Declare your hand for Annual Pomona Poker Run TIME to declare your hand for the 8th Annual Pomona Poker Run motorcycle ride. On Sunday 6th July, the usual quiet start to the day in the sleepy town of Pomona will be stirred by the sound of nearly two hundred bikes gathering for the start of the 8th Annual Pomona Poker Run. The Poker Run, which will wind its way through some of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’s most beautiful scenery, is a major fundraiser for the Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, a project of the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club. This, ‘big blind special’ starts at Stan Topper Park, Pomona at 9.00am and takes participants on a relaxing ride ending at a mystery destination. Staying poker-face about the run, the only hint that organiser, Stephen Stewart, will give is in the theme of this year’s run, Dam to Dam. “It’s going to be a great day,” he said. “Along the ride you collect playing cards from each stop and the person holding the best hand at the end of day is declared the winner. There will be random draws throughout the day with the chance to scoop some great prizes. We provide a delicious homemade smoko and we end the day back at the Pomona Hotel with a cold beer, sausage sizzle and presentations.” Registration for the Poker Run begins at 8.00am at Stan Topper Par, Pomona. The cost of entry is $15 a hand (per bike) plus $5 per pillion. Bacon and egg muffins will be available while you register. For pre-registration information please phone Peter Cusack on mobile 0417 756 876, or Stephen Stewart on 0419 712 235. A big thank you to our sponsors: Tyres for Bikes, Yabbaloumba Retreat, ARB Gympie, Aussie Bikers, Gympie Home Brew Supplier, Pomona Hotel, Pomona Chemist, Page Furnishers, Qld Motorcycle School, Pomona True

The Phoenix has risen from the ashes! AFTER months of uncertainty and speculation, and knocks to morale and confidence, the future of bowls in Cooroy has been given a great boost. The newly formed “Cooroy Community Bowls Club Inc” has secured a 6 month agreement with the new owners of the former Cooroy RSL Bowls Club, Listra Pty Ltd. They have also secured a contract greens keeper who will endeavour to keep the greens in tip top condition. Once the announcement was made that a future has been guaranteed, the tone on the greens changed. People were laughing and actually cheered when the announcement was made. Bowls has been an integral part of the Cooroy community for many years. Now it is hoped that it can continue to be such for a while to come. A membership drive has begun and over 130 members have been recruited. The community has really jumped on board. New players will be encouraged to come and try the game. Lawn bowls is

no longer a game for the retired or older generation. In fact, in a half a day game of bowls, a player can walk up to 1.5km, lift 92 kg, bend and stretch up to 88 times and step up 21 times. People of all ages and abilities can play. Experienced players and a qualified coach are available to assist new comers. At the moment, games are available on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. Brekky Bowls on the last Sunday of the month is always popular…a scrumptious breakfast followed by a game of bowls. Next month will see the commencement of Sunday games and a Ladies day. A community sign on day has been organised for Sunday 22nd June from 9.30am. New members are encouraged to bring along their friends, families and neighbours to have some fun and enjoy a free sausage sizzle. Novelty games will be organised as well as free coaching will be available. Membership is only $5 so new members are encouraged to join up on the day. Contact Julie Ainscough (interim Secretary) on 0409 261 953 for more information.

A plea for mercy When the proceedings open in Parliament, they ask the Lord to bless the legislation, Instead they should ask Him, to bless the suffering population, As a citizen I must plead for mercy, as my spirits slowly sink, The performance of our politicians, is driving me off the drink. They pay lip service to the conventions, but find it difficult to follow one, Their promise to improve behaviour, was surely a hollow one, Some approach any problem, with an open mind, Others approach with an open mouth, determined to be unkind. They scream at each other in the House, creating an unseemly din, Pay no heed to manners, there’s an election they have to win. When the Speaker kicks a member out, she loves to quote a rule, It’s being made to leave the room as if you were still at school. After the election, they promised to behave, but were soon at each other’s throats, About the economy, the ABC, the climate change, the boats, The Budget’s out, but hasn’t passed the Senate yet, The citizens still don’t know for sure, what they’re going to get. (I still can’t fathom why the Budget targets things like health, education, the pension, Yet sport and all its largesse, doesn’t get a mention) The parties are rocked by scandals, the rippers-off, the rorters, And aren’t the media having a ball, those stirring commentators, those reporters. When you consider this lovely, lucky, country, you have to be really sorry, The world seems to regard us, as just a great big quarry, All the carry-on, it’s worrying, it’s weird and quite bizarre, We don’t want this performance, we want government without the hoo-ha. When you are throwing mud, some of it always sticks, But you certainly don’t need theatre, when you’ve got politics!!!

Water Festival and fishing comp at Lake Macdonald THE 10th Annual Noosa Festival of Water will be held on Sunday 29th June at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre. The Festival will mark almost 50 years since the construction of the Lake and the day that Sir Thomas Hiley opened the valve to provide water for the people of Tewantin and Noosa. The Festival is an important Green June event. Through the range of activities, entertainment and information available at the Festival, the Lake Macdonald Catchment Care group aims to highlight our unique local ecology and provide opportunities for people to learn about and experience some of the attributes of the adjacent Noosa and Great Sandy Biospheres in a location which exemplifies much of what is special about the local area. The Lake Macdonald Catch and Release Bass fishing competition will also be held on Sunday 29th June starting at 6.30 am at Mary River Cod Park at the end of Collwood Rd, Cooroy. The Fishing Comp is open to adult and child anglers fishing from the shore, from a kayak or for a limited number of boats with electric motors. Competition sponsors Hooked on Angling and Outdoors are encouraging Anglers to register before by the 20th June to be in the running for a $500 prize pack.

