The free one-day festival offers something for all ages and tastes! The classic cars and WWII army vehicles will start the day off with a parade up Maple Street at 9am. Following up from the School Bands and Little Seeds Theatre, Geckoes Wildlife will present an educational and entertaining

‘hands on’ experience featuring Bumpy the bare– nosed wombat and his native animal friends in the Cooroy Bendigo Community Bank Tent. There will even be an opportunity to get up close with these beautiful natives off stage. After the Welcome to Country presented by Lyndon Davis, the afternoon will kick off in style with live music by Triple Minx, and the return of crowd favourite Andrea Kirwin and her band. The afternoon headline act will be Cooroy’s very own

Isaac McGovern, appearing with a three piece band. Singer, songwriter and multi– talented instrumentalist, Isaac shot to fame on last year’s hit television series, The Voice, where he was coached by Joel Madden. One of the festival’s highlights will certainly be Bubble Soccer: think soccer mixed with bumper cars! Sponsored by Cooroy Supa IGA, tournaments will be organised during the day. As well as the opportunity for anyone interested to give it a go, there will be bubbles

available for all ages. This year’s program includes a free jumping castle for the kids, and they can also get their faces painted and play with some hands-on activities while you check out the artist markets at the Butter Factory. Thanks to Hinternoosa the roof of the library will be home to the ever popular Animal Farm where big and small alike can snuggle up to some very cute fluffy and furry locals. The library will be a hive of activity with yoga, Tai Chi, Music2Grow, Storytime and

Food for Families. The Lego Lounge will be open all day, and in the ‘Pop-Up’ Instagram photo booth with your friends, you can try on the props and post your picture onto Instagram. Of course there will be delicious food stalls to select from, and the many market stalls are sure to have that last minute present for Mother’s Day! There will be something for everyone, with the full Fusion program available at www.cooroyfusionfestival. com.au.

COOROY RAG

It’s a puzzlement You’ve reached the age of 55, and they say that’s the measuring stick, You’re on the downhill side of life, so they’re giving you the flick. You’ve given the Company all those years, gathered all that knowledge, But they’re replacing you with a bright young thing, freshly out of college. He’s got an MBA, three degrees, and other signs of learning, And claims he’ll contribute quite a lot to the Company’s future earning. All that experience you have gathered, the Company doesn’t need it, It’s no use stuck in your ageing head, the computer will supersede it. And who needs old, loyal staff, their brains are as good as dead? So off you go with your super, a sad frustrated life ahead. But if you are a politician, seems a different rule applies, The longer you’re in Parliament, you supposedly become more wise. When you reach, what is called, a very mature age, You become what the Party believes is a venerable old sage. Your experience is to be admired, and universally treasured, The benefits to the Nation, simply can’t be measured. At the age of 65, they say, you’re not even at your ‘use by’ date. But you’ve become a star, an icon, and even labelled ‘great’. They’ll beg you to stay in Parliament, a well-respected figure, But it’s not your wisdom growing, it’s the super and the ego getting bigger. It’s difficult to explain the difference, it’s a matter of perception, And beyond the ordinary person’s understanding and conception. Why, if in business, at 55, your contributing days are over, But in politics, at 65, your future’s acceptably in clover??? You can fool some of the people all the time, and fool all the people some of the time - but you can’t fool your mother.

Tex and Robyn set to retire

FOR the past nearly 20 years Tex and Robyn Pipke have been engaged in the Real Estate business in Cooroy. First as Raine & Horne and for the past twelve years they have specialized in Property Management exclusively. The name, Town & Country Home Rentals is widely known in the Hinterland as well as considerably farther afield. Having both achieved the age of 75, and having satisfied the extra efforts sought by Joe Hockey to stay in the work force Tex said “it is time to have a change of pace”. “We have been blessed to have assembled a terrific group of owners and a very high quality group of tenancies over the years and while it is hard to let it all go, we are pleased that Wythes Real Estate were attracted to our rent roll and have purchased all properties’ managements from us.” “I cannot say enough about the pleasure of working with a keen partner such as Robyn. It is

she who has effectively made the show run. Trust accounting as well as company management, along with tenant interface have so very ably been attended to for many years. “on ya girl”. Tex has been involved in many local groups over his time in Cooroy and still retains his interest in the activities of the Cooroy Lower Mill Board, who have driven the development of the Lower Mill Site precinct next to the CBD, part of the land that now contains the Cooroy Library. “I will continue this important work as we are now adding the administration of the Butter Factory to our list of local projects. Final documents are being prepared with Council and it is expected that management of this iconic building will move to CLMB in the latter part of this year. “The board are all very keen to get going.” So, retirement? I guess it is different things to different people.

Cooroy networking night a huge success Paradise Found

OVER 80 people gathered at the Cooroy State School last night for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s annual networking night. Stories were swapped, new connections were made and everyone had a great evening. “The Cooroy Chamber networking nights are always really popular and

there is an amazing diversity of businesses and organisations that attend. It was a great night and we’ve already had some fantastic feedback from attendees,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor. “The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce continues to go from strength to

strength with over 140 members now and growing. We have a really hard working volunteer executive committee that continue to ensure our members get a lot of value. As well as our networking nights we also host many other meetings and events and also offer our members promotion via the Cooroy

website which gets 10,000 visits per week, the Cooroy Facebook page which has a reach of about 8000 each week, the Cooroy Guide which we are printing 5000 of this year and the Cooroy App which gets about 6000 tab visits per week. It’s all about getting people to think local, support local, shop local

so that we continue to have a strong vibrant community which in turn provides a strong economic base for businesses - it is a win for everyone that way.” For more information about the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce visit www.cooroy. com.au/advertise or email advertising@cooroy.com.au

“That old acquaintance & friendship never be forgotten” A CONVERSATION among friends meeting in Wynnum in 1995 sowed the seed for organising a gathering of folk who had lived in the Cooroy district. In April 1997 after much planning, an event was held at The Holy Cross Heritage Hall in Wooloowin. One hundred past and present residents, relatives and friends from the Cooroy and Eumundi district enjoyed a day of fun and friendship. So much so, that they met again in 1998 and 1999. The year 2000 brought the reunion to Cooroy. It was held at the Cooroy Memorial Hall on Sunday 27th March. “Back to Cooroy Day” has continued to be held in Cooroy every second year with breaks for the State School Centenary

