The embodiment of dreams and nightmares THE 2014 Australian Body Art Carnivale saw around 100 competitors embrace this year’s theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. The colourful community arts event again drew thousands of spectators to watch some of the nation’s best body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers create and parade their masterpieces. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ drew a wide range of interpretations across all competition categories and some truly incredible art emerged. “Some artists focused on dreams, other on nightmares, and many intertwined the two – showing the duality between good and evil, beauty and horror”. “We saw works that featured spiders, grotesque gore, sci-fi horror and monsters as well as angels, rainbow sprites, goddesses and knights in shining armour,” says Danielle. Danielle highlighted what a great weekend the event is for art-loving members of the public. “It truly is phenomenal to watch the artists come together from near and far to create something special,” she said. “The artists were under pressure to create their masterpieces within the defined time limits of the competitions, yet all had smiles on their faces and really seemed to enjoy themselves and celebrate the opportunity to work alongside fellow artists,” Danielle said. “The support for novice competitors, including two 13 year old artists in the Face Painting Competition, was particularly great to see, with more experienced artists really encouraging the new competitors throughout the day.” • See winners on Page 2

A quieter future for Cooroy Spring Water Peter Lavin, new owner of Cooroy Spring Water bottling plant, has advised the council the company wants to significantly reduce the operation to just 2 to 3 days per week, with only 3 or 4 staff at most times and Noosa Council has agreed to the scale back that will mean a significant reduction in traffic that’s caused more than a decade of complaints from local residents. Council has agreed to restricting truck movements to 8 a day, between 6am and 6pm only on weekdays, and no B-double trucks will be allowed. A maximum of 12 staff, including drivers, will be allowed on the premises and only during those weekday operating hours. Mr Lavin said the company will distribute bottled water, but will no longer be involved in the office water cooler business. Mayor Noel Playford said he was pleased that a significant Cooroy

business would have a future, but with considerably less impact on residents in the area. The bottling plant began its life as a small, home-based business in 1991, but over time it expanded significantly, with on-site bottling and packaging of water from three bores employing up to 60 people in peak periods. The expansion by the previous owners led to a long history of complaints from Cooroy residents before the company went into receivership in 2011. Mr Lavin will also be introducing a premium bottled spring water - Noosa Natural Spring Water (including flavoured varieties) to take advantage of Noosa’s iconic name. The new conditions for the reduced operation are still to be ratified in the Planning and Environment Court.

When I was young, budget time was filled with anticipation, No one tried to guess what was ahead in the presentation, If any information became public, the Treasurer was deemed at fault. And on occasions he was dismissed, his career reaching an inglorious halt, Now it’s discussed for weeks, before it hits the floor, Totally scaring everyone, especially the vulnerable poor. (I did not observe in all the changes that the Treasurer brought, There are few realistic changes to members’ perks, and no sign of cuts to sport) We have to be sorry for the pollies, struggling on their frozen pay, But I suspect that next year, they’ll get a fat rise, back dated in the usual way. Former Treasurers and Prime Ministers, join in, they like to tag along, They love to boast, and smugly tell us, they never got things wrong. This Treasurer, as always, will gladly inform us, again and again, and again, The previous Government left such a mess, they caused us all this pain The Prime Minister cunningly has enraged all the Premiers now, Cutting their Health and Education money, which should cause an unholy row. The reason is politically obvious, and fairly plain to see, He’s got in mind an excuse to broaden, or increase the dear old GST. The media, of course, is saturated, and having an absolute ball, There’s nothing they like better, than a political brawl. The arguments and opinions, are really too much to handle, Together with the murders, the corruption, and the usual sporting scandal. The politicians seem at a loss, on what they want to do, The citizens just get on with the job, they’re totally confused too. It’s the politicians, not the country, that are in such disarray, If they just sorted themselves out, things would be okay. This wonderful country has great promise, and deserves much better care, But our Governments and regulators, are the crosses we have to bear …

Grass roots markets a hit in Cooroy COOROY Grass Roots Market has been developed by a local family for families and local small business. The idea of having a ‘Grass Roots’ market is to establish a community based market full of Homemade, Organic, Fresh, Recycled, Original, Natural & Local Stalls. “We are a local family (Michael, Jessica & baby Violet) who love markets! We love the atmosphere. We love the fresh air. We love the talent on display. Markets are great because you get to meet the person behind the product. Our markets are fun, interactive, lively and a good alternative to shopping centres. Markets are also a good way for communities to grow and develop, and for new, young or old, sometimes raw talent to get a

start with the product they are passionate about. “We support and provided free of charge spots at our market for fundraising and also local musicians or music students from local schools wanting to busk or perform to get themselves seen by the local community. “Big thank you to Cooroy RSL for their support and opportunity to get this beautiful little market up and running for everyone to enjoy.” Every Sunday from 8am - 1pm, get along to the Cooroy Grass Roots Market at the Memorial Hall, grab your hot morning organic coffee, enjoy morning tea at the organic cafe, browse the bright and beautiful market stalls on offer and get your fruit/Veg too!

A call for help to stop the northern spread of one of bananas’ worst diseases

THE support of residents is being sought to stop the spread northwards of Banana Bunchy Top, one of the worst diseases in the world to affect banana plants.

According to National Bunchy Top Project Inspector, Ms Samantha Stringer, this local area is one of the most critical areas in the fight against Bunchy Top in Australia.

“The Bunchy Top virus has the potential to wipe out the Australian banana industry to the north as well as stop people from having healthy home grown bananas. We have found

it recently in several backyards in the Tinbeerwah area between Cooroy and Noosa.” “This is right on the northernmost boundary of the infected area, which stretches all the way south to northern New South Wales. At the moment, we are inspecting in the area and hope that residents will support us in our search for infected plants.” The virus is carried by aphids blown in the wind after feeding on infected plants and by transplanted suckers. So any infected plants pose the risk of spreading the disease further. The virus stunts the growth of leaves and an infected plant will not produce a healthy bunch of bananas. “Apart from helping us to control the disease from spreading northwards, we would ask people not to share any

suckers with friends or family and remind people that you must obtain a permit from Queensland Department Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry to move banana plants or planting material,” Ms Stringer said. The legislation was put in place to protect banana growers’ livelihoods and home grown bananas from the spread of Bunchy Top. “It is also important that people don’t destroy plants if they think they are diseased as they could unknowingly spread the disease further – we will inspect and destroy any infected plants free of charge,” Ms Stringer said. Residents who think their banana plants might have Bunchy Top are advised to go to www.bunchytop.org.au for more information or call the Hotline 1800 068 371.

