Munch your way through Eumundi Good times are on the line-up for the free-entry MUNCH festival this Saturday (March 16) with fab food, cool drinks and tasty tunes – all with that Eumundi groove. Originally scheduled for February, the event was cancelled due to the weather warnings associated with Cycle Oma. But organisers assure us that this Saturday’s event will blow you away. From heavenly spring rolls and satay to Mexican tacos, vegan delights to a finger lickin’ BBQ, there’s a global feast to be had at MUNCH. Esteemed Head Chef at The Imperial Hotel Cale Dempsey will take to the microphone as he shares the secrets behind his ever-popular Prawn and Pork Cakes. Cooking demonstration starts at approx. 2.45pm. Foodies attending the festivities are in for some fun with the inaugural ‘Wing Cup’ – a quest to find the ultimate wing sauce! Got a wing sauce that gets rave reviews from your tribe when you dish it up? A recipe you’ve fine-tuned over years of BBQ wing addiction? MUNCH is your chance to share your wing sauce mastery with a discerning panel of judges (and self-confessed wing addicts). To enter, simply bring your wing sauce (in a jar or bottle please – at least 250g is required) to MUNCH and hand it in at the Eumundi Brewery Bar on the day by 3pm – attached to a piece of paper with your name, mobile, email and your special wing sauce name. There’s some great prizes to be won. Musical highlights at MUNCH will include: Jazz Duo - Cameron de la Vega + Miranda Deutsch - Cameron and Miranda have been performing the energetic and nostalgic sounds of Django Reinhard and Gypsy Jazz together for 10 years. In Cameron’s unique and powerful soloing style you will hear his passion for Flamenco and Latin music, while Miranda adds her strong version of La Pompe (rhythm) and soloing style honed while living in Paris and performing alongside some of the best in the Gypsy Jazz genre. PALOMINO III - Palomino III take up the grittier, rowdier spaces of traditional Roots, Rockabilly and Americana styles. Churning out a relentlessly great sound with a driving, stripped back approach to their much loved roots backgrounds. Think ‘Outlaw meets Country Sweetheart.’ With extensive live gigs and festivals under their belts along Australia’s East Coast and from alternate Roots Rockabilly and Nostalgia festivals both in Australia and Internationally, PALOMINO III brings an energetic addition to the flourishing Australian Roots Rockabilly and Americana stage. GIAN - Gian got a head start musically in many ways, as the youngest muso in a family committed to the musical way of life. With a biological head start in hardwiring connections between heart and mind, Gian’s passion for music is requited in the obvious connection he shares with his lyrics, melodies, instruments and audiences. Accomplished on the piano, guitar, ukulele, harmonica and loop, Gian busies himself writing and creating new material, forever crusading to extend his sound into a greater visual and audible realm. Gian is quickly building momentum as a fresh, well-known talent, exciting audiences with his soulful melodies and memorable performances. Expect some quality street entertainers at MUNCH too – interactive and sure to put a smile on your dial! The Imperial Hotel’s FREE courtesy bus will be operating on the day from 5pm, travelling to Eumundi, Belli Park, Cooroy, Doonan, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, and Verrierdale. Phone Gary on 0467 414 171 to book.

Fusion Festival puts down roots To celebrate the opening of the 2019 Fusion Festival – 500 free plants will be handed out to the local community. The free trees will be provided by Fiducian Financial Advisers and Noosa Landcare for mum’s for Mother’s Day. Fusion Chair, Jim Ennis, said the free trees were an idea which stemmed from the grove of trees in Apex Park which were planted by students from Cooroy State School 20 years ago. “These trees are now quite established, and we felt it was a nice synergy to distribute free trees this year, given that it is the first year the Cooroy Fusion Festival is being held in Apex Park.” Jim said it also supported the Festival’s approach of being more environmentally focussed, including waste and plastic free. Scott McKeown, Principal Advisor from Fiducian Financial Services Noosa Hinterland said as a new business in town and a first time Fusion Festival sponsor he was excited to be part of such a fantastic community event. “We have opened our