The day involves a lot of talk and laughter and sharing of life experiences. Photo displays of the township and pupils in their school year classes prompt memories. COUNCIL is inviting budding young photographers to enter the Living Smart Landscape and Wildlife Junior Photography Competition for a chance to win $250 worth of camera gear. The competition aims to encourage greater awareness, among under18s, of our natural environment, its significance and beauty. To enter, just submit a picture of: • Native local flora and fauna - plants, flowers, animals and birds. • Native local insects and spiders. • Natural local landscapes, including waterways. Entries can also include pictures that show the connection between people and the natural environment. “It could be someone swimming in a local waterway, or walking the Noosa Trail Network, for

example,” says Noosa Council Sustainability Project Officer Emma Menzies. “Young people are our future and so it’s important we encourage their appreciation for our natural environment and the importance of sustainable living,” says Ms Menzies. “The Living Smart competition is a great way to encourage our youth to take an active interest in these areas, with the chance to win some great prizes,” she says. There are two categories: under-12yrs and 12-17yrs old. First prize is a $250 Camera House voucher for the 12-17yrs category and a $200 voucher for the under-12s category, second prize is a 20-visit Family Swim Pass from Noosa Aquatic Centre (value $225) and third prize is a book pack and $20 Go Card voucher. REMEMBER me? I am Leilani ... Cooroy girl and graduated Noosa District High School in 2009. I was the leader of World Vision Fundraisers and led the 40 hr famine for 4 years. I was the winner of the cultural achievement awards in my High School time. Performing arts leader starring in local productions, the school musical and at the “J”. I was the loudest singer in “Carols in the park” as I have a voice and I need to

be heard. This is my story ... Where am I now? Living in 3rd world country Nepal leading a Women’s Development project. Just 6 weeks ago my whole Australian family were with me in Nepal celebrating the happiest day of my life, my wedding in glorious 300yr old temples - they are now flattened to the ground I am now surrounded by one of the worst Earthquakes the world has experienced. Rice tripled in price, we have sent people to our village to assess the homeless state, as we had a call that of the 60 homes only one still stands. Nepal has admitted it is illequipped to deal with this, and foreign aid is now arriving. A lot remains unknown about the extent of the damage and causalities, and the effects this tragedy will have over the coming months and years. There is prediction of more heavy rain and thundershowers after all it is the start of monsoon, which is likely to only hamper the rescue work. I live amongst the happiest, friendliest open people in the world who have embraced me and my family as their own. What I know is that Nepal is going to need a lot of help, and that the international community needs to empower and support local individuals and organisations to rebuild our neighbourhoods, cities and nation. I am taking action I need you to as well. I am fundraising. All funds donated to me will go directly to help our communities in this difficult time. $5 gives us phone credit we are on the ground connecting missing people, locals and tourists to their families. Bendigo Bank welcomes David to the fold THE Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has welcomed new staff member to Maple Street, with David Lafferty now on board. Branch manager Geoff Edwards said David has been a valuable addition to the team. “David’s positive personality and his strong understanding of our community has been terrific for our branch. He’s already known by so many in Cooroy, so the transition to his new role has been seamless,” Geoff said. For his part, David says he loves that his new role allows him to continue dealing directly with locals. “I’d spent

David Lafferty

twenty-five years working in hotels and event management, followed by over ten years in real estate. It was real estate that brought me to Cooroy and when the opportunity to join the team here came up, I jumped at the chance. My wife has also worked at Cooroy State School for a number of years and we both love the town. Cooroy has a big heart, a great sense of pride and an abundance of community spirit,” David said. Born and raised on the Isle of Cumbrae in the River Clyde estuary in Scotland, David initially spent three months in Austria spreading his wings, but that turned into sixteen years, where he also met his future Aussie wife. “In 1999, we moved to Mel’s home town of Tewantin where we built a house, started a business, got married and had two kids. We then moved to our half acre just outside Eumundi in 2009 where we currently live,” David added. David added he believes the Community Bank branch makes a difference where it’s needed most, locally. “I think our point of difference is our connection with our community and the fact that we work so closely with them, listening and returning profits to where we all live and work “Whether offering quality products and services to locals or assisting local groups, schools and clubs with their endeavours, it all adds up to being part of something bigger. There is a real sense of inclusion and belonging in Cooroy and that is why we are here. Everyone has to bank somewhere, so why not bank with somewhere that’s giving locals and real say and share in its own future?,” he said.

news Conserving your Business Capital – Equipment Loan Geoff Edwards, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy AS your business grows, so do the number of decisions you have to make regarding the finance of your Motor Vehicles, Plant and Equipment etc. The simplest option is to purchase the equipment straight out. This, however, may not be the best use of your working capital and may put undue pressure on your cash flow. While you will still be able to claim the depreciation as long as the equipment is used to generate assessable income, you will not be able to take advantage of any taxation benefits that may otherwise be available to your business. What sort of business equipment can be financed? • cars, utilities and light commercial vehicles • trucks and buses • forklifts, cranes and earthmoving equipment • computing and office equipment • printing, medical and manufacturing equipment • industrial plant equipment Financing business equipment has changed over the years particularly with the introduction of GST which has changed the cost effectiveness of traditional equipment finance for many businesses. Businesses looking to finance equipment should also be aware that some finance products will have certain characteristics which prove more beneficial to them than others. Terms for finance normally range from two to five years and the equipment finance product range includes Finance Lease, Asset Purchase and Equipment Loan. Equipment Loan is the focus of this article and is currently the most popular type of equipment finance. As the taxation and accounting treatments of various finance products may vary, it is recommended you seek independent expert advice before choosing an option.

The Equipment Loan may be attractive to businesses that use cash accounting in their business as it may be able to claim the GST component of the purchase price of the equipment in their next Business Activity Statement (BAS) after the Bank has made payment to the Supplier. Security is provided to the Bank over nominated goods (i.e. various plant, equipment and motor vehicle etc) by way of a Specific Security Deed. In simple terms, this type of finance is structured in the same manner as a property mortgage, with the equipment owned by the business, but allocated as security against the loan. The interest and depreciation components are usually tax deductible provided that the equipment to be financed is used to generate assessable income. If you would like to know more about financing your equipment purchases, please feel free to contact me on 5447 7131. You can also email me at geoff.edwards@bendigoadelaide.com.au

Remembering our ANZACS

Those wonderful nurses At this time when we celebrate ANZAC Day, in prose and sometimes verses, We should never forget those angels, those wonderful caring nurses, Dispensing medicines, soothing gently, with unceasing care, With words of comfort and understanding, in times of pain and deep despair, Cautious with the restless, gentle with the fragile, Freely offering help with a heartening, encouraging smile, Tactful and tolerant with the boorish, with the thoughtless know-it-all, Who considers the nurses’ only duty, is to be at his beck and call, Calming the nervous patient, assuring the fearful ones, Bringing comfort and helpful cheerfulness to the fearful ones, When a man’s heart is deeply depressed and afraid, Caring love and sympathy are gently displayed. In peace and in war, the nurses play a wondrous part, In mending a broken body, a broken mind, a broken heart, Their service, their courage, their tenderness, their fortitude, Earn our admiration, and our deepest gratitude. Lest we forget.

