Locals get the low down on council candidates

THE Cooroy State School Hall was packed to capacity on February 15 at the ‘Meet the Candidates night’ hosted by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Cooroy Area Residents Association. Council Candidates were given three minutes to speak about themselves and their policies before taking questions from the floor. The Cooroy Rag gave candidates the opportunity to tell us their vision for the hinterland. (See answers on Pages 2-4). The election will be held on March 19.

COOROY RAG

Meet our Council Candidates NOOSA is a beautiful place to live, play and visit and everyone wants to keep it that way. At the ‘Meet the Candidates night’ held recently at the Cooroy Primary School, it would seem that most of our impending representatives are on the same page when it comes to Noosa. Key words like sustainability, biosphere, innovation and considered development ran thick and fast. But what does this mean for Cooroy and the hinterland. The Cooroy Rag asked our Mayoral and Council Candidates to give us their ideas on the future of the hinterland. The following is a brief overview of their answers. (Note: More to come in our next issue).

ONE of my policies back in 2012 was the sealing of Dr Pages Road to complete a tourism loop drive. Plans for that work were drawn up under the Sunshine Coast Council and improved on by the new Noosa Council. As I said back in 2012, this will pro-

Whilst on the big Council, it was my motion that ensured the new Noosa Council would be the primary assessment manager on the massive Noosa on Weyba development, even though many of the southern councillors wanted to commandeer that role. I also used my discretional allowance to fund a wide range of projects across the hinterland. These included footpaths at both Kauri Street Cooroy and in front of the Kin Kin Store, new netball courts at Cooran, skatepark extensions at

Pomona and Kin Kin, new signage for the Lower Mill Precinct and Butter Factory Arts Centre, and a footbridge across the creek on Mary River Rd so that pedestrians were no longer forced to walk on the roadway. But more significant was the time I put in, on both Councils, to flood mitigation efforts in Pomona, Cooroy and Tewantin’s Daintree Estate. I have demonstrated that I am prepared to fight for what I believe is right, and my record stands as proof. For example, I fought to

protect resident amenity in matters such as the proposed Lukes Rd function centre and also the Top Forestry Rd intensive chicken farm. I have done what I could to ensure best practice at the Kin Kin Quarry, and championed a wide range of issues from koala conservation to more conscionable Council investments. My aim is to see the Noosa Shire retain its essential differences, because those differences are key to its competitive edge and thus economic foundations.

Ray Kelly (Mayoral candidate)

TO keep the Rural life style feel, the infrastructure must be in place like free flowing intersections, roads that are flood free a high percentage of the time, roads that are also free flowing. Carparks in our business centres need to be

improved not only more spaces, but better parking configurations. The business and Industry land that has been allocated is enough to develop over the next two decades with fill ins at the existing commercial centres. The railway is the most important asset we have running through our hinterland towns. Once a regular service is operating I believe we can then increase our town populations at a stainable rate without effecting our lifestyle.

This has to be a perfect balance. Too much too quick will spoil everything most of us has cherished over time living in this area. My vision for the rural parts of our shire is one of cooperation, with all land owners sharing the rural industries. Some of our areas are intensified farming, other areas lifestyle farming and that’s where some concerns lie in so far as making sure that older farms have existing use rights provided they comply with stainable farm practises.

HAVING raised my family in Kin Kin for the last 17 years and been involved in a range of community organisations across the Shire, I understand the character of our Hinterland

towns must never be compromised by excessive development. That said, as a parent and small business operator, I appreciate the need to diversify our economy and create future jobs for our children. The Hinterland now has the opportunity to market a new tourism experience due to the upgrading of Dr Pages Rd to a fully sealed “Noosa Country Drive” network, benefitting Kin Kin, Pomona, Cooran and Cooroy. This major infra-

structure project will enhance existing enterprises and with wireless NBN and a new mobile phone tower in the area, I see benefits for a variety of industries. Everything from ecotourism, information technology, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and home based businesses, instantly become more viable with efficient infrastructure. I look forward to the upcoming review of the Noosa Plan to better un-

vide significant benefit to the hinterland economy. To that end, I also persuaded Tourism Noosa to include a hinterland representative on their marketing committee. Currently that is Pomona’s Stephen Hilditch. I was involved in the de-amalgamation movement from the very start. I was on the Friends of Noosa committee before we were amalgamated, and on the Noosa Independent Alliance Committee just before being elected to the Sunshine Coast Council on a deamalgamation platform.