new office in Emerald Street and are putting down roots of our own. Supporting the planting of more trees in local gardens and the community is a project we feel strongly about and are pleased to support this initiative with Noosa Landcare.” Cooroy Fusion Festival is on Saturday 11 May and includes a host of Apex Park activities such as market, community and food stalls; the Bendigo Bank Entertainment marquee with an entertainment lineup full of great local musicians; skate and BMX demonstrations; the Cooroy Supa IGA Tastes of the Hinterland marquee where you can sample the produce of the Sunshine Coast; appearances by Noosa Art’s Theatre’s Tweedledum and Tweedledee characters; and the Noosa Pengari Steiner School sponsored Geckoes Wildlife Show. The Butter Factory Arts Centre will have arty activities including the Clay Shed Australian Pottery Throw Down, hand building for children and adults and a free photo booth sponsored by Wythes Real Estate. there are a range of programs including Makerspace activities, entertainment and an animal farm sponsored by Cooroy Country Menswear & Jeanery. The Great Noosa Trail Walk has become an iconic annual event for the Queensland Queen’s Birthday weekend on 5 to 7 October. Over 50% of tickets have sold for the three day walk that provides just 150 walkers and volunteer guides the chance to wander through the beautiful Noosa Hinterland. Early bird prices are only available until the end of March and then the price increases, if there are any tickets left. Participants experience some of the very best of Noosa Hinterland’s nature, culture and communities. The series of Noosa Trails that have

been chosen traverse Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin through farmlands, natural forests and atop spectacular lookouts. Walkers undertake the walk at their own pace with time to enjoy the landscape, local cafes, antique shops and attractions encountered on route. A reasonable level of walking fitness is required, but this is not a race, plenty of time is allowed to complete each day’s walk. Trail guides on the route provide assistance and information about the history and landscape. The Great Noosa Trail Walk will be co-presented in 2019 by the Cooroy

Future Group Inc. and the National Trust of Australia (Queensland). The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) have come on-board as the presenting partner of the event this year to further their commitment to protecting, conserving and celebrating Queensland’s environmental heritage. As well as guides, the Great Noosa Trail Walk offers a shuttle service that transports luggage and camping gear to each evening’s campsite, freeing up walkers so they can really enjoy their time. Tickets for the three-day walk are $249 under the early bird which finishes on

Procession of walkers on Steamy Hill near Kin Kin 31 March. This event has sold out in most years so don’t delay! The fee includes camping fees and some meals as well as luggage transportation and a one-year complimentary, introductory National

Trust membership to all participants which entitles you to access to over 800 National Trust properties worldwide. For more information and bookings head to www.greatnoosa trailwalk.com.au.

Noosa Landcare and the Cooroy Golf Club came together last week for a working bee, planting along the banks of the Ferrells Creek that runs through the Cooroy Golf Course. Though rain was set in for the morning the club volunteers put in an amazing effort, planting over 450 grasses and sedges. This planting is part of a 2000 plant revegetation project for the Cooroy Community Golf Course in partnership with Seqwater and Noosa Landcare under the ‘Lake Macdonald Water Supply Catchment Protection Program’. The Water Supply Catchment Protection Program is a joint initiative between Seqwater and Noosa & District Landcare to better protect water quality in the Lake Macdonald catchment. I was in Cooroy again on the weekend for Clean Up Australia Day and took part in the clean up around the parks, CBD and creek. Whilst it’s disappointing to find some of the things that people discard in our natural environment, it is heartening to see community volunteers coming together and taking action to clean up our areas. It is reported that there were record numbers of volunteers across the Sunshine Coast this year. Insurance. It remains one of the hottest topics at workplaces and around hinterland dinner tables. Whatever your current situation, it’s time to take stock – particularly your home and what is likely your second most valuable material asset, your car. As we have witnessed over the past summer, the power of Mother Nature can be unleashed no matter what the weather conditions. Fire, storms and flood had a lot of Queenslanders checking insurance policies to check that we’re covered for the unthinkable. The danger in all this is to become complacent about insurance and ignore the signs of protecting yourself, your business, your car and home. This continues to leave many coast residents jaded and wary of what their insurance covers them for and perhaps apprehensive about taking out policies for themselves of their business. Now, more than ever, it’s time to remember there is more to an insurance policy than just having a cheap premium. If you have a current policy, make sure you do take those extra few minutes to check what you’re covered for, and if in any way it’s unclear to you, call and ask for clarification on anything you’re unsure of. It would seem there has never been a better time for us all to think about how we can better protect our own assets. It’s also important to make sure we have a quality product and the sum insured is sufficient to replace any loss. If new items have been purchased for the home or business such as furniture or electrical items, remember to increase the

contents amount. Don’t forget all the fixed items that are classed as buildings, especially if you have recently completed improvements or renovations. Special valuables may need to be listed individually and a valuation held as evidence. It is also recommended to keep photos of your special items. So take time out to spend just a few minutes checking your insurance policies or look into purchasing one. If you would like to discuss anything to do with your personal insurance needs or those for your home or business please contact us on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or on email at simone.flavelle@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

