Dressing up for the Drought Angels

COOROY Supa IGA and Pomona IGA staff got their cowboy on last week dressing up to raise funds and awareness for drought stricken farmers. An impressive total of $3375 was raised through the stores for the Drought Angels, a not-for-profit charity that relies on public and corporate donations to supply farming communities with food, services and much more. The Drought is still here with many regions being drought declared since 2013. A lot of families and communities were still trying to recover from previous years of drought before being affected by this current devastating one.

For the month of June, Cooroy Supa IGA will be raising funds for Give Me 5 for Kids. By purchasing a $1 raffle ticket you can win a trolley full of groceries.

Owners loss is your gain – Infrastructure plus on offer The owners of this scenic 3.64 ha (8.97 acres) property had their beautiful family home destroyed by fire 18 months ago and rather than rebuild they have chosen to move on. This provides a great opportunity for an astute buyer, with approximately $250K of near new infrastructure already in place – all you need to do is add your dream home. The private road access runs from the bottom of the block, past the 9x15m powered shed, to the top of the ridge where the former home site is located. Both threephase and single-phase underground power is connected via heavy duty 50mm wiring to the shed and continues up to the house site. Here there is an inground fibreglass pool, ready for some minor repairs and reconnection, plus an underground 12,500 gallon concrete water tank and an Ozi Kleen waste management system. The outlook from this elevated location is spectacular and perfect for catching the sunset across the adjoining hillsides. Nature lovers will appreciate the value of the three acres of old regrowth rainforest which contains large Brown Kurrajong trees, a mob of breeding wallabies, long-neck turtles, eels and a diversity of bush birds. Two large dams are in place so water needs are covered for gardens and livestock if needed. The current owners have the property listed with Land for Wildlife to ensure their unique natural land is protected for future generations. The large Colourbond shed has been used as a commercial workshop for the last 14 years and is fully insulated, features a high roof and has wide 3.6m eaves for maximum shade. This is ideal for a work-from-home business or tradesperson. There are a number of suitable build sites on the block if you’d prefer the lush rainforest outlook over the hillside vistas. Located just four minutes to the buzzing Noosa hinterland township of Cooroy, this property is close to services, schools and railways with handy highway access to Brisbane and it’s domestic and international airport terminals. Noosa’s main beach and Hastings Street shopping precinct is just 30 minutes away. Call Jim Ennis at Fiona Winter Realty on 0402 587 298.

Family Festival Fun

ONCE again the Noosa Festival of Water, at Cooroy’s stunning Lake Macdonald and the Noosa Botanic Gardens, provides something for all ages to enjoy. Everyone is invited to come along from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday 24th June 2018 to enjoy local entertainers and learn more about how to protect and care for the unique ecological and environmental attributes which make Noosa such a special place to live and visit. Bring along your boardies and a towel if you want to make use of the calm waters of Lake Macdonald to learn to kayak and standup paddleboard. The Creative Kids Marquee with activities focussed on caring for our land and water in the Noosa Biosphere is a great place for kids and

parents to spend an hour or more. For a chance to win a prize, keen anglers of all ages should register now for the Catch and Release Bass Fishing Competition which kicks off at 6.30 am on the day at Mary River Cod Park in Collwood Road. Visit www.noosa festivalofwater.org to download the entry form. The Festival offers a rare opportunity to visit the Gerry Cook Hatchery and learn how wild populations of the Mary River cod, one of Australia’s most endangered freshwater fish, are being restored. You can reach the hatchery by road or take a free boat trip across the Lake from the Botanic Gardens to Mary River Cod Park and back. Be entertained throughout the day by fantastic local artists and experts in the magnificent Grecian

style Amphitheatre. Highlights include storytelling and dance from Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers, the wonderful sounds of Andrea Kirwin, the incredible musical talent of Phenix, the original sounds of the Strangest Dreamers and Festival favourite Geckoes Wildlife’s Martin Fingland with his collection of furry, feathered and slithery native wildlife. Bring along your current Noosa Rates notice if you want your two free trees from Noosa Landcare and take advantage of the Mary River Catchment Committee’s (MRCCC) free water testing available for anyone wanting their creek, dam or bore water sample tested. Once again the Noosa Community Biosphere group will

be offering heavily discounted stainless steel water bottles which can be filled at Unitywater’s “Back to Tap” refill station at the Festival, so you can be a part of our commitment to move away from the sale of single use, plastic water bottles. A diverse range of community groups will be in attendance with information and displays, and throughout the day you will be able to enjoy kids face painting, a jumping castle, Snake and Reptile shows and a great selection of food and drink. A courtesy bus operates all day to bring people to the Festival from the parking areas along Lake Macdonald Drive. To be in the running for a fantastic accommodation package at

Peppers Resort Noosa, everyone is encouraged to pick up a copy of the Festival program and lodge their feedback form at the Festival. The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) hosts this free annual event with support from Noosa Council, Seqwater, Unitywater, the Burnett Mary Regional Group and Queensland Water and Landcarers. The Festival is also supported by Noosa Landcare, the staff at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and hundreds of volunteers dedicated to caring for our natural environment. For more information about the Noosa Festival of Water, check out the Facebook page, visit the website at www.noosafestivalof water.org or call the MRCCC on 07 5482 4766.

