Cooroy open for business and closed to crime

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss, LNP Candidate for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien, Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President Danielle Taylor made the announcement at the Cooroy Butter Factory last week that Cooroy will receive $200,000 from the Coalition’s Safer Streets Programme to fund 23 CCTV cameras in Cooroy (SEE STORY PAGE 2)

COOROY was all abuzz on Wednesday with a visit by Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and Former Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss and LNP Candidate for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien. They joined representatives from the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Cooroy Police for the announcement of Government funding worth $200,000 for Cooroy CCTV cameras. “Cooroy is open for business and closed for crime. We have a wonderful town and the Cooroy Police work very closely with the community and businesses. This funding will complement the great work that our Cooroy Po-

lice already do and will be strong deterrent to criminals ensuring that Cooroy continues to be a wonderful place to live and work,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “This commitment will deliver 23 CCTV cameras in Cooroy’s CBD, along Maple Street and the industrial park and allow for access by police at the Cooroy Police Station,” Mr O’Brien said. “The Cooroy CCTV cameras network will enable police to monitor and respond to any suspicious activity. “The presence of CCTV cameras also acts as a deterrent to those who are considering breaking the law. Potential offenders will think twice about

possible criminal behaviour if their chances of being caught on camera are high.” Mr Truss said the presence of CCTV cameras helps people to feel safer and more secure in their neighbourhoods. “Whether people are going about their business, shopping, out to dinner with friends or enjoying a night out, CCTV cameras provide an additional layer of security to help protect businesses, residents and their property,” Mr Truss said. The Safer Streets Programme supports communities at the grass roots to help address crime and anti-social behaviour, and boost crime prevention initiatives to keep our

streets safe. “The Federal Coalition Government is delivering on its commitment to prevent crime and improve the safety of our local communities by putting money into affordable, achievable, sensible programmes like our plan for safer streets,” Mr Abbott said. “Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and one of the best ways to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to install CCTV. “The Coalition will continue to reinvest money confiscated from criminals and use it to fund projects that make our streets and communities safer.” In the first funding round, the Safer Streets

Programme provided $19.5 million for specific projects for the installation of CCTV and lighting. This is the second round of funding which will be delivered in two streams. The first stream will fund community safety infrastructure such as CCTV and lighting. CCTV is an effective crime prevention measure that provides significant deterrence to anti-social behaviour and is a valuable investigative tool. The second stream will deliver crime prevention initiatives by supporting the vital work of PCYC and Bluelight organisations. Further information on the Safer Streets Programme is available at www.ag.gov.au

What’s happening with our community hall? WITH local elections done and dusted, the Cooroy Memorial Hall Action Group are eager to see some positive steps taken towards having the hall reopened as soon as possible. Although not visible to the naked eye, matters have still been progressing behind the scenes. Application was made by The Cooroy RSL to Noosa Council for a subdivision of the existing Lot encompassing part of the RSL and Hall buildings, thus enabling release of the Hall portion

only. This application was unsuccessful for a number of reasons. In conjunction with this process, a Structural Engineer was engaged to report on the Hall. This report was released on 15th April 2016. We are pleased to advise the main points from the report as being, “The general condition of this dwelling was good” and “No major structural defects were visible at the time of the inspection”. The following items have been identified

as ‘Essential’ repairs necessary in order to facilitate re-opening of the hall asap. Replacement of the termite damaged rafters to the northern end via erection of scaffold, removal of roof section and reinstate following replacement of rafters as necessary. Remove and replace damaged external cladding to S/W corner of building. Removal of asbestos to the Projection room and the complete removal of the kitchen, including cupboards, wall linings and as-

bestos flooring. At this stage, this section can be safely partitioned off if necessary with new kitchen to be fitted when funds permit. Ideally the long term vision for the hall is to undertake major renovations, however until such time as the Trustee matter is finalised and funding is available we would love to be able to open the hall for use. Following the recent meeting between the Cooroy RSL board and

Noosa Council on 12th May 2016, we look forward to receiving news that will enable us to continue to make progress with our plight. The continued interest and feedback from the community in supporting this cause and wanting to see results is definitely encouraging. Please continue to follow us on Facebook (Cooroy Community Memorial Hall Action Group) and we will keep you up to date as things progress.

