There’s a Ninja in Cooran

May 23, 2012

Not my fave

I’VE been waffling on about how time poor I am these days but I didn’t really think it was anything but my usual whinge until I walked past Daddows last week and decided I was going to buy the little Honda Jazz on the lot … because I didn’t have time to clean my old car. I don’t know how my car (or my thought process) gets into such a state. Every time I clean it out I say, “Well, that’s it. I’m never going to let it get like this again. I’m going to keep on top of this like every other grown up so I people don’t think one of my other jobs is a pizza delivery girl.” But no. Can’t do it. Keeping in mind that I’m not a rich woman and the reason I have no time these days is because I’m working three jobs to keep the wolves from the door, perhaps it’s time for some self evaluation. So … was it a major case of PMS? Was it because I really have so little time I can’t even think straight? Or was it impulse shopper gone mad? Oh well, I’ll think about that later, I haven’t got time right now, I have a meeting with Mr Dwyer to sign the finance documents. And I’m happy because I know that my new little Honda will stay clean for at least a month. So there you have it … Waffling, working and wolves … finding 15 double cheese burger wrappers on the floor and knowing I’m the only one who’s ever in my car … NOT MY FAVE!

Reading should be a joy – not a struggle They call us the Lucky Country, economically sound, Money flows quite freely, and privileges abound. Earth is filled with rich minerals, we have beautiful farming lands, We enjoy surf and golden beaches, leisure time on our hands. But in this lucky country, alarm bells are being run, About the reading and writing skills, among our growing young, Almost half the nation’s children, our students, and young adults, If tested for normal literacy ability, would have extremely poor results. Many of our teens, can name every rock musician, But have never read a book, wouldn’t recognise a noun, or preposition. A question “Who was Charles Dickens?” would cause many deep distress, Even if it appeared on Facebook, or arrived as an SMS. By the age of five, every child should be able to read, Finding the beauty of books, truly a joy indeed, We possess magnificent libraries, our own is one of the best, Filled with wonderful books, a literary treasure chest. Politicians seem to be under, their usual futile delusion, That throwing money is the best, their one and only solution. But I suggest the problem, could be helped in a good old-fashioned way, That parents should take the time, to read to their children each day. With the very young, each night a bedtime story told, Letting the children read with you, watching the story unfold, Instilling a love of reading, learning that a book is a friend, Delighting in the beauty of language, a beauty that knows no end. Schools are doing their best, to develop literary proficiency, Learning Centres are in being, to help right this sad deficiency, While this year has been named, the nation’s Year of Reading, One sincerely hopes, all this work is gainfully succeeding. Sport in Australia is all-important, we are virtually obsessed, We pride ourselves in being up there, with the sporting best, But it’s all very well to believe, we’re a special sort of breed, We won’t be the Clever Country, until all our kids can read! Teamwork the key for new council THE new Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and councillors have agreed teamwork will be vital to get the right results over the next four years. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the council has a good balance of skills and experience to deliver for the people of the Sunshine Coast. “There are people from all different backgrounds and life experiences – but one thing we all share is the belief teamwork will be the key to our success,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Working together we can achieve great things – there’s the determination to build

a stronger economy while protecting the environment. “That team is not just about us either; it extends to partnerships with council staff, state and federal governments and the Sunshine Coast community. “The biggest task council faces in the next couple of months is to deliver the 2012/ 13 Budget. “We need to keep any rate rise as small as possible while maintaining the quality of services – ratepayers deserve value for their money. “I’m confident through teamwork – and hard work – we will do just that.”

BRICKBATS to the person/s who dumped a huge load of rubbish, including white goods at the pull-in section of the T-junction of Black Mountain Road and the Range Road. Yes, many of us agree that the tip should be open more days of the week but how incredibly selfish and lacking in community spirit to litter our town so disgracefully. I bet you did it at night too so noone could see you. Shame on you! BOUQUET to a Blanckensee Road resident who took it upon himself to clean up the mess of the phantom litterer! Bob attached his trailer and took the time and effort to pick up every scrap and take it to the tip. A bouquet also to the tip man who accepted the load without charge. Thanks to people like Bob, our community continues to be a beautiful place to live. BOUQUETS to all the school children and cadets that did so much to make the ANZAC march and service in Cooroy so special. I was very impressed by the conduct of the school children who laid wreaths, their show of respect belied their young age. My thanks to all parents teachers and cadet officers. You have a lot to be proud of. BOUQUET to whoever found my car keys (with the red Kombi van keyring) and handed them into the Cooroy Police Station. It was very much appreciated. You saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you. BOUQUET to Irene Blakey who made and donated a beautiful wreath for ANZAC Day for Federal State School. Her generosity is much appreciated and her kindness will never be forgotten. BOUQUET and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people who came to my assistance when I had a nasty fall in the Cooroy main street recently, namely, the workers at the building site and the staff at the Cooroy Doctors Surgery. We are so lucky to live in such a caring community. Birthday BOUQUET Happy 40th to Brett - hope you had a good one! love from family & friends. BOUQUET to Bruce Forsythe who lent his van and equipment so we could set up power for food stalls at Cooroy Fusion Festival and Richard Oxborough who was on call all day to set up and take down the power boxes. These Cooroy sparky’s are great Cooroy community spirited people. BOUQUET to Gary, Ken, Col and Scott Christensen who helped put up and pull down the marquee after the Fusion Festival. It was a bigger job than we thought. BOUQUET to the 2 tradies from Cooroy who pulled over their ute and came to my assistance on Tuesday April 24th when I tripped and fell on the uneven footpath on Poinciana Avenue near Tewantin Police Station. And to the health worker from Tewantin who drove me to help and to the gentleman passing by who also expressed his concern. What a caring community we live in. Thank you to all.

COOROY gymnast and Cooran local lad Ned Baker recently had the distinction of winning a national competition run by the popular ABC show ‘Prank Patrol.’ Ned’s entry was up against over 1000 others from around the country, all vying to become the first ever Purple Ninja. “The gymnastics skills that I learnt at the Cooroy Gymnastics Club really paid off and helped me win,” stated an excited Ned after his return from his all-expenses paid trip to Perth for two days of filming. For those unfamiliar with the show hosted by hotty Scotty Tweedie, the basic premise is school aged kids pranking their friends in front of hidden cameras with a couple of ninjas running loose causing mayhem.

