Jim Austin, Heather Manders and Barry Stewart (Lions) with Peter Lavin and Natasha Brown (Wimmers) COOROY Pomona Lions Club is thrilled to announce Wimmers Soft Drink as a new major sponsor for the King of the Mountain festival. Noosa Beverages, which produces Wimmers Soft Drink and Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, will pour a sparkling $10,000 into the 2014 festival. Peter Lavin, owner of Noosa Beverages, said he is excited by the prospect of assisting event organisers, the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, to make the event internationally recognised. “There is a strategy to revitalise the King of the Mountain and we are right behind it,” Peter said. “It’s heartening that two well-respected and much-loved Hinterland icons have united to work together. Both represent and retain traditional values while seeing the need to move forward and progress with the times”. The sponsorship agreement is part of Wimmers’ ongoing commitment to support local communities, not for profit organisations and events. King of the Mountain chairperson, Heather Manders, said, “It’s amazing that these two incredible icons with a combined history of over 100 years are

making plans for the future. The King of the Mountain is now in its 36th year and this sponsorship means we can look forward to it getting bigger and better” she said. Heather acknowledges the valuable contribution of our existing sponsors Bendigo Bank. Bendigo Bank continues to be the major sponsor of the main race and this is known as the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge. Wimmers Office Manager, Tash Brown said, “We are very excited at the opportunity to support and grow the King of the Mountain Festival, which is a fantastic community event. It’s great to be on board and we recognize the great commitment and time volunteers put into this event and also the existing sponsors contributions”. The festival, held on the 27th July 2014, will now be known as ‘Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival and still remains a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club.

COOROY RAG

IN the late 1920s, I was a boy, living at Corinda, on the Brisbane River, and spent my boyhood and youth on or in the water. Across the River was the Lone Pine Sanctuary, where Cam Reid, a World War One soldier, had established a” tourist resort” and who became the first person to breed the koala in captivity. Until then, it was a period of open slaughter for the koala, and in 1927, the Queensland Govenment licensed ten thousand trappers, and so many koalas were killed that 600,000 “pelts” called “beaver” and “Adelaide Chinchilla” were exported. Three years before that, it is believed that two million skins were exported from Eastern Australia, and early extinction seemed inevitable. It is ironical that Cam Reid could only get approval to keep four koalas in captivity, and it is from these four came all the koalas he bred at his Sanctuary. When he began his project in 1927, he knew nothing about koalas except that he liked them! Some of we kids got to know Cam Reid (we called him Mister Reid) and his work- he was a nice ,kindly man and always happy to talk to us. He recognized our shared interest in, and our love for, the koala. The handsome German Shepherd dog, “Strongheart”,who paraded patiently for the tourists with a koala perched on his back was also a good friend, as was the resident Carpet Python, who tolerated being photographed wrapped around peoples’ necks. Wonderful and interesting days. The sole diet of the koala is eucalyptus leaves. Not any sort of leaves - of the hundreds of eucalyptus varieties, only about seven are eaten for sustenance, and only another dozen or so for medicine or “dessert”. Without its selective diet, the koala would die. At birth it is only about twenty five millimeters long, and it remains in the pouch for about six months, feeding on the mother’s milk. After weaning, it stays in the pouch for another couple of months before it emerges, and is carried on her back. The indigenous people did not eat the koalas, because their flesh was unpalatable due to the powerful eucalyptus flavour. While they are soft and cuddly, their claws are sharp and strong. On one occasion, I saw a heap of shrubbery floating down the middle of the river, and on board was a youngish koala. I swam out and rescued it. It was terrified, and clung closely to my bare torso, and for my trouble I was given a painful and bloody demonstration of the sharpness of koala claws! Koalas are essentially tree dwellers and slow moving, easy prey for dogs, and foxes. It is estimated that the koala population has decreased by two thirds in the last ten years, and the biggest predator is man, who has cut down the forests, and built houses, and run over these totally harmless animals with his cars. Nothing to be proud of! Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue is a not for profit, 24hr statewide rescue service for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas. They also work with the community to educate the public on koala awareness and plant food trees to promote future habitat. For more information phone 0423 618 740 or 0431 300 729.

The Koala – cute, cuddly and cause for concern The Koala is a popular resident, in any wild life sanctuary or zoo, Not only with the littlies, but all the grown-ups too, And when celebrities come to visit us from overseas, A photo cuddling a koala is a must, and always sure to please. While most animals live on grass, or fruit, or meat, Special gum leaves are the only things, that our koalas eat, Perhaps because of this bland, and very restricted diet, Their temperament and lifestyle, are pleasant, shy, and quiet. The koala’s soft fur is grey, while his underneath is white, They like to sleep all day, and move about at night. Sadly but it is a fact, and a matter of great regret, That the koala is under constant, thoughtless human threat. Because we are destroying his forests, his habitat, his food, The result of man’s environmental ineptitude. The wildlife authorities are doing their level best, To have this problem recognized, and suitably addressed. But don’t waste time and effort, seeking who to blame, The biggest predator is man himself, to his eternal shame. This cuddly, inoffensive, little fellow, does no one any harm, I think his situation, gives cause for deep alarm. Jim Dunstan Those who bring sunshine into the life of others cannot keep it from themselves

