Our community gathers, shares & gives

Our local Biggest Morning Tea events were a huge success! This year Wythes Real Estate, together with the team at LiveLife Pharmacy, Cooroy set their sights on their Biggest Morning Tea event ever in a quest to support the Cancer Councils vision for a cancer free future. Over 100 members of the local community gathered in the Memorial Hall to enjoy a spread of delicious home-baked treats, locally grown coffee from Noosa Black, a selection of herbal teas and most importantly to dig deep for an amazing cause. A performance from local tap group, the Tap Catz, was a highlight and the cherry on top of a wonderful morning tea had by all. The event raised over $2200. Patches of Cooroy’s Biggest Morning Tea was also held in the hall and was another outstanding fundraising success with over $2000 raised to help fund the Cancer Council’s life-saving research, prevention and support programs. Thanks to special guest Judy Ditter, who spoke of her own family’s experiences with cancer. What a giving community we live in. Thank you to all involved.

news New shade sail has Cooroy Kindy kids excited

COOROY RAG Cooroy Community Kindergarten had some generous visitors last week. Over the years, the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank has worked with the kindy on small improvement projects designed to make time there even more enjoyable for the kids. From a new playground to a new recycling system, a compost tumbler and frog pond, the sponsored projects have helped the children discover how to support our environment. This week, there was a celebration to mark the latest addition to the outdoor play space - a shade sail hangs over the much-loved swing area in the playground. Diana Markovits is director of Cooroy Community Kindergarten and she said the playground equipment would previously become too hot for the children to use, being exposed to the direct sun. “This has made such a difference for our children,” Diana said. “We’re so excited about this addition and we can’t thank the Cooroy Community Bank branch and the Butler family for their generosity. The play space is now enjoyed much more often and enables us to adhere to the Sun Protection Policy keeping our children and staff safe from the sun’s harmful effects throughout

(l-r) Stellar, James, Flynn, James and Oliver are joined by Simone Butler, Kindy Director Diana Markovits, Bendigo Bank's Debbie Podolczak and Jessica Elliott the year,” she added. Being a nature and play based centre, Diana went on to share that the more opportunities provided for outdoor physical play only benefits the children by keeping them active. “Our swing area is a favorite place for the children and this sponsorship has allowed us to plan for projects above and be-

yond what we could normally budget for. The support has seen us get involved in sustainable projects that celebrate our environment and get the children learning about them too,” Diana said. The Cooroy Community Kindergarten has a long history in town. Established in 1955, it’s been in its current position on Ma-

ple Street since 1964. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Simone Flavelle said the bank’s relationship with the kindy continues to be a great fit for both parties. “It was a real treat to attend the opening of the shade sail, and as our branches in Cooroy and Pomona continue to grow and we’re delighted to

support great initiatives like this. T “The more people bank with us, the more we can give back. It was great to see the children having fun and just being healthy Aussie kids enjoying the outdoors,” Simone said. If you would like further information about Cooroy Community Kindergarten, call 5447 6037.

Another step closer to new Cooroy playground Noosa Council are turning the concept plans for the Hinterland Adventure Playground into detailed designs thanks to the Queensland Government, which has kicked in almost $2.8M to support the Cooroy project. The playground will be built beside Mary River Road, in front of the Cooroy library. Some of the features include climbing zones, a flying fox, green space, and a water play area. The playground will also include new public amenities and barbecue shelters. “Our vision is for a playground that will draw people to the hinterland - a place families will want to return to again and again and a place kids will remember fondly for the rest of their lives,” said Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington. It was projected the project would be completed by the end of the 2019.

Nicklin Community Awards

EUMUNDI CATTLE SALE

The 30th Year of National Volunteers Week was 20th – 26th May this year and it was my absolute honour to host the first of my annual ‘Nicklin Community Awards’. It didn’t take me long after being appointed Member for Nicklin, to recognise just how privileged we are to have so many incredibly generous and hardworking volunteers in the electorate. It was a full-house on Friday 24th May at the Nambour Bowls Club as we gathered to celebrate the contribution of over 40 amazing individuals and community groups, who are selflessly giving up their time and energy to make our community a great place to live. In the quality field of nominees were a couple of Cooroy standouts - Catherine Lydon and John Gabb of Rotary Club Cooroy who are involved in so many great causes and projects. From Meals on Wheels to preparing breakfast at Pomona State School, supporting many student programs at Noosa District High School, helping at the Blue Light Disco, Cooroy Ambulance Committee and many more – too many to list here. If you happen to see these two incredible people down the street, be sure to shake their hands or shout them a cuppa – absolute local champions! It’s Mobile Office time again! I will be out and about in the electorate for Round 5 of my mobile offices from Tuesday 4 June – please follow me on Facebook for details of my locations and times. Marty Hunt, MP

