High five for ‘Master of the games’ COOROY’S Superfish, Clinton Stanley, competed in the pool at the World Masters Games in Auckland bringing home five gold medals. The swimming was held at AUT Millennium Pool based on Auckland’s North Shore with 1,500 participants. Clinton competed in five individual Para events 400m 200m 100m freestyle and 100m 50m Butterfly. He certainly hadn’t forgotten how to race winning a total of 5 Gold Medals with three personnel best times. Held every four years, the Inaugural World Masters Games took place in Toronto Canada in 1985 and few would have predicted then how the event would grow into the largest participating multisport event in the world. This year the event attracted almost 25,000 athletes aged between 25 and 101 years of age, from over 100 countries across 28 sports. Clinton has been a member of Noosa Masters for 14 years and trains at Noosa under the watchful eye of Coach Jan Croft, also a great competitor and National Record holder. This is not the first time Clinton has competed at World Masters Games he competed in 2009 at Sydney Olympic Park. Having the inclusion of Para events and sports at World Masters gives athletes with a disability an opportunity to compete within main stream. Clinton who is now a young 40 still loves to train and compete alongside his friends in Masters. He has a wonderful attitude towards life and given the opportunity always likes to have a go. Being the best he can be!

Sgt Mal Scott and Stan Ryan of the Cooroy Community, were awarded with a Nicklin Community Award from Peter Wellington MP, along with 20 other well deserving people of the Nicklin Electorate. The Awards Ceremony was at the Nambour CWA Hall. SERGEANT Mal Scott is a prime example of how to deliver community policing. He consistently takes a greater than occupational approach to the safety of Cooroy for the past 18 years. To aid and protect the business community, Mal introduced an alert system that resulted in businesses in town being made aware to potential problems in advance. He was also instrumental in assisting the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce developing the recently unveiled community CCTV project and establishing the Cooroy Branch of the Blue Light Association Inc. Mal recently responded to a robbery while off duty and was injured for his efforts. It is Mal’s sense of community and genuine desire to protect Cooroy, that makes his actions stand out. Mal, our community is a safer place thanks to you and we congratulate you on this well-deserved award.

STAN Ryan has dedicated much of the past 40 years, keeping people in our community safe. He has provided volunteer ambulance care, been an auxiliary fireman and thirty years ago he was recruited into the local 30-strong SES outfit at a time. Stan has educated the public about avoiding lifethreatening situations and has conducted workshops that encourage public awareness of storm surges and the need for a local street response – neighbours helping one another out. For much of this time, Stan has been Local Controller of the Sunshine Coast North SES Group, and was named the Queensland SES Member of the Year. Though Stan is stepping down as First Controller, he will still continue to help out and has already indicated that he will still be involved in chainsaw training. We think he will also continue to be a source of inspiration to Noosa SES members as they go for a fourth Chairman’s Cup. Stan your efforts throughout the years have saved many and on their behalf we congratulate you on this well-deserved award.

Yay for Section A! Another section of Cooroy to Curra upgrade now open THE $490 million Cooroy to Curra Section A upgrade is completed and already easing congestion for all motorists travelling that section of the Bruce Highway. Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the upgrade would pay dividends for up to 16,000 motorists who use this stretch of road every day. “Our $50 billion investment in infrastructure is improving roads right around Australia and this upgrade forms a big part of that commitment,” Mr Chester said. “The Bruce is the key arterial route in the region, connecting people to Brisbane and as far north as Cairns. This particular upgrade will reduce congestion for local motorists, en-

suring they can reach their destinations with a minimum of fuss, while reducing business costs for local freight operators. “Our investment in roads is changing lives and it is saving lives - but there’s always more we can do to improve our road network.” Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the upgrade was one of Queensland’s highest priority road projects. “The Bruce Highway is regarded as one of the most dangerous roads in Australia, and that is why the Queensland Government is partnering with the Australian Government to deliver the $8.5 billion tenyear Bruce Highway Upgrade Programme,” Mr Bailey said.

