt said there were four simple steps residents should take to ensure they’re prepared. “The first step involves researching hazards and disaster management arrangements in your community. This involves considering potential hazards which may impact your community. You can find this information through contacting your local council, he said. “The second step involves discussing possible scenarios and responses in your household; for example what you’ll all do in the event of each emergency, how you’ll keep in touch if family members are sepa-

rated and how you’ll alll prepare for evacuation. “The third step is all important and related to recording important details for your emergency plan. This should include emergency numbers, medical services, local council, electricity and other service providers, insurance providers, relatives, friends and each householders’ personal contact details. “The fourth step involves preparing an emergency kit and storing it in a safe and accessible place. All households should review and practise their emergency plan three times a year, taking into account the changing needs of all members of the family. For more information print out a copy of the Household Emergency Plan Checklist at http://www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/ css/emergencyplanchecklist.asp.

Does your pet need to go to the dentist?

ONE of the most frequently asked questions we get here at Sunshine Coast Vets is “What can I do to make my pets breath smell better?“. The answer quite simply is “Clean their teeth”, however there are many more reasons to clean a dog or cat’s teeth than just getting rid of the unpleasant aroma of bad breath.

Dental disease affects all pets to some degree without regular teeth cleaning. The “bad breath” pets get is due entirely to the buildup of nasty bacteria which over time form a thick layer called “tartare”. This tartare extends up under the gum line and as these bacteria multiply damaging substances are released

which cause painful inflammation to the gums. Whilst your pet may appear normal and not “complain” effectively this gum disease or “gingivitis” as it is called is like us having ulcers throughout our mouth. Whilst we may meet friends for dinner and get on with our daily routine inflammation in the mouth is painful and annoying and causes ongoing discomfort until healed. Once the teeth are cleaned and relieved of this bacterial coating the gum health improves and uncomfortable inflammation disappears making for a much happier mouth and animal. From a long term point of view the effects of tartare buildup are far more serious than just bad breath. Bacteria from dirty teeth enter the blood through the gums and cause a blocking up effect on the kidneys which in the long term can contribute to kidney failure and even death. These nasty bacteria can also stick to the heart valves causing cauliflower like growths to grow here causing a

deadly condition known as “valvular endocarditis”. “At Sunshine Coast Vets at Pomona we pride ourselves and enjoy taking a very proactive approach to treating and preventing dental disease. We have state of the art dental and anaesthetic equipment which allows us to safely scale and polish your pets teeth making them squeaky clean. All dental procedures are performed under general unaesthetic and include Intravenous fluids, pain relief and antibiotics.” All pets should have a dental checkup at least once per year. This can be done at any time usually coinciding with vaccination , heart worm injection or other routine procedures. Commonly asked questions: Will my pet need to stay overnight? No. Dentals do involve a general anaesthetic but are performed as a day procedure so your pet will be ready to go home the same afternoon. What if my pet is old? Will it be too dangerous for him to have an anaesthetic? No. In most cases if your dog’s heart and

lungs are functioning well enough to walk up the street or chase a ball they are more than capable of coping with an anaesthetic procedure. All animals anaesthetized at Sunshine Coast Vets are placed on Intravenous fluids as standard procedure. This helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure throughout the procedure as well as supporting liver and kidney function. This is done at no extra cost. How much will it cost? A standard scale and polish costs $180 and includes sedation prior to the procedure, pain relief, Intravenous fluid therapy prior to and throughout the procedure and a long acting antibiotic injection. Buzz, Brooke ,Brooke and Selina are more than happy to answer any other questions or concerns you have regarding your pets teeth or any other general pet queries or health questions you may have. We look forward to meeting you and your pets and to keep their happy white smiles for longer. Phone Sunshine Coast Vets on 5485 0088.

COOROY RAG Community Newspaper

Beware of things that go bump in the night! THE first string of cold nights has traditionally sent every rat or mouse in the district straight into our roof cavities. Combine that with an exceptionally high summer rainfall and you have conditions that have caused the highest rodent population Eastern Australia has seen in nearly 20 years. You only have to do a Google search for “Mouse plague 2011” and a host of links to recent newspaper articles pops up. As a pest controller myself I have experienced a dramatic increase in rodent related work and many of my suppliers are struggling to meet the demand for rodent control products. With Cooroy, Eumundi, Cootharaba and Peregian Springs areas being dominated by mice whereas Doonan, Noosa, and Sunrise Beach areas being dominated by rats. There reputation as a pest is legendary because of their ability to contaminate and spoil food, spread disease, and cause physical damage combined with the prolific rate at which they reproduce. The biggest concern for homeowners is a rodents habit of chewing electrical wiring often causing dangerous conditions and expensive repairs. Another factor which many people aren’t aware of is the fact that rodents are incontinent which means they basically dribble urine where ever they go, including your kitchen bench. Another misconception is “it’s okay coz

they’re native rats”. The fact is native rats generally avoid human habitation and the culprit is often the introduced Rattus rattus, commonly called the Black or Roof Rat which is very different in appearance to the typical introduced Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus which most people associate with. The other fact that most homeowners underestimate is the extent of the problem. 1 or 2 rats living in your roof go about their daily routine peacefully and quietly causing minimal noise , however when these rats reproduce and their young begin to reach maturity , that’s when dominance and territory jostles begin and the typical “bump in night noises” begin. So if you’re hearing or seeing rodent activity, then you’ve got a problem that needs to be dealt with. Unfortunately controlling a rodent population is limited to traps and baits for the homeowner, with traps typically only controlling the “young and dumb“ individuals. Baiting with rodent baits available from your local supermarket can often be enough to control a small or recent infestation. For more persistent activity it’s perhaps best to engage the services of a professional such as myself. For more information or tips on rodent control check out www.lagunapestcontrol.com.au or phone Jay Turner at Laguna Pest Control on 5449 1765, mobile 0409 217 328.

