Family festival fun on the Lake

NOOSA FESTIVAL OF WATER – Sunday June 30, 10am to 3pm will be the 15th year the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) has hosted the Noosa Festival of Water at the Noosa Botanic Gardens where Lake Macdonald provides a stunning backdrop for the event. The Festival is an entertaining and educational family friendly event, which aims to increase awareness

of the unique ecological and environmental attributes which help to make Noosa such a special place to live. The Festival provides opportunities and information for families and individuals so they can play their part in conserving and protecting the environment, even in their own back yard or rural property.

The magnificent Grecian style Amphitheatre on the shores of Lake Macdonald will showcase a fantastic program of entertainment throughout the day, featuring Lyndon Davis with the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers, the incredible musical talent of Jasmin and Amy Thompson of Phenix, and Festival favourite Geckoes Wildlife’s Martin Fingland with his collection of furry, feathered and slithery native wildlife. In the afternoon, the Famous Jimmies, a local five piece band of highly experienced musicians, will delight the audience with their traditional, toe tapping Irish music featuring a range of instruments from the mandolin to the Uillean pipes. You can also catch Jampot – a group of young local musicians from the Noosa Hinterland, with a set they describe as acoustic punk, country funk and conscientious rock. James Batchler’s impressive vocals lead the group through a repertoire of original songs. This upcoming young band is definitely going places and is a must see! Noosa Festival of Water welcomes the Empress of Weavery, Renee Bahloo, who will be providing free instruction on how to weave with native and introduced fibres – most notably the dreaded Cat’s Claw Creeper vine, an introduced species from South America which has rapidly colonised Australia bushland destroying rainforest and riparian habitat. If you would like to learn more about Cat’s Claw and be involved in collecting the vine for weaving at the Festival, please get in touch with the MRCCC. There’s also an opportunity to tour the Gardens with the Friends of the Botanic Gardens. Two free tours providing information about the

history of the Gardens and species planted will depart from their propagation house near the Gardens’ exit at 11.30 am and 1.15 pm. The MRCCC are offering free water testing for residents wanting their creek, dam or bore water sample tested for agricultural or horticultural suitability. Noosa Landcare will be giving out two free trees to Noosa residents with a current rate notice. The Noosa Community Biosphere group will be selling heavily discounted stainless steel water bottles which can be filled at Unitywater’s Back to Tap refill station, reinforcing the Festival’s move away from the sale and use of plastic water bottles. Sunshine and Cooloola Water Testing will be offering residents sample bottles for testing of private water supplies (tanks and bores) for bacteria, ecoli, pathogens and chemistry. As well as Snake and Reptile shows throughout the day, there will be a diverse offering of community groups providing information and displays. Children and their parents can learn about the local environment in the Creative Kids marquee where the Noosa Biosphere Association are hosting activities focussed on caring for our local land and water. The Festival also offers free face painting, and a selection of food and drink vendors including options for vegetarians and vegans. The MRCCC hosts this free annual event with support from Noosa Council, Unitywater, the Burnett Mary Regional Group and Queensland Water and Landcare. The Festival is also supported by the staff at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, Noosa Landcare, and hundreds of volunteers dedicated to caring for our natural environment.

Council awarded for collaboration in protecting local fauna Council’s collaborative efforts to protect an important wildlife corridor in Noosa have been recognised with an excellence award. At the recent 2019 Local Government Management Association (Qld) Awards for Excellence, Council received the “Excellence in Collaboration Award” for successfully bringing together a diversity of stakeholders on the Yurol-Ringtail State Forests Conservation Project. Council collaborated with the State Government, local environment group Noosa Parks Association, and HQ Plantations to progress the reafforestation and transfer of 2,400 hectares of State Forest into National Park. The outcome will create an important wildlife corridor that will benefit not only koalas, but many threatened and endangered species. Last November, Council, the State Government and Noosa Parks Association signed an agreement to jointly fund a $3.5M investment needed to buy-out license areas managed by HQ Plantations. Once plantation timber is removed, the areas can be restored to a natural habitat.

