Not my fave

MY teenage children have suggested that instead of buying them an Easter egg this year, I should get them something more practical … like car seat covers or wait for it … an air conditioner. These suggestions would have been met with more enthusiasm if (a) car seat covers and air conditioners cost $10 and (b) we hadn’t already been snacking on Easter eggs since February. I did agree though that something more practical was in order. Easter has always been a little bit traumatic for my kids. There was the year that I shopped too early and come Easter Sunday their Easter eggs were soggy blobs in the bottom of caved in alfoil. The year I forgot to buy them altogether and we had to go shopping at the Servo on Easter morning. The year I told them the Easter Bunny wasn’t real (I thought at 12 and 13 years old they could handle the truth – not so) and the year the carpet snake won the Easter Egg hunt. So after considering their requests I have magnanimously agreed to pay my son’s school fees and for my daughter to have her planter wart cut out. They also got a free lesson in ‘don’t mess with a chocolate addict at Easter time’. It ain’t over until the fat lady gets her Ferrero Rochers. So there you have it … practical presents, planter warts and pythons … the end of an era ... Not my fave!

Party Time! THE recent political circus was not a pretty sight, Labor’s internal squabble, the party leadership fight. It looked like a Western movie, with six guns into play, Big Julie saying to Kevin “Challenge and make my day!” They should have met in the High Street, outside the Heartbreak Saloon, (And as usual in these things, punctually at noon.) Eventually it happened, the shootout was brought on, And Big Julie said to Kevin “I’m afraid that you are gone”. Kevin made his farewell speech, to explain his motivation, And then retired to the back bench, his newly earned location. Tony Abbott and his Libs, could not believe their luck, As they watched the Labor party, trying to come unstuck, The media had a ball, while all this was occurring, And were quite relentless, with their joyful stirring. On TV and the radio, the twitter scene as well, Every Thomas Richard and Harold, had a story to tell, The public got quite sick of it, the constant repetition, Commentators all declaring, they exclusively, knew the true position. Parliament of course, became a theatre of war, With censure motions, divisions, points of order, galore.

They forgot about the governing, the job that really matters, With the Speaker screaming “Order!!!’ the procedure sadly in tatters. When will the politicians realise, the public get thoroughly tired, Of the way they carry on, leaving much to be desired? Parliament is the nation’s chamber, for our leaders to legislate, To discuss the country’s affairs, to reasonably debate, But they take their childish behaviour to the sorriest extreme, No wonder politicians are held by the public, in such low esteem!!

news Makeover for Cooroy railway station is long overdue

COOROY RAG

RAIL Back On Track (http:// backontrack.org), a web-based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers, has added its voice to the community chorus call for Cooroy’s ‘rocket launcher’ pedestrian rail overbridge to be replaced. Robert Dow, Spokesperson for RAIL Back On Track said: “The Cooroy railway station is an eyesore, not in keeping with its historic status or its role as the rail gateway to the Noosa region. In the short term it requires repainting while, in the medium term a solution must be found to improving pedestrian and bicycle access across the tracks. That means the ‘rocket launcher’ pedestrian overbridge must be replaced. Plans to repaint the station buildings appear to have stalled. Meanwhile, long-term planning must be sped up for the Cooroy station to become a TransitOriented Development hub, something the state government talks about, but does nothing to implement. RAIL back On Track hopes candidates in the upcoming election will get behind moves to bring the station to an appropriate standard. “The facts are that the existing overbridge, nicknamed the ‘rocket

beneath Elm Street to its far side, with a roundabout at the junction of Diamond Street acting as a traffic control measure and a light well into the underpass. “It is appropriate that Queensland Rail and the Department of Transport and Main Roads should begin a dialogue with the local community rather than develop plans to an advanced stage and presenting them. Fundamentally, planning should confirm that the current alignment of the railway line through Cooroy is the most appropriate. “The operation of the station overbridge is the subject of a rail infrastructure Transport Services Contract that expires in 201213. We call upon whichever party is in government after March 24 to commit to a round of public consultation involving the Sunshine Coast Council about cross-rail pedestrian access at Cooroy so that the most practical solution can be included in the next Transport Services Contract to be implemented from July 2013. “Queensland Rail, TransLink, and the Department of Transport and Main Roads are the principal agencies involved, but a role exists for the Sunshine Coast Council to be involved when considering wider town planning implications,” Mr Dow said.

launcher’ for its steepness, is the only place in Cooroy where school children, pedestrians, cyclists, those using mobility scooters and mothers pushing prams can cross the railway tracks that divide the town. It was built in the 1980s, and fails the current Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards. A new overbridge complying with the DDA provisions would cost about $1.6 million. “RAIL Back On Track notes recent community calls for an ‘art-grade’ pedestrian crossing where people will be able to walk across the tracks, back and forth, between Maple and Elm Streets. While not ruling out this proposal entirely, RAIL Back On Track would want all safety implications examined thoroughly. “Lifts may be another solution, but they can fail, meaning that all avenues for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the railway at Cooroy would be cut for the number of hours it would take to have a technician come and repair the lift mechanism. “RAIL Back On Track would like to propose another possible solution, involving a ramp through the car park opposite the Cooroy Fruit Bowl, passing under the railway line, with a ramp to the station, or possibly further extension of the underpass

Helping hands OFFERS of help from local companies are pouring in to assist neighbouring businesses in Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Noosaville and Tewantin, following our recent flash floods. Cooroy and surrounds received more than 300mm in just a few hours on Friday – that’s more than one foot of rain on the imperial scale. Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic Development Branch officers are coordinating the offers as part of their meetings with affected local businesses many of whom are facing substantial costs through damage to buildings and equipment. Economic Development Portfolio Councillor, Lew Brennan, has spent several days helping out in these towns, which are all located in the Division he represents. “Our first move after the storm hit Cooroy was to check with business owners as to what assistance they needed, whether it be help with the clean-up, access to specialist advice or assistance in making an insurance claim,” he said. “Council’s Local Business Support Program is not just there for businesses which might be facing challenges generally – we also swing into gear to respond to unforeseen circumstances such as helping businesses recover from the weather events that we have experienced.” Cr Brennan said a number of Cooroy companies

had come forward to pitch in. “Laguna Signs has offered assistance with temporary signage, while building supplies company Ritek has offered its assistance for building owners with structural damage, even though the company itself suffered some damage. Council’s Economic Development Manager, Craig Matheson, said his team had been on the ground since Sunday, visiting local businesses, relaying urgent requests for assistance back to the Disaster Coordination Centre and arranging access to specialist advice. “The truly amazing thing is the resilience of the businesses and business owners who have been impacted by the severe weather events,” Mr Matheson said. “They got in, cleaned up and now many businesses have resumed trading in some way. “I encourage any business owner to contact us if a problem emerges for them in the days and weeks ahead.” If any local businesses want to offer further assistance to their neighbours, call council’s Economic Development Branch on 5475 8776. Support is available for individuals and families experiencing personal hardship. Contact the Department of Communities’ Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349.

