2013 Cooroy Fusion Festival huge success

THE 2013 Cooroy Fusion Festival delivered on all its promises to build on the success of the previous years. Sunshine Coast Council Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said the 2013 Cooroy Fusion celebrations, which attracted thousands of people to Cooroy by offering a diverse range of free family-oriented entertainment, was a fantastic community event for all to enjoy. “It offered a chance for residents and tourists to experience this beautiful hinterland town and its amazing array of creative talents,” said Cr Wellington. The architecturally award-winning Cooroy Library will be hosted events for all ages and tastes including workshops on sustainability, yoga and tai chi demonstrations, Gubbi Gubbi storytelling, the Noosa District High School Fusion Film Festival and much more. There were also lots of activities to entertain children including free face painting, the Pokemon Club, and competitions. The historic Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) opened its doors for the fifth biennial art educator exhibition, Squeeze ’13 100% Local Ingredients Only, which encouraged art educators out of their classrooms and into their studios. The Festival also featured acoustic music sessions by headline acts Ayla Scanlan from Sydney and Pomona’s Andrea Kirwin. This fusion of Cooroy community events also included market stalls, local foods, the Cooroy Wood and Craft Show and the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society Mother’s Day Show. news Gala Auction Celebrates Noosa High’s 50 Years

COOROY RAG

NOOSA District State High School is celebrating 50 years of education by auctioning $3000 worth of prizes at a celebration evening for past and present students. Thanks to the generosity of local business people like legendary surfboard shaper Tom Wegener, the auction offers punters some once in a lifetime items. Tom has been making surfboards for over 15 years now and has hand crafted a mini surfboard to help draw the bids. The board is valued at over $200, and is truly unique in Tom’s usual craftsmanship, and is versatile enough for any beach enthusiast. The board does not need wax. His boards are made from Australian plantation grown paulownia. “It has taken me years of working with paulownia to get the wood and cuts just right so this thin little board will

flex but not break in the crashing waves,” Tom says. He will continue to “feed it” oil until next week. Tom’s favourite break is Little Cove, Noosa yet he grew up in Los Angeles, California and was drawn to the Noosa Shire because he believes it is paradise on earth. On the day he left L.A., all the beaches were closed due to water pollution. Tom has made surfboards for Tom Carroll (2X world champion), Mike Stewart (9X body boarding world champion), Tom Curren (3X world champion) and professional surfer David Rostovich. There is much on offer for the evening, with past student and tennis world number one, Pat Rafter donating a Davis Cup shirt signed by himself and team. Other prizes include a weekend’s accommodation at

More than a Birthday Party IMAGINE being a student, parent and teacher at the same school for 50 years. Liz Garbacz will celebrate her golden career along with Noosa District State High School later this month. Graduating from Year 12 in 1971, Liz returned four years later as a teacher. Today, Liz leads the Student Welfare Department while she organises the school’s official birthday party. She has proudly seen her three children graduate from the school and has taught more than 6000 students from the local area. With a teaching career of 38 years, she is now facing the reality of teaching grandchildren of her earlier students!

While much has changed in 50 years at Noosa High, the one thing that has never changed is the nature of the students. “It would surprise many to know how kind kids are and they love to have fun at school.” Mrs Garbacz said. Anyone who has attended Noosa High or had a child at the school will probably know Liz, affectionately nicknamed “Mrs G”. She would love to see any past students at the Meet and Greet being held on Friday 24 May 6 -10pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the school’s 50th celebrations on Saturday 25 May at the grounds in Cooroy 10am -4pm. Entry is free.

RACV, dinner for four at Arcuri Restaurant, numerous original artworks by talented local artists, a hydro massage at Noosa Springs, luggage from Absolutely Fabulous and much more. Most of the donations are from businesses run by past students, joining in on the celebrations. The auction will be held at the school’s hospitality centre on Friday 24 May starting around 6pm with entertainment, nibbles and drinks available for $15. All past students are invited. Please see the school website for more details. For general celebrations, anyone can join in on Saturday 25 May at the fun day where a mega raffle with over 40 prizes will be held and any items not reaching their reserve will be auctioned.

news Student of the Year gives back to indigenous community

COOROY RAG

(R-L) Focus Health Network’s Harry Pitt, Kristal Muggleton and Sunshine Coast TAFE’s Jenny Butler are working together to deliver better Indigenous training and employment pathways. SUNSHINE Coast TAFE Indigenous Student of the Year Kristal Muggleton of Cooroy is no stranger to the training challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Kristal dropped out of high school during the middle of Year 12 and spent the next couple of

years ‘drifting’ through the hospitality industry. After contacting an Indigenous support worker at Sunshine Coast TAFE in late 2011, Kristal turned her life around. “I was made aware that there were training opportunities for Aborigi-

nal and Torres Strait Islanders and given the confidence and support I needed to succeed,” Kristal said. “TAFE also introduced me to a range of workshops and events that boosted my skills and ability to network.” With some hard work and determination,

Kristal finished Certificates III and IV in Education Support last year and was appointed TAFE student ambassador and Indigenous Advisory Board member, as well as given the coveted Indigenous Student of the Year Award. Now an Indigenous liaison officer at schools in Noosa and Cooroy, Kristal is passing on her experience to the next generation. “I help students with literacy and numeracy skills and connect them with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events,” Kristal said. “I’m proud I’m doing something worthwhile by helping young people and letting them know that education can provide their lives with direction, just as it did mine.” Today the 23 year-old joined a community workshop aimed at improving access to study and jobs for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders across Queensland. Hosted by Sunshine

Coast TAFE at its M o o l o o l a b a campus, ‘Joining the dots from Access to Employment’ brought government, not for profit and private organisations together to develop a joint action plan and deliver better Indigenous training and employment pathways. Kristal said she provided a voice for Indigenous youth. “Young Indigenous students face numerous challenges in accessing and completing education, and again in finding work,” Kristal said. “There are cultural issues, self-esteem problems, financial barriers – many just feel that they aren’t being heard but are too embarrassed to ask for help. “In my experience there is help available, but it can always be better and events like ‘Joining the dots from Access to Employment’ will help us share our knowledge and make sure we are all working together.”

