Joining forces for flood victims TEWANTIN Noosa Lions Club and LiveLife Pharmacies across Queensland have joined forces to help those in need. With a shared desire to help those in the community who find themselves struggling in the wake of the recent local flood devastations the partners have developed care packs of goods for distribution by local services working with families as they recover. The partnership was celebrated this week at Cooroy when LiveLife Pharmacies CEO Clint Coker met with those instrumental in the project. Full story, page 2

Last bank calls quits on Pomona BY ALEX PURCELL BENDIGO Bank customers are “ticked off” after the community bank closed its Pomona branch “without warning”. The Community Bank Pomona Branch, which used to open three days a week on Station Street, closed permanently in April, leaving customers to travel to Cooroy or Tewantin for face-to-face banking. Local businessman, Stephen Hilditch, said

that no one was advised that Bendigo Bank was going to close the Pomona branch, leaving a void in the community. “In January they said Covid was making things hard for them, regarding finding staff and so forth. And three months later, they closed the doors without a word. “We’re all ticked off. They’ve forgotten about community. Community is about passion and involvement. It is not about

an elderly lady standing in front of her local bank reading a sign that says ‘We’re closed permanently’ and saying, ‘What am I going to do? I don’t have a car. How am I going to get to Cooroy?’ “Worst still, they’ve closed the ATM. We can’t even get money out.” A Bendigo Bank spokesperson told the Cooroy Rag that the Community Bank Pomona Branch had been temporarily closed since

January, largely due to staffing difficulties, and after a review of the branch, the “difficult decision” was made to close the branch permanently. “Following a review of the branch, which considered the changing banking habits of our customers, fewer in-branch transactions, a growing preference for mobile lenders and mobile business bankers, and the relative proximity of Community Bank Cooroy Branch, the Board of

Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited made the difficult decision to permanently close the Pomona branch and cease operation of the ATM. This decision has been supported by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. “Alternative locations for the ATM were explored, but unfortunately, did not progress. Face-to-face banking can be conducted at Community Bank Cooroy or via the Bank@Post service at Australia Post

LPO, Pomona. Alternatively, customers can transact as normal at any ATM or Bendigo Bank branch, via internet banking, our mobile app or via phone banking on 1300 236 344.” For Stephen, it was a personal affront. When ANZ closed their Pomona branch in 2014, Stephen held a meeting between the Pomona Community and Bendigo Bank at the Pomona Bowls Club. Continued page 2

Lions and LiveLife care packs for those in need TEWANTIN Noosa Lions Club has partnered with LiveLife Pharmacies across Queensland to distribute personal care packs to those in need. The personal care packs include items such as toiletries, sanitary items and baby products to support families affected by the recent local flood devastations. LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy Owner/Manager, Jacqueline Meyer said that combined, Cooroy and Pomona LifeLife Pharmacies donated close to $5000 worth of goods. “Toothpaste, shampoo, razors, baby formula, essential nutrients, skincare, rehydration products, dummies, we donated a range of

toiletries, sanitary items and baby products for the care packs.” The care packs will be packed by Lions and distributed through various Lions Clubs, community groups, Councils and with the support of Queensland Police Domestic Violence Officers over the next two months. Tewantin Noosa Lions Club Coordinator for the project, Michael Roach, said their Club is excited about this partnership with LiveLife Pharmacies.

“From our earlier partnership some years back, our Club received many emotional emails from recipients expressing gratitude for the items received when funds and crisis had impacted daily living for them and their children.” LiveLife Pharmacies CEO, Clint Coker said, this is LiveLife Pharmacy’s second joint venture with Lions and they are “very happy” to again contribute to those most in need. “I welcome this

partnership with Lions given the fantastic work they do in the many communities they serve throughout Queensland. “We are very happy to again contribute to their worthy humanitarian assistance program on behalf of not just the communities we serve directly but those most in need. “It’s a comfort knowing that in turn, if our immediate community was in need, Lions Clubs across Queensland would reciprocate.” Clint said participating pharmacies throughout Queensland donated over $30,000 worth of product. "We would like to thank our suppliers and participating LiveLife

“We thought we’d have 30 maybe 40 people attend. We had 130," he said. “Then Bendigo Bank Branch Manager, Geoff Edwards, and I walked the streets and got all the businesses to change over to Bendigo. “Now Bendigo has just upped and left these people and businesses. Businesses now have to find staff to drive to Cooroy to do their face-to-face banking. It might be close but it's still 12 minutes there and back as well as the time to find a park.” Pomona & District Chamber of Commerce President, Phil Moran, said the bank was a vital component of business life.

“It allowed retailers to bank takings overnight rather than keeping them locked in drawers and safes in backrooms of cafes and shops.” The Bendigo Bank spokesperson said that the team at Community Bank Cooroy will continue to support customers with all current and future banking, lending and other requirements for financial services. “Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 5pm. Community Bank Cooroy is located 10 minutes from Pomona at 36a Maple Street Cooroy.” But Phil said that from a Chamber perspective, they fear that if people travel to places outside Pomona for their banking, “they will shop in those

towns and buy petrol there, further eroding a local economy that has fared fairly well during the Covid pandemic”. Phil said he was surprised when the branch closed. “Bendigo Bank is a member of the Chamber, so I am surprised that the PDCC did not get a prior warning of Bendigo’s closure decision, nor any formal request to seek more business support.” “In managing COVID-19, the banks remained open as an essential service because they are. We were just coming out of those times and now we are hit with this.” The Bendigo Bank spokesperson said that the bank has informed Pomona customers of the

closure and will continue to support the community through sponsorship initiatives. “The Bank has written to Pomona customers informing them of this decision and further communicated this change via SMS and posters at the branch. “The Community Bank network, operated by Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited, will continue to support the Pomona community via their sponsorship program, from our Cooroy location. “The Bendigo Bank 'King of the Mountain' will once again run in July 2022 and funding may also be considered for other initiatives across the district.”

