Gloves off to Mark Evans - boxer, coach, mentor and all round good bloke LOCAL boxing coach, Mark Evans, has just taken on the role of Centre of Excellence Coach for Boxing Australia. His job will be to liaise with other Queensland boxing coaches to ensure consistency of coaching methods throughout the state and identify talented boxers that have the potential to represent their state and country at future Championships. This is exciting news for his own stable of junior boxers who are already producing some great results. Next month Impact Boxing Academy will be taking six of its State Title winners to Perth to represent Queensland at the National Titles. Payton Aird-Cardiff, Ben and Sam CameronHands, Cian Jones, Kayla Hardie and Tayla Robertson are all determined to do themselves, their coach, their club and their community proud and Evans is confident they’ll bring the Australian Titles back to Cooroy. “These kids never cease to impress me,” says Mark. “They’re focused, determined and always give whatever I ask of them. And what I ask from them is to give their best, both in and out of the boxing ring.” Mark’s passion for his sport is more than obvious. Although a busy father of three with his own painting business, he trains his boxers five nights a week and travels with them to tournaments every second weekend.

But it’s a subtle reference to something more than just a love of the physical competitiveness of the sport, that seems to be the real driving force behind Mark’s passion and dedication. “Boxing did a lot for me when I was young and wayward, and I see the positive effect it’s had on kids I’ve coached,” says Mark. The dunce’s guide to education Our society seems to be awash with people doing surveys, I suppose it’s a part of living, in these modern days, But the ones that really intrigue me, as I seek some gratification, Are the ones that offer miles of graphs, depicting the ills of education. The latest one shows, and it is interesting reading, That in world mathematics the Chinese students are leading. For years we have suffered, long winded inquiries and commissions, By professors, psychologists, and wordy politicians. All they seem to do is leave the teachers and students confused, And Dads and Mums completely and worryingly bemused.

news Zipfs celebrate return to Cooroy IGA

Teachers choose their profession because they are dedicated, They don’t want to teach what is plainly out-dated, Perhaps in this day and age older pupils need a computer, But in those early learning years, children need an understanding tutor. It seems one of the difficulties which cause teachers’ concern, Is the child that stubbornly just doesn’t want to learn. A good teacher will work to stir up the pupils’ curiosity, They are the successful teachers, with clear superiority. Home life is important, the school day suitably discussed, And to show family interest, that’s certainly a must, I don’t claim or pretend to be a learned educator, Nor am I what people like to call, a pestiferous agitator, It’s just that I’m afraid that this urge to make children over-perform, May harm the teaching system, in every shape and form. Throwing money around is not the answer, money’s only part of it, It is teaching in the classroom, that is the soul and heart of it. Why don’t the politicians and the so-called “expert” population, Leave the teaching profession alone, let them handle education??. Politicians do not try to tell preachers how to preach, So why try to tell the teachers, the proper way to teach?? Jim Dunstan Peter and Jackie Zipf One would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man, if we spent less time proving that we can outwit Nature, and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority

Evans continues to make an impact Continued from Page 1 “It builds self-esteem. Everyone encourages everyone else and I’ve seen belligerent, rebellious teens or overweight couch potatoes, who’ve been dragged here by mothers at their wit’s end, do a complete 180 after just a few months.

“They’re fitter, healthier, happier and feel good about themselves and what they’re achieving. They build friendships and bonds that I know will last a lifetime. “Don’t get me wrong, not everyone who steps

into the ring is a troubled youth,” Mark’s quick to add. “It’s a great sport for both girls and boys from every walk of life.” For the past two years he’s volunteered his time and equipment to run a weekly boxing class for Special Ed students at Cooroy State School and he hopes that will continue in 2014. “I don’t know who got the most from those classes, me or the kids,” he laughs. Mark runs his gym on a donation only basis and admits that, like most grassroots clubs, finding the funds to as-

sist these youngsters achieve their goals is difficult. To raise the money for their equipment, clothing, registration fees and travel expenses he hosts an annual major boxing tournament in Cooroy that is always strongly supported by the community. He encourages any businesses or individuals who are looking at sponsoring a local club or event, to consider Impact Boxing Academy. “I can guarantee we’ll give you value for money.” Mark Evans can be contacted on 0403 264 048.

The Zipfs had owned Cooroy’s grocery store (then 4 Square) since 1996, seeing the business through its IGA transition in 2002, before selling to Mel and Gill Luke in 2007. In 2006 they won the awards for both National and International IGA Retailer of the Year. “We look forward to working with the Cooroy people once again and bringing back the sense of Cooroy having ‘its own’ store,” said Peter. “We have always prided ourselves on customer service, competitive pricing and making shopping with Cooroy Supa IGA an enjoyable experience.” While it will initially take a while to settle in, Peter and Jackie already have big plans in mind for the store. “The service area needs to be upgraded and this is one of our priorities” Peter said. “While it was state of the art when we first developed the store, times have changed and we need to move with them. As I have said before, customer service is our main focus and the changes that we will be making will reflect that.” Cooroy Supa IGA will be holding a relaunch/ celebration day on the 8th of March with Al and Nugget from Zinc FM broadcasting live from the store, facepainting and a sausage sizzle. So come on down as Peter and Jackie welcome you back to your, Cooroy Supa IGA.