Jim and Ida Duncan - In Memoriam THE lives of two of Noosa’s best-known and most-loved personalities will be celebrated next Saturday (18th June) in a double ceremony at the Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre in Cooroy. Jim and Ida Duncan were well known throughout Noosa and the surrounding area for their selfless dedication to charitable and benevolent causes over a period of more than 30 years – Ida as an outgoing and generous hostess to, and organiser of, a multitude of fund-raising events and projects; Jim as a dedicated Rotarian, enthusiastic and experienced private pilot, vintage car lover, and erstwhile adventurer. He was a charter member of both the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club (his 1924 vintage Bentley was almost as iconic as Jim himself!) and was, in every sense of the word, a “one-off, known to many, loved by all who knew him. Both Jim, who died earlier this year after a long illness, and Ida, who passed away in 2009, will be remembered for their tireless endeavours to help make Noosa a better, happier place in which to live. Their joint efforts on behalf of its citizens enriched the lives of all those touched by their magic. Although Saturday June 18th has been designated “Jim’s day, it will also give all of those attending the opportunity to commemorate Ida’s role not only in Jim’s life, but in the development of the amphitheatre and the Botanical Gardens in which it stands. A separate ceremony will see the unveiling of a specially-commissioned plaque officially renaming this unique outdoor venue the “Ida Duncan Memorial Amphitheatre. A tree-planting ceremony will then fol-

low in honour of Jim and a plaque in his memory will be unveiled in the Botanical Garden by the lakeside overlooking ‘Billabong’, their beloved home for many years. Presidents and members of Rotary Clubs from Noosa and other Sunshine Coast centres have all been invited to attend, and all those who knew Jim and Ida, and who want to come to celebrate two lives well lived, or just to say goodbye, are welcome. Members of the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club – of which Jim was the proud bearer of membership card Number 8 – will form a guard of honour with their vintage and clas-

sic steeds lining the walkway between the Amphitheatre and the location for the treeplanting ceremony. Jim made innumerable friends and colleagues during his long and interesting life, many of whom will have tales to tell, tributes to express and anecdotes to relate. If you are one of those wishing to say a few words in Jim’s memory please contact Rod Thomas of the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads on 0417 802159 and let him know so that he can allocate you the appropriate time to speak and include your name on the program. Two Cooroy Scouts earn Scout Medallion Award CONGRATULATIONS to James Hardcastle and Brendan Williams on earning their Scout Medallions! This is an achievement that Cooroy Scout Group has not seen since 2004 when our last scout medallion was presented. We can all be very proud of these two scouts and I’m sure anyone who has spent time with them would agree. They have made a huge effort in the scout section to achieve to the highest level they could achieve and are very deserving of this award. Their final achievement in the scout section on the path to the scout medallion was a hike from Baroon Pocket dam to Gheerulla near Kenilworth over 4 days without adult assistance. They certainly met the challenge and ensured that the rest of their patrol did too in spite of appalling weather and challenging conditions. It was a great achievement to finish off their final year in the scout section. Cooroy Scout Group celebrated the achievement with a special parade, games, a giant cake made by Ritchies Bakery Cooroy and lots of delicious supper prepared by the parents. The parade was attended by our District Commissioner Pam Budge who was our guest speaker. James and Brendan have now gone up to the older venturer section and are already planning many new adventures.

WORLD renowned wood turner/ carver, Neil Scobie conducted a workshop at the Cooroora Woodworkers Clubhouse, Lower Mill Road, on the weekend of June 4/5. Many of the local Cooroora Woodworker’s availed themselves of the opportunity to learn new skills from such a gifted teacher and demonstrator as Neil. The workshop was made available to other clubs in the shire such as Caloundra and Blackall Range. Our aim being to lift the standard of woodcraft throughout the region and to learn new skills and techniques. The workshop was made possible by an RADF grant received from the joint venture between the

Sunshine Coast Council, and the State Government, which covered much of the cost involved. Councillor Lew Brennan on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council, opened the workshop expressing the importance that Council placed on the continuance of woodworking in general and its outreach into the community. Carol Christensen also present, represented the Lower Mill Board and Library precinct. The workshop was voted an outstanding success by all. Many thanks must be given to the ladies who worked so hard in catering for the occasion.

