Family Festival Fun

COOROY’S Lake Macdonald and the Noosa Botanic Gardens provide a stunning backdrop for the Noosa Festival of Water from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday 25th June 2017 and there really is something for everyone to enjoy. The calm waters of Lake Macdonald are the perfect place to teach kids how to fish, kayak and standup paddleboard so throw in the boardies and a towel. Children and their parents can also learn about the local environment in the Creative Kids marquee with Seqwater, Unitywater and local artists running activities focussed on caring for the land and water of the Noosa Biosphere. For keen anglers, there’s a catch and release Bass fishing competition at Mary River Cod Park where young and old will use all their skills to land a big one with some great prizes of fishing gear for the winners. The Festival offers a rare opportunity to visit the Gerry Cook Hatchery and learn about the important work being undertaken to restore wild populations of the Mary River cod, one of Australia’s most endangered freshwater fish which was once a top order predator in the Six Mile Creek system and the Mary River Catchment. Throughout the day, a free boat trip will take people across the Lake from the Botanic Gardens to Mary River Cod Park hatchery and back. The magnificent Grecian style Amphitheatre will showcase a swag of fantastic local entertainment throughout the day, featuring Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers, Andrea Kirwin, the incredible musical talent of Phenix, the Moonsets, up and coming artists from Gympie’s Australian Institute of Country Music and Festival favourite Geckoes Wildlife’s Martin Fingland with his collection of furry, feathered and slithery native wildlife. This year’s Amphitheatre program will also feature the launch of the Boomerang Alliance Plastic Free Noosa Campaign. Noosa Landcare will be giving out two free trees to Noosa residents with a current rate notice, the

Mary River Catchment Committee (MRCCC) are offering free water testing for residents wanting their creek, dam or bore water sample tested and the Noosa Community Biosphere group will be offering heavily discounted stainless steel water bottles which can be filled at Unitywater’s Back to Tap refill station at the Festival, reinforcing the Festival’s move away from the sale of plastic water bottles. As well as Snake and Reptile shows throughout the day, there will be a diverse offering of community groups providing information and displays, along with kids face painting, a jumping castle and a selection of food and drink vendors. A courtesy bus will operate on the day to bring people to the Festival from the parking areas along Lake Macdonald Drive. Pick up a copy of the Festival program and lodge your feedback form at the Festival to be in the running for a fantastic accommodation package at Peppers Resort Noosa, courtesy of Tourism Noosa. The MRCCC hosts this free annual event with support from Noosa Council, Seqwater, Unitywater, the Cooroy Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank, Hooked on Angling and Outdoors in Tewantin and the Burnett Mary Regional Group. Our aim is to help locals and visitors to our region learn about how to protect and care for the unique ecological and environmental attributes which help to make Noosa such a special place to live. The Festival is also supported by Noosa Landcare, the staff at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and hundreds of volunteers dedicated to caring for our natural environment. To register for the Fishing Competition or for more information about the Noosa Festival of Water, check out the Facebook page, visit the website at www.noosafestivalofwater.org or call the MRCCC on 07 5482 4766.

Marlene Strudwick, retiring train driver Ron Strudwick and Michael Fayne at the presentation. LOCAL man, Ron Strudwick, has finally called it a day after driving the train at the Ginger Factory for more than 9 years. Particular about safety and a favourite with the children, Ron will be sadly missed at this popular tourist venue. His close circle of friends celebrated his retirement with a full moon fire circle at Pomona where they presented him

with a gold fob watch and a certificate of appreciation. Ron still has plenty to fill his days. He is the President of the Probus Club of Cooroy and volunteers at the Noosa Hospital and at the Parkyn Hut Historical Information Centre in Tewantin, taking a leadership role in both. The world needs more people like Ron Strudwick.