Sixth straight dividend for Bank share holders

SCCFSL board members, managers and junior directors celebrate the dividend announcement to share holders - February 24, 2014 IT’S been said that you can’t run a successful business in an unsuccessful community. That seems to be the ultimate compliment paid to our Sunshine Coast community, because while some businesses continue to work through its ongoing economic challenges it’s a far different story for investors in three of the coast’s Community Bank branches. In fact it’s developed into an ongoing celebration of a homegrown Sunshine Coast success story.

Nearly 800 share holders, who have supported the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches since their inception (with the Cooroy Community Bank Branch opening in 2002) have now received their sixth dividend in as many years. Rick Cooper, Chairman of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL), who own and operate the Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin Community Bank branches,

said shareholders have now each received a share of the $138,895 the total dividend, based on 8.15 cents per $1.00 share of 1,704,238 fully franked shares when the dividend was issued in December. “Receiving a nice dividend payment is a great way for our company’s investors to start 2014,” Mr Cooper said. “This latest result is a culmination of a lot of hard work and local support from our Noosa and surrounding communities. As

we continue to say, bank with us and everybody benefits,” Mr. Cooper shared. “The directors of SCCFSL - our Community Bank Company, decided the dividend is a fair and just reward to all the shareholders who initially funded the establishment of the branches, and who have been enthusiastically watching their development. Business revenue has grown every year since our inception in 2002, and it’s another great result for our shareholders and our board, branch managers and staff who are all very proud of our continuing work in our communities. Without share holders’ support, our branches simply wouldn’t exist,” Mr. Cooper added. Cooroy Community Bank branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the shareholders won’t be the only locals to benefit from the sixth dividend. “The company’s re-

maining profits are being channelled back into communities via a range of donations and sponsorships. As many locals are aware, these include projects around Noosa such as: major sponsorship of Christmas In Cooroy, Cooroy Fusion, the Australian Body Art Carnival, the 2014 Noosa Long Weekend Festival, vehicles to RSPCA shelter and the heralded Noosa Street Reach program, the university scholarship program with Noosa District State High School and many more. By 30 June 2014, the total funds given back to communities will have exceeded $1.5 million. “In coming months the board will continue its program of community grants that will release further funds to assist with a wide range of projects. We’re really proud to be involved with a bank that’s giving locals a real say in the shaping of their own communities,” Mr Edwards said.

Free buses to stay NOOSA Council has agreed the popular Easter and Christmas free buses will keep rolling, but it wants to gauge just how effective the service is at reducing our holiday gridlock. Thursday night’s council meeting decided to support the free bus service again for a fortnight this Easter, from April 14th to 21st. The council will kick in $81,500 towards the innovative service from the transport levy. As well as the existing Translink services, there will be extra shuttles this Easter between Peregian Beach and Noosa Heads, as well as a continuous loop between Noosa Junction and Noosaville. The Noosa Heads Lions Park will also be used as an extra car park for the busiest five days of the Easter

holiday, from Thursday April 17th to Monday the 21st. While the free public transport service has grown in popularity right across the Sunshine Coast since it was first introduced in Noosa, Mayor Noel Playford says it’s a good time to measure what the service is achieving and whether it should be fine-tuned. “We need to be clear about what we’re trying to achieve here. Is it to reduce congestion in peak holiday times, or is to promote public transport usage in general,” said Mr Playford. “It’s part of our job” he says “to keep asking these questions when we’re spending ratepayers’ money.” The council will seek more detailed figures on how the public uses the free service during the Easter period.

news Minister Approves NDSHS Junior Secondary Campus

COOROY RAG AFTER 18 months of planning, community consultation and an anxious wait, the Minister for Education, Training and Employment the Hon John-Paul Langbroek, has ‘signed off’ on a Junior Secondary Campus proposal for Noosa District. On Wednesday 29 th January the school received formal notification of the approval. This now paves the way for the development of the Pomona site as a ‘purpose built‘ Junior Secondary Campus for the school community. This approval confirms that in 2015 all Year 7 and all Year 8 students enrolled at Noosa District SHS will attend the Junior Secondary Campus at Pomona with an estimated total population of approximately 450 students. All year 9 students will then transition to the Cooroy campus to continue their junior secondary schooling in the Junior Secondary Precinct already established and take advantage of the specialist facilities on offer as they move into the senior phase of their education. New Teaching Block Central to the school’s

