Fusion Festival highlights the hinterland

Dennis Massoud will be creating one of his amazing sand sculptures COOROY Fusion Festival highlights all that is fantastic about the beautiful Noosa Hinterland. One of those is how close we are to the beautiful beach at Noosa Heads so this year thanks to the sponsorship of Tourism Noosa, the craft team at Cooroy Fusion Festival are bringing the beach to the hinterland with renowned international sand sculptor, Dennis Massoud! “We throw a lot of ideas around the committee table when organising this event and this was one that just jumped out as something a little bit different. It fits perfectly with our sponsors Tourism Noosa, so we couldn’t resist making it happen,” explained event organiser, Chris Bell. “Based right here in Noosa, Dennis Massoud is a world champion sand sculptor and has turned sand sculpting into a performing art. “He has sculpted sand around the world, and at most major events throughout Australia and his sculptures have been used in television advertisements. So, having him at Fusion Festival just made perfect sense.” “In addition to creating a work of art in front of the Butter Factory on the day, Dennis will also be sharing

some of his skills and secrets by way of workshops in the afternoon”. Cooroy Fusion Festival always has something new and exciting on show and this year the Rock Climbing Wall & Bungy Trampoline is sure to stir up the adrenaline. “This new attraction is thanks to Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland who have been great sponsors of the festival over the years and are always looking to sponsor something exciting and fun,” explained event organiser, Chris Bell. As with almost everything at Cooroy Fusion, this adventurous activity is free and is great for all ages. There are different routes on the walls to cater for all abilities – regardless of whether you have never strapped on a climbing harness before or you are an experienced rock climber. The bungy trampolines add that extra bit of fun and offer up great entertainment for all ages. The rock wall can take 80 climbers in an hour and the bungy trampolines which are attached to the wall can accommodate an additional 40 people per hour so there will be plenty of opportunity for every-

one to have a turn. Some of the other activities at Cooroy Fusion Festival include the Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent; Noosa Council Cooroy Library activities; Cooroy RSL Pickled Possum Bar; Cooroy IGA Tastes of the Hinterland Marquee; Wythes Real Estate Mother’s Day Activities; Tourism Noosa sand sculptor Dennis Massoud; and the Greenwood Grove Geckoes Wildlife Show. There is also the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Annual Show in the Memorial Hall, displays at Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Camphor Laurel, and the Butter Factory Arts Centre; plus market stalls and many other free activities such as rides, face painting and a great entertainment program, none of which would be possible without the generous sponsorships from the Cooroy Rag, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Suttons Cleaning Service, Cooroy Service Centre, Gelignite Jacks, Mower & ATV Solutions, Cartwrights Lawyers, Sunny Coast Accountants, Palm Lake Resort, SPM Law, Cooroy Hotel, John

Get adventurous - try the rock climbling wall sponsored by Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland pack including a t-shirt and other goodies for all the volunteers. Don’t miss the Cooroy Fusion Fetival on Saturday, May 12. For more information on the festival head to www.cooroyfusion festival. com.au

The 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane doesn’t seem that long ago, but how times have changed. Greg Holmes brought us in this photo his wife took of the final tally board. You will notice that England’s final winning tally is 108 with us only one medal behind at 107. But when you add up England’s tally - Gold (38), Silver (38) and Bronze (33) the numbers don’t quite add up.

Muir’s Musings With Brigid Muir Isn’t it astonishing that episodes of The Simpson’s and Seinfeld, which many of my contemporaries laughed at thoroughly enjoyed a decade or so ago, now showcase what is deemed by today’s standards as unacceptable brands of humour? Today, humour that deals with gender, age and race is classed as offensively sexist, ageist, homophobic and racist. Drawing attention to prejudice and discrimination of any form is now considered taboo. Humour has a basis in reality and our society is far from perfect. Humans are and always will be fallible. It’s our weaknesses that are funny and humour can provide a forum where such issues are explored and discussed. Humour that is drawn from underlying realities so long as the main intention is not to denigrate others should be permitted. Important societal issues are a part of contemporary discourse. Through satire, parody, sarcasm and drawing paradoxes, humour provides a unique platform to explore issues in a manner that can draw attention to incongruities and inconsistencies within society. Humorous social commentary should have a message and be hilarious at the same time. People need to be more resilient. We can choose to feel offended or we can take a step back and see the issue being portrayed for what it is. In my opinion, we need to celebrate our freedom of speech and develop a thicker skin. Sorry (not sorry) if you’re offended.