ANZAC Parade in Cooroy

ANZAC 100 Year Commemorative Services were very well attended throughout the Hinterland

THE RSL Commemorative Flame which was carried by Petty Officer Nathanael Ford. Nathanael is a staff member of the Noosa Navy Cadets. Nathanael is honoured that he was chosen to carry the Commemorative Flame when the Troop Train came to Cooroy, and during the Cooroy ANZAC Day parade. Family financial fitness IF your family had to take a financial health test, how do you think you would fare? When it comes to money management, are you confident you have all your ducks in a row, or is there room for improvement? Financial stability is one of the most important things we can provide our families, yet when it comes to money issues many of us prefer to bury our heads in the sand and hope for the best. The following checklist can help all families, regardless of their income, get their budgets back on track and set themselves up for a stable financial future. Financial health checklist for families: Do you have a budget? - It is essential for all families to have a household budget and stick to it. If you spend more than you earn, it can quickly land you on the rollercoaster of debt. Look for ways to reduce spending such as using discount petrol dockets, buying generic brand groceries, taking your own lunch to work and cutting back on take-away dinners. Strategy for paying off debts - One of the biggest threats to family budgets is credit card debt. Credit cards are fine if they are paid off in full each month before interest is incurred. But if there is a large amount of debt sitting on a card, it could be costing you big time as interest rates on credit cards can be as high as 20 per cent or more. It’s important to pay off this kind of debt as fast as possible. To do this, you will need to make more than the minimum repayments each month. If you have several cards maxed-out, consider rolling all the debt in to one low interest-bearing card to save on interest costs. Once you’ve paid off the credit cards, tackle personal loans and the mortgage next. If you can, make extra repayments on your home loan and reduce interest.

Protect your family - It is something we don’t like to think about, but you need to ask yourself how your family would cope financially if you or your partner prematurely died, were injured in an accident or became too sick to work. These days, insurance doesn’t have to be a big drain on the budget. If cash flow is tight, you can get affordable life insurance and income protection through your superannuation. If finances allow, it’s also wise to look into Trauma and Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance. Having an up-to-date will is a must and it’s also advisable to have an enduring power of attorney and advanced health directive in place so someone can make financial or health decisions on your behalf if you are unable to. Have an emergency fund - As a contingency for life’s unexpected expenses, it is essential to have an emergency fund or access to cash through a mortgage redraw facility or offset account. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three months salary in the kitty. This may seem a tall order for most, but it’s worth starting to build this up as a vital resource. Saving for the future - While it’s important to create financial security for your family today, it’s also vital to have a long term plan for the future. A financial planner can help you work out how much you will need to live the lifestyle you want in retirement. They can also assist with strategies to boost your super, such as consolidating multiple accounts to reduce fees and salary sacrificing. We can assist you if any of these areas are of concern to you and your family, or if you wish to discuss any other areas of financial advice. Please feel free to call to arrange a time to see one of our financial planners – 07 5447 7740 or email advice@provisionwealth.com.au

Taking up the challenge

Sponsorship helps Scouts buy tents

THE Duke of Edinburgh Award enrichment program invites young people aged 14-25 to participate in a number of personally challenging activities over a set length of time. At Noosa High the program is run as an alternate educational pathway with students who are at risk of disengaging with regular schooling pgorams. Four NDSHS student teams will complete the 2015 Kakoda Challeng. This is a gruelling team event which requires teams of 4 to complete a 96km trek (length of actual Kakoda trail) in less than 39 hours. The race is conducted in the Gold Coast hinterland in mid-July and attracts over 3000 competitors both domestic and internal. The team needs to raise at least $600 for the Kakoda Charity. The Noosa District State High School Kokoda Challenge Team embarked on its very first night training session without illustrious team leader, Dean McMaster, who was unable to participate due to serious injuries sustained in a cycling accident last weekend. Mr McMaster provided the Kokoda Challenge Team with a motivational ‘pep talk’ prior to their departure , with Year 12 student (and mighty powerhouse) Gabby Hill appointed as group leader for the training session. The group set off at 2:30 PM and 40 kilometers was covered in the 6.5 hour training session. The NDSHS Kokoda Challenge Team is looking for local businesses for sponsorship. If you are able to help out, please contact Dean McMaster: dmcma41@eq.edu.au or NDSHS directly on 5472 2222.

Karl Doss with Sally Clarke (right) and other members of Cooroy Scouts PARENTS and carers are always on the lookout for great new adventures for their kids that are safe and fun. Did you know there is a Scout Den right here in Cooroy? It’s powered by an exciting group of local volunteers and parents and they’re off to an exciting start in 2015. Sally Clarke is the Group Leader and was keen to continue growing the group’s numbers. So last year, she decided to write to the Cooroy Community Bank branch and ask for some financial support. After considering the request, the branch’s Customer Relationship Officer, Karl Doss, made it a night to remember late last month when he visited a Cooroy Scout Group meeting and presented them with a cheque for $1,000. Sally said the timing just couldn’t be better with the plans they have in the coming months. “We’re just so excited about this sponsorship. It’s given us the opportunity

to purchase three new ultralight tents. “Cooroy Scouts will be the first to use the new tents, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the Cooroy Community Bank branch. We now look forward to supporting them the way they’ve supported us. That’s what makes community work,” Sally added. Karl Doss said apart from the daily enjoyment of serving customers in the branch, this is the best part of his job. “It’s our point of difference, and as we generate more profits from our Cooroy Community Bank branch, it means more for organisations just like Cooroy Scout Group,” Karl said. If you would like more information about Cooroy Scout Group, or become a volunteer to help assist or lead some of the Scouts on exciting activities, call Sally Clarke for more information on 0415 984 900 or arrange to visit to the Scout Den at 2 Mary River Road, Cooroy.

COOROY RAG

Researcher hopes the changing face of Cooroy will benefit other communities COOROY, like many regional towns, has experienced considerable change over the past decade. The way in which Cooroy residents have met this challenge with energy and creativity without losing its distinctive qualities has attracted a great deal of interest. Suzanne Kyte, a Griffith University PhD candidate, is extremely interested in finding out how local residents and Council have dealt with change. In particular, she wants to learn more about the Lower Mill site and how the community’s history, heritage, skills, values and hopes for the future have been part of the redevelopment.

Mainly music MAINLY Music is an opportunity for adults and children to build memories and spend time together, sharing special time with each other. • For young children and their caregivers to enjoy music, rhyme, rhythm, creative dance and more. • Preschool children developing skills – coordination, fine motor skills, gross motor movements, social interaction, appreciation of music and musical styles, language development. • Providing children with a structured environment and then a time of free play. • An opportunity for parents to network with other parents of preschool children. And for families to find a sense of ‘old fashioned community’. Anglican Church Hall cnr Tewantin Road & Miva Street, Cooroy; Wednesday mornings, 9.30am to 10.30 am (except school holidays); $5.00 per family includes Morning Tea. Suzanne’s research has grown out of her work as cultural planner, especially projects involving both communities, local government, and planners, architects, and landscape architects. In her experience it is a huge challenge to bring community and professional built environment expertise together but it is often the things valued by residents that define local identity, community values and a sense of place. She believes that understanding and respecting these elements better is fundamental to dealing with change while continuing to meet the needs of local people. Change is always going to be inevitable