That includes children who have been displaced due to domestic violence, natural disasters or in remote indigenous communities in Australia or overseas. CWA hall in Cooroy to transform old police uniforms into amazing clothing creations including dresses, hats, bags, shorts and pyjamas. The finished products are that good they could be sold in any of the weekend markets on the Sunshine Coast. The old uniforms are donated by Queensland Police, Australian Border Force and Federal Police officers, firefighters and ambulance officers. Australia Zoo also donates its trademark khaki

gear. Pauline Clayton, from the Sunshine Coastbased Brighter Future for Kids Foundation, said one in six children in Australia live below the poverty line. “There are children in need everywhere,” she said. Mrs Clayton said the volunteer sewers are inspirational and do it without any funding. “The creativity of women with sewing skills developed over 40, 50, 60 or 70 years has been harnessed. “They are making a difference and they are happy and the joy

spreads,” Mrs Clayton said. She estimates up to 5,000 items of clothing may have been distributed. Senior Sergeant Kim Cavell is the officer in charge of the Sunshine Coast Vulnerable Persons Unit. She said local police have thrown their support behind the project because they can see its social value. “Police realise we can’t arrest our way out of domestic violence and it’s a community and a social response,” Sergeant Cavell

said. “It’s something that’s tangible and means something and we can help supply clothing to children who really need it. “Sometimes domestic violence incidents occur in the middle of the night and there’s a need for the victim and the children’s safety to remove them from their own homes and to put them in refuges. “They may just have to up and run and don’t have the time to collect their clothing, so it’s good for us to be able to help provide clothing so the refuges can use it,” Sergeant Cavell said. “They could be in refuges for days, weeks and even months and move between refuges so it’s just a little something we can do locally with police that can assist in that small way. She said police really feel for children that are involved in any settings which may cause them harm and it shows another side to police as well. Margaret Coventry has been sewing clothes with the Cooroy group for about 18 months. “It bridges the gap between police and the community,” Mrs Coventry said. She said it’s inspirational and is important for the women as well “because we’re achieving something and we’re being creative and I think that’s great”.

LAWYERS are often asked about the process of what happens to a person’s estate after they die and how long it can take to have access to an inheritance. Probate can often be an important part of the process that many people may be unaware of. So, what is “Probate”? Obtaining a Grant of Probate for a Will is an application to the Supreme Court of Queensland for an order that the Will is legally valid and the last known Will of that person. The Grant of Probate then allows the executor to administer the estate in accordance with the deceased person’s wishes within the Will. The executor is the person nominated in the will to administer the estate. After 30 days from the death of a person, the executor of the will may apply for probate. There are notice periods to various parties first and it is not normally sought until at least 2 to 3 months after the date of death. Probate will usually be granted between 4-8 weeks after application is made. There are a number of reasons to get Probate, but usually it will depend on the assets of the estate. A Grant of Probate not only protects the executor, it will also protect any entity which holds an asset of the estate. Depending on the amount held in any account, most banks will require it to deal with their accounts. If there are any shares held in the estate then Probate will also be required to deal with those shares. Quite often Retirement Villages will require it to release any bond or security they hold. Real estate is one asset that does not need probate to deal with it, however the Titles Office will usually require the original will to be lodged if Probate is not obtained. Sometimes the process of applying for probate can get complicated; in particular if there are excluded beneficiaries or if there have been inappropriate provisions made for certain beneficiaries. A Grant of Probate will not protect against a Family Provision Application where an excluded beneficiary wishes to seek further provision from the estate. SPM Law are here to help. If you are the executor of a will, or a beneficiary uncertain about your rights, and have any questions, contact our estate administration team of Andrew Markert, Michael Sobey and Debbie Meadows. What to expect when meeting a financial adviser Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* A financial adviser can help you work out how to manage your money to help build your wealth and reach your goals. Money may not buy happiness, but a sense of control over your finances, and working towards reaching your goals, just might. Good financial advice can help with this, by giving you the opportunity to make the most of any money you earn in your lifetime – whether that’s a little or a lot. It’s never too early, or too late, to see a financial adviser. Here’s a bit more about what expect and how to prepare. How a financial adviser can help An adviser is like a personal coach for your money. They bring the knowledge, expertise and guidance to identify your financial goals and help you reach them. They’ll spend some time with you up front to understand who you are and what you’d like to achieve, taking into account your entire financial situation. Then, they can tailor a plan to help you get there.

