Sheena Shaves for a Cure CANCER effects everyone, from the people who have it, to the carers, the children, friends and family. Shave for a Cure raises funds for blood cancer research, a diagnosis that affected over 12,000 Australians this year. Sheena Ladley said she decided to Shave for a Cure after one of her good friend passed away from blood cancer. “Sadly I lost my friend, then I was diagnosed with cancer myself. Luckily mine was able to be removed. So this year I had the idea of doing a fundraiser to help find a cure,” said Sheena. Her family fun day at Novotel Twin Waters earlier this month raised a massive $6908.80. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their wonderful support. The many businesses who donated vouchers and gifts towards raffles and prizes, the entertainers, my husband James, my mother who worked tirelessly with me to help make the day happen, and my beautiful daughter Tekaya and her best friend Keira who also bravely decided to shave their heads for the cause.” Sheena said after Tekaya put her hand up her father Dennis decided if his daughter and

Fusion Festival an outstanding success It was impossible to estimate how many locals and visitors attended the recent Cooroy Fusion Festival but everyone involved seem to agree that it was, by far, the biggest and best yet. Originating with the opening of the Cooory Library in 2010, the festival has become an annual event locals look

forward to and, along with Noosa Council the Cooroy Community Bank branch was again a presenting partner. The festival has grown rapidly to become a major event on the town’s calendar. Held in conjunction with the annual shows of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club and the Noosa District Orchid and

Foliage Society, it offers something for everyone and this year was certainly no exception. The day kicked off under clear blue skies with a motorcade of 29 classic cars, courtesy of both the Cooroy Combined and Noosa Beach car clubs. It really is quite amazing the collection of truly

iconic cars that are garaged around the hinterland. The Hinternoosa animal farm was a first for the roof of the library and there was standing room only in the main tent for the Fiona Winter Realty wildlife experience that included everything from a saltwater crocodile to a 20 kg wombat. The audience, young

and old, seemed enthralled to get up close and personal with such a host of amazing Australian animals. A new look market place was considered a winner as was the wide variety of gourmet foods on offer. Nobody would have gone home hungry. Continued on Page 3

Fusion Festival an outstanding success Continued from Page 1 Another first was that all the entertainment on the main stage in the Bendigo Bank marquee was all home grown and they were fabulous. Even the MC was local, namely Councillor Sandy Bolton, who excelled with the introductions, starting with three school schoolgirls from St Theresa’s College in Noosaville, performing under the name of Triple Minx. They really rocked. Next it was the ever popular Andrea Kirwin and her band, treating the audience to her own unique style of music. To close off the afternoon, it was the local boy made good, Isaac McGovern, who made a name for himself in the 2014 series of the Channel Nine show, The Voice. Isaac’s performance confirmed for everyone that there really is a wealth of talent on the Sunshine Coast. Making its debut at Fusion was Supa IGA bubble soccer and judging by the continual line-up to put on a bubble and give it a go, it was a real hit for the kids, both big and small. A body art display was also quite unique since in addition to the traditional models, the artists also painted a horse. That’s right, a real live horse. The end result was quite stunning. Whilst all this was going on there was an equally impressive and creative program in both the Library and the Butter Factory, offering everything from a LEGO lounge to a pop up photo both. There really was something for everyone. So that’s it for 2015 and planning is already underway for next year’s festival. Organizing such an event would not be possible without the generosity and support of the Noosa Council, Noosa Tourism and a whole host of local businesses. Volunteers also play a large part in it and anyone wishing to get involved at any level, then they should contact the Chairperson, Chris Bell on 0412 043 843.

WHY do the pollies make such a meal of our life, And take such delight in stirring up strife? One day they declare things ae terrible, we’re running out of money, Next day they change their tune, we’re back with the milk and honey. Australia’s going fine, the population is nice and quiet, Suddenly they are talking tax, and they fear they’ll cause a riot!! Everyone was complaining, the aged, the young, the doctors, the healthy, The academics, the students, the country folk, even the wealthy. Nobody could understand anything, everyone was hopelessly confused, And one thing was obvious, the citizens were not amused. Education was in confusion, child care was academically muddled, The pension and superannuation system, admittedly befuddled.

Why not call the whole thing off, get everything back to Zero, Then take a deep breath, and start again – it doesn’t need a super hero. Stop arguing, start co-operating, use some common sense, Make decisions, debate them properly, stop sitting on the fence, If you have a problem, calling an expert shouldn’t always be your aim, Though an expert is really useful, to help you share the blame,

Mud Therapy at the Butter Factory

What’s in a name?

THE therapeutic qualities of mud have been recognised for centuries; historical records suggesting that mud packs and baths have antiinflammatory, detoxifying, analgesic, relaxing and revitalizing properties. Artist in Residence at the Cooroy Butter Factory PopUp Art Exhibition, ceramicist Lisa Brummel, agrees stating she finds working with clay very cathartic. “While my passion was hand raised metal forms when undertaking my degree at Monash, it wasn’t until I did a Diploma in Creative Arts at the then Tewantin TAFE that I fell in love with ceramics. Pouring myself into the clay I often achieve an almost meditative state,” says Lisa. “I pull and tug and whack the clay” Lisa reveals as she hits the soft clay pot with a potter’s paddle. “The process

Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy

Lisa Brummel at the Butter Factory can be very therapeutic”. “And oxymoronically the clay is very forgiving . When it’s surrendered to the flames of the kiln, it’s almost serendipitous as its glazes change to iridescent copper and blues and reds.” Lisa said she was delighted to be invited to be Artist in Residence at the PopUp Art Exhibition, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to be with the exceptional exhibiting artists and to see myself in the public’s eyes.” Lisa welcomes the exhibition visitors to sit with her, learn and work with some clay if they’d like. “And to also touch and feel my creations. The soul of the product can only be experienced when you touch: you don’t get that when you just look”, says Lisa. Lisa Brummel is Artist in Residence at the PopUp Art Series Exhibition at the Butter Factory Arts Centre Cooroy until 30 June. THE federal budget has understandably got us all thinking. How does this budget affect you? What about your business? Small business seems to be the big winner in this years’ budget and it has also got our community talking. If you’re thinking about starting a small business, it’s important to start at the very beginning – such as what you’re going to name it. Getting the name of your business right has to say a lot about you or at least make potential customers curious. It has to be easy to use. Is the name very easy to understand? Spell, type, talk about or refer to? Is the name easy to say? Will someone hesitate to use it? Tongue-twisters are no fun for anyone and some letters are harder to say than others. Are you using a ‘quirky’ combination of letters, numbers and other elements to make it stand apart? Is it powerful and different? Is the name unique or as close to unique as possible in your industry? Is it a ‘one of a kind’ word-mark in your space? Consumers and customers are inundated with mediocre names and shopping experiences. Make it highly relevant! Does the name fit the personality of your brand and the type of business you’re in? Does it quickly convey something about your business or product? Can it be trusted and respected?