proposal for this as the ‘preferred option’, was the expansion of existing teaching facilities at the site. The minister has given approval for new facilities to be built with an estimated value of almost $5 million dollars. Facilities will include a new two story teaching block consisting of: • 6 ‘General Learning Areas’ (classrooms) specifically designed for Junior secondary teaching • A large ‘Flexible Learning Area’ with wet area facilities • An outdoor Project Development Area • A further ‘Collaborative Teaching Space’ • A Staffroom and Head of Department Office. The building will be positioned at the front of the school to the right of the main entrance. It has been designed with dual stair access and a lift for students with disabilities. A two story design was chosen with possible future expansion in mind. The ground floor of the building will initially be an open space (Undercroft) with the development of new Administration offices for

the site a future possibility. In the immediate term it is envisaged that the Undercroft will make a valuable space for student assemblies, covered play and a waiting area for bus pick up. In addition to this, the campus will also see a redevelopment of the current student Resource Centre (Library) with existing areas ‘opened up’ and upgraded with technology to cater for the increased student population. For Students with Disabilities and support needs a designated teaching block is being developed and specialist toilet facilities will be added. To cater for an expanded HPE and Sport program a new multipurpose storage shed is planned that will also incorporate an outdoor teaching space and Weight Training room. A number of enhancements to teaching technology have also occurred particularly in the area of Industrial Design with the planned installation of a Data Projector, Laser Cutter and 3D Printer to complement the new junior Design

program. During the holiday break air conditioning has also been installed in the Administration building and teacher staffroom to improve the work environment for staff. A number of portable displays including plans for the new facilities, and features of our purpose built campus, are currently being developed and will be shared with the school community in a number of locations. All feeder Primary Schools will also be provided in the coming weeks with further information to share with their students, parents

and wider school communities. A purpose built Junior Secondary Campus now places Noosa District SHS at the forefront of schools across the state in introducing Year 7s to secondary and establishing a Junior Secondary Program of the highest quality. With enrolment positions expected to be in high demand, planning is already underway and further details will soon be forwarded to all Primary Schools so that parents can register their interest for joining the Noosa High school community in 2015.

FOR much of the Noosa community it was a ‘non-negotiable’ part of winning their council back, so the return of kerbside bulk rubbish collections will come as no surprise. Noosa Council’s Infrastructure committee, chaired by Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot, recommended the return of the service, and the full council has wasted no time giving it the green light. The kerbside collection will run over a seven week period from late April to early June. Councillor Joe Jurisevic is one of those cheering loudest about the return of the free service. The community is overjoyed to have this service back.” While some council staff raised the possibility of legal problems with piles of junk poten-

AS tough financial times continue, people remain cautious about many financial matters. Through my work I regularly listen to some of these concerns, particularly about the security a customers’ income. Some of the concern is around employment and the security of their job or possible reduced hours. Another is the perceived lack of alternative employment options should they wish or have to change employers or career paths. We tend to insure our home, cars and housing contents. However, we aren’t aware or simply don’t often tend to insure one of our most vital assets - our income. Take Personal Risk Insurance for example. What is it? Personal Risk Insurance comes in a number of forms but essentially it is an insurance policy that is taken out to cover an individual in the event they suffer from a serious illness, an injury or death. This includes Income Protection Insurance, Total and Permanent /Disability Insurance, Trauma Insurance and the most commonly known, Life Insurance. Income Insurance is also becoming more and more important these days. This type of insurance is designed to replace your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Most policies can cover up to 75% of your before tax income and it is paid directly to you the customer. They don’t pay it directly to banks or realestate agents etc. There is generally a waiting period which means it does not cover people for short term illnesses such as mild cases of the flu or an absenteeism of 2-3 days. More and more people are now being encouraged to look at Income Insurance for a

number of reasons, including: • A heavy reliance on two incomes to service bank debts and lifestyle. What happens if one of the incomes suddenly disappears? • Insufficient savings or “back-up” options should income cease. • An increase in statistics around likelihood of ill health before the age of 65. • An increase in statistics around serious illness such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. The topic of Income Protection Insurance is a big one. Some people may already have some limited coverage through their employee superannuation. Additionally premiums paid for these policies often can have tax advantages. My advice is to speak with a professional Financial Planner who can listen to your needs and then advise you of your options. Next time, I’ll go into more detail about Trauma Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Life Insurance. If you have any questions about insurance of any kind, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