Mayor Tony Wellington said the award acknowledges the tireless efforts of our Council team, particularly CEO Brett de Chastel. “Brett put in an incredible amount of effort stitching this extremely complex deal together. He spent many a weekend working on it.” Other staffers worth noting include Council’s Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne, former Executive Officer Narelle Reid, and former Governance Advisor Paul Bright. “This project is a great example of what can be achieved when governments, community and business work together for a common goal,” the Mayor said. The LGMA Queensland Excellence Awards celebrates the professionalism of local government and inspires people to even greater levels of excellence in leadership and management across Queensland councils. The Collaboration Award recognises genuine and effective collaboration with partners, resulting in better outcomes for councils and their communities.

To infinity and beyond! High-tech, high-fives are happening everywhere at Cooroy State School. The students of 6A took time to thank one of their biggest supporters as they showed off their Infinity laptops this week. The Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank partners with Cooroy State School to provide the laptops to enhance students use of technology. In collaboration with the School’s P&C and the school itself, each student from years 36 are provided with the Infinity Laptops that are used within each classroom to support students with technology integrated learning. Some of the students pictured in Mrs. Mc Adam’s Year 6 class this week were the first students to have access to these computers back when they were in Year 4 (2017), and have been utilising these devices in their learning for the last three years. Cooroy State School has been supported by the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank for the past 10 years in a variety of learning programs and the partnership couldn’t be stronger. Each Windows 10 laptop has 64GB, 2GB of RAM, dual band Wi-Fi, its own on-board camera, a 10hour battery and many other features. School prin-

Simone Flavelle from Cooroy Community Bank branch (centre) is joined by Mrs. Betty McAdam and the students of 6A with their Infinity laptops this week cipal, Richard Barrie says the support of Bendigo Bank enabled the expansion of this program and will soon become invaluable for more students at Cooroy State School. “The Infinity laptop program is an ideal way to captivate young minds and stimulate their critical thinking. Students learn not only how to use technology, but also how-to prob-

lem solve if necessary. The students from 6A are so excited and we’re privileged to be able to deliver the program right here in Cooroy. It’s a great initiative that sets us apart,” Mr. Barrie said. On hand to see the laptops in use was Simone Flavelle, the manager of the Cooroy Community Branch. She shared how impressed she was at how

the school acts strategically on behalf of its students. “Our branch continues to grow with Cooroy State School and its great initiatives. We’ve been supporting the school for many years, and to have the opportunity to be here with the kids and see what the Infinity laptops mean to them is fantastic. All this is possible because of the lo-

cals who choose to bank with us. It’s that simple,” Simone said. Anyone wanting to know more information about the Infinity laptops can contact Cooroy State School on 5472 2100. For those wanting to make a difference to their community just by where they choose to bank should call Simone and the team on 5447 7131.

Pomona will be bikers’ heaven this month Pomona will be a biker’s heaven on Sunday 30 June when more than 120 motor cyclists take part on the 12th annual King of the Mountain Poker Run race, a major fundraiser for the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club. The event attracts many more people to town to admire the workmanship and workings of the bikes themselves. Organiser, Peter Cusack predicts a wonderful show that gets bigger and better each year. “We are so happy with the response from riders across the coast. Last year saw a lovely crisp sunny day with 100 plus bikers gathering at Stan Topper Park to enjoy a relaxing motorcycle ride through the picturesque countryside of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.” Registrations for the event start from

7.30am at Stan Topper Park, where free tea and coffee is available and breakfast is for sale. The ride starts with a roar at 9am, finishing at the Pomona Bowls Club, where prizes will be awarded. There will be a sausage sizzle. Throughout the day, homemade ‘smoko’ will be available at the various staging points in the race. Entry costs $20 per rider (poker hand) plus $10 per pillion (non poker hand). For pre-registration information please phone Peter Cusack on 0417 756 876 or Heather Manders 041 111 4077. How it works: Organisers have a route mapped out with scheduled stops. At every stop, each rider is given a card and at the end of the ride the person with the best poker hand wins a prize.