The use of a surname is usually the first choice for small business and professional services but this can bring unique problems. Does the name suggest different things to different groups at different times? Is your intended meaning clear and easily understood? Or are you spending a lot of extra money explaining it to people over and over again? Successful businesses usually get that way by being clear, focused and consistent. Give your brand the time necessary to create that associated reputation, image or badge. If you would like to discuss financing a small business or any other banking matter, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott

COOROY Police continue to utilise information supplied by members of the community to help in the war against drugs in our community. Recently, Cooroy Police and members of the Noosa CIB teamed up and executed several Search Warrants on premises in Cooroy and the surrounding hinterland. The end result being 14 offenders being dealt with on a total of 29 drug related charges. I often ask for drug information in my media releases so by advising the public of our actions in regards this information is a good way of assuring the community that drug information supplied to the police is always treated with a high degree of confidentiality and seriousness. Drugs effect all levels of our society so any information that we receive is always investigated and acted upon when we are able to substantiate the information supplied. In one of the more sizeable seizures of drugs in recent times premises in Pinbarren were targeted with over 100 mature cannabis plants located and drying cannabis. A 52 year old female has been

charged with serious drug charges and has appeared in the Noosa Heads Magistrates Court. Information can be given to the police by phoning your local police station or by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Quantities of methamphetamines more commonly known as ICE are also starting to be located around the area so police are very keen to stop the spread of this very dangerous and highly addictive drug so any information in regards the use and or supply of this drug would be very much appreciated. Regular readers of my police reports would know that I place a high priority upon the enforcement of the road rules and especially the Fatal Five of causes of serious and fatal traffic accidents. Most of us know by now that Speed, not wearing a seatbelt, fatigue, drink driving and mobile phones and inattention are all contributors to our road toll however sometimes I feel that an extra one should be added to the list namely “stupidity.” To highlight the difficult task police have in trying to control bad driving behaviour and people making extremely poor

choices, a recent Cooroy police patrol intercepted a vehicle driving along Garnet St, Cooroy which had two teenagers clinging to the outside roof of the car as it gathered speed intent on driving home. The vehicle was intercepted and the two males on the roof ran from the scene leaving the driver and two other occupants of the car to face the music. Subsequent investigations and a breath Analysis led to the 19 year old Pomona resident being charged with a high range drinking driving charge of 0.158 grams. The driver then appeared in court and was given a fine of $1400 and disqualified from driving for 14 months which is a small price to pay for what could have been a fatality if not for the timely intervention of the police. I suppose those same teenagers that were on the roof are now bagging the coppers for taking their mate’s license off him and causing him to have such a large fine and of course not for one moment would they consider that their lives have quite literally been saved by the police. What is even more concerning is that out of the five teenagers involved in this bad behaviour not one had

the intestinal fortitude to stand up and tell his mates to pull their heads in and suggest calling someone sober to drive them home and get their mates off the roof. Can I ask every parent who reads this to reinforce to their kids that poor choices such as outlines above often have dire consequences and drum into their kids never ever to get into a car where the driver is suspected of being over the limit. Cooroy police will also be launching an initiative called “turning the screws on Crime” which will be coordinated by our “Volunteer in Policing” (VIP) member, Anne Winning. This initiative will be conducted on Saturday the 18th July, 2015 from 9am to 11am in the car parking area in Elm st, Cooroy outside the Cooroy State School. Members of the Cooroy Police, Rotary and the Local SES will be on scene fitting cars with tamper proof one way screws which make the theft of registration plates extremely difficult. This service will be done free of charge and will make it more difficult for thieves to steal number plates and use them to commit other crimes around the area.

Further information will be released to the public in the next issue of the Rag. You may recall reading in this newspaper a few months ago that Cooroy’s police volunteer, Anne Winning, was about to undertake a community policing project for Cooroy’s businesses. Sergeant Mal Scott is pleased to inform the Cooroy community that Anne has visited every business to collect up-todate data on business owners and emergency contact phone numbers. “This means that if an incident occurs after hours the police attending the scene can quickly access the correct contact person and phone number, said Sergeant Scott. “I found it an interesting project,” said Anne. “I enjoyed meeting the people and I learned a lot about the many and varied businesses going on in Cooroy. We certainly have many hardworking, enterprising people in our town. Everyone was appreciative of this police initiative, as its aim to help protect their business. Thank you to everyone for promptly filling out the form... and thanks to the coffee-shop owner who gave me a free coffee!

New club formed for recreational trail horse riders RECREATIONAL horse riders on the Sunshine Coast have formed a new club that will cater for noncompetitive, friendly trail riding experiences for the whole family to enjoy. The Sunny Coast Trail Horse Riders Club is affiliated with ATHRA (the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association), the peak body for recreational riders. Affiliation with ATHRA provides comprehensive insurance coverage while on ATHRA rides, an emphasis on

safety through accreditation of trail co-ordinators and a voice at all levels of government regarding access. ATHRA began in 1972 as a way to bring together people who love bush riding and to establish the National Trail. The founder was RM Williams and his legacy lives today with the Bicentennial National Trail extending from Cooktown to Tasmania, making it the longest, continuous multiuse trail in the world. ATHRA has grown to be a

national organisation with over a hundred clubs offering low cost leisure riding for people of all ages to enjoy. The new club will organise monthly rides in the Sunshine Coast region across a wide variety of terrain. These could be one day rides only, or could be weekend rides with a campfire (where permitted) and overnight camping. It doesn’t matter what type of horse or equipment you have, you can join in. If you are looking for new

places to ride, new people to meet and an opportunity for your horse to socialise and experience a range of different terrain and conditions, then this club may be just what you’re looking for.

Pop Up Exhibition attracts art lovers

AROUND 200 art aficionados attended the opening night of the latest entry on Noosa arts calendar: the new PopUp Art Series at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy. This innovative exhibition concept is the brainchild of Noosa Regional Gallery Director Nina Shadforth and well known arts community leader Tricia Bradford. Together they encouraged over 50 local talented artists and artisans to participate providing Noosa residents and visitors the experience of a rolling changing exhibition each month. Renowned local artist, author, photographer and politician, Councillor Tony Wellington, opened the exhibition. ‘The Arts bring communities together’ Tony said. “This exhibition is a wonderful example of this’. The Butter Factory over the next four months will be home to exhibits from over 50 artists and craftspersons featuring an interesting, unique, wide and diverse range of two and three dimensional art including paintings in all media, sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, jewelry, fabric and wearable art. The entire display will be changed on a monthly basis, along with PopUp! Studios and PopUp! Resident Artists. There will be artist demonstrations, workshops, tours, artists’ talks and children’s programs.

New arts facility at Eumundi AFTER four concerted years of community work Eumundi now has a shining new arts facility funded by the Australian Government and the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA). Mrs Donata Page, President of the EHA described this achievement as one of great commitment and perseverance by many in Eumundi. “The first application for funds was unsuccessful in 2011/2012 but didn’t deter Eumundi and we found success in May 2013”. The project is valued at $250K and will provide workshop, training and exhibition space for local artists, artisans and

community groups. Project Manager, Dr. Sue Campin said “We won’t need to have meetings squeezed amongst heritage and visitor information exhibits anymore and the new facility provides and new and valuable link with the Eumundi arts community. The Sunshine Coast Council has assisted the project by working with the Eumundi and District Historical Association Inc. to create an all-weather vehicle access-way into the facility to ensure easy access for people with disabilities and for the movement of large arts and cultural heritage pieces.

