The cougars fielded well and successfully defended their score by bowling Tewantin Noosa out for 61 runs. It was a great team effort with every fielder contributing to a much deserved Grand Final win. Congratulations to Coach Mike Long and the Under 12A Cougars!!! COOROY RAG The confusing crystal ball reigns supreme Prediction is extremely difficult, especially for the future, it is said, Yet our pollies have produced a prediction, for the 40 years ahead, It’s really quite amazing, their vision usually, only goes to the next elections Yet they believe they can forecast the lives of the next two generations. Society is filled with drugs, and booze, ugly domestic violence, Yet no politician seems to regard those things, as urgent political requirements. The important news in the headlines was not the Middle East Campaign, But some over-paid star footballer, who has been linked with illegal cocaine. There’s so much wrong in the world today, our legislation is totally confusing, Let’s work on fixing today’s social problems, not the future’s unknown bemusing. No one seems to be governing, Parliament is filled with childish screaming brats, Yelling at each other, like brawling Kilkenny cats. If we have another war, our politicians will be busy, Asking the enemy to delay things, as our navy’s in a tizzy. “Please wait until our subs are ready, we’ll be as quick as we can, There are only five to be finished, but they have to come down from Japan”. But we must not be too critical, the Intergenerational Report is here, To brighten up the future, and bring the nation good cheer, In 40 years we may celebrate the finish of the Bruce Highway Even perhaps our very own Brisbane to Noosa Railway, And Sydney may see its new Airport and its first runway, Just in time to land the pigs, who’ve been flying around for many a day. Isaac to perform at Cooroy Fusion

CIRCLE your calendars folks! In what is certainly the biggest signing for the Cooroy Fusion Festival

for 2015, Cooroy’s own singer, songwriter and multitalented instrumentalist, Isaac McGovern has

announced he will grace the stage on Saturday, 9 May. Shooting to stardom in last year’s hit

television series, The Voice, Isaac will be the headline act at this year’s festival, performing with his three piece band on stage in the entertainment tent proudly sponsored by the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Isaac will also be conducting a song writing workshop in the Butter Factory Arts Centre as part of the festival. There is a good chance he will have a story or two to share about his experiences on The Voice and maybe even of his coach, Joel Madden. You simply can’t get any more local than

Isaac - a young man who is proud to still call the hinterland his home and is very much looking forward to performing in front of his hometown crowd. His performance will also be a way of thanking the many hundreds of locals who voted to keep him on The Voice during the last series. It will also be your chance to be entertained by one of Australia’s emerging talents. To find out more information about Cooroy Fusion Festival and all that is on offer in 2015, simply go to cooroyfusion festival.com.au.

It’s a bloody good idea to donate YEAR 11 student leaders Karree Lindenmayer, Andy Parsons, Ruby Tucker and Courtney Robinson represented Noosa District State High School at an information session run by Club Red on blood donation and awareness raising with many other student leaders from Sunshine Coast schools at Maroochydore recently. The students learnt about the history of

the Red Cross, and were surprised by the fact that the red cross symbol’s universal meaning is “don’t shoot” and areas in war-torn countries are assigned the symbol as safe refuges. Karree, Andy, Ruby and Courtney are keen to get behind promoting blood donation and raising awareness of its importance at Noosa District State High School through a variety of ventures and projects they will

discuss and ‘flesh out’ at the next Student Council meeting. The student leaders will also promote blood donation at year level and full school parades. The blood bank van will be at NDSHS later in the year, and Year 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity to give blood and potentially save the lives of three other people.

THE end of last year saw good progress for our rural communities, and to find out what is in store this year we caught up with Cr Sandy Bolton for an update. “2014 was certainly busy, and the year produced a number of outcomes that residents may not be aware of, so here is a brief glimpse! Council has submitted a number of planning amendments relating to rural endeavours such as farm gate stalls and visitor accommodation that are now with the State Government, and can be viewed on the Council website. The Cooroy RV stop is going through its MCU process, and there is now day parking for RV’S in the front of the Library. The Noosa Agribusiness Network (NAN) was formed and with 2 sessions out of the way there has been some good outcomes including a united voice to lobby regarding rural concerns. The Country Noosa forum with Dick and Rod have been going from strength to strength hosting field days, providing online information and assistance, and increasing their membership daily. The 2014 Regional Food Conference in NSW focused on environmentally friendly and sustainable industries for country communities, and Sandy attended with Noosa Council Economic Development officer Carolyn Bullen. She reported that topics included regenerative farming, eco tourism, education and health industries “buy local /love food/waste less” initiatives and opportunities for job creation in emerging sectors. “The main challenges presented at this conference was legislation and consumer purchase choices. The Australian Fair Food Alliance are

actively lobbying to bring some common sense into this “red tape”, however the role that consumers play in determining farming practices and the sustainability of local producers can only be made possible by residents themselves, and is an Australia wide issue.” On the event front, The Country Noosa Forum hosted a free workshop in Holistic Mixed Farming on 29th January at the Cooroy CWA as a primer for the Joel Salatin Workshop that was held Feb 28. Joel is known as the “most famous family farmer” on the planet, and over 230 people came away with the secrets to successful polyface farming. “This was a fabulous and inspirational event for many reasons. Regenerative farming methods open a new door for both Noosa and Australian farmers to work hand in hand with the environment, creating a wide range of partnerships and opportunities, create local jobs and food security.” It won’t be long until 2016, where Noosa Council will commence the drafting of a new planning scheme. What does this mean to our residents? “The planning scheme underpins the decision making process, and is endorsed by residents. It basically “maps” what land can be used for what purposes through zoning, and from there sets the parameters for the activities that occur, from building a house to farming lettuce. It is really important that everyone get involved in this, as it sets the framework for the next decade in our communities” To assist residents in their decision making during consultation phases, Council staff are currently putting together an informative “roadshow” to answer those questions that you always wanted to ask

about the what, where and how of Council operations. Dates to be advised, however in the meantime if you would like to look at the current Noosa Plan, go to http:// www.noosa.qld.gov.au/ view-the-noosa-plan Council is also currently drafting its 5 year capital works program as well as