Cooroora Vet Clinic backs a winner! THE inaugural crowning of the Conondale Princess took place on April 9th. The girls who entered ranged in ages from six through to 21 with a total number of 18 young ladies dressed to impress for this wonderful event. Whilst there was a feeling of friendship throughout the night, competition between the girls was tough. The judges on the night were Andrew Powell (State Member for Glasshouse), Mr Jim and Mrs Sandra Goulton (Maleny Showcase Jewellers) and Bobbi-Jo Blake (Current NRA Rodeo Queen). The level at which these girls took this competition was extremely high which did make the judging very hard. The Junior Section had 11

young girls and our Overall Winner was Miss Audrey Rose Torrielli who was sponsored by Cooroora Vet Clinic of Cooroy. Audrey Rose charmed the judges with her calmness and confidence throughout her interview and presentation. The poise and presentation of all girls on the night was a direct reflection of their families and community in which they reside. The impression that the girls left on the judges was one of sheer pleasure to know that all entrants truly believed in themselves and also Conondale and its surrounding areas. With this level of confidence and respect, we can rest assured that the strong community bonds are firmly cemented within our younger generation.

police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

Opposite the Butter Factory A VERY distressed young man attended the police station last week with his father and reported his pride a joy (skateboard) stolen from the Cooroy State School on Thursday the 26th of May, 2011. The skateboard is described as an ‘Original’ brand Pintail 37 Long Board which is coloured Black and Purple. (see the attached photo) The skateboard was stolen between school hours and other children are thought to have taken the board. The Cooroy Blue Light Disco will pay a cash reward to anyone who can provide information to police that leads to the return of the skateboard and return the smile to the young mans face. Information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 1800333000 or by phoning the Cooroy Police Station on 54425030. A reasonably large sum of money was found on Friday the 27th of May in Wattle street, Cooroy. The finder has been honest enough to report the money as being found so if you believe that you are the owner of that money which was lost on the 27th then contact the police station and if you can name the amount you lost and can prove the money is your property then it can be returned. The tragic death of a “Boy in Blue” has hit the Queensland Police Service hard with the tragic death of Senior Constable Damien Leeding who was killed whilst responding to a hostage situation linked with an armed robbery offence. Typically, the Cooroy community has responded with a steady stream of well wishers attending the station to offer there sympathy and support. The Cooroy Station has so far raised $300 by selling police remembrance ribbons with all money raised to go to Damien’s young family. Thank you to the Cooroy IGA for helping out with the sale of the ribbons and hosting a police remembrance day. Lyn Johansson, you’re a treasure. Also thank you to three gorgeous young children, Poet, Walu and Steel and their Mum who came in with three sympathy cards and a lovely box of chocolates. To quote one of the cards written by the children, “Dear Police Men. I am soroy for one of your men has died now his kids will de sad. I hope they fel deter soon.” (Spelling mistakes includedJ)….and to Mum, the quiver in my lower lip when I read the lovely cards was brought on by me trying to restrain myself from eating the whole box of chocolates rather than any welling of emotion? The Cooroy Police also hosted an Armed Robbery Awareness Night which was held at the Cooroy Hotel last Monday Night. Approximately 50 business owners and there staff members attending and took part in a very informative night with the main mes-

sage being to be fully compliant with any demands that the offender may make and to remain calm whilst taking in as mush information as possible to assist police with identifying the offender. Senior Constable Mark Readman of the Crime Prevention Unit in Maroochydore passed on some useful tips to the community on how to make their businesses less attractive targets and how to target harden there premises. Thanks go to the Manager of the Cooroy Hotel, Nikki MacDonald for supplying the venue for the night. Hoons continue to menace our streets with burnouts appearing on several streets around town. Please continue to report any instances that you may witness with an accurate description of the car involved and full registration details if possible. I can promise that we will do everything possible to try and identify the vehicle and driver with the end result being a trip to court and the confiscation of the offending motor car. Also, those of you who travel on the Cooroy Noosa Road and regularly drive through the 80km/h zone on the Tinbeerwah hill will have notice radar being conducted on this section of road. Please stick to the speed limit as Infringement Notices are being issued on a regular basis to drivers exceeding the 80km/h speed limit. I know there will be people reading this article and there immediate reaction will be that it’s just “revenue raising” by the police and that speed enforcement serves no useful purpose. This is certainly not the case. An example of how speed enforcement has worked is the dramatic decrease in fatal and serious accidents on the Bruce Hwy between Cooroy and Gympie. Police regularly patrol the Highway targeting Life Endangering Offences. 18 months ago we were regularly issuing five to six infringement notices a shift however now we rarely have to issue a single ticket as the vast majority of drivers stick to the 90km/h limit as they don’t want to risk a fine. This increased speed compliance has had the end result of decreasing accidents and helping to save lives on our roads.

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years

The Cooroy Pot Hole Rock

by Carol Watkins, Group Leader, Cooroy S.E.S. THIS time of year is generally quieter for us as far as our main activity, storm damage, goes. Motor vehicle accidents are with us though at all times of the year. However, it gets even busier with events. In May we had a team of 6 undertaking traffic control at the International Rally of Queensland where the rally cars came into the Cooroy Library precinct for a short stop before leaving on the next leg of their journey. Then we had a team of 5 at Cooroy Fusion, again at the Library precinct, once again undertaking traffic control duties. The day was a huge success going by the numbers who attended and indications are it will continue in the same vein over the coming years. On 26th of June the Noosa Festival of Water will once again be held at Lake Macdonald Botanical Gardens and we are in the process of organising a team to look after parking at this terrific event. This year, we are lending the organisers one of our flood boats to