Is adolescence societal recidivism? Nature, nurture or simply adults forgetting that they too were once young, immature, and apparently, self-entitled? “The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.” Socrates 469 BC (possibly spuriously attributed, but interesting nevertheless). “What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?” Plato 330 BC. “I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint.” Hesiod, 8th Century BC.

How’s your nest egg? Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank HAPPY Easter everyone! I hope you have plans to celebrate and relax with family and friends. Now that Easter is upon us again, how many of us are thinking about a different type of egg the nest egg? We all strive to save our hard earned money, which is getting more and more difficult with life’s ever increasing expenses. There will be many key times in our lives that will make us think about our budget. Like starting a new job, getting married, buying a home, saving for a holiday and many more. Any time is a great time to think about your budget and planning to grow that little nest egg. Many of us struggle with budgets; they’re too hard, too complicated and too restrictive. Most banks will offer help with budgets, whether it’s an online calculator that you key in your information, or a budget planner you record your own details. These need to be used to help track your income and expenses. For your income, take into account all of your wages, pensions, family payments, interest, dividends etc. That is usually the easy part, knowing what we earn. To accurately work out your expenses, use your bank account statements, credit card statements or your bills to find out what you spend your money on. Remember those other bills that may come in less frequently, such as rates or car registrations. Think about having other bills as monthly deductions, rather than an annual bill, such as insurances.

Once you have these completed, you can then work out your disposable income, this is the amount left over once you have allowed for all of your expenses to be paid. This can then be used to save regularly. Your bank can help you choose an account that’s right for you to save your extra money. Depending upon your situation, this may be in an offset account if you have a home loan or in a special savings account that will pay more interest. Remember to allow yourself some flexibility within your budget and be realistic. It’s no use having a great budget on paper if in reality it can’t work. If you would like to discuss your budget or a savings account, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Geoff Edwards is the senior manager of the Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank.

Wouldn’t it be nice! A RETIRED Cooroy man, whose private family syndicate won division one in Saturday Gold Lotto on the weekend, has explained he saw a big prize had landed in the region, but initially didn’t realise he was the “lucky bastard”. The Cooroy entry was one of six division one winning entries across Australia in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3825 on 17 March 2018. Each entry won the division one prize of $658 157.13. “Ho, ho, bloody ho!” the man exclaimed when a Golden Casket official confirmed his prize. “Me and my two kids go into it so we’ll share it. We’ve being going in together for about eight years. “I discovered the win yesterday. I was going for a ride on my motorbike, and I was packed and ready to go but it was raining. So I went into town to get the paper. As I was leaving the store I saw a sign out the front saying there had been another bloody first division winner. I thought some lucky bastard had won it and then I got home and

checked my ticket and I was the lucky bastard. “I celebrated last night by having a jam and cheese sanga and a cup of tea for dinner. “I said to my daughter ‘I hope it’s not like that Alanis Morissette song - I’ve won the lotto and died the next day’. That’d be my bloody luck wouldn’t it? “For the kids, this will pretty much pay out their mortgages. For me, I’ll be going down to the MotoGP and a few bike races in Victoria - something I’ve wanted to do for a while.” The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his winning 24-game QuickPick entry at Belvedere Newsagency, 4 Diamond Street, Cooroy. Belvedere Newsagency owner Carol Christensen said her outlet’s latest Gold Lotto win came just six months after the last one. “In October last year we sold a division one winning entry – it was our first one in 25 years. Now we’ve had another one. We just need a third one now!” she said.