The Festival starts in the Botanic Gardens at 10 am with the Noosa Pipe Band warming up the Amphitheatre for the Gubbi Gubbi dancers, who will be followed by dynamic young country rock artist Caitlyn Shadbolt, local favourites the Famous Jimmies, then the smooth sounds of Andrea Kirwin and band. news Community to take charge of biosphere future
COOROY RAG
NOOSA Council has endorsed a new way forward for its Biosphere Reserve project that it’s confident will help to create a smarter, more sustainable economy in our beautiful environment. The old, council owned and controlled model is on the way out. The new Noosa Biosphere structure will still have council input and support, but the community itself will be in the driver’s seat. Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot ran Noosa Council when the UNESCO Biosphere status was awarded in 2007. He said UNESCO’s Biosphere ideals are all about encouraging us to build a strong, smart economy in harmony with our environment, and he believes the new management model will help to achieve that. Mr Abbot said the agreed structure emerged from months of discussion with input from many of the hard-working volunteers involved and stakeholders across
the community. “It’s a compromise” he said “that strengthens my belief in local democracy.” Mayor Noel Playford said he was confident most of Noosa will support the community-controlled Biosphere framework that’s been endorsed. Mr Playford said “The detail, the flesh we still have to put on the bones of this concept, will come after even more community consultation in the months ahead.” The council-owned Noosa Biosphere Limited company will wind up later this year. It will be replaced by a Trust and an incorporated Association made up of the volunteers who take part in Biosphere projects. The mayor says the Trust structure is the best custodian for the Noosa community, controlling the Biosphere’s assets, planning and reporting. While the council will initially appoint the five directors of the Trustee Company, vacancies
will in future be filled by the board itself, except for one position that will be filled by council. The Trust structure is seen as the best way to attract funding to the Biosphere Reserve from grants and donations, including support from the council. At the co-ordination level, the new structure will be further removed from the council, with day-to-day operations run by a community-based Association. Mayor Playford said there would be significant funding in the council budget to be delivered next month for clever initiatives and projects that fit in with the Biosphere’s aims. He said “In the end, what most people tell me they want is to see our ratepayers’ dollars spent wisely on projects that help deliver the Biosphere vision, and that’s a clever economy that sees Noosa prosper while protecting our very special environment and lifestyle.”

Mayor guest speaker at CARA meeting June Guest Speaker: Mayor Cr Noel PlayfordThursday 19 June, 6:00pm CWA Hall, Maple St, Cooroy. The Mayor will give an update of the six month’s hard work that he and his fellow Councillors have been engaged in to kick-start the new Council, and implement policy changes and election promises. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q & A session and make suggestions on what assistance Council can provide to achieve the goals of hinterland residents on such issues as: Amendments to the Noosa Plan over the next year; The new Biosphere Reserve management structure; The role of Council in supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs;
Effects of intensive agriculture on rural lifestyle landowners, and Holding the line on rates yet still providing the range of essential services. Both CARA members and the general public are welcome to attend. Cr Noel PlayfordCr Playford grew up in the Kin Kin and Pomona areas. He was the mayor of Noosa Shire for nine years from 1988 to 1997, during which time he famously introduced the population cap and changed the town plan so there would be no more high-rise in Noosa. Noel retired as mayor in 1997, but remained a councillor until 2004. A member of Noosa Parks Association since the 1970s, he was awarded an honorary life membership in 1996. In
1998, Noel was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to economic development and the environment. As the Noosa Independence Alliance’s spokesman in recent years, Noel headed the campaign for deamalgamation, and subsequently was overwhelmingly elected as mayor of the new council.Cr Playford believes that decision-making works better at a local level than by edicts handed down by public servants many kilometres away. He supports local community groups, since he understands that they know their best community and the issues affecting it. He continues to form partnerships with these groups and regularly meets with community leaders.

