Cooroy CWA celebrates 90 years of service IT is with great pride the members of Q.C.W.A. Cooroy Branch will celebrate 90 years of service in the community. On March 27, 1927, Mrs Germain Napier visited Cooroy to meet and address the members of “The Town Guide” with a view to form a Branch of the “Countrywomen’s Association”. This enthusiastic band of women realised that to form a Branch, they would be able to further the

work which they were now involved in, helping the unfortunate and assisting local projects. It was therefore resolved Q.C.W.A. Cooroy Branch would become a reality. Some very well known names appear in the list of Foundation Members. The meetings were held in the small room attached to the Memorial Hall. These pioneer women left no stone unturned to help this Branch prosper. The advent of World War 11 the Cooroy Q.C.W.A. adopted the activities of the Australian Comfort Fund and threw their weight behind the war effort. In 1932 a Younger Set was formed with 17 members. Together with the parent Branch the Younger Set undertook to furnish a room at the Seaside Cottage at Tewantin. In 1948 a link was formed with Whitfield W.I. Dover and this stills remains today with Mrs Joan Boyce being our correspondent. The Branch grew from strength to strength and the members began to think about a home of their own. In 1953 they were granted a portion of Re-

serve for Recreation. This piece of land, in conjunction with a lease of land from Railway, was a beginning of a venture to realise their ambitions to have their own building. Many functions were held and caterings of all kinds, were undertaken to raise their quota, so they could obtain a bank loan. The ladies liquidated the bank loan four years later. On 5th October 1956 Deputy State President Mrs Arnies performed the stump capping and on Saturday 8th December 1956 Division President Miss May Hooper declared the hall open. Since then two extensions have been made to the building. In 1985 the building was completely bricked and aluminium windows replaced the old castments. They received a grant and had the kitchen up graded. The hall today is an asset to the Community, being used by many organisations and the public. Rent free to many others for meetings and the elderly gatherings. Over the years the spirit has prevailed and Cooroy Branch have persisted in offering as-

sistance in cases of hardship and distress, floods, fires and tornados whether local, interstate, or South Pacific neighbours. It has also supported Cooroy State School for over 70 years in Leadership Prizes for year 7 (now being year 6) and formed an emergency panel to help mothers and children in need. It has helped Red Cross in their venture of providing a respite room, where relatives could relax when a loved one was seriously ill. In 1977 one of the Association’s greatest aims was to provide a cardiophone and Humicrib for our local hospital. The luncheons at Christmas for the Senior Citizens and the formation of the Cooroy Kindergarten, are but a few of the successes. A Drinking Fountain commemorates the contribution of the Branch to our town on their 60th Birthday. “Labours have been and sometimes arduous, but we have been rewarded in many ways,” said Treasurer and long-time member Wendy Bebbington. “In 2013 we purchased the back portion of land

from Q-Rail and are now looking at purchasing the Health Reserve land in front of their building.” “On this day it would be a tribute to the foresight of the Foundation Members that the Cooroy CWA can enjoy the sanctity of their own hall and all the amenities which they have today as a fitting and lasting memorial to their dedication and love for others. “The Branch today is still strong as it was 90 years ago, has the same ideals, caring, working for local projects, betterment of women and children, especially those people who are less fortunate than ourselves and with God’s help we will continue this important work for many more years,” said Wendy. “We are a happy group of ladies, work well together and enjoy the friendship. “We would love to welcome other ladies to join our Branch. We meet the first Wednesday of the month -Morning Tea 930am, meeting starts 10am.” For more information phone Wendy on 54476140.