People with Purpose in our community It runs in the family

Stan Chandler’s description of himself as a “fourth-generation organic farmer” provides a strong clue as to what he finds important in life: farming and family. Stan grew up on a family farm back in the days of Rhodesia and has many fond memories of how his close-knit family stuck together through the good and the bad (drought, floods, war!) “We all had to work together as a team to survive,” Stan recalls. He also remembers the selfless, generous nature of his parents who were always willing to help their fellow man. His father, a respected man in the community, demonstrated on many occasions the importance of giving as opposed to receiving. Although he would never expect anything in return, Stan remembers how the investment his father made in other people’s lives would often pay unexpected dividends further down the track. “You reap what you sow,” his dad would say. The war in Rhodesia eventually forced Stan’s family to leave and they ended up going to Canada, where they spent 13 years on a farm near

N E OP

Calgary. However, working in temperatures of 16ºC and below, having their farm buried in snow for 9 months was enough to make them want to “find the sun again!” Australia seemed like the perfect destination and they ended up settling in the Cooroy area. In 2006, Stan was taken on by Noosa District State High School as an Agricultural assistant and that role has now grown since the school was gifted a farm at Newspaper Hill Road by Queensland Education. Stan now works as assistant/farm manager on the property which has become the school’s Belli Park campus – Mimburri. It’s a multi-functional role that appears to suit Stan down to the ground. On the one hand Stan and his colleague Andrew Mahony are busy building infrastructure on the farm such as campsites facilities, outdoor kitchens and a lot more. This is all to facilitate the school’s outdoor education plans. The students are already attending camps out there, including team-building/leadership exercises, writing camps and the YABBA program. “For the students, these days are completely different to normal days in the classroom,” says Stan, adding that it is “such a pleasure to see them thriving in this outdoor environment.” The other part of Stan’s job is, of course, farming. The school is raising feeder steers on the farm so there is plenty of pasture preparation and fencing work to be done. The farm is also working closely with a number of other community groups which is reaping huge rewards. These include everything from a major revegetation programme (9000 trees planted last year with help from MRCCC and Landcare), to anthropology studies on the property (with Queensland University and the traditional owners of the land). These are all activities that the students can get involved in. For Stan, it’s all about building relationships and making connections. “Not only are we forging connections with com-

COOROORA SCREENS & BLINDS munity groups and our school, but the farm is also a place where the students can connect with the environment, their teachers and each other,” says Stan. “It’s about getting back to basics and working alongside others to achieve goals.” Stan also wants to emphasise that he couldn’t do any of what he does without the support he gets from his family, colleagues and the executive team at Noosa District State High School. Farming, family, and helping others to thrive. It sounds like Stan’s dad would approve. A Cooroy Pest Control community initiative

Arthur Henry Vonhoff (November 7, 1928 - January 9, 2019)

Arthur Henry Vonhoff was born at Babinda, North Queensland, the eldest of 10 children and spent his childhood in several country towns where his father served as a policeman and later as a dairy and grain farmer. Arthur worked on the family farm in Clifton for several years from the age of 17. In 1953, Arthur decided to join the Qld Police Force and was sworn in on February 4, 1954. After being sworn in, he worked the beat and in Brisbane, one of his first duties was during the Royal visit in 1954. Arthur’s first transfer from Roma Street was to

Cloncurry. He then worked at Malbon as acting Sergeant and was transferred to Boulia at which centre Arthur met his future wife Phyllis Grimshaw at a country dance. Arthur was in time transferred to Townsville and then Kidston in far north Queensland. He was supplied with patrol horses to cover a very big area and an aboriginal tracker with his wife and family to oversee and cook for. Arthur and his tracker were often away for days, sometimes weeks at a time to check on any cattle thieving that might be taking place. Phyllis ran the Post Office which was joined on to the

police residence. Kidston Police Station was on the banks of the Copperfield River where they saw many floods. It was also Arthur’s job to clear the dirt aerodrome, from anthills and grazing cattle, before any small planes landed, mainly the Royal Flying Doctor Service from Cairns. There was also a large Flying Doctor’s Kit at the Police Station so Arthur could give injections. He would be instructed by a doctor at Cairns Base Hospital on what to do. In December 1964, Arthur and his family transferred to Eumundi Police Station where they lived in the police house beside the Eumundi State School for nearly 10 years. This was situated on the then Bruce Highway, so it was very busy. The Vonhoffs needed a hand on their first day in Eumundi as the removalist van failed to show up. Local community hearts Colin and Jean Courtenay lent them beds. Arthur was a well-respected solo Eumundi community policeman who put a lot of time and effort into policing his area. He spent a lot of time patrolling the highway up the

