Community spirit, it’s our time to shine!

Lynn Watson, who has a compromised immune system, is assisted by IGA employee, Lachlan, who is following social distancing guidelines With the Coronavirus pandemic already impacting us at a local level it’s now the time, more than ever, that our community needs to pull together. We must remember that although this virus may be mild for many of us, the precautions we have been asked to take and the measures our Government is putting in place, are to protect the most vulnerable in our community - our elderly, those with immune deficiencies and our disabled. This is not ‘the end of the world’ albeit for a time perhaps it will be different to the one that we know. Although it has been predicted

that 80 per cent of us will get COVID-19, most of us will recover. We need to heed the advice from our Government and stop panic buying. We have been reassured that the chain of supply for goods is still there. The only reason our supermarket shelves are empty is because people are hoarding. It’s understandable that we are all afraid. But shopping to excess is not going to stop the virus. It won’t protect us and it’s very sad to see reports of elderly people who are running out of essential goods. We must also acknowledge the outstanding jobs our retail workers are doing in the midst of panic and bad manners. It is OUR fault

there is no toilet paper on the shelves, not theirs. Along with our health workers, they too are on the front line. They are working long hours in the midst of mayhem and we need to be appreciative of that. It’s time to stop and it’s time to ask ourselves what we can do within our community to ensure this virus doesn’t ravage our identity - that of a strong, caring, supportive and vital community. We need to start making sure our friends and neighbours are okay. Our community can, and I’m sure will, set an example of what REAL community means.

Council responds to coronavirus update Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington, said he was saddened to learn of the recent death a local Noosa Shire woman from coronavirus. “Our deepest sympathies are with her family following their loss. It appears at this stage she may have contracted the virus from someone who was visiting from overseas. The woman subsequently travelled to Sydney where she died in a hospital. “That is all the information we have currently. However, Queensland Health assures us it has a team tracing those who may have come into recent contact with the woman. “Although this appears to be the first death of a Queenslander from coronavirus, it is important that residents do not panic. Queensland Health, who is the lead agency in this pandemic, advise people to keep going about their ordinary business at this stage.” Cr Wellington said Noosa Council was taking extra precautionary measures to reduce the COVID-19 risk to residents and visitors at Council-owned facilities. “We are increasing cleaning measures at all of our public Council buildings including public toilets. “Meanwhile, Council has a COVID-19 Management Plan in place. This includes business continuity planning to ensure that essential services are maintained by Council as this pandemic unfolds. “This means that we have made sure that key

contractors such as our garbage collection contractor and cleaning contractors can continue to provide services. “We are also fortunate that we keep all of our ICT services in the cloud so we can provide support to our community even if our staff need to work from home in the coming weeks. We are well prepared. “At this stage, all of our community facilities such as libraries, Noosa Aquatic Centre, Noosa Leisure Centre and The J remain open in accordance with the latest advice from Queensland Health. If that changes, we will let everyone know. “We are also putting in place information and support to help local community and business groups. “There is a lot of information coming out from the Commonwealth and State government and we are able to help our local community and business groups navigate through that information. “We are also working closely with other agencies such as Vinnies, Red Cross and the Salvos to provide direct support and information to those in our community who may need help. “It’s important that our residents remain calm, informed and that they continue to support each other,” the Mayor said. “We saw the best of our community during the recent bushfire disasters, and I’m sure we will again see wonderful community spirit during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Scam Alert Scammers are taking advantage of fears surrounding the Coronavirus. Don’t click on links from sources you don’t know. They could download viruses onto your computer or device. Watch for emails claiming to be from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or experts saying they have information about the virus. For the most up-to-date information about the Coronavirus, visit the CDC and the WHO websites. Ignore online offers for vaccinations. There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure Coronavirus - online or in stores. Whether through charities or crowdfunding sites, don’t let anyone rush you into making a donation. If someone wants donations in cash, by gift card, or by wiring money, don’t do it.

