Shaving for a cure

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student leaders Ruby Tucker and Reagan Greentree coordinated this year’s Shave

For A Cure event. Six brave students opted to have all their hair shaved off to raise awareness and money for the Leukaemia

Election results too close to call AT the time of printing the final results of our Council election are still unknown with the battle for Mayor running neck in neck. Currently Cr Tony Wellington has a marginal lead (12, 554) with Cr Sandy Bolton (11,862) hot on his heels so it will be the postal votes that are the decider. Ray Kelly fought the good fight but conceded defeat on the weekend. According to the latest poll front runners for Council at this stage are Frank Wilke with a clear lead (13,410) , Frank Pardon (11,135) and Joe Jurisevic (10,681), Jess Glasgow (10,434), Ingrid Jackson (10,192), Elaine Williams (9,620) and Brian Stockwell (9,554), so it’s going to be very close. The deadline for postal votes is 29 March, with results expected to be announced shortly after. Keep up to date with the election results as they happen at www.ecq.qld.gov.au or head to Noosa Today’s facebook page for all your council coverage.

Foundation at lunch time today. Year 12 student Talei Becker was the only female student to have her head shaved during the

lunch time event and was supported by friend Rhiarn Harris, who had shaved off her hair last weekend in solidarity for her grand-

mother who lost her hair in a battle with cancer. Ruby contacted Noosa Civic Stefan hairdresser Steph Brown (daughter of business studies teacher Glenn Brown) to volunteer her services shaving heads, and Ruby worked with student leader Georgia Leslie to MC the event. Students donated money to support and watch their friends have their heads shaved, with a collection tin passed around to all those who were in attendance in the school hall. Business students set up a cake stall and sold baked goods to the crowd that gathered to cheer on those shedding their locks. All $55 made from the bake sale was added to the donations to the Leukaemia Foundation. The total amount raised is yet to be counted, but the collection tin was very full at the end of the lunch break, indicating the event was a great success.

Matthew has competed successfully in three rounds so far to secure a place at Gladstone for the Regional Finals, which will be held in early April. The competition consists of a half hour interview with a panel of judges asking leadership and general knowledge questions. Contestants are then asked to perform two impromptu speeches and a five minute prepared speech to allow judges to finalise the most outstanding young leader and speaker. Matthew’s key speech touches on the crucial role

How do they sleep at night, these politicians? I am not as young and as bright as I used to be, But I’m as bold and as bright as I’ll ever be, And I’m certainly old enough to have seen many things, Depressions, wars, and poverty, and cabbages and kings. Yet in all my years, I have never seen, our politics in such a mess, Where the country’s going, we can only guess. The Senate with their sleepover would boggle any mind, To call that show a circus, would be being very kind. One can’t see any destination, not even any agenda, Although our very young, are being taught, about trans-gender. Ministers are contradicting themselves, even the PM, the top, Politicians are changing parties, the Senate is due for the chop. Defence Force chaps are telling on each other, Generals are ensuring everyone’s saluting one another. But Wait!!! There’s a change. Malcolm has asked the Governor General what he ought to do, The voters will tell him, and pretty quickly too!! The public is getting tired of all this politicking, The personalities, the confusion, the pointless tinkering. The senseless expensive campaigning, the self-serving oration. Meanwhile, who the hell’s worrying about caring for the nation???

almost 200 entrants from around Australia, and even one from the UK, the winning entry was Canistrum from Maleny-based designer Michael Lennie who receives an acquisitive prize of $10,000.

Mr Lennie said his entry was designed to be both art and a functional public toilet for Isaac Moore Park at the gateway to the town. He describes Canistrum as “an unfinished basket reflecting an unfinished history”. The word “canistrum” is Latin for wicker basket. “It brings ancient craft into the future public domain,” Mr Lennie said in his entry’s artistic statement. “Its bold and vibrant colours create a striking effect against the Kenilworth Conondale Ranges’ tree line.” Council will now work with the winner to develop detailed construction plans on the winning concept.

