Community chips in for needy couple

Kathy and Bill’s old impractical bathroom will soon be revamped thanks to the community’s generosity COOROY residents, Kathy & Bill are both in their mid-sixties and have worked hard all their lives; Bill with the Defence force and Kathy with employment services. Both planned for a different retirement than what they now have to endure. They have suffered more adversity in the last couple of years than most people suffer in a life time. A couple of years ago, Bill suffered a stroke, leaving Kathy to make mortgage repayments on one wage, which was not enough. They withdrew their superannuation early, under financial hardship, but in the end, had to sell their home. They bought the only place they could afford: a high set house in

Cooroy, with rotting bathroom facilities, poor kitchen lacking cupboard and bench space with broken oven and stove top, plus numerous repair jobs, which include the need for paint (interior & exterior) and timber & insulation to repair the back-deck-roof which leaks in the rain and is too hot when it’s sunny. The back deck is the place where Bill likes to sit most. Not long after Kathy and Bill moved in, their 41 year old daughter died suddenly and unexpectedly (29 May 2014). Barely had they buried her, Bill had a fall and hit his head so hard he acquired a brain injury. Kathy had to reduce her hours at work, to part-time, to care for Bill. Their savings have been eaten away

by moving costs, medical bills and other unexpected costs. Recently, their fridge/freezer broke down. On 29th May 2015, the first anniversary of their daughter’s death, Bill had epileptic seizures and had to go to hospital. Whilst there, he fell and broke his ribs which punctured and collapsed a lung. In June this year, Kathy will be made redundant, or have to find another job not easy when she’s 66 years old and having to care for her disabled husband, find time and funds to repair her home and make it a safe place for her husband, deal with the on-going possible malpractice hearing surrounding her daughter’s death and find time to grieve her loss. Enter Keeley Toirkens. Keeley was hired by the couple’s son to clean their house and after finding out their story and seeing how certain aspects of their home were making life even more difficult for them, she decided to try and do something about it. “Originally, I had the idea of fundraising to try and improve their kitchen, said Keeley, but after spontaneously approaching Peter Bowden from North Coast Plumbing & Bathroom Centres in Noosaville to also get a quote on bath-

room renovations (with the hope of getting a good discount to make fundraising easier) Peter told me what and who I would need to facilitate a new bathroom. Then he spoke to his suppliers, Decina, Timberline, Streamline and Emroware, who all jumped at the opportunity to give to somebody who could not help themselves. “They donated a brand new bathroom, valued at over $4400. Local, John Martin, from Amrock Homes, whose business gives back by setting aside funds for community needs, was willing to coordinate the installation of the bathroom. He organized Chris Symes Tiling, Darrell Lord Waterproofing, Hire-aLoo and Whale Bins, all of the Sunshine Coast, who also are donating their time and skills to the project. “I did not expect such generosity,” said Keeley. “And neither did Bill and Kathy, which makes it all the more rewarding,” she added. “Hinterland Plumbing Group local founder and owner, David Campbell, did not hesitate to offer to do all the plumbing involved in this bathroom installation. Members of the Cooroy Seventh-day Adventist Church donated a fridge and cooker to Kathy and Bill. John Gunn, from

Top Notch Electrics, not only installed the cooker but also put in extra power points and is coming back to make sure the new bathroom has power points and exhaust fan too. Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club have volunteered their own time and labour to help with some of the practical aspects of getting Kathy and Bill back on their feet, trying to make it easier for them to function properly in their own home. Kathy will not have a bathroom for a few days, so Brent & Caz Threadgold, owners of Cooroy Luxury Motel Apartments, have offered her a motel room until the work is completed. Kathy says she feels overwhelmed by the generosity. “It’s like a dream! This doesn’t happen to people like us.” She would like to thank St Vincents Care and Dr Desh from Maple Street Surgery who have been so supportive in their hour of need. Ultimately, Kathy and Bill still need a suitable kitchen, repairs to the back deck roof and some help with painting the house, but the support of all these kind people - people she does not know - has been overwhelming.

Photographic exhibition honours characters of the Original Eumundi Markets THEY are the artists and designers who put the Eumundi Markets on the map as Australia’s premier artisan market, and it’s now their turn be celebrated – thanks to a photographic portrait exhibition running until July 25 at the newly opened art space at Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre. Titled ‘Market Characters – We Make it, Bake it, Sew it, Grow it’, the

exhibition of work by photographer Alain Bouvier was made possible with assistance through the Regional Arts Development Fund. Market Manager Daniel West says The Original Eumundi Markets embarked on the project with Eumundi-based photographer Alain Bouvier to develop a collection of portraits of artists and designers from within the market

community. “We wanted to really acknowledge the makers and creators – the talented people who make the products that put Eumundi on the map as the best market in Australia, and one of the best in the world,” Daniel says. “These are the chefs, growers, sewers, potters, metalworkers, wellness practitioners, masseuses, fashionistas, woodworkers,

painters, jewellers, entertainers and musicians that make Eumundi so very special – the people that bring so much colour and so many tourists to our village every week”. Photographer Alain Bouvier captured all images on site at the markets over many months, and it says was a privilege to get to know the faces and personalities behind the worldclass products offered for

sale each week in Eumundi. The importance of the exhibition from a cultural heritage perspective is something seen as crucial to Manager of Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre, Wendy Birrell. “It is very important to continually capture the history of such a large and significant Sunshine Coast event as the Eumundi Markets for the future,” says Wendy.

Housing Supply Critical in entry level markets Hinternoosa principal Murray Brown, commented that the supply of housing in the $400k - $550k price sector is the lowest he has experienced in his 25 years in the Hinterland Market. It would seem that the lack of new building commencements experienced over the last 9 years, and the increase in the volume of sale in the last 18 months have resulted in an acute shortage of listings in the entry level market. There has been a substantial increase in demand over the last 3 months, and well-priced & presented offerings in the early $400k price sector were being sold in less than a week, often resulting in multi offer negotiations. Murray said that whilst the market was still in a recovery phase post GFC, and buyers were still seeking value for money, demand in the entry market was more than robust, and we are desperately seeking listings to meet this demand.

THERE’S something great about seeing your own photograph hanging on the wall of an exhibition. Past entrants of the Christmas in Cooroy photographic competition know this feeling well after seeing their photographs on display at the Cooroy Butter Factory every year. The competition and exhibition have become one of the stand out events during the Christmas in Cooroy festival. However, Malcolm from Cooroy Guardian Photo Finishing, the sponsor of the competition, says that the competition in its current format has had its day. “That doesn’t mean we’re ending it here though.” he said. “We’re hoping to bring new life into the competition by bringing on board another sponsor.” They, along with Cooroy Chamber of Commerce

have teamed up with the Cooroy Rag to reinvent the popular competition which will see each edition of the Rag feature one winner and two runner up photographs. The winner will receive a printing voucher for Cooroy Guardian Photo Finishing to the value of $50. They will also go into the running for photograph of the year which will be announced at the exhibition during Christmas in Cooroy. “The most exciting part is that we aim to have every photograph that is entered over the coming months printed free of charge and displayed in the exhibition at the end of the year” Malcolm said. The new style of competition hopes to better showcase the talents of local photographers via the Cooroy Rag and at the exhibition. The

New chapter for Cooroy Library café COUNCIL has appointed United Synergies to run the Cooroy Library café service from July in an arrangement set to deliver workplace training opportunities for local young people. United Synergies will recruit young people facing barriers to employment and equip them with hospitality skills through on-the-job training. Council called for tenders in April with the aim of sourcing an operator to deliver not only a coffee and café service but additional social benefits. “United Synergies has a solid track record of providing high-value services for young people facing disadvantage,” Cr Tony Wellington said. “This arrangement will allow some of our younger citizens to receive valuable workplace experience and training. United Synergies performs fantastic work helping people in need. There can be no doubt that United Synergies has a positive impact on the overall wellbeing of our community.” The library has been running the café in-house since the former operator finished in 2013. Council awarded the contract to United Synergies at their Ordinary Meeting.