take people across and around the lake. We have been advised that Stan Ryan, a Cooroy local known to many in our community, has been confirmed in the position of Local Controller for the Noosa S.E.S. which comprises SES Groups in Cooroy, Pomona, Tewantin and Boreen Point. Stan has been in the SES for around 30 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he has been sharing with us over the years so we are confident that under his leadership, we will be able to continue to assist residents to the best of our ability. We will be conducting an intake of new members in July, so anyone who would like to enquire about joining us, please call me on 0427 349218. For any other information on the local SES please call for Cooroy, Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102. TAKE a trip to the tip on Black Mountain Road, A wiggle a waggle, oh sh- what a pity, Past the footy club, damn There goes another cap for my hub Keep to the centre, no, better keep right I’m so glad I’m not on a motorbike. Back over the bridge, eight pot holes impossible to miss. Then on to Tewantin, weave or cause a fountain to splash, And there goes more cash for shredded tyres down to the wires. Bits of stone embedding. Now, where was I heading? Oh yes, down the hill, remember near the top A huge one in shadow, leaving a margin so narrow. Follow the car in front, he knows the spot. So on with my journey, doing the Pot Hole Rock! If I take care, I suppose I’ll get there. Tricia Milner, Cooroy

dining & entertainment Festival celebrates region’s waterways

COOROY RAG

SET amongst the beautiful surrounds of the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre, the 2011 Noosa Festival of Water is once again celebrating the Noosa Biosphere and this region’s unique ecological features with a day of entertainment and activities from 10am on Sunday 26 June. Hosted by the Lake Macdonald Catchment Care Group, the festival is also a part of the Sun-

shine Coast Council’s Green June program of events. Deb Seal from the Lake Macdonald Catchment Care group explains there is something for everyone with a wide range of educational displays and activities, live music presentations and local and international food available. “We are excited to have some new presentations this year including top local Chef Dale Chapman, who will be teaching people how

to cook bush tucker using traditional methods including smoking meats and fish. Also in the Amphitheatre, Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife will educate and captivate both young and old with his collection of live native animals. Martin is one of the festival’s most popular attractions. Allan Burnett’s ‘Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia’ will also be providing educational

awareness demonstrations throughout the day on how to avoid snake bites and the latest first aid treatment in relation to snake bites. There are plenty of free activities on the lake such as boat trips to the Cod Hatchery and the Noosa Water Treatment plant, ‘Take a Kid a Sailing’, rowing demonstrations, learn to paddle a canoe with qualified instructors and the free kid’s fishing clinic. New displays

being welcomed to the festival this year include the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, which is working towards returning the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly to its former range in South East Queensland and Peregian group Veggie Village who will provide advice to rural and urban landholders who want to grow their own fruit and veggies. Representatives of Valley Bees will also be handing out information about how to nurture and maintain Bees in our environment. “Also, residents of the Noosa Biosphere who bring a current rate notice will be able to choose two seedlings from the Noosa Landcare display, and if you bring along a 500ml sample of your dam, creek or bore water the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee will test the samples for free. It all makes for a great day out whilst appreciating the local environment in which we live. Cooran State School U8s Day

Great turnout for networking night ON 7 June, the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce held a networking night targeted at getting tradies and home based business owners to network with others in the local community. The night was a great success with over 70 people attending at the Cooroy Bowls Club. Great “Turnout for Networking NightThe hinterland is home to thousands of home based businesses from tradies to online businesses and often nobody even knows they are there. “And because they aren’t located near other businesses, they often aren’t as linked into what is happening in their local area. “Nights like these give them a support network

– it is really amazing some of the different types of businesses we have located right here in Cooroy. “With one of the current business trends being to buy local to help support the local economy, we thought it would help to hold a networking night specifically aimed at getting home based businesses to network with each other and other businesses,” said Seb Vecchio, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council also got behind the concept, providing sponsorship as part of a broader “Connecting Business Connecting Communities” strategy of the Cooroy Chamber which

is also aimed at strengthening ties between Eumundi, Cooroy and Pomona. The new look Cooroy Website – www.cooroy.

COORAN State School had a wonderful morning celebrating the joy of being under 8. The 2011 theme of “Bush to Beach: Let them Grow” provided an opportunity for the children to learn through experiences that acknowledge our environment. We had 90 school children face painting, mask making, bush collage, reading stories, making bracelets and much more. At the end of the activity time, the children had a shared sausage sizzle that was welcomed. Over the morning we had many parents and younger siblings who joined in the fun. Mr Teakle made some wonderful murals for the children to put their faces through. We are very lucky at Cooran to have so many talented people, staff, parents and children alike. Thanks to Sue Hanly and her team who worked tirelessly to make the day such a success.

IT’S funny how the strangest things become so popular … like ‘planking’. As much as it’s now banned everywhere because of over zealous plankers planking to death, if you choose your location it seems to be quite a safe activity. Pretty sure it’s just lying across random objects on your stomach. My planking is done expertly on my bed, and after a particularly long business lunch, on the office floor. It’s the perfect sport for the lazy player. Now when asked what I did on the weekend, I no longer have to say I just laid around, I say “oh just a spot of planking”. I certainly did a lot of planking when I received my $1000 electricity bill last week. I’ve now turned into my father prowling through the house ranting “that’s six lights I’ve just turned off, the place is lit up like Christmas tree …obviously there are some adjectives I have left out there, and if expletives could generate power we’d be able to sell it back to the grid. I’ve also banned heaters this winter. There will be a lot of layering and, no doubt, a lot of screaming as the coldblooded member of the family (me) tries to stick my icy feet up everyone’s jumpers. So there you have it Locations, lazing and lights Tripping over a planker in the dark not my fave!

