So much to see and do at Cooroy Fusion Festival!

THERE is so much to see and do at the Cooroy Fusion Festival on Saturday 13 May that you had best put aside the whole day if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun! Spreading all the way down the main street, the popular hinterland festival attracts over 10,000 people each year and the one of the things that sets it apart from others is the abundance of FREE activities on offer! The top of town hosts beautiful blooms in the CWA Hall with Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society’s annual show with many varieties of orchids on display and for sale for Mother’s Day. Next on the walk through town is the Butter Factory Arts Centre hosting three exhibitions including the Australian Body Art Festival’s Photo Exhibition and an inflatable selfie booth combined with a Mother’s Day card making workshop. In the Pottery area out the back there is a pottery throw down where you can try your hand on a potter’s wheel. There is also body art, face painting and a chainsaw artist at the front of the Butter Factory and an animal farm and jumping castle on the Library roof. In the Library you can meet local authors, discover virtual reality, watch tai chi demonstrations, play in the LEGO lounge, get acquainted with robotics, and get involved in a hip hop workshop and more! In the main festival area, there are fantastic stalls with amazing local artisans, delectable food, community groups and sponsors. Entertainment will be pumping all day long in the Bendigo Bank Entertainment Marquee with the likes of the High School bands, Ian Hawkins, Sambazzy, Cherry Ripes, Claptomaniacs and Annie J & Fusion. You’ll also be able to see the Greenwood Grove Geckoes Wildlife Experience on the stage in the marquee and get up close and personal with all sorts of critters. The perfect spot to grab a cold beverage and listen to some tunes while you rest your feet is in the

Cooroy RSL’s Picked Possum Bar. This lush green space is also where you will find the first ever Queensland experience of Dart Ball, a combination of darts with either soccer, tennis or rugby balls. The team from Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland will be there, handing out prizes for those who show their spectacular kicking, throwing or hitting skills! The Cooroy Supa IGA Tastes of the Hinterland is also located in the same area with local food producers giving the opportunity to taste test a great selection of products. Just across the creek you can catch the Cooroora Woodworkers annual show with competitions and demonstrations and Cooroy Camphor Laurel will have their workshop and gallery open with a few extra surprises including wood carving by Shane Christensen, Simmental cattle, camels, native bees and a pig or two! Cooroy Fusion Festival is run by the Cooroy Future Group Inc and would not be possible without the support from festival partners, Noosa Council and Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, and the sponsorship of Greenwood Grove, Cooroy Supa IGA, Raine & Horne, Club Cooroy RSL, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Noosa, Sutton’s Cleaning Service, John Madill Toyota, Noosa Today, Noosa Beverages, Gelignite Jacks, Fiona Winter Realty, Mower & ATV, Cartwrights Lawyers, Cooroy Hotel, Cooroy Service Centre RACQ, Palm Lake Resort, Chapmans Auto Repairs, McDermott Aviation, Cooroy Camphor Laurel, Max Watterson & Associates, Sunsign Coast and Firefly Solutions. The annual Cooroora Wood & Craft Show now in it’s 28th year is presented by the Cooroora Woodworkers club. The show helps to keep alive the ancient crafts of woodwork and the recycling of timber into useful objects. The venue is the Cooroora Woodworkers Club in the Lower Mill Precinct in Cooroy on Friday May 12th and Saturday May 13th. Entrance is just $2pp and under 16 yrs are free. Craftsmen and craftswomen from regional clubs and schools have put weeks and often months of hard work into creating their masterpieces for the competitions. These will be on display and visitors will be truly amazed by what can be done with a basic piece of timber. You will be able to cast your vote for the best work. Many handcrafted items will be available for purchase – great gifts for Mother’s Day! Try your luck with a $2 ticket in the raffle. The first prize is a traditional Victorian rocking horse valued at $4000. Plus there are hand made jewellery boxes for 2nd and 3rd prizes. Visitors will also be able to see woodworking demonstrations such as carving, turning and scrollsaw work. One of the popular attractions is always the saw milling team cutting logs of Camphor Laurel and Silky Oak. The slabs green off the saw are eagerly sought for making table and bar tops. In addition seasoned slabs, boards and lumber of various species will be also available for purchase. The Cooroora Woodworkers club has over 100 members both male and female. The extensive workshop, (called The Kilns because it was previously the drying kilns of a woodmilling business) is well fitted out with hand tools and machinery. Beginners have the opportunity of tuition and can use the equipment after induction. If you have an urge to do some woodwork don’t miss this show. Membership applications are available and the annual fee is very moderate.