POMONA

Bendigo Bank commits, Pomona celebrates WHILE other banks continue to close down their branches in regional Australia, Pomona has celebrated Bendigo Bank’s long term commitment to the town. More than 80 community group representatives celebrated the expansion of Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank last Wednesday night, and they were joined by Mayor Tony Wellington, Glen Elmes MP and State Community Manager, Kate Wakeling. Pomona now has a Community Bank® branch in its own right, joining more than 315 others in the Bendigo Bank network, Australia-wide. Senior Branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the Pomona Community Bank® branch will continue to fill a great local need as the town’s only banking service, but it’s also bringing a sense of unity to Pomona. “I think any town able to provide residents, traders and community groups with an alternative, locallyowned banking option is a great thing in today’s financial climate,” Mr. Edwards said. “Bendigo Bank’s commitment to Noosa through its Cooroy and Tewantin Community Bank® branches has already seen more than $1.5 million given back to our community and we’re just getting started. Our

3.00pm. As the branch continues to grow, so too will its opening hours. Mr. Edwards added the message is simple - the more support the Pomona branch receives, the more support can be given to our community. “Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money can go back into the community. As one of Pomona branch’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” he concluded. If you have any questions regarding the Pomona Community Bank® branch, call 5485 1786 during opening hours or the Cooroy Community Bank® branch on 5447 7131 for further information.

SCCFSL chairman, Rick Cooper (centre) is joined by staff and fellow board members at the Pomona Community Bank branch launch Pomona branch offers a full range of banking services - transaction and lending facilities, home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. There’s also opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments, and having its own ATM is also a real plus for locals,” he said. Local word of mouth has led to strong support of the branch, already enjoying more than $16 million in footings. There also seems to be a lot of excitement about Pomona having a real say in its own financial future. Our Customer Relationship Manager, Hannah Dennis and her team of Meredith and Abby are ready to assist locals with all their bank-

ing needs. “We’re delighted to be able to deliver what the Pomona community asked for and want this purpose-built expansion to grow from strength to strength. It’s already been a great addition to the town and we want to continue our positive effect in the

Noosa hinterland by putting our profits straight back into our community,” Mr. Edwards added. Located at 3 Station Street, the branch services Pomona and the hinterland three days a week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am -

THE renovation of Cooroy’s Memorial Hall will begin soon. On Friday last week the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association Inc (CMHA) signed an agreement with Noosa Council, allowing the Association to commence work on the hall. CMHA president Paul Kluck said that once the Association’s building application was lodged and approved, renovations could begin. CMHA has appointed local builder Harry Kirk as the principal contractor to carry out improvements to the hall, including improvements to the hall’s toilets and kitchen areas. The agreement with Council provides up to $192,000 from the Heritage Levy to fund the renovations, with the CMHA to provide an equivalent amount in cash, resources and in-kind services. Mr Kluck said that the CMHA hoped that the renovation of the hall could be completed by Christmas this year. “In the meantime, the community will see many fundraising ventures conducted to raise the necessary funds,” he said. “We welcome the involvement of all members of the community in the effort to re-open our hall.” Mayor Tony Wellington said the signing of the Deed of Agreement was an important step toward seeing the hall reopen. “I commend the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association members for their enthusiasm and their commitment to seeing the hall restored,” the Mayor said.

Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch (centre, behind Dewey the robot), meets with: (L-R) Darrell Edwards, RDA Sunshine Coast; Tracey King, Noosa Council/Noosa Library Service; Chris Boden, Create Noosa; Kerri Contini, Noosa Council/Noosa Library Service; Jeff Ayton, Osler Technologies; Stuart Clout, thedocyard; Ray Guy, Alkira; Ben Duncan, Atmail LEEANNE Enoch, State Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business, took the time to meet Dewey, the Council’s Library Service Robot, while in town this week. As part of her visit to announce $500,000 for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast from the State’s new innovation fund, the Minister toured Noosa’s hightech Cooroy Library, with its grassed roof and technology centre. She also met-with Noosa-based entrepreneurs. Last year, Cooroy Library was named one of the world’s coolest libraries. Noosa Library Service was the first public library in Australia to enlist the help of a NAO Humanoid robot to provide coding and computer programming training to residents. Council’s Economic Development Manager Anthony Dow said the local entrepreneurs who met with the Minister welcomed her comments about support for technology businesses. “Her comments about the potential for state governments to provide more opportunities for smaller, innovative businesses to compete for government contracts were certainly well received,” Mr Dow said. “The feedback from local businesses is