Update from Cooroy Residents Assn

Super cool supermarket I note with interest that our Supermarket, which is super duper, is modernising with some self checkouts, which are in turn quite super. But I like the checkout chicks, always happy, helpful, and bright, They make shopping easier, with everything packed just right, A friendly remark about your health, helps to make your day, And a pleasant smile and thank you, sends you on your way. The world is very digital now, things are moving slicker, To keep abreast of things, we have to function quicker. The checkout girls, the shelf stackers, the ladder climber, the kneeling, By the time my shopping’s finished, my blood pressure’s through the ceiling. They should have a special checkout lounge, for older blokes like me, With comfy chairs, and check out chicks, perhaps a cup of tea, While busier folk could scan their shopping, and quickly be on their way We older ones could take our time, and enjoy a very nice day. The Supermarket is such a friendly store, this would look after the older shopper, I’ll put the idea to Peter, I’m sure it’s a real show stopper! I hope that he will be interested, and very enthusiastic, I’m sure the over nineties will be grateful and ecstatic.

HIGHWAY Service Centre: At its Ordinary meeting 7 May, Noosa councillors voted to defer a decision on the application for 60 days (to 11 July) to allow for further discussion between the applicant and council about the application. It is understood that Noosa Council has met with the developer and that the proposal will be submitted without further changes. Likely it will get voted on at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council. Grey Nomads Now Welcome in Cooroy: At the same time that Noosa Council is discouraging backpackers in campervans from overnight stops in Noosa National Park and other parking lots and riverside locations, they have fortunately hung out the welcome sign to older budget travellers by approving an RV parking area adjacent to the Coastal Car Club’s premises, off Mary River Road, Cooroy.

news Ticking all the boxes on your end of financial year checklist Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WELL, June 30 and the end of financial year is fast approaching. In some industries (not all) that date can be more important than others. What’s particularly relevant to many people in relation to the end of the financial year is that is presents an opportunity to lodge a new tax return. It can be the opportunity to receive back from the government some of our ‘hard earned dollars’ paid in tax. Many people choose to see an accountant. This is great, because they are generally qualified and have the necessary knowledge to assist you. There are some things you can do to prepare for your accountant. Alternatively if you choose not to see an accountant there are several things you should consider when preparing to lodge your tax return. Some of these include: 1. Obtain your Group Certificate for the past financial year. Remember that if you have more than one employer you will need one for each of them. 2. Visit your bank or collate your bank statements to determine interest you may have earned over the financial year. 3. If you have an investment loan for perhaps a property or shares you will need to have a statement to show how much interest you paid for the year. Your bank can help with this one also. 4. If you received income from that property or share portfolio you will need details of what was earned during the year. 5. Additionally in relation to an investment property, have you incurred any expenses throughout the year such as repairs on that property? Be mindful that the Tax Office can be very strict regarding these types of expenses. You will need receipts.

6. You may have incurred expenses over the year that is specifically related to your job. This could be a compulsory uniform, or tools required to complete your work. Dig out your receipts for those because you may be able to claim them when completing your tax return. Note however that different jobs fall into different categories and this can mean that some expenses are claimable in one industry but not in another. The Australian Tax Office has a great website that lists the different work related expenses. 7. Have you made any charitable donations over the last year? If so, find the receipt because you may be able to claim it. These ideas are just a few to consider. There are likely to be more and your accountant can provide you with a more extensive list. The important thing to remember is that generally you will need receipts or statements of items applicable to your tax return. Some of these can be obtained from your local bank, others you will need to seek elsewhere. So, Happy New Financial Year everyone! If you would like to know more about any of our services at the Cooroy Community Bank branch, please feel free to contact me or any of the team on 5447 7131. Green light for Cooroy RV stop NOOSA Council will trial an RV stop near the heart of Cooroy in a decision it hopes will encourage the growing RV market to stop in and explore Noosa’s country charms. Cr Sandy Bolton says the Mary River Road facility will accommodate up to 40 Recreational Vehicles (RVs) and provide the opportunity to grow the local economy. “This stop will enable Cooroy to achieve ‘RV

Friendly Town’ status, and put not just Cooroy, but the whole of country Noosa, with its unique rural villages and attractions, on the RV travellers’ map,” Cr Bolton said. “With easy access from the Bruce Highway, Cooroy is well positioned as a getaway gateway to a range of accommodation options including RV and camping sites at locations on the ‘country run’ including Pomona, Cooran,

Kin Kin, Boreen Point and Lake Macdonald. “These provide perfect bases from which to explore many attractions including the Majestic Theatre and Botanic Gardens, to walk the Noosa Trail Network or sail on the lakes, and attend one of the Shire’s many events. “There is a real enthusiasm for this facility in Cooroy, with strong support from the local chamber of commerce, commu-

Full-throttle finish for Council’s capital works program NOOSA Council will end the financial year with more than 82% of budgeted capital works projects either underway or completed. Cr Frank Pardon said efforts to fasttrack construction work in recent months had paid off and Council hoped to be tracking as high as 90% by June 30. “We’ve ramped up the pace and as a result we’ve made up for much of the time lost to catch-up work and detailed design work in the early days following de-amalgamation,” he said. Gibson Road safety improvements and the Noosa Botanic Gardens pathway upgrade are among projects recently completed, with the Noosaville Pirate Playground renewal nearing completion. Council has now begun a Gympie Terrace pipe rehabilitation project, a pathway and lighting upgrade at Tewantin and the Cooroy-Noosa Road rehabilitation stage 1 works. Cr Pardon said the bulk of Council’s 2014/2015 capital works projects will be either completed or well underway by June 30.

