Sergeant Scott awarded Police Officer of the Year
Superintendent - District Officer Darryl Johnson, Sergeant Mal Scott, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson
POPULAR Police Sergeant Mal Scott was announced the winner of the inaugural Sunshine Coast Police Officer of the Year Awards at a gala ceremony at the Maroochy River Golf Club last Week. Sergeant Scott, who has served as a police officer for 35 years (20 years in Cooroy) said that winning this award is the highlight of his career. “To be honest I would have to say that this award is the highlight of my career. To be nominated by the Cooroy Community firstly and then selected as the winning officer by my peers is an amazing honour given the fact that there are so many other dedicated officers on the Sunshine Coast who deserve this award as much as I do,” said Sergeant Scott. “I have a new spring in my step when out and about in the community since then, so many locals have stopped to congratulate me, it’s quite humbling. Even the kids at the Cooroy Blue Light Disco on Friday night were high fiving me. “This is a wonderful community to work in, and despite the stressful moments that policing brings, the positivity and rewards of the job and the support of my colleagues, really makes it all worthwhile.” Hosted by The Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central the event held on May 9, was at-
tended by Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, along with many other dignitaries, and 33 members of the Queensland Police Force. Inspired by a project initially launched in Darwin to acknowledge the ongoing valuable contribution made by police officers to community safety, this is a first for the Sunshine Coast, and The Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central will be running this as an annual program, with the aim being to recognise outstanding acts of courage, compassion, understanding and devotion to duty provided by police officers at the local level. The award was presented to Sergeant Scott by Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, who congratulated all the finalists for their continued efforts in serving the community. The nominations were submitted by the general public as well as serving police officers; all nominations were vetted by the Queensland Police Service before they were presented to the selection panel, which consisted of members of The Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast, plus two representatives from QPS Sunshine Coast. A perpetual trophy was awarded which will be displayed at the QPS Sunshine Coast headquarters.

THE Australian Body Art Festival Photo Exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre offered up a hugely impressive body of work from 14 photographers that took photos during the festival in April. The exhibition runs until 23 May and Noosa Council Mayor Tony Wellington judged the photographs which was a very difficult task as the standard was so exceptional. The winners received their prizes at Cooroy Fusion Festival. Rosemary Beard won the Print Category which was presented by Barrie Adams for sponsor, Arts & Culture Eumundi. Owen Lyell won the Digital Art Category sponsored by Cooroy RSL. Heather Knowles received a Highly Commended award sponsored by Cooroy Fusion Festival. One final photo is yet to be announced with the public voting on their favourite photo in the exhibition which will be announced at the end of the exhibition.

Community group to drive Cooroy RV Stopover
NEW RV Stopover management arrangements will put the Cooroy community in the driver’s seat. The changes will provide a business opportunity for the successful community group and spare ratepayers the cost of running the facility. Council has called for expressions of interest to find a Cooroy community group to run the site under a Freehold Permit. The operator will pay only a token lease. “Council originally intended for the facility to be community run when it was established in 2015. The previous management agreement has ended and Council is now pleased to provide the opportunity to a local group,” says Mayor Tony Wellington.
LONG Boots, CHUNKY Boots, SHORT Boots, FUNKY Boots
“The previous management model had seen a commercial operator manage the site, which proved that it could operate at a profit. Now we want any profits to flow back into the local community. The new community-led management model gives greater flexibility and opens new opportunities for the RV Stopover. “This is a real win-win solution.” The EOI opens to not-for-profit community groups based in the Cooroy area Go to www.noosa.qld.gov.au/tenders for full details. Interim management arrangements will continue in the meantime.