Guides from Possum and Wombat Units with their girl guide cookies “GIRL Guides has never been more relevant than it is today”, says Cooroy District’s provisional leader Della van der Heijden of the institution founded in 1910. “We live in a risk adverse society where children cannot climb a tree or explore their own environments. “We’re here to change that and develop young women into community minded confident participants in life,” insists Della, who oversees Cooroy’s two patrols, the Possums and Wombats. “The unit names like everything else have been selected by the girls”, smiles Della, known fondly to the girls by her guiding name Bunyip. “Each unit has their own leader and a second because our mission, at Girl Guides Australia, is to help girls and young women grow into confident, independent, self-respecting, responsible community members who make decisions for themselves.” Sunshine Coast locals have Della’s passion to thank for providing this solely female domain for her daughter Alana and other local lasses. The Cooroy District hut, which had lain dormant for six years reopened late last year [2014]. Located at 41 Miva St. Cooroy tonight there are 18 girls and young women who participate in a range of activities, including a treasure hunt, various crafts and games. They are in fact learning the art of mateship and leadership. “It’s the best thing I have ever done, making friends and having fun”, laughs one of the younger members 7 year-old Pip from Eumundi. Like her other team members, Pip is blithely

unaware that she is now part of the world’s largest organisation of young women with 10m guides worldwide. 30,000 of which are Australian, including 22,000 youth members and 6,300 Queenslanders. “We want to give a new generation of young women the chance to learn about teamwork, leadership and community service in a safe environment”, says Della of the organisation that has seen over 1m Australian women take up the navy sash. “We do this by providing a safe and inclusive environment that encourages the girls to challenge themselves and achieve their own goals by utilising a Patrol System. “What that means is that girls within their own group, known as a unit, elect their own leader and have a voice to discover, decide, plan, participate and develop their very own tailored program, with the guidance of an adult leader such as myself or Dominique Laughton”. “To date the girls, who range from ages 517, have opted learn first aid, orienteering and outdoor camping skills. “They chose first aid to enhance their opportunities to land local babysitting roles”. Della went on to explain that offering these youngsters management roles and a direct say in what they do has far reaching outcomes. Not only do they learn to use their talents and abilities in planning and policy-making, doing so builds their self-esteem and sense of well being which can be sadly lacking for some young women in a male dominated world. “I for one have very fond memories of my time in Girl Guides from when I was a Brownie in Gosford at 6 all the way up to my time in Darwin Guides at 13”, enthuses Carmen Plumb mother to Possum and Wombat patrol members Caitlin, 6, and Emma, 9. “For me it was the life long friendships, camping, sewing on buttons, songs, games, knot tying and just generally be outdoors physically challenging myself that I enjoyed the most. So it was a no brainer to enrol my girls”, says the Cooran local. With girls coming from all over the hinterland to take part in the weekly meets on a Thursday lasting from 4.30pm – 6.30pm during term time, Della is keen to point out that there are a

large range of indoor and outdoor activities. Planned to match the girls’ abilities, they range from regular camps, expeditions, community service and hikes to hands on practical skills. All of which are designed to help each girl realise her potential by delivering a hands-on immersive experience of the Guiding motto that ‘Guides can do anything’. If you’re interested in joining Guides offer you a 4-week trial, which enables you to participate in all activities and really experience Guiding before making the decision to join. VOLUNTEER tourism can help you make the transition to retirement and improve your quality of life. We’re all at different stages in life. You might be coming up for long-service leave and looking for a different kind of sabbatical. You might be making the transition to retirement and reducing your work hours, while looking to give something back and help others. Or you might be newly retired and wondering what to do with all this newfound time on your hands. Whatever stage you’re at, volunteer tourism could be the answer. ‘Voluntourism’ is a great way of combining leisure and sightseeing with the opportunity to work for a charity or other worthwhile cause. Helping you ease into retirement Retirement used to represent a sharp break with the past – one day you were working full time, the next you were sitting at home with the rest of your life ahead of you. These days, the transition to retirement doesn’t have to be quite so abrupt. Many Australians are keeping themselves active and engaged by continuing

for longer in the workforce on a part-time basis. With a Transition to Retirement strategy, you can use your super and an income stream to make the transition and set a retirement date that suits you. And in the meantime you can combine your love of travel with giving something back by volunteering. Matching your skills to local needs The best of voluntourism is an experience that’s mutually beneficial. You come away with a sense that you’ve really helped out and the locals get some tangible, practical benefits that improve their quality of life. It’s important to make sure your skills are being put to good use. A good approach is to work out where you could be the most help. It could be anything from teaching to building or nursing. If words are your passion, what about teaching kids in Indonesia? If you’re handy with a spade, what about building irrigation channels in an African village? Or if you’re an experienced counsellor, what about conducting drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs in the northern

Indian foothills? More than meets the eye Many volunteer tourists travel to the most impoverished parts of the world to help disadvantaged communities. But voluntourism can take many shapes and forms. Ever thought about renovating low income housing in central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan? Or organising a multicultural arts festival in Croatia? Or collecting data on river otters in Chile? You could find yourself doing something quite unexpected, but challenging and worthwhile. Help yourself by helping others More than one in three Australians, or 5.4 million people, are estimated to take part in volunteering. We spoke to one of them – Julian Lefcovitch, Manager, Platform Relationship at AMP. He says, “I love travelling and never find it difficult to fill my four weeks of annual leave with adventures. But I’m also passionate about lending a hand to those who are less fortunate. Combining these two things is extremely rewarding. In 2011, I travelled to

Tanzania to visit a school, being constructed by an Australian charity called the Katoke Trust for Overseas Aid (visit katoke.com.au for more information). The charity was looking for volunteers to help raise awareness about the living conditions faced by many local Tanzanians.” One of the most rewarding moments for Julian was meeting Isaac, the student he sponsors. “As we were about to leave, I gave Isaac a blanket as a gift. He thanked me over and over again, then offered me one of the two live chickens the family owned, saying, ‘This is a gift from me to you.’ I was so humbled. He was a little disappointed to hear of the strict quarantine laws in Australia when I handed back the chicken and thanked him for this incredible gesture. I was struck by his generous nature, which was not uncommon in Tanzania. Tanzanians have so little, yet they are so selfless, kind hearted and welcoming.” As a seasoned ‘voluntourist,’ Julian has no hesitations recommending it to others. “It’s a mutually beneficial experience that

will change your perspective on what’s important.” As well as helping others, volunteering can be a way of helping yourself. Volunteering has been shown to result in lower rates of depression, better physical health and even improvements in mortality rates. Volunteering can help you: • meet new people • learn new skills • gain confidence and a sense of achievement • improve your mental and physical health • discover new hobbies and interests. *Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd ABN 52 149 014 are authorised representative and credit representative of AMP Financial Planning Pty Limited AFS Licence No. 232706 What you need to know: Any advice in this editorial is of a general nature only and does not take into account the objectives, financial situation or needs of any particular person. COOROY RAG

Wellington’s Way

Purplicious

by MP Peter Wellington I recently referred the matter of road congestion in Cooroy to the District Director of Department of Transport and Main Road and the following is a copy of the advice I have received in reply. Thank you for your further query regarding congestion at Cooroy intersections, particularly east of the railway line at Myall and Elm streets. TMR acknowledges that congestion is experienced during peak periods in the Cooroy town centre and motorists experience some delays at Myall and Elm streets and Diamond and Elm streets intersections. TMR receives many requests for improvement works at intersections and allocates funding for these improvements on a priority basis. Priorities are determined by considering site specific parameters that primarily include crash history, but may also include other factors such as traffic volumes, geometry and visibility. A review of TMR’s crash database shows these intersections both have low crash histories and are not considered a high priority for funding as there are other intersections across the state and within North Coast District demonstrating a greater need. As you are aware, TMR is working closely with Noosa Council to consider future east-west

connections between coastal areas and towns such as Cooroy in the Northern part of the Sunshine Coast. While these investigations take a regional approach, localised issues are also being considered as part of the future transport requirements for the area. The investigations are in a preliminary phase and the link between, and including these two intersections, has been highlighted as a priority area for consideration. I can advise that Noosa Council is developing options for possible improvements to the intersections for TMR to review. TMR will continue to work alongside council to progress these options. Once the strategy is finalised, further investigation will be required to determine the best solutions for the area, taking into account forecast transport requirements. TMR will then consider funding for any improvements during future reviews of the program. TMR will continue to monitor performance of these intersections and continue routine maintenance in the area. for Doug Wass District Director (North Coast) | North Coast District Program Delivery And Operations | Department of Transport and Main Roads

