Deb doubles denim dollars

The Cooroy Lifeline Denim Sale is over for another year and what a sale it was. Cooroy Lifeline Manager and organiser of the now famous annual sale, Deb Daybell, and her band of volunteers raised a whopping $71,207.65 with all funds going to Lifeline’s Crisis Support and Suicide Prevention Hotline. The amount raised is almost double what was raised last year and Deb credits in part to being able to move the venue from the CWA Hall to the larger space in Cooroy Memorial Hall to fill with all things denim and country. It comes as no surprise that Deb already had the hall in mind in mind for the denim sale when she organised a mega raffle in 2017 which raised over $8000 to help revamp of the hall. In fact, nothing this diminutive dynamo can achieve is surprising. As a young woman Deb lived in Mackay where she made a living as a Pro Fisher before moving to the Sunshine Coast where she started working as a volunteer for Lifeline in Noosaville before gaining the manager’s position at Cooroy 20 years ago. Her successful Lifeline fundraising endeavours have included toy sales, fashion parades and other themed events but the Denim Sale is her real coup. She has taken what began as a small in-store sale 13 years ago to the incredible success it is today. Sadly, Deb’s passion for the Suicide Prevention Hotline comes from a very personal experience. She was only 24 when her father committed suicide, a tragedy that still makes her cry and to which she

attributes her drive to help people. “There are so many people who need help and someone to reach out to,” says Deb. “The Lifeline Hotline receives over a million calls each year and it takes money to man those phones so I’m over the moon with the amount raised from the Denim Sale this year. I’m really happy with all the great feedback I’ve received as well. Everyone’s only had positive things to say and hopefully everyone walked away with a great bargain,” she said. “Everything at the Denim Sale is sourced from the Sunshine Coast. It’s stored in the warehouse at Kunda Park and Deb Meikle from Lifeline in Nambour and I go down and sort through it all. It’s a massive job but very rewarding,” said Deb. “There’s so many people I’d like to thank for their assistance this year, especially our sponsors – Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Rag, Otter-B Signs, Hargraves Real Estate, Hot Gas, Cooroy Legal, German Bakehouse and Hinternoosa Realty. I’d also like to thank Nicole and her students from Noosa District State High School who did such a great job modelling and Rhys Lloyd, a student at the school for making us an advert and putting it on Facebook and Youtube. So many helpers and people to thank, especially my hard working volunteers. I couldn’t do it without you.” Congratulations Deb. We can’t wait for next year! And remember, if you or someone you know needs help, the Lifeline Crisis and Suicide Prevention Hotline number is 13 11 14.

Cooroy Fusion delivers! Everywhere you turned at Cooroy Fusion Festival last Saturday there was fun to be had. Live music, street performers, fantastic food, kids’ activities, talented artists, literary events, market stalls, wildlife shows and perfect sunny weather! The festival began nine years ago and started with the celebration of the Cooroy Library opening. It features the open houses of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club, Cooroy Camphor Laurel and the annual show of the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society plus a new addition this year with the Lifeline Denim Sale. Combine this with all that is great about the Hinterland and you have the ingredients for a highly successful day. “It was a wonderful day and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from everyone. We

couldn’t have done it without our amazing crew of volunteers and our generous partners and sponsors. Seeing our community connected in such a great way was such a great feeling for all of us,” said Jim Ennis, chair of the Cooroy Fusion committee. “Cooroy Fusion is one of those special events that just bubbles with community spirit. It showcases what a wonderful part of the world we live in. Our celebration included a huge range of activities at the Cooroy Mill Site, Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group, Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Library and the Butter Factory Arts Centre.” The Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent was packed full of top shelf entertainment and the Pickled Possum bar was a great spot to catch the likes of The Inadequates, The Barry Charles Band,

Annie J and Fusion and the Geckoes Wildlife Experience to name a few. The Supa IGA Cooroy “Tastes of the Hinterland” was a big hit with attendees delighting in samples from local producers. Other attractions included a photo booth with photos that were then be used to make Mother’s Day cards, pottery activities and Larrikin Puppet shows. “Cooroy Fusion Festival is a showcase of all that is wonderful about Cooroy and the Noosa hinterland,” Simone Flavelle from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank said. “We’re proud to partner with such a wonderful community event again this year. It brings smiles to so many faces. The many entertainers got toes tapping and provided a great background to so many activities that took place throughout the festival site,” she added. Cooroy Fusion Festival continues to be a fantastic event for the kids, families and most of all, our community.