Silly Birds - a modern Australian fable for kids Gregg Dreise
IT’S hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys! This quintessentially Australian truism is at the heart of a wonderful new children’s picture book by Gregg Dreise. Gregg is a teacher at Federal State School, and en ex student of Noosa District State High. Following in footsteps of his talented mother Lyla Dreise, Gregg loves to write. “I grew up surrounded by my mum’s poetry, her jokes she sends in to newspapers. Many magazines have been filled with her recipe’s and wonderful tips. So I am proud to follow my mum’s footsteps and publish stories.” Released by Magabala Books on June 1, Silly Birds recounts the ups and downs of Maliyan, a proud
eagle who always looks, listens and sees things from a long way away. When he teams up with Wagun the turkey, the two friends start doing sillybird things and life at the billabong takes a decided turn for the worse – the place gets messy, all the food gets eaten and no-one seems to care for each other. However Maliyan soon comes to his senses, and finds a way to turn things around – well, almost! Gregg has produced striking, richly-textured illustrations of Australian animals to illustrate his gently humorous morality tale about choosing your friends wisely and listening to the wisdom and experience of others. “A lot of my family, including my father Rod, paint. It is a great relaxing way to let your stresses dissolve into something creative. The paintings in this story took a lot longer to create than the actual story itself.” Silly Birds is a story with a very important moral. Always surround yourself with positive people who allow you to follow your dreams. It is never too late to review your life and see if you are heading in the right direction. With the help of family and a few good friends, you can reshape your life to achieve something wonderful. You can order a copy online, or at good quality bookstores. Or you can join in with some holiday fun at both the Noosa and Cooroy Libraries on the school holidays (3rd & 4th of July). Gregg will be helping to celebrate NAIDOC week with story telling, music and assisting with boomerang painting.

news Your end of financial year check list - Part 1 Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy THE end of the financial year is upon us and that means it’s time to get your finances organised and collate all your details relating to your tax return. A well prepared return could result in some timely funds being returned to your pocket. Organising your tax return early also gives you an advantage being that most of your income sources and claims should be fresh in your mind. Possible claims can be easily missed when six or twelve months have gone by. Income items that you may need to collate include wages or salary from your employers over that last twelve months. This is generally a group certificate and should be provided to you automatically. Chase them up if you don’t receive it. Interest income is another source that needs to be included. This is income that has been earned on your bank accounts credit funds such as savings, investments or term deposit accounts. Your bank will be able to provide you with this information. Income earned off any shares that you hold is important. These dividends should be outlined in a statement you receive from the company issuing the shares. If you don’t have this statement your accountant may be able to access this information for you. If you own an investment property, you will need to include any rental income that you have received during the year. Your managing realestate agent will be able to issue you with a statement detailing this income. You then should collate any possible deductions that you have. Income protection insurance is one that you need to include. You may be paying this as a monthly debit to you bank account. The insurance company should send you a statement outlining your payment. Bank fees can be claimed. Source them from your bank account statements or your bank directly. Uniforms costs associated with your work may be relevant. These include purchasing
of new uniforms and the laundering or dry cleaning of them. Receipts are good. Did you engage in any study or training associated with your work throughout the year? Costs associated with this may be relevant. Do you use your car for work? Running costs may need to be included. Investments loans over assets such as property or shares can have interest and costs included as possible deductions. Additionally running costs associated with the property may also be included. Receipts or bank statements should outline this information. This list has certainly not exhausted all possible income and claims, they are just a few of the main ones you may need to think about. Your accountant is always a good source of information. Your bank will also be able to assist you with statements and information relating to your accounts and loans. In the next edition of Cooroy Rag, I’ll continue with the end of financial year check list with a few more items to check off. If you would like to discuss your finances or current banking relationship, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Libraries get ‘appy NOOSA Council has made a cyberleap, receiving $20,000 from State Library of Queensland to buy a ‘smart table’ to extend the libraries’ technology services. The smart table has a large interactive horizontal screen that looks like a coffee table and allows many people to use it at once. It will be the focal point of a new program, “Get ‘appy together” which brings together people of all ages to explore new technology, create content and engage with modern app-based formats. Collections and Programs Coordinator, Tracey King, is excited about the future workshops that can now be offered by libraries using the table. ‘There will be interactive workshops for all members of the community who love to see and learn about new technologies,’ she said. ‘The world of devices is becoming increasingly smaller – tablets, mini-tabNew smart table coming soon to Noosa Library Service
lets, smartphones and smartwatches which can be quite challenging for people learning to use them. The great thing about the table is that you can learn in a group and create as a group, taking away the isolation and scariness of using new gadgets on your own.’ There will be workshops at both Cooroy and Noosaville Libraries include creating photo-stories, writers’ brainstorming sessions, creating newsletters for youth, and brain-health gaming for seniors. The smart table will also be available for community groups to use for their own programs and can also be used to access key council information such as flood mapping and land use plans. This project is made possible with financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland’s Technology Trendsetters program. Australia’s growing population - get ready By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* THERE are 5.2 million boomers in Australia born from 1946 to 1964. This compares with six million generation Xers born between 1965 and 1983. Generation Y, born across the 18 years to 2002, is expected to peak at about 7.4 million next decade.[1] With Australia’s population expected to swell by mid-century and the first wave of baby boomers reaching retirement, building up the nest egg has become more important than ever.[2] Late boomers, generation X and Y have contributed to their superannuation fund for most of their working lives and are expected to be largely self-funded in retirement from the mid-2020s onwards. However, there is a large gap for the baby boomers retiring now between the superannuation they have and the amount they need for retirement. Either generation X and Y will be forced to support them in the form of more taxes, or Australia will need to import more taxpayers to spread the load.[3] Generational financial strategies Each generation has its own financial challenges and strategies vary depending on the stage of life people face. Age 25-35: With a higher disposable income and less family expenses, this is a good time to accumulate assets.Aged 3545: Paying down the mortgage and increasing home equity is the focus. Age 45-55: Now is the time to shift focus to extra contributions to the retirement nest egg. Debt elimination remains a priority.Age 55-65: Preservation of investment capital becomes more of a priority in addition to accumulation of capital. The last years of work should be devoted to topping up superannuation contributions. Source: ‘Super success achieved in stages;, 28 July, 2013, The Sydney Morning Herald, viewed 15 November Market conditions Whether the retirement age should be lifted to 70 along with compulsory superannuation being increased from 9.25% to 12% are among the policies being explored[4] to cope with a “big Aus-