BRICKBATS to motorists who don’t stop properly at the pedestrian crossing in Maple Street until pedestrians have completely crossed the road. A little patience could save a life. BRICKBATS to drivers who reverse out of the carparks in front of IGA right across both lanes of traffic. Not only is it illegal it inhibits the flow of traffic which is already extremely congested. BRICKBAT to the person who stole my donkey garden ornament from my front door while I was away. It has great sentimental value. If you could please return it there will be no questions asked. WHETHER it’s sitting down with a calculator yourself or gathering paperwork for a visit to your accountant, it going to be that time of year again soon. The next financial year will be another big one in terms of the national and global financial position. So, perhaps it’s time to make your new financial year resolutions? The question is how can we best achieve those and what steps can we take? For a lot of Australians, the home mortgage is the major household expense and yet sometimes that is an area that is not reviewed on a regular basis or included in a plan for the year. Why not take this time to do a health check on your mortgage? Why not contact your bank and ask for some time to sit down and review your options? It’s also a great time for small businesses. The write-off threshold of $20,000 has been extended to 30 June, 2018. If you buy an asset and it costs less than $20,000, you can immediately deduct the business portion in your tax return. The threshold applied from 12 May, 2015 and will reduce to $1,000 from 1 July, 2018. You are eligible to use simplified depreciation rules and claim the immediate deduction for the business portion of each asset (new or second hand) costing less than $20,000 if: • you have a turnover less than $10 million (increased from $2 million on 1 July, 2016), and • the asset was first used or installed ready for use in the income year you are claiming it in.
Assets that cost $20,000 or more can’t be immediately deducted. They will continue to be deducted over time using the general small business pool. You write-off the balance of this pool if the balance (before applying any other depreciation deduction) is less than $20,000 at the end of an income year. This incentive can be coupled with great rates on Equipment Finance packages, so put that new financial year resolution together and ring your local bank manager. Even better, ring me! That advice and input could make your new financial year a happy one. If you would like to know more about any of these services at our Cooroy or Pomona Community Bank branches, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au. Cooroora Campground to close CAMP Cooroora, the camp ground at Lake Macdonald operated by Scouts Australia, Queensland Branch, is being forced to close. Brian Lund (Camp Cooroora Scout Fellowship) said that the land owners, SEQ Water, has advised they will be taking possession of the site as they will be using it as a Base Camp for work on the dam spillway which is expected to take at least four years. “We have spent many thousands of dollars over the years improving the dam site,” said Mr Lund. “And now I have been told ‘That’s Life’. The land was a 99 year lease from Noosa Council. Brett Green (Chairman of the Gympie Scouting Hall of Memories Museum and President of the Gympie Scout and Guide Baden Powell Guild) says the closure of the camp ground is a local disaster. “After nearly 40 years of voluntary donations and workforces and fundraising to build facilities for the training of local youth from Scouting and schools in the Gympie, Cooloola and Sunshine Coast Region, it’s now been taken over by a government department with no public consultation that I’m aware of,” said Mr Green. The original forested site was developed as a teaching nature reserve by the Scouting fraternity where hundreds of native trees were planted to attract native wildlife. “There is also a revered ordained/consecrated church chapel where scouting burials, weddings and other religious events have taken place over the decades,” said Mr Green. “A huge two-storey accommodation building was built by parents, leaders and community organisations over the decades. Kitchen mess areas and other buildings were also built as memorials to recognise the work of Scout supporters. And the shock of it all is that there appears no compensation will come from the take-over – an amenity that cannot ever be replaced but now will be destroyed for a workplace and equipment storage,” said Mr Green. Past and retired scouting people who are shocked at the sudden takeover are looking into the possibility of a Statewide petition to save the site from the takeover to get the location for the campsite for dam workers changed to be closer to the dam site.
Lawrence Frederick Ramm (Lawrie) 22.5.20 – 18.3.18 LAWRIE was a true gentleman, loved and admired for his steadfast love of family, his community-minded spirit and his endearing sense of humour. He was born in Brisbane, the only child of Lawson and Mary and grew up in Albion, Brisbane. Lawrie studied at Windsor State School and Brisbane Grammar and after he finished teacher training college in 1937, Lawrie took up his first teaching appointment at Cooroy State School in 1938. He boarded at the Victory Hotel and enjoyed spending his time playing tennis and hockey and volunteering at the Noosa Surf Life Saving Association. Lawrie told stories of pushing the life saver’s truck over Noosa Hill, as it invariably could not negotiate the sand track. Lawrie was transferred to a one-teacher school near Monto in 1939 and stayed 2 ½ years before joining the Army. He served for 5 years as a signaller with the 47th Battalion and various cipher sections at Goodenough Island, Salamaua and Bouganville, earning a ‘Mentioned in Dispatches’ medal. After leaving the Army, he was posted to Green Swamp in March 1947 and it was here that Lawrie first met Joy. In 1964 Lawrie accepted a position at Cooroy State School and moved back to Cooroy with his family where he enjoyed bowls, fishing and an occasional punt on the horses. In June 1980, after 15 years at Cooroy State School, Lawrie retired from teaching and made the most of the opportunities to relax at home and visit his children in various parts of Australia and the world. Lawrie was the patriarch of a large family with his five children, Jenny, Ken, Peter, Lynn and Sheryl, their spouses; Son, Sally, Dominique, Veronique, Tony and Brett and eleven grandchildren; Jeremy, Tia, Oceane, Jeanne and Antoine, Kristie and Lisa, Ashlee and Sam and Lana and Liam. Lawrie was a devoted family man, always making time to read to his children and grandchildren and was an endless supply of valuable life advice, humour and encouragement. Spending roughly 55 of his 97 years in Cooroy, Lawrie was considered a true local and played a memorable role in the education of many Cooroy students. Lawrie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife Joy and other family members on the 18th March 2018. He will be missed for his quick wit, contagious laugh and his insatiable thirst to learn and to teach.
Don Blaik 22.3.37 – 2.5.18 DON Blaick was born and raised in Gympie before moving to Cooroy in 1992. Don did his National Service in 1956 before becoming a member of the CMF and then the Reserve Army where he was a member until 1985. He served overseas with the UN in 1973 in Israel and Syria. Don’s career was with the Customs Department in various locales in Queensland and in Darwin and wherever he was working he remained a member of the Reserve Army. He left the army as a Lieutenant Colonel. He married wife Pat in 1996 and lived on a property on Black Mountain Road before they decided to move into town in 2013, a move they both loved. Don was a member of the Cooroy Tennis Club and Life Member of the RSL Sub-branch. Don and Pat enjoyed their retirement years camping, caravanning and fishing, spending winters in Darwin and Broome. He has two daughters, Kerri and Jenice. Don will be sadly missed.