IN each edition of the Cooroy Rag we are placing the photo of the Rolled up Rag (smaller version) in one of the advertisements for you to try and find. All you have to do is email us at editorial@ cooroyrag. com.au or post your entry to: ‘Where’s the rolled up rag competition’, PO Box 898, Cooroy, 4563, and let us know which ad you found it in and the page number along with your name, address and phone number so we cantact you. Win a morning tea for you and four friends at Club Cooroy. Entries close April 8. SINCERE APOLOGIES - We accidentally left the ‘Rolled Up Rag’ out last edition so a brickbat to us as we know so many people pour over the paper searching. ENERGEX Helicopters to Hover over Cooroy: Energex has advised my office that they will soon have helicopters hovering over Cooroy. I have been informed the helicopter will be used by Energex for a photographic trial, using high resolution photography of pole tops in the Cooroy area. This will then be incorporated into 3D models used to visually inspect the line remotely. This helicopter exercise is scheduled during the week commencing 28 March 2016. I understand a letterbox drop will be undertaken by Energex in the identified areas. For more information please contact my office. People who are linked to the mypolice sunshine coast blog site, can also receive up to date information on people our Police are trying to find either because they have disappeared or they are wanted in connections with criminal investigations. Follow our Sunshine Coast Police at: http:/ /mypolice.qld.gov.au/sunshinecoast/ Public Housing tenants have had a win: The Newman Government’s rule requiring that all social housing tenants need permission if they were away from their residents for more than one week has been overturned. I am aware of the distress and anxiety this rule caused to many tenants of all ages who were afraid that if they were hospitalised or visiting family or friends, they may have their lease terminated. I am pleased that the current Government has changed this rule whereby tenants can now leave their residence for eight (8) weeks without requiring prior approval and if they have justifiable reasons way they need to be away from more than that period, extended leave can be provided on a case by case basis. Yandina and Kenilworth Ambulance Station update: The Qld government infrastructure plan release, has confirmed that these two new ambulance stations are on track to be funded in the 2016/17 financial year. I hope the planning and construction of the Kenilworth Ambulance Station will assist in encouraging our doctors to re-establish a doctor’s presence in Kenilworth.

Accounts Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy EVERY business has a transactional bank account, but have you got the right one? 1. Do you have specific legislative requirements to consider? This relates to your business and financial structure. For example, Real-Estate Agents and Solicitors are required to have trust accounts to handle deposits on property sales and so forth. Not-for-profit or volunteer organisations may also have particularly requirements in relation to their financial management and bank accounts. 2. How do your staff and suppliers want to be paid? Increasingly, staff and suppliers want to be paid directly into their bank accounts. If this is the case for you, you may need to ensure that your main transaction account includes this facility. In some industries, cash is still king. 3. How do your customers pay you? This varies enormously across industries. For some retailers it will be primarily a mix of cash, EFTPOS and credit

cards. For business-tobusiness suppliers it might be primarily direct debit and cheques. 4. Do you need to link to other accounts? In this day and age many businesses have multiple accounts, investment accounts, loan accounts, credit cards, partner accounts and so forth. In the case of an owner-operator it may also include personal accounts, home-loan and so forth. 5. Do you require multiple signatures/ approval? This is a very important issue if your business has multiple owners or if staff have been delegated a certain amount of authority over the accounting and banking function.

6. What are your reporting requirements? For some businesses the monthly statement in the mail is enough. For other businesses day by day transactional details are required, along with an instant balance. 7. Talk to your Branch Manager There is always more than one way to set up your banking. If you know what it is you want from us, then we are confident that we have the range of banking products and options to meet your requirements. To talk more about your accounts or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

news School farewells Chappy Shane on Harmony Day

COOROY RAG

NOOSA District State High School today celebrated Harmony Day, through a range of lunch time activities promoting empathy, understanding and a celebration of difference; and the day was also marked as a farewell and thank you to school chaplain Shane Brigg for his four years of service to the school community. Harmony Day aligns with the school’s vision of ‘excellence through diversity’; a vision that came to life through school chaplain Shane Brigg’s multi-coloured interactive string dis-