As Autumn surrounds us and we are blessed by cooler weather, the running community comes to life and many dormant seasonal runners emerge from hiding. Three months from now, for a select few, the King of the Mountain running festival will again unleash up to one hundred runners onto the steep, tricky slopes of Mount Cooroora. The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club hosts the event and over the years has turned it into one of the biggest events on the Noosa Hinterland calendar. The club also organises a Poker Run Motorcycle fundraiser which is held on Sunday 30 June for the two-wheeled enthusiasts out there. The festival date is set for Sunday 28 July and includes the Nestle 3km Family fun run, as well as Reid Signage Service Primary School Relays, Raine & Horne Tug O War, Pomona True Value Bike Ride, Livelife Pharmacy Skate Park Jam, markets, rides, entertainment and so much more. The popular Zinc Prince and Princess

Race is on Saturday which takes competitor right up to the first stairs on the mountain before descending a tricky track back to town. Local and past Queen of the Mountain does wonders to train the school children in preparing for this event. Sunday builds up to the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge sponsored by the local branch at Pomona. Regarded as one of Australia’s toughest races, runners from all over the world descend on the small town of Pomona to tackle the uniquely short but tough 3.8km race. It’s anyone’s guess as to who will reign supreme this year, with Mark Bourne and Ben Duffus having both each won the race in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Marks recent success in vertical world circuits in Hong Kong sets him up against Duffus, an endurance champion who recently competed in a 170km ultramarathon. Both men are in the running, but could a new King of the Mountain emerge this year? In the Queen of the mountain category, last

year’s winner Meg Reeves was a full minute ahead of her nearest rival Reesha Lewis with past champion Kim Beckinsale in hot pursuit. Will we see a new queen of the mountain emerge or will Meg Reeves capitalise after her recent success winning the Mount Panorama Punish. As is often the case, the New Zealand team from Kawerau will be wondering if their best runners can topple the Aussies in what has become a ‘battle of the Tasman’. Their best runners from last year’s sister race in New Zealand stepping forth to challenge the Aussies in Pomona. For the rest of those running, there is one more challenge that can force us out of bed each morning and tally our kilometers each week. Pomona has always had the ‘Sub-30’ club. With it, comes the prestige that you were able to tackle the climb in roughly 20 minutes and fumble, flop and frantically scramble back to the finish line in under 30 minutes. It’s a challenge worthy of recognition and anyone questioning its achievement will begin wishing they hadn’t about halfway up the mountain on

Amos Saraber and Reesha Lewis (Photo Raoul Slater) race day. journey. Anyone else thinking This year the event is also about competing in the hosting a New Zealand great race should not be Lucky Draw, meaning one put off by it. Runner’s Profile: Martin Saldais Martin Saldais has been running the Pomona race since 2008. To his suprise that year, he ended up in the midfield after a year of dedicated training. It took him several years, but in 2017 Martin entered the ‘Sub-30’ club in the great race after coming agonisingly close a few times. “When I ultimately got fitter and more competitive after my first attempt at Pomona, I tried to plan my training a bit better. Talking to others, to locals who ran the race. Trying to find out how they managed to get that time,” said Martin. “I even spoke to the top three guys (not trying to copy them) just to get an insight into their training. I learnt that the adrenaline and the pace at the start had a big impact on their race times and they told me that they ‘fire’ just before the base. In 2017 Martin came across the line with a time of 29.25. “It meant that what I thought was an im-

possible task was finally achievable. In 2012 I got 30:11! I was so fatigued and keeled over at the end of that race and I had had it! At the point of pure exhuastion. Even being that close, I asked myself how do I recover from this for next year both mentally and physically. It was a year of reflection and with some great planning and a longer pre-season training I finally got there! “Even though it’s a short race, it’s the toughest one I’ve done! I’d rank it even harder than my marathons which were on rough terrain and the Ultra marathon that I’m training for. Martin’s best advice for runners on race day, is to just have banter with your running mates and try to relax as much as possible. “The top three obviously have a bit of pressure cause they are chasing times, but if you are just starting take it easy.”