Lake Macdonald water level lowered for geotech work Seqwater is temporarily lowering the Lake Macdonald water level this month for geotechnical work as part of the planned dam improvement project. Lowering the water level will enable further geotechnical investigations to be completed, and inform the options for up-

Page 2 - Cooroy Rag, June 8, 2016

grading the dam. Water will be released through a low level outlet valve at a slow, controlled rate to protect water quality and the environment and avoid any downstream flooding. Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said the water level would be lowered to about 80%

over about four weeks if the weather remains fine. “Lowering the water level in dams is a common practice to manage the operation of the dam or carry out maintenance or improvements,” he said. “Seqwater dam operators as well as technical and environmental staff will monitor the water quality

as well as the dam environment during the lowering and will continue to do so after the lowering is complete.” “Water supply to Noosa and the surrounding region will not be impacted by the lowering of Lake Macdonald in the short or medium term. Our water grid allows us

to efficiently move water to where it is needed and deliver a safe, reliable and cost-effective water supply to the South East Queensland region,” he said. The geotechnical work will be conducted over a four week period and will help Seqwater in developing plans to upgrade the dam.

CHILDREN at Tadpoles Cooroy Early Learning Centre are getting back to nature as they set out and explore the great outdoors each week at their very own ‘Bush Kindy’ in the bushlands behind Cooroy State School. The ‘Bush Kindy’ concept was developed by TAFE Queensland East Coast Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care students Louise Cardew and Kellie Handley who are completing their practical training at the Cooroy Centre. “Young children learn through play,” Louise said. “We recently completed subjects in sustainability and innovation and have introduced the ‘Bushy Kindy’ concept to not only put our TAFE training to the test, but also to give the children a better feel for the world around them.” “Nature based learning for early childhood children offers opportunities for children to connect with nature and learn through ongoing investigation and projects

that stimulate thinking and learning in a whole new way.” “Maths and science concepts will be introduced in the ongoing return visits to the bush to build on the children’s existing knowledge and to give them confidence to explore, share ideas and experience a sense of freedom out in the bush,” she said. Tadpoles Cooroy Early Learning Centre Director Wendy Clark is excited by the ‘Bush Kindy’ concept and said permitting student placements has added tremendous value to both her team and to the children’s experience at the Centre. The ‘Bush Kindy’ concept provides both a valuable learning experience for children and allows them to get a greater appreciation of the world around them. COOROY RAG BOUQUETS & B R I C K B AT S

I am still bored out of my socks I saw the two leaders ‘debate’ the other day, Frankly I’ve never seen such a boring display. It wasn’t just tedious, it was confusing as well, Neither of them had any rousing story to tell. I’ve worn out the mute button on my TV set, Sanity and sense I haven’t seen yet. The list of things that they have to fix seems endless, In all of the waffling, the poor public seem to be friendless. I read the other day and it’s true I fear, That the healthy adult male bore, in one calendar year, Can consume his own weight in other people’s patience, Although others may call it public relations! We’ve just reached half way in this boring campaign, So there’s more to come, more electoral pain. The mills of God grind slowly, so the wise men said, But when it comes to action, those mills leave Parliament for dead!

BOUQUETS to the drivers who manage to bravely navigate the Myall / Elm Street intersection. It’s such a dangerous intersection I see a close call there every single week. BRICKBATS - The cement blocks in the carparks out the front of IGA that rip the front bumper off your car. I know they’re there for safety reasons but unless you’re aware of how high they are they get you every time. Sorry just a whinge. BOUQUET to the many, many volunteers in Cooroy and the hinterland who assist in so many areas. Your assistance and time is very much appreciated. THANK YOU!!! NOTE: We had an overprint of the Cooroy Rag last edition so have a lot of newspapers on the verandah if anyone needs them for their garden. Call 5442 6699.

What is capital gains tax?

Saving Money

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

CAPITAL gains tax is what’s due when you sell certain assets and make a profit. Capital gains tax is what you pay when you profit on the sale of certain assets. These could be assets you own or that you’ve inherited. Capital gains tax applies to shares, land and property, unless it’s your primary residence. It may even apply to certain collectibles and personal items depending on what you paid for them. The good news is if you understand the general ins and outs of capital gains tax in Australia, you could reduce what you pay by up to 50% 2 . We break it down in simple terms. The first thing to understand is that capital gains tax actually forms part of your income tax. While it has its own name, it’s not a standalone tax. For example, when you declare any capital gains, which you’ll need to do when you lodge your tax return, any capital gains you’ve received will be looked at as part of your total income for the year. The amount of tax you pay on your income will vary depending

on what income bracket you fall into. In the instance you have a shared asset you need to work out each owner’s individual interest in the asset as this is how capital gains and losses are determined for each party involved. If you make a profit on an asset, there are instances where you won’t be hit with capital gains tax. Capital gains tax generally does not apply to: Assets acquired before 20 September 1985; A property that is your main residence; A car, motorcycle or similar vehicle; Winnings or losses from gambling and prizes. The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has further details as to which assets are subject to capital gains tax and which assets are exempt on its website. Generally, you can calculate your net capital gain by adding up your capital gains over the financial year and then subtracting your capital losses (including any net capital losses from previous years) and any capital gains discounts (or any small business CGT concession you may be entitled to).