“The Munna Point bridge tender closes on the 10th of June. All going well there is chance we will have a contractor signed up very close to the end of the financial year which will commit the costs. “This would leave only the Rifle Street flood mitigation works at Pomona as the only major project carried over to next year’s program,” Cr Pardon said. Asset Planning Coordinator Bryan O’Connor said Council would continue to fast-track work ahead of June 30. “For the remainder of the year we anticipate the same increase and trend and hope to achieve 80-90% of our actuals and commitments for the capital program,” he said. “This is a huge improvement from where we sat in early December at just 12-15%. Cr Pardon said: “The speed at which we have caught up reflects the hard work of all of the staff involved. They’ve done a fantastic job getting us to where we are now.”

nity groups and residents. It stands to open up new tourism and business opportunities as well for the agriculture, culinary and environmental sectors in our rural areas, which can further strengthen the local economy.” Council approved a change of use application for the site, which will also offer a waste dump point for RVs, not available elsewhere in Cooroy. “Industry groups have

advised that there is a real need for this sort of RV stop close to town, and we’ll be monitoring to see whether this trial site addresses that need,” Cr Bolton said. Council last year resolved to amend the town plan to better cater for ‘grey nomad’ tourists. The trial RV stop will provide for ‘leave no trace’ travellers to enjoy short-term stays, capped at four consecutive nights.

Letter to the editor I READ the brickbats in the recent edition of the Cooroy Rag and noted a comment regarding the state of Happy Jack Ck Rd at Carters Ridge. Unfortunately, there was no name attached to the comment so I had no way of addressing the issue with the writer of the comment. As a result, I asked Council staff to check the condition of the road and advise the current grading routine. I am advised that the road was last graded on February 16th and is due again in August. Staff inspected the road again this week to follow up on the enquiry and report the Noosa Shire section of the road has no potholes and is in a reasonable condition. The road does traverse Council boundaries, and it may be that there is some grading required in the Gympie section. I will pass a request onto the Gympie Shire to look at their section on behalf of residents. A check on whether any call had been received with regards to the road’s condition advised that no request had been received by Noosa Council. I can only assume that the person registering their brickbat lives in Gympie Shire and may have lodged a request with them. I do ask that if there are issues with roads or any Noosa Council asset that residents advise Council asap on 5329 6500 or Email mail@noosa.qld.gov.au. Council welcomes your input so that issues can be addressed as soon as posiible. Whilst staff undertake routine inspections of all Council assets, don’t assume that every issue is known as soon as it occurs. If we don’t know a problem exists, it makes it a difficult problem to fix. Joe Jurisevic, Noosa Shire Councillor

Cooroy Lower Mill Board holds AGM COOROY Lower Mill Board Inc (CLMB) held its Annual General Meeting last night at the Cooroy Library community meeting room. This year two directors, (John Gygar and Tex Pipke) terms expired and we are pleased to say they both re-nominated and were again reelected for a new 3 year term. Two new members nominated for vacancies on the board and were also elected. Irene Aves brings a vast experience in financial management as well as a keen understanding of local government to the board. Charmaine Tunn, a recent “local” with extensive legal experience was also elected and will assume the role of

secretary to the Board in addition to providing sage advice. These two new additions reinforce the Board’s combined experience and are especially appreciated as the Board prepares to assume the management of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. BFAC will be a significant project for the Board and the availability of varied and in depth experience of the’ members goes a long way to ensuring the development and implementation of good planning for this iconic facility. Deliberate planning has given CLMB the hugely successful Fusion Festival under the guidance

of Chris Bell. Now we move to the next challenge. The Board with the support of Noosa Council is committed to fulfilling many of the needs of the arts community as well as putting the BFAC on a sound financial footing. “To accomplish this we will need a large pool of volunteers to make the facility run for the benefit of users and visitors. CLMB president, Tex Pipke further commented “There are bright horizons ahead but it will take hard work and lots of cooperative spirit to shape the BFAC so it reflects the values of Cooroy and hinterland people.”

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

RECENTLY I have received a number of phone calls from concerned mums and dads as well as from members of the Cooroy Community expressing concerns with the scourge of unlawful drugs and the perceived ease that drugs seem to be available to our young people. Cooroy Police are very active in detecting drug use and supply as Cooroy Officers all have our own teenage kids and the risk there is the same as with the general community. If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times that the proactive nature of the Cooroy community never ceases to amaze me. Some communities will just sit back and whinge about a problem and blame everyone else for whatever the issue is and do nothing to help solve the problem themselves. Cooroy is very different in this regard as we continually receive information here at the police station that assists us to apprehend drug suppliers and traffickers and also to target thieves and criminals. Recent high profile arrests and clear ups include a 52 year old male and a 17 year old female arrested for drug trafficking and supply within the Cooroy area. These arrests come in addition to the results reported in my last Rag Police report where I mentioned that we had dealt with 14 offenders on a total of 29 drug related charges. The charges of drug supply and trafficking are extremely serious charges which can led to jail time so the consequences are extremely serious for those parasites of the community seeking to make an easy buck at the expense of others. Many of the above arrests were brought about by proactive members of the community taking the time to call the Cooroy Station (54425030) or Crimestoppers (1800333000) with information rather than sitting back complaining about it. I’m also able to report another pleasing result with a further two offenders arrested and held in custody for numerous break and enter

offences around the Noosa Hinterland areas including Cooroy, Eumundi, Pomona and Kenilworth. These two offenders were targeting School Machinery sheds as well as Council and private premises stealing mowers, brush cutters and similar equipment. After some excellent work by the Noosa and Gympie CIB sections a search of premises in Carters Ridge revealed literally a truck load of stolen equipment with the majority of equipment traced back to the lawful owners and returned. Some equipment located was traced back to the Cooroy State School, the Cooroy Sports Ground sheds and the Lake Macdonald Botanical Gardens so these very worthy community groups were able to recover equipment which was sorely missed. The return of these items was made easier by some owners taking the time to accurately record model and serial numbers and some even went to the trouble of inscribing their equipment. If you are reading this please take the time to inscribe your valuables especially items that are more easily stolen or at the very least accurately record all serial and model numbers as police are able to trace serial numbers through our extensive data bases. Also, can I remind people of the launching of our new initiative called “turning the screws on Crime” which will be coordinated by our “Volunteer in Policing” member, Anne Winning. This initiative will be conducted on Saturday the 18th July, 2015 from 9am to 11am in the car parking area in Elm st, Cooroy outside the Cooroy State School. Members of the Cooroy Police, Rotary and the Local SES will be on scene fitting cars with tamper proof one way screws which make the theft of registration plates extremely difficult. This service will be done free of charge and will make it more difficult for thieves to steal number plates and use them to commit other crimes around the area.