Labor’s Budget leaves Cooroy to Curra miles behind SHADOW Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss, said the Gillard Government’s election Budget fails to fund the completion of the four lane Cooroy to Curra Bruce Highway upgrade. “People who live in Wide Bay and rely on this section of the Bruce Highway are right to be disappointed that the Gillard Labor Government has again failed to commit to completing the full four laning of the Cooroy to Curra section,” Mr Truss said. “The Budget effectively confirms that under Labor, the four laning will not even reach Gympie until at least 2025. “I am appalled that the Federal Labor Government’s Budget fails to establish a plan to fund the full upgrade. Labor fails to understand just how critical this road project is, for Wide Bay, for Queensland

and for Australia. “We need this investment now to improve safety and to improve the carrying capacity of the road. Numerous studies have found that the Cooroy to Curra section is the most treacherous stretch of highway in Queensland and fixing it should be the Government’s highest priority. “The former Coalition Government announced in 2005 that the Cooroy to Curra four lane project, including the Gympie bypass, would be finished by 2020. It is now 2013 and Labor still has no plan to get the job done. “Labor’s refusal to fund construction of the remaining sections means that motorists will have to put up with changing road conditions, changing speed limits and changing road quality for years and years to come – all while

traffic volumes continue to rise,” Mr Truss said. “In 2008, the Rudd Government only agreed to provide funding for Section B to bail the former Bligh Labor Government out of the cost of diverting the Highway around their Traveston Crossing Dam proposal - a dam that will now never be built. “Last year, Labor announced that construction would begin on Section A early this year, which extends the four lanes from Cooroy to Sankey’s Road. This was only made possible because the Newman LNP State Government prioritised and fast tracked funding to start it. “The Coalition is committed to upgrading the Bruce Highway to eliminate black spots, improve the carrying capacity of the road and make it as flood-proof as possible.”

news Joe Jurisevic to Stand for Noosa Community Council

COOROY RAG

For all Your Lawn & Garden Needs Free Quotes Call

13 1 546

RESPONDING to the community call for fresh faces, Joe Jurisevic has announced his intention to stand for a Noosa Community Council. Joe, a long term Noosa resident, is well known for his role as Noosa Community Coordinator for the “Clean Up Australia Day” campaign. In this role he has seen the impact of service cuts affecting our environment and local amenity while rates have been increasing. Joe wants to see a cleaner Noosa and environment through initiatives from a new Community focused Council. Joe’s support for Noosa de-amalgamation was not just for a more environmentally friendly Noosa. He feels our identity as a unique region creates an opportunity to engage in new tourism strategies and opportunities. “Noosa is the sum of all its parts: our unique and historical places, together with our Hinterland can enhance the attractions that our river and beaches already offer to provide a more complete and engaging

Noosa experience”. The long running political battles being played within Sunshine Coast Destination need to be avoided. Noosa has always had a strong and vibrant Tourism Board and it needs to be free to pursue opportunities within our Hinterland, leverage the Biosphere Reserve and discover our long indigenous heritage to focus on long-term stays to boost our local economy. “Noosa has a unique opportunity, using a new and fresh generation of councillors, combined with experienced mayoral candidates, to create a council that will listen to the community and give direction and certainty to all the constituents of the Noosa Community. By taking advantage of new technologies we can establish new methodologies for engaging with the community as a whole, from the beaches through the Hinterland, giving all an ongoing voice to the Community Council’s decision making.”

“In the next two years Noosa Community Council will need to map out its processes for meeting the Noosa Community’s needs including the environment, tourism and enhancement of our community lifestyle. We need to continue with the momentum of positive community spirit following the overwhelming vote for Noosa’s independence”. Joe is a family man and local small business operator fully engaged in the local community. His leadership as local coordinator for Noosa’s “Clean Up Australia Day” is complemented in his positions with the

Noosa Ratepayers and Residents Association, Noosa Dolphins Junior Rugby Club and Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union Committees, Cooroy Tewantin Noosa Local Ambulance Committee, and involvement with NICA, Noosa Chorale, Noosa Arts Theatre, Heritage Park Bush Care, and Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club. Experience in the local community will be an important asset in establishing our new community council. Joe not only has that proven track record built over time, he has the drive, energy and enthusiasm to deliver results to the

people of Noosa Community. It is important that as a candidate Joe hears your concerns and ideas to represent the community honestly and effectively. Please contact Joe, preferably on email joejurisevic @gmail.com or by phone 0457 509 149.

Letter to the editor ON behalf of Stacey, Cody, Tia and myself I want to thank my friends, family and the community and businesses of Cooroy for the support I have received during my recent diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. To name everyone without leaving someone out would be impossible. Your support has allowed me to recover without stressing about how I was going to survive while I couldn’t work and I can’t express how much it means to me. A special thank you to my best friend Kathy and my boss Nikki at The Cooroy Hotel. To be a part of this amazing community is a privilege and an honour. There is no better place in this world than our town..... Cooroy! Thank you, Cathy Breed

AT last it has arrived, the Government’s spring into action, The Budget, the Treasurer’s weapon of cash extraction. No one is spared when Budgets are produced, (Sometimes Government’s own chickens come home to roost!). The Budget was the target of much supposition, By the media, of course, and the ever alert Opposition. The woodwork was alive with know-all ex-politicians, Economists in full flight, and the usual statisticians. The economists will, as usual, do their best to explain, Why all their forecasts, were wrong once again. Vested interests will sob, and complain they’ll all go broke, And unions declare, jobs will go up in smoke. Deserving nurses, teachers, aged care and health, Will look in envy at the banks’ growing wealth. The pollies, expectedly, will enjoy their usual rise, Which never seems to cause anyone any real surprise. Sport of course, will receive its solid support, (Can’t expect our athletes to worry and go short!) There’s talk of buying more submarines, it seems that they might, Let’s hope that this lot can go to sea, and are safely watertight. I expect the Government will have more problems before long, But they’ll have the solutions – neat, plausible, and wrong. It’s the familiar, conventional, financial mish-mash, Promises, excuses, and dire warnings of a crash. But we are still a lucky country, no need for doom and gloom, So sit back, be happy, and wait for another boom. Jim Dunstan