MySuper is coming! By Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

THE government’s MySuper reforms take effect from 1 January 2014. If you haven’t made an active investment choice about where to invest your retirement savings, your employer will be required to pay your super contributions into a MySuper offering from 1 January 2014. What’s MySuper about? • Currently, when you join a super fund, you can choose an investment option—how and where you’d like your money invested to suit your financial goals. • If you don’t make an investment choice, your super contributions automatically go into what’s called a ‘default’ investment option— one that is intended to suit a broad range of financial needs. • With the introduction of MySuper come MySuper default options– simple and cost-effective superannuation options that are replacing existing default options. • On 1 January 2014, employers must start contributing to a MySuper offering for any employees who haven’t made an active investment choice. Do the MySuper changes impact everyone? No. If you’ve already made an active investment choice for your super fund, the MySuper changes will have no impact on you. Now’s the perfect time to start taking control of your retirement savings and make a choice about where to invest your money. Smart choices now can maximise income later. After all, it’s your money. And it’s your retirement you’re saving for. Take control of your retirement future Making an active investment choice is easier than you think. If you want to take control of your retirement savings and bring all of your super together, you can move your super to any AMP investment option by simply completing a rollover request. We will then send your request to your previous fund which will take three working days once they have all of the necessary information. AMP will then process your request within an additional three working days. Super changes that can help grow your retirement nest egg… It’s been a big year for super, with some important changes to the way you can save for your retirement. • If you’ve turned 60 and earn under $300,000, you can put more money into your super at the concessional 15 per cent tax rate. The before tax—or concessional—contributions cap is temporarily going up to $35,000 for 2013-14. • If you’ve turned 70 and you’re still working, you should have started to receive compulsory employer super contributions on 1 July 2013. • And if you’re retired, as of November 2013 the government has reduced the rate at which your investments are assumed to be earning income, potentially improving your eligibility for the age pension. The deeming rate has been reduced to 2 per cent for the first $46,600 for single pensioners and $77,400 for couples, and the deeming rate above these thresholds has been reduced to 3.5 per cent. • What’s deeming? As soon as you hit age pension age, super starts counting as an asset. It’s treated as a financial investment and subject to deeming. • The deeming rules assume your financial assets are earning a certain amount of income, regardless of the income they actually earn. Why not call your financial planner to talk about how you can make the most of these super changes to boost your retirement savings. HOW about we take a look at ‘dog training’ in a different light? Before you consider any training with your loved dog, look at what you want more than what you don’t want. If you focus on all the ‘naughty’ things your dog does, you may not see that he’s not naughty at all. He is just being a dog and doing doggie things. We expect him to fit in with us and we don’t even speak each other’s language. How are they supposed to understand US, if we don’t understand them? And most people don’t understand what their dog is trying to tell you. Have you considered all the wonderful things your dog can teach YOU? Some dogs are sent to us to teach us something valuable. You might have had dogs all your life but THIS one is different. He challenges you at every turn and it starts to turn into a relationship you have to manage as opposed to a loving, easy, happy time together. For example, you have an out of control dog - he barks to get you up, he barks for attention, he barks at visitors always on alert. He jumps on your guests, pulls on the lead and doesn’t come when he’s called. He just doesn’t listen to you. You try different things and you don’t see instant or lasting results and you don’t really seem to be getting anywhere. You probably don’t even realise that your behaviour makes his behaviour worse. Something is going to break (and it won’t be the dog!). Surprise - they don’t grow out of it. Recently I had a client whose dog was out of control and very demanding. When we got her dog under control, her attitude started to change about her life and she realised that no-one else respected her either. She wasn’t living her life the way she wanted and was always doing things for other people. She was being taken for granted. Her dog taught her that its alright to take control - he loved her the more for it, and it translated to her personal life. She started to command respect and stuck up for herself. People saw a change in her and her life started to go easier. It doesn’t mean you have to step on people to get what you want and neither do you have to put up with bad behaviour - from anyone- just like you don’t have to be tough and regimented in your approach to ‘training’ your dog. It’s about boundaries and education. It’s about respect - if everyone knows what you want and there is respect, there is joy! It’s also about lightening up. It’s not a serious business. It can be fun and a learning experience not just for your dog - but for you. ~ Faith Wild

Bank announches 2014 Junior directors AS far as opportunities in furthering a career in business is concerned, it really doesn’t get any better than this. Three Noosa District State High School Year 12 students have been given the chance to sit on a local board of directors who manage a multi-million dollar business, and they’re pretty excited! Penny Fisher, Daniel Epps and Stewart Hafey all share a keen interest in business and this month the trio were appointed as Junior Observers for 2014 on a board that manages one of few publically listed companies on the Sunshine Coast. COOROY RAG manages the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola and Tewantin. The allocation of these funds to over 50 projects are in the hands of the SCCFSL board who meet every month at Cooroy Library - and that’s where our junior directors come in. Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at the school each June, Penny, Daniel and Stewart were made aware of a program where they could attend

On-site prestart meeting with (left to right) Lex Toth, Project Engineer and Roberts Bros. team, John, David and Steve A STRONG level of interest and buoyant regional housing market heralds an exciting future for residents of Cooroy’s newest housing estate Erindale Park on Lake Macdonald Drive. Stage 2 of Valkev Pty