“The Cooroy to Curra Section A project supported more than 430 jobs during construction which was a great boost for the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions. “Queensland-based Bielby Holdings, which completed one of the contracts on this project, have now secured work on the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade from Rocklea to Darra Stage 1. This shows how important projects like these are for creating and maintaining jobs in Queensland. “Importantly, this project will enhance safety and efficiency for local motorists, travellers and heavy vehicles along this section of the Bruce Highway.” Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said he was pleased to see

the upgrade complete, and said the extensive upgrades currently underway on the local road network would improve driving conditions for motorists. “This project was the next priority section to be constructed for the Cooroy to Curra project, following completion of Section B in December 2012. By mid2018 this region will see the completion of the $384 million Section C upgrade,” Mr O’Brien said. “The completion of Section A means we are one step closer to a safer, more efficient and higher capacity road network that will allow this region to grow. Contract three was the final piece of the puzzle, involving construction of two new northbound lanes and reconstructing the southbound lanes between the

Cooroy southern interchange and Cudgerie Drive. “The project also included a new four-lane divided highway between Cooroy southern interchange and Sankeys Road at Federal with construction of new bridges over Six Mile Creek.” “This stretch of the Bruce Highway was once one of the most deadly sections of the national highway. These projects have made it much safer, but there is more work to be done to improve the Highway from Gympie north through Wide Bay.” There will be single lane closures on the Bruce Highway between the Cooroy southern interchange and Cudgerie Drive over the coming weeks to complete minor finishing works, weather permitting.

The reason it’s called Cooroy’s favourite family festival is due to the diverse variety of entertainment and activities for all ages to enjoy and all for FREE! From the jumping castle, animal farm and lego lounge to the human hamster balls, inflatable funky photobooth and all-day entertainment on the big stage, there was something for all ages to enjoy. None of this would be possible without a combined effort from sponsors and support from the local community, however it is worth knowing that the driving force behind Fusion is due to a dedicated volunteering team – “Cooroy Fusion Festival Committee’. Fantastic Fusion Festival! EVERYWHERE you turned last Saturday at Cooroy Fusion Festival there was fun to be had! They had it all – live music, street performers, fantastic food, kids activities, talented artists, literary events, market stalls, woodworking, animals, displays by community groups and businesses, orchids and plants, workshops, smiles everywhere and perfect sunny weather! The Festival celebrates the opening of the fabulous Cooroy Library and features the annual shows of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club and the Noosa Orchid Society. Combine this with all that is great about the Hinterland and you have the ingredients for a highly successful day. “It was a wonderful day with a record crowd. We lived up to our promise of once again being bigger and better than last year and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from everyone. “We couldn’t have done it without our amazing crew of volunteers and our generous partners and sponsors,” said Chris Bell, chairperson of the Cooroy Fusion Committee. Cooroy Fusion is one of those special events that just bubbles with community spirit. It showcases what a wonderful part of the world we live in. Spread right up Maple Street it included a huge range of activities at the Cooroy Mill Site, Cooroy Camphor Laurel Group, Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Library, Butter Factory Arts Centre and CWA Hall. The Bendigo Bank Entertainment Tent was packed full of top shelf entertainment and the Cooroy RSL Pickled Possum bar was a great spot to catch the likes of the Cherry Ripes, Ian Hawkins, Sambazzy, Claptomaniacs, Annie J & Fusion and the Greenwood Grove Geckoes Wildlife Experience! The Supa IGA Cooroy “Tastes of the Hinterland” was a big hit with attendees delighting in samples from local producers. Even the new attractions were above and beyond the norm with the Raine & Horne Dart Ball and inflatable human hamster balls proving to be big hits with kids and grown-ups alike. Other new additions included an inflatable photo booth with photos that could then be used to make a Mother’s Day Card, a pottery throw down and even a virtual reality experience! Cooroy Fusion Festival is run by the Cooroy Future Group Inc and funded by festival partners Noosa Council and Cooroy Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank and sponsors Greenwood Grove, Raine & Horne Noosa Hinterland, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Supa IGA, Club Cooroy RSL, Firefly Solutions, Noosa Today, Palm Lake Resort, Cooroy Camphor Laurel, Fiona Winter Realty, Cooroy Rag, Cooroy Hotel, Cartwrights Lawyers, Cooroy Service Centre RACQ, Gelignite Jacks, Suttons Cleaning Service, Noosa Beverages, Mower & ATV Solutions, John Madill Toyota, Wythes Real Estate, Officeworks, McDermott Aviation, QMP, Chapman’s Auto Repairs and Max Watterson & Associates. COOROY RAG Pomona Bowls Club juniors on a roll