Council elections to go ahead The local government elections which are independently managed by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) will proceed as planned on March 28. It is mandatory to vote. While pencils will be available at polling booths, the ECQ is now recommending that voters bring their own pen or pencil. Also they have asked candidates to make an unprecedented but voluntary concession to limit the number of campaign workers. Early voting is available until March 27 at Cooroy Uniting Church Hall, 51 Maple Street and Bushlands Shopping Centre on from 9am to 9pm and from 9am to 6pm on March 27. According to wellknown local artist, Jandamarra Cadd, change doesn’t necessarily come from the external. Often, it is what happens internally that is even more important. ‘You can choose to be a victim to circumstance,’ he says. ‘Or you can say “I take responsibility for my life!” Sometimes it feels like we don’t have a choice, but we do – even if the choice is how we react to something.’ As much as possible, Jandamarra tries to ‘take the silver linings’ from everything that has happened in his life. That hasn’t always been an easy thing to do, especially during his youth. ‘I grew up with a lot of violence and abuse,’ he says. ‘I had a lot of anger, a lot of internal frustration.’ Having a Scottish/Swedish father and an Aboriginal mother led to a lot of bul-

lying at school, which in those days, was swept underneath the carpet. He ended up on the streets, drifting into crime which led to his incarceration in several juvenile institutions. After breaking out of one maximum security facility he was recaptured and thrown into solitary confinement for weeks with half-rations and regular beatings. He remembers literally standing naked and smashing his head against a wall. ‘I just wanted someone to acknowledge that I was alive – that I was a human being,’ he says. By the time he came out he had stopped speaking altogether. It was at this low point in his life that a councillor put a paintbrush in his hand. Although it was by no means an instantaneous thing, the paintbrush offered him ‘a

way out of his head’. It is something he will always be grateful for, believing that without this intervention he would have ended up either dead or in jail for the rest of his life. From that point on, Jandamarra says, ‘the anger slowly drifted away and I was never in trouble again.’ For a while he had an office job in Melbourne, but it didn’t feel right and he remembers eating a lot junk food and putting on weight. Then he took a trip up this way (a place he remembered from his childhood, fishing with his dad). A week later, he returned to Melbourne, quit his job, and moved up here permanently. Despite his mum and dad announcing that he had just ‘thrown away his life’, he made the decision to follow what was in his heart and devote himself to his art. He was

21 years old. It was a hard slog. In fact, for the first 10 or 15 years it was all closed doors. He knew he had to get really good at his craft if he wanted people to pay attention. He also realised that the creative side of his art was only a part of it. Making the work sustainable was also important and this he believes eventually happened by ‘establishing authentic connections’. Today, as a past finalist in the Archibald Prize, a winner of several People’s Choice awards, the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate, etc., etc., there are many doors that have opened. He likes to put himself in places that are about bringing people together in a progressive environment. This includes visiting schools and sharing a bit about First Nation’s culture –

helping Australians of all colours and ethnicities realise that we are all custodians of this land (‘that sunset doesn’t belong to anyone’), to see the enormous value in all the rich knowledge that stretches back thousands of years, and to encourage people to become more connected again – to Mother Nature, to our communities, and to ourselves. ‘We work, work, work but there is so much disconnection and emotional starvation. People are craving to connect. We need to feel again.’ Over many years, Jandamarra has learnt to see the silver lining in everything. Even the dark times, like being locked up as a child, has taught him empathy for people like refugees, First Nation’s people, women, and the LGBTQ community. He knows what it feels like to be on the periphery and he is determined not to judge other peoples’ lives (‘we don’t know what they’ve been through’). ‘What has happened to me doesn’t define who I am’, he says. ‘I could be angry at the world, lose myself in drink and drugs, but what would that serve?’ For Jandamarra, it’s all about gratitude. ‘I am doing what I love fulltime, I have two beautiful daughters, a rich community and an engagement with that community. It’s a dream. Even when things feel heavy, there is something to be grateful for. Today, I can breathe, and the air is clean.’ A Cooroy Termite & Pest Control community initiative

COOROY RAG Letter to the Editor I would like to comment on the disgraceful entrance to our town. On a site that is in need of a lot of care and attention, there are signs to say that these candidates support the Cooroy and hinterland. What a disgraceful joke. The whole place is a blot on our landscape. The owner of the lot complains that the entrance to Cooroy needs improving yet he has done nothing to improve his land which is, and looks like, a junkyard. The sitting members of council, Wellington and Stockwell, pushed very hard to have signage reduced in Noosa but have they practised what they preached?