Diamond Street Intersection In his media release on April 18, Marty Hunt (Member for Nicklin) reported that TMR has advised that “the majority of people who participated in the consultation process are against traffic lights as the solution to the safety issues at these intersections” and that he will be meeting with TMR in early May, to discuss the future for the intersections. He will meet with Cooroy Area Residents Association (CARA) following his talks with TMR. Meanwhile, Noosa Council has asked CARA to present a concept plan for the Diamond/Elm St intersection. “With the expected growth of the town CBD to the east of the rail line, the plan is to present the

east side as an alternative retail zone with Cooroy character. “Traffic lights at this intersection would create a suburban Brisbane look that would not be appropriate for a vibrant rural retail precinct,” said CARA President Rod Richie. CARA’s plan will include an iconic roundabout that presents a distinctive eastern entrance to Cooroy, with pedestrian crossings to both new development proposals, associated traffic calming measures, and a new Transit Centre near the railway station. More information will be provided as it comes to hand. If you would like to join CARA’s Traffic SubCommittee, please phone 5442 6776.

President of Permaculture Noosa, Latha Matters, is excited by the increasing number of young families who are committing to growing their own food and embracing a permaculture lifestyle.

Fun, interactive kids’ activities will challenge and entertain all ages. And if that’s not enough … the appetising and inventive food trucks will create an appreciation for gourmet wholesome food unlike any you’ve tasted before. Are your customers paying on time? Simone Flavelle, Senior Branch Manager, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank To improve your business cash flow, you need the period between paying your expenses and getting paid by your debtors to be as short as possible. When you set up a new account, make sure you and your client both agree to the credit terms. This may include discounts for early payment, or interest charged for late payments. Once these terms are in place, monitor them by communicating with your client so they are always clearly informed of when they are expected to pay and also how late payments will be handled. For example, a three-step process may involve a phone call at two weeks late, a letter of demand at one month, and referral to a collection agency at two months. If an existing customer is stretching out your terms, you need to change their behaviour. A lot of owners are scared to request prompt payment be-

cause they feel they will lose business by being too demanding, but by not doing this, you have actually become part of the problem. You need to assume a more assertive attitude, because once you’ve provided goods and/or services, you’re working for free until your customer pays you. However changing behaviour requires a gradual approach. Remember you’re the one who has let them creep out to these longer terms. So, you have to work with them to make changes; you can’t just pull a stick out and start beating them with it. Call them more frequently, and sooner than you usually would. For example, if someone is paying you regularly at 90 days, start calling them at 30 days and say ‘The invoice is due, can you please advise when it’ll be paid?’ You don’t want to lose your client by changing

your credit terms dramatically, but do explain to them that you need to be paid on time. If there have been exceptional circumstances that prevent your client from paying on time, find out if what they’re saying is plausible. If they can’t afford to pay the entire amount, develop a payment schedule and be clear on the consequences if the instalment terms are not met. If you have any questions about your business or your banking, please contact me or any of our team on 5447 7131 (Cooroy) or 5485 1786 (Pomona) or me directly on email at simone.flavelle@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG POLICE BEAT With Sergeant Mal Scott

Recent media reports informed the Cooroy and Noosa Hinterland Communities of a gang of thieves targeting our local Liquor Bottle Shops. The Thieves were stealing cars from as far away as Robina, Cherbourg, Richlands and Inala and driving to the Sunshine Coast committing a string of offences along the way which included the Cooroy Bottle Shops. I’m able to inform the public that a 21 year old male with links to Cherbourg and Goodna has now been arrested and held in custody for the Cooroy offences with ongoing inquiries still being undertaken for another offence committed in Pomona. This arrest was made possible by excellent work achieved by Police Forensic officers who were able to obtain vital forensic evidence from the scene of the offences which then lead to the identification of one of the offenders from this gang. Another vital part of this investigation and

subsequent arrest was achieved by the obtaining of CCTV evidence which quickly identified the stolen vehicles used to commit these offences which enabled police to link other offences so evidence at those locations could be cross evaluated. Once again, the partnership formed in 2016 which saw Cooroy Police partner with the highly proactive and influential Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has borne fruit with yet another crime solved due to the system of CCTV cameras installed to help keep our community safe. These offences are still under active investigation as some offenders still remain outstanding. A common thread in this style of offence sees offenders targeting late model and often prestige motor vehicles such as BMWs, Audis and Jeeps etc to steal and then commit offences. With all prestige motor vehicles now using smart key and ignition locks it is virtually impossible for offenders to steal a late model car