The Cooroy Camphor Laurel at Fusion Festival THE Cooroy Camphor Laurel members will be hosting, the Cruisey Camel Rides with Naipunya and Spiderman, Chain Saw Carving by Shane Christensen, a sausage sizzle and Native Bee Display by Peter Valinski who will be selling solitary bee motels. A highlight of the displays will be Audrey-Rose Torrielli’s multi award winning champion Simmental Cattle from Hidden Valley Stud at Conondale. These magnificent cattle have been shown throughout S.E. Queensland and won junior, senior and grand champion. They have featured in advertising the Kenilworth Rodeo with local police riding them. You can have your picture taken with these beautiful bovines too. Our Woodcraft Gallery will be open to the public with a wide variety of handcrafted products for sale. See you there.

Body Art Through the Lens Exhibition

Photo by Monique Vecchio THE 2017 Australian Body Art Festival was a ‘Wonderland’ of colour, activity and amazing art and it was all captured by 20 photographers whose work will be on display at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre from 3 May to 14 May. “The festival is a huge at-

traction for photographers and as part of the festival we have a photographic competition which is limited to 20 photographers who get an access all areas pass to capture all the fun of the two-day festival,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor. “The living artworks

were spectacular in themselves, but the photographers have captured some truly beautiful photos.” The official opening and award ceremony for the photographic competition and exhibition is on Saturday 6 May at 1pm at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre in Maple Street, Cooroy. It’s a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. The colourful community arts event drew approximately 7000 spectators to watch some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers create and parade their masterpieces. The 2017 Australian Body Art Festival was a new festival to Cooroy and it was run as a community event by a team of over 100 volunteers funded through donations, crowd funding and support from local businesses. If you missed the fun or just want to relive it, make sure you come to the photo exhibition of the photographic competitors at the Butter Factory Arts Centre from 3 May to 16 May with the official launch and prize giving ceremony on Saturday 6 May at 1pm. Photos will also be avail-

able for purchase. Visit the website www.australianbodyart.com.au or Facebook @Australian BodyArtFestival for more information and photos. Full steam ahead for Cooroy’s grand old lady COOROY’S hall is now back in community hands after the Noosa Council voted last week to lease the hall to the Cooroy Memorial Hall Association Inc. for five years. The CMHA intends to begin work immediately on the renovation of the hall. CMHA President Mr Paul Kluck said the cost of the repairs to the hall would be met by community fundraising, donations of money and labour, and grants. “Our committee estimated that the cost to repair and renovate the

hall will be $384,000,” Mr Kluck said. “ That will see the roof structure repaired, fire and safety regulations met, upgraded toilets and kitchen, new paintwork and a new weather protected entry.” Noosa Council have agreed to match any community raised funds and in-kind labour to a capped amount of $192,000,” Mr Kluck said. The CMHA will now begin fundraising efforts and would ask the community for support, he said. Mr Kluck said that

although Bendigo Bank had pledged to donate $100,000 towards the renovation costs a few years ago, the offer had been conditional upon receiving federal funding via a grant. “Unfortunately, that grant didn’t materialise,” Mr Kluck said. Mayor Tony Wellington said Council was pleased to partner with the newlyformed community association to preserve the historic hall. “Cooroy Memorial Hall is in good hands. There is no shortage of valuable skills among the Cooroy Memorial Hall Associa-

community activity,” the Mayor said. The community built Cooroy Memorial Hall in 1926 in memory of soldiers killed in the Great War. It closed in 2012 due to safety concerns. The CMHA is currently accepting offers of assistance and donations from the community. Mr Kluck said any person who would like to help the CMHA to reopen the hall should contact CMHA secretary Louise Jorgensen by email at secretarycmha @outlook.com or leave a message on the Committee’s Facebook page.