Have a say on future infrastructure plan THE COMMUNITY has until April 18 to comment on Council’s draft Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) - part of proposed amendment to Noosa’s planning scheme. LGIPs provide councils the legislative mechanism for development to contribute to necessary trunk infrastructure over the next 10 to 15 years to support growth and future development. Trunk infrastructure includes major roads, pathways and bus stops, public parks, recreation and sports parks, community land, plus stormwater infrastructure. Council’s Development Assessment Manager Kerri Coyle said the draft LGIP would replace the existing Priority Infrastructure Plan, which is the current mechanism to levy development contributions currently in The Noosa Plan. “The LGIP will ensure Council, through its capi-

tal works program, is meeting the shire’s future infrastructure needs. It also allows Council to pass on the cost of some trunk infrastructure to developers,” Ms Coyle said. The draft LGIP is open for public feedback as part of a planning scheme amendment process. The State Government approved Council’s draft LGIP in March to go out for public feedback until Wednesday, April 18. After Council has reviewed submissions received, the draft LGIP will then go back to the State for approval. To view and comment online, visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au, or visit Council’s offices at Pelican Street, Tewantin to view a hard copy of the proposed amendments. Submissions can also be posted to Noosa Council, PO Box 141, Tewantin QLD 4565, or emailed to ic@noosa.qld.gov.au

Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* IT’S important you understand how retirement villages work and the type of costs you’re likely to come across. Today, around 184,000 Australians call a retirement village home. And, with the country’s senior population only set to increase, the number of people wanting to live in a retirement village is predicted to more than double by 2025. If it’s something you or a family member have been thinking about, a national survey revealed 93% of retirement village residents felt their overall happiness and life satisfaction remained the same, or had increased slightly to significantly since making the move from the family home. If you’d like to know more, we’ve pulled together some general information, as well as some of the costs you’re likely to come across. Remember, it’s also important you speak to a professional and are across any contract complexities before making any decisions. Retirement villages are generally complexes made up of individual residences. While they were traditionally designed to cater to the needs and lifestyles of peo-

ple aged 55 and over, the average age of new residents entering retirement villages is currently 75. Retirement villages are typically self-funded and do not receive government funding or subsidies. Many offer a range of health, leisure, and support services, and will often include medical facilities, as well as recreational facilities, such as community halls, bowling greens, libraries, and pools. According to a national census, the three main reasons residents said they wanted to move into a village were, they wanted to downsize while they could, their former home was becoming too big to manage, and they wanted freedom from house responsibilities to pursue other interests. Here are some additional insights from the survey: 68% of residents stated their confidence and feeling of security increased slightly to significantly after moving from the family home to their retirement village; 73% of residents stated that they were ‘very satisfied’ to ‘extremely satisfied’ that their expectations of their retirement village had been met; 75% said they were happy with

their decision to move into their retirement village and would make the same decision again. There are many different payment models - the ‘loan/licence’ (or licence to occupy) model a popular one among retirement villages. Under this model, here are some common costs and considerations you’re likely to come across - and note, the way figures are calculated will differ depending on the retirement village. Typical costs include an entry contribution, which may be refundable, minus an exit fee (commonly referred to as a deferred management fee), which will be payable on your departure; ongoing charges to cover things like maintenance and general services provided by the village, which may still be payable for a period of time after you’ve left. You also need to consider how capital gains may be retained by the operator and shared with you upon your exit; The potential for special levies to fund new services or refurbishments. The Australian Government has indicated that different fee structures make it difficult to compare the

affordability of different retirement villages, but here’s some general information on the three most common payment models to give you a bit of guidance: Loan/licence - This model is used by about 50% to 60% of retirement village operators. As mentioned above the main fees include an entry contribution (which may be refundable), an exit fee, and ongoing service costs. It’s important to note, your license agreement is not registered with the Land Titles Offices, and as such, offers lower security of tenure than a leasehold or freehold title. Leasehold - this model makes up about 30% of retirement village arrangements, offering residents a long-term lease for accommodation, in exchange for a lump-sum payment. Leases are registered with the relevant Land Titles Offices, which offers residents security of tenure, but which may also attract stamp duty. Upon departure, you’re entitled to a lease termination payment minus the exit fee (deferred management fee). And note, in some cases, you will not receive your payment until a new resident takes over the lease.