without the keys, so offenders are driving the streets looking for a target vehicle parked in the street, driveway or garage. Once the car has been selected offenders will commit what police term a “sneak” offence where entry is gained often through an open or unlocked rear door or window to the residence whilst the occupants are asleep inside. Offenders then locate the vehicle smart key which most people leave on a bench or table near the door and simply enter the car and drive away. This method of stealing a vehicle is by far the most common way offenders now have of stealing cars so to make it as hard as possible for offenders to commit this type of offence please lock doors and windows and do not leave keys or garage remotes in or near your car and simply place them in a place not easily accessible to a thief. This style of offence occurs on a reasonable regular basis with the Noosa and Noosa Hinterland areas

certainly no immune from this offence. Police have also recovered a stolen Kubota Tracked Loader valued at $80,000 from a Black Mountain Road address after attending the address to make inquiries about suspicious behaviour in the area. The Loader was stolen about 18 months ago from the Bundaberg area with extensive investigations eventually resulting in the location of the Loader and the arrest and charging of a 33 year old Kandanga man who was found in possession of the stolen loader. This offence is made even more serious due to the impact it had upon the victim as the victim was no longer able to work due to his loader being stolen which greatly effected his ability to earn a living resulting in great hardship. The alleged offender is due to appear in the Noosa Heads Magistrates Court to answer the charge of Receiving Stolen property. The Cooroy Blue Light

Disco has continued its resurgence with ever increasing numbers of children returning to enjoy a great night’s fun. In 2017 and early 2018 numbers were on the decrease but due to the efforts of the hardworking committee namely Cathy Breed, Warren and Peta O’Neil and Cooroy police the numbers have been steadily increasing to the point that my ear plugs were once again broken out due to the numbers of screaming kids full of red cordial. Of course, that’s a small price to pay to be able to see and interact with such great kids which is a way that I personally use to remind myself that the world is full of amazing and wonderful people which is a fact often lost on first response police officers dealing with tragedy and conflict on a daily basis. Dates for upcoming Discos will be the 15th June, 13th July, 10th Aug, 14th Sept, 12 Oct and 9th Sept so please continue to support this very worthwhile event.

COOROY RAG Cooroy Pomona Lions

Our fundraising year has already ramped up with yet another successful Bookfest being held in March. This time it was held over 2 days to allow for parents to browse uninterrupted. Our next Bookfest is happening on the Friday and Saturday 7 and 8 June. Lots of books to choose from all $2.00. It’s a great way to enjoy books that have been of value to one person without a large investment. Also held was a Trivia night. It’s a night of frivolity with easy questions, table nibbles, supper and free tea and coffee. Reasonably priced drinks

were also available on the night. We’re planning more in the latter part of the year and will let you know the date. The King of the Mountain committee has been hard at work behind the scenes preparing for the 41st King of the Mountain. Parks and Wildlife have been airlifting boulders and equipment to repair the track in preparation of the event and entries are coming thick and fast. Don’t forget the Nestle 3k family fun run, the Livelife skate park events and for the littlies the Cooroy Rag animal farm. All happening on the last Sunday in July so

keep it free. This month saw our final end of year donations which totalled over $40,000. A great result for such a small club. The list is too long to mention all donations but here are just a few - a total of $15,000 went to disaster relief in Australia, Diabetes Qld, Motor Neurone Disease, Childhood cancer research, and a total of over $18,000 to local entities and persons. Be prepared used to be the Scout’s motto and in this instance your local Lions Club have taken it a step further. A donation of $1000 to the Lifeflight

Around Australia in 343 days! foundation which assists in ferrying injured people off our wonderful Mt Cooroora was also made last week. Dan King accepted the cheque for $1,000 on behalf of Lifeflight. These donations were made possible by everyone who supported the Lions Club by attending the Trivia nights, Bookfests, attending or sponsoring King of the Mountain or simply buying an egg and bacon burger at the monthly bbq in Pomona park. Don’t forget your old eye glasses are valuable to others. Simply drop them into Community House, H Art of Bali fashion or Pomona Family Health in Pomona, and Let’s Talk Hair, Katie Rose op shop, Cooroy Drapery and Optometry in Cooroy. Sue and Jo will then collect and they will be sent for repatriation overseas to those less fortunate. Want to have fun, meet people, get involved with a little fund raising activities, go on social outings. Give Robin a call on 5485 3236 and come to one of our dinner meetings or even stop in at the market bbq to have a chat.