You can choose how involved you’d like an adviser to be. You may only want to meet with them when something happens that causes you to reconsider your finances, like buying a house or starting a family, or you may want a more comprehensive, long term plan. Here are some of the specific ways a financial adviser can help: Debt and cash flow Form a strategy to help you better manage your debts and expenses, so you can make the most of the money you have. Insurance: Explain how different types of insurance work, what they cover you for, and help put in place the right amount of protection in case things don’t go according to plan. Investments: Explain different types of investments, and help you choose those which will best help you reach your goals and fit with your appetite for risk. Super and retirement: Help you work out which super fund is right for you and advise about your super investment options, or help you set up a self-man-

aged super fund. If you know the type of retirement you’d like to have, they can recommend ways to help you achieve it. It’s always a good idea to think about your current personal and financial situation and future goals before working towards a plan to achieve them. It’s also important to be honest and as accurate as possible so your adviser can give you the most relevant advice. When you meet with an adviser, the steps they’ll take are: identify and agree on the advice you need; collect information and discuss costs upfront; define your goals and current position; look at your attitude towards risk; consider your options; provide recommendations in writing; discuss and agree on recommendations; implement recommendations; · review your objectives and finances to make sure you stay on track. Your adviser may ask questions about your circumstances depending on your goals and motivations for seeking advice, so it helps to take any documents along with you, re-

lated to things such as: mortgage or rental payments; assets, such as property, cars, savings; debts, such as personal loans or credit card balances; family situation, such as number and ages of dependents; career, employment and earnings; spending habits and expenses; insurance cover; super balance; investments; retirement plans. It’s also helpful to take some time to think about your goals before the meeting. Your financial goals could be long-term, short-term or both, and may include things like: Setting your kids up for the future; Saving for your retirement; Buying an investment property. You should also discuss whether you’d like their advice to cover one aspect of your life, or your finances more broadly. The range of advice to be provided is referred to as the ‘scope of advice’ and is an agreement between the adviser and yourself. The adviser must ensure that the scope of advice addresses your goals, objectives and needs and they must discuss this with

you prior to proceeding. Setting these guidelines clearly will also help the adviser to provide information about the cost of their advice. While the initial meeting with an adviser may be free of charge, the costs after that vary depending on the complexity of the advice, frequency of advice and the types of financial products recommended. Using the information gathered at the first meeting and further research, the adviser will put together a written document called a “Statement of Advice” with detailed recommendations to help you achieve your goals. You will have to pay for the statement of advice, and the costs will be explained to you and provided in writing before you agree to proceed. If your adviser has recommended any products as part of their advice, they’ll provide you with the Product Disclosure Statement, which outlines the product’s features and charges. All advisers must only provide recommendations

to products that are in your best interests (not theirs). This is called Best Interest Duty and you will see information about the research they’ve done and why they chose the product in your statement of advice. It’s recommended that you review the product and strategy in detail at home and only agree to commit if you fully understand it. Once you’ve put a financial plan in place, reviewing it annually is important to make sure it continues to meet your needs and goals, which are likely to change over time. Be aware that an ongoing service fee will be applied for these reviews. How to find a financial adviser You could seek recommendations from family, friends, or colleagues, from another finance professional such as your solicitor or accountant (if you have one), or contact an industry association such as the Financial Planning Association or the Association of Financial Advisers. It’s a good idea to interview a shortlist of advisers before making a final deci-

sion. After all, you want to be working with someone you like and trust. Feel free to call our office on 07 5447 7740 to discuss further. GLENDA Ernst has been operating Lady Bird Noosa, the underwear, sleepwear and lingerie shop, in the Noosa Junction Plaza for the past 10 years and has been in the industry for 34 years. When asked why they are still here, Glenda says simply, “we fit well.” “Our customers are not only local. Many holiday makers return every year, from all over Australia and from overseas, to stock up on their bras and underwear. Glenda says she has just finished reading a book called “Why Purpose Matters” explaining the importance of identifying the reason for doing what we do. “When I examined my own business, I asked myself why are we in business? What is it that gives us the greatest buzz?” The answer lies in the sheer pleasure that we, as bra fitters, feel when both the customer and ourselves know that we have nailed it. The bra fits perfectly, it suits her personality and it suits her lifestyle. “It is for this reason that we go home every day knowing that we have contributed to the wellbe-

ing and confidence of so many women. For more than thirty years we have been doing just that and it’s what keeps us going – the pleasure of knowing that we have made women’s lives happier and more comfortable,” says Glenda. The fabrics, styles and sizings have changed dramatically over the years. The spacer fabric has given the padded bra breathability and lightness, the modern sports bra is all about moisture control with incredible strength and featherweight lightness. Size 12B has given way to 14DD and 14E with many ranges going to H cups and beyond. Mastectomy bras are now pretty and European designed in fabulous colours and styles. The mastectomy forms are now much lighter and more versatile, a favourite being almost a shell and suitable for everyday swimming. The unpadded lace bra has made a welcome return. “Our close relationship with our customers result in our ranges being many and varied from the budget to the expensive. Wired bras sit alongside wirefree in all categories – basic, fashion, sport, strapless and mastectomy. Domestic ranges are

Vale: Daphney “Daph” (Thompson) Jeffs DAPH was born on the 11th of May 1944 at the Nambour General Hospital, the second daughter to Ernest Lee and Ruby Thompson. The family lived on a dairy farm at Yandina Creek. From an early age Daph had a special love and bond with their farm animals. When Daph was there they would gather around her and Daph’s dad said you would practically have to lift them out of the way to get your chores done. To the end Daph’s love for animals was a wonderful thing to see and her much loved dog Ace was with her to the very last morning, sleeping by her side. Daph attended the Yandina Creek School and walked or rode her horse ‘Blondie’ the 3 ½ miles there and back, milking cows before and after school. Daph’s copy books were an art form, her writing perfection. Daph’s first job was working for my Aunty, Val Templeton, looking after her new born twins Rick and Penny, and farm duties. At 17 years of age Daph became a nurse at the Cooroy St Margaret’s Private Hospital. She was a natural born nurse, very dedicated.