news Meet the new owners of DG Posi-Track Mulching

Letters to the editor I JUST wanted to drop a quick note – to say what a wonderful time we had at your Fusion Festival on the weekend! What a fabulous festival – great foodies, stalls, entertainment, everything was fab! I personally had never been to Cooroy and was so impressed by the warmth and atmosphere in the town. Everyone we met was so lovely and interested in what we do – saving cats and dogs! We raised $550 from raffle and donations on the day – a lovely and unexpected success! We hope you will have us back again next year. Penny Brischke / Jody Blackburn Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge ON behalf of the Sub Branch, thank you for your great coverage of the events over the ANZAC weekend (including, of course, the Troop Train Re-enactment). You did us proud, as always. I hope that you were able to join in the occasion. Cooroy at its best! I’m sure that there were probably quite a few ‘flitches’ behind the scenes (aren’t there always?) but they certainly didn’t show. As volunteer ladies handing out gift bags to the ‘train people’, we all heard so many comments from them about Cooroy – what a pretty place it was, and the people so friendly! Great atmosphere – great day! Thank you again for your important part in it. Angie Cull, Sub Branch Secretary

MEET Sash and Tanya Nicholls, the new owners of DG Posi-Track Mulching. DG Posi-Track Mulching has been operating on the Sunshine Coast for 8 years. Sash and Tanya have been in the arboricultural industry for over 12 years, they recently sold their successful Sunshine Coast tree business in 2013 allowing them to set off travelling. Since returning late last year, they have been researching what type of business would suit their skills and passion. Sash being a qualified Arborist and having a passion for the industry coupled with his extensive experience with machinery and with Tanya’s strong management and organizational skills, DG Posi-Track Mulching was the perfect fit. DG Posi-Track Mulching operates a 100hp Skid steer loader with a 1.5m wide forestry mulcher attachment, the rotary drum equipped with tungsten chipper teeth can easily shred vegetation up to 200mm in diameter (8inches). The machine is ideal for rural acreage properties for vegetation

management like removing invasive species such as lantana and wild tobacco, removal of regrowth, fallen or rotten trees. We can create fire breaks/trails by removing fuel loads that increase the potential for fire and clear fence lines and property boundaries for easy maintenance. Why choose this method? Traditional land clearing methods often present an increased risk of erosion by pushing over trees, uprooting the stump and roots, and substantially disturbing soils. In contrast, mulching the vegetation leaves the soil structure intact. The mulched material will be left on the ground and will act as an erosion barrier while returning nutrients back into the soil through decomposition. Over time, grass will naturally grow through the mulch and can be maintained with mowing. DG Posi-Track Mulching offers a quicker, easier and more cost effective way of clearing land. Call Sash and Tanya for a no obligation quote on 0412 020 789 and remember – Don’t Push and Burn – Mulch it!

risk appreciation of the consequences of inappropriate risk-taking behaviours. The students were shown how to develop advanced observation techniques by using their vision more effectively and how to avoid being involved in a potentially dangerous traffic situation by managing time and space. Roadcraft driver educator Nico Blankestyn explained to the students that if they were able to identify risk and avoid danger earlier, there would be less need for more advanced driving skills. The students were provided with the opportunity to experience the feel of an emergency

brake situation firsthand, behind the wheel of a vehicle, and under the guidance of an instructor, they attempted to turn the skidding vehicle first with and then without the assistance of ABS braking. The students also learnt about the importance of paying a little bit extra for good quality tyres, how to perfectly inflate a tyre; and the most effective way to hold a steering wheel and position the driver’s seat. “I really enjoyed the practical nature of the course,” Year 11 student Taniah Reinhardt said. NDSHS Kokoda team in training

Girls just wanna have fun!

THE Noosa District State High School Kokoda Challenge team completed an easy 6 kilometre training session, scaling Mount Coolum from one side to the other and back after school. Kokoda Challenge student and teacher team members were accompanied by teachers and a student who joined in the training session for fun and fitness. The trek was fast-paced, and at the summit, a clear, breath-taking panorama of Coolum down to Maroochydore was enjoyed. Winter woollies were quickly discarded, despite the cool weather, as the team took the dirt, rocky trail down the Western side of the mountain; a trail, which many (even locals) don’t realise, is there. The mountain was again scaled from the dirt track, after reaching the base and the team took the stairs (two or three at a time) back to the car park. “This training session was fun and one of the easiest we have done. When I last climbed Mt Coolum it seemed more difficult. It could be because I’m fitter, older and we have done far greater distances in previous training,” Year 12 student team leader Gabbie Hill said.

Noosa District State High School Year 12 students visited businesses within the Cooroy community last week to see if they were able to provide funds to support the school’s teacher and student Kokoda Challenge teams. The Year 12 students asked local companies and organisations pay $20 for the opportunity to win advertising on the NDSHS snazzy new billboard, which is located out the front of the school. Those interested in participating placed their business card into a container, with the ‘winner’ drawn out and decided next Tuesday. $650 was donated through the Year 12 students’ (Kriquet Thompson, Gabbie Hill, Ryan Palfrey and Eloise Vanderveen) efforts.

IT may take two teams of 18 players to make magic on the footy field, but one of our local clubs has been doing that for the past 42 years. The Cooroy/Pomona & District Australian Rules Football Club continue to be a proud and successful club in our community and this season isn’t any different. The Demons proudly wear the blue and yellow

colours wherever they go and an amazing committee of volunteers continues to actively promote health, fitness, teamwork and fun amongst their players, families and supporters. Club Registrar, Sue Hobbs says it’s the development of younger grades that feeds the club’s success. “We like to think we’re one of the friendliest

clubs around. So many families have come to play here and have stayed. It’s part of our Demons culture and that’s what makes a successful footy club I think,” Sue said. “We have with junior teams from under 6’s through to under 17’s, competitive seniors’ teams and we round off with our entertaining and slightly slower paced

Masters’ team. The Demons, like all clubs need help to keep things rolling by attracting sponsors to the club, and recently they welcomed their newest one in the form of Bendigo Bank. Having recently opened its Pomona Agency in town to join its very successful Cooroy Community Bank branch, Sue, the 2015

committee and players welcomed manager Geoff Edwards to training last week to spend time with those who make the magic happen. “We’re extremely grateful to Geoff and his team at Bendigo Bank for sponsoring us in 2015. Their contribution has assisted us in providing up to date training and game day equipment for our teams. It’s also great to be sponsored by those who are as passionate about our community as we are and give so much back,” Sue added. Geoff Edwards said he sees the sponsorship of the Demons as a great fit. “I’ve had a blast getting to know club members these past few months. The Demons are made up of great people who have built their club from the ground up. From the playing fields to the clubhouse and everywhere in between, the club is filled with energy and pride. We see this sponsorship as a great way to support the club now and in the seasons ahead,” Geoff said. If you would like further information about the Cooroy/Pomona & District Australian Rules Football Club, contact Sue Hobbs on 0410 065 004 to find out more.