IT appears, rightly so, that when a vehicle does the ‘wrong thing’ by a cyclist on our roads, it becomes very public. Therefore I wish to share with you and your readers a recent event that took place with cyclists doing the ‘wrong thing”. This is just one of many times this has happened to myself and many others who frequent this piece of road. This time I was fortunate (or unfortunate?) to have passengers in the vehicle with me who were able to record the event, most other times I travel alone along here. To those road cyclists who choose to ride along Louis Bazo road between 6 mile creek and Boreen point. (and I am sure many other places). As this road is narrow and has many blind corners, with most of the road having double white lines along it, clearly indicating it is not a safe place and illegal to overtake another vehicle on. Why is it that you chose to ride 2 abreast therefore making overtaking at any stage difficult and dangerous, as by law we as a motorist are required to give 1.5m clearance to make overtaking a cyclist safe, and that I think is fair enough, and I am more than happy to comply. After encountering such an issue this morning on my way into Noosa, I was forced to sit behind about 10 -12 cyclists for about 3 or 4 kms due to oncoming traffic or insufficient vision or space to overtake safely. I had left myself plenty of time to get to my destination, so there was no urgency to take any unnecessary risks, (not that, that is the preferred option EVER!) So whilst following the cyclists, they became irate with being followed for such a length time, at no stage did they try to go single file to make overtaking at all possible. So when there did become an option to overtake cyclists going 2 abreast, they decided they would ride 3 and 4 abreast across the whole of the road, there for making it even more difficult for me to overtake ... Really?

Do they not consider the option that I may just have a go anyway and if I do happen to have the misfortune of hitting another oncoming vehicle that they will most certainly be cleaned up in the carnage as well. Is it really that difficult for them for a short space of time to ride single file so cars may overtake safely for both the car and the cyclist, particularly on certain roads. If anyone has the answer please share with me, as it seems that staying behind them seems to upset them, and overtaking close to them to avoid hitting oncoming traffic upsets them ... I am really getting tired of being abused when trying to do the right thing. What is great, is when the cyclists and the drivers of the vehicles both show a bit of consideration and common sense ... it works brilliantly. Kelley Jennings, Pomona

news Budgeting for a nest egg Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WHAT a wonderful time of year Easter is – I hope you have plans to celebrate and relax with family and friends. Now that Easter is upon us again, how many of us are thinking about a different type of egg - the nest egg? We all strive to save our hard earned money, which is getting more and more difficult with life’s ever increasing expenses. There will be many key times in our lives that will make us think about our budget. Like starting a new job, getting married, buying a home, saving for a holiday and many more. Any time is a great time to think about your budget and planning to grow that little nest egg. Many of us struggle with budgets; they’re too hard, too complicated and too restrictive. A budget is a great tool to use to help start a savings plan and take more control of your money. This will also show you if you are living within your means and not spending more than you earn! Most banks will offer help with budgets, whether it’s an online

calculator that you key in your information, or a budget planner you record your own details. These need to be used to help track your income and expenses. For your income, take into account all of your wages, pensions, family payments, interest, dividends etc. That is usually the easy part, knowing what we earn. The expenses can be harder to work out. Put these into sections such as necessary expenses for your usual bills and non essential for other items such as entertainment, holidays, treats etc. To accurately work out your expenses, use your bank account statements, credit card statements or your bills to find out what you spend your money on. Remember those other bills that may come in less frequently, such as rates or car registrations. Think about having other bills as monthly deductions, rather than an annual bill, such as insurances. Once you have these completed, you can then work out your disposable income, this is the amount left over

once you have allowed for all of your expenses to be paid. This can then be used to save regularly. Your bank can help you choose an account that’s right for you to save your extra money. Depending upon your situation, this may be in an offset account if you have a home loan or in a special savings account that will pay more interest. Remember to allow yourself some flexibility within your budget and be realistic. It’s no use having a great budget on paper if in reality it can’t work. If you would like to discuss your budget or a savings account, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards @bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY Computers has new owners, William and Caroline Bell. They are so excited to have reopened the doors on Monday 9th March. They

know the importance of this business to the hinterland area and are ready to help out. Although they are fairly new to Cooroy, only

having lived here for 3 years, they have always lived on the Sunshine Coast. Caroline has a strong retail background having

worked at Sam’s Warehouse Noosaville for nearly 8 years when the company ceased trading. She has a great understanding of finances and customer service. William has 9 years of IT experience having started working in the industry while he was still at school. He has always tinkered with computers and loves a challenge when a PC does something very out of the ordinary. Be prepared for new adventures