Noosa loved the free ride

Have you got your party feet ready for this festive season???

Talk to the Experts

THE numbers are in, and there’s no doubt Noosa’s Free Holiday Buses over the Easter break were a runaway success. Better still, there’s evidence the initiative helped to get cars off the road and reduce congestion during one of Noosa’s busiest holiday periods. A record number of around 33,000 passenger trips were recorded on the free buses which ran for 8 days over the

Easter break. Patronage more than tripled on the five local TransLink services; from 4,358 passenger trips last year when no free services were offered, to 13,738 passenger trips over the same period this year. The free services included TransLink routes 626 – 629 & 632, additional routes 064 & 065, and Council’s Boreen Point to Tewantin Flexilink and Council Cabs services. Council’s Director of

Planning and Infrastructure, Martin Drydale, said he is delighted with the increase in public transport usage. “It was pleasing to see that 40% of passengers surveyed said that if the buses were not free, they would have used a private vehicle instead. This indicates that the Free Holiday Buses program contributed to reducing congestion,” Mr Drydale said. “A 97% satisfaction rate from survey re-

spondents regarding their trip also tells us we’re heading in the right direction,” Mr Drydale said. Survey results showed that 40% of locals said they would use public transport more in the future as a result of the program and 19% said that while they rarely catch a bus at other times, this Easter they left the car behind and caught a bus instead. The Free Holiday

Buses are funded by Noosa Council’s Public Transport levy, and delivered in partnership with TransLink. The program aims to reduce traffic congestion in the Noosa region and encourage people to give public transport a go. For all public transport enquiries visit translink.com.au or call TransLink on 13 12 30 anytime - and remember that using a go card can save you 30% off your journey.

news Sandy Bolton gets more than a burnt sausage in Kin Kin!

COOROY RAG

Kin Kin State School held their annual Mother’s Day Lunch where Councillor Sandy Bolton was their special guest and she was most impressed. Her children went to the school 20 years ago and the last time she ate there all she got was a burnt sausage! The school is part of the Stephanie Alexander Foundation where the children grow, pick and cook the produce from their own garden. This time round the children cooked a 3 course gourmet meal including homemade flat bread with pesto and beetroot chutney, vege lasagne, chickpea curry and apple crumble. Kin Kin State School has come a long way in 20 years where the children are learning real life skills and can easily do fractions because they are used in a practical way. The school also has chickens, pigs and some students ride their horses to school. The Kin Kin Community enjoyed having Cr Sandy Bolton as guest of honour for the luncheon.

Celebrating ‘Chappy’ Week CHAPPY Week is here. So what’s the work of a “Chappy” is all about? Shane Brigg is the school Chaplain at Noosa District State High School. Shane has extensive Chaplaincy experience (18+ years) and has been very engaged in a wide range of services for young people and communities for many years. “Chappy” Shane loves the outdoors and may often be found taking a hike in the bush, canoeing, or spending time at the beach. Time with his family is important too. Shane is married to Rachel and they have two children Matthew (18) and Natalie (15). Their family is extended at present with Jasmin - a student on exchange from Korea - staying with them for the entire year. Together they enjoy games, watching movies, outings and involvement in their missional community (Church) at the Uni Sunshine Coast. Shane also loves creative pursuits like painting, sketching, listening to music, and writing stories (one day he’d like to see published). “Chappy” Shane supports the wider school community in a range of ways, such as helping school counsellors and staff in offering welfare services and support in cases of bereavement, family breakdown or other crisis and loss situations. This includes providing support for staff and parents in our school community and also assisting students in exploring their spirituality and providing guidance on values and ethical matters. Chappy Shane also runs fun, positive activities for young people, both in and out of school, to foster a supportive, caring school community. This includes support for “at risk” students, support for staff and families throughout the wider school community and support and direction for all who may request it. These positive relationships help young people and their families to face issues, by providing hope, connection, meaning and purpose. Chaplains are in the prevention and support business: helping students, families and the wider school community find a way to deal with life issues, and challenges, and encouraging creative expressions of life choices. Chaplains provide spiritual and emotional support, Pastoral Care, and creative connections for all students and staff irrespective of their

religious beliefs. They provide a service for people facing life challenges, those who just need a listening ear, a caring presence, and a message of hope. Chaplaincy at Noosa District SHS hosts a Breakfast program (with community volunteers) (each Wednesday Morning before school at Cooroy campus, and Tuesday Morning at Pomona campus). Several specialised support groups including “GIFT”, “Bella” and “LOT” for girls (year 8, 9, 10, 11 girls) that encourage positive life choices and empower young leaders; Boys groups including “RISK” are conducted with volunteer facilitators from community groups. Chappy Shane also helps with the Duke of Edinburgh programs within our school and other activities as a ‘helping hand’. One of Chappy Shane’s key motivations is seeing students empowered to become positive peer leaders and equipped to make an effective caring difference in the school and community. School chaplaincy is unique: • As part of NDSHS Student Services team, Chaplaincy is a support conduit – connecting students (and school staff) to specialist services in the community such as welfare groups, counselling services, medical services and community groups in consultation with the Student Services team and School Principals. • Chaplains build relationships with students (and staff). They are a trusted adult in the playground and in the classroom – offering a listening ear to students who want to share their problems and experiences. • A Chaplain’s role contributes to the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of the school community. • They are seen by students as an adult who is not a part of the school’s authority structure, and so is accessible to talk through tough issues. Chaplains receive their remuneration through some government funding (approx. 2 days per week) and through the generous financial donations by individuals, businesses, local churches and the school P&C committee. Chappy Shane provides a chaplaincy service at both the Cooroy and Pomona Campuses 5 days a week.