Cooroy Fusion calls for sponsors CIRCLE your calendars folks, the annual Cooroy Fusion Festival will be held on Saturday 13 May 2017 at the Lower Mill Precinct. Each year, the volunteer organising committee seem to pull bigger and better rabbits out of the hat making this free community event one of the highlights of the Cooroy events calendar. They’ve just opened up the sponsorship program and urging sponsors to get on board quickly to ensure they get maximum benefit from the program. “Cooroy Fusion Festival is a great community event and our sponsorship packages are very popular because it’s an event that sponsors see as providing a real benefit to Cooroy plus the sponsorship packages are really attractive. Sponsors get great exposure from the event but they also get a few perks like

invites to our functions and advertising on the digital screen in the lead up to the event,” said chairman of the Fusion organising committee, Chris Bell. Organised by the Cooroy Future Group Inc, Cooroy Fusion is a free one-day festival showcasing the best of the Noosa Hinterland and including Cooroy Library, Butter Factory Arts Centre, Noosa District Orchid Society, Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative and Cooroora Woodworkers plus local food, crafts, arts and entertainment galore! There is something for all ages and tastes! Local businesses have already jumped at the chance to be involved with confirmed festival partners including Noosa Council providing funds through the community grants program and Cooroy Community Bank

Branch of Bendigo Bank sponsoring the entertainment tent which is again set to have a full day of fantastic performers and shows to keep the entire family entertained. Platinum sponsors already on board include Greenwood Grove and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce; Gold Sponsors include Suttons Cleaning Service, Wimmers Soft Drinks, Raine and Horne, John Madills and Gelignite Jacks and taking up Silver Sponsorship are Chapmans Auto Repairs and McDermott Aviation. There are lots more opportunities available! Sponsorship opportunities can be viewed on the website at www.cooroyfusionfestival.com.au or email sponsor co-ordinator Peter Smith on sponsors@cooroyfusionfestival.com.au.

Geckoes Wildlife back by popular demand THE Fusion Festival is going to be just as wild as ever this year thanks to sponsors, Greenwood Grove who are sponsoring a Geckoes Wildlife show and display. “We’ve had the Geckoes Wildlife show for the last few years and it is always one of the highlights. Thanks to Greenwood Grove’s sponsorship we will have a stage show and a display with the opportunity to get up close and personal to some wonderful wildlife,” explained Chris Bell, Chairperson of Cooroy Fusion committee. The Geckoes Wildlife team have a wide range of specialist skills and

knowledge in the environmental area such as endangered species, fauna friendly backyards and wildlife corridors so it is great fun to see the animals but it’s also a valuable learning experience for all ages! “It’s quite apt that Greenwood Grove are sponsoring the wildlife show because the green corridor that borders the festival site and runs along Cooroy Creek shares a border with Greenwood Grove. This green corridor is a natural wildlife corridor and it’s great to see the developers of Greenwood Grove reinforcing this wildlife message,” said Chris.

Making a plan for Noosa Botanic Gardens NOOSA Botanic Gardens are among Noosa Shire’s most scenic attractions, drawing more than 70,000 visitors annually. At nearly 30 years old, the gardens are due for a new master plan. The project to develop the Noosa Botanic Gardens Master Plan begins this month with a survey. Mayor Tony Wellington said: “The Noosa Botanic Gardens are one of Noosa’s semi-hidden treasures. “Gracing the shores of Lake Macdonald, the Gardens are much-loved by walkers, picnic partakers, photographers and the horticulturally inclined. “In developing a new master plan for the site, we would love to have residents’ thoughts on the future and function of our

beautiful Botanic Gardens.” The Plan will cover facilities and uses, as well as the overarching vision for the facility. Before the Gardens were developed, the site was an unofficial dumping ground. Over time, thanks to the efforts of community volunteers, it was converted into picturesque gardens. “Community members have volunteered much time and energy over many years, in a successful collaboration with Noosa Council,” says Council’s Parks and Natural Areas Coordinator Sara Cooke. “The Noosa Botanic Gardens now contribute to environmental conservation by providing both sanctuary and a seed

bank for thousands of varieties of plants. “These plants range from every-day garden varieties to rare, exotic and even historically significant plants and trees. One such is the Heritage-listed Norfolk Island Pine tree.” The Gardens offer a variety of activities including scenic and guided walks, picnic and BBQ facilities and specialised garden areas. The public can also hire sections of the Gardens as well as the amphitheatre. These have been used for many concerts, weddings and other events. The Noosa Botanic Gardens Master Plan will be a culmination of 30 years of hard work. “The survey is the first step in the planning process. Noosa residents