Freehold title - these models, where residents have 100% ownership of their retirement village unit, are not particularly common and make up less than 10% of retirement village arrangements. Why contract terms are so important: There is much to think about when assessing your living arrangements in retirement, particularly when it comes to signing contracts and making sure you understand the fine print. How different villages charge can vary significantly and some residents may be subject to different fee structures. On top of that, what you pay could also change over time to reflect occupancy demand, changes in ownership and fluctuations in property prices. Depending on the arrangement, there is the potential to benefit from having access to home equity or to defer a large portion of your costs until a later date. For these reasons, it’s very important to speak to your financial adviser and a legal professional before signing anything. If you seek further professional advice, please contact our office on 07 5447 7740.

The hookers journey Sunny Coast Accountants are proud to announce we have opened an office in the lovely community of Cooroy! Jody & Sarah welcome long time local Sandy Duncan and our admin extraordinaire Jodie Morris to our fantastic team! Pop in to see us in Wimmers Lane.

THE Hookers began their journey some 6 years ago. Originally the girls met and gathered at a place in Tewantin known as ‘Sheepthrills’ which was a privately owned premises committed to yarn and the pursuit of crotchet - although if knitting was your thing, that was okay too. After approx 3 years and the development of great friendships Sheepthrills closed shop. The women then relocated to the rear of Cooroy Drapery, where a smaller group had been having weekly crotchet/craft sessions. The two groups amalgamated, forming ‘The Hookers of Cooroy’, and their weekly Friday get togethers began lasting for another 2 years, for which we were very grateful. At the end of

2017 we were asked to find another location for our meetings, so The Hookers relocated to the CWA hall where we now meet every Thursday morning from 9:00ish until 12:00pm. No matter what your skill set, one of the Hookers can either teach or help new comers progress The ladies individually create wonderful blankets, garments and a variety of different crotchet items. As a collective we also make charity items (beanies, socks and blankets) for the Adem Crosby Centre at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital - in the past 12 months we have donated over 30 blankets, 25 beanies and approximately 30 pairs of socks.

COOROY RAG Happy 100th Birthday

Probus Club members gathered to wish one of their favourite members a Happy 100th Birthday. Congratulations Jimmy ... and no you cannot turn it upside down and start at 001 again!

We humbly wrote this poem, In honour of your prose, For all the memories you’ve shared with us, And this is how it goes …. We know you don’t think it’s special, That you’ve reached 100 years today, But we are here to give to you, A big Hip Hip Hooray! Like everyone who’s known you, You’ve added to our life, We love your tales of days gone by, Full of laughter, love and strife. Your spirit of adventure, Is an inspiration to us all, And your love of our great country, Has made us all stand tall. We’re so happy that we met you, You have a heart of gold, You buy those green bananas Jim, You’re so very far from old! Lots of Love, Brenda, Kerry and Janet (The Ragettes)

Congratulations and best wishes to Mrs Grace Smerdon who celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family on March 20. Grace is still in good health and enjoys gardening at her home in Noosaville. Grace’s husband Jack was the manager of the Cooroy Butter Factory after WWII until its closure in 1979. Grace has 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

pomona Pomona’s pedestrian rail crossing to stay

COOROY RAG

AFTER listening to community feedback, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said Queensland Rail (QR) will retain the current pedestrian crossing at Pomona station. Minister Bailey said he wanted to assure locals the crossing would remain, but that it would require a number of safety upgrades. “QR put a number of options forward, one of which was to close the crossing, but after public consultations the message was loud and clear that people wanted the crossing to stay,” Mr Bailey said. Brian O’Connor, a spokesperson for the Don’t Divide Pomona group, said the thing that drove the campaign to retain the cross-town path was the realisation by residents that the alternative crossing point Queensland Rail wanted people to use – the intersection of Reserve and Factory streets — was inherently more dangerous.