IT’S important to get the name of your business right because it has to say a lot about you or at least make potential customers curious. It has to be easy to use. Is the name very easy to understand? Spell, type, talk about or refer to? Is the name easy to say? Will someone hesitate to use it? Tonguetwisters are no fun for anyone and some letters are harder to say than others. Are you using a ‘quirky’ combination of letters, numbers and other elements to make it stand apart? Is it powerful and different? Is the name unique or as close to unique as possible in your industry? Is it a ‘one of a kind’ wordmark in your space? Consumers and customers are inundated with mediocre names and shopping experiences. Make it highly relevant! Does the name fit the personality

of your brand and the type of business you’re in? Does it quickly convey something about your business or product? Can it be trusted and respected? The use of a surname is usually the first choice for small business and professional services but this can bring unique problems. Does the name suggest different things to different groups at different times? Is your intended meaning clear and easily understood? Or are you spending a lot

of extra money explaining it to people over and over again? Successful businesses usually get that way by being clear, focused and consistent. Give your brand the time necessary to create that associated reputation, image or badge. If you would like to discuss financing a business or any other banking matter, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

Wellington’s Way by MP Peter Wellington Blue Cards for Amusement Park Operators I was horrified to recently discover that amusement park operators did not need Blue Cards. Last week in Parliament I asked the Minister for Communities and Child Safety Tracey Davis to review the current legislation and am pleased to report that she agreed to do so. I am sure many parents who frequent these places assume the people who work there or operate them have been through the necessary police checks and have a Blue Card. We must ensure that our children are safe and in good hands when they attend amusement parks. Until the current law can be amended I caution all parents to take care to investigate the suitability of the people who are operating these parks. I congratulate the Minister for her good sense in agreeing to review this obvious loophole in the Blue Card legislation. Nambour Hospital Car Park Update Last week in Parliament I asked the Minister for Health for an update on what was being done to address the car parking problems at Nambour Hospital. In his response the Minister said that he would be receiving a report from his Department in the not too distant future and mentioned that one of the things to be considered was options where private providers have come in and been given a hand to construct car parks. ANZAC Day As well as the Cooroy and Nambour ANZAC services I attended services at several of our schools and community organisation. I apologise that it is impossible for me to get around to everyone. Mary Valley on the Market The Newman Government announced it was finally opening the long heralded Tenant Purchase Scheme on Thursday 2 May 2013. Tenants who have been living in the property for at least six months and who have fulfilled all their lease obligations, have been asked to register their interest in buying the property at market value, which is apparently going to be determined by an independent valuer. This disenfranchises other people from being able to buy any of this land at much reduced prices. I believe there is no way the government can get a fair price for any of these properties unless they are put on the open market.

Cyber bullying NOOSA District State High School Year 9 students were recently educated about cyber-bullying and explained their rights and responsibilities regarding social media by Maroochydore Policeman Senior Constable Mark Readman. Students were provided with strategies of dealing with and reporting online harassment and the legal ramifications of partaking in cyber-bullying were listed.

news Noosa Biosphere stands tall on international stage LAST week Noosa Biosphere Limited (NBL) distinguished itself as the only representative invited by UNESCO to present on behalf of a singular Biosphere Reserve at the Strategic Meeting of Asia and the Pacific Biosphere Reserve Networks in Hanoi, Vietnam. “We have received international recognition for our community governance process, our projects and the progress we have made,” explained Chair, Dr Sue Davis. “We can be proud of what we have achieved as we build our next phase of development”. Noosa Biosphere Limited was represented throughout the five day program by academic and awardwinning trans-disciplinary artist Leah Barclay. Leah is a Noosa Biosphere Governance Board Director (Culture). Attended by 32 participants from regional Biosphere Reserve Secretariats, the UNESCO National Commission, local governments and NGOs, the theme of the meeting was “Shaping the Future We Want for All”. Leah presented a Noosa Biosphere case study which revolved around the unique “bottom up” management structure, involvement of the local community, and the role of creativity and culture in the Biosphere. Examples of projects presented included the Noosa Biosphere Festival, the NBL Partnership Program, Climate Action Plan, Floating Land Festival, and the upcoming Balance-Unbalance International Conference. Leah had the opportunity to Chair a group session and says that it was quickly evident that the Noosa Biosphere Reserve model was very highly regarded throughout the Network.

Professor Nguyen Hoang Tri of the Vietnam Man and Biosphere National Committee, and Le Thanh Tuyen of Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve singled out Noosa for special mention in their addresses. “Both have visited our Biosphere on study tours and taken inspiration from their observations of our model. Mr Le Thanh indicated their branding and partnership approach had been largely inspired by NBL,” says Leah. “There was also an interesting conversation around the fact that Noosa was clearly one of the most active Biosphere Reserves presented, yet had a very strong community governance structure, quite unlike most others.” One of the major outcomes of the meeting was agreement upon 15 recommendations to advance UNESCO Asia-Pacific. “The development of case studies, best practice guidelines and integrated digital platforms - particularly for capturing creative content, site based stories, intangible cultural heritage, tourism and other knowledge sharing - were identified as the most logical and critical priorities,” says Leah. “There was clear recognition that Biosphere Reserves across the Asia-Pacific could be strengthened dramatically if they all had access to better knowledge sharing tools and resources. NBL now has an opportunity to be a key stakeholder in these developments.” Leah was delighted to receive a further invitation to present about creative projects happening in the Noosa Biosphere at a South and Central Asia Man and Biosphere Network (SACAM) meeting in Pakistan in October 2013, with a view to hosting a creative event with Biosphere Reserves in 2014.

No RSL retirement community for Pearson’s Road RSL Care has advised that, following a strategic asset review, it is proposed that they divest themselves of the vacant land in Pearsons road where they had proposed to construct a retirement community. This is sad news for Cooroy as quite a number of people had expressed interest in purchasing accommodation within the community. The decision has been taken because of the poor state of the residential market.