As Ned said, “It was amazing meeting all the cast and crew. Getting to see how a TV show of this complexity is put together was a real eyeopener. I learnt so much.” Ned’s winning role was to become a ninja, THE Purple Ninja, a new role created for the competition winner. The two days of filming were all part of the current Prank Patrol series known as the ‘Road Trip’. The first day involved helicopters, explosions, space debris and aliens. “ It was an outdoor shoot and it was going to be one of the biggest pranks Prank Patrol had EVER done and I was there for it!” Clearly Ned was in for a once in a lifetime experience. The second day, after a night in a four star hotel with a three course meal, was Ned’s day

where the Purple Ninja was born. “They gave me my purple ninja suit and now I was one of them; I WAS a Ninja! I can’t tell you too much because I’m sworn to secrecy and don’t want to spoil the surprise when the episode airs in September but the bit of the show that I’ll be in had me doing some gymnastic moves, pranking Scotty, talking IN Ninja and riding off into the sunset with mini- Scotty. Yeah it’s way cool but you’ll have to wait to see just what I’m talking about. Bring on September!” Ned’s success is a testament to all the youth in the Sunshine Coast hinterland; have a go and enter competitions that you are interested in. You never know; you just might win. “ Look out guys because after this experience, I want to host my own show. Watch this space people because you haven’t seen the last of The Purple Ninja!!!!!!!” exclaimed a newly confident young lad from a small town. Good luck Ned and we hope you are right.

Reducing direct costs can dramatically increase the profit on each sale, and eliminating unnecessary business overheads can have an immediate pleasing impact on your bottom line. Identify the steps you can take to minimise your direct costs, such as negotiating lower prices with your suppliers, reviewing processes and systems to minimise wastage, and implementing additional security to reduce the chance of theft. Most businesses tend to stick to the same supplier year after year, so this is an area well worth exploring. Costs that could be put out to tender in your business include insurance, power, telephones and internet. Introducing systematic procedures and methods will help reduce costs. Good systems will help you minimise errors, and reduce time and money. The time invested in creating systems is usually minimal compared with that spent solving a problem from scratch.

Where appropriate, turn decisions into policies to avoid having to make the same decision again or sort out the same issues. Learn from mistakes and problem areas, and if systems go wrong, fix them. It’s a good idea to review your systems periodically to see where improvements can be made. Focusing management awareness on profitability can have a dramatic impact. Even if cash flow is your top priority, this should not be at the expense of profitability. Make sure all your employees are aware of the importance of profitability. The most commonly used key performance indicators are actual sales against forecasts, costs against budgets, gross margin and staff costs. Get help from your accountant to ensure you’re monitoring the right indicators for your business. Monitor and measure employee performance and productivity, and reward productive employees by linking pay to effectiveness. It’s important to praise and

thank staff when it’s due, and provide a clear career path so they can grow and don’t see their prospects as limited. Set up systems that encourage the communication of best practice in your business. Benchmarking different parts of the business against each other can be a useful way of sharing best practice. Also improve communications with your customers and suppliers – they can offer useful tips and advice. If you have any questions about any form of you business or finances, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

Local retailer finds international success WITH all the hard times that many of our local businesses are having, it’s really nice to be able to report on an international success that one of our smaller shop-keepers has had. Local retailer Cheryl, of ‘Splashes of Sunshine Gift Shop’, has been in partnership for a long time with an American based print on demand firm called Zazzle. Zazzle is one of, if not the largest international print-on-demand company on-line and hosts billions of designs on even more billions of products, which are then sold all over the world. Cheryl uploads her designs over the internet and makes them available as products for sale through the Zazzle site. At the time of typing this one of Cheryl’s designs has been in Zazzle’s top 100 selling t-shirts list for seven

days. When asked “does this make you millions? Cheryl laughed and shook her head. However she says that it may help her invest in some new equipment for the shop, which will give more choices to our local gift buyers and happy eBay customers. So what was the design in question? Was it an amazing artwork, or a stunningly original idea? No, it was a simple text based design that reads. ‘Short People – God only lets things grow until they’re perfect. Some of us didn’t take as long as others, with a soft gray koru pattern behind it. It just seemed to catch the funny bone of lots of people. You can check it out at www.zazzle.com/super_cool*, by googling ‘funny short people revenge t-shirt’, or better still pop in and see Cheryl at 10 Maple Street, Cooroy.

Electrodry and the National Ashtma Council

FOR over 2 years Electrodry has been carrying the accreditation of the National Asthma Council of Australia’s Sensitive Choice program. Around 9 million Australians suffer from asthma and allergies. On 3rd January 2010 – Australia’s largest carpet and upholstery cleaner Electrodry was exclusively accepted into the Sensitive Choice program administered by the National Asthma Council, which aims to promote better lifestyle choices regarding allergy and asthma. Electrodry’s range of services including carpet, mattress and uphol-

stery cleaning were assessed by the Asthma Council’s independent advisory panel – including a Respiratory Physician, Allergist and General Practitioner – and deemed suitable to carry the Sensitive Choice blue butterfly logo. Only products and services that show a potential benefit for people with asthma or allergies can participate in the Sensitive Choice program. Electrodry is committed to supporting the more than 40% of Australians who suffer from allergies and asthma. By developing the Electrodry cleaning systems to improve the

health of families the local Electrodry team based in Pomona are able to give something back to customers and help make a difference in their lives. Improving the health of customers is just as important as improving the appearance of their carpet and furnishings. While outdoor allergies generally peak in spring, dust and mould inside the home can trigger reactions at any time of the year. Asthma attacks or respiratory infections can sometimes follow. Electrodry cleaning systems remove the allergens, including mould spores and dust, from soft furnishings and carpet. The Electrodry healthy mattress service also removes dust mites and their excrement from mattresses, both of which are significant triggers for asthma and eczema sufferers. Local owner-operator Brendan Jones recommends weekly vacuuming with a HEPA filter vacuum and twice-yearly cleaning with the Electrodry cleaning sys-

tems. This will significantly reduce the asthma triggers within a home. For over 20 years Electrodry has been Australia’s most trusted name for carpet, upholstery and mattress cleaning for both residential

and commercial premises. It delivers high quality service to over 100,000 clients nationally, every year. For more information please contact the LOCAL Electrodry office on 13 27 13 or 5485 1170.