COOROY RAG I asked Jim once to write down some of the stories he’d told us over the years about his life. I didn’t know he’d done anything about it until this, his final editorial, was read at his Memorial Service last week. I thought I’d share it with you. I think he would have liked that. This is a story of a povertystricken lad, who came into the world with nothing and now owns thousands. It is a tale of courage, of tears, of laughter, of the triumph of stupidity over opportunity. My life story began in Brisbane, where in 1918, I came into the world. I was born very young – in fact, I was only in my infancy, and even then was anxious to get out of infancy into adultery. I weighed 6 pounds at birth, and was so small the Doctor wanted to throw me back, as he considered I was undersize. I was in the hospital at the time, and thought I was unwell, but a kindly nurse explained that I had to be near my mother. When my father asked my mother what she thought I should be called, she replied “Let’s call it quits”. I protested strongly at this, and they settled on James. I had a singularly deprived childhood – we had no TV set, no four-wheel drive, no dishwasher or washing machine (except Mother). None of the children had a transistor, or a mobile phone, and as Dad was too mean to put in a swimming pool, we had to put up with swimming in salt water at the Coast, or in the fresh water of the Brisbane River. Because Cheezepops or
www.cooroyrag.com.au
muesli hadn’t been invented, and McDonalds didn’t have a place in the area, we had to exist on fresh meat, fresh milk, butter, fresh vegetables and fruit, and other rubbish. The house was air-conditioned by opening all the doors and windows. I was dragged somewhat apprehensively, to school at Taringa, and later, under pressure from Taringa School, transferred to Sherwood school. My scholastic career was marked by such highlights as a desperate attempted suicide by a Maths teacher, the collapse into mumbling permanent insanity by an English teacher, the transfer at their own request by seven other teachers, and the transfer to atheism of the religious instruction teacher. On each occasion, the finger was pointed at me, for some reason, and I received counselling from the headmaster, who was also a leading amateur boxing champion. By the age of 12, I had been dropped on my head down a flight of steps by my big brother, electrocuted once, nearly drowned by a second party who I was rescuing from a lake at a Scout Camp, severely burned once, and narrowly avoided a snake bite. Although I had a feeling someone didn’t like me, I managed to survive. While in Scholarship year at Sherwood, I won a State-wide Essay Competition conducted by the Shell Company – the prize being ten pounds, equal in present day money to about $1200. I was previously runner-up in a Temperance Society Essay Competition, but I think I missed out because I included in the essay the informa-
My Life - by Jim Dunstan tion that my old man was very partial to the amber fluid. At the age of 14, I took up gliding, or rather gliding took me up, and after only 1 year, I was the holder of several records – 1. Australian record for the first person to fly as a passenger in a single seat glider, with only one seatbelt, which the glider selfishly claimed as his. He told me if I leaned forward and hung on to the king post the wind would keep me on, not in, the aircraft. 2. The first pilot to run over his own foot on landing – this record has never been broken. 3. Australian, and World record for the fastest descent from 1000 feet, with 999 feet 11 inches of steel towing cable attached to the nose. 4. World record for the fastest conversion of a perfectly good flying machine into matchwood, with no mechanical assistance, such as axes. This record was broken by a pilot of the Empire Training Scheme during World War 2. I should mention here that I was not killed fatally in any of these record-breaking achievements. At the age of 14 I joined the Brisbane Telegraph Newspaper as a very low form of Newspaper life, a copy boy. This was a reasonably good job in the middle of the Depression, because I was only required to work 6 days a week for 10 hours a day, at a salary of 12 Shillings a week, less tow pence tax. Later I was promoted to office boy, on 15 shil-
lings a week, and, later still moved into the Advertising Department, where I was lucky enough to be able to work on Saturday nights as well as working until 7pm on week nights. We received 2 Shillings tea money, but no time off to eat tea. Sundays were my own, to do what I wanted. My Mother was a fairly typical housewife of the day, overworked, caring, and in her case, unappreciated by my Father. She had a wonderful, gentle, nature, and I always thnk that she made Mother Teresa look like a bikie. She died in her mid-fifties, when I was at Milne Bay. In 1940, following a personal request from the then Queen’s Husband, George, I joined the Army. It was a toss-up between the Army and the Air Force, and the Amy lost. Assisted by a few other chaps I had won the War by 1945 (well I didn’t exactly win it, but I didn’t exactly lose it either). During those years, the Americans fought tenaciously to establish beach heads, PX canteens, and close relations with the Aussie sheilas, and most importantly, to ensure the supply of comic books, and candy bars to their troops in the field. Our own unit was a devil-may-care band of swashbucklers (I think that’s what the colonel called us when someone drove a jeep through his tent) and we gaily fought our way through a specially conducted, all-inclusive, all expenses paid 2 year tour of New Guinea, which
included such scenic delights as Milne Bay, Port Moresby, Finschhafen, Sialum, Wasu, Madang, and the health resort of Alexishafen. To me, the most moving part of this saga was the evening meal of stewed prunes. We returned to Australia to rest, re-fit, re-train, with our Digger spirit unquenched, as was our enormous 2 year old thirst. At this stage, while I was obviously weakened through wartime shortages of food, smokes, drinks, etc (especially etc) Maidie had agreed to marry me. She always claimed either she didn’t hear what I said, or that I was asking for something else. She must have fallen for my baggykneed jungle green uniform, the brown slouch hat, and my glowing Atebrin-yellow face. I must have looked like an over-ripe banana with boots on. I received two wounds during the War – a deep flesh wound when a tin of over-ripe bully beef exploded at Milne Bay, and a deep scratch wound on the cheek when I was Regimental Sergeant Major at the Women’s Army Training Battalion at Bonegilla in 1945. The War finished, so we didn’t have to do the return bit, and I was discharged, returning to the Telegraph. Our two children were born, much to their continuing consternation, and in 1948, I joined Ansett, as Sales Manager Qld and Northern NSW. I started with Ansett on April 1st, and Mr Ansett always claimed it was an April Fool’s joke someone had played on him. But it was a good job, never dull, and we all worked hard.
After about 15 years of suspected but undetected incompetence, I was transferred to Head Office in Melbourne as Marketing Services Manager. I still haven’t worked out what I did wrong to be sent to Head Office, but it must have been something serious. After about 8 years there, I was released, and gratefully transferred to New Guinea, as Regional Manager, Ansett Airlines of Papua New Guinea, based in Madang. With PNG Independence, I was seconded to the National Airline, AIR NIUGINI, as Regional Manager in charge of all domestic ports, plus Irianjaya and Honiara. My time with the airlines in new Guinea is a separate story of courage, laughs, tears and the triumph of something over something. I retired in 1982, after nearly 35 years with Ansett, and we moved to Cooroy. I became a founding member of Probus and served for several years on the Board of the Cooroy Hospital, resigning from the Board when I turned 80. I did this because I felt that they should have younger people on the Board. Shortly after, I was invited to join the Board of Kabara Hostel, and when I explained I’d resigned rom the Hospital because of my age, the President said he wouldn’t tell anyone how old I was, even when I pointed out I’d be older than a lot of the Kabara residents. I was also a founding member of the Cooroy Veterans golf club, and was patron of the Cooroy golf Club. My interests are aviation history, gliding, golf, lawn mowing (Jim’s mowing) and my family.