The patients loved her and she loved them. These young nurses not only did the work of washing patients, bed pans etc, they also administered the medication and needles. On night duty they would have up to 22 patients and 3 new born babies. One nurse did this from 10pm to 6am, the next morning only being allowed to call for assistance in a life threatening situation. They were so young but what a sterling job they did. Daph and I got married on March 3, 1962. Our children – first Fiona arrived in 1963 and Mark in 1966. Daph not only decorated our home but also our lives. To supplement our income Daph went bean picking in the cold and often wet windy winters. She also pulled ginger in the hot and often muddy summers. Daph still made time to keep a clean and tidy home with great wholesome meals and love with a cup of milo, bickies and cake for Fiona and Mark when they arrived home from school. Daph tutored our children even before they started school. On their very first day they could write their names, write

Page 10 - Cooroy Rag, June 6, 2018

and count to 10, do little sums and recite and write the alphabet. She made sure they got the education she never did. She took them to church and Sunday school and got them involved in music, ballet, Scouts, Guides then later horses, pony club and cricket. Daph did not just send them to these activities she went with them and involved herself in what they did and how they did it. She led by example. I also got my fair share of her devotion. In 1970 Daph took over and operated the Black Mountain School bus run with an old Austin crash gear box bus nicknamed the ‘Marlborough Box’ because it was red and white like the cigarette packet. In 1980 Daph designed and we built the home I live in today. 1981 saw Daph and I buy the garage where I had worked since 1954 and so started “Jeffs Auto Services & RACQ”. Daph worked along side of me for 20 years until we retired in 2001 and was responsible with me for leaving a permanent legacy for our children. Daph still found time to

play the sport she loved most – tennis. She played all over the Sunshine Coast and beyond winning many trophies but the tennis and the friendships were far more important to her. During the 1980s Daph supported Fiona with her horses and eventually into the Miss Australia Quest. The second Tuesday of each month was a fundraising meeting and lunch with eight local friends. 35 years later the lunch meets are still going strong. Those ladies could show many a business corporation how to fundraise and have a grand time while doing so. The ‘last lunch’ was

on Tuesday, May 8 th 2018. Daph was so thrilled as the girls were there including three of the originals from the 1983 team. Daph passed away unexpectedly after Mother’s Day. I can still see that young girl at the Yandina Dance in January 1959 with the shiny brown shoulder length hair, sparkling light blue eyes and the perfect olive skin and fly away skirt. And she could dance. I was a gonner. Goodbye my little dance mate. I would go with you again on the ‘journey of Life’ if I could. Rob Jeffs

Stump removal at Cooroy Golf Club THE Cooroy Golf Club’s Volunteer Program includes numerous projects that members of the Club volunteer their time to assist the Course Superintendent Todd McNamee and his staff Paul Dawson, Brendan O’Brien and Alex Delridge. The overall décor of the course is constantly being upgraded with the help of the volunteers which in turn allows Todd and his staff to focus their time on the fairways and greens. A tree stump removal project has just been completed which resulted in approximately 90 stumps being ground away. Kennards Hire Noosaville generously donated the use of a stump grinder for a 2 day work program which has just been completed. Some of the Cooroy Golf Club members rallied together to grind stumps, clean up and landscape afterwards, and provide the much welcomed morning teas and lunches for those doing the hard work. Another project recently completed has been the upgrade of hazard stakes throughout the course. Yellow and red paint from Mitre10 Cooroy and new stakes from Mitre10 Noosaville were donated in support of this project. Club Manager Wayne Patston said that the club is eager to obtain community focussed business support. “The Club’s Promotions and Sponsorship campaign hopes to encourage local business community support for future sponsorship of equipment and product supplies.” “We encourage local businesses to support our weekly competitions, tee and green advertising, and sponsorship and advertising for major events.” “Information about our Club is available on our website and I invite everyone to log-in to learn more about our Club.” “New members are always welcome at Cooroy Golf Club” he said.