Pomona Bowls' Judy Muir, Hannah Dennis and Geoff Edwards from Bendigo Bank are joined by Cassidy, Rylan, Molly, Keely, Cody and Brady DID you know there are currently in excess of 250,000 registered lawn bowls members in Australia? Another 500,000 play socially and it’s one of our nation’s fastest growing sports for all ages. So, when Pomona Bowls Club approached the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank to sponsor a bowls kit specifically designed for kids the answer was of course, yes. With the growing number of younger people getting interested in the sport Bowls Australia designed the Jr. Jack Attack kit, which can be used on a range of surfaces. Pomona Bowls Club treasurer, Judy Muir said that it was the Bowls Club’s relationship with their local bank that made it easy to ask for the help in purchasing the kit.

“We have had a lot to do with Geoff, Hannah and Pomona’s Bendigo Bank and applied for some sponsorship in the hope they’d help out. We were successful and they’re great to work with. Now we have this great kit for kids to have a go at the sport. Having identified the limitations of kids using a full-size bowls kit, the Jr. Jack kit includes 32 lightweight rubber bowls, eight jacks, 50 cones a target score mat, stepping mats and score cards. Judy said she hopes the new kit will also appeal to local school kids because of the inclusivity it leads to. “Bowls is great because there’s no advantage to being short or tall, male or female or your level of strength. It includes anyone who wants to give it a go and the friendships made from the sport are fantastic”, she shared. Manager of the Pomona agency of Bendigo Bank, Geoff Edwards said he looks forward to seeing more growth in one of the hinterland’s popular clubs. “Our relationship with Pomona Bowls Club means a lot to us. So many of our locals spend time on the greens, at the bar or in their fantastic restaurant and we’re here to support the hinterland community wherever we can. The more people support us, the more we can give back,” he said. “Application forms for sponsorship until June 30, 2018 are open until May 19 so we hope lots of locals apply for what’s close to their hearts in the weeks ahead. Like we always say, Bank with us and everyone benefits,” Geoff added. Pomona Bowls Club has more than 100 bowling members and 500 social members, and has been in operation since 1948. For more information about Pomona Bowls Club or the Jr. Jack Attack kit, call 5485 1202 or call in and ask more about Pomona Bowls Club at 4 School Street, Pomona. To access a Bendigo Bank sponsorship application form, call into the Cooroy, Pomona or Tewantin Community Bank branches or go to www.sccfsl.com.au/ sponsorships to find out more.

news Conserving your Business Capital – Equipment Loan Geoff Edwards, Cooroy & Pomona Community Bank Branches of Bendigo Bank AS your business grows, so do the number of decisions you have to make regarding the finance of your Motor Vehicles, Plant and Equipment etc. The simplest option is to purchase the equipment straight out. This may not be the best use of your working capital though, and may put undue pressure on your cash flow. While you will still be able to claim the depreciation as long as the equipment is used to generate assessable income, you will not be able to take advantage of any taxation benefits that may otherwise be available to your business. What sort of business equipment can be financed? • Cars, utilities and light commercial vehicles Trucks and buses • Forklifts, cranes and earthmoving equipment • Computing and office equipment • Printing, medical and manufacturing equipment • Industrial plant equipment Financing business equipment has changed over the years particularly with the introduction of GST which has changed the cost effectiveness of traditional equipment finance for many businesses. Businesses looking to finance equipment should also be aware that some finance products will have certain characteristics which prove more beneficial to them than others. Terms for finance normally range from two to five years and the equipment finance product range includes Finance Lease, Asset Purchase and Equipment Loan. Equipment Loan is the focus of this article and is currently the most popular type of

equipment finance. As the taxation and accounting treatments of various finance products may vary, it’s recommended you seek independent expert advice before choosing an option. Security is provided to the Bank over nominated goods (i.e. various plant, equipment and motor vehicle etc) by way of a Specific Security Deed. In simple terms, this type of finance is structured in the same manner as a property mortgage, with the equipment owned by the business, but allocated as security against the loan. The interest and depreciation components are usually tax deductible provided that the equipment to be financed is used to generate assessable income. If you would like to know more about financing your equipment purchases, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au

A realty check for accessing super early Chad Monroe Certified Financial Planner® of Provision Wealth Management*

