Locals hit ’em up on ANZAC Day

May 2, 2012

Not my fave

IT’S always tricky to work on a holiday, especially when the day invites you to start drinking at dawn and gambling at noon. Yes Anzac Day, you stole my heart, my cash and my work camera. Such an emotional day, from tears at the Dawn Service as I remembered our fallen diggers, then more tears as I staggered home at dusk and realised I had lost quite a lot of stuff I’d started out with, not least of all a little dignity. Two up is a dangerous game. Note to children: Forget the chocolates and flowers for Mother’s Day this year kiddies, you might want to think about a nice little grocery hamper instead. That way you’ll have something to snack on in the car while I spend the day in the casino. Cereal is quite filling. Just kidding … or am I? What I will take bets on though is that next year someone else will be in charge of the camera. So there you have it … Dawn, diggers and dignity … Finding out the expense account doesn’t cover two-up losses … Not my fave!

Happy Mother’s Day to all mums. I hope your day is special. Boisterous punters congregated in the RSL Hall last Wednesday after the official ANZAC Day ceremonies were completed to enjoy the tradititional game of two-up. Queensland has now joined the rest of Australia with the game now legal on the public holiday.

news

Here we go again! Another election over, more celebration and more despair, A new collection of councillors, another venerable Lord Mayor, So many promises to honour, obligations to repay, Let’s hope we get our money’s worth, for that not inconsiderable pay! In the good old days a councillor’s pay was often simply nil, They worried about rubbish, rates, and roads, that seemed to fill the bill, They were happy to get meeting fees, perhaps a couple of meals, None of today’s allowances, no lucrative package deals. Their budgets didn’t run to millions, one of thousands was enough, Now they’ll spend millions, on computers and cars, and stuff. One thing you can be sure of, of that I can guarantee, More heated rhetoric and loud demands, for Noosa to break free, To get their own council, their separate identify, No more of being one of many, no more nonentity. They claim they are something special, a cut above the rest, Whatever you want to nominate, they say Noosa is the best, Premier Newman made a promise before his recent election, That he would see that Noosa would have its resurrection, It would have its very own parks, its very own beaches, Its very own Hastings Street, its very own features, Its very own restaurants, its very own social sets, Its very own rate notices, its very own debts. Getting a decision on separation could be a lengthy process, Maybe unwelcome costs, with no guarantee of success, Someone may decide, to challenge any legislation, And start an expensive legal fight against the separation. The electoral commission will decide if it’s out or if it’s in, I fear it may be messy, it’s hard to say who’d win, It’s difficult when you calmly try to be a little prophetic, When most of the residents are really quite apathetic!

The store has a new look, new fixtures and fittings.

It may be something out of its expected time, a premonition, pre- or post-cognition.” Please contact Geoff Roach, 96 Maple Street, Cooroy or phone 5442 6739.

news Moving mountains to ensure business stays local

COOROY RAG

Peter Lavin

THE news last week that local businessman Peter Lavin had bought Cooroy Mountain Spring Water heralded a collective sigh of relief from within our community, especially from the 60 plus workers who have been living on tenterhooks for seven months. Head of the Cooroy Mountain Group, Greg Dinsey, announced in September last year that the business had gone into administration with debts of $1 million but he was endeavouring to secure investors so he could buy back the Company. The business went into liquidation on March 30th. A bid by Coca Cola Amatil triggered an appeal to administrators Korda-Metha by Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss, Member for Noosa Glen Elmes, LNP Candidate John Connolly and Member for Buderim Steve Dickson to keep the busi-

ness local. It was feared the Coca Cola giant would come in and break up the assets and take the business out of town. The impact on Cooroy and the community would have been another blow after closure of the timber mill in 2000 and changes to the dairy industry. Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, which also encompasses 102 year old Wimmers Softdrinks, is one the townships largest businesses. Mr Lavin who entered negotiations late has signed the contract and it is anticipated the deal will be finalised this week. While Cooroy locals are delighted that a local businessman has saved the company there has been a great deal of sadness expressed for Greg Dinsey who has always been such a staunch supporter of our community.

Queensland’s best woodwork on show

THE state’s top craftsmen and craftswomen will go head to head at the Cooroora Woodworkers Club’s annual Cooroy Wood & Craft Show this Friday and Saturday – May 11th & 12th at the Cooroy Memorial Hall.

The event attracts almost 3000 spectators. A club spokeswoman says woodwork clubs from Warwick to Rockhampton and all points in between will be competing in an interclub competition, the winner taking home a

perpetual shield and a sliding compound bevel saw valued at $1200. There are six categories to enter, woodturning, carving, general woodwork, fret work, pyrography and toy making. (Pryrography is the artistry of using a hot iron on timber). The craftsmen and craftswoman have put weeks and often months of hard work into creating their masterpieces. People will truly be amazed by what can be done with a basic piece of timber. There will be stalls with crafts for sale and lots of demonstrations. A beautifully hand crafted table made by Peter Bradford and other woodworkers will be the main raffle this year. The table is valued at $1,500. People will get the opportunity to see the Cooroora Club’s Sawmill in action and timber slabs will be for sale. It will be a terrific day out and a chance for the different wood clubs to

show off their best pieces of work. Doors will open at 8.30 – 5:30 Friday & 8:30 – 3:00 Saturday with a $2 entry fee. At 3:00pm Saturday will be the awards ceremony and the raffle draw (you need not be

present to win raffle). Light refreshments will be available in the hall, catered by the Cooroy Scouts Group. Hope to see you there! For more information contact Billi Jan Campbell at 5449-1548

Join the Chamber Executive DID you know the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce is one of the most active and strongest Chambers on the Sunshine Coast? That is something that Cooory should be really proud of! The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and its members have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into the community and have been instrumental in some major activities over the years including the development of the Mill Site and the Cooroy Library, Christmas in Cooroy, decorating the town with Christmas decorations each year, the street scaping in the town centre, the Cooroy Pocket Guide, the Hinterland Experience Trail and the Cooroy website to name a few. The Chamber also does extensive lobbying of governments at all levels on a range of issues that affect us all such as traffic and community amenity. There are currently over 130 members of the Cooroy Chamber including both businesses and community groups. And all of the work that is achieved by the Chamber is done by volunteer efforts from the Executive and members. You don’t have to be a business owner to be involved in the Chamber of Commerce - you just need to be interested in the local economy and/or the local community. Over the years we have had many Chamber Executive members who are employees that representative the business they work for – it isn’t just for business owners. One thing they all say is that it is rewarding to be involved and beneficial for the town to have such a strong and active Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is holding its AGM on Tuesday the 12th June 2012 at the Cooroy Bowls Club. Nominations for Executive positions are now open and we urge everyone to consider becoming a member of the executive team! Nominations are due back to the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce by 4pm on 29 May 2012. Email info@cooroy.com.au to get more information and a nomination form.