Letters to the editor IN response to Mayor Wellington’s statement regarding the Cooroy RV Stopover (Cooroy Rag, May 23, 2018). The facts and reality need to be made known to the Cooroy Community, and in particular the Cooroy business community. The Noosa councillors and Council have sat on their hands for over 2 ½ years over which time they have ignored experienced and well researched advice and now decided to wipe their hands of any responsibility to their abysmal exercise they have created. Their inept mismanagement has created a cost (debt) to the ratepayers of approximately $50,000. They were advised right from the start that their business model (if there ever was one) was flawed. Again they chose to ignore that and continued to squander even more of ratepayers money. The Deputy Mayor requested a submission of how to properly run the RV Stopover. This was done and duly ignored without any consultation to it by Council. Within the submission they were further advised that without facilities, ie toilets and showers, that the number of patrons would be extremely limited thereby depleting the viability of the stopover which proved to be the case. Council still refused to unlock the ratepayer owned existing facilities but allowed the car and pony club and visiting public to use them! Not only did they squander $50,000 of ratepayers’ monies but also denied the business community of the great opportunity that is enjoyed by hundreds of other forward-thinking RV friendly towns throughout Australia. Have they acted in the best interest of the community and ratepayers (a requirement of all in public office). The answer is a resounding no! If they were a private enterprise they would have been sacked long ago for incompetence, mismanagement and misappropriation of funds. Furthermore, it begs the question – if this is typical of the way they have mishandled this community venture, then what else have they bungled.

We can only hope that some forward thinking not for profit organisation will get hold of this site and get it up and running although on the present figures and without the facilities being unlocked it is hard to see any profitability in spite of the Mayor claiming it to be a real ‘win win’ situation? I am thoroughly disappointed by the lack of performance and transparency by those elected to public office. They are not acting in our best interest, we have no representation by a resident councillor in the hinterland any more and they’re treating us like mushrooms. Doug Claydon, Cooroy

GOOD morning, reading about Martin Duncan’s plan for morning teas in the hall. Whilst appreciating his efforts to help the local seniors (I am one of these), my question is “Do we really need another coffee shop in Cooroy?” I am sure there are better ways to assist seniors enjoy the hall … what about organising weekly, fortnightly or monthly Morning Melodies shows, after which we “oldies” can go along to our favourite (one of about 25 already established local coffee shops) for our coffee etc. There must be other ideas too for using the hall. Just my humble opinion. Margaret Price, Cooroy

LAST Saturday night I was lucky enough to get a ticket before the ‘sold out’ sign went up for the Bob Dylan birthday show at the Majestic Theatre Pomona. It was the best concert of this kind I have ever attended. The musicians were all local from all round the Sunshine Coast and aged from about 20 to 70. There was so much talent it was incredible with at least 20 different acts. They sang their various interpretations of Bob Dylan’s songs and the audience had an absolute smorgasbord of good musicians to enjoy. It was a really lovely community event. I met lots of new people who had travelled from far afield to be there from Gympie, Maleny, Nambour, Caloundra, Bli Bli, Noosa and even Brisbane. One of the performers, Barry Charles had family from Melbourne come up too. The volunteers at the Majestic Theatre are doing a magnificent job of revitalising this wonderful theatre. I picked up a program of all the events coming up and it really is the place to go for a night out. Well done to everyone who contributed to this awesome event. Keep up the good work at the Majestic. I look forward to the next one. Very Impressed Jenny Smidt, Peregian Springs

PROBUS has interesting and informative guest speakers we have each month. Our latest speaker was Peter Widt from the Police Volunteering Unit. He spoke to us about ‘Identity Theft’ with the main focus on how we can and should protect ourselves. He outlined how identity theft occurs and the measures that we all should take to guard against it. Sadly, greedy, unscrupulous individuals are stealing our hard earn money and our identities for their personal gain … millions of dollars are lost each year. Apparently, ‘skimming’ is the fastest growing crime in Australia today. Identity theft incurs an enormous cost to you, your credit rating and to your reputation. Be warned and keep yourself informed and vigilant when using credit cards and internet banking. The Probus Club of Cooroy meets on the first Monday of each month in the Anglican Church Hall, Miva Street, Cooroy.

Country music concerts

WHEN the President of the Australasian Country Music Association, Shirley Robinson, asked the Yandina Branch to bring some comedy into their segment in the Jamboree at the Hall of Fame in Yandina, they brought it in spades. They entertained the crowd with a ‘visual interpretation’ of songs ‘Pokarekare Ana’ and ‘When I grow up and get a job’ followed by line dancing to ‘Boot Scootin’ Boogie’. This was interspersed with lively performances and some country rock from members that showcased their Sunday concerts. They gave a colourful, entertaining and memorable show and the Yandina Branch offered a massive thank you to all members who participated to recognise a great team effort! The Yandina branch holds concerts on the 3rd Sunday of every month at the Hall

Tall Trees Art Exhibition set to reignite creative buzz along Cooran’s main street

FOLLOWING on from its hugely successful streetscape format last year, the 2018 Tall Trees Art Exhibition will stretch from one end of Cooran’s King Street to the other, and is on from the 29th June to the 1st of July. Visitors can meander along and view the work of local artists in various mediums in a variety of settings. Venues over the June-July weekend range from local eclectic coffee shops, private galleries, popular restaurants, social spaces and the open studios of local artists. The exhibition aims to recognise, promote and bring together local artists and the community. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale over the festive weekend to visitors from near and afar. In Cooran’s scenic hinterland location, you can immerse yourself in a creative zone with interactive arts and music workshops, an arty story time in the playground, and a separate orchestra

performance in the Hall, on Saturday afternoon. Exhibition organiser Mia Hacker says, “The high quality of work in numerous 2D and 3D mediums, produced by local artists is expected to attract a lot of attention from the Arts world. The exhibition has established itself as a must see event in the South East Queensland Arts calendar”. The Bendigo Bank Meet the Artists – Opening night will officially gathers at 6pm on Friday 29 June, its ‘meet and greet’ with the artists, at the popular ‘Hinterland Restaurant’ with an after party at ‘The Blue Chair Gallery’. All are welcome to attend and meet the artists and learn more about their creative pursuits, on the night, and throughout the whole weekend. Awesome Food and Drinks available for breakfast, lunch and dinner from various locations throughout the village, including GF and Vegan options. Deb Dougherty, Mari Gray, Ann White and Lies Donovan are four artists who come together once a month to share the pleasure of creating art. Each has their own choice of medium and style. The still life is set up, and the artists create.