selves, the “inner self” that has all the answers ... they give us back the belief in ourselves that WE ARE enough, that we do not have to keep searching for the answers outside ... we only need to look deeper inside Horses do not buy into emotional baggage, they do not hide behind excuses like “I’m not good enough”, or ‘I can’t do it” they take us to the level where we can believe in ourselves enough to achieve our goals Over the past few years we have seen an increase in how domestic animals are now widely accepted as beneficial to human health, how specially trained dogs are being used in early detection of epilepsy, learning difficulties and other human ailments. It has even been reported that cats can detect illness and pre-empt death Holistequine horses and their human facilitator are extensively trained to pre-empt disturbances at all levels of the health spectrum, be it physical, emotional/mental or Spiritual Horses have the ability to “detect” any emotional, mental and even physical problems at the blueprint (Spiritual) level of a person’s energy field and have the ability to perceive things beyond the five senses ... they can “read” disruptions in the human aura before they manifest physically. The key to the Holistequine success lies in the fact that the human facilitator has also been trained to the same perceptive vibratory level as their horse life coach partner enabling them to “read” information relayed through the horse’s response. Through years of research into human/animal communication as we started to attract clients and students it became clear that something very powerful was at work here. People would arrive with headaches, sinus problems and an array of minor ailments that

would disappear after being around our horses. Many people with depression or emotional issues would cry and release old programming while working with a horse of their choice ... the horses were having an effect at a depth that no human practitioner could reach. We now believe through our experiences with horses that they tap into the level of “dis-ease of the Spirit” and that many of the diseases seen as a problem by orthodox standards are easily resolved by simply realigning the human Spirit Holistequine has many practical private and group programs for a range of health and social issues including Personal Life Coaching, Parenting and pre-parenting workshops, Assertiveness Training, Successful Relationships, Children’s Development Coaching, Corporate and Workplace Programs, At risk youth, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, Children and Adults self esteem, Health and Lifestyle Coaching, Women’s Empowerment Classes, Weight Management Coaching, Stress /Anger management www.holistequine.com Ph 07 5442 5353.

Holding on to the housing dream

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management HAVE you recently purchased your first home or are you saving for one? Either way, if the outlook seems rather gloomy and you feel stressed, you are not alone. An income and wealthreport released in July 2011 by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) at the University of Canberra and AMP, titled The Great Australian Dream – Just a Dream? confirms that Australian housing has become severely unaffordable in the last 10 years. The AMP.NATSEM report reveals that it will take another 10 years for this situation to remedy itself, provided house prices remain flat and there is growth in incomes. Will we see it through? As Craig Meller, Managing Director of AMP Financial Services says, “We’re a country that’s nothing if not determined. There are still many people entering the property market or preparing to do so.”Two measures have been used to determine housing affordability: The house price to household income ratio, in which as the ratio increases, housing affordability decreases; and housing stress based on the proportion of income spent on housing costs.Home ownership is ingrained deep into the Australian psyche, but with ever-increasing housing prices it has become harder for people to enter the housing market. In the space of a decade, median house prices grew 147% to $417,000, while median after-tax incomes only increased 50% to $57,000. This pushed the price to income ratio from an affordable 4.7 to a severely unaffordable 7.3 today.Sydney is the least affordable capital city with a median price of $510,000, while Hobart is the cheapest at $326,000. Suburban housing too is out of

reach. Only 4% of suburbs in the five major capital cities remain affordable. Inner city Melbourne contains Australia’s least affordable houses. This does not mean regional areas are any more affordable. Non-capital city areas in four out of seven states and territories have experienced the greatest rate of house price growth. According to Ben Phillips, principal research fellow at NATSEM and lead author of the report, unaffordable housing has become a country-wide issue, no longer constrained to the capital cities.Even when people enter the housing market, they are under enormous stress. The report states nearly one in 10 buyer households spend at least half their after-tax income on housing. Among the most vulnerable are first home buyers, single persons, single parent households and renters.Purchasing a house may be the largest investment you make in your life. For this to be a reality and a success in an inflated market, it helps to do some careful long-term planning. This may mean living with parents for longer, opting for an apartment over a house, downsizing or saving for longer. Setting up a savings plan for you and your children is another step you could take. Not only will you be securing your future, but you will also be providing a stable base for your children to enter the housing market when they are ready. A financial planner can help you by designing a plan to suit your individual circumstances within the resources available to you. It is all about being creative to achieve your home ownership goal, about adapting to prosper. So, call us today to discuss your housing needs and to make your housing dream come true.

IN 2011 sisters Rennae Miers and Melanie Dow went gift shopping at the famous Eumundi Markets, after which they decided to continue their day out to the historical Heart of the Hinterland, Cooroy. “It was such a great day, we wanted to keep shopping, and Cooroy was such a gorgeous town,” said Melanie. We were amazed at the people perusing the town and enjoying a coffee but there was nowhere to shop for those cute, country, chic items that we assumed would be aplenty in such an iconic country town.” Rennae and Melanie and their sisters Karen and Rachael, grew up in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast on a horse stud called Cimaron Painthorse Stud so nothing could be more natural to these girls than pure country style. “Melanie and I have the same style and trust in each others tastes. But we encourage you to come on in and share your style with us,” said Rennae. Rennae and Melanie

are no strangers to the retail business either, following four generations of retail stores. Their Great Grandfather Edmond was proprietor of Trewin’s Blacksmiths NSW in the early 20s, his son Stan Trewin also known as Mr Fixit, founded ‘Trewin’s Sports’ in Maroubra Sydney in 1935. Trewin Sports was running for over 50 years, and Parents Helen and Ray Louden opened “Manchester World’ in Nambour in 1982 and “The Muscle Beach Gym’ in Marcoola in 1990, highly successful businesses that are still well known by name throughout the Sunshine Coast. “Our family has always been a staple for business on the Sunshine Coast and we can’t wait to be next,” said Melanie. “Growing up all four of us remember working and learning the ropes in the retail industry with the family. “After 40 years sharing the same style and taste in home decor the opportunity was perfect to open their own store,

Maple Lane Country Gifts. “We love the History in Cooroy! Our shop at 14 Maple Street was originally a blacksmith’s that was fully operational right up until 1980.” However a venture like this is never easy and on the day the lease was signed Rennae and Melanie’s eldest sister Karen Jeffrey, a breast cancer survivor and a great inspiration for Rennae and Melanie, was diagnosed with Leptomenangiel, an inoperable form of cancer in the brain. “Our big sister is our inspiration and motivation to live your dreams and live them now! she is so excited for opening day her involvement means the world to us,” says Rennae. “Maple Lane Country Gifts will be stocking Breast cancer fundraising items in support. Nothing is more important than finding a cure.” Join Melanie and Rennae for the Grand Opening of Maple Lane Country Gifts on June 4th.

Meeting about dingo problem ESCALATING community concern over the growing dingo/wild dog problems in the Mount Eerwah area has resulted in local resident Eileen Walder organising a meeting with Council Pest and Vector Control Officer, Peter Bell at Belli Hall on Friday 1 June.”It is important we tackle this as everyone’s problem otherwise we just chase the dogs onto neighborouing properties,” Eileen said.Mr Bell will listen to residents’ concerns, hear their experiences with attacks on pets, loss of livestock and fears for their children’s safety. He will present suggestions and implications for handling the problem and finding a solution to meet public approval. Many residents have lost livestock and must lock away valuable animals, including alpacas and poultry. “Some are told by Council, that it is their own responsibilty to get rid of the problem but how can you do that alone when it is such a major widespread problem?” Eileen said. Several people have witnessed what appear to be pure dingoes right in Eumundi township and walking along the Kenilworth Road.”Pet dogs have even been grabbed from verandahs. Quite sturdy, fearless animals like my own Norwegian Elkhound, have required expensive vet treatment after an attack. Smaller dogs, newborn calves, goats and geese don’t stand a chance.” Eileen said.Residents claim the dingoes make such a noise at night that sleep is often disturbed.Several residents have already installed night vision cameras to record the dogs prowling over an extensive area. “I thought it would just be a handful of my neighbours involved,”Eileen said, “but my phone has been running hot with angry and concerned people from North Arm to Belli. Now we can unite and demand action.”The meeting which begins at 6pm on 1 June is open to all concerned residents.

