Cooroy joins Before I Die… public art movement Noosa Shire has joined a global public art movement with the unveiling of Cooroy’s Before I Die… wall and Noosa District State High School captains were invited by the Cooroy Returned and Services League (RSL) to attend the official opening. The first Before I Die wall was unveiled in 2011 in New Orleans. The concept quickly became a global phenomenon with over 2000 walls in more than 75 countries. The unique concept is to turn the wall, which is located in public, shared place, into an engaged and interactive space, where people can stop and think and reflect on their life, share their hopes and dreams with others (by writing on the wall), and in turn, inspire others. Cr Jess Glasgow launched the public art piece and invited residents to share the things they hope to accomplish during their lifetime. “These walls have been incredibly well-received all over the world. Noosa free holiday bus success FOR the third year running, Noosa’s free holiday buses have been very popular with over 40,000 people chose to use the free holiday bus during the 10 day period between Boxing Day and January 4. Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson said, “We conducted a survey of users of the free service and 85% of people travelling into Noosa Heads on the free buses had access to a car. “They also indicated that the main reasons they caught the free holiday bus were to avoid traffic congestion, it was convenient to catch a bus and because there was limited parking. “The busiest free buses were 626 and 627 from Tewantin to Sunrise Beach via Noosa Heads, carrying 69% of all passengers. “60% of free holiday bus service users were Noosa Shire residents and 53% had used the free service in previous years. “This is great news for Council because it demonstrates that many locals have embraced using the free buses to access the beach, entertainment and dining precincts during busy holidays. “They have enjoyed the benefits of leaving the car be-

Cooroy-Noosa Road speed limit reduced at Lake MacDonald

Cr Jess Glasgow, RSL Manager Tina Mayfield and school captains at the wall unveiling cherished aspirations and the things on your bucket list can be both motivating and rewarding,” Cr Glasgow said. Cr Glasgow wrote that he would like to “race an iornman” [sic] before he dies; whilst school captain Mitchell Thomas wishes to “be a commercial pilot” before he dies. Tina Mayfield, Cooroy

RSL’s manager, welcomed the opportunity to have the Before I Die wall outside the Cooroy RSL Club on Maple Street. “The RSL committee was in full support of using the front of the RSL for this community project and look forward to seeing the shared hopes and dreams of the Cooroy community.”

The 100km/h section of Cooroy-Noosa Road at Lake MacDonald will be reduced to 90km/h to improve safety for motorists and locals. North Coast District Director Doug Wass said the 5.5km section of 100km/h speed zone was just east of McPauls Road and adjoined the 80km/h section before the Sunrise Road intersection. “A speed limit review on this section late last year, in response to community feedback,” Mr Wass said. “Our assessment determined that the roadside environment and nearby land use meant 90km/h was a more appropriate speed limit for this section of road.

hind, and when the next peak period came around they opted for the bus again, instead of the car. “These people have realised that it makes sense not to sit in a long queue of traffic and then spend ages looking for a park, often without success. “While we can see that we now have many locals getting into the habit of using the free buses during holidays, we really want to encourage even more locals and visitors to use buses and other non-car transport. This will help to reduce congestion into our main shopping, dining, entertainment and beach areas. “Encouraging a greater shift from using the car to other modes of transport is a big focus for Council in 2017.” The free holiday buses will be running again over Easter. “This recommendation was then endorsed by the local speed management committee, which included representatives from Queensland Police, Noosa Council and Transport and Main Roads. Mr Wass said the speed limit reduction formed part of Transport and Main Roads’ commitment to improve safety on Queensland Roads. “The reduction will help to improve road safety on the Cooroy-Noosa Road at this location for locals and motorists travelling through the area,” he said. The new speed signs will be installed by late April 2017.