Become an adult literacy tutor SUNSHINE Coast Council is calling for volunteers interested in enrolling in accredited training in May to become an adult literacy tutor in the Noosa region. Library and Gallery Services Manager, Ross Duncan said Sunshine Coast Libraries are offering the adult literacy training with funding support from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation. “This year, 2012, is the National Year of Reading and research shows that nearly half of the Australian population cannot read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle,” he said. “Council offers free literacy programs for adults to assist them to become functionally literate by helping with reading, writing and basic computer skills and the volunteers play an important role in the success of these programs. “Volunteers will complete an accredited training course and in turn help improve literacy standards on the Coast. “Anyone can become a volunteer literacy tutor, complete the accredited training and obtain the tools and information required to help community members improve their literacy.” There are limited spaces on the course and applicants will be interviewed prior to commencing the training. Volunteer literacy tutor training courses will be held at Noosa Library on 14 May and Cooroy Library on 16 May. The courses include 12 weekly, three hour training sessions. To become a volunteer literacy tutor phone Noosa Library on 5442 4411, Cooroy Library on 5454 9000 or visit www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for further information.

Understanding banking deregulation Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy I MENTIONED in my last column the contribution that the banking and finance industry makes to our economy, $129.8 billion to Australia’s $1.2 trillion economy. Today, let’s to delve more into the World of Banking and how modern banking formed and what regulates the industry that is now such an important part of our economy. Historically, banking in Australia has been tightly regulated, and it wasn’t until as recent as the 1980’s that foreign banks were able to establish branches in Australia. That’s quite a wait considering Australia’s first bank was opened in 1817. Until the 1960’s, Australian banks were divided into savings banks and trading banks. Savings banks paid virtually no interest to their depositors and their lending was restricted to providing mortgages with many savings banks being owned by state governments.

Trading banks didn’t provide services to the general public as their original purpose was to facilitate and/or finance production and trade of commodities, hence the name “merchant”. Today our structures are vastly different, so how did this come about? It was called... deregulation. Deregulation commenced in 1961, which started with the central bank duties being transferred from the Commonwealth Bank to the newly created Reserve Bank of Australia. Over the next 20 years the banking industry slowly went down the path of deregulation with the distinction between trading and savings banks being removed, allowing banks to operate in the money market - the merchant banks’ domain. So, how are our banks regulated in modern times? Australia’s banking regulation is extensive and split mainly between the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, Australian Securities and Invest-

Fiona Hutchings ment Commission and the Code of Banking Practice. This was originally released in 1993, and is the banking industry’s customer charter on good banking service. Virtually all banks providing services to retail customers subscribe to the Code. In my next column I will detail how these regulations and industry standards help you as a consumer of banking and/or finance products. If you have any questions about your banking, please contact me on 5447 7131 or on email at fiona.hutchings@ bendigoadelaide.com.au.

The flood risk to your property SUNSHINE Coast Council can help you find information about the flood risk to your property. Manager Infrastructure Policy Nick Cooney said having a flood resilient community is a priority for council. “Some flood risk information is readily available from council’s website under flood maps, Mr Cooney said. “The on-line flood maps show the modelled extent of flooding associated with river, creek and storm tides. “Council can provide even more detailed information about flood depth and historic flood levels by issuing a Flood Search Certificate. “You might be about to purchase or build a home, or, you might own a home and would like to have a better understanding of its susceptibility to flooding. “A Flood Search Certificate costs $86 and can save people thousands of dollars

as it identifies the level of flood inundation that a property is susceptible to for a defined event. “That means property owners can make well informed decisions about being flood prepared on their property. “An understanding of the flooding susceptibility of a property can assist with planning when making renovations or for being prepared for isolation due to flooding. “Understanding flood risk can also assist with recovery after flooding has occurred. Mr Cooney said it takes approximately 5 days to complete a Flood Search Certificate although complex searches can take a little longer. “The certificate examines the computermodelled 1 in 100 probability flood information that has been undertaken either by council’s hydrologists or provided to coun-

cil from developers through the development assessment process, he said. “Additional information that is supplied on the Flood Search Certificate includes known historic flood records that are relevant to the property and the required minimum habitable floor level. “The certificate search also identifies if the property is in a drainage deficient area or within a flood regulation line. Mr Cooney said council surveyors have almost completed taking measurements of the flood heights from the recent flooding events that occurred in February and March. “These flood heights will be recorded in council’s flood database later in the year and will be used for reporting on Flood Search Certificates. Application forms for a flood search are available on council’s website or to find out more, contact council on 5475 7272.

Patchwork quilt on display at library

THE Bunya Quilt now on display at the Cooroy Library is a beautiful work of art made by the members of the Patches of Cooroy Quilting and Craft Club. The brief form the council for funding was to make a History and Heritage Art quilt in collaboration with orther organisations in Cooroy. The best people were the Cooroy Noosa Geneological Research Group and the Cooroora Woodworkers. One to put us on the right track regarding the history of Cooroy and the other representing the timber industry which helped to start the town. Several of the members of Patches have had training in textile arts, quilting and other skills that allow us to design, and make this experimental art work quilt. Other members helped with different parts of the quilt such as the making of the Gum flowers and the beautifull Possum, hand embroidered. The quilt became a reality and a thing of beauty approximately 15 months after the design work had been done. As this is not a traditional quilt and measures 9 feet by 5feet 6 inches, the making of it and the putting together to become the shape and size it is was a wonderful quilting challenge. Patches know the community and visitors to the library will enjoy viewing this quilt for generations to come.