Expect to see a wide variety of motor bikes in Pomona later this month for the King of the Mountain Poker Run.

On June 6, we celebrated Queensland Day right across this great state. In Noosa, a deserving bunch of volunteers were honoured at the Noosa Electorate Queensland Day Awards at The J. A total of 42 people, from a broad range of community and business sectors including community associations, professional services, sporting clubs, regional events and local initiatives, received a Queensland Day medallion and certificate of appreciation. Since its inception four years ago, one of the awards major sponsors has been Bendigo Bank. Cooroy and Pomona branch’s Simone Flavelle and Tewantin Noosa branch manager, Linda Oliver joined the celebration, and Simone said partnering MP Sandy Bolton’s awards continues to be an easy decision.

Cooroy recipients of the 2019 Noosa Qld Day Awards (l-r) Shaun Walsh, David Lafferty, Tom Macnamara, MP Sandy Bolton, the Cooroy Rag’s own President Wayne Schrader and our VP Stephen Hilditch and Kerrie Bryant-Adams

Other local recipients (not pictured) include:

Shaun Walsh - Shaun was instrumental in developing the Design for Living Plan for the Lower Mill Site in Cooroy. He did all the work – drawings, presentations, plans as well as the submissions to Council and gave it to the Lower Mill Board and Council for them to implement. It was a working model for the entire site before the Cooroy Library was built. His life took him to Brisbane and while working there and living in Cooran, he came up with the idea for the Great Noosa Trail Walk and drove that project to its success - presiding over all aspects of the project and was the lead guide. Shaun gave freely of his professional time and, contributed an immense amount of work to both of these large projects.

Brian Lawson - Pomona Community House Rose Berry - Majestic Theatre Vince Scheenhouwer Majestic Theatre Ron West - Majestic Theatre Don Clarke - Majestic Theatre John Brooks - Majestic Theatre Nathanael Ford Pomona & District War Memorial Jeanette Alfredson Noosa Shire Museum

David Lafferty - David has volunteered for the Cooroy community for many years. Kerrie Bryant-Adams - Kerrie is the glue that holds the Australian Body Art Festival together. She coordinates volunteers, organises all the details and after countless hours of preparation and late nights rolls up her sleeves and does whatever is needed at the event. This year, that involved lugging around 40 km ground mats to protect Cooroy’s APEX Park and dealing with all the adversity that a wet event brings.

Stephen Hilditch - Stephen is a community advocate and supports our community in the form of MC’ing charity and community events, support letters for issues and causes. He is currently the President of Pomona and District Meals on Wheels as well as working in the kitchen and delivery of meals to clients. Stephen is also the Vice President of the Cooroy Rag Management team. He has also led many community action groups. Amongst many other commitments Stephen was the founding member of Heart of Pomona committee and he is the Community Chaplin providing his services to the community members for weddings, funerals and memorial services. Stephen is a lay preacher with a local church and conducted the first Armistice Day service at the memorial rotunda in over 30 years and took the Anzac Day service at Kin Kin.

Wayne Schrader - Wayne is the President of the not for profit community newspaper, The Cooroy Rag. He has volunteered for the Cooroy community for decades with a huge number of organisations and events from primary schools to scouts and events like Christmas in Cooroy and Cooroy Fusion. Wayne always finds time to help out his community and the hinterland is very thankful.

Tom Macnamara - Tom has been with Cooroy Camphor Laurel for over six years and has been treasurer for the last five years. He is a well-respected committee member and member of the Cooroy community. Alongside Tom’s role as treasurer, he also organises volunteers for the Christmas and Easter parking in Noosa. Tom is a worthy recipient of this Queensland Day Award.