news Ruby’s tickled pink with her university scholarship win

COOROY RAG

Former Noosa District State High School student, Ruby Tucker just can’t wipe the smile off her face. The 2016 school captain and Cooroy local is about to head off to the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) with a scholarship in one hand and a load of her text books in the other. Ruby was one of several impressive applicants of the annual Bendigo Bank university scholarship program and will now use the funds towards realising her dream of tertiary study. Ruby plans to tackle a dual degree of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Journalism at USC starting next week. It’s the beginning of an exciting chapter for the teen who has enjoyed success through a lot of hard work in recent years. Remarkably, Ruby still found time to give back through her volunteer work with Amnesty International and fundraisers including World’s Greatest Shave and Clean Up Australia Day. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) manages the Cooroy, Pomona, Tewantin and Marcoola Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and wellknown local branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to Ruby to further her tertiary edu-

cation was part of the Community Banks’ commitment to building a stronger community. “The idea behind the scholarship is to assist one regional or rural student per year from Noosa District High School and who is attending university for the first time in 2017,” Mr. Edwards said. “Because of the high costs associated with study, we knew many applicants would need financial assistance to help their dreams come true. Ruby was the strongest applicant in an excellent short list of finalists and she’s a very impressive young woman to boot. We’re proud to award her the 2017 scholarship and wish Ruby well in her first steps towards what looks like a really bright future,” he added. Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted Ruby will be financially supported to achieve her very best this year - thanks to the generosity of the bank. “This is the fifth year this scholarship has been awarded and it attracts our finest students each year. This will be such a great start for Ruby and we’re proud to have had her as a student and our school captain at Noosa District.

Cooroy Hall’s new custodians THE newly incorporated Cooroy Memorial Hall Association (CMHA) is now working in partnership with Noosa Council to refurbish and reopen Cooroy’s historic hall. The Association is drafting a detailed proposal to address the issues that led to the hall’s closure in 2015. The plan will outline the necessary steps, including structural repairs, and upgrades to the kitchen and toilets, to

allow the re-opening of the hall. The proposal will also include a business plan that demonstrates the ongoing uses and viability of the hall. The Association’s submission will be sent to Noosa Council by the end of February, Once the Council receives the Association’s submission, Council planners are expected to deliver an options paper and to

make a recommendation to Council about the future of the hall in March this year. The CMHA aims to convince the Council that the hall must be retained in its current location, and that the Cooroy community has the skills and the expertise to manage the hall in the future. The CMHA will be asking the local community for its support, both financial and in-kind, as soon as the Council

decides to retain the hall. The CMHA now has 15 members, including people with expertise in construction, management, law, architecture, heritage and administration. Membership is invited from all members of the community and those further afield who have an interest in the hall’s future. Any pledges of financial and/or in-kind support will be gratefully

accepted and assist the CMHA in lobbying the Council. Whilst the CMHA is in the process of establishing a website, interested people can contact the Association on its Facebook page, by emailing the CMHA Secretary, Louise Jorgensen, at secretarycooroyhall@ outlook.com or posting expressions of interest or support to PO Box 355, Cooroy, 4563.

It was once said that leadership is empowering young people to see themselves as changemakers. Keen to share their select few with our community, Cooroy State School has unveiled its leadership group for 2017. They’re a fine array of Year 6 students who are already putting their best efforts forward at the historic school. In fact, last week the group was celebrated at a school assembly and Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards was on-hand as a valued sponsor of the school to celebrate the news and wish the new leaders well. Richard Barrie is principal of Cooroy State School and advised the audience of the number of quality applicants for leadership positions and said the selection panel had a difficult task with such a talented pool to select from. “Our leaders will work

The Cooroy State School 2017 leadership group with principal, Richard Barrie, P&C president, Craig McGregor and Cooroy Community Bank's Geoff Edwards throughout the year on various projects revolving around school improvement and making our school a great place for kids, as well

as charitable endeavours to support charities within our community. We’re fortunate to have sponsorship from our local Bendigo

Bank for some of those projects. “I’m very proud of this group of enthusiastic young people who are

embracing their leadership opportunities at Cooroy State School in 2017. It’s going to be a great year ahead,” Mr. Barrie said.