SUNSHINE Coast Council has welcomed the news the State Government has offered financial assistance to small businesses in Pomona, Cooroy and surrounding towns affected by the rain and flooding on Friday, 24 February, 2012. State Ministers Neil Roberts and Tim Mulherin have announced that affected businesses and not-forprofit organisations could be eligible for lowinterest loans. Economic Development portfolio councillor, Lew Brennan, said the community was working well to get back on its feet, but additional support was always welcome.

COOROY RAG B O U Q U E T S & B R I C K B AT S BOUQUETS to Jim Dunstan who celebrated his 94th birthday on 19th March, love from the Ragettes and all your poetry fans.

BOUQUETS to Lew Brennan and his team. We were inundated with water after last week’s large storm and I am very impressed by the diligence and professionalism of his secretary Colleen and also the response from Sunshine Coast Council’s business support staff. Despite severe damage from flooding, our business was back up and running within hours of our phone call to Colleen at Lew Brennan’s office. Thank you on a job well done. BOUQUETS to all the staff, family, friends and kind hearted community members who helped in Pomona after the Wet Friday flooding on 24 Feb 2012. As it was elsewhere in town, Factory St was initially awash with muddy debris, then it transformed into a hive of activity as mutual support and the clean up reached full swing. The response by organisations including QFR, SES, QR, Energex was instrumental in saving lives and limiting property loss. Huge thanks to all concerned and wishing everyone well during the recovery. BOUQUETS to the Daddow’s staff who have kindly mowed the side of the road at the corner of Mary River Rd and Pine Street. We now have visibility of oncoming traffic and can safely turn onto Mary River Road. BOUQUET to Cooroy Primary School for the happy concert and lovely morning tea they hosted recently for the people at Share and Care. BOUQUETS to all who offered to help and extended their well wishes during my recent illness. Special thanks to my wife Sue and family, especially Daniel, doctors and nurses at Nambour Hospital – David Sadler. BOUQUETS to Mike from Cudgerie who, after the big storm in Cooroy, quietly made his way around the streets, and used his chainsaw to cut downed trees into manageable pieces for residents to put out for Council collection. No one asked him - he just did it. BRICKBATS. We live in a town we are proud of, surrounded by families and businesses who pull together with pride in times when mother nature deals us a hand that is out of our control. Daily we see hundreds of local school children walking to and from school wearing uniforms symbolic of the level of education this town offers our children many of whom will parent the future generations and businesses of this town. Why then as a parent do I find it so distressing to see not one but many 12, 13 & 14 yr old boys and girls walking home from school along the streets of Cooroy at 3:00pm, in full uniforms, laughing having fun with their friends, and so openly smoking their lives away. Does the responsibility, discipline and education of these children end at 3pm? BRICKBATS to the two women who rifled through, stole and destroyed property donated to The Salvation Army Family Store in Cooroy. These two women were witnessed going through the donations left under the side of the building of Monday 5 March, leaving items strewn through the mud so that what was left had to be thrown in the bin. Items left on the verandah over the weekend were also gone through and found strewn over the stair banisters and front lawn! The witness was totally disgusted by the obvious wanton destruction and theft of goods donated to a charity who assists those less fortunate. Police have been contacted and will increase their patrols of this site. BRICKBATS to the low life thief/thieves who broke into Pomona Newsagency after they were flooded. As if businesses in town don’t have enough on their plates already! Email your bouquet and brickbats to editorial@cooroyrag.com.au

news How to turn upaid invoices into cash Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy IMAGINE what your business could achieve if up to 80% of all outstanding sales invoices were paid into your bank account within 24 hours, without the need for real estate security. Debtor finance is designed for small to medium-sized businesses that sell to other businesses on credit terms, but have insufficient assets (eg, real estate) to increase their current borrowing for working capital and other growth purposes. Also known as invoice finance or receivables finance, it has long been a mainstream funding vehicle in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. In Australia, businesses have been realising its benefits increasingly in recent years. In the current tight credit environment, debtor finance is a timely and sustainable cash flow solution because it is secured by invoices rather than property. As sales grow, (ie, the more invoices issued for work completed), so does a business’s access to finance. This flexible line of credit shields businesses from the diminishing borrowing capacity that would result from falling property prices. Debtor finance can include a debtor administration function, where debtors are aware of the financier’s involvement and that payments must be made to the financier. The outsourcing of debtor administration frees

up time and resources for businesses. Some also find that the involvement of a third party with financial clout encourages debtors to pay on time. How does it work? Whenever you raise an invoice for goods or services you have delivered, your financier will pay you up to 80% of the total invoice value, usually within 24 hours. The remaining 20% (less a small fee) is refunded to you when your debtor pays. Is debtor finance suitable for your business? You are likely to receive prompt approval if you sell to other businesses on credit terms and are in one of the following industries: - Recruitment and labour hire - Wholesale trade - Manufacturing - Transport - Smash repairers and panel shops - Agriculture and mining - Printing

Community Update GREAT effort after storm: I would like to thank the many, many people who are pitching in and helping the community get back together after the ferocious storm that ripped through Cooroy last Tuesday and the flooding that occurred as a result of the very heavy rainfall last Friday evening. Council and emergency services crews continue to work tirelessly to clean debris, put tarpaulins on roofs, and restore power in the area. Council also immediately deployed all available Parks and Gardens crews and arborists to help remove fallen trees from the area and Roads crews to help restore safety to the roads and assess damage. While the clean up continues in some parts of our district, the township was back on its feet with most businesses affected in Cooroy following the storm on Tuesday operating as usual within 24 hours. Council’s Economic Development staff have been endeavouring to visit affected businesses in