IT is not surprising that when housing affordability is being discussed alternative funding solutions are often raised. Recently the idea of allowing access to superannuation accounts to help finance house purchase has again surfaced. When it comes to the basics of life the issue of finding shelter putting a roof over one’s head – ranks high on most people’s list. So as the dream of home ownership continues to recede further into the financial distance for younger Australians in our major cities it is not surprising that the public debate about levels of housing affordability is increasing in volume. Australians have an ingrained faith in property – both on the shelter front and as an investment. Residential property is like other investment markets and it moves in cycles and it is strongly influenced by things like interest rate rises or

jumps in unemployment but convincing younger Australians that property prices may fall in the future is one of the great communication challenges of our time. Today we are living in a record low interest rate environment. That – as someone who had their first mortgage application rejected at a time of 16% variable rates – has not always been the case nor can it be relied on to stay that way forever. The economics of supply and demand will play out over time particularly as house price growth outpaces household income levels and we are already hearing warnings about oversupply particularly in apartment markets in Melbourne and Sydney. This is not to dismiss the need for a public debate on the issue of housing affordability. Clearly that is a significant social issue and a key challenge facing our state and federal political leaders. It also impacts differ-

ent parts of our community in different ways – there is the obvious challenge to the aspiring new home buyer but increasingly it can also involve parents providing loans or guarantees to enable children to enter the property market. It is also not surprising that when housing affordability is being discussed alternative funding solutions are often raised. Recently the idea of allowing access to superannuation accounts to help finance house purchases has again surfaced. In investing, as in life, it is all about trade-offs. The appeal of allowing part of your super balance to be used to buy a home is understandable. For a start as a younger person your super is locked away for what seems a long, long time. So being able to access it to do something useful and personally beneficial right now is instantly appealing. The immediate risk is that markets will adjust accordingly and all you

will achieve is artificially inflating house prices to allow for the additional loan from the super account. Beneficiaries are more likely to be the sales agents, courtesy of the commission structures in the industry rather than new home buyers. But the longer term risk is that by taking a lump sum out of the super account investors will lose the impact of compound earnings over several decades. You do not have to be much of a mathematician to work out that your retirement account balance will be significantly lower than it otherwise would be. Independent consulting firm Rice Warner modelled the impact on a fund member aged 35 who is earning average wages and takes $100,000 out of their super account to use as a housing deposit. The loss of compounding investment earnings over many years would dramatically affect the young member’s retirement balance. Rice

Now OPEN at NOOSA CIVIC

Warner calculates that allowing someone to withdraw $100,000 from their super account would mean the federal government would have to pay them an additional $92,000 in age pension. What is often not well understood is that the investment earnings usually represents a larger component of the retirement benefit than your contributions. So a short-term solution on housing could mean long term pain on retirement savings. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management 1 Pty Ltd | ABN 44 164 359 568 and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd | ABN: 52 149 014 004 are Authorised Representatives and Credit Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. Endurance riders crank up the horse power in Imbil LAST Sunday over 150 endurance riders from as far afield as Osaka in Japan and Mt Martha in Victoria saddled up in Imbil to take on the diverse forestry terrain around the Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex over 40km, 80km and 120km distances. The Australian Endurance Riders Association (AERA) event attracted around 400 visitors to the region thanks to families and support crew members joining the riders, adding over 40 per cent to Imbil’s population for the weekend. Event host and owner of Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex, Matthew Sample said he was delighted with how the event which was oversubscribed had gone and congratulated the winners on their exceptional results. “It was wonderful to have the current Queensland State Champion and Imbil local Kaylea Maher take the win in the lightweight category and Boreen Point resident and 2016 Pat Slater Cup winner Kelsey Irvine take home the middleweight title,” said Mr Sample. “Kenilworth was also well represented with Leigh Ann Sample taking second in the lightweight category as well as ‘best

conditioned’ while her son Matty came in third in the juniors after winner Emma Dimech and runner-up Maeve Paten.” ”It really was a fantastic weekend and the feedback we’ve had has been really positive from all who were involved. This is the second major event we’ve hosted at the complex and we’re really happy with how it all went.” “Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex is the only purpose-built endurance venue in Australia and we’ve worked hard to create an environment where the riders can really get the best results ¯ both for themselves and their horses. I am really proud of how everything came together and we are now looking forward to the next major event in early August when we host FEI 1, 2 and 3 rides including the Bullio Arabians 2 Trans Tasman Challenge.” “I’d like to thank the team at Stirling’s and the wonderful support we’ve had from the local community to date. It really helps when we welcome those who travel here from across Australia and overseas as we’d love them to keep coming back to Imbil. Events such as these bring great economic benefit to the region so it’s a winwin for everyone.”