Field of Poppies FOLLOWING the call for members of the public to knit and crochet poppies for the ‘Field of Poppies’, knitting needles and crochet hooks have come out of the cupboard and put to use. Thank you to ALL the lovely people making red and purple poppies. So far we now have over 400 poppies made for our field of poppies. Initially, I was hoping for 400 poppies, but it is clear that we will surpass that number, so I have set the bar higher to 1000 poppies to ensure the field of poppies is as dense and realistic looking as possible. I have decided to attach them to camouflage nets to give them a more realistic look. To further acknowledge our brave diggers from the district, I have made name tags for each digger who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. I ask that families members from the district come and attach their loved ones name to a poppy. I also ask members of the community to feel free to help me attach the poppies to the camouflage nets. If anyone has any Army Corps buttons, or Air Force, or Navy uniform buttons they would like to add to their loved ones poppy, please feel free to bring them in

when we attach the poppies to the camouflage nets. A lot of people have asked what the purple poppy is for. The answer is; over 9 million animals died during WWI including many thousands of Australian war horses, mules, donkeys, pigeons and dogs. No Australian war animals were returned home due to quarantine restrictions. On the 21st of July 2017 the ‘Australian War Animals Memorial Organisation Inc.’ will be opening Australia’s official war animal memorial in Pozieres, France and has asked that people share in the memory and attributes of the important roles these wonderful animals played and continue to play today that help keep our diggers safe. Attaching the names to the poppies and attaching the poppies to the camouflage nets will take place at the Cooroy RSL on Monday, 10th April, 2017. I am looking forward to meeting as many poppy makers as possible, and personally thank them for the time they have put into making this project so special. I will also attach any poppies brought in after that date. Heather Ford

So much to do, so little done! I don’t fancy or follow any side of the political circus, They’re all just politicians in an atmosphere of self-service. They do very little governing, enjoy a slanging match, Neglecting what they’re paid to do, they’re really not up to scratch. This is a wonderful, beautiful country, the envy of many nations, We have worked for it, fought and died for it, survived many tribulations. A country we should be proud of, peaceful and tolerant, And for our future and our children, happily self-confident. I thought our PM really knew how to behave, And wouldn’t descend to political rant and rave. But his performance the other day, was a grossly personal attack, A little beyond the usual Parliamentary yakkety yak. And the Deputy PM was incoherent, we prayed for his speech to finish, When thankfully someone asked the Speaker to make him speak in English. The power crisis is absorbing, everyone’s in the game, And they’ll keep at it until they find someone they can safely blame. Finally I watched a senator lamenting on TV, That the Gold Life Pass had joined the ranks of the RIP. It was sad, it was touching, he was a cert for the poor house, He was so sincere and heartbroken there wasn’t a dry seat in the House.

news Banking on our communities

COOROY RAG

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IT’S not known as the most exciting of topics, but I want to explore how the modern banking industry works and what it contributes to our communities and our economy. In my role as a manager of two Community Bank branches in Cooroy and Pomona, I’m seeing banking change and giving regional communities such as ours a real say in its own future. Currently, the most of us are aware the Australian banking sector is dominated by four major banks and the Australian government has a four pillars policy that prevents mergers between the four major banks. This is long-standing policy rather than formal regulation, but it reflects the broad political unpopularity of bank mergers. Competitors to the ‘big four’ banks include smaller and often regional banks, as well as building societies and mutual credit unions. I obviously work for one of those, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank (Australia’s fifth largest retail bank), but on the same list are such banks as Suncorp, BOQ and ME Bank. The number of building societies in Australia sits at 10 and the number of credit unions is approximately 100, so the market choice is sizeable. Did you know the financial services sector now represents almost 9.3 per cent of Australia’s total gross value add of more than $1.5 trillion over the year - the largest industry sector of Australia’s economy? Banking and the various sectors that fall under banking such as building societies, credit unions, money market dealers, life insurance, superannuation funds, health and general insurance, truly is a major part of our Australian economy. At Bendigo Bank, the number of branches across the country continues to increase each year, with more than $68 billion in assets, more than 1.6 million customers and more than 100,000 shareholders More importantly, more than $165 million in