Call for artists and designers to share their beery best for new Eumundi Brewery THE iconic Imperial Hotel in Eumundi is inviting artists and designers to get creative and submit their ideas for a logo for the new Eumundi Brewery, along with illustrations for labels for three craft beers in the pipeline for when the brewery doors open later this year. Brewmaster Chuck Hahn says the beers will be named Eumundi Lager, Eumundi Summer Ale, and Eumundi Ginger Pale, with the chosen artwork to be used as inspiration for beer label design and tap badges. “The Imperial Hotel is already a colourful creative hub that nurtures and supports the local artistic community both musically and visually,” says Chuck. “It simply breathes visual art

- from beer garden murals and painted ceilings and doors to locally made furniture and sculptural art pieces”. “We want that creativity to shine in the artwork aligned with the new Eumundi Brewery.” “It is important to note that while we are seeking four designs – for the Brewery logo and three beer designs – artists are welcome to submit just one design or as many as they like,” Chuck says. “We’ll be judging the artworks for each brew separately, so we may end up with four different artists selected for creating the inspiration for the logo and three different beer labels.” “It’s imperative that the designs reflect the

DURING March Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Cooroy. This work is part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them prior to replacing the meter. The contractors will be in Unitywater-branded vehicles and carry ID cards. Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a Works Completed card in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. This work is part of Unitywater’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and providing a reliable and safe water supply for its community. The artists’ designs and biographies will also be showcased in new Eumundi Brewery. For further details regarding the artwork brief and specifications, please visit www.imperialhoteleumundi.com.au. Time lurches on

In old age don’t count the days, count the memories

Old Father Time again has turned another page, And I have reached hopefully a respectable old age. I have had a full and enjoyable life, Supported and loved by a wonderful wife. I cherish my family, they have made me proud, Few men were ever as richly endowed. I am blessed with the most treasured of friends, a godsend in every way, With them I have laughed and loved and cheekily have enjoyed my days. I am nearing the end now, but I am not concerned, If I have lived a good life, I only pray it was truly earned. Life was made for love and laughter, so the poet sings, And remember that true friendship, is love without its wings.

If you are unlucky enough not to know Mr Dunstan personally, you would know him from his very thoughtprovoking poems published in the Rag each fortnight. One of the most positive people you will ever meet, Jim’s only concession to aging is his reluctance to buy green bananas. Much love Jim!

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS AN unfortunate incident occurred in Cooroy last Tuesday morning. Calls to the newspaper and police reported that someone was driving around town dragging a dead calf behind his vehicle. People were up-in-arms and traumatised. Rumours swirled around town but the local dairy farmer involved would like to set the record straight. What happened was that a local farm hand, who’d been working since 3am that morning on a dairy property off Tewantin-Cooroy Road, had retreived a dead calf (that had died from natural causes) and was towing it to be buried on the farm. Tired and hungry after the end of his shift he forgot to turn in at the animal burial ground and drove Cooroy to grab some breakfast. He would sincerely like to apologise to those who witnessed the incident and offer his assurances that it was indeed an accident. Another rumour we’d like to put to rest is that the work on the footpath outside Cooroy IGA will reduce car spaces. We have been advised that this is not the case. They are just leveling the path. Brickbats and Bouquets are supplied by the members of the community and not necessarily the views of the editor or staff of the Cooroy Rag

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IF you don’t have a nest egg saved up or an equity partner, then you may need to borrow to finance your purchase. That’s when it’s time to call your local banker. Your branch will need key financial information about the business, including profitability, cash flow, sales forecasts and growth potential. Your business banker will look for a sound business with healthy cash flow to ensure you can repay the loan. You’ll need some equity in your business by investing your own money. And you’ll usually need to provide security for the loan, such as a residential property, business assets or other assets, like a share portfolio. What you’ll need • A full tax return for the business for the last financial year. • Details of your qualifications and any previous experience in running a business. • Information about your personal assets and liabilities. • Details about the equity you plan to invest in the business. • Depending on your experience and the profitability of the business, you may also need to put together forecasts of expected profit and loss and cash flow for the first two years. Pitfalls to avoid • Leaving it too late. It can take time for your banker to assess the proposal. Leave yourself time to put your application together and secure finance before you need to sign on the dotted line. • Too little financial information. Your banker needs all the key numbers to make a decision. Cutting corners on your application could mean you end up gathering more information later. • Not borrowing enough. A lack of money to keep the business going is a common cause of business failure. You need to ensure you have enough capital to feed your business from day to day, without starving it of cash flow.