and Laos cuisine with emphasis on fresh, organically grown local herbs. The traditional indigenous ingredients used have a huge role to play in pharmacological varying from healthy digestion, skin beautification and toxin elimination, including body regeneration at cellular levels. “Let food be your medicine and medicine your food,” an ancient Greek philosopher foretold, long after the Thai principals were an inherent belief system and integral diet structure for life longevity. Noo is passionate about traditional indigenous Thai foods and medicine and was taught by her uncle, the local village’s Shaman, as a child growing up in North- East of Thailand, whose recipes and blends have been handed down by countless generations. Noo operates a small cooking school from the Cooroy restaurant and will expand the enterprise to foodies that are yearning to be educated on the culinary and health benefits of Thai herbs and spices. Subjects include but are not limited to: Growing/Cultivation/Identification; Preparing Foods for optimum Health Benefits; Cooking Secrets. One has to admire Noo’s knowledge of the local streetscape and bush environment when she explains that the local “Cordyline lily” was used as traditional bush tucker in Thailand and demonstrates how to peel, core and prepare the plant for a meal! Noo is currently compiling a book and video guide on the many uses and benefits of Thai herbs and spices. dining & entertainment The Big Marimba at Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre

COOROY RAG

SIX great marimba bands including JAMBEZI & Kkarimba will be playing at the Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre, Noosat Botanic Gardens, Cooroy on Sunday, June 19 from 2pm to 5pm … and it’s free! This happens only once a year and is a great afternoon for all the family This is the seventh annual Big Marimba Event. The first of these was in 2005 and celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Big Marimba Project in 1995 when 400 people from all over the Sunshine Coast built 320 metres of marimba that was set up across the Brisbane River attached to the handrail of the Victoria Bridge during the Brisbane Biennial (now the Qld Music Festival). A marimba is like a large xylophone and 2400 individual tone bars were cut and tuned and strung together to make this amazing musical installation. Sixteen years later the Sunshine Coast has become a “hotspot” for marimba activity with hundreds of people playing marimbas in schools and Community marimba bands. The Big Marimba Concert Celebrates this, with 6 Marimba bands per-

sive rhythmic cohesion that comes from a grounding in tradition, the experience of years playing together and having a great love for their music. For more info on Jambezi: http:// w w w. m i k e m e a d e . c o m / j a m b e z i / intro.html Another marimba band that will be performing are KKarimba who are a 20 piece band with 10 marimbas, 2 bass marimbas, 2 thongaphones, drumkit and sax - they play seriously funky grooves! A wonderful feature of this concert is the fantastic amphitheatre set in the Noosa Botanic gardens with Lake Macdonald as a superb backdrop. So come along for a great afternoon’s entertainment for all the family. forming at this fantastic free family event. The event features “Jambezi” who play joyous worldly rhythms that are guaranteed to get your body movin! They play seven Marimbas, Drum kit, Mbira (African thumb piano), Congas, Vocals & Percussion to create an undeniable call to DANCE DANCE DANCE! Inspired by the deliciously uncontainable grooves of Africa, a touch of Gypsy spirit and a dab of downtown disco, Jambezi’s unique style of vibrant and upbeat marimba music is unforgettable - an intensely alive and seriously uplifting marimba sound machine. King of the Mountain THE Pomona King of the Mountain Festival to be held Sunday 24th July 2011 is benefiting from funding under the Events Queensland Regional Development Program (EQRDP). The EQRDP is an investment program designed to extend the flow of economic and social benefits of events to regional Queensland. A state-wide initiative, the program

is committed to enhancing existing events in regional Queensland, as well as assisting in the establishment of new events. Since the EQRDP began in 2001, more than $16.4 million has been invested in 762 regional events, an indicator of the important role these events play in their communities and wider Queensland.

Noosa Museum Moments 2011 marks a very important occasion as far as the Noosa Museum is concerned. This area was originally included as part of the Widgee Divisional Board on November 11, 1879, under the Divisional Boards Act 1879. Then in 1910, Noosa Shire was created as a separate entity under the Local Authorities Act 1902. At that time, there was a population of 2000 people who were serviced by a half-a-mile of gravel road and four bridges. The first elections were held in April 1910 and as a result, James Duke was elected as the shire’s first Chairman. The council consisted of an elected mayor and nine Councillors—three representing Division One, which covered the vast majority of the Shire’s area, and two representing each of Di-

visions 2 (Tewantin and northern beaches), 3 (Noosaville) and 4 (southern beaches). The original headquarters of the Noosa Shire was built in Pomona with the first Council Meeting to be held in that particular building being conducted on September 13, 1911. This structure remained as the Council Office until 1980 when the Council shifted to Pelican Street, Tewantin. The building’s next life began in 1985 with the Cooroora Historical Society occupying the premises. Their mission was ‘to preserve what was rapidly disappearing of the past’ – and so it continues to this date. Therefore, come September – the Noosa Museum hopes to celebrate the Centennial Birthday of this fine old edifice.

Seeking expressions of interest THE Pomona & District Community House is asking for expressions of interest in Community Kitchen: Cooking for fun and friendship. Planning, budgeting, shopping healthy recipes. Men’s Shed: Would you be interested in establishing a Men’s Shed in

Pomona: Learn new skills, make friends, mentor others. All in the spirit of mateship. Community Garden: Do you have a passion for the environment and the community? Enjoy the fruits of your labour. For more information please phone 5485 2427.