In my last column, I wrote about THAT time of year again – getting prepared to complete your annual tax return. I spoke of group certificates, interest earned from shares and not forgetting claiming your bank fees. Now is a good time to see you accountant and financial planner to see what affect the latest federal budget changes will have on your tax situation. Income protection insurance is one deduction you need to include. You may be direct debiting this, so your insurance company should send you a statement outlining your payment. Bank fees can be claimed. Source them from your bank account statements or your bank directly. Uniforms costs associated with your work may be relevant. These include purchasing of new uniforms and the laundering or dry cleaning of them. What about any study or training associated with your work throughout the year? Costs associated with this may be relevant. Do you use your car for work? Running costs may need to be included. Investments loans over assets such as property or shares can have interest and costs included as possible deductions. Additionally, running costs associated with the property may also be included. Receipts or bank statements should outline this information. This list has certainly not exhausted all possible income and claims, they are just a few of the main ones you may

need to think about. Your accountant is always a good source of information. Your bank will also be able to assist you with statements and information relating to your accounts and loans. Some banks, like ours will offer health cover and may have even had incentives if you joined up before the end of the financial year. What about superannuation and the co-contribution the federal government is offering? Is this applicable to you and have you made the appropriate contributions for the year? Lastly, what about the great rebates the federal government is offering small businesses? Have you looked into these to see if your business can benefit? Your accountant can offer further information on this rebate and your local bank manager can provide options for financing business items. If you would like to know more about how your Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches can help with you, your family and your business with a full range of banking services including equipment finance, superannuation, insurance or business finance, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

They decided to call

the club Impact Boxing because it was always the intention to make an impact on young lives. Since then, literally hundreds of kids have passed through the gym and the impact has been enormous. Many of the kids have come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, broken families, and families affected by addiction. Mark also works closely with school guidance counsellors and the police, who often funnel troubled kids in his direction. “The gym has got a real good family feel to it,” says Mark. “Everyone is made to feel like family – to be polite and show respect. We have a sign saying, ‘Please leave your ego at the door!’” Over the years, Mark has also apprenticed a lot of these kids through his business, giving them a trade and some work experience. They’ve even had a number of kids staying in their home over the years. “They benefit from being part of a family unit,” says Mark. “And most have responded really well to it – helping around the house, keeping their rooms clean...” Mark remembers one girl

in particular who was referred to him. She was severely depressed to the point of feeling suicidal. She ended up coming to the gym twice a week for the next 6 months and the change in her was remarkable. “She just needed someone she could talk to,” says Mark. “Often we’d just talk and not even box.” A number of special needs kids (autism, Asperger’s) have also passed through the gym. “Sometimes these kids struggle to express themselves and this turns to anger,” says Mark. “Boxing teaches self-discipline and helps them deal with anger and frustration.” Today, the gym has become the most successful amateur boxing club in Australia, with more Australian champions and international successes than any other gym in the country. These include a number of rising stars such as Taylah Robertson who just won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. Taylah started at Mark’s gym when she was 11 or 12 and is now a real contender for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Another Olympic hopeful is 19-

year-old Ella Boot who won a gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas last year and a bronze medal at the World Youth Championships in India. These girls (and others from the gym) have been fighting all over the world – Poland, Serbia, Spain – and will next be going to the World Championships in Russia which is one of the main selection events for the Olympics. “All out of this backyard gym,” says Mark with a smile. “I’ve been blessed with a great bunch of kids.” Considering that Mark travels around Australia and the world with these kids and only has “a tin for donations” at the club, it’s safe to say that these youngsters are pretty blessed as well! Mark runs ladies’ boxercise workouts on Tuesday & Thursday nights and Pee Wee Boxing (ages 3 to 12) on Mondays & Fridays (4.30 to 5.30pm). Tel: 0403 264 048.