That’s the ambitious target for runner Andre Jones who made a coffee stop at French and Gorgeous in Cooroy on a very wet Saturday morning of the Labour Day weekend. Starting out in Melbourne some 56 days earlier, by the time he visited Cooroy Andre had already completed some 15 percent of his epic 15,134 kms journey. That’s the equivalent of running 358 marathons, expending 15 pairs of shoes in the process!

Pushing a 60 kg buggy, aptly named Intrepid 2, Andre is raising funds for four charities, namely Beyond Blue, GO Foundation, The Royal Flying Doctor Service and The Smith Family. His target is $60,000. The Cooroy Chamber kicked off the Cooroy contributions with $200 to the cause. Let’s hope that others follow the lead. To donate, please go to runaroundaustralia. com Whilst it won’t be the first time that such a run has been completed, it

is thought to be the first time that it has been attempted unassisted, that is, with no support vehicle or crew. The buggy was already showing signs of the ordeal by the time it made Cooroy, with two of the wheels quite badly buckled. Replacements are apparently waiting for him on his arrival in Gladstone! During his brief stopover, Andre also introduced us to his mascot. At first, we thought it to be road kill but it turned out to be a cute emu glove puppet named Bob, given to him by his wife! If all goes to plan, then they will meet up again when he arrives back in Melbourne on Valentine’s Day, next year! After Cooroy, the next overnight stop was Gympie, just a mere 64 kilometre jog from where he started his day in Noosa Heads! Chris Bell, VP Cooroy Chamber of Commerce

COOROY RAG

MAPLE STREET SURGERY COOROY

welcomes Dr Hannah Newell Kraus

Delegates on tour This month the International Board of the International Plant Propagators’ Society (IPPS) (an international association of plant production professionals) will be returning to Australia with a tour starting in Cairns and concluding at the annual Australian conference in Maroochydore. The IPPS provides a forum for sharing plant production knowledge with the aim to improve the professionalism, knowledge and skills of its members. The 12 day tour will be stopping at major coastline towns on their journey south visiting nurseries, Botanic Gardens, farms, research centres as well as experiencing some iconic tourist attractions. The usual participation is 50 to 60 delegates from all over the world. Their tour will conclude on the Sunshine Coast where these delegates will join a larger group of Australian members at their Annual Conference from Thursday 30 May through to Saturday 1 June.

On Tuesday 28 May the International Board tour members will be visiting the Noosa Botanic Gardens. The Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens shall host the afternoon with an hour’s walk through the Gardens together with a propagation shed inspection, culminating in a hospitality gathering at the Gardens’ amphitheatre taking in the beautiful Lake Macdonald view. “This is a fabulous opportunity to showcase and spread the word internationally of our unique Noosa Botanic Gardens” said Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends President Jill Brownlee. “And for us to explain to these plant production professionals how we gather, cut and propagate from the plants grown in the Botanic Gardens or in our volunteers’ own home gardens.” If you’d like to become involved with the Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends, check them out at http:/ /noosabotanicgardensfriends.com or follow them on Facebook.

A doer not a talker

Carol Watkins with some of her pottery

Carol Watkins describes herself as a doer, not a talker. “If I’m going to do something, I have to do it properly,” she says. It’s an attitude that has served her well throughout her working life. In Sydney, she rose to become HR and Marketing Manager for Australia’s largest architectural practice and she was still in her thirties when

she became the first woman appointed to the Board of the State Chamber of Commerce. From there she moved to Brisbane to start her own executive recruitment consultancy, becoming one of the top recruitment operators in Australia. When she retired and moved to the Cooroy area with her husband, Cliff, there was a short

People with Purpose in Our Community period of wondering what to do next (after all, a dedicated doer is happiest when doing!) It didn’t take her long to find something. For the next 11 and a half years Carol became a volunteer for the SES. Of course, she dedicated herself to the job and was soon made Deputy Controller (a position she held for five years) and then Group Leader in Cooroy for the next six years. “It was a totally different work environment to what I was used to,” says Carol. “But I do like a challenge and I really did enjoy the job.” There were certainly challenges. Being on call 24/7 meant the pager would often go off at 2am and sometimes she would be gone for 14 hours. “During that time there were a lot of accidents on the Bruce Highway and sometimes I was getting called out 4 or 5 times a week,” says Carol. “It got to the point where I’d come home and my husband would say, “Sorry, do I know you?”’