play. The colourful string display started off contained within a area under D Block classrooms, and quickly grew as students helped to add in more connections of colour and supporting ‘webs’. This activity helped to visually showcase diversity and how it grows and develops with the love and support of others within the school community. Chaplain Shane Brigg (‘Chappy Shane’) has been instrumental in developing a supportive and respectful culture at NDSHS, through his chaplaincy pro-

grams, weekly breakfasts; school lunches and positive interactions with students, their families and the staff at NDSHS. Harmony Day sadly marked Chappy Shane’s second last day at the Cooroy Campus, with the school chaplain leaving NDSHS for a new full-time opportunity at Chancellor State College. Many students began the school day teary-eyed as Chappy Shane said he farewell to the Cooroy Campus at the full school parade this morning. “Even though we’re get-

ting a new chappy, the school won’t be the same without Chappy Shane,” Year 12 student Chloe Duckworth said. Students presented Chappy Shane with a large board of parting messages from the school community at the full school parade as a gesture of appreciation. Chappy Shane spoke about his fondness for Harmony Day at the full school parade and how he will miss the enthusiasm and creativity of the NDSHS students in the way in which they apply themselves to the activities each year. Students set up a photo booth, complete with goofy props and messages around the themes of diversity and harmony and they enjoyed a free live concert

“on the green” (school oval) by local act, The Floating Bridges. Pancakes were sold by the Interact Club to raise funds for Nepalese Primary Schools that will be visited by NDSHS teachers Bridge Muir and Brad Huggins in coming days. The funds raised from the pancake sale will assist with rebuilding classrooms, making furniture and the development of ESL (English as a Second Language) resources for the students and programs for their teachers. Harmony Day assisted in developing knowledge, understanding, empathy and respect for difference and promoting active citizenship at a classroom level as well as on a global scale.

A pretty cool thing happened in Cooroy last week

Congratulations Tom, Dylan, Johanna and Jade on being awarded the Australian Scout Medallion FOUR bright young, local talents were celebrated at Cooroy Scout Den after being awarded the Australian Scout Medallion. So, Johanna Beasley, Jade Clarke, Thomas Haack and Dylan Hafey, take a bow. It’s quite the achievement considering the Scout program from start to finish is an incremented and progressive program which takes four years to complete. Designed to move a scout from a dependent

child to independent adolescent, the Scout must complete their Pioneer, Explorer and Adventurer levels. At Pioneer level a Scout learns basic skills such as camping and navigation. The Explorer level develops those skills while developing leadership skills. Once a Scout gets to the Adventurer level they must be able to teach the Pioneer level. Every task that needs to be completed at this level

must be instigated and organised by the Scout. This requires them to further develop their leadership skills, gain a number of proficiency badges and patrol activities that last eight hours or longer. They also have to complete a leadership course which includes organising and independently running an overnight activity and a 30 kilometre, three-day unassisted hike. It’s not surprising that not every Scout will complete

this exhaustive list of tasks, but Johanna, Jade, Thomas and Dylan passed with flying colours. Scout Group Leader, Sally Clarke said she’s excited these Scouts have come so far and is even more excited that three of the four will now be going onto Venturers where a whole new level of adventure awaits. “As the mother of one of the recipients, I know how much work has gone into getting this award. The

kids have put their heart and soul into it and so have their leaders. It’s no easy feat creating opportunities for these kids to succeed. It takes time and it takes money. “That’s where the funding from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has been so helpful. We’ve been able to buy the equipment we need to offer the full program. It was great to have Geoff Edwards present at our awards night last week to see the end result and the difference this makes in the kids’ lives,” Sally shared. Geoff said it’s the bank’s point of difference. “The Cooroy Scout Group is all about engaging and inspiring young locals to develop confidence, resilience and leadership. We look forward to providing more support in the years ahead,” Geoff said. If you would like more information about Cooroy Scout Group, or become a volunteer to help assist or lead some of the Scouts on these exciting activities, call Sally Clarke for more information on 0415 984 900 or arrange a visit to the Scout Den at 2 Mary River Road, Cooroy.