Train your brain YOUR brain is no different than rest of the muscles in your body - you either use it or you lose it. Inspired by evidence of how using brain training programs can assist us to stay alert, and slow down the so-called inevitable decline of our brain functions as we progress in years, the Pomona & District Community House has recently acquired an extraordinary brain training program from Posit Science called BrainHQ. BrainHQ has 25+ effective brain training exercises that are explicitly designed to improve brain health and speed up the brain, so you can think faster and more efficiently in every situation. BrainHQ’s exercises work out your attention, memory, brain speed, people skills, navigation, and intelligence. There are hundreds of levels of exercises. Available at the Pomona Community House, Memorial Avenue Pomona. Full tutorial will be given for newcomers. We will work out a time that works for you. news Begin a new chapter – join a book club! YOU only have to look at the success of shows such as the ABC’s The Book Club to see Australians’ growing interest in book clubs, says Noosa Library Service Collections and Services Coordinator Tracey King. “Noosa Library Service recognises book clubs’ social value and role in supporting reading, and we currently have more than 40 active book clubs,” she says. “Members have more than 236 book club sets available for use and the library also helps connect people with book clubs in their area. This is how the first men’s book club was created recently,” Ms King says. Noosa Library Service hosts special book club events for members and anyone interested in joining. The Book Club Winter Soiree is the next planned event, to be held at Noosaville Library in June with guest speaker Sarah Armstrong, author of “His Other House”. “Along with the chance of new friendships, Book Clubs provide an opportunity for conversation, and even controversial debate at times. The more controversial the book, the more stimulating the conversation seems to be,” Ms King says. “Recently Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced his New Year’s resolution to read a book every two weeks, and not surprisingly the world followed his lead, with Amazon selling out of Zuckerberg’s first choice within 24 hours.” The Book Club Winter Soiree will be held on Thursday 4 June from 6.30pm. Entry is $8 to be paid at the door. Book a place by phoning 5329 6555 or online at www.libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au. “The Soiree will also feature stories from other book clubs, and the all-important chance to share ideas for new titles. Join the world of book clubs and share the love,” Ms King says. ORCHIDS make terrific landscaping plants and there are many varieties that can be cultivated successfully in the gardens on the Sunshine Coast. I live in the beautiful Mary Valley and we are colder than the coastal strip and I still grow many orchids successfully in the garden. Most of the orchids I grow are epiphytic (grow on trees) and when established flower regularly. I find the easiest are Australian natives, Soft cane Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, Oncidums and certain varieties of Vandas. To learn more about these Orchids the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society holds their meetings at Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each month starting at 1pm. Everyone is welcome and bring any troublesome plants with them as we have a plant clinic each meeting. The club also conducts a Mother’s Day Show in Cooroy to showcase the many varieties of orchids from around the world and Australia. There will be a riot of colour and the perfume will astound. The show is open Friday 8th and Saturday 9th May. There will be lots and lots of orchid plants for sale and don’t be afraid to ask advice. There is a $2 entry fee. END OF SEASON SALE ON NOW! 44 Elm St, Cooroy - 5442 6333 www.cooroyoutdoorpower.com.au

The Cooroy Hotel stood on the cnr of Diamond and Elm Sts It was built in 1908 for Christian Walter, of Yandina, on land now occupied by the Cooroy Motel. In 1910, it was moved to the corner of Diamond and Elm Streets and extended making a large single storey structure. About this time, the licence was transferred from Emily Godwin to her son Arthur. Dugald Clugson owned the hotel when it was destroyed by fire in 1920 and replaced by an imposing 2 storeyed building. The hotel operated until the 1960s. It was dismantled in 1967 and the materials reused to build two houses in Pearl Street. This Shopping Centre formerly known as Railway Square was built in 1985. Diamond Street The next building was Crokham’s Dental Surgery until purchased by Malcolm Outridge in 1930. (He later moved to Maple Street.) It was occupied by the army during WW2 and then became a boarding house. When Ian Macdonald, veterinary surgeon, came to Cooroy, the building became his family residence with the surgery in the neighbouring building built by Jack Daly as a tailor’s shop on the site of the Coronation Hall. The building now houses a Real Estate office. Ian Macdonald moved a house from across the street as a residence for an associate. The Coronation Hall, built in 1911, at the time of the Coronation of King George V, stood on this site alongside the Cooroy Hotel. It was built for Arthur Godwin, licensee of the hotel and was used for various social and community events including church services and Lodge meetings. It was the theatre for ‘Brittain’s Popular Pictures’ when silent movies became available. It had once contained a clothing store, and an undertaker had operated from the premises. In 1936, it was dismantled and the material used to construct a home in Elm Street. RACQ Garage – In 1911, this was Phil Elder’s blacksmith shop; and then AC Crees’. It later became Kays’ Garage. Galvanized Iron building on the corner of Diamond Street and Tewantin Road. Built circa 1910, it was used as a paint shop for the sulkies made by blacksmith and wheelwright Phil Elder. It later housed Bretherton’s Tinsmith and Plumbing business (1928 – 1929). Claude Owen then operated the plumbing business for many years. It has been extended over time. The older houses on southern side of Diamond Street – were built in the 1920s. No. 14. Diamond Street was the residence of Peter Hood in the 1920s/1930s. P. H. Hood’s small Pharmacy building was situated in the front right hand corner of the yard The Vet Surgery - Replaced an old building, originally Paul & Campbell’s drapery shop. The latter was used for a time as the office of

the Department of Stock until a new building was erected in Myall Street. (Now used as the Police Station Office.) The shop had also been occupied by the Endeavour Foundation and was finally used as a produce storeroom by Frank Sauer and Sons. Belvedere Newsagency 4 Diamond Street - The shop on this site was once ‘Jarman Bros. Hairdressers, Tobacconists, Stationers and Newsagents’. Roy and Harold Jarman, returned from service in WWI, purchased Shelwell’s business in 1919. They also sold cameras, wireless sets, motor fuels and oils, and were agents for cars, trucks and motorcycles. Billiards and snooker were played in a parlour at the rear of the shop. The newsagency was rebuilt after the original was destroyed by fire in 1926. Service Station- Cnr of Diamond Street & Elm Street. A shop was built on this corner in 1912 by Mr Hauville in which a Mr Vincent established a business as Fruiterer and Butcher. Over the years, with its proximity to the Railway Station, it has chiefly supplied refreshments. It was rebuilt after the disastrous fire of 1926. In the 1930s, as Major’s café, many wedding receptions were held there. Bill and Ethel Parry bought the café in 1959. They had the building moved back from the street frontage and renovated. Further alterations have made the former café practically unrecognizable. There was even a sawmill on the eastern side of Cooroy run by the Irelands, it also was destroyed by fire. The vacant lot that was between the newsagency and the drapery after the fire was used by travelling circuses. Part of that land is now the Cooroy Sports Hub formally the Cooroy Bowls Club, established in 1948 and the other part was the SEQ then Energex depot.