news Popular park in Eumundi gets playground expansion A Eumundi playground and picnic spot loved by families from all over the Sunshine Coast has been expanded to include an impressive new climbing structure and slide sure to catch the eye of children visiting the town’s main street or the Eumundi Markets. The upgrade to Dick Caplick Park also includes a new custom barbecue shelter, seating, pathways, and landscaping. Mayor Mark Jamieson inspected the new playground with Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson and students from the local primary school today. “The previous stage of upgrades at Dick Caplick Park saw the old equipment replaced and that was very well received by local children, so I’m pleased to see even more play elements added for them to enjoy,” Mayor Jamieson said. “It’s a great spot to visit for a family picnic and just another reason for people from across our region to enjoy a day in Eumundi.” Cr Rogerson said the park was a favourite spot for locals and visitors. “Eumundi is one of the Sunshine Coast’s unique gems, a town with a spe-
cial hinterland vibe, and this playground has been designed to suit that,” Cr Rogerson said. “The greens and browns, with timber elements and rope features, fit the surrounding area nicely. “Whether you’re stopping in with the kids after the markets or enjoying a lunch time barbecue under the shade of the fig trees, this park is definitely worth a visit.” This is one of many playground upgrades funded through Sunshine Coast Council’s $237 million Capital Works Program. Features of the Dick Caplick Park playground (Stage 1 and Stage 2) • The new tall climbing structure with rope nets, timber ladder and a slide. • Roplay climbing ball and additional smaller play equipment • Giant spinning wheel, the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast • A unique “rickety” play bridge suspended between the fig trees • Improved pathway network • Shaded by Eumundi’s historic fig trees and located next to barbecue shelters, an amenities building and plenty of seating for parents.