tion’s members, who include an architect, a builder and a structural engineer,” he said. “I congratulate the Cooroy community. They’ve rallied to the cause and taken on significant responsibility to make this happen. There can be no questioning the passion of many Cooroy residents for this historic structure. “The hall’s deterioration was not a problem of Council’s making, but we are pleased to be able to partner with the community to restore the building and see it once again become a hub of

Stop the world!! When I was young, I read an old Chinese curse, (I remember others quite a lot worse), But it said “may you live in interesting times”, No ifs, no buts, no explanatory rhymes. I lived in those interesting times, I won’t argue about that, And was pretty busy, probably a bit of a brat! But when I became of age, the depression and war appeared, The “interesting” times really appeared, and the good times disappeared. I’m not attracted by the modern world, and its worrying behaviour, Nor our lovely country, and its untidy political flavour. The world seems to be heading for a rudderless disaster by anybody’s standards, It’s time for someone to be a bit heavy handed. Whole nations are hungry, they’re ill, they’re dirt poor, Their children are starving, what do they understand about war? Trump has had his hundred days, it seems cause for celebration, While North Korea has staged another cheeky missile demonstration. I’m sick of it all, I think I’ve had enough, As someone said in the movie “Stop The World I Want To Get Off!”.

Age does not protect you from love, but love to a certain extent will protect you from age. Jim Dunstan

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Parking Dangers I WOULD like to bring to attention the dangers of parking outside the food outlets, Pizza and Asian, adjacent the BP in Cedar Street Cooroy. I am no wowser and know that cheating the parking cop is a favorite Australian pass time. This is not the place to play that game. Over the past several weeks I have seen 2 very near misses, and I do not pass that way in the early evening all that often. So many more close calls have undoubtedly occurred. The vast majority of vehicles park on the cleared verge opposite the stores; hence when an excited hungry youngster rushes out with their order, eager to get home and get stuck into dinner, crossing that road with safety is not in the forefront of their mind. When vehicles “park” or stop and get another family member to duck in and pick up their order, they blind any other traffic from being able to see those same kids rushing out to join their parents on the opposite side of the road. They just appear from behind the illegally parked vehicle, leaving the through traffic car with zero reaction time. Just like kids running out from behind a bus. Come on Cooroy these are our kids, we can do better than this. The youngster that is hit will probably go to school with one of your kids. Rotten feeling isn’t it. The cars that park against the yellow line marking may not be the ones to knock, injure or kill one of our kids, a kid really just being a kid, but they will certainly be responsible for the tragedy. Interest Rate Risk Management for Businesses Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank Running a business inevitably requires a certain level of debt, and the loan repayments to service this debt are likely to be a significant part of your cost structure. Adverse movements in interest rates can have a serious impact on your bottom line. To offset this risk, you can fix your rate so your repayments become more stable each month. Additionally, subject to borrowing minimums, there are other products available to alleviate this risk. Some of these are: • Interest Rate Swaps • Forward Start Option • Deferred Start Fixed Rate • Interest Rate Caps & Collars An economical way to reduce your exposure to movements in interest rates is to take out an Interest Rate Collar. A Collar enables you to set the maximum and minimum interest rate payable on a floating rate borrowing. When a borrower purchases a Cap they continue to receive the full benefit of any variable rate decreases on your loan, at each rollover date. A Collar is a combination of an Interest Rate Cap (“Cap”) and an Interest Rate Floor (“Floor”). Taking out a Collar ensures the interest rate on the borrower’s variable loan will only float within the band set by the Cap and Floor rates. This provides protection against interest rate increases

above the Cap rate but also means that the borrower forgoes the benefit of any decreases below the Floor rate, at each rollover date. The purpose of adding the Floor is to reduce the cost in comparison to buying a Cap only. The premium payable to purchase the Collar depends on several factors including the loan amount, Cap and Floor rates relative to current market rates, fixed rate term, repayment frequency and interest rate volatility. It is possible to set a Cap and Floor combination to produce a zero cost collar. If you have any questions about your business or your banking, please contact me on 5447 7131 (Cooroy), 5485 1786 (Pomona). You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au.