The Cooroy Ragettes helped Jim Dunstan celebrate his 96th birthday on March 19 with a lunch at Hasting Street’s Bistro C Best wishes Jim, let’s do it again next year :)

Once registered you have until the May event to brainstorm and create your art piece. MANAGER of the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Geoff Edwards, is genuinely excited about the forthcoming Wearable Art competition at the 2014 Australian Body Art Carnivale. “As the Wearable Art sponsor for the second year, we can’t wait to see the creations to emerge at this year ’s event. It is fantastic for us to be supporting a local community arts event that showcases both emerging and established designers and also has a sustainability message,” says Geoff. The challenge for artists is to create garments from recycled materials or items that have had a “life before”, sending an important sustainability message to the wider community. Garments must be created from reused or second hand materials anything from recycled

textiles to household goods to industrial or other discarded items. Bicycle parts, hardware items, kitchen treasures, computer parts, old curtains … let your imagination run wild. The works will be paraded on Sunday 4 May at the Australian Body Art Carnivale in Eumundi. “I encourage crafty creative members of the local Cooroy community to give this wonderful community arts event a go,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. “It’s a unique opportunity for artists and designers of all ages and levels of experience to express themselves, and we know the Noosa hinterland is bursting with talent. Judges look for creative edge and originality of material, so designers are encouraged to think outside the square when brain-

storming their wearable art designs.” Wearable Art designs do not have to be practical or commercially viable, but they must be Wearable on the catwalk. The theme for the 2014 competition is DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES, and artists must weave the competition theme into their creations – be it a dream, nightmare or both. Registrations are open for the Bendigo Bank Wearable Art Competition with entry forms available for download at www.australian bodyart.com.au. Looking for a fun, colourful and inclusive way to decorate the Bendigo Community Bank Entertainment Tent, organisers are asking the entire Cooroy community to join in making pom poms which will be made into garlands and hung in the tent and other locations. The record stands at nearly 7,000 pom poms – that’s around 3.5 pom poms each for the entire population of Cooroy! We can do it! Cooroy Library, Mobile Library and Butter Factory Arts Centre are all set up with wool, templates and instructions – so come and make a pom pom or two anytime between now and the Corooy Fusion Festival Day itself on Saturday 10 May 2014, and let the record-breaking begin!

A PETITION signed by 1354 residents stating their desire to keep the Cooroy Bowls Club zoned as Sports and Recreation has been submitted to Noosa

council. Petitioners are concerned that developers will buy the Bowls Club, which recently went on the market. The Cooroy Bowls Club amalgamated with

the Cooroy RSL Club in 2005 and the RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club has now found itself in financial crisis with the committee making the decision to sell the Opal Street property to alleviate debt. The Kerr Family gifted this land to the Bowls Club in 1949. Mr Gale Duffield, an RSL member, spoke on behalf of the petitioners stating that: “The Bowling Community and many RSL Club Members, reluctantly accept the need for the sale of the Property in order to provide funds to alleviate the financial crisis existing at the RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club Inc - but not at the expense of the loss of the facility to the current 200 plus members and future would-be

participants. “There are Local Investors who are bidding for the Property with the intent of permitting the Cooroy Bowls Club to be re-created and provided for as tenants. The Bowlers would welcome this opportunity and the known figures of their financial support for the current operation, would make the local ownership viable. “One of the Local tenderers is the well known Christensen Family who are making the effort solely for this purpose. “The family has been associated with the Cooroy Bowls Club prior to its amalgamation with the RSL Club in 2005 and since inception in 1949.” The site is being marketed by Colliers International as a “Cooroy

infill opportunity” with possible uses as “land/ development hotel/leisure/other on the 3352sqm site. “Our lovely green must look like a ready made Car Park to whoever is behind this,” said Mr Duffield. “The Local purchase option will permit the survival of both the RSL Club and the Bowls Club and it is the intention of the Petition, and the goodwill of all concerned, to make this happy ending occur.” The RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club Board met last Thursday to discuss Expressions of Interest. RSL Manager, Tina Bernard, said that they had received more than expected, but was unable to provide more information at this stage.

BOUQUETS to the students (Prep-Grade 12) from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy. On Friday 28th February they were delivered by school bus around the precincts of Cooroy. Networking night THE Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual networking night on Tuesday 1st April at the Cooroy State School Hall. Bookings are essential as there is limited space and these are always a popular night attracting attendees from a wide selection of businesses and community groups. Both members and non-members of the Chamber are encouraged to attend. “This is a great networking night as it is intimate enough that you really get to know people and large enough that you can make quite a few contacts. “Past attendees have said they have developed new business relationships that have resulted in positive outcomes for them at these meetings. We get particularly good feedback from home based businesses as we have lots of those in the area and it is often more difficult for them to make connections because they don’t normally have a shop front. Regardless of your type of business or location it is a great forum with all types of businesses represented,” explained Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. Tickets are $10 which includes finger food and facilitated networking by Our Town Apps. There is a cash bar also available. Booking and pre-payment are essential by Friday 28 March. Bookings can be made with Tania at Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy, via email to bookings@cooroy.com.au; or online at www.trybooking.com/EKGM.