THE Noosa Botanic Gardens are a short drive from the hinterland town of Cooroy, on the shores of Lake Macdonald. The gardens comprise eight hectares of native and exotic plant species. The gardens are home to an abundance of wildlife. Other features of the gardens include: an open-air bush chapel; a fern house; a lily pond; large lawn areas with winding paths leading to picnic areas; a Greek style amphitheatre (a circular structure with rows of seats). The site was originally farmland. Council resumed the site in the late 1950s. Part of the site was used to create the Lake Macdonald water supply. The site was used to dump rubbish until local resident Ida Duncan approached council for permission to clear the site. With the help of other locals, Ida Duncan cleared the area of weeds and car bodies. Funding from a government community employment program was used to start construction of the botanic gardens in 1987. When the program ended, council appointed two full time staff to continue construction and maintenance of the gardens. Former Noosa Shire Parks Curator, Bob Bickley designed the layout of the gardens. Council has funded the gardens since 1988. The Noosa Botanic Gardens officially opened to the public in August 1990.

Many long term residents will recall “the Piano Man” Trevor Jones, who used to play a wooden piano outside Petes café. We have found Trevor at 80 years of age, he has been up on Black Mountain building from scratch his 15th open wheeler so that he can reclaim his title of the fastest man up the Noosa Hill – he is aiming for sub 52 secs ! He also rediscovered his 3000 sheets of music, everything from classical, jazz, rock or honkytonk

“The Jazz Man” Chris Cummings that date back to the days he used to perform on TV with Brian Hendersons 6 o’clock Rock. At 80 he has lost none of his sense of rhythm and can be enjoyed any Saturday night accompanying the seafood with Mozart but always concluding the evening with his signature song “The Piano Man” Chris Cummings began jazz studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Don Burrows tuition when he was 16. After playing in session and bands he moved to Cooroy to teach in 1990. A consummate musician himself. Chris has probably taught and influenced more aspiring musicians than any other music teacher in the area

birthjourney and the experience of finally holding their baby in their arms. Especially for the Mother the excitement of the birth and responses of family and friends may make it difficult to rest, and the baby’s need for frequent feeds and cuddles around the clock can result in absolutely exhausted parents heading out of the hospital carpark with their special cargo strapped into his baby capsule. These early weeks at home with your new baby provide a precious time for parents and baby to bond as a family – this is your Babymoon. Midwife Lois Wattis has helped hundreds of families make this huge transition – here are her top tips: Cuddle baby skin to skin with Mum and with Dad often. This will enhance the hormones of love

which enable bonding and breastfeeding, and also comforts baby especially if she is unsettled or overtired. Accept help with daily chores but keep visitors to a minimum in the early days. Rest together, and allow yourselves to have private quiet times enjoying and exploring your new life as parents. Embrace the concept of your life following a 24 hour cycle for the first few months, and let go of “day and night” expectations. Understanding and accepting that this pattern is part of the new parent deal will help you to go with the flow of getting up in the night and permitting yourself to sleep in the daytime when you need to do so. This can be a real struggle for women who are used to being highly organised with everything in order. Exhaustion and

sleep deprivation are a high price to pay for a tidy house, and the reassuring news is – it doesn’t last forever! Lois is holding

LED Light Therapy at Lakeridge What is LED light therapy? NASA technology originally developed for plant growth experiments on space shuttle missions. LEDs are light sources releasing energy in the form of photons. They release long wavelengths of light that stimulate cells to aid in healing. A Nobel Prize was awarded to Niels Ryberg Finsen over 100 years ago for his advancements in the use of red light therapy in treating smallpox and lupus outbreaks in the late 1890’s. Blue Light Therapy for Acne How it Works: Specific wavelengths of blue light target the strain of bacteria that plays a pivotal role in causing acne for many people. The light causes the development of oxygen radicals that kill P. acnes bacteria without damaging healthy skin. Photo shows improvement after 4 sessions of LED. Red Light Therapy for Wrinkles How it Works: Wavelengths of red light which help to improve the skin’s barrier function by improving the ability to retain key elements needed to heal and generate new collagen after production has slowed due to age or cumulative damage. Red light LEDs are also believed to target the skin’s oil glands to reduce cytokines, a class of proinflammatory substances believed to play a role in chronic acne. Infrared Light Therapy for cell healing How it Works: Infrared light therapy is essentially the same as red light therapy,

Before and after LED light therapy except infrared energy is invisible, and it penetrates the body deeper than red, reaching deep into soft tissues, muscles, joints, and bone. Photo shows improvement after 1 session of LED. LED treatments are administered with minimal discomfort and approximately an hour of redness to the area treated for an hour post treatment. Prices are $50 for 20 minute session. Please call or email for further information. Some of Lakeridges clients have already seen fantastic results from LED treatment on damaged muscles and ligaments. Plus hooray, it is finally here! Lakeridge’s long awaited IPL machine. Call for details on 5442 6239, and keep an eye out for our full page advert and details soon in The Rag.

COOROY RAG “The Elephant in the Room” – exploring anxiety and depression ON Wednesday 17 June, the next Community Connect morning tea hosted by the Pomona Community House will explore two different sides of “the elephant in the room”. Dale English from beyondblue will be speaking about something that she refers to as ‘the elephant in the room’ – the often hidden conditions of anxiety and depression. Dale is passionate about beginning to dispel the myths and stigmas surrounding these conditions, especially in the senior community. Dale is an educator by training and by nature, having worked extensively in the NSW and QLD education systems. She is now a volunteer speaker with beyondblue, a national organisation that works to raise awareness about anxiety and depression, aiming to reduce the associated stigma and to encourage people to get help. Following Dale’s informative talk, there will be a change of pace provided by comedy duo, ‘Misfits’. Laughter, they

Dale English say, is the best medicine. The Misfits will explore the humour in everyday situations and present this in the form of short skits, taking you with them into their delightfully hilarious world. The Misfits, otherwise known as Jim and Helen, started with an idea for a single skit over a year ago and now, they say, ideas come rushing nonstop. ‘Misfits’ have performed at the Cooran Acoustic Night and at other ‘Open Mic’ venues on the Sunshine Coast. Venue: Lawson Shed, Memorial Avenue, Pomona on Wednesday 17 June from 9.30am - 11am. Cost: Gold coin donation (includes morning tea). Bookings please: 5 4 8 5 2427

Chiropractors can get your happy back SPINAL Health Week 2015 runs from May 25 to 31 and this year the chiropractors at Life Enhancing Chiropractic are encouraging you to ‘Get Your Happy Back’. “Every day more and more Australians experience disabling low back pain, neck pain and headaches, limiting their ability to work and engage in an active healthy life” said chiropractor Dr Adam Roache. One explanation for this is the negative impact an increasingly sedentary lifestyle has on postural fitness. ‘Think about all the hour you spend each day sitting at work or school, commuting, on your computer or other mobile device and watching television.” “Poor posture increases pressure on your spine which can cause lower back pain, neck pain and headaches and fatigue” Dr Adam said. Lower back pain is a growing problem and now ranks second in Australasia and seventh in the world according to the World Health Organisation’s latest Global Burden of Disease study. Neck pain is also problematic ranking

ninth in Australasia and 21st in the world. If you suffer from back pain, neck pain or headaches or if poor postural fitness in impacting on your ability to live life to the fullest, visit a chiropractor at Life Enhancing Chiropractic and Get Your Happy Back. Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between body structure (primarily the spine and pelvis) and function (primarily the spine and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how this relationship can restore and maintain health. Chiropractic care is an increasingly common and effective treatment for back pain, neck pain and headaches eliminating the need for drugs or surgery. This means chiropractic care can also be very cost effective in comparison to other types of treatment. According to Dr Adam, “helping patients make positive changes with respect to nutrition, exercise and wellness is also fundamental to maintaining normal spinal function”. “Adopting healthy habits today, such as improving

postural fitness, can significantly reduce the risk of injury or pain in later years, positively impacting on our self-esteem, social relationships and mental health.” During Spinal Health Week 2015 make an appointment at Life Enhancing Chiropractic for a spinal health check-up and discover what steps

you can take to improve your health and wellbeing and Get Your Happy Back. You can also visit www.spinalhealthweek. com.au to learn more about chiropractic care and Spinal Health Week 2015. For further information on Spinal Health Week 2015, or chiropractic care please contact: Life Enhancing

Chiropractic on 5472 0808. Spinal Health Week 2015 is a national initiative of the Chiropractors’ Association Australia (CAA). Dr Adam Roache is a member of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia. Phone 5472 0808.