Tall Trees Art Exhibition As in previous years, the 2017 Tall Trees Art Exhibition in Cooran aims to recognise, promote and bring together local artistic talent and this year’s exhibition featuring over 70 local artists will be no different. But for the first time, this year’s exhibition will take place at multiple venues in the main street of Cooran and be a real collaboration between local businesses and the community. The exhibition will stretch from one end of King Street to the other, inviting patrons to meander about as they view the work of local artisans in various mediums in a variety of settings. Venues vary from an eclectic coffee shop stocking vintage wares, to other businesses and social spaces such as the Cooran Rec Club, Artspace and the Pheonix room. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity for artists to share their work in a public space and offer them for sale over the festive weekend to patrons from near and afar. Other event inclusions designed to ignite creativity will feature interactive arts and music workshops utilising recycled materials and remedial massage by local Ayurveda therapist Danielle Gonsal. Event organiser Mia Hacker says the high quality of work produced by local artists is again expected to attract the attention of an artistically supportive community and visitors to the exhibition which has established itself as a must see event in the local Arts calendar. ‘It is a real pleasure for us to share in the enthusiasm for creative pursuits in this community and to offer local artists the opportunity to exhibit their work, and we are excited to be working with Cooran businesses and social clubs to share their talent and celebrate all that Cooran has to offer’, she said. The event’s opening night will occur on Friday night the 30th June at a ‘meet and greet’ with artists at The Verandah, at the site of the heritage listed timber mill and continue until 5pm on Sunday 2nd July. Exhibition venue opening times will vary from 7am to 5pm over the 1-2 July weekend and between them will cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information about this year’s exhibition and venues visit talltreesart.com or see Tall Trees Art Exhibition on Facebook for more details.

EUMUNDI

Get on the dance floor with Vaudeville Smash MELBOURNE’S disco/pop dynamos Vaudeville Smash are returning to the Coast on Saturday 3 June to play at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel, supported by Brains Trust. An explosion of funk, flute, sax, synth and groove, Vaudeville Smash pack the dance floor with their high energy good time sets. Made up of three brothers and two mates, they have a sound that’s all their own – a mind-blowingly refreshing sonic feast that fuses late 70s and early 80s quasi-disco dance grooves. Vaudeville Smash have certainly carved their own niche, building a formidable following in their hometown of Melbourne and around the world. Their international adventures have seen them sign with Japan’s

P-Vine records, after returning to Tokyo and the Sapporo City Jazz Festival in 2015 for the third consecutive year. Other notable mentions include playing South by South West in Austin Texas twice, shows in New York, Singapore, Toronto for Canadian Music Week, main stage at St Kilda Festival, the Australian Open Tennis, and six unforgettable shows at Woodford Folk Festival 2015/16. This is a gig not to miss. Bring your dancing shoes! Terraces upgrade for iconic Eumundi Markets A SECTION of the premises for the Sunshine Coast’s iconic Eumundi Markets is undergoing an upgrade to ensure the area remains safe and improve the market experience for visitors. The project is joint initiative by Eumundi community organisations and Sunshine Coast Council. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said the markets were a vibrant Sunshine Coast destination. “Eumundi is a jewel in the Sunshine Coast crown and this project will ensure one of our key attractions remains safe and welcoming for its many visitors,” Cr Rogerson said. “I thank everyone involved in this project for their diligence in ensuring this important upgrade is delivered for Eumundi. Supporting this platform for local artisans will help achieve our vision of Sunshine Coast being Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.” Experience Eumundi general manager Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher said the markets were a drawcard for residents and visitors. “The Eumundi Markets are an international destination and the Sunshine Coast’s biggest cultural tourist attraction with some 1.2 million visitors each year,” said Mr Wynne-Hoelscher. “And, with more than 600 local micro-businesses taking up stalls at each market day, the markets are one of the Coast’s largest private employers. “This much needed, high quality upgrade will help position Eumundi well into the future to remain Australia’s greatest artisan market.” Stalls usually located on this “terraces” section will be temporarily repositioned to the short term council carpark on Napier Road. Construction is expected to be completed in 14 weeks. The Eumundi Markets will continue to operate in full throughout construction, open on Wednesdays 7.30am-2pm, Fridays 8.30am-2pm and Saturdays 7.30am-2pm.