Page 6 - Cooroy Rag, June 8, 2016

A capital gain is typically reduced by 50% when an asset has been held for at least 12 months. So, if you sell an asset you’ve owned for less than a year - an investment property or shares in a business for example - the tax bite will be a lot bigger. You must keep records of everything - every transaction, event or circumstance - that may be relevant to working out whether you’ve made a capital gain or loss from an asset for a period of five years. There is no time limit on how long you can carry forward a net capital loss and it can be deducted against capital gains in future years. This could help to reduce the tax you pay in future years and assist any beneficiaries you’re leaving assets to. For more information, speak to your accountant, or contact us on (07) 5447 7740. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 Authorised representatives and credit representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706

FOR many people, the idea of saving money is very difficult. However, it is one of the most important things that you can do in order to prepare for your financial future. At Cooroy Community Bank branch and Pomona agency we often have customers tell us they find it much easier to pay back a debt than to set aside funds for savings. In the next couple of columns I would like to talk about savings…what to save for, why to save and how to save. Let’s start with reasons to save, which will differ in importance depending on your age and stage of life, family and career commitments and short and long term goals. So, in no particular order: 1. Save for a new car – yes, you can apply for finance to purchase a car, either through your bank or the dealer, however this may become a never ending cycle, by the time you finish paying out your loan, you will probably be ready for a new car, and a new loan. Also, you have better bargaining power if you can pay cash. 2. Save for an emergency – life is unpredictable and unexpected events, such as car repairs, medical issues or a job loss may blow out the budget and the credit cards. Experts recommend that you put aside between three and six months of expenses as an emergency fund, however if this is too steep, try to set aside at least $1,000. 3. Save for fun – life can’t be all work, work, work, and it is important to have fun. Whether you fancy a luxury holiday, a trip through Europe or a boat, saving for big ticket luxury items gives you something manageable, and exciting to aim for. After all, you don’t want to have to keep paying for your holiday for years after the tan fades. 4. Save for a deposit on your home – the more you can save prior to the purchase of your new home, the more bargaining power you will have

when it is time to buy. Saving a significant amount toward a deposit may mean you can afford a bigger home, your interest rates may be lower, and you may be able to avoid the expense of Lenders Mortgage Insurance. 5. Save for your education – on average, workers change careers between 3 and 7 times during their lifetime and often this means a return to further education, either to gain new skills in a different area, or for a post-graduate degree in their chosen field. Changes to government policy may mean that further study is exempt from HECS-HELP assistance. 6. Save for retirement – whether years away, or just around the corner, the best time to start saving for your retirement is right now. With the benefits of compounding interest, the sooner you start, the quicker your retirement nest egg will build. Sort out your superannuation accounts, and if possible, try to match your employer’s contributions. Think about talking to a financial advisor to check that you are on the right path. Next time, we’ll talk about how to start saving! To talk more about how you can save money, just call into the branch or phone 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

New French ‘Pop-Up Shop’ A NEW venture is opening in Cooroy, but it won’t be here for long. French & Vintage will be a Pop-Up shop, which means it’s a temporary establishment. Doug and Debra Palmen previously owned Continuum Antiques-VintageRetro in Eumundi, specialising in French and English antiques. But they sold that business, re-branded and started again. In April 2016 they went

on their latest buying trip to Europe, and returned with literally two tonnes of fabulous new finds. “We bought an awful lot of French Art Deco and Semi-Industrial design this time”, says Debra. “And we knew it would look terrific when displayed together, so we wanted to offer it in a Pop-Up shop. It just depended on finding the right location.” Fortunately, the right location was waiting for them

in Cooroy. Pop-Up shops are common in Europe and an increasingly regular sight in Sydney and Melbourne, but there aren’t many on the Sunshine Coast. “The key to a successful Pop-Up shop”, says Debra, “is offering great things that you can’t find elsewhere, and selling them for unbeatable prices. That’s why we travel to France to find our stock – well it’s one of the reasons!” French & Vintage will be open daily from 13 June, 10am – 3pm. But only for a month. “It won’t be a beautifully set up permanent shop, so it will look a bit like a warehouse”, warns Debra, “and you might need to rummage.” But who doesn’t love a good rummage?