range heading towards Cooroy. Even to this day, Eumundi and Cooroy locals recount stories of Arthur’s firm but fair treatment of drivers doing the wrong thing on the Bruce Highway. Arthur loved a chat and telling stories and jokes and was able to speak to anyone. Everyone knew Arthur. One story the family tells is whilst on a trip to Italy, Arthur and Phyllis visited the Vatican and Arthur went missing. Phyllis immediately thought “Oh, Arthur’s off chatting to someone”. Low and behold, she looked up to see Arthur chatting to the Pope. It was at this point a couple of people standing nearby exclaimed “Who’s that” Who’s that up there with Arthur?”. Arthur is especially remembered for his leadership as the first chairman of the Eumundi District Rural Fire Brigade. Arthur also spent many years on the Eumundi School P&C Committee and helping the Valdora area to set up their brigade. Arthur resigned from the Police Force in May 1971 after 18 years of invaluable service and then ventured into real estate and running

a family farm. Arthur and Phyllis purchased a 200 acre property on Cash Road, Eumundi. They sold off blocks and kept 100 acres. Most weekends were spent working the property. Around 1984 Arthur and Phyllis bought a 25 acre piece of land outside of Eumundi, on a hill, on the Eumundi-Noosa Road. Once again, Arthur was thought of highly, due to his honesty and thoroughness in real estate. In time Arthur retired from real estate and the couple sold the house and land to pursue ‘grey nomad’ tripping and overseas travelling before settling in Cooroy. In 2008, after some health issues, they decided to downsize and move into Hibiscus Reitrement Village in Tewantin and as care needs dictated, Arthur spent the last of his 90 years at Carramar Nursing home supported by Phyllis, their three daughters, Sharon, Debra and Susan and their families. Arthur will be remembered as an exceptionally community minded member of the Eumundi area. His contribution is very much appreciated and will not be forgotten.

Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical & Historical Research Group

For twenty years a dedicated core membership of the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group worked tirelessly to accumulate the funds to build their Heritage Centre at 17 Emerald St, Cooroy. It was opened in May 2017 by the Mayor of Noosa Shire, Tony Wellington. The Centre not only has an extensive library but also up to date computers for research and a spacious research and lecture area. In recognition of this magnificent achievement, the President of the Royal Historical Society of Qld., Stephen Sheaffe will be presenting their Centenary Award to the Group on Saturday 9th March at 1:00pm. The RHSQ Centenary Medal is awarded to those who, in the opinion of the Council of the Society, have contributed exceptionally to the history and heritage of Queensland. The Group’s Secretary Julie Kinloch said, “to be awarded this Centenary Medal is a great honour for us and a recognition of the hard work and dedication of all members of the Group in creating a building that recognises and curates family history together with the history of the Cooroy and Noosa Shire community”.

Construction to start on Kenilworth Designer Dunny

Artist impression – final design for the Isaac Moore Park Iconic Amenities Building An iconic entry statement for Kenilworth in the form of a distinct, artistically designed building that incorporates public amenities within the recreation area of Isaac Moore Park - will soon welcome visitors to the town with construction starting this month. The community initiated project was conceived as part of a design competition known as the Kenilworth Designer Dunny and received entries from around Australia and the world. The winning entry, entitled ‘Canistrum’, was designed by Maleny architectural illustrator and

animator, Michael Lennie. Council has since worked with Mr Lennie and project architects Mode, to develop construction plans to fulfil Michael’s vision and meet the project’s budget. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson has championed the $600,000 project from its inception and was a member of the competition judging panel. “‘Canistrum’ serves a dual purpose of being a striking architectural feature and a public amenities facility,’ Cr Rogerson said “It will attract interest in, and visitors to, Kenilworth while delivering the community’s wishes for public toilets within Isaac Moore Park “This project is the result of successful collaboration between community and council and a great example of thinking outside the box when delivering public buildings in rural communities. “‘Canistrum’ demonstrates the depth of commitment and passion we all have for this healthy, smart and creative region.” The project will be completed by late 2019 and is funded through council’s 2018-19 $370 million Capital Works Program.