news

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott IT’S not very often that I have a reason to criticise members of the Cooroy community but on this occasion I need to give some complacent locals a little lesson in how to help police to keep Cooroy a safe place to live. Lately the Cooroy police have been dealing with a spate of house and vehicle unlawful entries around the CBD and Cudgerie Estate. The good news is that we have apprehended and dealt with a 16 year old youth for numerous offences which should see this type of offence brought back under control but the bad news is that a number of these offences should never have occurred in the first place. Over a period of several nights, youths were seen by several residents sneaking around late at night. These youths were seen in back yards and on verandas etc peering through windows wearing dark clothing and hoodies and obviously intent on a very unlawful purpose. Unfortunately the police were not advised of these offenders until the next morning when several cars and houses were reported broken into by their owners. This happened twice in one week with extensive police inquiries and forensic examinations revealing several suspects but with insufficient evidence no arrests were made. It was only when one of the previous victims to one of the burglary offences was arriving home one evening spotted several males acting suspiciously near her house has phoned the police who attended within minutes apprehending the offend-

ers carrying stolen goods. Police would much rather prevent such offences occurring by patrolling and actively seeking out offenders before they have committed the offence rather than solving the crime after it has occurred. I understand that some people may not want to get involved with the police and report crime and maybe have better things to be doing rather than phoning the police but to me the presence of youths sneaking around your house late at night spells trouble and fine to run out and tell them to nick off but that just looks after your property and does nothing for the property down the road where these offenders then ran off too. Please Please Please consider the bigger picture and report any such behaviour to the police so we are aware of the issue and can take the appropriate action. Thanks to the quick phone call made by one of the victims and the quick response by the local police we were able to solve numerous offences and more importantly prevent others from occurring. The issue of people not locking their vehicles or houses continues to be a problem. In most (not all) of the reported offences lately the vehicles and houses have not been properly secured which makes the job of the dishonest person all the more easier so make sure you lock your vehicle and house when leaving it unattended. Police will be walking around town leaving friendly reminders on unlocked cars to “Lock it or lose it.” Please remember that Cooroy is still a very safe place to live as our crime rates are well

down on other areas of the Coast and the associated clear up rates well above other areas. This fact is no fluke but is testament to the local community taking responsibility for their own safety on most occasions and assisting the police wherever possible.

Volunteer with the Noosa Biosphere It is National Volunteer Week and the Noosa Biosphere is looking for passionate and interested individuals to fill vacancies on a number of the Community Sector Boards and the Governance Board. THE Pomona Primary School has formed a Grant Proposal Committee, which has been working hard to secure a Government Grant to obtain solar heating for the Pomona Community Swimming pool. The Committee also aims to improve the pool facilities, by renovating the change rooms, heating the showers, erecting a shade sail, and replacing the pool cover. Pomona State School houses the only public pool for a community of 2000+ residents, and further populations in surrounding townships. The facility offers a 6 lane, 25 metre pool, which provides lap/recreational swimming, squad coaching, water aerobics, and learn-to-swim classes. The pool provides curriculum based swimming lessons, and swimming carnivals to 5 schools including Pomona, Federal, Cooran and Kin Kin primary schools, as well as Noosa District State High School – Pomona Campus. This fine asset has the potential to offer local families all levels of learning and recreation, due to its central location, being walking distance for all Pomona town residents. Our pool is very well utilised during the middle of summer, and we would like to extend its use by a few months per year. Many Pomona and surrounding area residents have expressed their need, for local swimming lessons that accommodate the Baby to Toddler age group. Due to the cool water temperature, lessons are not offered for Babies and Toddlers outside of the summer school holidays. This gives this precious age group only a 6 week introduction to water safety, which leaves parents needing to find alternate lessons for the remainder of the year. All parents agree that this is an extremely important time for their children’s development of water safety and social interaction. We know that drowning is the leading cause of acci-

dental death for toddlers in Australia, with 30% of deaths occurring in Queensland. Those who would also benefit from the upgrade to a heated pool would include, locals that suffer from arthritis, chronic pain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart failure and those who need rehabilitation after injuries. The closest heated public pools are, Eumundi 25kms away, and Noosa 36kms away. Public transport in the Noosa hinterland is very limited. It does not provide a convenient schedule to the above locations. The Pomona Pool not only provides a learning environment for our young community, it provides rehabilitation for all ages, training for sporting teams, school swimming sessions for Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin students, lap swimming, fun and recreation, and it helps keep our community fit and healthy. The official opening of the pool was in November 1984, and with the 30 year anniversary looming, there is no time like the present, to upgrade and improve this wonderful asset, to better cater for the wider community. So if you would like to get behind our passionate cause, we would love to hear from you, and learn how it would benefit you. We are looking for people from our community with the skills, licenses and/or contacts to provide quotes for the following works: · Installation of solar heating with grid connection; Renovation/Upgrade of change rooms with installation of heated showers; Installation of shade sail over the pool; Heavy duty pool cover; Website/blog designer. If interested, please contact the Pomona P&C Committee @ psspandc@hotmail.com. Or if interested in joining the committee, please contact Ben Wright benzw70@gmail.com

COOROY RAG

There needs to be good reason for Sergeant Mal and his two children, Molly and Charlie to miss pitching in at our Blue Light Disco but on Saturday the 14th April as 80 local kids kicked up their heels and danced the night away for the April disco, just up the road, Molly celebrated her 16th birthday under the watchful eye of Dad, surrounded by friends and family. With a duke box, Karaoke machine and a 5 metre blowups twister game on offer, there was no excuse for anyone not to have a heap of fun … despite the rain. Happy Birthday to Indi who turns 3 on May 29. Thank you for your beautiful smiles and for bringing so much joy to my life. I love you, Meme

Joanna Ford recently celebrated her 18th birthday by having to cast her first ever vote on election day (the same day as her 18th). Happy Birthday Joanna, and may your life continue to prosper. Love you always, Dad, Mum, Nathanael & Grandma.

Katrina Parry married Carl Riethmuller in March at Noosa Springs, they honeymooned in Fiji and now living in Gympie. Katina was born & raised in Cooroy and used to work at Pete’s Café & at Paul Bones for many years. Page 16 - Cooroy Rag, May 23, 2012

Congratulations to Marcella Bowden who attended Noosa High and has recently graduated from QUT Uni with distinctions. She is now working at the RPA Hospital in Sydney as a Medical Radiologist. Marcella is celebrating her 21st birthday on 7th May with family at The Waterfront Restaurant Noosaville.