They have a number of signs hung on the fence and in the yard. What has happened to the two only signs per property? I was told by the owner that he is not going ahead with the shops but will put in an application for another motel. Does he need council support? What about the motel beside the bowls club many years ago he got passed through council but did not go ahead with? Will he go ahead with this one or are we going to have an eyesore for many years to come? The Wellington, Stockwell way is do what I say not what I do. Ray Kelly, 1 Pine Tree Drive, Lake McDonald

Cooroy Camphor Laurel’s continued success Cooroy Camphor Laurel (CCL)continues to be one of the best kept success secrets in the Noosa hinterland. Despite having a myriad of repeat customers, not a week goes by without a local dropping in and declaring “I never knew you existed”! Making all manner of timber products from camphor laurel for the past 14 years, and staffed entirely by local volunteers (both male and female), this registered not-for-profit group, located in the big colorbond shed in Lower Mill Road, Cooroy, has the support of Noosa Council in their woodworking endeavours. All products are made from this declared weed in the Shire, which continues to proliferate along creeks and hillsides in the Noosa hinterland.

All timber and product sale proceeds are retained by the group and spent wherever possible in local community businesses on services and products to keep the group functioning, and they are very proud of the fact, and consistent with Queensland not-for-profit model rules, that no member receives any paid benefit from the process! The group greatly appreciates local landholders’ offering their camphor laurel trees for collection and milling, so please contact them if you too have some larger tree bases and trunks to donate. The preference is for any logs or trees greater than 350mm in diameter, so they can be cut safely on the bandsaw mill.

CCL has a consistently growing customer base and despite choosing not to advertise on social media or via their own website, the group continues to be inundated with bespoke timber product orders for sturdy tables, benchtops, lazy susan’s, boxes, kitchen products, etc! In addition to specific customer orders, a variety of stock timber products and slabs are sold at the group’s shed, in the Cooroy library and also at a number of annual markets in SE Qld that the group chooses to attend. Every year CCL donates many items for subsequent raffling, auction or resale by a number of other not for profit groups in the Shire. They are also keen to collaborate and work with other local businesses wherever possible. One successful ongoing example is two local Cooroy businesses, namely The Shed Company and Wimmers, each leaders in their field, have combined with CCL to provide The Shed Company customers with a novel gift. Each customer who purchases a shed from Nigel and the team, is presented with a momento of the transaction, being a handcrafted box made from camphor laurel with rope handles, and filled with a dozen bottles of the very popular Wimmer’s soft drink range. Each box has a burnt in brand from both The Shed Company and CCL, and feedback from customers has been universally positive. This initiative proves the success of partnership and the increasing importance of buying and shopping locally. At this point in time, CCL are now actively seeking additional new members to join the team of volunteers. Maybe you have recently arrived in the Cooroy area and have some time available each month to put your hand toward milling or woodworking with this wonderful product? You might also have painting/timber finishing skills, administration, marketing , IT, OH & S, machinery maintenance knowledge etc, all of which they would welcome. They have existing members from all walks of life, professional and trade, both male and female, and particularly welcome retirees who

are looking to fill a void in their weekday mornings with motivating activities, in the company of like-minded locals! It only costs a one-off $50 to join with no annual fee, and you may just surprise yourself with hidden woodworking talents that you unleash! The shed is open every weekday morning between 0730 and 12 noon for you to have a chat, and see the volunteers in action. You and/or your partner can also browse the recently expanded retail shop on site to pick up a camphor laurel bargain or souvenir. Parking is always available at the shed door too. The President, Stuart Campbell, foreman Bruce Cabot, and other members can be contacted on the shed number 0435 481 108, or email scclti@outlook.com Please do not sit at home and wonder what you are going to do today. Make the effort to contact the group have some fun while learning new skills! Cooroy Camphor Laurel is supported by Noosa Council.

Probus members awaiting the bus to Redcliffe

Members of the Probus Club of Cooroy recently had a very interesting trip to Redcliffe. Morning tea was at a venue of your choice followed primarily by a trip down memory lane with the Bee Gees in the Bee Gee Way. It follows the family’s movement to Australia and where these young boys through sheer talent and perseverance made it big time in the music world. This wonderful audio and visual tribute transcends how the world fell in love with

their unusual sound. From entertaining at the Redcliffe speedway as teenagers to world renown entertainers; we hope they keep “Stayin’ Alive”. Although the weather was hot, members enjoyed a stroll out on the historic Redcliffe jetty, followed by the mandatory visit to the shops then lunch at the RSL. The bus driver then gave us a scenic tour along Moreton Bay to the Houghton Highway (which was the Hornibrook Bridge) as we headed home.