Pharmacy stores. LiveLife Pharmacy is proud to support various community organisations and initiatives as part of its Community Support Program.” Jacqueline said any local non-for-profit community groups can apply for donations from LifeLife Pharmacy. “Every month, we conduct our Community Support Program, which gives money to local non-for-profit community groups. “This program has been running for three or four years now and during that time, LiveLife Pharmacy as a group has donated $500,000 to groups. “If you are a local non-for profit, drop into LiveLife Pharmacy Cooroy or apply online.”

BOUQUETS & BRICKBATS BOUQUET to Robbo at Mitre 10 for always being on hand and a wonderful help, no matter what it is you need. BRICKBAT to Noosa Shire Council. Not only do the toilets at Hastings Street Surf Club stink, right in the middle of school holidays they decided to close the outside showers! Surely this work could be done outside the holiday periods. BRICKBAT to the people who brought their dogs to the new playground in Cooroy. I'm a dog owner but please! Male dogs pee everywhere and female dogs squat everywhere. Surely this should be a place where children can run free without risking a dog dropping?

Playground brings business to Cooroy BY ALEX PURCELL COOROY’S highly-anticipated multi-million dollar playground opened on April 13, just in time for Easter. The Hinterland Adventure Playground officially opened one year after construction began and three weeks earlier than planned. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said the new Hinterland Adventure Playground is a great asset for the Shire. “Council is enormously proud of what has been achieved in Cooroy and the smiles, crowds and hive of activity prove what an awesome playground it is.” “I think the finished product shows just how important this is to not only the residents and visitors, but to the economy of Cooroy and the Hinterland. “It’s such an iconic facility that offers plenty of variety to children of all ages and abilities,” Cr Stewart said. Hundreds of eager children and their families gave the park a test run over Easter and judging by the comments on Council’s Facebook page, the consensus is unanimous - it’s a winner. “Well done! We loved our visit today. The all-abilities flying fox and the ramp into the water feature were our favourites,” Libby

It was smiles all around at the long-awaited opening of the adventure playground at Cooroy. Photo supplied by Sunny Coast Photos.

Doherty said. “It's an awesome park. Well done Noosa Council,” Vicky Hey said. “Amazing Noosa Council! Thank you for creating such a wonderful space,” Sarah Brown said. Many local businesses are in agreement, after being “busier than usual”.

Fika Cafe owner Eva said while it was hard to decipher whether it was the playground or the holidays, they had “definitely” been busier. “It’s probably a combination of all of that, plus interstate travel, but I think we'll be able to tell in the coming weeks.”

Sunshine Mitre 10 Store Manager Robbo McInnes said that the Saturday when the playground opened was one of their “biggest days of trade ever”. “The customer count and the dollars were huge on that day," Robbo said. “The playground brought a lot of people into town that weekend and they spent, which is great.” Cooroy Supa IGA owner Peter Zipf said that there are a lot more people around town since the playground opened. “Town is going gangbusters," Peter said. "The playground has increased the number of people in town. "There are a lot more vehicles. "The car park behind the IGA is always full.” The Hinterland Adventure Playground at Marara Street in Cooroy is open from 6am to 6pm every day. The playground comprises a variety of play zones, from quiet spaces to active adventure play zones. Facilities include water play, all-inclusive flying fox and swings, natural and rock play areas, sandpit, open green spaces, a quiet retreat area, a sensory garden, tunnels and a mounded viewing area. Each play space is linked via

formal and informal pathways, playful steppers and small trails through the landscape. Facilities include several picnic and BBQ areas, informal seating, and an accessible amenities block featuring a “Changing Places ” accredited change room with a hoist and adjustable table. There are also shaded areas, perimeter fencing and disabled car parking bays. The Hinterland Adventure Playground is for children and adults of all abilities with the following rules applying: • Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. • Rubbish must be disposed of thoughtfully or taken home. • For the water play area, Council asks that all babies or children who ordinarily wear nappies wear aquanappies, that no glass bottles or containers, or smoking are present in the vicinity and that care is taken with surfaces that may be slippery or hot. • Dogs are permitted and must remain on a leash and be kept away from the play equipment • Dog owners are responsible for their dogs and must ensure they do not pose a risk or cause a nuisance to other people or other dogs.

Less Covid restrictions means more time for road policing Sergeant Mal Scott Cooroy Police FOR the past two years a great deal of pressure has been put upon police resources due to the onset of the COVID virus, with many police officers required to be re-deployed to the various COVIDrelated duties. This has impacted our ability to maintain an overt police presence on our roads and in effect deter unsafe and dangerous driving behaviours. Police enforcements activities such as Random Breath and Drug testing, Speed Detection sites and Compliance Checks with the Australian Design rules are all very successful ways that we, as police officers, seek to the keep the community safe and prevent serious and fatal traffic crashes. The fear of being caught and fined and the possible loss of licence are ways in which we seek to change driving behaviours. In this manner, police being present on the road and seen to be proactively enforcing the road rules are very important strategies to reduce road trauma. The fact that police have not been visibly present on our roads for a considerable amount of time has negatively impacted the rates of serious and fatal traffic crashes. With that said, expect to see an increased police presence on our roads in coming months. If you have grown accustomed to “chancing it” by having that extra beer or two, or sitting just that little bit more above the speed limit, then fair notice is given that your chances of being caught have dramatically increased.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT A Cooroy resident has recently become a victim of crime and unfortunately it was a crime that could have easily been avoided if the person’s car and ignition keys were not left open and accessible. In the early hours of the morning, a young offender from Maryborough crashed his car on the outskirts of Cooroy before skulking into Cooroy, looking for a car to steal, thus coming across the unlocked car with the ignition keys inside. A crime spree then commenced, with numerous offences committed including burglary, evading police and dangerous driving between the Sunshine Coast and Maryborough. Some excellent work by local Cooroy Police, Forensic Police and CIB Detectives have identified a suspect and an early arrest is expected. It is pleasing to note that our Street Safe Cameras again played a large part in the investigation of this matter, providing crucial evidence that enabled police to solve this crime and prevent future crime. Once again, and I know I sound like a broken record but, “lock it or lose it.” It’s honestly that simple. Criminals look for easy

targets. That same criminal would have tried 20 car doors before finding the one that was unlocked. I know we live in an amazing and safe place, and it’s very easy to become complacent. However, if you or your property is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and not properly secured, you can easily become a victim of crime.