Congratulations to Elise O’Brien and Trent Oldman who were married on the 14th of April 2012

Cooroora Woodworkers Show attracts hundreds HUNDREDS of people invaded the tiny hinterland town of Cooroy recently for the annual Cooroora Woodcrafters Exhibition and sale at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington, who officially opened the exhibition, congratulated members of the Woodcrafters on their outstanding work. Mr Wellington said the exhibition which is in its 20th year was an asset to the community and gave members a chance to make new friends and learn a fascinating craft. “You can be justifiably proud of the work that is here today,” he said. “It would compare with the finest in the land.” Mr Wellington said the exhibition attracted a huge amount of interest from across the region. “Your hard work and expertise in putting on this exhibition has brought people to the town of Cooroy and provided a welcome boost to the local economy.” On show was a huge selection of beautifully made items using a wide variety of timber, many of which were for sale at reasonable prices. Pictured from left: Cooroora Woodcrafters Charli Cobb, Nicklin MP Peter Wellington, and Woodcrafters Dennis Donnelly and George Pearce.

Mary Rose Long and son Greg (member of the Noosa Volunteer radio station 101.3fm) from Tewantin won the major raffle at the Cooroora Woodworkers Show last weekend, pictured with President Dennis Donnelly. Mr Donnelly would like to thank the community for their wonderful support over the weekend.

COOROY Shoes are ‘Over the Moon’, having just opened their first clothing and accessories store. After having to relocate while our roof was replaced, we were fortunate to find a temporary home in Garnet Street. Nestled between ‘Lets Talk Hair’ and ‘Dhoms Kitchen’ the shop has a lovely feel and all agreed it was an ideal choice for expanding the accessories side of the business. On entering, the comment is usually how bright and colourful the store looks and how reasonable the prices are. With new stock arriving every week, we will be able to offer an exciting selection of ever changing products for our customers, and can source those difficult to find gifts. Clothing includes layering pieces to take you through the seasons, tunics to wear with leggings and jeans, gorgeous modal - a natural fibre that feels so luxurious against the skin, crushes that need no ironing and beautiful silk, all terrific for our relaxed lifestyle and great for travelling as they need very little care. Along with an extensive array of jewellery, featuring colourful and eclectic style, we will be stocking a range of affordable non leather bags and wallets, perfect for home and travel or just for fun. With items like the Groovy Grannies tea cosies and funky luggage tags, ipad covers, cosmetic bags and jewellery holders there are gifts for all occassions. Don’t forget the essential winter accessory- the scarf, in all colours and textures and arriving now. Linda, Karen, Cazz and Wilhelmina will be instore to help you with all your needs when visiting the Cooroy Shoes and Accessories store or its new sister shop, Over the Moon , in Garnet Street, opposite the Cooroy Hotel. Thankyou Cooroy for your continued support for our business and the overwhelming well wishes expressed by our customers. What a fabulous town to be a part of.

COOROY RAG Cooran Acoustic Night THE Cooran Acoustic Night for May has been changed a couple of times, so please note that this long-running community event is happening again on Saturday 26th May, 7pm start. The Cooran Acoustic Night is a chance for amateurs and professionals alike to warm the Cooran Hall stage with wonderful performances of songs, poetry, dance, juggling and more. The upcoming event on 26th May promises to be another awesome night. The chalkboard always attracts a great mix of experienced entertainers and the raw charms of those who might be stepping up to the mic for the first thrilling time. The board is open to anyone who wants to give it a go. The event boasts an Organic cafe with delicious soup, cakes, tea and other treats. The event is family friendly, with some children even lighting up the stage themselves! Entry is only $4.00! Come early if you want to be part of the show.

ON Saturday 2 June Dhoms Kitchen will present a set menu based on Thai street food favourites from Spencer’s and Dhom’s travels through Thailand. Dishes will include Steamed Buns, Tapioca Dumplings filled with Savoury-sweet Pork, Hainanese Poached Chicken and Rice, Egg Noodle Soup with Crispy Wontons and warm taro dumplings in coconut milk. The price is just $48 per person including corkage and jasmine tea. Bookings are essential. “As much as Dhom and I love dining in restaurants in beautiful settings in Thailand, there is something intoxicating about food on the street.” says Spencer. “Street food is fresh and fast. Dishes are made to order, but can often take less than a minute to prepare. Portions are often small and inexpensive which allows you to have several meals during the course of day. You can eat for a tenth of the price of eating in a restaurant. Thais are food crazy and will travel across Bangkok just for a particular dish.” For Thais, eating on the street in Thailand is just about the food. There is no decor nor ambience. You sit at metal tables on plastic stools using cheap cutlery, crockery and plastic cups. For first-time visitors to Thailand eating on the street is an exhilarating experience: the energy and intensity of the street-side location, the smells and sounds of the cooking, orders being shouted above the traffic noise to the kitchen, the camaraderie amongst vendors, traffic whizzing past your table. Street food vendors in Thailand vary

from small operations that may involve just a single wok and a couple of foldup tables and stools through to huge operations with up to 100 seats where at the end of each day cooking equipment and furniture is stored at a nearby location. In the early morning the vendor will bring the fresh ingredients and freshly prepared food to their street food site. Not all street food is simple cuisine. Since the early 1980s, with Thai having busier lives and less time to cook at home, many of the complex home dishes have now found their way to the streets. Dhoms Kitchen was recently listed in the Queensland Times Good Food Guide. Winter Hours: Lunch: WednesdayFriday 11.30am-2.00pm; Dinner: Wednesday-Saturday from 5.30pm. 1a Garnet St., Cooroy ph. 5447 7710. Find us on Facebook & Twitter: @dhomskitchen

Travel Health YOU’RE about to go off on a 2 month trip of a lifetime with your family. Mum, dad and two kids, say 8 and 10 years old. You’re flying to Vietnam, travelling up through South East Asia and then onto Nepal. What travel advice and/or vaccinations do you need? Well first off, get relevant travel insurance. I saw a patient recently who had a ten minute hospital visit for a relatively minor problem whilst in the USA. Cost? $900! Many credit cards provide insurance as part of the card so enquire regarding that but get it sorted out as a priority. Despite all the talk regarding vaccinations against infectious diseases statistically the medical event most likely to happen is still a simple accident resulting in say, a broken bone. Secondly, get a first aid kit together. Some paracetamol, a few simple dressings, a bandage, some antiseptic, sun block, gastro stop for diarrhoea, rehydration sachets such as gastrolyte, an antihistamine, etc. The contents may vary depending on what you are doing, e.g. if it is a trekking holiday make sure you have some equipment to treat blistered feet! I lost 10kg on a 2 month trekking holiday in Pakistan once and I’m sure it was the gastrolyte that kept me out of hospital! Regarding the vaccinations, first make sure the family are up to date with what we regard as the routine immunisations in Australia. Measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), polio and flu. If you’re not immunised against these then consider it before you travel. For instance measles is widespread in parts of Asia and worldwide kills about half a million, mostly children, each year. Other vaccinations depend on where you go and will vary. In general however you would want to consider Hep A and Typhoid, both water borne diseases. A booster of Hep A 6-12 months later will give you probable lifelong protection but Typhoid