WITH a new president, revitalised committee and a long term commitment from the owners of The Cooroy Sports Hub, the Cooroy Community Bowls Club is looking forward to a new era in bowls in Cooroy. The committee and owners of “The Hub” are working together to provide an expanded social and community programme that will incorporate barefoot bowls, a sports club challenge, junior and ladies social events together with traditional club and pennant competitions. The aim of the new programme is to introduce newcomers to the game of bowls and provide an avenue for the serious bowlers to participate in an expanded club and intra club competition. The club is fully affiliated with Bowls Queensland and welcomes bowlers of all skill levels to join as members or visitors. Plans are in place to promote bowls to schools and other sporting and community organisations in a friendly, social environment. The sportsmans’ challenge is designed as a social event whereby teams from local sports and community clubs can participate in the game and hone their skills whilst meeting and socialising in a family friendly environment. Barefoot bowls is to allow newcomers to try out the game and enjoy an afternoon of social interaction in great surroundings. Contact the club or “The Hub” to register your interest. All equipment is available to allow all comers to try their hand. Other non bowling activities such as golf putting on an “18 hole course’ are also in the pipeline. After a period of uncertainty it is full steam ahead with all stakeholders fully committed to the new expanded programme.

EAST SIDE TRADERS . . . Come on over The Christensens - an integral part of our community

GARY and Carol Christensen, as most of us would know, are the owners of Belvedere’s newsagency. But they are much more than business owners. Over the years the couple has done much to enhance and support our community. Gary’s family has been in Cooroy for three generations. His father grew beans and bananas at West Cooroy. The Christensens, with the help of other Cooroy league families, started the Noosa Junior Rugby League where Gary was treasurer for over 20 years. He also played, coached and was an executive member of the Noosa Senior League. He holds a life membership for both clubs. For 20 years Gary sold Goose Club tickets at Cooroy hotel on a Friday night to raise money to send many of our young sportsmen and women to represent our region, state or country in varied sports. Gary was also a member of the Kabara Hostel Board before they joined with Carramar. He is a member and past executive of the Cooroy Golf Club and on the committee of the present Bowls Club. Carol’s been no slouch either when it comes to community participation. Her maternal grandfather came to Cooroy from Tasmania so her roots go back a couple of generations as well. She has been on the executive of the Cooroy State School and Noosa High School and treasurer on the Noosa High School Board where she continued with the role for five years after her children finished school.

She’s served on the committee for the Cooroy Dolphin Swim Club, has been a member of the Cooroy Tennis club for around 40 years also serving there on the executive committee. She was a member of the Cooroy Streetscape Working Group that worked with Noosa Council to create our unique streetscape. She is a member of the Cooroy Chamber of commerce and for 10 years served on the Cooroy Lower Mill Board, three of those years as chairperson one as secretary. Carol has also been on the Cooroy Fusion Committee since its beginning. “The thing we like best about Cooroy is its people,” say the Christensens. “The Cooroy community is always so supportive of events and fundraisers. We love the community spirit, and are especially appreciative of the many volunteers who run our sporting clubs. These sporting clubs are important for our young people. “The thing we could change would be the pedestrian walk bridge as we see so many of our mature community members struggle to walk over it. This needs to be fixed.”

EAST SIDE TRADERS . . . Come on over The Local Economic Plan – What does this mean for the Eastside?

THE development of a Local Economic Plan incorporating Rural Futures is an ideal opportunity for “Country Noosa” to look to its future. Current and future challenges, available resources, identifying new opportunities in existing and emerging sectors, and the role that Council has in this, will all be considered with the aim to build a stronger local economy. Cr Sandy Bolton urges all residents to take part in this process, as it is vital to capture the diversity of community thought. “Regardless of demographic, whether you are an employee, business owner, retired or unemployed, parent or grandparent, get involved. A strong and diverse local economy can assist the social and environmental components of our shire through multiplier benefits. When residents and business are struggling, they have a decreased capacity to volunteer, sponsor events, support environmental initiatives and tackle social issues. The individual ‘health’ of the 3 components of environment/community/economy is reliant on each other, with an interdependence that is both simple and complex.“ Community consultation has now extended to include not only submissions and forums/workshops, but the online Yoursay portal for residents to put forward their thoughts on their vision and aspirations moving forward. “Don’t be afraid to step outside

the box with your ideas. There are many concepts that may not have even been thought of, and with Noosa’s international brand, Biosphere status and both obvious and hidden ‘jewels’ there is much more to consider than what may be visible or apparent” There is a number of aspects for residents to consider when putting ‘pen to paper’ which include the expected role of council, funding considerations and if infrastructure is involved, “whole of life costs” including maintenance and depreciation. Collaborative opportunities, current and future planning schemes and identification of current resources or initiatives are areas that could be “tweaked” to deliver specific outcomes for often minimal outlay. There have been many questions asked by residents regarding the local economy and jobs shortage. This has included as to whether areas in Country Noosa, for example the Eastern side of Cooroy, will be further developed. “Multiple factors have to be considered for each precinct, including the current zoning of that land, impacts and road carrying capacities, traffic and road safety issues, need, and the vision of the community. The map (pictured) is an example of applicable zones in the eastern side of Cooroy. This is a good starting point for residents in developing a better understanding of what zonings are and do” CARA recently held a breakfast meeting to discuss a number of issues for Cooroy and surrounding areas, and to obtain information in order to start thinking about a new Noosa Plan which is scheduled to commence drafting in 2016. Cr Sandy feels it is vital for more of these types of discussion to be held. “I urge residents to come along to the Council Roadshows in May and June where information will be available to assist residents in making better decisions regarding this plan, as well as the Social and Local Economic Plans. These Roadshows will be informal, with plenty of ‘open’ time for questions and discussions, and opportunities for you to relay how Councillors and Council can serve you better. Please come along and join in … and afterwards for those that do not need to hurry home I am sure there will be a coffee somewhere for further catching up!” To keep informed about upcoming community consultations and submission opening dates, keep an eye on your local media, “like” Council’s Facebook page or subscribe to Yoursay Noosa through http://yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au/your-say-noosa. Otherwise, a phone call to Council will provide any information that your need.