“DON’T worry I’ve been a coach for 35 years”, smiled Doug Toms reassuringly from under his cherry red Eumundi Dragons peaked cap. It’s this measured calmness and quiet authority that being the mother of two energetic boys I envy as Doug signs up my sons for the Under 7 team and puts them through their paces at the Eumundi Showgrounds. day training ends with the sun setting on the manicured playing fields of the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club home-ground. Leaving my boys Tom, 7, and Ted, 5, sated, smiling and eager for Saturday’s match. What they don’t know is that I haven’t just signed them up for rugby but for all the things that Doug a founding member of the club, (formed in 2008), a

coach and club president since 2014, and exteacher can teach them. Life skills such as selfdiscipline, resilience, respect for others as well as the determination to try their hardest week-inweek-out for themselves and their mates while having fun. It’s these reasons alongside Doug’s passion and enthusiasm for the game and a desire to impart his knowledge to these young

people that saw Eumundi Dragon Junior Rugby League nominate Doug as an outstanding volunteer to receive a Queensland Day Award on June 6 at the inaugural Noosa Electorate Queensland Day Awards. “There is not a person on the coast in rugby circles who does not know Doug, mainly because of his outstanding character, dedication to the children and hard work ethic”, said Scott Thompson himself a former president, current coach and club committee member. “Doug is the glue that holds our club together. I actually think there have been times that without his involvement the club may have folded. He goes above and beyond daily for the club. Pam his wife also needs a medal for allowing him the time he puts into us,” Scott joked. “Doug Toms thoroughly deserves an award for his hard work and dedication kids, to our club and this sport on the Sunshine Coast”, added Club secretary Margo Sparks.

Ellen Kelly, Ellen Leape and Assunta Easton from the Pomona Pacers THE Pomona Pacers is a Heart Foundation walking group that has been going strong for six years now. We were delighted to be joined recently by the Tewantin Tickers to celebrate our 6th birthday. 14 walkers from the Tewantin Tickers, also a Heart Foundation walking group, joined us for a lovely stroll on the walking trails at the base of Mt Cooroora followed by morning tea at the Pomona Bakery. All up there were 28 walkers making new acquaintances whilst enjoying the beautiful Pomona sunshine, a friendly chat as well as getting their daily exercise. Six years of walking is a tremendous effort and congratulations to all Pomona Pacers who have been involved over the years. It is great to have several founding members still walking with us - including

Ellen Leape, Ellen Kelly, Coral Telford and Assunta Easton who joined in the very early days. Ellen Leape has tallied up over 1300 walks in just six short years – what a remarkable achievement. She is truly an inspiration to everyone to get moving. Of course, no birthday is complete without a cake and the Pomona Bakery did a fine job of producing a beautiful cream sponge – complete with footprints. Many thanks to the Bakery for deftly handling over 30 noisy customers eager for coffee and snacks in addition to their usual morning rush. Also thanks to Bob Ames for being the official photographer on the day. We are very fortunate to have such a skilled photographer associated with our group. It was lovely to meet our neighbouring Heart Foundation walking group and it was also nice to see the Tewantin Tickers browse in our Pomona’s lovely shops as well. The Pomona Pacers walk Monday to Friday (except public holidays) for around 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk pace. We meet in front of the Pomona Community House at 7:00 am. So if you’d like to meet some new friends, get a few walks in and enjoy some social outings we would only be too glad to welcome you. Enquiries to Karen on 0408 652 821.

ONE year ago, Pomona locals didn’t quite know what they were in for. Twelve months later, they haven’t looked back. Last Wednesday, local business owners, shareholders and supporters filled the Pomona Bowls Club with guests, Mayor Tony Wellington, Cr. Ingrid Jackson and Bendigo Bank state manager, Noel Jessup. They were all there to celebrate the first birthday of the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank and it looks to be a local business success story in the making. Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited, Rick Cooper said the agency has come a long way in the past year and looks forward to more of the same. “The agency is growing steadily and our footings of over $12 million is exciting for everyone. As more locals have realised we’re part of Australia’s fifth largest retail banking network and provide full banking services, more have become customers and that’s great to see,” Mr. Cooper said. He said the Cooroy community had already seen the benefits a local banking service can bring, both in terms of easy access to their banking, and the reinvestment of profits into the Noosa hinterland. Now the hope is for the same thing to continue happening in Pomona. “We’re delighted to have provided positive impact to the business community in town and know that it will mean significant positive long term impact if locals continue to show their support. We know there’s great excitement about Pomona having a real say in its own future, and banking with the agency is the town’s opportunity to do just that,” he added. Pomona made it clear in 2015 they wanted a bank of their own. Now standing as Pomona’s sole banking facility, the town is realising the more support the Pomona agency receives, the more support the community receives. “Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money going back into the Noosa hinterland. As one of the agency’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Mr. Cooper concluded. Agencies represent about 20 percent of Bendigo Bank’s retail outlets and the Pomona agency Branch is fully supported by the Cooroy Community Bank branch staff. Manager, Geoff Edwards continues to be based in Cooroy whilst overseeing the Pomona Agency and Customer Relationship Officer, Karl Doss occupies the office in the Pomona Agency during opening hours.