Volunteering is a Work of Heart

The Kindness Club would like you to meet a local lady who has been sharing kindness with the children at Cooroy State School for 16 years! Kindness Club members Kyla, Maddie And Maya interviewed long time school volunteer, Eileen: Maddie: Why did you want to help the children? Eileen: I like working with little kids, they are so much fun. They are like substitute grandchildren. Instead of one or two grandchildren, I have 20 plus every year! Kyla: How does it feel to volunteer with all the kids? Eileen: It feels great. Sometimes if you’re feeling a little low, they make you feel happy again. They give me hugs and I give them hugs back! Maya: Why do you work with Preps? Eileen: I started working in Special Education but was asked to help out with the preps one day. I’ve been there ever since. I love the hilarious things they say!

Page 10 - Cooroy Rag, March 13, 2019

Kyla, Maddie and Maya, who are now in Grade 5, all have special memories of Eileen. Maddie said “I remember when I was in Prep and I saw Eileen walking around, and I really liked seeing her smile” Maya said “I still have a purple scarf Eileen made for me in Preps” Kyla shared “Eileen would hug me and make me feel better when I was sad”. Eileen has touched many hearts throughout her 16 years of volunteering and continues to do so. Eileen told the girls “I like doing kind things for other people because if you can put a smile on someone’s face it shows them that you care about them.” Thank you for being so kind Eileen! You make the world a better place! Do you know of someone doing kind things in our community? We would love to hear about them! Please contact us at The Kindness Club, c/- P.O Box 816, Cooroy or email Wendy at thekindnessclub@outlook.com.

Tadpoles community helps farming family in need Tadpoles Cooroy held a morning tea recently to celebrate a fundraising initiative a group of Lifelong Learning services participated in by supporting a farming family. “In November last year, a family in our community, the Ussing family, shared a story with us of the struggles they were experiencing at their family farm, a 3000 acre property in Barraba, Northern New South Wales,” said Cooroy Centre Manager Dani Vickery. “We saw photos and heard stories of how Archer and Elsie were heading down to the farm on the weekends to help handfeed the animals and saw the heartbreak as the family truly struggled to survive. We knew we had to act. “So, we reached out to our team of Lifelong Learning centres and had an amazing response! “We hosted fundraising efforts and events from the Sunshine Coast to

Hervey Bay, all the way up to Gladstone and Rockhampton. Our teams appealed to our community to reach out and lend a helping hand wherever they could,” said Dani. Dani thanked all the families at all the Centres who contributed their time and money enable a cheque for $5528.10 to be presented to the Ussing family.

Thank you to the Centres and to the teams that participated from Bambini Sunshine Beach, Bambini Peregian Springs, Early Learning Centre Gympie South, Aussie Kindies Torquay, Aussie Kindies Granville, Bambini Boyne Island, Riverstone Rise Early Learning Journey, Milestones Allenstown, Mile-

stones Norman Gardens, Milestones Frenchville and of course the team here at Tadpoles Cooroy. “As early childhood educators we are so connected to our communities, so when someone we know is going through tough times, we will always go above and beyond to do whatever we can to help,” she said.

Get yourself organised so you can be in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday 22 March when the fabulous Blues Arcadia take to the stage, kicking off their Carnival Of Fools national tour. They will be supported by folk/ country/blues songwriter and musician Danny Widdicombe. Combining the legendary soul of the Stax and Motown era with the burning heat and power of the Chicago and Memphis blues, Blues Arcadia deliver an uninhibited oldfashioned soul stomp revival. Their raucous live shows are establishing them as one of Australia’s most electrifying blues/soul outfits with standout performances at festivals including Woodford Folk Festival, Gympie Muster, Thredbo Blues Festival and Blues On Broadbeach. Debuting in 2016 with an eclectic self-titled EP that reached #2 in the Australian Blues and Roots Airplay Charts, they picked up a 2017 Australian Blues Music Award for Best New Talent and an Australian Roots Music Award nomination. Remedy, their 2017 single was one of

Australian Community Radio’s top ten most played tracks on release and was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. With collaborators and partners-in-crime Jeremy Klysz (bass), Parmis Rose (keys) and Casper Hall (drums) the songwriting partnership between Chris Harvey (guitar) and Alan Boyle (vocals) continues to go from strength to strength. Their new full-length album ‘Carnival Of Fools’ pushes the boundaries of their unique dirty-soul sound even further, capturing all the passion and excitement of their live shows. Danny Widdicombe is a songwriter, singer, session guitarist, musical director, pedal steel devotee and amateur astronomer. He is proudly based in Brisbane and has released four solo albums, won the coveted GW McLennan Memorial Fellowship and also a Qld Music award. Danny is a member of three time ARIA Award nominated bluegrass supergroup The Wilson Pickers, collaborates with the modern jazz band Trichotomy, plays regularly with his band The Honey