NoosaCare thanks volunteers Last week was National Volunteers week 20th-26th May and to celebrate NoosaCare hosted an evening to acknowledge their volunteers and say thank you for the commitment and time that they provide every day. “This dinner was just a small token of our appreciation,” said NoosaCare CEO Megan D’Elton. “Our volunteers are not only appreciated by staff but especially by our residents who form long lasting friendships through the remarkable and selfless spirit of community that resides within each of them. As a Not- for- profit organisation our volunteers are the heart of what we seek to achieve in the service that we provide. “NoosaCare has always had an extensive base of volunteers some of which have been with us for over 20 years. Our Board of Directors volunteer their time to provide guidance through their organisational governance and contribute their broad and extensive expertise. Our Op shop which has been open for over 35 years relies on the huge number of volunteer hours that are contributed every week. “As well as our day to day activities, our seasonal events have always been such a lot of fun and so well organised because of our volunteers constantly assist our diversional therapists with their creativity, decorating skills and friendship. The daily activities alone, are a lot for our small team to manage, so our volunteers offer to bring residents from their lodges, spending time talking to them walking with them and enjoying each other company. “As we expand, both Carramar in Tewantin and Kabara in Cooroy have volunteering opportunities of all sorts. If you have some time to contribute in the space of activities & music, exercises, our Café or coffee cart, gardening, pet therapy or even just time for a cuppa and a chat, we would like to welcome you as a volunteer of our NoosaCare community. “On behalf of the NoosaCare CEO and management team, we would like to thank our volunteers for everything that they do for NoosaCare and for our residents.” If you are interested in volunteering please don’t hesitate to contact Carramar 5449 8799 or Kabara 5447 7355 or email dtkabara@noosacare.com.au

Your managing real-estate agent will be able to issue you with a statement detailing this income. news Family Law and Social Media

COOROY RAG

Working for Noosa Communities

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and LinkedIn allow users to instantly publish their activities, thoughts and beliefs. As a result, it has become increasingly common for these posts to end up as evidence in family court proceedings. In fact, social media evidence can often be a quick and cost-effective way of providing evidence in support of a disputed fact. Take for example the employee that calls in sick. Their Facebook then shows that they’re enjoying a tropical holiday. Sipping cocktails on the beach in a bikini (with a time and date stamp) certainly contradicts the employee’s email that they’re home in bed with the flu. Take also for example, the ex that says they can’t afford to pay child support or spousal maintenance or that doesn’t admit to being re-partnered. It’s going to be hard for the Court to accept their evidence when their Instagram shows-off flashy engagement rings; declarations of undying love; extensive travel; cars and fine dining. #liveyourbestlife may ultimately become #thejudgeisnotanidiot Similarly, the ex that says they haven’t worked in years only to be brought down by their LinkedIn profile showing their extensive experience in paid employment. In family law matters, evidence obtained through social media can be particularly relevant in the context of parenting matters where the best interests of the children are the paramount consideration of the court. Screenshots of posts, comments and messages showing derogatory comments regarding either the children or the other parent may be used as evidence of contravention of parenting orders, or to support a contention that the party posting the material neither comprehends nor is willing to act in a way that is child-focused or appropriate. Similarly, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat photographs may reveal the children’s parents to be behaving irresponsibly or neglectfully.

It is also an offence under Section 121 of the Family Law Act 1975 to publish by electronic means (or disseminate to the public) anything that would identify a party to the proceedings, or a person related to or associated with a party to proceedings. This means that a party to family law proceedings, who gives in to an urge to vent about their ex or family law matters on social media, may expose themselves to being charged with an offence under Family Law Act. Please remember, social media is not always your friend in family law matters. However, if you are a party that engages in these behaviours on social media, then it may ultimately become the best friend of your ex’s lawyer! If you have a family law matter you need assistance with please call Amy Ryan at SPM Law 5440 4800.

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society This time of the year is the change from growing to dormant in many orchid genera. Most of the orchids require a rest period during winter, by this I mean very little watering. Over watering during winter leads to the demise of so many plants. If you can’t help yourself with the hose hang your orchids up to be a reminder to ease off the water. For more information on growing the Noosa Club has a meeting at Tinbeerwah hall on the second Saturday of each month commencing at 1pm. Visitors are welcome. This is a great way to meet like minded people. For more information contact Linda Ph. 0427570022 or visit the club web site.