health Take care of Mum’s physical health this Mother’s Day

Homoeopathy

COOROY RAG

OFTEN at Mother’s Day we are stuck for ideas on what to get that extremely important person in our lives. Giving your mum the gift of physical health is something that she will benefit from long after the day. Women who have had a baby, had gynaecological surgery or gone though menopause are at a higher risk of developing pelvic floor and core muscle weaknesses. This can lead to larger problems like incontinence, prolapse, bladder urgency or pain. You may have already heard your mum discussing her weak bladder or complaining about the “mummy tummy” she has had since giving birth to her precious children. Many people do not realise the interaction that happens between the pelvic floor and core muscles. The pelvic floor muscles actually form the base of the group of muscles collectively

known as “the core”. They consist of the diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, deep abdominal muscle and deep spinal muscles. Together they support the spine and control the pressure within the abdomen. Many women have extremely weak pelvic floor and core muscles. It is important to ensure that these muscles are working correctly and that the pelvic floor muscles are appropriately exercised to prevent issues with incontinence or prolapse. A specialised physiotherapist can assess the pelvic floor muscles and prescribe an appropriate exercise program. Many women are undertaking physical exercise classes that are actually putting their pelvic floor muscles at risk! Exercises need to be modified and undertaken with care and guidance for women who are at risk of developing pelvic floor issues or who

already have issues. Rebecca Steele from Hinteractive Physio has undertaken special training in the assessment and management of pelvic floor conditions. She is able to assess the function of the pelvic floor and core muscles and provide an individualised, progressive retraining program. Rebecca also takes Ladies Safe strength classes which allow women to exercise and strengthen effectively without putting unnecessary and potentially harmful strain on their pelvic floor. If you would like to treat your mum to the gift of good physical health, contact Hinteractive Physio on 5442 5556 to enquire about a gift certificate or exercise class pass for your mum. It may be just what she needs!

health Preparing for the flu season naturally

COOROY RAG

EVERY winter the influenza virus plays havoc with our ability to work and play. Symptoms of the flu include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, runny nose, cough and stomach symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Sometimes a flu virus can come on slowly or it can hit suddenly without much notice. Each year this leads people to wonder how they can prevent themselves and their family from getting the flu. Naturopathic prevention and treatment of the flu virus includes vitamins and minerals, botanical medicine and lifestyle recommendations. Vitamins and Minerals: • Vitamin C- Vitamin C can greatly enhance the immune system’s ability to fight infections of many kinds. In controlled trials Vitamin C has been shown to aid in the prevention of influenza, as well as shortening the duration and reducing the severity of infections already contracted. • Zinc- Zinc plays an important role in maintaining healthy immune function. Low levels of zinc are associated with a decrease in T cell function, a vital white blood cell that helps fight infections. • Vitamin A- Vitamin A is also associated with T cell function, making it a vital component of a healthy immune system. Vitamin A maintains the integrity of mucus membranes, which are at the front line of our defences against viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections. Botanical Medicine: • Elderberry- Research demonstrates that elderberry extract has particular immune-modulating and antioxidant properties that neutralize the activity of viruses so they can no longer enter the cell and replicate. The berries also contain vitamins A and C, and the flavonoids quercetin, anthocyanin and rutin, all of which boost immune function. • Larch arbinogalactans- Larch

arabinogalactans are polysaccharides derived from the wood of the Western larch tree. These polysaccharides stimulate the immune system to fend off infections. Larch arabinogalactans have been studied and shown effective in adults, as well as children, which makes it a great choice for keeping the whole family healthy through the flu season. • Echinacea- Echinacea also has the immune stimulating polysaccharides that give it an important role in naturopathic antiviral treatments. These polysaccharides naturally enhance the body’s resistance to infection. Lifestyle tips for the prevention and treatment of the flu: • Sleep- Maintaining a balanced sleep routine is one way to keep our immune system healthy. Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to rejuvenate for the next day. Consistent inadequate sleep lowers the body’s defences needed for fighting viral infections. • Stress- While stress is a part of everyday life; excessive stress can decrease immune function and make it easier to come down with the flu. Establishing stress management techniques like deep breathing, exercise, yoga or meditation can help ensure that every day stress won’t leave you vulnerable to the flu. • Diet- A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and quality proteins is a foundation for a healthy immune system. Studies have shown that eating a sugary snack or meal can depress the immune system for several hours, creating a window of time during which it is easier to get the flu. Avoiding excessive sugar can keep the immune system working at the level needed to fend off viral infections, like the flu. Most over-the-counter medications only treat the symptoms of the cold or flu virus. Naturopathic & Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments include nutritional supplementation, lifestyle recommendations and immune-stimulating and antiviral botanicals that can support the body’s natural defences. Call Maple Street Acupuncture and Natural Medicine Clinic to make an appointment with one of our Naturopathic or Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors to discover what your options are ... naturally. health Is the gut the key to improving memory and easy weight loss

Pamper

COOROY RAG

WE all know about the signs of ageing, memory loss with a fear of it becoming Alzheimers, buying magnifying glasses for our failing eyesight because we try to kid ourselves that buying these from a cheapy shop doesn’t mean we need glasses and gradual weight gain that we just can’t shift. How many different diets or crazy fads have so many people tried in desperation to lose weight? Not only is this so often soul destroying but it is also physically damaging to the body. We only have to look around us to see people of “our age” looking a similar shape so we give up trying and resign ourselves to the fact that this must be normal, well, it doesn’t have to be! The media may now be telling us that middle age isn’t until we’re 60, but after a health scare at just 48 and her subsequent research of Candida and a nutritional plan resulting in a massive improvement of brain function, eyesight and easy weight loss, award winning natural health and wellbeing practitioner Tina Kirkham Smith of Akiki Wellbeing’s studies have brought her to understand that even natural supplements can simply be a band aid if the core issue of good gut health isn’t properly addressed. She also believes that people diagnosed with issues such as Lactose Intolerance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue and even Lupus to name just a few have the ability to reduce or possibly even eradicate symptoms and create better health if they commit to seriously working at the importance of improving their digestive system. “I always thought I ate healthily so for many

years I was in denial about my absolute sugar addiction, thinking that eating organic veggies, chia seeds, nuts, sprouted foods, Kefir and other superfoods was enough to keep me healthy and that my asthma on exertion, bad circulation and thunder thighs were just how I was made. I was also in denial about how my eyesight was deteriorating and how increasingly bad my memory was becoming and I wasn’t feeling good about the middle age spread thing happening. Everything came to a very scary head in May last year when I had absolutely no recollection of a conversation with my children and I was in tears at work (ironically I work in a health store) because I regularly couldn’t remember whether I’d been told by customers just a second earlier their payment was to be cheque, savings or credit! At this point I knew I had to do something and do it hard and fast.” Tina Kirkham Smith is passionate about sharing the information she has learned from her recent life-changing experience and newfound health to give others the opportunity to transform their lives and feel better than they have ever felt before. If you’re serious about taking on the responsibility of changing your life Akiki Wellbeing is now supporting the health and wellbeing of the Cooroy community at Lakeridge Health and Beauty, 3 Ruby Street, Cooroy with 45 minute Weight Loss/AntiCandida support consultations available for $50. Raising awareness for Lyme Disease THE Lyme Disease Association of Australia (LDAA) are holding the annual ‘May Lyme Project’ for the month of May which is a national campaign to raise public awareness of the risk of infection from tick bites. The health risks associated with tick bite are much greater than most people realise and the Sunshine Coast is a known hot spot for Lyme Disease. It is vital that our public health care move into the 21st Century and recognise Lyme disease in Australia as well as provide appropriate care to patients. Sunshine coast resident, and the LDAA’s President, Sharon Whiteman, says “awareness-raising is important because many people don’t realise that Lyme disease can be contracted through a tick bite. People are becoming seriously ill after a tick bite, while being denied proper medical treatment. If treated early the chances of full recovery are good, but left untreated Lyme disease can totally destroy lives. The tragedy of our situation is that Lyme disease is both preventable and treatable,” In 2014, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer,