that sometimes the opportunity to work with a government agency, or at least to be given a chance to pitch for a big government contract, can do more for a business’s success than receiving a government grant. “The Minister was also open to suggestions that the State could play an important role in attracting talent to regional areas. This may be necessary to fill a gap in skills, which new technology businesses identify as essential to their growth. “Local business Alkira, which has designed a website navigation technology to make computing easier for the vision-impaired, certainly impressed the Minister with a demonstration of their product,” Mr Dow said. The Minister also met representatives from Peregian Beach-based email software developer Atmail, healthcare professional development company Osler Technology based at Noosa Junction, as well as thedocyard, which provides secure document technology and professional services to the legal sector. Representatives from both Innovate Noosa and Create Noosa, two recently formed organisations with a focus on innovation, also met with the Minister at Cooroy.

Butter Factory Friends Robyn Gill recently ran a two day masterclass workshop over consecutive Sundays on Nerikomi at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Nerikomi is a contemporary Japanese term where slabs of different clays or clays colored with stains or oxides, are stacked, folded, pressed into logs, sliced, and arranged to form a vessel. In this way, the numerous stacked layers appear as fine undulating lines embedded in a

surrounding colour in the finished vessel. Robyn is a master of this technique and 10 students went on this journey with her, in an attempt to produce beautiful multi-coloured bowls. A wonderful workshop, it was attended by potters/ceramic artists with varied depths of experience and even one novice who had never touched clay. All were quite happy with their bowls at the end of the masterclass and await their fired bowls to see

BFFs Buttr Factory Friends support the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) through raising funds to assist in developing the profile, programs and sustainability of the BFAC. Our interest in interest rates Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank WITH the Aussie dollar hovering around the US 0.75 cent mark for a while now, talk is never far away about interest rates and when they will rise. Of course the Reserve Bank has the final call on that, but if you have a loan it’s probably time to check your facility with your bank to see where your interest rate sits. If your loan is currently on a variable rate then you should have seen your rate automatically drop significantly in the last few years. A variable rate will move up or down generally in line with Reserve Bank announcements. With your rate at record lows for some time now, it gives you several advantages: 1 Your monthly/ fortnightly/ weekly payments will have been steady. With good planning, you can budget for any future increase. 2. You could leave your payments as they are. Your official repayment will have been constant so any extra payment you have arranged with your bank will be paid directly off your debt. In the long run, this should save you additional interest and possibly years off your time to repay your entire loan. Another alternative for a variable loan might be to monitor the fixed rates that your bank is offering as there are some attractive ones around. At some stage, you might choose to lock your loan in for a time on one of these rates. You may already have a loan that is currently on a fixed rate. Check to see what it is in comparison to interest rates your bank is currently offering. You might find that your fixed rate is sitting a little high. Talk to your bank about your options. Fixed rates may be able to be re-

leased, but usually for a cost. It may still save you in the long run to break your rate and change it to variable or take advantage of a lower fixed rate. At our Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches, we currently have our No Regrets Home Loan and Equipment Finance packages which may be of real interest to you. Everyone’s circumstances are different and other factors may also need to be considered. If you’d like to discuss your home loan, equipment finance or any other banking matter, please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly via geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the senior manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank located at 36 Maple Street, Cooroy and 3 Station Street, Pomona.