Ballroom Dancing Every Tuesday evening from 7 pm to 9.30 pm at the Pomona Memorial School of Arts Hall the cost is $ 4-00, which includes supper. Phone 0407 456 939 for more information, or come and visit.

COOROY RAG

Great to be Under 8 It was a whole lot of crazy and a heap of fun at Pomona State School’s annual Under-8s Day celebration held last week. The event was held to celebrate all that’s great about being under the age of eight. The many stalls created awareness of the services, businesses, activities and organisations within our Noosa community involving children and support for their families. It showcased what they had to offer the kids and the wider community in an educational and funfilled morning. It also marked the 63rd year of Under 8’s Week in Queensland, this year celebrating the culture and diversity in our community. Locally, the Pomona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank got involved as an extension of the great and long-standing relationship they have with the school. Customer Relationship Officer, Jo Winter was there talking with parents, and sharing with the kids whilst handling out magnets, Piggy banks, backtags and bookmarks but also held a colouring-in competition for the students. It was just one part of the event where parents, grandparents and carers of Pomona State School students joined in with the activities during the morning. A variety of art stalls, community services and many sporting codes were also represented. What a day!

Jonathon and Jodie Codd are always recognised when they take their Holden HZ 1 tonne ute out for a spin, and now it is seen 6 days a week in Jarrah Street where they have recently opened their business, CME Cooroy Mechanical & Exhaust. Jonathon, a born and bred local, grew up around boats and loved the water until the day he got his driver’s license, that’s when he truly found his passion and has been a qualified mechanic for the last 18 years, with the past 10 working at RACQ in Cooroy. Luckily his wife Jodie, his partner of 18 years, also loves cars. With her father being a panel beater she grew up around them so understands the love of engines. “It isn’t just a job or a hobby but a lifestyle,” she says. Along with their 9 year old son Jayden, who is already showing a lot of interest in all things mechanical, they spend many weekends working on cars at home or going to local car club meets. When they first got the ute it was basically just a

rolling cab. Jodie helped Jonathon as he spent endless hours rebuilding it from scratch and fitting it with a commodore V8 engine, so it was only fitting she got to choose the colour. When the opportunity arose to take over the long established business ‘Tims Exhaust Centre’ in early April, they jumped at it and quickly have made it their own, CME Cooroy Mechanical & Exhaust. All the experience Jonathon has gained through his career, working on every model vehicle imaginable at RACQ , being able to diagnose a problem fast and be confident in how to fix it properly with quality workmanship, will no doubt make CME a huge success. Also working on modified cars, some that other mechanics don’t want to touch, doesn’t faze him. If he can’t find a part he will make it and he finds it an enjoyable challenge to find a way to fix the ‘unfixable’. So if you are looking for anything from a log book service to a rebuild, exhaust systems and repairs, drop in and see Jonathon and Jodie at 3/ 6 Jarrah street, or call 5442 6589 to book in.

15 May 2019 marked 30 years since the first Management Committee meeting for the Probus Club of Cooroy was held in the Cooroy RSL, so it was very fitting that the anniversary celebration was held there. A very tasty 2 course meal was served, then followed by presentations to two very special members of the Cooroy Club. President Judith Cutts welcomed Carwyn Arnold, Secretary of Probus Association of Queensland, President and Secretary of Rotary Cooroy with their wives, as well as members along with family and friends. Mr Noel Pringle, Founding and Life member received a certificate in recognition of his 30 years of service to the club. Mrs Joyce Cunningham also received a certificate as she was the first woman to join the club in 2003, when women were allowed to join, and has been a member ever since.

COOROY RAG • NOOSAVILLE • COOROY • GYMPIE • IMBIL

Cooroora Family Health is urgently looking for doctors after Principle Dr Ann Buchan stepped away from the Practice last month. Because of a shortage of GPs in our region, Dr Buchan was working 11 plus hours a day six days a week to ensure the community had access to a bulk billed facility. Even though the Practice had just passed accreditation with flying colours Medicare is demanding that $360,000 owed by the practice due to penalities for administrative errors is to be paid back in monthly instalments of $15,000.She said that basically Medicare is fining her for overworking. The community is devastated by the loss of their beloved doctor and are fearful the Practice could close. About 5000 people from as far as Bundaberg are serviced and bulk-billed at the Practice which has three service beds that the community believes takes a lot of pressure off our public hospital sys-

tem. The Practice also employs 13 staff including RNs. It is seen as an important vital part of the community. Dr Buchan said she is heading to WA to have some much needed rest with family before endeavouring to find work in a remote area to try and earn the money to pay Medicare as quickly as possible. The search for doctors to ensure the Bulk Billing Practice remains open is underway by PHN (Primary Health Network), a not for profit agency that supports and assists rural and regional practices, such as Cooroora Family Health. A community working group has also been formed to explore the possibility of the community taking over the practice, and are looking at co-operative models of primary care as demonstrated in the ACT, parts of Melbourne and remote Australia, with the aim of creating a selffunding, community owned and operated practice.