Avenues in aged care Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* APPROACHING the aged care discussion can be difficult for everyone involved. However, starting the conversation earlier on in life could broaden your loved one’s options and help ensure their wishes are met. There’s a chance you or someone close to you may need some form of care and daily living assistance later on in life. And when the time comes to discuss the options, it’ll be something that needs to be managed with sensitivity. With a lot of information to sift through and the conversation sometimes a tricky one to approach, we’ve put together some information to make navigating aged care easier for you and your family. Some statistics Australian’s use of aged care services is receiving more attention today and will continue to as our population ages. Findings from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia show: • The likelihood of a person over age 65 requiring residential aged care in their lifetime is 54 per cent for females and 37 per cent for males • More than 50 per cent of people over age 45 have previously, or are currently, dealing with aged care services on someone’s behalf or for themselves • The total cost of aged care in Australia is projected to reach around $290 billion by 2055. The discussion Making the decision to have a discussion is the first step. So if you’re in the situation where you need to approach the topic of aged care with a loved one, it’s better to do this sooner rather than later. It may not be easy though—it’s fairly normal for people to resist this conversation. It may even be people’s sons or daughters

that are resisting having the conversation with their parents who are in need of aged care. There is commonly a fear that if aged care is talked about, it will inevitably happen. That’s why it’s a good idea to think about this as a series of conversations. And remember, in most cases, your loved one will be able to describe their wishes and will want you to take these wishes seriously. Some other things worth considering when approaching the topic include: • Be deliberate about the time and place for these discussions • Do other family members need to be included? • Whether paperwork is accessible and in order • Whether third parties, like the family doctor, could help by offering their perspective. Options for aged care Some of the different types of aged care options available are: • Help in the home • After-hospital (transition) care • Respite care, which assists the primary carer • Residential aged care (full service residences where ongoing care and support is provided). Each has an eligibility criteria and an assessment process which can be organised through the government’s My Aged Care service. If you’ve settled on the help-at-home option, you can search for providers who deliver a co-ordinated package of services. After-hospital care can be provided in your own home or in a ‘live-in’ setting for 12 to 18 weeks. As far as respite care services go, there are a few types you can look into. If the best option is residential aged care,

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

it’s a good idea to research and visit a number of residences yourself or with your family member so you can find the right place in terms of location, services and activities. The Aged Care Home Finder can help with this process. How much will it cost? The cost for after-hospital care or respite care will depend on the level of care needed, and for how long. The fees for residential aged care or an athome-care package can vary quite a bit and will depend on income and assets as assessed by the Department of Human Services (Centrelink) or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. With a residential aged care place, there may be one-off payments (or deposits), as well as ongoing fees for care, accommodation and daily living expenses. If you or your loved one is a self-funded retiree, it’s a good idea to seek an income assessment shortly before commencing an athome-care package or entering residential aged care. If the assessment isn’t completed, maximum fees and charges may be applied. The government’s Home Care fee estimator and Residential Care fee estimator can help. In the meantime, if aged care is a topic you’re going to approach with a loved one in the near future, we hope our insights have been of some assistance to you and your family. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. COOROY RAG Team work - From Little things big things grow CHARITY starts at home and the Rotary Club of Cooroy is donating the net proceeds of their April and May IGA Sausage Sizzles to the Keison Wheelchair Appeal. Keison has been diagnosed with SMA type 2, a spinal muscular atrophy condition that affects the muscles. It is characterised primarily by progressive muscle weakness that develops in children aged between 7 and 18 months. Come to our next BBQ outside the Cooroy IGA on 01 April to learn more. “Many hands make light work and our members are working in conjunction with our Rotary cluster clubs (Noosa, Noosa Heads and Eumundi) to raise funds. Children affected by SMA type 2 can sit without support; however they cannot stand or walk making a wheelchair a necessity,” says Andrew Aves, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy. Over the years our team have been working hard fundraising for projects in both in our local community and internationally and we try to focus on youth projects. The