has to be given every 3 years. No vaccination is 100% effective and is not a substitute for trying to ensure that the water or food source is a clean as can be expected. Hep B immunisation is also useful as it is very common in South East Asia and especially for those likely to be exposed to body fluids. Rabies is also common where you are going and as kids tend to play with small animals they are at a higher risk of being bitten and so contracting the disease. Minimising exposure to animals is most important here but depending on your schedule Rabies vaccination should be considered. Malaria is spread by mosquito bites. First step is therefore long sleeve tops and trousers, and insect repellent, with mosquito nets to sleep under. Anti malarial protection will vary a lot. Coastal Vietnam and at altitude above 1200m in Nepal presents no significant issue but more lowland forested areas will require preventative treatment. There is a fair amount of drug resistance these days so check you get the medication relevant for a particular area. Remember, keep it going at least 2 weeks after you return. At high altitude people can often get altitude sickness. This can become apparent above about 3000m. People vary as to how they respond but severe headaches, breathing difficulties and confusion should alert you to the danger. The main preventative action for altitude sickness is slow ascent and if despite this it still happens then descent is required. Medications such as Diamox can be obtained from your GP and can lessen to some degree the symptoms but should never be used as a substitute to slow ascent and descent if in trouble. Ready to go? Have a great trip. Something you will never forget, for all the right reasons. Dr Ken Corbett, Maple Street Surgery

Sitting is major risk COOROY residents are being warned to get off their backsides or risk long-term spinal damage and developing chronic diseases. That’s the message from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) who is urging residents to Sit Right this Spinal Health Week (21 – 27 May). As part of the week, local chiropractor Dr Adam Roache is launching the CAA’s Sit Right campaign, a national initiative designed to prompt Australians to prioritise their spinal health and take note of the dangers of the simple act of sitting. Dr Adam Roache said prolonged sitting can have dire health consequences as our bodies are designed for movement, not a sedentary lifestyle. “Australians are spending more time than ever sitting which is placing immense pressure on their spines. For optimum spinal health, we need to get out of our chairs. “Many people are also sitting incorrectly so it’s important they look at the CAA’s Sit Right checklist to ensure they maintain good posture and prevent back pain he said. Tips from the checklist include: Keep your hips, elbows and knees at open angles (slightly more than 90 degrees); Recline slightly to ease lower back pressure; Ensure your feet are flat on the floor or on a footrest; Factor in short, regular breaks from sitting to stretch, stand, change or correct your posture or walk around the office. For Spinal Health Week, the CAA has also launched a free Sit Right widget, which can be downloaded to help prompt you to take regular breaks. To promote the message that a healthy spine leads to a healthier life, Dr Adam Roache is holding FREE spinal scans for the entire family until 1st June 2012. “Spinal Health Week is a great reminder to make an appointment with your local CAA chiropractor to assess your spinal health and discuss how a more active lifestyle will improve your overall wellbeing,” said Dr Adam Roache. Chiropractors, who are five years university trained, are experts at analysing posture and spinal problems and can provide expert care, lifestyle and exercise advice. For advice on how to Sit Right or to download the free widget, visit www.SitRight.com.au and for a posture assessment, contact Life Enhancing Chiropractic, your local CAA chiropractor. For further information on Spinal Health Week 2012; chiropractic care in Cooroy, please contact: Life Enhancing Chiropractic phone 5472 0808.

Having a healthy child does not stop at conception. Receiving the proper support during pregnancy can help to minimise recurrent miscarriages as well as other complications. Preparing for the time when you become pregnant and having the right physical and emotional treatment and support structure will further promote your full term healthy pregnancy. Acupuncture is an integral component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a wholistic system of healthcare continually practiced and developed throughout Asia for many thousands of years. TCM has developed specialised treatments for women in promoting fertility, pregnancy care and postpartum recovery. Today TCM care is become increasingly valued in Australia, as it is in New Zealand, England, Germany and France where acupuncture is available

in specialised antenatal clinics and maternity hospitals. Pregnancy, child birth and postnatal recovery are viewed in TCM as a window of opportunity to enhance and support the woman’s wellbeing. Value is therefore placed on offering preventive care to strengthen the mother and baby as well as dealing with problems as they occur during pregnancy. TCM offers a safe, effective alternative for treatment of pain and discomfort during labour and the birthing process and is a great alternative to western medicine drugs. Moreover, it provides an excellent compliment to midwifery, doula, and obstetrical care. Amy Steinbeck, Doctor of Chinese Medicine at Maple St Acupuncture & Natural Medicine, uses her experience, knowledge and compassion when supporting women through their pregnancies. 12a Maple St, Cooroy. 5442 5526.

Arthritis – Don’t let the cold weather slow you down THE term arthritis means joint inflammation. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthris (OA), which refers to degeneration of the joint surfaces. This degeneration leads to pain, stiffness, weakness, instability and sometimes locking and swelling. The most common joints to be affected are the large weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips, as well as the spine, hands and feet. OA can be caused by

an injury to the joint or from repetitive stress and strain. As the joint surfaces begin to degenerate, they become stiff, painful, inflamed and can sometimes begin to form bony growths called osteophytes. The muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding the joints often become tight and tender and ultimately weak. As the cold weather approaches, sufferers of OA find that their symptoms often increase. So what can we do about

OA. Well, once the damage is done to the joint, you can’t actually reverse that. But there are a great deal of treatment options to help manage the condition and prevent it from getting significantly worse. Gentle exercise is important to keep the joints moving as freely as possible. Strengthening the muscles around the joint also help to cushion the joint and prevent excessive negative joint movements. With arthritis of

the spine, core stability exercises help to stabilise the damaged joints, much like braces and supports do. Hands on physiotherapy techniques are very important for pain relief and optimising the muscle function around the joint. Physio’s use a variety of techniques such as joint mobilisation, muscle releases, acupuncture and electrotherapy to help minimise pain and improve function. Hydrotherapy is another useful treat-

ment technique which allows the joints to be exercised in a warm, relatively weightless environment. Physiotherapists can also advise on appropriate braces or supports to help in more symptomatic cases. If you are suffering with the pain of arthritis, speak to a health professional about what can be done to help with your condition. Rebecca Steele owns Hinteractive Physio and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