TAKE charge of your financesrom 1 July, the Australian Taxation Office will provide an online and substantially pre-prepared tax return for people without complex tax affairs says Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss. “For many people in Wide Bay, the Government’s new MyTax program will reduce the preparation time for an income tax return, where people need only review or change prefilled information before lodging their return,” Mr Truss said. “The ATO will use tax returns provided by organisations such as banks and employers to prefill some areas. The new service is also fully online, rather than requiring download and installation of software and is available on mobile devices.” Taxpayers can use MyTax if: • they were an Australian resident for the financial year; • they have income only from salary, wages, allowances, bank interest, dividends and/or Australian government payments; • their only deductions are for work-related expenses, expenses related to interest or dividend income, donations and/or the costs of managing their tax affairs; and • the only offsets they want to claim are the senior and pensioner tax offset and/or zone and overseas forces tax offset. Taxpayers will receive an SMS or email from the ATO advising if MyTax may be right for them. For a full list of eligibility criteria go to www.ato.gov.au or telephone the ATO on 13 28 61.

Take charge of your finances Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy MANAGING your day-to-day finances is a challenge and we all know that life can be unpredictable. As a general rule, it’s almost always better to use any spare cash you’ve got to pay down debt. This rule is even truer when it’s a mortgage for your own home or a credit card or personal loan. This type of debt isn’t tax-deductible and what this means is that any other investment (savings account, managed funds, share market etc) has to do substantially better than the interest rate on your mortgage to be a better deal. Say your interest rate on your mortgage is 7% and your effective tax rate is 25%, then you’d need to get in excess of 9.3% on the investment for that to be a better option than paying the cash into your mortgage.

There may be investments where you’re sure about getting 9.3% or better but is there any risk? There is no risk in paying down debt. Credit card interest rates typically go from 12.5% upwards, so credit card debt can be a little on the expensive side. Are you using your credit card sensibly? Too many of us don’t and in fact leave large balances unpaid on our cards. If you’ve got a debt that’s crept away from you, one option is to look at balance-transfer credit cards. A balance-transfer card allows you to take the balance from one card, move it to a new

card, and get a “honeymoon” low rate on that balance for a period of time. It’s a good way to start afresh, but you need to have a plan to get the debt under control, and not just run up a new debt on the new card. You still need to pay the debt off, and if you don’t, there will come a point where you’re facing a much higher interest rate. To talk more about budgeting or any other banking matter, please call into the branch or call me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigo adelaide.com.au.

news

COOROY RAG WITH several recent parties held around Cooroy I thought it timely to give advice to the general community in regards to their rights and responsibilities with hosting or being otherwise involved in the organising of a party. New laws have come into effect for anyone who organises or is involved in an event/party that becomes outof-control. Police now have greater powers to deal with unruly parties and events, and the power to prosecute irresponsible party and event organisers What is an ‘out-of-control event’? Firstly, the event must involve a gathering of at least 12 people with at least three engaging in out-of-control conduct. Out of control conduct includes things like trespassing, damaging property, disorderly conduct, fighting, doing obscene acts, making unreasonable noise, throwing objects to harm people, obstructing traffic, being drunk in a public place or breaking glass. Additionally, the out-of-control conduct must cause, or be likely to cause, someone at or near the event to feel fearful of violence, to a person or property, or substantially interfere with peoples’ right to enjoy or access a public place. What powers do police have? If police form the view that an event is, or is likely to become, an out-of-control event, they have the power, under the new legislation, to enter any place (without a warrant), give directions and take any steps they consider reasonably necessary to stop or prevent the event, to disperse event guests, to identify the event organisers or persons committing offences and to protect public order and safety. An event does not have to be out-of-control before police can exercise these powers. What offences have been introduced? There are a number of new offences that have been introduced under the new legislation. These offences target event organisers (and their parents), gatecrashers and others involved in an out-of-control event. Event organisers (and their parents): A person who organises (i.e. is substantially involved in arranging, hosting, managing, advertising or promoting the event) an event that becomes an out-of-control event commits an offence (maximum penalty: $12,100 or 1 year’s imprisonment). If the person who organised the out-of-control event is a child (under 17 years of age), and their parent or guardian gave them permission to organise the event, the parent or guardian commits the offence. If the out-of-control event is held at a place where the person does not live or for which the person does not have lawful authority to use, higher penalties apply (maximum penalty: $18,150 or 3 years’ imprisonment). It is a defence if the event organiser can prove that they took reasonable steps to prevent the event from becoming out-ofcontrol (i.e. having appropriate parental supervision or crowd control for the event, responsibly supervising the supply and

consumption of alcohol at the event (including BYO alcohol), having arrangements in place to appropriately disperse event guests after the event, ending the event as soon as possible after persons who are not invited to the event (e.g. gatecrashers) enter the place where the event is being held, not inappropriately promoting the event on social media). Gatecrashers: It is an offence for a person who has been refused entry to an event (e.g. gatecrashers) to cause or contribute to an event becoming an out-of-control event through out-of-control conduct at or near the event (maximum penalty: $12,100 or 1 year’s imprisonment). Persons involved in the event: It is an offence for a person to fail to comply with a direction given by a police officer in relation to an out-of-control event (maximum penalty: $12,100 or 1 year’s imprisonment). Circumstances of aggravation (e.g. assaulting or threatening to assault another person, damaging property or throwing rocks or bottles) in breach of the police officers direction will attract higher penalties (maximum penalty: $18,150 or 3 years’ imprisonment). Is it true, I could be required to pay the police costs? Yes. A person who is convicted of relevant offences for organising an out-of-control event or failing to comply with a direction given by a police officer, may also be ordered by the court to pay all or some of the costs incurred by police in attending or responding to the out-of-control event. If the out-of-control event was organised by a child, the court may call on the child’s parent or guardian to pay these costs. What if my event starts to get out-of-control? If your event starts to get out-of-control call Triple Zero (000) immediately and consider what steps you can safely take to end the event. Early intervention by police may stop an event from becoming out-ofcontrol and could reduce the ultimate costs incurred by police in attending or responding to the out-of-control event. However, police are not there to provide security for your event and the capacity of police to respond to any incident or event depends on the resources available at the time and the nature of the incident in question. When police arrive follow their directions. If your party is out-of-control, or police believe your party is likely to become out-of-control, they have the power to enter any place (without a warrant), give directions and take any steps they consider reasonably necessary to stop or prevent the event, to disperse event guests, to identify the event organisers or persons committing offences and to protect public order and safety. It is an offence to fail to comply with any rea-