Cooran Acoustic Night THE next Cooran Acoustic Night will be held on Saturday, June 18 at King Street Cooran, 7pm start. The Cooran Acoustic Night is going from strength to strength in 2011. The last event in May saw the largest crowds yet and 15 amazing performers getting up and strutting their stuff. The upcoming event in June promises to be another fantastic night full of wonderful performances from many local artists and musicians. This community event opens up the beautiful Cooran Hall stage for all budding and experienced artists to perform in front of a supportive crowd. Come along and experience live performance at its best. Bring your music, songs, poetry, dance, juggling

balls, ‘your performance piece’ and register on the blackboard on arrival. There are only five more nights planned for 2011 so come down and be a part of it. Rocks rolled for skate park re-vamp POMONA’S Skate Park is now getting a well-earned upgrading, refurbishment and extension. Regulars at the popular park should not have to wait more than two weeks to get back on their boards – as long as the weather gods are kind, that is. Rocks making up some of the adjacent paths will be removed as part of the works and will be stored for future use at another site to be determined. Some temporary fencing will remain up while the work is being carried out, divisional councillor Lew Brennan said. “The first thing I did when elected in 1997 was to build the skate park in Cooran,” he said. “Pomona came soon after and they’ve been buzzing ever since. “This upgrade will give the kids a much better park. “I know that this park is very popular – which means there is never a perfect time to get such work done,” he said. “But a short wait is worth the longer-term benefits.”

Asthma death prompts winter alert PEOPLE with asthma are being urged to take their condition seriously this winter as new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics highlights concerning levels of asthma-related deaths. The latest Australian asthma death toll recorded 411 deaths in 2009 – 131 males and 280 females. While this figure marks a decrease of 32 deaths, compared with 2008 levels, and a positive decline in male fatalities, the National Asthma Council Australia is warning that there is no room for complacency. Chair of the National Asthma Council Australia, Dr Noela Whitby AM, said the 2009 toll is still a concern as every death is a tragedy. “The data highlights some ar-

eas of concern with nearly half of asthmarelated deaths occurring in the 80+ years age bracket, and the death toll is significantly higher in women aged 80+ years (141) than men (48),” she said. According to the National Asthma Council Australia the number of deaths registered each year amongst older Australians is continuing to increase probably in line with the ageing Australian population. “The rate of mortality from asthma in Australia is relatively high by international standards though we have done much in the last few decades to bring about better asthma management. This has resulted in far fewer deaths.” While Dr Whitby encourages ongoing

asthma management year round, she is concerned about the impact of winter, especially in more vulnerable populations such as older adults. “Now’s the time for extra vigilance as the colder air, flu and viruses can trigger or exacerbate asthma symptoms,” she said. “It is imperative for people of all ages to take their asthma seriously. See your doctor to review your asthma management program and ask for an updated written asthma action plan,” Dr Whitby advised. Australia has one of the highest prevalence rates of asthma in the world and while it can’t be cured, it can be controlled with asthma medication and by following an up to date written asthma action plan.

Keep your brain alive and your body fit THE Benefits of Ballroom Dancing are Amazing: Dancing Makes You Smarter! Ballroom Dancing has been shown to have numerous health benefits in various studies. According to research published by the Albert Einstein Centre in New York, those who dance three to four times a week have a 76% lower incidence of developing memory loss than those who dance once, or not at all. “Dance is not purely physical, it also requires a lot of mental effort,” said Joseph Verghese, professor of Neurology and the author of the study. This study, in which nearly 500 people took part, found that dancing, which stimulates the mind as well as the body, preserves memory and prevents the onset of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease The research also found that whilst brain stimulation through puzzles and mind

games seemed to have a positive effect, (47% reduced risk), purely physical activities, like swimming, running and cycling, did not seem to prevent the disease and Dancing frequently provided 76% reduced risk. That was the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical! Many people have gotten the message. That’s why we see increasing numbers of people of all ages having the time of their lives on dance floors all over the county. They are receiving a triple payoff: mental, physical and social interaction. Why does dancing help maintain the brain? The principle of Neuroplasticity hypothesizes that we continue to rewire synapses in the brain with continuous activity. This is literally a “use it or lose it” phenomenon. When we are dancing, we are using our cerebral cortex and hippocampus, which are

THE baking skills of many of the familiar faces were on display at the Biggest Morning Tea function held at Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. In a display of all things sweet and savoury on May 27, cakes, cupcakes and even pies and sausage rolls were sold by gold coin donation to raise valuable funds for the Cancer Council of Australia. Our girls were proud to raise more than $100 on the day and many customers left the branch full and happy. The funds raised from Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea help Cancer

Council to continue our work in cancer research, prevention, and education and support services. In 2010, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raised over $10 million! Cooroy Community Bank manager, Fiona Hutchings said she was proud of the teams’ efforts on the day. “We sure have a few good cooks amongst our girls and I think we all proud of our fundraising efforts for a very worthy cause. It’s something we’ll look forward t doing again next year,” Fiona said. If you still want to make a donation, simply log onto biggest morning tea.com.au or call 1300 65 65.

Congratulations to Denise Yabsley for winning this year’s Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy’s Biggest Morning Tea pamper pack. Tania would like to thank her helpers and the community for raising $1215.00 for the cause.