Cooroy and Pomona to ascertain what assistance is required. The exceptional response from emergency service crews ensured disruptions to businesses and residences were kept to a minimum and the efforts of local SES, police, Energex and Sunshine Coast Council crews was outstanding over the critical time during and just after the storm. Thank you to everyone involved for your hard work in difficult conditions. There is still much rebuilding to be done and I’m proud to be part of a community that has united during this time of need. Kin Kin kids riding high: It is great to hear that so many kids and their parents are enjoying the new $50,000 skate park in Kin Kin sports ground. The skate park offers another opportunity for kids to keep active and healthy by getting outdoors with friends and family. Some families ride their horses down and the kids ride their bikes, skateboards or scooters – so the park has created a really good social environment for the town. As news spreads about the new skate park, it will

Cr Lew Brennan, Div 12 be great to see more families gathering together as they have before when we improved parks and playground facilities, the horse yards and tennis club. We’re currently looking into adding some seating – and with 45 kids there the other afternoon – that will make things a little more comfortable for parents. For me this is what it is all about, helping to deliver on the many requests from families over the years and to see so many kids enjoying this new skate park, it is just wonderful. It reminds me of my first project in council in 1997 which was to get the Cooran skatepark built. Committed to improving pedestrian safety: Last week I approached the State Government with major safety con-

cerns faced by Cooroy residents caused by lack of pedestrian and cyclist access over the rail line that cuts the town in two. Over the years council staff have approached the Department of Transport and Main Roads at various levels to seek assistance to have this problem rectified. In a letter to State Government representatives I raised this issue that has long been a safety hazard for the community, and sought commitment from the State Government to fix the hazard. This issue has existed for as long as I can remember. We’ve got a town with a rail line cutting it in two, and as many of you know, no safe cyclist or proper accessible pedestrian access over the rail line, with a two lane bridge the only means for vehicles to get from one side of town to the other. I explained that the only safe means for cyclists and pedestrians to get across town is via a steep footbridge over the railway. This is challenging and inconvenient for the elderly, people with disabilities and parents with prams. In addition, there is a

Spot the pothole, contact council THE heavy rain may have left the Sunshine Coast, but potholes are now appearing on roads around the region. Sunshine Coast Council is committed to repairing the damage and Civil Works Services Manager John Netherton said locals could also help by letting us know where problems are located. “Council is encouraging residents who spot pot holes to report them to us by calling customer service on (07) 54757272 or jumping on council’s website and filling in a quick and easy online form, he said. “Council is responsible for approximately 3500km of roads around the Sunshine Coast so the more sets of eyes we have spotting problems and reporting them to us, the faster we can get out and fix them.

“As a result of the first rain event in February, over 90 sites have already been identified as having storm and or flood damage across the coast. “This includes damage at bridges and culverts where the water overtopped the road, large scours and some landslips. “Along with this, potholes will continue to pop up over the weeks to come. When completing the online form, residents are urged to provide as much information as possible to assist council in identifying the location and urgency of the work required. Council will prioritise any items reported and work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to repair potholes on local and State Government controlled roads.

school on each side of the rail corridor attended by hundreds of children who would benefit from safer access to and from school. I have asked for cooperation from State Government representatives in lobbying on our behalf to the Department of Transport and Main Roads to permanently rectify these issues. New playground arrives for Apex Park, Cooroy: Installation of the new playground at Apex Park (behind Cooroy IGA) has started and the guys are working extra hard to try to have this completed by the end of the week (weather permitting) – a great bonus for a town that has suffered so much in the last week. The new playground works include a large multi level climbing structure with slides, new double swing, new bench/back rest seating within fenced playground area; new shade trees and additional landscaping. The completion of this project will make hundreds of the Cooroy littlies and their Mums and Dads happy I’m sure.

REMEMBER you saw them here first folks, because these two faces may soon become well known ones in corporate Australia? Well, that’s the dream for two local high school students and they’re pretty excited! Ayden Nicoll and Kirsty Cusack both attend Noosa District High School and share a keen interest in business. Recently, the duo was appointed as Junior Observers for 2012 on a board that manages one of the only publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin. Since 2008, these same Community Bank branches have combined to give back more than $795,000 to community groups, schools and organisations right across our region. The

branches continue to provide communities with an opportunity to enhance control over their community capital, ensuring more money stays in the area for local investment. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at Cooroy Library - and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at the school each June, Ayden and Kirsty were made aware of a program where they could attend each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how community banking works on a boardroom level. It’s a big step in the right direction in the development of any career and Ayden and Kirsty have seen firsthand how it can lead to a great job close to home. A junior director from 2010 is Lucie Loginow,

part the Community Bank branches plays in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin’s future. It’s just amazing how much time and money the branches have invested in our communities already for all our benefit,” Ayden added.

news A simple strategy that can boost your Nest Egg

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management* WHEN it comes time to finally hang up the work boots, a lot of people face the frightening realisation that they don’t have enough retirement savings to live the lifestyle they were hoping for. Many people make the mistake of leaving their run too late when building their retirement nest egg. But if a person’s retirement savings are looking a little grim, or even if they could just do with a boost, a Transition to Retirement (TTR) strategy is available to over 55s who are still working to boost their retirement savings. Although the strategy might be a little difficult to grasp at first, once people understand it, they are often surprised by how much it can increase their retirement savings. There are two simple steps involved in a Transition to Retirement strategy: Step 1: Once a person has reached their superannuation preservation age, they can move their super into a specific type of account-based allocated pension to give themselves a more tax efficient income. Some of the income payments received from the account-based pension may be tax-free with any taxable amount attracting a 15 per cent tax offset. For people aged 60 or over, the income payments are entirely tax free. In addition to that, the investment earnings within the pension are completely tax-free regardless of age. Step 2: After drawing down tax effective pension payments to cover living expenses, a person can then start contributing potentially large chunks of their before-tax salary back into super through salary sacrifice contributions. This aggressive salary sacrificing, combined with the above pension tax

benefits, can result in a dramatic boost to the overall retirement nest egg. It’s important to remember that there are concessional caps limiting the amount that can be salary sacrificed into super without incurring tax penalties. This cap is $25,000 per year for those under 50, and $50,000 per year for those aged 50 and over (until 30 June 2012). The amount counted towards this cap also includes an employer’s existing contributions, such as the minimum 9 per cent super guarantee. As noted earlier, a person must have also reached ‘preservation age’ before they can access their super to start a TTR pension. The following table can be used to work out a persons preservation age, based on what year a person was born. Preservation age Date of birth Preservation age Before 1 July 1960 55 1 July 1960 - 30 June 1961 56 1 July 1961 - 30 June 1962 57 1 July 1962 - 30 June 1963 58 1 July 1963 - 30 June 1964 59 From 1 July 1964 60 If people are interested in a Transition to Retirement strategy, they need to start preparing sooner rather than later to ensure that they can get started when they reach their preservation age. A good first step is to visit to a qualified financial planner who can advise on the best strategy to suit their individual needs. You may wish to consider some of the new ‘one-stop-shop’ super products which can take a person from working life right through to retirement without changing products. These streamlined products also allow people to easily transfer money from their super

