The embodiment of dreams and nightmares THE 2014 Australian Body Art Carnivale saw around 100 competitors embrace this year’s theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. The colourful community arts event again drew thousands of spectators to watch some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers create and parade their masterpieces. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged. “Some artists focused on dreams, other on nightmares, and many intertwined the two – showing the duality between good and evil, beauty and horror”. “We saw works that featured spiders, grotesque gore, sci-fi horror and monsters as well as angels, rainbow sprites, goddesses and knights in shining armour,” says Danielle. Danielle highlighted what a great weekend the event is for art-loving members of the public. “It truly is phenomenal to watch the artists come together from near and far to create something special,” she said. “The artists were under pressure to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competitions, yet all had smiles on their faces and really seemed to enjoy themselves and celebrate the opportunity to work alongside fellow artists,” Danielle said. “The support for novice competitors, including two 13 year old artists in the Face Painting Competition, was particularly great to see, with more experienced artists really encouraging the new competitors throughout the day.” • See winners on Page 2

A quieter future for Cooroy Spring Water Peter Lavin, new owner of Cooroy Spring Water bottling plant, has advised the council the company wants to significantly reduce the operation to just 2 to 3 days per week, with only 3 or 4 staff at most times and Noosa Council has agreed to the scale back that will mean a significant reduction in traffic that’s caused more than a decade of complaints from local residents. Council has agreed to restricting truck movements to 8 a day, between 6am and 6pm only on weekdays, and no B-double trucks will be allowed. A maximum of 12 staff, including drivers, will be allowed on the premises and only during those weekday operating hours. Mr Lavin said the company will distribute bottled water, but will no longer be involved in the office water cooler business. Mayor Noel Playford said he was pleased that a significant Cooroy

business would have a future, but with considerably less impact on residents in the area. The bottling plant began its life as a small, home-based business in 1991, but over time it expanded significantly, with on-site bottling and packaging of water from three bores employing up to 60 people in peak periods. The expansion by the previous owners led to a long history of complaints from Cooroy residents before the company went into receivership in 2011. Mr Lavin will also be introducing a premium bottled spring water - Noosa Natural Spring Water (including flavoured varieties) to take advantage of Noosa’s iconic name. The new conditions for the reduced operation are still to be ratified in the Planning and Environment Court.