Mary Valley Art Festival kicks off with gala event
WINNERS of the 2018 Mary Valley Art Festival will be announced at a gala presentation on Friday July 6 as organisers target weekend tourists for the annual event. The program change from a Thursday presentation comes with the announcement of a three-day pass to give visitors entry to the exhibition and weekend program. Organising body Mary Valley Artslink has shaken up the art festival program this year to encourage peo-
ple to come and make a weekend of the outing in Mary Valley Country from July 6-8. The festival boasts a new category, with the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsoring a $1000 prize for artworks fitting the special theme Mary Valley, Naturally. That makes the total prize pool of $7850, across categories including the Bendigo Bank $2500 Open Award, landscape, animalia, 3D, novice, human form/por-
traiture, drawing, abstract and still life. Viewing opens at 10am on Friday July 6, with the awards that night from 6pm, where artists and art lovers can celebrate with live music, licensed bar and finger food. A curator’s talk by wellknown arts identity John Waldren, and a short film by established artist Pat Cale, are included in the Saturday program. John Waldren has more than 30 years’ experience in the arts sector as an art-
ist, art educator, curator, and manager. He has worked as an education officer and gallery director for government and corporation for 20 years. Several art studios will be open to the public over the weekend as part of the Gympie Gallery Studio Trails. The closing celebrations on Sunday July 8 are bigger than ever, showcasing the Thunderbird Demolition People’s Choice Award and Youth Award presentations, with food vans and markets, live music, art demonstrations, kids’ art and a licensed bar. Chainsaw artist and entertainer Keith Gall will create a bucking bronco wood sculpture from a camphor laurel tree stump at the southern end of the showgrounds where the festival is hosted. To capitalize on the threeday event, you can purchase a weekend pass which gives you unlimited entry to the Imbil Public Hall and surrounds. Visit www.mary valleyartfestival.com.au or phone 0407 375267 for further information.