PARENTS and carers are always on the lookout for great new adventures for their kids that are safe and fun. So if you came across an organisation that lists their mission statement as: ‘Engaging and inspiring young Australians to develop confidence, resilience and leadership’, you’d be keen to find out more, right? And, if that organisation’s foundations

began at the beginning of the 20th century and had a national member base of more than 50,000 Australia wide and the biggest youth movement in the world, you’d be more than curious to find out more, wouldn’t you? Well, you’ve probably guessed by now the organisation is Scouts Australia. But, did you there is a Scout Den right here in Cooroy? It’s powered by an exciting group of local volunteers

and parents and they’re off to an exciting start in 2015. Sally Clarke is the Group Leader and was keen to continue growing the group’s numbers. So last year, she decided to write to the Cooroy Community Bank branch last year and ask for some financial support. After considering the request, the branch’s Customer Relationship Officer, Karl Doss, made it a night to remember late last month when he visited a Cooroy Scout Group meeting and presented them with a cheque for $1,000. Sally said the timing just couldn’t be better with the plans they have in the coming months. “We’re just so excited about this sponsorship. It’s given us the opportunity to purchase three new ultralight tents for our Scouts to take on our three-day, 30 kilometre unassisted hike over Easter. Each scout can only carry a quarter of their body weight and they must carry everything they need to survive for those three days, so the lighter the equipment the better. It’ll make things so much easier for them,” Sally said. The hike uses all of the skills the participants will

have acquired over a four year period and is the last task the Scouts must complete before getting their Australian Scout Medallion. Sally said she hopes there will be up to four of the Cooroy group achieving this goal and says it’s a big moment in their lives. “These Scouts will be the first to use the new tents, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the Cooroy Community Bank branch. We now look forward to supporting them the way they’ve supported us. That’s what makes community work,” Sally added. Karl Doss said apart from the daily enjoyment of serving customers in the

branch, this is the best part of his job. It’s our point of difference, and as we generate more profits from our Cooroy Community Bank branch, it means more for organisations just like Cooroy Scout Group. I had a great time meeting with Sally and the group and we look forward to providing more support in the years ahead,” Karl said. If you would like more information about Cooroy Scout Group, or become a volunteer to help assist or lead some of the Scouts on exciting activities, call Sally Clarke for more information on 0415 984 900 or arrange to visit to the Scout Den at 2 Mary River Road, Cooroy.

IF you’re looking forward to retiring in a couple of years, the thought of finally getting your hands on your super after a lifetime of hard work can be exciting. You may want to pay off your mortgage, you may have your eye on a new car, or you may be planning an overseas holiday. At the same time, have you thought about whether your super will last the distance? Many people make the mistake of viewing retirement as one big holiday and treating their super as a windfall. If you spend up big at the start, you could be struggling later on. Relying on the age pension will put basic food on the table, but you may not have much left over to enjoy the lifestyle you deserve. With Australians living longer, your retirement could last 30 years or more. You could find your money running out very quickly. · Rethink debt repayments Taking your super as a lump sum to pay off all your debt as soon as possible may seem a tempting prospect. But for some of you, using up the lump sum to pay off all debt may not necessarily be the best use of your retirement nest egg. You could end up asset rich, but income poor. You’ll also need to think about the tax implications. Some ‘bad’ debt, such as credit cards, personal loans and mortgage loans, is

not tax deductible. Other ‘good’ debt, such as investment loans, is tax deductible. Generally, you’re better off dealing with the bad debt before the good debt. · Think about your investments Turbulent investment markets are always tricky to navigate. But when you’re retired, you don’t have a regular pay cheque to make up lost ground. You’re looking for consistent returns and you don’t want any nasty surprises. Many Australians have turned to term deposits. When interest rates were higher, term deposits may have made sense. They offered decent returns and peace of mind. But with official cash rates down, they could leave you at the mercy of inflation, particularly as a higher proportion of your budget could possibly be going on increasing healthcare and power bills. Term deposits still have their place… but as part of a diversified portfolio that generates enough income to enjoy a comfortable retirement. · Take full advantage of benefits Many self-funded retirees are entitled to Centrelink benefits and healthcare cards. And if you’re still working part time, you should consider taking full advantage of schemes such as the government cocontribution. Consider staying in the workforce

THE Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society was founded 30 years ago this year. The founding members chose an Orchid that grows locally as their floral emblem, Phaius tankervilliae pronounced (fay-us)(tan-ker-vil-eeeye). Phaius tankervilliae is commonly called the Swamp orchid because of its habitat. It grows in

swampy areas on the east coast of Australia from northern parts of New South Wales up to the top of Queensland and into New Guinea. As its habitat suggests it is a Terrestrial orchid and can be easily cultivated in a potting media of commercial Cymbidium Mix and kept moist. I grow mine in large pots as the plant has a very large root system and I place

them in a shallow tray of water. This is maintained all year round. Phaius tankervilliae flowers in the spring on tall stems up to 2 metres. The flowers are sequential so the plant has its beautiful bronze coloured flowers for many weeks. The club is always looking for new members and meet the first Saturday of each month at Tinbeerwah Hall with the meeting starting at 1.30pm. The club is a great way to make new friends and learn about these beautiful Orchids. The club conducts a show in Cooroy in conjunction with Coorooy Fusion to showcase the exotic orchids. The show will be open on the 8th and 9th May. Admission fee of $2 is charged to cover hire costs. There will also be plants for sale at reasonable prices.