Strength training for women A BROWSE through a magazine, newspaper or your Facebook feed will no doubt expose you to a variety of health and fitness messages. From the latest diets with buzz words like “clean eating” to the latest exercise craze, we are continually bombarded with messages about how to have that toned body. One benefit of this exposure is that women are becoming more open to strength training. So what are the benefits of strength training for women: 1. Strength training can assist with weight loss Muscles use more energy than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more energy your body burns

through the day. Combined with a healthy diet, this will lead to increased metabolism and weight loss. With increased weight training, your body starts to store energy in a way that is easier to access and use. 2. Weight training in women can significanly reduce the chance of developing osteoporosis as resistance training improves your bone density. 3. Your body will become more toned but not bulkier 4. You will reduce your risk of developing many medical conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure. 5. Muscles support joints and help to lessen the burden on your joints, so strong muscles will help to support the joints which is especially important if you have osteoarthritis. 6. Prevent degenerative conditions - many injuries we see in the clinic may have been prevented by regular, safe exercise. A combination of appropriate strength training and stretching is a great recipe for injury prevention. Why undertake Strength Training with a Physiotherapist??? Physio’s have years of training to understand the human body and more specifically movement patterns, injury management and prevention and biomechanics. This ensures

that we can provide you with a safe exercise program or help you to recover from injury. Women, especially mothers, have additional special needs in terms of strength training which are often overlooked. Women who have had children or who have symptoms of pelvic floor weakness, need to modify some exercises to prevent adverse issues of incontinence or prolapse. A physiotherapist who has additional experience in pelvic floor safe exercise can give you the peace of mind of knowing that your exercise program is safe and effective. At Hinteractive Physio, we offer a variety of classes to improve muscle strength, balance, core strength and flexibility. All of our physiotherapists have also undertaken additional study in either Human Movement or Exercise Science. If you would like more information on how to start seeing the benefits of strength training for yourself, please contact our clinic today on 5442 5556 or visit our website ( w w w. h i n t e r a c t i v e physio.com.au). As our classes are conducted by physiotherapists to address particular musculoskeletal issues, health fund rebates can apply. Rebecca Steele Physiotherapist and Owner - Hinteractive Physio

health Am I too old to exercise? IF you’ve ever thought you aren’t standing as straight and tall as you once did, find walking up a flight of stairs to be a strain at times or you groan when reaching for the arms of a chair as you slowly get up from sitting, you aren’t alone. “We don’t stop exercising because we get old, we get old because we stop exercising,” says Lee Smith from Make a Difference Health and Fitness, “This is one of the key ideas behind our ‘At Your Pace’ Fitness classes”. Older adults hurt themselves more through inactivity than through activity. Our strength, flexibility, balance and endurance wither when we don’t exercise. Exercise will enable you to fully engage in life - adding years to your life and life to your years! With the At Your Pace fitness classes, each set of exercises are specifically designed to be able to be completed at differing levels of difficulty. With this unique method, anyone from any fitness level will benefit from the class. With definitive research demonstrating that activity helps forestall cognitive decline (dementia) and that being fit keeps people healthier longer, it’s no wonder that more of our aged population are signing up for personal trainers, group exercise classes, boot camps, and walking groups. Maintaining at least moderate activity is a key component in a positive health regimen. This will combat or prevent weight-related diseases, heart disease, anatomical and structural impairments, hypertension, osteoporosis, cholesterol, Alzheimer ’s, sexual performance issues, loss of muscle mass and decreased sociability. To prevent normal biological changes caused by aging, seek kinder, gentler workouts; slower and longer warmups and cool-downs; and exercise routines that emphasise diminished risk of injury while promoting posture, strength, endurance, flexibility, agility and balance. At Your Pace classes offer all of these aspects in a fun 1hr class. There are several types of exercise that are important – cardio, strength training, flexibility training, balance training and core training. Cardio is moderately intense aerobic activity such as walking, swimming, using a treadmill or elliptical trainer and biking. Strength training is exercises that are designed to increase muscular strength and endurance including resistance training with machines or free weights. Flexibility training involves stretching and range of motion exercises. Balance training helps with stability and involves exercises such as backward and sideways walking, heel and toe walking or using a workout ball or balance pad. And core training is exercises that strengthen your abs and other muscles that stabilize the spine and pelvis and run the entire length of the torso. We incorporate each of theses five key areas into the At Your Pace classes again with the flexibility to work at a level that is comfortable and safe for your level of fitness and flexibility. So the answer to am I too old to exercise is No! It might seem overwhelming but there are lots of options available and help is on hand. So get on your way to a younger and healthier you by giving Lee Smith a call at Make a Difference Health and Fitness on 5442 6179 or visit their website on www.madhf.com.au. At Your Pace classes are held at the CWA Hall, Maple St, Cooroy on Wednesdays at 1.30pm. Please call to book your spot as places are limited.

Sunshine Coast performing arts community rallies for a cause THE Sunshine Coast performing arts community is rallying for an important conservation cause on Saturday 13 June 2015, with two of our region’s rising stars – Sam Shepherd and Dear Willow presenting a community concert in support of Queensland Koala Crusaders Inc. Koalas are an iconic species, but are at risk of localised extinction on the Sunshine Coast, which was once a stronghold for them. Community support is needed to create awareness of the threats to the koala, to activate local koala conservation initiatives and promote education about our unique fauna more broadly. Sam is a Maleny resident, and was honoured as a finalist in the prestigious international ‘Six String Theory’ guitar competition in 2014. It is one of the biggest guitar competitions in the world – founded by legendary guitarist Lee Ritenour - with thousands of entries from 48 different countries. Sam was the only Australian to make the finals. He has also been a top 5 finalist in the Tamworth Golden Guitar awards. “Dear Willow” is the alter ego of Sunshine Coast singer/song-writer EmJ Dau. Her original songs stem from poetic lyrics and melodies with both depth and strong ‘singalong’ hooks. Her single “Father’s House” was released in April 2015 and supported by an acoustic tour