sonable directions given to you by a police officer, and if charged and convicted you could face a significant fine or prison sentence. Am I liable if my event gets out-of-control despite my best efforts? Police will conduct an investigation into the out-ofcontrol event before considering whether to lay charges. As part of the investigation, police will consider whether or not reasonable measures had been taken to avoid the event getting out-of-control (i.e. having appropriate parental supervision or crowd control for the event, responsibly supervising the supply and consumption of alcohol at the event (including BYO alcohol), having arrangements in place to appropriately disperse event guests after the event, ending the event as soon as possible after persons who are not invited to the event (e.g. gatecrashers) enter the place where the event is being held, not inappropriately promoting the event on social media). If charges are laid, it will be a matter for the court to determine if measures taken by the event organiser were appropriate in the circumstances. Can police seize event equipment or do other things? Police already have powers under the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 (Qld) to enter premises (without a warrant) to give noise abatement directions, turn off music and seize equipment. How do I register my party of event with police? You can register a QPS Party Safe party online with police by completing the Party Safe Online Registration Form available through the QPS Party Safe website (www.police.qld.gov.au/party). Community events can also be registered with police through Event Safe and event organisers completing the Event Safe Online Registration Form available through the QPS Event Safe website (www.police.qld.gov.au/eventsafe). If you don’t have access to the internet, you can register your party or event by telephoning Policelink on 131 444 or visiting your local police station. Will registering my party or event make any difference to the police response? Registration of your party or event does not mean police will provide security for your party or event. However, on the day, police may attend or drive past the address, or telephone the event organiser, to check that everything is proceeding safely. Irrespective of whether your party or event is registered, police will respond to a party or event if there is a specific request to do so either from someone at the event, a neighbour, a concerned parent or if it is in the public interest to do so in order to maintain community order and safety. The capacity of police to undertake patrols, or respond to an incident at a party or event, will depend on the resources available at the time and the nature of the incident in question.

COOROY RAG

THE Mary River Cod, one of Australia’s most endangered fish species, is listed as a notake species under the Fisheries Act in 1994 to help preserve the remaining natural population. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Russell Overton said that the no-take classification requires fishers to return Mary River Cod back to the water unharmed if caught. “Possessing Mary River Cod caught in its natural distribution is illegal in Queensland and can carry an on-thespot fine of $440 or a maximum penalty of $110,000,” Mr Overton said. “If caught unintentionally while targeting other species, care should be taken to ensure the fish

is immediately returned unharmed to the water from which it came. “If the hook cannot be successfully removed without harming the fish, try to cut the line as close to the hook as possible to give the fish the best possible chance of recovery. Mr Overton said that studies have shown that growth rates and the ability to breed are reduced significantly in fish that are caught on a regular basis. “It’s important we do everything we can to protect the natural population of this iconic native species,” he said. “Fishers who regularly find they are unintentionally catching Mary River Cod should consider altering their fishing equipment or location to try to decrease

the likelihood of catching the species.” Mr Overton said that fishers could legally catch and keep Mary River Cod at the state’s Stocked Impoundment Dams. “Fishers are permitted to possess one Mary River Cod provided it is a minimum of 50cm in length and caught upstream of the walls of Cressbrook, Hinze, Maroon, Moogerah, North Pine, Somerset and Wivenhoe dams, and lakes Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam) and Clarendon,” he said. “Outside these areas, Mary River Cod are strictly a no-take species. “Regular patrols are conducted along the Mary River and its tributaries to ensure fishers are complying with the

law. “Members of the public can assist with the protection of Mary River Cod by reporting illegal taking or possessing to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116. “To assist investigations, take note of personal details such as the offenders’ appearance,

age, clothing, vehicle registration details and location, however, do not engage the person, as this can compromise an investigation.” For more information on no-take species of fish in Queensland, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

Something about Mary A DRIVE through the Mary Catchment, from Maleny where the Mary River flows from the Conondale Ranges to Hervey Bay where the Mary flows to the sea some 320 km later, will take you through a diversity of landscapes and environments. Conondale resident Todd Fauser’s environment is near the headwaters of the Mary River. The lush, rainforest landscape lured the Fausers to Queensland several years ago, from the dry flat country of the Eyre peninsula in South Australia where too many droughts and the need for change saw Todd and wife Julie leave sheep and wheat farming and make the 2500 km journey to greener pastures. The Fausers subsequently spent many years cleaning up the

riverbanks on their property; removing weeds like lantana and revegetating with native riverbank species which would in time, reduce the erosion on the banks, improve water quality and also create habitat for a myriad of native fauna species. So impressed were the neighbours by the work the Fausers were doing that they were also encouraged to work on rehabilitating and protecting their own piece of the river. Inspired by the landscape that surrounded him Todd picked up a camera when he moved to Conondale and joined a photography club so that he could learn to capture the stunning scenes he saw around him. Todd’s award winning image of the Obi Obi Gorge in flood is one of the more spectacular

scenes he has captured, and as Todd tells the story, it took some doing to actually take the photo. “You would only see the Obi like that for a couple of days of the year, when it’s in flood after having hundreds of millimetres of rain, plus the weather was really stormy and threatening - it created an atmosphere that you wouldn’t get on a sunny day” said Todd. “To get the shot, I had to climb out onto the rocks into the floodwaters with my tripod and camera and it was a bit tricky with boots muddy from the rainforest trail to the gorge”. Todd’s images of the Mary River now appear in a number of publications, including the Something About Mary booklet produced by the Mary River Catchment

Coordinating Committee (MRCCC). Most recently, Todd was honoured to have one of his images selected as the cover image for the Australian River Restoration Centre’s prestigious RipRap Publication, a professional publication for water and river managers throughout Australia. Todd’s Mary River photography will hopefully encourage the

wider community to appreciate and care more for the river by creating recognition that there really is Something about Mary! Todd will have a selection of his images for display and sales at this year’s Noosa Festival of Water on Sunday 29 th June 2014 from 10 am until 3 pm at the Noosa Botanic Gardens and the Lake Macdonald Amphitheatre.