Another side of Mayor Wellington

LNP Candidate Marty Hunt with Alan Bell POLICE Sergeant Marty Hunt, will contest the seat of Nicklin, held by retiring independent Peter Wellington at the next State election. He was in Cooroy last week introducing himself to members of the community. Mr Hunt is married with two children and has been in the police force for 30 years and run the Burnside PCYC for 17 years. “Having been a police officer for almost 30 years I have seen first-hand the issues our community is facing, which is why my focus is on delivering better government and reducing youth unemployment,” Mr Hunt said.

‘SURPRISING’ is probably a good way to describe the upcoming exhibition at Pomona’s Railway Station Gallery. It features paintings by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, and his works are full of amusing surprises. “I guess my paintings reveal my mischievous side,” Tony explains. “Often they are based on puns and wordplay, and there’s a bit of trickery about them.” Viewers may find themselves doing the odd doubletake, because not everything is quite as it seems with these works. Wellington’s exacting style often employs what’s known as Trompe L’oeil technique - literally ‘deceiving-the-eye’. In this case, objects appear to be attached to the canvas but are actually painted on. “I work in a very detailed, exacting sort of way,” he explains. “It’s quite time consuming. When I was working full-time as an artist, I would pump out a painting every couple of weeks. “Now I’m only completing a handful of works each year. That’s why I’ve called this exhibition ‘Stolen Moments’. It’s the product of those rare occasions when I can escape from my day job and sit in my studio. “Stolen Moments” officially opens in the Carriage Exhibition Room of the Pomona Gallery on Saturday 27 May at 3pm. Juanita Bloomfield will be the guest speaker. The exhibition runs until 21 June.

news Putting the weight and the wallet behind education

Cooroy Rotary Club President, Andrew Aves THE Rotary Club of Cooroy was presented with a Bronze Award to recognise cumulative donations of more than $2,500 to the Rotary and Sunshine Coast University Community Fund at a dinner held on Wednesday 10 May 2017. The objective of the Community Fund is to advance tertiary education opportunities through a partnership between the combined Rotary Clubs of the Sunshine Coast and the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC). In total $155,000 has been distributed by Rotary to 51 PhD students “Cooroy Club members have supported this

great Rotary initiative for many years. It was established in 1996 at the same time as founding Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM was promoting his strong vision that the University should be an integral part of the community,” said Andrew Aves, President of the Rotary Club of Cooroy. “We are delighted to receive the Bronze Award to recognise our Club contributions that have only been made possible because of the generosity of Cooroy residents at our various fund raising events.” Three scholarships are awarded annually to post-graduate students,

one from each Faculty, and a third nominated by the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor. This year recipients are Luke Hawley from the Faculty of Arts, Business and Law for his research into closing the gap between the communication skills of students in different learning environments; Kye McDonald from the Faculty of Science, Health, Education and Engineering for his work on detrimental impacts on native wildlife and koalas in particular; and Ryan Lewis from Research and Innovation on how and why bees use resin. Professor Greg Hill, Vice-Chancellor explained how the USC has grown with student numbers now over 16,000 and forecast to increase to 20,000 by 2020 and successful research is critical to attract students from home and overseas. Already the success of research at USC has been reflected in higher ratings of the University in the Times Higher Education tables. The provision of Rotary Scholarships makes a significant contribution to their ongoing success.

Become a ‘Basket Buddy’ THE Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade is a Cooroy based charity and has been operating since November 2014. During this time there’s been a huge growth in the number of Christmas food and gift baskets/hampers they have delivered all over the Sunshine Coast. However, the highest number of basket recipients have been in Cooroy and Pomona. Following the success of Basket Buddies’ first year with over 180 families joining the program, this year they are ramping it up so even more families can benefit! ‘Basket Buddies’ was designed by Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade to gather food pantry items for the gift baskets they deliver to families in need just before Christmas. This year, their volunteers aim to pack and deliver 300 baskets – 100 more than last Christmas! So they really need some extra Basket Buddies to help out this year. Last year, the Basket Brigade were overwhelmed by the generosity of Sunshine Coast families, workplaces, schools and other groups who collected food items each week, for the baskets. Even sporting teams got into the spirit - the whole Cougars Ladies Netball team signed up as Basket Buddies and each shopped for a family! The Cougars are part of the Noosa District Netball competition and their team organiser,