The division between work and retirement isn’t clear cut any more. More than two in five Australians who work full time and intend to retire are looking to reduce their hours first.[1] Working part time not only keeps some money coming in – it can also keep you connected to a wider network of people, give you the chance to teach others, enable you to do what you love at a slower pace, and generally help you to stay active. · Aim for the long term You’ll need to develop a long-term strategy that generates income and capital growth to make sure your money lasts for as long as needed. Keen to get a more in-depth view of your options? Call us on 5447 7740 today – we’re ready to help. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 004 are authorised representative and credit representative of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Life Enhancing Chiropractic has a new chiropractor and longer opening hours! WITH the expansion of the team at Life Enhancing Chiropractic we would like to welcome Dr Derek Silva to the team. Dr. Derek was born and raised in Canada. He grew up like most kids in Canada playing Ice Hockey but loved to play Lacrosse. Derek has played at the top level in lacrosse, growing up winning a couple of National Championships along the way, both as a player and a coach. Chiropractic has been a major part of his life since he was a kid and has helped him perform at optimum levels on and off the field by maintaining proper nervous system function. Ever since Derek started to see the Chiropractor at a young age he has noticed the positive effects it has had on him when his body was functioning the way it should. This created a drive for Derek to help other people. He was always volunteering his time with sporting events, food banks and local charities. Derek completed his Bachelor of Science, which focused on Human Kinetics in Canada and then moved to New Zealand to study

at the world-renowned New Zealand College of Chiropractic. Since then, Derek has moved to Australia with his partner to help the people of Cooroy and surrounding areas reach their health goals, perform better in life and to make the area one of the healthiest regions in Australia. Derek has a passion to help active families achieve the highest state of internal fitness and health through the Chiropractic lifestyle so that they can make a positive impact in the community and the world. Derek has been trained in Upper Cervical, manual and low force techniques and is constantly learning new things to help his clients get the most out of their care. COOROY police station has been allocated a person from the latest intake of the Volunteers in Policing program that operates throughout SE Queensland. The program seeks applications from people interested in volunteering their time to assist police with community safety strategies. This year Sergeant Mal Scott is pleased that a local

person applied for a position, thereby enabling Cooroy to acquire a volunteer for this year. Anne Winning (pictured) lives in Cooroy. Anne worked in a senior management position in the Queensland Government until budget cuts saw the end of the program she managed. “I found I didn’t take to retirement as easily as I thought I would,” said Anne. “I missed being involved in the community and being part of a team doing worthwhile work. The chance to volunteer in the local police seemed like it might help to fill those gaps.” Cooroy residents will soon see Anne out and about in the community. One of her first projects will be to update contact information for all the businesses in town. Sergeant Scott says it is very helpful to police to know who has the keys to businesses if an incident occurs after hours. “We don’t get enough time to go around to all the businesses and get contact details, so it will be a great help to have Anne do this work.” Anne will also help with

the Lock it or Lose it campaign. “I found it interesting to learn that the majority of robbery crimes are opportunistic,” said Anne. “If people leave a car unlocked or a window open in a house it just gives thieves the right conditions and they take advantage of that. I will be helping police to spread the message and

hopefully reduce these opportunistic crimes in the local area.” There are other ways that Anne will be helping police engage with the community and enhance community safety. She will be helping to spread the word about how residents themselves can be the eyes and the ears for the police. “For example, I

Cooroy Cruise and Travel

I’D like to congratulate the community in general for taking such a proactive approach to keeping our roads safe by continuing to report bad drivers on our roads and assisting police with prosecuting these drivers so our roads are a safer place for all. Drivers with bad attitudes to road safety sometimes need to be reminded that to drive on our roads is a privilege and not a right and that privilege can be withdrawn at any time. Police are becoming even more efficient in targeting recidivist traffic offenders by using such technology as camera cars which have automatic number plate recognition which can easily identify such offenders. Police are also thinking outside the square by encouraging members of the public to use their phones (when not driving) to electronically record the more serious traffic offences such as dangerous driving and hooning offences so police can then utilise the very strong antihooning and repeat offenders legislation to confiscate cars and withdrawing the privilege of driving on our roads. Several such instances in Cooroy lately have led to drivers being charged with offences as a direct result of witnesses coming forward and reporting hooning and dangerous driving and not just stating that old Chestnut comment of “Where are the police when your need them.” Members of our community are encouraged to become the eyes and ears of the police and to report drivers with bad attitudes to road safety. With the Easter break just around the corner Police will again be on the road targeting the Fatal Five of Life Endangering offences ie Drink Driving, Speeding, Seatbelts, Fatigue, inattention and mobile phones. Also, locals need to be aware that speed zones through the ever changing road works sights on the Bruce Hwy and the Cooroy southern and northern interchanges are being constantly monitored by police with fines being issued for offending drivers. In another pleasing result for Cooroy another Break and Enter offence has been solved when an offender was caught in Brisbane in a stolen