Local teacher designs indigenous Origin jersey Gregg Dreise is a quiet achiever. A descendant of the Kamilaroi tribe, from south-west Queensland and north-west New South Wales, Gregg was born and raised in St George, Queensland before moving to Cooroy with his parents, Rod and Lyla, during his high school years. Currently teaching at Federal State School, Gregg is also an accomplished and internationally-acclaimed artist, illustrator and author. He is also the designer of the 2019 Queensland Maroons State of Origin Indigenous Jersey. “I am fortunate to get all kinds of jobs to expand my knowledge and skills. To be able to design the Queensland Maroons State of Origin Indigenous Jersey has been a fantastic experience. “The jersey design is called 17 Boomerangs. There is a boomerang for each of the players. Just like ‘boomerangs’, our players are all unique ‘weapons’ ready to bring the trophy ‘back’ to Queensland – where it belongs. The jersey design also contains Aboriginal Dreaming Circles to represent every person’s part in the pride of our team. From the Coach, to the players (even our Noosa local Moses Mbye), to the fans, all the way down to those young children dreaming of one day playing for our great state,” says Gregg. “I was fortunate to go to the Season Launch after the team was selected. Getting the VIP treatment has been great, meeting the players and being invited to their training sessions has been wonderful. All of the players were presented with my jersey with their names on the back and their player number on the front. Luckily, I have had several jerseys signed by the players for my family and myself. “Going to the first game in Brisbane was also a Monday-Friday wonderful opportunity. We were down in the first 9.00am-5.00pm half, but like those boomerangs – we came back Saturday and won.” The jersey also has the Torres Strait Islander 8.00am-12noon artwork added by Travis Bond. His design adds a Dhari – a traditional Torres Strait Island Headdress – and a shark tooth necklace. Queensland

Hi, my name is Elsie and I am going to share my experience of kindness. Kindness is all around you but sometimes you don’t feel it. If you believe and pay attention you will notice it. Kindness doesn’t always have to be a big act of kindness, it can be big or small. We can show kindness towards friends, family, people you meet in the community and animals. On my birthday last year I was at IGA with my Mum and sister. My Mum mentioned to the man in front of us at the checkout it was my birthday. When his order was finished he turned around and gave me and my sister a chocolate, saying Happy Birthday! It was a very kind thing for him to do.

Seven years ago at the Majestic Theatre, Ron West’s beloved theatre organ was damaged beyond repair when floodwaters rose above the floorboards. An SOS call went out to fellow organ enthusiast John Brooks, who summoned the expertise of Don Clark to assist him in assessing the damage. They both agreed it was a lost cause, however Don recalled there was a similar organ in Brisbane that may be looking for a new home. Every (rain) cloud has a silver lining, and in this case, it was a rare, 1937 Compton Theatre Organ owned by the Linett family, who were keen to see its complex restoration completed before being permanently placed in a special venue such as the Majestic Theatre. It was a huge job to dismantle the many parts of the organ and bring it to the Sunshine Coast where it would undergo a mammoth restoration of every component. For over six years, John and Don worked tirelessly rebuilding and restoring it to its former glory, sourcing parts

from all around the country to ensure its authenticity. In a labour of love, every part was stripped down and rebuilt with tender loving care by these two dedicated volunteers and their skilled helpers. Finally, the restoration is complete and The Majestic Theatre will be celebrating it’s rejuvenation in style on 6 July. The legendary Ron West will be playing his favourites, followed by a concert by renowned Brisbane theatre organist David Bailey. Local pianists James Warner and Chris Rose will be tickling the ivories while complimentary afternoon tea is served. In true Majestic style, David will perform to a short silent film as a tribute to the local landmark – the world’s longest running authentic silent movie theatre. The event is a must-see for all music lovers and theatre organ enthusiasts. Book early as limited tickets are available. Adults $25, Concession $20, Students under 12 yrs $5. Doors and bar open 1.30pm. The concert will begin at 2pm. For more information or to purchase tickets visit: themajestictheatre.com.au

