Patches of Cooroy ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ raises $2500

THE quilting and craft group, Patches of Cooroy, held a community Biggest Morning Tea on April 30 at the Cooroy CWA Hall and raised $2500 in support of the Cancer Council. The event was very well attended and many walked away with raffle prizes. The lucky winner of the group’s beautiful hand-made patchwork quilt was Muriel McMullen (pictured far right). A fascinating and entertaining talk was given by Patsy Fayne who was a member of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team in the 1960s and 70s (see more page 2). Last year the group raised $2000 and were inspired to reach a higher tally this year which they achieved with the help of a $500 donation made by current Australian cricket team members. A big thank you and congratulations to Patches of Cooroy and everyone who came to support this very worthy cause.

Patsy Fayne (left) with Marlene Strudwick of Patches of Cooroy PATSY Fayne (nee May) was guest speaker at Patches of Cooroy’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser last week. She regaled her audience with stories about her days as a fast bowler in the Australian Women’s Cricket team in the 1960s and 70s and how different women’s cricket and opting for a career in sport was then, compared to today. When Patsy was bowling them over at the peak of her career, there was no money in sport. The girls had to fund their own trips and uniforms and accommodation was provided by way of billets. She told of sneaky tactics including being plied with Jamaican rum in the West Indies and fattening foods in the UK. The press got away with headlines they would never, and should never, get away with now. Sexist headlines and photos of the girls were common. Patsy is, and was then, of slim build but one English newspaper called her a “fattish” bowler. Patsy said it was originally supposed to say “fastish”, but was changed before it went to print. She spoke of the lack of support when athletes retired and how lucky it is that things are changing now as the transition period of getting back into the ‘real world’ where you find yourself without a career or relationship can be very difficult. There were also many highlights during her sporting career, including an invitation to 10 Downing Street for morning tea, being the first Australian woman to take a wicket at Lords, forming lifelong friendships and meeting many amazing people including Margaret Thatcher. Patsy has donated most of her cricket memorabilia to the Bradman museum.

These students mean business

Alison Rexa from NDSHS and Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank with Year 11 students are ready and excited for ABW 2017 MORE than 260 students at Noosa District State High School students are about the get a taste of life in the corporate business world. It’s all part of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) and its exciting one-week intensive program. Starting on June 16,

the entire Year 11 cohort will experience what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes. Working as a team, students will be running a cafe simulation business and with the help of a business and teacher mentor, discover the variety of

skills needed to be part of a successful business. Through the week, students perform a number of tasks. They’ll form a company of 15 members, each with an assigned role in the running of the company. Students will then review an ABW manual covering the key business areas, make

Cooroy branch manager, Geoff Edwards says the branch is looking forward to providing mentoring support to go along with its financial assistance. “Assisting in the mentoring process during ABW is all about giving the students help where they need it, but it’s mostly about watching the groups apply their great ideas with their energies and talents. I encourage any business owner who hasn’t been to ABW to come along as some of these kids are going to make great employees for some of the coast’s top businesses in years to come,” Geoff said. The ABW program will conclude with an Awards Ceremony at NDSHS to be held on Thursday, 22 June from 7.00 pm. Trade Displays will be open in the main hall from 6.30 pm for families to view the efforts of our students. If you would like to know more about ABW or how you can support the future of the program, contact the ABW program co-ordinator Alison Rexa at NDSHS on 5472 2234.

decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training. This years’ 16 teams must also develop a marketing strategy and mount a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30 second commercial featuring their business. Finally, each team will prepare a written company report explaining decisions made and the outcomes and the impact on their company’s performance and finally, deliver an oral presentation to an audience of business people, teachers, students and parents. It makes for a full week, but will leave each participant with some valuable skills for their careers and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field. Without the support of parents, students and teachers ABW simply wouldn’t be the success it has become, but it’s the support from local businesses that has seen the program develop. One such business is the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Having just committed to sponsoring ABW for another year,

New home for Katie Rose Cottage Ltd

Melanie Primmer and Ian Soutter from McGrath Real Estate with John Gabrielson, General Manager of Katie Rose, Chairperson Carol Raye, volunteer Clytie Glass and MP Glen Elmes