SATURDAY 11th April, 2015 saw a small gathering of family and friends celebrating the 60th Wedding Anniversary of Raymond and Patricia Britten (nee Hetherington) at a mock wedding reception afternoon tea in their home. The couple find it hard to believe that 60 years have passed since professing their love, commitment and mutual respect for each other. A love of dancing, outings with friends and family and a trip with mates all poured into two Morris ‘Z’ utes (no seatbelts in those days to hinder numbers) to Brisbane in March 1954 to see Queen Elizabeth on her Queensland tour finally cemented their decision to marry. Although Patricia admits that Raymond cut a striking figure in his National fitness instructor uniform showing off ‘those legs’. For Raymond it was Patricia’s caring ways and they just ‘clicked’. Even though a tornado coming off the 1955 Bundaberg cyclone hit Yandina on the 27th March, the nuptials of the young couple went ahead on Easter Saturday the 9th April. The community rallied for one of their own and all hands were on deck to right the Methodist Church back on its ‘foundational stumps’ and try and patch the holes in the organ. The groom had even salvaged frangipani from behind the butcher shop and post office so the bride could have some in her bouquet. Corn bags thrown over the mud allowed the bride, in her beautiful gown, to enter without incident. After honeymooning in Sydney they settled

in Cooroy. Raymond volunteered with the local fire brigade and has recently ‘retired ‘from the Red Cross after 186 life saving donations. After 24 years with Cooroy SEA it was necessary to relocate to Tewantin to the new name SEQEB Noosaville depot, but shortly before his retiring after 40 years 3mths with the company they resettled back home in Cooroy. Patricia, who nursed at both the Cooroy and Nambour Hospitals before their marriage, has devoted her time caring for Raymond and to get him out to those many ‘unearthly hour’ call outs with the dedicated team to restore power to the community in all kinds of weather. They have raised their children Colleen (Fuller) and Kim, and have dedicated themselves to care for them, their six grandchildren and now two great-grand children when needed. They enjoy many happy memories of taking their children on holidays up and with friends. They always made time to attend the many balls and dances, particularly in Cooroy. Their love of dancing has given them hours of enjoyment and time together sharing a common interest. Patricia’s love of tennis and musical Theatre participation bring many happy memories. Besides having interests that bring enjoyment, and working together to make a home, their advice to others - “always talk things through,” Ray said, “And don’t give up’ Patricia added. We’ve had our arguments but we don’t pack up our ports and head for the hills’. Sadly that seems to be the way for too many young people these days. Marriage is about taking the good with the bad”.

Business Involvement Welcome in the King of the Mountain Festival by Debra Palmen The King of the Mountain Festival has been held in the hinterland town of Pomona for 37 years, and has enjoyed the support and sponsorship of a variety of local and major businesses during that time. The premier event of the Festival, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, sees Australian and international competitors race at top speed to the summit of 438m Mt Cooroora, and back down again at an even faster rate. It’s a difficult and dangerous race, but it never fails to attract the fit, the strong and the brave - of whom only 100 are selected to race. In addition to the Mountain Challenge, the Festival includes a variety of other races for all ages and abilities. For those not competing, a Heritage Market, good quality antiques fair, car show, side-show alley, skate board competition, petting zoo for the little ones, and lots of food ensures there is something for everyone. The King of the Mountain Festival will be held on Sunday, 26 July. Despite the sudden loss of the Festival’s primary sponsor, planning is well underway for a memorable event. Festival Chair, Heather Manders, said “The King of the Mountain Festival is one of the projects the Lions Club is most proud of. It has thrived due to the generosity of major and local business sponsors, and of course the commitment of our volunteers and the

Pomona community.” Asked why Wimmers, last year’s major sponsor, had this year withdrawn its sponsorship at the last minute, Ms Manders was philosophical. “The Festival is run by the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club” she explained “which is a not-for-profit, volunteerrun organisation dedicated to serving and supporting the local community. Although there was a strong push to create a much larger, multi-day affair staged by an event management company, our feedback is that yet another big, brassy professional event isn’t what our community wants. People sometimes enjoy a slower pace and the sense of belonging that comes from attending small-town Festivals that are about participation and fun, and not just about making money.” Having said that, fundraising is an important part of the day, as the Lions support a wide range of charities, from an emergency accommodation centre in Nambour through to childhood cancer research, drought appeals, a number of school programs and lots more. Ms Manders noted that the Festival is in good hands because of the generosity of its sponsors and added that the Bendigo Bank was of particularly noteworthy because of its continued support as the sponsor of the International Mountain Challenge. Ms Manders said, “We have a great team involved in this year’s Festival, but we are always looking for more volunteers and helpers. And businesses of all sizes are invited to

Competitor Profile: Norm Harwood WHEN you think of competing in the Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge, hauling yourself up Mt Cooroora and hurtling back down at high speed, you think of fit, young and tough athletes. You don’t, to be frank, think of 62 year olds. But Norm Harwood isn’t any old 62 year old. In 2015 Norm will be competing in the Mountain Challenge for a record 25th time. How does he do it? He’s sanguine about his achievement – “I’ll start training about eight weeks out” he says. His training includes swimming, boxing and cycling, but categorically does not include running up and down Mt Cooroora any sooner than he has to. Norm has made the trek to the top of the mountain 26 times – on 24 occasions racing in the Mountain Challenge, once with a film crew while being interviewed for the television programme Queensland Weekender, and once to renew his vows for his 25th wedding anniversary. It’s not many men who are game enough to suggest to their wives that they should clamber to the top of a steep mountain to renew their

Norm Harwood, wearing part of his race history on his arm - the rest of his 25 years of racing will be inked onto his arm later this year. wedding vows, but Stef Harwood isn’t any old wife. Stef had been a runner for years and competed in five Mountain Challenges herself, so she wasn’t daunted by the prospect. Even the friends and family invited to witness the vows made it to the top without cardiac arrest. Only the celebrant needed to undertake some training, but 12 weeks later he was ready. Then, at the top of the mountain, on a glorious blue and sparkling day, the group looked out towards Noosa while Norm and Stef held hands and renewed their vows of love and fidelity. Norm recalls it as a beautiful moment, and was so happy he and Stef picked that spot to share

with their friends and family. What he didn’t realise was that years later he would still have such a strong connection with the mountain, via the Mountain Challenge. Norm might not win the Mountain Challenge this year, but he’s now a part of the mountain’s history and it will always hold a special place in his heart. And you never know, when the 2016 race rolls around, you might just see Norm Harwood at the starting line yet again.

Railway line disappears RAILWAY tracks are being ripped up in Imbil as contractors return the once busy Imbil-Brooloo line to a graded path. For property owners along the line, questions of liability and inquiry include “what happens to my stock”, “am I liable for people accessing my dam” and “is there a rail trail being planned”. The rail corridor is owned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads which says grazing access will continue while future plans are being finalised. The old railway line, disused for many years, dissects paddocks where livestock roam. Some of these paddocks contain water storage. One concerned resident said fences designed to keep stock out do not stop people from swimming in dams, and she is worried about her responsibilities if the old line becomes a popular walking or horse trail. While development of a rail trail is on the cards, and has been for a while, there are two steps that need to be addressed before that can happen. Firstly, the Rattler Railway Company – the new rail safety operator managing the Valley Rattler steam train – needs to sign over the lease for the railway land between Imbil and Brooloo to Gympie Regional Council. The land is leased from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Once Gympie Regional Council assumes control of the lease, the second step is its commitment to fund and manage the rail trail project. The new lease arrangements have stalled

as the Rattler Railway Company chases $2 million in funding promised to it by the previous Queensland Government. In the meantime, about five kilometres of railway track is being dismantled, sleepers are being bulldozed and vegetation cleared along the line between Imbil and Brooloo, under a contract commissioned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Once the tracks are removed, the council has indicated it would prefer the corridor become a horse riding trail, which it would manage. While discussions with council on this proposal are pending, adjoining property owners will still be able to use the corridor for grazing.” According to Rail Trails Australia, there are many such tracks around the country and throughout the world, where you can walk, cycle or horse ride on shared-use paths recycled from abandoned railway corridors. Development of a trail in Imbil would come under Gympie Region Council’s tracks and trails policy. As well, there is a recent suggestion to site a railway museum at the old Imbil station, bringing rolling stock from Gympie to Imbil and to develop a static display. The Rattler Railway Company will soon meet with the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce to discuss the proposal, according to director Gaylene Smith. Both the trail and museum promise tourism dollars for Mary Valley Country, but they are yet to be firmed into approved projects. A response from Gympie Regional Council was unavailable at the time of printing.