SUNSHINE Coast Mayor Bob Abbot announced Queensland’s latest environmental icon last week, a 73 metre high Conondale Forest Eucalypt believed to be the state’s tallest tree. Nicknamed in Mr Abbot’s honour, ‘Big Bob’ was discovered by Sunshine Coast Council using cutting-edge Geographic Information System (GIS) technology from the nation’s location intelligence experts Esri Australia. Council found the tree during a project to gain an accurate picture of Sunshine Coast topography and vegetation for future flood modelling and its planning scheme. Mr Abbot said the unique tree provided a bridge between the past and Council’s current vision of being Australia’s most sustainable region – vi-

Providing Total Business Care Principal: Seb Vecchio

What advice do you need?

services include

By AMP Financial Planner Chad Monroe of Provision Wealth Management*

WONDERING if you should add to your super? Thinking about whether you should increase your life cover? Simple questions like these can often turn out to be anything but, leaving you with a myriad of options and courses of action which can often be confusing. These are a few questions that often prompt a call to a financial planner for some guidance. Let’s take the first question. If you find yourself fortunate to have some extra cash to save, topping up your super may be a great idea. If you are a member of a super fund, you may call a financial planner who is employed by the superannuation provider who can provide you with some basic guidance. Sometimes this can be all that is required. Simple advice. Job done. However, it’s equally important not to lose sight of the bigger picture. For example, what if putting that extra money away in super left you short of emergency funds that you need in case the unexpected happens? What if you had a greater need to protect yourself and your family in case you had an illness or accident, and the money would have been better put to paying for adequate insurance? What if you might have been better off to pay off your home loan or higher interest credit card debt? Taking a step back and reviewing your total financial situation with a professional financial planner is something that every Australian should do, yet some feel that financial advice isn’t relevant to their situation. The average Australian has a portfolio of financial interests that typically includes superannuation, bank savings, other investments and, of course, their home. It doesn’t

matter how big or small those individual components are, everyone can benefit from professional guidance to make and save money, and to protect what’s most important to them. Looking at individual components in a disconnected manner can meet a specific need you have at any one time, however you may risk compromising your longer term aspirations or higher priority needs that you didn’t consider at the time. Ultimately, you are likely to benefit most when your entire range of financial needs is considered in total, rather than in isolation. That’s when all the pieces of your financial jigsaw puzzle can fit together. The most valuable advice you can seek out is from a qualified and professional financial planner. For example, members of the Financial Planning Association meet higher standards than that required by law, and their Certified Financial Planner® professionals have achieved the highest financial planning designation which is globally recognised. FPA financial planners work to a world-class Code of Professional Conduct which means that they are bound to put your interests first, and they will work through a comprehensive planning process with you to develop a plan that is specifically tailored to meet your needs. To find a member of the FPA to help you with expert advice, visit www.fpabestpractice.com.au or call 1300 626 393. * Chad Monroe and Provision Wealth Management Pty Ltd are Authorised Representatives of AMP Financial Planning Pty Ltd, ABN 89 051 208 327, AFS Licence No. 232706. UNITYWATER has put price hikes on ice, announcing a freeze on its water and sewerage fees and charges for the next financial year. The Board’s decision to keep prices at current levels for another 12 months will provide welcome relief for Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast households under pressure from the rising cost of living. CEO Jon Black said it was the direct result of ongoing efforts to slash costs and identify savings, and highlighted the benefits of providing water and sewerage services across a larger customer base. “We’ve been able to deliver a price freeze just two years after commencing operations due to a concerted effort to keep costs down and realising the benefits of increased economies of scale, Mr Black said.

“We’ve listened to our customers and have been looking at every aspect of our operations and every program we have in place to see where savings can be made. “We won’t compromise on the quality of our services or investment in essential infrastructure and we have an obligation to provide a return to our owner councils. “Nonetheless, we’ve been able to identify substantial savings through improvements to the way we do business, our tendering and procurement processes and bundling projects across both regions, to give our customers a break from price rises in 2012-13. Mr Black said the freeze would apply to all Unitywater prices, with the exception of trade waste, recycled water and a small number of miscellaneous fees and charges.

Today’s announcement does not apply to the State Government’s bulk water charges which are not controlled by Unitywater. Mr Black said the price freeze would have no impact on Unitywater’s around the clock service delivery or the roll out of its $120 million capital works program in 201213. He was also quick to reassure customers they need not fear being slugged with big increases in 12 months’ time. “Our aim has always been, and will continue to be, to keep prices as low as possible, Mr Black said. This is early days for our organisation and Unitywater will continue its efforts to identify savings and pass those benefits on to its customers as quickly as possible.

GOOD Shepherd Lutheran College is excited to be opening their doors to prospective students and their families for their annual Open Day on Tuesday 22 May. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the College in action – including meeting some of the friendly staff and students, taking a tour of the campus, enjoying morning or afternoon tea and participating in activities. “We are proud to be able to invite prospective students and their parents to come and take a look at our wonderful coeducational Prep-prep to Year 12 College,” says Mr Dyer, Principal of Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Noosaville. “We also understand that when parents are considering a school for their children they might feel more comfortable attending an Open Day rather than attending a one on one appointment – which we also offer throughout the year.” Good Shepherd is a well-established College, which offers students a quality education set in an environmentally friendly bushland setting, and boasts an array of facilities including a state-of-theart library, 25 metre pool, indoor Health and Physical Education Complex and Performing Arts theatre.