to their allocated pension each year to maximise the benefits of the strategy. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. THE excitement is building. Registrations are now open for artists and designers to enter as competitors in this year’s Australian Body Art Carnivale, which will be held in Eumundi on May 12 and 13. One of the best body artists in the business is Nina M of ‘Nina&Brady’, and she’s already starting to think about how she’ll interpret the competition theme of ‘Under the Sea’. “This will be the third year I’ve competed at the Australian Body Art Carnivale,” says Nina. “And there really is nothing like the buzz of the Carnivale weekend. As an artist, it’s a thrill to be surrounded by so many other fabulous creative souls – doing what we love in bringing bodies to life with paint, colour and fun,” she says. “Every year there are competitors who’ve never tried body painting before – and really for any artist, it’s just applying painterly techniques to a different canvas – that of a human body!”, Nina says. “I really encourage artists out there to get involved too. It’s a truly unique opportunity, and something I think the Sunshine Coast is privileged to host. We are actually running some workshops leading up to the Carnivale for artists and hobbyists who have never painted on the body. The workshops should give you all the confidence you need to enter the competition.” Australian Body Art Carnivale Event Manager, Danielle Taylor says the event is centred on competitions in full body art (temporary paint – not tattoo) and

Enter your five minute flicks in film festival

NICA’s Catherine Cheung was the brainchild of EcoFlicks- the Sunshine Coast Environmental Film Festival. Catherine has now moved on but her legacy remains in what is possibly the most popular community environment film festival in Australia. Now in its third consecutive year, the Sunshine Coast Council supports EcoFlicks both financially and with continuous screenings at selected venues throughout Green June, following the official screening and awards presentation at World Environment Day (10th June) at University of the Sunshine Coast. Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) coordinates the event and has secured award sponsors as well as much needed technical assistance for participants by way of a free 2-day workshop from Qld School of Film and Television (QSFT). “The major program and award sponsors this year are once again SEQ Catchments,

the Original Eumundi Markets, and QSFT. It is also great to see other environmentally minded businesses jump on board and throw their support behind this event in getting the clean, green environment message out there- they include Home and Energy Solar, Noosa Avalon Farm Cottages, and Salon Salon Cooroy.” said NICA’s Project Coordinator, Maree Prior. “We now want lots of participantswannabe filmmakers and YouTube buffs to enter a 5 minute film in the festival. Details can be found on the NICA website under Projects. www.noosariver.com.au Go to EcoFlicks 2012 and download the Rules and Registration form.” “We are also thinking ahead and are interested hearing from 2013 sponsors who would like to discuss Naming Rights to promote this fantastic event; a YouTube contest and a dedicated website” Maree said.

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott THE trend of outsiders coming to Cooroy and committing offences has continued with a number of recent incidents. In the past, several offenders have been identified by the use of forensic evidence as committing offences in Cooroy whilst living well outside the Cooroy community. As we all know, the Cooroy community is a close knit highly proactive community who in the past have banded together to assist police in making Cooroy a hard target against criminals intent on causing havoc within this division. A recent spate of offences have occurred in the Noosa Hinterland area where several highly transient offenders have committing offences using stolen cars with false plates attached to visit the Cooroy, Eumundi and Pomona areas and commit offences. Police are asking for the public’s assistance to help identify suspicious behaviour in and around our CBD late at night and early in the morning. Increasingly brazen criminals are smashing their way through shop fronts to steal shop keepers hard earned money and property. This type of offence is generally very rare in Cooroy but my fear is that these offences will start to become more prevalent if we don’t stand up and report all suspicious activity to the police and make Cooroy a hard target against outsiders. Recently, a pair of offenders have been targeting businesses in this area by distracting shopkeepers away from their cash registers by requesting stock which may be at the rear of the shop or in a store room. Once the shop keeper is away from the till the complete

cash register is ripped from the counter and the offenders flee the scene. To stop this offence from occurring shop keepers should be aware not to be distracted away from their till and if at all possible please screw or bolt the till to the counter and make sure the till is locked at all times. The suspects for these offences are a male and female in there early 20’s working together so please report any suspicious activity and any vehicle that may be associated with them. The two suspects have links to this area so be highly vigilant and assist police wherever possible. Over the past 6 months our burglary offences have been on the decrease thanks to some excellent police work and information from the local community in apprehending a number of juveniles for these offences. The offence of most concern is that of burglaries occurring on dwellings in the rural areas of Tinbeerwah and also areas in the vicinity of Gumboil road. Offenders are randomly picking properties and driving up driveways in the hope of finding a vacant house so they can go about their evil business. If a person answers the door they will then come up with some lame excuse before driving away hoping that their activity won’t be reported to the police. Can I strongly suggest that if you are the victim of such an event report the matter asap to the police along with car registration details and descriptions of the offenders. Whilst on the subject of the community helping the police I would like to strongly acknowledge the committee of “The Forest Star” which is a community News Letter/News

Paper servicing the Lake MacDonald and Forest Acres areas which seeks to foster a strong community spirit with residents living in that area. In the past, this community newsletter has been very proactive with assisting police with various problems in the area so once again the old quote comes through and that is….”A Police Service is only as effective as the Community in which it serves” so thanks and keep up the good work guys. The Cooroy Blue Light Disco is entering its 5th year of operation and shows no signs of slowing down. Police more often than not have contact with young people due to some sort of adverse actions on behalf of the child involved and the police are called upon to play the enforcement roll in trying to deal with the Child’s bad behaviour. One of the main reasons the Cooroy police volunteer and run the Blue Light Discos in our own time is so as the kids of Cooroy can have positive interaction with the police and learn to trust and look up to the police as positive role models. Sometimes, all the negative contacts with kids can cause a police officer to get a tad jaded around the edges but I must say that attending and supervising these discos is a huge shot in the arm and is a constant reminder that by far the vast majority of our kids are great to be around. I know that the other volunteers feel the same and the energy that the kids give off during the night is infectious and well worth the price of giving up a Saturday night to supervise at the disco.