Mighty Magnesium!

Being the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, magnesium plays many roles in supporting your health. It helps dampen the effects of stress hormones to promote calming sleep, as well as relaxing muscles and reducing cramping. Magnesium protects your brain from memory loss, improves mood, concentration and learning, and lowers anxiety helping to keep you calm during stressful times. Magnesium also improves blood sugar control, which can positively impact weight, reduce sugar cravings and support energy levels. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Difficulty sleeping, fatigue, muscle cramps and headaches are common signs of magnesium deficiency in both adults and children. Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and mood disorders including anxiety, depression, and constant stress are all associated with poor body stores of magnesium. There are many different factors that contribute to magnesium deficiency. These include: inadequate

intake from foods, continual stress, and caffeine, alcohol and certain medications. When you become stressed, it affects you right down to your core, even causing damage at the cellular level by allowing energy molecules to leak from the cell. These energy molecules are needed for every function in the body; without energy your body’s ability to cope with stress is hindered, resulting in fatigue and other symptoms. But thanks to your cells’ instinctive ability to adapt to perceived stressors, the body uses magnesium to boost energy production, supporting good health and increasing your energy levels. Getting enough magnesium in your diet doesn’t always happen. In which case a supplement is wise. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. For more information call 0419 668 803, or visit nutritionmeans.com.au

health Local Physio launches online workouts designed for women

COOROY RAG

Local Physiotherapist, Rebecca Steele, has just launched an online workouts website “Core Fit By Bec”, designed specifically for the needs of women post babies. These are Physio-designed workouts that can be completed in the comfort of your own home with minimal equipment but lots of instruction. Rebecca has a special interest in Women’s Health and is familiar with the conditions that a lot of women suffer with post children, such as incontinence, prolapse and diastasis recti (tummy muscle separation). She feels that there is a large void in the exercise arena between rehab style exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist, and the high impact, or boot camp style workouts that many

women gravitate towards because they promise quick results. “The problem with exercising too hard, too soon, on a weakened foundation, is that many of these issues, even if they are underlying and not yet noticeable, can be exacerbated” according to Rebecca. She believes that “there is a need for effective workouts for women that also respect the conditions that many of these ladies will be suffering from. I teach women how to correctly engage their muscles to minimize pressures on these vulnerable areas, while incorporating strengthening exercises for the rest of their body.” Rebecca believes that with the rapid rise of social media influencers, many women are following exercise routines that are too challenging for their current level of deep muscle control, which is certainly not ideal and can be damaging long-term. The other issue that many women have in returning to exercise, is the ability to attend classes. With the constraints of children or work, many women just become inactive. It was these factors that led Rebecca to develop workouts that were affordable and accessible, anytime, anywhere. “Core Fit By Bec” workouts are suitable for women of most ages and fitness levels, however Rebecca recommends being assessed by your GP or a Continence and Women’s Health Physio prior to starting any workout programs if you are newly post-natal or are suffering with incontinence, prolapse or distasis recti to check if you are ready for more than basic level exercises. A win for the property market? No matter what your politics, the Coalition’s recent win should bring some stability to the property market which is good news. Property taxes like negative gearing and capital gains will remain untouched which should help with confidence in the housing market. The market doesn’t like uncertainty so this should now encourage investors with some commentators saying it’s a “shot in the arm”

Wythes Real Estate shortlisted for the Women in Real Estate Awards 2019 Sirah Robb, Principal and business owner of Wythes Real Estate said she was humbled by her nomination and honoured to be chosen as a finalist. Sirah added how proud she was of Alisa Wythes for her achievements over the last 12 months that contributed to her being chosen as a finalist in the Regional Sales Agent of the Year category. Sirah notes that without an incredible team and her supportive husband John, also coowner of Wythes, these accolades would not be possible. She acknowledges the contributions of all 15 of her sales, property management and administration staff towards these achievements. The winners will be announced at a fivestar gala dinner on 27 June at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney.