A FEW weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of protecting your income and your ability to earn an income. You do this by way of Personal Risk Insurance. This Personal Risk Insurance comes in several forms including Income Protection, Trauma Insurance, and Life Insurance. Last time we focused on Income Protection Insurance and its ability to replace your income should you be unwell and able to work. Let’s look at Trauma Insurance. It can seem similar to Income Protection however it is generally a ‘lump sum’ paid to an individual when you suffer or are diagnosed with a specific illness. The types of illnesses covered can vary however the common ones tend to be cancer, heart attack, and stroke. A lump sum amount is chosen when the policy is taken and this the amount paid if necessary. This insurance is to be taken on its own or in conjunction with another type of Personal Risk Insurance. Unfortunately, the likelihood of people suffering these types of illnesses is increasing. Fortunately, the survival rate for these illnesses is also high. People however need funds to assist them through this. Therefore, we are seeing an increased demand for this type of insurance. There are also many factors to consider when identifying an amount to insure for. These include: • Possible medical and rehabilitation costs. • Ongoing nursing or carer costs. • Change of living environment such as moving to better accommodation or home modifications.

• Living expenses while you recovering. What we don’t want to see is any of these traumatic circumstances use up equity in peoples’ homes or depleting life savings. Life Insurance is probably the more well known type of insurance. It is generally paid as a lump sum on the death of the person insured. This type of insurance is well known however what common discussion is often around is the amount to insure for. Some want to cover primarily debt while others want to include additional funds. Unfortunately what we see is remaining living family can find themselves in financial difficulty within a short period of time after the death of the primary breadwinner. Trauma and Life Insurance are important. There are many and varied options available and all are best discussed with a professional Financial Planner to assist with correct policy and coverage. If you have any questions about any form of insurance, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG

Is it time to downsize? Back in the day, a big house made sense with plenty of room out back for the kids to play in and plenty of room inside for the family to spread out. But now the kids have flown the nest, you may be starting to feel as though you’re rattling around a bit. If it’s something you’ve been thinking about, this holiday season could be a good time to float the idea, when your family comes together to celebrate the festivities. The case for downsizing… A big house can mean big bills—summer and winter. And then there’s the cleaning, the gardening, the upkeep… sometimes it can feel as though the house is getting on top of you, particularly if you’re on your own or you have health issues. Downsizing may also have an impact on your insurance arrangements, reducing your premiums as you reduce your belongings and the contents of your home. Also, if you haven’t finished paying off your mortgage, downsizing could also mean a lower mortgage payment, which could make a real difference to your cash flow— short-term and long-term. What’s more, the idea of a tree change or a sea change can be very appealing. Imagine waking up to the smell of eucalypts or sea breezes every morning. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In a recent study, 43 per cent of respondents who had moved since turning 50 had downsized.[1] So selling the family home, freeing up some equity and downsizing to a smaller

By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

property could be starting to make sense. But there can be a downside—both emotional and financial. There’s a lifetime of memories in these walls—after all, your kids grew up in this house. Downsizing means you will need to sell or give away the belongings and collectibles you’ve amassed over a lifetime, but you won’t need any more. It’s harder when it comes to mementos and your children’s belongings, but limited space in a smaller house will mean some things will have to go. There can also be practical difficulties with selling up and downsizing. Many Australian suburbs are dominated by large family homes and lack the sort of medium-density housing stock that would suit older couples. You might need to move further afield to find a suitable place. But that means uprooting yourself. You’ve got a lot of social capital invested in your local area and you may not want to move to a far-flung town or suburb where you’d have to start again. There’s also the matter of the kids’ inheritance. The family home can be a tax-effective way to pass wealth on to the next generation. Then there’s the age pension income and assets tests. After a lifetime of hard work, you deserve to maximise your entitlements. The family home is exempt from the assets test. But if you sell your home for $1 million and buy a $500,000 apartment, your $500,000 profit will be included in the as-

sets test and can be included in the income test where it is invested. Take control online • Thinking about downsizing, but not sure how it will affect your retirement finances? THE Noosa Club held a very successful meeting on the 1st of March with 55 in attendance, 23 of these were visitors. I hope the visitors enjoyed themselves and will return. The club is there to promote the culture of orchids and help one and other in learning how to grow while making new friends. John Green spoke on growing the right type of Dendrobiums for this area. They are very easy to cultivate and flower under our conditions. Next meeting John will speak on the Queensland Floral emblem Dendrobium bigibbum (Cooktown Orchid). The meetings are held in the Tinbeerwah hall on the first Saturday of each month starting at 1.30pm. The club also hosts a Mother’s Day show in Cooroy in conjunction with Cooroy Fusion. The show is open on Friday 9th & Saturday 10th May. There will be plenty of exotic orchids to see and purchase. Please support your local community. For more information please contact 54832764 or visit the Noosa Orchid Society web site.