Blues Arcadia Sliders and is also a member of the iconic Brisbane band The Go-Betweens. You can also catch Danny playing lead guitar or pedal steel for the likes of Bernard Fanning, Tim Rogers, Shane Nicholson and many others. Danny recently released an album of ambient electronic mu-

dining & entertainment Five Star performers at Cooroy RSL Each Friday night, Cooroy RSL offer up another fantastically talented performer to entertain their members and guests. This Friday is no different with what is bound to be another 5 star performance from Fiona O’Shea and The Passenger who will be taking to the stage from 6.30pm. From foot stomping to heart stopping, Fiona O’Shea writes with passion about love, living and everyday things. Travelling the road between small towns and big cities where words sock you in the heart, melodies explode and you catch yourself singing along. Her performance and vocal style has been compared to Queensland weather, one minute you’re sipping tea on the front verandah, the next you’re in the middle of an exhilarat-

ing summer storm. Growing up on the land, now living on the Sunshine Coast, Australia elements of O’Shea’s lifestyle are evident in her music. Audiences can feel the authenticity of her heart, see the stars in the sky, hear the surf rolling in and smell the camp fire wood burning. You can catch this five star performer at Cooroy RSL on Friday 15th March. It’s a free show, so why not book a table for dinner and make a night of it! Local disability support charity Sunshine Butterflies, is now offering Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) sessions with a qualified therapist, for people living with a disability at their base in Cooroibah. A first for disability services in the region, the one-on-one therapy offers tailored therapy sessions with their friendly farm animals, conducted by qualified Animal-Assisted Therapist Madeleine Flynn, who has a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, Masters in Environmental Science (Animal Behaviour/Ecology), plus a Certificate 3 in Dog Training/Behaviour. She will be assisted by equine specialist Sally Clay, who is a qualified carer with a Certificate III in Community Care, Parelli Natural Horsemanship Level 1 & 2 qualifications, plus a Certificate in Agriculture and Dairy. People with a disability often respond to animals, in ways they find difficult with people. Animal-Assisted Therapy is a great way to deliver therapy for those that find it difficult to open up to people. The benefits are endless and the results, often, outstanding.

Many people find it easier to form a relationship with an animal, developing empathy and a rapport with the animal very quickly. This tendency to bond with an animal is the basis of Animal-Assisted Therapy. Cuddling a duckling, collecting eggs, feeding the ducks, grooming a miniature cow or sheep, or walking a goat, it is a great way to deliver therapy. It relaxes the patient, allowing them to drop their inhibitions and open up more with the therapist. Learning to care for animals can help to develop empathy and a sense of responsibility and caring among those may not have experienced that themselves. In the case of equine-assisted therapy specifically, horses are very sensitive to human behaviour and respond to subtle changes in a person’s behaviour or mood. This feedback helps the person and the horse to work together to achieve their goals. Sunshine Butterflies beautiful 5-acre peaceful oasis at Cooroibah provides the perfect environment to deliver these therapy services. For more information, or to book a session, call 07 5470 2830.

Living healthier longer SPM Law recently held a presentation on ‘Living healthier longer’ where Professor Derek Richard from QUT’s Cancer and Ageing Research Program (CARP) spoke about his research into finding a cure for cancer. The audience was left invigorated and optimistic about the future of cancer research. CARP’s revolutionary research goals are to develop therapeutics that can stop cancers before they start. Professor Richard explained that the researchers at CARP have discovered a “super protein” which cancer depends on to survive and grow. The CARP team believe they can create a drug to kill this protein and in doing so kill the cancer at the same time. The protein was discovered in one of

the most extreme environments on earth in a volcano in Iceland. Professor Richard’s team were doing research to find out how a tiny ancient organism (called Archae) that lived in boiling sulphuric acid pools could possibly manage to survive. Their research revealed one particular protein that protected the Archae from damage. Remarkably, they then found the same protein in humans! The audience heard how Derek and his team are working on understanding exactly how this protein functions and are developing new drugs to target its function with the aim to bring these drugs to treat patients within the next few years. This same protein is also linked to other proteins important in ageing. Exciting experiments and research are continuing and there is a lot to look forward to. Andrew Markert, Estate Lawyer from SPM Law followed Professor Richard and discussed the importance of estate planning. With researchers estimating only 48% of people having valid wills it was a topic of great interest. He also talked about bequests and the importance of them being

L-R Andrew Markert, Professor Derek Richard and Paul Bone. done properly. If you would more information on organising your succession planning or Professor Richard’s research please contact Andrew or Suzzanne at SPM Law on 5440 4800.