tralia”. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently projected the population would surge to 38 million by 2051.[5] The future for Big Australia A chart that featured in a November 30 article in The Australian by demographer Bernard Salt shows two possible pathways beyond 2012. One assumption puts net overseas migration at 140,000 a year and the other at 240,000 a year. The second chart shows the net addition to the retirement population averaged about 40,000 a year between 1950 and 2010. From 2010, more than 100,000 people annually joined the retirement ranks, with the number tipped to rise to 140,000 a year. Salt argued net overseas migration of 242,000 people a year in the next 40 years could provide the skills and tax required to support the transition of baby boomers into retirement. Government spending across housing, health, infrastructure and pensions will have to increase further to accommodate greater boomer numbers. Whatever stage you are at in your life, there is never a better time for you to plan your future. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Originally from Mackay, Joe, Kate and two sons Harry (10) and Archie (9) are delighted with the response and support they have received from the commu-
nity since taking over the business in April. “This heritage listed shop holds a lot of history, including some wonderful local people who have owned it,” said Joe. “We have an ongoing commitment to provide our customers with the best and freshest fruit and vegetables, and whenever possible, will endeavour to buy locally to support the community.” Football enthusiasts will be interested to know that Joe played for the Parramatta Eels from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. He was coached by Mick Cronin and played alongside Sterlo and Brett Kenny and against legends such as Big Mel and King Wally. Kinderballet for little ones who love to dance DANCE Empire offers classes in Beerwah, B o k a r i n a , Maroochydore, Peregian Beach, Noosa & Yandina especially developed for children from 18 months old! Dance Empire is the only school on the Sunshine Coast offering Kinderballet accredited classes. The aim of Kinderballet is to introduce the basics of Classical Ballet through imagination and creative movement. Kinderballet is a ballet program developed specifically for children aged between 2 and 5 years, as an introduction to Classical Ballet. The challenge with teaching this age group is to hold their attention while introducing them to basic movement principals. At Dance Empire, the children learn Classical ballet steps and develop basic gross motor skills
through imagery and story-telling. Our Kinderballet programs are strongly influenced by current pre-school education trends in teaching through play acknowledging that preschool children are a highly imaginative age group with pretend play being an important aspect of child development. The program is structured so they can fully enjoy the experience of ballet at a young age. With quality, handpicked teachers, and limited class size numbers all without the pressure and expense of big concerts and costumes, as this can be overwhelming for children so young. Knowing that average families need to be careful with money we made the program for the wider community. Making it affordable and family friendly was very important to us and we did
away with the need of exact uniforms, often a great expense when wanting your child to try a new activity. Allowing children the freedom to dress as they choose opened up the experience of ballet class for young children to come in their favourite fairy dresses or that beloved dress from Grandma, something young children get very excited about. The music is also our own and unique to Kinderballet – not Hi-5 and the wiggles CDs. The music has been developed specifically for us, our program and our little dancers. Our program is set around the Adventures of Bella Ballet Bear. A program designed to introduce the basics of classical ballet, in an imaginative way. So the children are learning through play – a very popular concept in mod-
ern education. We stimulate imagination; individual attention engages each child as all children are prompted for their input to the class. Kinderballet has developed a program that introduces music with movement in an environment that children enjoy. They are being active and having fun at the same time. Physical activity in children is more important than ever in today’s society. Our classes are an excellent opportunity for children and parents to make friends and broaden their social circle. Social skills are strengthened as young children learn their role as a student in a class, taking instruction from a teacher and learn to deal with other children and not being the centre of the universe. Every aspect of the Kinderballet program
has been carefully and expertly designed by us to give young children a unique and exciting experience with the world of ballet! Dance Empire offers the following Kinderballet programs: “Mummy & Me “ for children 18months to 3 years, children don’t need to be toilet trained. This class duration is 30 minutes. For the “Kinderballet” (“Tots”, “Kiddies” & “Mixed”) programs - Pre-school age - generally ages 3-5 years. Children from as young as 2½ years old may be admitted (although this is more often than not too young). If a young child is able to take instruction and can separate from their primary care giver for the duration of a class (45min), then they are welcome to come along and have a trial. THERE are approximately 30,000 species of Orchids in the world with around 700 of these found in Australia. Of the ones found here 75% are Terrestrial. Terrestrial means they grow in the ground. One of these orchids is Pterostylis or commonly called Green Hood Orchids. These plants grow across several states with large colonies in the southern states. Like most of our orchids they are endangered because of habitat clearing for housing and agriculture so it is imperative we save these gems through cultivation and setting aside areas in there habitat. To learn more about these and other orchids the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society meets at Tinbeerwah Hall on the first Saturday of each month. The meeting starts at 1.30 pm so we like to be there by 1 pm. The club is fortunate to have Alan Parkes from Nambour as the guest speaker at the July meeting. Alan will give us an insight into how he grows Pterostylis in this area. It will be very interesting. For more information contact John Green 54832764 or visit the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage web site.
A CONNECT2 PARENTING coffee club is coming to Cooroy in July, designed to support parents and carers with the challenges of being a parent. Run by United Synergies, the program will offer a range of practical support and educational experiences as well as an opportunity to meet and socialise with other parents. Connect2Parenting has been designed by United Synergies to provide skills to help parents and carers to better cope with the challenges they face caring for children aged 0 to 11. Program Coordinator Amanda Bovingdon said the program provided people with positive parenting opportunities, experiences and skills to safely and better cope with the demands of parenting. “Parents can often feel isolated, lonely or overwhelmed by their parental responsibilities, particularly if they are new to the area and lack family support. “Connect2Parenting gives people an opportunity to connect with other parents and carers who understand what they are going through, without judgement and in a relaxed, social environment. We are using a mentor model to ensure people have someone to talk
to and share their challenges and will have regular guest speakers and family get-togethers to help people feel less isolated. “Parenting can be a really tough job, particularly if you don’t have a network of other parents or carers to share it with. “Sometimes a problem shared can be a problem solved – when you know you are not alone and the challenges you face are not necessarily unique losing the feeling of being overwhelmed can be extremely liberating and energising,” Amanda said. The program is currently offered in Noosa/Tewantin and Gympie/ Cooloola. It will start in Cooroy next month. Activities the group engages in include mosaics, art therapy, anger management sessions, relaxation, and presentations from regular guest speakers including a dietician, nutritionist, psychologist, and child health expert. To be eligible to participate, you must be a carer, parent or grandparent of a child aged 0 to 11. For more information, contact Amanda on 5442 4277 or 0457 766 469 or email: abovingdon@unitedsynergies.com.au