We need some form of disclosures method to warn future purchasers of land in these areas that there is intensified farming in operation. I envisage that cooperative farming take place with many farms being operated under one controlling body with lease back arrangements in place to farm and value add their products that the farms produce. For example, one central processing plant and packing shed in our shire. Maybe we can have that outside our shire

within a short distance from our shire boundary. Education hubs can be set up in our larger towns and maybe in our small towns with the event of better and faster internet connections, for example our halls and community places that we control in our Hinterland. Accommodation such Motel, B&B, Backpackers, camping, R V, Caravans are to be encouraged throughout our beautiful hinterland to complement the tracks and trails network running through our hinterland.

derstand where the community sees room for improvement in regional planning. I believe Cooroy in particular must be a major focus of the next Council. Pressure must be put on the State Government to fix the Myall St intersection once and for all. This of course will complement the Bruce Highway upgrade and make Cooroy a welcoming entrance to the Shire. Better public transport for the Hinterland is another

issue for the next Council to consider. I’m also keen to see Council help the Cooroy Memorial Hall to reopen as soon as possible and have it bustling again with functions and community events. If elected as Noosa’s first Greens candidate, I will work for the community to ensure the Noosa Plan continues to protect our environment and lifestyle while encouraging a sustainable economy.

COOROY RAG Elaine Williams

MY vision for our hinterland is to develop a sustainable haven for residents and a must see destination for eco tourists. My key Policy is to build a sustainable future for Noosa which comprises the three essential policies of “Rates”, “Roads” and “Rubbish”. These are the three day to day fundamental issues that our Council must keep in focus. It is absolutely essential that our cost of living is as affordable as possible for everyone in the Noosa Shire and this is heavily influenced by our Rates. Keeping our rates low, help to keep rents affordable, family costs down, small business costs down and makes Noosa attrac-

tive to tourists, farmers, entrepreneurs and investors among other benefits. I would ensure a fair share of the money we all pay in rates is spent in the hinterland. Improve our Roads and Transport issues with a long term view. It is particularly important that the decisions we make now will serve us well for the next 20. I will work with my colleagues to correct the trouble spots such as the Myall Street and Diamond Street intersections. I will ensure the single lane bridge over the 6 mile near Cooran and upgrade underway to Dr Pages Road are completed to a cost effective and high standard. I will work with my Council Team to draft the transport strategy and to develop a useful public transport system for the hinterland and whole shire. I would like to investigate smaller, greener, quieter public transport options (eg electric minibus shuttles) for the whole shire with particular focus on the hinterland area as a starting point. I want to address the seemingly small issues in

the hinterland that have a big impact on the day to day lives of our residents. An example is the designated motorcycles parking in Pomona. Another example is the poor drainage where Coveys Road meets the Cooroy Noosa Road. During heavy rain, water sheets across the road here and creates a dangerous situation that has caused vehicles to aquaplane. Yet another example is the pedestrian crossing in Maple St. The open space on the corner of Middle Creek Rd and the old Bruce Highway at Federal should be improved for both community and tourist use. An RV stop with provision for amenities and commercial enterprise or green space for play and picnics would be a great use of the space. Aim for Zero Landfill, 100 % Recycling, Zero Pollution. The ultimate goal would be to minimise external inputs, find a reuse for every single waste product, minimise the waste generated in the first place and employ a raft of ‘no pollution’ initiatives. I will help the Team to encourage and

develop environmentally sustainable and innovative local inputs including clean energy and agriculture. I will support sound environmental policies, practices and decision making. I will work to identify and find solutions to poor practices. We already have two great initiatives in place that are perfect foundations to build jobs and business opportunities on, the Noosa Trail Network and the Noosa Country Drive. They offer amazing opportunities for boutique accommodation, guided tours, food trails and outdoor activities. The underlying concepts of “Woodfordia” could be applied to the hinterland with an ongoing yearly schedule of events with a Noosa hinterland flavour. We already have many excellent events going on in the hinterland such as Christmas in Cooroy, Fusion Festival, Woodworkers Expo and various markets and music events. We also have the Noosa International Film Festival coming up this year. These events could be integrated

into ongoing hinterland festival and include concerts, agricultural, art, craft, writing, cooking, children’s events and music workshops that incorporate each village in the hinterland. Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona are all ideal for many of these activities due to their natural assets and communities. Some may remember the “Farming the Future” Expo held at the Cooroy Sports Complex quite a few years back. I think it is time to revisit this concept but tie it in with more contemporary issues such as renewables, emerging technologies, low food miles produce as well as on farm workshops, tours and our other events to build our own Sustainable Living Festival. I would also like to build opportunities based on our unique wildlife. One idea would be to offer organised access to our designated koala habitats at a fee to tourists to help fund further koala food tree planting and the purchase of additional habitat.