Community Bank branch profits has been returned to community projects across Australia and right here, our Cooroy, Tewantin, Pomona and Marcoola branches have returned more than $2.1 million since 2008. I’m proud of the part our Noosa hinterland branches continue to play in this ongoing success story. So get to know more about your bank and its role in our community. You may even be interested in becoming part of the banking industry and exploring possible employment opportunities. Building an emergency fund Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* An emergency fund (also known as a rainy day fund or savings buffer) gives you some breathing space to deal with life’s ups and downs. You can use this money if something unexpected happens to you or your family, like your car needs major repairs, or you need to buy a new washing machine. Here we show you how to build an emergency fund to protect yourself if things go wrong. What is an emergency fund? An emergency fund is an amount of money you have set aside to help cover the cost of any urgent and unexpected expenses. Having a savings buffer means you won’t need to borrow money if a crisis happens and you need money quickly. It can give you peace of mind that you can face any bumps in the road. Start small to build your savings The secret to building a savings buffer is to start small and save regularly. It doesn’t matter how much - or how little - you save, you just need to make a start, and then keep going. For example, if you save as little as $10 or $20 per

week, you’ll have $520 or even $1,040 by the end of the year. That’s the start of a solid amount of savings that will give you some financial breathing space. Use MoneySmart’s savings goals calculator to help see how a little saved each week help you reach your savings target. Automate your savings Saving regularly is the best way to build up your savings balance. Set up a separate high interest savings account for your savings to go into via automated payments set up with your bank. You can also ask your payroll department if they can send part of your pay to your savings account. Then you can set and forget, knowing that your savings are growing without you having to transfer them every time you get paid. If you find a savings account that offers bonus interest for every month you don’t make a withdrawal, you’ll be less likely to touch the money unless it’s an emergency. If you have a home loan with an offset account, you can use this account as your emergency fund. That way, the money will be working

to reduce your interest payments, but will be available to use if you need it. Ways to save every day Track your expenses It’s easy to lose track of the money you spend everyday. D o w n l o a d MoneySmart’s free TrackMySPEND app to help identify areas where you can save. Avoid impulse buying Every dollar you spend on an impulse purchase is another dollar you don’t have to build your savings. Check out our tips on how to reduce the urge to impulse buy. Save spare change Who said piggy banks are just for kids? Get an empty jar or ice cream container and put your spare change into it at the end of each week. When the container is full, deposit the money into your emergency fund. Do a budget A budget can help you get a better picture of your finances, allowing you to plug any spending leaks you might find. ASIC’s budget planner can help you work out what your household expenses are. Keep adding to your savings

If you happen to get any extra money during the year, for example from a tax refund, you can add this money to your savings pool. When to use your emergency fund Receiving an unexpectedly large or urgent expense is never a good feeling, but having a savings buffer will help to keep your stress levels down. You won’t have to worry about where you’ll get the money to pay for it, and you can focus your energy on solving the problem. Keep your emergency fund for those expenses you really need to pay now. If you want to use your savings for something else, then set up a separate savings goal. Case study: Briony uses her rainy day fund Briony had been building an emergency fund for 2 years and had saved more than $1,000. To build up her savings, she had set up automatic transfers on payday from her bank account straight into a high interest savings account. When her car suddenly broke down, she used some of the money from the high interest account to pay for it to be fixed.

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

Briony was relieved to know she didn’t have to put the car repairs on credit or ask her family for money. Also, because she has set up automatic transfers, she could top up her emergency fund again from her next pay. An emergency fund gives you control over your finances in a time of crisis. By regularly saving for a rainy day, you’ll be able to weather life’s storms. Source: Reproduced with the permission of ASIC’s MoneySmart Team. On completion of her Diploma she was poached by several Salons successively and commissioned to design and set up two salons by separate investors. As an award winning Stylist, Meaghan walked into the high profile U.K / Europe based Alan International when her round-the-world ticket took her to London. It was there that she received her final polish as a stylist, co-ordinating fashion shows and educational demonstrations in Italy. Meaghan was offered a position with the Italian hair product company Cobis, assisting in product and brand development, however she decided it was time to return to Australia to pursue another dream. Opening her own salon on the hip and happening Brunswick Street Fitzroy in Melbourne her focus was to return to study. “It was a very daunting notion I had but my time in London and Europe visiting all the big galleries and voraciously reading to educate myself put me in good stead.I have painted since I was a small child, so that drive within was impossible to ignore,” said Meaghan. Meaghan has been exhibiting her work since 1998 and is now studying the final leg of her Master of Fine Art at QUT part time. ‘Hairdressing, particularly cutting is very sculptural, I learnt Vidal Sassoon’s Pivot Point. His method teaches the Stylist to visualise solid forms in 3D. Very old school, very much about precision cutting. You don’t see that kind of