Carol’s work at the SES was recognised when she was voted Member of the Year for Queensland in 2014. Eventually it was time to hand over. By now Carol had joined the Cooroy Future Group (CFG) and was also doing a lot of her own pottery. As a member of the CFG’s management committee, she very quickly became involved in the negotiations with Council to take over the Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) and since then, has played a large part in the venue’s transformation. The change has been dramatic. “People who haven’t visited the Butter Factory for a while, come in and say ‘Wow, it’s so different!’” says Carol. “It used to be a quiet place – now it’s alive and vibrant and exciting!” Carol, who is now President of the Board of CFG, attributes much of the BFAC’s success to the fact that it is now run as a commercial enterprise. “When we announced we were going to charge for venue hire and take a low commission a lot of

people thought it wouldn’t work,” says Carol. On the contrary, the venue has hosted many successful exhibitions (including by internationally-renowned artists such as Kaya Sulc and Wolfgang Lammle) and is booked until the middle of next year. Carol has also been instrumental in setting up the Artisan Store, where almost 40 local artists sell their paintings, pottery, jewelry and much more. For anyone who hasn’t been in there, it’s an ideal place to pick up original, reasonably priced gifts. It’s also worth checking out the BFAC website for information about workshops, masterclasses and the benefits of becoming a Butter Factory Friend (BFF). Meanwhile, with the CFG also running the Cooroy Fusion Festival and the Great Noosa Trail Walk, Carol has plenty to keep her busy – and that’s just the way she likes it! A Cooroy Pest Control community initiative

news Amnesty for unregistered dogs A Dog Registration Amnesty will run until the end of May to combat a rising number of unregistered dogs in the region. During the amnesty, Noosa residents can register their dogs free of charge (usually $160 or $40 for desexed dog) by popping into Council offices on Pelican Street or by submitting the online form. Local Laws Manager Phil Amson said there’s an alarming spike in the number of unregistered dogs in Noosa. “Almost half of all dogs that come into our pound, are unregistered. “Our officers have noticed an increase in the number of unregistered dogs in the region. In fact, both anecdotal and statistical evidence suggests that we have between 5000 and 8000 unregistered dogs in Noosa,” he said. According to the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008, dogs older than three months of age must be registered with Council. Mr Amson said unregistered dogs affect the community in a number of ways. “Dog owners mightn’t realise that the maximum fines for owning an unregistered dog is $2610, so it can be quite costly. Further to that, dog registrations allow Council to identify and reunite pets with their owners. “We are encouraging locals with unregistered dogs to register them for free during May as part of our no-questions-asked Dog Registration Amnesty.” This initiative is further supported by a joint venture with RSPCA Queensland to offer heavily discounted Microchipping Days at various locations around Noosa from June until the end of the year. “We are also teaming up with RSPCA to provide $24.95 Microchipping Days so pet owners can easily drop in to a local park and microchip their cats and dogs. “Once again, we need pet owners to take responsibility to register and microchip their animals. Fines for owners who fail to microchip their cats and dogs can be as high as $2600 and as a Council, we are making it easy for owners to do the right thing.”

Quixotica art space Located on the outskirts of Cooroy, Quixotica is a creative art space where long standing ceramic artist, Rowley Drysdale, makes his work and teaches ceramic workshops. It is recognised throughout Australia and around the world as an epicenter for Australian ceramic art. Locals will have the chance this weekend to see this working pottery for themselves when Quixotica opens its waterside gallery to the public. Set amongst a beautiful nature reserve, the gallery will be open Saturday May 25 & Sunday May 26 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Visitors are invited to stroll the grounds, see the waterside gallery, meet the maker and perhaps make an art or pottery purchase. Entry is free and refreshments will be available. Quixotica is also well known for the regular firings of large wood burning kilns which hold hundreds of ceramic pieces. These kilns are fired around the clock for up to three days by a team of ceramic artists. The resulting work is unique, with distinctive flame and ash markings, and kiln openings are eagerly anticipated. Visitors are welcome to view the latest unloading of a wood fired kiln from 4 pm on Saturday May 25, to see the hundreds of pieces of ceramic work as it emerges from the big kiln. Quixotica is at 151 Musa Vale Road, Cooroy. Open on Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26 from 10 am to 4 pm daily. Bring your family and friends for a wonderful creative experience in a beautiful part of the Hinterland.