Become a member of the Board FINALLY we are able to proceed with the membership in Cooroy Lower Mill Board. We have been working toward this for some months now and with the New Noosa Council now in place we feel this is the right time to proceed with our membership plans. Why Membership in CLMB? History of the Mill Board: For 10+ years a small group of people have dedicated a lot of time and energy to saving our Mill site following the closure of the Mill in 2000 with the loss of 80+jobs. The initial intent was to try to bring employment back into Cooroy. The Cooroy Task force was formed with some 15 initial members dedicated to bringing jobs back into Cooroy. It was a rocky road but we, with the deep support of then mayor Bob Abbot managed to have the state government donate the land (9acres) to the council for the community. We were all excited about having such a large block of land adjacent to the CBD dedicated to community uses. Of course one portion was sold to Ritek Buildiing Solutions, who then brought the jobs with them that we were focused on creating. Here again, Bob Abbot played a pivotal role. The monies from the sale of the land were used to flood proof a portion of lot 5 and to build the road into the property for serving Ritek and the other tenants of the subdivision. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the hard work that Shaun Walsh has put into this project with no bill for the work. Since then, the Mill Board, (formerly the Task Force) have been busy restoring those buildings that were worth saving and developing a precinct for visitor and locals to use and enjoy. Council moved the woodworkers and camphor laurel project to the north side of the creek and with some re-jigging of Marara Steet we managed to fit a $10 million dollar library onto the land adjacent to the Butter Factory. What a success this project has been for Cooroy. Members of the Mill Board were present from day one as

members of the Project Control Group working closely with council to bring this project to life. Since then, we have done a lot of landscaping, underground wiring along with park benches, and many improvements to the Boiler house area. Recently we acknowledged the Noosa District High School students who suggested the construction of the Log Maze recently opened to the public. Dr Ruth Greenaway was instrumental in bringing our two forces together. Slowly the site is taking shape and as money becomes available another project is launched. Soon we hope to build a stage which was incorporated in our original draft master plan and approved by the original Noosa Council. Our Vision Statement is – A DESIGN FOR LIVING: “To develop and sustain facilities on the Cooroy Lower Mill Site for present and future generations of the community with balanced consideration to history, culture, education, arts and economics.” Membership in CLMB gives you insights into the future plans as well as canvasses ideas from you for further developments on the site. Membership gives you voting rights so at the AGM your vote will elect your board members for the next year. As a member you can also nominate for a position on the board. During each year there will be at least two meetings for members wherein you will be offered inside glimpses on what the CLMB plans ahead and get an insider’s view of how you might become a participant. We invite you to participate in the development of this most beautiful precinct for the greater good of our community. We hope you will fill out the attached membership form and mail it along with $20 for your membership this year. Membership runs from March 1st each year. AGM is in Mid-May, Tax receipts will be issued. Phone Tex: 0412768645 Peter Musk: 54426891 for more information. Tex Pipke, President, Cooroy Lower Mill Board Inc.

IT was all alarms and sirens as Cooroy Library joined forces with the SES and Fire Service to show sixty grade one students how exciting libraries and reading can be. The local rescue services staged a mock-up accident rescue scene at the Cooroy Precinct, with the kids beautifully evacuating the building to find outside fire engines and flood boats waiting for them. The visit was part of the ‘Bringing Boys Back to Books’ initiative that aimed to use the exciting world of emergency services and safety to teach students from Cooroy State School about books and the power of literacy.

Median strip vegetation clearing THE Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised that the vegetation clearing and safety works currently being undertaken between the Pine Rivers Bridge and Cooroy is expected to take about four months to complete, weather permitting. It forms part of the Safer Roads Sooner project which involves the removal of vegetation and regrowth on the centre median and each side of the highway to improve driver visibility and driver safety. Funding in the 2013/14 program is for the removal of hazards located close to the road so that the likelihood and/or severity of road crashes can be reduced. Between Yandina and Coolum, the majority of vegetation in the centre median has grown to a size and density where it is considered a safety risk for any errant vehicle leaving the

highway that may collide with these trees. Whereas at one stage in their growth, they would have bent with the impact, this is no longer the case. This project is an opportunity to protect motorists against future crashes and as such, the trees that are not yet fully grown are also being cleared. Plants that have already died or are heavily infested with constricting vines, are also being removed. Concerns were also raised with headlight glare. This was considered but due to the width of the centre median, it is not considered a significant risk. The project needs to be carried out at night, generally between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Friday so as to reduce daytime traffic impacts on the highway.

BID Stimson arrived in Cooroy Christmas Eve 2004 to start a new chapter of her life with husband Stim, daughter Rhonda and son in law Mike Studwell, in their new house at Tinbeerwah. While shopping at IGA she noted how friendly everyone was, with singers in the aisle and none of the last minute Christmas fuss. Bid commented on how nice this was and thought she’d made the right decision to move to this area. She joined the congregation of the Cooroy Uniting Church and a couple of weeks later one of the ladies said hello in the street “we’re locals now “she said, and from that day on her standing in the community grew. Bid passed away on 9th March at Kabara, and last Tuesday, friends and family packed the Cooroy Uniting Church to remember Bid with a beautiful service led by Pastor David Fanning. Happy memories of Bid were shared by daughters,