Hinterland kerbside rubbish collection THE kerbside rubbish collection for the hinterland (including Cooroy, Pomona, Kin Kin and Cooran) commences the week beginning May 22. Place items on the footpath edge (not in the gutter) on Sunday afternoon, the day before. This year 3 different trucks will collect your

waste. Please segregate items into 3 piles: Useful items easily repaired for reuse; metal items for recycling; other rubbish. Garden waste will not be collected this year. Mattress collection must be arranged through Cleanaway by phoning 13 1339 the week prior to collection.

What financial records do I need to keep? Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management* Ever feel like you’re drowning in a sea of paper? Tame the paperwork today and reap the rewards tomorrow. Life can be complicated enough without all the administrative paperwork that often accompanies it. This is particularly true when it comes to your personal finances. If stacks of old bank statements, utility bills, receipts, insurance and superannuation documents mean you can’t see the trees for the paper, de-clutter, simplify your finances and improve your quality of life today. Why simplify? There are many good reasons to pare back on your financial record-keeping, including: Living in smaller dwellings means we have less space to store documents; Saves time by making it easier to find what you need; Helps your loved ones find relevant documents easily should something happen to you; In the event of a home emergency, you can quickly find important documents you may want to take; Makes your life easier at tax time. When it comes to identifying the documents you need to keep, consid-

ering your legal obligations is a good place to start. The first of these is your annual tax return. In order to complete your tax return you’ll need documentary evidence of: all payments you’ve received, such as wages, interest, dividends and rental income; any expenses related to income received, such as work-related expenses or rental repairs; the sale or purchase of assets, such as property or shares; donations, contributions or gifts to charities; private health insurance cover; medical expenses, both your own and those of any dependents. You need to keep these documents for five years after you lodge your tax return in case you’re asked to substantiate your claims, and it’s also a good idea to keep your notice of tax assessments for five years. However, if you run a small business, the document requirements and timeframes differ - find out more at the Australian Tax Office (ATO). The second category of documents are those related to property such as: property deeds; home loan documents; renovation approvals; warranties re-

lating to work undertaken. Other documents to keep include: wills; tax file numbers; powers of attorney; birth certificates; death certificates; marriage certificates; immunisation records; passports; current insurance policies, such as your life, home and contents, and motor insurance; your most recent superannuation statement; any personal loan documents; vehicle registration; vehicle service history; business registrations; qualifications documents. What you can throw away There are some documents you can toss, and as

a rule, once a document has been replaced by a newer version, it’s safe to dispose of the older copy. There’s also no need to hang onto credit card receipts once you’ve reconciled them against your bank statements, unless they’re needed for warranties. Credit card and bank statements should be retained for a year, while other household paperwork, such as utility bills, can be thrown away once paid, unless you need a copy for rental applications or you want to keep them to compare your usage over time.

The exception to these rules is if the documents are required for tax purposes. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Disaster-ready message NOOSA Council has teamed up with Red Cross to boost Noosa’s resilience to disasters. Council and Red Cross will attend the Cooroy Fusion Festival on May 13 to distribute RediPlan, a free disaster readiness guide to help residents prepare for emergencies. Noosa Mayor and Chair of Noosa Local Disaster Management Group, Tony Wellington, says it’s important all residents are prepared for natural disasters. “Thankfully, Tropical Cyclone Debbie

had a relatively minimal impact on Noosa, particularly when compared to communities to the north and south. However it was a salient reminder that Noosa is vulnerable to cyclones and other disaster events,” he said. “Preparedness is the key to personal safety. Residents need to take some responsibility for the safety of themselves and their property, and RediPlan provides useful guidelines to follow. Council’s aim is to help build a safe and resilient community,” the Mayor said.

Our history has a new home

The opening of the Cooroy Noosa Genealogical Society and Historical Research Group Heritage Centre

Bendigo Bank's Geoff Edwards pictured outside the new Heritage Centre in Cooroy with Julie Kinloch and Bev Warner