Lew loves delivering

Div 12 Cr Lew Brennan LEW Brennan is standing for Division 12 in the council elections and despite representing his community on council since 1997 he still doesn’t see himself as a politician, but rather “just one of the community having a go.” He and his wife Maurene have been residents in the hinterland for 35 years and Lew has worked tirelessly for the community that he is so passionate about starting way back with the Cooran P&C when his sons went to school. “I love this place, and I love the people and I get the biggest kick out of delivering on our dreams and goals.” Lew’s list of achievements is a long one and the last four years has been particularly fruitful. “Getting the Cooroy Library built was a 10 year struggle, but now we have the most beautiful and functional piece of infrastructure in the region, and I see it as a monument to the strength of character of the Cooroy community who went through some tough times. There are many more BIG projects around the whole of Division 12 too. The Butler Street bi-pass in Tewantin works really

well and has taken traffic pressure off the school and the town centre, and it looks a treat. “I finally got the money for the Cooroy Sewerage plant, we got the plans finalised and just as we started work on it Unitywater took it over and will have it completed by the end of year ... no more smell, hooooraaay. “Small fish are sweet and the Cooran streetscape turned the little village into one of the prettiest towns in the region. The Tewantin foreshore redevelopment was another long awaited project and with the brand new amenities block, spray park for kids, carpark for boaties and visitors it looks a treat. The Tewantin streetscape is near completion too. “The Sportsmans Way, Jarrah Street extension is nearing completion after years of requests and planning by the community, and it allowed me to build a new oval for the Cooroy sports complex and the thousand of kids who play there. “We were able to get some bitumen on Dr Pages Road in Kin Kin and also managed to get a skatepark in town too, and by all accounts it is ‘going off.’ We put the finishing touches on Pomona’s streescape in Reserve Street which really finished off the towns entrance and we gave Pomona Community House a hand to get the ‘Mens Shed’ project up. “The new playground in Apex park has turned out really well and the kids are loving it. It has lifted the whole look and feel of the park and the precinct. I’m currently working on a new carpark opposite the library and I’m also about to start on a pedestrian crossing at the Maple Square shops across to the library. This will slow traffic entering Maple Street too. Also in the pipeline is a new jetty down at Boreen Point, and I really want to help the Pomona Fire Station relocate so it doesn’t get flooded all the time. “It’s a busy life, particularly when I tackle Economic Development and business support for the whole region, but I love delivering on our communities dreams, especially because our community plays such a strong partnership role with our terrific team at council.” Where else would you live?” ... nowhere else according to Lew.

Cooroy Scouts HI to all. With all of this crazy weather that we’ve had, we hope that everyone is safe and have been looking out for each other. Our 3 Cub leaders have been doing a fantastic job and the kids seem to all be enjoying themselves. They have been learning all about their DR.ABC, and other fun things such as making lava lamps. Unfortunately the camp planned at Dunethin Rock has had to be postponed twice due to wet and soggy weather and grounds. Hopefully it will be

third time lucky after easter for all the eager kids. The Scouts have also been a very busy group, learning about electricity, more on camping essentials, and cooking. We send a big thank-you to Ken for our new sign for the Old Den. It looks fantastic. news Candidate for Division 12 takes aim at Council

COOROY RAG

DIVISION 12 candidate Tony Wellington is not happy with the amalgamated Council. “We are paying much more than we were under the former Noosa Council,” he says, “and getting far less in return.” “So many Division 12 residents have come to me complaining about poor services. Gravel roads are not being maintained the way they used to be. Parks and gardens are receiving less attention. Drains are not being maintained, sometimes with devastating results.” “There has been a range of opinions relating to Council’s response to the recent rain events. But in the normal scheme of things, most people are dissatisfied with the new mega-council as compared to the former Noosa Council.” “It has been reported that we are now paying 52% more in rates than we were four years ago. The early rates discount has been halved from 10% to 5%. Yet basic services are being cut.” “Take Council’s waste management operations as a prime example. The longstanding kerbside rubbish collection has been scrapped, the free tip dockets for ratepayers have gone, and tip fees have increased. Yet Council budget documents from last year note that the Waste Management Program is making a profit of more than $7 million. So why has the service been scaled back? Perhaps the real answer is because Maroochy never had the service that Noosa enjoyed, so we have been dumbed-down to meet the Maroochy standard.” “Meanwhile, Joe Jurisevic has noted that the volume of trash being dumped

Drysdale Funerals was established in 1989 by Don and June Drysdale to provide a special level of care for the residents of the entire Sunshine Coast. in local bushland has reached crisis point, with the recent Clean Up Australia Day event finding more rubbish than ever before. That is arguably a direct product of Council policy.” “I am also receiving many complaints about difficulties dealing with Council staff. Where once we could either telephone or visit the Tewantin Chambers and get a quick response, we are now dealing with staff well removed from the area, often with little understanding of local needs, who can take days to respond.” “The best way out of the current mess is to de-amalgamate. That doesn’t mean we have to go back to what we had before. We can actually have a new Council that is much better than the former Noosa Council: more efficient, and certainly more responsive to its community. Ideally it would become an exemplar in community consultation. I want to put the ‘local’ back into local government.” “If elected to the Sunshine Coast Council I will work to reinstate both the kerbside clean-up service and the full 10% rates dis-

Tony Wellington count. More importantly, I will ensure that if we are de-amalgamated, the Noosa region, and hinterland in particular, get a fair deal.”

news

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Deputy Local Controller, Sunshine Coast North IT has been a very busy time in our region during late February and early March. First we had the very destructive storm which ripped the heart out of the centre of Cooroy, and tore down innumerable trees putting them through roofs, across driveways and in all sorts of places creating havoc with access to and from properties. Three days after that we had enormous rainfall in a very short time, spreading from Tewantin and Noosaville, through to the hinterland towns of Cooroy and Pomona. Then a week later, more intense rain fell on the coast and in the hinterland. In the aftermath of the wild storm on the Tuesday night we were lucky enough to have SES teams from Sunshine Coast Central and Sunshine Coast South come to assist and had five teams on the shop roofs in town for 6 hours before they were fully tarped and able to be left secure. Chainsaws were buzzing over the next few days clearing debris from our community.