Bendigo Bank's Jo Winter with the winners from Pomona State school's Under 8's Day colouring in competition If a picture paints a thousand words, then there are millions of reasons to celebrate the efforts of Pomona State School students. At the Under 8’s Day held at the school on May 24, the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank put together the a colouring-in competition for students under eight. Lots of entries were received and today the winners were presented with their Bendigo Bank prize packs. Pomona Community Bank branch’s Jo Winter said she and the other branch staff members were blown away by the quality of the entries. “Not only were we happy to receive so many entries, but we had to be reminded at the age of these talented students. The entries were all put up right around the walls of our branch and it really brightened things up,” Jo said. The Under 8’s event was held to celebrate all that’s great about being under the age of eight. The educational and fun-filled morning was one part of celebrations that took place around Queensland. It was all part of the 63rd year of Under 8’s Week celebrating the culture and diversity in our community.

‘Making a dynasty’ Runners Profile - Leslie Webb

lenge twice here in Pomona and also competed in the New Zealand race in Kawerau. What is it about these races that makes you get out of bed in the morning to tackle the challenge?

King of the Mountain has given me so much more than just that urge to get out there and train to run the best I can, it has given me some of the best friends who I see outside of race day, train with and compete in other events with. Being a teacher in Pomona, it really is such a special event to our community and I really appreciate all the work that goes on in the back ground organising the event. But most of all, when I started running KOM, I really wanted my own kids to be proud of me, run with me and now they are adults and living their own lives, the biggest gift KOM has given to me, is the opportunity to inspire my students and local kids to come and give this trail/mountain running a crack. The Prince and Princess race is my passion for young runners.

Leslie Webb has had the honour of winning the Queen of the Mountain twice in the Bendigo Bank Int. Mountain Challenge. She represented Pomona in New Zealand’s sister race in Kawerau. She’s also a Pomona local and knows the mountain race like the back of her hand. Now she’s tackling a new challenge, passing on her knowledge to train future champions of the mountain. You’ve been an exceptional runner, having won the Bendigo Bank Int. Mountain Chal-

When you ventured to Kawerau, you saw junior runners come through the ranks in their prince and princess race. Guys like Daniel Jones and Shay Williamson. Did that inspire you do something more here, being a local resident of Pomona, for the prince and princess race here?

So the first year I won the trip to New Zealand, Kawerau King of the Mountain, I had no idea there was a Prince and Princess race. We get taken to the local school each visit on the Friday before Saturday race day, and it just blows your mind how the kids treat you. It is so special. But the way those kids all were so connected to their mountain, the cultural ties just moved me. I watched them race before my race and I just had to bring that vision to have our own

How do you prepare the kids both physically and mentally being the organiser and trainer for this race? Has being a successful runner yourself made you think more about how you pass on your wisdom to the kids?

Being a teacher, I work with young people so it is really familiar being with them. When I run with them it really does change in that we share what’s going on either in the actual landscape but also what they are experiencing physically. Like I always say to them, I am constantly learning, watching other elite runners, my training partners sharing how we approach the run or training tips to improve our strength. Yes I have had some success and I pass on as much as I think will help them, but honestly mountain running is a real special event. It’s so challenging, and the kids really find the climb a challenge. Teaching them to focus on their strengths such as downhill, and the flat parts and work out where they can make ground is always a focus. Runners club has been so successful this year. Every Thursday we train, and I really talk about the mental approach to being on that mountain, how to connect with what you are doing in that moment. What’s your hope for the future of the Prince and Princess race? Do you see it being a starting point for future great Australian trail runners. Have you seen any juniors come through the race and go on to be successful in the official race? Are you able to predict or ‘talent scout’ these juniors from an early age?

Prince and Princess race back with me. To hear the stories of past Prince’s such as Shay, Daniel who go on to win and become legends in the adult race just made me want our young runners to have a culture of youth to adult competing in KOM. I’ve navigated the course for the Prince and Princess race, and it’s by means no easy task. The kids are actually heading up the climb towards Pomona and face quite a tricky decent coming down.