Professor Chris Baggoley, recommended awareness raising and a number of research priorities, but has not been supported with the funding to implement the research. While progress has been made, it’s far short of what’s urgently needed to save the lives of Australian Lyme patients. There are no official statistics about the number of Lyme disease cases in Australia. However the LDAA’s survey data indicates there are more than 1200 patients reporting a diagnostically confirmed case of Lyme disease in 2014 and the numbers continue to grow. The LDAA anticipate patients to be in hundreds of thousands once Lyme disease testing is diagnostically reliable and the disease is properly recognised. We would appreciate any media support you can provide to this campaign and our local public events during May 2015 - see attached. Sunshine Coast Event: Yandina Markets, Saturday May 9th, 6am – 2pm. People interested in learning more about Lyme disease are invited to come along to the awareness event, where Lyme patients will be on hand to offer information and support.

Noosa Country Drive

Riley toots our horn in China NOOSA District State High School Year 11 student Riley Phillips had an extraordinary Easter holiday showcasing his skills on the trombone, whilst taking in the culture and sights of Xiamen, China. Riley was asked by the Sister Cities Association John James to represent the Sunshine Coast as part of a musical tour of China from April 11 to April 21. Playing trombone at the Children’s Palace and visiting cultural areas were highlights for Riley, who has been perfecting the art of the trombone for the past 7 years. “I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about the culture,” Riley said. Riley also picked up a little bit of the language during his 11 day visit.

TOURISM Noosa is currently working on a new project called “Noosa Country Drive”. The Noosa region is known for its prestine beaches, yet it has more to offer and hte objective of the project is to disperse visitors throughout the Noosa Hinterland into towns such as Pomona, Kin Kin, Cooroy, Eumundi, Cooran, Tinbeerwah and Boreen Point. A new Visitnoosa-website will be launched soon and will include a dedicated hinterland/country miscrosite with information about tours, activities, trails accommodaiton, restaurants, markets, events galleries, wellbeing and more in the Nooas Hinterland. A dedicated Noosa regional map will be part of this project also. Tourism Noosa is conducting a product audio audit of the entire Noosa hinterland/country region and whilst they have some great product already listed if you can provide any ideas that would be interesting to include please send your suggestions by 15 May to isa@tourismnoosa.com.au

The trombone was selected as Riley’s instrument of choice by his primary school, Nambour Christian College, and he has since developed a passion and real talent for trombone playing. Jazz is Riley’s favourite musical genre to play on the trombone, and he regularly plays at local music events including the Caloundra Music Festival, the Noosa Jazz Festival and the Dingo Jazz Creek Festival. “Last year, I played with James Morrison at Nambour Christian College, which was pretty amazing,” Riley said. Noosa District State High School is very proud of Riley’s musical accomplishments, and he will no doubt have an amazing future in music with such talent.

New image for Cooroy Butter Factory THE Cooroy Butter Factory is about to have an exciting new image. Noosa Regional Gallery Director, Nina Shadforth, has asked art enthusiast Tricia Bradford to organise a series of Pop Up galleries, rolling exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations to occupy the Cooroy art space until August when the future of the Butter

Factory may well be decided. The main galleries of the Butter Factory will be home to exhibits from 55 artists, craftspeople and arts collectives featuring a wide and diverse range of two and three dimensional art including paintings in all media, sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, jewellery, fabric and wearable art. The entire

display will be changed on a monthly basis. The highlights of the rolling exhibitions will be the monthly addition of two or three mini Pop Up studios or galleries featuring well known artists with new and different art forms. The art work will be unusual and attention seeking and well worth the visit. All the participating

artists will be happy to share their knowledge and talk to visitors. Many will give either workshops or demonstrations and many will work on site. There will also be the Butter Factory’s Public Programs such as Get Creative, free family oriented art activities developed in conjunction with current exhibited art and exhibition guided tours

and morning tea where the public can meet the exhibiting artists for informal floor talks, learn about the exhibitions and the motivation behind their practice. The Butter Factory Art Collective would like to welcome everyone and for further enquiries contact the Noosa Regional Gallery 5329 6145 or Tricia Bradford 0411 244 304

BY anyone’s estimate the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, at Mt Cooroora in Pomona, is a serious endurance event. If common sense didn’t already tell you that it might be hazardous for your health to run straight up a 438m mountain and then straight back down at top speed, the competitors’ nomination form makes it explicit that injury or death is a real possibility. But does this put off competitors? Only the faint-hearted. Okay, and maybe anyone sane. But there is a type of hard-core competitor who is attracted to the whole idea of pitting themselves against a tremendous challenge and emerging triumphant. Or at least unscathed. The Mountain Challenge is the premier event of the Wimmer’s King of the Mountain Festival, to be held on Sunday 26 July. Simply registering to compete is not enough – each competitor must detail their running experience and training regime before they will be considered for entry by the Race Steward. Beginners need not apply, but if you think you’ve got what it takes, nominations for this year’s race open on 14 May and close on July 16 (register at www.kingof themountain.com.au). Those who don’t hanker after such a diehard existence can still watch the action up close but without having to worry about meeting an SES mountain rescue crew. Super large screens will be set up in Stan Topper Park in the centre of town, showing the action as it happens live at strategic spots on the mountain. Spectators who are thinking of competing themselves one day, or perhaps just thinking about their next latte, will be able

to watch the sweat and the struggle, the mishaps and the elation from the comfort of their picnic blankets or deck chairs. But before settling in to watch the big event, there will be plenty to keep visitors interested. The heritage market will offer a range of hand-made arts and crafts, and this year there will also be a good selection of antiques and vintage wares. Simultaneously, a large antiques fair will be held in the School of Arts building, not to mention every antiques shop in Pomona being open for business. The Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival is a project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club. Only 100 competitors are permitted to undertake the premier event, the Mountain Challenge. Over the coming weeks we’ll feature a few of them, highlighting just what it takes to tackle the mountain. Competitor Profile: Kim Beckinsale There is no doubt Kim Beckinsale is an actionwoman. She’s a PE teacher at Sunshine Beach State High School, and a qualified coach. She competes in adventure racing and multisport events that include mountain bike orienteering, trail running, cross triathlon, and long distance crosscountry navigation in teams (called rogaining). Among all this hard physical activity, Kim has found the time to compete in the Mountain Challenge on ten occasions and has won the Women’s Division four times. Kim wanted to take part in the Mountain Challenge from the moment she learned about it, but her job took her out west, too far to travel back to Pomona for the race. But she knew she would return to the Sunshine Coast, so she started riding a bike to build up her leg muscles to

Kim Beckinsale -Yep, I made it down in one piece - photo by Raoul Slater ensure she would be competitive when she returned. After Kim returned to the Sunshine Coast she ran the Mountain Challenge four years straight, winning the Women’s Division in 1993. Triathlons then kept her busy for a few years. But the mountain kept drawing her back, so she ran the Mountain Challenge again for a number of years, winning the Women’s Division in

2003, 2004 and finally in 2014 at the age of 46. Being a four time winner, Kim is proof positive that training for the Mountain Challenge does not have to include repeatedly running up and down Mt Cooroora. She considers the mountain to be a special place, and uses it sparingly in her training – maybe five times a year. The rest of the time she finds cross triathlon, mountain biking, paddling, trail running, rogaining and mountain

bike orienteering is enough to keep her fit. Kim’s father is part of the commentary team for the Mountain Challenge, and she says it’s been a thrill to have him declare her the winner in the Women’s Division four times. Whether he’ll get to do so again in 2015 is open to speculation because Kim has not yet decided if she will compete. And yes, that sound you’re hearing is all of Kim’s rivals breathing a sigh of relief at this news.