Mr Dyer is also keen to point out that along with interactive and up-to-date technologies, and an excellent record of academic success, the College has a strong commitment to Christian values and beliefs with a focus on pastoral care and looking after the needs of students. “The College is proud of its reputation of retaining qualified, professional teaching and supporting staff who are committed to providing a very caring and nurturing environment for our students. “We are also the only independent school on the Sunshine Coast that is offering the International Baccalaureate program for the primary and middle years,” says Mr Dyer. For prospective students that live outside the immediate Noosa area, Good Shepherd owns and operates a fleet of buses servicing Eumundi, Kenilworth, Pomona, Boreen Point, Coolum and surrounding areas - making the College even more accessible. The Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s Open Day is on Tuesday 22 May, at 115 Eumundi Road, Noosaville with two convenient session times: 9.00-11.00am or 3,.30-5.30pm. COOROY RAG police beat with Sergeant Mal Scott THE Cooroy IGA has experienced an increase in thefts recently with four stealing matters referred to the police for investigation and prosecution though the Court system. The Cooroy IGA and for that matter many of the businesses in Cooroy use a range of both overt and covert anti theft measures to catch thieves entering there respective stores and stealing property. Patrons of the Cooroy IGA should be aware that various in store measures are currently in use to observe suspicious behaviour and to apprehend persons seeking to take items without paying for them. As mentioned above, four stealing matter s have been reported to the police in the past month with 3 of the offenders charged and appearing in court to answer criminal charges. Some of the people charged have been apparently highly respected members of the community which is a testament to the fact that you can’t read a book by its cover. With many millions of dollars lost annually by businesses this is not a small issue and any theft reported to the police will be treated seriously and without leniency. Patrons of shops should be aware that there actions are being closely scrutinised and to think before committing a criminal act which may result in a criminal history that will remain with them for life. Parents need to also remind there children of there responsibilities in this area as many of the culprits are person under the age of 17 years. Residents of the Gumboil Road and also Sunrise Road areas should be

aware that several Burglary offences have been reported lately with two suspect vehicles sighted. It appears that offenders are walking into properties hoping to find them unattended. Several sightings of suspect vehicles have been reported to police which include a light silver or gold small 4x4 similar to a Rav4 or Honda CRV and a White Toyota Camry. Suspect persons involved with these two vehicles include a solidly built dark haired female in her late 20’s and a solid to obese 30 year old male with dark short hair. Cooroy Crime rates are down and our clear up rates up which is great news and proof that many of the Cooroy locals take responsibility for there own property and personal safety and greatly assist police in solving crime in the area. Police have charged a 18 and a 16 year old with three unlawful Entries of Motor Vehicle offences and an attempted break and enter of a house in Wattle Street, Cooroy. Police were notified of the youths acting suspiciously at about 11.50pm and police were able to attend within minutes and apprehend the offenders carrying stolen goods from the scene. One of the witnesses commented that she couldn’t believe how fast the police response was and how impressed she was that the offenders were arrested so efficiently. All stolen property was subsequently located and returned to the owners. However, it was concerning that as police were patrolling the vicinity of these crimes and endeavouring to locate other premises and vehicles that had been broken into they found just about

every vehicle that was parked in the street or driveway to be unlocked with property such as purses and GPS’s in clear view from outside the vehicle. The Cooroy Community needs to be aware that the above offenders and other dishonest people are still living in the community so lets not make there parasitic behaviour easier by leaving cars and houses unlocked and easily stolen property in easy reach. People who regularly climb Pomona Mountain as part of there fitness routine should be aware that two cars have been broken into in the past 2 weeks by offenders smashing windows of cars so please do not store valuable items in the car when parking your car at the base car park. Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour at the car park should immediate report the matter to the Pomona or Cooroy Police or at least take the registration number down if possible. Cars hooning in and around Cooroy continues to be an issue. Last month saw three separate instances of community minded witnesses phoning the police and supplying excellent sworn statements in regards hoon drivers which led to the Police interviewing and charging three young drivers with serious driving offences which led to large fines and the loss of licenses. Needless to say that the offending drivers were not impresses that they had been dobbed in by other drivers so witnesses to serious driving offences should be encouraged to report these matters as you may very well be saving someone’s life by doing so.

THE Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry made a number of recommendations in relation to SES activities. One recommendation is that an SES Liaison Officer be part of the Local Disaster Co-Ordination Centre when it is set up at the time of impending disasters. To this end, both our Local Controller and Deputy Local Controller attended a 2 day training event recently. So, if required to act as Liaison Officer, they will be well versed in procedures of the Centre. In early 2011, as everyone knows, Queensland experienced very severe weather patterns, flooding, cyclones and torrential rain. SES members throughout Queensland put in a huge response and as a result, the Govern-

ment issued Flood Citations, which are a type of medal, to many of our volunteers who put in extraordinary hours during this time. Recently these Citations were handed out at a training night by Emergency Management Queensland Regional Director, Peter Twomey and Area Director Andrew Wyatt, who are pictured with Sunshine Coast North Local Controller, Stan Ryan and some of our members. Congratulations and ‘well done’ to all recipients. Pomona SES Group has just taken delivery of a new troop carrier of which all other Groups in our unit are envious. “This troopie is kitted out with all the tools which will allow Pomona to respond in a safe and timely manner to the range of emergencies

Parish welcomes new Priest THE Anglican parish of Cooroora which covers Eumundi, Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Kin Kin and Boreen Point recently commissioned a new Priest in Charge the Rev Gillian Moses. Parishioners, friends and dignitaries packed the Anglican Church in Cooroy with over a hundred people in attendance to welcome the Rev Gillian Moses to the community. Overseeing procedures and presiding was the Right Reverent Dr Jonathon Holland Anglican Bishop of the northern region who spoke with good humour a homily regarding the relevance and influence of the Christian Church in the community and the world. Parish Wardens Stephen Hilditch and Neville Anderson introduced and welcomed Gillian to the parish, while in keeping with tradition members from the different churches presented Rev Moses with symbols and gifts testifying to her position and authority as Priest in Charge of the parish. The Rev Moses’s response was that she is overjoyed with the Arch Bishops invitation to Shepherd the Parish of Cooroora and is excited at the prospect of ministering to the communities that she will serve. Rev Moses will live in the Rectory located in Pomona alongside the Parish office.