The next events, heavy downpourings in a short time, left a lot of local flooding, which needed a large number of sandbags. Some streets we were unable to access, but luckily Council was able to deposit pallets of sandbags at nearby spots, so residents were able to help themselves and sandbag their own premises. This will probably happen more and more in the future, so it is a good idea to prepare for these floods by keeping a stock of sandbags on hand. We usually have some at our facilities in Cooroy, Tewantin, Pomona and Boreen Pt so a phone call to 132 500 will let us know you need them, and we can arrange for you to come and pick some up. We were contacted by a number of residents saying they had called their insurance companies who had told them to contact the SES to get a job number before they could lodge a claim. This is not correct. We are an emergency service, and there to help you in times of emergency

such as abnormal weather events as we have recently experienced. We do not have tradespeople who are able to fix your problems. We can use items such as tarps, ropes, sandbags, silicon, black plastic and gaffer tape to put in place emergency repairs that should get you through until you are able to get someone out to permanently fix your damaged property. Of-

ten we find when we get out to leaking roofs that these are caused by blocked gutters, generally blocked by leaves and sometimes by items such as tennis balls, which cause water to leak into roof spaces and then drip into homes. Unfortunately at times, the only way to solve this problem is to puncture the ceiling and let the water flow into the living spaces. Definitely in these instances, pre-

vention is better than the cure. We have had a number of enquiries from potential new members and our next intake will be in July. The water came up underneath to a height of about 2 feet in the old scale. Luckily nothing was lost. There was a lot of mud and water which with the help of many volunteers has been cleaned out. SURE to surprise and captivate both young and old, Being Human is a colourful exhibition of acrylic paintings and ceramic sculptures created by hinterland artist John Petrie. Opening March 17 at the Pomona Railway Gallery, this experimental body of work is not mainstream art; it’s mentalist! In this vibrant display of impulsive and intuitive emotion, Petrie takes his viewers on a visual exploration into the philosophy of mentalism – that mind is the only true reality and objects of knowledge exist solely as aspects of the mind’s awareness. ‘As no man can enter the same river

Pomona

twice,’ says Petrie, ‘all phenomena exist as temporary, fleeting projections within the mind of the perceiver, in an eternal now.’ Petrie isolates that moment and, with wild abandon and raw immediacy, playfully reconnects the viewer with their own inner, imagined landscapes. John Petrie imbues his work with a sense of humour and many pieces in this collection will make you laugh out loud. Being Human portrays the world through the eyes, emotions and mind of a human being. Running until April 19, Being Human will bring some lighthearted fun and colour to everyone’s day.

HARDWARE FAMILY, Friends & the community of Pomona gathered on Sunday 5th February at the Pomona Bowls Club to celebrate the life of a good friend and mate, Darryn Denton. The morning was organised for the community to come together to remember and celebrate the life of this wonderful and funny loving person. His friendly personality and infectious smile touched so many people. Darryn’s sister from Canada, Annette, attended the morning along with many close friends and approx 150 local communtiy members. The formalities of the morning were very brief with MC Steve Hiditch tellling a few butcher jokes followed by a short story of Darryn’s life. A few words from Annette, Toni and Al Gitsham and then a few laughs were had during a DVD presenation. Family and a few close friends concluded the morning by releasing 49 balloons (Darryn’s age) in Darryn’s honour. A few drinks and morning tea was then enjoyed by all who attended. A big thankyou to everyone who contributed in some way in making this day for Darryn so special and memorible for everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.

Design a seat for the River Park at Kenilworth KENILWORTH Arts Council members were delighted recently to receive a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council to call for submissions from artists and designers for the design and build of a seat for the new park on the Mary River at the end of Charles Street in Kenilworth. This park was created for public use by the Sunshine Coast Council towards the end of last year. It is to prevent vehicular vandalism to the area as a result of the discovery that the endangered Mary River Turtle and other Mary River turtles were nesting there. The design of the seat, which is to be sited in the park above flood level, is to reflect the environmental issues and wildlife of the area; especially the endangered species that live in the river – the Mary River Turtle and the Lungfish. IN the tiny town of Kin Kin, a homebased business is recreating the traditional art of hand book binding. Ian and Lorraine Bates have, for the past ten years, been building up their small business of book restoration, Sage Old Books. While Lorraine is involved with the resewing and recovering of the books, Ian works on paper repairs and finishing, which often involves traditional gold tooling using a blocking press and lead or brass type, or hand-held tools. “A great deal of our work is taken up in restoration of family Bibles, which are of great sentimental value to their owners, and which, when restored, can be handed down to future generations. As well as restoring books, we are also able to replace missing covers with leather or cloth, and to make boxes and enclosures to protect precious books from the elements and insect

damage.” As part of their commitment to preserving the skills of hand book binding, Lorraine and Ian are committed to passing on their knowledge. For the past four years, they have been instructors for the Queensland Bookbinders’ Guild, running regular classes in Brisbane. Now, they have brought their classes closer to home and run regular weekends at the Pomona Community Centre. The next course is filling rapidly, and will be held over the weekend of March 31/April 1. Over the weekend, students make from scratch a beautiful, traditionally hand sewn journal, and also learn ways in which to bind and repair their own books. To participate in this fun and rewarding weekend, contact Lorraine and Ian on 54854166, email sage@sageold.com.au or via their website www.sageold.com.au

National Youth Week is coming to town ROLL up! Roll up! Roll up! Pomona & District Community House in conjunction with Dept. of Communities is presenting ‘Out There & Loving It’ – a series of free Circus Skills workshops for youth 11 years and over. Event spokesperson, Heather Manders, says the ‘Out There & Living It’ workshops will be a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop some great skills and to showcase their talent. The workshops will be facilitated by Andrew and Wendy Flanagan from Sunshine Unicycles, and Brad and Kate Smith from Clownman. Danielle Gonsal will be teaching hoola hoops. All activities will be available at each workshop. Andrew and Wendy recommend doing the unicycling at each workshop to gain some proficiency.