“Contrast that with the fact that there had been no death or major incident at the existing crossing point for more than 100 years,” said Mr O’Connor. “The closure of the path would have made Pomona more a town divided. With the path retained and the prospect of a new railway station going in, the centre of town will be more functional and pleasant. “A better cross-town path will make it easier for Pomonans to get about, but also visitors to The Majestic, the museum and the art gallery, as well as horse riders and hikers on the Noosa Trail Network. “All of this convenience and vibrancy would have been lost had the path closed because it would have driven more people into their cars for relatively short journeys about a walkable town. “Now we know a cross-town path will be retained, there are opportunities to see how the

Bridge over troubled waters AFTER over 50 years the existing one-lane bridge on Pomona-Kin Kin, ”6 Mile Creek, Crossing 7" remains a dangerous disgrace to all road users. The deck and other parts of the structure have been regularly rebuilt at great expense. Over the past 20 years both LNP and Labor have told local people this bridge will be upgraded, only to be forgotten once any election is over. Main Roads now requires that this bridge be “inspected” by an “engineer” and reopened only after water levels have fallen 2.3 meters below the bridge surface! Rains on October and January this summer resulted in this bridge being closed for over 30 hours each time even though the water level dropped and stayed below the bridge deck level within few hours after it peaked. If the 6 Mile Bridge is so dangerous that it now needs inspection after flooding, how is it that large 30+ tonne double carrier gravel trucks are permitted to use this bridge as often as every 10 minutes apart every work day all year round? And what happens if the bridge is one day declared “unsafe”? Robert Herron

rest of the walkways through Pomona can better connect to it. We will be asking Queensland Rail to reveal their plans for the station and path as soon as possible. “We would never have got to this point without the resilience and determination of the people of Pomona, including the 1700 people who signed the petition, the 148 people who attended the formal consultation day and the 80 or so people who participated in the protest march, not to mention the many private letters that went to QR and the Transport Minister. “In the end, Queensland Rail said they had been overwhelmed by the 100 per cent opposition to the closure proposal. It just goes to show what people power can do – so well done all,” Mr O’Connor said. Queensland Rail will keep the Pomona community informed regarding the progress and timing of the design investigations.

It’s a fascinating one-hour documentary uncovering a golden decade of surfing, starting in 1956, when surfing was transformed into a sport and culture with its very own music, movies, fashion and heroes. “Dangerous Song - Blue” uses the stunning underwater cinematography by renowned and celebrated underwater cinematographer David Hannan with a

London has been hit by airstrikes, and the Pevensie children have been sent to the country for safety. Our opening number evokes the BBC Jazz Hour, and is one big jam session. The audience will love it,” Heather adds. “We are excited to add to Little Seed’s growing legacy of quality produc-

The first annual Art of the Body exhibition opens next month to reveal Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre’s curatorial aesthetic for 2018. Forty works chosen from around 50 Sunshine Coast and Brisbane artists feature. From Sculpture and singleline work to oil paintings and interactive pieces, Art of the Body shares dates with the nationally acclaimed Australian Body Art Festival, also held in Cooroy. BFAC co-ordinator Alicia Sharples said this exhibition continues the conversation started by the Festival. It’s also her first content selection for the art space, since taking on the role late 2017. “I hope this show invites discussion from those that come and see it, about what constitutes ‘Art of the Body’ and also encourages a flow on from our space into the Australian Body Art Festival, and vice-versa. “It was organised before my time here at the Butter Factory but I’ve had the great joy of selecting which works fill it. ‘Art of the Body’ opens officially with exhibitions ‘Expressions’ by Marcus Beach Artists’ group and ‘hARTland’ by Nicole Harper 6pm, Friday April 06. All welcome, cash bar available. The three exhibitions show until Tuesday, May 8 at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy.

The 13-member orchestra has worked tirelessly over the past few months to create a score that “adds to the mood, works with the actors and enhances the story,” Heather adds. Little Seed also hosted workshops with Andy Kidd, a professional musician who composes for silent films, and Jo Ramsey, a violinist and acclaimed music teacher. Both Andy and Jo helped tighten the score and will be part of the orchestra, which Heather explains “adds another exciting dimension and level of professionalism to our production”.