Tourism Noosa will have access to its $350,000 emergency marketing fund to respond to the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic. Council granted the tourism body access to the contingency fund so it can begin work on future marketing programs for the shire. Mayor Tony Wellington moved the motion as a Mayoral Minute at last week’s Ordinary Meeting. “This will be an important facet of Noosa’s recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19,” the Mayor said. It’s the first time Tourism Noosa has requested access to the fund, which Council requires it to keep in order to respond to a global financial crisis, natural disasters, pilot strikes and other major events that impact tourism. “Tourism Noosa can only access this Contingency Reserve with the approval of Council. The current pandemic is certainly an appropriate circumstance for Tourism Noosa to access these reserves,” the Mayor said. Council also granted CEO Brett de Chastel

special decision-making powers to ensure the organisation can keep responding to the pandemic during the pre-election caretaker period. “It’s vital that our Council remains flexible and able to respond swiftly to the rapidly evolving pandemic. In particular we need to assist our residents, businesses and local economy through these difficult times. “This community demonstrated fantastic mutual support and enormous compassion during the recent bushfire disasters. This new challenge will no doubt also bring out the best in our community. It is very important that we look after one another, with particular focus on the most vulnerable in our midst.” Residents will go the polls on March 28. Council’s March 19 meeting was the last of the current term of office. Mayor Wellington said the first meeting of the new Council was likely to be shortly after Easter, depending upon when the Returning Officer declared the poll results.

‘features’ that add to the aesthetics of the area. The work includes planting of grasses, reeds, sedges and understory plants such as common flax lilly, matt rush, river lilly, richmond birdwing butterfly vine, midyim berry, native rosemary, prinkly-leaveved paperbark, thyme honey myrtle, grevillea, along the waterway and surrounds. These are highly effective in filtering and absorbing sediments and surface runoff and attracting and supporting wildlife. The club has installed a variety of nest boxes in the area to attract wildlife and established native bee colonies that benefit

native flora. Tadpole traps placed in ponds and creeks are aimed at reducing the impact of cane toads on native wildlife. Earlier this month Llew O’Brien visited Cooroy Golf Club to see work well advanced in completing stage 1 of the project. The club is seeking funding for stage 2 which will focus on the creek bed and improving and managing water flows. Cooroy Golf Club is committed to achieving positive long term environmental outcomes and playing a part in a stronger, inclusive community.

Mr O’Brien announced Cooroy Golf Club has received $6,934 through the Communities Environment Program to improve a watercourse. “The Cooroy Golf Club grounds contain water courses that are a catchment for Lake McDonald, and have been home to a group of platypuses in the past, so it’s an important area to preserve and protect,” Mr O’Brien said.

An important part of the Cooroy Golf Club Mission is that; ‘We contribute to the sustainability and uniquity beauty of the Noosa Hinterland through responsible management of our environmental footprint.” Last year the club undertook a project with Noosa And District Landcare to mitigate creek bank erosion through a planting initiative. Further initiatives are underway with Noosa and District Landcare to enhance creek banks and surrounding habitat and add to the experience of playing the course.

With the assistance of Llew O’Brien MP, the club recently received a grant under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program and the Communities Environment Program initiatives supporting local projects. Cooroy Golf Club is using the grant to undertake rehabilitation and environmental work on the stretch of creek adjacent to the 4th fairway. The aim is to (1) improve the health of the waterway and surrounds (2) create a desirable aquatic and terrestrial habitat for native wildlife to enjoy and thrive ( 3) create unique

Cooroy Gymnastics Club also received $17,788 to re-roof its gymnasium. “The Cooroy Gymnastics Club helps keep more than 500 children active every week, and provides a valuable opportunity to learn new skills in a fun environment,” Mr O’Brien said. “This funding has helped replace their old roof, which was rusted through and posed a safety risk – so now Cooroy kids and their families can continue to enjoy their sport and compete in safety.”