COOROY RAG New canteen open for business NOOSA District State High School opened its new canteen on Monday April 29 to a big, hungry crowd. Staff and students were excited to visit the new coffee shop extension, which sells a variety of hot and cold drinks and healthy muffins. The milkshakes, coffees, frappes and hot chocolates with marshmallows have been a real hit. Canteen staff have are thrilled with the crowds lining up at each break and are looking at taking on another employee to help cope with the hungry customers. The canteen redevelopment began late last year and continued over the school holidays through to April 29.

Festival of books, ideas, comedy and music SEX, drugs and ‘rock and roll’ star in the newly-released program for the Reality Bites Festival, to be held from 25-28 July in Cooroy Library princinct. Inspired by shock jock Alan Jones’ now famous complaint that women are ‘destroying the joint’, organisers have themed the festival to canvass some of Australia’s most provocative and topical social issues – and they’ve invited some of the country’s most controversial authors and social commentators to stir the pot. ‘It seems that every time you open a newspaper or even just your Facebook page, people are pressing hot button issues like misogyny, pornography, drugs, religion, racism, the health care crisis, crime and corruption,’ says festival director, Melanie Myers. ‘It’s impossible to ignore and writers are responding to it; often seriously, but sometimes with a lot of humour.’ In a four-day festival which promises many highlights: • Australian feminist and academic, Dr Anne Summers will talk about her very topical new book – The Misogyny Factor. • The editor of the Overland literary journal, Jeff Sparrow, will discuss pornography with Sydney Morning Herald columnist and Spirit House author, Mark Dapin, and erotic novelist, Krissy Kneen. • Memoirists, Mary-Lou Stephens, Jim Hearne and Kristina Olsson and true-crime guru, Matthew Condon, will look at how writers negotiate fact and fiction to uncover secrets and expose lies. • Sydney author, Tanya Levin, will give a very personal account of how her life moved from ‘Hillsong to Hard Time’ as she discusses her disentanglement from Hillsong Church and her subsequent ro-

mantic entanglement with a prison inmate, as described in her riveting new book, Crimwife. • Local success story, Judy Powell, who first pitched her idea for a book to an expert panel at the festival’s wildly popular pitching clinic a couple of years ago, returns, this year, to launch Love’s Obsession - a biography of Australian archaeologist Jim Stewart and his wife, Eve. And the ‘rock ‘n roll’? No, Elvis won’t be making an appearance, but this year’s festival is not just about non-fiction books. The 2013 program has been expanded to include music, poetry and comedy. For example: • In a special festival event, Melbourne comedian, author and social commentator, Catherine Deveny, will perform a stand-up show - ‘Destroying the Joint in Ten Easy Lessons’ - at Pomona’s historic Majestic Theatre. Voted one of Melbourne’s most influential people, Deveny has gained national prominence through numerous television appearances - most recently as a participant on SBS’s Go Back to Where You Came From and after a controversial run-in with Archbishop Peter Jensen on ABC’s Q&A. Also appearing at the event is songwriter/ musician Alesa Lajana. Alesa will perform a preview of her ‘Hidden History’ project which shares, in song, oral and written stories about Australia’s past from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous sources. • And, mixing high society with hilarity, Kristy Chambers, will regale listeners with tales of her (un)brilliant career as a nurse during an afternoon at Cooroy’s new venue for indulgent high teas, Tealicious

House. It may not solve the health care crisis, but they say laughter is the best medicine! Workshops and small venue sessions sell out quickly so organisers are urging festival patrons to get in early and buy tickets before July 1 and save up to $40 on great value on package deals. Check out the Reality Bites festival program at realitybitesfestival.org/program and book online or in person at Annie’s Books, Peregian.

Family financial fitness IF your family had to take a financial health test, how do you think you would fare? When it comes to money management, are you confident you have all your ducks in a row, or is there room for improvement? Financial stability is one of the most important things we can provide our families, yet when it comes to money issues many of us prefer to bury our heads in the sand and hope for the best. The following checklist can help all families, regardless of their income, get their budgets back on track and set themselves up for a stable financial future. Financial health checklist for families: ¨ Do you have a budget? - It is essential for all families to have a household budget and stick to it. If you spend more than you earn, it can quickly land you on the rollercoaster of debt. Look for ways to reduce spending such as using discount petrol dockets, buying generic brand groceries, taking your own lunch to work and cutting back on take-away dinners. ¨ Strategy for paying off debts - One of the biggest threats to family budgets is credit card debt. Credit cards are fine if they are paid off in full each month before interest is incurred. But if there is a large amount of debt sitting on a card, it could be costing you big time as interest rates on credit cards can be as high as 20 per cent or more. It’s important to pay off this kind of debt as fast as possible. To do this, you will need to make more than the minimum repayments each month. If you have several cards maxed-out, consider rolling all the debt in to one low interest-bearing card to save on interest costs. Once you’ve paid off the credit cards, tackle

personal loans and the mortgage next. If you can, make extra repayments on your home loan and reduce interest. ¨ Protect your family - It is something we don’t like to think about, but you need to ask yourself how your family would cope financially if you or your partner prematurely died, were injured in an accident or became too sick to work. These days, insurance doesn’t have to be a big drain on the budget. If cash flow is tight, you can get affordable life insurance and income protection through your superannuation. If finances allow, it’s also wise to look into Trauma and Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance. Having an up-to-date will is a must and it’s also advisable to have an enduring power of attorney and advanced health directive in place so someone can make financial or health decisions on your behalf if you are unable to. ¨ Have an emergency fund - As a contingency for life’s unexpected expenses, it is essential to have an emergency fund or access to cash through a mortgage redraw facility or offset account. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three months salary in the kitty. This may seem a tall order for most, but it’s worth starting to build this up as a vital resource. ¨ Saving for the future - While it’s important to create financial security for your family today, it’s also vital to have a long term plan for the future. A financial planner can help you work out how much you will need to live the lifestyle you want in retirement. They can also assist with strategies to boost your super, such as consolidating multiple accounts to reduce fees and salary sacrificing. *Chad Monroe & Provision Wealth