Ridgewood Photo Fair THE Ridgewood Hall is very pleased to announce that the world famous photographer, Colin Beard, will be the judge for the upcoming Ridgewood Photo Fair to be held in May. At 26, Colin Beard gave up his desk job as an engineer to follow the sixties rock ‘n’ roll revolution from behind the lens of a camera. In 1966 with two other mates, Colin launched Australia’s first iconic pop music magazine called Go-Set and became its founding photographer. What ensued were three extraordinary years travelling the world photographing all the major rock ‘n’ rollers of the time including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Cher, The Who, Cat Stevens, The Kinks and many more. From photographing rock n roll stars, he became one of Australia’s most accomplished fashion photographers, producing numerous covers and fashion spreads for Vogue, Cleo, Dolly magazines. His professional work has won several awards including a Gold Medal at the New York “One Show”. He began teaching in 1977 as a founding member of The Sydney College of the Arts, and later joined the staff of the Design Faculty of The University of Technology, Sydney, introducing many new courses in Photography. At UTS he was in-

strumental in the development of the digital photography studios and in the conversion of the design programme to digital technology. Alongside his academic activities, Colin is a highly regarded Photojournalist, and was the first photographer to be commissioned for Australian Geographic magazine. He was selected as one of the 100 international photographers representing Australia in the book, “A Day in the Life of Australia”. Colin’s photographs have been exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions in all the major cities of Australia, and in Beijing, Italy and London. Colin has semi-retired to the beautiful Mary Valley and conducts photography workshops on the Sunshine Coast. The Ridgewood Photo Fair receives 200 photographic entries annually, with the 2017 overall winner being 11 year old Lilly Kennedy from Noosa Christian College. This year, entries will be accepted from 7th May to 14th May, with the results and prize presentations being announced at an exhibitors function on Friday evening 18th May. health

COOROY RAG

Are you inflamed? EVERYONE has experienced the remarkable phenomenon of acute inflammation - a sprained ankle, splinter, or cut – and as a result have witnessed the affected area turn red, puffy and hot as your immune system rushes to your aid to assess the injury and fight any pathogen that might have entered your body. A normal, healthy inflammatory response should flare up and die down again a short time later, as the healing process resolves the inflammation and the injury heals. Pain and inflammation should not be chronic, it should go away - but what if it doesn’t? Nutritionist and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, explains more. Imagine if you kept injuring yourself in the same location repetitively. The result

would be unresolved ongoing inflammation. However, not all inflammation has a visible injury. For example, if there is inflammation in your gut, the only symptom may be some niggling gut issues, yet you cannot ‘see’ the problem. Nevertheless, there may be an inflammatory snowball effect occurring inside. Unresolved inflammation, visible or not, becomes more problematic the longer it keeps interfering with the normal workings of your body, and has been linked to many types of chronic disease such as arthritis and type 2 diabetes. Nobody wants to be in pain, and for optimal health it is important to stop abnormal inflammation in its tracks. Pharmaceutical antiinflammatories are commonly used to help relieve persistent pain, however some medications may be accompanied by unwanted side effects if used ongoing. Fortunately, there are natural anti-inflammatory and pain relief solutions that can be individualised for your situation, whether you need acute care or more ongoing support. Herbal medicines can offer safe and effective anti-inflammatory support for a range of body systems, including: the Digestive Tract (calendula, chamomile and meadowsweet); Muscles and Joints (boswellia, turmeric and devil’s claw); Allergies (sarsaparilla and baical skullcap) and the Urinary Tract (crataeva and golden rod).