BLUE LIGHT DISCO IS BACK

The Cooroy Police Blue Light Disco is starting up again after the Covid restrictions were lifted, with the next disco set for the May 14, 2022. The disco runs from 6pm to 8.30pm at the Cooroy RSL Hall and a great night is once again expected.

THANKS TO SES!

And lastly - a huge thank you to the men and woman of the Cooroy SES, who volunteer their services each and every time with a smile on their faces. Dragging themselves out of bed at 3am in the morning to set up road diversions for the Anzac Day Dawn Service and Main Parade is a thankless task, but one for which the Cooroy Police and the Cooroy Community should be very thankful.

Change at the top of hardware store

SUNSHINE Mitre 10 Store Manager Robbo McInnes is moving on. The well-known face in the Cooroy store is moving into a new role in the company. Robbo said he will be working in store development and inventory. “My home base will be the Nambour store, when I’m not off doing other things.” Robbo has been at the Cooroy store for two and a half years. “This is my second stint here. Cooroy is a wonderful town, with lots of loyalty.” Robbo said Covid really cemented customers’ loyalty to their “little hardware store”. “Covid brought the loyalty back into the town. During Covid, customers realised that our store is equal to anyone else, just a little smaller but can they access anything they want. So business is thriving.” The Gympie resident has been with Mitre 10 for 25 years, and while he won’t be around the Cooroy store anymore, he will still be around Cooroy on occasion. “I have a lot of friends in town.” Replacing Robbo as store manager is Tony Northey. Tony first worked with Robbo in Buderim in 2010, and then was his secondin-command at the Kunda Park store in 2019. While Robbo said he didn’t have the final say, he did suggest Tony be his replacement at Cooroy. Tony said he is excited to be working in the Cooroy

Council dog-flips on playground rule NOOSA Council has revised the rules regarding dogs in the new Hinterland Adventure Playground. Originally, only assistance dogs were permitted in the new multi-million dollar playground. However, Council is now allowing all dogs in the park, as long as the owners are responsible for their pets and ensure that they do not “pose a risk or cause a nuisance to other people or other dogs”. “Dogs must be leashed in public areas and kept away from play equipment. They cannot be left unsupervised, such as tied to a fence or bench, and owners must ensure that they clean up and dispose of any dog ‘business’ in the bins provided,” is the wording of Noosa Council’s rules. But not everyone is happy about the change.

Cooroy-raised Mum, Holly Atkinson said dogs shouldn’t be allowed in the playground for safety and hygiene reasons and should have a separate fenced area on site. “I saw a dog getting excited about going for the flying fox while I was at the new Hinterland Adventure Playground recently and it reminded me of my niece about 10 years about, who was brutally attacked by a dog while on a flying fox. The dog had jumped and pulled her off and she was mental and physical scarred for life. “In playgrounds with dogs, a flying fox is a safety risk. Gympie doesn't allow it. Instead, they fence off the grass and call it a dog park. Fence off the old park and call it a dog’s park. “The other issue is the

water. Dogs are going to want to go in the water park and that is a health concern of its own. And don't get me started with dog poo. We already struggle with pet owners not picking poo up, I don’t want my baby walking around in diarrhea poo that can't be picked up or hosed or dog’s pee. It's not like they have someone there policing it. Yes, they have cameras but they aren't going to book each and every dog owner who lets their dog in and doesn’t follow the rules,” Holly said. Council encourages responsible pet ownership and is continually reviewing the operation of the playground. What do you think? Are you for or against dogs being permitted in the new Hinterland Adventure Playground?

A DEVELOPMENT for four apartments, a convenience store and five commercial tenancies on Diamond Street in Cooroy is “progressing”. RG Strategic, the town planners for the development, managing director, Russell Green, said that they are taking the next steps with the applications necessary for the development of the “old Energex site” at 6-10 Diamond Street, Cooroy. “We’ve moved to the next step. We have the MCU approval, which is for use, the general footprint of the building, car park and landscaping.” “We’ve now prepared the operational works application, which is for stormwater, driveways and cutting into the block. This will allow all aspects of the development to be finalised by Council and enable the

project to go forward.” The development, which aims to provide a shopping option for the eastern side of the railway, was first announced in the Cooroy Rag in February 2021, with work expected to begin this year. But Russell said that, with developments such as this, there are five approvals required before work can commence. “It is never just one approval. There are about five, and you have to get one before you can get the next one. Now we have the MCU. We’re hoping to progress the operational works’ application into Council within six weeks.” “The engineering team in Council is a very good team to work with. Once Council has the application, it will take them about 12 weeks to assess it, after which, we should have all

the approvals necessary for the developer to be able to commence civil works if they choose to.” As well as a convenience store and five commercial spaces on the ground floor, there will be four residential apartments on the top floor, overlooking Diamond Street. The development will have a maximum height of 8m, and the external colour palette (including roof and fence) will fit in with the Cooroy heritage theme of muted environmental tones and timber, to reflect the character of Cooroy. A total of 42 car parking spaces, including four covered parking spaces for the residential units and four motorcycle spaces, will be provided behind the development, with access from Diamond Street and a 2m wide pathway connecting to Diamond Lane.