Help “Turn the Screws on Crime” COOROY police can theft-proof your car’s number plates free of charge on Saturday July 18, when the Cooroy Police join forces with the Cooroy SES and Cooroy Rotary Club to help prevent theft and other crimes. “Number plate theft is often the first action thieves take to cover their tracks when committing other crimes,” said Sergeant Mal Scott. Unfortunately, number plate theft is on the rise on the Sunshine Coast. “However, the one-way screws that we will be providing and fitted free of charge can’t be removed with conventional tools, so the more people who take this opportunity, the more difficult it is for thieves. “We are very grateful for the support of the Cooroy SES and the Cooroy Rotary Club who are assisting us in providing this free service by being on hand to remove your plates and re-secure them with the irremovable screws,” said Sergeant Scott. So come and take advantage of this free program – it only takes a few minutes per car. Details below. Turn the Screws on Crime When: Saturday 18 July Time: 9-11 am Where: Cooroy State School parking area, Elm St, Cooroy

ABW to set young lives on new paths NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) is gearing up to host Australian Business Week for the twelfth straight year, and life is about to get very interesting for many Year 11 students. Australian Business Week (ABW) offers students the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to run a company. In an exciting one-week intensive program, students experience what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. ABW co-ordinator, Alison Rexa says each team has to manage their own multi-million dollar business. “This year students will be running a Consumer Electronics Retail store and with the help of a business and teacher mentor will discover the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century,” she said. “Through the week, students in teams of 14-15 students will perform tasks having formed and named a company, with each student has an assigned role. They will then review an ABW manual covering the key business areas, make

decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This years’ 15 teams must also develop a marketing strategy and host a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. “Finally, each team will prepare a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and finally, deliver an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It makes for a full week, but will leave each participant with some valuable skills and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field,” she added. Without the support of parents, students and teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it has become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop in recent years. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Having committed to sponsoring ABW for another year, branch manager Geoff Edwards said the Community Bank is look-

ing forward to providing mentoring support to go along with its financial assistance. “Assisting in the mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their endless energies and talents. One of our Community Bank board directors, Fred Broomhall will also be on hand to assist during the week of mentoring,” Geoff said. “I encourage any business owner who hasn’t been to ABW to come along as some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Geoff added. The ABW program will conclude with an Awards Ceremony at NDSHS to be held on Thursday, 25 June from 7.00 pm. Trade Displays will be open in the main hall from 6.30 pm for families to view the efforts of our students. If you would like to know more about ABW or how you can support the future of the program, contact the ABW program co-ordinator Alison Rexa at NDSHS on 5472 2234.

JUST because you are a contractor, doesn’t mean you should forget about building your retirement nest egg. There’s a lot of upside to being a contractor, but it’s important to keep in mind the benefits you may not be getting to make sure you’re not short changed in retirement. If you’re a contractor, or know someone who is, here’s some food for thought to help spring clean your finances! Q: Are you a contractor or an employee? You’re contracted for a set task or project. You submit invoices for the hours you work. If this sounds like you, you may be one of Australia’s 980,000 independent contractors.[1] About 8.5 per cent of Australian workers are employed on this basis.[2] Not all contractors are the same and everyone’s situation is different. If you’re not sure about your exact employment status, you can use the Australian Taxation Office’s Employee/contractor decision tool. Then you can use the Superannuation guarantee eligibility decision tool to work out if you’re entitled to super. Both tools can be accessed at ato.gov.au. Your classification has important implications for your tax and superannuation. Determining whether an individual contractor is an employee for Superannuation Guarantee purposes is a tax issue for the individual or the entity contracting the individual. It’s a complex area and it’s a good idea to consult a tax adviser. 980,000 – number of independent contractors in Australia8.5% – percentage of Australians employed as contractors Q: What’s the upside to contracting? Contracting can be a great experience, par-

ticularly if you’re after more control over how much you work, or what you’re working on. By forgoing some of the benefits of permanent employees, you can also earn more money. Similarly, if you’re coming back from a career break or joining the workforce for the first time, securing a contract role can often be easier, and sometimes lead to permanent employment. Q: That’s great. But what’s the downside? If you’re sick, you will not get paid sick leave. And when it comes to super you may not have any super contributions made for you. Employees have superannuation contributions paid into a nominated superannuation fund by their employer. But as an independent contractor you might be on your own. You’re responsible for funding your own super, just as you’re responsible for paying your own tax. Q: So, why does super matter so much? When you’re starting to make your way in the workforce, the lack of super may not seem like a big deal. After all, retirement is a fair way off. And you’ve got more money in your back pocket for Friday night. And when you’re younger, it’s easy to think of super as ‘lost money’. You can’t access it now, so it’s out of sight and out of mind. But as you establish yourself in the workforce and build up a bigger retirement nest egg, your perception of super is likely to change. If you’re contracting later in your career— for example, after returning from parental leave— or know someone who’s winding back their hours leading up to retirement,

The Probus Club of Cooroy THE members of the Probus club of Cooroy continue to enjoy interesting outings organised by the Social committee which so far this year have been exceptionally varied. We are a friendly group of men and women who enjoy listening to invited speakers at our monthly meetings which are held in the Anglican Church Hall on the first Monday of each month at 10.00am. After the short general meeting there is morning tea followed by a guest speaker. The club’s activities are varied with group bookings to live theatre events, a monthly dinner group and coffee morning and a main monthly social activity, so there’s plenty of time to simply enjoy the company of like-minded, fun loving people. New members are always welcome to come along and join us at a meeting or at one of our social activities. You can call 54555526 for the date and time of a social activity, or just turn up to our monthly meeting. The next meeting is on Monday July 6th at the Anglican Church Hall at 10am.

like one of your parents, you’ll know all about the importance of super. Super can be the difference between achieving the lifestyle you want in retirement and needing to rely on the aged pension. Spend too many years as a contractor and you could be playing catch-up if you don’t start making regular super contributions. Q: How can you build up your super? You need to think about the best long-term strategies to build your retirement nest egg. • Make regular contributions from your pretax income into your super. • Take account of government incentives, like co-contributions and spouse contributions. • Review your investment mix of growth and defensive assets to make sure it reflects your life stage and risk tolerance. Now is the time to spring into life, take control of your retirement savings, and really own your tomorrow. For more information, call us today on 5447 7740. [1] Australia Bureau of Statistics. Author and editor to hold weekend workshop SO many people want to write. So many give up too soon. Rose Allan, author, editor and teacher is well aware of what sabotages the new writer. Her acclaimed Writing from the Heart workshop is designed to overcome fears, to demystify the writing process, and show how writing can be immensely rewarding and fun. In an atmosphere that celebrates individuality, you will learn how to tap into the creative visionary brain and write from a deep centre, drawing on your own experiences and passions. Then Rose will show you how to use the clever analytical brain to pull your writing together, to clarify

and make it a joy to read. Rose is the author of Spirit of Noosa and Out of this Whirlwind, award winning short fiction and poetry, a professional editor and long-term teacher of writing. This is the workshop that set Annah Faulkner on the path to writing her multiple award-winning novel – The Beloved. ‘Rose is a brilliant teacher,’ says Annah. The Writing from the Heart workshop will be held at Cooroy Library, 4-5 July. Numbers are strictly limited for quality teaching and Rose urges writers to phone her on 5446 3648 for more details and to talk about their writing.