Christine, advised the ladies what food item to buy when she sent through the game details each week. Wouldn’t it be great if other netball (or other sport) teams across the Sunshine Coast sign up this year. The target of 300 baskets would easily be reached! It’s easy to be a Basket Buddy and anyone can join. For just a few dollars a week, you can really make a difference this Christmas to a Sunshine Coast family in need. If you’re able to add one extra food item to your weekly shopping basket (June-November), sign up online as a Basket Buddy before 5 June - http:/ /eepurl.com/cL_fp1 You’ll then receive a food list by email - so you’ll know what to buy each week, starting from Week 1 – Monday 5 June. Then you just keep collecting your food items right up to the drop off/collection week in late November. The Basket Brigade team will then tally all the food collected by the Basket Buddies, and work out what they need to buy, if anything, to top up the 300 baskets. All the food donated will be packed into baskets for all nominated families/individuals, along with a gift for every family member. All baskets will be delivered by Basket Brigade volunteers right across the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, 9 December.

Depression Recovery Program MAJOR depression is the most common mood disorder worldwide. It knows no cultural, social or economic barriers and is largely misunderstood. Members of Cooroy Seventh-day Adventist Church have seen the effects of this debilitating illness and in response are coordinating Depression Recovery Programs to support those in our community who are experiencing depression. The 8-week Depression Recovery Program (beginning June 20), developed by Dr. Neil Nedley, has successfully helped thousands of sufferers worldwide not only identify and correct the cause of depression, but also improve overall mental performance. The first Depression Recovery Program held in

Cooroy last year transformed the lives of 10 locals. Depression knows no age barriers, the youngest participant last year; a 15 year old young man stated, “I liked the strategies for self-help such as eating healthy, getting fresh air and sunshine.” The program’s topics include lifestyle therapies for depression and anxiety, overcoming loss and nutrition for the brain, with the aim of the 8-week course to improve memory, concentration, sleep, relationships and overall mental, physical and spiritual health. The community is invited to attend a information evening is being held on Tuesday 13th June at Noosa Christian College library at 7pm to learn more about this year’s Depression Recovery Program.

Find your balance LISA Edwards considers herself a Cooroy local, having moved here with her family from Sydney fifteen years ago. Having lived in such contrasting places she believes she is well qualified to say that Cooroy and the Hinterland offer so much more to individuals and families. “The Hinterland really is a special and magical place, and we are blessed to be able to live here”. Lisa’s journey with what are now considered non-traditional healing methods began with her completing her Reiki studies fourteen years ago, though she is quick to point out that what are presently called ‘non-traditional’ healing methods were for centuries widely valued and sought after. She has proudly just completed two hard years of study to achieve her Diploma of Biodynamic-Cranial Sacral Therapy, and is hanging up her shingle here in town. “Biodynamic-Cranial Sacral Therapy is a

mouthful, I understand that” she laughs, but it is an enormously effective method of treating a whole range of ills which many people think they just have to live with or suffer through. Chronic pain, back issues, arthritis, migraines, frozen shoulders, and especially past traumas, BCST is well-documented to have made significantly positive changes to all these health issues and more. It is a fascinating hands-on yet non-manipulative approach, and it gently encourages the body’s own energy to return to a sense of balance and health. “If you are in pain, and that can be physical or emotional, as a matter of course your muscles tense up and just on its own that can have a detrimental impact on how your body functions. BCST can allow the body to realign itself, it can restore balance, and aside from a reduction in pain many of my clients also report better sleep since their treatments”. sport Gymnast to compete at Australian Championships

COOROY RAG

KYLE McCartney will be the first Cooroy Gymnast to represent Queensland at the Australian Gymnastics Championship next week. Kyle will compete as part of the Queensland level 10 team on all 6 apparatus. Qualification was at the recent Queensland Gymnastics Championship where he finished 2nd on Vault 3rd onRings, 3rd on Parallel Bars and 6th all around. Since the state titles, he has been working with his coach Rico Ramerez working at refining his skill and routines. Kyle is a year 12 student at Sunshine Coast Gram-

mar and manages fit in school with training 5 days a week at the Cooroy Gymnastics Club. Coach Rico said,”Kyle has been training hard and will do well. We may see Kyle and the Cooroy Club awarded it’s first Australian Championship Medal.” The Australian Gymnastics Championships will be held at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena from May 26th until June 4th. The event will be live streamed so you can view all of the action. For more info about Cooroy Gymnastics visit www.cooroygymnasticsclub.com.au