hinterland to new tourism products, and the new world of digital enterprise and e-commerce across the rural area, and we can use this to foster homegrown start-ups and attract people with capital to our hinterland. But not all our livelihoods have to come from new enterprises. I believes creating the conditions for existing enterprises to adapt to new conditions is also important. When I was an economic development manager I gave some assistance to enable the conversion of the brickworks into the new Wimmers factory, which I believe is an excellent example of reusing old assets to create new jobs. The huge solar array on

Pages Furniture in Pomona is another indication of how a traditional manufacturer can innovate to stay viable. Keeping jobs in town is just as important as creating new ones. I have extensive qualifications in geography, economics & planning and 25 years in local and state government. I believe with the Noosa Plan having to be renewed in the coming months that we need to elect people to Council who have vision and are committed to landscape protection. I have those attributes, but I can also bring the knowledge and know-how to plan for another decade of innovation to foster our lifestyles and our livelihoods.

Brian Stockwell

AS a councillor, having a strategic vision is important, but having the ability to form active and effective Council and community partnerships around these ideas is what really counts. My career has spanned local and state government, became a rural Councillor for Noosa in 1988 and the Cooroy Rag reported back then that I had a vision based on “keeping the country in Cooroy”.

Cooroy was one of the fastest growing census districts in Australia at the time. My campaign targets included establishing guidelines for the retention of the Queensland architecture in town, creating a “network of bridle and bushwalking trails”, providing Council support for agriculture and facilitating growth in ‘treeways not freeways’. I’m proud to say that in that term of Council I was the driver for the initiation of the current Noosa Trail Network, the formation of Noosa Landcare and the early start of streetscaping in Cooroy. Thanks to the hard work of many over the years all these initiatives have not only stood the test of time, but have

developed into some of the most important social, economic and natural assets of rural Noosa. Noosa Landcare, for example, has just won grants to see another 400 000 trees planted in the Shire, has trained numerous young people and is the second biggest employer in Pomona. I believe it is time for a quiet revolution in the Noosa hinterland, a revolution that sees more local free range food produced and more jobs generated. I see growth based on our natural assets and the potential of people who live and work here; not on excessive population growth. The opening of the Noosa Country Drive and the arrival of the NBN this year opens up the

COOROY RAG Frank Pardon

Many of my campaign platforms directly address hinterland issues. My core platform campaigns reach across the shire and are to keep rates low through a strong financial plan, support small business through Noosa’s Economic Plan, uphold the

values of the Noosa Planning Scheme, protect the integrity of the Biosphere, ban net fishing on the North Shore, keep a focus on roads and transport, and develop an all abilities playground for the hinterland. One of my big visions for the Noosa Hinterland is to develop a nature-based, All Abilities Playground that includes a water play component. I have obtained $50,000 in the current budget for a feasibility study to identify the best location which is in progress now. This will be a fantastic project for the hinterland with playground equipment and water play area, BBQ and toilet facili-

ties and car parking. It will be a great asset for our families across the shire and will also bring people into the region as these facilities are in quite high demand. Roads are in my current portfolio and we have undertaken a lot of work but that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. There is still a way to go, particularly in the hinterland, and It is an area that we need to keep focussing on. We have to upgrade many of our roads as they are not up to standard in my books and if these issues aren’t addressed they compound so we have to make it a priority. It goes further than just

upgrading roads, we also need to pedestrianise the streets. We have to improve our footpaths so that they all join up to enable people to get from one place to another. Issues like the overhead foot bridge in Cooroy need to be addressed too and while that decision really sits in the State Government’s court we’ve been doing a lot of work to get to a solution and it is getting closer to becoming a reality.” I’ve lived in the shire for over 30 years and outside of my councillor role have a link to the hinterland and small business through banana farming and from

partnering with Shane Stanley to develop the Noosa Farmer’s markets. I’ve always been a strong supporter of the growers and producers in our region which is why I’m so passionate and proud of the Noosa Farmer’s Markets. I’d love to see a farmer’s market in the hinterland with the addition of artisans to provide an avenue for artists and growers to market their goods. We have so much to be proud of in this region and so many small businesses across a multitude of industries. We need to support them which I believe we can also do through the new Noosa Economic Plan.