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 Social and Community Studies students enjoyed a visit from Senior Constable Gareth Alexander from the Cooroy Police, who spoke to the students about his role as a police officer as a part of the students’ study of crime and punishment this term. Senior Constable Gareth Alexander told the students about his career pathway and explained how different his job is now in comparison to his earlier policing on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. “In Cooroy, the police are given more responsibilities. Jobs which are normally taken on by more specialist police officers in the larger towns are taken on by us,” Snr Constable Alexander said. Students learnt that the constable’s most diffi-
cult part of his job was telling parents about the death of their child, which is most often the result of a road fatality. The class were surprised to learn that Snr Constable Alexander had booked a friend who broke the law and that
the only time he had ever fired his weapon was to euthanise animals that were in agony. “I can’t stand nor do I tolerate cruelty or brutality towards children or animals,” Snr Constable Alexander said. The Year 12’s found
the Snr Constable’s insights into policing fascinating and educational. “I now want to be a police officer,” Kirra Lundgaard said. The Snr Constable advised the students to treat the police as they would like to be treated.

Kindness Club Excursion ON Thursday 29th May, 16 children from the Kindness Club, with educators Lisa Hill and Wendy Scott, embarked on a mission to spread happiness in the township of Cooroy. The Kindness Club was formed by the children of Cooroy Outside School Hours Care (COSHC) earlier this year. The aim of the club is to spread happiness through random acts of kindness and to inspire others to do the same. “The children have many wonderful and original ideas on how to show kindness to others” said Ms Hill. The Club holds a meeting once a fortnight to discuss ideas and acts of kindness the children have either experienced themselves or witnessed others carry out. The children also plan ways of sharing joy and bringing a smile to people’s faces. Our minutes are tabled each meeting as a record of our ideas and wonderful kind acts. To date the Kindness Club have handed out Easter eggs to Mums and Dads at a local play centre, shared books from the COSHC library with young local children, given roses to cleaning and office staff of Cooroy State School, and presented our wonderful Chappy with a photograph collage of the children’s drawings thanking her for all that she does. Most recently was our excursion into Cooroy. The children spent two weeks making crepe paper flowers in a variety of colours and sizes which were then scented with
a beautiful perfume. The children spent an hour and a half wishing local business people and shoppers a lovely afternoon and a gift of a handmade flower. The children loved the reactions from people. Surprise followed closely by delight was the most common response. The children were told many times “You have made my day!” The children in turn were treated with an act of kindness when a lovely gentleman working at Jamaica Blue gave each and every child a marshmallow in return! The children were very pleased and grateful! “The children’s enjoyment and wonder at bringing a smile and a little happiness to someone’s day was heart warming” said Ms Scott The Kindness Club handed out 85 flowers in total. They wish they could have touched more lives that day and visited more businesses. Maybe the people the Kindness Club members spoke to will also show someone else a kindness for no reason at all and make someone else’s day? “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted” by fabulist Aesop For more information about the COSHC Kindness Club, to share ideas, or suggest future acts of kindness, please contact us on cooroy_oshc@bigpond.com. We would also love to hear about your random acts of kindness! Cooroy proving a popular choice for Sunshine Coast locals year we had about 8,000 people in town for the main parade…we decorate the town and have a beautiful Christmas tree that we light up each year. “The Cooroy Fusion Festival in May brings together the Cooroora Woodworkers, the Cooroy-Noosa Orchid Society and lots of music, food stalls and workshops about things like art, writing and sustainable living. “Local markets operate every Sunday and Thursday and we now have the Cooroy Originals each month, which is run by the same organisations that runs the Peregian Originals, and so far we have had around 1,000 people to each event so it has been fantastic.”