Pomona flood fix finished NOOSA Council is putting the finishing touches on a $1.5 million Pomona flood mitigation project. The Rifle Street works will reduce the severity and frequency of flooding for numerous properties on Rifle and School Streets. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, who recently inspected the work, said the project improved residents’ safety and would provide greater peace of mind when severe weather struck. “It’s terrific to finally see the end result of this project, the need for which came to light when I was first elected to represent Division 12 on the Sunshine Coast Council,” he said. Work saw the road height and drainage channel capacity increased and a new bund wall constructed to divert floodwaters to Cooroora Creek. The Pomona Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Project was a joint initiative of Noosa Council, the Commonwealth Government and the Queensland Government under the 2014-2015 Natural Disaster Resilience Program. Council consulted with the Pomona Flood Reference Group and used flood modelling technology to analyse the

Pomona terrain and develop the Rifle Street fix. “While we can’t control the weather, with the cooperation of all three levels of government we have been able to better protect those whose homes were most at risk,” Cr Wellington said. “My sincere thanks go to the State and Federal Governments for their essential input, to the Pomona residents involved, and to Noosa Council’s expert staff who stitched up the deal and oversaw the works.” Council is currently finishing landscaping at the site. Council, the state and federal governments each provided a third of the cost of the $1.5 million project. It’s the second of three major recent local flood mitigation projects. Work finished last year on a $1.3 million fix for Tewantin’s Daintree estate where flooding inundated more than 40 homes in 2012. This project was also a joint initiative of all three levels of government. “Flood mitigation work near Cooroy’s Ashgrove Drive is being incorporated into the Bruce Highway upgrade at Noosa Council’s request, but gratefully at no expense to Council.”

BOOMERANG Bags is a community driven initiative tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots level. Dedicated schools, community groups, businesses and volunteers get together to make re-useable ‘Boomerang Bags’ using recycled materials as a means to replace plastic bags. Through Boomerang Bags we start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use – one commu-

nity, needle and thread at a time! By getting involved with Boomerang Bags, you are participating in a national movement that celebrates a local grassroots initiative, community building and sustainability. Desire Galton will be hosting a sewing bee on Thursday, June 16 at Lawson Shed in Pomona, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. “The plan is to get rid of plastic bags in the Noosa Shire by providing a free alternative,” says Desire.

HOW to get your Vitamin D when Winter is Coming: As the winter months approach and the days get shorter, there is less opportunity to get sunshine. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says exposure to sunlight is the best way to keep Vitamin D levels up (although it can be found in some foods such egg yolks, liver and fatty fish). Vitamin D is essential for bone health but it can also benefit inflammatory and immune responses. This makes it especially important for managing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions and other chronic illnesses. Jodie explains that the amount of Vitamin D required varies from person to person. ‘For example, obesity, chronic illness, pregnancy and alcohol consumption can change the amount needed for an individual. It can be taken as a supplement, however, sometimes this alone doesn’t work as Vitamin D from supplements is not biologically active. It needs to be converted to an active form (known as Calcitriol) before it works in the body’.

Magnesium is a key ingredient in the conversion, so a low magnesium intake can contribute to Vitamin D deficiency. Good sources of magnesium include: dark leafy greens, almonds, cashews and other nuts, legumes and whole grains. A magnesium supplement can also help. So to keep the winter Vitamin D blues away, Jodie recommends spending some time in the sun. In the middle of the day is best for winter, but stay within skin cancer risk guidelines for the hotter months and use sun protection. And remember to include magnesium rich foods in your diet. Dietary supplements are helpful in some cases, but it’s best to consult a health professional if you are unsure. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. Reduce the risk of bowel cancer

New dentures Repairs Relines Personalised Natural look All Health Funds & Veteran Affairs

Bowel cancer is also called colorectal cancer. It is diagnosed in over 12 500 Australians every year, and represents the second highest number of cancer deaths after lung cancer. Mostly affecting people 50 years of age and over, it can happen in younger people too and is a serious disease. But ,,, if bowel cancer or its precursors (polyps) are diagnosed early, it is often curable!! So what are the causes of bowel cancer and how can you avoid it? Unfortunately, the causes of bowel cancer are not clearly understood. However, we do know that some risk factors make it more likely that a person will develop bowel cancer.