QUEENSLAND Health is urging people to get vaccinated for the ’flu season this winter. Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said the higher than usual level of influenza cases so far this year made vaccination vital for the coming months. “It’s especially important for people in groups considered most at risk, and that’s why Queensland Health provides free ’flu vaccinations for the elderly, pregnant women, indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk due to medical conditions,” Dr Young said. “Influenza is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing. “As is the case every year, this year’s annual vaccine is based on the virus strains circulating in the northern hemisphere. This

includes protection against influenza A H3N2 strain, influenza A H1N1 strain, and an influenza B strain. “This reliable and safe vaccine is available to prevent people getting influenza.” Dr Young said there had been a large increase in ’flu cases this year. “There have already been 1598 notifications of influenza in Queensland so far this year, compared with 279 over the same period in 2010,” she said. “This is a trend we are seeing throughout the nation, with northern Australia in particular reporting higher-than-expected numbers of cases. “We usually see an increasing trend in Queensland notifications from around the end of May. “That’s why it’s important for all people at higher risk of severe influenza to get vaccinated, and Queensland Health provide free vaccinations for this group.”

This includes pregnant women, people aged 65 years and older, indigenous people aged 15 years and older. Those who are medically at risk - such as those with heart, respiratory or nervous system diseases, chronic illnesses or impaired immunity, and children aged six months to ten years who are on long-term aspirin therapy – are also eligible for free vaccination. Dr Young said anyone wishing to reduce their risk of becoming unwell with influenza should be vaccinated. “Annual vaccination against influenza reduces the chances of catching the ’flu and the severity of the ’flu if you do catch it,” she said. Anyone over the age of six months old, who is not severely allergic to vaccine ingredients, can be vaccinated. Vaccination is available from GPs’ surgeries, Aboriginal medical services and other immunisation providers.

Winter - the time for weight loss WE don’t normally think of Winter as a time to lose weight. Normally we do the opposite, eating all those hearty comfort foods that invariable pack on the kilos. But this time of year is actually a perfect time to start a weight loss program. When overweight, people often experience heat intolerance so starting a weight loss program in the cooler weather is greatly beneficial as you don’t have the heat to contend with. Make a Difference Health & Fitness have developed a Winter Weight Loss Program that will get you well on your way to looking fantastic when Summer rolls around and it is time to get into those fat revealing shorts and swimsuits again! The first step of the program is pretty easy – it involves a Bio Age test like you see on television shows such as The Biggest Loser and Oprah. A Bio Age test is painless and measures your biological age as opposed to your chronological age which is how long you’ve been alive. “Our biological age is an indicator of how

well we are aging and our life expectancy. Many people get a bit of a shock when they have a Bio Age test but it is possible to change your biological age. One of our clients was in her thirties and had a biological age of 50. She has now turned that around and has a biological age younger than her actual age,” explained Maria Sturre, Make a Difference Health & Fitness’ naturopath. The remainder of the Make a Difference Health & Fitness Winter Weight Loss Program involves a fitness assessment, goal setting and a total of 14 sessions with either naturopath, Marie Sturre or Personal Trainer, Lee Smith. The combination of these sessions is determined based on your individual needs and all sessions are one-on-one so you get personal attention tailored to match your requirements. Another client of Make A Difference Health & Fitness, Bethwyn Hancock swears by the results. “My life has absolutely changed since I’ve been going I’ve got more energy, lost about 20 kgs,

and my muscle tone has improved. Lee’s approach as a trainer is really supportive and encouraging but he makes sure you work to your potential. I started in Summer and in hindsight it would have been so much smarter to start in the cooler months. I’d say if you are thinking about losing weight – do it now!” Often the first step in a weight loss program is the hardest, so why not make that first step a little easier by giving Make a Difference Health & Fitness a try on 5442 6179 or visit www.madhf.com.au.

Vision in Australia “OPTOMETRISTS examine approximately 20% of the Australian population every year” says local optometrist Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy, “As a profession, optometrists provide 75% of the primary eye care in this country.” Here are some interesting facts about vision care in Australia. • There are over 3,800 optometrists in Australia. • Over 500,000 Australians are visually impaired in both eyes. • Over half of visual impairment in Australia is due to refractive error which is easily corrected. • Over 50% of Australians are short or long sighted. • Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and severe vision impairment in Australia. • People with diabetes are 25 times more likely to lose vision or go blind that those without diabetes.

• 150,000 Australians who have glaucoma have not been diagnosed. • Aboriginal Australians have rates of preventable blindness 10 times greater than non-Aboriginal Australians. • Undetected vision problems can severely impact on a child’s learning if left untreated. • Eye injuries cost Australia over $180 million a year. Over 90% of eye injuries could be prevented if correct eye protection is worn. • The total cost of vision disorders in Australia was estimated to be $4.8 billion in 2006. • Optometrists Association Australia recommends that everyone should have their eyes tested regularly as advised by their optometrist. Cooran State School Annual Athletics Carnival 2011 PERFECT weather heraleded the arrivial of the Cooran State School Annual Athletic Carnival. The feeling of camaraderie as everyone pitched in to set up was just the start of what was to be a great day! The sprints in the morning followed by the field events through the afternoon went smoothly with all children showing the great spirit of the ‘Cooran kid’. Most impressive was the supportive behaviours throughout the day where one child went out of their way to support another that may have been having problems with a particular event, running along beside a runner who was lagging behind or giving up their place in a ball games team so another could “have a go”. In the end there could only be one winning house and that was the Kangaroos. Congratulations to the winning team and to all the children who participated. Age Champions: 1st girls 9 yr, Daisy Mannetje; 1st Boys 9 yr, Joshua Wessling; 1st Girls 10 yr, Aamber Clements; 1st boys 10 yr, Patrick Broman; 1st girls 11 yr, Boadicea Mountford; 1st boys 11 yr, Mocanachy Smith; 1st Girls 12 yr, Abbey O’Hanlon; 1st boys 12 yr, Taon Mulcahy; 1st boys 13 yrs, Jordon Todd.