Rugby Union: Eumundi Dragons U7s: The Dragons came out strong against a well prepared Flinders and Maroochydore teams. Max and Ted led the offensive with numerous breaks through the oppositions defensive lines. Charlie showed that girls do in deed rule, with a dashing try on the sideline. Player of the week went to Tristan for his grit and determination in being wherever the ball was. U8s: Game one against Grammar saw a close tussle in the first half with fine displays of individual running rugby on both sides. Tries to the Sparks twins, Will and Jack, and Tom was bolstered by strong defensive efforts of Alex, Toby and Louis. The second half was another see-saw spectacle with the well-drilled Grammar team demonstrating strong ball retention skills and putting on a couple of unanswered tries that saw them come out as the eventual winners.

Game Two against the Swans was a more physical tussle with great displays of strong rucking and mauling by the Dragons. Bolstered by Max the axe from U7s, the Dragons did a great job in putting together multiple phases to end in a couple of great tries by Cody. Max demonstrated great tackling technique taking down older and bigger opponents with ease, one resulting in a turn over that saw a great try in the corner by Player of the week, Tom. U13s :Dragons travelled to Maleny to face the boys from Mathew Flinders at altitude. A lack of line speed and some easy missed tackles saw the Dragons march to the shed at halftime five tries to none. The second half saw a revitalised Dragons take to the field no doubt with some key tips ringing in their ears from the Scottish coaching import. An early try to the Drag-

ons courtesy of Big Jake O’Neill started to level the scoreboard. While this try was answered with another 5 points again by the Flinders

backline it also set the scene for a follow up Dragons try to Patty Breen. At full time it was 45 to 10 with the Flinders lads deservedly coming away

victorious. The stand out for the Dragons were their forwards who worked hard all day with their scrums being a match highlight.

Council teamwork scores a goal for local sport NOOSA, Sunshine Coast and Gympie Councils have secured a $75,000 Queensland Government grant to plan for the region’s sporting needs. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the cash was a great opportunity for the three local governments to work together,

particularly identifying opportunities for sports such as shooting, aviation and motocross that can be difficult to accommodate. “Our three councils will consider the facilities that are already available and whether there is any potential or need to develop new infrastructure,” he said. The councils will start

work on the Regional Sports Facility Plan in the next couple of months with completion expected by the end of May 2018. Cr Wellington said the community, local sports organisations and relevant peak sporting bodies would be invited to provide input along the way. The councils’ joint grant

application was the only one in the North Coast Region to secure funding in the first round of the State Government’s new Sport and Recreation Planning program. This project will complement existing and developing sports planning including Noosa Council’s Sport and Active Recreation Plan.

“Securing this funding provides a wonderful opportunity to take a big picture approach to the provision of sports facilities. Sporting enthusiasts often travel across shire boundaries to engage in their passions, so it makes sense for the three councils to work together on this project,” the Mayor said.

THE Impact Boxing crew travelled to Bundaberg last weekend with four of its team members. This event

was held at the Bundaberg PCYC and was well supported with Athletes travelling from all over

Queensland. The four team members were Luke Martin, Lachine Proctor, Chloe Halley and Coen

Allman. First up for Team Impact was Coen Allman. Coen stepped up a weight division to take on a highly

credited boxer in Chris Evers. Coen seemed to struggle a little with finding his rhythm against the taller Evers. The bout was closely contested and the final decision saw Coen loose on a points decision. Chloe’s opponent was Shyla Wakai from New Zealand. Both girls boxed extremely well in a bout that we thought we had definitely done enough to win, Shyla was awarded the split points victory. Lachie Proctor was the next Impact boxer to centre ring. Lachine’s opponent was local Bundaberg boy, Hunter Kimlin. From the opening bell Lachine made it quite clear that he meant business. With Lachie’s aggressive come forward style, he proved too strong for Hunter and Lachine was awarded the win via a majority points decision. Luke Martin v Orion Brown from Gladstone. Luke took the bout to Orion from the opening bell. Luke was awarded the win via a unanimous points victory. “The team all boxed extremely well. As always I am proud of them no matter whether they win, lose or draw,” coach Mark Evans said.