Windows 10 to be released in July FOR those of you with Windows 7 or 8.1, you may have noticed in the last few days a little white window popping up in the bottom right corner of your screen mentioning the upgrade to Windows 10. Well the wait is over and on the 29th of July, Windows 10 will be released. The biggest surprise is that if you currently have Windows 7 or 8.1, Microsoft is giving you a free upgrade to 10. There are a few catches here though. First of all the free upgrade offer is only available until this time next year. What this means is that if you do not upgrade by next year you will have to purchase Windows 10 in order to upgrade. The advantage is that if you don’t feel like upgrading straight away, you can leave it until a little while down the track. Secondly the download for Windows 10 is 3GB, which for most home users isn’t much but if you are using a pre-paid mobile device for internet (eg. The Telstra 4G stick/box) then it might be more data then you pay for and you may find you can’t do it all in one hit. Users who currently have Windows 8.1 will find that Windows 10 is a big up-

grade. With the return of the start menu it makes things a lot easier to navigate. Although it is still a little bit different from good old Windows XP, if Windows 8 was a shock to the system Windows 10 will not disappoint. If you are currently using Windows 7 the advantages of the upgrade aren’t as big but you will still want to do it as the upgrade brings you to the latest version of Internet Explore along with many security upgrades. All in all it’s nice to see Microsoft admit their mistake (sort of) with Windows 8 and give everyone a freebie to say sorry. If you have any further questions about Windows 10 or would like to play with it on our demo computer then feel free to visit us at Cooroy Computers and we can show you what all the fuss is about. We are also offering, for anyone on a mobile broadband connection or who doesn’t feel confident performing the upgrade, to go through the Windows 10 upgrade on your PC for only $20. This gives you peace of mind that it is done correctly and saves you valuable data on your internet connection.

Exhibition of glass and geometrical artworks LASTING Impressions Gallery, Kenilworth proudly presents a joint exhibition by Sydney-based glass artist Robert Wynne and Flaxton Artist Miles Allen on display until 21st June. Internationally recognised glass artist Robert Wynne presents some of his exceptional works. Prominent pieces of layered and silvered glass subtly capture the light. His technique of creating textured surfaces by sandblasting intricate patterns onto his work further enhances their appeal. Robert’s work is featured in galleries around Australia and the world; in prominent public and private collections including the new Parliament House in Canberra, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and the private collections of President Bill Clinton and Sir Elton John among others. Miles Allen, who has recently been awarded first prize for mixed media work at the Immanuel College Arts Festival, will show his geometrical art composed of the colourful plywood fruit boxes which he collects from southern European fruit markets. With great care and endless creativity, Miles composes kaleidoscopic compositions that sparkle in their joy and playfulness. Making intelligent use of logos and wording on the original boxes, together with various inks and wax, he takes us onto an international tour.

NOOSA Council area is fortunate to have a large variety of Native orchids growing naturally. As an orchid lover I am always watching for these gems. Australia has 3 varieties of Cymbidiums and all 3 grow in this area. The Australian Cymbidiums are not as spectacular as the overseas ones but have a beauty of their own. They have pendulous flower spikes and the growing habit has adapted to our very changeable conditions over thousands of years. These can be seen growing high up out of the side of trees.

An orchid once abundant in this area is Dendrobium speciosum (King Orchid). This orchid is one of the best orchids in the world. There are plenty of examples growing in gardens. Because they are native to our area they can be grown without any special attention and flower every year. I try to encourage people to buy plants from the nurseries as the numbers in the wild have been heavily depleted. I live in the Mary Valley and the older residents tell of thousands of King Orchids flowering in the spring. In our area there are none left? Their habitat

has been cleared for farming and the few remaining remnants of shrub are getting smaller. The Americans adore our native orchids we take them for granted and don’t value them. One of the club members has found 5 native orchid species on her property and will give a small talk on these plants at one of the future meetings. The club conducted a very successful show in Cooroy on the Mother ’s Day weekend the display was beautiful. We hold another in September to showcase the spring flowering orchids. If you are interested in

Cymbidium-suave growing orchids you may Saturday of each month want to come along and starting at 1.00pm. Visitors’ meet like-minded people at welcome. About Lisa Lister and Bowen Therapy. Lisa came to Bowen Therapy through personal experience, after a fall from a horse and receiving unsuccessful traditional GP recommended treatments, Lisa tried Bowen and was amazed with the results after only one treatment. Bowen Therapy is a system of gentle noninvasive, soft-tissue moves based on the work of the late Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong, Victoria. These Bowen moves help to bring the body into balance, thereby promoting healing and well-being. It is so gentle that anyone, from newborns, children, highly trained athletes, pregnant women, to the aged and infirm, can safely receive a session, even if they cannot receive other types of body therapies.

COOROY RAG

YOU’RE running helter-skelter towards the summit of Mr Cooroora like the devil himself is after you. You throw yourself up almost vertical slabs of rough, grey rock, panting, gasping, sometimes scrambling on all fours, gritting your teeth through the pain. Then, no time to enjoy the splendid, far-flung view, no time

to even catch your breath, as you launch yourself back down the mountain at breakneck speed. It sounds like a lot of fun, right? If you think so, and you can guarantee you will complete the 4.2km race to the top of Mt Cooroora and back within an hour, you should step up and enter the Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge, the premier event of the King of the Mountain

Competitor Profile: Dennis Jackson

Dennis Jackson has a long history of running up whacking big mountains. But it all started with a dare. In 1980 Dennis was a small business owner, enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of beautiful Kawerau, on New Zealand’s North Island. This town is noted for having one of the warmest climates in New Zealand. It also boasts the country’s only free heated swimming pool, which is important because “warmest climate” means something different to New Zealanders than it does to the rest of us. Kawerau is also nestled near the base of majestic Mt Putauaki (Edgecumbe), scene of the Tasman Mountain Race, a gruelling foot race to the top and back of this 820m peak. So there was Dennis, living the good life and giving no thought to undertaking

extraordinary exertion. As a prominent local businessman he sponsored the Tasman Mountain Race, donated the trophy, and hosted visiting Australians who came across to compete. Then, in 1986, came the life-changing dare and Dennis has been running up mountains ever since. Soon Mt Putauaki wasn’t enough, so for some years Dennis has been travelling from New Zealand to Pomona to run up Mt Cooroora in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Asked how he trains for these daunting mountain races, Dennis is blasé. “Training is overrated” he declares. “I don’t really do any targeted training, I just like to ride my bike or run when I feel like it. As long as I get a beer at the top, I’m happy.” As a veteran of Mt Putauaki, Dennis finds the Mt Cooroora challenge a lot easier. For a start, it’s about half the height of its New Zealand counterpart, and there are no wild pigs to dodge. 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of these two difficult and dangerous mountain races becoming official Sister Races, and in celebration Dennis will be lining up in Pomona with around 20 of his compatriots. He doesn’t fancy himself as a contender to win this year, but if there’s a beer waiting for him he’ll count it as a race well run.