minimisation and resource recovery by Council. I want to look at the feasibility for improved recycling facilities in our hinterland towns which could provide job opportunities and reduce waste in the region. Council has begun discussions with Main Roads regarding upgrades to the Myall and Elm St intersection, but I believe we also need to be talking about a second rail crossing at the Northern end of Cooroy, especially with ongoing development in the Lake McDonald Dr area. More houses will result in more traffic and greater congestion to come. We need to be

planning solutions now.” We also need to be discussing upgrading the single lane bridges between Pomona and Kin Kin, especially now that Dr Pages road is being sealed and open up the Hinterland to greater Tourism opportunities.” I have received a number of requests for additional public toilet facilities in Cooroy and believe that, with the current Planning Scheme review to commence later this year, it will be an ideal opportunity to discuss all of our precinct master plans and for the community to advise what improvements are needed in each of our towns.

farms and all backed the new free monthly Cooroy Originals Concerts and RV Park. The council’s revised economic plan included a focus on understanding the hinterland’s potential for food production and its biggest ticket item was the $5million upgrade of Dr Pages Road. The successful futures for the Cooroy Hall, Cooroy Butter Factory

and Shire Museum at Pomona are still on the agenda as are pathway upgrades, a water or play park for the hinterland and traffic issues. You only have to look from the top of some of our taller mountain peaks where you can virtually see Noosa’s four corners to realize that it’s a very small place after all. Too small for ‘us and them’. There’s only ‘us’.

Joe Jurisevic

I WILL be standing for re-election on March 19th. I am local Clean Up Noosa advocate my campaign will not generate waste as I aim to be ‘Recycled’ for the first full term of the deamalgamated Noosa Council. I am proud of my track

record as a community representative and believe I have been part of a Council that has delivered for the community since de-amalgamation in 2014 after rebuilding from the ground up. This first term has seen the return of a Noosa Council in a sound financial position, maintenance and service levels increased to instill a sense pride in our community, and getting on with the detailed work of reviewing and updating almost every Council policy, procedure, principle and plan. It has been a busy 2 years, but here is still a lot of work to do, and we need to

have continuity of our elected representatives to maintain the focus.” In 2013, I was committed to the return of the popular Kerbside Clean Up and former Noosa Council service levels, the use of local contractors and providers for Council services to support local business, reducing Unity Water bills for Community organisations, which has been completed, and a review of public transport services which will be undertaken within the current Transport Strategy review. For the next term I want to focus on opportunities for enhancing waste

Questionable question time It has always puzzled me, in my funny way, How the politicians, in this day and age, get away, With what is laughingly called “Question Time” this farce, That is held each day, as brazenly, as bold as brass. A Minister in advance will provide a member of his side, With a “Dorothy Dix” question, quite dignified, This allows them both to sing each other’s praises, A time for total boredom, as everyone’s eyesight glazes, Next it’s the Opposition’s turn, and they raise something tickly, Which turns out to be true and very, very prickly. So they have a censure motion, which entails speeches, bells, and a division, More speeches, political name calling, and derision. Which may lead, incredibly, to more indecision, Requiring, of course, another division!! The bells are rung, it’s difficult to understand, There could even be another trip to Disneyland!!

New Guide to Cooroy hits the streets directory. The guide is called Kurui which is a reference to the Gubbi Gubbi name for possum from which the name Cooroy was derived. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce produced the book to encourage shopping locally and to highlight the diverse array of attractions that Cooroy has to offer. “We produced this booklet to showcase how wonderful Cooroy is, we’ve pretty much got everything you could possible want. This is the second edition of the Kurui in this format and it superseded the old Cooroy Pocket Guide that was originally printed in 2009. We get frequent requests for information centres to restock their supplies as they are very popular,” said Danielle Taylor, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. Five thousand copies of the guide have been printed and are already available in various shops in Cooroy and distributed across the coast to Tourism Noosa information centres as well as brochure stands in hotels and shopping centres.

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society THIS time of the year is flowering time at our place for many of the Spotted Cattleyas. This type of orchid originates from South America and has been hybdrised to grow just about anywhere. Our climate on the Sunshine Coast is ideal for their cultivation; they come in a variety of colours. Cattleyas are easy to grow in pots or tied to a suitable host tree. I have them growing in the garden on a variety of trees. Only problem on the trees is every chewing insect seems to like them as much as we do. At the last meeting the club presented a donation to Meals on Wheels. The club is generous in supporting the local community as much as it can. Profits from the shows help in this endeavour. There should be a number of Cattleya Orchids along with many other genera on display at The Noosa Clubs’ Show held in Cooroy on the 6th & 7th May, This show is the Mother’s Day weekend so come and see and smell the flowers and buy one to take home. Admission is $2 to cover costs. The Noosa District Orchid &Foliage Society meets at the Tinbeerwah hall on the first Saturday of each month beginning at 1pm. Visitors are very welcome and if you have a problem plant bring it along. Please note there will no meeting at the hall on Saturday 5th March as the club is going on a bus trip to Brisbane. The next meeting at the Hall will be on the 2nd April. For more information contact John Green Ph.54832764 or visit the club website.