With so much to offer, Ms Taylor is not surprised that more and more people want to discover Cooroy. “It is such a beautiful place to live and we have such fantastic natural attractions, like the Noosa Trails, Lake Macdonald, Botanical Garden, all of those sorts of things are amazing for a town of this size.. and it sort of adds up to the perfect place to want to live, whether you have a family or are retired, it has that perfect mix.” Ms Taylor said. COOROY RAG
From the House by Peter Wellington MP
IN a bid to stroke his own ego by rushing the Treasury back to a surplus, our Treasurer has brought down a budget whose core aim is selling off $34 billion - or 13 per cent - of the state’s income-earning assets, which I believe will result in decades of economic hardship for all Queenslanders. The privatisation of assets will increase costs, reduce services and, I believe, cause massive job losses because their owners are driven by profit and answer only to their shareholders. The treasurer had touted cuts to pensioners’ concessions but thankfully the government has back flipped on this idea. (More on this in my next column) I have no doubt recent changes to the Electoral Act will encourage corruption and take this State back to the bad old days of the Joh era. Under these new laws, you can donate up to $12,400 to a political party or politician without declaring it and there is no limit to the amount you can donate. Another law called ‘Policy development fund” allows taxpayer’s funds to go to the major political parties with no criteria or guidelines is just a slush fund. The Minister refused to answer questions about accountability including the amount of money involved and why it was limited to the major parties. When you line up to vote next time, you will be asked to prove your identity. The oversee committee of which I am a Member
examined this law and found no evidence of significant identity fraud in this State. I voted against this as it will mean long delays at the polling booths and impact on the disadvantaged. Former Member for Stafford Chris Davis said he couldn’t support these changes, absented himself from the vote and resigned the same night. It was disgraceful the way he was treated by the Newman Government who put him under enormous pressure. Chris is a decent and honourable man and will be sadly missed in the Parliament. My Burqa Bill (Identification Law Amendment Bill) was defeated and the irony is you can’t enter a bank wearing a bike helmet or hoodie but, it’s okay to cover your face with a burqa and there is nothing the bank can do about it. This Bill which would have required the removal of face covering for identification purposes was supported by the crossbenches and dubbed ‘racist’ by the Attorney General. What rubbish, my Bill was supported by former president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils who said that wearing the burqa had nothing to do with Islam. In my speech on the Electricity and Other Legislation Amendment Bill I highlighted the plight of small halls and community groups that are charged commercial rates and called for the establishment of a new category for not-for-profit community organisations.
Food for thought FOR a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn’t understand growth, it would look like complete destruction.

BRENDAN and Peta Sharp have recently bought and taken over management of Peter’s Café and say they are loving running a business in Cooroy. The couple moved to Qld just under two years ago from central Victoria. “We lived near Daylesford a small tourist town renowned for its mineral springs which had many fine restaurants and cafes. We worked together in several restaurants and cafes in the region,” said Peta. Brendan has managed cafes and hotels for most of his career and as well as a long career in hospitality also, Peta has done a few years of office work, running the office of a local organic farm. “While Victoria was home for a long time, we had a dream to one day move to the warmer north and run our own breakfast lunch cafe and here we are in Cooroy,” enthuses Peta. “We have been very openly welcomed by the local community already including Peter and Anette at Cooroy Gourmet Pies. Our plans for Peter’s Cafe include fresh local produce wherever possible, branching out into house made, take home jams, chutneys and sauces creating a larder feel to the cafe space, along with free wifi, a lounge area and a more comfortable feel for locals to come in and relax for a while. “We will still continue with the takeaway focus at the front of the
Brendan and Peta Sharp with Peter and Annette cafe with regular tradie specials and will most definitely be keeping Peter’s Cooroy Gourmet Pies as a feature menu item.
Stay tuned for our Facebook page, which will feature a changing daily special, and cafe updates and news.