Participants must bring their own helmets and wear closed in shoes. “Our event reflects the great enthusiasm and support for local activities”, says Heather. The workshops have been made possible with support from the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council and our own young volunteers. A workshop preview will be held at the Pomona Markets on Saturday, April 14th, 9.30am. Workshop Dates: At Pomona memorial Hall on Thursday April 19th, 45.30pm, Friday, April 20th, 4-5.30pm, Sunday, April 22nd, 3-4.30pm; Thursday, April 26th, 4-5.30pm; Friday, April 27th, 4-5.30pm. COOROY RAG

THE debut of “The Songs of the Haight Ashbury Stage Show” in July 2011 drew the largest crowds Stokers Siding Hall has ever seen. Those unable to fit into the Hall created a mini festival outside as the” Hymns of a Generation” were celebrated by the best musicians in the Rainbow Region. Performances in Nimbin and Byron in December 2012 filled the Venues with capacity crowds who experienced a psychedelic “ huge night of fun” with this exciting production that is going places! The Haight Ashbury is a street intersection in San Francisco. During the conservative America of the 1950’s it

was a rundown but quaint area. Its cheap rents attracted the artists of the Beat generation such as Jack Keroauc and a small artistic community began. Using every Art form this bohemian generation expressed a new way of being “American”. As the 50’s rolled into the 60’s the area began attracting the disaffected youth of America, who identified with this liberating way of thinking and living. Artists, Poets, Rebels, Spiritualists, Revolutionaries and Musicians flocked to the area. The Haight Ashbury became a vibrant centre of free expression, it has been likened to a Renaissance whose effects are still

resonating today. The rejection of conservative American values empowered a new generation and gave voice to those who demanded change, evolution and an end to the Vietnam War. The famous catchcry, “Make love not war” was born. Radio embraced the psychedelic music of the Haight Ashbury and a wave of change swept from San Francisco, across America, and from there across the Planet. The Songs of the Haight Ashbury Stage Show is a celebration of the music of Canned Heat, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Country Joe and the Fish, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane,

Joni Mitchell and more. S Sorrensen, renowned author, comedian and poet is the Ringmaster, interspersing the songs with hilarious anecdotes and stories from the era. James T, who spent 10 years in Canned Heat, will play the songs he knows so well, an American expat whose career highlights include sharing the stage with John Lee Hooker. Multi award winning Blues diva Lil’Fi will sing Janis Joplin with an unique authority that can only come from paying her dues and living the Blues. Connor Cleary, hailed as one of the region’s most impressive young guitarists, breathes Jimi Hendrix from every cell and is electrifying. Bill Jacobi’s tramp-roots style will conjour Country Joe, Arlo Guthrie and Dylan. Worldfolk songbird Andrea Soler will channel the sweet purity of Joni Mitchell and mystical punk Diva Diana Anaid will sing Grace Slick as only one who has been down the rabbit hole can. This is the authentic Haight

Ashbury experience and not to be missed, 8pm Saturday, March 24 at the Pomona Majestic Theatre. Tickets from the Majestic Box office 5485 2330.

Food for life ON Monday 12 March, Surinder of Safron Namaste together with Pomona Community House and Pomona Medicworx, organised a seminar held at Saffron Namaste on Food and Medicine. Pelvic floor exercises for men! MOST women are aware of the importance of performing pelvic floor exercises, but did you know that strong pelvic floor muscles are essential for men’s health as well? There are a number of issues for which pelvic floor muscle exercises can help, but let’s start with the one that is most likely to get your attention. Strong pelvic floor muscles can help overcome erectile dysfunction. Yes, you read correctly. Not only is it safe and easy, but pelvic floor exercises are much cheaper than medications such as Viagra. Even if you don’t have erectile dysfunction, increasing your pelvic floor strength can increase the awareness of sexual sensations and therefore enjoyment. Pelvic floor muscles can also help men who find that they “dribble” after urinating and are strongly recommended for men after prostatectomy. Many men find that they have bladder

control issues and erectile dysfunction post surgery, and both of these symptoms can be improved with pelvic floor exercises. It is not only surgery that damages or weakens these muscles. Chronic coughing, lifting of heavy loads or straining due to constipation can also result in a weak pelvic floor. So how do you fix the problem? Most men are able to perform their exercises correctly after basic instruction from a qualified therapist. If more help is required, there are DVD’s, muscle stimulation units and biofeedback which can be used as well. Like any problem, the sooner it is addressed, the easier it is to fix. So if you would like to know more, contact your health professional today. Craig and Rebecca Steele own and operate Hinteractive Physio in Cooroy. They can be contacted on 5442 5556.

Overcoming Osteoporosis EVERY 5 to 6 minutes someone is admitted to an Australian hospital with an osteoporotic fracture. About 50% of women and 33% of men over 60 years will have an osteoporotic fracture in Australia. That’s some pretty startling statistics but Osteoporosis can be prevented and the risk factors for fractures can be reduced. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become fragile and brittle, leading to a higher risk of fractures (breaks or cracks) than in normal bone. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone thickness. As a result, even a minor bump or accident can cause serious fractures. Any bone can be affected by osteoporosis, but the most common sites are the hip, spine, wrist, ribs, pelvis and upper arm. Osteoporosis usually has no signs or symptoms until a fracture happens. Fractures due to osteoporosis can lead to changes in posture (eg developing a stoop or hump in your back), muscle weakness, loss of height and bone deformity of the spine. Fractures can lead to chronic pain, disability, loss of independence and even premature death. Two thirds of fractures of the spine are not identified or treated, even though they nearly all cause pain and some disability. Often people believe that symptoms like back pain, height loss or rounding of the spine are just due to old age. However, for many

people, osteoporotic fractures can be prevented, or at least your risk of having further fractures can be greatly reduced. It is regular physical activity on a long-term basis that plays a particularly important role in maintaining healthy bones. Exercise can maintain and increase bone strength by increasing bone mass or by slowing agerelated bone loss. Muscle strength is also increased, which is important for supporting the joints and preventing falls. Exercise has also been shown to improve co-ordination and balance, which helps to prevent falls and to improve general physical health and well-being. But it is important that your exercise is regular and ongoing because any positive gains in bone strength are lost when you stop exercising. It is never to late to start. And it is important to talk to your health care professional before commencing any activities as someone who has established osteoporosis (one or more fractures) may not be able to do as many types of activities as someone without osteoporosis. The team from Make a Difference Health and Fitness can work with you to develop an exercise regime that can help prevent Osteoporosis or if you already have osteoporosis they can help with a program to speed your rehabilitation and prevent future fractures. Give them a call on 5442 6179 or check out their website on www.madhf.com.au.