Something many people will also find interesting will be the demonstrations conducted by local fire fighters, who will set alight display kitchens and then show the best way to extinguish different types of fires. The fire fighters will also be showing off their brand new fire truck, with visitors invited to inspect it and lucky ones might be allowed to set off the sirens. Besides that, this year the fire fighters will defend their champion status in the Raine and Horne Tug-of-War, but despite some urging

THE King of the Mountain Festival features the famous Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. This is a foot race in which 100 competitors run at top speed from the centre of Pomona to the top of Mt Cooroora and back down the mountain even faster. It’s tough, demanding and dangerous. A more leisurely lead up to the Festival is the King of the Mountain Poker Run, a 200km motorcycle ride through the scenic Sunshine Coast hinterland. The route is kept secret until the day, but this year it will start at Stan Topper Park in Pomona and finish at the Cooran Football Grounds. Along the route riders collect play-

ing cards at each stop, and the person with the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner. Prizes are donated by sponsors, with last year’s prize for the winning hand including a night at Yabbaloumba Retreat at Kenilworth. There are also prizes for the second best poker hand, the worst poker hand, a ladies’ draw and various raffles. The Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club also offers a prize for the oldest participating bike. Asked about the coolest bikes that have participated in the Poker Run, organiser Stephen Stewart said he has seen some great ones over the years. A couple of standouts were two 1930s In-

from local ladies, they will do that with their shirts firmly on. The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, and this year it will be held on Sunday, 26 July. Be sure to pencil that date into your diaries and calendars because it will be a great day, with something for everyone. Festival. This race is rightly famous among Australian and international competitors for the strength, speed, agility and sometimes sheer luck needed to get to the top and back in one piece. Registrations to enter the race close on July 16 (register at w w w . k i n g o f themountain.com.au). But if that’s not your idea of fun, the Festival has many other activities, including a heritage market, lots of excellent food stands, an antiques fair, side-show alley, a petting zoo and amusement rides for children, a car show for motoring enthusiasts, and for

dians, constructed with left-hand throttles rather than the standard righthand. Apparently these bikes were manufactured especially for the New York Police Department, and had left-hand throttles because most people are right-handed. So when New York’s Finest were chasing an offender and needed to shoot at them from their motorbikes, naturally they needed their right hand for their gun so the throttle needed to be controlled with the left hand. Makes sense. This year is the 9th Poker Run, and it’s hoped that the number of participants will exceed last year’s 300. The minimum legal age for a pillion passenger is 12, and many teens ride with their parents or grandparents. Some pillions are a little more hairy than the average teen, with small dogs also occasionally hitching a ride. Entry into the Pomona Poker Run is $20 per rider, and $10 per pillion. The King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, and the Poker Run is the major fund-raising event for the Festival. This year the Poker Run will be held on Sunday, 5 July. Registrations open at 8am at Stan Topper Park in Pomona, and the Run starts at 9am. It’s an easy, enjoyable ride, and all riders and spectators are welcome.

pomona Volunteer at Meals on Wheels

COOROY RAG

Garden lover, Joan Goeldner, 90, in her Cooroy home. NINETY-year-old Joan Goeldner, happily lines up for Meals on Wheels deliveries, as she says her “cooking days are over”. Having home delivered meals has allowed her to remain in her very neat Cooroy unit surrounded by her lovely garden. She was surprised to learn this week that the number of meals coming from the Pomona kitchen has dropped significantly, for no apparent reason with the number of clients on their books down from more than 40 to 28. And from the start of July, Federal Government changes to the assessment procedure could make it more difficult for new clients to qualify for deliveries. Kitchen supervisor, Di Donaldson, said this week that prospective new clients would be well advised to apply before the end of June. From July 1, meals eligibility will be externally assessed.

www.cooroyrag.com.au

Ms Donaldson believes lack of awareness is one of the factors behind their recent drop in client numbers. And Mrs Goeldner supports this view as she feels that many local people who could be receiving MOW deliveries may not be aware that the service is so readily available. She had a grandmother live to 103 and an aunty reached 102 – so she says she hopes to be receiving meals on wheels for many years yet. The three course meals are so generous that Mrs Goeldner says she gets two meals from each delivery. Deliveries are made on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a hot meal on the days of delivery and a frozen meal for the following day. Ms Donaldson said the meal service was a key factor in allowing some elderly and incapacitated people to stay in their own home rather than move into care. “Hot meals as well as cold and frozen meals for the non delivery days, are delivered to the door in the Pomona, Cooroy East and West, Eumundi, Cooran and Boreen Point areas. “Delicious home cooked meals - soup, main meal, desert and juice - cost $8.50 (subject to HACC subsidy) and dietary requirements including gluten free and diabetics are catered for. Meals are available to not only the elderly but also those recuperating from illness or an operation or for other reasons that may affect their access to nutritionally sound, home cooked meals,” Ms Donaldson said. More than 30 volunteers help to produce or deliver the meals cooked in the well setup Pomona MOW commercial kitchen but more volunteers are always welcome. Potential volunteers or new clients should phone the kitchen, 54851777, on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, between 7am and 12.30pm.

Doors for this act/show will open at 8:00 pm. Pre-sold tickets are on sale now for $30 + booking fee from Oztix and the venue and are limited, so don’t miss out on seeing this great artist live as Ed sold out two shows last August at this same venue. For the better part of 2013 / 2014 Ed Kuepper toured the nation performing his crowd-pleasing ‘By Request’ show in city centres and regional towns culminating in a sold-out performance at the City Recital Hall for Sydney Festival, whereupon our Ed assembled various members of the Sydney Chamber Orchestra for a once-in-a-lifetime radical re-working of Kuepper Klassics. “Ed Kuepper’s wisdom is evident and naturally his relationship with the songs he wrote decades ago has matured and shifted. He isn’t satisfied with rattling off old times to a parochial audience in a suburban pub. His music continues to expand, injected with new facts, new subploys, and sometimes shifting the narrative entirely.” FBI radio review For his first tour of 2015. Ed Kuepper will again tackle any industry pre-conceptions, this time though, performing a set of largely new and as-yet-unrecorded material for a tour being dubbed Nostalgia For The New and, in a further twist to the norm, Herr Kuepper will undertake the tour via a 3-week-mid-week residency in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne with spin-off weekend shows in regional areas. “I was thinking of the times you’d go out and see an artist to hear the new stuff. I kind of missed it ... felt a nostalgia for the new if you catch my drift” Ed Kuepper The new material is being workshopped with the intention of recording a new album of all new studio material his first since the wonderous Jean Lee and the Yellow Dog - before the end of the year. With each show being over two hours and without a support, our Ed has graciously allowed some of those back catalogue gems to be included in the set too. But wait, that’s not all, in between times, the nation’s first true Saint has also been busy putting down his first full-length soundtrack for the feature film Last Cab To

Darwin. Directed by Jeremy Sims and starring Michael Caton, Last Cab To Darwin will premiere at this year’s Sydney Film Festival. “For me, the chance of a lifetime really, been wanting to get into film scoring for years … it’s a very moving film which hopefully I’ve done justice to”. Ed Kuepper In the meantime get ready to lock in your mid-week winter kicks with Ed Kuepper as he sweeps down the east coast on his Nostalgia For The New tour this July / August. This photo, taken at McDermott Aviation’s Cooroy base after his flight on Saturday 30th May, shows the pilot Jason, Lawrie Ramm, Ken Ramm (with Go Pro camera still in place) and Joy Ramm. Lawrie’s daughters Sheryl Hill and Lynn Watt were also on board.