The four friends share a common bond when painting these “still life” in that they are continuing a tradition begun with the late Lyn Mcrea. Their various interpretations of still life, together with some of their individual favourites will be on display at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, in the Banana Shed, until 5 July 2018.

Star Gazing World Record broken

The Pomona Astronomy Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of each Month at the Lawson Shed, Pomona Community House. Phone Cliff Watson on 0474 025 215 or email cliffwatson350@gmail.com for more information.

ABC Stargazing Live fans have broken a world record for the most people stargazing across multiple venues at the same time. ABC in partnership with the Australian National University broke the previous 2015 Guinness World Record of 7960 people observing across 37 locations, with over 40,000* (exact number not yet in) people across Australia simultaneously observing the moon through a telescope for 10 minutes on the night of May 23. There were more than 285 “Star Parties” hosted by community groups and organisations in every state and territory. One such party was hosted by Cliff Watson, Co-ordinator of the Pomona Astronomy Club, at the Combined Coastal Car Club where over 100 people turned up to join in the world record attempt. “People of all ages turned up, not just for the record attempt, but to look through a telescope for the first time,” said Cliff. “Before the record attempt began we had scopes looking at Jupiter, Saturn and the prominent moon. It was a beautiful clear night and for some it was their first time seeing inside craters and mountains on the moon. It was a lot of fun.” Cliff would like to thank everyone for turning up for the event and the many helpers who helped make it such a great success including his wife Jacqui, Cr Joe Jurisevic, Beany, Terrie Browne, Robyn Pipke, Meghan Jarvis, Ken Coleman, Abbie Lonsdale, Barbara Maerkl to mention a few. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and when ratified, a World Record Certificate!

Three reasons to see your physiotherapist MOST people associate physiotherapy with pain and injury management. While helping you recover from pain is our specialty, physiotherapists are also able to help with many more issues. Here are three things that you may not have thought to visit a physiotherapist for. Stiffness and Inflexibility Almost all of us have experienced pain and stiffness after a day of increased or unaccustomed exercise. This kind of stiffness usually wears of quickly, and is referred to as DOMS (delayed onset muscles soreness). If however, you find yourself feeling stiff for longer periods, or even most the time – it might be time to see a physiotherapist. There are many different

causes of stiffness and inflexibility; by far the most common is lack of movement. Our joints and muscles both lose flexibility if they are not regularly moved all the way through their range. Muscles can feel short and tight with a bouncy feeling of restriction and joints are more of a hard ‘blocked’ feeling when you try to move. For this kind of stiffness, you may not even notice that you have lost range, as it can be very easy to adapt your movements to compensate. Your physiotherapist can help you to identify where you have areas of inflexibility and help you to exercise, stretch and mobilise your joints to get them back to a healthy range. Disease processes such as Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can also cause prolonged stiffness and your physiotherapist is well equipped to help you deal with these conditions. Reduced Strength or Weakness There are many reasons for weakness in the body, from generalised disuse, weakness in one muscle group following injury, neurological weakness or structural weakness of joint following an injury. Weakness of any kind can predispose you to future injury and can be surprisingly difficult to resolve without targeted exercises. Your physiotherapist is able to determine the cause of

your weakness and determine the best treatment to restore your muscle strength. Reduced Balance Keeping your balance is a very complicated process and your body works hard to make sure you stay on your feet. Humans have a very small base of support for our height and we use all our senses together to determine which movements we should make to stay upright, including our visual, vestibular, muscular and sensory systems. As balance is so important, if one part of our senses begins to weaken, the others will quickly compensate, so you may not notice that your balance has worsened until you fall or trip over. As a general rule, our balance deteriorates as we age but this does not mean that falls should be an inevitable part of aging. Actively working to maintain or improve your balance can have a significant effect on your quality of life and confidence in getting around. Your physiotherapist is able to test all the aspects of your balance and provide effective rehabilitation to help keep you on your feet. If you would like to consult one of the experienced Physiotherapists at Hinteractive Physio, please contact us on 5442 5556. We offer physiotherapy consultations as well as clinical exercise programs to help you achieve your goals. Are you sick of feeling sick? DO you shudder when you hear someone cough nearby because you just know you’re going to get sick? Do you or your family of often complete a course of antibiotics to treat an infection, only for it to return a month later? You are not alone! Hordes of people are frequently unwell with upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), influenza (flu), ear infections, and a multitude of other recurrent infections. So what is it that decreases your immune system function – and what can you do about it? Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. “Several factors have the potential to diminish your immune function and make you more susceptible to getting sick; these include stress, a lack of regular exercise, inadequate sleep, and poor nutrition. Frequent antibiotic use, which often goes hand in hand with repeated infections, can also contribute to lowered immunity. It’s true that antibiotics serve an essential purpose in eliminating bacterial infections to help you feel well again. However, they are commonly overprescribed for