Some of these include: • Getting older – commonly affecting people aged 50 and over • Inheriting one of two uncommon genetic disorders • A personal or strong family history of bowel cancer • Having ulcerative colitis (inflamed colon lining) for more than eight to 10 years • Having a diet high in red and processed meat, drinking too much alcohol and smoking • Being overweight or obese (particularly for men) So what can you do to help reduce your risk of bowel cancer? • Regular screening • Eating a healthy diet, including plenty of vegetables and fruit and only small amounts of animal fat – researchers believe that eating a healthy diet may help to prevent as many as one third of all cancers, including bowel cancer!! • Eating moderate amounts of lean red meat as part of a mixed diet including carbohydrates (breads and cereals), vegetables and fruit, and dairy products • Eating limited amounts of processed meats • Maintaining a healthy body weight

• Exercising regularly • Not smoking or drinking too much alcohol. Following this advice doesn’t mean that you will never get bowel cancer, but it can reduce your risk and has other health benefits too. Did you know that LiveLife pharmacies offer bowel cancer screening for their patients? Bowel Cancer Screening involves a test for bowel cancer in people who do not have any obvious symptoms of the disease and aims to find any polyps or to find cancer early when they are easier to treat and cure. A bowel cancer screening test called a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) can detect these small amounts of blood in your bowel motion. The FOBT looks for blood in your bowel motion, but not for bowel cancer itself. This test is easy to do at home, and involves placing small samples of stool on special cards and sending them to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results are then sent back to you and your doctor. We at LiveLife pharmacies encourage all Australians who are aged 50 and over, who do not have symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer, to undertake bowel cancer screening. Life – let us help you live it!!

Time to take care of you! As women, we often spend many hours during our lifetime looking out for the needs of others. We care for our families, our partners, our children. Often the chaos and busyness of our lives mean that we can forget to look after ourselves. While we may take time to see the dentist or our local GP for ‘health issues’, rarely do we ask for information or advice to explore a vital yet often forgotten area of our life – our sexual health. On Saturday 11th June at the Memorial Hall in Pomona, the Pomona & District Community House is hosting the 2016 Women’s Health Forum, ‘Exploring and Empowering Sexual Health’. So, what is meant by ‘sexual health?’ Simply put, it means taking care of your physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to your sexuality. “Oh honey, I’ve got a headache!” or, “Sweetheart, I’m tired,” can cover a multitude of reasons as to why we – or our partner - don’t want to engage sexually. Sometimes, something just doesn’t feel right with our body; maybe we’re bored; perhaps there are issues within our relationship; or it may be that we really are too tired! Sometimes we may have no idea why we’re not interested or it’s simply too hard to explain what we want, what our expectations are and what works for us. The first presenter will be local GP, Dr Ann Buchan who has made ‘women’s health’ one of her priorities in her practice. Her talk, ‘No Sex Please…We’re Doctors’ will cover the areas relating to the

physical aspects of sexual health. She will talk about the need to regularly check and monitor what’s going with the sex organs including our breasts, ovaries and uterus. She will discuss some of the possible consequences of menopause, and how to avoid the pitfalls. Ann will look at how our genes influence us and how we can maintain good health despite them and she will talk about how diet and exercise impact our sexual health. ‘Take Control of your Sexual Health’ is the message that Pauline Ryeland, otherwise known as the ‘Intimacy Whisperer’, will be presenting. Pauline, who is an ‘Intimacy and Sex Coach Educator’, will be delving into areas such as libido – why it can disappear, what we can do to get it back and how it can be turned up! She will discuss how self-love and self-worth effect our intimate connections and asking, ‘What is sexual energy anyway?’ Pauline will explore ways we can re-spark and reconnect in our intimate relationships through communication and bringing fun and play into our lives. This is a no miss forum! Come along, bring your friends and find out all those things you always wanted to know! Special performance by the hilarious musical comedy duo, the ‘Cherry Ripes’. Proceeds of the event will be donated to the charity, ‘Destiny Rescue’. Time: 6.45pm for 7pm start. Cost $25 per person or $20 each per booking of 8. BYO nibbles. Wine and softdrinks to purchase.

Marlene Strudwick, organiser of the Biggest Morning Tea with guest speaker and poet, John Major

The annual Biggest Morning Tea at the Cooroy CWA, put on by Patches of Cooroy, is fast becoming top of the Cooroy social calendar in May. Much fun and enjoyment was had by the 70 people who attended the function held on Tuesday 31st May. Guest of honour this year was John Major who entertained the crowd with his bush poetry while David led the country sing a long on his squeeze box and lager pole. A sumptuous morning tea of home cooked cakes and slices was provided by the Patches ladies for all to enjoy. This very important occasion, raising funds for cancer research, has been well attended over the years. Thank you Cooroy for the support.