POMONA

My hope, my vision for the Prince and Princess race, is that kids from all over the coast come to give our mountain a go. That our Prince’s and Princess’ come up into the main race. That we speak of the legends that they are coming from junior into senior and becoming King like Shay and Daniel in New Zealand. And most of all that one day the race is held on the main event day. That these kids get to run through an epic crowd hearing the cheers for them. As we get older and run in differing categories, do you still have that competitive streak as a runner? Are there any ‘battles’ against certain runners that you are looking forward to or are you more focused on training the juniors?

Do I still have a competitive streak? Yes every day I work hard, not to win, that time has passed for me, but to achieve that time I set myself, and to know I had the courage to line up with amazing people who run that mountain race for charity, for physical goals, to make their kids or partner proud or just to be involved in such a brilliant community event. Leslie’s best time at Pomona is a 31.19 in 2016. The Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge is a project of Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. The race takes place this year on Sunday July 28th. Zinc Prince & Princess race is on Saturday the 27 July.

health Do you suffer from Vestibular Dysfunction Disorder?

COOROY RAG

The role of the vestibular system is to sense self motion, orientate us to vertical, stabilize the head and control our center of mass. People with vestibular dysfunction can present with dizziness, visual and balance disturbances, reduced mobility and anxiety. They may have reduced independence and decreased confidence to participate in social activities and experience social isolation. Dizziness may be due to faulty information being received from the vestibular system or processing of this information within the central nervous system. The term dizziness can refer to symptoms of vertigo, light headedness, disorientation or a

sense of imbalance. Over 1/3 of Australians aged over 50 report dizziness. Well known conditions associated with vestibular dysfunction include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, Meniere’s disease stroke, head injuries, tumors and ageing. Vestibular rehabilitation may address the more immediate causes of dizziness (for example, by using head positioning maneuvers in the case of BPPV) but also seeks to reduce the longer term consequences of living with dizziness such as decreased activity participation, deconditioning and falls. It involves specific exercise therapy which may target: head and eye movements; balance; or repeated exposure to provocative movements to desensitize the individual to movement. It also includes education and a review of the impacts of dizziness on an individual’s quality of life. It improves functional recovery and helps to develop coping strategies to improve overall emotional state, even for those patients whose dizziness may not fully resolve. health A safe car is nothing without safe vision

COOROY RAG

As technology makes cars increasingly safer, our local optometrists at optometry@cooroy are raising awareness of the critical role vision plays in safety. “Drivers have become very focused on safety; it’s a must-have. Most are concerned about their car’s abilities, but don’t think about the major influential factor in crashes: human error. If the person operating a safe car can’t see clearly, then safety features may be inconsequential,” says optometrist Jenny Currie. “We know that vision is the most important sense for making decisions on the road and that uncorrected vision is a contributor to crash risk. Road safety starts with good vision, and that means seeing well at all distances, in all conditions.” She adds “Vision is responsible for around 90% of the information used when driving; even a small change in vision is cause for concern.” But how do you know if you might be at risk? Ask yourself if you experience any of the following: Trouble recognising details on road signs or number plates; Difficulty judging the distance of oncoming vehicles, particularly at night; Trouble seeing clearly in changing light conditions, e.g. from day to dusk, dusk to night; Bothered by the glare of oncoming headlights; Need to move your head

to see in side mirrors or read your dashboard clearly; Reluctance to drive at night or in unfamiliar environments; Uncertainty and lack of confidence behind the wheel? Driving and modern-day living go hand in hand. Australians are spending more time in their cars commuting and traffic is ever-increasing. Poor vision is a contributor to road accidents and yet it’s a risk every driver can easily reduce by following the ‘Check Your Vision Golden Rule’: Get your vision checked regularly by an optometrist; Protect your eyes; Wear your glasses behind the wheel. A 360 degree eye consultation with optometry@cooroy includes a holistic and extensive eye examination plus advice on health, diet and lifestyle. Optometrists have more options and technologies than ever before to help you stay safe on the road including: Vision correction, progressive lenses, anti-reflective coating and polarised sunglasses. optometry@cooroy has been operating in Cooroy for more than ten years. The team has decades of experience and is passionate about delivering the best possible eye care to the community. optometry@cooroy be contacted on 5442 5555 and is located at 62 Maple Street.