Exhibition draws on four decades at the easel BY GRAEME WILSON TEWANTIN artist Rose Barry was embarrassed at the quality of her first painting but she persevered and now continues to hone her skills after 40 years at an easel. A late starter in art, Rose’s earlier years were spent “doing shorthand and typing and dressmaking and that sort of thing” followed by a career as a high school teacher and then raising four children. “So, it took me quite a while to get around to painting. It was something I felt I’d missed out on as I was always so busy working and child rearing,” she said. “Then when I did finally try to paint, I couldn’t believe how bad the first painting was. I thought any Year 3 child could do better than that. I felt really embarrassed about how terrible it was.” But that shaky start just made Rose more determined to succeed and she took about three months of weekly watercolour lessons until her teacher moved on. She then decided she would just have to carry on herself, so bought some oil paints and set about teaching herself more “which worked out reasonably well”. To judge for yourself just how far Rose has come since that early setback, visit an exhibition of her work at the Cooroy branch of the Bendigo Bank from May 9 to June 10. Rose is extremely grateful to the bank for giving local artists the opportunity to display their work. “I think it’s a wonderful idea that the Bendigo Bank is opening up its venue as an art showcase for local artists,” she said. It’s very gratifying for the

artist to see their work up on walls and see their paintings as a body of work.” In keeping with the hinterland location of the exhibition, many of Rose’s paintings on display will be traditional realistic landscapes with bushland featuring predominantly. These works take her back to the early days of learning her craft in Alice Springs when she overcame significant obstacles as she ventured out alone into the outback. “Worst of all were the flies. They get behind your spectacles and buzz around and around between your eye and spectacle so that alone was terrible,” she said. “I didn’t know any other artists so I was all by myself out in the isolated bush and sometimes big vehicles would come crashing

through and I felt a bit vulnerable sitting out there by myself. “I used to take my cattle dog but he got bored sitting next to me and he would howl and howl like ‘I’ve had enough now mum and I want to go home’.” At the age of 80, Rose feels that age is no barrier to producing quality artwork. “While you definitely have more energy when you’re younger, I think that through all the miles that I have on my paintbrush I must have more skill now than I used to,” she said. “More understanding of what I’m trying to do – a better understanding of how colours mix and the technical side to painting. “So, in myself I feel I can tackle all kinds of things that perhaps I wouldn’t have tried to when I was younger.”

WITH the recent influx of new residents to the region BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast is urging people to remember to book in for their regular screening sessions. BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Gillian Duffy said in the upheavel of a move it was easy to forget to book a new breast screen. "To encourage women who are overdue for their breast screen to book an appointment, all women who attend for breast screening during May and June will go into a prize draw," Gillian said. "Ten lucky winners will receive a $50 gift card to spend how they choose.” The BreastScreen Queensland service is provided free to women aged 40 years and over. Women aged 50 – 74 are encouraged to have a breast screen every two years, as studies show that this age group benefits the most from regular screening.

Under the strategy, from 1 July 2022, road users caught without a seatbelt will pay $1087, up from $413, and pay $575 for running a red light, up from $413. The cost of a speeding fine will depend on the number of k/ph over the limit that the driver is going. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, said the Queensland Road Safety Strategy 2022-31 aims to reduce the number of lives lost on Queensland roads. “We’ve had a tragic start to the year, with 81 lives lost on Queensland roads already – that’s 81 people who are missing from dinner tables around the state.” "The message is simple. If you don’t want one of these fines, do the right thing on our roads.” Mr Bailey said fine revenue was reinvested into road safety initiatives throughout the State.

THE Noosa District SHS Year 9 cricket team has enjoyed the sweet taste of success and is hungry for more. Victory in the StreetSmarts T20 Sunshine Coast Regional Finals series secured the team’s first silverware in decades and all eyes are now on the prestigious Area Final later in the year against one of the other regional winners. Coach Murray Gordon is confident that if the team continues to work hard in training, it will be well placed to feature highly in the state rankings. Its recent victory came in an exciting and highscoring final against Mathew Flinders Anglican College and was all the sweeter as the team overcame its “underdogs” label to perform outstandingly in both the final and a brave semifinal win over St Andrews Anglican College. In the semi-final, the team was under-strength due to COVID-19 absences, but excellent bowling from Travis, who took four wickets, and strong support from Carys and Nathan limited the opposition to 91.

Opener Joe batted steadily throughout the innings and was well supported by a blazing innings from Riley, who hit 20 runs in the 12th over to clinch an early win. That early finish proved vital as the team had to back up in the final later in the day against a rested Flinders line-up, which came into the game fresh after progressing to the final after its semi-final win the previous week. Flinders batted first and its openers attacked from the start, with one hitting 72 from only 36 balls. This laid the foundations for an impressive total of 178 from the allocated 20

overs, the highest total the Noosa team had to chase in the carnival. But after an inspirational team talk from Coach Gordon about believing in their own talent, opening duo Joe and Angus made a brilliant start, scoring at nearly 10 an over. By the 10th over drinks break, they had accumulated 95 runs without loss. Angus was eventually out for 71 runs, with Riley smashing boundaries once he’d departed. But it was wicket-keeping, talented opener Joe who batted through the whole innings again with 62 runs to set up victory with only three balls remaining.

Local firm is committed to fighting for justice A LEGAL eagle is in Cooroy’s midst, providing South East Queensland with the best possible representation in criminal, traffic, domestic violence and family law matters. Nightingale Law has been running since March 2020 and Principal Laura Nightingale has almost 20 years of experience working in the criminal justice system as an ex-police officer and expolice prosecutor. Laura said what sets Nightingale Law apart from other law firms is that they are very personal and down to earth. “We will try our very best to accommodate every client, so that they can be legally represented for their matter,” Laura said. She said Nightingale Law provided expert legal advice and representation in criminal, traffic, domestic violence and family law. “We appear in the courts on a daily basis and

therefore are experienced in advocacy and the workings of the legal system," Laura said. “We are preferred suppliers for Legal Aid Queensland and can assist those who are unable to afford private legal representation, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. I also volunteer my time with the Sunshine Coast Community Legal Service.” Laura said they also offer fixed fees for criminal, traffic and domestic violence matters so there are no surprise bills to pay at the

conclusion of the matter. Nightingale Law moved to Cooroy in November 2020 and is located, opposite the IGA in Emerald Street “We recently achieved our twoyear milestone and are looking forward to what the future holds for the firm," Laura said. "We love what we do and love our community.” Laura said lawyers are high achievers and demand a lot from themselves. “Given the types of matters that we deal with, it can often be stressful. But at the end of the day, we are deeply committed to achieving the best results for our clients. "Achieving great results for our clients keeps us motivated and provides us with a high level of job satisfaction.” To learn more about Nightingale Law visit: nightingalelaw.com.au..