Emma Tomlinson from Noosa District SHS took out third place in the secondary music category last year. Aspiring musicians, singers and dancers from Cooroy and Eumundi are warming up the vocal chords and honing their routines as they vie for a share in $30,000 in cash and prizes as part of the 2018 Breakthru School Music and Dance Competition being held at Sunshine Plaza. Twenty-five local primary and secondary schools from across the Sunshine Coast including Noosa District State High School and Eumundi State School will put their performance skills to the test over two Saturdays in May. The annual competition – now in its fifth year – will see a record 570-plus students take to the stage. The top three acts from each heat, as determined by the competition judges and public vote, will go on to compete in the grand final on Saturday, 9 June. In addition to showcasing the talents of local students, the competition aims to raise awareness of the importance of youth mental health and wellbeing. The 2018 Breakthru School Music and Dance Competition will be held at The Riverwalk Stage at Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore on Saturday, 19 and 26 May and 9 June.
THE 2018 charity concert fundraiser for Pomona Family Support will feature ‘Waters of Joshua’. This excellent vocal group, comprised of musicians from the Sunshine Coast, has kindly agreed to come to Pomona to support our charity. If you like American Soul & Gospel style singing, you are in for real treat. Lead singer Kat Van Hoesel hails from Brooklyn, New York and has inspired other singers and musicians to explore the music of her culture and tradition. The results have been outstanding to date with the group putting on some very special performances on the Coast in the last few years. The all-female vocal line up has a very high standard of singing, whether it

Busby Marou FRIDAY 1 June sees the incredible BUSBY MAROU playing a gig in The Brewery as part of their ‘Got Your Back’ Tour. The boys will be supported by much loved New Zealand songwriter JAMIE McDELL on the night. Busby Marou are flying high after an amazing 2017. Their latest album ‘Postcards From The Shellhouse’ debuted at #1 on the national ARIA charts and they sold 3,000 tickets to the first annual One Hot Night festival in Rockhampton. The latest single Got Your Back is proving to be one of their most loved to date and is reason enough to take their sounds of celebration on one last headline tour of Australia’s east coast for 2018. The rest of this year will be dedicated to writing and recording their fourth studio album, due for release in 2019. There’s a potent chemistry that drives Busby Marou, a bond struck between two mates (Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou) years ago in the corner of Rockhampton’s Oxford Hotel, when they happily knocked out tunes for hours on end to anyone who would listen. And it’s that unwritten
agenda, a simple intangible understanding between them, that they have come back to in order to shape an exciting new chapter in their remarkable career. “There’s something special about Busby Marou,” says Tom, the songwriting hub and lead vocal of the duo. “At the bottom of it all it’s two blokes singing with harmonies and a bit of storytelling.” That’s how it was at the start of Busby Marou’s recording career, those delightful harmonies blending with understated guitars on their debut EP The Blue Road. Their third album Postcards From the Shell House was recorded with Jon Hume (Evermore) at The Stables studios in Gisbourne, VIC as well as during sessions on Great Keppel Island and on a boat. Postcards From The Shell House returns the pair to their roots in a number of ways. The shell house in question, an old heritage-listed building on Great Keppel Island off the coast of their native Rockhampton, has great significance. Early in their career Tom and Jeremy would sit around a campfire there

and sing songs, one or two of which ended up on record. Last year, with producer Jon Hume in tow, that same method in the same location produced a few songs for the new album. “This last year has been huge and watching the crowds sing along to these latest bunch of songs has definitely been our highlight”, says Tom. “We’re stoked that this song is getting a lot of love. Can’t wait for this lap!” TICKETS: Pre-sale $30 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $35 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm Indie rock supremos Augie March will be performing in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Thursday 24 May as part of the launch tour for the long-awaited new album ‘Bootikins’. They will be supported by Rowena Wise. The band’s sixth studio album, ‘Bootikins’ was recorded in Melbourne and Hobart and produced by their dear friend, the legendary Tony Cohen, before his passing. Augie March songwriter and vocalist Glenn Richards says: “Tony Cohen wanted to make good on a promise to himself that he’d one day do something with our band. This was news, amazing news, to us, and it still amazes me that we got a chance to work with the man. The moments are ours and we will cherish them, it only suffices to say he got us feeling like; and playing like a real band again after a long interim, and we made some very good music together. The ‘Tickle Me Fancy’ ladies lunch stepped back in time to the 1920’s and enjoyed a funny silent movie, a delicious BBQ lunch, extra bubbly bubbles and a wonderful sing-a-long around the piano at the wonderful old Majestic Theatre Pomona. Forty ladies dressed in colourful flapper dresses, pearls, feathers and sequins made for a funtastic day out. One lady commented it was the best lunch fun she’d ever had as it had a different and exciting dimension compared to a normal lunch. S he loved the two volunteers at the Majestic playing a duet on the pianola and singing the good old songs from yesteryear. Lyn Cooper the organiser thought it was a terrific venue for a large ladies group to have fun and a giggle and step back in time to the 20’s. All the ladies had a ball. www.cooroyrag.com.au