Personal Risk Insurance made easy Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy A FEW weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of protecting your income and your ability to earn an income. You do this by way of Personal Risk Insurance. This Personal Risk Insurance comes in several forms including Income Protection, Trauma Insurance, and Life Insurance. Last time we focused on Income Protection Insurance and its ability to replace your income should you be unwell and able to work. Let’s look at Trauma Insurance. It can seem similar to Income Protection however it is generally a ‘lump sum’ paid to an individual when you suffer or are diagnosed with a specific illness. The types of illnesses covered can vary however the common ones tend to be cancer, heart attack, and stroke. A lump sum amount is chosen when the policy is taken and this the amount paid if necessary. This insurance is to be taken on its own or in conjunction with another type of Personal Risk Insurance. Unfortunately, the likelihood of people suffering these types of illnesses is increasing. Fortunately, the

survival rate for these illnesses is also high. People however need funds to assist them through this. Therefore, we are seeing an increased demand for this type of insurance. There are also many factors to consider when identifying an amount to insure for. These include: • Possible medical and rehabilitation costs • Ongoing nursing or carer costs; Change of living environment such as moving to better accommodation or home modifications • Living expenses while you recovering What we don’t want to see is any of these traumatic circumstances use up equity in peoples’ homes or depleting life savings. Life Insurance is probably the more well known type of insurance. It is generally paid as a lump

sum on the death of the person insured. This type of insurance is well known however what common discussion is often around is the amount to insure for. Some want to cover primarily debt while others want to include additional funds. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said providing support to Chloe to further her tertiary education was part of the Community Bank branch’s commitment to building a stronger community. “The idea behind the scholarship is to assist one regional or rural student per year from Noosa Dis-

Noosa District State High School principal, Chris Roff said he was delighted Chloe will be financially supported to achieve her very best this year, thanks to the generosity of the bank. Wheels of fortune THE wheels of fortune are turning for the ceramic and arts community of Cooroy, and artists further afield, as the Ceramic Centre of Excellence, begins 2016 with a successful bid. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund has awarded CCE $10544.35 towards a total of $12500, being raised to buy new pottery wheels for the Ceramic Studio in the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Formed in 2015, CCE inc. is developing a charter to promote excellence in ceramics. As a starter project, it was identified that for excellence to be practiced and showcased at the Butter Factory Pottery Workshop, equipment also needed to be of high quality. The current pottery wheels at the

pottery are old and in need of such repair, that a bid was made to replace them with new wheels. Thanks to the support of the Noosa Council, and the Cooroy Library arts precinct, CCE was able to apply for funds to support local ceramic endeavour and open the posibilities to visits from national and international guests. These wheels will become a crucial asset as Cooroy prepares for the 2017 International Wood fire Conference. CCE has undertaken to raise the balance of $2000 by hosting a soup bowls lunch on Sunday 13th March at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Stay tuned for details. CCE has ignited flame for ceramic achievement in Cooroy and Queensland.

When buying a property, it’s important to understand the upfront and ongoing costs. Some of the costs involved with home ownership include government fees, insurance, interest charges, strata fees, council fees and more. Read on for a full rundown of the costs you’re likely to come across. Upfront costs Purchase price: This is what you’ll pay to purchase the property and unless you’re paying outright, it’s likely to include money you’ve saved and money you’ve borrowed. Lenders will generally ask for a minimum deposit of 10% to 20% but others may lend to you if a family member pays the deposit, signs as guarantor or buys the property with you as a co-owner. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission says aiming for a deposit of 20% or more of the purchase price, plus enough to cover added costs, is a good goal. Also, contact your state revenue office about grants for first home owners.

Government fees: Stamp duty is a land/ property transfer tax applied by all Australian state and territory governments. It is one of the most significant upfront costs you’ll have to pay and it can vary greatly depending on where your property is located. Mortgage registration and transfer fees also apply and differ from state to state. Calculators Australia has a stamp duty calculator which may be able to help and, if you’re a first-home buyer, visit your state government website to see if you’re eligible for stamp duty concessions. Depending on your personal circumstances, the value of the property and the type of property, you may be exempt from paying stamp duty so be sure to do your research. Legal and conveyancing fees: When buying property, engaging a real estate conveyancer or solicitor that specialises in conveyancing is often a good idea. They’ll prepare the documentation and conduct the settlement process. The costs will vary