IF you’re thinking of setting up an SMSF or already running one, you’ve probably heard these common self managed super fund (SMSF) myths. It’s time to set the record straight. You could call it tall poppy syndrome. With SMSFs now the largest and fastest growing sector in Australian super, they’ve attracted plenty of commentary from the media and super industry insiders, some of it wide of the mark. Now it’s time to sort out the myths from the reality. The myth: SMSFs don’t diversify The reality: SMSFs are often just part of a larger strategy It’s often said that SMSFs aren’t diversified, at least in comparison to the giant industry and retail funds. And at first glance, the data seems to bear this out. According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), in March 2015, SMSF portfolios were highly concentrated in Australian shares and cash, with few direct international investments. Yet this is only part of the picture. The same ATO data shows that most SMSF portfolios hold managed funds and, according to Peter Burgess, Head of Policy, Technical & Educational Services at AMP SMSF, managed funds are often the vehicle of choice for SMSF trustees seeking broader diversification, especially offshore. Research also shows that SMSF trustees typically have 50% or more of their wealth outside their SMSF . This means their SMSF holdings are often only part of a larger and more diversified financial strategy. The myth: SMSFs lack strong supervision

The reality: SMSF members are actively engaged in managing their money Given the strict prudential rules the big APRAregulated funds have to follow, it’s not surprising some fund managers and commentators think SMSFs should be more tightly supervised. But those prudential rules are there to ensure fund trustees keep their financial promises to their members - not really a problem when the members and the trustees are one and the same. The myth: SMSFs fail on compliance The reality: Despite hugely complex rules, most SMSFs are fully compliant Investment professionals sometimes suggest SMSF trustees lack the skills to meet their compliance responsibilities. This is one of the easiest myths to disprove. ATO statistics reveal that fewer than 2% of SMSFs were reported for compliance breaches in 2014. This is not surprising when you consider the high standard of advice now available to trustees from accountants, advisers and specialist SMSF administrators. The myth: SMSFs take dangerous risks The reality: SMSF trustees are generally conservative It’s true that SMSF trustees aren’t subject to the same investment checks and balances as the big APRA-regulated funds. But while that could give them the freedom to splurge on riskier investments, research shows the opposite is true. For example, 51% of SMSF direct Australian shareholdings were in the ASX top 10 shares. Burgess argues that this indicates SMSFs are, if anything, more conservative than their regulated counterparts, not less so.

INSTALL a new Blaze slow combustion heater and your most difficult task on a cold Winter’s night will be to drag yourself from its penetrating warmth. From Pecan Engineering, an Australian industry leader since 1975, the new Blaze heaters burn so efficiently they will better emission standards to be introduced in 2019, with an incredibly low emission factor of .71g/

kg for the 500LE. Of course, more efficient burning, as high as 60% for the 500LE, means more effective heating. Your Blaze extracts every calorie from the wood it burns before distributing it as warmth throughout your home. The 500LE model heats up to 18 squares (170m2). This burning efficiency also plays an important part in protecting your environment. But one glance will tell you burning efficiency isn’t the only feature that sets Blaze heaters apart. Simple clean lines provide a stylish look that fit perfectly with contemporary decor. See a living fire blazing inside their large glass door and we’re sure you’ll agree the new Blaze heaters look brilliant! Now with a FREE flue kit valued at $495.00 hurry in while stock last. The myth: SMSF members lack legal protection from fraud The reality: Many SMSF investments are protected (but not all) The collapse of Trio Capital in 2009 highlighted a key difference between SMSFs and APRA-regulated funds. In this case, industry and retail funds were able to seek government compensation for fraud, while SMSFs could not. But ATO figures show most SMSF investments are in assets that offer some protection from fraud and theft. This includes: • cash investments (usually government guaranteed up to $250,000), • Cash transactions (covered by the ePayment Code), • direct share investments (covered by the National Guarantee Fund) • property (less exposed to theft and fraud). What does all this mean for SMSF members? As long as you invest with care, you can rest easy. Like to know more? If you’d like help with your SMSF, simply call us on 07 5447 7740. The proof is in the printing