Katie Rose Cottage Ltd has, this week, been handed the keys to a new 4 bedroom facility, set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens in Doonan. Along with the provision of professional palliative care to the community, the facility will also house the administrative base, provide Day Hospice and outreach palliative care services along with counselling services. “A wonderfully generous $1M donation from a local community couple has enabled the purchase of the property. Our new charity, just six months old, is further supported by the generosity of other Sunshine Coast benefactors and donors, and we have been overwhelmed by this generous support, support that will ensure the sustainability of the Hospice well into the future,” said Katie Rose Chairperson Carol Raye. The Katie Rose Cottage opportunity shops in Cooroy, opposite IGA and in Tewantin, in the Atrium in Poinciana Street, are major contributors to the funding required by Katie Rose Cottage to provide

this vital service. A dedicated team of volunteers – supported by enormous community involvement – ensures that the shops are fully stocked with good quality items including Bric a Brac, Clothing, furniture and a myriad of special treasures. “In the next couple of weeks we will be opening a dedicated furniture Op Shop in Noosaville and in the second half of this year we will be searching for other sites on the coast to expand our Op Shops,” said Carol. “There is much to do and we’re very excited about our future, working closely with our community to provide a wonderful caring hospice service. One that the community has shown by its support is truly needed. We thank all our generous supporters and our wonderful volunteers who have worked so hard and share in our success.” For more information please visit the website, which is currently being developed at www.katierosecottage.org.au or for information you can email admin@katierosecottage.org.au

THE Noosa Festival of Water has been a highly successful annual event at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre since 2005 and it’s on again on Sunday June 25, 10am to 3pm. The initial impetus for the Festival was water quality and environmental care around Lake Macdonald, which supplies Noosa’s town water. Today the Festival has evolved to become an annual showcase of our region’s ecological attributes with a primary aim of improving community awareness of how each of us can play a part protecting and preserving our environment in our day to day lives. The Festival provides great opportunities to connect with experts involved with land, water and wildlife management. Kids’ activities have a Biosphere focus, are free and include a fishing clinic, water sports, wildlife exhibits, art activities and boat trips across Lake Macdonald with an opportunity to learn about the Mary River cod breeding program. Each year local artists provide entertainment in the Amphitheatre and attendees can avail themselves of refreshments from food vendors as they walk around the stunning lakeside and Botanic Gardens setting. This year there will be a chance to win a weekend at Peppers Resort, Noosa courtesy of Noosa Tourism. For the early risers there is the Catch and Release Bass Fishing Competition hosted by the Lake Macdonald Fish Stocking group starting at 6.30 am at Mary River Cod Park. Registration forms are available

The Noosa Festival of Water gives a wide range of groups and agencies an opportunity to connect with locals and visitors to our region to generate the interest and commitment to environmental initiatives needed to make a genuine difference. The MRCCC and Noosa Landcare organise the Noosa Festival of Water with a legion of community organisations and volunteers working together behind the scenes to stage the event. The event is supported by Noosa Council through Community Partnership Alliance Signature Event funding. Seqwater, Unitywater and the Cooroy Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank also sponsor the event. news Small business tax breaks and new financial year resolutions

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank WHETHER it’s sitting down with a calculator yourself or gathering paperwork for a visit to our accountant, it going to be that time of year again soon. The next financial year will be another big one in terms of the national and global financial position. So, perhaps it’s time to make your new financial year resolutions? The question is how can we best achieve those and what steps can we take? Firstly, a realistic budget is the foundation block required. It should identify all your expenses, allows for you, your family or your business to have those savings for a rainy day or that unexpected bill and savings for those times you want to do something as a treat. For a lot of Australians, the home mortgage is the major household expense and yet sometimes that is an area that is not reviewed on a regular basis or included in a plan for the year. Why not take this time to do a health check on your mortgage? Why not contact your bank and ask for some time to sit down and review your options? Options such as mortgage offset accounts, changing to a different type of loan, paying extra into your home loan or even just simply changing the way you pay your loan may see a saving to your home loan. It’s also a great time for small businesses with more tax breaks on the cards for the year ahead. With the $20,000 instant asset tax write-off in-

troduced in the 2016 budget being extended for another year until 2018, the federal government is also offering states and territories up to $300 million in exchange for reducing red tape for small businesses. This incentive can be coupled with great rates on Equipment Finance packages, so put that new financial year resolution together and ring your local bank manager. Their advice and input could make your new financial year a happy one. If you would like to know more about any of these services at our Cooroy Community Bank branch or Pomona agency, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Without clean water life on earth is hell!