depending on the property you buy and the person you use. Loan application: This is also referred to as an establishment, up-front, start-up and set-up fee. It is a one-off payment to your lender when your loan commences. Fees can vary depending on your provider and will cover things such as credit checks, property appraisals and basic admin. Lender’s mortgage insurance: When applying for a loan, you may also have to pay lender’s mortgage insurance which is a type of insurance that protects the lender from borrowers who can’t repay the loan. If you have a deposit equal to or more than 20% of a property’s purchase price, generally you won’t be asked to pay this insurance. Building, pest and strata inspection reports: These inspections will alert you to structural problems or defects that may not be visible to the eye asbestos, termites, electrical, ventilation and plumbing faults. A strata report, if you’re buying a townhouse or apartment, can tell you whether the

Talking business BUSINESSES need to be ATO SuperStream compliant by 30 June 2016. If you have fewer than 19 employees, you only have two more quarterly payments to be ATO SuperStream compliant! What is SuperStream? SuperStream is a Government reform aimed at improving the

efficiency of the superannuation system. Under SuperStream, employers must make super contributions on behalf of their employees by submitting payments electronically in a consistent and simplified manner. Why do I need to be SuperStream compliant? SuperStream is mandatory for all employers making super

property is well run, well maintained and adequately financed. Moving costs: If you plan on moving into the property rather than renting it out, moving costs can vary depending on distance, if you rent a van, ask your mates to help or hire a professional removalist. Ongoing costs Loan repayments: You need to pay back what you’ve borrowed and some loan providers may have facilities to help you keep charges down or access money you’ve repaid if you need it. You may also want to consider using an offset account if your lender offers this. It is a transaction account linked to a home loan to help reduce the interest payable against your outstanding loan balance. How much you pay back and how often you make repayments will affect how long it takes to pay off your home loan. A Loan repayments calculator can help you crunch the numbers. Interest charges: You’ll pay interest on the money you borrow so it’s a good idea to compare what different

lenders can offer and to check out the comparison rate. You can generally choose a fixed or variable rate, or a combination of the two. This is worth some research as it can make a big difference to your repayments, particularly if interest rates move up or down. Other ongoing expenses: Strata fees for communally managed properties; Council rates; Utility costs - water, gas and electricity; Building and contents insurance; Any optional home improvements; Property maintenance and if you’re leasing out your property - property management. As Speaker of Queensland Parliament, Peter Wellington also had some wise words for the students during the ceremony. “Leadership is earned every day. I was delighted to see some of the group here early before assembly helping set up chairs and seeing what needed to be done for us all to enjoy the celebrations today. Leadership isn’t always glamourous, but how we handle that responsibility at any given time is something that will stay with us and be remembered by others,” Mr. Wellington shared. pomona Commemorative art wall The unveiling of a commemorative art wall celebrating the Sunshine Coast Equestrian Anzacs will be held on Saturday April 9th 10am-12 noon at the Community Enterprise Centre, 1 School Street, Pomona. The 5th Light Horse Anzac memorial is a mosaic, slump glass-art and hardwood installation funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs, Artslink Qld, the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal and NISER. The art work was designed and created by local Noosa hinterland artists Jason Makeig, Lillian Shewring and Lynda Black plus a significant number of community volunteers and supporters of the project. The Sunshine Coast hinterland has a rich equestrian and Anzac history. This unique art installation pays tribute to the light horsemen and their horses who fought in World War I. The work highlights the Anzacs winning victory at the Battle of Beersheba in Palestine and the project is an extension of the Anzac Equestrian History DVD that NISER produced in 2015. The new Mayor of Noosa Shire Council will be invited to unveil the commemorative wall and the event also heralds the official launch of the NISER Community Enterprise Centre at

Pomona. The Centre is the refurbished ‘Old Rangers House’ and Queensland Parks & Wildlife offices. It is now a hub of activity and offers assistance for people starting businesses, employment projects, training and art workshops, consultations and access to counselling and therapies. Inside the Centre the walls are hung

with a collection of paintings and drawings by local artists Lynda Black which will also be on show at the launch. Members of the public are invited to attend this official launch and celebrate the 5th Light Horse Regiment and the equestrian Anzacs leading up to Anzac Day 2016. Light refreshments will be available.