It is also important to learn which diet and lifestyle behaviours may be adding to inflammation in your body, such as: 1) smoking; 2) being an unhealthy weight; 3) eating refined/processed carbohydrates (e.g. white bread, pasta, white rice, cereals); 4) consuming ’trans’ fats (e.g. fried or fast foods, packaged baked goods, vegetable fats used in some margarines); 5) being sleep deprived; 6) regularly consuming alcohol, excess caffeine sugar and/ or salt; 7) ongoing digestive issues that upset the balance of ‘good’ bacteria (e.g. stomach pain, bloating, diarrhoea) and/or; 8) experiencing ongoing psychological stress (e.g. unhappy employment situation, social isolation, caring for a loved one with a serious disease). Modifying any or all of these is an important step in a holistic approach to reducing inflammation that may be contributing to your pain or illness. Don’t let visible or invisible inflammation be a perpetuating problem! Take action to address inflammation - it can not only improve your quality of life now, but reduce your risk of chronic disease in future. Jodie Persovic is the Principal Dietitian and founder of Nutrition Means. She is also a Naturopath and specialises in a wide range of health conditions. Life is in Balance in Cooroy LOCALS are already taking advantage of the new yoga studio in Cooroy. A number of them have already joined the yoga classes at Life in Balance after it opened on Wednesday 14th March in Kauri Street. Over 70 people attended the official opening at the end of our first week open, with the majority of them also from Cooroy and surrounding areas. It was an enjoyable night with locals Adhi Bail and Glen Bruce playing live music. All in all, it was a very positive start, according to Heidi De Wald Veraa, who added that her Ayurvedic medicine clinic was also booked out for this coming week. “I think the locals are embracing the new opportunity the Ayurvedic clinic and yoga studio are providing, with many locals commenting that this is a place Cooroy needed,” Heidi added. “We’ve had lots of inquiries and interest in the Diploma of Ayurveda as well.” Ayurveda is India’s traditional system of healing that helps to restore and maintain healthy balance in the body. Balance will help prevent disease, address anxiety, fatigue, depression, bad digestion, skin disease, high blood-pressure, promote natural weight loss and allows the body to heal itself naturally from re-occurring pain and illness. In just two years, the Australian complimentary medicines industry has nearly doubled! A clear sign that the Australian people are wanting to take their health in their own hands to live longer and healthier lives. The Diploma of Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation starts in May and enrolments are already coming in. Students will learn the philosophy of Ayurveda, how to detect illness from a very early stage, how to make medicines and how to perform at least nine classical therapies including the full-body Abhyanga massage. They will also need to complete 200 hours of clinic time before they can qualify for the nationally recognised Diploma and ready for work as soon as they finish. The current Diploma student have just completed their final exams, after 18 months of study and have intentions of practising in various parts of Noosa and

the Sunshine Coast, including Cooroy. Our move to Cooroy looks like being a real success, said Heidi, and it is so nice to only have to come down from home at Black Mountain to go to work in our local community. Heidi, and her husband Joe, were forced to close their previous premises due to asbestos fibres in their old Noosaville premises. Our students, friends and clients rallied to support us and 25 of them helped us to paint the interior of the new clinic. It has been a very humbling experience, Heidi added. The new premises in Kauri Street, are right next door to the Copperhead Restaurant. Ayurvedic medicine has been practised in India for thousands of years. It is very much about living a healthy lifestyle, Heidi said. We use natural organic herbs and oils to help treat any conditions that might be presenting in people. Don’t suffer unnecessarily with eczema ECZEMA, also called dermatitis, is a group of conditions in which the skin is dry, itchy and scaly (note: not “hot,” which is usually more a sign of infection). In severe outbreaks the skin may become raw, red and bleeding. It affects up to 30% of pre-school aged children (5 years or under), and 1 in 6 school-aged children in Australia Eczema is thought to be triggered by different factors for different people. Some common examples include: • Irritants (e.g. soaps and shampoos) • Allergens (e.g. dust mites and pet hair) • Microbes (e.g. some types of virus and bacteria) • Hot/cold temperatures (and humidity

COOROY RAG changes that accompany these) • Foods (e.g. dairy products and eggs) • Stress • Hormones Some of us live with this skin condition every day of our lives. The team at your LiveLife Pharmacy are here to help you and your family to look after your skin. Some lifestyle hints that we may recommend include: • Avoid excessively hot water when showering and bathing • When towelling dry, pat rather than rub your skin • Apply cool, wet compresses – the affected area may even be covered with bandages and dressings to help protect the skin and prevent scratching • Avoid dry conditions (e.g. air conditioners and heaters) • Avoid soap based products - Use a soap-free cleanser or bath oil. Also try to avoid colours and fragrances in these cleansers. • Apply a thick moisturiser to the skin once or twice daily (best applied immediately after a shower/bath to retain the moisture in the skin). Consider increasing this frequency of application