Ltd flagship development, Erindale Park, gets underway this month, as the stunning 32 lot parkland estate starts to take shape. Project developers Kev and Val Kelly said the estate would boast both active and passive

playgrounds in 6 to 7 acres of open space that would bring the community together. “About half of the property will be open space and parkland with the meandering creek casually winding its

way from Lake Macdonald Drive north into the State Forest,” Kev Kelly said. “Walking paths and bikeways will provide easy access to the neighbouring urban developments, connecting Lake Macdonald Drive through the park to Blue Wren Court, Masonry Drive in the adjacent Cordwood Estate and Wilgee Court on the eastern boundary.” Wythes Real Estate Representative Phil Hargrave said a key component of the estate’s success was the developers’ commitment to quality. “The provision of level lots is a big factor at Erindale Park. Valkev instructed the project engineers, Callaghan and Toth, to design each lot with a flat building site, and specified that soil compaction be maximised to minimise the cost of foundations to just a few thousand dollars,”

Mr Hargrave said. “Millions of dollars in sales in the Noosa region in recent weeks has really helped revive confidence in the local real estate market and interest in Cooroy continues to grow.” Stage 1 comprises four lots ranging in size from 600sqm with 20m frontages onto Lake Macdonald Drive and are priced from $185,000. The prestart meeting for Stage 2 was held onsite on Monday 24th February with Council Technical Officer, Leigh Crichton, Project Engineer, Lex Toth, and Civil Contractors, Roberts Bros. The construction contract is 10-weeks and the lots should have registered title by midJune. For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www. erindalepark.com.au or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

Wellington goes back to school IT was great to get out to my old school, Noosa District High to have a talk to the Year 12 Legal Studies class on Tuesday Feb 18. The students are certainly up to date on what is happening in the political world and I was happy to hear that they were also following my Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ PeterWellingtonMp The visit to the school was well timed, as I had met teacher Brigid Muir’s father, at the Accountability Round Table forum at Parliament House, only the week before. The Accountability Round Table is a non-partisan group of citizens with diverse backgrounds (academics, lawyers, politicians, journalists, authors) who are gravely concerned by the current erosion of honesty and integrity in our democracy. A big thank you to Ms Muir and her students for the invitation.

Changes to libraries IF you use the Noosaville, Cooroy or Mobile Libraries, you need to read this important information about changes that will be happening to your library service. While Noosa Council has hit the ground running, fully managing the local libraries and even presenting a packed program, the final phase of separation from Sunshine Coast Libraries will occur in late March. After this time you will receive a new Noosa Library Service card when you visit one of the libraries in the Noosa Shire – Cooroy, Noosaville or the Mobile Library. You will only be able to use this card in these libraries. All membership benefits will remain the same as before – you can still borrow up to 30 items for three weeks, and you will be able to pick-up and drop off items from the Noosa Librar-

ies collection at Cooroy, Noosaville or the Mobile Library. Your existing Sunshine Coast Libraries card will still be active and you will be able to continue using it at a Sunshine Coast Council library. From late March you will only be able to drop off Noosa Libraries items to the Noosa Libraries, and Sunshine Coast Libraries items to their libraries. It is important that you check your address and mobile phone details are correct either online or when you are next at one of the libraries, to ensure that when the data is copied from Sunshine Coast Libraries at the end of March, that you and your family are transferred over as Noosa library members. For more information about changes to your libraries visit www.libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au or phone 5329 6555.

Brave Mum shaving for a cure put through so much to try and save their life or give them a better quality of life. My hair is such a small thing to give up in comparison.” As an additional thought, Aleta said she hopes her shaved head will signal a show of solidarity for the kids, teenagers and adults undergoing cancer treatment who also “stand out and get looked at” due to not having any hair.

“I understand that a lot of people right now have demanding financial situations and might find it difficult to afford to give, but even the smallest amount they can contribute will help families that are in need. I would be thrilled to raise $5,000.” Aleta admits she’ll shed some tears when the razor comes out. “I think I’ll cry a bit and feel overwhelmed with emo-

Drought assistance for Mary Valley Farmers AFTER years of loving attention, Aleta Bon’s gorgeous, reddishbrown hair falls nearly to the small of her back, but in just a couple weeks’ time it will fall all the way to the floor. The Eumundi mum of two has been thinking of shaving her head for the Leukemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure for a very long time, and has decided that 2014 will be the year she embraces the razor’s edge in support of other families who have spent far too much time in hospitals battling for their child’s life. Although her long, thick hair is one of the things she gets “recognised for,” Aleta says losing it is a small sacrifice to make compared to families who have leukaemia “thrust upon them.” “Having my head shaved is going to be a bit of a shock, but I’ll get over it and it will grow back,” she said. “It’s for a great cause so I really hope that I can raise a lot of money by doing it.” Even though the idea of shaving her head had

been planted years ago, it took a few recent visits to the local Emergency Department with her young son to reaffirm the decision. “Our youngest child is very active and has been to hospital a few times in some recent distressing experiences, and my heart has really gone out to families who have to spend a lot more time in hospital than we ever have,” Aleta said. “Our son reacts quite hysterically to needles, after a few episodes where he has needed them, and that was traumatic enough. But while in hospital we were next to children that obviously had more serious issues. “We heard a lot of screaming kids, with stressed parents, who were focused on trying to get them well and healthy, but their children were scared and didn’t understand what was happening.” “It got me thinking each time, that there are families that have to go through this every week, sometimes every day, and the parents have to watch their babies being