Step Up to Clean Up Step Up to Clean Up was the call and around 350 volunteers signed up on Sunday March 1st across the Noosa region to pick up over 6.5 tonnes of other people’s rubbish as part of Clean Up Australia Day, organised once again by the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA). There were 22 sites were where volunteers searched the lengths and breadths of Noosa’s bushland, parklands, roadsides, creeks and river to Clean Up Noosa. The Noosa Hinterland was once again fully behind Clean Up Australia Day with sites in Kin Kin, Cooroy, Cooran, Federal, Pomona and Boreen Point well supported by volunteers keen to Clean Up around their towns. The Sunshine Coast 4WD Club were largely responsible for the large volume of rubbish cleaning up illegal dumping sites in Yurol Forest near Pomona again this year. Tyres were the most significant item collected with around 60 tyres removed from our bushland, but pleasing to see a significant reduction in whitegoods, eWaste and mattresses being dumped this year that can all be recycled.

Three new exhibitions will open at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre on Friday 27th March. There is video art, 2D works in oil and charcoal and 3D works that range from landscape sculptures to large ceramic vessels. “Our next exhibition is as diverse in its context as it is in the materials used”, says Coordinator Alicia Sharples “ the mediums used in each exhibition may all be in contrast but there is one theme present, the continuing need for people to tell their stories through an arts practice. Lew Brennnan’s hyper- realism brings the audience’s attention to singular moments in time, creating emotive responses. Lew says, “Despite transgressing in its purpose from ritual to social commentary, realism as an art form is singularly capable of returning our attention to those simple pleasures in our daily life from where we were otherwise busy making other plans.” Sculptor Greg Kinman and potters Paula Bowie and Melissa McCullagh explore the dynamic rhythms of nature and time where stories are shared by these artists in a bold use of clay, bamboo, wire and natural materials from the coastal dunes. Physical Video ON Tour at The Butter Factory will be the last leg on Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art’s Physical Video ON TOUR. Physical Video’ is an exhibition featuring examples of performance and theatricality in video art from the 1970s to the present day. Many of the video works demonstrate the resurgence of direct-to-camera performance. Henri Van Noordenburg from QAGOMA will be offering more insight into the exhibition with a floor talk at 5pm on March 27th before he officially opens the exhibition at 6pm. Live Music by local singer Kate Anbeek and canapes and a bar are available on the night. Exhibition Opening 5PM – 8 PM Friday 27th March FREE EVENT: All welcome. Ridgewood Hall photo fair It’s on again! Ridgewood Hall is running the Photo Fair again in June 2020. It is open to all amateur photographers. Advice regarding Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Stand apart but let’s work together As we are all aware the Coronavirus pandemic is sweeping across the globe. At time of print there are 756 cases in Australia, 144 of those in Queensland, including confirmed cases on the Sunshine Coast. The Government has put a limit on non essential gatherings of 100 inside and 500 people outside. Multiple sporting events, concerts and festivals have been cancelled. These measures have been taken to slow down or contain the spread of the vius so our health system can function effectively. We need to have enough beds and intensive care equipment to treat those who will need it. Anyone arriving from overseas is to self-quarantine for 14 days. We are all to be aware of social distancing, meaning keeping at 1.5 metres away from each other, no handshaking, kissing or hugs. We are to be rigorous about handwashing. We are to wipe down surfaces and sneeze or cough into our elbows, and to stay home if we are sick. We need to take these precautions seriously to minimise the health, social and economic ramifications this virus will have in our community.

Page 12 - Cooroy Rag, March 25, 2020

The main advice from our Government is to stay informed by visiting the Qld Government Health Website https://www.qld.gov.au/ health/conditions/health-alerts/coronaviruscovid-19 The following information is current from date of print (March 20, 2020): If you are concerned that you have Coronavirus (From the Qld Government Health website): If you develop a fever, a cough, sore throat or shortness of breath within 14 days of overseas travel, contact a doctor or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84). The website also has an online quiz asking: 1. Are you feeling unwell with symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath. 2. Have you travelled overseas within the last 14 days. 3. Have you been in contact with someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19. If you answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions you are advised to: See a doctor immediately. Call ahead to your GP or emergency department and mention your symptoms and travel history so they can prepare for your visit. Cooroy Family Medical has advised that the Government has now made Telehealth consults available. After this consult you may be sent for testing at QML. Your doctor will send a referral to QML and you will need to make an appointment. There are two QML testing centres on the Sunshine Coast. One at Noosaville and one at Mountain Creek. If you have not been overseas within the last

14 days or have not been in contact with anyone with a confirmed case of COVID-19 you will not be tested for novel coronoavirus (COVID-19). You will be advised to monitor your symptoms and stay home as “it is more likely you have another virus like a cold or influenza”. Queensland Health is encouraging all people who are unwell to stay home to prevent the spread of germs.