viral infections (such as colds, flus, and URTIs), even though they do not have any effect against viruses. This overuse of antibiotics can not only reduce their efficacy, but also unbalance the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut, further compromising your immunity. So you may be asking “what’s the solution?” Fortunately, there are natural treatments available which can help to strengthen your immune system and keep you well for longer. “Natural immune boosters, such as medicinal mushrooms (e.g. Coriolus and Reishi), increase the production of immune cells that help fight off infections more effectively and have potent antiviral activity to help you recover faster. There are many well-known immune enhancing herb, including Astragalus, which can reduce the occurrence of reinfection and help to restore your energy levels after being sick. “In addition to taking immune enhancing herbs, there are numerous ways you can support healthy immunity through your diet and lifestyle choices: Ensure you get a good night’s sleep and let your

body work its magic. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. These foods contain abundant immune supportive vitamins and minerals. Garlic is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent and an immune booster. Ginger helps to warm you up and fends off illness by reducing inflammation. Drink plenty of water. It is essential that you keep hydrated. Unwind. While it may be difficult to reduce stress in your life, it is possible to manage stress more effectively. Participate in yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises 3 to 4 times a week, or as often as needed.” Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means and a Naturopath specialising in a wide range of health conditions. Warning signs for a faulty “ticker” WHEN experiencing the symptoms of heart attack, it is important to understand they may not always be sudden or severe and may vary widely from person-to-person. You may have just one of these symptoms … you may experience them all. They may come on suddenly or develop more slowly over a period of time. It is important to call 000 if you experience any of the following. You can never be too careful with your heart! Some of the more common signs include: ·Discomfort/pain in the centre of the chest. This often feels like a heaviness or tightness and may spread to the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw or back; Shortness of breath; Nausea and cold sweats; Dizziness/light-headedness; Generally feeling “unwell” or “not quite right”. People often confuse the term “heart attack” (as above) with “cardiac arrest.” A sudden cardiac

arrest is caused by the heart malfunctioning and then stopping beating unexpectedly. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart, causing the heartbeat to become irregular. In comparison, a heart attack, as described above, occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, preventing oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If this blockage cannot be reopened quickly, then parts of the heart begin to “die.” You may ask how these 2 conditions are linked? When a sudden cardiac arrest occurs, it is often caused by a heart attack as it disrupts the heart rhythm and therefore increase the risk of sending the heart into “arrest.” LiveLife Pharmacies have taken an interest in your heart-health and have invested to ensure there is a defibrillator machine available at ALL of their pharmacy locations.

health Motorcycle enthusiasts to support local charities in annual Poker Run

COOROY RAG

THIS year the King of the Mountain Festival will celebrate its 40th year and event organisers are working hard to ensure it is the biggest and best yet. In the lead up to the King of the Mountain Festival on 22 July is the 12th annual Poker Run on Sunday 1 July. Proudly supported by the Overlanders Motorcycle Event Group, motorcyclists and their passengers will enjoy a scenic trip through the hinterland and can join in on a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops. The holder of the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner and there are additional random prize draws during the day. Last year saw over 150 riders participate in the popular Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club major fundraiser. Cost of entry is $20 per rider (including poker

hand) plus $10 per pillion (non-poker hand). Registrations commence from 7.30am at Stan Topper Park, Pomona. Bacon & Egg Muffins will be available to purchase before departure. Free tea and coffee and delicious home-made morning tea is also offered to participants. The ride culminates at the Pomona Bowls club where riders can enjoy a beverage during the raffle prize draws and winner’s presentation, and a free sausage sizzle. All efforts are made to ensure the safest route possible and that all poker card pick up locations can accommodate large groups of motorcyclists. Volunteers are briefed on the route and greet participants along the way to provide guidance so riders can make the most of the good company and the beautiful scenery. This year will also see the introduction of the first King of the Mountain Bike Course through the Yurol Forrest and Noosa Trail Network. Aimed at beginner, intermediate and advanced level cy-