A huge Happy Birthday to a much loved Cooroy local, Lawrie Ramm, who turned 95 on the 22nd May. Lawrie taught at Cooroy State School in 1938, then again from 1965 to 1980. He is a WWII veteran and a former member of Cooroy Bowls Club, Cooroy Tennis Club and Noosa Surf Life Saving Club. Despite a life full of experiences, Lawrie had never been in a helicopter so as a birthday present the family arranged a flight with McDermott Aviation. My baby wants to feel at the time - what’s happening? LOIS Wattis - Midwife, Lactation Consultant, and Author of “New Baby 101 – A Midwife’s Guide for New Parents” - explains cluster feeding. Babies know how to feed and they know when they need to feed, and they give clear signals to let their carers know their needs – these are called Feeding Cues. These cues or signals progressively intensify as baby’s need to be fed increases. When baby signals or “cues” he is hungry, has a feed and self-releases and appears to be satisfied - then cues again, and again over a period of several hours is often called “Cluster Feeding”. When is it most common? Baby’s periods of repeated feedings often coincide with physical and mental developmental stages which are sometimes referred to as won-

Keep well this winter ARE you at the mercy of winter each year? Do those dreaded colds and flus leave you and your family with runny noses, coughs, sore throats, headaches, fevers and fatigue through the winter months? These symptoms are often the leading cause of time away from school and work. Now is the perfect time to boost your immune system and defend against cold and flu symptoms. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. If you frequently catch colds and flus, it may be that your immune system is out of balance and making you more susceptible to catching infections that are all too often shared around at this time of year. If you have nutritional deficiencies or a poor diet, stress, inadequate rest or a lack of exercise; your immune system may not be primed to recognise and respond to the viral and bacterial invaders responsible for infection. Viruses, such as Rhinovirus, are the common cause of colds and flus, rather than bacteria, despite common thought. Antibiotics target bacteria and are not effective against viral infections or the common cold. Luckily, Maria from Make a Difference Health and Fitness knows that there are natural supports for your immune defenses against both viruses and bacteria so they won’t keep bugging you and making you sick. Don’t be at the mercy of this season’s colds and flus. By acting now to boost your immune system and prime it against common invaders, you too can get through these winter months without suffering at the hands of the common cold or flu. If someone has already started kindly ‘sharing’ their bugs, then Maria can help you too. With the right high quality immune herbs and nutrients and a healthy diet Maria can help you to reduce the severity and duration of illness. Let’s look forward to winter this year and welcome it in a state of wellness. der weeks. The periods of increased need to feed in the first 6 months are fairly predictable - typically occurring at 2-3 days when baby is “calling the milk in”, usually again around 2 or 3 weeks, again at around 6 weeks, very commonly around 3 months and again around 6 months of age. However, it is also common for babies of all ages to “cluster feed” for a period of the day – typically in the late afternoon or early evening. At this time of day mother’s milk supply is usually less abundant and baby instinctively feeds more frequently, which stimulates her breastmilk production as well as meeting baby’s hunger for food and also comfort during periods of fussiness. What is the best way to deal with cluster feeding? A breastfeeding mother’s prolactin (milk making

hormone) levels are naturally highest at night time and early morning. The breasts’ response to frequent stimulation and draining later in the day is to increase milk production overnight, continually adjusting to meet baby’s growing needs. Giving supplementary feeds during this time will interfere with the mother’s body’s response to this natural process, so it is important to avoid giving formula feeds to babies who are cluster feeding. Mother’s body will adjust in sync with baby’s changing needs if she follows and responds to baby’s feeding cues. How to combat pain and fatigue associated with cluster feeding? How long does it last? To facilitate the adjustment of mother’s milk supply during a period of increased feeding she may

Relieve dry winter skin! FOR some of us, it can be a difficult few months for our skin, hair and nails. In the winter blood flow is typically diverted from the skin to keep your core warm. Add to that the chilly temperatures, dry air and indoor heating, and the moisture in our bodies can be quickly stripped leaving us dry, rough and itchy! Here are a few tips to help relieve the dreaded winter dry• Eat plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega-3 (found in avocado and oily fish) and omega6 (found in nuts, whole grains and flaxseed oil), which keep skin hydrated and clarified. A deficiency in both of these may result in dry and inflamed skin. • Avoid dehydration by drinking eight to 10 glasses of water daily and minimising your intake of caffeinated drinks and alcohol. • When heading outside, dress for the weather to avoid wind burn and chills. Hat, scarf, gloves etc. • We all love a long hot shower or bath when it’s cold, but this can actually strip the natural moisture out of the skin and hair. Turn the temperature down from hot to warm and keep it under 10 minutes a day. • Exfoliate weekly to counteract the build-up of dead skin cells. When skin is cold it doesn’t function

as well, so the natural shedding slows down. Moisturising becomes less effective, as the barrier of dead cells prevents absorption. • Apply coconut oil straight after getting out of the shower or bath. It is absorbed best while you’re skin is still damp and plump with moisture. The MCT in coconut oil act as a natural conditioner, deeply penetrating and moisturizing the skin and hair. (Tip: apply just to the bottom of your hair to avoid an oily scalp) • If you suffer from dry, rough patches on your elbows and knees. Try a simple hydrating scrub of honey and sugar. Honey can help reduce inflammation and sugar when applied topically (not ingested) can increase circulation in the skin. • Use a humidifier to replace the moisture lost from the air. If you don’t have a humidifier, try placing a bowl of water in the corner of each room. If symptoms persist or worsen, make an appointment with our Naturopathic Doctor Vanessa Doyle at Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine and see how she can help relieve your winter dry. Ph: 07 5442 5526.

need to abandon whatever plans she had for that day and ‘just feed the baby’. If she has missed a lot of sleep overnight because of a feeding frenzy, she should go back to bed with baby and feed him as he demands. Her body will respond by adjusting her milk supply within 24-48 hours. Cluster feeding is not only about the volume of milk, but also baby’s nutritional needs. It is important to understand that the constituents of the breastmilk

will also adjust in response to the baby’s changing needs. How this happens is still not fully understood, but nature provides perfectly for growing babies. Calling in help with household tasks and the care of other children will enable the breastfeeding mother to rest more and focus on her baby’s need for feeding and comfort, enhancing her body’s ability to fulfil nature’s wonderful design. Do you ever feel like you’re ‘Walking in Two Worlds?’ DO you sometimes feel you don’t belong on this planet? Wake up between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. and can’t get back to sleep? Do you ever feel like ‘you’re going crazy - forgetting things (and no it’s not dementia!). Don’t like watching violence on television? Are you supersensitive to noise, crowds and some people? Do you keep seeing the same digital numbers on clocks? Is time speeding up for you? Feel tired a lot and maybe anxious, fearful and overly emotional? Are you experiencing unexplainable physical symptoms? Feel that ‘weird’ is the new name for ‘normal?’ You just could be going through Spiritual Awakening Symptoms, says Counsellor, Lis Blake. “One important sign that we’re ‘awakening’ is that we begin to look around us and realise that the ‘world’ isn’t the way we’d really like it to be. We then could follow this by starting to focus on how we could ‘fix’ this state of affairs. “A question I was asked recently is ‘are more people experiencing depression at the present time?’ And from what I’ve noticed the answer is yes. “With the advent of the new spiritual energies in 2002 things have changed. And the reason is that as we raise our vibration (trying to keep up with Earth’s rise in energies) our own energy field increases,” says Lis. “The result is that unless we have ‘cleared’ such things as limiting beliefs, fears etc., and are handling the new energies that have been affecting the planet easily the higher energy levels squeezes our energy and makes us very aware of it’s low vibration. This feels like compression from being in a vice magnifying symptoms and is why more people might feel hopeless, useless and stuck - all symptoms of depression. And this situation will continue to be prevalent as we all go through these changes.