THE Cooroy Probus Club had another fun filled outing, this time to the Pomona Bowls Club for a basic bowls lesson, time to practise our new found skills and a traditional BBQ lunch. Experienced bowlers and first timers shared the greens, scoring was forgotten and bodies bent beyond the norm, all to the amusement of those watching. Thanks are extended to the local bowlers for their hospitality and for sharing their bowling secrets. I’m sure the Pomona Bowls Club will gain themselves a few new members. Those who attended all voted to make this an annual event.

The Squat King crowned

IT’S official the King of the Squat in Cooroy is 14 year AFL football Player Jay Clark. And he beat some pretty fit people to do it! Rising to the challenge Jay did an awesome 115 full medicine balls squats in 2 minutes at the challenge held by The Workout Shed at the Cooroy Fusion event in May. Proud to present Jay a prize for his efforts is Russ Price Trainer at The Workout Shed. Jay wins a 10 session training card valued at $120, which he is putting towards developing his core strength. Russ says, “It was fantastic to see so many families having a go, just for

the fun of being active and having a laugh. “Jay did a brilliant job, especially considering he hadn’t done specific training for this challenge. I personally cant wait to see how many he can pump out after a month’s core training sessions at The Shed. We are proud to support our young people develop the foundation strength needed to stand them in good stead for their sporting futures without developing stress injuries. The Workout Shed is open Monday to Saturday. Core strength classes are held for all ages and abilities daily phone 5442 6338.

sport Free kick seals it for Cooroora A SECOND half free kick from 22 meters to 1st Division Captain/Coach Scott Rocker helped Cooroora United to all 3 points in their latest home game against Coolum. Not many chances to either team as tactics and skill played out the first half. After surviving 3 corners during the first half Cooroora hit the lead for the first time in the match soon after the half time break. Rocker gave Cooroora the lead when he hit a rocket around a defensive wall and into the bottom corner of the goal. That was enough to put the red and blue boys back into the game. Coolum then missed a golden opportunity to tie the game up when they broke through the middle but an offside decision proved costly for them. The resilient Cooroora responded with a courageous defensive effort for the remaining 20 minutes and grabbed the 3 points on offer. Cooroora are now within striking distance of the all important top 4 sitting 2 points outside and 5 home games coming in succession. Check out all game times for this weekend’s home games on www.sunshinecoastfootball.com.au and come on down to lend your support. Secure your seat close to the heater and watch the best in Cooroora play the World game live in our own backyard. Reserve grade men play at 4pm with the Men’s Premier team kicking off at 6pm. The canteen is open with volunteer helpers Robyn, Julie, Tina and Melissa serving up gourmet pies, steak burgers, sausage rolls, chips, wedges and much more. So grab yourself a feed, a coffee or a cold drink and settle yourself in at the Burrow to enjoy a great game of football.

POMONA Demons AFC has a long history of producing quality players at all levels. Past players include, Rhys Magin (formerly Essendon), Alik Magin and Jake Crawford (GC Suns). Fourteen year old Billy Mahony is no exception. After a successful carnival with his Regional Team in Townsville, he was selected in the Queensland U15 team to compete at the AFL National Schoolboys Championships in Canberra in July, and awarded B&F player for the Sunshine Coast. Billy was one of four players named in the team from the Sunshine Coast Region and the only player from the Noosa District to gain selection. This is Billy’s tenth year with the Demons after joining the club as a five year old. He currently plays in the U16

Division 1 competition and is coached by local legend Bill Magin. Other Pomona players who have made representative teams this year include – Brad Forbes (currently being considered for the U16 State team), Jesse Lawrence and Alex and Billy Mahony who made the U16 Suncoast Power team which competed at the State Championships at Zillmere in May. Michael Daddow was also named in the Sunshine Coast U15 Schoolboys Team along with Billy. Not bad for a club with around 70 junior members! Congratulations Billy, we wish you the best of luck. Anyone from the local community who wants to assist Billy or the club, whether as a sponsor or a supporter, please email: pomonademons@hotmail.com

COOROY horse rider Crystal Mort has won the Australian Title at the Grand Nationals Horse Championship in Sydney. The Grand Nationals consist of the top horses in Australia, so to take out a this title is something quite special. To qualify for the Grand Nationals you need to win a Royal Show or Horse of the Year. Crystal won at the Ekka last year, giving her the qualification to the Grand Nationals, Competitors come from all over Australia to compete and is held at the Equestrian Centre in Sydney which was built for the Olympics. Crystal qualified last year but missed out on any placings. This was only her second time at the event and she won ‘Elite Equine 2011 Grand National Large Show Hunter Galloway’ and overall was awarded ‘Champion Hunter Galloway’. Crystal’s horse, DPXTC (Gus), is an ex race horse that she has educated and trained for the last two years. Crystal started riding at the age of 16, doing all the local shows over the years giving her great experience.