news What young people often don’t know about super

COOROY RAG

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* YOU may not know your super balance, but it’s probably a lot more than what’s in your everyday bank account. If you’re like 56% of young Australians, you probably couldn’t say exactly how much money you have in superannuation, but according to the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), what you’ve got in super may easily outweigh what you’ve got in your everyday bank account. We take a look at the research, released by ASFA in March this year, which also highlights that the majority of those under age 29 strongly support super as a good way to save for retirement, even though many underestimate the amount of money they’ll need after they finish working. How much the average young person has in super ASFA found around 25% of Australians aged 15 to 19 had a super account, as did approximately 75% of those aged 20 to 24. While average balances were not that large, ASFA

said they were rather substantial compared to what most young people had in their bank account. ASFA pointed to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which showed the average super balance for those aged 20 to 24 was around $5,000, with that figure escalating to more than $16,000 for 25 to 29-year-olds. What additional findings revealed Key points from the ASFA research showed: • More than 60% of young Australians have multiple super accounts, with 30% reporting trouble in finding their old accounts • Young people who have multiple accounts are potentially at risk of eroding their super savings because they’re paying multiple sets of fees and charges • Nearly 10% of Australians under 29 are checking their super balance daily, which is important as it’s likely to be one of the biggest investments they’ll ever have

• On average, young people expect they’ll need $625,000 to retire, while those aged 60 and over expect they’ll need a much bigger sum of around $1 million. Super tips for young people • If you earn more than $450 in a calendar month, your employer is required to make super contributions to a fund on your behalf at the rate of 9.5% of your earnings. • If you’re under 18, contributions are only payable if you work more than 30 hours a week. • If you are employed, you should check your payslip and your super account transaction records to make sure you are getting the contributions you are legally entitled to. • If you aren’t getting what you think you are owed, speak to your employer. The Australian Taxation Office can also help you with information and in recovering any unpaid contributions, with non-payment of super affecting about 690,000 Australians annually. What about insurance

inside super? Each super account you have will typically have a fixed administration charge of at least $100 a year and if you’ve taken out insurance through super, premiums will also be deducted from your balance. While more than 70% of Australian life insurance policies are held inside super - and it may be beneficial for you, depending on your circumstances—you should regularly review your preferences, as more than 25% of people under age 29 are unsure whether they have cover, let alone the right type. Where to go for help As you may be aware, super contribution rules and limits are set to change from 1 July 2017. While you mightn’t be able to put as much money into super due to these changes, the good news is there are still opportunities you could take advantage of if you act soon. While retirement might seem like a lifetime away, remember - the more informed you are about

super from a young age, the better off you may be down the track. MANY people are unaware that the Cooroy Community Kindergarten is built on land leased from Qld Rail. Originally the Kindy was only required to pay a peppercorn rent but after Qld Rail became privatised the rent increased very substantially. SOME Sunshine Coast artists are working industriously on their submissions in preparation for the upcoming Tall Trees Exhibition in the Noosa hinterland. The annual exhibition in Cooran aims to recognise, promote and bring together local artistic talent and provides a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale to patrons from near and afar. This year’s exhibition featuring over 70 local creatives has set a record for the number of artists participating in the exhibition which has established itself as a must see event in the local Arts calendar. For the first time, this year’s exhibition will take place at multiple venues in Cooran in a collaboration between local businesses and the community. The exhibition will stretch from one end of King Street to the other, inviting patrons to meander about as they enjoy the hinterland scenery and view the work of local artisans in various mediums in a variety of settings. Venues vary from The Vintage Junction, an eclectic coffee shop stocking vintage wares, to a new restaurant and bar aptly named Hinterland, and other social spaces such as HeArtspace. The private studios of three local Cooran artists, including a jeweller, will also open over the weekend to give those who visit a personal insight into the artist’s creative process and the surroundings from which they find inspiration. Other event inclusions designed to ignite crea-