Expert pool store opens in Cooroy

THE owners of local pool and spa care business Poolwerx, Michelle and Conrad Reed, have taken over the pool shop in Cooroy on Emerald Street, offering pool owners walk-in access to leading advice locally. Servicing over 1,000 pools from Noosa to Gympie with three vans on the road, Mr Reed said the store created a new central retail hub for his thriving mobile business. “We’ve been operating in the area for the

past eight years, starting out as a pool manin-a-van and growing to three vans on the road. Now, thanks to a loyal and strong customer base, we’ve been able to open our first retail store,” he said. “It means we’re open to an entirely new market that will not only boost our existing mobile business but also allow customers to walk in and speak to one of us about their pool problems in person.” “Some people prefer to look after their pools themselves, so these people can explore new energy saving pool equipment and use our advanced water testing equipment to ensure they’re walking away with the right chemicals and a treatment plan.” With Poolwerx’s recently released Winter Pool Care Survey revealing that more than half of pool owners across the country failed to maintain their pool throughout winter, Mr Reed said now was a good time for pool owners to devise a pool plan for the colder months ahead. “Switching off on pool care won’t save you money in the long run. Allowing bacteria to flourish for months may result in hefty unexpected costs to fix a green pool come the start of the swimming season,” he said. “You could also be jeopardising the efficiency of your pool equipment from imbalanced water chemistry, resulting in repair or replacement and often voiding the warranty of new equipment.

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

“Instead, pool water needs to be tested fortnightly throughout winter to ensure the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6 and the chlorine level at 2-3 PPM. “The pool pump and filter should also run every day, but only for up to six hours unlike up to 12 hours needed during summer. Pool equipment should also be checked each week to ensure it is working effectively.” PoolWerx Cooroy is located at 1/6 Emerald Street, Cooroy. Book a media change for your pool in June and receive a $50 in store credit. For more information call 1800 009 000 or visit the website www.poolwerx.com.au.

LAST DAY THURSDAY 26TH JUNE

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society WINTER is approaching and for most Orchids this means a dormant period. By this I mean they require less watering than in summer time. Plants like the Cooktown Orchid I withhold water on my plants from the end of May to September as north of Cairns where the plants originate receive little or no rain in winter. Other Orchids like Soft Cane Dendrobiums need bright light through win-

ter to flower well as these orchids grow on deciduous trees in their native habitat. They require only enough water to stop the canes shrivelling. To learn more about orchid growing the Noosa Orchid and Foliage Society conducts it’s meetings on the first Saturday of the month held at the Tinbeerwah hall. THE Cooroy Probus Club enjoyed a inspiring visit to the Noosa Arts and Craft Centre situated in Wallace House, Noosaville. What a wonderful treasure we have right here in our area. Members of the Arts and Crafts Clubs were there in force to demonstrate their particular artistic skills, to explain the intricacies of their work and to encourage our Probus members to become involved. An amazing display of quality arts

and crafts were there on display for us to see, admire and to purchase. A scrumptious morning tea was much appreciated by our members during which lots of time was spent chatting to these talented, local artists. Finally we staggered across the road to another Noosa treasure, Blue Ginger, for a really delicious lunch, promising ourselves that we must return....soon.

news May is NF (Neurofibromatosis)month

COOROY RAG

MAY is NF (Neurofibromatosis)Month. NF Sunshine Coast was created in 2011 by Directors and Co-founders Tracey Darragh (Who has NF) and Deb and Anderson. My name is Tracey, I am 39 year old and live with NF1. As a young child, I had many health issues and complications, the doctors never knew what was wrong. When I was 11, I first noticed a bump on the left side of my ribs. The doctors thought they would remove it in outpatients. This took a lot longer than expected as the doctors had trouble removing it. When the results came back it was NF1. My world was turned upside down. The knowledge of NF was limited and my future was unknown. Living with NF is a constant strain, with different ongoing pain and it is very hard emotionally. I am a very positive and outgoing person but some days it is very hard to put on this face, especially when you look in the mirror and you just wish you weren’t covered in fibromas (tumours that grow under the skin causing growths on the outside). They grow along nerves, under the skin, and the older I get the more they are growing. Some of these have started to get itchy but the doctors say there is nothing they can do to help this. I am now covered all over my body and I also have multiple café au lait spots and Scoliosis. I suffer badly from headaches most days and this has become part of my life. I keep trying to move on, taking medications to try and help control them. At times they can turn into debilitating migraines, where I can vomit for many hours, these can take a few days to recover from. When I was a teenager I had a large fibroma removed from my bottom eye lid and a large one cut from my index finger as it was becoming an issue. At the age of 15 they took

www.cooroyrag.com.au

off about 78, cutting and burning, as they didn’t know what method was most effective. All the ones that were burnt off have come back. I have a fibroma growing outside my urethra area which is causing a constant feeling of wanting to go Tracey had her dyed to the toilet. In purple by Mel at Salon Unique as part of a July 2013 I had fundraiser for the NF surgery which awareness campaign they thought was going to be simple and got this tumour removed. What a healing process it was after I ended up having to take 3 months off work and was very unwell. Over the last 18 months I have had reoccurring bursitis in my shoulders. Recently they have done some tests to look into to this further as they said shouldn’t be happening this much. The test have come back as Rheumatoid arthritis which they think could be linked with NF being nerve related so am off to see a specialist . People can be very cruel and treat you differently because of the way you look . Thinking you might be contagious and that they might catch it. I have had sales people serve other people around me, which is very hurtful, but I keep my head held high and smiling because “It’s ok to be different”. I really want to make a difference for others with NF and try and create awareness for people so they can understand what we live with. For more information on Neurofibromatosis visit NF Sunshine Coast facebook page.