OVER the railway line, tucked away at the top of the stairs in Cooroy Village Shopping Centre, you will find Joan Digital: a new art gallery and recycled clothing shop. Joan Digital was born out of a lifetime in the fashion industry, dressing people with interesting, unique and flattering garments. Joan Digital has original designs and labels donated from all over the globe, as well as great boots and shoes. There’s a quick turn over in stock because of the reasonable prices with items going quickly so pop in regularly for a peek as new garments arrive weekly. You will be welcomed by owner Joan Pollock, most likely, feverously drawing on her computer. Her latest venture is illustrating a children’s book by a local author we’ll keep you posted on that one in the near future. Digital Painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolour, oils, impasto, etc, are applied using digital tools by means of a computer

and software containing a virtual canvas and paint box. Joan acquired her first graphic tablet 10 years ago, a self taught artist she illustrates everything from children’s books to business cards, personalised greeting cards, posters and banners for shop fronts, Favicons for websites and Facebook portraits. She loves to dabble in comics, steam punk (a new sign for the shop will be influenced by this genre), Japanese Manga and Fantasy Worlds. “I would love to see

this emerging art form grow and create work opportunities for the new generation of young artists of the region. This could be the first of many studios to open and offer a new visual platform for gamers, advertising, fashion, books etc.” You can find Joan at her desk at Joan Digital, Cooroy Village Shopping Centre, First floor, Corner of Elm St and Diamond St. Phone 07 5472 0996 Email joanlaura pollock@gmail.com

news

COOROY RAG police beat

with Sergeant Mal Scott GREAT news recently with the arrest and charging of a 49 year old male for numerous fraud offences after he targeted five Cooroy Businesses on the day before Christmas last year. The arrest was the culmination of a four month investigation which went international as it will be alleged that the offender left the country regularly as part of his extensive fraud operation. Detectives from the Noosa CIB and the Major Fraud Investigation Squad are still investigating and further charges are expected to be laid in coming months. This is great news for the broader community as it will be alleged that the offender had been operating for a long time and intended to keep operating until his recent demise. Again, it’s a timely reminder to never give bank details or PIN numbers out and to thoroughly check the credentials of anyone seeking to do business with you. I’m certainly not criticising the shop keepers who recently fell foul of this individual as the methods he was using were extremely sophisticated and would have brought most of us down. Probably the best advice I can give people is to be wary of people with a mobile Eftpos device as sometimes these devices can be used to disguise an unlawful card skimming device. The MO of this particular offender and with most offenders targeting business owners is to strike during busy times so the victim feels rushed and more likely to make rash decisions. If in doubt don’t part with your card and check the details of the person

purporting to be legitimate. Phone the business address and Google the company and if the details do not check out then don’t proceed with the transaction or call the police for advice. The high tide mark seems to have been reached in regards our youth problems with a noted absence of bad behaviour in our town and the surrounding areas. Word is certainly out amongst the main offenders that ANY bad behaviour will be reported and acted upon. Police certainly take no pleasure in handcuffing and arresting juveniles and these extreme measures are only as a last resort but where justified police will have no hesitation in taking such action. Can I encourage townspeople to keep reporting bad behaviour and let’s not take our eye of the ball and let the momentum swing back towards bad behaviour. Police are trying to be positive and to reinforce good behaviour wherever possible so if you do see youths doing the right thing around town then take a minute, walk up to the kids and say, “WELL DONE GUYS.” The recent tragic death of young Amber Stent who attended the Noosa District High School is a timely reminder of how each and every time we step into a motor vehicle we are potentially taking our lives into our own hands. Please drive with this thought in mind and drive defensively and with great care. The Police Officers of the Cooroy Police Station would like to offer our heart felt condolences to the family and friends of

young Amber and from what I’ve heard she was a very beautiful and caring person. Cooroy’s Crime Clear Ups continue to be well in excess of State averages and in some instances we are double the state average so the Cooroy Community needs to give themselves a huge pat on the back for helping the local police achieve this great result. Local police seek to involve the community in keeping the town safe and this ethos seems to be paying off greatly with many recent offences being solved with community input. Criminals have their own networks and know where the weak and apathetic communities are so let’s keep outsiders seeking to conduct unlawful activities out of our town by being constantly vigilant and reporting suspicious behaviour to police. Download “The Cooroy App” and stay tuned for police reports of crimes occurring in Cooroy that we need assistance with solving. Let’s leave a sour taste in the mouths of any person seeking to do the wrong thing in Cooroy. Lastly and most importantly I would like to offer my personal condolences to John, Shireen and Nathan Pawley for the sad loss of their Wife and Mother Roslyn. Many Cooroy locals know and respect the Pawley’s which was shown by the huge attendance at Ros’s funeral and cortège through to the Cooroy Cemetery. Ros was a wonderful and caring person and loved by many and she will not be forgotten by her many family and friends.

NEW fitness equipment has been installed by Sunshine Coast Council at Cooroora Creek Park in Pomona. The old fitness equipment was around 6 years old and had to be replaced due to wear and tear. Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said the new equipment was a great improvement. “Over the years manufacturers of outdoor fitness equipment have improved the quality of their product,” Cr Wellington said. “This new equipment is robust, well-designed, and allows for a range of cardio and resistance training. “All the machines have excellent instructions on the frames. They are designed so two people can use them at once which is great for friends who like to work-out at the same time. And the equipment is installed on rubber ‘softfall’ matting. “This represents a $70,000 investment in the Pomona community. “The equipment sits along the walking circuit that meanders through the park and is surrounded by magnificent trees, large grassy areas and subtle landscaping. Cooroora Creek Park is a truly superb setting and one of the hinterland’s hidden gems.”