Problem with the plumbing? PAUL Stevens, of Paul Stevens Plumbing, grew up on a farm in Emu Vale QLD before his family moved to Toowoomba at the start of his high school. Paul says he always had an affinity to the Sunshine Coast and visited his grandparents, who lived in Tinbeerwah for 30 years, often. “It was my dream to move back to this area one day,” says Paul. “I did my trade and worked in Toowoomba for a while and then moved to Moranbah Central Qld for a plumbing job and more experience. I had a crack at Mining (Operator) for a little while until the Company I worked for made all of us redundant. This was a great opportunity to start my own plumbing business. I ran my own successful business (sole trader) for nine years. While in Moranbah Paul met his wife and they now have two young sons. “With two boys now and the responsibility that comes with it, it was time to look for some bigger pastures so the boys could experience what I experienced as a child at my grandparents’ when I was younger. We found a place close to Cooroy

and are really looking forward to building our business and new life here,” said Paul. For all your plumbing needs, phone Paul Stevens Plumbing 0438 866 112.

MISTRESS

Vale: Tony VonBoxmeer

RECENTLY a memorial service was held for local builder and community supporter Tony VonBoxmeer whose death, just prior to Christmas, shocked both his family and community. Pastor Stephen Hilditch led the service with almost 200 people in attendance. Representa-

tives from organisations that Tony had been involved with were present along with local business owners, their staff, his many friends and associates. Sadly Tony took his own life and Pastor Hilditch explained that the family recognised the immense need for the community and them-

selves to find some closure to the tragic circumstances. Tony’s daughter, Nicole Martin, with brother Paul by her side thanked everyone on behalf of her mother AnneMaree for coming. Nicole proceeded to lay out Tony’s life, history and involvement in the community. She revealed that although the family was struggling for understanding and answers on reflection they realised what a good father, person and community supporter he was. Just looking at the crowd that attended she was assured of the respect that Tony had in the community and further afield. Representatives from Project Vietnam spoke about Tony’s involvement overseas, along with other trades people, in building, maintaining, restoring and extending orphanages and schools. Tony’s building skills and positive Dutch manner saw him become building and site manager. His skills, enthusiasm and comradery were welcome and most appreciated. Next to speak was Barry Stewart a representative from the Lions

King of the Mountain committee who reflected on Tony’s involvement in setting up and helping on the day of the major hinterland event. Mr Stewart spoke of Tony’s enthusiasm and his willingness to help in any area. He also revealed something that only a few knew about and that was at a certain time Tony dressed in a costume and became Prince Bruce of the mountain to entertain the crowd and runners. Fire Brigade Captain Sam Spinks spoke of Tony’s involvement for a few years in the Rural Fire Brigade. He said that Tony’s beaming greeting with heavy Dutch accent of “ hullooo” was always welcome and in good mateship was echoed

back to him from his fire fighting comrades, many who were present in uniform from the various local units. Chaplain for Fire Fighters on the Sunshine Coast Michael Cody read the Firemans prayer. A poignant moment came when Sam Spinks presented Tony’s firemans helmet to Nicole and the family. Pastor Stephen Hilditch reminded everyone that there is help available through different organisations and that as a community we need to be more caring and aware of those around us. Vale Tony VonBoxmeer, Father, Friend and Community Champion.