clists, the uncompetitive fun ride is expected to attract those keen to see another side of Pomona’s beautiful environment. Registration for the ride also held on 22 July will commence at 8am at the Pomona State School before the ride starts at 9am. Entry fees; Adult $10, $5 Junior, $20 family (up to 5 people). The popular Heritage Markets will again feature as part of the festival’s action-packed program. To enquire about stall availability and fees, please contact Vicki Dessaix on 0400 973 604. All entry fees go towards helping the CooroyPomona Lions support a wide range of local charities and school programs. Struggling with drug & alcohol abuse? WHERE do families go to get support if someone they love is struggling with drugs or alcohol? When someone in the family is problematically using drugs or alcohol, everyone suffers. How do you keep loving, caring and supporting someone when broken promises, abuse and generally negative behaviour is what you get back? For many families, the journey has been a long one with seemingly no end in sight. Exhaustion sets in with immense sadness and loss of hope for the future. Nothing can ever prepare family members for this journey. Life for everyone in the family changes forever. Yet despite the chaos, families continue to hang in there and support their dependent person. Many of which have simply stated that without their family’s support, they would not have survived. However, the big question is who supports the families? Rather than finding support, families often feel judged, blamed and shamed. They face enormous challenges and without support, isolation and helplessness will set in. It is a nightmare that no one can fully understand. Help and support is available from Family Drug Support (FDS). FDS is a not-for-profit organisation that has been providing a range of support services specifically designed for family members of drug and alcohol users for over 18 years. Stepping Stones is FDS’ flagship award winning support program. FDS has been delivering this course for over a decade providing reality based support to over 1500 family members. Theo is the Program Man-

ager and course leader. “We have delivered this program nationwide over 150 times nationally in the past 15 years bringing support to over 1500 family members.. Along the way, we have seen the enormous difference from when people enter the course and when they leave”, he says. “They are stronger, better supported and have taken on skills to better manage their relationship with the user. This will in turn help the user towards better outcomes. And we are so pleased we can offer the course to families in Gympie and the surrounding areas”. “While there are no guarantees”, says Theo from FDS, “you will be very glad you came along. Becoming more resilient and having skills to cope better will allow you to survive the journey intact. You will be in a safe and non-judgmental space along with others facing similar challenges, so there is no need to feel ashamed.” The next Stepping Stones course runs over two consecutive weekends, 16-17 & 23-24 June 2018 at Gympie Community Place, from 9:30am to 4:00pm each day. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential. Please contact Family Support Worker Devushka Blake on 0484 000 806 or FDS Head Office on 02 4782 9222. FDS also runs regular Support Group Meetings in Gympie. For 24 hours a day support, call toll free 1300 368 186.

COOROY RAG

Cooroy gymnast wins three Golds at National Titles COOROY gymnast, Finlay Jones, achieved one of his goals this year which was to qualify for his first National Gymnastics Championships. The competition was the culmination of ten years of training and being selected onto the Queensland State Team for the competition at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne. The two week event saw almost 1500 of Australia’s best competitors in the five gym sports vie for national titles. On the first day of the men’s two day competition, Finlay rallied together with his Queensland team mates to win the Level 7 Open Australian team title. The Queenslanders were clear winners of the event beating their rivals by over 7 points. The Cooroy gymnast was instrumental in the win with a day one high score 1.435 in front of the competition and contributing five out of six scores towards the team combined tally.

FOR HIRE 7 DAYS A WEEK

On the second day of their event, gymnasts were looking to bank a second round of consistent competition scores for the prestigious ‘all around’ title and the six individual apparatus championships that were up for grabs. Finlay was able to put together another consistent round sticking five out of six events to win the Level 7 Open Australian Championship with a score of 144.796 over the two days. The second day of competition also sees the apparatus specialists coming forward in each event looking for a win in their pet events. Finlay stepped up to the challenge with another Australian Championship on parallel bars and a close second place on rings missing another win by just .067 of a point. Finlay had two other top ten finishes, with a fourth place on high bar and a seventh place on floor. Finlay works daily with his coach Jeff who was ecstatic at his results. Jeff said, “Finlay has worked hard to achieve the win. He is now seeing the result of his dedication at training.” They will now work together and plan for next year’s event with new and bigger skills as their goal.

Reigning Bathurst Champion to line up for Noosa’s Hill Climb RACING cars from the 1920s through to today are set to tackle the fearsome Noosa Hill Climb over the weekend of June 9 and 10. Star attraction will be reigning Bathurst 1000 champion Luke Youlden, who co-drove with David Reynolds to victory at Mt Panorama last year. Youlden will be tackling the notoriously difficult hill climb in a $150,000 Audi RS4 Avant, which hits 100kmh in just 4.1-seconds, so is sure to be one of the very fastest at Noosa. Youlden will join a long line of notable drivers attracted to the Noosa Hill Climb over its 21 years. Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan, Kevin Bartlett, Dick Johnson, Steve Johnson and Glenn Seaton have all graced the 14 corner, 1.5km track through Tewantin’s State forest starting at Gyndier Dr, Tewantin, off the Noosa to Cooroy Rd. Over 140 racing cars are expected to take the start line, ranging from a near century-old Austin 7 through to a modern Nissan GT-R, Lotus Exige and a range of openwheel hill climb specials. In between is a mix of 1960s Ford Mustangs, Holden Toranas and Commodores, Subaru Impreza WRXs, classic Alfa Romeos and Porsches and even open-wheeler tribute Formula 1, Formula 2 and Indy 500 winners. Cars are divided into numerous classes and launched up Tewantin’s Gyndier Drive at approximately 30-second intervals. The drivers race against the clock up the 1.5-kilometre climb, with spectators able to enjoy the action from grandstands and numerous other vantage points along the route. An open pit lane also gives spectators the chance