Wearable artwork to take centre stage in Eumundi

On Friday 24 May Eumundi will play host to one of the Sunshine Coast’s most unique events with the Australian Wearable Art Festival rolling out the catwalk for over 40 wearable works of art designed by artists from Tasmania to Mission Beach. The event will have four main categories as part of its gala parade competition – Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable – as well as additional prizes for Haute-Couture, Headpiece, First Nation and best tertiary and secondary student pieces. Event curator, Wendy Roe said that the night is set

to be a spectacular showcase where guests will be treated to fashion taken to the extreme and all set in a picture perfect location. “We have a 16metre runway where haute couture will meet costumery – where waste will be turned into waistcoats and flower crowns become complete flower dresses,” Ms Roe said. “We have been working on this event for at least a year and we can’t wait to welcome everyone under the stars in the Eumundi Square.” The event has attracted national attention but local artists such as Larissa

Salton have been excited to have their works selected to take the stage. “I have been creating Renaissance-inspired gowns and headpieces to feature in my portraiture images for a while now. I repurpose puzzle pieces, curtains, toothpicks, broken jewellery, birds’ nests, suitcases and bullet shells to create an old-world whimsical charm,” Ms Salton said. “I have now taken this one step further and designed the work to be wearable on a catwalk. My pieces can be quite fragile and so there are many structural considerations to enable a piece to be runway ready.” This is a sentiment one of the acclaimed festival judges and fashion designer to the stars, Cindy Vogels, understands and agrees with. “This festival really allows artists to extend their practice and provides a platform for a wider audience to be inspired by form, structure, texture and colour - often using an eclectic mix of unusual materials,” Ms Vogels said. “I am excited that I have a number of works being displayed on the night as well as dressing our gor-

Be bowel cancer aware Bowel cancer is also called colorectal cancer. It is diagnosed in over 12 500 Australians every year, and represents the second highest number of cancer deaths after lung cancer. Mostly affecting people 50 years of age and over, it can happen in younger people too and is a serious disease. But......if bowel cancer or its precursors (polyps) are diagnosed early, it is often curable!! So what are the causes of bowel cancer and how can you avoid it? Unfortunately, the causes of bowel cancer are not clearly understood. However, we do know that some risk factors make it more likely that a person will develop bowel cancer. Some of these include: Getting older – commonly affecting people aged 50 and over; Inheriting one of two uncommon genetic disorders; A personal or strong family history of bowel cancer ; Having ulcerative colitis (inflamed colon lining) for more than eight to 10 years; Having a diet high in red and processed meat, drinking too much alcohol and smoking; Being overweight or obese (particularly for men). So what can you do to help reduce your risk of bowel cancer? Regular screening; Eating a healthy diet, including plenty of vegetables and fruit and only small amounts of animal fat - researchers believe that eating a healthy diet may help to prevent as many as one third of all cancers, including bowel cancer; Eating moderate amounts of lean red meat as part of a mixed diet including carbohydrates (breads and cereals), vegetables and fruit, and dairy products; Eating limited amounts of processed meats; Maintaining a healthy body weight; Exercising regularly; Not smoking or drinking too much alcohol. Following this advice doesn’t mean that you will never get bowel cancer, but it can reduce your risk and has other health benefits too. Did you know that LiveLife pharmacies offer bowel cancer screening for their patients? Bowel Cancer Screening involves a test for

Page 14 - Cooroy Rag, May 22, 2019

bowel cancer in people who do not have any obvious symptoms of the disease and aims to find any polyps or to find cancer early when they are easier to treat and cure. A bowel cancer screening test called a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) can detect these small amounts of blood in your bowel motion. The FOBT looks for blood in your bowel motion, but not for bowel cancer itself. This test is easy to do at home, and involves placing small samples of stool on special cards and sending them to a pathology laboratory for analysis. The results are then sent back to you and your doctor. LiveLife pharmacies encourage all Australians who are aged 50 and over, who do not have symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer, to undertake bowel cancer screening.

COOROY RAG An Easter Surprise

Become a Lifeflight volunteer

Alan and Norma Alan Brown is very lucky to be alive. Two years ago, just after moving to Cooran, Alan was working around home when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Fortunately, his partner Norma, who is a nurse, was home and was able to administer CPR for 25 min-

utes until the ambulances arrived and paramedics were able to stabilise him. But what Alan will be eternally grateful for is the availability of the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter that was able to get him to Kawana Hospital where he received lifesaving

treatment. Last year Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight’s iconic blue and yellow choppers flew 450 lifesaving missions. With a Critical Care Doctor on board, RACQ LifeFlight’s Rescue helicopters are regularly sent