THE award was bronze but the owners of Pelican Boat Hire at Noosaville are claiming their recent success at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards as a major win for the little guys. After taking gold at the earlier Queensland awards, the business placed third in the Tourism Retail & Hire Services category in the recently celebrated 2021 national awards at the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre. Owners Craig and Louise McGovern are thrilled to be acknowledged among industry heavyweights and are claiming it as a great reward for both themselves and their outstanding staff. “We’re proud of what our gritty little boat shop achieved up against some really glamorous and amazing facilities,” Mr McGovern said. “We thought that’s pretty good – we’re pretty happy with that outcome.” The McGoverns say their award success is testament to a lot of hard work by everyone involved with the 65-year-old business, which the couple have owned for the past five years. “We do a lot of things in the background that we don’t make a big deal about,” Mr McGovern said. “We support a number of charities and you do that for all the right reasons, without making too much publicity about it.” But the awards provided a chance to highlight some of that work, such as the free

boat rides for the disability support service Sunshine Butterflies, which comes to the foreshore each week to use the business as its base. While it has been challenging grappling with the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr McGovern said Pelican Boat Hire and Noosa tourism in general had performed strongly throughout. “We were able to be a good healthy outdoor activity that people from within the drive market could visit,” he said. “Our boat hire business is as much for locals as it is for tourists, with over half of our business being locals. Our business remained really strong throughout.” While there wasn’t an actual drop-off in customers (summer was in fact a “crazy period”), the McGoverns certainly struggled with the uncertainty created by the pandemic. “Of course, there were periods where everybody was locked down and you didn’t know how long that was going to last,” Mr McGovern said. “And you take decisions about keeping staff on without knowing what’s going to happen.” The couple have taken great pride in being able to keep their entire team of about 25 intact. “Some of the casuals got slightly reduced hours but we continued operation to a degree,” Mr McGovern said. “We have a lot of boats so there is a lot of maintenance to be done as they can get

pretty beaten up by users, so it gave us a chance to start restoring some boats and pull them out of service.” This work was undertaken at Pelican Boat Hire’s second site, a marine slipway on Noosa River where the business has diversified upstream – literally. “We do all the main boat repairs on the river in the slipway where the boats come out to be anti-fouled or cleaned or restored or repaired if they’ve had accidents on the bar,” Mr McGovern said. As if COVID hasn’t provided enough challenges, the recent flooding arrived to again test the resolve of the McGoverns and their staff. “We were one of the businesses that went under in the flooding,” Mr McGovern said. “We had about a foot of water around the outside of the building and I lived inside every high tide and pumped water out with seven pumps to minimise the damage. We had six floods in six days.” The concerted effort meant the water inside was kept down to a couple of centimetres, with damage pretty modest compared with the devastation elsewhere. It still meant the business was closed for a week, but after the flood waters receded, there were two days of cleaning and then a reopening. Mr McGovern said the flood, followed by the awards success, highlighted

Pelican Boat Hire's Bronze in the recent national Australian Tourism Awards is being hailed as good news in the wake of the COVID turmoil of recent years.

the rags to riches feeling associated with the ups and downs of the tourism industry. “One Friday night I was in the shop battling flood waters, and two weeks later we’re having success at the awards night,” he said. “As a business, we try to offer some family charm and enthusiasm so for the staff to see that the effort’s actually worth it and gets recognised, is a good thing.” Fellow Sunshine Coast tourism operator, Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat at Montville was also successful at the national awards, winning the Hosted Accommodation section in which it also took gold at the Queensland awards. Owner Xochi Lindholm said it was incredibly exciting to be honoured, taking great pride in winning on the first occasion the awards were hosted on the Sunshine Coast. Queensland Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive and Australian Tourism Awards Chair

Daniel Gschwind said the Sunshine Coast was a perfect example of the outstanding quality and professionalism of Queensland operators. “Many of these tourism operators have faced uncertainty and tremendous difficulties over the past two years. Yet, despite the tough times, they’ve shown incredible resilience and a steadfast commitment to delivering world-class visitor experiences,” Mr Gschwind said. Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the awards’ strong Queensland representation, with 21 finalists, demonstrated the state’s commitment to recovery. “In the last two years, resilient Queensland tourism operators have found opportunities to build back better,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “They’ve strived for excellence in delivering outstanding, visitor-focused experiences and new, worldclass tourism infrastructure.”

Yes, you’re probably thinking, what does this have to do with the Equine family? Well, these grubs are highly dangerous for any mare in foal. They will cause a mare to abort her foal, or the foal can be born with defects. These caterpillars are found Australia wide and we often see these fuzzy creatures moving head to tail through our gardens and on our paths, coming from their host trees, the Acacias, Eucalyptus and white cedar trees. They pupate in the soil and are ingested by the mares when grazing. They pass through tissue and create infection in the uterus and developing foal. In a bad year, the mortality rate can be as high as 10%, and this past wet season has been a perfect breeding time for these grubs. Already a large number of mares due to foal this coming August – September, have lost their foals. At the moment, there is no chemical registered to control them, so if you intend to breed your mare, it will pay to check your property for the pests. The only way you can control them is by physical removal and destruction. These grubs are fully grown during the months of April through to July. With up to 8 shedding cycles, they leave the sack and burrow into the ground for the winter months, then emerge as moths in September and October. They can build large sacks in the trees, so as a horse breeder, you are well advised to seek out and destroy these before the grubs have a chance to leave. Hope this is helpful. Till next month happy trails.