From Left - Juanita Druce EarlyAct Vice President, Jemma Lang President, Carol Johnston Youth Director and Andrew Aves President Cooroy Rotary, Alex Nelson EarlyAct Secretary and Emma Saunderson Treasurer THE Pomona State School EarlyAct Club presented a cheque for $470 to the Rotary Club of Cooroy for Lifestraws at their school parade on Monday 15 May 2017. EarlyAct is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13 providing young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. “This was an excellent effort by the students who organised fund raising events and collected donations for this wonderful cause. The need for safe drinking water is denied to many people in this world,” said Andrew Aves, Rotary Club President. “Every 15 seconds a child will die as a result of drinking unsafe water.

LifeStraw is a portable water filter that effectively removes all bacteria and parasites responsible for causing common diarrhoeal diseases. LifeStraw requires no electrical power or spare parts and can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean water “EarlyAct engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities,” said Rotary Club of Cooroy Youth Director Carol Johnston. “This initiative by the students at Pomona State School will purchase more than 20 Lifestraws that will convert contaminated water into clean, safe drinking water and helping people who don’t have ready access to safe drinking water”.

Understanding cash flow Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* FIND out why your cash flow could be the secret to better budgeting. Was getting your finances under control one of your New Year’s resolutions? Has it already started to go off the rails? There’s definitely still time to get back on track. Looking first at your cash flow, and what you’re actually spending your money on, could help you manage your finances more effectively, so you can successfully save up for that holiday, home or have some cash set aside for unexpected events. So what exactly is cash flow? Cash flow is a way of measuring how much money is coming into your account and the amount that’s going out at any time. Your cash flow is made up of three key components: • Income includes your salary/wages and/or pension payment, as well as interest from savings accounts, dividends from investments and capital gains from the sale of assets. • Expenses can be fixed or ongoing, such as your rent or home loan payments, utility bills and insurance and one-off or discre-

tionary expenses, such as groceries, entertainment and clothing. • Savings is what you have left over after expenses are subtracted from your income. If your expenses are more than your income, you’ll have a negative cash flow. Better budgeting Once you have an overview of your personal cash flow you can start to develop a budget (or improve an existing one). An effective budget can go a long way towards helping you to achieve your goals. If your cash flow is negative, or you’d like to see your savings increase, you’ll need to look at your expenses and see where adjustments can be made. Adjustments could be as simple as reducing your grocery bills or the amount you spend on dining out. However, depending on your goals, you may need to consider making a larger change. For example, finding a cheaper place to live or cutting down on transport costs. Don’t forget to also look at the income component of your cash flow. Reviewing your income sources can enable you to

identify ways to get your money working harder for you. For example, think about whether you could be getting a higher interest rate on your savings account, a better return on your investments, or even earning more money with a second job or side project. Reviewing your cash flow will give you a great overview of where you currently sit financially. With this knowledge you’ll have more control to budget smarter, better manage your money and help reach your financial goals. Need more help? Please contact us on 07 5447 7740 if you require further assistance managing your cash flow. Metawhat? FOR some time now Cooroy Computers has been a retailer for a brand of laptop called Metabox. Now if you haven’t heard of them before that’s no surprise as you cannot get them in the big stores. Metabox has been around since the early 90’s constructing laptops right here in Australia. What sets them apart from the big brands is attention to detail and quality. All Metabox laptops are made and tested by human beings before being shipped out to customers. The difference here is that care is taken to ensure that all components are handled properly and installed correctly. On top of this, they only use the best quality parts and materials when building their laptops. The end result is a sleek piece of machinery that not only looks nice but runs well too and the best part is you can choose your parts and customise the laptop to what you want. Metabox laptops are tailored to 3 types of people. The first group is of course, gamers. Metabox has a passion to make laptops that exceed expectations for gamers and boy do they deliver. Even the basic model starts with an i7 CPU and GTX1050 graphics card, which is no small feat. All the LCD’s they use are minimum 1920x1080 resolution, which in most laptops is the real let down because you don’t get that crisp image on the screen. So what does this all mean for an everyday kind of person, well that is the second target audience. Whether you use your laptop for business or leisure these machines are fast, like really fast! That i7 CPU combined with a Solid State Drive makes every laptop great for any person who can’t stand waiting for things to load. Now that being said as fast as the laptop is, if your internet connection speed isn’t great websites will still load the same, but being able