Enjoying better vision with better lenses FINDING your optimal vision solution begins with questions about your lifestyle according to local optometrists Heather McLeod and Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy. “Work, sport, driving, studying and even leisure activities all place different demands on your vision. How you spend your day will determine which visual solutions are best for you” says Jenny. “So when your optometrist asks you about what work you do, sports you play and what hobbies you enjoy, they are not trying to be intrusive but more likely seeking to learn more about your visual requirements to better advise you”. Matching the right lens attributes to your vision and lifestyle needs is the key to achieving great vision. As spectacle lenses generally look the same, it can be difficult to appreciate the differences that can exist both in terms of form and function. “There are many differences between lenses “adds Heather. “The quality, design and lens material will impact on visual performance, comfort, durability, aesthetic appeal and safety or a combination of all of these.” “As optometry@cooroy is an independent practice, we have complete freedom to recommend products that provide the best solution for you as opposed to selecting from a limited range specified by corporate guidelines” says Jenny, “We believe when it comes to your spectacle lenses, there are vast differences in quality and we won’t compromise your vision with inferior products. After all your eyes deserve nothing less.” optometry@cooroy is located at 62 Maple Street, Cooroy. For more information or an appointment call 5442 5555. www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

Grieving? Feeling overwhelmed or unwell? Stressed at work, in the home or in relationship? Harassed or bullied at work or in school? Having difficulty getting your point across, don’t feel heard? Can’t move beyond a bad experience or trauma? Someone once told me that there are no problems only solutions! Let me help you find a way through the obstacles that stand in the way of your living a peaceful, satisfying life! “Want to be a more effective parent, partner, friend, son or daughter? There are some simple yet effective techniques, tools and strategies that can bring about change, build resilience and self confidence and feelings of self worth. Are you holding on to trauma, guilt or shame? I have met with people who have carried burdens from the past, who have kept their stories close to their chest for fear of being rejected, ridiculed or abandoned by their loved ones or they are so ashamed they

believe that no one can possibly understand them. Each one of them found that sharing their stories and learning new ways of thinking about the event, themselves and life, made them stronger, more capable and determined to live a richer life. “Taking the first step is often the hardest and I commend anyone for taking it as it takes courage to reach out for, and accept help. Rest assured that you will be treated with respect, in a safe, confidential, empathic and respectful environment. Planning equals protection WE often plan ahead for the unexpected in areas such as our homes, with health care, and through wills that protect our families, but often there are no preparations in place against the costs of arranging a funeral. Finding funds for a funeral at short notice is the last thing someone wants to worry about when they have lost a loved one, but there is a way to make provision for these costs that also gives you a range of other benefits. “In my experience prepaying your funerals gives you the protection of purchasing the funeral you want, fixing it in today’s prices, and protecting your family against inflation. Prepaying also helps cushion your family from the difficult emotions often involved in arranging a funeral because your wishes are known, recorded and paid for,” says Carol Matheson of Drysdale Funerals, Tewantin. Drysdale Funerals are your local funeral directors. They are an approachable team and have more than 50 years’ experience in meeting the needs of families and individuals, including prepaying funerals.

Planning ahead with Drysdale Funerals also ensures your funeral will be delivered with all of the care, experience and attention to detail that has made Drysdale Funerals such a well-regarded team of funeral directors on the Sunshine Coast. “People know the difference a Drysdale funeral can make to the family and friends that are left behind. They also know that the services we arrange are a great comfort for those who attend. “Prepaying with Drysdale Funerals gives you real peace of mind. You know we’re going to be there when the time comes and we will give all our care to friends and family members who need guidance and comfort,” Carol says. Drysdale Funerals is also committed to being there for your family long after the funeral is over. “We hold regular memorial services at special times of the year, like Christmas, so people who have lost a loved one can connect with their memories and share their feelings at important occasions. “We also host Grief courses throughout the year, because our experience in this area can make all the difference to someone who has questions.”

ONE can avail so many different kinds of exercises for pain in the back and these are highly beneficial for dealing with back pain. Apart from this, back pain can also be treated through physiotherapy, which helps to deal with the core problems of the pain in the back. Basically the problem of back pain is a perennial one and happens to people of any age. However the middle aged people and the older groups are more prone to these kinds of pains. But back pain also brings various kinds of problems with it and thus it becomes necessary to deal with it. Also you should be aware of the various kinds of causes of back pains and also solutions and treatments for the same. Some forms of back pain can actually have you bed ridden for days and can make you feel like crying. If these are not treated on time it can lead to further deterioration of your condition and hence it is best to avoid the problems of back pain through various kinds of remedial solutions. Back pain can further be classified into pain of the lower back, middle back and the upper back. Most of the times, lower back affects people and the reason for the same is that part gets the most strain during wrong sitting and exercising postures. The solutions for dealing with these kinds of pains include physiotherapy, massages and other related exercises. The back pain remedies are treatments like doing pilates exercises, controlling your weight, sitting in the right posture and other related methods. Stability and fitness of the lower back is dependant on the strength and po-

sition of the vertebral bodies and inter-vertebral disks, which support them. Painkillers that can be taken for these pains include Aspirin, Ibuprofen and acetaminophen and these have been proven to be useful in relieving back pain in initial stages. Along with physiotherapy you can apply cold pack on the affected area in the first 24-48 hours. Hot packs and cold packs can also be given alternatively and you should avoid sudden turning or bending movements. Exercises like pilates, swimming and aqua aerobics help to exercise without hurting the back further. Most of the pain is generally felt in the lumbar and the sacral region and thus you should avoid the exercises which strain these areas. A sprain in the muscles of the spine can be the most common cause of backache and thus you need to implement caution for avoiding injuring these areas. In this reference you should start doing pilates exercises for getting relief from back pain. Physiotherapy and massages help to heal the pain in the back. You should make sure that you keep the back straight, and avoid picking up heavy weights and making sudden movements. Jerking and running should be avoided if you are suffering from back pain and during this period you should focus on light exercises and stretching to get some relief from back pain and make sure you don’t let the back get stiff. For more information or an appointment with a physiotherapist, please phone INTOUCH PHYSIO on 5442 5666.

Variety concert benefits local charities PROCEEDS raised from another successful variety concert organised by the indomitable Joan Boyce and Cooroy RSL’s Del Pain (pictured back right) benefited Kabara Aged Care and two other local charities, Eden Rehabilitation Centre and Riding for the Disabled. Residents and staff at Kabara were delighted with the new equipment they were able to purchase with the funds. Over 100 people from near and far attended the concert and were entertained by some of our talented local artists. Joan and Del would like to everyone, including the artists, attendees and local businesses who contributed to make the event such a success.