Max Woods out and about at the ANZAC Parade

THE artistic town of Eumundi on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast showcased ‘The Best of Oz’ theme for the 2013 Australian Body Art Carnivale, and what a weekend it was! The colourful community arts event again drew thousands of spectators to watch some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, vehicle artists and wearable art designers do battle. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme of ‘Best of Oz’ drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories. “The theme saw artwork showcasing everything from Australian mammals, reptiles and birdlife to delicate wildflowers and dramatic landscapes,” says Danielle. There were also tributes to ANZACS, swagmen and flying doctors, as well as notable Australians like Bryce Courtenay, Young Einstein and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The Opera House featured, as did Aussie icons like the Hills Hoist, Vegemite and even budgie smugglers! Other artists chose to take the Best of Oz theme to be Wizard of Oz – with emerald cities, Dorothy’s red shoes and Toto featuring in the artworks. “There’s always an incredible buzz when more than 100 artists come together to create and then parade their works,” says Danielle. “The artists require a strong focus to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competition, yet all seemed to really enjoy themselves with a great sense of camaraderie and encouragement for each other’s work” The prize-winners for 2013 are as follows: Airbrush body art Winner Ana Quintero; R/Up & People’s Choice Kelli MacAlpine. Snazaroo Brush & Sponge body art Winner & People’s Choice Anke Catesby; R/Up Melanie Hughes. Bill Magin in action LOCAL legend and icon of Sunshine Coast Football, Bill Magin played his 700th senior game last weekend. He has been a player/ coach/administrator for the Pomona Club for 27 years. His Pomona commitment was interrupted by stints at Centrals Aloomba in Cairns and time in Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Bill’s football career boasts an extraordinary list of highlights that include 12 club B&F’s, three League B&F’s - two on the Sunshine Coast and one in Cairns - and 10 League leading goal-kicker awards, plus four 100-goal seasons. Representing South Queensland, North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast, he won an incredible nine country carnival B&F’s. He played in every country centre in Queensland that plays the Australian game and toured New Guinea with the Cairns League in 1981. His slight and wiry frame belied his undeniable talent. He had a prodigious leap and uncanny goal sense. Bill has continued to play in Masters competitions where the awards, accolades, goals and good times have continued. Bill also contributes through countless hours of junior coaching and was extremely proud when son Rhys was elevated off his beloved Essendon Bombers Rookie list to Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, May 22, 2013

debut in the AFL competition in 2008. Since then one of his other sons (Alik Magin) played for two years as the Gold Coast Suns. He currently has two sons playing for the Pomona Seniors (Blake and Alik’s twin Lanze) plus his grandson is playing in the under 10’s. He is currently President of the club and coaching co-ordinator. He is also in the Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame. This is a big year for Bill and the club as not only does Bill (club president) reach the unheard of 700 game milestone but the club itself turns 40. There have been many local names and characters go through the little country AFL club nestled under the watchful eye of Cooroora Mountain, which began life 40 years ago out at the Noosa show grounds and then moved to its current location on Pomona Connection Road. While all year is a celebration of 40 years of the club the big bash is planned for the night of 6th July at the Pomona hall, so mark your diaries. Other goings on from the Demon’s Den is the old boys (along with the young at heart Bill) have been getting out every fortnight to play masters football. It may not be the prettiest to watch but everyone out there is having fun and still pulling on the boots at 40+ years of age! The seniors have been going great and lie second on the ladder. The team is really taking shape this year with a mix of great young and fast talent (many of whom came through the junior ranks at the same club) combining with a few older football heads who now the game inside out. This is a team which should go all the way and dominate the competition for seasons to come. Every team has its unaccountable losses and this happened to the Demons away to Bribie. But they bounced back the following week to beat local rivals Gympie by 120 points and retain the Frank Rowe shield for another year! Big thanks to all those parents who get in and volunteer their time to make these things happen. While on the subject of thanking people the club would like to thank Eco Cottages Pomona and Wimmers Softdrinks for sponsoring the jerseys for all 5 junior teams this year, the boys are looking very smart!

COOROY RAG

DHOMS Kitchen is offering cooking classes this winter commencing in June. The first class will be on Tuesday June 11 at 10.30 am. It will involve an introduction to the basics of Thai cuisine as well as a cooking demonstration of several easy dishes with some hands on experience. At the end of the class participants will sit down together with Dhom and Spencer and enjoy some of the food demonstrated. Dhom notes, “Thai cooking is a very playful cuisine which allows you much flexibility with the ingredients you use. However, to cook authentic Thai you need to have an understanding of the basic principles and rules of the cuisine. This allows you to cook up a variety of Thai dishes in as long as it takes to steam your rice, about 20 minutes!”. During the class tips on how to cook delicious gluten-free Thai food will be given. As wheat is a relatively recent ingredient in Thai diets, much of traditional Thai cuisine is gluten-free. Dhom’s kitchen stocks gluten-free soy and oyster sauces from the excellent Megachef range. The cost for each class is $40 per person and includes lunch, refreshments and recipes. A second class themed Noodles and Soups will be held on June 18. Private classes for groups of 8 to 12 people are also available. Bookings are essential. Dhom and Spencer have previously conducted classes at Black Pearl Epicure Cooking School in Brisbane. Dhoms Kitchen is reviewed and recommended in the 2013 Queensland Good Food Guide and the 2013 Foodies Guide to Brisbane.

Dhom and Spencer are currently in Thailand on a food research trip. They look forward to sharing some exciting new dishes upon their return. Dhoms Kitchen will reopen for dinner on Wednesday 29 May. GOOD Shepherd Lutheran College senior students are full of anticipation as they complete their final rehearsals for this year’s musical – The Sound of Music– to be held at the Noosaville State School Hall from 31 May – 1 June. The classic story of Maria, who gives up her training as a nun to take up the position of governess to widower Captain von Trapp’s seven children, is re-told through all the songs audiences have come to know and love including Edelweiss, My Favourite Things and of course the title song – The Sound of Music. Accompanied by the Noosa Orchestra, and conducted by accomplished conductor and violinist Antoni Bonetti – the show promises to be a musical feast for both young and old. “A musical of this proportion takes many, many hours of work and commitment from both students and staff to bring it to life,” said Ms Heidi Woodruff, Director of Music at Good Shepherd Lutheran College. “Auditions for roles took place at the end

of last year and rehearsals started in the first week of Term 1 this year, with many after school and weekend rehearsals taking place,” she said. Tickets are still available to join the talented drama and music students from Years 8 - 12 on the amazing journey of the von Trapp family as they try to escape Nazi occupied Austria in this iconic musical. “This promises to be an excellent demonstration of what our young people can do when supported by staff, family and peers,” said Mr Dyer, Principal Good Shepherd Lutheran College. “It also gives the students a fantastic opportunity to showcase their singing, dancing and acting talents to their families and the wider community – while learning to work together as a team.” If you are looking for an exciting musical adventure you won’t be able to go past The Sound of Music. Tickets are on sale now until sold out and are available by calling Good Shepherd Lutheran College Administration on 5455 8600.