www.cooroyrag.com.au

car and a search of the car revealed property which had been stolen from a house in Cudgerie Estate, Black Mountain. This offence occurred when the occupants were home and watching TV in what police describe as a sneak type offence. An offender, with no real ties to the area has randomly targeted this address walking in from the street and through a rear door before stealing cash and property. Living in such a laid back place like Cooroy it is easy to fall into the trap of leaving doors and windows open and I know that none of us want to live behind locked doors 24 hours a day but maybe a compromise might be to ensure at least security doors and windows are locked especially when that particular entry point can gain access to parts of the house that the occupants are not frequenting at that time. The apprehension and detention of this offender has no doubt stopped other similar offences from occurring so it’s another pat on the back for the police in endeavours of keeping our communities safe. A footnote to this offence occurring is that several witnesses did see a suspicious male in the area at the time but failed to notify neighbours or police which is understandable given the fact that this area is a very low crime area however in future can I encourage all people to report suspicious behaviour to neighbours and the police and take down registration details of vehicles in case it becomes relevant at a later date. In a separate incident a business in the Cooroy Industrial Estate has had several items stolen including a Renegade air compressor, a Hitashi Drop saw, a Boss Chain saw, 3 x Navman GPS units, 1 x Uniden UHF Hand Held Radio and a Makita Mitre saw with a 2 metre slide. Anyone with information on the persons responsible for this thief or has had any of these items offered to them for sale please contact the Cooroy police on 54425030 or CrimeStoppers on 1800333000 if you wish to remain anonymous. Cooroy Police are pleased to announce that we have a new member of our community who has volunteered to assist local police with duties

that we would not otherwise have time to attend to. Members of the business community will be meeting Anne soon when she attends all of our 170+ businesses in Cooroy to personally introduce herself and to also update our afterhours contacts and key holders register which needs updating. Police often attend premises in the early hours of the morning which have been broken into or otherwise require a police response and it is always best practise to have an up to date Name and Address and phone number so we can contact the business owner to advise them of the issue at hand. Please welcome Anne as another point of contact between the Cooroy Police and the community and feel free to discuss any suggestions or initiatives that you feel may enhance our wonderful community.

Noosa Touch regional championships NOOSA Touch had an extremely successful Junior Regional Championships last Saturday. The championships, held at Caboolture, were hotly contested both in weather conditions and touch action with affiliates competing from as far away as Kingaroy to the north and Caboolture to the South. Our association had 7 representative teams in both girls and boys divisions competing in Under 10, 12, 14 and 16’s. The mighty Sea Eagles secured grand final berths in five of the divisions with the U12 girls claiming the title of regional champions. All of our junior players played their hearts out in the sizzling conditions and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. The Under 10 girls tasted success in 3 of their 4 games which earned them a spot in the grand final against Caboolture where they went down in a close encounter by one touchdown.

Bronte follows in her parents’ footsteps Bronte Raymont, daughter of Darren and Kylie Raymont of Belli steps out in her first hack class in Pomona. There’s no stopping her now!

Under 10 boys pushed their opposition to the final siren and only a couple of touchdowns the difference in their first two games. Saving the best till last they finished the day off with a big win against Caboolture. The mighty champions the Under 12 girls faced Caboolture in the final and with the scores locked at 3 all at full time the game went into a drop off. The Noosa girls had to hold fast and defend for the first set of six but were triumphant with just the second touch of the ball scoring the winning touchdown in a length of the field display. Under 12 boys - This team is very young and to finish the day as runners up was a great achievement. Under 14 girls were undefeated through all of the round games and consistently performed planned plays and had a number of touchdowns resulting from a combined team effort. They continued their winning way through the quarter and semi finals to earn their place in the grand final. The final result may not have gone their way but the day was a huge success for them. By the time the State Cup rolls around in July these girls will be unstoppable. The Under 14 boys finished the day as worthy runners up. Under 16 girls got off to a good start with a draw and then a win to get their campaign on the road. Kawana ended their run and were too strong at the semi final stage.

Champions: U12 girls

NDSHS Rugby League NOOSA District State High School entered four teams into last Friday’s Rugby League Gala Day in Cooroy, with the school having the most teams competing out of all the schools represented. The two Year 8 teams, a Year 10 team and the open team had some great success, with the Year 10’s taking home the silverware knocking off Mountain Creek State high School in the final. Noosa District State High School teachers Martin Stieger, Dean McMaster and Ron Greentree were integral in the planning, organising and training of the players leading up to the day, and made the NDSHS teams’ involvement possible.

Ladies - the Noosa Pirates want you! HAVE a guess at what you think one of the fastest growing sports in Australia would be? Well, it’s Rugby League! So young ladies of Noosa, are you feeling bored? Do you need some more exercise in your life? Are you craving that next adrenalin rush? The Noosa Pirates are currently looking for girls from 13-18 years old. That means Under 14’s (2001-2002 born); Under 16’s (2000-1999 born) and Under 18’s (1998-1997 born) to join a wonderful family orientated club. The girls train every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 6:00pm, with games played on Friday evenings. The season kicked off last week, but goes for ten weeks, so don’t worry about missing the first games. Players of all levels of ability are very welcome to join and are all catered for with very patient and understanding coaches. Team sports are also a great way to meet new people and create lasting friendships. Last week, the manager of the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and Noosa Pirates’ sponsor, Geoff Edwards visited the girls at training. Coaches Paul Dwyer and Tony McIlroy were keen to show Geoff the commitment and developing skill of the girls. “The girls’ energy was fantastic,” Geoff said. “It just reinforces to all of us the importance of sport with the young people in our community. The growth trajectory of Women

in League is amazing and I’m delighted we’re able to support the Noosa Pirates, Paul, Tony, all the girls and their passion for what they’re all doing here. They’re obviously having fun and that’s what it’s all about,” Geoff said. The girls play with modified rules and nine players per side. The cost is $150 and the girls get two training sessions a week, 10 games of Rugby League plus a Pirates shirt, shorts and socks, so it’s great value for money and if you qualify for the government Get Started Vouchers, registration could be free. For information contact the Noosa Pirates on 0408 473 892, or you can register online at www.ndjrl.com.au.