if living/working in a dry/air-conditioned/heated environment. • Wear clothes made of natural fibres where possible, so the skin may breathe • Avoid any known triggers and irritants • Wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent • Avoid chlorinated pools if possible. Otherwise, ensure you shower then moisturise your skin well when you get out. • When using a new cosmetic, try testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such as your forearm. That way if you experience a reaction, you can avoid using it again. • Try to avoid scratching the skin, as this can lead to infection or scarring – keep your fingernails short! • Choose mild/unscented laundry detergent. Remember to consult one of our pharmacists should your symptoms persist. We have many more products such as steroid creams and antihistamines, and even complementary therapies which may be beneficial for your skin. Don’t suffer unnecessarily with skin conditions. RAINE & Horne Noosa Hinterland owners, Michael & Kristin Robinson, are extremely proud of the team’s results at the recent 2018 annual awards for Raine & Horne Queensland held on the Gold Coast. Michael & Kristin, along with 8 other staff members and their partners, attended the event and took the opportunity to glam up for the evening. Michael & Wayne Colley found themselves as the thorns amongst

the roses (which I am sure they loved) and we all managed to share a drink with Steven Bradbury, who was our very amusing MC for the evening. After a positive and productive year here in the hinterland with their two offices in Cooroy and Pomona, Michael & Kristin were again thrilled with the achievements of their office in the ever growing Raine & Horne brand. Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland were awarded 9th place in the Top Office for Dollar Value. The awards recognise outstanding achievement in property management, residential, commercial and rural property sales. It was beautiful night at the Star Casino on the Gold Goast, which saw a

Raine & Horne staff and family attended from throughout Queensland and interstate to celebrate the success of the industry’s leading stars, to network with colleagues, dance the night away and to enjoy a wonderful evening. “We’re excited about the club’s new look and know all our teams will proudly represent the hinterland each round,” Tony said. “We all know that sponsorship plays a key role in supporting a team and we have many local businesses and individuals who generously give their time and talents to support the Wombats - from our U6’s, right through to our men’s and women’s senior teams. “One of those long-time supporters is the Bendigo Bank and their Community Bank branches in Cooroy and Pomona. They continue to be a great fit for our club and we’re proud to support the community banks that in turn support us,” Tony added. He shared the club had worked hard to field some strong teams at all age levels in 2018 however said the most rewarding aspect of the hard working committee’s efforts was to see so many teams out there enjoying their football on so many

levels. “It’s fantastic and is a credit to all the volunteers who put so much into this great club,” Tony said. Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said Bendigo Bank is delighted to be supporting the club for another season. “We’ve been proud sponsors for many years from club strips like these to the Cooroora United app that anyone can download for free. The club is filled with so many great locals and you can feel the family atmosphere every time you come here. On behalf of all the sponsors, we wish all the teams a great season ahead. Go the Wombats!” Geoff said. Anyone still looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au.

Dragons breathe more fire! DUE to the fact that that the fields at Eumundi were unplayable after the recent downpours, the three teams from the Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club travelled to Noosa on March 17 for some exciting games. The U9s played two minigames, firstly against University and then against Maroochydore. In the first match the Eumundi boys were a little tentative in defence, but all this changed in the second game against Maroochydore with solid defence and excellent support play ensuring the Dragons putting on a much better display of their Rugby skills, for the enjoyment of their cheering fans. Will Campbell-Jones, Max Johnson-Thompson and Jett Herbert were very effective in attack with Craig Yaxley showing early glimpses of what he is capable of as a powerful forward. Both the U6s and U7s continued to display that they will be future champions of the game. Their skill levels have come ahead in leaps and bounds, as is a very evident team spirit in both teams. In the U6s Tristan Youd made some fantastic runs down the sideline while Isla Youd, Nya JohnsonThompson , Nixon Griggs,

Jack Cooper , Henry Dean and CJ Sands contributed to ensure that their Maroochydore opposition were left in no doubt that the Dragons are a force to be reckoned with. The U7s also played a Maroochydore team with Brooklyn Griggs, George Hillhouse, Billy Gunton and Zac Eaton showing good combinations in attack and defence. Brody Ruster and Finn Rivers were both tire-

less players who are really starting to develop as integral members of the team. Special thanks to Jack from the U6s who helped out to ensure that we had a complete team on the paddock. That’s the Dragons Spirit. The player of the morning for the U7s was Billy who was presented with the coaches “Eveready Award” for never seeming to run out of energy!