The Heritage Centre working Group cutting the cake at the official opening

THE Cooroy Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group have been looking for a home to call their own for many years. On May 2, hundreds gathered in Cooroy to celebrate the end of that search. Their ever-expanding collection of valuable local and family history resources will now be available for many locals who may be looking for answers to their questions now and for years to come. At the opening, group president Bev Warner made a heartfelt speech to thank her committee and so many whose tireless work helped get them to the finish line. She also remembered many who were not there to celebrate the big day. Mayor Tony Wellington recalled the years of those who never gave up on the dream of the new Heritage Centre while the different levels of government worked with the group to identify a suitable parcel of land. In mid-2013, a block of land next to the SES on Emerald Street became available and now hosts the building we will all enjoy. Concept plans, work with local surveyor, Max Watterson and Deanne Kinloch-Passenger meant the group successfully achieved a material change of use for the land. Fundraising efforts then included regular sausage sizzles, Homestyle Bake pie drives, pot luck lunches, raffles, garage and plant sales and even selling home-made jams. Small grants over time were attained from the Noosa Shire Council, state and federal governments, the Department of Social Security, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Tewantin Noosa RSL, Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and Cooroy Rag. Generous donations from past and present members and members of the community were also received. With development plans approved, work

began in September, 2016 and the building was completed on December 23, 2016. Builder, Harry Kirk and a team of concreters, carpenters, electricians and plumbers were applauded at the launch, along with architect, Jacques Ritief, Stephan Prystupa from TOD Engineering and Design, and building certifier, Don Greghan. Electrician Jim Bissett, Carter Connections who came at very short notice to prepare the phone connection for Telstra, Noosa Council’s Alan Hazell, Barry Postle, Hayley Jamieson, Paul Bone and Sam Raven of Interface, were also singled out for thanks. Tradelink, Haymans Electrical and Simply Cool Air Conditioning, Cottee Parker Architects Brisbane, cabinet maker Rob Warner all got a cheer, along with and Alan Warner his amazing work, right down to his creation of the garden beds at the front of the centre with plants donated by the Kinloch families and Lynne Mills. Just before life members Win Wynn and Betty Sutton cut the ribbon to the new Heritage Centre, the group’s Building Committee of Julie, Margaret, Georgina, Helga, Ros, Betty and Bev were heralded as their six year journey ended. Inside, the new Heritage Centre is a triumph and it embodies the dreams and hard work of so many locals. Perhaps it’s the first line from Betty Sutton’s book Echoes of the Past that says it best: “By preserving memories of long term residents, the community is brought to life”. For more information about the Heritage Centre go to www.genealogynoosa.org.au. You can become a member of the Cooroy Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group by emailing info@genealogy-noosa.org.au or calling 5442 5570. AN art exhibition by Trevor Purvis will be held at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy from 20th May to 24th June. This is an exhibition of recent and retrospective paintings by an artist who has drawn his inspiration for the Australian landscape from a background of two very different worlds. It is a collection of the best paintings that I have done while living in both the craziness of a large city and the serenity of the Noosa hinterland. The THEN gallery is a manifestation of a city person’s first experience of travelling into Central, Northern and Western Australia. images that were almost too much to absorb because of their immensity. Hence the large, imposing, loosely painted canvases. HERE: After building my home and studio in the Noosa Hinterland, I started to see detail in the outback country. Like many people who have moved to the Sunshine Coast, it took a lot of courage to make the big change and leave our family, friends, business and our comfort zone. Our time was right. Former Parramatta NRL player and Personal Trainer Rod Collins has opened Silver Fitness Studio at Silver Horse Park – Cooroy. “So there I was looking at the sunrise from my fitness studio over the beautiful Warriewood Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, thinking … can I ever get tired of this view and the business I had created over the past 15 years,” says Rod. “So many wonderful clients have become great friends, business was booming and I had a lifestyle that was almost perfect.” Fast forward 12 months and you’ll find Rod Collins opening his new purpose built health and fitness studio at Silver Horse Park - Cooroy. “It was simply, time for a change. I was in my comfort zone and needed a new challenge,” says Rod. “My eldest daughter Grace was about to begin school, my wife Sally needed some land to continue her Horse Riding School and Sydney was becoming too big for us all. “Silver Horse Park ticked all the boxes for us to have the courage to make the BIG change and move to the Sunshine Coast. We have quickly fallen in love with our 6 acre property and the wonderful town and community of Cooroy. It feels right!” Rod has now completed his dream purpose built