MEMBER for Gympie, David Gibson MP has negotiated arrangements with the government to support the concept of agisting under-utilised but already leased grazing land in the government’s Mary Valley portfolio. “A number of farmers in and around the Mary Valley region have contacted me about their concerns about the current drought like conditions and the impact it is having on reducing available feed for their livestock,” Mr Gibson said. “I have taken the matter direct to the Deputy Premier’s Department and I have been able to secure the government’s support for local farmers.” “The government recognises the seriousness of my concerns and wants affected farmers seeking assistance to know that it is opening the door to

discuss opportunities that exist,” he said. The government is willing to work with its existing long term lessees to consider if they would agree to permit short term agistment licences on the land they currently lease. Obviously any such proposals will need to be dealt with on a case by case basis and meet the terms of the Coordinator General. If local lessees are willing to help out drought affected farmers then the government will not stand in the way of these types of practical measures being taken to assist farmers in the Mary Valley. I would encourage either drought affected farmers or local lessees who are willing to help to contact my office and we can arrange further details.

dining & entertainment Awesome line-up for first Cooroy Originals

COOROY RAG ORGANISERS East Coast Originals and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce have pulled a few rabbits out of the hat to serve up a smoking line up for the first Cooroy Originals on 23 May! Matt Stillert is first up on the bill offering his unique style that ranges from soothing folk melodies, to high energy, foot stomping blues. Displaying a dynamic blend of roots music, Matt is a

dynamic live performer that engages the crowd and will get the party started. The second band, Tea Society is a Sunshine Coast band that plays a fusion of sunny indie rock with a jazzy funk vibe. Coming from different musical backgrounds and influences, from gypsy jazz to indie pop this band manages to contain the vast differences and create something truly

unique. Also on the program is In2Nation, a group of Aussie Sunny Coast lads addicted to funk, reggae, hip-hop and in their own words “all things groovy”. Their mission is to bring the funk back to the universe with their unique mix of music which has been described as a combination of Beastie Boys and Dooby Brothers with a side serving of Red Hot Chilli Peppers

and a light garnishing of The Doors. By mashing this fusion of modern musical styles, this new breed of musical interests has formed a new genre all of its own cheekily labelled ‘Junk Hop’. Headlining will be Hayden Hack Infusion with their funk, afro and psychedelic aesthetic all driven by the South African main man and guitarist, Hayden Hack and his eight-piece funk family. Essentially sharing a vibe with the likes of Fela Kuti and a 70scirca Zappa, HHI is somewhat of an experience that incorporates West African percussion, a three-piece horn section, acidy guitar and arrangements and a social commentary outlook on lyrics with a vocal range from Hack himself that spans from gravelly to falsetto. “The support from the businesses and community in Cooroy for this event has been fantastic. “We feel really welcomed and know it is going to be an

awesome event and just encourage everyone to come along,” said Marcus Pluckhahn from East Coast Originals. “We are so excited to get this event in Cooroy, it’s a real achievement and it’s going to be great for the community,” added Danielle Taylor, President of Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. Cooroy Fusion is a free family event funded through donations and raffle ticket sales and the awesome support of Cooroy Hotel, Cooroy Car Parts, Cooroy Rag and Noosa Today! As well as the awesome line-up of musicians there will be food stalls and free face painting and a great community atmosphere. One thing is for sure, this line up is an absolute not to miss! Catch them for FREE at the first Cooroy Originals in Apex Park on Sunday 23 May 2014 from 1pm to 5pm. More info get onto www.facebook.com/ CooroyOriginals

Rob Longstaff, born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, is a Berlin Soul/Pop/Blues musician. After he had for years successfully maintained the pub circuit Down Under, Rob packed his belongings and moved to Berlin, the city he now calls home. In music and in life Rob loves the challenge so he hitchhiked across three continents, visited Indian and African orphanages and hospitals, ventured to Antarctica and lastly travelled by bicycle, train and ship from Berlin to China to Australia. Rob is convinced by the idea of slow travel and wants all those suffering the stress and

security paranoia of flying to experience his idea. Rob is determined to lead by example. He wants to bring his music to the people, without wasting resources or harming the environment. His ingenious alternative package makes it fun and saves time and money. Boogaloo is Rob’s third studio album and his debut at Blackbird Music. Recorded in only three days, the plate lives from the unique combination of powerful, fresh vocals and grooving acoustic guitar playing. All tracks are onetakes, recorded with no frills and gadgets - authentic and honest. It will be an honour to have the amazing Rob Longstaff perform on his 2014 tour as Rob uses his solar electric trike and peddle power to cross as much of the globe as possible to bring awareness of alternative and sustainable means of travel. Join us at the Green Room, Imperial Hotel at Eumundi for a great night of food, music and the ever amusing Rob Longstaff as he performs and tells us of his amazing journeys. COOROY RAG