Out there and loving it! THE young people of Pomona celebrated National Youth Week, 13-22 April in style. This year the Pomona & District Community House put on a series of circus skills workshops called, “Out There and Loving It!” And loving it they were! With every workshop overflowing with young people learning to juggle, hoola hoop and to unicycle the Pomona Hall was awash with excitement. Event spokesperson Heather Manders said she was thrilled with the turn out and was delighted to see such persistence and determination. “It’s not easy to do some of these activities,” said Heather, “especially the unicycling – I know, I’ve tried it! But everyone has been really fantastic supporting each other to give it a go.” National Youth Week celebrates the important contribution young people make to our community. It is made possible with funding from the Queensland Government and with hours of support from the workshop facilitators. A special thank you to Wendy & Andrew Flanagan from Sunshine Unicycles; Brad Smith – Clownman & Malcolm Pollak who taught juggling and clowning, and Danielle Gonsal & Carla Blonde who taught hoola hoops.

Join the trail, make a sale! DOES ridding your house of junk, helping the environment and earning some extra dollars sound appealing? If so, the national Garage Sale Trail is for you. Australia’s largest and most successful real world community-based marketplace is coming to the Sunshine Coast on Saturday 5 May and everything and anything is up for sale. Sunshine Coast Council Waste Innovation Engineer Graeme Emmerson said locals could help themselves and help the planet simply by getting involved. “Reducing the amount of waste that ends up at the tip and in landfill is vitally important for the future health of our environment and our vision to be

Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant green and diverse,” he said. “Landfills are rapidly reaching capacity across the Sunshine Coast and suitable landfill sites are both scarce and do not represent an ecologically sound solution for the future. “The Garage Sale Trail on 5 May is a chance for everyone to make a positive contribution by allowing their trash to become someone else’s treasure and earn some extra pocket money in the process.” More than 3,450 households across Australia participated in the inaugural Garage Sale Trail in 2011. For more information about the Garage Sale Trail or to register, visit www.garagesaletrail.com.au or www.facebook.com/GarageSaleTrail.

COOROY RAG DHOMS Kitchen will celebrate their first birthday and welcome in the Thai New Year with a Northern Thai “Lanna” set menu on Saturday 5 May. The event is fully booked, however, Dhom and Spencer will present their next 5 course dinner on Saturday 2 June to share some of their favourite Thai street food dishes. The cost is $48 per person. Bookings are essential. “We spent several years

studying and documenting street food in Chiangmai and Bangkok while working on international aid projects in Thailand” says Dhom. “We are excited to share some of our dishes from our travels”. Dhom’s Kitchen’s most popular dish is Pad Thai noodles. The thin rice noodles used in Pad Thai were thought to have been introduced to Thailand by Vietnamese or Chinese merchants several hundred years ago.

It is one of Thailand’s national dishes and was recently rated in the top five favourite dishes in the world. A seemingly simple dish, the version at Dhom’s Kitchen comprises over 20 ingredients. “It is the correct balance of tamarind, lime juice, palm sugar and fish sauce that gives Pad Thai it’s unique taste” says Spencer. “Like many Thai dishes, it is the unusual combination of ingredients that yield an unexpectedly delicious result!”. Spencer notes that there are many versions of Pad Thai across Thailand. One version involves adding prawn tomally to give the noodles a distinct flavour and red colour. Dagun Growers Market celebrates its first year SATURDAY May 26 from 2pm marks the anniversary of the Growers Market and what an interesting and vibrant year it has been. The number of growers supplying market has increased as it was shown in a food production survey in the Mary Valley conducted by Elaine Bradley that the biggest constraint to food producers was they were too busy marketing their produce to be able to spend more time increasing their stock. Other difficulties that featured prominently were difficulties with transport and labour. The surveys recommendations have led to the establishment of a Mary Valley food hub, a central area that can market and distribute local food products and provide support for new and intending growers/food producers. This will enable greater ease of local food made available to cafes, restaurants and food outlets. Dagun Growers Market fosters this philosophy and demands a fair price for growers. It strives to keep local food local and encourages the seasonality of food by offering fresh picked, spray free, high nutrient content fruit and vegetables and gets you tasting new flavours of food!

dining & entertainment Cooroy Chinese to re-open this month

COOROY RAG

DUE to damage sustained in February’s storm, Cooroy Chinese has been unable to operate. This, of course, has made things very hard for owner Shaoman Du especially as the damage happened straight after the restaurant had been closed for renovations. Needless to say the forced closure has had a huge negative impact on Du financially, but most importantly, she couldn’t do what she loved best, cook and to provide the best service she can. “We thank Murray, Lyndal and Penny and all the staff from Hinternoosa for the on-going support and being there for us through this stressful time,” said Du. “Repairs are complete and we are very excited to announce a re-open-

ing on the 11th of May,” said Du. Apart from the structural and décor revamp the restaurant will now be serving coffee as part of their service and there is a scrumptious new menu that will have your taste buds watering. Cooroy Chinese is open 7 days a week for dinner, dine in or take-away from 4.30pm daily with weekly specials. Lunch is Tuesday to Friday 11am to 2pm with daily lunch specials. The restaurant is BYO. “I’d like to thank everyone for their overwhelming and continued support and we look forward to showing off our new-look restaurant,” said Du. So get excited about opening day and don’t forget to bring the Cooroy Rag voucher with you to receive a free bag of prawn crackers for orders over $20. Cooroy Chinese is in Maple Street (opposite the RSL).

A Feast for the Senses at Fusion Food Festival AS a part of Cooroy Fusion on Saturday 12 May, the Cooroy Lower Mill Board are holding the “Fusion Food Festival” to showcase the amazing diversity and offerings of fresh produce and food products available in the region. “The Fusion Food Festival is going to be a great compliment to the other activities in town on 12 May. It is the first year we’ve held it but we’ve had great response from stallholders and will have over 20 stalls showcasing everything from honey to cook books,” said Lower Mill Board Chairperson, Carol Christensen.