news Back pain affects one in eleven

COOROY RAG

LET’S Get Back to Our Best campaign launches Spinal Health Week (20-26 May) Back pain is a common ailment for Noosa Hinterland residents. One in eleven Noosa Hinterland residents can be expected to have back problems this year. This means one of the most powerful preventative health steps you can take is to improve your postural fitness. That’s the message from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) who is urging residents to Get Back to Your Best this Spinal Health Week (20 – 26 May). Local Chiropractor Dr Adam Roache has called upon Noosa Hinterland residents to take up the challenge of improving their postural fitness. “Postural fitness helps you lead an optimal healthy lifestyle; reduce muscle fatigue and improve your postural endurance,” Dr Adam said. “Postural fitness means optimal spinal alignment. It gives you greater strength and endurance, better coordination and balance,” Dr Adam said. To take control of your postural fitness, you need to think and walk tall and pick an exercise plan that will strengthen your core muscles. Dr Adam suggests exercises such as pilates, yoga or swimming are good choices to strengthen your core. But Dr Adam also says we need to pay attention to how we are sitting and how long we are sitting. The CAA can provide a free Sit Right widget, which can be downloaded to your desktop to help prompt you to take regular breaks. Tips for improving your posture at work include: • Try standing when you’re on the phone for extended periods; • During meetings take regular stretch breaks;

• While you’re working at your computer take short breaks to stretch and stand; • Check and adjust your position regularly. Get Back to Your Best is part of a national campaign by the CAA to draw attention to the size of the problem of back pain in Australia. To promote the message that a healthy spine leads to a healthier life, Life Enhancing Chiropractic is offering free Spinal Analysis and Posture Assessments at the clinic (bookings essential) and is conducting a Community Workshop at the Cooroy Library. This free workshop “Free Yourself from Pain Naturally” will be held on 25 May at 9.30am (bookings essentials through our clinic). “Spinal Health Week is a great reminder to make an appointment with your local CAA chiropractor to assess your spinal health and discuss how a more active lifestyle will improve your overall wellbeing,” said Dr Adam. Chiropractors, who are five years university trained, are experts at analysing posture and spinal problems and can provide expert care, lifestyle and exercise advice. Over two million Australians have back problems each year. The consequences of back pain are serious – it affects families, lifestyle and productivity. People with back problems report 2.5 times more disorders, such as depression. The CAA believes that more investment in chiropractic care and research is necessary. To support the CAA campaign visit to the Spinal Health Week Facebook page at www.facebook.com/spinalhealthweek For advice on how to Sit Right or to download the free widget, visit www.SitRight.com.au and for a posture assessment, contact Dr Adam Roache at Life Enhancing Chiropractic, your local CAA chiropractor.

OK … you’ve made the commitment and decided to start a new fitness regime. Congratulations… For many people, the reason they go to a fitness facility is for guidance on what to do and how to do it and of course….for motivation. But Penny and Russ from the The Workout Shed ask “are you getting what you are paying for?” “Are you getting Fitness or Illness? “The reality is we all have to be a little smarter with our health. Its precious and worth investing in. How many well intentioned people do you know that have gone to a well marketed gym, who are then pigeonholed into a program, work out unsupervised, without quality instruction, and as a result end up injuring themselves and giving up. “Did you know that many of the larger, franchise style gyms sell unlimited memberships with lock in contracts? Given the size of their premises, you have to ask … how do they plan to provide responsible care and facilities to all

of those members? How do they provide spaces in advertised classes for all those people? “The answer in short is that they don’t. “Most large gyms operate on the knowledge that over 60% of new members will stop coming (for one reason or other) within 3 months of signing their contracts. Given that you have committed to pay for this membership for a year, this is very expensive ‘fitness’. The majority of people who attend gyms, have limited experience or education in the use of gym equipment (even some who may look like they have). Unsupervised gym use, or undertaking classes which are not tailored to your individual needs, can cause a large range of injuries. Injuries are very expensive. If you have had to go to the physiotherapist, or undertake a series of treatments with a remedial therapist or the like, you will know the burdening expense of such ‘health’.” Here is a checklist which will help you to train smarter and stay well:

• Train in professionally accredited establishments with trainers that have a depth of experience • Are you greeted when you enter the establishment? Is there someone present to help and listen to you? • Are you asked to undertake a fitness/health check … or are you just expected to sign a waiver? • Research who you are training with & what their qualifications are (and what they entail) • What facilities and depth of services does the establishment offer their members? For example, can you train? Can you do classes? What are the numbers in the classes? Does the establishment offer you facilities to assist & increase your training recovery? Can you receive assistance with good nutrition & purchase quality drinks, supplements, etc • Are your personal health and fitness needs/requirements accommodated and assessed? Is this ongoing? Is this present even in group environments/ classes? • Who are the owners?

Do they believe in what they are involved in? Are they a part of the business, or merely investors and/or large corporations? “The price you pay for facilities and services can often reflect the standard. The reality is that you wouldn’t engage the services of an unlicensed electrician because this is very dangerous. Similarly, take the same approach when looking for any health or fitness practitioner, and know that you are in good hands. Quality fitness will not burden you with all the hidden healthcare costs and will provide you with incentives to be healthy and fit.