Cooran Acoustic Night Get ready for the second Acoustic Night this year, to be held on 12th March, at the School of Arts Hall Cooran. Wow! What an incredible night our first February concert was! Both onlookers & performers appeared to enjoy themselves immensely. It was a great turnout, as act after act brought something delightfully fresh to the stage. It truly is remarkable the level of talent which is drawn to this event, here in the little town of Cooran. The February evening treated the audience to acts not only of a high calibre, but also wonderfully diverse as the night wore on. And if one supposed it were only guitars or singing, they would be wrong! The Cooran Acoustic Night encourages those creative people who have

something they wish to present to an audience and welcome new acts to the concert. The last evening brought the eclectic and the aspiring; the accomplished; and the inventive. Such acts as Drumming, Dancing, Singing, Violin, Cello, Country, Piano, Classical and more. Be sure not to miss the next one! The Cooran Acoustic Night is held in the School of Arts Hall, King St., Cooran. Doors open at 6.30pm - Show starts 7pm so get in early to scrawl your name on the board! Great food is available including Tea, Coffee & Cakes. $4 entry and there’s a lucky door prize. Kids free. This is an alcohol free event. Like our Facebook page: Cooran Acoustic Night

More than your average doctor surgery MOST people have seen the Cooroy Family Practice sign as they drive into town but not everyone knows that this is much more than your average doctor surgery. There are lots of things that make this practice stand out. It is one of the few 100% bulk billing medical practices in the region which is unique enough but Cooroy Family Practice is also home to a range of health professionals all under the one roof. As well as two GPs, Dr Hafiz Zia and Dr Dhara Contractor, their team also includes Paediatricians Dr Bob McCrossin and Dr Sona Rao, Psychologist Anne Berquier, Exercise Physiologist Sara Davey and Dietician David Franklin. There is also a general nursing service including, among others, health risk assessment for diabetes type 2 and supporting the doctors with their chronic disease management. This comprehensive team means that a wide range of health care is available for the entire family at one location. Just a few of the medical issues the team address include anxiety, depression, trauma, autism spectrum disorders, weight man-

agement, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, gastroenterology, neonatal and prenatal care and skin checks. They also provide specialised care in a range of areas including an indigenous health program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and health services specific to seniors, children, men and women. As if the range of services didn’t set them apart from the crowd, they are also passionate about being involved in the community. “We care about the people in our community which is why we offer 100% bulk billing with no gap fee ensuring the entire community has access to good medical care. But we also are active in the community in other ways such as volunteering and sponsoring community groups and events like Christmas in Cooroy, Cooroy Fusion, Climb the Mountain and several sporting groups. Cooroy is a wonderful community and we are so proud to be an integral part of it,” said practice manager, Vivianne Dawalibi. Phone 5472 0064 for appointments.

Taking care of your skin MELANOMA March is a month long awareness campaign dedicated to raising funds and awareness for “Australia’s national cancer.” So we thought it would be a fitting time for some advice on the importance of sun-care and skin protection from your LiveLife Pharmacy. J So why is being Sun Smart so important? Overexposure to both the sun and artificial (e.g. solariums) ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancers. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. At least 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70. • It is four times more common than any other

cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous of the skin cancers. It is the 4th most common cancer in Australia, BUT the most common cancer in Australians aged 15- 24 years. The lifetime risk is 1 in 29. That means for every 29 people walking into your local pharmacy today, 1 will get a melanoma in their lifetime. At least one in 10 of these people will be killed by it. That is about 12 people walking into your local pharmacy today who will die of a skin cancer. So sunscreen is obviously important. Remember to slip, slop, slap. SPM Law supports International Women’s Day TUESDAY 8 March 2016 marks this year’s International Women’s Day (“IWD”). IWD celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women around the world. However, it also serves another important function. IWD events worldwide focus the spotlight on areas of gender disparity and issues facing women in the modern world. Unsurprisingly, a number of events this year are focusing the spotlight on domestic violence. Zonta is a global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. This year in celebration of IWD, the Zonta Club of Noosa is hosting its annual IWD Breakfast on 8 March 2016 at the RACV Resort Noosa from 6.00am for 6:30am start to 8:30am. The event aims to raise much needed funds to support women in the local Noosa community, with guest speaker Dr Shannon Spriggs (Mentors in Violence Prevention Program) discussing many of the domestic violence issues plaguing our community. Raffle prizes will also be drawn on the day.