pomona Talk Tourism at Mary Valley forum THE tourism future of the Mary Valley will be boosted when it comes under the spotlight on June 3 and everyone is invited to participate because “tourism is everyone’s business”, the organisers say. Mary Valley Inc manages the Mary Valley Country tourism marketing campaign, and has teamed with the Mary Valley and Kenilworth chambers of commerce, Gympie Regional Council and Destination Gympie Region to present the tourism forum. MVI president Julie Worth said the three-part forum would kick off at 3pm at the Kandanga Country Club with a snapshot of current tourism initiatives in the region. This would be followed by hot food and networking, with a facilitated workshop as the final session of the day, finishing at 8pm. The aim is to highlight what already exists in the region, identify opportunities for growth and tourism, and then brainstorm ideas on how to continue the advancement of the Mary Valley as a “must-see” destination. “Thousands of people every year used to discover the Mary Valley on the back of an iron horse, the Rattler steam train. This forum will brainstorm ideas to increase the tourists to the valley, to exemplify different activities available and match them with accommodation and dining experiences. Mrs Worth wants people to bring ideas and innovations to build on the already successful Mary Valley Country brand. She wants to build on great tools, like the e-book which can be downloaded from the Mary Valley Country website to your phone so that even without reception, you can “come out to play” in the Mary Valley. This tourism forum is your opportunity to work in collaboration with other businesses and groups to enhance promotions for the valley . Bookings are essential. The forum costs $15 each and you can RSVP to celebrate@themaryvalley.com.au or phone 5484 3500.

Bed: 5; Bath: 3; Car 2 Less than three kilometres on sealed road to the railway platform in downtown Cooroy and a scenic fifteen minute drive from Noosa finds you in this wonderful botanical garden. The gently sloping one hectare (approx. 2.5 acres) bordered by a pretty tree lined creek enjoys a long frontage to the road and an idyllic northern aspect over the majority of the grounds. Sitting on the highest part of the land, a short drive meets an automatic gate and lock up garage to the main house, while a separate driveway runs to a carport alongside the second house. A pebble courtyard spans the

main entry and border gardens serve to connect and separate the neighbouring timber framed cottage. With timber floors revealed, fresh paint and some maintenance, the two bedroom cottage is ready to suit whatever purpose you have. In the main house, face brick construction and sturdy hardwood floors connect to a wrap around terrace off the living room and a nicely updated stone bench top island kitchen has a Smeg five burner gas/ electric stainless oven. Otherwise presented in original order, there are three bedrooms with built in cupboards and bathroom in one wing and internal stairs to the garage and open storage. A cement slab continues under the house to provide great extra space and an ideal cellar for the wine collection. An adjustable louvre roof over the terrace adjoins a barbecue station. The gardens encourage walks under leafy arbors, a pair of magnificent Jacaranda trees a lofty canopy over mango, citrus and a profusion of tropical trees and shrubs. Slide the post and rail gate and a charming stand alone timber building with water

connected is sure to appeal to artists and home hobbyists. The property keeps giving as you make your way (in company of a very friendly resident duck) to a large open paddock and set of stables. A clear spring from the foothills of Mt Cooroy delivers fresh water. Garden lovers will marvel at the mighty Mexican tree fern and a picture perfect fig down by the creek. There is enormous scope to improve the homes and outbuildings to suit a myriad of residential applications. What a fantastic opportunity to put your stamp on an intrinsically beautiful slice of the Noosa Hinterland. Features: 1.01 hectares(app2.5acres), rainwater storage, boundary creek, pond(resident duck), 2 houses/separate power meters, air-conditioning, automatic gate, plenty of under house storage, security screens, lock up garage, separate studio, stables, park like grounds, east of highway, 3 minute drive into Cooroy and 15 into Noosa. Price: Offers over $720,000. Contact Kess Prior 0404 344 3099 at Hinternoosa.com.au 5447 7000.

Lovingly restored and beautifully presented, this four-bedroom Queenslander offers a welcoming home, where buyers can own their own slice of Queensland history. Built in Cleveland in 1908, and moved about 20 years ago, the house has much of its original charm, from the traditional heritage paintwork and butterfly staircase outside, to the original polished timber floors inside. Tongue-in groove (or VJ) walls with dado rails; casement windows; ornate fretwork; French doors; high ceilings and a Victorian fireplace add to the historic appeal. Rewired in 1995, and recently repainted, maintenance on the residence is impeccable. Abundant space is on offer in the kitchen, with ample storage, large benches and a 900mm oven with gas cooktop and suspended exhaust. Large verandas wrap around three

sides, with French doors opening from the dining and lounge rooms, as well as the three bedrooms. Two rooms set under the front veranda overlook the garden and could be ideal as a home office or guest accommodation. The property has a double lock-up garage and covered carport, plus an additional shed providing ample storage. Established bushland borders the three-acre property creating a secluded oasis, with a creek, permanent waterhole, cook run with feed shed and fish-stocked dam. Those who embrace living off the land will appreciate the vegetable gardens and citrus orchard; plus custard apples, persimmons, loquats, macadamias and bananas. Cooroy’s CBD is just a short, threeminute drive away, with its mix of retail, dining and services. Pirates in pink to celebrate women’s league

SAM Cameron-Hands competed at the Australian Titles on the Gold coast earlier this month representing Qld. Sam was drawn through to a semi final against Rowen Rafferty from NSW. In a hard fought battle Sam was awarded the victory. He was then through to the final against the most skilful opponent he has had to face in Bradley Abraham from W.A. Abraham represented Australia in last year’s World Junior Games. With a tactical and well executed plan Sam was awarded the win via a unanimous decision. “Sam just fought the best

Mandy Dwyer, Nikki Britten and Amber Flett celebrate with Noosa Pirates’ Ian Hardcastle and Bendigo Bank’s Geoff Edwards THE smell of liniment is in the air again, workplace tipping competitions are intensifying and the temperature is starting to drop. All that means the footy season has everyone excited – clubs, players, supporters and even the sponsors. So it is with our Noosa Pirates, who turned some heads as they celebrated the Women in League round on 16 May at the Cooroy Sports Complex. Club President, Ian Hardcastle said the Junior Pirates of all age groups took pride in playing in front of a great home crowd. “Everyone was excited to be part of celebrating Women in League. There are so many amazing lady volunteers in our great club, and many took advantage of the opportunity to wear pink to celebrate all the mums, sisters, aunties, grandmas and friends who contribute to our wonderful game of rugby league,” Ian said. “Geoff Edwards from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank was on hand to cheer the kids on, and the Pirates certainly thank Geoff for all the support he and his team have given the Pirates this year. We look forward to a long and enjoyable relationship with them,” Ian added. Sadly, the tutus, wigs and great photo opportunities have been packed away for another year, but the message isn’t lost - thanks for all you do for our sport and our community, ladies!

fight of his career against the most highly rated opponent that he has ever faced. He boxed calmly and calculated to dominate the bout. I couldn’t be happier with his performance. We will now wait to hear from the Australian selectors to see whether or not he makes the team to represent Australia in Russia in September,” Coach Mark Evans said. In other news the Impact Boxing crew travelled to Bundaberg recently to compete in the Wide Bay Titles. Sam Cameron-Hands, Ben Cameron-Hands and Byron Mckeown all won convincingly in their respective divisions to gain their Titles. Kaydon Mercieca fought an absolute war but unfortunately lost a split points decision. “The boys all fought awesome tonight, they are continuing to improve all the time,” coach Mark Evans said. The Impact crew will travel to Cairns this weekend to compete.