QMP Printers have a much higher profile in their Jarrah Street location SIX months after moving from their premises in Lamonts Road, Queensland Media Print (QMP) is now a part of the vibrant business community in the Cooroy Industrial Estate. Now firmly established in the building with the ‘bright orange awning’ at 17 Jarrah Street, QMP has been able to expand it’s potential with new equipment and a much higher profile to the public.

“After 23 years in business, you think most people know where you are, but now we are more visible and much more accessible to our client base,” said QMP owner, Allan Mulcahy. The new location is just one important aspect of a number of changes that have kept QMP on top of their game in recent years. “With advancements in technology over the past

ten years, QMP has had to invest and diversify to keep pace with the changes in our industry” Allan said. For QMP, these changes have included investing in both Digital and Wide Format technologies to compliment the traditional offset method of printing which has been the mainstay of printers for over 50 years. Digital printing, as the name suggests, is a com-

puter based technology that provides an economical way to print full colour projects in short runs. While digital printing has many applications, it is perfect for the printing of family history books and suchlike where local authors often spend hundreds of hours researching and typing, but find the cost of printing through traditional avenues, much too expensive. QMP has printed many books for local authors in runs from 6 copies to 1000 copies. In explaining the strengths of Wide Format technology, Allan said, “Wide format printing gives a whole new dimension to our product range. This technology has brought us into areas traditionally held by screen printers and sign writers. We now produce outdoor products from bumper stickers and waterproof labels to building signs and market banners, he said. Asked if he thought local print shops were being replaced by online suppliers and more affordable office printers, Allan said he believed there will always be a place for the local professional printer. “Online services cannot supply a

face to face service for graphic design - nor can they show you the type of card or paper you’re signing up for. Clients who have tried the online process often report disappointing results and a lack of control over the job,” he said. “While it is true that office printers are cheaper than they used to be, it is common knowledge that when down time and the cost of inks and toners are taken into account, the local print shop offers a more cost effective solution and almost always at a superior quality” Allan proudly acknowledges that the success of QMP is largely due to the effort and dedication of those who work with him. QMP’s graphic artist, Shanna, now in her eighth year, is a qualified artist with broad experience in all fields of printing. Steve, QMP’s printer is nudging 20 years with the company, and has been with QMP since leaving school. There’s not a piece of machinery he doesn’t know backwards. “It’s a team effort - we all have our role to play and I’m very fortunate to have the team I have,” Allan said.

COOROY RAG Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group

Cecily Fearnley

HERITAGE week is in April, to take part Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group will hold a workshop on “Dig up your Ancestors. Do you know who they were?”. It is so interesting to find more than just the BDMs of your family. The session will be on Monday 11th April from 9:00 to 11:30am at the Research Room, 41 Miva Street, Cooroy. Noosa Councillor, Joe Jurisevic will tell us about his family history discoveries at our monthly meeting on Saturday 9th April starting at 1:00pm . The Cooory Library on Maple Street will be be the venue. At our March meeting Cecily Fearnley gave an engaging talk on how to make our family histories more interesting and entertaining by using drawings and contemporary pictures. Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society THE society has been established for 30 years and the idea is to promote the beauty and cultivation of these exotic orchids and foliage plants. The best way to share this with the general public is to display the plants at a show. Our aim is to promote our hobby and share knowledge. There are over 30,000 species of orchids in the world so attending an orchid show you can see what grows readily in our area. Mother’s day weekend is an ideal time to showcase these beautiful blooms and there will be ample orchids on display and for sale. Autumn is the flowering time of the Queensland floral emblem (The Cooktown Orchid) Den. bigibbum. Another orchid flowering at this time of the year is the cluster Cattleya’s that make a beautiful show and are easy to cultivate in our area. They will be on display at the show held in C.W.A Hall Cooroy. The show is open Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May. The club has a Mother’s Day raffle and ad-