tivity will feature interactive arts and music workshops utilising recycled materials, while a remedial massage by local Ayurveda therapist Danielle Gonsal will leave you feeling awakened as you continue to explore the exhibition. Exhibition organiser Mia Hacker says the high number of submissions this year reflects the Tall Trees Art Exhibition’s founding principle of ‘Art for all, by all’. “While the quality of work produced by local artists is certainly considered during its curation, the enduring appeal of our exhibition is our preference to feature a diversity of featured artists and mediums to inspire creativity in others in our community”, she said. The event’s opening night will occur on Friday night the 30th June at a ‘meet and greet’ with artists at the newly launched restaurant ‘Hinterland’ and all are encouraged to come along to meet them and learn more about their creative pursuits as experiential, emerging, part-time or experienced artists. Exhibition venue opening times will vary from 7am to 5pm over the 1-2 July weekend and between them will cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information about this year’s exhibition and venues visit www.talltreesart.com or see Tall Trees Art Exhibition on Facebook for more details. By Jacqueline Bazzo

Funnel Ant invasion hits Cooroy

MICHAEL SOBEY Commercial Lawyer

Exhibition attracts record number of artists

RECENTLY, many residents of Cooroy and the surrounding areas have found their lawns covered by unsightly cone-shaped mounds of dirt. One day you mow, the next day they’re back! Most people are probably aware that these are the work of funnel ants but it’s the question of how to effectively get rid of these lawn invaders that is perhaps not so straightforward. Funnel ants get their name from the volcanolike entrances to their nests. The nests can be extensive and complex (all that soil is being excavated from somewhere!) and this will often severely affect the soil structure, making it fragile and prone to collapse. Sometimes it becomes so unstable that mini-collapses cause twisted ankles and you’ll hear the kids complaining that it’s difficult to run on.

You may have also noticed how one property can be badly infested while the next door neighbour’s lawn remains relatively untouched. This usually has something to do with slight variations in the environments. For example, funnel ants tend to prefer sandy soils and are not so keen on broad-leaved grasses. There is also more activity after some rain when the ants get busy, repairing and extending their network of tunnels. Left unchecked, these colonies will continue to grow and grow. So what can be done? Unfortunately, this is a difficult problem for homeowners to fix with DIY solutions. There are ant products that can be poured down the holes which will kill the ants in the immediate vicinity but these products are not going to eliminate the whole colony. The good news is that there are treatments available to professional pest managers that are proving to be very effective. These treatments involve a slow acting insecticide that is transferred by the ants throughout the colony ensuring complete control. The insecticide also remains in the soil for a long period which will prevent the ants from returning for at least 6 months, more likely longer than a year. The problem of funnel ants does seem to be one of those situations when a professional treatment is going to prove a lot more effective (and less costly in the long run) than any DIY efforts. COOROY RAG

Why is sleep important? SLEEP plays a vital role in good health and wellbeing throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. The way you feel while you’re awake depends in part on what happens while you’re sleeping. During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Sleep also plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant (such as a car crash), or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity; results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes; and can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you’re sleep deficient, you may have trouble fighting common infections. Medications and herbs from the pharmacy are useful in aiding sleep, but it is important to also ensure you are practising good sleep hygiene principles daily to ensure you are giving yourself the best quality sleep possible. Here are some tips for those of you who might be having difficulty in the sleep department! Reduce your caffeine intake - do not have any food, medicines, or drinks that contain caffeine or other stimulants after midday or for six hours before bedtime. Reduce or quit smoking; nico-