PILATES is one of the most popular forms of exercise worldwide. It is a mind-body conditioning exercise program that utilises a variety of different exercises to improve core muscle awareness and strength as well as posture, balance and flexibility. Pilates classes are taught by a variety of different instructors in various locations. A lot of Pilates classes are taught in fitness centres by fitness instructors and may not be specifically targeted to different populations or injuries/physical limitations. Clinical Pilates combines traditional Pilates exercises with the knowledge and skills of a physiotherapist (or other suitably qualified health professional). This enables the physiotherapist to specifically choose, modify or adjust exercises that meet an individual’s needs based on careful observation and clinical assessment. The specific choice of exercises can be the difference between an exercise program that is effective and one that is not or has a potential for increased injury risk. Clinical Pilates teaches body awareness, optimal posture and movement patterns, flexibility, improved balance and reaction time as well as improved local and global muscle strength.

At Hinteractive Physio, we offer clinical Pilates in either a mat or equipment (Pilates reformer machine) based setting. Clinical Pilates is generally suitable for most people, however those who find it difficult to get on and off the ground, may prefer the Pilates equipment classes. Classes run for just under 60 minutes and if clinically required for injury or condition management may be claimed through your health fund. You will need to make an appointment with a physiotherapist for a Pilates assessment. During this assessment, the physiotherapist will take a history of current and past conditions, assess your physical limitations or requirements for optimal functioning, assess your core muscle activation and control levels, and teach you the basic terms and positions that you will require for your Pilates program. This initial Pilates assessment is claimable through your private health insurance. If you have any questions regarding clinical Pilates or if it may be of benefit to you, please contact our friendly staff on 5442 5556 or drop in to the clinic at 3/11 Garnet Street Cooroy. Alternatively, a current timetable and class information is available on our website: www.hinteractivephysio.com.au

Chronic Back Pain? Help is at Hand

Twilight sedation – get your dentistry done while you sleep. Call for more information

SPINAL Health Week is a health initiative of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia and as part of this year’s campaign, Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor) from Life Enhancing Chiropractic is encouraging Cooroy residents to seek help for chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is a national issue. One in six Australians suffer from the physical and psychological effects of chronic back problems – that’s an estimated 3.7 million people suffering. “The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare defines chronic back pain as a health condition that lasts for three months or longer,” says Dr Roache (Chiropractor). A sedentary lifestyle and poor posture are risk factors for chronic back pain. The good news is it’s never too late to improve spinal health. “Simple measures such as incorporating walking into your daily routine can improve chronic back pain symptoms. Walking keeps the spine active and mobile. Improving posture can also help

to relieve strain on the spine and improve circulation,” Dr Roache said. Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system without the use of surgery or drugs. Australian chiropractors are five-year university trained healthcare professionals, regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and must complete mandatory continuing professional development. For chronic back problems, chiropractors use a variety of treatments such as spinal manipulation or manual therapies. Working with other healthcare providers where needed, chiropractors also offer advice on self-management through exercise and lifestyle changes. To promote Spinal Health Week (22-28 May), Life Enhancing Chiropractic is offering complimentary, obligation free Spinal Health Assessments to allow you to gain more information about your spine and posture. Phone Life Enhancing Chiropractic on 5472 0808.

Put your heart into it NOOSA Council is celebrated Heart Week by promoting Walking Groups in Tewantin and Pomona and providing first aid training for 60 hardworking local volunteers. Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin said Council invited community groups to nominate two volunteers each to complete a day’s First Aid Training during Heart Week (30 April to 6 May). “The response was overwhelming,” Ms Hamblin said. “We’re thrilled about how excited the community groups were to get the chance to take part in this training.” “We put out an Expression of Interest and we had a huge response,” she said. “It’s great to have volunteers of community groups trained up just in case an emergency occurs at an event. The more first-aid-trained people we have in the community, the safer it is.” Council is also encouraging people to join a local walking group to keep their hearts healthy. Currently there are two well-established groups in Tewantin and Pomona. “The Pomona Pacers have been getting together to walk regularly for seven years. They now have such a social program that walking becomes more than just a stroll in the park,” Ms Hamblin said. “They walk Monday to Friday at 7am from Pomona Community House. After Wednesday’s walk they enjoy a social coffee. They even have a ‘Moon Walk’, with a walk and dinner on the Wednesday evening closest to the full moon.” The Tewantin Tickers meet at 6.30am Mondays and Thursdays at Noosa Marina for a 5km walk along the Noosa River. Heart Week is an initiative of the Heart Foundation to promote good heart health. To find out more about Heart Week or to start a walking group visit www.heartfoundation.org.au. To find out more about Pomona Pacers call Leonie on 0409 628 646 or for the Tewantin Tickers call Janet on 1300 362 787.