Wait to you open the front door, WOW! The best way to describe the home is probably by stating that it is two joined pavilions. The main pavilion is of octagonal design with soaring high timber ceilings, open plan living with lots of natural light for entertaining. This pavilion with the open plan living also includes the large family size timber kitchen, separate office and main bedroom with walk in robe and ensuite. The other adjoining Pavilion consists of two good size bedrooms, main bathroom, workshop and a double garage. Ample water from the large Lilly covered dam and rain water storage tanks. After 20 years of enjoyment, it is time for the current owner to move on. This is truly a stunning property and worthy of a detailed inspection and serious consideration. Price $690,000. Dreams come true at Erindale Park

THE excitement is building for soon to be Cooroy locals Matt, Massey, Piper and Declan Tomasini as the young family fulfil the dream of owning their own home. The new owners of Lot 1, Erindale Park had been dreaming of having their own family home for years and could not be happier with the decision to build from scratch. “We have been renting the same place for nine years and it has been a dream to own our own place,” Matt said. “When you go and look at an established house we always found that we would want to make changes, which would cost a lot extra. With this, we can start everything from scratch and put in exactly what we want,” Massey said. “We have started with the basic plan that was part of the package for this site, which we thought was great and really suited us, but have made some alterations like putting in a walk in pantry. “Now the colour chart is getting a work out as the kids choose the right colour for their rooms and help us finalise everything.” As first home builders and owners, Massey and Matt said the Erindale Park experience had been outstanding. “The developers Val and Kev are actually pre-cutting all the blocks for the develop-

ment sites, and that really saves buyers a lot of cost. We saw that this had already been done, which was a major drawcard. The other big thing is that at Erindale Park the finished project includes the driveway, fences and garden….when you look at kit homes and things like that so many things are not costed in and you can get caught out. We did not want to be left with anything else to do,” Matt said. “Dealing with Ausmar and Wythes has been great. They are on the ball. Any silly questions I have, I just email or ring and I get answers straight away. It has been a really positive experience,” Massey said. In addition to all the benefits offered at Erindale Park, the community of Cooroy was a big attraction. “Cooroy was pretty much in our mind for quite a while, the proximity of Cooroy to everything. We both work on the coast and our families are nearby. It is also a nice little growth area that is really starting to show its value,” Matt said. “Cooroy has everything doctors, schools, shopping. It is not a massive place, but still has a great community atmosphere to it,” Massey said. Wythes Real Estate Representative Samantha Hargrave said the Tomasini’s were among a growing number of families moving to Cooroy. “Cooroy is a very special community and the Erindale Park development offers such great value for money,” Mrs Hargrave said. “There has been such a lot of interest in Erindale Park. I expect many more young families will join the Tomasini’s very soon.” For more information about Erindale Park visit the website www.erindalepark.com.au and sign up for regular updates via our Enewsletter or contact Samantha Hargrave at Wythes Real Estate on 0417 750 507.

Fusion: Fun, fabulous and completely free COOROY Fusion Festival organisers underpromised and over-delivered last weekend with the heart of the hinterland’s fourth outing. Festooned with colourful pompom garlands and necklaces made by the local school community and team of orange shirted volunteers there was no doubting Cooroy is a community who knows how to pull together to celebrate the 2014 Cooroy Fusion Festival. Like a tropical fruit salad there was something to suit all tastes from Matty George’s chainsaw carvings to vintage cars, orchids and cupcakes. Against the backdrop of talented local musicians from Noosa District High School in the morning to Neil Duddy, Mira Wray and Asa Broomhall who entertained the late afternoon, evening crowds in the big tent. From 9am – 3pm Maple Street was literally buzzing as Alan, from Cooroora Woodworkers Club Annual Wood and Craft Show turned a wooden goblet in the Memorial Hall alongside the jams, arts and high quality crafts such as Mohair Magic’s winter warmers being sold by Val Chopping. Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society’s Annual Mother’s Day Show was in full swing too. Showcasing an incredibly diverse range of stunning orchids with many available for the enthusiastic green thumbs. While celebrity Chef Matt Golinski admitted that he had the best job in the world as he taste tested over 20 cupcakes from the junior and masters Cupcake competition. Sugar icing, pompons and free face painting aside the most colourful event of all was the highly popular pig racing fundraiser. After dashing around an obstacle course these little piggies went to market to raise money for local footy team the Pirates. One family soon discovered their piglet Georgia bought home the bacon when their $50 bid turned into $118 after their piglet won scooping them half the stake-money much to their delight. While other little piggies went wee, wee, wee in the Animal Farms petting zoo. [IMAGES Animal Farm: Alexis from Noosaville wi chook] [Pip with piggie]. Others found their funny bone at Cooroy Library watching comedy duo Bazil & Grumble drive home environmental messages with Which Bin Is That? Arts and crafts were once more in force at the Butter Factory with Journey Through Time and Place showcasing local leading lights from the Cooroy Potters, [ceramic artist Pamela Walsh] and Noosa District’s talented Year Nine pottery students. Attendees were also invited to get their hands dirty with an enormous array of free creative activities such as sculpting, canoe making and painting in the style of the Gubbi Gubbi people. “Every year we say this Cooroy Fusion Festival will be the best yet, and it’s true,” said Chairman John Dangar.

Noosa Chorale (Shutterbug Photography) IMAGINE a concert with a 22-piece baroque orchestra, four outstanding Queensland soloists and 84 singers, anyone of whom could be your next door neighbour. Well, that’s what to expect when Noosa Chorale presents its biggest and most ambitious concert yet

at The J in Noosa Junction on Sunday, June 8. The occasion? To celebrate its founding 20 years ago by local solicitor Joseph McMahon who believed Noosa needed a choir which could perform the works of the great classical western

composers. Since then this popular choral group has presented more than 40 major choral pieces and its Christmas Wassail concerts are always a sell-out. “Messiah” by George Friderick Handel has been described as the most famous sacred oratorio ever written. It

was the Chorale’s first major performance in 1994 and, appropriately, it has been chosen again to acknowledge its twentieth anniversary. Handel was Germanborn and wrote operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos in the Baroque style. Typical of a genius, he did not

live an ordinary life and settled in London under the patronage of Queen Anne, enjoying ongoing support from the Royal Court. His musical achievements were almost unmatched and for this he was held in the highest regard. Beethoven is said to have exclaimed, “Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived”, and Haydn is believed to have wept like a child when he heard the famed Messiah “Hallelujah” chorus declaring, “He is master of us all”. Handel died aged 74 in 1759 and is interred in Westminster Abbey. More than 3000 mourners attended his funeral. Choir music director Adrian King will conduct the Chorale, the Noosa Sinfonia and soloists are Gaynor Morgan, Nick Kirkuk, Samuel Piper and Sarah Court. Whats on @ The Butter Factory 14 MONTHS after the conclusion of his multi-state touring exhibition, two time Deadly Award finalist Jandamarra Cadd has put together the largest ever collection of his works to be exhibited. The Butter Factory Arts Centre will be hosting this exciting display of existing and new works including his Archibald entry for 2014 on opening night. “This work is my most adventurous yet, I went somewhere with my painting that I’ve never gone before”, shares Mr Cadd. “It has been a challenge, especially with completing it early along with my other pieces, but I really wanted to be able to share it with my community here on the Sunshine Coast before it goes down to Sydney to be judged”