tine is a stimulant! Reduce your alcohol intake or at least avoid alcohol within six hours before bedtime. Do not have a heavy meal just before bedtime (although a light snack may be helpful). Do not do any strenuous exercise within four hours of bedtime (but exercising earlier in the day is helpful). Exercise that involves relaxation or meditation (e.g. yoga) may be useful close to bedtime. Try to get into a routine of wakefulness during the day and sleepiness at night. The body becomes used to rhythms or routines. Try to avoid sleeping/napping during the day, switch the light out as soon as you get into bed, and try to always get up at the same time each day. Try not to use weekends to “catch up” on sleep, as this may upset the natural body rhythm that you have got used to in the week. The bedroom should be a quiet, relaxing place to sleep; it should not be too hot, cold, or noisy. Earplugs and eye shades may be useful if you are sleeping with a snoring or wakeful partner. Make sure the bedroom is dark with good curtains to stop early morning sunlight. Don’t use the bedroom for activities such as work, eating or television. Turn your iphone/ipad/miscellanous IT products on silent and keep them away from you as much as possible when trying to fall asleep—that way you won’t feel tempted to open your eyes and check them! Do not do anything that is mentally demanding within 90 minutes of going to bed such as studying. Go to bed when sleepy/tired. Some people find playing soft music is helpful at bedtime. If you cannot get off to sleep after 20-30 minutes - then get up. If you can, go into another room, and do something else such as reading or watching TV rather than brooding in bed. Go back to bed when sleepy. You can repeat this as often as necessary until you are asleep. Expose yourself to bright light soon after waking. Be active in the day. Regular exercise improves sleep. dining & entertainment Fat Pizza & Housos comedy spectacular at the Imperial Hotel

COOROY RAG

Funnyman Paul ‘Pauly’ Fenech is bringing his new show to the Sunshine Coast

– PAULY’S FAT PIZZA + HOUSOS COMEDY SPECTACULAR at 8pm

on Friday 23 June at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi. He’ll also be scouting for new “talent” for a new TV show concept to roll out in 2018. He’s made five movies, thousands of live comedy shows and over a hundred half hours of TV - and comedic genius Paul Fenech has now developed what he says is his funniest solo show yet! After a sell-out tour of the entire Queensland coast last year, Logie winning

Paul Fenech ‘The new Crown Prince of Rude’, returns with a new show that he has described as “a bourbon-fuelled bogan subwoofer bonanza of laughs!” As TV classics, Fat Pizza and Housos truly connected with audiences across the county with those characters and themes still finding a place in Fenech’s latest show. “Housos is, for me, part of a tradition in Aussie comedy that is being

eroded in the current climate of nanny state political correctness,” Fenech says. “This is stand-up comedy on speed, revealing never-seen-before footage of Fat Pizza and Housos, to create a unique two hour multimedia comedy experience complete with crowd games and parody songs,” he says. Fenech’s alter egos Pauly and Franky Falzoni (plus an assortment of other personalities that reveal them-

selves live at each show) explore every aspect of our Australian culture, creating the wildest live comedy show touring the country. Funnyman Fenech warns that all stereotypes will be sledged! The last politically incorrect showman Paul “Pauly “Fenech will also be on the hunt for the biggest bogans he can find - for a brand new TV concept he’ll be launching in 2018. All will be revealed during the course of the show at the

Imperial Hotel Eumundi. “There is a strict criteria, but I believe a special kind of bogan will be found on the Sunshine Coast,” Fenech says. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811) until 4pm on the day. $30 at the door Show starts 8pm View listing of upcoming gigs and comedy events at www.imperialhotel eumundi.com.au

Erin Yarwood from E Fitness in Cooroy is currently organising the fundraising event of the year, and you’re invited! Raising much needed funds for recently reopened Katie Rose, a local palliative care unit in Doonan, Erin is hoping for a sell out night. “Katie Rose is such an important place for us to have here on the Sunshine Coast, and has already helped so many families through tough times. As laughter is the best medicine, what better way can we raise much needed funds than a happy-go-lucky evening, full of talent, colour, giggles and happiness!?” This event is being held at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona, and promises a fantastic evening with amazing live music from Andrea Kirwin, Jimmy Davis and Craig Madden Duo. Plus you will get a good laugh by participating in Erin’s

80’s inspired aerobics classes, and being entertained by the hilarious Drag Queens Melony Brests and Sall Monalla throughout the night. Wow! There will be food and drinks available, amazing raffle prizes up for grabs, along with lucky door prizes, best dressed and best 80’s moves prizes too!!! All prizes have been generously donated by local businesses, and Erin is truly appreciative of everyone’s support. real estate Large lots and idyllic lifestyle drives sales at Cooroy’s Greenwood Grove