to serious accidents, where early medical intervention can often be the difference between life and death. Crews are typically made up of a Pilot, Critical Care Doctor, Aircrewman, and intensive care Flight Paramedic or Nurse. On standby round-the-clock, they can be in the air within minutes of being tasked to a mission. Thirty percent of this community rescue service is funded and supported by the LifeFlight Foundation through a range of different and diverse fundraising programs. Alan is now a volunteer for LifeFlight where he is involved in assisting with fundraising efforts and urges anyone who has some spare time and is looking for a worthwhile cause to consider coming onboard. “We’re so lucky to have such a great resource available to us here on the Sunshine Coast,” said Alan. “You probably don’t think about it until something like this happens, and I am so grateful that I am alive today because of them and am able to give back.” If you are interested in volunteering please contact Mandy Hentschel on 5458 8700.

The Kindness Club are excited to share an email we received from Cooroy resident, Lorraine. Lorraine was the recipient of a lovely kind deed at Easter. She wrote: “Thanks for the avenue to express my joy in finding Easter eggs on our doorstep on Easter Monday. The joy not only in the gift but the kindness behind it, and the appreciation that children in our area are being taught the value that it is more blessed to give than receive. Thanks also to the parents and teachers who recognise that if you ‘train up a child in the way he should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.”

Clinton raises $2045 for Special Schools

As parents, Saturday 11th May was a day Chris and I will never forget. The Island Charity Swim from Mudjimba Beach to Mooloolaba Spit was cancelled due to the dangerous weather conditions. However, the contingency plan was for swimmers to compete the 11 km rectangle loop swim around the bay at Mooloolaba Spit. The early morning was very cold and windy as we waited for Cooroy’s Super Fish, Clinton Stanley, to prepare for his swim. Chris and I looked on anxiously, making sure he had lots of sun cream and wax on to protect him. Clinton a former member of Nambour Special School and a member of Noosa Masters was the only swimmer with a disability competing. Some time later it was a different story as we stood on the sand feeling both proud and happy

as Clinton finished his swim and ran up the beach with a huge smile on his face! Thank you to Noosa Masters team who swam, the boat paddlers and swimmer Mark Powell from Noosa Masters who swam with Clinton and kept him on course. A big thank you to all the wonderful shop keepers in Cooroy and the residents at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy Noosa who kindly donated money in support of the much needed playground equipment for the Special Schools. Also thank you those who came and supported Clinton, Chris and myself on the morning of the swim. Clinton is now back in the pool training for “his next adventure!” Sue Stanley Note: If anyone would like to donate towards this very worthwhile charity please phone Sue Stanley on 0400 867 158.

Arlo Crawford-Window Memorial Match

Photos by: Bateup’s Snaps

COOROY AUTO WRECKERS & ENGINE CENTRE

Cutters Corner Footy returned to Cooran for the triple header with the Cutters playing Yandina in the Annual Arlo Crawford-Window Memorial Match. A large crowd packed the ground hoping to watch the Cutters open their account for season 2019. For the first time this season a full squad of 19 was named for the reigning premiers. This was never going to be an easy game with Yandina’s forwards some of the best in the comp. Silly penalties & errors cost the Cutters good field position early in the game as Yandina raced to a 12 nil lead early. Repeat sets down Yandina’s saw the returning Darcy Crawford-Ricards set up a try for Luke Martin after some great lead up work from Jake Bullen. But a try right on half time again from

a silly error saw Yandina take an 18-4 lead into halftime. Good field position early in the second stanza saw eventual Man of The Match Jake Bullen cross early out wide with Austin Coleman concerting. End to end footy ensured a tight finish but it was Yandina who crossed to the score to 24-10 before another returning member from last years premiership squad Dylan Crawford-Window cross to make it 24-16. Unfortunately for the Cutters they ran out of time with Yandina taking the points. The major talking point was the sending off of a player from each team after a brawl which added even more spice to the encounter. Jake Bullen took home the Man of the Match Award with Nathan Roon, Luke Martin, Ben Hayes all contributing. Don’t forget the Cutters country kitchen is open every Friday. Search Cutters Country Kitchen on Facebook for the weekly specials. Our last home game on June 29 is our 30 year anniversary game. Keep your calendar free & watch Facebook for more information Upcoming games May 25 vs Kilcoy @ Yandina June 1 vs Mary Valley @ Mary Valley June 8 vs Beachmere @ Beachmere