mission is a mere $2. The club ventured to an International Orchid Fair in Brisbane at the beginning of the month where many new orchids were purchased. These bus trips are also a great way to get to know your fellow members. Our March meeting was held in the beautiful tropical garden of John and Desiree Phillips, 62 members seemed to enjoy themselves. Their orchids were very well grown, a credit to them both. The club meets at Tinbeerwah hall the first Saturday of each month starting at 1pm. Visitors are most welcome. For more information contact John Green Ph. 54832764

BOOK REVIEW: The Natural Way of Things SO I finished Charlotte Wood’s - The Natural Way of Things last night. Firstly, this is the only novel of Charlotte’s that I have read so I have nothing to compare to. It has been shortlisted for numerous literary awards and the blurb had intrigued me since ordering it. The Natural Way of things - A Group of ten women are imprisoned on a deserted farm in the Australian outback. They don’t know how they got there, all they know is that they were drugged and kidnapped beforehand and all girls have something in common. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and although I found the writing to be a bit disjointed at times I suppose it matched the theme of the book. It is fast paced and has you wondering where is it going and how will it end … who are these women and who is holding them captive and why? There are certainly elements of the book that parallel well publicized items involving women in the media, that make you think and evaluate. This is a gritty, clever and at times disturbing book but the way it is written makes you want to know more … more about the characters … more about the why’s. Unfortunately, you’re left with more questions than answers in the end but it certainly does make you think. I felt the ending was frustrating and rushed and was left feel-

ing it had so much more potential. I have to say I am in the minority though after reading the reviews lol. This book would be great for a book club as it would be a great catalyst for discussion and debate and also for those that enjoy this genre. Natalie Heaslip, Little Shop of Soul Bookshop

IT’S here! The soon to be famous banana split! And Joe the Fruiterer, owner of Cooroy Harvest Fresh on the corner of Maple and Emerald Street, is the person we have to thank for it. Joe is determined to make his banana splits world famous, starting with the sunshine coast. He has a vision that Cooroy will become the

The banana splits are served from ‘the big squeeze juice bar’ in store, which is already a popular choice with locals for grabbing a daily freshly squeezed juice, smoothie or milkshake. Using the award winning Colin James Gelato Joe is confident they will be a hit year round. His menu will also include sundaes and frappes. ECZEMA, also called dermatitis, is a group of conditions in which the skin is dry, itchy and scaly (note: not “hot,” which is usually more a sign of infection). In severe outbreaks the skin may become raw, red and bleeding. It affects up to 30% of pre-school aged children (5 years or under), and 1 in 6 school-aged children in Australia Eczema is thought to be triggered by different factors for different people. Some common examples include: Irritants (e.g. soaps and shampoos); Allergens (e.g. dust mites and pet hair); Microbes (e.g. some types of virus and bacteria); Hot/cold temperatures (and humidity changes that accompany these); Foods (e.g. dairy products and eggs); Stress; Hormones Some of us live with this skin condition every day of our lives. The team at your LiveLife Pharmacy are here to help you and your family to look after your skin. Some lifestyle hints that we may recommend include: Avoid excessively hot water when showering and bathing; When towelling dry, pat rather than rub your skin; Apply cool, wet compresses – the affected area may even be covered with bandages and dressings to help protect the skin and prevent scratching; Avoid dry conditions (e.g. air conditioners and heaters); Avoid soap based products – Use a soap-free cleanser or bath oil. Also try to avoid colours and fragrances in these

cleansers; Apply a thick moisturiser to the skin once or twice daily (best applied immediately after a shower/bath to retain the moisture in the skin). Consider increasing this frequency of application if living/working in a dry/air-conditions/heated environment; Wear clothes made of natural fibres where possible, so the skin may breathe; Avoid any known triggers and irritants; Wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent; Avoid chlorinated pools if possible. Otherwise, ensure you shower then moisturise your skin well when you get out; When using a new cosmetic, try testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area of skin such as your forearm. That way if you experience a reaction, you can avoid using it again; Try to avoid scratching the skin, as this can lead to infection or scarring – keep your fingernails short; Choose mild/unscented laundry detergent. Low cost solutions for digestive health