COOROY RAG

COOROY’S hugely popular Greenwood Grove estate is now down to its final 32 lots following a hugely successful sales period which has seen 78 home sites sold since the first lots were released to the market in November last year. Greenwood Grove spokesperson Rob Midgley said the stunning rate of sale was driven by a number of factors including the availability of large lots through to its idyllic setting with a great park, concrete walkways and a running creek which is ideal for fishing and cooling off during summer. “Most of the other estates across the Sunshine Coast have much smaller lots but our estate has an average lot size of 600m2 and they are also flat which means there’s plenty of room to build a large home with abundant room for a pool, shed or large outdoor area. “The remaining blocks on offer range from 700m2 to 900 m2 with prices commencing from $264,500 and the good news from our point of

www.cooroyrag.com.au

view is that the vast majority of the buyers are from Cooroy, Noosa and other nearby towns which is a real vote of confidence from the local community,” Rob said. Access to local education, shopping and education community facilities such as shops, the school and sporting facilities can be achieved in a few minutes from Greenwood Grove

following the completion of the developer funded $2m bridge and footbridge over Cooroy Creek in late 2015. “Residents have easy access to local conveniences including the IGA supermarket and other retail shops, the post office, hospital, pub, gallery and other local attractions. Noosa Heads is just 25 minutes down the road and If you need

to get to the city, Cooroy also has a direct train service to and from Brisbane. “With land prices commencing from $264,500 and house and land starting at $480,000, we encourage interested buyers to call our office on 5447 7198 or visit www.greenwoodgrove.com.au for more information on this final land release,” Mr Midgley added.

MATT FIDDES MARTIAL ARTS - 1800 840 403

NOOSA Gymnast Kyle McCartney has returned from the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne with an Australian Title and three other awards. Competing at the end of May over two days at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Kyle was the first representative for the Cooroy Gymnastics Club to compete for the Queensland State Team at Nationals. Kyle won his National title on Pommel finishing a clear 1st and scoring well on the pommel over the two days of competition. The pommel is probably the most technical of all gymnastics apparatus for men. He kept his routine clean and was rewarded for his consistency with the highest scores on both days. Kyle finished on the podium with a 2nd place on floor which is his favourite event. His floor routine was packed with difficulty including layout triple twist as well as sticking his double back and front somersaults. Kyle also finished in third place on parallel bars contributing to his overall achievement. Competing over the six apparatus with such consistency over two days of competition saw Kyle awarded 3rd place in the all around division. His all around two day score of 138.06 ranks him 14th in Australia amongst our Senior International mens devision de-

spite him turning 18 just days before the competition. This is a great achievement for the Sunshine Coast Grammar student who is also completing year 12. Kyle has now been short listed for an international open tour at the end of the year where he hopes to compete at his first international event.

WINTER EIGHT Noosa District State High School students competed in the National Mountain Bike Championships over the Gold Coast last weekend. The two NDSHS school teams were placed 7th and 12th overall in the under 17 boys competition and were up against 16 teams from other state, independent and private Queensland schools, with points allocated for the teams’ placings in three races over three days. The first race was the cross-country eliminator held over a course on the grounds of Bond University, with racers riding a time trial to qualify for the final series, which involved the qualifiers riding in heats before progressing

through to the finals. A cross-country Olympic event was held on the second day held at Nerang State Forest. The final day of the Schools National Championships involved a 4 hour cross-country team endurance event held at Nerang State Forest. Riders raced as a team with the race won by the team who completed the most number of laps. NDSHS students Corey Jackway, Harry Ladd, Kyle Weatherall, Elliot Styles, Jaxson Jung, Nathan Meadows, Morgan Atkinson and Sam Marchant did the school proud with their efforts and sportsmanship over the three day event.