Little Seed in the Botanical Gardens

Tallow Montague and Jacqueline Elley as Romeo & Juliet This May the Anywhere Theatre festival opens in Queensland. The concept being that theatre can take place anywhere and in this case anywhere BUT a traditional theatre. On the afternoons of May 20 and 21, Little Seed Theatre

Company will take part in this National festival; utilising a most spectacular stage: the Noosa Botanical Gardens Amphitheatre to present Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with the climax arriving close to sunset.

Little Seed has gathered a reputation for entertaining shows that enthral the audience, in 2016 performing “Peter Pan: The Panto,” and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the j, and “Puss in Boots, A Pantomime,” this January. However, Johanna is excited to be taking Little Seed back to Cooroy. Little Seed started with classes in the hinterland: at various times in the Cooroy Library, Butterfactory, Anglican Church and Eumundi Arts Building, with many hinterand students now travelling to the Little Seed Studio in Sunshine Beach. Johanna explains, Little Seed engages with familes all over the Sunshine Coast and its special to be taking this show away from the usual theatre venues into the most spectacular performance space that Noosa has to offer, the Botanical Garden’s Amphitheatre on the shores of Lake McDonald.’ Whilst there are many modern takes on this classic, this one aims to recreate the experience of the Shakespearian players. At a recent rehearsal,

Johanna instructed to the cast, “Go back to the text, what does it say, Shakespeare is the expert, what does he mean? - Let’s communcate that to the audience.” The casting too is very authentic. As per the text Juliet, a thirteen year old is played by Jacqueline Elley (13). However, its Romeo where the casting strikes real interest. Seventeen year old Tallow Montague, plays Romeo Montague and carries the story and Juliet along with him with a forceful tenderness that empowers the cast. A force of his own, winner of the Sunshine Coast Youth Theatre Best actor 2016 and Brisbane Youth theatre Festival Best actor in a comedy, Harper Ramsey plays Mercutio, along with a cast of approximately forty this ‘Romeo and Juliet’ will be one to remember. Directed by Johanna Wallace. The Amphitheatre, Noosa Botanical Gardens, Lake McDin Drive. Cooroy. Saturday May 20 - Sunday May 21 - shows commence at 2.30pm Tickets are available from www.anywheretheatre.com Adults $25 Concession $20

dining & entertainment Great line up set for the Cooroy Originals THERE’S a great line up at the Cooroy Originals for May 28. Kicking off at 12 midday with a busker, food stalls and market stalls and finishing at 5pm after rocker Sabrina Lawrie takes to the stage. Sabrina Lawrie and the Hunting Party are our headline band from Brisbane. Sabrina creates a mixture of dark pop, brooding stoner rock and psychedelia, all of it topped by a voice that has no right to explode from such a tiny frame. Her shape-shifting songs, which rarely follow conventional structures, are by turns aggressive and restrained, mind-bendingly strange, and often eerily

beautiful and her guitar playing, drops many of her peers to their knees. The event will also showcase Town, formerly known as “The Great Unwashed”. This local Sunshine Coast act have had a small legion of followers, and with little effort have established a local fan base, playing in boutique cafes around the region. Originally a 4 piece with added strings, the boys of Town, found a tighter sound in the form of a trio, keys, bass, and percussion. The perfect formula for what is now known as alternative folk. What is alt folk? While folk often retains the gentle appeal, alternative folk combines acoustic sounds and a strong singer-

Sabrina Lawrie songwriter bent with a more energetic, aggressive sound. So get along to Apex Park and support this great free music event.