Sunshine Coast Fever Clinic locations Fever clinics have been activated in the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service region: • Caloundra Health Service’s Minor Injury and Illness Clinic • Virtual Clinic (available with a referral via GP, 13HEALTH, public health unit or other healthcare provider) • Sunshine Coast University Hospital • Gympie Hospital • Nambour General Hospital Nurses will be stationed just inside the emergency department entrances to pre-triage patients and direct them straight to the clinics as necessary.

Do you need help? The Cooroy Rag has opened up its Facebook Page so we can all do what we can to help each other. If you need help with anything or can offer help with anything please use the Cooroy Rag Community Newspaper’s Facebook Page to connect.

Queensland Health advice is to always have some extra food at home and other supplies like medications and baby needs or pet food, however there is no need to excessively stockpile anything. Qld Health suggests to prepare an emergency kit to last for 14 days.

Noosa District SHS raised over $2,500 for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. Two Year 12 and three Year 9 students shaved their head for the cause generating school-wide attention and support. These five brave students had their own individual reasons to commit to this cause, but moreover, they wanted to raise awareness and funds for this important issue in their society. Other students and teachers also coloured their hair with hairspray, cheered on by a huge crowd in the school hall. Tewantin hair salon Surrender Dorothy provided the hairdressers – ex Noosa District SHS students Julia and Maddie for this wonderful event.

health Council’s new health program gets over 65s moving

COOROY RAG

A new Council initiative is encouraging over 65s to bend and stretch in a bid for better wellbeing. Ageing Well Noosa is a series of low-cost exercise classes for seniors that aims to improve balance, strength and mobility. The program rolls out this month across Noosaville, Cooroy and Cooran. Carers are also welcome and can participate for free. Community Development Officer Cheryl Pattison said these classes were as much about the social benefits as they are the physical. “For as little as five dollars our over 65s can come along and enjoy a range of gentle exercises followed by a few laughs and a free cuppa and biscuits. “We have morning classes on weekdays across Noosaville, Cooroy and Cooran.” Andy Quick from Independence Movement is just one of a handful of qualified instructors who will lead the classes. “These sessions are particularly great for reducing arthritic pain, improving balance and flexibility and for creating a great social hub for over 65s. “As we age we tend to wind down on our physical exercise, so these gentle one-hour exercises are specifically designed to get sen-

iors moving, taking into consideration common ailments such as arthritis and mobility. “Afterwards, everyone comes together for some morning or afternoon tea so it also becomes a great social outing which of course is good for general wellbeing.” Ms Pattison said this new initiative is perfect for Noosa. “It’s important that initiatives like this are available to our ageing population in Noosa. “We really hope locals will commit to staying active and we encourage seniors in Noosa to come along and really make the most of what is on offer,” she said. “For more information we encourage locals to visit our website where there is a new section dedicated to information just for seniors. It includes local and relevant information for seniors on health and wellbeing, transport, My Aged Care, volunteering and much more,” she said. For more information visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/seniors-1. To book in for an exercise class call 0452 255 527 (Noosaville), or 0449 047 746 (Cooran/ Cooroy). The program is supported by the Federal Government’s Department of Health.

Changes in eyesight can creep up on you A recent survey has found that a majority of 70year-olds are not aware how poor their vision is or that improvements could be made by either getting glasses or updating their prescription. The research, conducted by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, found that despite a significant majority of 70-year-olds being satisfied with their vision, many overestimated how well they could actually see. Additionally, 61.5% of respondents were also able to see better by either getting glasses or changing the power of the ones they currently had. “Visual impairment can creep up on you,

Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, March 25, 2020

making it difficult to notice that your eyes are getting worse,” optometrist Jenny Currie from optometry@cooroy, said. “So it’s a good idea to visit an optometrist regularly when you get older, even if you don’t feel your sight has changed.” Another notable finding of the survey was that people struggled to perceive their own eyesight and visual shortcomings, as well as develop an informed understanding about how it is in reality. Among the survey participants whose vision had deteriorated, the majority still regarded their eyesight as good. Participants filled out an ocular mobility questionnaire that asked how they perceived their eyesight and how visual problems affect their everyday lives. Researchers then took a proportion of survey respondents and examined their central vision, peripheral vision and contrast sensitivity. Participants also received retinal photographs to check for disease. “Above all, it was reduced contrast sensitivity that made people think their sight was poor,” Professor Madeleine Zetterberg, co-author of the study, said. “Impaired visual acuity or visual field defects had less of an impact on how they perceived their own eyesight.” Good eyesight is very important for quality of life, driving and sport. For anyone over the age of 65 years old, it is recommend that they get a full comprehensive eye test every year. This will ensure that poor vision does not sneak up on you and surprise you by accident. For more information or to make an appointment, call in to optometry@cooroy at 62 Maple Street, phone us on 5442 555 or go to www.optometryatcooroy.com.au

The children decided it was time to create a kindness project for some of their BIGGEST supporters ... their wonderful Mums and Dads! The children presented their parents with ‘Love Books.” The books contain a variety of kindness vouchers, including: a bedroom clean (with no complaints!), a great big long-lasting super hug, a hand or shoulder massage, a nice long conversation with no devices allowed, assistance with dinner preparation, and a movie date (this one may be a little beneficial to the children too!) “Parents do so much for us!” -Maddie. “They take us out to

Age only matters if it’s wine or cheese

Vets, Lionel & Mike

There is an old adage that age only matters if you are wine or cheese. It is certainly true at Cooroy Veterans’ Golf Club which has instituted an award that recognises service and commitment over a long period. Three members have been bestowed the honour of Gold

Membership for continuous membership of at least 25 years. They are Lionel Willett, Mike Miklenda and John Stewart. Lionel and Mike are pictured proudly wearing the prestigious Gold Membership golf shirt.

Lionel and good friend Ed Otto were founding members of Cooroy Vets back in 1981. Lionel is very proud of the fact that he played in every Queensland Vets Championships for 30 years from 1984. After finishing 2nd on a couple of occasions

Lionel won the BGrade Championships playing at Oxley in 2003 off a 9 handicap. All three Gold Members regularly play club competitions and from time to time appear on the winners list, much to the bewilderment of club ‘Junior Vets’. Lionel and Mike are both in their nineties – a great achievement and commitment. Cooroy Vets is proud of the achievements and participation of members, all of whom are aged 55 years or older, and puts this down to a philosophy that being a veteran golfer is not solely about golf or indeed winning. The camaraderie and providing a friendly, supportive social environment for members is an essential part of the experience. It is a great way to meet new friends and provides a platform for social interaction between people from all walks

Plan to replace cancelled ANZAC services with nationwide ‘light salute’ A proposal to replace cancelled Anzac Day services with a massive nationwide “light salute” from the safety of Australians’ driveways is going viral online - and has been supported by one of the most senior RSL officials. Responding to news that domestic and overseas services on April 25 have been axed due to coronavirus precautions, those keen to maintain some form of commemoration began workshopping ideas at relevant social media hubs like AnzacLive. The proposal taking shape is for householders to gather at a set time before dawn in their driveway - or in a window or balcony where they can maintain a safe social distance - with a light or flame to take part in the minute’s silence and other key gestures of commemoration, accompanied by a national broadcast that people could listen to on their radio or other devices. It has been announced just such a service will be held at the Australian War Memorial, with no congregation but broadcast and streamed live. It met with approval from ACT RSL President John King, who said such an alternative act of commemoration would be an important form of relief for the many members and ordinary Australians distressed at the prospect of Anzac Day passing with no services.

of life in the same age demographic irrespective of golfing ability. Through membership of the Sunshine Coast District Veteran Golfers Association, Cooroy Vets have the opportunity to play some of the best golf courses on the Sunshine Coast at reasonable cost under the District Host Day Program. The number one motivating factor for playing golf is fun and enjoyment, followed by the social nature of the game, so the club takes an innovative approach to the format for competitions. The aim is to make it an enjoyable experience by combining physical activity with exercising the mind in the company of friends - a healthy combination. The approach must be working as field numbers for the club weekly Wednesday competition have been at record levels this year.