Volunteers needed for Katie Rose KATIE Rose Cottage is a hospice for the terminally ill - where people will be given professional nursing care by our RN team, lovingly supported by our volunteer personal care and hospice support staff. The cottage hospice is based on a ‘one step from home’ model. It is intimate, comfortable and welcoming, not only for our guests but also for their families and friends. Since October last year, we have been providing day respite care in our Doonan home but we are planning to open for twenty-four hour care in the near future. With this goal in mind, we are conducting training courses for our volunteer carers and hospice support staff. The courses are held over four days and will ensure that the participants are equipped to begin their service at the hospice. Ongoing training and support will also be provided
regularly and the volunteers will be supervised and supported at all times by a registered palliative care nurse. There are two roles for our volunteers – personal carers (usually with a nursing background) and hospice support staff whose role covers a wide range of duties - from interacting with our guests and their families to cooking meals and keeping the house clean and tidy. Both roles are vital for the smooth and successful operation of Katie Rose Cottage so we value and respect our volunteers and the contribution they make. The next training will be held over the first four Mondays in July (2nd., 9th., 16th. and 23rd) and we are inviting expressions of interest from anyone who feels that they would be interested in learning more about either role at the hospice. Contact the hospice on 5471 1468 or Jane Woodrow on 0422 952 835 or by email at janew@katierosecottage.org.au.

health Chiro Can Help: Discover how chiropractors can help improve your quality of life
COOROY RAG
As part of Spinal Health Week 2018 (21-27 May), Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor) from Life Enhancing Chiropractic is encouraging Australians to make small lifestyle changes to improve their spinal health and wellbeing. Musculoskeletal conditions are very common, affecting 30% (6.9 million) of all Australians including 3.7 million people with back problems. In some cases, these are difficult to avoid (such as an accident or injury) however, everyday habits can be a big determining factor in how
well our spines handle stress. During Spinal Health Week 2018, Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor) is asking all Australians to focus on everyday habits which can be harmful to the health of our spines and encourage small, practical steps for the better. “Because musculoskeletal conditions are so common, there is a strong case for being proactive and making the necessary changes to improve your quality of life now and in the future” said Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor) from Life Enhancing Chi-
ropractic. Simple lifestyle adjustments such as being mindful of your posture, being more active, taking breaks from mobile devices and incorporating stretching into your daily routine can make a noticeable difference. “It is important to take preventative measures when it comes to spinal health and if you are experiencing pain, it is not advisable to ignore this. Seek advice from your local CAA chiropractor or other healthcare professional as early as possible”, explained Dr Adam Roache (Chiropractor).

Pomona Railway Station Gallery Becoming is a solo exhibition of recently completed paintings by local Pomona artist and art teacher, Fiona McComb. Many of the works are still life pieces, ranging in size and media. A recently completed Cubic Street Art piece on loan from the Noosa Regional Gallery prior to being placed in the community, is one of the largest pieces in the show. The media used in the show range from traditional oils on linen, to acrylic on canvas with some works incorporating more contemporary media of spray paint and airbrushing. They are all pieces in which the artist is exploring mark making and ways of depicting the world around her, using familiar objects and local inspiration. Many of the works also intersect with the impact of digital technology on the practice of painting. Exhibition opens Saturday 26 May at 2pm and will run until 28 June.