Get serious about your medicines We all take medicines, but all too often we take their seriousness for granted. Remember to: Ask your health professional as many questions as you need about your medicines/tests; Know and understand what is a medicine - remember herbs, vitamins and supplements, even if bought from a supermarket, will have effects on your body; Know the active ingredients of your medicines - there are so many brands, types, shapes, sizes and colours out there - ensure you know what the important part is, not just your preferred brand; Always read and follow instructions from your pharmacist or doctor carefully. Find out if your medicines are safe while

you are pregnant/breastfeeding; Ensure you have tactics in place to help you remember your medicines, how much to take, and when to take it; Know the correct storage needs for your medicines; Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of unwanted/unused medicines correctly; Keep track of your medicines. You can keep a list in your wallet, or even use the new MedicineWise smartphone app. “MedicineWise: Manage Medicine” – available free for apple and android. Cooroy Gymnast wins National Titles Two gymnast from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club were selected to compete at the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne. Dean Chandler and Finlay Jones have been training under head coach Jeff Ferrer, working hard in preparation for the event. Each gymnast has their own preferred apparatus with Dean specialising on pommel and vault and Finlay focusing on rings, parallel bars and the all around award. The duo travelled with the Queensland team to the event which featured almost 1500 of Australia’s best gymnasts over the six gymnastics disciplines, including Mens and Womens Artistic Gymnastics, Trampoline, Acrobatics and Aerobics. The eight member, level 8 Queensland squad featured many of the victorious level 7 squad from the 2018 national event. The team, although from five different clubs have become close and highly competitive at the national level. The first day of competition over the six apparatus was for the team title and the first half of the accrued all around award. It was a tough first day for the Cooroy competitors who had falls on apparatus. Both gymnasts fell twice on pommel and Finlay falling again on one of his best events the parallel bars. At the end of the first day of competition, there were four Queenslanders in the top ten all around with gymnasts placing well on apparatus. The Queensland team was victorious in the event on the first day with the best three scores from the team on each apparatus counting. Taking full point deductions for falls on the first day the Cooroy boys all around score was below their expectations, with Dean 21st and Finlay 10th after the first day of all around, 2.4 points behind the leader. The

Finlay Jones: 1st All Around, 1st Rings, 2nd Parallel Bars, 3rd Pommel

Dean Chandler 4th Pommel

second day would offer the gymnasts a chance to come back and win awards on apparatus in the finals and fight for a better position in the all around. After a lay day and some time for training at the venue, day two of competition started more positively for the boys. Starting on rings the boys put in a solid day of competition with Finlay putting in a rings routine that couldn’t be matched. Both boys impressed, improving scores over the previous days event and lifting on almost all apparatus. Finlay put in a solid performance on

parallel bars winning silver. Dean had an almost flawless pommel routine before clipping his feet near the end finishing 4th and costing him a top podium finish. Finlay improved his pommel by staying on to finish 3rd. As the dust settled on the days competition Dean had improved his first day score by 2.2 points. Dean lifted his all around position to 18th place but remarkably Finlay retuned to form posting a 73.2 improving 5.2 points from the first day to win the all round title.

Our club is noted for the support it receives from its mem(L-R): Mandy Webb, Mary Miller, Terri Cairns (Captain), bers and this was evident on Doone Flanagan. the day. Our sponsors of the main trophies were Cooroy LiveLife Pharmacy and Adina Watches which were presented to the Nett winners: Mandy Webb (Noosa), Doone Flanagan (Cooroy) and Mary Miller (Cooroy). Club trophies wen to Gross Winners Bronwyn Woolbank (Cooroy), Juliet Hall (Cooroy), and Yvonne Rayner (Nambour).