Our greatest asset With Paul Bielby of Dowling Neylan Real Estate A particular person asked me why would you want to live in the hinterland? Sounds simple enough, I thought, lovely towns, plenty of facilities, safe environment for families, close enough to the coast to enjoy the climate, but far enough away to relax. A typical response and all quite true, but then that particular person said “Well why you would choose to live here above anywhere else?” When I really thought about it, it really came down to one thing. The people. First and foremost I wish to thank the Cooroy business owners and shop attendants for their welcoming attitudes and friendly professional service. Without a doubt this good old fashioned country town feel is a big drawcard for property buyers and new residents. Often home buyers comment on the vibrant community atmosphere and smiling locals. Imagine getting away from hectic city life with traffic and chaos, where people are too busy to say “Gidday” & all of the push and shove that goes with that, then arriving in Cooroy for lunch or coffee and seeing a thriving country town in full swing where people will give you the time of day. The excellent staff at the IGA in Cooroy are a great example of how to treat customers as people, and you can’t walk in there without someone saying hi, or someone giving you a smile. No matter what your style is, the coffee shops, restaurants, and clubs are ever popular even when they are at their busiest they make sure you are being looked after. Visitors to our area love the personal interaction, who wouldn’t want to be part of a community like this? It is a mark of a great Aussie town the way the residents treat their COMPLETE TREE Seniors. Cooroy locals go out of their way to help out when required. SERVICE Dedicated professionals for health and well-being like Dr Adam Roache from Life Enhancing Chiropractic & our great local Physios, Dentists and ADVICE & FREE Quotes Doctors are more examples of premium health practitioners who choose to operate here, bringing another dimension to the quality of life for people in the hinterland. Cooroy locals like to shop locally and support their businesses, people like Joe and the team at Cooroy Harvest Fresh put in extra effort to have their shop looking a treat each day and supply us with healthy local produce. It’s not all coffee and cakes either! Max down at Cooroy Hire Service has all the gear to get those jobs done at home, he can tell you in his own words why he has been part of this town for over 30 years. Another local success story is Cliff over at Sutton’s Cleaning Service, 37 years and still going strong. Cooroy is a great place to raise kids, with sporting clubs of all kinds are up and running and supported by parents. The sporting fields along Mary River Rd, and Sportsground parade are beautifully preCall Casey & Dave sented and enjoyed everyday. Cooroy is an important town that really works and the Australian spirit is alive and well. I look forward to sharing some more great attributes of this region in my next editorial. To be continued…

real estate Magnificent acreage with house and studio

IF privacy, space, fantastic views and an escape back to nature is what you are looking for then this beauty is for you. The views over the treetops to Mount Cooroora and beyond are simply amazing. The land has been planted with lemon myrtle trees as a business dream not yet realised. There are many other producing trees on the property with many more that could be planted. There is a huge dam on the property which is not shared, so having plenty of water is a great bonus. There is approximately an acre which has been cleared to gain easy access to the dam and for future development of the land and for extensive growing. The lowset house was built approximately 1920 and has hardwood floors and VJ walls throughout. The house is in a good and perfectly liveable condition as it is but would be a fabulous house and studio when renovated. It is already unique in design but would truly benefit from a little imagination and creative new owners. The separate studio with cathedral ceilings is an absolutely charming addition to the property and suitable as a teenagers retreat, parents retreat or artist’s studio. A very special property which only an inspection will allow you to appreciate the true beauty and potential of this spectacular location. To summarise, this great property has: Amazing views, privacy and potential to develop; Character cottage and studio with room to renovate; Fantastic useable land with large dam; Timber floors throughout and VJ walls; Garden sheds, old stables, patio, carport; and potential to harvest existing lemon myrtle trees. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity - call Jill Burke of Wythes Real Estate on 0439 790 883 to discuss the property and to arrange an inspection.

Give a big cheer for Ellie Noosa District State High School Year 10 student Ellie Graham travelled to the United States of America to compete in a cheerleading competition last month. Ellie’s team were the only Australian competitors and they faced seasoned teams from across the US. The Aussies came fifth in their division with only 1 point separating the top 5 teams. Ellie’s HPE teacher Ron Greentree was thrilled with the result and proud of Ellie’s talent. “Given the popularity of cheerleading competitions in the US, this was a great result,” Mr Greentree said.

School league team sponsored by Hinterland Dental THE Noosa District State High School open rugby league team received sponsorship from the Hinterland Dental Practice in Garnet Street, Cooroy. Sam and Gemma Roberts recently bought the Hinterland Dental practice and approached the school hoping to be able to sponsor a sporting team. The Open Rugby League team have been the beneficiaries of the new sponsorship with Hinterland Dental providing a new playing strip for the team. Sam is planning to visit the school to speak to students involved in sport about the importance of wearing mouth guards to protect their teeth from damage through contact. He is also offering a discounted rate for students on professionally moulded mouth-guards. Specific dates will be made available for students to go to the surgery to have mouth-guards fitted. These dates will be advertised soon. HPE teacher Ron Greentree and his rugby team are very grateful for Sam and Gemma’s contribution to the NDSHS sport program.