to turn your laptop on without having to make a cuppa is still a huge bonus. The last audience for Metabox is professionals. By this I mean a wide range of people including; photographers, video editors, draftsman, architects, 3D designers, animators and so on. Metabox has specific designed machines to suit the various demands that software requires from professionals. The biggest part of this is the workstation graphics cards. While that doesn’t sound all that flash these cards are often more expensive than the top of the line gaming graphics cards because they are designed to meet a different need. That being said we aren’t excluding the hobbyists in the world. For people who do photography as a hobby these laptops come in at very reasonable prices for the amount of power you get and can make using Photoshop or similar software a breeze. At the moment Metabox is having an amazing EOFY sale and giving out great bargains for their laptops. To find out any more information or to see the deals that are on contact William from Cooroy Computers at 1a Garnet Street (opposite the pub) or phone 5442 5522. William is happy to sit down with you and customise a Metabox laptop to suits your needs and price range.

COOROY RAG Cooroy Probus Club THE Probus Club of Cooroy get together regularly to promote fun and friendship. This month the organised outing was to the Pomona Bowls club for morning tea in the clubhouse followed by a couple of hours of bowls, then lunch in the Club’s Bistro, Crack a Jack. The weather was perfect, the company was fantastic, and with a little instruction from Charlie Dewhirst, the local Pomona Bowls Club member and a National Coach, the bowls were less chaotic and a lot of fun. Pictured with some of the players is Charlie providing some valuable instruction on how biased this game is. Congratulations go to Jill Mita for organising such

news Local businesses join forces to empower teen girls

COOROY RAG

WINTER IS COMING

FOR Leah Castle, a move from Adelaide to the Sunshine Coast was more than a lifestyle change but an opportunity to provide a much needed service to local teenage girls in the community. Sharing Our Unique Lives runs weekly SOUL Sista Sessions for girls aged 12-17 years in Cooroy and Forest Glen. SOUL aims to empower girls to be the best version of themselves so they have the confidence and tools to share their unique selves with the world. Even before Miss Castle had left Adelaide she was overwhelmed by the support of the locals with businesses offering sponsorship of venues to get SOUL up and running and other businesses such as Matt Fiddes Martial Arts School offering their time to come and empower the girls through self-defence sessions. “We are so excited to be working alongside local businesses to build a generation of strong, happy young women in our community,” said Ms Castle “The rates of suicide and depression are going through the roof for our young people and I believe together we can make a difference.” A career in child protection as a child and youth worker in residential care, has led Leah to start the group which gives girls a space to come and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

“It’s a circle for all teen girls to come and chat about what’s going on for them at that time, support and connect with other girls their own age, set intentions for the week ahead while discussing topics such as friendship, gratitude and self-care.” Leah said. “I wanted to create a place that girls felt like they belong. In such busy lives these days we have lost the feeling of community.” Together with Matt Fides Martial Arts school, SOUL is putting together a special edition of SOUL Sista’s on Thursday 15th, June 2017 in Cooroy open to all teen girls in the community. We not only want to help the teens feel confident but we also invite them to bring their Mums or a special person in their life to share this event together. In this workshop we will begin with a beautiful gratitude circle and from there the girls and their special person will learn some basic self-defence skills to help them feel safe and empowered in their own bodies. The cost for this workshop will be $12 per teen and their special person and bookings are essential. The weekly SOUL Sista Sessions are meeting every Tuesday at Forest Glen & Thursday’s in Cooroy. dining & entertainment Comedy night at the Imperial Hotel FRIDAY June 9 sees two of Australia’s best stand-up comedians Katie Burch and Chris Wainhouse take to the stage at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Katie Burch is a comedian, mum and wife - with a level of wickedness that is a sheer delight. Katie’s self-deprecating jokes aim at her own life mishaps with her husband and kids, domestic anecdotes so many can relate to.

She is that one-of-a-kind stand up comedian who leaves you wanting just a little bit more each and every time you watch her. Chris Wainhouse is truly a world-class comedian with a crazy mind and cutting-edge wit. Having been around for the better part of two decades, Chris has won national and international recognition with his sidesplitting stand-up performances.