Cooroy Family Practice owner and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Vivan Dawalibi COOROY Family Practice is a 100 per cent Bulk Billing surgery, with no gap fees. This is very important to the Practice’s owner Vivian Dawalibi, who also owns the Caloundra Bulk Billing Surgery. Vivianne has strong values of love, care and share, with her mindset fully focussed on help-

ing people have access to a wide range of professional health services. She is passionate about bulk billing and supplying affordable health care to the community. This comes as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with Vivianne Dawalibis’ history. Born and raised in Su-

dan, her family was extremely overprotective with strong Christian values. Vivianne started her career with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Though her first role was a junior bookkeeper, she developed her skills and quickly climbed the lad-

der to become an Operations Officer in charge of various emergency operations in countries including Armenia, Belarus, Bangladesh and finally in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Kosovo conflict. “I was sent on a mission to support emergency operations in my home country Sudan, as well as overseas. In Sudan we were hosting over 2.5 million refugees from African countries,” Vivian explains. As acknowledgment for all her hard work, initiative, determination and compassion, she was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1981. This was a life changing accomplishment. Vivianne is adamant her strong values attract like-minded professional health providers to her surgeries, who carry the same vision and mission to serve the health needs of our community. She is happy to welcome Dr. Nadee to join the team, which include Male and Female Doctors, Practice Nurses, a Dietician, Podiatrist, Cardiac Echogram Technician,

Exercise Physiologist and a psychologist. Dr. Nadee offers great Family Health Care and brings a special interest in Women’s and Children’s Health, Men’s Health, Chronic Disease Management, Seniors Health and Preventative Health. Rarely is it purely muscular but rather a combination of joint, disc and muscle involvement. It can be as a result of many things including poor posture, long hours in front of a computer, repetitive or sudden movements, sleeping in a bad position and spinal degeneration. This can also result in headaches and even arm pain. Without proper treatment these symptoms can be long lasting and debilitating. Physiotherapy aims to maximise your

strength, stability and range of motion. Soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, heat or ice and stretches are often used. Correcting and minimising excessive curves whilst also addressing any ergonomic and postural habits that are contributing to your pain should also be looked at. Neck pain can be successfully treated with a combination of manual therapy, exercise prescription and postural re education. Don’t let neck pain dominate your day, come and see your qualified physiotherapists today at Hinteractive Physio. Phone 5442 5556 for an appointment.

Over 1 billion people around the world participated, and it was the second year that Noosa joined in this incredible and moving statement. Cr Bolton congratulated the organisers and the beautiful men and women who attended in making this a moving and memorable event, and to the “two Franks” for sharing their dance prowess in public!

health Indoor air quality affects your health

COOROY RAG

THE founder and managing director Stephen Speirs formed the SPEIRS Group Pty Ltd (SPEIRS Air Purification Systems) after nearly five years of research into systems that can provide a substantial part of the solution to the detrimental effects of poor indoor air quality (IAQ), including asthma, lung and allergy sufferers. This is because his mother, sisters, daughter and partner all suffered from asthma and allergens, sometimes with severe attacks and he wanted to find a product that could help make life a little more comfortable while they were indoors along with the many others who suffer in the same way. During the research he came across an air purification system that had four significant filters that would significantly capture, reduce, stop and eliminate indoor air pollutants. Obtaining samples and having been provided with proof of quality, the samples were then tested in a home and office environment and were a huge success in cleaning the small dust, pollen, pet dander, mould, fungi, odours, toxins, chemicals, bacteria particles etc, pollutants from outside such as smog, industrial and car fumes coming inside that float about, sometimes invisible to the human eye. These carefully chosen products are the foundation of the SPEIRS Group Pty Ltd. These products are deemed to be the next evolution in helping people of all ages improve, develop and maintain their health and wellbeing. After all the air we breathe is the life we live. Stephen said, “We are passionate about helping people breathe clean indoor air for a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment. We believe and it has been proven that are amazing, high performing four filter air purification systems get rid of the many horrible indoor pollutants that we all breathe

in everyday, pollutants that have considerable negative impact on both our health and wellbeing. Over 80% of people with asthma also suffer from allergies. Allergies can be a key trigger to setting off asthma from the likes of dust, pollen (hay fever), floating pollutants that we breathe in when we sleep, chemicals/toxins from cleaning products, pet dander etc. Cleaning the indoor you breathe is an important factor in making asthma suffers life a lot more comfortable and healthier; along with improving our general health & wellbeing. http://www.speirsgroup.com.au/ We can spend up to 90% of our time indoors and 50% of all illnesses are caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air – “World Health Organisation” The company has it’s headquarters based in Gympie, SE Queensland and their amazing systems are now all over Australia and beyond helping people of all ages and capabilities breathe clean indoor air for a healthier and more comfortable environment both at home and in the work place. Formed in November 2012 and launched in January 2013 the company is going from strength to strength with ambitious growth planned for 2014. COOROY RAG