“As the two levels of vibrational energy are unable to live together - we have a choice to make. When we are aware of what is happening - we can start to understand that the actual energies that are uncomfortable are helping us to let go of what isn’t working for us. So in fact this is an opportunity from which to learn and move forward.” Find out more by joining Lis Blake at Cooroy Library on Saturday, 27th June, 2015 at 1.30 p.m. Further information is at: http:// www.keystoselfmastery.com/self-mastery-workshops/

Not your everyday gym THE thing about this little gym in Cooroy is that we are not here for the dollars, if we were we would have been out of business a long time ago. Wendy and the staff at Anytime Cooroy are here for the members, we welcome all walks of life into our gym, everyone is welcomed with a smile and leave knowing that are not just a number. The gym has come a long way from the dark walls and cosy weights area now to the bright walls, new equipment and the extension to open up the training areas. This has allowed us to create daily classes which are a huge success. We always had the interest in classes but never the space, we started the classes outside and our members didn’t mind. Now with the extra room we can run our classes’ rain hail or shine. Greg, our head trainer runs the circuit classes that cater for all ages. He creates a new class each week so the members don’t know what to expect. We have girls in their 20’s, men and

women ranging through to their 70’s. We cater for all. Boxing classes are also a “hit”… Wendy and Michelle love the fact that all ages participate and get a great workout. The latest class to hit Anytime Cooroy is our PUMP Class. Group Fitness Instructor Kirri Wood runs these classes and has bought a few new members to the gym. It’s a great class for toning and increasing lean muscle. A lot of mums love this class due to the Fun Factor. We would love to have feedback from the public as to what classes you would like and times. Come down and check us out!! Classes are as follows, Monday: 6.30am Aqua (Local Pool) 6pm: Boxing Tuesday: 10.30am circuit Wednesday: 9am boxing, 5pm pump class Friday: 6.30am Aqua (Local Pool), 10.30am circuit Visit Anytime Fitness at 13 Kauri Street, Cooroy or phone 5447 6488.

NOOSA District State High School Year 10 student Nicola Donnelly competed at the Wide Bay Regional Inter-school Equestrian Championships earlier this month and her two horses were placed overall champions for their height. Nicola competed in three showjumping classes for each horse, Frizbee and Skipper, with Nicola and Frizbee in the secondary 90cm class, placing 2nd, 1st and 1st. Nicola rode Skipper in the 100cm class, placing 4th, 2nd and 2nd. Top placing now allows for Nicola, Frizbee and Skipper to head to the State Championships, which are held at the end of June. Cooroora is a club united WITH the local soccer season now in full stride, Cooroora’s own club is enjoying some strong results on the field. Away from the game itself, the club is enjoying some good news too. Last week, Cooroora United president Tony McCarthy welcomed the Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards to training to celebrate the purchase of new playing and training equipment. “It’s shaping up to be a great year for the wombats. With numbers strong in the mini-roos, junior and senior ranks, the future is looking bright for the club and we’re on a real high right now,” Tony said. “It’s been some time since we’ve had any equipment updated, so this assistance is definitely appreciated by the club and its members. Sponsors play a key role in supporting any club, but Geoff and his team have been side by side with our club for a number of years now and we really appreciate the support,” he added. One of the other areas the club is looking to develop is developing better communication with its more than 250 club members. So the club is currently work-

Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank joins CUFC President Tony McCarthy, coach Sean Orpwood and the U9 and U10 Jaguars at training last week ing on launching its very own app, providing up to date information to its players and coaches and promoting the club around the region. “We’re excited about the project and it’s the next step towards where we want the club to be. We’re a pretty tight, friendly club and its part of why our members love playing here,” Tony said. For Geoff Edwards, it’s great to see the club grow-

ing and making good use of the bank’s financial support. “I get out to training and games a few times each season. I love taking it all in and it’s great to see so many enjoying playing the game they love and the support so many families, the club’s committee and so many other volunteers provide,” he said. He added the Cooroy Community Bank branch is delighted to support the

club for another season. “Cooroora United is made up of people who give so much of themselves and always seem to do it with a smile on their face. We see our sponsorship as a great fit and it was really special for me to onhand to visit the under 9 and 10 Jaguars last week. “It’s fantastic more locals are realising the banking they do with us make sponsorships like this possible. Working to benefit

our community is what we’re all about – it’s why I love my job. All our team at the Cooroy branch wish the teams the best as they push hard towards the finals in a few months’ time. Go the wombats!” Geoff said. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au.

BR- Charli, Olivia & Rhian FR-Nouvoe, Regan, Isabel & Eliza spirit all weekend. Our senior gymnast Chakera competed at Bundaberg taking out 2nd Vault, 2nd Bars, 2nd Beam, 1st Floor and 2nd overall in Level 8. Chakera also passed her level test which means she is now the highest level WAG gymnast Cooroy Gymnastics Club has had. This is a big success for the club and a great boost for our younger gymnasts to aspire to bigger things. All of the Cooroy girls Level 3-6 girls are now gearing up for the big competition in the June/July school holidays at Caloundra, State Clubs. This event brings in many gymnasts from all over QLD and also hosts a State vs State challenge which is a great opportunity for all spectators to come and watch. CONGRATULATIONS to Wendy, the Women’s Golf Director and her committee on a wellrun Women’s Open Day on 2 June 2015. There were 108 women from 11 clubs as far away as Bribie Island and Tin Can Bay with one visitor from Victoria. For the first time we had a full shot-gun start and it worked well. The field flowed nicely and everyone was able to come in and eat a relaxed lunch together. Thank you to all those who helped to organise the day, set up the clubhouse, provided morning tea and prizes for the raffles, sold tickets, checked cards and handicapped the event. Our club is noted for the support it receives from its members and this was evident on the day. Special thanks to our President Rob Powell who acted as starter and to Yvonne and Cath who did not play but came in to help out. Once again Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy in conjunction with Adina Watches presented watches to the Nett winners in the three divisions and Irene Lally presented the veterans’ trophies. We thank them for their generosity. The winners of the watches were Carole Clancy (Cooroy), Lynne Schouten (Mt Coolum) and Jocelyn Rabjohns (Cooroy). Gross winners were Judy Buss (Noosa Springs), Diane York

Lynne Schouten (Div 2 winner), Tania Stewart from Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, Jocelyn Rabjohns (Div 3 winner). (Caloundra) and Assunta Easton (Cooroy). Veterans’ trophies went to Jocelyn Rabjohns and Margie Lucas both from Cooroy. We look forward to hosting our Invitation Day on 7 July which will be sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA.