“We even have a raw food demonstration at 11am and a music program in the afternoon. Due to the great response, we are confident that it will continue in future years and that the program will expand to include more demonstrations and stallholders.” “The Fusion Food Festival is being held on the same day as Cooroy Fusion which includes performers, sporting groups, markets, workshops and arts. Also in town on that day is the annual Cooroora Woodworkers Wood & Craft Show and the Orchid Society Mother’s Day show.”

The town is going to be alive on Saturday 12 May with so much to do and see! We are really excited to see all four events working together. It will be a great day out!”

dining & entertainment What to expect at the Australian Body Art Carnivale

COOROY RAG

THE 2012 Australian Body Art Carnivale will be taking place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May. Australia’s premier body art event, the Carnivale is a colourful and creative festival experience for all ages, and is FREE for members of the public. The Australian Body Art Carnivale is held annually in the artistic Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Eumundi, only 15 minutes from Noosa and around an hour north of Brisbane. Event Manager Danielle Taylor says the event is nothing short of a ‘A Festival of Colour’ centred around body art in its many and varied forms. “As the name suggests, the Australian Body Art Carnivale certainly has a strong focus on body art in its many and varied forms – from the more readily seen face painting right through to full body painting in the categories of brush and sponge, airbrush and special effects,” she says. “For members of the public, it’s an event like nothing you’ve seen before to watch the human canvases take shape during the competitions,” she says. “While we will have experienced body and make-up artists competing, body art experience is not a prerequisite,” says Danielle. “Many entrants in previous Carnivales had never before painted on a body – they simply used their artistic flair to work on a very different canvas … the human body!” And it’s not just body art competitions. The Carnivale will also host competitions and exhibitions in: Wearable Art (fabulous fashion made from recycled treasures)

Wildflower Fashions owner Janette Harkin (left) raises her glass to models (L-R) Barbie, Sam and Pamela for another successful annual fashion parade. Many well dressed local ladies attended this event held at the boutique last week

Popular psychic meditation class at Cooroy Libary

HEATHER Paterson’s popular psychic meditation class at Cooroy Library every Thursday at 6 pm goes from strength to strength. However, she says new people are always very welcome ! A psychic and clairvoyant, Heather says the popularity of the psychic meditation sessions has exceeded her expectations. “Through word of mouth it is quite amazing how many people have found me. It has evolved into something

very special, a real community feel” Heather, a mother of two, said. Heather puts the success of the session down to two things “Firstly everybody who attends gets a psychic reading. People are always commenting how accurate the readings are. And secondly, people are comment how much more calm and happier they feel after the meditation”. In the Cooroy Libary meditation session, Heather communicate’s and receives accurate messages from the group members’ deceased relatives and friends. “Once the meditation is over I share with everyone what I have seen for each person,” she said. “It’s lovely to be part of this group and to share in the healing that

happens for many people.” Born in Scotland, Heather says she is grateful to have been given such a gift that she shared with her mother and grandfather. “I did a reading with one man and we were able to connect with his girlfriend of about 20 years ago who had died in a car accident when they were together,” Heather said. “They didn’t get to say goodbye, so he was able to say goodbye and get closure after all those years.” To book a psychic reading or enquire about the Thursday 6.15pm Cooroy Library meditation/psychic reading, contact Heather on 0420 924 194 or (07) 5471 0172. EVERY six seconds someone, somewhere, regardless of their age or their gender will die from stroke. Strokes can happen to anyone but many strokes are preventable. The National Stroke Foundation is urging all Australians to follow these six steps to reduce the risk and danger of stroke: Know you personal risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol; Be physically active and exercise regularly; Avoid obesity by keeping to a healthy diet; Limit alcohol consumption; Avoid cigarette smoke. If you smoke, seek help to stop

now; Learn to recognise the warning signs of stroke and act FAST. FAST is an easy way to remember and reocgnise the signs of stroke: Face - Has their mouth drooped?; Arms - Can they lift both arms?; Speech - Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?; Time - Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 now to help lower the number of people suffering from stroke, during May Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy is offering free blood pressure and diabetes risk checks. Come in and know what your number is.

health What would we do without Greg

Mr Greg Crawford, Property Manager, NoosaCare Inc

WINNER of the Excellence in Care Award, Greg Crawford, had some tough competition when NoosaCare nominated him for this award. He was up against carers, registered nurses and therapists from facilities all over Queensland. Greg is our Property Manager, however his role is spread over a number of areas. He is at the beck and call of over 150 female staff (can be very demanding), 183 residents over two facilities, their families and two very demanding bosses (female of course) and is always there when you need him. Greg’s is responsible for overseeing the property and maintenance of two facilities (Carramar and Kabara) but also manages Workplace Health and Safety, attends Building Committee meetings, writes monthly board reports and much much more. During the recent floods he came in and spent a very wet night digging trenches around the lodges so our residents’ rooms would not flood. But Greg’s biggest asset is that he understands how to calm a frightened dementia resident. He is patient and listens to their war stories as he fixes their wheelchair, even though he has heard the same story before, and most importantly makes the digger feel proud again of everything they did to serve their country. He will compliment a female resident on the lovely brooch she is wearing and make her feel like a giggling teenager again. “Greg, a quiet achiever, is an incredible person and he makes a difference every day in our residents’ lives” said Sandra Gunner, Group Care Manager.

health How’s your “core and pelvic floor?”