MAKE a Difference Health & Fitness are taking part in the Federal Government’s Healthy Communities Initiative by providing the Lift for Life® program to Cooroy and surrounds, with the aim of tackling chronic disease especially type 2 diabetes as well as heart dis-

ease and osteoporosis. According to the Australian Diabetes Council, in Australia, one person is diagnosed with diabetes every seven minutes. “With the incidence of type 2 diabetes on the increase at such a rapid rate, we want to offer a program to our community that

would help prevent, manage or even reverse this condition and some other chronic diseases,” says Lee Smith of Make A Difference Health & Fitness. “Being part of this initiative allows us to offer the program at a very low cost, which makes it very affordable and accessible to a

much broader range of the community.” “We are really excited to be offering this program to our community. It’s a great starting point for so many people.” The aim of the Lift for Life® program is to make exercise easy and enjoyable for participants while they work toward their health and fitness goals. The program is based on medical research developed by researchers at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in response to the rising rates of chronic disease. The program is perfect for people of all ages and fitness levels including those that haven’t exercised in a while, and even those who may never have exercised before. “Make A Difference Health & Fitness is playing a vital role in improving the health of their community by offering this evidence based

strength training program,” said Lauretta Stace, Chief Executive Officer of Fitness Australia. Fitness Australia is funded by the Australian Government’s Healthy Communities Initiative to deliver Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute’s Lift for Life® program through local fitness businesses. “This Government funded initiative allows fitness businesses to make exercise more accessible to the wider community, including those experiencing disadvantage, helping to improve quality-of-life.” The benefits of strength training can be enjoyed by everybody regardless of their fitness level, body type and age. Local teacher completes 25,000 spins

EARLY Sunday morning February 9th, Kellijo Leslie set out with 100 other riders to cycle from Geelong to Warnambool along the Great Ocean Road in

Victoria over three days. Not just a ride for the love of cycling, but for a notable cause - to raise awareness and funds for charities who help children in poverty.

25000spins was created by Craig Shipton, a social entrepreneur who had a vision to make a difference for children in poverty across the world, by staging ‘Adventures with Heart’. The inaugural event was held in 2009 when he and a small group of cyclists rode from London to Athens. Since then over $700K has been raised for charity via committed and enthusiastic cyclists in events staged in Australia and overseas. Kelli-jo, a secondary teacher from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy signed up for the recent Great Ocean Road Challenge when her friend who participated in 2013, encouraged her to give it a try.

A fairly new enthusiast for triathlons and in particular cycling, Kelli-jo trained regularly in the lead up to the event. Despite her preparation, the first day proved tough going. “Everyone struggled in the last 20 kilometers of the first day”, says Kelli-jo “we had really strong head winds pushing against us which made things difficult - we even had to pedal hard going downhill”. But the last two days provided better conditions and all the riders finished the course safely. For Kelli-jo there is satisfaction in the physical and mental achievement of the course, but there is also a deep gratitude for the money donated by

friends and family enabling her to raise more than $2500 for Adventist Development and Relief Agency. “I am blessed to have had such great support for my ride and my chosen charity - some of the donations really amazed me”. Overall more than $197K has been raised by the group of riders in this event. Kelli-jo was more than enthusiastic when asked if she would do it again “Yes, definitely” she said, adding that she is considering one of the international locations where the events are held. To learn more about the philosophy behind 25000spins or to get involved, visit www.25000spins.com

Following on from his success at Regional and State Relays and winning first place in the 70m Dash at the 2013 Noosa Gift, Jacob has now qualified to compete in the U17 Boys 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump at the State Championships in Cairns. “The support of the coaching team and committee at Little Athletics Noosa has given me the encouragement to continue training and competing,” said Jacob. Jordan Csabi, alongside Rosie Stevenson, were elected Centre Captains for the 2013-2014 season, and have proven to be great role models for Little Athletics Noosa’s younger members. The Tewantin teenager has only been competing in athletics since the age of 14 and has never looked back. He made

Rosie Stevenson began squad training and competing in Under 15s at Little Athletics Noosa in 2011. She has now qualified to compete in the U17 Girls 100m and 200m sprint races at this year’s State Championships. Rosie believes she could not have achieved what she has done without the support of Little Athletics Noosa’s committee, volunteers and coaches, and also acknowledges the support

of her friends and family who have been there for her through everything. “I intend to keep on going with athletics, as it is not only my favourite sport, it’s a passion of mine,” said Rosie. Jacob, Rosie and Jordan all plan to continue training and competing next season as part of Noosa Athletics, the senior athletics branch of Little Athletics Noosa, open to athletes 17 years and older.