Rotary Club of Cooroy is now teamed with six Australian Rotary Clubs and six Nepalese Rotary Clubs to implement a teacher training programme in Nepal. “The project is for 3 Year Teacher Training at the Tatopani Resource Centre, Myagdi District, Nepal 300 Kms North East of Kathmandu and this week we received the good news that an application for a Rotary Foundation Global grant has been successful. “The program has been developed by the Australian Himalayan Foundation and REED (Rural Education and Environment Development a Nepal Government endorsed NGO). Our aim is to help one of the poorest countries in the world to lift rural teacher training standards and enabe the children of Nepal to advance from the basic primary level, said Past President, Linda Morrell. FIRST prize in the main raffle at the Cooroora Wood & Craft Show 2017 is a solid wood Victorian rocking horse. Club members crafted the horse from solid timbers - Beech, Kauri Pine and Hoop Pine. The frame is Silky Oak. The horse is finished in dapple grey, Her mane and tail are blonde horse hair and her tack – saddle, reins and stirrups are tan colour leather. Her vision is enhanced with realistic glass eyes. The construction is very labour intensive which accounts for the value of $4000. The two fine jewellery boxes for 2nd and 3rd prizes were also crafted by club members. The show now in its 28th year is independently run by the Cooroora Woodworkers Club to showcase the skills and work of regional woodworking clubs and schools . The entries in the competitions which are always of a very high standard will be on display. The show will be held at the club in the Lowermill Precinct in Cooroy on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May in co-operation with the Cooroy Fusion Festival The raffle is a traditional feature of the show and raises much needed funds. Rocking horses have always been popular prizes especially to grand-

parents and grand-kids. Tickets are now on sale at $2 each at the Club and at jump-up street sites throughout Noosa Shire. The winning ticket will be drawn at the show on Saturday 13th May around 3pm. Many traditional woodworking skills are in danger of being lost or forgotten. Woodworking clubs help to keep the skills alive as can be seen in the work of these enthusiastic and skilled craftsmen.

Humble Stage Big Talent

TGIF: Celebrate Fridays @ The Hub THE Hub at Opal Street Cooroy has kicked off their weekly celebration, that marks the end of the working week, ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ (T.G.I.F.) and it has been a great success. The Urban Wood fired Pizza van has relocated to the front of the Hub on Fridays from 5pm to 8 pm, where you can order a pizza and set up a picnic rug on the greens with your family for a great night of games and entertainment. Or just grab a pizza or one of their family packs to takeaway. The Bowling greens have been swamped with kids running around having a great time, with organized games available for the under 12s and very social bowls for everyone else. These activities have become trendy at clubs along the Brisbane River as lawn bowls are finding fresh interest with younger people. If anyone has yet to try Urban handcrafted woodfired pizza they are missing out on a taste sensation, with organic sourdough bases, the freshest, chemical and

spray free ingredients, naturally farmed and wood smoked meats, they are definitely worthy of their ‘clean street food’ tag. Gourmet pizzas and family deals with gluten and vegan options are available. Ron and his staff at the hub are always fabulous hosts, and TGIF shows off their welcoming, friendly and fun service. They are opening the bar from 4.30 to 9.30 offering some great deals on craft beers, cocktails and wines to help their guests unwind after a busy week. Currently the Hub is featuring Jamie-Lee Griffiths, a Gympie S.H.S. graduate who is now on a music scholarship at Queensland University. Jamie-Lee’s solo guitar performances are well known at local gigs. So come along and tap your toes, feast on delicious pizza straight from the woodfired oven, and enjoy an inexpensive family oriented way to meet with friends, wrap up the week and still have the kids in bed at a reasonable hour.