Incorporate exercise into your weekly routine WINTER is the perfect time to seriously think about a healthy lifestyle and the changes you need to make to incorporate exercise into your weekly routine. It’s all about finding the right work for you that is achievable, sustainable and enjoyable. An exercise physiologist can help you find the right time, the right place and the right type of exercise for whatever goals you want to achieve and conditions you want to overcome. Have you ever considered your bone health and how exercise can help? As people age the natural remodelling process of our bones is reduced. Our bone health changes and we are unable to regenerate bone in the same way as when we were young leading to reductions in bone density. With reduction in bone density there is an increase in a risk of fractures. This is something elderly people find hard to overcome. Without any intervention the natural process

is more than likely to continue to regress your bone health and create a steady decline in bone density. After a regular check-up with the doctor it’s not uncommon for a male or female to be discussing conditions such as osteoporosis and osteopenia and how important adding some exercise into their lives can be. Finding the right exercise to combat a reduction in bone density is important as an appropriate program can stabilise bone health and stop any further reductions. Choosing exercises that are specific to the clients areas of concern, level of risk and ability is crucial and combinations of weight bearing, resistance training (body weight, weights, resistance bands), and impact exercise can be used to improve bone health. For more information phone Courtney Mallett – Exercise Physiologist at Advance Physio on 5447 7670.

Combat that dry winter skin THERE is something very a-PEEL-ing happening at Lakeridge Health, Skin and Beauty this Winter. The mornings are becoming much cooler and as a consequence, our skin is the first to feel the effects. Is your skin tight, dry, dull and feeling thirsty? Often a dull complexion may be due to the fine layers of dead cells sitting on the surface. A quality chemical peel when applied by a trained Therapist, who has firstly analyzed your skin, can remove those damaged outer layers and restore the healthy youthful skin underneath. Regular peels work on vastly improving the skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and help pig-

ON 11th June 2016 at the Cooran Hall. Over in the hills west of Noosa, far away from the bustle, is the quaint little town of Cooran. Nestled in one of the many valleys it has an early history which has been rich in activity and community. One of the oldest buildings in the Noosa Shire is the Cooran Memorial School of Arts Hall. In its day the central hub for social gatherings and important meetings, it remains today a pivotal centre for the arts, and community groups. The old hall has seen many upgrades to its’ interior; and now- due to the hard work and diligence of local individuals, boasts a brand new sound & lighting system, and new de-mountable stage. For any who doubt the prudent allocation of grants in the community this has definitely been money wellspent. It is generally known that music & sound play a

significant part in our lives. Travelling along with the history of the hall, and now in to its’ 28th year, is the Cooran Acoustic Night. This iconic little event, run by volunteers, enjoys the magnificent acoustics of the 110 year old hall. Within the aged timber structure, singers, musicians, actors and artists are able to share their talents with the audience. A VERY BIG ‘Thank You’ to the Cooran Memorial School of Arts Inc., for the contribution of their time in obtaining the grant, & ShakeIt-Up Music for giving such a great deal on the sound system. The Cooran Acoustic Night welcomes all acts, and is open to all who wish to perform, from amateurs to professionals. Cooran hall is in King Street, Cooran. Doors open @7pm; be there by 6.30pm to get your name on the blackboard. $4 entry, Kids free. This is an alcohol free event.

Bed 3; Bath 1; Car 11; 132 acres. Offers over $1,295,000. How rare is this property? Very! As it hasn’t been offered to the market since 1970 and, once you inspect, you’ll understand why! Maybe it’s the 132.8 acres of prime land; maybe it’s those mindblowing views that stretch from Mt Cooroora to the Mary Valley and beyond, or maybe it’s the thought of profiting from possible future subdivisions. This magnificent property is truly a one-off, and offers many possibilities for the lucky buyer. North east-facing, and 600ft above sea level, enjoy your own private 4WD driving tracks, hiking and riding paths, with direct access into the National Park. There are five cleared paddocks for cattle or horses, with steel post / timber rail yards; established fruit trees, including nectarine, Bowen mango, grapes, bananas plus a passionfruit vine, and no shortage of water with 14 dams! There is also an excellent investment here, with $30,000 to $40,000 of future millable timber and power poles onsite. You have the choice of living in the original homestead - an immaculate 3-bedroom cottage - or choosing one of the many wonderful home sites, all delivering those breathtaking views. Rounding off the list of inclusions are two large sheds, housing up to 11 vehicles and/or a mix of farm machinery and tractors. With a road frontage of more than 1.5km on Pomona Connection road, and 1.3km of boundary fence with the National Park and the football ground, you can be assured of complete peace and privacy. Yet you are just 5 minutes from the Bruce Highway for easy access north and south. All of this, just 25 minutes from Noosa, Gympie, Nambour, the Mary Valley and the beach. Cooroy boxers take on the World IMPACT Boxing Academy’s rising stars Brock Shelley and Taylah Robertson have left to take on some of the World’s best fighters. Brock and Taylah are part of a Queensland elite team that have travelled to Poland to compete and then to Slovakia to compete. The pair will compete in two tournaments in Poland against some of Poland’s best fighters and then they will travel to Slovakia to compete in a four day International tournament against some of the best boxers in the World. “I am so proud of Brock and Taylah. To be selected to represent Queensland at an Elite International level is a fantastic achievement for them both. Only two weeks ago Taylah won the Australian 57kg Youth Title and now she is on the other side of the world competing