ADRIAN King is no Olympic relay runner, but this year he’s carrying his baton to the finish line and is determined to go out on a winning note. As the curtain falls on his 15 years of conducting the Noosa Chorale, music director Adrian is promising “an evening of beautiful, uplifting music” when they team up again to present Gabriel Faure’s Requiem and Karl Jenkins’ inspiring Stabat Mater at The J at Noosa

Junction on May 27 and 28. The concerts will feature 60 voices, three young soloists and a 50-piece orchestra – with a promise of absolutely stunning music. “I believe the Requiem is truly an inspirational work of art as you can hear from the calm, lightness and serenity throughout the piece,” Adrian said. Unlike many Requiems, he said the work was filled with a sense of warmth and optimism. “It’s impossible not to be moved by its ethereal beauty,” he said. “With Stabat Mater, Karl Jenkins has managed to combine very different styles of music from classical to pop and to draw on different cultures from around the globe.” Adrian is looking forward to working with “three outstanding soloists” – soprano Annika Hinrichs and baritone Timothy Newton who will sing the Requiem, and Tehran-born mezzo soprano Shirin Majd for the Stabat Mater. Born in England, Adrian took up the role of conductor and musical director of the Noosa Chorale in 2007 after migrating a year earlier. He has played a leading role in the success of many performances showcasing the works of legendary composers

including Mendelssohn, Mozart and Brahms. Tickets for the performances in late May are on sale now

Verrierdale history captured in print for all generations BY GRAEME WILSON CALLING all current and former residents of Verrierdale…you’re wanted for a special event at the community hall. With a view to putting the little-known Sunshine Coast community on the map, local Kathy Lynch gathered a team of committed helpers (including husband Phil) a year ago to research and write the History of Verrierdale 1860-1960, and the book launch will be at the hall on May 7. This is the seventh book for editor Kathy but she’s determined to highlight that it’s not “her” book. “I don’t want anyone to say this is ‘Kathy’s book’ because it’s not. As the cover says, it was written by the community, for the community – today and tomorrow,” she said. “When we discovered that nothing much was known about how it came to be, we decided that Verrierdale needed its history written down and kept for future generations. “Phil and I had already talked about it but I knew I couldn’t do the book by myself. "I knew that if I didn’t get the locals on board then it wasn’t going to happen.” So at an Australia Day gathering at the hall last year, Kathy started to sound out other locals and the overwhelming response was: “Yeah, let’s do this.” The book honours the role of the traditional owners, the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi people, but really takes up the story from the arrival of European settlers in 1860 and the century that followed. “Because of the size of the project we had to cut off somewhere, and 100 years seemed like a good cut-off point,” Kathy said.

Kathy Lynch with her husband Phil and a copy of History of Verrierdale 1860 to 1960 book released this month.

She hopes that in future another keen Verrierdale resident will take up the challenge to write a followup book from 1961 onwards. “One of the kids around here now will probably be best placed to do that,” she said. A grant from the Sunshine Coast Council went a long way to paying for the costs of the initial print run of 500 copies, with all 360 current ratepayers in Verrierdale to get a free copy, leaving roughly 100 copies available for sale at $20 each. “We’re not in it to make money, we’re in it to make history visible,” Kathy said. She is confident the remaining copies will sell quickly, with enquiries already coming in from former residents who have moved on, many of them to Cooroy. While many families have left, many have also remained. Descendants of pioneering families such

as the Butlers, Hartshorns and Lynchs (not Kathy’s relatives) were a great help in piecing together Verrierdale’s diverse history. Having just received her first copy hot off the printing press, Kathy said she was very excited to share the book with others at the launch day. “It’s been a bit of a challenge, a bit of a nightmare at times, trying to double-check everything. And we’ve made an apology at the front if we’ve got something wrong, but we’ve really tried our damndest,” Kathy said. “And it’s much better than nothing. Whoever writes the next one can fix any mistakes,” she laughed. The book launch on May 7 is 10am for a 10.30am start is a free event with morning tea provided, attendees are asked to register on www. eventbrite.com.au – once on the site, just search for Verrierdale.

MEET THE CANDIDATE

Geoff Williams Australian Labor Party

I’m Geoff Williams and I’m your Labor candidate for Wide Bay. I’m Queensland born and bred, my wife and I have been together for 28 years and live in Bauple, we have a daughter, 2 young granddaughters and 2 kelpies. I’m a Boilermaker by trade and have since transitioned to Crane Driving. I have worked in maintenance, manufacturing, construction, and mining. It’s time that the people of Wide Bay get better representation at a federal level as for too long we have had the LNP taking advantage of this area and bringing nothing to the table until it is election time. We deserve a better childcare system that doesn’t cost you the earth. You deserve a hospital system that has federal funding support and is bolstered by Medicare. No Cashless Debit Card for pensioners. This Pandemic has highlighted how much we have become too reliant on overseas suppliers, we have suffered many shortages and delays by being at the far end of the supply chain. Labor wants to bring manufacturing home to this country so that we can once again have more home-grown manufacturing, and be more self-reliant to become an export powerhouse increasing jobs and building local businesses, adding

to and building a better nation, but most of all that employs locals. Wide Bay deserves more support for our local business that promotes secure jobs that are well paid. The only way is to vote 1 for me Geoff Williams on election day to make me part of the Anthony Albanese Federal Labor Government.