Carol and Rhonda, grandchildren Cameron and Katrina and great granddaughter Savannah. Bid and Stim were married in 1942 and lived on the Stimson family farm at Tumbi Umbi NSW for 62 years. As market gardeners they were renowned for their tasty tomatoes and ran a fruit and vegetable shop “Stimmy’s Stall” for many years. Her love of gardening produced beautiful roses in a cottage garden and there was always a stunning bouquet of home grown flowers for any special occasion. Bid was always an active member of her community and in 2003 received the Australian Government Centenary Award medal for community service particularly with children with cerebral palsy. She was also a foundation member of meals on wheels at The Entrance NSW and spent many years cooking and delivering meals to the elderly. As a couple, Bid and Stim loved dancing and

were the ones everyone followed at local socials. Their passion for dancing extended to a learn to dance night each week for the local youth, which developed into a weekly dance at their home when they became avid square dancers. Many couples in the Tumbi area met their partners at such events so there was a time when Bid and Stim seemed to be attending a lot of weddings. Tennis was a big part of her youth and her competitive spirit made up for any lack of skill. Visiting teams always loved playing against Bid’s team, not so much for the game, but the supper. As a champion sponge cook jam rolls and recess lemon cheese sponges were a winner. When Bid moved to Cooroy, her community spirit continued, joining the Tewantin Seniors group and Terrys stretching classes, The Cooroy Uniting Church, Care and Share, The Cooroy Rag Newspaper rollers group, and accompanied Rhonda to Steppin

in Line dancers, where she would enjoy the company of the line dancers, tap in time to the music, while knitting jumpers to send to the orphanage in Cambodia. In August 2012,Bid suffered a stroke and moved to Kabara. Her

time there was spent in the care of the nurses, carers and volunteers who treated her with love and dignity. It is no wonder the church was packed for her funeral, she was a remarkable woman who had lived a full and fortunate life.

police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

IT is an undeniable fact that much of the juvenile related crime that has plagued Cooroy over the past 18 months or so is directly related to youths accessing drugs and alcohol. The vast majority of times when police have been called to intervene in a situation and had cause to arrest or otherwise deal with juveniles they have been under the influence of liquor or drugs. In the past police have prosecuted two adults for the unlawful sample of liquor to juveniles and are seeking to prosecute further instances of this occurring where enough evidence exists to launch a prosecution. The local bottle shops and licensed premises have greatly assisted police in this issue by checking 100% of identifications where age is an issue and I am confident that the problem does not lie with our licensed premises but more with grossly irresponsible adults and sometimes even parents supplying their children with alcohol without any form of supervision or awareness of the consequences. All parents or adults supposedly in charge of juveniles who facilitate juveniles accessing alcohol are hereby placed on notice that should that juvenile be detained by police in a public area acting unlawfully or adversely affected by alcohol the action of the responsible adult will be closely scrutinised with the view of launching a prosecution should the evidence reveal the irresponsible supply of alcohol to that child. Of great concern to police in recent times has been the instance of youths sniffing glue and paint to get a high, which is extremely worrying. Police have been proactive in this area and have approached retail outlets to restrict the sale of these items to juveniles but parents and the community in general need to be aware that this is occurring and report any tell tale signs of substance abuse to the police. Generally speaking youths partaking in this practice will be seen breathing into plastic bags and in possession of cans of paint or contact glue. Glue and paint may

www.cooroyrag.com.au

be seen on the face and hands of kids and signs of intoxication often mimic excessive alcohol consumption. This type of substance abuse has huge implications upon the health of the child so please report all possible sightings of this taking place so we can get the child some help. Police have also targeted the unlawful use and supply of dangerous drugs with a particular focus on drugs being supplied to juveniles contributing to unlawful activity around town. A number of Search Warrants were executed in late February in and around Cooroy resulting in 10 offenders being charged with 25 drug related offences. Drugs located included cannabis, cannabis plants, amphetamines, needles and equipment used to produce and supply dangerous drugs. Some of these prosecutions are directly linked to the unlawful supply of drugs to local juveniles and I am confident that the recent improvement that the town has seen in regards the attitude of kids around town and lack of offences is directly linked to police actions and the proactive attitude that many of the community have displayed in regards this issue. Can I encourage the community to keep informing police of suspected drug users and suppliers so we can continue to target this behaviour. The Police Central Region of which the Sunshine Coast District is a part of recently launched a Traffic Safety Week where increased police presence on the road together with driver education initiatives were utilised by police in an endeavour to bring the rising road toll under control. Police are targeting the fatal five offences namely drink driving, failure to wear seat belts, fatigue, speeding and driver inattention. The two “Black Spot areas in Cooroy are the Noosa Cooroy Road and the Bruce Hwy so the majority of patrols will take place in those areas with increased RBT and Speed Detection being utilised in other problem areas.