COOROY RAG

WITH Mother’s Day fast approaching, it is timely for all women to have a think about the health of their “core and floor”. The “core” muscles, refers to the deep muscles of the abdomen and lower back which have a stabilising role in the body and help to maintain a good posture. In addition to this important function, in women who are pregnant or have had a baby, they are vital for minimising the strain placed on the lower back while pregnant, and help to re-gain abdominal tone post pregnancy. A lot of women perform sit-ups diligently, but still have the tell-tale “pot belly” in the lower abdomen due to the lack of tone and endurance in the core muscles. The deep abdominal “core” muscles do not just return to normal function after they have been stretched, cut (caesarean section) or inhibited by moderate to severe back pain. They need specific exercises which can be taught to you by a physiotherapist or other suitably qualified fitness professional. The up-side to getting your core muscles working again is that the overall tone of your abdomen will improve, along with your posture. The other essential health area for women to be aware of is their pelvic floor. Most women have heard of pelvic floor exercises but aren’t exactly sure of what they need to do and if they are doing it correctly. There are also some myths surrounding whether or not they should be performed while pregnant. The pelvic floor muscles are a sling of muscles which run from the tail bone at the back, through to the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. The openings for the bladder, womb and bowel, all pass through the pelvic floor muscles, which are essential for the optimal

functioning and support of the pelvic organs. Weak pelvic floor muscles can develop for numerous reasons, including pregnancy, childbirth, hormone changes, straining to pass bowel motions and chronic coughing. It is essential for all women, regardless of their age, to understand how to correctly perform a pelvic floor contraction, and ensure that they exercise the muscles regularly, especially when pregnant and following the birth. Like any muscle, if you don’t use it, you lose it. This is even more important as we age, as the hormone effects contribute to muscle weakness. Weak pelvic floor muscles can contribute to prolapses, incontinence and urgency symptoms in the bladder and bowel. The “core” and “floor” (pelvic floor muscles) work together to provide a support network to the trunk from around and below. Squeezing up your pelvic floor while you are training your core muscles can assist the core muscles to work. However, if you suffer from pelvic floor weakness or incontinence, it is important to ensure you are performing an adequate pelvic floor contraction before doing core exercises, otherwise, more strain can be placed on the already weak pelvic floor. The good news is that pelvic floor weakness and incontinence can often be managed by a physiotherapist who has had extra training in assessing and treating conditions of the pelvic floor. Core muscle exercises can be provided by a physiotherapist, or suitably qualified health/fitness professional. If you have any concerns about your “core and floor” please contact an appropriate health professional. Rebecca Steele co-owns Hinteractive Physio in Cooroy and can be contacted on 5442 5556.

MICHELLE Vercoe from Countryside Realty has been a long time supporter of the Cancer Council and this year has decided to host a morning tea. Michelle approached Nicole and Michael Dodt from Jamaica Blue to ask for support to hold the event at Jamaica Blue and they have jumped onboard wholeheartedly. The day is Thursday 24 May from 10am to 11am and the cost is $10 per head. Nicole will be making a selction of cupcakes, muffins and scones. Raffles put together by Michelle will be held on the day and any donations will be greatly accepted. You can prepurchase tickets from Countryside, Jamaica Blue or just turn up on the day. Get a group together for this worthy cause or come and join a friendly table. It’s rare these days to know of anyone who hasn’t been touched by Cancer and together we can raise money to help in the research to understand more about this disease. Michelle can be contacted for more details or for donations on 0408 949 890.

PSYCHOLOGIST, Carmen Southam says she often meet people who are foreign to the concept of ‘self care’. “Failing to self care is not gender or age specific and seems born of the belief that life and personal satisfaction comes from ‘doing’ for others. Self care often fails to be scheduled into daily life, the benefits of just a little self care, can positively affect physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well being,” says Carmen. “I challenge you to

allocate 30 minutes a day to engage in some self care activities. Here are a few ideas: • Sit out in the garden with a cup of tea or coffee and read a book or magazine, or write in your journal, perhaps list 3 things you are grateful for in your life. • Have a bath, surrounded by candles with soft music playing, while the kids are at school or after they have gone to bed. • Go for a walk, take the dog if you have one, or ride a horse, enjoy nature. • Listen to a relaxation

CD while baby is taking a nap. • Commit to a hobby – most people have a “something I always wanted to do” clause somewhere in the back of their mind. Start slowly, dedicate a ‘little’ time to your hobby. I’m a psychologist dedicated to assisting people toward good mental and emotional health, resilience, healthy self esteem and personal empowerment. Spending time caring for ‘you’ can go a long way toward sustaining psychological wellbeing and can have a positive effect on all aspects of your life. Make a start by nurturing yourself today.” For issues relating to depressed mood, anxiety, trauma, relationships or parenting, to mention just a few, please contact your GP for a psychology referral or call Carmen on 5472 0307 (see ad on page 24).

Looking for two homes and a great shed

NEED a granny flat? Looking for somewhere to run your business? Want to be close to town but without neighbours peering in? Or are you just looking for a good well built home on an easy care gentle half acre plus? This could be just the trick for you and your family. Hidden from the road down a quiet country lane, the main house is a dependable raked ceiling brick structure with open plan living and kitchen and a second living or tv lounge adjacent. The main bedroom naturally has an ensuite and all rooms have good built in robes. Outdoors the verandas run the length front and back with a timber framed all weather gazebo to the back for BBQ’s and sundowners. Hidden on the level rear garden sits the council approved studio. Sporting its own ensuite too, this could work well as a granny flat, home business, teenage retreat or even generate an income with a tenant. For those who need more room for their toys, the approximately 70m² shed has room for multiple vehicles and still enough left over for a substantial workshop. Further storage lock ups sit adjacent. The sellers future plans have changed and they are so motivated to sell that they will consider all offers prior to auction. $399,000 43 Reserve Street, Pomona. David Lafferty of Hinternoosa.com.au, 0410 445 918 or 5447 7000.

LOOKING for a character filled country getaway? Do you appreciate the 140 metre treetop elevation over what could be described as your very own private botanical gardens with Whip Birds and Kookaburras as neighbours? Set on almost 17 acres of landscaped forest with a cleared paddock adjacent to the home, your Cathedral ceilinged timber pavilions offer peaceful country living, the quiet resonance of timber construction, a parents’ retreat in the main pavilion with mezzanine office and picture window surrounded ensuite opening to sunshine dappled nature. Your guests are independently accommodated in the sec-

ond pavilion with three bedrooms, their own bathroom and open plan living space. Generous timber decks and paved courtyards connect the two structures which overlook the in ground concrete pool and BBQ area. Garden and forest walkways interlace the grounds and lead to the open paddock that would comfortably keep a small horse or pony. All this only ten minutes to Eumundi, ten minutes from Cooroy and a further fifteen minutes to the Noosa River. Please call or email us for further information. $569,000 167 Old Ceylon Rd, Cooroy. David Lafferty of Hinternoosa.com.au, 0410 445 918 or 5447 7000.