Kelli Jacobi

I am entering this election as the only true independent, because I have done deals with no party or organisation. I am the only candidate who does not have how-to-vote cards, and I give my preferences to no one. I believe like never before, that we can make a difference in this election to turn our country around. The major parties have done nothing for our country for a very long time. The taxation system in this country is not fair, as it is set up to benefit big business and big corporations. We are fast becoming a country with the very rich buying multiple houses and properties, which is driving up house prices, and makes owning a home for most people just a dream. Those on medium wages, who do get into the housing market, have become slaves to keep up with payments. On the lower end, we have people, who are not able to pay their rent or cannot find places to rent and are becoming homeless. We, as a society, cannot continue the way it is going. We are in a housing crisis, a cost-ofliving crisis, as our wages are not keeping in par with the cost of living. I believe true independents are the

We live in incredibly beautiful country with a diverse mix of cultures and quirks that make us uniquely Australian. We're resilient, hopeful, kind, generous and strong in spirit, mostly doing our best to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. I believe we're capable of and deserve so much better than we've come to expect from our government. Broken promises, pleasant lies and blatant corruption are apparently ‘just the way they do business here’. I urge everyone to stop accepting this as 'our norm' and choose very differently this federal election. True leadership should always enhance the lives of those governed, never undermine our unity, fundamental human rights or quality of life. The systemic issues we must resolve to heal our nation are multi-faceted and will take serious strategic planning, time and effort to overcome. My policy considers all facets of Australian life and offers strategies to repair our broken political systems, undo the damage done by decades of compromised governments and then rebuild our beautiful country. My ultimate goal is to help create a truly representative democracy for the enjoyment and benefit of all Australians;

We need a total overhaul 1. 2. The tax system needs to be fair for middle to low income earners 3. People should be able to live on one income 4. Enacting a Bill of Rights that outlaws lockdowns and protects the rights of all Australians will be the United Australia Party’s first task when elected to government. Under a Craig Kelly government, our valued aged pensioners will receive an extra $180 a fortnight, and anyone living or moving more than 200km from a capital city will benefit from a 20% tax concession incentive. Home loan interest rates will be limited to a maximum of 3% for the next five years so that Australians don’t lose their homes. We will pay off the trillion dollar debt that the Labor and Liberal governments got us into, without burdening our communities by introducing a 15% export licence on Australian Iron Ore. A trillion dollars of superannuation will be brought back from overseas investments, and instead invested in Australia to secure our citizens’ economic prosperity. Business owners will be pleased to hear that the United Australia Party will stop provisional tax being paid in advance, before profits have been made, thereby helping them to manage their cashflow. These are just some of the amazing policies that will be introduced under a Craig Kelly government. The United Australia Party is the largest political party

The Australian Values Party is a new independent political party, created and committed to bringing back authentic leadership, accountability and responsibility to our political system and those who are in government. The AVP prioritises candidates with lived experience, focusing on the leadership, planning and teamwork skills of each candidate, appreciating that we must work together within the party and wider Australian Parliament in order to best serve and support all Australians. The AVP has both Heston Russell running for the Senate in QLD and Daniel Williams running as the Candidate for Wide Bay. People across Australia head to the polls on May 21, and I am ready to stand by my record of providing strong representation to achieve results for Wide Bay. In the last few years we’ve faced many challenges, but we’ve supported each other, and there’s much more to be done. I’ve worked to secure infrastructure to help Wide Bay grow, including $3.2 million to upgrade bridges on Cooroy Belli Creek Road, Lawnville Road at Black Mountain, Tablelands Road at Cooran, and Wahpunga Lane at Kin Kin; and $800,000 to upgrade the Cooran – Pomona section of Noosa’s hinterland trails network. I’ve assisted community, sporting, and service groups to build better facilities, including $7,750 to help Cooroora United Football Club to upgrade lights at Cooroy Sporting Complex; $4,998 for PTSD Dogs Australia train volunteers; $3,442 in equipment and signage for Pomona’s Majestic Theatre; and new tech gear for Cooran State School P&C. I’ve worked to improve health and disability services, with $1.5 million to extend Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, and $135,000 for an accessible playground and café at Sunshine Butterflies, and we have recently secured Distribution Priority Area (DPA) status for Cooroy and the Hinterland, making it easier to recruit

The nature-based, all abilities playground has a variety of play zones to suit all energy levels and is already being well used and loved by so many in our community. Speaking of hinterland projects, Council has awarded a contract for replacement of the Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge. First built in 1929 the Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge, situated in Cooroy, is the oldest bridge Council maintains. The new bridge will meet current design specifications and standards with a targeted design span life of 100 years. The Kin Kin Rec Hall remediation work is almost done. It includes repairs to damage caused by bats plus a range of improvements, including a commercial kitchen. We are very grateful to the community who have had input into the improvements. The contract for the renewal of Cooran Horse

Yards has been awarded. Construction is expected to commence within the next two months and will be completed by August, pending timber supply and weather. The layout will be a like-for-like replacement of the existing yards, consisting of two large holding yards and seven individually gated stalls. The renewal will also include work to the external paddock fence, with new front and back gates and restoration to flood damaged sections. On another note, the results of our first ever Liveability Survey are in. Thanks to the 1600 plus people who shared what they care about most in their neighbourhoods and gave a rating of their experience. Noosa Shire neighbourhoods are performing well where it matters most - meeting community members’ values regarding the local economy and environmental sustainability. A sense of community and the natural environment rank highly as strengths of Noosa Shire.

The general condition of public open spaces and walking/cycling paths is also highly valued by the community. The data we have derived will help Council prioritise future investment and works, as well as current budget deliberations. Finally, make sure you’re prepared for severe weather by checking out our Disaster Dashboard and signing up to Noosa Alert for email/text alerts. The Dashboard has up-to-date information such as weather warnings, road closures and power outages, as well as our Emergency Action Guide for practical advice on what to do before, during and after a range of disasters. For more information please visit: www.noosa.qld.gov. au/community/disastersemergencies Until next month, stay safe, Clare