Sauerkraut helps with digestive function SYMPTOMS such as bloating, indigestion, constipation, and reflux can cause a lot of discomfort. If left untreated for long periods they can even make other health problems worse. Nutritionist, Jodie Persovic, says she has seen many cases of significant improvement with natural remedies that are very cost effective. “In some cases the remedy is already in the pantry or the garden. Digestive problems may also be caused by food intolerance or disease, so always seek professional advice if the problem persists,” said Jodie. General Gut Health A healthy micro-biome (gut flora) is at the heart of healthy digestive function. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kim chi, yogurt (properly cultured) and beet kvass provide beneficial microbes, and the quality and quantity of carbohydrates you eat also influences the types of bugs that will thrive in your gut. Bloating: fennel tea, bitter greens, sour flavour, fermented foods Bitter greens stimulate the liver and the digestive processes. Adding leafy greens, such as rocket, radicchio or mescaline lettuce to your salad is a simple way to add bitters. Then for the sour flavour, try a salad dressing with olive oil and lemon, lime juice or vinegar.

Drink fennel tea before, during or after a meal. The trick here is to integrate these remedies into your daily eating patterns so you can enjoy improved heath in the long term. Constipation: water, exercise, fibre, psyllium husk, slippery elm, fermented foods The success of these remedies varies from person to person, note that a remedy that works for one person may make the issue worse for someone else. These are the basics for good bowel health: - Drink 1.5 - 2 litres of water per day, more in summer or with exercise - Get your daily activity, even a 10 minute walk in the morning can be enough to stimulate the peristalsis of the bowel - Vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fruit, nuts and seeds are all good sources of fibre If these three don’t work then try slippery elm. It is cheapest as a powder from supermarkets in the health food section. Add 1/2 - 1 tsp to 150 ml of water (shake in a jar to mix or add to other food) and drink morning and/or night. Psyllium husk can also be taken the same way, but add more water as it is very absorbent and too little water can make constipation worse. Reflux: ginger or peppermint tea, apple cider vinegar Common causes include: over eating (especially rich fatty food) and eating too quickly. So try addressing these first. If reflux persists, try: - Ginger or peppermint tea before, during or after a meal - Apple cider vinegar taken before a meal (add 1 tsp or less to a glass of water). Note that this one doesn’t work for everyone. Diarrhoea: slippery elm, type of fibre, fermented foods Replacing insoluble fibre with a soluble version can be helpful as the insoluble fibre can exacerbate diarrhoea and other abdominal discomfort. On the other hand, soluble fibre can slow down the digestive transit time.

Denture Services

Insoluble fibre: wheat bran, nuts and seeds, stringy fibres in some vegetables Soluble fibre: rolled oats, legumes, some fruits (moderate amount) If the Problem Persists Many digestive problems can be the result of food intolerances and sometimes remedy suggestions such as the above can actually make an inflamed digestive tract worse. If you are unsure, advice from a health professional is recommended. Dietitian and Naturopath, Jodie Persovic, specialises in digestive health problems. WORLD Health Day is on 7th April and this year the World Health Organisation (WHO) is determined to ‘Beat Diabetes’. Diabetes is a silent killer with many of the symptoms going unnoticed or discredited as something else, but the fact is that 1.5 million people died as a result of diabetes in 2012 alone. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce insulin or cannot absorb insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows the body to absorb, convert, and use sugars in the blood. This is what provides people with the energy they need to live. However, without insulin, blood sugars build up and will eventually cause damage to every major organ in the body; causing heart attacks, nerve damage, strokes, impotence, blindness, kidney damage, and infections that lead to amputation. Diabetes is split into two types. People with Type 1 Diabetes generally do not produce their own insulin which means they will most likely need injections to manage their condition. People with Type 2 Diabetes can produce insulin however it may not be enough or may not be absorbed properly by the body. This form of diabetes accounts