as an elite on the world stage. Brock is no stranger to International competition as he has represented Australia at the World Junior championships in Ukrane in 2013. In the last 6 months Impact Boxing has had athletes compete in Russia twice, Germany and now Poland and Slovakia. To say that this little club from Cooroy is doing big things is an understatement! I cannot wait to see what these kids will achieve in the future. As they say They sky really is the limit,” Coach Mark Evans said.

Bruce Trauer, Josh Butler and Sylvia Posadas THERE is no preferred time of the year to play table tennis. Whatever part the weather plays: enjoying the game of fast moving rallies at the blue tables is the way to keep fit and happy! Recently some of our group members participated in the Sunshine Coast Table Tennis Club’s closed championships. Over two nights some competitive games were played, new friends were made - bringing together the table tennis family of our region. Pomona surprised with the following players taking out first places. Sylvia Posadas – winner of the social category. Josh Butler – winner of the U13 Juniors. Bernhard Trauer – winner of the C level category. Our group would like to extend an invitation to all former and current table tennis enthusiasts to join us at our sessions, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday – from 5 PM onwards. Families and specifically female players of all ages are welcome to play in our Wednesday and Friday sessions. Venue is the sports hall of the Pomona Primary School campus, at 74 Station Street. Further encouragement can be gained by phoning Bernhard on 0418 158 684.

Cooroy lady golfers, Patsy Fayne, Anne Kenzler, Helen Dougherty, Barbara Taylor and Freda Bull try their hand at croquet. THE Probus Club of Cooroy, together with members of the Cooroy Golf Club, ventured down to the Croquet Club at Noosa to try their hand at a new activity. President, Brian Rudd and fellow members extended us a warm welcome, morning tea, an informative chat and a quick lesson. It was then onto the greens and on with the game! Croquet is not as easy as it looks and often brings out the revenge spirit in those who have a competitive nature. It is a game for both mind and body. This first attempt at croquet has left us all wanting

more. A big thank you to Brian and the Noosa Croquet Club for your hospitality. Anyone interested in finding out more about the

Noosa croquet should ring Brian 5447 1890 and enquiries about the Probus Club of Cooroy contact Patsy Fayne 5455 5526.

Ron and Marlene Strudwick, Barbara Taylor, Brian Rudd and Nancy Thom all trying their hand at croquet at the Noosa Croquet Club.

Eumundi dragons on fire EUMUNDI Dragons VS Maleny Bushrangers game was testing at times but we managed to keep them down their end for the entire first half. This was managed by a great line of defence and team effort as well as breaking through Maleny’s defence to come away with 6 tries in the first half and a further 3 in the second. The action packed first half saw two brilliantly delivered tries by Taj-unstoppable. Charlie side stepped up the middle also scoring two tries. A huge thanks to the two St Andrews who twice running the full length of the field with extraordinary speed resulting in three easy helped us out to make up our numbers. Cutters Corner

Back on the Winning Streak THE last 2 weeks have been amazing with the Cutters winning their last 2 games against Beachmere and Yandina. Scores being 32-0 against Beachmere and 58-7 against Yandina. Cutter Cutter Cutter…!!!! The coach, Clinton Lewis, couldn’t be more proud of the boys with the way that they have gelled together and playing as a solid team. It’s not easy having to pick a side each week as all the boys have their own special unique talent and it is great to see how much effort they put into their games when they are on. Mark Woods had a pearler of a game against Yandina @ Gympie, taking out the player of the match. Consistently putting his heart and soul into the game shows out on the field when he runs with that ball as you can see in the photo.

HOME GAME COMING UP - 11TH June We just love playing at home, especially to see so many supporters show up to give the boys all their support. 1st Game is @ 4.30pm – Palmwoods Vs Beachmere and the Home Game is @ 6.00pm with Cutters playing against our friendly rivalry team Mary Valley Stags. It is going to be an awesome game, you won’t want to miss it.