Giving ‘the stork’ a helping hand Have you been trying for a baby month after month? Do you know your body well enough to know why? Maple St Acupuncture can deliver the balance for your body to deliver a birth. We live in world where diet, lifestyle, distress and a host of other environmental factors including wifi technology all have a negative impact on our health and reproductive health. There are many factors that affect fertility in both men and women, but luckily at Maple St there are also many ways to increase fertility. Ancient traditional medicines, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Ayurveda have always understood that strong reproductive health creates strong healthy offspring. Nature replicates the quality of parental health in its offspring for your future child to inherit which are the foundations to Amy’s “Conscious Conception” principles that she integrates in all of her fertility patients. As such, these traditional systems have specialised in ‘fertility’ therapies that supercharge and balance your body in preparation to conceive and birth your baby. Low

fertility can be a sign that your physiology needs an overhaul. Any number of organ systems could be playing a part in lowering your ability to conceive. Even structural misalignment can place a strain on your organs and impair the natural flow of vital nutrients and life force throughout your body.At Maple St Acupuncture we have a renowned range of yummy ‘baby making’ therapies than can increase sperm count and egg viability, improve whole organ system health, enhance the flow of life force (chi, qi, prana), reduce emotional and physiological stress and restore the body to optimal alignment. Our masterful “baby whisperer” Amy Rhodes (Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine) and members of her team, Brett Riley (Osteopathy) and Jaime Hind (ZenThai Shiatsu) can work with you in collaboration or individually, to restore your body to balance and ensure that you and your partner are in the best shape possible to start a healthy family. Book in a free 15 minute consultation with Amy today to see how your family can grow. Phone 5442 5526.

Are being ignored by your partner? New research reveals the truth behind ‘selective hearing’ Do you think your partner has ‘selective hearing’? Sometimes we might feel like our partner is choosing not to listen, but the reality is, in many cases, they just can’t hear you. New research by Australian Hearing reveals that 2.7 million Aussies believe they are regularly ignored because their partner or parent has a hearing loss. And this ‘domestic deafness’ is impacting relationships, especially for married couples and Generation X-ers. To combat the issue, Australian Hearing is urging Australians to take part in their Big Aussie

Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, March 13, 2019

Hearing Check, which kicks off during Hearing Awareness Week (March 3 – 9) and runs till April 12, 2019. The idea of our partners and loved ones having ‘selective hearing’ might not come as a surprise to some, but there is a serious side to this. What might be a surprise, is that it could be as a result of undiagnosed hearing problems. And a simple hearing test can reveal that. Cooroy residents can join the Big Aussie Hearing Check with a free 15 minute hearing health check with Australian Hearing at Amcal Cooroy Pharmacy on March 28 between 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Keep your body happy and healthy every day Here are some important dietary tips from your LiveLife Pharacist to keep your engine running: • Don’t set unrealistic goals and starve yourself. Make changes slowly such as adding a salad to your meal or switching from butter to cholesterol free oil when cooking. If you skip meals, you may find you eat more when you do eat and this may lead to a larger stomach capacity! • Reduce portion size – use smaller plates at home, order entrée size when dining out or split a dish with a friend. Meat, fish and chicken should be the size of the palm of your hand. • Create new eating habits –Eat with others and NOT in front of TV, take time to chew your food as it can take a few minutes for your brain to recognize you’re full. Ask yourself if you are really hungry and try having a glass of water before your start your meal. Use a small fork; it takes longer to eat, therefore the “full” signal occurs before we finish our meal. • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it will give your metabolism a kick-start for the day. • Eat 3 healthy meals daily, with small additional snacks in between to keep energy levels up and boost the metabolism. Some examples of good “snacks” include raw nuts/seeds, fresh/dried fruit, low-fat yoghurt & vegetable sticks with low fat dip. • Fill up on fruit and vegetables – these are the foundation of a healthy diet and should be in every meal. Aim for at least 5 portions per day. • Avoid fruit juice and canned fruit as they have high amounts of sugar. • Water is a vital part of a healthy diet. It helps flush out waste products and toxins. • Try to eat HEALTHY carbohydrates as they provide longer-lasting energy and keep you fuller for longer as they are digested slowly. These include whole-grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, brown rice and wholemeal pasta. • Try to avoid unhealthy carbohydrates such as white flour, sugar and rice; these are digested