FOR more than 30 years, Cooroy's Amy Gallon has been riding, training and competing with horses in several disciplines including both English and Western riding. Earlier in her career, Amy retrained thoroughbreds and last year she was selected as one of 10 trainers for a coveted new "Race to Ranch" competition, that is organised by Cowgirls Gathering. The inaugural event was held in October 2021 at Kilkivan Equestrian Centre. Amy said that participants were given 100 days, starting on June 1, to retrain a recently off-the-track thoroughbred to compete in a four-phase ranch horse event that comprised a trail obstacle course, reining, cow work and a freestyle section. "Lawrence Sainsbury donated a six-year-old thoroughbred mare to me. Her race name is ‘Kiss N Win’ although she is more affectionately known as Missy.” ‘We picked up Missy five days after her last race. She then had five weeks off before beginning training for the upcoming event in October." Amy said Missy did well at the "Race to Ranch" event in October. "I was really pleased with the way she performed. If it wasn't for my own rider error in one phase of the event, she would've placed very well. She'd also only had 42 rides before the event as I had suffered a nonhorse related injury. Thus I was very happy with her transformation, especially in the ‘cow work phase’. I'd like to take a quick second to thank all of Missy's sponsors for their support through Missy's racehorseto-ranch horse journey. We had an amazing group

of people and businesses supporting us. "To retrain a racehorse to be a ranch horse, which essentially means to perform station work such as going over/through obstacles or gates, reining, roping, working cattle, being exposed to farm vehicles and machinery, requires a lot of groundwork, desensitising and laterals to teach the horse to use their body correctly. It all takes time and I believe if any horse is given a solid correct foundation to their training, they can be successful in many different disciplines, including cow work." More recently, Missy won a number of High Point awards at a ranch show which also had an Off The Track class. "At this recent ranch show, there were different classes such as a trail obstacle course, reining, Western pleasure, horsemanship and ranch conformation. I was very happy with Missy's performance. She won High Point Off The Track Horse, High Point Beginner/ Improver Horse and Rider & Runner-Up High Point Beginner/Improver Walk/Jog Horse.

"Off The Track (OTT) classes are specifically designed for OTT’shoroughbreds and standard breeds, with the OTT class being backed by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission, which oversees the welfare standards of racing animals and the integrity of racing industry participants in Queensland.” "The QRIC are funding grants for eligible organisations to partner with the Commission to promote its animal welfare objectives. These classes are a great way for any OTT horse and riders to start showing or continue to show competitively in a range of different disciplines. It's great to finally see OTTs being recognised and promoted. Many people forget these amazing athletes can be very successful in their life after racing." For riders who are interested in getting into or learning about Ranch Shows with any horse, Amy highly recommends Big Rock Ranch at Brooloo. "Jodie offers mechanical cow/cow work, obstacles, roping and reining pattern introductory clinics as well as group sessions weekly. People can contact her through the Big Rock Ranch Facebook page. I hope to see you all out there one day. It's great fun and a friendly environment." Amy had originally planned to keep Missy and show her in the OTT sections in a range of different shows. However, sadly due to circumstances out of her control, she has offered Missy for sale. For anyone interested in enquiring about Missy, Amy can be contacted on Missy's Instagram page at www. instagram.com/miss_ kiss_n_win/

Award-winning home on a 5900sqm block

How is the market?

rhetoric are always hot talking points for those predicting a fall in the market. One of the only forecasters to predict the Covid property boom, Simon Pressley from Propertyology, suggests a more balanced viewpoint would also consider the impact of $230 billion in household savings, $45 billion in infrastructure spending, low cost home loans, return of international tourism, wage growth, rising rental incomes, high home equity, overseas migration and an abundance of lifestyle buyers to support an overall positive influence on the property market. Simon notes it would take five RBA rate rises just to get back to where interest rates were three years ago, which property owners comfortably serviced. The demographic of buyers in our Noosa Hinterland region is unlikely to see a critical mass of mortgage holders who suddenly struggle when interest rates rise, thus the impact of this one factor on our market is unlikely to be profound. Interestingly, during the 6-year cycle of interest rate increases that commenced in May 2002, the median house price more than doubled in value in over 100 individual Australian cities and towns.

Keeping in mind the number of dwellings listed for sale is also now at an all-time record low, all indications point to a short-term flattening of prices in our local market, likely to be followed by gradual growth later this year with the potential for more rapid growth again in coming years.

IT’S easy to understand how this abundant home took out the illustrious 2008 Housing Industry of Australia (HIA) award on the Sunshine Coast.

THE first quarter of this year has flown by and seen everything from an easing of Covid restrictions, to flooding and an increased cost of living, all adding pressure to the housing shortage in Queensland. An end to this shortage doesn’t look to be in the near future. The question is, how is this impacting the market now and what is ahead? Anecdotally, we are still seeing buyers heavily outweigh available properties, so we are still in a seller’s market. The heat in the market, however, is normalising as the record prices that have been achieved over the last two years start to flatten out. A drop in prices isn’t expected but it is recommended that sellers prepare to be more realistic in their pricing this year or their time on market could be extended. We are seeing buyers transition from the last two years of purchasing with a fear of missing out to now purchasing with a fear of buying wrong. Buyers are becoming more discerning, and it would appear the frenzy has simmered. Given the housing shortage, however, some predict another growth surge is coming. 3228 There are so many variables that contribute to where a market is heading. Interest rate rises, inflation, tighter credit assessment and the upcoming Federal Election

Sprawling peaceful property (60 acres) For Sale

Address: 102-162 Cedar Creek Rd, Belli Park Price: $985,000 Details: 24.56ha (60 acres) Agent: Darren Newton, 0419 725 182

IF buying larger acreage is on your wish list, take a close a look at 102 - 162 Cedar Creek Rd Belli Park. This 60acre (24.56 ha) grazing block is partially fenced, has a sprinkling of mature shade trees and is watered from two dams plus Belli Creek.

Agency: Ron Jeffery Realty

There are some good house sites on the block, including one on the ridge, or at the highest point, in the middle of the block. The block has sealed road frontage to Cedar Creek Rd plus side access from Brads Lane (an unsealed laneway). Featuring large fig trees, excellent native birdlife and easy creek access, the remnant rainforest area along Belli Creek at the rear of the property is just magic. It’s an excellent creek and a peaceful haven. This area stands in stark contrast to the productive grazing land that makes up the balance of the property. The block has been unattended for some time and therefore represents an excellent opportunity for a new owner to make their mark.

63 Calico Creek Road, Calico Creek This 18-acre productive grazing property has long frontage to both Calico Creek and Calico Creek Rd. The creek dominates the landscape & while it is clearly visible from the house and house yard, it’s not a threat in times of flood!