Every Sculpture is a highly individual, composite yet minimalist piece” Mary’s work has received international recognition being shortlisted for the “Melbourne Sculpture Prize “. Kenilworth artist Leisa Gunton received a highly commended at the Gympie Goldrush Art Prize last year for her mixed media acrylic, ‘Sunlight in Booloumba’, normally known for her ceramic work, Leisa embraces all media to represent her love for Booloumba Creek, and surrounding rainforests, as the need for protecting these these dwindling areas become more important than ever. Ready for some drama? A NEW theatre school has opened its doors in the Hinterland. The Farmhouse Theatre Company based in the Cooran Memorial School of Arts started with a bang this year claiming 28 students for its start-up term. Company director and tutor Louise Bezel (nee Birgan) is overjoyed with the school’s grand beginnings. “I am thrilled that so many students want to explore acting. So much is to be gained from acting classes; of course there is the creative expression but classes are also great for social interaction, confidence and learning to speak up and out.” Louise Bezel is not a stranger to the acting and teaching business. She trained as a professional actor at the illustrious Guildhall School of music and Drama in London and then went

on to have a long and successful career starring in film, TV and theatre. She moved to Queensland to bring up a young family and began using her drama skills to teach young actors. Louise now teaches with NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) in Brisbane. “I have developed an infinite passion for teaching actors. Living in a small community I have realized a lot of children here don’t have access to acting classes and the development they can bring. “I opened the Farmhouse Theatre Company to give young people this opportunity.” For more information/enrolment package please contact FTC on PH: 0427271724 or Email: farmhousetheatreco@gmail.com

artist Lin Martin and Vie de Pacifique – “Pacific Life”. Presented will be Händel’s Violin Sonata in D (Op 1 No 13), Harpsichord Suite in Bb (HWV 434) and the enchanting Nine German Arias (HWV202 – 210). Maple St Acupuncture welcomes Sue Nelson

SUE Nelson is well known in Cooroy, helping the community and surrounds with their health for over 30 years! Sue’s first encounter with the dynamic energy of Qi points made the hairs on the back of her

neck stand up! That was over 30 years ago when she studied Acupressure in Brisbane. Sue was so impressed with this versatile system of medicine that she went on to study Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs in the mid-1980s as one of the ‘grandparent’ pioneers (Acupuncture knowledge was ‘kept’ from the West until the late 1970s). Since that time Sue has had clinics at various locations in Gympie, Noosa and the hinter-

land. She has also taught Acupuncture subjects at two Brisbane colleges. Her specialty areas have evolved into the following: • Musculo-Skeletal Back and Joint problems • Gut and Liver/Gall Bladder cleansing • Hormonal Problems (especially Menopause) • Prevention and Treatment of Lung problem (Asthma, Hayfever, Sinus, Colds, Whooping Cough, Stubborn Flus) • Skin problems (especially Eczema) • Viral and Bacterial

problems such as Lyme Disease. Sue’s main strength is the ability to focus on you and your health issues for the full treatment. Another strength is her gentle needle technique. And she does love to ‘find’ the exact areas of pain/stagnation by palpating them with her fingers, especially when doing Back treatments. Sue is very much a ‘hands on’ therapist. Sue loves using Tradi-

tional Chinese Medicine in the form of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal formulas because she knows the system is so well defined, it can address most health problems, even the strange and complex cases (many stories to tell)! Sue is excited to be back in Cooroy in the lovely, centrally located Maple Street clinic with Amy and co. You can book in with Sue any Wednesday. Contact the clinic on 07 5442 5526.

Foot Pain? Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Talk to the Experts

Getting weaker, losing your balance, having falls? UNFORTUNATELY all of these things seem to occur as we get older. And with an increase in the chance of falls, the chance of injuries such as broken hips, wrists and shoulders increases also. However they don’t have to be “just a part of getting older”. Unchecked, weakness of the legs, loss of balance and a subsequent loss of confidence can lead to a loss of independence and enjoyment of life. In some cases it can lead to people being unable to care for themselves at home. Simple exercise programs aimed at addressing weaknesses, balance deficits and general fitness have been shown to greatly reduce the chance of falls in the older age groups. Coupled with advice on reducing the risks of falls at home and when out and the

correct teaching of the use of walking aids, these programs are seeing many more older members of the community safely enjoying activities they thought were beyond them. The physiotherapists at Hinteractive Physio are professionally trained to assess and design appropriate programs depending on your specific weaknesses and situation. They will soon be running a series of Falls Prevention Exercise Classes at the clinic in to further help people at risk. You can call the Physiotherapy clinic directly to get more information – it could be the call that saves you from a nasty injury or, worse still, your loss of independence. Phone Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 for an appointment.

Congratulations Dr Hoda Morris on the arrival of your baby girl Layla

Want to build an Earthship house? IMAGINE living off the grid where houses are cheap to build, can help provide food for the family and are self-heated or cooled all year round. Imagine if your house was handbuilt from free, cheap or recycled materials. At Bellbunya’s next Organic Swap-Meet Cafe and Healing Day on Thursday, 27th March, Ryan Mayne will give a free talk on basic earthship design principals. Find out what is happening around the world with the construction of ecofriendly, sustainable housing. Get tips on making your own home more environmentally friendly and cheaper to live in. See amazing houses made from earth and materials thrown away. Ryan has been touring earthship houses in the States and has come up with some ways to adapt them for the Sunshine Coast climate. The day features a free platform for sell-

ing/buying/swapping organic produce and heirloom seeds in the Sustainable Kitchen organic Cafe. At the same time, healing therapies are offered in the community hall for $10/ session. Last month around 60 people enjoyed fine food and an array of healing sessions, exchanged heirloom seeds and bought fresh organic produce. Alison Smith, newly returned from 6 months at Findhorn Intentional Community in Scotland, gave an inspiring talk for 30 people in the Bellbunya community lounge. The event is held at the Bellbunya Community on the fourth Thursday of each month at 114 Browns Road in Belli Park. The swap-meet cafe opens at 9am, and the talk starts at 10:30am. COOROY RAG