Pomona celebrates agency Opening POMONA was in full swing on 14 April as the town officially opened its very own Bendigo Bank Agency. Guests including Mayor Noel Playford and Bendigo Bank state manager, Noel Jessup and the board of Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) were on hand to celebrate with more than 100 locals and community group representatives. Filling a great local need, the agency is the town’s only banking service, following the closure of the ANZ Bank late last year. Located at 3 Station Street, the agency now services Pomona and the Noosa hinterland three days a week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.00am 3.00pm. Chairman of SCCFSL, Rick

Cooper said the agency is already enjoying a lot of enquiry as they provide residents, traders and community groups with an alternative, locallyowned banking option. “The agency offers transaction and lending services, and can process home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. There’s also opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments. We’re also excited about the arrival of an ATM as an added convenience to locals,” Mr. Cooper said. “Local word of mouth has meant we’ve had lots of interest either side of Easter, but it was great to enjoy the opening with so many who have worked hard to make this happen. There’s also great excitement about Pomona having a real say in

Stephen Hildtich, Perene Barker and Jim Austin

its own future, and Pam Hoens and the team are excited and ready to assist with locals with their banking needs. “We’re delighted to be able to deliver what the Pomona community asked for last year, and indications are this agency will grow from strength to strength. I think it’s going to be a great addition to Pomona’s business community and have significant positive long term impact on the town,” Mr. Cooper added. He added the message is simple - the more support the Pomona agency receives, the more support can be given to the community. “Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, means money can go back into the community. As one of the new agency’s customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Mr. Cooper concluded. The Pomona agency is fully supported by the Cooroy Community Bank branch staff. Manager Geoff Edwards continues to be based in Cooroy and Customer Relationship Officer, Pam Hoens now occupies her office in the Pomona Agency during

THE stars are aligning for the Cooroy residential and Hinterland prestige property market with a solid 2014 performance and key market drivers at levels not seen in over a decade. Hinternoosa has written over 30 contract’s in March April activity is concentrated Cooroy township and within a 5 km radius Lake Macdonald, Tinbeerwah and Cooroy Mountain the average sale price is improving. Time on market for homes in Cooroy can now often be less than 4 weeks, the price of Cooroy residential land is increasing as supply tightens and small acreage (5ac to 20ac) close to town is selling well. The “Golden Triangle” hinterland dress circle centres around Mount Cooroy, being positioned equidistant from Noosa, Eumundi and Cooroy. The locality has over the years attracted wellheeled “green changers” with its lush sub-tropical landscape, panoramic views to the Pacific Ocean and across the hinterland ranges and a relaxed and private “country meets the coast”

lifestyle. Buyers are responding to an abundant supply of gracious homes, nestled on private, lush acreages, all within 10 – 15 minutes of Sunshine Coast beaches, vibrant restaurant strips and attractions. The fact that we now have numerous first-rate private schools located within close proximity also suits our buyer group. Sunshine Coast regional airport and Brisbane International Airport being within 20 & 90 minutes respectively makes it easy for buyers who’s work commitments take them away from our region to live here. The property market experienced its last peak pre-GFC in 2007/2008. Since then, values have plateaued and there have been some sales at depressed levels where financial pressures have seen properties come to the market. But the planets are aligning and the early signs are promising for a strong recovery. 2014 saw 21 properties over $1.0 million transacted with sales as high as $2,875,000 and

$3,100,000 recorded. There were sales to international and interstate buyers who saw the value and took advantage of the opportunity. Some of the smart buys were picked up by Noosa locals, recognizing the once in a cycle opportunity to upsize and upgrade or transition from the busier coastal strip to the charm and tranquillity of the hinterland. Murray Brown is principal of specialist agency Hinternoosa and has 28 years’ experience in the Cooroy market place. The market emerged from its sleepy country origins in the 90’s to the heady days of the mid 2000’s when international identities and cashed up expatriate executives snapped up acreage properties, many with spectacular views, to create stunning resort style estates. The key drivers of this market is the strong growth in the Sydney and Melbourne feeder markets, strong stock market performance, low interest rates and an Australian Dollar at levels that are attractive to the international or returning expat buyers. The final piece in the puzzle is a ready supply of homes being available and that too is falling in to place. Many of our past clients have been in the area for a long time and due to changes in family circumstances or for other personal reasons, some are now seeking to sell their lifestyle estates. We expect to see some wonderful buying opportunities during 2015, with buyers being able to secure stunning homes. Some will even be priced at levels seen a decade ago, before the last boom. With the Sunshine Coast market having just been identified as the fastest growing market in the state with 6.7% growth for 2014 (according to RPData), it appears that the stars are aligning for this most desirable real estate haven.

sport Athlete wins gold medal on debut

COOROY RAG

Sebastien was one of 41 athletes from Little Athletics Noosa who qualified to compete at the state championships. Noosa had the fourth largest team of athletes qualify to attend the championships and ended up claiming a total of 26 medals including 11 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze. Along with the Little Athletics Noosa’s medal haul several personal best times were also achieved, including three Queensland Best Performances—Rianna Dorey, 17, won gold in the Girls Under 17 200m (25.50 seconds); Nicholas Hooper, 15, won gold in the Under 16 Boys High Jump (1.80 metres); and Luke Giacca, 16, won gold in the Under 17 Boys Javelin (63.19 metres). Sebastien attends Eumundi State School.

COMPETING at the Little Athletics Queensland state championships for the first time, Noosa athlete Sebastien Hayes, 8, has won a gold medal in the Under 9 Boys 60m hurdles in a time of 10.40 seconds. Competing at the championships has been a great introduction to little athletics for Sebastien, since joining Little Athletics Noosa in September last year. He won a bronze medal in the Under 9 Shot Put and a silver medal in the Under 9 Discus with fellow Noosa team mate Christian Caldwell, at the Queensland State Relay championships in December last year. And in March this year he qualified to compete in five events at the Little Athletics Queensland state championships, finishing strongly in the 70m, 100m, high jump and discus, as well as the 60m hurdles in which he won gold.