He is the master of hilarious social commentary and brings philosophical subjects such as the creation of the universe, belief systems and discovery under the comic light with sidesplitting effects. Chris was successful in taking out the Grand Final for the Triple J Raw Comedy Competition in Melbourne, earning him a trip to the Edinburgh Comedy Festival. He is a regular head-

line act at many of the world’s most prestigious comedy venues including Melbourne’s Comedy Club, “The Classic” in Auckland and Jongluers in the UK. Chris also regularly headlines in Singapore, Jakarta, Malaysia and Hong Kong a testament to his cultural diversity. Sharp witted and daringly clever, Chris Wainhouse’s fresh brand of comedy is guaranteed to bring any au-

dience undone. Warning: This is an adults only show. Some language and concepts may offend. TICKETS: Pre-sale $18 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811) until 4pm on the day. $25 at the door. Show starts 8pm. Smoke on the Water - a potters’ party THE countdown is on to the Australian Woodfire Ceramics Conference, celebrating the triennial gathering of renowned potters, both local and international. Smoke on the Water – a potters’ party runs from 28 June - 1 July 2017, with the mud trail starting at the conference centre based at the historic Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, and stretching to 11 local small hall exhibitions and out to selected kiln venues across the Cooroy Belli Creek Valley, including the art space “Quixotica”. Artistic Director Rowley Drysdale says, “The 2017 woodfire conference will unite like-minded potters and lovers of all things ceramic by sharing a program steeped in the magic of woodfiring. Activities will range from presentations to panel discussions, artist projects, demonstrations, Pecha Kucha style talks, a maker’s space, firings, exhibitions and networking opportunities,” “All this with great Sunshine Coast Hinterland hospitality featuring music, good food, entertain-

ment and fire, and everybody’s welcome” said Rowley. The program features leading international, national and local figures from the woodfiring cosmos. Invited guests include Kim Se Wan (Korea), Kim Jong Pil (Korea), Shirobey Kobayashi (Japan), Aki Katayama (Japan), Derek Larson (Japan/USA) and Kasumi Ueba (Japan). Smoke on the Water – a potters’ party will include something for everyone interested in ceramic art and will be an outstanding event on the Sunshine Coast’s 2017 cultural calendar. In addition to conference registration to access panel discussions, special events, the big kilns, workshops and demonstrations, there will also be free events which the public is welcome to join. These will be announced in the next few weeks. For more information search www.smokeonthewater2017.com.au or email ccfeinc@gmail.com Story: Jo Searle

SNORING … so many of us do it ….whether we like to admit it or not. But why does it happen? And is there anything you can do about it? Snoring happens when the muscles of your airway relax too much during sleep and vibrate (creating noise) when air you breathe passes in and out. Occasional snoring is experienced by most people at some point in their life, but loud or chronic snoring can disrupt sleep quality, disturb others and may be the tell-tale sign of something more serious requiring treatment. So who is your “typical snorer?” Male; Aged between 30-65 years; Overweight; May have high blood pressure; May be worse with alcohol consumption and with a cold. Some other common causes may be Allergies; Eating too much before bed; Nasal congestion; Consumption of alcohol and/or sleeping pills; Pregnancy; Sleep position (more likely on your back); Swollen adenoids/tonsils, especially in kids; Deformity within the nose. Are there any simple remedies to try and avoid snoring? Avoid sleeping tablets and alcohol; Sleep

on your side rather than your back; nasal congestion (see your pharmacist for advice on nasal sprays and other anti-allergy treatments); Make sure the air in your bedroom in neither too dry nor too humid; External nasal strips (useful in the 5-10% of individuals whose nostrils collapse during inspiration); Weight loss; Quit smoking; A properly fitted mouthguard; Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) – available in many LiveLife pharmacies – this involves treatment of “sleep apnoea” with the use of a compact air pump to deliver a continuous flow of pressurised air via a mask to the patient’s airway; Specialist intervention and surgery (in severe cases). But regardless of what you think may be causing your snoring, if you snore – or if you suspect you snore – consider it a sign that something may not be right. Talk to you pharmacist or your doctor, and get some advice on how to keep you sleeping well, and leading a refreshed, energetic life! Call in to LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy, 26 Maple St, Cooroy.