Players will receive two solar powered LED golf balls and will play in teams of four when they come play night golf in support of All Abilities Golf, a local non-profit group that encourages people with disabilities and young people to get out and active on a golf course. IT’S time. After months of preparation, Pomona’s very own Bendigo Bank Agency is set to open this Friday, 27 March. Located at 3 Station Street, the agency will initially service Pomona and the Noosa hinterland three days a week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am 3.00pm. Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited, Rick Cooper said the agency will provide residents, traders and community groups with an alternative, locally-owned banking option. “The Cooroy community has already seen the benefits a local banking service can bring, both in terms of easy access to banking, and the reinvestment of profits back into the local community,” Mr. Cooper said. The agency will offer transaction and lending services, be able to process home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. There will also be opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments. In the next few weeks, an ATM will also be installed as an added convenience to locals. “We’re delighted to be able to deliver what the Pomona community asked for last year, and all indications are this agency will grow from strength to strength. I think it’s going to be a great addition to Pomona’s business community and have significant positive long term impact on the town,” Mr. Cooper added. “I’m sure the local word of mouth will mean we’ll have lots of enquiries in the coming weeks. We know there’s great

Rick Cooper (left) is joined by Pam Hoens and Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank and the rest of the community committee after the announcement at the SCCFSL AGM excitement about Pomona having a real say in its own future, and the new agency will be a chance to exercise that. Pam Hoens and the team are excited and ready to assist with locals with their banking needs,” he said. Locals have made it clear for many months they wanted a bank of their own. To that end, the opening of the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank has been months in the planning. “As we’ve shared with the community in the past few months, our message is simple - the more support the Pomona agency receives, the more support we can give the community. Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money can go back into the community. As one of the new agency’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Mr. Cooper concluded. Agencies represent about 20 percent of Bendigo Bank’s retail outlets and the new Pomona agency Branch

“Changing face of Mary” documentary launch AGRICULTURE is a very important industry to the Mary River catchment and yet it is under threat as a result of local and global pressures. Interested community members are invited to debate and discuss ways that these pressures can be addressed at the launch of a new documentary film, called “The Changing Face of Mary”, to be screened at the Dagun Choo Choo Bar on Saturday 28th March at 6:30pm. The film was produced by the University of Sunshine Coast, with funding from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and features local Mary Valley food producers discussing changes to agriculture and their concerns about the future. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion including Elaine Bradley, Dagun resident and recent finalist in the Queensland Rural Women’s Award and prominent rural sociologist Emeritus Professor Geoff Lawrence from the University of Queensland. “Did you know that since the 1970’s

Australia has lost about 30% of our farms?” explained film Director Dr Lila Singh-Peterson from the University of Sunshine Coast. “Other national governments are restricting imports to ensure their nation’s food security, and protecting their community’s cultural heritage and aesthetic values. This film and the panel discussion are designed to provoke consideration of these issues and to identify ways in which governments at all levels can help ensure the future viability of agriculture. ” The film focuses on the Mary Valley – a diverse and important food producing area that has sustained a rich and unique cultural landscape. The Mary Valley is an excellent case study of both the challenges faced by agriculture and the strategies that can be put in place to address these challenges. Free popcorn will be available to all guests and the Choo Choo Bar will have wine and food available for purchase. The Choo Choo Bar is located in the historical Dagun Railway station.

pomona Last of the Summer’s Wine exhibit

COOROY RAG

“LAST Of The Summer’s Wine” is the current exhibition at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery which opens on 21 March and will run to 23 April. This is an exhibition of woodworking, painting, photography and drawing by four elderly “gentlemen” who meet once a week for coffee and discuss various topics in a positive and humorous way. We have not solved the problems of the world but have found mate-ship discovering an interest in art along the way. Peter Farcas (wood worker) and his friends, Wayne Guse (photography), Rolf Hohlt, (wood sculptor), and Jacques van Geel (drawings) have decided to come together to present an eclectic selection of fine art, interesting sculptures ... masterful wood working and nostalgic drawings. Many of the proceeds from this exhibition will be given to a charity of the artists’ choice. Peter Farcas is well known for his masterful work of wooden bowls, some translucent. He is a regular at the Eumundi Markets and his work is in many parts of Australia as well as overseas. Wayne Guse has had a passion for photography all his life. His images in this exhibition will reflect his wanderings with his wife Tracie as they go on mystery field trips with cameras in hand. Wayne is donating any profits of sales to the Cancer Foundation. Jacques van Gell is presenting a collection of sketches and images themed “Human Form”. Jaques will be donating his proceeds to research towards a cure for dementia. Rolf has a passion for working with wood respecting natures’s way of twisting timber into amazing shapes. He allows each piece to be as untouched as possible only highlighting its natural colours and texture to expose it tangible beauty. Each artist is donating one of his works for a raffle to benefit the Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Tickets will be available at the Gallery throughout the exhibition. 10 Station Street, Pomona 5485 2950 www.pomonartgallery.com. Closed Sundays