LOCATED at 14 DIAMOND STREET, COOROY
LOCAL chef and former restaurateur, Martin Duncan aka Sunshine Coast Foodie is launching and hosting regular monthly Morning Teas for older folk. The inaugural Scone Time event will be held on Tuesday, June 12 in the recently refurbished Cooroy Memorial Hall and then roll out into other halls across the Sunshine Coast. Working with CWA ladies and local businesses, the event is set to not only reignite life into these wonderful old halls but also help older people feel connected to their community. Inspired by 96-year-old UK resident Georgina, who, with no family remaining decided to involve herself with a local charity that hosted tea parties for people over the age of 75. Martin saw an opportunity to not only connect with older people, but also utilize the beautiful old venues around the Sunshine Coast to do so. “I saw an interview with Georgina and thought that surely the isolation that older people
feel is a worldwide issue,” says Martin. “Our beautiful region has so many community halls, that, back in the day, would have come to life on Saturday nights for dances, special events and weddings,” explains Martin. “How exciting it will be to create social experiences for our senior folk in these unique special buildings,” he adds. Local businesses are invited to sponsor a monthly gathering, donate their time or simply pay it forward for a guest (and carer) to attend Scone Time as a one off attendance or more. By involving local businesses it is hoped that the event will generate a positive social outcome in the community and enough income to cover its running costs to ensure its ongoing success. The Cooroy Scone Time will commence at 10am on the second Tuesday of every month at a nominal charge. For bookings, or more information on becoming involved please phone 0473 902 261.

Boutique means BEST for property owners It may seem strange in an environment where real estate companies are always pushing to be bigger, that the Property Management section of Hargrave Real Estate aspire to remain small. The intention is for their rent roll to stay ‘boutique’. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Senior Property Manager, Wendy Cousins, is a highly trained specialist in property management. When explaining their difference she advised: “We hear all too many property owners expressing frustration and disappointment that their property is not being looked after to their expectations. The reason is, often Property Managers are over loaded and hence do not have the time to provide personalised service to their clients. It may be days before they receive a response to an email or phone call. We can assure you that this is not the case in our office. Managing a smaller boutique rent roll ensures our clients come first. Our valued clients are exactly that, not just another number in the system.” Explaining how Hargrave Real Estate does things differently. “Our philosophy is simple; to look after your property as if it were our own.

MOTOR TRADERS ASSN OF QLD
WITH kind permission from SEQ Water and Noosa Council, Cooroy Rotary and the Maroochy Sea Serpents (Dragon Boat Queensland) engaged with the community to give paddling experience for all ages. The art of Dragon Boat Racing is over 2,000 years old and now a new event in Cooroy. Hoola Hooligans - Cooroy Physio, Schoolies – Noosa District, Rogan – Rotarians, Raving – Rotaractors and Sea Serpenter’s / Dragons Abreast battled it out on the picturesque Lake Macdonald. The wonderful weather proved to be the perfect backdrop for a fantastic fun day. First timers even signed up on the day to
sit in a real dragon boat to experience the magic of paddling with a team. Maroochy Sea Serpents gave their expertise in how to paddle and how to paddle safely. The sweeps encouraged and trained newbies, turning them into great teams. Teams who could listen to the beat of a drum and paddle in unison. The races took place and what a battle. The Hoola Hooligans in their floral shirts and Hawaiian Leis paddled so strongly, winning with power. They even won the best dressed. The schoolie’s won hands down on vocal support, firing themselves up by chanting loudly, really getting into the rhythm of the racing.

AFTER a week off to recharge the batteries a home game against Beachmere with top spot on the ladder up for grabs awaited the Pomona-Cooran Cutters. With every team from the competition playing at Cooran combined with stunning weather made for a great afternoon of rugby league. After two very solid games to kick the afternoon off the large crowd were treated to a game of high quality. No inch was given by either team who wanted to show that they were the top dog. After a mountain of possession Beachmere scored 2 tries to take a 10 nil lead to the half time break. Injuries started to take their toll on the Cutters who started to gain confidence after continually repelling each Beachmere attacking raid. After a break by Dylan Crawford-Window from deep in the Cutters half a Beachmere player ended up in the sin bin & the tide started to turn. On the next set a backline
UPCOMING GAMES:
move saw the returning Pete “Alvin Purple” Sims score in the corner. With the conversion unsuccessful the bounce of the ball didn’t go the Cutters way & Beachmere scored just on fulltime to take the score to 16-4. It was a massive effort from the 19 guys who played with several players unavailable it was a different team to which was selected earlier in the week. Despite the score not going their way, there is a lot of confidence in the squad. The 3 points went to David Fray who took the game to the Beachmere forwards, 2 points went to Des McLeary & 1 to Dylan Crawford-Window. Don’t forget the Cutters Country kitchen is open every Friday night see the weekly specials at www.facebook.com/ cutterscountrykitchen There are raffles every Friday night as well as the members draw. Ask any of the volunteers if you wish to become a member.