“The long and the short of it is … be consumer smart. Invest your time and money in quality fitness. “Poor quality fitness will most definitely cost you a whole lot more in the long run, lowers your motivation and doesn’t help you reach any of those fitness goals you originally set. Think about this. You are worth it.” For more information on The Workout Shed v i s i t www.theworkoutshed.com 78 Lawnville Road Cooroy ( 2 mins from Cooroy library) Phone 5442 6338 for your first visit & complementary organic coffee or juice.

Tone up your tummy MANY women and men find themselves with a tummy that won’t shrink regardless of exercise, crunches or diet. Some even find that intense abdominal exercises actually makes their belly look worse. If this sounds like you, you may have a diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles). This condition is common in women who have had children (even if it was years ago), people who have done very heavy manual labour or exercise (including strenuous abdominal exercises). Signs of a rectus diastasis are: a half football-like bulge in the abdomen when straining or when going from lying to sitting, umbilical hernia, a visible gap between your rectus muscles (outermost abdominal muscles) or a belly that gets bigger as the day goes on. You may also experience back ache due to the ineffective support of the abdominal muscles. So what can you do about it? Most people are told to either live with the problem, or have

surgery. However there is another way to fix this problem! The Tupler Technique® is a researchbased exercise therapy proven to treat and heal a diastasis without the need for surgery. Rebecca and Craig Steele from Hinteractive Physio have recently returned from New York, where they trained with Julie Tupler RN, the creator of the Tupler Technique®. They are now keen to share this knowledge and are going to be holding an Abdominal Rehab Seminar in Cooroy on Saturday 1st June. Participants who undergo this rehab program can expect to have a reduction in their diastasis (if one is present), smaller waist line and increased muscle definition, improved core strength and reduced back pain. The program is suitable for both men and women and even people who don’t have a diastasis but want safe core strengthening exercises. For more information or to book a spot in the seminar, contact Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556.

How does acupuncture improve fertility? WHETHER you have been having trouble conceiving a baby, or suffering from repeated miscarriages, acupuncture can help increase your fertility. Acupuncture is a powerful and gentle treatment which has helped countless men and women with a wide range of fertility concerns. It can either be used as the main therapy, or as support for treat-

ments like IVF, IUI, and ICSI. A recent analysis of seven studies done on the topic of IVF found that the odds of conceiving went up about 65 percent for women receiving acupuncture compared to those who did not. In 2002, a study out of Germany on women undergoing IVF reported that 42 percent of the women who received acupunc-

ture got pregnant, compared to 26 percent who did not receive acupuncture treatment. Many conditions can interfere with fertility for women including: hormonal imbalances, luteal phase defect, disorders of ovulation, poor follicle/endometrial quality, immunological factors, inflammation of pelvic organs, Endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, fallopian tube blockages, thyroid disease. Acupuncture is an important therapy which can be very helpful in the treatment of the above conditions. In cases of tubal blockage, or other conditions where surgical procedures may be needed acupuncture can improve circulation and healing after the surgery. Acupuncture is theorized to improve women’s fertility by: providing improved blood circulation to the pelvic organs, enhancing follicle development, relaxing the cervix, improving fertile mucous, regulating ovulation and the menstrual cycle, improving the endometrial lining, decreasing overall

stress levels. Acupuncture is also used to treat any Male factory Infertility. A study done in 2005 also reported that acupuncture treatment was associated with fewer structurally abnormal sperm, and an increase in the number of normal sperm. Acupuncture is also theorized to balance men’s hormones and reduce overall stress, both of which have great impacts on fertility. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to naturally boost fertility for men and women. Modern research is now indicating that it is also a promising technique to enhance assisted reproductive therapies like IVF. Not only have studies indicated that acupuncture is

effective, but it is also known to have an excellent safety record and to be affordable. This treatment will likely have a very important future place in helping many couples conceive the families they dream of. Amy Steinbeck, Acupuncturist & Doctor of Chinese Medicine specialising in Women’s Health is available for free 15 minute consultations both in private practice and via phone to discuss your individual fertility treatment options. Call Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine on 5442 5526 to book in for either and you can maximise your chances of conceiving safely and naturally with science based therapies carefully customised to your needs.

Maddy ‘The Mauler’ dominates in Gladstone

MADDY “The Mauler” Phillips dominated in her main female support bout in Gladstone last weekend. Maddy and the

Impact crew travelled to Gladstone to take on local girl Angela Bull in front of a packed house. This tournament was a prematched tournament

and Maddy was the only Impact fighter matched to fly the Impact flag. Round one saw Maddy come flying out

of her corner and apply pressure on the local girl immediately. Maddy was landing superb combinations, working the head and body of Bull. Her relentless pressure and aggression gave her opponent no time to settle into the fight at all. Round two started exactly the same as round one, only this time Bull came out of her corner in a similar aggressive manner as Maddy had. Midway through the round and Maddy was starting to gain control of the fight again when she unleashed a cracking left hook followed by an equally powerful right hand. Both punches found their mark and Bull was hurt and in trouble as “The Mauler” pounced. The referee was forced to intervene and Maddy was awarded the win via a TKO as Bull was unable to continue.

“That was an awesome performance by Maddy. She was a little nervous having to fight a local girl in front of a full house, but to her credit those nerves disappeared as soon as the opening bell rang,” said coach mark Evans. “She followed her instructions from the corner to a tee and finished up with a fantastic win. The sky is the limit for her at the moment, she is sending a clear message to all the girls in her division. “She continues to improve with every fight and always puts in 100 per cent! “We have driven a 10 hr return trip for 3.5 mins of boxing, but to see the smile on Maddy’s face as her hand was raised in yet another victory was priceless and reminds us why we do this week after week,” said Mark.

1.5 Wide Mr Gordon had to pay for at least 10 lunches with a number of boys and one Year 8 girl beating him to the finish line. A fun day was had by all.

NOOSA District State High School staff and students participated in the school’s cross country competition on Friday May 3. House pride was evident, with the majority of students taking part in the run and giving it a “red hot go”. Middle School HOD and HPE teacher Murray Gordon challenged the Year 8’s and 9’s in the competitive event, with the promise of a free tuckshop lunch for those who beat him.