dining & entertainment Anzac Equestrian History showing at Cooroy RSL

COOROY RAG LOCAL Member for Nicklin (incl Cooroy) and Qld Parliament Speaker nominee Mr Peter Wellington will officially open the launch and first showing of ‘The Greater Sunshine Coast ANZAC Equestrian History Project’ DVD will be held at Cooroy RSL Club on Wednesday 22nd April at 5.30pm. The DVD highlights some of the modern day links with the history of the original ANZAC Light Horseman from the Sunshine Coast region. The Noosa Institute for Socio-Economic & Environmental Research (NISER) conducted filming throughout the region with re-enactment troops and individual interviews as well as filming at local events such as the unveiling of the life size bronze light horseman and horse statue at Hervey Bay, the Toogoolawah Beersheba Day anniversary celebrations and the 100 horse enlistment ride in Brisbane in September 2014. The DVD centers on recounting and recording the local Sunshine Coast ANZAC Equestrian History based on those

who served in WW1. It outlines the strong contribution of manpower and horses made by the Light Horsemen who enlisted from the Greater Sunshine Coast region. The launch of the DVD in the lead up the Anzac day forms part of the Centenary of ANZAC Celebrations supported by the Queensland and Federal Governments. They provided funds ($29,500) along with sponsorship from

organisations such as the Bartercard Foundation ($10,000 Trade Dollars) so that the team led by local film maker James Muller could tell the story and recount memories of people who had links to the Anzac Equestrian History. For further information and to book in, please contact the Club on 5447 6131. All in the community who have an interest in the ANZAC Equestrian History are welcome.

TO commemorated the ANZAC Centenary, Cooroy RSL will be hosting a number of excellent events in the week leading up to and including ANZAC Day. Key events include the launch of this DVD documenting the contribution of local horses and men in the First World War, a performance from our favourite New Zealand Defence Force Band and the Troop Train Reenactment featuring our Acting Prime Minister on the day Warren Truss. The actual Troop Train will be stopping right here in Cooroy and commemorations will take place at the stone of remembrance in front of the RSL. Chorale honours the sacrifice of Gallipoli THE Anzac Centenary commemoration on April 25 of the Gallipoli Landing has given Noosa Chorale the chance to bring back a remarkably thrilling and emotional work, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man—a Mass for Peace. According to Chorale music director, Adrian King, this is no ordinary piece of music. “It is already the most performed work by any living composer with well over 1000 performances in the last 15 years. It is an emotional journey, exploring the descent into war, its hellish horror and, finally, the desire for peace.” Adrian said that when the choir performed it in 2012 in the Bicentennial Hall the impact of the music and the accompanying film with its graphic images of battle and resultant ravages produced a standing ovation. “Comments made to Chorale members after the performance made clear that those in the audience had experienced something rich, powerful and stimulating. “Aware that the Gallipoli commemoration would be an emotional time for many people in our region, it seemed to me The Armed Man would at one time capture for them the hell that was Gallipoli, the sacrifice of our brave young soldiers and the joy the world felt in 1918 when the war was over. “The Armed Man reflects on war and peace in a multi-cultural global society. Regardless of culture, race, or religion, Jenkins incorporates Christian, Muslim and Hindu religious texts along with phrases from English and Japanese poets, to create a music which transcends our differences and reminds us of the universality of the wish for peace, in the face of the darker forces that embroil us in wars.” Adrian said the Chorale would again show war footage to accompany the performance. The film was produced for a performance in St David’s Hall in Cardiff and, as Karl Jenkins himself says it has now become an essential backdrop as it adds an extra dimension to the music. “Having decided that this stirring and evocative work by Jenkins would be our first half, I now needed a second half to balance the emotional depth and sheer musical power of the Jenkins’

RENTALS

Servicing the Sunshine Coast & Hinterland I have started my own business to be able to give my owners the Superior Service they deserve. I will achieve this by keeping my business as a small oper-ation. My aim is to give a consistently high service and know my owners and tenants at a more personal level. I have been in property management for about 9 years and have completed all stages of this profession. I am offering my services to owners who want to make their property a lucra-tive investment. My experience has taught me that well-presented homes attract good quality tenants who will maintain your investment home with a high level of care. My aim is to find the right tenants for the right properties, so that owners can enjoy the benefits without the worries. If you have your house for sale and the market is not up to your expectations please consider the rental market. Turn your home into a investment property.

health What’s on offer at E Fitness

COOROY RAG

E Fitness is proud to offer one on one (or small group) Personal Training sessions at an affordable cost, in the comfort of the spacious, relaxed and funky fitness studio in the very heart of Cooroy. Along with Personal Training, Erin Yarwood also offers tailor-made fitness classes to suit all levels, ages and abilities. She is however not your typical ‘aerobics instructor’, her classes are more Personal Training based, which really gives you more bang for your buck! From Pilates to kickboxing and everything in between, Erin has a class for you! There is no need to feel uncomfortable to start joining in on classes at E Fitness; the vibe there is fun and cruisy. “I have such a lovely following at my studio, it really makes me happy. And it’s so nice to see newbies coming to my classes and being embraced by my regulars.” Erin says of her classes. Along with E Fitness’ vast class timetable, unique and fun sessions are often scheduled to keep things interesting. These include 12 week body challenges, kids kickboxing courses, Gonging, Pilates and Tea Rituals (amazing!) and most recently taking place was her 80’s aerobics themed “train the trainer” fundraiser. Leading up to winter, Erin stresses, “Please don’t