The Calorie Counting Myth A LOW calorie diet is the most popular answer for weight loss but the problem is that it often doesn’t work. The logic of calorie counting is simple: eat less calories than you burn. Conversely, weight gain results from a surplus of calories. This theory incorrectly assumes all calories, regardless of whether they come from carbohydrates, proteins, or fats, are all the same and thus are treated the same in our bodies. Not all calories are treated the same by your body. Further, really low or high calorie diets cause your metabolism to react differently. If you aren’t meeting your daily energy requirements, your body reacts by shutting down many processes to conserve energy. One such process is your metabolism, which doesn’t get turned off, but is reduced by as much as 30% in efficiency. A slow metabolism means it takes

longer to burn the calories. The effect of other processes being halted or reduced, leaves you feeling lethargic and unable to focus. The only way to solve this is to eat and eventually you will. So you’ll go back to eating the amount that your body requires. This yo-yo effect with your calorie intact actually causes permanent damage to your metabolism, and has little-to-no effect on weight loss/gain. Further, numerous studies show that the time of the day and the frequency of the meals have a huge impact on how fast food is metabolized. A person who eats two 1200 calorie meals will lose significantly less body fat than the one who consumes six 400 calorie meals even though in both cases the same calories are eaten. More energy is used up in the morning to process food than at night and more energy is used immediately after a workout.

Further, if many of your calories come from carbs, insulin is released to utilize those carbs. Over time, the insulin drives your blood sugar down to dangerously low levels. You can’t sleep, exercise, work, or think. This condition is known as hypoglycaemia. Most of all, you’re extremely hungry. The worst part is that while your insulin is up, about 25% of the calories consumed are immediately stored as fat, bypassing the opportunity to be broken down for energy. It sounds pretty complex and can be overwhelming when all you want to do is lose weight. The answer to this is to get help and advice from an expert. Make a Difference Health & Fitness can help you develop a weight loss program that ensures you get results. Give them a call on 5442 6179 or visit their website on www.madhf.com.au.

Experience the essence of Aloha with Francoise MASSAGE belongs to the realm of natural therapeutics, and as such it is based on certain principles. These principles are complementary and the main ones are: Aloha, Life Force & Ying-Yang. Aloha…The literal meaning of Aloha is “the presence of breath” or “the breath of life.” Aloha is a way of living and treating each other with love and respect. Its deep meaning starts by teaching ourselves to love our own beings first and afterwards to spread the love to others. According to the old kahunas (priests), being able to live the Spirit of Aloha was a way of reaching self-perfection and realization for our own body and soul. Aloha is sending and receiving a positive energy. Aloha is living in harmony. When you live the Spirit of Aloha, you create positive feelings and thoughts, which are never gone. They exist in space, multiply and spread over to others. Life Force … There is nothing more fundamental than life itself. Whatever our spiritual beliefs or other differences, we are all alive. Life is something we all take so much for granted. In its essence it is completely intangible; you cannot see it, touch it, smell it… and yet we all believe that we will continue to breathe for the next five minutes, and for the rest of our life, without any conscious effort. Life is present in everything. In a living thing – a plant or a human being – it is causing dynamic change, moving, flowing, loving. This all-pervading life force is continually bringing about a state of health and harmony in the body. It is this power which is responsible for every activity taking place; it regulates temperature, blood pressure, respiration and deli-

cate balance of chemicals in our body. Our bodies are a miracle of divine engineering; and they do not only contain flesh and bone, they contain us! If we recognize the existence of this life force, and that it is the only power which can produce health within us, we will realize that we must work with it and not against it. Yin and Yang… The physical universe was created when Oneness became duality, and we can see this duality, this Yin and Yang, everywhere in the universe, in every atom, every action, and in every function of the human body. Yin and Yang are manifest everywhere, except at the very centre of being, the perfect point of balance, at that infinite moment when future becomes past. Really there is only one thing, one energy, one consciousness, but in order to manifest itself it becomes Yin and Yang. In striving for health and harmony we try to find that point of balance between Yin and Yang. Massage plays a very important role in the state of health and harmony in the body. Massage is enjoyable to perform, and relaxing to receive; it is one of the best ways to relieve the stress and tension that most of us suffer from these days. Massage also provides the means for patienthealer contact, which is very important factor in healing, and is an easy and direct form of communication. Francoise’s massage therapy prides itself on providing wonderfully relaxing massages. Her hands are extremely sensitive, but as well as being tools for feeling, they are instruments of communication, to communicates healing power. She uses beautiful scented coconut oil when she gives a

massage, which is called Aromatherapy Massage. When using oils in aromatic massage, apart from the fact that the essences penetrate the skin, there is the added benefit of the massage itself, and also a psychological effect from the presence of the aroma. With her years of practice, Francoise has created beautiful recipes of massage that combine Kahuna (Hawaiian), Swedish, Neuromuscular, Shiatsu, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Facial, Reiki… Every massage she gives is different, because every patient has different needs. Finally, Francoise’s massage is mantric; she will take you (the patient) out of yourself for a time… to experience the essence of Aloha. To book a massage, contact Francoise on 0409 069 782 or francoisem@live.com.au

Mill Place ‘Everyone Counts’ evening

A WINE and Cheese evening was held at Cooroy Library to celebrate our wonderful volunteers and acknowledge their efforts throughout the year. Tex Pipke, a Cooroy Lower Mill Board member spoke on Volunteering and congratulated our volunteers in being part of approximately 6 million volunteers Australia wide that contribute every day to make a difference. The Friends of Mill Place volunteer group presented our inaugural National Volunteer Week Certificate of Appreciation to Margaret Brown who works tirelessly for our Friends group. Ross Duncan, Manager of Library and Gallery Services presented the volunteers with a free workshop voucher for the Butter Factory Arts Centre valued at $55 as a token of appreciation. The cheese for the evening was donated by Kenilworth Cheese and Cooroy IGA donated crackers, soft drinks and the group was very thankful

for their kind involvement. Our volunteers are involved in many events and activities throughout the year including, staffing and stocking the Retail Store - a major fundraiser that stocks second hand and donated books and wonderful wood and ceramic pieces crafted here on the Mill Place Precinct by the Cooroora Woodworkers, Camphor Laurel Initiative and the Butter Factory Arts Centre pottery artists. Yearly events including Cooroy Fusion, The Pink Precinct Fun Trail which raises funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation, weekly Home Services delivering books and items to the house bound, twice weekly Justice of the Peace sessions, tutoring in Literacy skills and children’s holiday activities and the list goes on. This is a very vibrant group of community minded men and women and we are very proud of and thankful to them.