Indian classical music recital THE music of India is coming to the Sunshine Coast! A feature event is to be held on Sunday 19th March, in the Coast hinterland, at Cooran Hall Cooran. Raasa is the musical partnership of Peter Davidian and David Fernandez. The duo performs classical Indian music for Sitar and Tabla, having played together for over 16 years. 1925 Queenslander on 2 lots Here is an interesting story of a very special local home. The current owners have enjoyed this property for over 55 years and have watched Cooran develop into a lovely country community. Originally there was three pubs in Cooran back when the area was a thriving centre for timber cutters, dairies and small crops. Now it’s a lifestyle property option with larger blocks with town services and a nice village with post office, shops, Lic restaurant and sporting venues. The primary school is highly regarded by local families and life is good in Cooran. This particular house is one of the tidiest and well-kept Queenslander homes you will find. The large home has 5 bedrooms , (which included two large sleep outs) VJ walls, carpeted living areas, and underneath you will find beautiful wide floorboards. Over the years the owners have replaced the iron roof, electrical wiring and stumps. The large double yard has great gardens and backs onto a small farm. The opportunity for an astute buyer to subdivide and sell one of the blocks (stca) may make this a very afford-

able package, or better still a great superannuation nest egg. If you love Queenslanders and want to buy one to add your touches, without having to take on a major reno, this property is impossible to beat, and will not disappoint. Price: $550,000. Call Paul Bielby of Team Hinterland on 0437 346 256 to arrange your inspection.

Style and elegance with views Beds 5; Baths 2; Toilets 2; Car 2; Price $895,000. Nestled in the neighbourly community of Forest Acres Drive, this superior full timber home, with dual accommodation, will leave very little to be desired. The complimentary high ceilings, polished timber floors, square set cornices and neutral modern tones make for a very stylish home. If the spectacular views on entry, aren’t enough to sell it, then the incredible dual accommodation options will. Ocean views are made accessible through the floor to ceiling bi fold doors that provide a relaxed flow between the indoor and outdoor living areas. Enjoy the spectacular view from the facility packed kitchen, LG, dishwasher, gas cooktop, electric oven, breakfast bar, two serveries out to the huge, undercover timber deck. A tranquil master houses both a large walk

in wardrobe and en-suite with floor to ceiling tiles. The four other great sized bedrooms, like the rest of the home, boast ducted air and fans. The office is a tuck-away and is within close proximity of the large and stylish main bathroom. Venture downstairs to find three bed, 1 bath fully self-contained granny flat. With its own outdoor entertaining area, and ocean views it’s more like its own, gorgeous house than extra accommodation! Contact Robyn Kildey 0414 425,350, Countryside Realty.

Leanne’s fight for survival LEANNE Nicholas (32) is a wife to husband Shayne, and mother to 3-year-old daughter Jessica. In March 2015 their world fell apart. With her then 17-month-old daughter in her arms Leanne was told, “there is a complex, ill-defined mass in your upper abdomen and innumerable nodules on your lungs. We can’t be sure but it looks like cancer.” “Holding my little girl in my arms I felt the world crumble around me, I held Jessica close and tried to infuse her with a lifetime of love, something I have endeavoured to do multiple times a day since then,” says Leanne. After a lengthy series of biopsies and tests it was finally confirmed that Leanne had Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastases in her lungs.

Balancing mood MENTAL health disorders are a part of life for many of us and yet so few of us want to talk about it. Whilst serious mental health issues are rare, most people will experience feelings of depression or other symptoms from time to time. Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, says there are many triggers such as stress, poor health, trauma, or simply changes in life circumstances. Depression can be like a fire smouldering in your brain and without the appropriate support, this fire can get out of control. Inflammation is not just the hot, painful swelling you see and feel when you sprain your ankle. Those same markers of inflammation that increase when you have an injury, can also be present in your brain and body with depression. Addressing this inflammation can be an important aspect of treatment. Jodie says it is important that treatment is addressed in a multifaceted approach with appropriate nutrition, adopting a healthy lifestyle and developing a positive mind. Exercise can drastically improve brain function and mood. In particular, aerobic exercise (cardio) is known to de-