for 90% of cases. Typically, people with Type 2 Diabetes are presented as overweight and inactive, two aspects which raise a person’s insulin needs. However, this does not mean that only an overweight and/or inactive person can develop Type 2 Diabetes. If you are noticing any symptoms that point towards Diabetes it is crucial to make an appointment with your local GP and discuss your concerns. Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine, thirst, constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly or gradually over time so it is important to make sure you take note of abnormalities. At Cooroy Family Practice, exercise physiologist Sara Davey has spent several years learning and specialising in the treatment of Diabetes, among other aspect of healthcare. Cooroy Family Practice is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm. If you would like to make an appointment to discuss possible Diabetes symptoms that you may have, or just come in for a check-up, you can make an appointment online at www.cooroyfamilypractice.com.au or by calling 07 5472 0064.

Unitywater support kick-starts Men’s Shed Pomona SUPPORT from Unitywater has allowed the newly-formed Men’s Shed Pomona to establish a formal meeting space two years ahead of schedule. The organisation was able to lease an unoccupied shed at the old forestry depot at Pomona. Unitywater helped the facility with water and sewerage connections. “We wanted to do whatever we could to help Men’s Shed Pomona get off the ground sooner rather than later,” Unitywater CEO George Theo said. “Men’s Sheds play such an important role in our society. They are places for men to meet, relax and socialise. They provide equipment and resources that allow members to contribute to community projects while sharing knowledge or learning new manual skills. “I expect Men’s Shed Pomona to be a real hub for the community, offering local men mateship and support. Unitywater is proud to offer its assistance.”

President Doug Bettens said shed members will make wooden nesting boxes for wildlife in return for Unitywater’s generous partnership. The nesting boxes will be placed in bushland surrounding some of Unitywater’s Sewage Treatment Plants. “The Unitywater partnership has contributed greatly to us being in a position to start renovating the shed some two years ahead of our initial planning,” Mr Bettens said. “Together with funding from other sources, we can now finish building the kitchen, toilet, lounge area and metal shed. “Our construction phase should be completed in the first half of this year, and then we will shift to a new building phase, this time focused on membership. We are planning a series of open days later in the year where we hope to attract lots of new members. We would also encourage any other organisation or business who may be in a position to help us to get in touch.” Follow Men’s Shed Pomona on Facebook for updates.

Pomona Country Markets POMONA Country Markets are held on the second and fourth Saturday of the month in picturesque Stan Topper Park (at the top of Memorial Avenue, the main shopping street), the market is run by Pomona Inc. and helps to support the Old Pomona Railway Art Gallery and other community projects. Stalls set up at around 6.30 am and trade till 12 noon. Merchandise varies, but some of the goodies on regular offer include home-grown in-season produce, a wide range of native and exotic plants and seedlings, herbs, crafts and bric-a-brac, etc.

Unitywater CEO George Theo (white collared shirt), Men’s Shed Pomona President Doug Bettens (second from left) and other Shed members. MANY thanks to all the kind Pomona people who went out of their way to help find my lost puppy, Leah Marigold, who took off from the Cooroora creek park on the afternoon of Saturday 13th. I was in hospital recovering from surgery at the time and my friend who was looking after my puppy told me that the most amazing thing happened when my puppy took off up Hill Street. The gentleman who was also at the park at the time, started to help look for her, and was then stopped by passersby who asked what he was looking for, then they also stopped to help. This had a domino affect and by the time Leah was found almost 100 people were helping to look for her. I am overwhelmed by this and am so grateful to everyone who helped search for her. I am also so proud to live in such a caring community like Pomona. My most genuine, heartfelt thanks to everyone. Love from Marie Allen Owner of Leah Marigold and Vegas