quickly and cause a rapid spike in energy and blood sugar levels that don’t last. • Dietary fibre is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system, and makes you feel fuller for longer. Good sources of fibre are beans, fruit and oat products. • Include good sources of healthy fats in the form of omega-3 as they are needed to nourish the brain and heart. Sources include salmon, avocados, nuts and seeds. • Reduce or limit saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found primarily in animal sources (red meat and whole milk dairy products) and trans fats and found in margarines, chips, biscuits, snack food, fried foods, and other processed foods. • Protein is important as it gives us energy and is the basic building block for our growth and energy. • Limit your sugar consumption. Sugar causes rapid spikes in energy that don’t last. Avoid sugary drinks (e.g. Cola drinks) as they can contain about 10 teaspoons of sugar. • Salt should be used sparingly (no more than 4 grams of salt daily — i.e. 1600mg sodium). This will help to avoid fluid retention and bloating and can also decrease blood pressure. Canned soups and frozen meals contain hidden salts that surpass the recommended daily allowance. • Avoid alcohol –contains lots of calories and puts strain on your liver. And don’t forget to include some fun exercise into your day! Exercise boosts the metabolism and allows for more calories to be burnt. It is recommended that exercise is undertaken 5 days a week and for a duration of 30-60 minutes. The Australian Heart Foundation recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on all or most days of the week. This can be accumulated in bouts of 10 minutes or more if more convenient. Exercise can be aerobic (walking, swimming, running, riding, jogging, skipping, hiking etc) or anaerobic (weight training or sprinting).

Body Bliss’ facials to fight acne Bad skin can hit at any time not just in the teenage years. Any hormonal changes including pregnancy, menopause or high stress times can cause an outbreak of acne or even just a few blemishes. While some prescribed medications can help with skin problems, they often have side effects. Over the counter acne spot treatments are quite harsh and can burn the skin, leaving it permanently scarred. The girls at Body Bliss have extensive experience helping to clear up problem skin. Everything from teenage acne to hormonal older skin types can benefit from a Specialised Spa Treatment. Waterlily’s phytonutrient spa facial is excellent for teenage and cystic acne problematic skins. A salon only treatment de-

signed to rebalance, strengthen and heal the most troubled skin types. Acne and blemishes are decongested with powerful anti-bacterial botanicals to combat excess oil, blackheads, spots and combination skins. A purifying treatment to equalise oil while hydrating and revitalising the overall complexion. Skin is left calmed, soothed, strengthened and more able to handle the stresses of life. Tara from Body Bliss is offering a complimentary diagnosis to find out what’s happening with your skin. She is also offering a March Special for a Problem Skin Facial that normally costs $55 for $40 and includes a bonus relaxing hand massage. Call Tara at Body Bliss on 0416 276 225.

You will want them working for you! The RateMyAgent Cooroy Real Estate Agent of the Year (2018), Michelle Vercoe, has joined the dynamic team at Noosa4Sale. Previously with Dowling & Neylan, Michelle is now the Noosa Hinterland Sales Specialist for Noosa4Sale, working alongside principal, Alex Harris. We asked Alex why she hired Michelle, and not one of the many other agents in the area. “Michelle is a perfect fit for Noosa4Sale,” says Alex, “because we take client service and acting in the best interests of the client, very seriously.” “What I seek in my staff is a commitment to achieving client goals, ethical behaviour and good old fashioned honesty. Michelle’s client testimonials are evidence of her sharing these same values,” she says. But Alex saw this first-hand when Lake Macdonald client Elke Emele appointed Michelle Vercoe as joint exclusive agent in the sale of her horse property. “We worked together so well. I saw how hard she worked for the client, how she performed under pressure, how well she negotiated. And I thought then, I want her on my team,” Alex said. Michelle is based in Cooroy, sharing space with Cooroy’s Rambling Rose florist at 6 Diamond Street. A long-time local agent, Michelle started her successful career in rural/residential sales and land development in Bungendore and Queanbeyan NSW in 1999. In 2003 Michelle moved to Cooroy, establishing herself as one of the most respected and trusted real estate agents in the Noosa Hinterland. As a competitive horse rider in New Zealand in her youth, her love of horses and rural properties remain. Michelle’s primary sales areas are Cooroy,

Michelle Vercoe Cooroy Mountain, Lake Macdonald, Black Mountain, Pomona, Cooran, Doonan, Tinbeerwah, Pinbarren and Eumundi. With Alex’s marketing skills and database of premium buyers, and Michelle Vercoe’s proven track record in rural and residential sales, Noosa4Sale is a true force in Noosa Hinterland real estate sales. There could not be more that a seller would want, except to have them working for you! Contact Alex Harris alex@noosa4sale.com.au 0412635274 or Michelle Vercoe on 0408 949 890.