Cooroy Family Practice staff (L to R) Dr Nadee Wickramasuriya, Ruth Berlin, Katrina Knoll, Kathy Whitmore

STAFF at Cooroy Family Practice hosted a free community barbecue on March 21st to mark their four-year anniversary. Cooroy local, Kathy Whitmore, is the Practice Manager. She has spent the past 30 years working in the health services industry and says she’s proud of what Cooroy Family Practice has achieved. “It is becoming really difficult for patients to afford healthcare in Australia, with more and more medical centres scrapping the bulk billing system. We’re really passionate about providing great care no matter what their social background or financial situation. That’s why we offer bulk billing to each and every patient,” Mrs Whitmore said. This humanitarian approach to healthcare is thanks to Practice Owner, Vivianne Dawalibi, who spent two decades working with refugees for the UNHCR in Africa, Asia and Europe before moving to the Sunshine Coast. Ms Dawalibi says the four-year anniversary of the Cooroy Family Practice is a great milestone for the business, which has plans for further expansion. “My vision is to create a health hub in Cooroy. We already offer a range of allied health services at our centre including po-

Trainer raises money for RSPCA ERIN Yarwood recently got a bit of ‘pay back’ from her dedicated clients, but it was all for a good cause. Raising money for the Noosa RSPCA branch, Erin hosted a ‘Train/ Challenge the Trainer’ event at her Personal Training studio in Cooroy. “The afternoon was a huge success. Everyone threw great challenges my way and via donations, together we raised $175.50. This was with no advertising too. Imagine what the next event will achieve!” “I was challenged with wall sits, pushup

competitions and a plank-off! And was thrown numerous, tough exercises that really kept me on my toes! I was very impressed with everyone’s eagerness to give me a great workout! I would like to say a huge thankyou to Cooroy Mountain Spring Water for donating bottled water for the event. Very much appreciated.” Erin will be moving her studio in mid April to bigger premises, so keep an eye out for some great specials coming up! Erin Yarwood - Personal Trainer (E Fitness) 0423 905 744

Big home -30 acres -exceptional value . . . GET ready to be excited! This property has been reduced for immediate sale... Here’s the checklist. 1. 30 acres with views and water 2. Lovely 2002 model home with views 3. Giant mans shed, plus 2nd shed 4. Only minutes to Cooroy CBD, read on Mcduff! This 30 acre property only 5k’s (approx) along Cooroy Belli Creek Rd is a great find, and is being offered here for the 1st time in its current form with a magnificent home and large work shed nestled in a very private and elevated position. Currently the land is being utilised for grazing and small crops thanks to the abundant and reliable water supply. The large diesel pump redirects water easily and efficiently to established irrigation. Even if you are not planning on working the land, and you just want to have that privacy buffer between yourself and your neighbours, this acreage has many more surprises waiting. The epitome of modern country living, this attractive home exudes quality design and thoughtful layout. The 2002 built home is perfectly placed to take full advantage of the beautiful views and rising breezes. This very spacious and inviting 4 bedroom home offers a large formal lounge

room and modern kitchen with combined open planned living room. High ceilings and various roof lines make for an appealing internal feel. The master bedroom has a large ensuite with spa and walk in robe and opens onto the Eastern side of the home perfect for breakfast on the patio. Interestingly all of the 4 bedrooms are large as is the family bathroom. This brick and Colourbond roofed home has an inviting entry foyer and covered portico entrance. The large tiled entertaining area on the Eastern side is an ideal spot for shady afternoon BBQ’s and get togethers overlooking rolling green hills. There is a giant 6 bay high roofed colourbond shed which will take plenty of machinery and toys. An older style studio near the Jacaranda lined driveway would make a fun teenagers or artists retreat. If you are looking for space, privacy, views, close to town, with all important water and you like to feed native birds this property cannot be beaten. The asking price has been set below estimated replacement and reflects the owners genuine interest in a quick sale. Solid foundations offer big savings at Erindale Park