Scouting About WELL it was a very busy weekend at the woodworkers fair for scout families. There wasn’t quite as many people on the Friday, but it picked up on Saturday for a fairly busy day. Plenty of food and drinks were made and sold and it was great to see how well everybody worked together, without too many hitches! Thanks to all those who gave up there time to help out, and to the Gympie Cooloola Food Service for the donation of the pie warmer, and the Golden Nugget Truck Stop for the ham they donated. Thanks also go to the Cooroy Woodworkers for giving us the catering opportunity, and a big thank-you to Kim for all her time and effort. It is a weekend of hard work but well worth it. We look forward to next years. The mothers of any Cubs enjoyed a special heart biscuit (decorated by the cubs themselves) as a special mothers day treat. We hope that mothers everywhere had a little something special done for them to celebrate all the love and learning they share with their children! The Cubs have also been doing a lot of individual work with a number of badges being presented over the last few weeks and a few new members inducted. The Scouts have also been receiving a lot of badges, which is great to see as it means that they

are working on improving themselves on a weekly basis. A couple of Grey Wolf badges were accepted by a small group of the newer scouts, which is the highest Cub award. Again it is a delight to see such a thriving group. There are a couple of scout camps coming up in early June. The first is just a local one at Camp Cooroora (Lake McDonald) as a practise run for the big 3 day regional camp in Brisbane. SSS Camp involves the Scouts preparing and setting up their camp and food themselves, for a weekend of various activities. These include pioneering, abseiling, woodworking, archery and many others. Should be another great notch on the Scouting belt! Don’t forget the next Car Boot Sale, June 3rd at the Scout Den. Due to increased popularity of our boot sales, it is important that sites are pre booked early. Time: 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Come and explore – there are lots of great bargains. The Scouts will be ‘cooking up a storm’ with their sausage sizzle and scrumptious bacon and egg burgers. All bookings please contact Kathy on 5485-2368. Hearing Breakthrough

WOULD you like to hear better? Technology just released allows you to do so. This technology has received widespread coverage in the news. And people are getting amazing results. Hearing industry experts agree it is the biggest improvement in hearing technology since the release of digital hearing devices. And research shows it can greatly improve your quality of life. The patented technology shifts you into a world of clarity. A world where you understand what is said. And a world where you’re aware of your surroundings. It allows you to hear better on the phone. Voices come through smoothly and clearly. Everyone can watch TV at the same volume. You can set the TV to the level others prefer and still follow what’s said. Soft sounds are heard clearly. You’ll hear the whisper of a child’s voice. And the sound

of footsteps from a distance. Loud noises are decreased. So your hearing sounds as natural as possible. 3HRSOH ZLOO ÂżQG LW HDVLHU WR talk to you. You’ll understand what they say. And you’ll respond correctly. Attending large gatherings will be enjoyable again. You’ll no longer be distracted by low level background noises. And you’ll have more energy to understand, as listening will require less effort. Robert Ryan, a long time hearing device user, has experienced great success with the new technology. He said: “Oh there was no question, once I had them for WKH ÂżUVW VHFRQGV , NQHZ that I wasn’t going to let these things out of my ears.â€? “I was amazed how well I adapted to them. I can actually hear people coming up behind me and talking to me. The only time I take them out is when I go to sleep.â€? In summary, the technology helps you stay connected to the world around you. This patented technology is available at Acoustic Hearing Clinics. Acoustic Hearing Clinics was established in Cooroy in 1998. All clinics are family owned and operate with traditional values. Their staff believe in treating you well. They also believe that getting to know you is the best

Open Saturday & Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm So how do you beautify your property? 1. You start with a plan. Develop a plan which takes into consideration your goals, your properties strengths and weaknesses, your budget and one that is potentially attractive to others. 2. The clean-up. In most cases “if in doubt get rid of it” is the best policy. 3. Clear your property of weeds. 4. Grass – gardens and trees – or weeds. 5. Fencing and an accompanying management plan. Typically acreages and farms need grazing as well as mowing or slashing. The management of your pastures is too big a

subject to handle here, suffice to say you need paddocks and fences that will allow you and your stock to keep your grass and weeds under control. 6. Water. Water can turn an ordinary property into a beautiful one. Look to enhance your property’s appeal by making the most of what water you have or developing new water features. 7. Features. Once you have the basics in place you can then look to add features. The improvements possible on a farm or acreage are endless, and often quite spectacular. MEMBERS of the Cooroy Golf Club attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for their newly built ‘Brad Lavender Shed’ last week. Club Manager, Wayne Patson, officially thanked Ritek for their generous contribution of materials for the project which added around $40,000 worth of improvements to the club. He also thanked local builder and club member Brad Lavender (for whom the building is named) for donating his time and expertise in construction. Special thanks must also go to Greg Flanagan who fitted the roof and Jim Henderson for his commitment to the project, as well as to the many helpers including Con Russell, Glen Johnstone, Ron Blount, John Cairns, John Sendall and Kevin Tonkin for all of their hard work. Ritek’s national sales manager, Ross Norman, said the company fully supports local community and business, and

was delighted to be able to make this contribution to the Cooroy Golf Club. After Ritek’s generous donation the club only had to raise around $1500 to complete the building which will house the golf buggies. Wayne Patson said the club is continuing to grow and is pleased that a lot more local business are taking up the sponsorship packages available at the club. Sponsorship packages include great membership deals and signage. If your business is interested in getting on board, please phone Wayne at the Cooroy Golf Club on 5447 6258.

U14 Matt Carson just coming out on top against Noosa in round 5 THE Pomona Cooroy Demons U14s are currently sitting on the top of the ladder after a fantastic start to the season. After serving a crushing defeat to Noosa in round 5 the team had to fight hard to come out on top against Coolum in round 6. Round 7 sees them play at home against Maroochydore to see if they keep their top of the ladder position. The U12s started out the season with massive wins in round 1 and 2 which saw the boys promoted to division one. They’re unfortuantely yet to see a win since moving up although it’s great to see the kids getting out there every week giving it 110%. The U8s and U10s are having alot of fun and improving their skills every week, there’s certainly some future AFL stars in the making. U8s had a successful day against Coolum Beach everyone played a hard game and they seem to come together as a team (goal kickers were Shane, Taj, Troy, Ashton, Mietta and Louis, while Ethan and John Jack kicked some great points). After playing a full game a

number of them stepped up and filled in for the U10s as they just can’t get enough. It’s great to see the Auskick numbers growing week by week - don’t forget to bring your little ones down to the Pomona Football oval at 8.30 on Sunday morning to give it a try. The seniors are currently sitting at 4th on the ladder with 2 wins and 2 losses. Gustsy loss in the rain to Noosa a couple of weeks back and then a convincing win against the new kids on the coast, the Northshore Jets. Plenty of young legs out there along with some older somewhat slower heads! Even have a father son combo playing with dad Andrew Hennings playing each week in the same team as his son Liam (Andy was Liam’s coach back in the U12’s). The old boys (Masters over 38) are still managing to drag their boots every second Sunday and look to be enjoying themselves, though there does seem to be a lot of interest in the after games refreshments! Go Demons!