news The Sporting knee: Osgood Shlatters

COOROY RAG

OSGOOD Shlatters is an overuse injury of the knee which commonly affects children and adolescents. Symptoms usually develop during a growth spurt due to an increase in tension on the tendon that attaches from the kneecap to the shin, placing excess load onto the growth plate (a cartilage point in immature bone) of the shin bone. This condition tends to affects boys more than girls between the ages of 10-15 years old with symptoms typically presenting during activity or exercise and improving with rest. There will be tenderness on the bony prominence of the shin bone with possible swelling and the child may be reluctant to put weight on the affected side resulting in limping or a change in walking pattern. Children who regularly play sports involving repetitive running, jumping and twisting such as soccer, netball and tennis have a higher risk of developing Osgood Shlatters due to the increased load on the knee. Other factors which may cause an onset of symptoms are tightness in the thigh muscles or hamstrings, a history of a previous knee injury, weakness around the hips and pelvis, poor foot posture or non supportive footwear. There can also

be external factors such as a sudden increase in training frequency and intensity and competitions. A physiotherapist is able to diagnose Osgood Shlatters through a detailed review and examination. In some cases, especially if the symptoms have been ongoing for a long period of time Xray imaging may assist with diagnosis but is not essential. Once diagnosis is confirmed it is important to rest from sport and aggravating activities. A physiotherapist is then able to begin a gradual, pain free return to sport program when the child is able to manage. Tapping or bracing is an effective way to offload the tendon and can assist with pain relief. Other treatment techniques include massage, ultrasound therapy, advise on footwear and strengthening and stretching techniques. If your child has been complaining of knee pain with their sport it is important to have them assessed to ensure they have effective treatment and management. The physiotherapists at Hinteractive Physio will be able to assist with an evidence based approach of management and return to sport. Cooinda meeting demands of aging population GYMPIE’S Cooinda Aged Care has over the past few years invested heavily in expanding the facility to meet the demands of an ageing population. A new 50 bed person centered care building was officially opened on the 13th May, 2017. Cooinda management are aware that as well as the investment in facilities and equipment, an investment in staff to work in the facility is critical to providing the level of client support they are aiming for. Cooinda are working with Daisy Learning, an RTO with a reputation for providing a high standard of training, to provide Work Integrated Training in Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing). The training will be delivered onsite at Cooinda with work placement scheduled regularly throughout the course. Students will be able to complete

their required work placement, applying their knowledge and skills throughout the course, which gives improved placement experiences and training outcomes. Finding staff, who meet the vision of any organisation is always difficult. This Work Integrated Training model, not only provides the opportunity for staff to share their knowledge and skills, but also to get to know the students, with a view to employment, throughout the course. For Daisy Learning, being able to provide onsite training, gives trainers the advantage of students being able to relate theory training to real experiences and vice versa. This combined with the input and support of Cooinda staff, will facilitate the best possible training.

THIS year the NRL Round 11 was Beanie Round. On Saturday May 20th the U14s Noosa Pirates donned their beanies and ran onto the field to verse Coolum. They wore them with pride, respect, awareness and support, knowing they had contributed to a worthy cause. Mark Hughes was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013. Over the past 4yrs since his diagnosis he has had overwhelming support from his family, friends and the community. To repay those who helped him, him and his wife

Kirralee set up the Mark Hughes Foundation. They were astounded to discover the appalling brain cancer statistics in Australia and even worse the lack of funding for research. 1. Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease. 2. It also kills more people under the age of 40 in Australia than any other cancer but it receives less then 5% of government cancer research funding. By the boys each buying a beanie, they contributed $340. Every little bit counts.

EVER thought about learning some self-defence? Well here in Cooroy at Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Cooroy they now have a class for ladies only. Learn to defend yourself and get fit in a fun safe environment. The class is for ladies and teens over the age of 14 and is specially designed just for you. “Self-defence is so very important for women in the work place and for teenage girls. Bulling is unfortunately seen far too often in schools and its can destroy girl’s confidence and self-esteem. Our aim is to provide them with some skills to help not only build their confidence but show them how to defend themselves too. A lot of women work late

and so walking to their cars in the dark can be very scary, knowing how to protect yourself is very important. Also, women who are nurses, care workers or any lady who works with the public this is for you too. Knowing what to do in a scary situation can save your life. We aim to provide a fun and safe learning environment for these teens and ladies who would feel uncomfortable in a mixed class.” Says Mrs Habershon. So, ladies if you want to learn to defend yourself and get fit classes are on Monday evenings in the Cooroy State Primary School Hall 6-7.15pm call Mrs Habershon on 1800 840 403 to book your place.

Round two saw Lachine grow in confidence and continue his attack to Green’s body where he again had success and Green was given another standing eight count to recover. The Impact crew will now turn their focus to their next tournament in two weeks at the Beaudesert Showgrounds.