The exhibition, which is entitled “One People One Heart One Mob” is consistent with the artist’s human condition themes and aims to show his passion for human rights and equality. “For me my portraits are not just about capturing a likeness, but about how I can use them within an image to speak volumes about how we are all human beings and about bringing awareness of this to promote a future for all people to walk together as one mob. Jandamarra had been painting for 25 years and has quite a strong and large following which also extends to social media where he also shares many of his paintings. The exhibition is at the Butter Factory Arts Centre until the 5th July.

THE third exhibition of Noosa District State High School’s talented graduating senior visual art students will be hosted by the Butter Factory Arts Centre titled Collections to 5 July 2014. The art students have just completed a body of work exploring the concept Collections. Students were asked to respond to the idea of collections, and how collections by their very nature constitute a plethora or abundance. Collections are often very personal, and provide insight to the viewer about the collector. This exhibition is the students’ personal response to ‘Plethora’, and the diversity within the student responses highlights their individuality. Both exhibitions One Heart One People One Mob and Collections continue until Saturday 5 July. The community is invited to attend the following events programmed throughout the duration of the exhibitions: Public Programs: · Get Creative: Saturday 21 June 10am – 12noon A series of free, family orientated art activities at the

Butter Factory Arts Centre. Be inspired by the latest exhibition then spend time creating your own piece with family and artists. All ages welcome. · Time for Tots Storytelling: Wednesday 4 June, 9.30am at the Butter Factory. Exhibition related art activities follow a guided tour for tots. Held in conjunction with Cooroy Library. · KidzArt – Painting with Acrylics: Wednesday 2 July 11am 5 – 8yr olds; 12:30pm 9 – 12yrs Children’s holiday art class specially developed to complement the current exhibition. Learn skills and techniques with an experienced art teacher. $8 per child each workshop, bookings and pre-payment essential. Contact the Butter Factory Arts Centre on 5329 6580 for info or bookings. The Butter Factory Arts Centre is located at 10 Maple Street, Cooroy and is open free to the public from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to noon. The festival will also be supporting local charities with profits going to Katie Rose Hospice, Riding For The Disabled and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Festival organiser Anythony WynneHoelscher said “All 3 organisations receive little or no government funding, so it’s crucial our community gets behind these great people to help them continue the fantastic work they do for Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast region. Eumundi Live is proud to be involved and do what we can”. Gracing the stages will be the likes of Elliot The Bull, Tanya Batt, Funkzilla, His Merry Men, Kyle Lionhart, Mus-

Due to illness, Shaoman Du, owner and head chef of Cooroy Chinese for the past 14 years has made the hard decision to sell the restaurant. “We feel great pride and pleasure that we have serviced the Cooroy community with a passion to provide the best authentic Chinese cuisine,” said Du. “We have loved every minute of our time in the restaurant as well as contributing to the community. “We have decided to sell the business and restaurant to chefs that are more than qualified and ready to take on the job of not only providing the same quality of food, but innovating and bringing their own piece of China to the menu,” said Du. “We have trained these chefs and new owners extensively as to not detriment the quality of food we have provided and we know you will also enjoy their food. Special thanks to Murray, Lyndal, and the whole of the Hinternoosa team for their support over these years. The new owners are set to take over as of the 1st of July 2014.

Strength training, is it for me? Full Body Thai & Oil Massage Back I Neck I Head I Shoulder & Arm I Foot & Legs

$60 per hour $35 per ½ hour Shop 1/104 Memorial Drive, Eumundi

IF you’ve ever wondered if strength training is for you, the answer is Yes! Strength training is for anyone, at any age and it has many health benefits! Strength training has both physical and mental health benefits and is an important component of any fitness regime. It provides improved muscle strength and tone which protects your joints from injury and helps you maintain and improve mobility, flexibility and balance. Improved posture, increased bone density and reduced risk of osteoporosis are reason enough to do strength training. But when you add proven benefits such as prevention and control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity

it confirms that we all should be doing strength training. Weight management and increased muscle-to-fat ratio is another benefit. That doesn’t mean you become a bulging body builder but rather that it helps to reduce body fat. Also, as you gain muscle, your body burns more kilojoules when at rest so strength training helps your metabolism. Strength training also results in greater stamina. As you grow stronger, you won’t get tired as easily. Your sense of wellbeing is improved as resistance training can boost your self-confidence, improve your body image and reduce the risk of depression. Even benefits like a better night’s sleep and avoidance of insomnia are benefits that you will see.

Some like it hot ARE your eyes itchy and burning? Do they constantly feel like there is sand in them? Have you used all the common tear substitute drops and gels to no avail? If you answered yes to these questions then, according to local optometrists Jenny Currie and Heather McLeod at optometry@cooroy, you just might benefit from the latest innovative dry eye treatment – Blephasteam. “Dry eyes occur when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears, or those they do produce evaporate too quickly. In around a third of cases, it is caused by the meibomian glands in the eyelids which secrete oils. The problem occurs when these oils are too thick and waxy. Unfortunately it is usually an aging thing” sympathises Jenny. “The result is that the layer of fluid that coats your eyes evaporates too quickly, leaving them dry and inflamed. Symptoms you can expect are a chronic stinging and a gritty, burning and itchy feeling. It’s quite common and affects at least 8 percent of women and about 5 percent of men

over 50.” Heather says that “We have been using the new Blephasteam goggles with several of our patients for the last few months and having great success with relieving their dry eye symptoms. The goggles look a lot like swimming goggles and when worn they deliver a controlled level of warm moist air directly to the eyes and lids, melting the waxy oils in the glands of the lids.” “Blephasteam sessions are safe and comfortable and take around 15 minutes. We have found that often just once a week for a few weeks might be all that is required depending on the severity of the problem.” If you are suffering dry eye symptoms, be sure to mention this to your optometrist at your next eye examination. Your optometrist will assess your tear film and meibomian glands and then may recommend eye drops, gels, vitamin supplementation or Blephasteam treatment to relieve your inflammatory dry eye problem. To arrange an appointment or for more information phone 5442 5555.