let the cooler weather begin to turn you off exercising. This is the perfect time to amp it up a little! Just think, the more you move during winter, the fitter you will be when summer hits and the more ready for the beach your body will be!!” Erin is very excited to announce that the lovely Alix from Om On Yogini has now started taking Vinyasa Flow yoga classes each Thursday at 5.15pm in the studio, which have been amazing. Alix completed her teacher training in Seville, Spain in 2012 with Vidya Jacqueline Heisel. Alix’s classes focus on pranayama techniques and she customizes her classes to create fun flows suitable for beginners to advanced. Another perfect addition to E Fitness is Cooroy Thai Massage, where the wonderful Pam works her magic. Catering for all individuals, Pam is sure to hit the spot. If you are wanting to find a relaxing, motivating, welcoming venue where you can sweat it out, stretch it out, get your muscles rubbed out and totally bliss out and focus on you, then head on up to E Fitness in the Wattle Street Complex in Cooroy. You will be so pleased you did. ‘Like’ us on facebook: E Fitness, Om On Yogini, Cooroy Thai Massage to stay up to date with our goings on.

Try and oxygenating facial LAKERIDGE Health and Beauty would like to introduce our newest facial. The Oxygenating Facial. The use of oxygen in the field of skin care has made major advancements through the years. Oxygen is topically used to heal burns in a hospital setting via hyperbaric chambers, promoting healing within a sterile setting. Based on this premise the Oxygenating facial was created using natural, stable oxygen to increase skin cell metabolism. A 75 minute facial focused around a professional grade treatment that delivers a boost of oxygen directly into the skin while also Targeting acne; Lightening pigmentation; Healing and soothing skin post surgery, laser or peel; Sanitizing the skin, and allowing for easy removal of debris within the pores After the initial cleanse the facial is then tailored to each individual skin type. Supporting products such as Deep Thermal Mask, Marine Mask and Superfruit Enzymes are chosen to best prepare

or follow the Oxygenating treatment dependant on the skins needs. The Oxygenating Facials’ active ingredients foam and warm the skin during application and massage. Increasing circulation, brightening and clearing the skin, promoting healing through cellular turnover, stimulating collagen production, plus the calming ingredients work to reduce redness, soothe inflammation, soften, protect and moisturize. This treatment is recommended fortnightly to provide the full benefits. In conjunction with our recommended home products your skin will be at its very best following the Oxygenating Facial treatment. Just to remind you of our recent offer we have available whereby if you book a series of 6 facials designed to suit your specific needs, we will include a free serum or moisturiser to suit. Our Therapists have years of training and knowledge. Call Lakeridge Health and Beauty Skin Clinic for your appointments on 5442 6239 or call into 3 Ruby Street, behind Billinghurst Accountants.

Preventing falls with Tai Chi LOCAL physiotherapist, Courtney Vella from Hinteractive Physio, has recently undertaken Tai Chi training specifically designed to prevent falls. Falls are the most common cause of injury for the elderly, with around 25-35% of people aged 65 and over falling each year. Falls increase with age as well as declining strength, flexibility and reflexes. Falls are however preventable. There is overwhelmingly compelling evidence on the benefits of Tai Chi for preventing falls. Many studies have consistently demonstrated that Tai Chi is effective in reducing the risk of falls and preventing falls. The “Tai Chi for Health and Falls

Prevention Program” is an evidence-based, safe and targeted Tai Chi intervention program to effectively: Increase the strength of lower limb muscles; Improve mobility, range of motion and postural stability; Improve dynamic balance and postural control; Maintain bone mass and reduce the risk of bone fracture; Improve toe clearance, awareness and gait; Increase mental alertness and reduce reaction time; Boost confidence and overcome anxiety and the fear of falling. Classes are being held on a Friday morning at 10am. The cost is $10 per session and bookings can be made by contacting Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

sport Debut tournament for young guns

COOROY RAG IMPACT Boxings latest young guns Coen Allman & Kayden Merceica entered the ring for the first time last weekend. The boys travelled to Bundaberg to compete in their first tournament and both boys made crowd pleasing debuts. First up was 12 yr old Coen. Coen’s opponent from Brisbane had a little more experience than the Impact Boxing young gun, but when the bell rang none of that mattered. Coen took control of the centre ring from the get go and working of a good left jab he kept his combinations flowing to win every round. Coen was awarded the win via a unanimous decision. Next up was Kayden “Kaos” Merceica. Kayden had a little trouble with his taller opponent in round one and returned to the corner a little frustrated that his opponent was keeping him on the outside. Round two

Left Coen Allman - right Kayden Merceica saw Kayden work his way in under his opponent’s guard and attack the body with some brilliant combinations. With the boys winning a round each the bout was to be decided in the third and final round. There was nothing in this round as both boys had their

moments. When the final bell rang Kayden’s opponent was awarded the win via a split points decision. “These little men put on a great display of boxing skills tonight. They fought with heart and soul and they were both definitely crowd favourites. I

am so proud of them both tonight, it’s a big thing to climb through those ropes and these two champions took all that in their stride. I was more nervous than they were before their bouts. Both boys are looking forward to their next tournament,” Coach Mark Evans said.