Marc Wood - New Homes Consultant with Ausmar Homes Cooroy GOING the ‘extra mile’ to ensure each lot at Erindale Park, Cooroy enjoys a completely level base could save buyers up to $15,000 in costs according to Marc Wood from local builder Ausmar Homes. Speaking about Cooroy’s newest housing development, Ausmar’s New Homes Consultant Mr Wood said offering level lots at Erindale Park would make a huge difference for buyers and for builders. “There are not many developers that have gone that extra mile and prepared their sites to make them as easy to build on as Erindale Park,” Mr Wood said. “It is certainly costing them money, which is eating into their profits, but it is so much easier to build on because it is maximising

www.cooroyrag.com.au

the use of each site. “Normally site works such as retaining walls and levelling work are extra costs on top of construction for buyers. What Erindale Park is doing, is cutting all the sites, they are actually putting the retaining wall in for each and every site, so people don’t have to worry about that and where they do cut and fill they are compacting the ground to an enginered level. “This basically translates to is a saving of anywhere from $10,000 - $15,000 for the client,” Mr Wood said. Local developers Kev and Val Kelly are committed to ensuring that buyers of house and land packages at Erindale Park enjoy a positive experience from start to finish. “A key part of our vision was to design each lot with a flat building site, and specified that soil compaction be maximised to minimise the cost of foundations to just a few thousand dollars,” Mr Kelly said. “Whether it be first home buyers or people looking to downsize, building a new home is, for most of us, one of the biggest decisions we make lthroughout our lives, and Val and I want it to be an exciting an positive experience for people at Erindale Park. “We live in this community and want to see local people enjoy all that Erindale Park has to offer. “As well as quality homes and generous blocks, the estate will include 7 acres of green parkland, that will features walking trails and bike tracks, that will be easily accessed by residents and the community.” For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

Community working together builds “one of the state’s best Kindergartens” After many years of planning and hard work, it was tools down and celebrations all round as the Cooroy Community Kindergarten enjoyed the official opening of its newly renovated premises on Friday 14 March 2014. Attended by many past and present kindy families, the official opening also attracted a range of important stakeholders including local MP, Peter Wellington, Noosa Council Mayor, Noel Playford, and the North Coast Regional Director of the Department of Education, Training and Employment, Greg Peach. During his speech, Greg Peach acknowledged the long and proud history of the Cooroy Community Kindergarten. “If buildings could talk, this one would have many interesting tales to tell because it was originally used as the former Cooroy West State School from 1911, before being relocated here in 1964 and donated for use by the kindy. “We were proud to support this project because we recognise the value of early childhood education in preparing children for their first years in primary school,” said Mr Peach. The dedicated work of the kindy’s Director, Diana Markovits, was also recognised Ms Markovits has been with the centre for 29 years, which is a remarkable record of service to the local community.

“Over the years the old building has had lots of cosmetic work, but nothing as extensive as this,” said Ms Markovits. Thank you to all those instrumental in achieving what we have today, Mary Valley Drafting, Pacific BCQ and Complete Coastal Constructions and associated contractors for their quality workmanship and their flexibility in undertaking the work.

The renovations were made possible thanks to a national partnership agreement which resulted in more than $170,000 being contributed by the State and Federal Governments. The local community of Cooroy was also recognised by Peter Wellington for its contribution to help raise a further $50,000 over many years. A special “Thank You” to Cooroy Rotary Club for the wonderful support of our event.

Local Clean Up collects record 28.5 Tonnes! YES 28.5 Tonnes! That is the mass of rubbish collected from 30 sites by a record 660 volunteers during Clean Up Australia Day across the Noosa Region. That overwhelming total has left Noosa Integrated Catchment Association Inc (NICA), who organise CUAD in Noosa, and co-ordinator Joe Jurisevic and his volunteer team coming to terms with the vast volume of dumped rubbish and litter collected. With 7.16 tonnes of waste collected from across 29 community based sites cleaned up this year being the second biggest haul collected to date, it shows that littering and dumping is still an issue that the community needs to come to terms with. The decision to tackle an additional site in the Ringtail Creek Forest area and remove close to 22 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish from what has been an illegal dumping hot spot for years shows just how extensive the problem of illegal dumping has become locally, and how complacent some people are when it comes to taking responsibility for the waste that we humans generate. Joe’s idea to try to tackle the illegal dumping in Ringtail Creek Forest came after a pub-

lic consultation meeting last year where HQ Plantations management explained the problem of illegal dumping had so become such an issue, that action had to be taken to close off forestry tracks to the vehicular access to prevent further illegal dumping, protect the public that walk and ride the trails in the forests, and provide an opportunity to deal with the vast amount of rubbish that was already in the forest. With barriers now in place on entry tracks, Joe consulted with forestry management and asked the local 4WD club to volunteer and assist forestry staff and a handful of neighbouring volunteers to tackle the vast quantity of rubbish within the forest boundaries. Armed with 2 tip trucks and a small posi track loader, 4WD utes and trailers and a 10 cubic metre skip, the team managed to remove 6 truck loads and a full skip to total 21.6 tonnes of rubbish on the day, and make a huge impact on improving the state and safety of the forest area. There were also several car bodies and large metal items removed by a contractor in the week prior to the clean up, so the total could have been far greater.

Reagan also won the under 15’s team patrol competition and Jarrad, who was team captain for the under 17’s team also won gold. Jarrad has qualified to contest the Australian champtionships in Perth for both Champion Lifesaver and the Patrol Competition, which will be held in the last week of Term 1. “Next year, when I have finished Year 12, I hope to get into the ADFA and I would like to work in the air force. Surf lifesaving is great mental and physical training for this,” Jarrad said. Reagan has reached the pinnacle of competition as an under 14 competitor and he is very pleased with his two state gold medals.