crease stress hormones. Running, cycling, swimming, local sports club, dancing in your lounge room - find whatever works for you. Exercising in a group or with a friend also adds a social benefit to improving mental well-being. There are a number of herbs and nutrients that have been traditionally used to improve mental health. Your natural healthcare practitioner can work with you to develop holistic strategies that include herbs, nutrients & lifestyle changes putting you on the path to improved mental health. Reaching out for support is the first step: whether it be to friends or family, your GP or other health professional, taking the first step is important in the recovery process. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in improving a wide range of health conditions through nutrition and natural health therapies. At the age of 30 Leanne’s life expectancy was measured in months, not years. She was unlikely to see her daughter turn two. “I was treated with palliative chemotherapy, aiming to gain a few extra precious months and reduce the pain. I was forced to give up work, unable to cope with the side effects of the chemotherapy while working. We began to face enormous financial pressure due to my inability to work and the additional costs brought about by my medical needs. “Now, after over 100 infusions of chemotherapy and nearly two years later, years that I have valued beyond all measure, the chemotherapy has stopped working, the cancer is becoming resistant and is fighting back. “I know that I am lucky to have had this ‘extra’

time, but I simply cannot die. My daughter needs me, no child should have to grow up without the unique love of their mother. My husband needs me, he should not have to raise our daughter alone. I need to survive and I am fighting with every fibre of my being. “My best chance of survival is to get into a clinical trial, which may involve significant costs, and are well beyond our reach.” Leanne has set up a Go Fund Me Page (https:// www.gofundme.com/leannesfight) “We are asking for any contribution, no matter how big or small to assist with treatment costs to give me the best possible chance to be around for long enough for scientists to develop a cure. “We thank everyone who is able to contribute from the very bottom of our hearts.”

Return to sport: ankle injuries It’s coming up to sport season again. Footie boots, netball gear, orange slices and all of the aches and pains that are synonymous with kids sports. But how bad should an ache or a pain be before you go and see someone? Ankle sprains are the most common injury in active and sporting individuals. From a simple rolling of the ankle to a ligamentous tear, a physiotherapist can help. Mild sprain injuries result in a stretching of the ligaments which normally act as a passive restraint and support the ankle with twisting movements. As these ligaments stretch, it becomes easier and easier to reinjure the ankle. Ankle injuries can present with swelling, stiffness and pain. Sometimes, pain may present in three

ways; 1) pain only during activity, 2) pain upon rest following activity, or 3) pain upon waking the following morning after an activity. The presence of pain is the body’s way of warning you that a certain activity may be causing you harm, such as the stretching and tearing or the ligaments around the ankle. Pain following an activity indicates the presence of inflammation. Playing through pain may create a cycle of chronic inflammation which will hinder healing and prolong an injury. Inflammation is commonly treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation. If your child is complaining of persisting pain and swelling around the ankle, it may be time to visit your local physiotherapist. With ligamentous stretching, the ankle becomes unstable and people may also experience a loss of balance. Com-

monly physiotherapists advise rest for 3-5 days in an acutely inflamed ankle, giving a compression bandage to help alleviate swelling. As pain diminishes with rest, your physio will prescribe exercises to help improve ankle stability to reduce recurrence risk. The next big question is should your child use tape or a brace during sport? Ideally, the exercises prescribed by your physiotherapist will aim to improve stability. Though while the ankle is strengthening (which can take six to ten weeks) your child will be heading back to sport. There are pro’s and con’s to both options. Ultimately it is personal preference. If you are concerned about your children’s ankles in the upcoming sporting season, why not give our friendly physiotherapists a call at Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 and book an appointment.

The boys played 20 mins of Rugby League followed by 20 mins of Rugby Union. Players from both teams really stepped outside their comfort zones to play the other code. The main feature had as its “ curtain raiser “ a game of RayTag for the younger players from the Dragons followed by their providing a tunnel of honour for the older boys as they took to the field. Even though the League boys were victorious on the day the real winner was the “ Jake Garrett Foundation “. $925.00 was raised by both teams which will go towards support for families who have lost a child due to a wide range of causes including illness and accidents. Helen Garrett , founder of the organisation, stated that since October 2016 they have given much needed support to over 220 families , Queensland wide and 520 families to date. A huge effort.