Rotary supports school’s excellent programs Noosa District State High School was presented with a $1000 cheque from the Rotary Club of Cooroy last week at a full school parade. The $1000 cheque is to be used to support the school’s excellent programs, including the popular Duke of Edinburgh subject. The Rotary Club of Cooroy President Andrew Aves and Secretary Carol Aves presented certificates of appreciation to the school’s Interact Club and Duke of Edinburgh teacher Dean McMaster. Mr McMaster’s Duke of Edinburgh students assisted the Rotary Club of Cooroy last year at the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival through cleaning up and clearing the mountain tracks, making them more accessible for the

climbers. Deputy Principal Renee Rackley met with Mr and Ms Aves following the full school parade to thank the Rotary Club of Cooroy for the support of the school’s initiatives. “We would like to thank Andrew and Carol who attended our parade for being an integral part of our school and for supporting Noosa Districts young people,” Ms Rackley said. Rotary Youth Programs, including the Rotary Youth Leadership Award; the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment; and for budding scientists currently in Year 11, the National Youth Science Forum, which will be held in Canberra and Brisbane in January 2018. Application forms will be available from the school science department.

HARDWARE The Noosa District State High School Interact Club is a social humanitarian-focused group, which meets fortnightly and seeks to help those less fortunate. hope our relationship with Rotary continues to strengthen and grow,” Ms Rackley said. The Rotary Club of Cooroy are currently seeking applications from students in Year 9 to 12 who will be 15 to 17 years of age in January 2018 to travel to a European country for one year to study

Noosa District Concert Band

THE Noosa District Concert Band hosted a combined band evening recently with Clarence High students from Tasmania. Encouraging students to continue playing their instruments after they leave school is one of the reasons these concert bands are formed. It’s very rewarding to share our experiences with these students and others in the community. Looking forward to the next couple of months the Noosa District Concert Band will be perform-

ing at a number of Christmas concerts as well as another combined band event with students from Maleny. Noosa District Concert Band welcomes new members, if you haven’t picked up your instrument for some time ... pull it out and have a blow. The band practises on Tuesday evenings right here in Cooroy. Support for Australian Body Art Festival is Jaw Dropping The Australian Body Art Festival has been embraced by its new Noosa Hinterland home in Cooroy with event organisers overwhelmed by the generosity of people keen to see this unique event get back on its feet. “It was a bit of a risk for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce to take on this event to keep it alive because we were basically starting from scratch and there was a huge amount of work to do. But the support for the festival has been overwhelming proving it was the right decision to make. It’s quite possible this will be the best event ever,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. Support has come in from individuals who have donated money as well as a host of support from local businesses and community groups. “The crowdfunding campaign set up for the event has already reached 80% but if anyone has a few dollars to spare this is a pretty good event to donate to. We are holding the event regardless of whether we reach the funding target but every extra dollar we raise will make the festival an even more spectacular experience for everyone.” The other amazing show of support has been from artists, with over 50 competitors registered and coming from all over Australia and overseas.

“We’ve got artists coming from as far away as Tasmania and South Korea. It is such a good response that registrations are closing at end of February because we have nearly run out of space to fit them all!” explained Danielle. One thing is for sure, put 8 & 9 April into your diary and plan to be in Cooroy because this is one event that should be a must see on your calendar! More information about the festival and the crowdfunding campaign can be found online at www.australianbodyart.com.au.