THE natural way to beauty is to have healthy skin cells. When you think of healthy skin cells, think of a baby’s skin. A baby’s skin hasn’t been exposed to any of the toxins we encounter daily, it is still pure. Our skin will never get back to that purity but we can get healthier, more nourished skin. To help you visualize the difference between the cells, think of a plum versus a prune. They both start out looking the same, but one stays fresh and plump and one dries out and becomes a prune. Which would you rather have? So how do we do that? 1. Think about what products you are putting on your skin. 2. Are those really suited to your skin type? 3. Do you have a daily skincare routine? The reason you need to question this is because every day we expose our skin to pollutants, make-up, dirt and air-conditioning and all the normal daily activities that water alone wont cleanse. 4. Have you got the right cleanser for your skin? 5. Are you using a moisturizer that fully penetrates the skin cells? This is the key. 6. What is required in a moisturizer to penetrate the skin? Vitamins and minerals are what the skin produces naturally from birth, but as we age all these vitamins and minerals get diminished. This affects the cells by causing dehydration, ageing lines, sunspots, pigmentation etc,. Our aim is to get those diminished vitamins and minerals back into the skin to return from a prune to a plum. Every woman’s desire is to be a plum not a prune. Wouldn’t it be wise to use products that contain these natural vitamins and minerals rather than products with chemicals? You can
do this without breaking the bank. For the answer to all these questions take advantage of Cooroy Body Bliss’ facial special and enjoy a free skin analysis and ask Natasha as many questions as you need. Natasha has a wealth of knowledge in all areas of the Beauty Industry and has further studied Natural Medicine which has given her a deeper understanding of how the skin functions and what is required for the best results. Cooroy Body Bliss has been servicing the Cooroy local market area for over ten years, albeit with several moves, but is now in a permanent location at 44 Maple Street, next to Eden Hospital. Natasha’s expertise ranges from Beauty Therapy, Make-Up Artistry, Massage Therapist, studies in Natural Medicine and is currently undertaking further studies in Kinesiology which also adds to her growing services for her clients. COOROY RAG
EVERY Tuesday at 9.30am, a group of older adults join Lucy Cloonan for some gentle exercise at the Miva Street Church Hall in Cooroy. These low impact exercise classes are designed to target the important things that we need to work on as we age including cardiovascular health, weight training for strength and bone density, co-ordination, balance and flexibility. Exercise also improves mental health which can help with depression, stress and anxiety. Classes are also a great way to make new friends and keep warm as the colder weather sets in! The cost is $14 for a 1 hour class. There is also a stretch and flexibility class in Eumundi on Fridays at 10am. For further information on classes please call Lucy on 0412 489313.
Pilates and yoga classes now available HINTERACTIVE Physio have oped the doors to their new clinic at 11 Garnet Street. Pilates and Yoga classes are in full swing and owners of Hinteractive Physio, Craig and Rebecca Steele, say there has already been a lot of interest in the new classes. Pilates mat classes, pilates equipment classes as well as yoga will be on offer at times suitable for most people. “We have decided to offer Saturday morning yoga and pilates classes to allow more people to access these classes” says Rebecca. There will also be discounts for purchase of 10 session passes, 3 month and 6 month memberships. Pilates and Yoga instructor Cassie O’Grady will be offering beginners yoga and pilates classes as well as more advanced classes. There are many dif-
fering styles of yoga with many different names, but the style and approach which shapes the yoga presented by Cassie is Purna Yoga. Purna Yoga is taught at Byron Yoga Centre where Cassie trained. Purna means complete or integrated. A class or session with Cassie will include pranayama or breath work, asanas (poses) and meditation, encouraging both stamina and stillness to optomise balance in body, mind and spirit. As Cassie is also pilates trained, she delivers a class focused on alignment and correct muscle recruitment. All classes can be altered to suit most individual needs and goals. For more information on classes or how physiotherapy may benefit you, please contact Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

Sensible living the topic of free information evening THE first topic for a series of free information evenings run by Make A Difference Health & Fitness is ‘Sensible Living’. With our stressful, busy lives, many people are fatigued and there are an increasing number of people with persistent unremitting tiredness. If you have to drag yourself everywhere or struggle through the day, then this ‘Sensible Living’ information night is a night you do not want to miss. The ‘Sensible Living’ information evening will cover many topics, including fatigue, cellular function, improved energy and vitality, healthy skin, good digestion, weight maintenance, cardiovascular function, healthy ageing, mood and brain health, improved general wellbeing and immunity. “We are excited about our new information evenings as we are passionate about improving the health of people in our area and look forward to meeting locals who are also interested in health. In today’s world, many people are being overwhelmed with what is best for them or where they need to start to im-
prove their health. The aim of these information evenings is to make it simple for people,” says Make A Difference Health & Fitness’ Naturopath, Maria Sturre. It doesn’t need to be difficult to improve your health. To help you get started to beat the fatigue Maria suggests, “Get adequate and consistent amounts of sleep each night; eat a well-balance diet, including plenty of water throughout the day; exercise regularly; learn what helps you to relax; avoid stimulants and excess alcohol; take our healthy ageing test to determine how well your body is coping.” The Sensible Living Night is at the CWA Hall on Thursday 3 rd July from 6.30pm. Cost is free and open to everyone. Please RSVP by 27 June either by telephone on 5442 6179 or 0407 597 748 or via email on info@madhf.com.au. Visit their website www.madhf.com.au to add your email to their monthly newsletter list to obtain valuable health information and future monthly invites to other health and fitness related information nights.