Value for money EVERYBODY is singing the same tune these days “We want extraordinary value for money!” We hear it all the time, from buyers in all price ranges. This property is guaranteed to get your toes tapping and your heart racing. 36 lush & elevated acres with a creek close to Lake McDonald, and only minutes to Noosa or Cooroy. The large home currently equates to 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, purely because this suited the current owners. This is not the typical image which instantly springs to mind when you say 2 bedrooms. It’s a BIG HOUSE! Everything is spacious, the kitchen is probably better than the restaurant you visited last

week! Cathedral ceilings, wide walkways & a massive built-in laundry with room for multiple freezers, & craft activities, plus a large open plan dining and lounge make living here a pleasure. A guest bedroom and spacious bathroom are also included on the ground level. The entire 2nd level is devoted to the master bedroom and includes large ensuite, private decks and his and her walk in wardrobes. This attractive house rendered and has wide covered pathways and could easily be extended if required. The industrial shed is massive, 17m x 13m with 3 phase (U/G) power, hydroponics equipment and 1 single rotating centre pole.

This property will astound you with the extensive landscaping and terraced lawns. Hundreds of large inca style blocks and tropical plants and palms gives you the “I’m on holidays” feeling. If you have any doubts that this property is amazing value, simply search the net for vacant land of similar size anywhere near the beaches on the Sunshine coast. This is a large land holding, but maintenance is confined to a few acres of cleared land near the house and shed. The natural forest is home for wild deer, wallabies plus other family favorites, and creates a 100% privacy buffer to the outside world. There is really only one question, “Within 10 years would you believe what you could have secured this brilliant property for right now?” A sustainability declaration is available by contacting the agent. $769,000 Paul Bielby, Countryside Realty, 0437 346 256

Community Bank helps Cooroora United kick new goals in 2012 IT was a tough start to the season for Cooroora United Football Club. Their storage shed was flooded twice by the incredible rain in January and February, but things have been a lot more positive in recent weeks. All the club’s teams are playing well and the club’s bank account has gone up a little bit too. This week, the manager of Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Fiona Hutchings was delighted to handover a $2,500 sponsorship cheque to Cooroora United Football

Bendigo Bank Cooroy Manager Fiona Huchings handed over the $2,500 sponsorship cheque to Cooroora United Football Club President Steve Standish Club President, Steve Standish. Steve said that while the cheque will help the whole club, it will also renew the Community Bank’s sponsorship of Cooroora United’s ladies’ team. Having enjoyed some success in recent years, the ladies have built the 2012 team through the club’s junior ranks and are looking forward to some great results in the weeks ahead. “We have really appreciated the sponsorship from the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank in recent years, as it allows us to plan for projects that will see the club continuing to offer such great facilities for all lovers of the ‘World Game’,” he

said. Fiona said the Cooroora United sponsorship continues to be a great fit for both parties. “I think everyone knows of the wonderful club here at Cooroora United. I have really enjoyed watching some home games in the past few seasons and I’m looking forward to cheering them on again in the cooler months ahead. We hope this sponsorship helps the club score some more goals in 2012.” Fiona said. Anyone looking to become involved with Cooroora United can do so by contacting the club through any of the numbers on its website: cufc.org.au.

AFL season is well and truly underway with Pomona, Cooroy & District AFL once more in full swing. Seniors had a great start to the season with a crushing victory over long time rivals the Gympie Cats. The young legs along with a few wise old heads combined for a score of 138 to 20 in the Demons favour. The flag was presented to the team for their grand final win of last year! Unfortunately the following week against a strong Glasshouse side the boys came out a bit unprepared and got blown away in the first quarter by 7 goals. They then rallied around Blake Magin and fought back for the next 3 quarters to lose in the end 79 to 35. The old boys (Masters over 38) are still going hard and have put up a good showing against Hervey bay at home followed by a close loss away to Bribie Island. Emphasis is

more on having fun (and a beer or two) but still the competitive spirit comes out and plenty of arguments about final score! Juniors are busy training every Tuesday and Thursday nights, numbers are good but always looking for more so come along. U8’s and U10’s season has begun and they have already had a couple of rounds of footy, a carnival at Maroochydoe 2 weeks back and a Friday night game under lights last week. U12’s and U14’s are looking good this year and at the moment are going through the grading games each Sunday to decide wether they play div 1 or div 2 this year! Auskick has just begun and is running each Sunday from 8:30 till 10:00 at the club (don’t forget rego is valid for the whole year so if you have already signed up at school you can come along or if you sign up now its valid till end of 2012 for just $60).

A golden performance by young guns sion. Connor Jones continues to step it up a gear with each fight as he also continues his winning streak. Connor now has his sights set on making the World Youth Titles selections in September. A win there will see him represent his country in Thailand in October. “I am so proud of our juniors, these kids are proving to everyone that you get out of this sport, what you put in. They never miss a training session and always put in 100%. They have made a pretty big impres-

The Impact crew travelled to Brisbane to compete at the two day tournament held at the Acacia Ridge Hotel. This tournament is all about show casing the sports up and comers.

The boxers competing must of had between 015 fights. Cian Jones was forced to work hard for his gold medal, having to firstly win his semi final fight on Saturday & then fight for gold on Sunday. A top effort for a lad that was making his boxing debut. Ben Cameron Hands continued on his win-

ning way, proving to be way to slick for his opponent & Sam Cameron Hands put in his best performance to date when he dominated his more than worthy opponent. Daniel DeGiorgio fought a tough toe to toe bout also. Daniel stepped up a weight division to win a tough fought unanimous deci-

sion on the boxing scene already, but this weekend they made everyone in attendance stand up & take notice. We have been working on a few different things in the gym of late & this week end each one of these kids proved that they have been able to step up to the next level. They will now start their preparation for the S/E Qld Titles to be held on May 26 at the Beenleigh Tavern. A big thank you again goes out to our travelling supporters! You guys rock,” said coach Mark Evans said.