LIVING on purpose means to be able to spend time doing what brings you fulfilment, whether that is through work and career, hobbies and interests or life in general. It is an aim that is applicable to all people of all ages and all stages in life. The trouble is many of us are doing what we think society expects us to do or what family members demand of us. In these cases, if we are honest with ourselves, we are carrying around a lot of resentment, with a deep sense of hollowness inside. This depletes our energy and enthusiasm and very quickly there is not much left in the tank to give to those around us. So, everyone loses out under this scenario. On the other hand, when we are living on purpose, we have energy and vitality to freely give to others. We become a joy to be around, as well as an inspiration. Studies have also shown that having a sense of purpose contributes to decreased stress levels and decreased risk of health problems such as heart disease and stroke. All in all, evidence reveals living with purpose adds years to one’s life and it is never to late to start reaping the benefits of living this way. Taking the first step to claim one’s true sense of purpose, requires the nurturing of self worth, with a sense of being deserving of a fulfilling and happy life as much as anyone else. A wonderful opportunity presents itself at the Cooroy Library on Saturday 25 March, when Deb, a Louise Hay Heal Your Life Coach will give step by step guidance to those women at a crossroad in life where life seems a little confusing…whether that is as a school leaver, an empty nester or someone newly retired. The focus is on finding a new direction in life that is meaningful to each individual. Also presenting at the workshop will be Cat, a Personal Stylist, giving tips and strategies on how to get a fresh, fabulous and confident look to accompany the new you. IN January 2016, local yoga instructor, Sandy Klein, started to get weakness in her right hand and cramps numbness and tremors. She couldn’t turn the car keys on or take them out, her fork kept falling out of her hand, she couldn’t can’t raise her arm above her head and her right leg drags. In May Sandy had a stroke. After many MRIs and Cat Scans and Neurologist consults, Sandy was diagnosed with Motor Nuron Disease. “This was a real blow,” says Sandy. “I can no longer do yoga as cannot get up off the floor and my balance is poor. I have difficulty walking. I have been to the hospital for Physio and O.T. I am doing my best to prevent this from worsening as if I do nothing I will be in a wheelchair and may lose my ability to speak. “Recently I found a treatment which I sincerely believe will help me stop or slow down or even reverse the symptoms. The treatment is at the Nurophysics Therapy Institute on the Gold Coast and the results being achieved sound promising.” This is where our community can help. The cost of the therapy is $2200 and Sandy will need funds for accommodation. A bank account has been opened at the Bendigo Bank in Cooroy called Sandys Motor Neuron Account. sport Dolphins achieve personal bests at State swim meet

COOROY RAG The weekend of 18th & 19 th February was the 2017 Ronald McDonalds House Charities State swimming meet at the Chandler sport complex in Brisbane. With 1900 competitors from across the state of Queensland & Overseas. Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club had their largest amount of swimmers attend with 14 swimmers competing in 34 events. It shows that the Noosa hinterland is providing a healthy calibre of swimmers. For 8 of the 14 swimmers it was their first time competing at State level. We had 2 Swimmers in the Top 10 with Tomas Wright placing 9th in the Boys 11 years 50 meter Breaststroke and Coach Andrew Cowan Placing 7th in the Men’s Open 50 Meter Butterfly and 8th in the Men’s Open 50 Meter Freestyle. It was also the first time in 5 years a swimmer has qualified for the club in an Opens event. Ethan Druce made the Qualifying time for Open Men’s 50 Meter Breaststroke and finished

in overall position in the state at 29th with a personal best. All the 14 swimmers received personal best times.

Joining forces ON Saturday 4th March the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club, based in Eumundi, and the Noosa Pirates Junior Rugby League club will join forces (across the codes) to raise urgently needed funds for the Jake Garrett Foundation. This locally based foundation was established in 2013 by Helen Garrett after the death of her son Jake. The foundation aims to support families who are dealing with the burden of losing a child. They aim to create an environment of love and warmth and do whatever is needed at the worst time of a parent’s life. On the 4th the two clubs will come together for an inter code match that will see their Under 13 players competing in half a game of Rugby Union followed by half a game of Rugby League. The winner to receive a shield and bragging rights for the next twelve months. The match will have as a “curtain raiser” a game of Tag / Viva 7’s Rugby comprising players from the Dragons younger teams. All involved will be charged a gold coin entry fee with all proceeds going to this worthy cause. Proceeds from the canteen will be included as well. Games will get underway by 8.30am and conclude by 10.00am. A great way to spend Saturday morning in the beautiful Noosa Hinterland.

Coach Andrew Cowan quoted saying “All the swimmers that competed did a wonderful performance in the pool and I

couldn’t have asked for a better result”. For more information about the Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club or the