Bone density & muscle tone CONCERNED about bone density and muscle tone but don’t quite fit into the gym scene? Try the unique approach of Mindful Resistance Training for Women Kiah Williams has over 15 yrs experience in personally coaching women in body-shaping and strength training. Herself a body-shaping state level competitor in the 90’s, and quali-

fied fitness coach, over the years she has developed a unique technique that combines mindfulness & awareness with resistance exercise. “My approach to helping people shape & strengthen their bodies has itself gone through a transformational process much like the ladies I help. I started helping them in the usual ‘nopain no-gain’ paradigm at my consultancy in

S.A. but realised that approach was not really applicable to all women. I decided to integrate some of the various meditation and gentler martial art skills that I had learnt over the years, and the technique just seemed to develop. I call it “Mindful Resistance Training” because it encourages you to really focus your awareness not only on a specific body part but also

on the energy that is moving and being held at various points of the body. The result is a quality workout where you are not in the gym for hours (or years) with little to show. Usually clients see good results within around two months when they train this way twice a week”. “This type of training is excellent for women of all ages. Some of my clients are in their 60’s and

realise that gentle weight training gives them the confidence, strength and muscle shape they need”. Kiah will be presenting a Mindful Bone Density Training and Muscle-Toning seminar & demonstration workshop for women of all ages, Saturday 14THJune 1pm-4pm at Cooroy Library, 9 Maple St Cooroy, Qld. $65 pp. For bookings & information ph 0427094144.

Grief, resilience and seeing the bigger picture I HAD been a counsellor for many years when my daughter was killed in a car accident; it is still very difficult to write those words, says Sharon Hardy, counsellor at Harmony Wellness Centre. “Though I had been asking questions most of my life, it was then that I began studying in earnest; about life and death, grief and resilience. Most importantly, I learnt how each of us has the capacity to live with and indeed grow from life’s challenges; and that sometimes these experiences illuminate profound and meaningful truths. “Don’t get me wrong here, knowing does not necessarily take away the pain of loss, but it does help give new understanding of our place in the continuum of life and reminds us that love never dies. Helping others to find the bigger picture of their lives has now become my life’s work. When life doesn’t turn out how you dreamt it would, when relation-

ships falter, when you lose a loved one or yourself; it can help to share with someone who has walked the path before. “I have the bits of paper for my years at university and my own experience of learning to live with loss. If you need someone to talk with, or would like to learn to meditate to find your own answers, give me a call. If you are ready to experience the bigger picture of how our lives are an expression of learning and growth I highly recommend Past Life Regression Therapy. I have studied with Dr Brian Weiss, renowned psychiatrist and reincarnation teacher, and can vouch for the effectiveness of this safe and gentle healing.” Please call into the Harmony Wellness Centre in Kauri Street, Cooroy, ring Sharon on 0438 217 000 or visit www.livingwithloss.com.au for Professional Care from an Experienced Heart.

NDSHS Cross Country THE Noosa District State High School cross country was finally run last Friday May 16 after being rescheduled due to the recent few weeks of bad weather. Students and teachers ran the course around the oval, farm and school perimeter, and despite the muddy track, enjoyed completing the circuit between light intermittent showers of rain. Middle School HOD Murray Gordon made a bet with the Year 8’s and 9’s that if they beat him, he would have to buy them lunch from the tuckshop. Mr Gordon bought a couple of lunches for two successful Year 8 students following the race. Students who completed with circuit with good times will compete at the Noosa District Cross Country on May 23, where a regional cross country team will be decided.

NCC students join in the fun at local kids tri ON May 18th, a group of students from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy joined more than 700 other Sunshine Coast kids in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. Held at Stockland Park in Bokarina, this was one of 12 events hosted annually across Australia by Sanitarium and its partners, making it one of the largest series of kids sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. The Weet-Bix TRYathlon series has been operating for 16 years and encourages kids aged 7-15 to get healthy and active while building confidence to ‘give it a TRY’ in a fun and rewarding environment. Participants completed different distances according to their age group and each child who finished received a medal and enjoyed the opportunity to meet sporting ambassadors like Brett Lee (Australian Cricket Legend) and James Horwill (Wallabies Captain). Congratulations to our local kids for giving it a go - especially for several of them who completed their very first Triathlon!

Above: Kai Hobson, Eli Taylor, Josh Taylor, Molly Riches and Isabelle Clare from NCC were happy to receive their finisher’s medal.

COOROY state School recently held its annual cross country event. After being rained out once, the postponed event on Wednesday 7 May was held under clear skies and the school was awash with colour. All students from all year levels had an opportunity to compete and everyone who was there on the day competed and completed the course for their age group even if some did need a little extra encouragement. As an added incentive, Principal Des Deighton ran the whole course with every age group and the children were challenged to beat him home which most of them did. Mr Deighton said he was incredibly proud of the effort of the students. “it was great to see everyone’s determination to finish the event even those students who were not athletic,” said Mr Deighton. “School events such as this are

THE Pomona Cooroy Demons continue the put the small club in front of the national football scene with local product Alik Magin gaining selection in the Victorian VFL squad to take on South Australia. Alik was voted the coaches best and fairest for the VFL by all the team coaches last season as well as Bendigo’s best and fairest. This is quite an achievement as the VFL is basically used by the AFL clubs as feeder clubs with every VFL club linked to a VFL club except Bendigo Gold. The Pomona Demons are having a strong season with player numbers increasing every week. Congratulations to Paul Bruce who amongst the varied roles he performs at the club has developed our Auskick program to have 50 young footballers running

around the oval on a Thursday afternoon. The many highlights of the Auskick included a visit from 4 Brisbane Lions on the 8th of May including the Lions mascot Bernie. All sides are performing on the paddock and are a credit to the club and coaches. Our clubs U16 side would like to thank sponsor Michelle Vercoe of Countryside Real Estate for their training singlets. Michelle is a strong community minded local who is always supporting local sporting clubs thanks Michelle.