Fan the flames of your Digestive Fire GET more energy, a better night’s sleep and even lose weight by keeping your digestion strong. We can think of our Stomach like a pot bubbling away over a fire, this is our Digestive Fire. When the fire is strong, the food and drink that we put into our ‘pot’ gets easily converted into Qi (energy) and Blood and our digestive system and body function with ease. When this fire is weak, our body has a hard time digesting whatever is put into our ‘pot’ resulting in lowered energy, digestive imbalances, weight gain and sluggish metabolism. So what puts this Digestive Fire out? Consuming too many ‘cooling’ and ‘damp’ foods. Cooling foods weaken the heat of the fire and damp foods smother the fire. Now cooling foods in Chinese Medicine basically means too many foods that are cold or raw whereas damp foods are mostly
dairy products, oily and highly processed food. Think cereal and oj for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, fish and chips for dinner and ice-cream for dessert. The fire gets dampened by having the first two meals of the day as cold meals, and then there is little energy to digest a big cooked dinner at the end of the day. This leads to a diminished Fire or a deficient digestive energy. Symptoms of weak digestion: nausea, poor appetite, bloating, overweight without overeating, or underweight and unable to gain weight, loose bowels, general weakness, fatigue, food sensitivities, nervous indigestion and haemorrhoids. When the digestive fire is weakened, anything we put into our ‘pot’ doesn’t get digested efficiently and takes much longer to be converted into Qi and Blood and therefore sits around in the Stomach and eventually creates Dampness within the body.
Symptoms of Dampness can include Candida; phlegm producing coughs; painful joints leading to restricted movement and possibly numbness; swelling and oedema; a feeling of ‘heaviness’ in the body particularly the head; lack of appetite; bloating and diarrhoea. But it really doesn’t take much effort to tips the digestive odds in your favour. If you already have some of the symptoms listed above, then you want to make your food and drink as easy to digest as possible. This then gives the digestive ‘pot’ and fire a bit of a break whilst it regains its mojo. If you keep the food and drink as close in consistency and temperature to soup as possible, your digestion will thank you for it, and give you great rewards in return. By blowing on those last dying embers to build your fire back to former glory you will notice improved digestive function, increased energy, a better night’s
sleep and even weight loss. Even if you don’t have the above symptoms, it is especially wise in Winter to fan the flames by eating wholesome, warming and nourishing foods. Try oat porridge with stewed fruit, honey, and cinnamon, for breakfast; homemade soup with toasted sprouted (essene) bread and butter for lunch; vegetable or meat ragout with quinoa for dinner. Drink room temperature water and hot drinks throughout the day to round it all out. You get the idea, and if your digestion is feeling strong i.e. none of the above listed symptoms, then throw in a salad, green smoothie and a chia pudding here or there. By making these simple changes to your daily routine, you will notice huge benefits to your overall wellbeing and your energy for the day will be more balanced and sustained. Fire creates fire, so by keeping your digestion

Antiques and Collectables Fair Continues the Tradition THE Pomona Antiques & Collectables Fair comes alive once again and this year it’s on the weekend of the 26th and 27th of July. Come along and enjoy the experience of the King of the Mountain at the same time. This Fair is run by Clive and Jane Ford and, with the help of supporters and friends, has been an annual fund raiser for not for profit organisations. In its ninth year, this year all profits will be shared by two wonderful and deserving organisations - Katie Rose Cottage and Pomona’s own Community Hall. The Fair is again being held in the historic Pomona Memorial Hall which has served many generations of Pomona residents and visitors since 1926. Doors will open at 8am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday and close at 4pm on both days. If you enjoy the Antiques Roadshow come along and see the reality, have a chat with 22 of the most knowledgeable dealers in Queensland and northern New South Wales. Browse the stalls and pick up a bargain. Every variety of antique and collectable is on show from toys and tools, fine furniture, paintings,
www.cooroyrag.com.au
china, books, coins and military memorabilia, linen and art deco. It will all be here. Last year the Antiques & Collectables Fair attracted a record of well over 1500 visitors and there is an expectation that this record will be broken again this year as the tradition of this Fair spreads to all parts of Queensland. The high standard of family catering will yet again be a feature of this fair. Delicious gourmet pies, cakes, scones (with cream and jam), juices and soft drinks will all be available at family friendly prices. Buy some scones (with cream and jam) and a
cup of tea or coffee and have a Devonshire moment. Ample seating both undercover and open air will be available on the south side of the hall to provide for your comfort in this relaxed and friendly town. Entry fees have remained unchanged for several years at a very affordable $4 for all adults and as usual all children accompanying an adult will be admitted free of charge. So come along to Pomona and enjoy the Big Weekend, browse the antiques and soak up the ambience of this unique and delightful slice of the Noosa Shire.
Letter to the editor Betrayed THE community of Pomona has just received a cold and unfeeling letter from the ANZ bank advising them that they will be closing the branch down in October. This is yet again another betrayal of a hinterland community and businesses by a multi national organisation whose decision makers are faceless, overpaid bureaucrats who wield their power from their ivory towers and are too gutless to face the community that has supported them for years. We will transfer your accounts to Cooroy they say, but they just don’t get it these city slickers who never face real people. They don’t get that it is about community, it is about social interaction, we like being able to go to a branch and speak face to face with bank staff, many who live in the community they serve. Without a bank in town it is feared that the town businesses will suffer as people are forced to go to Cooroy they may as well do some other shopping there as well. Stephen Hilditch Pomona

COOROY RAG NOOSA District State High School Year 8 and 9 Rugby League students finished up at the finals with some really pleasing results. The Year 8’s finished runner up in the district and the Year 9’s won the district final convincingly (40-6) and will now go onto play the northern district for a spot in the regional final. Coach Martin Stieger was impressed with both team’s successful season.