Honda Approved Engine Wythes Real Estate announces that Principal, Sirah Robb, and Sales Agent, Alisa Wythes, have been named in Real Estate Business’ Women in Real Estate Awards list of honourees for 2019. Sirah Robb is a finalist for Regional Principal of the Year and Alisa Wythes is a finalist for Regional Sales Agent of the Year in these Australia-wide awards. The Women in Real Estate Awards, the first national awards program to recognise the contribution of women in real estate, is dedicated to recognising excellence among the industry’s top female professionals and companies that promote gender diversity and a commitment to the progression of women. The finalist list, which was announced on Thursday, 09 May, features over 180 high-achieving real estate professionals across 27 categories.

REB editor Tim Neary said that the REB Women in Real Estate Awards is designed to show REB’s support for the women in Australian real estate. “[It is] a necessary new initiative to celebrate and recognise the female leaders, role models and future champions of the industry and to join the campaign for a more gender-balanced world,” Mr Neary said. “The awards provide a platform for women in the industry to showcase their talents. It is a great way to recognise the industry’s high-performance female agents, property managers, BDMs and businesses.” Wythes Real Estate’s recognition for its excellent contribution to the Cooroy and Noosa Hinterland real estate industry reinforces the strength of the brand in connecting with the community and engaging with its customers,” he added.

COOROY AUTO WRECKERS & ENGINE CENTRE

The form team of Div 2B, the Yowies from Kilcoy on paper provided a tough task for the winless Cutters from Pomona-Cooran. With each team fielding just 13 players, it was going to be a battle of the fittest. With the Cutters getting the ball back from the kick off all the signs were positive & when Gus Sullivan kicked an easy penalty things were looking positive. But silly penalties & dropped ball allowed Kilcoy into the contest. Several times before half time Kilcoy crossed the line but this didn’t dent the enthusiasm in Cutters. Despite the scoreline not looking overly attractive Luke Martin crossed for a try from dummy half & right on full time a rampaging Gus Sullivan crossed & converted both tries. Unfortunately despite the effort & heart shown Kilcoy ran out 56-14 winners. The next few weeks are shaping up as a real test for the club with players still having until June 30 to sign up. If you are interested call Ash on 0406000486. Don’t forget the Cutters Country Kitchen is open on Fridays. Check the Facebook page for weekly specials. Next Game - June 8 vs Beachmere @ Beachmere

COOROY RAG Impact’s Golden Girl has done it again! Taylah Robertson has just returned from Castellon Spain where she competed as part of the Australian women’s elite team. The Australian team won 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the prestigious Box International tournament. This tournament attracts boxers from all over the world and is one of the biggest tournaments on the European circuit. Taylah received the hardest draw out of all her teammates in the stacked 51kg division. The Impact Boxing Academy’s boxer needed to win 4 fights to secure the Gold medal against some of the best boxers in the world. Taylah’s first opponent was a tough and game boxer from Thailand. Taylah managed a split points victory over her which then placed her in the quarter final against the number 1 seed of the tournament Wassila Lkhadiri from France. Taylah started very strong and took the fight to her French opponent and scored a majority win 4-1 on the judges’ scorecards. With the number 1 seed out of the way Taylah’s next opponent was local Spanish favourite Laura Fernandez in the Semi Final. Another great performance with the home crowd against her saw Taylah beat Fernadez in a unanimous decision. Taylah’s final fight of the tournament for the Gold medal saw another dominant performance from Taylah to beat Tasman Benny from New Zealand to win Gold! Four fights, in four days, with four wins! An outstanding performance from Taylah. Taylah will now join 5 of her stable mates that have just recently won the Queensland Titles to compete at the Australian Titles to be held in Melbourne 2024th of June. Impact Boxing have more athletes (6) than any other single club representing Queensland at these Titles. These Australian Titles are the first selection process for Tokyo 2020 Olympics so wins at this event are crucial for the Impact crew to continue on their qualification process towards the Olympic Games. Exciting times ahead for the crew.

sport Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union

U7’s had two good games on Saturday, against USC and Brothers. Both teams provided great opposition and tested the Dragons’ defence and attacking skills. Tristan led the way on the attack with a player of the week performance, scoring good tries and making some good early passing. There was some very good defence through both games with Dragons players getting up to make early touches and also covering out wide to save several tries. Well done team. U8s Round 4 V University - Coach Dan’s drills during the week seemed to sink in. Jasper showed some thoughtfully timed clean outs and the rucks and mauls moved in the direction we wanted from some very strong determined pushing by the most of the team. There were a lot of turn overs in our favour as the Dragons showed how fiercely they can compete for the ball. Great ball smuggling by Josh K, Brooklyn, Jasper and Jack and good communication in the mauls.
