AFTER two long years of COVID lockdowns and floods getting in the way of training and competitions, the girls program at Cooroy Gymnastics Club is firing up for the first event of the 2022 calendar.

The club reported strong numbers this year within its competitive program, including its largest ever number of Level 3 and over women's artistic gymnasts.

Under the watchful eye of their coaches, the Cooroy Gymnastics Club's girls squad have been perfecting their routines in the lead up to the Sunshine Coast Classic hosted by the Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy at Woombye on May 28 and 29.

The team will back up their performance at Woombye the following weekend (June 4 and 5) at the Maroochy Beach Invitational.

These two Sunshine Coast events will be hotly contested, with clubs coming from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and the Wide Bay Burnett regions to compete in the hope of qualifying for the Queensland Junior State Championships to be held in Brisbane in September later this year.

Good luck girls!

COOROY Tennis has stepped up its technological game to make use of Tennis Australia’s “Book-A-Court” program.

Book-A-Court allows players access to court hire through an online booking and payment system on the Clubspark website.

The four hardcourts in Cooroy may now be booked for casual play by community members, in addition to club members, through the simple online system.

Once a booking is made, a pin code is provided, allowing access to the courts through an electronic gate.

Previously, casual players needed to contact the club secretary, receive a code, unlock a secured cabinet, then use, and later return, a court key, as well as manually record the booking.

Club president Ian Garvey said he expected the new system to boost bookings thanks to its simplicity of use and the increased flexibility it offered members and guests when it came to making the decision to organise a game and then being able to simply go online, find a time to play that suited everyone and pay too.

One important aspect of the system is the integration of court lighting with the booking sytem. Soon, evening bookings will incorporate an automated lighting link, which will enable extended court use for players.

The new system was funded through grants from the State Government and Noosa Shire Council, together with club contributions.

WITH a bit of help from a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant and the expertise of the The Shed Company Cooroy, the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club has gained a new storage shed on its grounds at Johnson Park.

Club secretary Leeona Baxter said it was nice to be able to use a local Cooroy company for the project, especially as they had always been great supporters of the club.

"They were fantastic to deal with from start to finish and I would not hesitate to recommend their services to anyone," Leeona said. "I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of past committee members Simon Crock and Siona Howard." "It takes a lot of behind- the-scenes work to make a project like this happen and both members played an integral role." The new shed provides the club with a secure place to store its trailer and equipment and now allows direct access into the arena. It also provides an additional undercover area for spectators.

Leeona said the club had a strong core of active members who went out of their way to help strengthen its foundations. "Members came together for a working bee after the recent floods to clean up the grounds and transfer the equipment into the new shed," Leeona said. "That's what I love about our club, the sense of community and working together. We currently have about 50 members who all pitch in to get the job done."

While the club has secured its major sponsors for the year, it is still in need of sponsors for 10 trophy sets at $100 each set. The trophies will be presented after competition days.

COOROY Golf Club manager Wayne Patston has offered a big thank you to Club president Terri Cairns, pictured left, for coming up with the idea of a flood appeal raffle to help cover the cost of repairs to the course, and for helping to source prizes. "To our amazement we collected over 45 gifts and we raised $4000 in cash - this was supported by our members and the community," Wayne said.

He said State MP Rob Skelton was among the guests when the raffle prizes were drawn - and he also wanted to thank Wooly and Cam Darby for their help on the day.

Hamilton clan bowling them over at Cooroy

AFTER 52 years playing lawn bowls in Cooroy, Gordon Hamilton could certainly teach the next generation a thing or two!

Every Wednesday night, Gordon can be found on the greens with his son Craig and his grandchildren Kaleb and Bronte, all pictured right, in the Business Bowls Competition.

For the Hamiltons it's a great way to spend time out each week as a family and they're encouraging others to come along and try out the fun.

If you are interested in learning to play lawn bowls, social bowls are played every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at the Cooroy Community Bowls Club located at the Saw & Mill Restaurant, 5 Opal Street, Cooroy.

No need to book, simply turn up at noon to join in.

For more information, call the Club's president, Maureen - 0419 588 661.

Your Voice! Your Budget!

The proposed 2022-23 Council Budget is now out for community feedback.

The recent Liveability Survey, completed by over 1600 people, has helped shape the draft 2022-23 budget. We have also endeavoured to meet community expectations, deliver a significant capital works program and fund over 100 different services to the community.

The ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the 2022 February floods have placed added pressure on shaping this draft budget. Like you, increases in fuel, insurance and goods and services have also added pressure on Council’s costs.

Council is asking for your views on a range of budget initiatives and projects.

CONSULTATION STARTS MONDAY MAY 23 UNTIL SUNDAY JUNE 5 AT MIDNIGHT.