Country lifestyle just minutes from town Bed 4; Bath 2; Car 2; 6.37 acres Price: $635,000. Do you daydream about a peaceful country lifestyle that’s just minutes from town? Somewhere you can afford - and perhaps transform - with a little imagination, into a piece of paradise? If so, take a good look at 166 Nandroya Road, Cooroy. This quietly understated property of 6.37 acres is council-registered as a forestry farm yet there’s not a single pine tree in sight! Instead, it features a palm tree-lined drive, a large grassed area that was once used as an equestrian ring, a single storey, cream brick house built in 1985 and a remarkable plantation of 740 trees of hard and soft wood species. These tall timbers (ideal for telegraph poles and cabinetry) were planted by the current owners 15 years ago and are now nearing maturity offering the possibility of future income. The house, a fourbedroom, two bathroom home wrapped on two sides by a deep, breezy

verandah and boasting garden views and an inground pool, can be enjoyed today and easily updated at your leisure. Its carpeted and tiled interior offers the relaxed flow of open plan living/ dining (and gathering around the kitchen) while sliding security and glass doors lead out to a large paved, undercover entertaining area beside the pool. The four bedrooms (or three plus office) have

good separation between the main and guest bedrooms. The master features a WIR, ensuite and access to both the pool and an internal courtyard. The bedrooms comprise a double, a twin and a single room or study, all with fans. There is a family bathroom, separate WC and laundry as well as an extra studio/sewing room/storeroom. A large powered shed, converted from three

stables, serves the property and there is ample water, including 72,000 litres in rainwater tanks, a drinkable bore and dam. You may even consider installing a pony on the lawn. Best of all, there is abundant birdlife and the thriving towns of Cooroy and Eumundi are within 5 minutes drive away. Contact Kess Prior, 0404 344 399 Hinternoosa.com.au, 5447 7000.

COOROY RAG Storybook cottage 5 minutes from Cooroy

Bed 3; Bath 1; Car 4; 4.26ha Price: $830,000. In a secret glade at the end of a private lane, just 5 minutes from the bustling town of Cooroy, lies this storybook cottage perched above a delightful dam. As you enter the property, you will be astonished by the natural beauty of the scene that unfolds before you. Brimming with water, the dam is fringed by banksias, cypress, and rarely seen specimen trees that promise a kaleidoscope of colour come autumn. Azure kingfishers dive for food, black cockatoos come to bathe and sip, and turtles dry off on the bank. This 10-acre wonderland comes with an established orchard of tropical fruits, including lychees, limes, pomegranates and persimmons. The professionally planted garden is bursting with bird-attracting ornamental shrubs and native timber trees such as quandongs and hoop pines. An open, useable paddock is suitable for horses or crops. The huge, powered shed has a mezzanine for extra storage. Outbuildings include a large hen house, tool shed, wood shed, and a ramshackle ‘boat house’ that adds charm to the dam. A second smaller dam comes with pump. However, for the astute buyer, the most magical aspect of this special property is that there are two separate dwellings, making it perfect for dual living or rental or both. Both houses are storybook perfect. The pretty three-bedroom Queenslander (circa 1920s), built in Toowoomba, was transported to its current site in the 1980s. With French doors opening on to the hardwood bullnose verandah, it

features original high ceilings, fretwork, breezeways, VJ walls, polished hoop pine floorboards and a full-height sash window. Everything is freshly painted inside and out. The large lounge and adjoining dining room exude serenity in soft shades of cream and lemongrass, warmed in winter by a wood combustion heater. The functional L-shaped laminate kitchen, with gas stove and double sink, affords the chef panoramic views of the dam and in-ground 13-metre saltwater lap pool. There are three generous bedrooms; the master with BIR, aircon and an office/ sitting room that opens on to the verandah. The bright, terracotta tiled bathroom boasts a genuine cast-iron, claw foot bath. The house comes with wireless NBN already connected. Barely visible through the trees across the dam is the equally charming rustic hardwood cottage. Hand-hewn long ago from trees harvested on the property, this masterpiece of woodcraft has raked flitch ceilings, timber floors throughout and built-in timber storage units aplenty. The open plan lounge and kitchen comes with a pot-belly stove. Two bedrooms and a quirky slate and timber bathroom with a deep, oval bath complete the accommodation. From the kitchen, lounge room and small verandah, you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the dam to the hills beyond. Privacy, tranquillity, 5 minutes from town, 20 minutes from Noosa, and a million miles from care. Inspection is a MUST. Contact Kess Prior, 0404 344 399 Hinternoosa.com.au, 5447 7000.
